Summary Of Kitchen By Banana Yoshimoto
In the novel Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto, Yoshimoto demonstrates that family is important when
coping with the difficulties of life. Yoshimoto shows this through the usage of the contrast of light
and dark, and the motifs of the kitchen, and food. One motif that used is food, which is used to
represent the presence of family, and how that aides coping. Yoshimoto uses the motif of the kitchen
to represent the ability of the family to help another family member cope. Yoshimoto uses the
contrast of lightand dark to show that as the characters shift from feeling grief to joy, people who
can be considered family are involved. Yoshimoto uses the motifs of food and the kitchen along
with the contrast between dark and light to show that family is important when coping with the
troubles of life.
Yoshimoto uses the motif of food to show that family can help cope with life s troubles. One
example of food representing family helping to cope, is when Mikage creates an international
hodge podge (Yoshimoto 62) for Yuichi after the death of Eriko. Before Mikage re entering Yuichi
s life, Yuichi has been drinking for a month (Yoshimoto, 63) which can be associated with the lots
of instant dinners: a clear indication of his recent eating habits (Yoshimoto, 60). Yuichi s terrible
life style can be associated with the instant dinners that are cheap and poorly made. However, after
Mikage re enters his life and cooks an international hodge podge (Yoshimoto, 62), that takes two
hours

the ring critique Essay
The movie The Ring was a horror film that I found to be a major disappointment. The opening
scene is probably one of the best in the whole movie, which in my opinion is pathetic. When the
young girl in the beginning was killed seven days after watching the tape because her heart stopped
after seeing Samara, I thoughtto myself Wow, this may turn out to be an interesting movie, but
they ruined it as soon as they showed the girl dead in the closet looking green and disfigured. I
don t know where the directors are from, but in the real world, people don t turn green and look
disfigured when their hearts stop. The movie continues with the girl s crazy aunt trying to solve the
mystery of the videotape that could have been easily solved... Show more content on

She became horrified and realized she, too, only now had seven days to discover the truth about
the tape before being killed herself. Rachel and her son Aidan get caught right in the middle of this
twisted plot when Samara comes after them, and it s up to Rachel and her ex husband Noah to save
them all.
I didn t like how this tape was the reason people were dying because it is so unrealistic, which
made it hard for me to be scared or entertained by the plot at all. I also think that the movie went
way to far in depth on such a narrow topic. This movie could have easily been shortened, which
could have made it much more interesting and exhilarating. The opening scene where the girl
slowly went towards the bathroom as the water slowly trickled out towards her foot and grabbed
for the door handle was very suspenseful, but this was ruined because at this point your imagination
was running wild wondering what was going to happen, then BAM! you see pretty much nothing
and you are left wondering.
There were a few highlights with this movie though; it wasn t a complete waste of eight dollars.
The special effects during the movie were really good, especially when Samara came out of the
television at the end of the movie. I also thought the little boy, Aidan, was a good actor, which
helped keep me semi interested in

What Was Hatcher s Method Of Acceptance
Hatcher s acceptance was not valid because he sent a letter as acceptance when the offer was
sent by e mail. Although Simons did not expressly state what the method of acceptance should
be, the use of e mail implied e mail was the method of acceptance. As such since Hatcher used a
different, slower method, it was not valid upon being sent. No, it could not be taken as a valid
contract since the offer was made in a manner that was clearly made out of frustration and was not
meant to be a serious offer. Kennedy could not collect the reward since Kennedy already turned in
the watch without knowledge of the offer. Lodge does not have to give Kennedy the reward, since
Kennedy did not mention wanting the reward. Kubach was incorrect because by changing her
terms for accepting the position, she did not follow the mirror image rule of acceptance and thus
she did not actually agree to the offer. What she actually did by suggesting the bonus was create a
counteroffer.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

by concealing the fact that he did not order a new driveway, in an attempt to gain from Frazetta s

of since Noble did not specify. Yardley made a unilateral mistake, which cannot be used to get out
of a contract. Noble did not intentionally misrepresent the desk since all he said was that it was a

The Film Atonement By Ian Mcewan
The 2007 film Atonement was based on Ian McEwan s original novel which he published in 2001
with the same title. The film was directed by British director Joe Wright and stars actor/ actresses
James McAvoy, Keira Knightley, and Saoirse Ronan in this romantic war drama. Filming was done
in locations throughout Great Britain, which is where most of the films setup takes place. The film
was was nominated for seven Academy Awards and walked away with Best Original Score.
Atonementbegins in the Tallis family mansion, located in England in the year 1935. Briony

intends to premier for her brother Leon Tallis arrival back home that evening. Her sister Cecilia
is later seen through the window by the fountain with the cleaning lady s son, Robbie Turner.
Robbie has just caused Cecilia to break a family heirloom. Cecilia and Robbie have been
childhood friends, and now they are intertwined in a complicated series of sexual advancements
in their relationship. Aside from this, relatives of the Tallis family have also arrived to the home;
twins Jackson and Pierrot and their older sister Lola Quincey. Paul Marshall, a wealthy chocolatier
and friend of Leon, also arrives for dinner that night. He displays predatory actions towards Lola, a
fifteen year old girl, the moment they meet. As family and friends prepare themselves for dinner,

Easter Jeep Safari Project Observation Report
If I was given the opportunity to have $10,000,000 to work on any project that I would like I
would start an organization that deals with multi use public lands. I will start by giving some
background on why this issue is so important to me, the benefits it has for these towns that are
closely located to the area in question, and finally what this would do for generations to come.
Since being a young kid till now I ve spent many of our vacations in Moab, Utah. Moab is
notoriously known for its red rocks, hiking, mountain biking, and avid off road communities. My
family and friends fall into the last one; we have been building and modifying Jeeps to be able to

I believe many of these areas need to be preserved for many generations to come. It would be a
terrible thing when something as iconic as the Delicate Arch was destroyed. These are the
things that we need to preserve for everyone to enjoy and establishing National Parks have been
useful. On the other side, much of this land is enjoyed by people who are active in motor sports,
mountain biking, and others recreational activities that may have some impact on the
environment. These places are where I grew to truly understand the beauty of our world, met
many people with the same interest as I have, become closer as family and friends. All these
things have created such a strong bond with me and the outdoors that it has actually led me to be
more responsible for our world, things like cleaning up others trash just so that we don t get a bad
reputation so that we can preserve what we love to do. I think letting people of future generations
to go through the same bond and understanding that we need to make an effort to preserve our
lands while still being able to use them for our personal recreation, whatever that might

Play is a source of significant theoretical insights in anthropology and in other disciplines (Huizinga
1970; Turner 1982). Feminist research is explicitly directed towards identifying, understanding and
changing social factors affecting women. Women s participation in sports is a feminist issue
deserving of research and theory development Harrison and Fahy (2005:702). Many scholars in the
study of sociologyof sports use feminist theoryto understand power and genderrelations in the

Habitus Bourdieu described habitus as embodied cultural capital that a person expresses in the
form of skills and habits an unconscious disposition the person accumulates overtime.
Socialization is one of the ways that an embodied cultural capital is attached to the body
(Bourdieu 1977:72 95) Wacquant (2004:16) demonstrates habitus by describing the body as a
seat, the instrument and the target. Before one attempts to partake in sports it is important for
one to build body capital, gaining habitus is a sign of readiness to participate in sports
(Wacquant 2004:127). In Wacquant s (2004:16) view, one needs to acquire a set of bodily and
mental schemata and also to construct the theory of practice to effectively participate in sports
(Bourdieu, 1997). Borrowing from this approach, I will seek to understand and describe my lived
experience through active participation in sports. In this regard, my research will follow the
dictates of Mauss, (1979) that, to attain a disposition to do sports as in the case of any other
technique of the body, the work done by the individual will be for practical collective

The Feminist Short Story Of The Great Beacons
My dear reader, you live in a universe that is replete with adventures of the unknown, mysteries
of the forgotten and falsehoods of the truth. Yet, those are all lesser tales which shall remain
untold for now. The story in which you are about to delve into is far grander than any of the
former. It is possibly the truest legend that I have collected. It has taken me several years to find
each piece in this intricate tale. I had to venture to the very darkest corners if this world, which,
mind you, are difficult to find and flagitious creatures dwell within. Other parts of the story,
however, were easy to come across, and the furthest I had to go was to the ancient maple tree at the
end of the lane. I realize that you may be curious of my identity,... Show more content on

It smelled like human waste and rotten flesh. There were stains of dried blood on nearly every
surface, and most appalling, on a pair of shackles, somewhat hidden in the corner by a frail,
broken body. Her frame was naturally petite, but now she was all sallow skin and protruding
bones. She probably weighed about fifty pounds. Her skin was pallid, and nearly translucent.
Her face was gaunt, and her once exquisite ebony locks were colorless from malnutrition. The
only evidence that she was indeed alive, were her vitreous gasps for breath, and her large grey
eyes. Her eyes were filled with a terror I can scarce describe. Aside from the terror, deep in her
eyes was also a great suffering, one that only intensified when she saw the bars of her cell clang
open. Her name was Violet, quite fittingly, for she was as delicate as her namesake, both in
appearance, and temperament. She had been detained for nearly a full pass of the moon, facing
abhorrent treatment. She had been starved, tortured, violated, and ridiculed by an all but venomous
mob of piss drunk men. The same men who had once protected her, even befriended her. Betrayal,
that devastating mistress, was her only friend now. The looming sentence, unjust and morbid as it

Scrubs In My Old Lady
The early 2000s was a prime time for hospital centered television shows were aired. House and
Grey s Anatomy were among the most popular, but Scrubs stood among the best of the genre.
While the other shows were drama focused, Scrubs took a more lighthearted approach to working at
a hospital, though the show often takes on dark thematics from time to time. Scrubsis the best
hospital televisionshow to have been aired because of the scenes that reflected the reality of
hospitals, the soundtrack, and the genius improve the cast used to liven up scenes. In the fourth
episode of the series, My Old Lady , the main character, JD, is told by his patient who is an old
woman, that she is ready to die. In that moment, it shook me that while it is a doctor s duty to
save a patient, the patient wants to be let go sometimes. JD spends the rest of the episode working
off the clock to change her mind, but she she doesn t change her mind. Knowing that doctors really
care about their patients really assures the viewers that they are in good hand when... Show more

The motions and emotions of the cast feel more realistic due to the fact that there are no pauses
for imaginary laughter and allows music to have more emphasis on the tone of the current
scene. When the old woman died, a cover of Hallelujah started to play, which is already a
somber song about love. This show also introduced viewers to new artists. A band that makes a
recurring appearance is, The Blanks. This band does acapella, acoustic, or unplugged covers of
songs that I like, most noteworthy was and acoustic cover of, Hey Ya, by Outkast, along with
original content. A creative way for the incorporation of this band was that they made cameos as a
group of hospital staff that have an acapella band doing covers of slogans or cartoon theme songs.
It is charming whenever they appear, showing off their talents in ways a viewer would not

Summary Of Alistair Macleod s The Boat
The Dilemma Between Tradition and Opportunity Through the angle in the screen door I saw
my father who had been walking into his room wheel around on one of his rubber booted heels
and look at her with his blue eyes flashing like clearest ice beneath the snow that was his hair. His
usually ruddy face was drawn and grey, reflecting the exhaustion of a man of sixty five who had
been working in those rubber boots for eleven hours on an August day, and for a fleeting moment I
wondered what I would do if he killed my motherwhile I stood there in the porch with those three
foolish mackerel in my hand. Then he turned and went into his room and the radio blared forth the
next day s weather forecast and I retreated under the noise and returned again,... Show more content

When Macleod talks about the father s blue eyes flashing like clearest ice beneath the snow that
was his hair (228) the reader has a picture painted in their mind. This sentence uses imagery to
put emphasis behind the glare of the father s eyes. The word ice also has a second effect as it
can refer to the cold heartedness and fuming temper of the father in the passage. Imagery
continues to be used by Macleod as he continues on the reader is told that the father s usually
ruddy face was drawn and grey (228). The father s face was mentioned on a few occasions
throughout the story as the reader hears mention of his sunburnt face (230) just a couple pages
later on. The reiteration of a small detail like this brings emphasis back to the original passage.
In order for his face to look drawn and grey circumstances must be dire. Imagery is in many forms
of writing and when used correctly, as in this passage, it elevates the writing and draws emphasis
to specific parts of the story that could be easily missed without it. Imagery clearly shows the tense
manner of this

alter a person s blood sugar levels and insulin levels. At the same time, one finding cannot simply
be applied to all individuals as every person is different. I believe that this article could be
especially important to those who suffer with acne vulgaris as it would help give them a better
understanding of the effects some foods may have on the. Acne does not only have an effect
physically on individuals, but it also affects them emotionally. There are many treatment options
for people with acne ranging from very basic over the counter topical treatments to more invasive
and intense treatments such as Isotretinoin. Along with medications that can be prescribed, the
first thing that any one person can do to help possibly reduce their acne is change their diet, or
avoid foods that would increase their likelihood of an increased breakout. There is much research
going into whether diet truly does have an effect, but more and more information is being
collected to support this hypothesis. I do not believe that food causes acne vulgaris; however, I
strongly believe that it can worsen the effects of already existent acne by such ways as increasing
oil production of sebaceous glands in our

American realized they should learn the Japanese economy model of high levels of coordination

Persuasive Essay On Save Animals
Animals are the beginning to the best nerve wrecking filled love you could ever dream of for
your life. Ever since I was a young child, I ve always resonated with the idea of helping animals
more so than anyone and anything else in this world. My love for animals had begun when I was
a mere four years old. I ve always had pets: dogs, cats, hamsters, guinea pigs, and much more. To
find out more about how to help adoptable animals in shelters, I contacted Amanda Smasal, a
community outreach coordinator at Wayside Waifs. Wayside Waifs is no kill shelter
located in
Kansas City, Missouri which has adoptable dogs and cats, ready and willing to go to safe, loving
homes. When I first emailed Smasal asking if she would participate in the interview, I felt
overwhelming fear and began to panic about the whole encounter. The fear of having to ask
someone I had never met to talk with me is something that scares me. Nonetheless, I sent the
email asking politely yet efficiently to see if she would give me a few of her precious minutes
to answer questions about a cause worth fighting for: animal rescue hospitals. She quickly
responded to my quaint email approximately a day later stating she would happily answer any
and all questions I have, significant or insignificant. The questions took a couple days to figure
out. The few days I had to create the questions were filled with creativity and a tad bit of
questionable ideas. The questions I asked her were the things I would want to

My Firm s Services Regarding Proper Accounting Practices...
It has come to my understanding that you requested my firm s services regarding proper
accounting practices for the acquisition of long term debentures. Therefore, I write to you this
memo to address some issues you might be having with your newly obtained debt and to explain
how to properly amortize it. I have been informed that you already have an accounting expert that
advised you to use the Straight Line method of amortization for the discount on the bond. My
expertise lies on the Effective Interest method of amortization. 1.Determining Bond Price To
determine the price of the bond, the face value of the bond must be brought to its present value.
The rationale behind this comes from an investment principle that considers that the money given
up in the present could yield a gain in the long term if used as an investment. To arrive to the
present value, we use a market rate that represents the yield the average investor would require to
spend money in a new venture (in this particular case, 11%). Therefore, even though the Bond s
face value might be $1,000,000, your company is expected to get $924,623.74. The difference
between this two numbers, $75,376.26, is considered a discount that you allow for offering a rate
that is lower than the rate requested by the investors (in this case, 9%). 2.Amortization of Discount I
took the liberty of creating an amortization schedule to help you visualize the immediate difference
between straight line and effective interest methods

Dealing In The Poem By W. H. Auden
The Poem was written by W.H Auden and was written in 1936.
The title in itself has many connotations of sadness. The word Funeral is associated with someone
dying. The word blues on the other hand is a type of Jazz that often conveys sadness. By combining
the two, we can see that the author has cleverly manipulated the title into conveying sadness.
The poem opens energetically, with an intensely emphasized verb Stop, a start that also suggests an
ending. Certainly, much of the rest of the poem is similarly constructed on heavily accentuated
verbs of command. The attitude of the poem is highly imperative. The poet gives out orders, but the
instructions he issues suggest that he cannot believe that the death of the certain person has
happened. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Death severs this connection, creating a shift in how life is perceived. The strength of this is in
contrast with the images of death, the funeral preparations, and how society thinks of mourning that
are in the previous stanzas. The last line of the third stanza and the fourth stanza speak to the
perpetual sense of loss that death has on the plane of living.
In the fourth stanza the poet s agony rings out even more passionately. Here he stresses that
Nature notice his grief, calling it to extinguish the stars and the moon and the sun and get rid of
the ocean. He desires the world to reflect the emptiness within him left by death. Human
monuments to the dead will not be adequate at best. There is no optimism at the end of the poem;
the reader is left with the very real and very hostile sense of the man s grief, since no end can be
accomplished without the poet s

The Political Landscape Of Colombia
Colombia is located in the northwest of South America. The current population is estimated to be
in the region of 46.73 million with the capital city Bogota being the most populated. The labour
force is estimated to be 24.34 million. Colombia s major resources are oil and coal. The country
operates in a representative democracy which attempts to empower the masses. Juan Manuel Santos
Calderon is the president; he is currently serving his last term in office
Colombia is dominated by two political parties, Social National Unity Party and the opposition,
Democratic Center Party led by former president, Alvaro Uribe. In recent times the political
landscape of Colombia has changed, political stability is now the order of the day. The freedom of
expression is evident in policy debates where the opposition has been very critical of the policy of
the current administration. Voter turnout for the last presidential was 47% of the voting population,
this could be due to the high level of poverty in the country. The major political change in recent
history has been the reinstatement of a one term policy limit for the president from 2018 onwards.
This constitutional change makes Colombia less stable country. The change will introduce policy
and regulatory uncertainty which could be detrimental to future growth as future presidents are
more likely to be myopic in their policy decisions.
Colombia currently has the potential for population growth in the future due to the youth

Summary Of The Song Changes By Charles Bradley
Changes by Charles Bradley is a song that resonates with me as a song that triggers an emotional
response. The song was first released in 2013 and is a cover of the 1972 band Black Sabbath
(Cory, 2017). It is apparent by the title that the topic for the song is the changes that the artist is
going through or has gone through in his life. At the very beginning of the song, Bradley says
She was my woman. I loved her so. But it s too late now. I ve let her go... But soon the world. Had
its evil way , which illustrates the loss of a partner but is still ambiguous in how he lost her but
one can infer it was due to death (Cory, 2017). Now, any time a song refers to the death of a loved
one, it is easy to sympathize with because we have all lost... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

When I first heard the song, I immediately searched for it on the internet and listened to the
whole version because I thought it was such a powerful song. The lyrics of the song tell a story,
it is one of pain and sorrow, but it s a story that I think everyone can relate to. The lyrics are very
simple and they all come together to form a detailed depiction of Bradley s emotions. When I
hear Bradley sing about his loss, it triggers me into thinking about the loved ones that I have lost.
The rhythm of the song is very slow pace and calm, which sets the mood for Bradley s gritty deep
voice, but when the chorus hits, then the saxophone jumps in to excite the whole song. The beat is
soft enough to induce a deep thought and when the chorus hits, you do not get the usual sense of
excitement but rather one of contempt delight. Lastly, the artist is another thing that triggers a
Dionysian response for me, the reason being that Bradley looks just like my grandfather that
passed about a year ago. Every time I see Bradley, I think of my grandfather and all of the time I
spent with him, not to mention that the author s last name matches that of my family. Overall, I
would say that the emotional response that I get when I hear this song is one of blissfulness and

Elizabeth Barrett Browning Essay
Elizabeth Barrett Browning
Elizabeth Barrett Browning was born in 1806 in County Durham, England. She was the eldest of
twelve children born to Edward Barrett Moulin Barrett and Mary Graham Clarke. Elizabeth
Barrett Browning, or Ba , grew up in her family s estate Hope End, Henfordshire. They were part of

Elizabeth began writing at a very early age. When she was twelve her father had her first epic

Elizabeth suffered from many illnesses at this time. In 1838 her Uncle Samuel Barrett died and left
her an inheritance substantial enough to provide her with living expenses. The following year her
favorite brother Samuel nicknamed Bro , drowned. Elizabeth became depressed for some time.
The 1840s saw many famous works produced by Elizabeth. Some of these include The Cry of
the Children , De Profoundest and The Dead Pan . She also published Poems. Poems contained
tributes to famous poets Elizabeth revered such as Robert Browning and Henry Wordsworth. In
1845 Elizabeth received her first letter from Robert Browning. He wrote in praise of her poetry.
They corresponded for several months, marrying in 1846. Their marriage was not welcome by her
father. Her relationship with him was never the same. The couple made their home in Florence,
Italy. In Italy, Elizabeth became interested in the country s politics. She hoped the country would
unify. She expressed this feeling in her Poems before Congress , published in 1860 (25).
In 1849, the Browning s welcomed their first and only child, Robert Wiedmeman Barrett

most famous work. The sonnets were a sequence of 44 sonnets recording the growth of her love

Community Journalism as a Synonym for Small Town Newspapers
Literature Review:
The notion of community journalism is hardly a new one. However, during the past decade, the
concept gained much fascination and interest among industry analysts.
The literature available on the topic points out that the reason behind this strong comeback of
community journalism lies in the fact that most regions where the boom is taking place are
undergoing a transitional phase that paved the way for this shift. The literature, however, refers to
two trends in this matter: the first is the effect of economic transition on the reemergence of
community journalism in countries such as the US and the UK, the second is the effect of political
transition on the emergence of community journalism in countries such as South Africa. In other
words, while the former example shows a rebirth of an old notion as a result of economic decline,
the latter shows an adoption of the concept in the hope of facilitating political transition.
Concerning the effect of economic transition, one theory is that the diminishing influence of larger
newspapers (in the US and the UK) and the decline in number of their circulation allowed localized
news outlets to flourish and become more prominent (Conhaim, 2006).
During these times of financial troubles, local publications had the power to remain profitable by
focusing on small target audiences, and offer unique, concentrated, localized content as their niche
product. So in addition to succeeding in gaining financial prosperity,

The Problems Of Obedience And Authority

The Problems of Obedience to Authority
People will do about anything to stay out of trouble when it comes to someone with authority that
cannot be argued with. Stanley Milgram did an experiment on the topic of obedience to authority;
he wanted to know how ordinary people could do horrible things if forced to by someone of
authority. Obedience to authority is instinctual for human beings, there has and will always be
someone with a higher authority than ourselves. How can normal, ordinary people that think of
themselves or are thought of as genuinely good people do things that they know is morally wrong
when told to do so by someone of authority? That is the question that Milgram asked himself when
he started his experiments.
The main point of the experiment was to test why people listen and act on what people of
authority tell them to do. Milgram took ordinary people and proved that most of the general
populace is willing to physically hurt another human being if provoked by someone in a position of
authority. This causes a person to question as Encina does, Why were those who challenged
authority in the minority? So entrenched is obedience it may void personal codes of conduct
(Encina).
In the experiment Milgram picked people off of the streets and tested them on how far they would
go to hurt someone when instructed to do so by someone of authority. Respondents were told that
the experiment would

their life expectancy shorter than other Americans. Males tend to live till the age of 48 and
females to the age of 52 which is not normal for Americans. Some of the factors that affect this life
expectancy are low income and their nutrition. Most Indians only make about $8,000 per years, that
is not even one third of what a normal American makes per year.

Kobe Bryant Greatest Player
Topic: Is Kobe the greatest basketball player in 21st century?
(word counts: 981)
Few months before, Kobe Bryant who is probably the most controversial player ended his 20 year
basketball career. Experts made their comments about him which led to a dispute about whether he
is the greatest player in 21st century. As a limitation, the players in 21st century means the players
who spent most of his career in 21st century, which put Michael Jordan out of consideration. Hence,
the range of the choices could be probably narrowed to three players: Tim Duncan, Lebron James
and Kobe Bryant. Moreover, according to Dan Harriman, a professional writer mentioned, a great
player is the one has his contribution on and off the court, which is also the reason Michael Jordon
is generally considered as the greatest player ever (in 20th century? Better to mention). Namely, the
greatest player is determined by both the achievements inside the court and the impact outside the
court as a public character. As a result, it can be... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

made 23 Game Winning shots (Abbott, 2011). It is not difficult to conclude that Kobe has the
dominance to determine the result of games, especially during the last few minutes. Therefore,
Michael Jordan, who has been called the god of basketball , claimed that he loved watching Kobe

making his seventh grade basketball team. After weeks of hard practice, Greene anxiously waited
to see his name on the team list, only to discover he d been cut. Greene turned into a hard worker,
completing more assignments and working more hours than needed. At the age of 16, now

This past summer, one of my friends faced this. Rather than being cut, Abby made our travel
soccer team. However, a couple weeks later, Abby admitted she felt like she didn t belong, and
sitting the bench only made her depression issues worse. She quit. I reconnected with her months
later, and, surprisingly, Abby exclaimed that following her voluntary dismissal, she applied for
a job at a local animal shelter, and was in the process of striving to be accepted into vet school at
Purdue. She also included that she had lost fifteen pounds, and was staying on a healthy diet. I
worried Abby would spiral downhill after quitting, but I was wrong all along. She had turned her
situation into an opportunity to discover her future, and determined what her state of mind and
physicality would become. Both of these girls have shown that even though they weren t, or didn
t feel, good enough, they turned it into a chance to build themselves into stronger people, and be
satisfied with their personal achievements. When someone gets told they aren t good enough, or
sense they aren t, it can tear down whatever self esteem they had. The short story Cut shows the
pain of rejection that has never subsided in businessmen. I witnessed two positive people in my

looking back made these businessmen from Cut as well as my peers realize that being cut can

The Origins Of Jazz Music
Jazz origins within New Orleans and key musicians
The aim of this paper is to explore the origins of Jazz music, where it came from the key players
and it s lasting influence as one of the most celebrated and discussed musical idioms. The main
topics this paper will be covering how we how we got Jazz through western traditional music and
the improvisation and syncopation of the African American slaves, what is Ragtime and why is it
so influential, the early pioneers in Jazz such as Buddy Bolden, New Orleans African American
subcultures of canal street and why it was important to the development of Jazz and Jelly Roll
Morton s claim to be the inventor jazz.
Jazz as we know it to be originated from Africa brought over by black slaves who were treated with
great cruelty and used music as a method of consolidation. The music that was brought over with
the slaves inevitably ended up mixing with the popular American music of the time creating many
different genres including blues, ragtime and eventually jazz. Slaves would have been introduced to
typical American music by their masters which usually consisted of music such as Gospel music
which would have been very popular at the time [1]. This type of music and the traditional tribal
music that the slaves brought with them that makes use of the polyrhythms from the multiple drum
beats and chants come together to create a type of music which would have been like nothing ever
heard before at the time.

For example, there are moments throughout the novel in which the wind blows as Sethe is
thinking and she is brought back to her days at Sweet Home, seeing the beautiful trees that
surrounded the plantation. However, those were not nice moments to be reminded of as the
particular trees she remembers are the trees that hung her fellow companions on the plantation.
The story frames it as, Boys hanging from the most beautiful sycamores in the world. It shamed
her remembering the wonderful soughing trees rather than the boys (pg. 7). Thus, right off the
bat, Sethe has a clear relationship with nature but it is so two faced that it could be something
seen as a beautiful sight or a shocking reminder. Along with that, overall she has very bad
experiences at Sweet Home when it came to having her milk stolen and just being a slave in
general. But she is not able to control when those thoughts come to her as, her brain was
devious, (pg. 6), so any sight of a tree could provide her with a sudden wave of depression, much
different from what it would provide for the others. The inbetween of the positive and negative
association with trees and nature would come in the moment that Sethe is running away from
Sweet Home, going through the woods. Although that moment brought her freedom and a new
life bringing her choice and much more, the process of it all was insanely brutal. All throughout

Many questions posed by scientists about Saturn s atmosphere had gone unanswered for many
years, because, like with Jupiter, photos from Earth had not been of high enough quality. The
Voyager probes were able to fix that. Information relayed back to Earth from the two probes (which
reached Saturn nine months apart, Voyager 1 first in 1980, Voyager 2 in 1981) helped scientists get
a much better understanding. Though the atmosphere was expected to be quite similar in
composition to the Sun and to Jupiter, Saturn s atmosphere was actually quite different. There was
significantly less Helium in Saturn s outmost atmosphere, leading to many interesting conclusions,
including that heavier Helium was sinking lower in the atmosphere (Voyager Saturn, NASA).
Saturn was also determined to have a lighter density than any other planet and is, in fact, less dense
than water. The varying composition of the atmosphere also leant ideas to why Saturn was far
warmer than expected, calculating temperature based solely on solar energy, registering between
10 degrees Kelvin at the poles and 143 Kelvin closer to the equator, according to Voyager 1 s
radio measurements (these also measured pressure) (Voyager Saturn, NASA). One of the other
things determined by the Voyager probes was the extreme speed of the wind on Saturn. Wind
blows at speeds of about 500 meters per second near the equator (Voyager Saturn,

The, The House Slave, And Persephone, Falling By Rita Dove
Rita Dove, traversing historical, epic, tragic and lyrical poetry, blurs the lines of the concrete
cultural constructions of gender, sexuality, and ethnicity in her poems Capriccio , The House Slave
and Persephone, Falling to demonstrate the political involutions of both race and gender. By
utilizing extensive diction, striking symbolism, puissant imagery, classical allusions, and visceral
metaphors, she is able to show how although she distills the experiences of oppressed groups, she
conveys her thoughts on the failures of mother daughter relationships, the plight for racial equality,
and her deep vexation at the acknowledgement of race.
First, littered with visceral metaphors and classical allusions to show the complexities of
relationships especially the mother daughter relationship, is Dove s poem Persephone, Falling . In
Siting the Poet: Rita Dove s Refiguring of Traditions , Susan Van Dyne states that If the myth of
Demeter and Persephone promises that death is followed by regeneration, rupture of the mother
daughter bond by its recuperation, Dove s revision in Mother Love emphasizes a longing for what
is already lost as a permanent feature in the lives of both mother and daughter. In Persephone,
Falling the myth of Demeter and Persephone is used symbolically for mother daughter relationships
in general.

In every 45 seconds, someone is sexually violated in the United States. Out of every 6 women, one
has experienced an attempted rape or complete rape. Lesbians and bisexual women remain at
increased risk of sexual victimization compared to heterosexual women. In order for a woman to
determine the direction of her life, she must first determine her sexuality. Sexuality is a deep,
integral part of any human s life. This should not be a subject of coercion or debate. The society

If violence was to take place between two intimate women in a lesbian relationship, the violence
would seem to be nothing more than a cat fight. It would not be surprising for the majority to ask
what harm could really be done by two women. The violence that exists between women in a
lesbian relationship is in deliberate opposition to the traditional female/feminine gender role
stereotype deeply entrenched in the society. This stereotype combined with the belief that women
are naturally weak and lack stature and strength to inflict any serious harm to each other calls for
the dismissal of any serious violence between two intimate women (Walters, 2011). Currently, there
is a consensus in statistics regarding the rate of lesbian intimate partner violence. However, it is
thought that the occurrence of lesbian intimate partner violence is comparable to the heterosexual
domestic violence rates. Studies conducted in the past indicated that between 41 percent and 68
percent of all lesbians have at one point experienced some kind of abuse in the intimate
relationship in the hands of their partners. The studies estimate that 90 percent of lesbians

Q2. Explain the part played by external pressure in the fight against apartheid and minority rule in
South Africa.
From 1960 onwards, when Harold Macmillan made his change of winds speech, the world started
to place external pressures on South Africa, and this was one of the main causes of the end of
apartheid. Economic sanctions and sporting isolation were the two main subdivisions of external
pressure.
Sporting isolation made South Africa realise that the minority rule and the apartheid regime was
greatly frowned upon by the rest of the world, and caused many Afrikaners to change their attitude
to the way the country was being run; this was because they didn t want to be excluded from the
rest of the world s competitions and tournaments solely for their governments issues; it made the
Afrikaners feel guilty for the regime ruling South Africa. This attitude would eventually help in
ending the apartheid regime.
Economic sanctions, however, were much more effective in the ending of minority rule. Foreign
countries saw South Africa as a risky country to invest in because the sanctions against South Africa
withdrew loans in businesses; businessmen found it harder to have prosperous companies

How Foods Are Broken Down
How foods are broken down in the digestive system
CARBOHYDRATES:
Carbohydrates are broken down by an enzyme called carbohydras. A carbohydrate molecule is
made up of a chain of glucose molecules, (this is why they are eaten for energy). When they come
into contact with carbohydras they are broken down into individual glucose molecules.
Carbohydras is secreted in the mouth, pancreas, and small intestine. It starts to break down the
carbohydrates in our mouth and the carbohydras is in our saliva. There are two carbohydras s they
are; amylase which breaks down polysaccharides into disaccharides, and maltase which breaks
down disaccharides into monosaccharide molecules.

LIPIDS:
Lipids are broken down by an enzyme called lipase. Lipids are made up of 3 fatty acids and a
glycerol molecule. This means that when the lipids are broken down you get 2 distinct products.
The lipids will be broken down into the fatty acids and glycerol.
Lipase is secreted in the pancreas, and the small intestine walls. The liver will also help the process.

THE BODIES DEVELOPMENT TO ABSORB THESE NUTRIENTS:
Protein: the body has a limited amount of transporter cells so this limits the amount of protein (in
the form of amino acids) that can be absorbed into the body per hour. The rate of proteins absorbed
in an hour can vary, some are absorbed slowly and some are very fast. The movement of protein into
your stomach stimulates a hormone which delays the empting of the stomach, and means that
intestinal contractions are slower while the chyme is moving through the small intestine. This is
important as this is where the majority of absorption takes place so more protein and other
nutrients can be absorbed as they stay in our digestive system longer.

Personality Theories Essay over the movie Finding Nemo
The purpose of this essay is to watch the movie and try to view the main character from three
personality theorists perspectives. In the movie Finding Nemo, Marlin was a clown fish who lost
his son, Nemo, in the vast ocean. Along his journey to find his son, he ran into Dory, a blue tang fish
who suffered from short term memory loss. Dory provided moral support and comfort in this
search that Marlin has been missing for years. This essay will analyze Dory in the movie Finding
Nemo through Carl Rogers self actualization theory, Maslow s Hierarchy of needs, and Friedman

Maslow s Hierarchy of Needs
Maslow s hierarchy of needs is a systematic arrangement of needs according to priority in which
basic needs must be met before less basic needs are aroused. At the point in the movie where
Dory meets Marlin, Dory was stuck on the second level of Maslow s pyramid because she lacked
in needs of love and belongingness that is necessary to climb up higher on the hierarchy of needs.
When she is introduced in the movie, she had no love, no family, no self esteem, and was only
concerned about the basic needs in life like safety and security. At the point in the movie where

Friedman and Rosenman Behavior Type pattern
In Finding Nemo, Dory had a type B personality because she was normally very easy going and
relaxed. A type B personality is defined as a child ego state characterized by a form of behavior
associated by Friedman and Rosenman with people who appear free of hostility and aggression
and who lack a compulsion to meet deadlines, are not highly competitive at work and play, and
have a lower risk of heart attack (Farlex, 2012). In many parts of the movie, you could see

Examining Myself As A Writer
Examining yourself as a writer Writing has never been my strong suit, simply because I am not

a topic I love talking about. In those essays, I can write non stop, but as a college student, in my
experience, free write topics are rarely given, which brings a weak spot to me. If there is no free
write assignment, often times it is a topic I cannot relate to. I need to learn how to get out of my

summer. I wrote on the topic

Analysis Of Blood On The Forge By William Attaway
A Change of Culture Culture has the power of informing you of someone s identity. It is said that
culture is the way of life a group of people follow, meaning their behaviors, beliefs, values, and
symbols that identify them as where they came from, who they are, and who they can become. On
the other hand, we know that culture is always changing and adapting to the lifestyleand advances
of the present day. This can happen by the adaptation groups of people have suffered in order to
achieve a better way of living other than the one they ve previously had. Examples of these
changes can be seen with the Great Migration in the 1900s. A movement in which many African
Americans moved to the North to work and settle in the steel mills in search of a better life. In
Blood on the Forge by William Attaway, we are able to in fact prove that culture can change and
adaptation plays a key role in our existence. The book portrays this change through the life and
experiences of the Moss brothers and their lifestyle from Kentucky to Pennsylvania. With that of
culture comes our identity through music. The death of the blues serves as an example in how
culture is put up to the challenge of change. Melody, Chinatown, and Big Mat represent the loss of
folk culture which accompanied the Great Migration of Black people from the rural South to the
industrial North (Waldron 58). As we begin to read, we are able to interpret their lives and identity
in the South through Melody s music. This

The United States Incarceration System
The United States incarceration system is a structural foundation of punishment in which is formed
by robust authoritarian power. The United States criminal justice system is not an institution to be
underestimated, as it represents the highest incarceration rate of all world nations at a staggering
700 inmates per 100 thousand citizens (Krisberg, 7). Based on the social and political structure of
democracy in the United States, it is argued that incarceration systems should follow the same roots
of equality and freedom; however, the current format demonstrates otherwise. Currently, the United
States criminal justicesystem faces issues of inhumane treatment due to the sheer overcrowding,
which restrict inmates from just treatment within penitentiaries. This lack of equality standards was
argued in the 2011 court case, Brown v. Plata, which California prisonsystems were forced to
decrease prisons overcapacity rate from 175% to 137.5% due to the overwhelming amount of
inmate mistreatment (Koehler, 3). In the decision of Brown v. Plata (2011), supreme court justice
Anthony Kennedy argued dignity should be an organizing principle in the United States justice
system and demonstrated in all correctional facilities. Anthony Kennedy, along with guest lecturer,
Jonathan Simon characterize dignity as a fundamental piece to the incarceration system, and
without it, inmates are victimized to cruel and inhumane treatment. Dignity does not consist of
domination and unequal treatment of

John Harwood Hick ( 1922-2012 )
John Harwood Hick (1922 2012)
BIBLIOGRAPHY
John Harwood Hick was born on 20th January, 1922 to Aileen Hick and Mark Hick in
Scarborough, England. Hick s ancestors were owners of successful shipping firm. However, his
grandfather abandoned the shipping business to become an attorney. John Hick was arguably
among the most influential and important philosophers of religion of the 2nd half of the 20th
century. It is worth noting that as a British Philosophical thinker in the Anglo analytic tradition,
John Hick did ground breaking work in philosophical theology, religious pluralism and religious
epistemology (Hick and Sharma 89).
As a young student of law, John Hick went through a strong religious experience which led him to
accept the evangelical Christianity and to alter the direction of his career to philosophy and
theology. At the beginning of his career, john Hick argued that the Christian faith is mainly based
on religious experience rather than propositional evidence. Therefore, he defended Christianity faith
against criticisms by evidentialist, who were by then dominant logical positivists ( Professor John
Hick Telegraph ). The most influential works by John Hick include: Evil and the Godof Love; A
Christian Theology of Religions; An Interpretation of Religion; and many others

Chapter 15: Crucible of Freedom: Civil War, 1861 1865 Both North and South were ill prepared
for war in 1861. Initially dependent on volunteers, the Confederacy established a draft in 1862, and
the Union did so the following year. At first the South relied on imported arms and munitions but
soon was able to produce its own. It had more trouble with clothing and food throughout the
duration of the war. Financing the war was also a problem. Americans had been unaccustomed to
paying taxes to the national government, but both sides had to end the tradition of hard money and
minimal government by raising taxes, issuing war bonds, and printing paper money. Inflation was
serious in the North and devastating in the South by 1865. The... Show more content on

In the Sea Islands, black refugees took advantage of temporary reallocation of former plantation
lands to form their own communities. By 1863 both sides were experiencing labor shortages,
inflation, and dissension. With its superior resources, the Union met the challenge more
effectively. Although the cotton textile industry in the North was hurt, industries directly
related to the war effort arms manufacture, ready made clothing, and railroads flourished. The
Republicans in Congress were able to act on their idea of free soil, free labor, free men and
passed the Homestead Act and the Morrill Land Grant Act. Nevertheless, workers suffered during
the war as wages lagged 20 percent or more behind price increases. The Southern economy was
totally shattered by the war, as railroads were torn up, food growing regions were occupied by
Union troops, and planters continued to try to raise cotton crops. Southern women were forced to
revive home production of goods in short supply, but even that was hard to do as Union invasions
turned women and children into refugees. As the war went on, dissent became a problem on both
sides. In the North Peace Democrats, known as Copperheads, contributed to the volatile brew of
political, ethnic, racial, and class antagonism that erupted into antidraft protests in several cities.
Nevertheless, freedom of

Collins Class Conflict Model
Lastly, Collins (1990) criticizes the class conflict model for its neglect of Black women s unpaid
domestic labor. This labor is domestically located within Black women s extended families. It
involves their contributions to Black family well being, such as keeping families together and
teaching children survival skills (Collins 1990: p. 44). From slavery to modern times, Black women
have been disproportionately engaged in the home. During slavery, Black women found solace in
the private, domestic sphere with their families, thereby resisting the exploitation that existed in the
public sphere. After emancipation, Black women hoping to solely focus on their domestic duties in
the home, were forced to work in the public sphere because the discrimination... Show more content

Rose and Clear (1998) describe the disruptive nature of incarceration, which is characterized by an
increase in single parent households, mothers working two jobs to support the family income, and
the deprivation of adult male romantic partners (p. 458 459). Since Black men are
disproportionality confined in prisons and jails, incarceration negatively impacts Black women
who are consequently relied upon to provide both economic and familial support (Rose and Clear,
1998). Therefore, I contend that Collins examination lacks insight on how a racist criminal justice

most commonly found in my research, there were more ineffective methods than effective ones.
During the assessment I continually focus on the more positive ways to combat human trafficking

movement of traffickers and report it making it easier to catch and apprehend traffickers. It has

To Be or Not to Be Barbie Essay
Every woman grows up knowing that they one day want to be beautiful. In Marge Piercy s
Barbie Doll she gives an in depth look at what negative effects the concept of beauty can have on
an individual. From infancy to a full grown adult woman, beauty has been a way of thinking and
lifestyle. As a little girlyou are given petite shaped, blonde, blue eyed dolls. While boys are given
brawny soldiers and mechanical toys.
What do little girls do with these dolls? They put on fresh makeup, change their fashionable
clothing, and style there long luscious hair. This alone is creating a psychological change in a little
girls brain, it is instilling that this is what is customary for a girl to do. Rather than fixing things

Young girls in middle school spend everyday thinking of ways that they could look better. Could
there have been a way to minimize these feelings of inadequacy at such an early age?
Since 1956 when the beautifully crafted Barbie was sent into production the idea of beauty
spiraled into a frenzy among the female population. Barbie was initially created after a fashion doll
named Lilli doll inspired by a West German cartoon character who was said throughout the years
to be a prostitute. With Barbies appearance comes the ideal look for all women, slim waisted, big
busted, wide hipped and eyed. The only thing is Barbie s figure and structure is entirely mythical.
According to a Boston University student Barbies neck is twice as long as the average humans
which would make it next to impossible for her to hold her head up, Barbies legs are 50% longer
than her arms, whereas the average woman s legs are only 20% longer than her arms. If a woman
were to have the same body type as Barbie she would not have enough body fat to allow
menstruation. (K. Wysoki) So this alone shows that the ideal weight and structure provided to our
youth is entirely unattainable.
On top of the constant reminder of what it is to be pretty Barbie also gives way to another type of
mind set. Materialism is more common amongst adolescent girls in today s world, they want the
best of the best and without it they are no one. With all of her inter changeable

First off, majority of high school students only think about high
school as a social club, as a learning institute. Why? Because all they worry about
are the latest shoes coming out, whether or not if I m prettier than them, or who s

they are ruled by their emotions and hormones. Their bodies go through changes

I can tell you that I seen many kids be teased, harassed and bullied because they
don t have the right shoes or other materialistic things. I have personally never been
at the bottom of the social ladder in high school but I m also not at the top of the

Tracy has high standards for herself and the people around her. In the beginning of the movie,
we see Tracy wearing a pant suit. This indicates a sense of dominance. The first traditional
feminine outfit that Tracy wears is when she is mocking the idea of the model hostess.2 The
ruffles on the dress represent foolishness and her distaste of the situation; she was pretending to
be someone she was not. When Tracy feels weak and powerful less, she is half dressed like in a
swimsuit. However when she is dressed up in elaborate gowns, she is calm and vigorous. The
dress she wears for the party before the day of the wedding was the most beautiful gown she s
worn in the movie, she exceeds the expectations for herself of being powerful and of high class.
However, the color of the gown (white) represents that the internal battle Tracy is having on
whether to marry George or do the right thing. Her wedding dress is a mixture of
dominance, similar to her pant suits, and a sense of helplessness. The broad shoulders of her dress
represents that she is not willing to settle for her happiness, but the loose and flowy parts of her
dress represent the feeling of not wanting to disappoint her loved

  • 3. Summary Of Kitchen By Banana Yoshimoto In the novel Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto, Yoshimoto demonstrates that family is important when coping with the difficulties of life. Yoshimoto shows this through the usage of the contrast of light and dark, and the motifs of the kitchen, and food. One motif that used is food, which is used to represent the presence of family, and how that aides coping. Yoshimoto uses the motif of the kitchen to represent the ability of the family to help another family member cope. Yoshimoto uses the contrast of lightand dark to show that as the characters shift from feeling grief to joy, people who can be considered family are involved. Yoshimoto uses the motif of food to show that family can help cope with life s troubles. One example of food representing family helping to cope, is when Mikage creates an international hodge podge (Yoshimoto 62) for Yuichi after the death of Eriko. Before Mikage re entering Yuichi s life, Yuichi has been drinking for a month (Yoshimoto, 63) which can be associated with the lots of instant dinners: a clear indication of his recent eating habits (Yoshimoto, 60). • 4. the ring critique Essay The movie The Ring was a horror film that I found to be a major disappointment. The opening scene is probably one of the best in the whole movie, which in my opinion is pathetic. When the young girl in the beginning was killed seven days after watching the tape because her heart stopped after seeing Samara, I thoughtto myself Wow, this may turn out to be an interesting movie, but they ruined it as soon as they showed the girl dead in the closet looking green and disfigured. I don t know where the directors are from, but in the real world, people don t turn green and look disfigured when their hearts stop. The movie continues with the girl s crazy aunt trying to solve the mystery of the videotape that could have been easily solved... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She became horrified and realized she, too, only now had seven days to discover the truth about the tape before being killed herself. Rachel and her son Aidan get caught right in the middle of this twisted plot when Samara comes after them, and it s up to Rachel and her ex husband Noah to save them all. I didn t like how this tape was the reason people were dying because it is so unrealistic, which made it hard for me to be scared or entertained by the plot at all. I also think that the movie went way to far in depth on such a narrow topic. This movie could have easily been shortened, which could have made it much more interesting and exhilarating. The opening scene where the girl slowly went towards the bathroom as the water slowly trickled out towards her foot and grabbed for the door handle was very suspenseful, but this was ruined because at this point your imagination was running wild wondering what was going to happen, then BAM! you see pretty much nothing and you are left wondering. There were a few highlights with this movie though; it wasn t a complete waste of eight dollars. The special effects during the movie were really good, especially when Samara came out of the television at the end of the movie. I also thought the little boy, Aidan, was a good actor, which helped keep me semi interested in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. What Was Hatcher s Method Of Acceptance Hatcher s acceptance was not valid because he sent a letter as acceptance when the offer was sent by e mail. Although Simons did not expressly state what the method of acceptance should be, the use of e mail implied e mail was the method of acceptance. As such since Hatcher used a different, slower method, it was not valid upon being sent. No, it could not be taken as a valid contract since the offer was made in a manner that was clearly made out of frustration and was not meant to be a serious offer. Kennedy could not collect the reward since Kennedy already turned in the watch without knowledge of the offer. Lodge does not have to give Kennedy the reward, since Kennedy did not mention wanting the reward. Kubach was incorrect because by changing her terms for accepting the position, she did not follow the mirror image rule of acceptance and thus she did not actually agree to the offer. What she actually did by suggesting the bonus was create a counteroffer.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Easter Jeep Safari Project Observation Report If I was given the opportunity to have $10,000,000 to work on any project that I would like I would start an organization that deals with multi use public lands. I will start by giving some background on why this issue is so important to me, the benefits it has for these towns that are closely located to the area in question, and finally what this would do for generations to come. Since being a young kid till now I ve spent many of our vacations in Moab, Utah. Moab is notoriously known for its red rocks, hiking, mountain biking, and avid off road communities. My family and friends fall into the last one; we have been building and modifying Jeeps to be able to explore the extensive trail systems that sprawl a crossed the land surrounding Moab.... It would be a terrible thing when something as iconic as the Delicate Arch was destroyed. These are the things that we need to preserve for everyone to enjoy and establishing National Parks have been useful. On the other side, much of this land is enjoyed by people who are active in motor sports, mountain biking, and others recreational activities that may have some impact on the environment. These places are where I grew to truly understand the beauty of our world, met many people with the same interest as I have, become closer as family and friends. All these things have created such a strong bond with me and the outdoors that it has actually led me to be more responsible for our world, things like cleaning up others trash just so that we don t get a bad reputation so that we can preserve what we love to do. I think letting people of future generations to go through the same bond and understanding that we need to make an effort to preserve our lands while still being able to use them for our personal recreation, whatever that might ... Feminist research is explicitly directed towards identifying, understanding and changing social factors affecting women. Women s participation in sports is a feminist issue deserving of research and theory development Harrison and Fahy (2005:702). Many scholars in the study of sociologyof sports use feminist theoryto understand power and genderrelations in the society (Coakley 2009:39). According to Smith [2010:98], issues of gender which are core to social life, have existed for a while in different locations making the concerns of masculinity and femininity essential. Habitus Bourdieu described habitus as embodied cultural capital that a person expresses in the form of skills and habits an unconscious disposition the person accumulates overtime. Socialization is one of the ways that an embodied cultural capital is attached to the body (Bourdieu 1977:72 95) Wacquant (2004:16) demonstrates habitus by describing the body as a seat, the instrument and the target. Before one attempts to partake in sports it is important for one to build body capital, gaining habitus is a sign of readiness to participate in sports (Wacquant 2004:127). In Wacquant s (2004:16) view, one needs to acquire a set of bodily and mental schemata and also to construct the theory of practice to effectively participate in sports (Bourdieu, 1997). Borrowing from this approach, I will seek to understand and describe my lived experience through active participation in sports. In this regard, my research will follow the dictates of Mauss, (1979) that, to attain a disposition to do sports as in the case of any other technique of the body, the work done by the individual will be for practical collective ... • 9. The Feminist Short Story Of The Great Beacons My dear reader, you live in a universe that is replete with adventures of the unknown, mysteries of the forgotten and falsehoods of the truth. Yet, those are all lesser tales which shall remain untold for now. The story in which you are about to delve into is far grander than any of the former. It is possibly the truest legend that I have collected. It has taken me several years to find each piece in this intricate tale. I had to venture to the very darkest corners if this world, which, mind you, are difficult to find and flagitious creatures dwell within. Other parts of the story, however, were easy to come across, and the furthest I had to go was to the ancient maple tree at the end of the lane. I realize that you may be curious of my identity,... Her frame was naturally petite, but now she was all sallow skin and protruding bones. She probably weighed about fifty pounds. Her skin was pallid, and nearly translucent. Her face was gaunt, and her once exquisite ebony locks were colorless from malnutrition. The only evidence that she was indeed alive, were her vitreous gasps for breath, and her large grey eyes. Her eyes were filled with a terror I can scarce describe. Aside from the terror, deep in her eyes was also a great suffering, one that only intensified when she saw the bars of her cell clang open. Her name was Violet, quite fittingly, for she was as delicate as her namesake, both in appearance, and temperament. She had been detained for nearly a full pass of the moon, facing abhorrent treatment. She had been starved, tortured, violated, and ridiculed by an all but venomous mob of piss drunk men. The same men who had once protected her, even befriended her. Betrayal, that devastating mistress, was her only friend now. • 10. Scrubs In My Old Lady The early 2000s was a prime time for hospital centered television shows were aired. House and Grey s Anatomy were among the most popular, but Scrubs stood among the best of the genre. While the other shows were drama focused, Scrubs took a more lighthearted approach to working at a hospital, though the show often takes on dark thematics from time to time. Scrubsis the best hospital televisionshow to have been aired because of the scenes that reflected the reality of hospitals, the soundtrack, and the genius improve the cast used to liven up scenes. In the fourth episode of the series, My Old Lady , the main character, JD, is told by his patient who is an old woman, that she is ready to die. In that moment, it shook me that while it is a doctor s duty to save a patient, the patient wants to be let go sometimes. A band that makes a recurring appearance is, The Blanks. This band does acapella, acoustic, or unplugged covers of songs that I like, most noteworthy was and acoustic cover of, Hey Ya, by Outkast, along with original content. A creative way for the incorporation of this band was that they made cameos as a group of hospital staff that have an acapella band doing covers of slogans or cartoon theme songs. • 11. Summary Of Alistair Macleod s The Boat The Dilemma Between Tradition and Opportunity Through the angle in the screen door I saw my father who had been walking into his room wheel around on one of his rubber booted heels and look at her with his blue eyes flashing like clearest ice beneath the snow that was his hair. His usually ruddy face was drawn and grey, reflecting the exhaustion of a man of sixty five who had been working in those rubber boots for eleven hours on an August day, and for a fleeting moment I wondered what I would do if he killed my motherwhile I stood there in the porch with those three foolish mackerel in my hand. Then he turned and went into his room and the radio blared forth the next day s weather forecast and I retreated under the noise and returned again,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When Macleod talks about the father s blue eyes flashing like clearest ice beneath the snow that was his hair (228) the reader has a picture painted in their mind. This sentence uses imagery to put emphasis behind the glare of the father s eyes. The word ice also has a second effect as it can refer to the cold heartedness and fuming temper of the father in the passage. Imagery continues to be used by Macleod as he continues on the reader is told that the father s usually ruddy face was drawn and grey (228). The father s face was mentioned on a few occasions throughout the story as the reader hears mention of his sunburnt face (230) just a couple pages later on. The reiteration of a small detail like this brings emphasis back to the original passage. In order for his face to look drawn and grey circumstances must be dire. Imagery is in many forms of writing and when used correctly, as in this passage, it elevates the writing and draws emphasis to specific parts of the story that could be easily missed without it. Imagery clearly shows the tense manner of this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Acne does not only have an effect physically on individuals, but it also affects them emotionally. There are many treatment options for people with acne ranging from very basic over the counter topical treatments to more invasive and intense treatments such as Isotretinoin. Along with medications that can be prescribed, the first thing that any one person can do to help possibly reduce their acne is change their diet, or avoid foods that would increase their likelihood of an increased breakout. There is much research going into whether diet truly does have an effect, but more and more information is being collected to support this hypothesis. American realized they should learn the Japanese economy model of high levels of coordination between business and government, well balance between stakeholders, highly trained workers as well as just in time method. However, in the 1990s, the flow has reversed with Japanese companies experienced pressures to adapt U.S style corporate governance and market oriented employment practice. U.S now enjoys macroeconomic success, generate millions of new jobs while Japan and Europe experienced slow growth and high level of unemployment. American model with flexible employment arrangements, shareholder sovereignty, decentralized companies recaptured the lead as slower growing peers such as Japan and Europe regarding the model as the best. Generally, this two economies become more aware of each other, they compare themselves and more likely to adopt each other s practices, especially at the level of the industry in which they complete. For example, U.S investors are active in Japan, trying to persuade local executives to adopt U.S style business practices, just as U.S policy makers have been urging the Japanese government to emulate American laws regarding trade, commerce and intellectual property. Ever since I was a young child, I ve always resonated with the idea of helping animals more so than anyone and anything else in this world. My love for animals had begun when I was a mere four years old. I ve always had pets: dogs, cats, hamsters, guinea pigs, and much more. To find out more about how to help adoptable animals in shelters, I contacted Amanda Smasal, a community outreach coordinator at Wayside Waifs. Wayside Waifs is no kill shelter located in Kansas City, Missouri which has adoptable dogs and cats, ready and willing to go to safe, loving homes. When I first emailed Smasal asking if she would participate in the interview, I felt overwhelming fear and began to panic about the whole encounter. The fear of having to ask someone I had never met to talk with me is something that scares me. Nonetheless, I sent the email asking politely yet efficiently to see if she would give me a few of her precious minutes to answer questions about a cause worth fighting for: animal rescue hospitals. She quickly responded to my quaint email approximately a day later stating she would happily answer any and all questions I have, significant or insignificant. The questions took a couple days to figure out. The few days I had to create the questions were filled with creativity and a tad bit of questionable ideas. The questions I asked her were the things I would want to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 15. My Firm s Services Regarding Proper Accounting Practices... It has come to my understanding that you requested my firm s services regarding proper accounting practices for the acquisition of long term debentures. Therefore, I write to you this memo to address some issues you might be having with your newly obtained debt and to explain how to properly amortize it. I have been informed that you already have an accounting expert that advised you to use the Straight Line method of amortization for the discount on the bond. My expertise lies on the Effective Interest method of amortization. 1.Determining Bond Price To determine the price of the bond, the face value of the bond must be brought to its present value. The rationale behind this comes from an investment principle that considers that the money given up in the present could yield a gain in the long term if used as an investment. To arrive to the present value, we use a market rate that represents the yield the average investor would require to spend money in a new venture (in this particular case, 11%). Therefore, even though the Bond s face value might be $1,000,000, your company is expected to get $924,623.74. The difference between this two numbers, $75,376.26, is considered a discount that you allow for offering a rate that is lower than the rate requested by the investors (in this case, 9%). 2.Amortization of Discount I took the liberty of creating an amortization schedule to help you visualize the immediate difference between straight line and effective interest methods ... • 16. Dealing In The Poem By W. H. Auden The Poem was written by W.H Auden and was written in 1936. The title in itself has many connotations of sadness. The word Funeral is associated with someone dying. The word blues on the other hand is a type of Jazz that often conveys sadness. By combining the two, we can see that the author has cleverly manipulated the title into conveying sadness. The poem opens energetically, with an intensely emphasized verb Stop, a start that also suggests an ending. Certainly, much of the rest of the poem is similarly constructed on heavily accentuated verbs of command. The attitude of the poem is highly imperative. The poet gives out orders, but the instructions he issues suggest that he cannot believe that the death of the certain person has happened. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Death severs this connection, creating a shift in how life is perceived. The strength of this is in contrast with the images of death, the funeral preparations, and how society thinks of mourning that are in the previous stanzas. The last line of the third stanza and the fourth stanza speak to the perpetual sense of loss that death has on the plane of living. In the fourth stanza the poet s agony rings out even more passionately. Here he stresses that Nature notice his grief, calling it to extinguish the stars and the moon and the sun and get rid of the ocean. He desires the world to reflect the emptiness within him left by death. Human monuments to the dead will not be adequate at best. There is no optimism at the end of the poem; the reader is left with the very real and very hostile sense of the man s grief, since no end can be accomplished without the poet s ... • 19. Summary Of The Song Changes By Charles Bradley Changes by Charles Bradley is a song that resonates with me as a song that triggers an emotional response. The song was first released in 2013 and is a cover of the 1972 band Black Sabbath (Cory, 2017). It is apparent by the title that the topic for the song is the changes that the artist is going through or has gone through in his life. At the very beginning of the song, Bradley says She was my woman. I loved her so. But it s too late now. I ve let her go... But soon the world. Had its evil way , which illustrates the loss of a partner but is still ambiguous in how he lost her but one can infer it was due to death (Cory, 2017). The lyrics are very simple and they all come together to form a detailed depiction of Bradley s emotions. When I hear Bradley sing about his loss, it triggers me into thinking about the loved ones that I have lost. The rhythm of the song is very slow pace and calm, which sets the mood for Bradley s gritty deep voice, but when the chorus hits, then the saxophone jumps in to excite the whole song. The beat is soft enough to induce a deep thought and when the chorus hits, you do not get the usual sense of excitement but rather one of contempt delight. Lastly, the artist is another thing that triggers a Dionysian response for me, the reason being that Bradley looks just like my grandfather that passed about a year ago. • 22. Community Journalism as a Synonym for Small Town Newspapers Literature Review: The notion of community journalism is hardly a new one. However, during the past decade, the concept gained much fascination and interest among industry analysts. The literature available on the topic points out that the reason behind this strong comeback of community journalism lies in the fact that most regions where the boom is taking place are undergoing a transitional phase that paved the way for this shift. The literature, however, refers to two trends in this matter: the first is the effect of economic transition on the reemergence of community journalism in countries such as the US and the UK, the second is the effect of political transition on the emergence of community journalism in countries such as South Africa. In other words, while the former example shows a rebirth of an old notion as a result of economic decline, the latter shows an adoption of the concept in the hope of facilitating political transition. Concerning the effect of economic transition, one theory is that the diminishing influence of larger newspapers (in the US and the UK) and the decline in number of their circulation allowed localized news outlets to flourish and become more prominent (Conhaim, 2006). During these times of financial troubles, local publications had the power to remain profitable by focusing on small target audiences, and offer unique, concentrated, localized content as their niche product. The Problems Of Obedience And Authority Evangelina Venturini Colleen Harvel English F6974 October 15, 2014 The Problems of Obedience to Authority People will do about anything to stay out of trouble when it comes to someone with authority that cannot be argued with. Stanley Milgram did an experiment on the topic of obedience to authority; he wanted to know how ordinary people could do horrible things if forced to by someone of authority. Obedience to authority is instinctual for human beings, there has and will always be someone with a higher authority than ourselves. How can normal, ordinary people that think of themselves or are thought of as genuinely good people do things that they know is morally wrong when told to do so by someone of authority? That is the question that Milgram asked himself when he started his experiments. The main point of the experiment was to test why people listen and act on what people of authority tell them to do. Milgram took ordinary people and proved that most of the general populace is willing to physically hurt another human being if provoked by someone in a position of authority. This causes a person to question as Encina does, Why were those who challenged authority in the minority? So entrenched is obedience it may void personal codes of conduct (Encina). In the experiment Milgram picked people off of the streets and tested them on how far they would go to hurt someone when instructed to do so by someone of authority. (word counts: 981) Few months before, Kobe Bryant who is probably the most controversial player ended his 20 year basketball career. As a limitation, the players in 21st century means the players who spent most of his career in 21st century, which put Michael Jordan out of consideration. Hence, the range of the choices could be probably narrowed to three players: Tim Duncan, Lebron James and Kobe Bryant. Moreover, according to Dan Harriman, a professional writer mentioned, a great player is the one has his contribution on and off the court, which is also the reason Michael Jordon is generally considered as the greatest player ever (in 20th century? The story frames it as, Boys hanging from the most beautiful sycamores in the world. It shamed her remembering the wonderful soughing trees rather than the boys (pg. 7). Information relayed back to Earth from the two probes (which reached Saturn nine months apart, Voyager 1 first in 1980, Voyager 2 in 1981) helped scientists get a much better understanding. Though the atmosphere was expected to be quite similar in composition to the Sun and to Jupiter, Saturn s atmosphere was actually quite different. There was significantly less Helium in Saturn s outmost atmosphere, leading to many interesting conclusions, including that heavier Helium was sinking lower in the atmosphere (Voyager Saturn, NASA). Saturn was also determined to have a lighter density than any other planet and is, in fact, less dense than water. However, it is thought that the occurrence of lesbian intimate partner violence is comparable to the heterosexual domestic violence rates. Studies conducted in the past indicated that between 41 percent and 68 percent of all lesbians have at one point experienced some kind of abuse in the intimate relationship in the hands of their partners. The studies estimate that 90 percent of lesbians experience verbal abuse while between 7 percent and 48 percent experience physical abuse. Apparently, between 5 percent and 57 percent of women in lesbian relationships experience some kind of sexual assault within the relationships context at some point in their life. Due to ... Explain the part played by external pressure in the fight against apartheid and minority rule in South Africa. From 1960 onwards, when Harold Macmillan made his change of winds speech, the world started to place external pressures on South Africa, and this was one of the main causes of the end of apartheid. Economic sanctions and sporting isolation were the two main subdivisions of external pressure. Sporting isolation made South Africa realise that the minority rule and the apartheid regime was greatly frowned upon by the rest of the world, and caused many Afrikaners to change their attitude to the way the country was being run; this was because they didn t want to be excluded from the rest of the world s competitions and tournaments solely for their governments issues; it made the Afrikaners feel guilty for the regime ruling South Africa. This attitude would eventually help in ending the apartheid regime. Economic sanctions, however, were much more effective in the ending of minority rule. The movement of protein into your stomach stimulates a hormone which delays the empting of the stomach, and means that intestinal contractions are slower while the chyme is moving through the small intestine. Dory provided moral support and comfort in this search that Marlin has been missing for years. Maslow s Hierarchy of Needs Maslow s hierarchy of needs is a systematic arrangement of needs according to priority in which basic needs must be met before less basic needs are aroused. At the point in the movie where Dory meets Marlin, Dory was stuck on the second level of Maslow s pyramid because she lacked in needs of love and belongingness that is necessary to climb up higher on the hierarchy of needs. When she is introduced in the movie, she had no love, no family, no self esteem, and was only concerned about the basic needs in life like safety and security. At the point in the movie where Marin pulls her out of the jellyfish, Dory progressed to the third level of the pyramid because in her dedicated pursue to aid and assist Marlin, they had developed a relationship. • 41. Analysis Of Blood On The Forge By William Attaway A Change of Culture Culture has the power of informing you of someone s identity. It is said that culture is the way of life a group of people follow, meaning their behaviors, beliefs, values, and symbols that identify them as where they came from, who they are, and who they can become. On the other hand, we know that culture is always changing and adapting to the lifestyleand advances of the present day. This can happen by the adaptation groups of people have suffered in order to achieve a better way of living other than the one they ve previously had. Examples of these changes can be seen with the Great Migration in the 1900s. A movement in which many African Americans moved to the North to work and settle in the steel mills in search of a better life. In Blood on the Forge by William Attaway, we are able to in fact prove that culture can change and adaptation plays a key role in our existence. The book portrays this change through the life and experiences of the Moss brothers and their lifestyle from Kentucky to Pennsylvania. With that of culture comes our identity through music. The death of the blues serves as an example in how culture is put up to the challenge of change. Melody, Chinatown, and Big Mat represent the loss of folk culture which accompanied the Great Migration of Black people from the rural South to the industrial North (Waldron 58). As we begin to read, we are able to interpret their lives and identity in the South through Melody s music. This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The United States criminal justice system is not an institution to be underestimated, as it represents the highest incarceration rate of all world nations at a staggering 700 inmates per 100 thousand citizens (Krisberg, 7). Based on the social and political structure of democracy in the United States, it is argued that incarceration systems should follow the same roots of equality and freedom; however, the current format demonstrates otherwise. Currently, the United States criminal justicesystem faces issues of inhumane treatment due to the sheer overcrowding, which restrict inmates from just treatment within penitentiaries. This lack of equality standards was argued in the 2011 court case, Brown v. Plata, which California prisonsystems were forced to decrease prisons overcapacity rate from 175% to 137.5% due to the overwhelming amount of inmate mistreatment (Koehler, 3). In the decision of Brown v. Barbie was initially created after a fashion doll named Lilli doll inspired by a West German cartoon character who was said throughout the years to be a prostitute.
