I was running a famous line in the movie Forrest Gump mad by Tom Hanks, this is the mindset that
the player on your team has to have to accomplish one of the major aspects of muscular fitness
which is muscular endurance. In the game of basketball, there are four quarters, many time during
the fourth, the importance of endurance training comes to light. A player that is in peak physical
condition often run at the same speed and have the same munverableity that they had in the first

Intensity which both need in the sport of basketball. High Intensity endurance much greater in the
game of basketball due to the fact that it uses high power movement repetitively when playing the
game. While low endurance cardio is often overlooked when the final seconds of the game is on the
line, this attribute is often highlighted. An area such as the anaerobic threshold and lactate
threshold have to both be increased while training in order to promote maximum performance.

Essay on Metropis by Fritz Lang and Modern Times by...
Discuss Fritz Lang s Metropolis and Charlie Chaplin s Modern Times
Very few movies portray the relationship between the government and civilian masses during
trying moments such as Fritz Lang s Metropolis , and Charlie Chaplin s Modern Times . These
are two critically acclaimed films made in the late 1920 s and mid 1930 s. The time period captured
is the great depression, and examine the role of the governing authorities in relation to those
governed.
Metropolis simply passes as one of the original science fiction movies in the world, and it has
vivid imagery in it. Its main themes revolve around cultural exploitation and political issues facing
the citizenry. It is set in Germany and tells the story of a metropolis where there are ... Show more

It concentrates on the effects of know how on the society and how human beings are living side by
side with them. They effects of mechanization are evident from the opening scene of this film
where workers are being monitored by machines in a factory lending credence to his view of human
enslavement by technology. At the time of making the film, America was going through high
unemployment rates, and corporate downfall as a result of the great depression. Hence, the idea of
saving money and time so as to amass huge profits came up hence the introduction of machines to
work on behalf of humans.
Many film critics have argued that these two films resemble each other even though they were
produced almost a decade apart. Both are about the suffering of the ordinary person in the hands of
a ruthless upper class. The ordinary man is seeking to live in a normal environment where there are
no controls, and work is not mechanized. They all talk about a future where machines take over
from human beings and do all the work. The machines even subdue the humans. In both films
machines are at the centre of businesses as they make work easier, and increase profits for the elite.
Governments in a capitalistic society do not control businesses. Furthermore, in both films the
government is unable to take care of the masses as the elitist control all the resources available.
In Metropolis , it represents a capitalistic society where only those with the means

Sexual Exploitation Of Sex Advertising
Sexual exploitation is becoming more and more mainstream in advertisements. Everyone knows
that sex sells. Especially Carl s Jr. They have developed a reputation with their salacious ad
campaigns, often depicting women in very revealing attires. In their recent advertisement for the
2015 Super Bowl, it features model Charlotte Mckinney where she is baring almost everything.
There is more to the commercial than just boobs and burgers. The use of Mckinney s body as a
sexual object is discriminating to all women and raises sexism. The stereotypical ad brings
imparities between genders and promotes genderpolicing. The attention grabbing, super sexy Au
Naturel ad first starts off with the model Mckinney, walking through a farmer s market
practically naked while strategically placed items are covering her private areas. She clearly has
all the attention of the men at the market. She walks by this one man with a spray hose and he
completely turns around to catch a look of Mckinney, who appears fully naked, being covered
this time by the spraying water from the hose. She catches another man s attention and is a shot
of her bare back with a tomato shaped exactly like her behind, perfectly covering just that. The
man then pinches and grabs the side of the tomato. The shot after shows her walking towards a
scale where again, a man is perfectly barely covering her up by putting two big melons on a scale to
replace her breasts. The last and final shot is when she is walking towards

Two Point Of Distinction Between Fraud And Misrepresentation
3. The aggrieved party can also sue for damages, if any. However, if the aggrieved party wants to
claim damages, he has to first rescind the contract and then only he can claim damages.
ILLUSTRATION
A man was fraudulently induced to buy a house. After rescission of the contract, he was allowed to
recover the expense involved in moving into the house as damages [Doyle vs Olby (Ironmongers)

Mistake of Fact Mistake of fact can be further divided as bilateral and unilateral mistake.
a)Bilateral Mistake: According to Section 20 where both the parties to an agreement are under a

declaring an agreement to be void ab initio under this Section, the following three conditions must

Both the parties must be under a mistake
Mistake must relate to some fact and not to judgement or opinion etc.
The fact must be essential to the agreement

The Importance Of Dementia
Dementia is an umbrella term used to explain a progressive disorder that affects how the brain
works and the ability to remember, think and reason. It is not a disease in itself but a group of
symptoms that may accompany a number of diseases that affect the brain. In 2012, the
Alzheimer s Society estimated that there were about 800,000 people with dementia in the UK. It
is forecast that this number will continue to increase to over two million by 2051. (Alzheimer s
society 2014) The ambulance service receives approximately one third of their emergency call
outs from people 75 and over, a significant proportion of whom may have dementia. This essay
aims to give the ambulance service a better understanding of what it is like to have dementia and

understanding. It also looks at how treating someone with dementia can... Show more content on

often necessary to approach the situation in such a way to reduce the impact of these practical
difficulties which will help the patient maintain a sense of normality. This will also help the patient
feel independent and maintain their self esteem. An example of this would be: contacting the
patients doctor and organising a home visit from the patient. It could also be helpful to document
when the doctor is attending so the patient will be reminded in case they forget the

Cultural Differences Argument Analysis
Cultural Ethical Relativism is a theory that is used to explain differences among cultures, and thus
their moral codes. According to cultural relativists, different cultures have different moral codes,
and there is no objective truth in ethics. They believe there is no independent standard that can be
used to judge one s custom as better than another s. In his article entitled The Challenge of Cultural
Relativism, James Rachels offers his argument against the theory of Cultural Relativism by proving
the Cultural Differences Argument is unsound and invalid. Further in his article, Rachels reasons
against the claims made by cultural relativists, and he argues there are common values shared by all
cultures and there exists an independent standard... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If the Cultural Relativism is correct, then each culture will have total freedom in which its people
can do whatever they want within their society because what is right is determined by the moral
code of that society, and we cannot judge them since there is no independent standard that can be
used to judge one s custom. For example, in the late 19th century in the Southern United States,
despite the passages of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendment had abolished slavery and made
African Americans citizens, the majority of White Americans still perceived the Negroes as
inferior. Within the society in the South, the culture determined it was right that whites were
superior over blacks and American Whites could do whatever they pleased to the African
Americans. Consequently, the violent actions White Americans had committed against the
Negroes, such as murdering, lynching and preventing blacks to vote, were culturally acceptable in
the South. If the Cultural Ethical Relativism is right, then what these whites had done is justified as
correct and they did not commit any moral mistakes since their culture permitted such a

Australian Bungalow In The 1920 s
As Australian architects were often inspired by international designs many houses were decorative
thus there was the emergence of the Californian Bungalow within the 1920s. This housing structure
began during the early nineteen twenties which became a leading fashion (Boyd, 1962, p.70). Due
to the fact that Australian designs were not as independent as it is today the Californian Bungalow
was mainly influenced from the American Californian Bungalows. The bungalows in Australia was
an approved style for a suburban houseas a result of its simplistic buildingmethods such as staining
timbers, creating a pale plaster surface and applying decorative textures on plywood (Cuffley,
2007). Hence, the bungalows was a start of a new way of living for

The Natural Health Products Industry
The Natural Health Products Industry.
The natural health products industry is a massive part of the New Zealand economy, and brings a
lot of income to the country. With New Zealand natural health products continuing to gain
popularity overseas, particularly in Australia, North America and Asia as well as right here in our
own country, the industry is continuing to grow and grow (Natural Products New Zealand, 2016). In
this report I will cover a number of topics regarding the natural health products industry in New
Zealand including the sales history of the industry, the major competitors in the industry,
environmental influences, and then identify possible target markets for EnzyHealth, a hypothetical
company which operates in the natural health industry in New Zealand. There are many different
opinions on what exactly the Natural Health Products Industry actually includes. For the purpose
of this report I have taken the basis of the definition from the Natural Health and Supplementary
Products Bill which was developed in New Zealand in 2011 and has since been updated. Natural
health and supplementary product means any product that is [...] or appears to be, manufactured for
human use and for the primary purpose of bringing about a health benefit to the person who uses
the product. (Natural Health and Supplementary Products Bill 2011, No. 324 2)
There are many sectors, but one of the main ones of the NZ natural products health Industry is

Even through years of an economic recession which began in 2008, the company actually

the company was positioned to take advantage of conservative shoppers. In an interview with

Essay on Escalating Professional Athlete Salaries
Escalating Professional Athlete Salaries
Works Cited Not Included
In recent years, with the growing popularity of sports, athletes salaries have escalated like that of
a superb stock equity. Athletes are taking full advantage of their position, causing the average man
to wonder how high will they go. Some feel that athletes are greedy people who have lost care for
the true meaning of their salary, the love of the game.
Others feel that if a person is able to earn that kind of money, why shouldn t they? Increases in
athlete salaries will bring up the question on whether athletes are worth the money by researching
the NBA?s new collective bargaining agreement (before and after the approval), by observing the
current salaries of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The problem is they want to do that immediately. In a couple years, after Garnett develops into a
superstar, people will be saying ?Boy, I?m glad we signed him [Garnett].? Rosen thinks that it was
undoubtedly necessary to have rookie salary caps. If there weren?t those rookie caps, kids out of
college, even high school like KG [Kevin Garnett], would be signing these multi million dollar
contracts right after the draft. There is no doubt in my mind that that was a good thing to do.
He also feels that these high salaries are good because it shows that revenue is going up (Rosen).
Sports salaries have sky rocketed in the past ten to fifteen years. Professional athletes have moved
from six figure salaries to nine figure salaries in what seems like a snap of a finger. Michael Jordan,
for example, got paid about $35 million a year not counting endorsements. Let?s put that in
easier terms: $439,000 a game $12,500 a minute played, assuming he plays about 35 minutes per
game $209 a second played almost $40,000 a jumpshot, assuming he makes 11 jumpshots per
game That is a ton of money when one looks at it this way. If one includes the endorsements he
gets, which are from Nike, Gatorade, Hanes, Ballpark hot dogs, Jordan shoes and clothing,
Rayovac Batteries, and Michael Jordan cologne, he makes about one million dollars per game.
Now this is a little too much, even if it is, in fact, Michael Jordan, probably the best basketball

Compare And Contrast Odysseus And Harry Potter
Escaping from a man eating cyclops is no easy task, and neither is fighting the Dark Lord
himself. Odysseus is a very intelligent and motivated man who is the King of Ithaca. He fights in
the Trojan war but gets stuck sailing on the sea searching for his way home. Harry Potter is also a
very intelligent boy. At a very young age his parents were killed by Lord Voldemort
. Voldemort
attempted to kill Harry too, but failed, making Harry the boy who lived. On Harry s 11th
birthday, he received many letters inviting him to attend Hogwarts, a School of Witchcraft and
Wizardry. A man named Hagrid comes to take him and that is where Harry s journey begins.
They are pretty similar, but in some ways they differ. Some similarities are that they use their
wits and strengths to get their way through problems, and they both have a desire to see their
family. But they also differ in the way that their goals are completely different, Odysseus wants to
get home to Ithaca, and Harry wants to stay as far away from his home, with the Dursleys as
possible. So they use their brain as a problem solver, they have a longing for their family, but they
both want to go in a different direction.
First off, Odysseus and Harry both use their wits. In the story of Odysseus, he is stuck sailing on
the sea. He comes face to face with many dangerous and terrifying obstacles, and during every
obstacle he has to survive whilst using his knowledge. One big part of the story is when Odysseus
and his men get

One of the bigger arguments against a gap year is not going back. Parent of the students fair that
a year away from school can make them go completely against college. Being away from school
may lessen stress for students and they definitely don t want to go back to such a stressed and
structured lifestyle. Also if that person is working during their gap year and making money the
idea of going to college and putting yourself into crippling debt isn t very appealing, therefore
steering them away from returning back to school. Another issue is students will see a gap year
as literal time off and won t do anything constructive with their time. Wasting a whole year on just
sitting around, eating junk food and watching Netflix is very counterproductive. It will put you
behind of your peers. Additionally gap years can add on expensive, particularly if you traveled.
Putting more financial debt on yourself can cause greats amount of stress and make it much more
difficult to dig yourself out of (Knoll, 2012). Another issue that can arise is how much further
behind you are on graduating can put you behind overall in your career goals in life. Particularly if
you are interested in pursuing a career in math, science, or language. Jobs in these fields are fast
paced and take a lot of maintaining, so not practicing them or studying them a year can hurt your
previous skills on them, making you forget many things. Instead what is

Star Spangled Banner Music Analysis
We are all familiar with our national anthem and some of us may have even learned in
elementary school that the lyrics were penned by Francis Scott Key but do you know who
composed the music? The music for the Star Spangled Banner was composed by John Stafford
Smith. He was a musicologist, composer, and church organist from Gloucester, England. He
lived from 1750 to 1836 and was the son of church organist Martin Smith. John was a choirboy at
the Chapel Royal in London, England and he was a pupil of the famous composer William
Boyce. John Stafford Smith was elected as a member of the exclusive Anacreontic Society and
composed the music for the society s constitutional song To Anacreon in Heaven (a.k.a. The
Anacreontic Song). It was this same music that was used for the Star Spangled Banner . This
melody after it was originally composed became popular not only in England but also in Ireland,
where, with different words, it was used as a drinking song. Later, the melody came to America.
One of the earliest alterations of this melody in America was the Boston patriotic song by Thomas
Paine, Adams and Liberty, which appeared in 1797. Sometime later, it was used with other lyrics
in Jefferson and Liberty. This melody was so popular in America, in fact, it was adapted to more

History Paper Burial Practices, Concept of After Life...
The concept of afterlife existed among many ancient civilizations. It was met as a way of
understanding the present or as a way to predict the future depending on their needs. As such, in
order to explain the unknown phenomenon that impacted their daily life, early tribes saw natural
events as simple as the rain and the winds or birth and deathand regarded them to be controlled by
supernatural powers related to the gods, demons, the moon, the sun or other external driving
forces. Ancient people sought protection for survival and power to maintain order with the tribes
by practicing rituals which were aimed to invoke the spirit of the deceased. However, as
civilizations evolved with time, their beliefs became more complex and profound.... Show more

However, the suffering in the other world would end eventually. Romans funeral rituals usually
included washing the corpse, laying it flat on a sofa or bed, and dressing it with the finest clothes
that individual had ever possessed. A coin would then be placed under the tongue or on the eyes so
that he could pay the ferryman Charon for rowing him to the land of the dead.
The marble urn I observed at the Met dated from mid 1st 2nd century A.D. was used to place the
ashes of the deceased after the body was cremated. As time went by, they came to understand
that the dissolution of the body was inevitable and the physical body was only a temporary host
of the soul. This piece of artifact provided evidence that in ancient Romans point of view, the
remains of the physical body had to be disintegrated in order for the soul to begin a new life. It is
reasonable to conclude that Romans regarded cremating the body of the dead as a naturally faster
way to begin the life in the other world than slow disintegration of the corpse.
On the other hand, Egyptians believed that the person s physical body was more than a temporary
host and it had to remain intact, a condition necessary to attain the afterlife. Moreover, they
contemplated the idea that a person was the combination of several elements such as, the ba ,
which was the non physical part of the individual and the ka which was a universal force shared by
all.

Canadian Food Research Paper
4 Canadian food Last Friday, my friend and I were taken to the cafeteria by Mr. Brian and ate
famous Canadian food, poutine, for the first time. Poutine is popular fast food in Canada, and it
includes deep fried potato with gravy and cheese curds. The appearance is not good, but the taste
is excellent. I was surprised to eat my first taste and I want to know Canadian foodmore. Basically,
Canadian food is mostly a mixture. A former prime minister in Canada, Joe Clark said, Canada
has a cuisine of cuisines. Not a stew pot, but a smorgasbord . It means that Canadian food is
influenced by various immigrants and all in all, the roots are First Nation, the UK, and France.
This is some examples of famous Canadian food, Pemmican from First Nation, Nanaimo bar from
Vancouver, poutine from France, and pancakes and maple syrup from the UK and New England.

There are various theories about the history of poutine, but the most widespread claim comes
from a restaurant in Warwick, Quebec in 1957. The owner is the first one to have served poutine

beef and lobster.
All in all, Canadian food was originated from other countries and have been developed in Canada.
It is commonly said that Canada is a melting pot of cuisines. As one of the reasons for the fact,
Canadian food connects with multiculturalism. As people migrated to Canada during the war, some
traditional food like poutine and pancakes were brought to Canada in the past. As the result,
multiculturalism in Canada was promoted and now food around the world are creating a culture of

My Experience On My Life
My life peaked when I was around seven years old. My two best friends were in my class, I read
at a third grade level, I spent my time investigating my backyard while watching my mother
garden and climbing trees with my brother. I had it all. Come age eight I was hindered by
prescription glasses, forced to wear pigtails because the Great Lice Outbreak of 08 and to top
that nice pile off, none of my friends were in my class. I can only imagine what I seemed like to
others. During that time period one thing stayed constant my curiosity for the things around me,
exploring my garden. I would dig up different rocks and neatly arrange them in a line, always
wondering where they came from. My curiosity heightened when I went to California and actually
experienced an earthquake, a small one albeit, but an earthquake nonetheless. Now, things have
gotten better since second grade, but I ve never quite achieved the same level of satisfaction in my
life as my seven year old self. I have, however, been able to research and attempt to understand with
the way the subterranean world works.

mass(Earth s Interior). Next we have the metaphorical egg whites the outer core and the mantle.

convey the Aunt s acceptance to the authority of the husband. The death of her husband wasn t
enough to heal the wounds from his torture and atrocities, which haunted her and left her scarred
for life. The war photographer remembers vaguely the woman whose permission he sought
without words to do what someone must in order to take a picture of her dead husband so that
he can bring the deathly image back home for work purposes. He is deeply saddened by this
because the everyday society in which he is living show apathy to the other realm where people
suffer and die pointlessly in the war fields. He realizes the pain he inflicts towards himself and the
other suffering people due to the fact that he is making a living out of capturing images of people s
misery.
The fact that the main person remains anonymous throughout the poem, suggests that anyone in
this world, even you and I, could be also living a double life. This man is the symbol of truth for
the tragedy of society and

All Quiet On The Western Front Earth Quotes
In the novel All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Remarque, the central symbol is the earth.
Earth represents life, death and perverse nature. It ties to other symbols such as dirt, ground,
trenches, and plants. Earth represents life because it provided protection and shelter to keep the
soldiers alive.. Basically, when the soldiers cling on to earth, they are basically clinging on to life
because earth provides them with the necessary essentials to be sustain life such as food which
gives them life. Earth is the only thing that the soldiers can rely on to keep them alive in the war.
(?) Ironically, the earth also represents death because she soldiers who die in the war would be
buried underneath in the ground. Earth is where the decrease... Show more content on

According to page 55 of chapter 4, it states In the spasm of terror, under the hailing of
annihilation in the bellowing of death of the explosions, O Earth, thou grantest us the great
resisting surge of new won life. Our being, almost utterly carried away by the fury of the storm,
streams back through our hands from thee, and we, thy redeemed ones, bury ourselves in thee...
(Analyze quote) The quote is what shows that earth represents life because us what saves the
soldiers from possible death. It is so as earth takes on the role of being the soldiers source of life
as it is the most crucial thing there is to them in battle to stay alive. The soldiers uses earth to do
sustain life, they dig up trenches, find shelter and food which all gives homes keep them alive
and on the go. (how does it all keep them alive?) In this quote specially, a bombardment had
occurred and the soldiers used the earth to shelter and bury themselves into it. The relationship
between the soldiers is just like the relationship between a mother and her child, who protects and
nurtures the child. When the child is scare and in a state of terror, the child would rely on the
mother to stabilize with this, the mother offers new life to the child just like how the earth offer
new life to the soldiers fighting at the front by being place of comfort. This shows how earth

The One Child Policy And Gender Bias
Everyday, people talk about major global issues, such as the economy, access to better health care,
and education. However, one major issue that still needs to be addressed in particular is access to
education for women in various countries. Women s access to education is more limited in China in
comparison to the access to education in the United States, due to the one child policy and gender
bias. Women s access to education in China is much more limited than it is to women in the
United States and one main reason for this is something called the one child policy. The one child
policy basically states that families in China are only allowed to have one child. Before the one
child policy existed, parents had families with more than one child; this often led to parents
favoring the malechild (Lee, 2012, p. 41). When parents favor their male child, this is referred to
as son preference and son preference is something that has continued in China among most parents
for centuries (Lee, 2012, p. 41). Male children, therefore, are preferred and more privileged, leaving
little or no opportunity for the femalechildren to progress educationally. This gender bias has
resulted in significant gender inequalities in many respects, such as the large gap in the literacy
rate or in educational attainment between the genders (Lee, 2012, p. 41). Both the gender bias and
son preference have led to the wide literacy gap as a consequence and this is something that needs
to change. If a

Confederate Army Morality
The Confederate Army Moral over matter? The Civil War was a fight to the death on the
principle of setting another man free. It was a brutal for year battle, Union VS Confederacy,
Yankees VS Rebels, pledging their last measure. The Civil War is one of the most famous wars in
the world. Most Civil War information focuses on the victors, the Union/Yankees. The cause of
this war began with the Compromise of 1850 which tried to maintain political balance between free
and slave states in Congress. However, the election of 1860 was the final straw, causing the
separation of the northern and southern states. The southern states seceded because they feared
Abraham Lincoln, now president, would abolish slavery thus causing the Civil War. The Civil War
began in 1861 at Fort Sumter and ended when General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox
Courthouse in 1865. While the Confederacy had undeniably talented generals, their well known
arrogance may have been the cause of their demise.
The Confederate States of America consisted of 11 total Southern states that seceded from the
Union, assuming the affairs of a separate government, convinced that their way of life, based on ...

ground. The aftermath resulted in the blackened remains of barns, mills, horses, and cattle. The
ammunition was the direct cause of pollution expansion in air and water nearby. In the deep south
disorganization spread to prairies and plains. Monocultural farms became food supplies for Union
soldiers, leaving most Confederate soldiers ill fed and ill supplied which ruined monocultural
predilections. After the Civil War the United States government spent an estimated $2.5 million
daily beginning in 1863 trying to restore former battlefields. This 4 year war heavily affected

The Importance Od Ethics And Social Responsibility
Ethics and social responsibility are very important irrespective of the community in which you
conduct business in. All stakeholder groups are benefited from the use of ethical behavior. For one,
stock holders benefit as the financial numbers used to evaluate and engage in business activities are
legitimate. These numbers will therefore provide a solid foundation in which to evaluate the merits
of a particular activity such as a merger, acquisition, dividend, stock buy back and so forth.
Consumers benefit as they are not mislead in regards to purchasing decisions. These builds trust as
the brand will become synonymous with ethicsfurther expanding the market share of the company.
This will then benefit the shareholders even further as more consumers purchase products from this
trusted company. The community benefits as the company contributes to the community through
the profits garnered from sales (Business, 2011). As such, all stakeholder groups benefit and
flourish. Social responsibility is no different in this regard. Companies, especially during tough
economic circumstances want to demonstrate their commitment to the communities in which they
operate. Usually, these commitments translate into high sales figures and better customer loyalty.
Social responsibility also engages associates on a personal level as they can volunteer and
contribute to causes pertinent to their beliefs. These increases employee satisfaction which
ultimately helps improve productivity.

Alcoholics Anonymous ( A.a )
Founded in 1935, Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.) is a 12 step spiritual program for those who
have a desire to stop drinking. It is open to all those who seek help all over the world. Thousands
of alcoholics have become victorious because of the spiritual foundation it was built on. In 1939 the
first book, Alcoholics Anonymous, was published. It held all of the struggles and hope filled
stories of some of the first alcoholics that joined the group. This book, later called The Big Book
, would lay down all of the suggestions for an alcoholic if he or she wanted to live a sober life.
The program focuses on the 12 steps to help newcomers adjust to this way of life. Upon entering
the program, it is suggested that the newcomer pick a sponsor to help guide them through the
steps. Furthermore, service work within the fellowship is also recommended. The sole purpose
of Alcoholics Anonymous is to help someone achieve sobriety. As a non alcoholic, it is easy to
look at a fellowship as big as A.A. and think there may be other motives. There is no other
purpose in A.A. In the Big Book, it states, Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other
alcoholics to achieve sobriety. To have any other mission would be to destroy the foundation this
program was built on. Alcoholic Anonymous is for any sex, race and religious background. The
program targets anyone with an alcohol problem. In some of the meetings, I have attended,

The International Whaling Regime Essay
The International Whaling Regime
In his article, Whale Mining, Whale Saving, Sidney Holt states, saving the whales is for millions
of people a crucial test of their political ability to halt environmental destruction (Holt 1985). In a
world where environmental issues are often so vast that solving them seems impossible, it is rare to
encounter a regime which successfully addresses these problems. If we judge a regime s
effectiveness by its ability to change the behavior of its members and possibly even encourage
others to join, then the whaling regime was in fact quite effective. The significant decrease in
commercial whaling brought about by the International Whaling Commission (IWC) s 1982
moratorium is proof in itself of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This stipulation proved important in the evolution of the IWC over time because as non whaling
nations began to join in the 1960s and 1970s, they increased the pressure on the IWC to turn its
focus from that of market regulation to a preservationist or conservationist standpoint (Andressen
in Implementation and effectiveness... 1998). But why would nations who did not participate in
the whaling industry want to join the IWC? One reason might be that IWC membership was an
easy (and cheap) way to improve their reputation as green minded without having to make any
significant changes in policy. Furthermore, the decades between the 1960s and 1980s saw an
increase in the number of NGO s taking on the cause of whale conservation which also drove the
IWC to re evaluate its goals and objectives. As a result, the IWC agreed upon a 10 year moratorium
on commercial whaling in1982 and put it into effect in 1986. The moratorium prohibited all
commercial whaling, and granted certain quotas to indigenous peoples who needed the whales for
subsistence, and to scientific research efforts. After the10 year period, it was decided that a
Comprehensive Assessment would be conducted and enough data would be collected in order to
reconsider the moratorium.
The moratorium proved largely successful in that many stocks of larger whales such as the
Bowhead whale began

It seems as if high school was meant to suck individuality and joy out of students. Go exactly
against the norm, and have as much fun as possible. Clearly, being lively as possible could not
benefit test scores at all. The fourth step is most definitely not putting forth any effort towards
studying. Don t even study the night before a test or quiz. That occasionally helps grades, so put
forth no effort at all. Don t ever bring work home to do, so you can have it done on time. Late
grades are always good as explained in the previous paragraphs. The number one rule with this
step of failing high school is absolutely, at any time, under any circumstances go to tutoring.
Tutoring will support test scores tremendously. This step may be the most important step in failing
all classes. The final step would be to lose as many papers or supplies avaliable. Not having a pencil
or paper leads to missed work also. It damages grades tremendously. Losing papers that was forced
to do is also a good idea. A teacher/professor cannot do anything about lost papers except put a big

In O Brien s book when Ted Lavender died everyone was kind of sad in there own way. If it was
just saying what happened over and over again and annoying others by it , or just thinking it in
their head , thinking it was their fault. When a soldier dies in war the others still alive become
sad because the person they were getting to know and their brother in a way just died right next
to them, they had a connection with each other and now it s gone. In Hardy s poem when he
kills the other soldier, his foe he feels remorse for what he just did. He starts to overthink what he
had just done to a man that could have been his friend, but because their countries were at war,
they were foes from the start of the war even if they were not part of the war yet.
They way that the titles were written The Man He Killed Thomas Hardy , and O Brien s The

it sounds like they are both talking about them killing someone else. Thomas Hardy could have
been talking about himself or someone else in a war that happened before or an upcoming war
that he was just thinking about and that story popped into his head. In O Brien s story we kind of
know it is him talking about him killing another man even though in past chapters he was talking as

A Doll s House by Henrik Isben
In the 1900 s women were not granted with similar privileges as men. Economic suppression,
limited education, and lack of civil rights were the primary issues for women. In the play A Doll
s House, Henrik Isben creates the realization of female oppression through the creation of the
character, Nora. Nora is a woman, whose whole life is ruled by either her father or husband.
Nora Helmer, tries hard to perform the roles expected of a woman, which, however, has led to
her sacrifice of individual ideals and fulfillment of personal freedom. Ibsen reveals Nora s grasp of
independence through his use of symbolism, irony, and development of characters. Nora s first
impression of the audience is being an obedient, money loving, childish wife. In... Show more

who has faces being independent on her own. With the privilege of having school, she
demonstrates how having freedom is a hard struggle however it is attainable. Nora s realization
of woman independence then, drives to show how she has created actions for herself. This can
be seen in the conversation between Mrs Linde and her Mrs. Linde: [smiling] Well, good

anything really serious (1178). Mrs Linde s pushed Nora to reveal her secret. She carries out the
whole project of saving Helmer s life behind everyone s back to show her independent capability.
Throughout the play Ibsen uses symbolism to emphasize Nora s oppression and uprising. In the
beginning of the play the macaroons, were presented when Helmer asked if Nora had eaten one,
in response she lied. Helmer does not want Nora to eat macaroon due to his desire to have a
perfect trophy wife, and in order to obtain such desire, watching the weight is one key he must

The Last Supper
The Last Supper Research Essay
The Last Supper is a religious scene in the Catholic bible, which tells the story of the last meal the
night before the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. An important role in its religion, the Last Supper scene
has been recreated by artists many times. These visual interpretations of the event generally show
Jesus, surrounded by his disciples. During the meal, Jesus breaks the bread and serves the wine
accompanied with the command Take this all of you and eat it... this is my body... do this in
remembrance of me . Three artists who have produced paintings of the Last Supper include
Leonardo DaVinci, Jacopo Tintoretto and Salvador Dali. Each of these artists interpreted the
religious event and recreated it in terms ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In contrast to the physical reaction of the disciples, Jesus is calm with a peaceful equilibrium and a
dignified strength. He sits with his palms upturned to form a triangle with his arms and head, which
again refers to the number three symbolising the Holy Trinity.
By choosing this part of the story; he also chooses to leave out the bread and the wine normally
sitting on the table in visuals of the Last Supper. Leonardo s version is also the first to have Judas
sitting on the same side of the table as Jesus. Judas is identifiable by the symbols employed by
Leonardo, such as the money bag clutched tightly in Judas hand and the difference in his gesture
and facial expression to the other disciples. Although this painting breaks conventions, the realism
used by Leonardo helped the paintings function of conveying a true story to its audience to inspire
them to be more faithful.
Perceptions of this artwork will have changed over time, as today s audience is far less religious
and would therefore be more likely to see The Last Supper as an aesthetic piece of artwork rather
than a narrative of a biblical story or connection to God.
After the ride and fall of High Renaissance came the style known as Mannerism. This style involved
developing artist individual style, artificial, aesthetically fantastic images and breaking away from
tradition including Renaissance. Mannerism was inspired by the

The Issue of Gay Marriages
Gay marriage has come to be a pressing topic in the contemporary society as more and more
individuals get actively involved in discussing it. Individuals who oppose same sex marriage are
typically inclined to bring on a deontological argument or to say that legalizing the act might bring
on other issues. In contrast, people who support gay marriages focus on matters related to human
rights and justice. The arguments generated by each of the sides are certainly thought provoking
and it is very difficult for someone to get involved in the debate and actually pick a side concerning
the matter.
Deontologists lobby with regard to how gay marriages are against most values that society is
currently interested in promoting. Christian deontologists are particularly concerned about the
issue of legalizing gay marriages as they believe that this would be in disagreement with basic
laws in their religion. From their perspective, a relationship needs to be natural and needs to occur
between a man and a woman. This position is called physicalism and it involves individuals
fighting with the purpose of preserving and promoting natural behavior as seen from a biological
point of view.
People are used to having a strict understanding of laws and society is largely based on a series of
legislations that keeps its members from getting actively involved in activities that would be
considered wrong from a social perspective. The argument for same sex marriage is often regarded

Role Of Merit In Buddhism
This week s readings are focused on how Buddhist monasteries in China and India play an
important role in producing merit. Both Lopez and Gethin explain the differences each region
played in producing merit through devotional practices. Lopez explains in chapter 27, how
monasteries in China implemented acts of merit into their daily practice. In addition Gethin
illustrates how monks in India lived their lives practicing merit. Even though Buddhist monasteries
play a significant role in producing meritorious acts, the lay community is significant. All four
assemblies of monks, nuns, male lay followers and female lay followers played a role in producing
merit. Merit plays a significant role in the Buddhist monasteries. Merit is not signally

The Effects Of Organized Sports On Children
Organized Sports are Good to Children As the time pass, and as the technology is advancing
rapidly, the tradition of playing outside is diminished rapidly. Many people are concentrating on

express their joyful and brilliance. It prepares children with advantages of physical activities,
confidence, and enjoyment. Participating in organized sports when kids are young arise the
greater results. There are several reasons to support that organized sports are good to children.
First, organized sports are good for children because it improves social skills. Kids who are
participating in team sports have full of confidence. According to Gary R. Collins who writes
the Spotlight or stress, This is especially uncomfortable and stressful when other people expect
us to do one thing, when we fear that we can t do what is expected, and we think that our
inability may cause us to lose respect in the eyes of others. ((( ))) Since everyone is not perfect,
sometimes they can win or lose the games. According to Collins, Acceptance is a third divine
characteristic of success. ((( ))) At the beginning they can be afraid of losing, but it is good
opportunity to have ability of accepting. They will have challenging mind and sense of purpose
with more passion through experiencing many competitions. They will have high self esteem and

Shell Shock And PTSD In Vimy By Vern Thiessen
The Mind at War Men and women, alike, have been fighting for their rights and freedoms over
many centuries. Due to the gruesome acts carried out and witnessed, these wars can inflict
psychological damage to such combatants. Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a condition
where one has been traumatized by something in their past. This ordeal disrupts sleep and causes
the continuous vivid recollection of the upsetting event on a daily basis for the victims (Jones 17).
Countless times, these soldiers return to their families and friends totally changed. In the First
World War, PTSD was unrecognized and was poorly diagnosed as shell shock, which is a term
discussed multiple times in the play Vimy by Vern Thiessen. The men in her play faced

Shell shock and PTSD are very similar when symptoms are concerned. Shell shock is considered to
be an intellectual forerunner to PTSD according to Doctor Stephen Joseph from the University of
Nottingham (Joseph). PTSD is defined by a modern criterion created by the American Psychiatric
Association. The first set of criteria includes either exposure to death, threatened death, serious
injury, or sexual violence in some way (Jones 19). The second criterion involves re living the
experience either through nightmares, flashbacks, upsetting memories, or other occurrences. There
must be a stimulus causing the re experiencing of the trauma (American Psychiatric Association).
The person must have, according to the US Department of Veterans Affairs, negative thoughts or
feelings and trauma related provocation and reactivity that began or are worsened after the trauma
(American Psychiatric Association). These symptoms must last for over one month, cause distress
or impairment to the person, and must not be the result of substance use or medication (American
Psychiatric Association). If all these are met, then the USA declares the person to have PTSD and
are counseled. This was not the case in the First World War. Thiessen depicts this in her play,
Vimy, most noticeably when Clare speaks to Laurie. Clare brings up the topic and immediately
Laurie becomes upset. He demonstrates multiple PTSD symptoms such as upsetting memories, re
experiencing trauma, negative thoughts about his life, long lasting symptoms, and he is clearly
distressed. Clare, the nurse, is frightened by what Laurie has experienced, but does nothing to help
because she does not know how. He clearly states: You re not just getting me. You re getting all
the... mess what s inside me now. And it ain t never going to leave (Thiessen 16). PTSD is
something that will haunt Laurie for the rest of his

Antibiotic Resistance Lab Report
INTRODUCTION
An antibiotic is a medicine that inhibits the growth of or destroys microorganisms, including
bacteria (Microbiology Society, 2018). Antibiotics work by many different mechanisms, but most
commonly inhibit enzymes that are critical for cell wall biosynthesis, protein synthesis,
transcription, DNA replication, or synthesis of metabolites. They also can interfere with the
integrity and permeability of the bacterial cell membrane.
Antibiotic resistance occurs due to the strong selection pressure that antibiotics impose on a
bacterium community. Most bacteria are affected by the antibiotic and are killed, but at times, a
mutation occurs in an individual that leads to a resistant bacterium. This resistant strain can then
spread rapidly due to the lack of competing bacteria (Yurchenko, 2018). This resistance is more
likely to occur from the overuse of antibiotics; therefore, it has been a point of emphasis to use
antibiotics only when necessary and not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bioinformatics is the interdisciplinary field that develops methods and software tools for
understanding biological data such as genetic codes. Using the various software available, one can
study the gene function and gene origin by comparing genetic sequences to a large database of
know sequences. There are two known Colistin resistance genes, MCR 1 and MCR 2, which are
both classified as phosphoethanolamine transferases. These genes are thought to alter the
lipopolysaccharides where the Colistin can no longer act upon them (Yurchenko, 2018). In order to
better understand how the Colistin resistance genes are spreading through bacteria, we wanted to
identify the Colistin resistance gene in bacterial species and analyze their relation on a phylogenic
tree using bioinformatics. This would allow us to answer the question whether the Colistin
resistance gene is spreading by lateral transfer or

Wu Zetian Perpetual Footprint on China Essay
Over a span of several decades, Wu Zetian inalterably changed life in China for woman as well
the clergy and the poor. By doing so, she left a perpetual footprint on China s long history that
transcends the mere fact that she was the first woman to rule the Red Dragon . Wu Zetian was
originally known as Wu Chao, born in 625 in Taiyuan in northern China. She adopted Wu Zetian
when she seized the Chinese throne in 660. Wu Zetian was a beautiful young woman... (Knight
372). Empress Wu ultimately assumed the title of emperor for herself in 690, becoming perhaps
the first dragon lady and the lone woman to act thus in Chinese imperial history. During her reign,
she proved herself the equal of any male emperor in terms of ruthlessness,... Show more content on

She has previously become the empress dowager (the widow of the emperor with the power
over all of his property), then the regent (the substitute for the emperor). However, after the
emperor Gaozong suffered a stroke in 660, Wu seized the real power within China. Wu s slyness
resulted in the exile of members of the royal family that were heirs to the throne and in at least
in one case, to be poisoned (Li Hong). She also had made sure that her late husband Gaozong s
provision in his will that she ascend to the throne became a reality when her third son appointed
her Heir Apparent. She ruled the dynasty on behalf of Gaozong and her son for about three
decades. In 684, Wu s son, Li Zhe, ascended to the Imperial throne, assuming the name Zhongzong.
When it became apparent that Zhongzong would be under greater influence of his wife Wei than
his mother, Wu had him exiled after reducing his title to Prince of Luling. She then had her
youngest son Li Dan made emperor Ruizong whereupon she became both the substantive and actual
ruler. In 690, Empress Wu assumed the title of emperor for herself the lone woman to act as
emperor in Chinese imperial history thereby finally facilitating the great improvement in China that
Wu s legacy left for women, the Buddhist clergy and the classes less fortunate than the aristocracy.
Despite her despotism in ascending to

Positives And Negatives Of The Internet
This essay will discuss both the positives and negatives of the Internet and how it has impacted on
the music industry. Piracy, distribution and networking are just some of the aspects that have

music industry for the better or worse?

CNN Money (2010) Millions of downloaders were attracted by this prospect of free downloads,
which then quickly led to the attraction of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA)
and artist such as Lars Ulrich of Metallica. This eventually led to a court order to shut Napster
down. A heated legal battle between Napster and the RIAA ends in March with an injunction
against the site. Napster shuts down its network in July, declares bankruptcy, and is later reborn as
a legal music subscription service in 2001 . Gearlog (2010)
The MP3 file format enabled music files to be shared with great ease across all computer
systems. The development of the MP3 compression standard in the early 90s allowed vast
amounts of digital audio information to be compressed into manageable files . David
Hesmondhalgh (2007) While the MP3 file format has its positives such as being digital, relatively
small in file size and maintaining good sound quality it also meant it was very easy to share for
free over the Internet.
Digital downloads have largely contributed to lack in CD sales and even forced some stores to
close down or revaluate their businesses. In 2004 Tower Records declared bankruptcy due to

The Role of the Double Plot in King Lear and Hamlet Essay
King Lear and Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, are two plays that reveal similar thematic elements,
yet possess fundamentally different plot structures. Driven by the suffering and rage of two
complementary characters, both plays suggest injustice through good , but ultimately flawed
characters. This shared overarching theme is, however, conveyed differently within each of the
works, as one employs two mainly disparate plotthreads, while the other relies more heavily on the
interaction between the two central plots. Yet the ultimate purpose of this dualism remains the
same within both King Learand Hamlet, in that Shakespeare s use of the double plot illuminates the
tragic elements within both plays, emphasizing core injustices through... Show more content on

This dichotomy between external blames and internal repentance is used by Shakespeare to
demonstrate the tragic nature of King Lear from more than one plane, showing how two
different personalities respond to two similar fates. In Hamlet however, this clear symmetry is
replaced with a more muddled intertwinement. Rather than maintaining two relatively separate
plot threads in the journeys of Lear and Gloucester, Shakespeare opts to interweave the
motivations and fates of Laertes and Hamlet, using their conflict as the central dynamic, while
their parallels take a reduced role. In this sense, while King Lear is driven solely by the dualism
of the story, Hamlet relies on the clash of the two plots to suggest injustice. This injustice, through
conflict, is shown most prominently in Hamlet s and Laertes duel at the end of the play. Hamlet,
describing Laertes as a a very noble youth. (5.1.231), reveals a respect towards his foe that
suggests that it is circumstance, not choice, that forces his hand. Similarly, Laertes singular goal,
To this point I stand, that both the worlds I give to negligence, let come what comes, only I ll be
revenged most thoroughly for my father. (4.5.151 154) shows that his wrath is fueled solely by
duty, such that his pursuit of revenge imparts upon him a single minded myopia that drives him
inexorably towards the final conflict. Ironically, upon meeting Claudius after hearing of his father s
death, Laertes asks How came he

Discuss Fritz Lang s Metropolis and Charlie Chaplin s Modern Times Very few movies portray the relationship between the government and civilian masses during trying moments such as Fritz Lang s Metropolis , and Charlie Chaplin s Modern Times . These are two critically acclaimed films made in the late 1920 s and mid 1930 s. The time period captured is the great depression, and examine the role of the governing authorities in relation to those governed. They effects of mechanization are evident from the opening scene of this film where workers are being monitored by machines in a factory lending credence to his view of human enslavement by technology. At the time of making the film, America was going through high unemployment rates, and corporate downfall as a result of the great depression. Hence, the idea of saving money and time so as to amass huge profits came up hence the introduction of machines to work on behalf of humans. Many film critics have argued that these two films resemble each other even though they were produced almost a decade apart. Both are about the suffering of the ordinary person in the hands of a ruthless upper class. The ordinary man is seeking to live in a normal environment where there are no controls, and work is not mechanized. They all talk about a future where machines take over from human beings and do all the work. The machines even subdue the humans. In both films machines are at the centre of businesses as they make work easier, and increase profits for the elite. Governments in a capitalistic society do not control businesses. Furthermore, in both films the government is unable to take care of the masses as the elitist control all the resources available. In Metropolis , it represents a capitalistic society where only those with the means ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Sexual Exploitation Of Sex Advertising Sexual exploitation is becoming more and more mainstream in advertisements. Everyone knows that sex sells. Especially Carl s Jr. They have developed a reputation with their salacious ad campaigns, often depicting women in very revealing attires. In their recent advertisement for the 2015 Super Bowl, it features model Charlotte Mckinney where she is baring almost everything. There is more to the commercial than just boobs and burgers. The use of Mckinney s body as a sexual object is discriminating to all women and raises sexism. The stereotypical ad brings imparities between genders and promotes genderpolicing. The attention grabbing, super sexy Au Naturel ad first starts off with the model Mckinney, walking through a farmer s market practically naked while strategically placed items are covering her private areas. She clearly has all the attention of the men at the market. She walks by this one man with a spray hose and he completely turns around to catch a look of Mckinney, who appears fully naked, being covered this time by the spraying water from the hose. She catches another man s attention and is a shot of her bare back with a tomato shaped exactly like her behind, perfectly covering just that. The man then pinches and grabs the side of the tomato. The shot after shows her walking towards a scale where again, a man is perfectly barely covering her up by putting two big melons on a scale to replace her breasts. According to cultural relativists, different cultures have different moral codes, and there is no objective truth in ethics. They believe there is no independent standard that can be used to judge one s custom as better than another s. In his article entitled The Challenge of Cultural Relativism, James Rachels offers his argument against the theory of Cultural Relativism by proving the Cultural Differences Argument is unsound and invalid. Further in his article, Rachels reasons against the claims made by cultural relativists, and he argues there are common values shared by all cultures and there exists an independent standard... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If the Cultural Relativism is correct, then each culture will have total freedom in which its people can do whatever they want within their society because what is right is determined by the moral code of that society, and we cannot judge them since there is no independent standard that can be used to judge one s custom. For example, in the late 19th century in the Southern United States, despite the passages of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendment had abolished slavery and made African Americans citizens, the majority of White Americans still perceived the Negroes as inferior. Within the society in the South, the culture determined it was right that whites were superior over blacks and American Whites could do whatever they pleased to the African Americans. Consequently, the violent actions White Americans had committed against the Negroes, such as murdering, lynching and preventing blacks to vote, were culturally acceptable in the South. If the Cultural Ethical Relativism is right, then what these whites had done is justified as correct and they did not commit any moral mistakes since their culture permitted such a ... Parent of the students fair that a year away from school can make them go completely against college. Being away from school may lessen stress for students and they definitely don t want to go back to such a stressed and structured lifestyle. Also if that person is working during their gap year and making money the idea of going to college and putting yourself into crippling debt isn t very appealing, therefore steering them away from returning back to school. Another issue is students will see a gap year as literal time off and won t do anything constructive with their time. Wasting a whole year on just sitting around, eating junk food and watching Netflix is very counterproductive. It will put you behind of your peers. Additionally gap years can add on expensive, particularly if you traveled. • 15. Star Spangled Banner Music Analysis We are all familiar with our national anthem and some of us may have even learned in elementary school that the lyrics were penned by Francis Scott Key but do you know who composed the music? The music for the Star Spangled Banner was composed by John Stafford Smith. He was a musicologist, composer, and church organist from Gloucester, England. He lived from 1750 to 1836 and was the son of church organist Martin Smith. John was a choirboy at the Chapel Royal in London, England and he was a pupil of the famous composer William Boyce. John Stafford Smith was elected as a member of the exclusive Anacreontic Society and composed the music for the society s constitutional song To Anacreon in Heaven (a.k.a. The Anacreontic Song). It was this same music that was used for the Star Spangled Banner . This melody after it was originally composed became popular not only in England but also in Ireland, where, with different words, it was used as a drinking song. Later, the melody came to America. One of the earliest alterations of this melody in America was the Boston patriotic song by Thomas Paine, Adams and Liberty, which appeared in 1797. Sometime later, it was used with other lyrics in Jefferson and Liberty. This melody was so popular in America, in fact, it was adapted to more than 20 different songs.... It was met as a way of understanding the present or as a way to predict the future depending on their needs. As such, in order to explain the unknown phenomenon that impacted their daily life, early tribes saw natural events as simple as the rain and the winds or birth and deathand regarded them to be controlled by supernatural powers related to the gods, demons, the moon, the sun or other external driving forces. Ancient people sought protection for survival and power to maintain order with the tribes by practicing rituals which were aimed to invoke the spirit of the deceased. However, the suffering in the other world would end eventually. Romans funeral rituals usually included washing the corpse, laying it flat on a sofa or bed, and dressing it with the finest clothes that individual had ever possessed. A coin would then be placed under the tongue or on the eyes so that he could pay the ferryman Charon for rowing him to the land of the dead. The marble urn I observed at the Met dated from mid 1st 2nd century A.D. was used to place the ashes of the deceased after the body was cremated. As time went by, they came to understand that the dissolution of the body was inevitable and the physical body was only a temporary host of the soul. This piece of artifact provided evidence that in ancient Romans point of view, the remains of the physical body had to be disintegrated in order for the soul to begin a new life. It is reasonable to conclude that Romans regarded cremating the body of the dead as a naturally faster way to begin the life in the other world than slow disintegration of the corpse. On the other hand, Egyptians believed that the person s physical body was more than a temporary host and it had to remain intact, a condition necessary to attain the afterlife. Moreover, they contemplated the idea that a person was the combination of several elements such as, the ba , which was the non physical part of the individual and the ka which was a universal force shared by all. Poutine is popular fast food in Canada, and it includes deep fried potato with gravy and cheese curds. The appearance is not good, but the taste is excellent. I was surprised to eat my first taste and I want to know Canadian foodmore. Basically, Canadian food is mostly a mixture. A former prime minister in Canada, Joe Clark said, Canada has a cuisine of cuisines. Not a stew pot, but a smorgasbord . This is some examples of famous Canadian food, Pemmican from First Nation, Nanaimo bar from Vancouver, poutine from France, and pancakes and maple syrup from the UK and New England. As people migrated to Canada during the war, some traditional food like poutine and pancakes were brought to Canada in the past. Come age eight I was hindered by prescription glasses, forced to wear pigtails because the Great Lice Outbreak of 08 and to top that nice pile off, none of my friends were in my class. I can only imagine what I seemed like to others. During that time period one thing stayed constant my curiosity for the things around me, exploring my garden. I would dig up different rocks and neatly arrange them in a line, always wondering where they came from. My curiosity heightened when I went to California and actually experienced an earthquake, a small one albeit, but an earthquake nonetheless. Now, things have gotten better since second grade, but I ve never quite achieved the same level of satisfaction in my life as my seven year old self. Lying roughly 6400 km below the surface, the inner core is composed of iron and nickel. It s extremely hot and dense, so much so that it takes up roughly 1/3 of the Earth s mass(Earth s Interior). • 22. The One Child Policy And Gender Bias Everyday, people talk about major global issues, such as the economy, access to better health care, and education. However, one major issue that still needs to be addressed in particular is access to education for women in various countries. Women s access to education is more limited in China in comparison to the access to education in the United States, due to the one child policy and gender bias. Women s access to education in China is much more limited than it is to women in the United States and one main reason for this is something called the one child policy. The one child policy basically states that families in China are only allowed to have one child. Before the one child policy existed, parents had families with more than one child; this often led to parents favoring the malechild (Lee, 2012, p. 41). When parents favor their male child, this is referred to as son preference and son preference is something that has continued in China among most parents for centuries (Lee, 2012, p. 41). Male children, therefore, are preferred and more privileged, leaving little or no opportunity for the femalechildren to progress educationally. This gender bias has resulted in significant gender inequalities in many respects, such as the large gap in the literacy rate or in educational attainment between the genders (Lee, 2012, p. 41). Both the gender bias and son preference have led to the wide literacy gap as a consequence and this is something that needs to change. If a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It was a brutal for year battle, Union VS Confederacy, Yankees VS Rebels, pledging their last measure. The Civil War is one of the most famous wars in the world. Most Civil War information focuses on the victors, the Union/Yankees. The cause of this war began with the Compromise of 1850 which tried to maintain political balance between free and slave states in Congress. However, the election of 1860 was the final straw, causing the separation of the northern and southern states. The southern states seceded because they feared Abraham Lincoln, now president, would abolish slavery thus causing the Civil War. The Civil War began in 1861 at Fort Sumter and ended when General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse in 1865. • 24. The Importance Od Ethics And Social Responsibility Ethics and social responsibility are very important irrespective of the community in which you conduct business in. All stakeholder groups are benefited from the use of ethical behavior. For one, stock holders benefit as the financial numbers used to evaluate and engage in business activities are legitimate. These numbers will therefore provide a solid foundation in which to evaluate the merits of a particular activity such as a merger, acquisition, dividend, stock buy back and so forth. Consumers benefit as they are not mislead in regards to purchasing decisions. These builds trust as the brand will become synonymous with ethicsfurther expanding the market share of the company. This will then benefit the shareholders even further as more consumers purchase products from this trusted company. The community benefits as the company contributes to the community through the profits garnered from sales (Business, 2011). As such, all stakeholder groups benefit and flourish. Social responsibility is no different in this regard. Companies, especially during tough economic circumstances want to demonstrate their commitment to the communities in which they operate. Usually, these commitments translate into high sales figures and better customer loyalty. Social responsibility also engages associates on a personal level as they can volunteer and contribute to causes pertinent to their beliefs. The International Whaling Regime Essay The International Whaling Regime In his article, Whale Mining, Whale Saving, Sidney Holt states, saving the whales is for millions of people a crucial test of their political ability to halt environmental destruction (Holt 1985). In a world where environmental issues are often so vast that solving them seems impossible, it is rare to encounter a regime which successfully addresses these problems. If we judge a regime s effectiveness by its ability to change the behavior of its members and possibly even encourage others to join, then the whaling regime was in fact quite effective. This stipulation proved important in the evolution of the IWC over time because as non whaling nations began to join in the 1960s and 1970s, they increased the pressure on the IWC to turn its focus from that of market regulation to a preservationist or conservationist standpoint (Andressen in Implementation and effectiveness... 1998). But why would nations who did not participate in the whaling industry want to join the IWC? One reason might be that IWC membership was an easy (and cheap) way to improve their reputation as green minded without having to make any significant changes in policy. Furthermore, the decades between the 1960s and 1980s saw an increase in the number of NGO s taking on the cause of whale conservation which also drove the IWC to re evaluate its goals and objectives. As a result, the IWC agreed upon a 10 year moratorium on commercial whaling in1982 and put it into effect in 1986. The moratorium prohibited all commercial whaling, and granted certain quotas to indigenous peoples who needed the whales for subsistence, and to scientific research efforts. Perceptions of this artwork will have changed over time, as today s audience is far less religious and would therefore be more likely to see The Last Supper as an aesthetic piece of artwork rather than a narrative of a biblical story or connection to God. After the ride and fall of High Renaissance came the style known as Mannerism. This style involved developing artist individual style, artificial, aesthetically fantastic images and breaking away from tradition including Renaissance. Mannerism was inspired by the ... Then I made another pile for me to sit on since I was still in my school clothes. Since the sack was already broken I did not need to break it, so I held on to the hoofs and every time she had a contraction I would pull slightly so that it would be easier. Then I heard the opening and closing of doors, then I saw my mom coming around the corner. How is it going? She asked. Fine, the kid s hoofs and legs are out, I said still watching Evie. After three more contractions the kid comes sliding out, and into the new world. I take the towel and wipe off all the slime that was on the kid s face. The kid was black and brown. • 40. The Issue of Gay Marriages Gay marriage has come to be a pressing topic in the contemporary society as more and more individuals get actively involved in discussing it. Individuals who oppose same sex marriage are typically inclined to bring on a deontological argument or to say that legalizing the act might bring on other issues. In contrast, people who support gay marriages focus on matters related to human rights and justice. The arguments generated by each of the sides are certainly thought provoking and it is very difficult for someone to get involved in the debate and actually pick a side concerning the matter. Deontologists lobby with regard to how gay marriages are against most values that society is currently interested in promoting. Christian deontologists are particularly concerned about the issue of legalizing gay marriages as they believe that this would be in disagreement with basic laws in their religion. From their perspective, a relationship needs to be natural and needs to occur between a man and a woman. This position is called physicalism and it involves individuals fighting with the purpose of preserving and promoting natural behavior as seen from a biological point of view. People are used to having a strict understanding of laws and society is largely based on a series of legislations that keeps its members from getting actively involved in activities that would be considered wrong from a social perspective. Both Lopez and Gethin explain the differences each region played in producing merit through devotional practices. Lopez explains in chapter 27, how monasteries in China implemented acts of merit into their daily practice. In addition Gethin illustrates how monks in India lived their lives practicing merit. Even though Buddhist monasteries play a significant role in producing meritorious acts, the lay community is significant. All four assemblies of monks, nuns, male lay followers and female lay followers played a role in producing merit. Merit plays a significant role in the Buddhist monasteries. Merit is not signally ... • 44. Shell Shock And PTSD In Vimy By Vern Thiessen The Mind at War Men and women, alike, have been fighting for their rights and freedoms over many centuries. Due to the gruesome acts carried out and witnessed, these wars can inflict psychological damage to such combatants. Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a condition where one has been traumatized by something in their past. This ordeal disrupts sleep and causes the continuous vivid recollection of the upsetting event on a daily basis for the victims (Jones 17). Countless times, these soldiers return to their families and friends totally changed. In the First World War, PTSD was unrecognized and was poorly diagnosed as shell shock, which is a term discussed multiple times in the play Vimy by Vern Thiessen. The men in her play faced ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Shell shock and PTSD are very similar when symptoms are concerned. Shell shock is considered to be an intellectual forerunner to PTSD according to Doctor Stephen Joseph from the University of Nottingham (Joseph). PTSD is defined by a modern criterion created by the American Psychiatric Association. The first set of criteria includes either exposure to death, threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence in some way (Jones 19). The second criterion involves re living the experience either through nightmares, flashbacks, upsetting memories, or other occurrences. There must be a stimulus causing the re experiencing of the trauma (American Psychiatric Association). The person must have, according to the US Department of Veterans Affairs, negative thoughts or feelings and trauma related provocation and reactivity that began or are worsened after the trauma (American Psychiatric Association). These symptoms must last for over one month, cause distress or impairment to the person, and must not be the result of substance use or medication (American Psychiatric Association). If all these are met, then the USA declares the person to have PTSD and are counseled. This was not the case in the First World War. Thiessen depicts this in her play, Vimy, most noticeably when Clare speaks to Laurie. Clare brings up the topic and immediately Laurie becomes upset. He demonstrates multiple PTSD symptoms such as upsetting memories, re experiencing trauma, negative thoughts about his life, long lasting symptoms, and he is clearly distressed. Clare, the nurse, is frightened by what Laurie has experienced, but does nothing to help because she does not know how. He clearly states: You re not just getting me. • 45. Antibiotic Resistance Lab Report INTRODUCTION An antibiotic is a medicine that inhibits the growth of or destroys microorganisms, including bacteria (Microbiology Society, 2018). Antibiotics work by many different mechanisms, but most commonly inhibit enzymes that are critical for cell wall biosynthesis, protein synthesis, transcription, DNA replication, or synthesis of metabolites. They also can interfere with the integrity and permeability of the bacterial cell membrane. Antibiotic resistance occurs due to the strong selection pressure that antibiotics impose on a bacterium community. Most bacteria are affected by the antibiotic and are killed, but at times, a mutation occurs in an individual that leads to a resistant bacterium. This resistant strain can then spread rapidly due to the lack of competing bacteria (Yurchenko, 2018). This resistance is more likely to occur from the overuse of antibiotics; therefore, it has been a point of emphasis to use antibiotics only when necessary and not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Bioinformatics is the interdisciplinary field that develops methods and software tools for understanding biological data such as genetic codes. Using the various software available, one can study the gene function and gene origin by comparing genetic sequences to a large database of know sequences. There are two known Colistin resistance genes, MCR 1 and MCR 2, which are both classified as phosphoethanolamine transferases. These genes are thought to alter the lipopolysaccharides where the Colistin can no longer act upon them (Yurchenko, 2018). In order to better understand how the Colistin resistance genes are spreading through bacteria, we wanted to identify the Colistin resistance gene in bacterial species and analyze their relation on a phylogenic tree using bioinformatics. This would allow us to answer the question whether the Colistin resistance gene is spreading by lateral transfer or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Wu s slyness resulted in the exile of members of the royal family that were heirs to the throne and in at least in one case, to be poisoned (Li Hong). She also had made sure that her late husband Gaozong s provision in his will that she ascend to the throne became a reality when her third son appointed her Heir Apparent. She ruled the dynasty on behalf of Gaozong and her son for about three decades. In 684, Wu s son, Li Zhe, ascended to the Imperial throne, assuming the name Zhongzong. When it became apparent that Zhongzong would be under greater influence of his wife Wei than his mother, Wu had him exiled after reducing his title to Prince of Luling. She then had her youngest son Li Dan made emperor Ruizong whereupon she became both the substantive and actual ruler. • 49. The Role of the Double Plot in King Lear and Hamlet Essay King Lear and Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, are two plays that reveal similar thematic elements, yet possess fundamentally different plot structures. Driven by the suffering and rage of two complementary characters, both plays suggest injustice through good , but ultimately flawed characters. This shared overarching theme is, however, conveyed differently within each of the works, as one employs two mainly disparate plotthreads, while the other relies more heavily on the interaction between the two central plots. Yet the ultimate purpose of this dualism remains the same within both King Learand Hamlet, in that Shakespeare s use of the double plot illuminates the tragic elements within both plays, emphasizing core injustices through... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This dichotomy between external blames and internal repentance is used by Shakespeare to demonstrate the tragic nature of King Lear from more than one plane, showing how two different personalities respond to two similar fates. In Hamlet however, this clear symmetry is replaced with a more muddled intertwinement. Rather than maintaining two relatively separate plot threads in the journeys of Lear and Gloucester, Shakespeare opts to interweave the motivations and fates of Laertes and Hamlet, using their conflict as the central dynamic, while their parallels take a reduced role. In this sense, while King Lear is driven solely by the dualism of the story, Hamlet relies on the clash of the two plots to suggest injustice. This injustice, through conflict, is shown most prominently in Hamlet s and Laertes duel at the end of the play. Hamlet, describing Laertes as a a very noble youth. (5.1.231), reveals a respect towards his foe that suggests that it is circumstance, not choice, that forces his hand. Similarly, Laertes singular goal, To this point I stand, that both the worlds I give to negligence, let come what comes, only I ll be revenged most thoroughly for my father. (4.5.151 154) shows that his wrath is fueled solely by duty, such that his pursuit of revenge imparts upon him a single minded myopia that drives him inexorably towards the final conflict. Ironically, upon meeting Claudius after hearing of his father s death, Laertes asks How came he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
