Assessment and Nurses
Module Assessment The aim of this assignment is to explore the four stages of APIE, explaining their
importance in nursing, as well as identifying possible problems within the stages, in relation to the
videos of Joe. These issues will then be anaylsed using theory, to create possible explanations and
consequences for the behaviour and actions shown by Joe and the nurses. APIE is a nursing process
which guides health professionals through the problem solving approach, which promotes the
individualised, holistic delivery of care. It is tailored around the patient s needs and allows nurses to
holistically assess the patient, then plan and set goals according to the information gathered. These
plans and goals are then implemented into the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Stage Two autonomy is also undermined as he is not given the independence of choosing him own
meals or choosing what time he wakes up or eats breakfast. This shows that Joe was not assessed in
accordance with his age. To rectify this problem, Joe needs to be made more autonomous, given
encouragement to use the urinal instead of a catheter and allowing him to make his own choices. The
government White Paper (2006) focuses on the need for individualised care and calls for service to be
tailored around the needs of the individual and not the service provider. It aims to place the individual
in control of their life and promote independence, by providing a more flexible service, with a view to
a reaching and fulfilling a healthy old age. In addition, violence, stress and abuse which pose a threat
to an individual s overall well being, must be identified and addressed. The nurses did not view Joe as
an individual because they did not give him the opportunity to choose what he wanted to eat, or allow
him to get dressed before leaving his room. To adopt a more individualised approach, the nurses
should have let him choose what tine to get up in a morning, allowing him to get dressed and further
choose what he wanted to eat for breakfast, therefore adhering to The White Paper guidelines.

Historical Characters Of The Astell, Galileo, And Florence...
You want to believe it or not, but it was so. It was a raining, dull summer day, not typical for South
Jersey climate. I was rocking in my rocking chair on the porch while reading my Western Civilization
history book. I was on the 15 chapter, reading about outstanding historical characters of the 17
century. I don t know if it was relaxing historical book, or atmosphere, created by the weather, but I
felt how I was drowning in sleep. Suddenly, I heard the loud noise coming from our garage where my
crazy brother was recently working on some mysterious machine. Hearing that noise, I rushed into the
garage where I found my brother screaming that he invented the time machine. At first, I thought it
was his imagination, but then he suggested ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Astell s works inspired many women to follow her ideas. Mary wanted to create the institution that
would be oriented towards women personal development, where they would be able to become self
sufficient beings, both emotionally and intellectually. Her feminist innovation was to recommend that
women should educate themselves, look for ways to support themselves, and cultivate friendships
with other women rather than seeking shelter in the marriage and accepting their husbands as the
absolute authorities. Mary Astell and many other feminist philosopher and writers of the
Enlightenment period spoke out and made their voices heard on the issue of women being educated.
(Sowaal, A).
Making some noise, the time machine produced the bright light, through which I saw the feminine
outline. It was Mary Astell. Confusedly looking around, she came out from the light. Understanding
her astonishment and fright, I hurried to explain the situation. While I was trying to calm down Mary,
my brother brought alive Galileo Galilei. (Galileo Galilei was born in Pisa in 1564 in the family of a
musician and scholar. In 1581 he entered the University of Pisa to study medicine, but soon

major contribution to fields of physics, astronomy, cosmology, mathematics and philosophy

Herbert s Dune
Moreover, the dominant theme within Frank Herbert s Dune is the theme of ecology. Not only did
Herbert focus on environmental ecology but, he also included social, political, economic, and
language ecologies. The term ecology deputes one of the basic divisions of biology (Logan 51).
Ecology is the study of the structure and dynamics of the biological processes that compose and
sustain the earth s ecosystem (Logan 52). Within the ecology article, Logan orates the basic premises
of an ecological interpretation which include that all forms of life exist in co dependent relationships,
nature is lively rather than still, stability of nature depends on assortment, and nature is fragile and

There are Messianic symbols, paradise, rituals, and commandments. The Fremen of Arrakis practiced
a religion most commonly related to Hymn to Water which is a direct copy from the Orange Catholic
Liturgical Manual, calling for rain clouds which Arrakis had never seen. There are five religious
beliefs that were dominant within the Imperium and each had major events that shaped their beliefs.
The first was The followers of the Fourteen Sages and whose views are expressed in the
Commentaries and other literature produced by the Commision of Ecumencial Translators (Dune 811).
The second was the Bene Gesserit which denied being a religion but the entire premise of the Bene
Gesserit school was collectively a religion. The third was the agnostic ruling class which included the
Guild. These people though of religion as a mere game to keep the populations obedient. These same
people believed that all phenomena could be diminished to unconscious explanations. The fourth is
the Ancient teachings that have been collectively gathered. An lastly the fifth being space travel. Space

The Commentaries had a quote about religion that is still applicable in modern day Much that was

is filled with joys pleasing to the eye of God, that knowledge without action is empty. All men must

with ease. You can know it without fail because it awakens within you that sensation that tells you this
is something you ve always known (Dune 818). One of the largest symbols of religion within the

which was in accordance with the planets but

Structure Of An Essential Amino Acid
Task 2: Protein Structure
Task 2a: model of an essential amino acid.
Methionine (C5H11NO2S) is a Non polar (hydrophobic) essential amino acid that contains a sulfur
atom. According to Wolf (2000), a hydrophobic molecule such as Methionine is usually located near
the center of a protein covered by hydrophilic molecules.
The R group of Methionine is relatively non reactive. It, therefore, plays more structural protein roles
than functional protein (Betts Russell, 2003). Due to its non reactivity Methionine does not actively
participate in chemical reaction that occurs at the active site of an enzyme. However, the sulfur atom
has potential for oxidation (Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics, University of
Arizona, 2003). Its flammability likelihood of low, but its combustibility potential can be realized at
high temperatures (Science lab, 2013).
Although the carboxyl end has a pKa of 2.28 and that of the amino end has a pKa pf 9.21 (Science lab,
2013), the R group of Methionine is neutral (Nave, 2012).
Task 2b: A series of diagrams, with clear labels, of the different levels of protein structure (i.e.
Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, Quaternary).
Task 2c: diagram that demonstrates how a peptide bond is made through dehydration, using a
complete chemical equation.
Task 2d: diagram that demonstrates how a peptide bond is broken through hydrolysis, using a
complete chemical equation.

Book Thief Author s Craft Quotes
Book Thief Author s Craft Essay by Sydney Paunan
World War II was one of the darkest periods of time in human history. This is a fact widely known and
accepted by most people, and this era of history is studied very often in schools so the horrors of the
past may be taught and not repeated. But how did this two front war affect young German children?
They were growing up in a wildly violent time whilst being told that the horrible crimes committed by
their country were justified, though this view of the war is often overlooked. Though The Book Thief
does not tell a true story, it is very possible that the events in the story were the reality for many young
children growing up in Nazi Germany. The novel follows an 11 year old girl named Liesel, ... Show

With The Book Thief, the mood created is a somber one, to exemplify the seriousness of the war era.
One example of a dark tone being used is when Max first arrives on Himmel Street, in Molching. The
town hall stood like a giant ham fisted youth, too big for his age. The church disappeared in darkness
the farther his eyes traveled upward. It all watched him. He shivered. He warned himself. Keep your
eyes open. (German children were on the lookout for stray coins. German Jews kept watch for
possible capture) (169). Although this quote could also be used as an example of descriptive language
as well, the intensity of the writing makes it more suitable for author s tone. Markus Zusak s tone
creates a nightmarish air to match the horrors that occurred during the war. Not only is physical
darkness exhibited here in Max s surroundings, but emotional and historical darkness as well. The
second and third forms go hand in hand with each other. Max s tension and wariness is a direct result
of all the darkness spawned from the time period. If the horrible events of the war weren t occurring,
Max would have had no reason to be fearful. He would have been safe. But the harsh reality is that the
war wreaked chaos on many people, a hailstorm of darkness destroying millions of lives across the
globe. The author uses a very appropriate tone

The Story Of Rubik s Cube
Today I want to share my particular story of Rubik s Cube with you. I had an interview with one
university admission office last November. It was a pleasant experience overall, however, when I
mentioned Rubik s Cube to the officer, he did not seem fascinated at all. It makes me reflect on my
affection of Rubik s Cube. Just like the interviewer, many people consider it as one type of the toys,
since they do not know much about it. In my opinion, I think Rubik s Cube is more than just a toy. It
has always been a brain sport and even part of life to me. After I got rejected from Cornell, I was not
disappointed but sad. I started to realize that the Rubik s Cube would be more influential if more

Meiosis In Children Lab Report
Introduction Ever wonder how children inherit their parent s traits? Though every human being is
unique, there are often family shared traits that stand out from family to family. Family similarities
occur because children inherit genes from their parents. Genes are genetic information that contributes
to what traits children get, or don t get, from their parents. A child s genetic information is shared
through tetrads. Tetrads are homologous pairs that carry genes controlling the same inherited trait.
Tetrads are exchanged and distributed to the child during the process of meiosis. Hypothesis Crossing
over in meiosis increases genetic variation in the offspring s traits. Occurring in interphase one,
crossing over is the process ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also, to possibly explore how meiosis ensures new traits and diversity. The data showed that when
going through the meiosis simulation there will be different varieties and possibilities of ending
chromosomes in the four haploid daughter cells. The genetic information of the chromosomes began
to change during prophase. Here, the homologous chromosomes are coming closer to form tetrads and
are exchanging segments of adjacent non sister chromatids. The chromatids can do this by breaking
and reattaching to the other chromatids, this is called crossing over. After this each ending
chromosome varied in genetic information. The completion of the lab the results in 4 haploid cells,
each with a unique set of chromosomes. Therefore, the outcome of meiosis will always be different

White Collar Crime And Organized Crime
Introduction: This paper explores white collar crime and elaborates on the types of organized crimes
through the analysis of case studies. Furthermore, I will also discuss the differences and similarities
between professional crime and organized crime. White collar crime is the use of deceptive acts to
solely benefit oneself, often leaving many victimized. Within this paper, I explain which theories best
clarify why individuals partake in these criminal behaviors, and preventative methods. In addition, I
will state my opinion on the severity of white collar crime and organized crime.
Description: According to Sutherland, the definition of white collar crime is violations of the law
committed by a person of high social status within the course of their otherwise respectable
occupation, business, or profession . Within this definition Sutherland places a significant amount of
emphasis on a few key words. The first key word is of high social status, which excludes those
individuals who are of middle class and lower echelons. Secondly, the deception must occur within the
business setting. White collar crime has a damaging impact on the social morale because it causes
individuals to lose trust in financial institutions, which sends negative images to the middle and lower
class. Without the use of investing, it creates a hindrance to the growth of the economy. Moreover,
many of those victimized do not know they were taken advantage of, and can those their life savings

Wind In The Willows Map Analysis
On page 30, we see the map that shows how limited the scope of her father s life was. The map is
drawn with an internal circular frame that simulates the effect of a magnifying class, as if pulling the
locations (which are likely truly separated by several miles) that much closer together. The text box
overlaying this image, resting inside the scope of the magnifying glass, informs the reader that this
impression of proximity is simultaneously misleading, and accurate. So far, we have only seen it as
misleading. However, if we compare the image produced by this map to the very next panel, we see an
image that zooms in even closer and demonstrates how reluctant his family is to stray from their small
town. The impression we are left with is that their home life is somewhat suffocating, especially as ...

Alison draws parallels between the maps of both her home landscape and the setting of the children s

towards the edge of the map in still life, also functions as a metaphor for her father s existence as he

influenced the way Alison processed the information. Mr. Toad, the boy around her age who died, and

Thoroughbred A thoroughbred is a type of horse. This horse is mostly known for being used as race
horses. These horses are commonly known to be used in flat racing throughout North America.
Though this is how many people know them, this is not all the thoroughbred can do. This is an
amazing breed that is known to be able to do many different things. Thoroughbreds also have a unique
style of how they are built and how they (Blocksdorf n.p.). The breeding of the thoroughbred was the

they are involved in other than racing. The main sports other than racing are jumping, dressage, and

jumps without error and quickly. Dressage is when the horse and rider do patterns in an arena and the
rider is able to make the horse look like it is dancing. This is one of the most difficult things that you
can train a horse to do. Hunting or hunter jumping is when the horse and rider compete in a long cross

It is prudent for us whenever we feel our minds affected with a spiritual palsy, to apply immediately,
like the faithful Centurion, to our God and Saviour for his healing virtue, and to apply to him with that
living faith in His Diviine Omnipotence, for which the Centurion was so eminently distinguished.
Jesus Cleanses a Leper
(Matthew 8: v. 1 5):
When he came down from the mountain, great crowds followed Him. And behold, a Leper came to
Him and knelt before Him, saying Lord, if you will, you can make me clean. And Jesus stretched out
his hand and touched him saying, I will, be clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. And
Jesus said to him, see that you say nothing to anyone, but go and show yourself to the Priest and offer
the gift that Moses commanded for proof to them And the great crowds followed Him from Galilee
and the Decapolis, and from Jerusalem and Judea and from beyond the Jordan.
Leprosy like all other bodily diseases was prevalent at the time. It was a representative figure of the
spiritual disease called profanation of good and of truth which prevailed in the Jewish church at that
time. Profanation means those acts that were not considered to be biblical and sacred, thus the Leper
was guilty of profanation, because he had knowledge of what was true and good but acted contrary to

Literature Review On Visual Art Education
This literature review is concerned with the effective and engaging way to deliver visual art lesson to
students. This is a significant educational topic because research suggests that students engagement in
the classroom has been distinguished as the important indicator for students academic success
(Harbour, Evanovich, Sweigart, Hughes, 2015). Errey and Wood (2011) also suggest that the higher
the level of students engagement will result in a better learning outcome. However, many students
have fallen in the category of disengage during their classroom practice, which also includes art
classroom. The existing literature on visual art education proven that many students in art classroom
claimed that they were bored and showed resistance in their art classes (Pennisi, 2013), they were also
not as enthusiastic about their art project as the teacher (Andrews, 2010). So, the purpose of this
literature review is to discuss several approaches for teachers to effectively deliver art education in the
classroom.
The existing literature on visual art education proven that there is little evidence of how teaching
practice happens in the classroom (Mitchell, 2016). Mitchell (2016) also argues that although there are
several types of research that provide the important information on the foundation of art educations,
there is barely any information that proves how learning effectively occurs in the art education. This
approach might include building a positive relationship (Keeffe, Lovejoy, Spenser Jones, Prain, 2013),
the usage of technology in the classroom (Patton Buffington, 2016), applying student centered
learning (Andrews, 2010).
Student centered Learning
It has been discussed that teacher needs to move away from teacher centered learning and using
student centered learning instead. In this way, instead of being the commander in the classroom,
teacher act as the facilitator and the guide for students, in which helping students in reaching their
desired art projects. It is also necessary for visual art classroom to provide a condition where different
students develop their own potential abilities (Tomljenovic, 2015). This condition could be achieved
by using student centered teaching strategies, which

Blood Imagery In Macbeth Analysis
In western society the mass population is solemnly exposed to bloodshed seen in the rest of the world.
It can be seen that in this society blood and violence act as the undoing of psyches and produce
anarchy. Blood is and always will be the plight of man. In William Shakespeare s Macbeth, blood
imagery acts as the driving force of character development and collapse of their morality. It is
primarily used the frame the evolution of psychological insanity in Macbeth through continuous
murder and lunacy in Lady Macbeth with overwhelming guilt.
The undoing of Macbeth s psychological stability can be seen early on in the play. Macbeth is
originally described to the audience as noble, loyal and valiant so even the idea of murdering his
beloved king defies his entire moral code. This in turn causes him to hallucinate stating Is this a
dagger which I see before me... I have thee not yet I see thee still... art thou but a dagger of the mind, a
false creation... and on thy blade and dudgeon gouts of blood...It is the bloody business that informs
thus to mine eyes. (2.1.40 56). The dagger Macbeth sees is the first sign of mental anguish and
breakdown. The dagger is a metaphor for the guilt and ambition Macbeth has built up inside of him.
The blood he sees on the dagger shows there is still loyalty and nobility within him. It shows that he
knows the consequences of the action he is about to commit. To the surprisal of the audience Macbeth
recognizes this insanity and when stating it is the

Analysis Of The Poem Upon The Burning Of Our House
Since its early days, America has had strong core values based in Christian theology, European
traditions, and Western ideals and morals. The Christian religion (and its many varying tendrils) has
helped unify our nation for centuries. The founders of what is today the United States of America
came over to this continent avoiding persecution for their religion from European powers. While there
have been plethora wars and struggles across Europe over religion, thankfully they have never showed
their face in America, although it is most certainly a part of our heritage. However, it can not be said
that Christianity is the only influence that has been exerted on the American culture. Pagan and secular
traditions and superstitions have been passed from ancient Greece to ancient Rome, then from the
wreckage of those empires in Europe, and carried on all the way through the Dark Ages to 1600 s
pilgrims who carried their culture to a new continent: North America. A remarkably early American
poet was Anne Bradstreet, who wrote the poem Upon the Burning of Our House, which is a tribute to
God. The most important and obvious value that Bradstreet emphasizes in her poem is her devotion to
God. Throughout this poem she mentions him seven times as being her support and lord. In the second
stanza she prays that god will strengthen me in my distress. This demonstrates to us that she trusts
God to take care of her, despite the extreme traumatic experience she just endured. She uses

Keating teaches his students by taking them outside the classroom to encourage them to act for

A Limited Liability Company
iA Limited Liability Company (LLC) is a business structure allowed by state statute. LLCs are
popular because, similar to a corporation, owners have limited personal liability for the debts and
actions of the LLC. Other features of LLCs are more like a partnership, providing management
flexibility and the benefit of pass through taxation.
Owners of an LLC are called members. Since most states do not restrict ownership, members may
include individuals, corporations, other LLCs and foreign entities. There is no maximum number of
members. Most states also permit single member LLCs, those having only one owner.
A few types of businesses generally cannot be LLCs, such as banks and insurance companies. Check

* LLCs in most states are treated as entities separate from their members, whereas in other
jurisdictions[which?] case law has developed deciding LLCs are not considered to have separate legal
standing from their members (see recent D.C. decisions[which?]). * LLCs in some states can be set up
with just one natural person involved. * Less risky to be stolen by fire sale acquisitions (more
protection against hungry investors). * For Real Estate companies, each separate property can be
owned by its own, individual LLC, thereby shielding not only the owners, but their other properties
from cross liability.
Limited liability companies are the popular new choice for business start ups. The LLC has only been
in existence for roughly 26 years and there are some definite pros and cons.
A limited liability company is a creature of state law. Prior to the late 1970s, it had never been a
choice for businesses because it didn t exist. In the late 1970s, the State of Wyoming passed an act
creating it. It took another ten years or so before other states caught on. Once they did, the mad rush
was on to pass legislation allowing for the creation of LLCs in nearly all states. The world of business
entities had been changed forever.

What Is My Hometown Essay
My hometown is Yantai, where is a beautiful city. Yantai lies in the northeast of the Shandong
Province. It is bordered by both the Yellow Sea and the Bohai Sea. It is located at the foot of the hill
and beside the sea with beautiful scenery. Yantai not only has a long history, but also has a cultural
background. Evidence suggests Yantai existed as a city as long as 10000 years ago. And it was visited
three times by the first emperor of the Qin Dynasty, Qinshihuang. The contemporary name of Yantai
came from the watchtowers constructed on Mount Qi in 1398, during the govern of the Hongwu
Emperor, founding emperor of the Ming Dynasty. The towers served to raise alarms against invasions
of Japanese pirates. Although Yantai is located in North ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

New England Ready For War Essay
New England Colony
Are they ready for war?
We the people whom live in thee New England Colonies who were originally from Great Britain
called Puritans and Pilgrims are more of the peaceful type of people whom worship God. We are
people whom want to change the Church of England but saw no change, so we went to the The New
England Colonies to get away from their religious persecution. We are not brutal people such as the
people living in Georgia in the Southern Colonies and are not yet prepared to fight in a war. The
people here came over to worship the way that pleased them. We the people surrounding the busy port
cities of the Boston harbor lived in small towns or villages and church was the center of our daily life.

If there is a war and they plan on getting their food from fishing somebody has to do it and slaves are
not a big part of our population. Then if we decide to trade for food with the Mid Atlantic Colonies or
the Southern colonies, then we would have to wait for those shipments to come in, not having a
bountiful supply on hand. We are not brutal men, for their daily life surrounds around the church and
these people are not prepared. Economically, these people are ready and they make their own
manufactured products and they are able to spread word easily and are always addressing problems.
These people only need natural materials in order to make them so they would be able to be well
supplied. Using the terrain would make so that the French fight uphill and they fight downhill. So
even though there were many things that would help them through the war, their peaceful ways would
prohibit them to be good fighters. I am asking you to help us in many ways if we go to war. First, we
would need training to have better soldiers. Second, we would need to stalk up on supplies and cotton
for clothes to keep them warm. If all of these things are accomplished then the New England Colony
will be ready for

religious and social issues. The author, who is very confident with her beliefs, has stood up and
questioned on a lot of things that she thinks is not right and was not afraid to challenge other people s
view. From this novel, we can see there is an issue arise when Shelina was finding a guy for her.
Shelina practiced her culture s arranged marriage in finding a suitor which is handled by a

she was ready to take the first step. She didn t care what other people might talk about her even though
she was not married at that time and her actions could jeopardized her chances in finding a partner. We
can also relate to this situation as nowadays, there are a lot of things that is not the way it is supposed
to. Someone should take the first step and that is what Shelina did. The first step might be a very small
action but it could lead to a very big result. In our society, we are too afraid that our actions will be
judged by other people and we don t have the courage to influence other people. We expect other
people to start first, but if everyone had the same thinking, who will be the first one to

Fetal Pig And The Human Being s Anatomy
Hypothesis Due to the fact that the fetal pig and the human being s anatomy are extremely similar,
with the exception of a few minor parts, the fetal pig will be a precise tool in learning about the
anatomy of a human.
Introduction
In courses such as biology, anatomy, and physiology, learning the anatomy of a human is imperative to
learning about its functions and processes. Due to a lack of money, resources, and access, UConn
cannot provide the use of a human cadaver for educational purposes. Since we lack actual human
specimens, the next best thing is the fetal pig. The reasoning behind the choice of a fetal pig is because
it is extremely similar to the anatomy of a human, with a few minor differences of course. A study at

Discussion
My hypothesis was correct in addressing how similar the fetal pig and human anatomy are, and how it
helps to learn more about a human. One way in which the fetal pig is particularly similar to a human is
its lungs. The fetal pig s lungs are almost identical to that of a human. They exchange oxygen for
CO2, are located in the same place, and are also multi lobed. Another similarity is the pig s
pericardium. The pericardium is a clear membrane that surrounds the heart, it is composed of an outer
fibrous layer and an inner double layer of serous membrane. Its main purpose is the give the heart
protection against infection and bacteria, and it provides lubrication as well. Every human has their
heart surrounded by this, and so does a fetal pig. When dissecting, the dissector must make a light
incision and remove the pericardium so the heart can be accessed. Although there are many
similarities between the fetal pig and a human, there are also differences. The first difference resides
in the liver. A normal human liver has four lobes: right, left, caudate, and quadrate. While a normal pig
liver has five lobes: right lateral, right central, left central, left lateral, and caudate. Another main
difference is that a fetal pig s colon is a spiral shape. A human s colon is shaped in a sigmoidal pattern
instead ( Human/Pig Comparisons , 2004, September, goshen.edu).

The Uses Of Tissue And Skin
The use of fibroblasts in skin substitutes is a crucial step toward better burn wound healing.
Fibroblasts, which are naturally found in the dermis layer, are in charge of synthesizing and secreting
the components that make up the extracellular matrix. In order for the skin to heal properly, one
component that is especially important is collagen, for it plays a major part in the structure of the skin.
Lack of collagen synthesis during healing can lead to raised scar, resulting in poor skin function and
appearance[18].
TransCyte is a temporary, bioactive synthetic covering with a similar structure to Biobrane, with an
addition of fibroblasts. Like Biobrane, it is also used as covering for burn patients before autografting
or for patients with partial thickness burns who do not require autografts[11][12]. TransCyte consists
of two layers, a silicone outer layer and an inner nylon mesh seeded with fibroblasts. The outer
silicone layer is a semipermeable membrane, containing a series of laser punched holes that allow
excess fluids to be drained[13]. The inner nylon mesh membrane is coated with porcine collagen
peptides, creating the base onto where the neonatal fibroblasts can be cultured, since collagen is a
main component of the skin. In order to seed the fibroblasts within the nylon mesh, the entire
membrane, silicone outer layer included, was placed inside a specially designed bioreactor. This
bioreactor provided a continuous, constant flow of fibroblasts at a rate of about

The Importance Of Cheating In Sports
The lamentable fact is that sometimes cheaters do prosper and no one seems to care. I do. Bending or
breaking the rules only creates worthless victories. From sports to taxes, cheating has the new norm in
our lives. People who are good at cheating gain prestige and respect for working smarter, not harder,
but that is immoral and a fallacy. Cheaters devalue the efforts of those who came before and those
who will follow them in any particular field. This willingness to cheat reverberates through most
sports. My goal, as an athlete, is to be a paragon of good sportsmanship and not cheat. To win through
hard work and effort without cheating is the most important moral principle in my life.
Running is my sport of choice and the focus of many elements in my life. There are ample
opportunities to cheat in a running event. You can use chemical enhancers such as amphetamines or
steroids. This has been the downfall of many top performing athletes, resulting in disgrace and the
removal of their names from coveted pinnacles like various Halls of Fame and Olympic
championships. A personal incident came at our third High School track meet in 2016. I was able to
come from behind and surpass several teammates after an illness had slowed down my training. Hard
work helped me improve my times after I became well. Seeding, or where you start a race, can make a
difference in performance and illness hurt my seeding. Seed Times come from the best personal time
of a season. I noticed

Obese People In Mississippi
We as a state have a problem Mississippi is the state full of the most obese people in the country. It is
recorded that 35.1% of the people living in Mississippi are overweight, that being said we have to
make a change to our state in some way. I don t entirely blame the people of Mississippi for being
overweight; I think our state is to blame to. It is not our fault there is not much to do; the state needs to
find more activities for kids and adults. I think that is why people in other states are not as obese as the
people in Mississippi. The state with the least amount obese people in it is Colorado but I mean I can
see why; there is so much more to do in Colorado you can go snowboarding, rock crawling, and
mountain bike riding and much

The Exorcist Defines the Horror Genre Essay
The horror genre has held a prominent position in culture for most of history. Beginning in folklore,
used as a device to scare children into good behaviors (e.g. The Grimm Brother s Fairy Tales), horror
has integrated its way into the 21st century through film, and in recent years even video games. Yearly,
primarily during the fall when the leaves start to brown and the natural eerie sense of fear fills the air
around Halloween, the film industry likes to fill in the holes between its major grossing seasons by
filling the audience with fear. However, it was Christmas of 1973 that defined the new age of Horror,
when William Friedkin released The Exorcist. According to Julia Heimerdinger of Academia s online
journal, Horror, as a whole, can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In any genre, the correct note at the exact, pivotal moment can leave a member of the audience in
tears, bliss, or suspense. Contrary to Julia Heimdinger s opinion, however, the lack of non digetic
sound tends to be very important to the horror genre. This is because it allows you to experience the
genuine fear that the protagonist is feeling. You can hear their frantic breath, or the creaking of floor
boards, or even the rustling of leaves. This suspends the audience into a very realistic moment of
suspence and fear. According to Clifford G. Schuette of Kansas State University: when sound is taken
out of the equation, one s attention to detail and focus vastly increases (Schuette 13). Once the
soundtrack is removed and only digetic sound remains, the viewer may become more involved and
invested in the scene. This will ultimately create a more intense emotional reaction when the scene s
suspense and tension culminate into the climatic scare.
Special effects are another very important tool in defining the horror genre. In the years leading up to
the 1970s, special effects were almost non existent, or minimal at best, in the film industry. It wasn t
until The Exorcist was released in 1973 that movie goers were hit with believable special effects that
would have been thought impossible a mere half decade before. As a result of these revolutionary
special effects, The

Clara married Esteban Trueba, a man who was harsh, quick to react. During the patriarchal society,
women were a man s possession. They had few rights and were exploited and sometimes rejected by
men (Metzger). Clara doesn t put up with disrespect from any man and when her husband, Esteban,
hits her during a fight, Clara never speak a word to him again (Allende 223). With this act of cruelty
on his part it allowed Clara to escape to her own world of solitude, a spiritual world where Esteban
cannot follow her. This world is without rules, without structure, no subordinate to men, no patriarchy,
no boundaries (Metzger). These is a gift Clara can give to her daughter, Blanca. Clara s only daughter,
Blanca, was not born with the gifts of visions as her mother was but was down to earth, sensual, and
passionate (Rossman 55). Living on an estate in Tres Marias, is where she meets the person that would
ignite her strength of passion, Pedro Tercero. Pedro was a peasant s son who lived on the Trueba s
estate. During this time in Latin America, people stayed with their own class. Pedro being a peasant,

Pouhokio 21 January 2013 PouhokioWater has always been of importance to our people. The Maori
word for water is wai and it should be noted that wai Maori refers to the purest water available. In
ancient Waimarama there were many streams that would originate in the foothills and join together in
to three main streams that would empty out in to the sea. Starting from the northern end we have the
Totara and moving southward we have the Waingongoro and the stream at the northern end is the
Pouhokio. Today the Waingongoro no longer empties in to the sea but has been diverted to join up
with the Totara. The Pouhokio remains almost where it has always been and it is this river that runs
alongside the village settlement. It was the Pouhokio that caused the most damage in the devastating
floods of April 2011. Of ongoing concern to the Maori people of Waimarama has been the
deterioration and decline of these rivers due to pollution and over use for irrigation. We have a long
standing grievance with regard to the Waingongoro River and the recent furore regarding the
encroachment by private landowners on to the Public Pouhokio reserve has bought the Pouhokio
River back in to the limelight. At that time when so many people were claiming rights it occurred to
me that there was little attention

An Interpretation of Graham Greene s The Quiet American
Judging Pyle One of the central themes in Graham Greene s novel, The Quiet American, which
functions more as the thesis of this work of literature, is loss of innocence. Most critics and readers of
this book generally conclude that the loss of innocence is exemplified through the gradual debauchery
of Alden Pyle, the American who comes to live in Vietnam with little first hand experience or
knowledge about the political situation or the people there. One of the principle problems with this
commonly held view of interpretation, however, is that despite how innocuous a background Pyle may
have had when he was in America, his actions in Vietnam are far from innocent. He steals the lover of
his friend; he kills scores of innocent women and children by bombing a very public place at an hour
when it is highly populated. These actions seem more befitting of a quintessential villain rather than
that of an innocent man which poses a significant problem to this traditional interpretation that Greene
s novel is about the loss of innocence of Pyle. However, when one examines the circumstances as well
as the intentions of Pyle throughout much of his involvement in this novel which is fairly substantial it
becomes clearer that for the most part the young man actually is well intentioned, and perhaps even a
victim of circumstance: something that happens to the innocent. An analysis of Pyle s wooing of
Phuong, a young Vietnamese woman, from her substantially older lover Thomas Fowler,

  • 2. Assessment and Nurses Module Assessment The aim of this assignment is to explore the four stages of APIE, explaining their importance in nursing, as well as identifying possible problems within the stages, in relation to the videos of Joe. These issues will then be anaylsed using theory, to create possible explanations and consequences for the behaviour and actions shown by Joe and the nurses. APIE is a nursing process which guides health professionals through the problem solving approach, which promotes the individualised, holistic delivery of care. It is tailored around the patient s needs and allows nurses to holistically assess the patient, then plan and set goals according to the information gathered. These plans and goals are then implemented into the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Stage Two autonomy is also undermined as he is not given the independence of choosing him own meals or choosing what time he wakes up or eats breakfast. This shows that Joe was not assessed in accordance with his age. To rectify this problem, Joe needs to be made more autonomous, given encouragement to use the urinal instead of a catheter and allowing him to make his own choices. The government White Paper (2006) focuses on the need for individualised care and calls for service to be tailored around the needs of the individual and not the service provider. It aims to place the individual in control of their life and promote independence, by providing a more flexible service, with a view to a reaching and fulfilling a healthy old age. In addition, violence, stress and abuse which pose a threat to an individual s overall well being, must be identified and addressed. The nurses did not view Joe as an individual because they did not give him the opportunity to choose what he wanted to eat, or allow him to get dressed before leaving his room. To adopt a more individualised approach, the nurses should have let him choose what tine to get up in a morning, allowing him to get dressed and further choose what he wanted to eat for breakfast, therefore adhering to The White Paper guidelines. ... • 3. Historical Characters Of The Astell, Galileo, And Florence... You want to believe it or not, but it was so. It was a raining, dull summer day, not typical for South Jersey climate. I was rocking in my rocking chair on the porch while reading my Western Civilization history book. I was on the 15 chapter, reading about outstanding historical characters of the 17 century. I don t know if it was relaxing historical book, or atmosphere, created by the weather, but I felt how I was drowning in sleep. Suddenly, I heard the loud noise coming from our garage where my crazy brother was recently working on some mysterious machine. Hearing that noise, I rushed into the garage where I found my brother screaming that he invented the time machine. At first, I thought it was his imagination, but then he suggested ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Astell s works inspired many women to follow her ideas. Mary wanted to create the institution that would be oriented towards women personal development, where they would be able to become self sufficient beings, both emotionally and intellectually. Her feminist innovation was to recommend that women should educate themselves, look for ways to support themselves, and cultivate friendships with other women rather than seeking shelter in the marriage and accepting their husbands as the absolute authorities. Mary Astell and many other feminist philosopher and writers of the Enlightenment period spoke out and made their voices heard on the issue of women being educated. (Sowaal, A). Making some noise, the time machine produced the bright light, through which I saw the feminine outline. It was Mary Astell. Confusedly looking around, she came out from the light. Understanding her astonishment and fright, I hurried to explain the situation. While I was trying to calm down Mary, my brother brought alive Galileo Galilei. (Galileo Galilei was born in Pisa in 1564 in the family of a musician and scholar. In 1581 he entered the University of Pisa to study medicine, but soon discovered that he had a talent for mathematics. Galileo was one of the significant scientists who made major contribution to fields of physics, astronomy, cosmology, mathematics and philosophy (History.com stuff). In 1609 Galileo projected his ... Ecology is the study of the structure and dynamics of the biological processes that compose and sustain the earth s ecosystem (Logan 52). There are five religious beliefs that were dominant within the Imperium and each had major events that shaped their beliefs. The first was The followers of the Fourteen Sages and whose views are expressed in the Commentaries and other literature produced by the Commision of Ecumencial Translators (Dune 811). The second was the Bene Gesserit which denied being a religion but the entire premise of the Bene Gesserit school was collectively a religion. The third was the agnostic ruling class which included the Guild. These people though of religion as a mere game to keep the populations obedient. The Commentaries had a quote about religion that is still applicable in modern day Much that was called religion carries an unconscious attitude of hostility toward life. True religion must teach that life is filled with joys pleasing to the eye of God, that knowledge without action is empty. All men must see that the teaching of religion by rules and rote is largely a hoax. The proper teaching is recognized with ease. You can know it without fail because it awakens within you that sensation that tells you this is something you ve always known (Dune 818). • 5. Structure Of An Essential Amino Acid Task 2: Protein Structure Task 2a: model of an essential amino acid. Methionine (C5H11NO2S) is a Non polar (hydrophobic) essential amino acid that contains a sulfur atom. According to Wolf (2000), a hydrophobic molecule such as Methionine is usually located near the center of a protein covered by hydrophilic molecules. The R group of Methionine is relatively non reactive. It, therefore, plays more structural protein roles than functional protein (Betts Russell, 2003). Due to its non reactivity Methionine does not actively participate in chemical reaction that occurs at the active site of an enzyme. However, the sulfur atom has potential for oxidation (Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics, University of Arizona, 2003). Its flammability likelihood of low, but its combustibility potential can be realized at high temperatures (Science lab, 2013). Although the carboxyl end has a pKa of 2.28 and that of the amino end has a pKa pf 9.21 (Science lab, 2013), the R group of Methionine is neutral (Nave, 2012). Task 2b: A series of diagrams, with clear labels, of the different levels of protein structure (i.e. Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, Quaternary). Task 2c: diagram that demonstrates how a peptide bond is made through dehydration, using a complete chemical equation. • 6. Book Thief Author s Craft Quotes Book Thief Author s Craft Essay by Sydney Paunan World War II was one of the darkest periods of time in human history. This is a fact widely known and accepted by most people, and this era of history is studied very often in schools so the horrors of the past may be taught and not repeated. But how did this two front war affect young German children? They were growing up in a wildly violent time whilst being told that the horrible crimes committed by their country were justified, though this view of the war is often overlooked. Though The Book Thief does not tell a true story, it is very possible that the events in the story were the reality for many young children growing up in Nazi Germany. The novel follows an 11 year old girl named Liesel, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With The Book Thief, the mood created is a somber one, to exemplify the seriousness of the war era. One example of a dark tone being used is when Max first arrives on Himmel Street, in Molching. The town hall stood like a giant ham fisted youth, too big for his age. The church disappeared in darkness the farther his eyes traveled upward. It all watched him. He shivered. He warned himself. Keep your eyes open. (German children were on the lookout for stray coins. German Jews kept watch for possible capture) (169). Although this quote could also be used as an example of descriptive language as well, the intensity of the writing makes it more suitable for author s tone. Markus Zusak s tone creates a nightmarish air to match the horrors that occurred during the war. Not only is physical darkness exhibited here in Max s surroundings, but emotional and historical darkness as well. The second and third forms go hand in hand with each other. Max s tension and wariness is a direct result of all the darkness spawned from the time period. If the horrible events of the war weren t occurring, Max would have had no reason to be fearful. He would have been safe. But the harsh reality is that the war wreaked chaos on many people, a hailstorm of darkness destroying millions of lives across the globe. The author uses a very appropriate tone ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It was a pleasant experience overall, however, when I mentioned Rubik s Cube to the officer, he did not seem fascinated at all. It makes me reflect on my affection of Rubik s Cube. Just like the interviewer, many people consider it as one type of the toys, since they do not know much about it. In my opinion, I think Rubik s Cube is more than just a toy. • 8. Meiosis In Children Lab Report Introduction Ever wonder how children inherit their parent s traits? Though every human being is unique, there are often family shared traits that stand out from family to family. Family similarities occur because children inherit genes from their parents. Genes are genetic information that contributes to what traits children get, or don t get, from their parents. A child s genetic information is shared through tetrads. Tetrads are homologous pairs that carry genes controlling the same inherited trait. Tetrads are exchanged and distributed to the child during the process of meiosis. The genetic information of the chromosomes began to change during prophase. Here, the homologous chromosomes are coming closer to form tetrads and are exchanging segments of adjacent non sister chromatids. The chromatids can do this by breaking and reattaching to the other chromatids, this is called crossing over. After this each ending chromosome varied in genetic information. The completion of the lab the results in 4 haploid cells, each with a unique set of chromosomes. Therefore, the outcome of meiosis will always be different from the initial ... • 9. White Collar Crime And Organized Crime Introduction: This paper explores white collar crime and elaborates on the types of organized crimes through the analysis of case studies. Furthermore, I will also discuss the differences and similarities between professional crime and organized crime. White collar crime is the use of deceptive acts to solely benefit oneself, often leaving many victimized. Within this paper, I explain which theories best clarify why individuals partake in these criminal behaviors, and preventative methods. In addition, I will state my opinion on the severity of white collar crime and organized crime. Description: According to Sutherland, the definition of white collar crime is violations of the law committed by a person of high social status within the course of their otherwise respectable occupation, business, or profession . Within this definition Sutherland places a significant amount of emphasis on a few key words. The first key word is of high social status, which excludes those individuals who are of middle class and lower echelons. Secondly, the deception must occur within the business setting. White collar crime has a damaging impact on the social morale because it causes individuals to lose trust in financial institutions, which sends negative images to the middle and lower class. Without the use of investing, it creates a hindrance to the growth of the economy. Moreover, many of those victimized do not know they were taken advantage of, and can those their life savings due to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The map is drawn with an internal circular frame that simulates the effect of a magnifying class, as if pulling the locations (which are likely truly separated by several miles) that much closer together. The text box overlaying this image, resting inside the scope of the magnifying glass, informs the reader that this impression of proximity is simultaneously misleading, and accurate. So far, we have only seen it as misleading. However, if we compare the image produced by this map to the very next panel, we see an image that zooms in even closer and demonstrates how reluctant his family is to stray from their small town. New meaning is found in the map as Alison draws parallels between the maps of both her home landscape and the setting of the children s novels. The image of Mr. Toad, perhaps still with the thought of Bruce linked to him, speeding towards the edge of the map in still life, also functions as a metaphor for her father s existence as he too became disenchanted (147). Three people were killed in a car crash on a highway that summer, the same highway her father would die on nine years later, and the impact of this event clearly has an influenced the way Alison processed the information. Though this is how many people know them, this is not all the thoroughbred can do. This is an amazing breed that is known to be able to do many different things. Thoroughbreds also have a unique style of how they are built and how they (Blocksdorf n.p.). Dressage is when the horse and rider do patterns in an arena and the rider is able to make the horse look like it is dancing. It is prudent for us whenever we feel our minds affected with a spiritual palsy, to apply immediately, like the faithful Centurion, to our God and Saviour for his healing virtue, and to apply to him with that living faith in His Diviine Omnipotence, for which the Centurion was so eminently distinguished. Jesus Cleanses a Leper (Matthew 8: v. 1 5): When he came down from the mountain, great crowds followed Him. And behold, a Leper came to Him and knelt before Him, saying Lord, if you will, you can make me clean. And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him saying, I will, be clean. Leprosy like all other bodily diseases was prevalent at the time. It was a representative figure of the spiritual disease called profanation of good and of truth which prevailed in the Jewish church at that time. • 14. Literature Review On Visual Art Education This literature review is concerned with the effective and engaging way to deliver visual art lesson to students. This is a significant educational topic because research suggests that students engagement in the classroom has been distinguished as the important indicator for students academic success (Harbour, Evanovich, Sweigart, Hughes, 2015). Errey and Wood (2011) also suggest that the higher the level of students engagement will result in a better learning outcome. However, many students have fallen in the category of disengage during their classroom practice, which also includes art classroom. The existing literature on visual art education proven that many students in art classroom claimed that they were bored and showed resistance in their art classes (Pennisi, 2013), they were also not as enthusiastic about their art project as the teacher (Andrews, 2010). So, the purpose of this literature review is to discuss several approaches for teachers to effectively deliver art education in the classroom. The existing literature on visual art education proven that there is little evidence of how teaching practice happens in the classroom (Mitchell, 2016). Mitchell (2016) also argues that although there are several types of research that provide the important information on the foundation of art educations, there is barely any information that proves how learning effectively occurs in the art education. This approach might include building a positive relationship (Keeffe, Lovejoy, Spenser Jones, Prain, 2013), the usage of technology in the classroom (Patton Buffington, 2016), applying student centered learning (Andrews, 2010). Student centered Learning It has been discussed that teacher needs to move away from teacher centered learning and using student centered learning instead. In this way, instead of being the commander in the classroom, teacher act as the facilitator and the guide for students, in which helping students in reaching their desired art projects. It is also necessary for visual art classroom to provide a condition where different students develop their own potential abilities (Tomljenovic, 2015). It can be seen that in this society blood and violence act as the undoing of psyches and produce anarchy. Blood is and always will be the plight of man. In William Shakespeare s Macbeth, blood imagery acts as the driving force of character development and collapse of their morality. It is primarily used the frame the evolution of psychological insanity in Macbeth through continuous murder and lunacy in Lady Macbeth with overwhelming guilt. The undoing of Macbeth s psychological stability can be seen early on in the play. Macbeth is originally described to the audience as noble, loyal and valiant so even the idea of murdering his beloved king defies his entire moral code. This in turn causes him to hallucinate stating Is this a dagger which I see before me... • 16. Analysis Of The Poem Upon The Burning Of Our House Since its early days, America has had strong core values based in Christian theology, European traditions, and Western ideals and morals. The Christian religion (and its many varying tendrils) has helped unify our nation for centuries. The founders of what is today the United States of America came over to this continent avoiding persecution for their religion from European powers. While there have been plethora wars and struggles across Europe over religion, thankfully they have never showed their face in America, although it is most certainly a part of our heritage. However, it can not be said that Christianity is the only influence that has been exerted on the American culture. Pagan and secular traditions and superstitions have been passed from ancient Greece to ancient Rome, then from the wreckage of those empires in Europe, and carried on all the way through the Dark Ages to 1600 s pilgrims who carried their culture to a new continent: North America. A remarkably early American poet was Anne Bradstreet, who wrote the poem Upon the Burning of Our House, which is a tribute to God. The most important and obvious value that Bradstreet emphasizes in her poem is her devotion to God. Throughout this poem she mentions him seven times as being her support and lord. In the second stanza she prays that god will strengthen me in my distress. This demonstrates to us that she trusts God to take care of her, despite the extreme traumatic experience she just endured. Fetal Pig And The Human Being s Anatomy Hypothesis Due to the fact that the fetal pig and the human being s anatomy are extremely similar, with the exception of a few minor parts, the fetal pig will be a precise tool in learning about the anatomy of a human. Due to a lack of money, resources, and access, UConn cannot provide the use of a human cadaver for educational purposes. Since we lack actual human specimens, the next best thing is the fetal pig. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Lombard, Terry, Malinoski, 2017) Discussion My hypothesis was correct in addressing how similar the fetal pig and human anatomy are, and how it helps to learn more about a human. One way in which the fetal pig is particularly similar to a human is its lungs. The fetal pig s lungs are almost identical to that of a human. They exchange oxygen for CO2, are located in the same place, and are also multi lobed. Another similarity is the pig s pericardium. The pericardium is a clear membrane that surrounds the heart, it is composed of an outer fibrous layer and an inner double layer of serous membrane. Its main purpose is the give the heart protection against infection and bacteria, and it provides lubrication as well. Every human has their heart surrounded by this, and so does a fetal pig. When dissecting, the dissector must make a light incision and remove the pericardium so the heart can be accessed. Although there are many similarities between the fetal pig and a human, there are also differences. The first difference resides in the liver. A normal human liver has four lobes: right, left, caudate, and quadrate. While a normal pig liver has five lobes: right lateral, right central, left central, left lateral, and caudate. Another main difference is that a fetal pig s colon is a spiral shape. A human s colon is shaped in a sigmoidal pattern instead ( Human/Pig Comparisons , 2004, September, goshen.edu). ... • 25. The Uses Of Tissue And Skin The use of fibroblasts in skin substitutes is a crucial step toward better burn wound healing. Fibroblasts, which are naturally found in the dermis layer, are in charge of synthesizing and secreting the components that make up the extracellular matrix. In order for the skin to heal properly, one component that is especially important is collagen, for it plays a major part in the structure of the skin. Lack of collagen synthesis during healing can lead to raised scar, resulting in poor skin function and appearance[18]. TransCyte is a temporary, bioactive synthetic covering with a similar structure to Biobrane, with an addition of fibroblasts. Like Biobrane, it is also used as covering for burn patients before autografting or for patients with partial thickness burns who do not require autografts[11][12]. TransCyte consists of two layers, a silicone outer layer and an inner nylon mesh seeded with fibroblasts. The outer silicone layer is a semipermeable membrane, containing a series of laser punched holes that allow excess fluids to be drained[13]. The inner nylon mesh membrane is coated with porcine collagen peptides, creating the base onto where the neonatal fibroblasts can be cultured, since collagen is a main component of the skin. In order to seed the fibroblasts within the nylon mesh, the entire membrane, silicone outer layer included, was placed inside a specially designed bioreactor. This bioreactor provided a continuous, constant flow of fibroblasts at a rate of about ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

From sports to taxes, cheating has the new norm in our lives. People who are good at cheating gain prestige and respect for working smarter, not harder, but that is immoral and a fallacy. Cheaters devalue the efforts of those who came before and those who will follow them in any particular field. This willingness to cheat reverberates through most sports. My goal, as an athlete, is to be a paragon of good sportsmanship and not cheat. To win through hard work and effort without cheating is the most important moral principle in my life. Running is my sport of choice and the focus of many elements in my life. There are ample opportunities to cheat in a running event. You can use chemical enhancers such as amphetamines or steroids. • 28. The Exorcist Defines the Horror Genre Essay The horror genre has held a prominent position in culture for most of history. Beginning in folklore, used as a device to scare children into good behaviors (e.g. The Grimm Brother s Fairy Tales), horror has integrated its way into the 21st century through film, and in recent years even video games. Yearly, primarily during the fall when the leaves start to brown and the natural eerie sense of fear fills the air around Halloween, the film industry likes to fill in the holes between its major grossing seasons by filling the audience with fear. However, it was Christmas of 1973 that defined the new age of Horror, when William Friedkin released The Exorcist. In any genre, the correct note at the exact, pivotal moment can leave a member of the audience in tears, bliss, or suspense. Contrary to Julia Heimdinger s opinion, however, the lack of non digetic sound tends to be very important to the horror genre. This is because it allows you to experience the genuine fear that the protagonist is feeling. You can hear their frantic breath, or the creaking of floor boards, or even the rustling of leaves. This suspends the audience into a very realistic moment of suspence and fear. According to Clifford G. Schuette of Kansas State University: when sound is taken out of the equation, one s attention to detail and focus vastly increases (Schuette 13). Once the soundtrack is removed and only digetic sound remains, the viewer may become more involved and invested in the scene. This will ultimately create a more intense emotional reaction when the scene s suspense and tension culminate into the climatic scare. Special effects are another very important tool in defining the horror genre. In the years leading up to the 1970s, special effects were almost non existent, or minimal at best, in the film industry. It wasn t until The Exorcist was released in 1973 that movie goers were hit with believable special effects that would have been thought impossible a mere half decade before. • 31. An Interpretation of Graham Greene s The Quiet American Judging Pyle One of the central themes in Graham Greene s novel, The Quiet American, which functions more as the thesis of this work of literature, is loss of innocence. Most critics and readers of this book generally conclude that the loss of innocence is exemplified through the gradual debauchery of Alden Pyle, the American who comes to live in Vietnam with little first hand experience or knowledge about the political situation or the people there. One of the principle problems with this commonly held view of interpretation, however, is that despite how innocuous a background Pyle may have had when he was in America, his actions in Vietnam are far from innocent. He steals the lover of his friend; he kills scores of innocent women and children by bombing a very public place at an hour when it is highly populated. These actions seem more befitting of a quintessential villain rather than that of an innocent man which poses a significant problem to this traditional interpretation that Greene s novel is about the loss of innocence of Pyle. However, when one examines the circumstances as well as the intentions of Pyle throughout much of his involvement in this novel which is fairly substantial it becomes clearer that for the most part the young man actually is well intentioned, and perhaps even a victim of circumstance: something that happens to the innocent.
