Early American Music Research Paper
One aspect of American history that has remained constant is the development of its music.
American music has always been a building block of American history, constantly changing along
with the country. In the beginning of what would soon become our great country, the migration of
European immigrants was a very heavy influence on American culture, lifestyle, and musicat the
time. In the beginning stages of the colonization of America, European religious views were very
present and, the birth of early American sacred music was born out of this time of religious
exploration. With many people attempting to convert others, the music they used portrayed often
their views and approaches to these attempts. One of the groups of people doing this were the
Shaker community, they had a belief of shaking off their sins, the music they used in their services
represented the belief of that activity. With very up tempo music and a heavy Dance feel to it, they
used this music to encourage the idea of shaking off their sins and all ungodly things. Not long after
the occurrence of the religious revival in the new American colonies, the composing of American
hymns started with William... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During that era of hardship, many new genres of music were being born, from political
broadside ballads to minstrel songs. At a time when the country was split in two, the music of
that time was also pulled back and forth over the battle line. This was present in the song My
Maryland . The original song was published as the state song for Maryland and in support for the
Union, but soon after it was revised by some Maryland residents who were in support of the
Confederate army. They took the original My Maryland song and altered some of the lyrics to
show their views of opposition toward The Union. This course of action replays repeatedly
throughout American history in future genres of

Mistranslation And Mistranslation In The Joy Luck Club
Mistranslation was a reoccurring theme in the book, The Joy Luck Club. There were frequent
scenarios when characters could not understand each other properly due to mistranslation and
miscommunication. Jing Mei has trouble understanding her mother in the following excerpt: It s
not showoff. She said the two soups were almost the same, chabudwo. Or maybe she said butong,
not the same thing at all. It was one of those Chinese expressions that means the better half of mixed
intentions. I can never remember things I didn t understand in the first place. Jing Mei cannot fully
understand her mothers intended meanings to a multitude of conversations due to this. Waverly
Jong had a certain run in with the language barrier as well. Aii ya. So shame be with mother? She
grasped my hand even tighter as she glared at me. I looked down. It s not that, it s just so obvious.
It s just so embarrassing. Embarrass you be my daughter? Her voice was cracking with anger. That
s not what I meant. That s not what I said. Waverly is trying her best to explain to her mother that
she does not want her mother to say that she is her daughter to every person she meets and the
underlying feel of becoming a trophy for her mother. Her mother has difficulty understanding this
and she gets angry at her daughter. This miscommunication escalates the hurt feelings felt between
both parties.
This theme of mistranslation can be found everywhere in the current world. In the article Language
Matters: How a Minor Mistranslation Can Affect US China Relations the author goes on to talk
about how the U.S. mistranslated a small portion of the Chinese spokesman s comments. He goes
on to explain how these stories affected the United States of America. He says: These stories led
Sebastian Gorka, a top official on the U.S. National Security Council, to deride China s statement
by pointing out that the islands can be seen on Google Earth. Gorka then went on to decry China s
territorial expansionism. Gorka s broadcast was heard by the nation and some peoples ideas might
have been swayed that the Chinese are bad. This relates to the The Joy Luck Club in one way
particular, the idea that the smallest miscommunication problems can lead to a huge

Shooting An Elephant By George Orwell
Shooting an Elephant The short story Shooting an Elephant by George Orwell describes Orwell
s experience as a police officer of a town in the British colony of Burma. George Orwell, a
military occupier in the Burmese land is much hated by the civilians. The hatred he receives from
the locals makes him despise the British Empires mistreatment on the Burmese people. However,
he also resents the locals in the village for revolting against him, for he is only a worker of the
British Empire. Shooting an Elephant by George Orwelldiscusses the author s views and experience
on peer pressure through the structure, quality, and applicability of the information shared. The
incident that took place was when a domesticated elephant escaped from its chains, and was
causing harm to the villagers and their property. The mahout a caretaker of the elephant went
searching towards a different route which happened to be 12 hours away; the only solution in
stopping this berserk elephant was by shooting it. George Orwell, the police officer who works in
Moulmein, Burmawas conflicted upon shooting or not shooting at the elephant. Orwell felt
pressured by the villagers when confronting the elephant. As he walked towards the field, a large
sum of the village was following close by. The villagers felt a wave of excitement as they saw the
gun in Orwell s hand; to witness the killing of the elephant was seen as a joyous celebration in their
eyes. The villager s excitement in witnessing the

Analysis Of Perseverance By Maya Angelou
Perseverance You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be
necessary to encounter the defeats, so you know who you are, what you can rise from, how you
can still come out of it (Maya Angelou). In all the nonfiction books read in class perseverance is
the main concept in each story. The dictionary defines perseverance as continued effort to do or
achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition : the action or condition or an
instance of persevering . In terms of usage, perseverance is a noun. Common synonyms for
perseverance include persistence and steadfastness . The antonyms of perseverance is giving up
and not trying. This is important because perseverance is having to keep trying... Show more content

Everyday Melba was taunted, spit on, yelled at, and had her heels walked on but persevered
through it all and never gave up. Malala Yousafzai persevered everyday to try to get an equal
education. Malala never gave up trying to get an equal education and wanted to be treated no
different because she was a girl. Coach Thomas known as Ed demonstrated perseverance
towards his family, friends, and his AP football team. Ed always pushed the boys to their best
ability and never treated anyone negatively. He not only was a coach he was a role model,
inspiration, and a leader to the entire community. Each individual wanted to make an impact on
everyone s life. Nonfiction literature represents the understanding of perseverance and connects to
influencing readers by doing anything, no matter the difficulty of achieving a certain goal and
connects an individual by behavioral traits and feelings they have. Melba Pattillo Beals in
Warriors Don t Cry demonstrates how she never gave up and looked at all the positives. Nine
students including Melba immigrated a school system, but did not get treated well. While the nine
students wanted to give up they did not let anyone stop them and kept going back to school. A
large crowd of jeering, pencil throwing students hovered around us menacingly. We had no choice
but to go forward (162). Perseverance is the author s purpose because this demonstrates how the
nine students never gave up even as they went through

The Plan For Implementing Phase Preparation Essay
PC, as requested please find some options that can be made available to the government since its
announcement to sell certain assets in the 2014 Budget. These options based on the assumption that
selling of these assets may not materialized next year. Most of the information provided is based on
qualitative analysis due to lack of information received.
Background
With the 2014 Government Budget now shift towards implementing phase preparation, one of the
main challenges for the government now is the realization of its estimated revenue, particularly
from the sale of government assets worth $475.2 million, equivalent to 17.5 percent of estimated
revenue. This sale of assets is commonly known as privatization , thus involved the selling of some
government owned and operated businesses to private enterprises.
Total revenue for 2014 is estimated at $2,721.8 million (32.9% of GDP), with a total expenditure
of $2,883.3 million (34.8% of GDP). The overall net deficit is estimated around $161.5 million,
equivalent to 1.9 percent of GDP.
Excluding sale of government assets, total revenue is estimated to decline to around $2,246.6
million (27% of GDP), with overall net deficit increased to $636.7 million, equivalent to 7.7
percent of GDP. Moreover, assuming 60 percent of asset salesis realized in 2014, the overall net
deficit should be around 5.4 percent of GDP.
According to the Budget Estimates 2014, these assets sales include the $250.0m sale proceeds from

A Modest Proposal A Satire
In 1757 Jonathan Swift wrote A Modest Proposal; a satire telling the public that the answer to
the economic problem was to eat their own children (Lynch). According to Merriam Webster,
satire is trenchant wit, irony, or sarcasm used to expose and discredit vice or folly ( Satire ). Satire
uses humor, exaggeration, parody, and ridicule to expose folly in society or a person and
advocates for some sort of change. Satireis broken into three different forms: Juvenalian, Horatian,
and Menippean satire. Satire is typically thought of as funny or humorous, but this assumption only
covers Horatian or Menippean satire; this leaves out Juvenalian. Juvenalian satire is a harsh satire.
It bombards vice with ridicule and contempt by bringing to light... Show more content on

Satire always has a purpose. If a reader truly wants to understand, the Why? has to be asked. Behind
every work of satire, there is a why. The writer wants the readers to read his or her work and leave
with a desire to change. A Modest Proposalby Jonathan Swift is, again, an example of this. To the
casual reader, it would seem that Swift was writing a horrible proposal. He or she may even pick
up on the fact that his satire is Juvenalian satire and the techniques he used but without the Why?
the purpose is lost. Swift saw the pitiful situation that the Irish people were in and he also saw
that at least part of it was self inflicted. The Irish people were just letting the English subject them
to high taxing and oppression, and Swift could see this. The purpose of him writing A Modest
Proposal was to get the Irish people to do something about their circumstances. He shocked his
readers in having this realization. The purpose of the satire is the most important part of any satire.
The writer is advocating for a change from people, usually for the better. The techniques and
methods are just different pathways the writer can take on his or her road to voicing

The Case Of Frost V Chief Constable Of South Yorkshire Police
In the case of Frost v Chief Constable of South Yorkshire Police [1999] Lord Steyn stated that the
area of Tort Law relating to psychiatric trauma is rather complex. In order for the claimant to
successfully recover compensation the court needs to consider an amalgam of rules and exceptions
as well as different categories of claimants, which can, at times, be hard to identify and justify.
Critically discuss this statement considering the development in this area of Tort Law. Is the current
distinction of primary and secondary victim justifiable? Is this area of law currently coherent and
efficient?
This essay aims to provide a critical discussion of the common law of the current development of
negligently inflicted psychiatric injury or illness previously known as nervous shock and the
development and history in this area of tort law, while awarding damages for negligently inflicted
injury and looking at the distinction between primary and secondary victim when claiming
damages and why it is said to be complex.
Psychiatric injury, also known as nervous shock has been perceived to have a complex criteria
and principles that have to be met before one can claim for damages. Claims for nervous shock
have been seen to have adopted an illogical approach leading to unfairness in order to prevent an

Next Year Research Paper
Well, well, well. Where do I even start?
Grades I guess overall, I had a pretty good year, in terms of academics. I ve kept all As
throughout the whole year, which in nice. I even got a perfect attendance award one time, (2nd
Nine Weeks) which is shocking, because I get sick really easily, and i m pretty sure I was absent.
Hey, i m in no position to complain. School is a relatively easy thing for me, grades, teachers, etc.
Personally, I really enjoy school. It s something i m good at, and something that I can understand
easily. My only problem is being surrounded by idiots who think they are entitled to more than the
average student.
Trips The school field trips are nice, even more so because of how small we are. I d have to say my

sticky notes everywhere. It s a mess, but it works. And hey, my goal wasn t to be more organized.
Next Year s Goals My goals for next year are simple: Get in shape, join ROTC, and make new
friends at my new school. I ll be changing schools because Master Sergeant is moving his jib to
McLain, and my mom is dating him so it s only natural i d go. The only goal i d have problems
with would be making new friends, because by now everyone has their own clicks and circles.
Conclusion In conclusion, my year was pretty good. I had fun on a few trips, I made excellent
grades, and I sorted out some issues I had at home. I had a lot of great moments that meant a lot
to me, like getting my dog and being with my friends and very few bad moments. I will be
changing schools once this custody thing is sorted out, and hopefully make new friends and enjoy
the school. In short, I had a pretty good year. That s

Disadvantages Of Technology And Media
Impacts of Technology and Media Baym (2015), Murthy (2013), and Andrejevic (2013) together
demonstrate the advantages and disadvantages that technology and media have on today s society.
These three authors provide multiple thoughts that relate to each other, but also have different
outlooks on many other points. Social mediaallows the immediate spread of information. While
Twitter has negative effects on humans, some research shows that there it is possible to have
positive outcomes as well. Murthy (2013) focuses on how Twitter has helped shape communication
in today s world. Unlike most social media sites, Twitter uses a 140 character count to ensure
messages are concise. Translating complex thoughts into just one hundred or so words can be
challenging for most, but the message will turn out just as powerful, if not more. Baym (2015)
stated that new technologycould have a positive impact on families In the context of contemporary
digital media, the hope remains that new communication technologies will bring families and
loved ones together (p. 41). For example, if a child had something to say to their parents that was
very important, they might feel more comfortable doing it through technology. People find it
easier to text or post something rather than saying it face to face because it gives people more
time to choose the perfect wording. Once a person say something verbally, there is no delete key to
take back the words that were said. New forms of technology and media are being used without
forethought, which is causing mania, panic, and misinformation. Baym (2013) proposes different
theories to support the various consequences of machines. Technological determinism being one of
her perspectives, argues that machines change humans (Baym, 2015, p. 27). An example of
machines altering humans would be the constant desire to have the newest technological device.
Not only is it a negative aspect to be controlled by machines, but it can also be detrimental to the
human character to believe that in order to function properly one must have the most advanced
machine by their side. Similarly to Baym (2015), Andrejevic (2013) discusses the dangers of

The Roman Medicine
Mens sana in corpore sano (Juvenal 10.356). A healthy mind in a healthy body, the Ancient Romans
lived by this motto. The Ancient Romans believed that the health of the people was key to success
in war and in creating a prosperous empire. Roman texts that have been gathered overtime have
greatly influenced modern medical practices and without them, modern medicinewould not be as
advanced as it is today. The Ancient Romans learned numerous details about the human body and
applied their knowledge in ways that were superior compared to other cultures occupying the time
period. Roman medicine was advanced for its time because the Romans adopted advanced methods
from Ancient Greek medicine, they organized architecture for the sake of public health, and
because of their vast knowledge of disease, herbs, and medical tools.
The Romans would not have acquired an interest in medicine if it weren t for early Greek
influence. Around 500 BC, the Romans and the Greeks first came in contact with each other and
by 146 B.C. a large portion of Greece had become a province of the Roman Empire. With the
exposure to Greek traditions, the Romans began to obtain information from the Greeks, but only
based their own ideas on Greek findings. Greek ideas were considered to be impractical and
inferior to Roman ideas, which were always centered on bringing success to the empire. Once the
Roman Empire expanded into Greece, many Greek doctors travelled to Rome. The Greeks brought

Essay on Women s Roles in Greek Society
The Iliad uncovers the truth behind what Greeks believed to be the role of women in society.
The Greek goddesses and the mortal women represent two sides that women had in society. The
Greek goddesses held power over the war, whereas, the mortal women are there as prizes or
timГ©. Aphrodite is the prime example of a goddess who held a lot of power, mainly by using
manipulation, in the Trojan War. Helenrepresents the quintessential idea of a woman representing
timГ©. These two portrayals of women in Greek society depict how people recognized women s
role in society, with Aphrodite representing a woman with power as a manipulative goddess and
Helen representing a woman who was merely timГ©, a prize to be obtained. Aphrodite expressed

Aphrodite is a symbol of that view of women in Greek society; however, Aphrodite not only uses
her power of manipulation against men, but also against women. Aphrodite manipulates Helen
in order to serve her needs. Helen is used as an unwilling tool of Aphrodite s ambition (Allan
149). Helen is controlled from the beginning by Aphrodite, who causes Helen to fall in love with
Paris. F.J. Groten discussed that Helen went with Paris because she was under the spell of
Aphrodite; Helen was deprived of her judgement and surrendered herself to the charms of Paris
(36). In Book III, when Paris comes back from a duel with Menelaus, Aphrodite goes to Helen to
tell her to go to bed with Paris. When Helen refuses, Aphrodite threatens her exclaiming, Cease to
provoke me, lest I make thee more, the world s aversion, than their love before; now the bright
prize for which mankind engage, than, the sad victim, of the public rage (The Iliad 105). Helen has
no choice but to comply with Aphrodite s commands because Aphrodite is telling Helen to obey
or she will make all people hate her. Aphrodite needs Helen to sleep with Paris because Aphrodite
must keep Paris happy to maintain her end of the deal, which was to give him Helen in love. She is
also taunting Hera and Athena with her power and ability to control the situation. Aphrodite brings
out the manipulative trait that men see in women during this time period. They are aware of a

Compare Beowulf Is An Epic Hero Archetypes
Epic Hero This essay is going to be comparing how the character Beowulf and Roy Hobbs are
alike and different. Statistics show that there is a lot of similarities between these two reads and
both a great example of an Epic Hero archetype. They both show strong characteristics of a Epic
Hero but are different people in general and their goals or priorities in what they are trying to
accomplish are completely different. Beowulfhas strength like no other. He is your typical epic hero
. He Saves the day in a majestic and seeming to be an impossible epic way. Like for a couple
examples of his strength is how he ripped off grendel s arm when he tried to run away. No normal
person would be able to do that. Another example is when he picked up the mighty sword when he
slew grendel s motheras everyone was appalled by his strength. Beowulf is a very good example of
an epic hero. He Is very strong and it seems like he does a lot stuff that is not possible and is a very
good leader and persuasive. People follow in his footsteps because he is a great influence on the
people. Beowulf is in an older time where people were not as advanced as us and have to fight all
the time and there are an evil beast to slay. They way people act or are treated are a lot different
than the way people are treated in Roy Hobbs. The people in the book of Beowulf are a lot more
barbaric, like when Beowulf ripped off grendel s arm and they hung it up on front of the door for
everyone to see. Then when

The distribution of the test statistic under the null hypothesis is derived from the assumptions
identified previously. Common test statistics may follow the following distributions: Normal,
Student T, and Chi Square. This distribution separates the possible values of the estimatorinto two
categories: values for which the null hypothesis is accepted or rejected. The region for which
we accept the null hypothesis is called the critical region and the area underneath the curve that
corresponds to the critical region is known as the level of confidence. Hence, we can develop a
confidence interval for which we can see the lowest and highest point of the critical region. Any
observed sample mean that lies outside of this confidence interval (outside the critical region)
would cause us to reject the null hypothesis in favor of the alternative hypothesis. The area of the
rejection region is known as the level of significance and represents type I error (alpha)
corresponding to the probability that a true null hypothesis is rejected (as opposed to type II error
beta; the probability of accepting a false null hypothesis). Essentially, hypothesis testing calls for
comparing a test statistic to the critical value of the test statistic. If this test statistic is greater than
the critical value of the test statistic, we will reject the null hypothesis in favor of the alternative
hypothesis. If

Sanity Like One Flew Over The Cuckoo s Nest
Throughout the mid 1960 s to the late 1970 s, the concept and interest of mental illness has been
studied and discussed in countless different mediums ranging from films that tackled issues of
sanity like One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest to novels that dealt with much darker issues such as
schizophrenia in Flora Schreiber s Sybil. One of the most controversial and talked about
productions of the 20th century is Peter Shaffers 1974 Tony winning play, Equus, which recounts
Dr. Martin Dysart s encounter and treatment of a seventeen year old boy, Alan Strang, who blinded
six horses with an icepick. The play focuses on therapy sessions between Dysart and Alan in which
Dysart struggles arduously to bring to the surface Alan s inner psyche and reasons for blinding the
different horses. The play has content that may suggest the story focuses on mental illness,
sexuality, and religion; however, this is only when the text is read and understood on an efferent
level. The true essence of Equusis located in the numerous biblical parallels found through the
analyzation of the plot lines that suggest. Through the analysis and biblical relation of plot points
and scenes in Equus, the true essence of the story is revealed; not only is Equus a story of mental
illness and sexuality, but it is also a parable of sorts, showing biblical passages and stories in a
different and more relatable light.

Sergeant s First Duty Day With D Squad
I am nominating Sergeant Jeff Prindle and Sergeant Chris Wells for Supervisor of the Quarter. I am
intentionally nominating them together because, as individuals, they are outstanding leaders;
however, as a team, they are unstoppable. Their leadership goes above and beyond that of their
peers, together creating a team of deputies that have received respect and attention from the
community.
Sergeant Prindle s first duty day with D Squad was September 8, 2014. That day, our agency
endured the greatest loss imaginable. Effective and motivating leaders are essential to recovering
from tragedy. Sergeant Prindle worked effortlessly to ensure his deputies were cared for mentally
and physically even though he had just met most of them. Every new ... Show more content on

For those deputies who have shown interest in areas where he is less knowledgeable, he has
contacted other experienced deputies and supervisors and provided the opportunity for the
deputies to work with them. Sergeant Prindle shows that he is concerned with his squad s
personal wellbeing too. When his deputies have personal situations, he contacts them and offers
his personal assistance. Sergeant Prindle conducts himself in a professional manner and his
leadership style gains the respect of his deputies. His uniform is always clean, pressed and well
fitted. His command presence is an example for others to follow. He motivates his deputies by
leading from the front, answering calls for service and conducting traffic stops, while maintaining
his administrative duties. He maintains a healthy lifestyle and encourages his deputies to do the
same. He is also an active member of the SWAT team and encourages his deputies to seek out
collateral duties to enhance their law enforcement career and expand their knowledge. On his off
time, Sergeant Prindle is also a leader in the Air Force Reserve, currently holding the rank of
Lieutenant Colonel. Balancing two leadership roles while maintaining physical fitness and a family
is not an easy task, yet, he handles it with ease.
Sergeant Wells came to D Squad in October 2014. He also had previous leadership experience but
was new to leadership at CCSO. He immediately jumped into his

Child Recovery
What is the Role of Education in the Recovery of a Child?
Often, when a child is ill or needs behavioral health treatment, education is the last thing on a
guardian s mind. They re focused on the day to day management of their child s care:
communicating with doctors and nurses and easing their child s fears during his or her hospital stay.
During and after treatment, the focus is on the child s recovery so they can go back to being a kid:
playing with their friends, enjoying family time, and transitioning back to school.
The moment a child walks through those hospital doors they become a student patient, who not
only has to deal with their illness, but also keep up with their education. It can be extremely

Many student patients must miss extended periods of school, becoming disconnected from their
education and social life. They may feel that their teachers and friends have forgotten about them.
Some may become depressed and have anxiety about returning to school after treatment. So, it s
important they stay engaged. KidsHealth authors recommend that student patients stay connected
via online social networking sites, email, instant message, text messaging, and talking on the phone
with classmates, friends, and teachers. They also state that staying connected to school bring
academic, cognitive, psychological, and social benefits.
There are numerous reasons why children must be admitted to the hospital for treatment. Some
kids may be battling cancer and need chemo. Others may need to visit the hospital a few days a
month for kidney dialysis. A child with a disability may need regular physical therapy treatment.
On the other side, children who struggle with a mental, social, or behavioral illness, like bipolar
disorder, depression, or post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may miss school for extended
periods of time to treat or manage their condition and minimize stressors.
According to an article on Nationwide Children s, stress is a common part of every child s life. A

Foucault s essay tended to dismiss the author from his position with respect to analyse the texts
while Barthes granted all the interpretative responsibly to the reader. Both theorists apprehended the
notion of author has no authority in directing the interpretation of their writings. Foucault, in his
essay What Is an Author? argues that the critics should not evaluate the text in relation with its
author, instead, they should analyse the text itself in the light of the its structure, basic form and its
design architecture. His brief description of author is just a discursive person. Foucault commented
on himself in his essay for being focused on a specific subject, he justifies that it is not because they
were interesting to him but because the subject may have something to do his personal life. He
affirms that his experience with the things that surround him would help him better recognize or

Sexual Education And Sex Education
The purpose of this paper is to explain the importance of sexual education and describe differences
and similarities in some of the research done on this topic. Having sexual education available to
youth is the key in reducing the number of unwanted situations in the sexual health of the
individuals. Teaching adolescents about sex is beneficial because they become aware of
consequence that might follow specific actions. This is a chance to ensure adolescents take safer
routes when deciding to become sexually active. Youth sexual education has been correlated with
preventing unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Many schools have
sexual education programs but many teenage pregnancies that are unplanned and STIs are
occurring. One reason could be because very few of these sexual education programs are attending
to the traditional social norms around sexuality and gender. It is important to consider and focus on
the traditional social norms because findings in previous studies have found those that hold
traditional social beliefs around gender and sexuality, are at greater risks of negative sexual health
consequences. Adolescents should be given the opportunity to receive the proper sexual education
in order to eliminate negative sexual health consequences. Researchers have found that individuals
in sexual education programs that address traditional social norms and the effects of these beliefs,
are less likely to agree with hegemonic masculinity

Relationship Between Catullus And Lesbia
Option 2: Catullus and Lesbia s Relationship
Introduction
Lesbia is the subject of Catullus s most passionate and seemingly sincere poems. The relationship
between Catullus and Lesbia is tumultuous to say the least. His poems about Lesbia and their
relationship display a wide range of emotions which change from a relationship of tenderness and
love, to one of uncertainty, to one of sorrow and disappointment. They rapidly fall in and out of
love with another. Their affections for one another are fickle and constantly changing. They have a
mercurial kind of love. Catullus obviously loved Lesbia deeply, but he also feels intense dislike,
disappointment and contempt towards her. Through it all, it seems as though Catullus longs for

illness, to see and hear Lesbia talking to another man ravishes his senses, causing his ears to
ring, his eyes to go black and fire to snake through his limbs. Catullus expresses his suffering in
physical terms. The symptoms he lists indicate an intense psychological state of anxiety He has
become jealous of a man who is interacting with her. He describes his feelings of agony when he
sees her. The relationship at this point is not reciprocal. Catullus describes how her presence
leaves him feeling weak and speechless. Once again he is besotted with her. Catullus describes
how dense darkness blinds him when he sees Lesbia. The darkness here may be the blind love
that many experience when they are madly in love with someone to the point that they cannot
see their faults. He also warns himself against leisure for he knows that brooding over her will
only lead to his demise. Otium is dangerous only so far as Catullus is concerned. It is not bad in
itself but because of the use to which Catullus puts it, he has gone beyond the proper bounds. He
uses his otium to think about Lesbia, but he goes too far and is brought to suffer. The exemplum of
lines 15 16 underscores this pain: otium has destroyed even kings and cities; it can destroy
Catullus, too. There is no humor

How Does Human Stasis Affect Human Space Travel
Research Question: How will human stasis affect human space travel? Mars is there, waiting to
be reached. This is a quote by Buzz Aldrin, an astronaut on Apollo 11 along with Neil Armstrong,
that explains a global interest with the unknown and especially humans traveling to outer space,
more specifically: Mars. But the same question is asked over and over again by scientist all over
the world: How do we get there ? This question has been mainly contemplated since 1969 and
even sooner for some groups. Most of the ideas brought to the national aerospace agencies are
related to building a better space ship or stronger engines. But the achilles heel of all of these
plans are the same two things, cost and efficiency. Currently, sending four people to Mars is an
estimated at six billion U.S Dollars which many countries are not willing or able to spend. This
estimate is also conservative assuming everything is on time, budget, and in good working order.

Benefits Of Being A Police Officer
Being a police officer is a physically and mentally strenuous job. The purpose of physical
education training is to ensure that, police officers are in good shape to handles the stresses
they are exposed to every day in their line of work. Physical fitness is especially vital in law
enforcement due to two main reasons. First, physical fitness is necessary for active duty, as
officers must be in excellent physical conditions to chase offenders and break up brawls in bars
(Papazoglou Andersen, 2014). Second, policeofficers need physical exercisefor longevity.
According to recent studies, the average age of an American is 72 years (Papazoglou Andersen,

Seeking the services of certified fitness trainers prevents police officers from getting injuries during
training. In addition, it allows them to get into the best shape possible within the shortest time. Law
enforcement organizations can also encourage self directed training among their staff to encourage
officers to enroll in gyms and keep fit even when they are not in the workplace.
I believe that physical training education is an important aspect of officer preparation. I have
seen cases in which police officers have been able to escape death or save civilians from a similar
fate only because they were physically fit and quick to react. For instance, I once saw a police
officer dive in front of an oncoming bus to save a four year old boy from being run over. He was
only able to save the boy s life because he was in good shape. Moreover, it is common to see
police officers dodging bullets skillfully during public shootouts and apprehend criminals; this
requires them to be in good physical shape. This shows that physical education training is very
important in law enforcement.
Lastly, physical education training seeks to improve the community as a whole. It aims at
producing police officers who can handle the strenuous tasks of their job efficiently, protecting the
public more effectively. In addition, it reduces the rate of unhealthiness in the society. In such a
manner, it is a very important part of officer training. Furthermore, it exercises the

who were both parents and paid workers, 1% were parents and care takers, and 2% were paid

Daughter Of Smoke And Bone Summary
Reading Response #3: Daughter of Smoke and Bone, Making Connections Questioning
Daughter of Smoke and Bone is a fantasy book written by author Laini Taylor.
On the back of the book, as well as in the official plot summary, DOSAB is described as a story of
angels and demons, so I expected something about Heaven, Hell, etc. I typically don t enjoy books
based on religious mythology, but I had heard some good things about DOSAB, so I decided to
give it a shot. Based on the synopsis I had read, I was prepared for a book that fell into the same
categories as the disastrous Hush, Hush and Fallen series . The category being: Books I Have
Read But Will Live Until My Dying Day Swearing Up And Down I Never Touched. Other notable
books in this category include The Uglies series and Twilight.
Needless to say, my expectations were not high, but they could have been as tall as the CN
Tower and DOSAB would still have blown me away. Laini Taylor s beautiful writing strips the
overused angel and demon trope down to its bare bones and spins it into something new.
Morphing it into its own enthralling genre. To say this book is all about angels and demons would
be a severe injustice. To say this book is all about the mythology would be an injustice. This book
is about growing up, prejudice, truth, overcoming hardship and war. ... Show more content on

My head was bursting at the seams with raw emotion. Every emotion. What are you, Daughter of
Smoke and Bone? I thought. It had been a long time since I had read a book so thought
provoking and well written. DOSAB was also the first book in which the plot was so intricate and
thought out, with so many implications and subplots, that I had to take a moment after reading to
comprehend everything. My mind was so overrun, that for the first time I wasn t comprehending
what I was reading, as I was reading it. As you might guess, I ended up doing a lot of thinking

Evil In Augustine s Theodicy
Evil, a thing we all fear that comes in many shapes and sizes, the most malevolent being in the
universe. Why is it here, why does it exist? We can all give examples of evil actions, people,
things, and places that we as a society believe are truly evil, but it is important to understand where
did we conceived these ideas. Theodicyis defined as the many different views on the existence of
evil, but we must go more in depth in order to correctly define what is good and bad. Evil is known
to be the source of bad and God, the creator of heaven and earth, the divine being, is the counter
opposite of evil. If God is an omnipresent being, who is omni benevolent, why does evil exist on
his earth in such extensive ways? An atheist may argue is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In Rebellion , Ivan speaks of the cruel suffering of children and reverts back to Adam and Eve
eating the forbidden fruit. He states that adults ate the apple and that little children have not eaten
anything and are not yet guilty of anything (Dostoevsky, 238). From this, the question arises, if
children are not guilty of anything, why too do they suffer? Augustine s theodicy of original sin
could be applied to this question in search for an answer, but these children were too young to
understand free will. Most children, unlike adults, do not know how to fight for themselves. It is
hard to distinguish how children can they choose to disobey God orders if they were never even
taught how to follow him. Little, young, innocent children subjected to horrific tortures, such as the
five year old girl, who was punished for wetting the bed. She was forced to have her face smeared
with her excrements and then having her eat the excrements (Dostoevsky, 242). Knowing that these
kinds of events occur could make even the most religious individual question why God would allow
this kind of suffering to happen to an innocent

Analysis Of No Pda !
Emotions No PDA! I will continue to hear through out my day when I went from class to class at
the midst of passing period during high school and middle school. I never knew what teachers
meant by saying that until they would start to get on my case about showing some affection to the
girlfriend I had at that time. That was when I learned that PDA abbreviates Public Display of
Affection and one of the first times I learned an American display rule. At the same time, I believe
some manners may contribute to the display rules. Then, the topic of it is unmanly for a man to
show their emotions. The other discussion about holding in anger opposed to expressing it. I
believe there are limitations to how menshow their emotions, but I do believe that men should be
able to show their emotions. Also, anyone should be able express his or her emotions instead of
holding it and letting it all come out all at once. First, Some of the American display rules are
manners. As an example, when I was younger I was taught it is unacceptable to belch and not say
excuse me at the table with even if the situation is accidental. My motherwould poke arm or pinch
my arm as punishment until I would say those majestic words to make my arm stop hurting. I
completely understand why burping at without saying excuse me is unacceptable now. No one
wants to hear anyone else let out gas in any way. It may have a disgusting same that follows it, and
is so unexpected that the belch may offend someone.

Similarities Between The Solider And Dulce Et Decorum Est
The Solider by Rupert Brooke and Dulce et decorum Est by Wilfred Owen, are two poems
written during the time of World War One (WW1). Both poems are an example of each authors
perception on war, Owens being about the spiteful reality and Brookes about the glory of dying
one s country. Although they are two very different perspectives both are based around the horrors
of war and the unimaginable amount of deaths that WW1 had caused. There are numerous amounts
of similarities between the two poems Dulce et Decorum Est and The Soldier . Throughout The
Soldier Brooke revels the fact that fighting in war for the sole purpose of defending ones country is
courageous, he supports this act by writing And think, this heart, all evil shed... Show more content

In the first stanza of Dulce et Decorum Est , the reader is instantly drawn in with Bent double .
This gives the poem a feeling of immediacy which is then followed up by a detailed description
of what is to come. Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs/ Men marched asleep/ Many
had lost their boots but limped on. The reader is yet again, drawn into the graphic scene of war.
The alliteration Knock kneed emphasises the battle weariness of the soldiers and intensifies the
way they depicted war. Owen creates rhythm throughout the stanza by littering the poem with
pauses. He uses this technique in the line All went blind; Drunk with fatigue; death even to the
hoots Of tired . Owen makes the scene more vivid by bringing in his own involvement to war
with we cursed through the sludge , he uses the term sludge to help capture the agony which was
being experienced by the soldiers. The Soldier is one of numerous poems written at the
beginning of war (before Dulce et Decorum Est ) to attract naive young men who believed
enrolling in war would be an exciting adventure allowing them to travel the world. Brooke
welcomes death in his sonnet and expresses that he feels privileged to have been raised in
England, believing it was a blessing. In the first stanza, Brooke gives the impression of England
being a tranquil country, in which he feels honoured to be English. If I should die, think

First Continental Congress Essay example
The First Continental Congress The American dream is built upon a foundation of struggles and
gains, along with more struggles. A look back to early American History provides one with a
timeline that seems endless and full of surprises. The First Continental Congress serves as one of
those timeline markers and is a great example of the American way. Being one of the first meetings
ever between the colonists, The First Continental Congresslaid one of the first bricks into the
foundation of America.
The First Continental Congress made its mark in history on September 5,1774 in Philadelphia s
Carpenters Hall. According to the u s history.com website, The idea of such a meeting was
advanced a year earlier by Benjamin Franklin, but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Independence was not the issue at this meeting, rather the members in Congress sought to right the
wrongs that the colonies had endured. Along with that redemption, the members of the First
Continental Congress sought to gain a voice in London, something they were denied of.
One cannot truly grasp the magnitude of this Continental Congress until we look at the prominent
figures in attendance during this time. There were 55 delegates in Carpenter s Hall but perhaps the
most prominent figures include, George Washington, Samuel Adams, John Adams, Patrick Henry,
Richard Henry Lee, John Jay and John Dickinson. The delegates were mainly those of high social
standing and many made their living in the fields of trade, farming and law. Communication
between the colonies was very minimal, therefore many delegates were meeting for the first time
and all would have different opinions and issues.
Members of the First Continental Congress did not suffer from lack of communication, as The first
few weeks were consumed in discussion and debate. The colonies had always, up to this time, acted
as independent entities. With that many delegates had to overcome distrust and learn to work as a
whole body rather than individuals with different agendas.
The agenda at the First Continental Congress was not completely clear in the eyes of the delegates.
Leadership, during this time, was crucial and once this issue was

The Matter Of Dark Matter
Dark Matter Some scientists now believe it is not the matter we see, but the matter that hides in the
dark that holds the true secrets of the universe. There is a mysterious dark matter that binds stars
and galaxies together, and this matter might be made up of WIMPS, MACHOS, and axions.
Physicists continue searching for dark matter, and particles that make up dark matter. Dark matter
has strange characteristics and behaves quite differently from ordinary matter. Understanding dark
matter is essential to understanding how the universe behaves. Scientists assume that dark matter
is real. Gravitational theory requires dark matter to explain why our universe looks the way it
does. Without dark matter in the galaxies, the circular force of the galaxies would push stars out
of their orbits and off into space. Scientists also assume dark matter is plentiful. Scientists theorize
that there should be five or six times more dark matter than the matter we now detect. Scientists
also theorize that dark matter must be made up of particles that obey all or some of the known
laws of physics.
Scientists have hypothesized that surrounding most galaxies are huge amounts of matter called
dark matter. Dark matter is matter that is invisible and does not emit light, heat or radio waves.
Dark matter does not interact with ordinary matter, and possibly billions of dark matter particles
pass through ordinary matter every minute (Hawking 186 188). Dark matter holds galaxies, stars,
and solar

Who Is Cardiovascular System For Steady State Exercise (...
he cardiovascular system responses to steady state exercise (P4 and M2)
Heart rate is the number of times a person s heart beats per minute. When you are preforming a
type of exercise that will increase your heart rate, then your heart will pump blood all around your
body faster and especially to muscles that are working the most because they require the most
oxygen because of the intensity they are working at. It is vital to take your resting heart rate and the
normal heart rate is 60 100bpm. For example, our cardiovascular exercise was cycling on a
stationary bike for 20 minutes at a reasonable pace and this will depend on whether your heart rate
will increase at a slow, fast or steady rate. However, the first 5 minutes we cycled at a very fast pace
in order for your heart to pump more blood all around the body and to the required muscles in
order for them to work harder. But the response is that the heart rate levels off, which means that it
becomes steady so that after beginning the exercise and you re like 5 minutes into it then your
heart rate will stay the same or increase by little bits unless you change the intensity all the time
which is not required when doing cardiovascular exercises.
Stroke volume is the amount of blood pumped by the left ventricle and this is measured in mL
/beats. The average resting stroke volume is 70 mL/beat and this is best measured when you wake
up because you are at you re at full rest meaning you have done nothing to increase your

It s another wheelgun! But unlike its first 10mm offering from last fall, the Super Redhawk, it has
the potential of appealing to a greater swath of the revolver shooting public. The GP100 Match
Champion is the decked out iteration of the company s popular double action revolver line. And
should provide a rather versatile platform to launch Col. Jeff Cooper s snappy and resurgent round.
If anything, it gives 10mm fans a carry and competition option if they have a yen for cylinders over

Katie Otto from American Housewife

When you think of great moms throughout television past they exhibit the same list of endearing
qualities. They are smart, strong and very loving. Moms in television presently also have those
qualities but they have evolved. Real moms today are typically balancing a full time career, a family
and a social life. Katie Otto, from the show American Housewife, possess numerous qualities
millennial mothers can relate to by simply being her imperfect self in a community of perfect
cookie cutter moms. As you can tell from the title of the show, Katie is a housewife and stay at
home mom. She and her husband Greg have three children, Taylor, Oliver and Anna Kat. Greg is a
college professor in the stuffy town of Westport where they rent a modest home and drive a mini
van. The Westport community is a rich one; mansions and luxury cars surround the Otto s.
Needless to say they do not exactly fit in. That might bother some moms but not Katie, she doesn t
try to be someone she is not.
She is quick witted, confident and unapologetic which doesn t boast well with the other moms in
town. She doesn t care about material things or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

telling her. (Season 2, Episode 2 Boar Dain ) Katie tried to make him return the barbeque but
when she was told she wasn t being supportive she tried to get onboard. He went to buy a pig and
didn t realize it was a live pig. Instead of slaughtering it though, he brought it home and it became
the family pet, they named it Hans Gruber. In the end he ended up telling her she was

Poetry Close Reading
The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner written by Randall Jarrell is a poem that introduces three
major ideas in only five lines. These ideas are birth, death, and war. Jarrell is able to accomplish a
lot in this short poem by using diction and syntax such as metaphor and figurative language. The
title of the poem automatically shifts the reader s mind to expect a poem about war and death.
However, after reading the title and seeing how clear it is, when taken literally, line one of the
poem is very confusing. If we try to understand the poem at a basic literal level, here s what s
happening: There is a gunner in the ball turret, underneath a bomber plane. It is so cold up high
that the lining of his wet jacket is being ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The speaker s life before war is left far below and even feels like an illusion. Like a dream, it is
gone. When the speaker woke to black flak and the nightmare fighters , he woke up to his worst
nightmare, enemy fighters approaching the bomber. If we take a close look at lines three and
four together, there is a stark contrast. Line three is very peaceful and serene, the words dream ,
life , and earth usually have positive connotations; while line four is certain death, with words
like nightmare and black flak . The last line of the poem is very straightforward, and is almost
prose. It tells us exactly what we need to know. When the bomber got back to the base, they
cleaned the speakers remains out of the turret with a hose. If we continue the metaphor of the
bomber being the mother, we can conclude that the speaker is being born into death through the
womb of the State . The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner by Randall Jarrell is able to accomplish
so many thing with so little lines mainly through the use of metaphor and diction. It explains the
terrors of wars in gruesome detail and explains the ways in which wars, in a sense breed and birth
death. To some, this poem is seen as the ultimate poem of war, and rightly

Essay on Gimpel the Fool
Gimpel the Fool An Explication of Singer s Gimpel the Fool
The story Gimpel the Fool is written in first person point of view; and the narrator, Gimpel, is
the main character in the story. In the opening paragraph in the story Singer shows how reliable
of a narrator that Gimpel is. Gimpel shares many of the nicknames he has had given to him in
school, including imbecile, donkey, flax head, dope, glump, ninny, and fool. He then says that
he was considered a fool because he was easily taken in. He gave an example of one of the
situations that earned him that title. They said, Gimpel, you know the rabbi s wife has been
brought to childbed? So I skipped school. Well, it turned out to be a lie. How was I supposed to? She

He also gives you insight on his thought process, which is very open and unguarded. After his
second example of foolishness Gimpel says, I was no weakling. If I slapped someone he d see all
the way to Cracow. But I m really not a slugger by nature. I think to myself, Let it pass. So they
take advantage of me. These are not words of a fool, but they are words of a very trusting and
reliable character.
Gimpel is made to be a protagonist character in the opening paragraph. Singer kind of makes you
feel sorry for him with the stories of the other kids being mean to him in school. That combined
with his rigorous honesty, you find yourself sympathizing for Gimpel. Singer makes Gimpel out to
be an innocent soul that is taken advantage of for the other children s amusement and
entertainment. By doing this Singer makes the other children antagonist characters. In a way the
children are lumped together to be one character; kind of like Gimpel s nemesis. Singer uses a
couple of different ways to create the character Gimpel. First of all he uses what other characters
say about him and do to him. As we know the other kids at school say he is a fool, and take
advantage of him for their own entertainment. I don t think that this was used make him into a
foolish character. I think it was used to make Gimpel into a victim, a sympathetic character. Next,
the narrator s descriptions of himself do a big part of creating his

  • 2. Early American Music Research Paper One aspect of American history that has remained constant is the development of its music. American music has always been a building block of American history, constantly changing along with the country. In the beginning of what would soon become our great country, the migration of European immigrants was a very heavy influence on American culture, lifestyle, and musicat the time. In the beginning stages of the colonization of America, European religious views were very present and, the birth of early American sacred music was born out of this time of religious exploration. With many people attempting to convert others, the music they used portrayed often their views and approaches to these attempts. One of the groups of people doing this were the Shaker community, they had a belief of shaking off their sins, the music they used in their services represented the belief of that activity. With very up tempo music and a heavy Dance feel to it, they used this music to encourage the idea of shaking off their sins and all ungodly things. Not long after the occurrence of the religious revival in the new American colonies, the composing of American hymns started with William... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During that era of hardship, many new genres of music were being born, from political broadside ballads to minstrel songs. At a time when the country was split in two, the music of that time was also pulled back and forth over the battle line. This was present in the song My Maryland . The original song was published as the state song for Maryland and in support for the Union, but soon after it was revised by some Maryland residents who were in support of the Confederate army. They took the original My Maryland song and altered some of the lyrics to show their views of opposition toward The Union. This course of action replays repeatedly throughout American history in future genres of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Mistranslation And Mistranslation In The Joy Luck Club Mistranslation was a reoccurring theme in the book, The Joy Luck Club. There were frequent scenarios when characters could not understand each other properly due to mistranslation and miscommunication. Jing Mei has trouble understanding her mother in the following excerpt: It s not showoff. She said the two soups were almost the same, chabudwo. Or maybe she said butong, not the same thing at all. It was one of those Chinese expressions that means the better half of mixed intentions. I can never remember things I didn t understand in the first place. Jing Mei cannot fully understand her mothers intended meanings to a multitude of conversations due to this. Waverly Jong had a certain run in with the language barrier as well. Aii ya. So shame be with mother? She grasped my hand even tighter as she glared at me. I looked down. It s not that, it s just so obvious. It s just so embarrassing. Embarrass you be my daughter? Her voice was cracking with anger. That s not what I meant. That s not what I said. Waverly is trying her best to explain to her mother that she does not want her mother to say that she is her daughter to every person she meets and the underlying feel of becoming a trophy for her mother. Her mother has difficulty understanding this and she gets angry at her daughter. This miscommunication escalates the hurt feelings felt between both parties. This theme of mistranslation can be found everywhere in the current world. In the article Language Matters: How a Minor Mistranslation Can Affect US China Relations the author goes on to talk about how the U.S. mistranslated a small portion of the Chinese spokesman s comments. He goes on to explain how these stories affected the United States of America. He says: These stories led Sebastian Gorka, a top official on the U.S. National Security Council, to deride China s statement by pointing out that the islands can be seen on Google Earth. Gorka then went on to decry China s territorial expansionism. Gorka s broadcast was heard by the nation and some peoples ideas might have been swayed that the Chinese are bad. This relates to the The Joy Luck Club in one way particular, the idea that the smallest miscommunication problems can lead to a huge ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Shooting An Elephant By George Orwell Shooting an Elephant The short story Shooting an Elephant by George Orwell describes Orwell s experience as a police officer of a town in the British colony of Burma. George Orwell, a military occupier in the Burmese land is much hated by the civilians. The hatred he receives from the locals makes him despise the British Empires mistreatment on the Burmese people. However, he also resents the locals in the village for revolting against him, for he is only a worker of the British Empire. Shooting an Elephant by George Orwelldiscusses the author s views and experience on peer pressure through the structure, quality, and applicability of the information shared. The incident that took place was when a domesticated elephant escaped from its chains, and was causing harm to the villagers and their property. The mahout a caretaker of the elephant went searching towards a different route which happened to be 12 hours away; the only solution in stopping this berserk elephant was by shooting it. George Orwell, the police officer who works in Moulmein, Burmawas conflicted upon shooting or not shooting at the elephant. Orwell felt pressured by the villagers when confronting the elephant. As he walked towards the field, a large sum of the village was following close by. The villagers felt a wave of excitement as they saw the gun in Orwell s hand; to witness the killing of the elephant was seen as a joyous celebration in their eyes. The villager s excitement in witnessing the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Analysis Of Perseverance By Maya Angelou Perseverance You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it (Maya Angelou). In all the nonfiction books read in class perseverance is the main concept in each story. The dictionary defines perseverance as continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition : the action or condition or an instance of persevering . Coach Thomas known as Ed demonstrated perseverance towards his family, friends, and his AP football team. Ed always pushed the boys to their best ability and never treated anyone negatively. He not only was a coach he was a role model, inspiration, and a leader to the entire community. Each individual wanted to make an impact on everyone s life. Nonfiction literature represents the understanding of perseverance and connects to influencing readers by doing anything, no matter the difficulty of achieving a certain goal and connects an individual by behavioral traits and feelings they have. Melba Pattillo Beals in Warriors Don t Cry demonstrates how she never gave up and looked at all the positives. Nine students including Melba immigrated a school system, but did not get treated well. While the nine students wanted to give up they did not let anyone stop them and kept going back to school. A large crowd of jeering, pencil throwing students hovered around us menacingly. • 6. The Plan For Implementing Phase Preparation Essay PC, as requested please find some options that can be made available to the government since its announcement to sell certain assets in the 2014 Budget. These options based on the assumption that selling of these assets may not materialized next year. Most of the information provided is based on qualitative analysis due to lack of information received. Background With the 2014 Government Budget now shift towards implementing phase preparation, one of the main challenges for the government now is the realization of its estimated revenue, particularly from the sale of government assets worth $475.2 million, equivalent to 17.5 percent of estimated revenue. This sale of assets is commonly known as privatization , thus involved the selling of some government owned and operated businesses to private enterprises. Total revenue for 2014 is estimated at $2,721.8 million (32.9% of GDP), with a total expenditure of $2,883.3 million (34.8% of GDP). The overall net deficit is estimated around $161.5 million, equivalent to 1.9 percent of GDP. Excluding sale of government assets, total revenue is estimated to decline to around $2,246.6 million (27% of GDP), with overall net deficit increased to $636.7 million, equivalent to 7.7 percent of GDP. Moreover, assuming 60 percent of asset salesis realized in 2014, the overall net deficit should be around 5.4 percent of GDP. • 7. A Modest Proposal A Satire In 1757 Jonathan Swift wrote A Modest Proposal; a satire telling the public that the answer to the economic problem was to eat their own children (Lynch). According to Merriam Webster, satire is trenchant wit, irony, or sarcasm used to expose and discredit vice or folly ( Satire ). Satire uses humor, exaggeration, parody, and ridicule to expose folly in society or a person and advocates for some sort of change. Satireis broken into three different forms: Juvenalian, Horatian, and Menippean satire. Satire is typically thought of as funny or humorous, but this assumption only covers Horatian or Menippean satire; this leaves out Juvenalian. Juvenalian satire is a harsh satire. It bombards vice with ridicule and contempt by bringing to light... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Satire always has a purpose. If a reader truly wants to understand, the Why? has to be asked. Behind every work of satire, there is a why. The writer wants the readers to read his or her work and leave with a desire to change. A Modest Proposalby Jonathan Swift is, again, an example of this. To the casual reader, it would seem that Swift was writing a horrible proposal. He or she may even pick up on the fact that his satire is Juvenalian satire and the techniques he used but without the Why? the purpose is lost. Swift saw the pitiful situation that the Irish people were in and he also saw that at least part of it was self inflicted. The Irish people were just letting the English subject them to high taxing and oppression, and Swift could see this. The purpose of him writing A Modest Proposal was to get the Irish people to do something about their circumstances. He shocked his readers in having this realization. The purpose of the satire is the most important part of any satire. The writer is advocating for a change from people, usually for the better. The techniques and methods are just different pathways the writer can take on his or her road to voicing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Case Of Frost V Chief Constable Of South Yorkshire Police In the case of Frost v Chief Constable of South Yorkshire Police [1999] Lord Steyn stated that the area of Tort Law relating to psychiatric trauma is rather complex. In order for the claimant to successfully recover compensation the court needs to consider an amalgam of rules and exceptions as well as different categories of claimants, which can, at times, be hard to identify and justify. Critically discuss this statement considering the development in this area of Tort Law. Is the current distinction of primary and secondary victim justifiable? Is this area of law currently coherent and efficient? This essay aims to provide a critical discussion of the common law of the current development of negligently inflicted psychiatric injury or illness previously known as nervous shock and the development and history in this area of tort law, while awarding damages for negligently inflicted injury and looking at the distinction between primary and secondary victim when claiming damages and why it is said to be complex. Psychiatric injury, also known as nervous shock has been perceived to have a complex criteria and principles that have to be met before one can claim for damages. Claims for nervous shock have been seen to have adopted an illogical approach leading to unfairness in order to prevent an open to the floodgates for many flatulent psychiatric injury and illness claims. • 11. Disadvantages Of Technology And Media Impacts of Technology and Media Baym (2015), Murthy (2013), and Andrejevic (2013) together demonstrate the advantages and disadvantages that technology and media have on today s society. These three authors provide multiple thoughts that relate to each other, but also have different outlooks on many other points. Social mediaallows the immediate spread of information. While Twitter has negative effects on humans, some research shows that there it is possible to have positive outcomes as well. Murthy (2013) focuses on how Twitter has helped shape communication in today s world. Unlike most social media sites, Twitter uses a 140 character count to ensure messages are concise. Translating complex thoughts into just one hundred or so words can be challenging for most, but the message will turn out just as powerful, if not more. Baym (2015) stated that new technologycould have a positive impact on families In the context of contemporary digital media, the hope remains that new communication technologies will bring families and loved ones together (p. 41). For example, if a child had something to say to their parents that was very important, they might feel more comfortable doing it through technology. People find it easier to text or post something rather than saying it face to face because it gives people more time to choose the perfect wording. Once a person say something verbally, there is no delete key to take back the words that were said. New forms of technology and media are being used without forethought, which is causing mania, panic, and misinformation. Baym (2013) proposes different theories to support the various consequences of machines. Technological determinism being one of her perspectives, argues that machines change humans (Baym, 2015, p. 27). An example of machines altering humans would be the constant desire to have the newest technological device. Not only is it a negative aspect to be controlled by machines, but it can also be detrimental to the human character to believe that in order to function properly one must have the most advanced machine by their side. Similarly to Baym (2015), Andrejevic (2013) discusses the dangers of infoglut in today s society. Infoglut ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. The Roman Medicine Mens sana in corpore sano (Juvenal 10.356). A healthy mind in a healthy body, the Ancient Romans lived by this motto. The Ancient Romans believed that the health of the people was key to success in war and in creating a prosperous empire. Roman texts that have been gathered overtime have greatly influenced modern medical practices and without them, modern medicinewould not be as advanced as it is today. The Ancient Romans learned numerous details about the human body and applied their knowledge in ways that were superior compared to other cultures occupying the time period. Roman medicine was advanced for its time because the Romans adopted advanced methods from Ancient Greek medicine, they organized architecture for the sake of public health, and because of their vast knowledge of disease, herbs, and medical tools. The Romans would not have acquired an interest in medicine if it weren t for early Greek influence. Around 500 BC, the Romans and the Greeks first came in contact with each other and by 146 B.C. a large portion of Greece had become a province of the Roman Empire. With the exposure to Greek traditions, the Romans began to obtain information from the Greeks, but only based their own ideas on Greek findings. Greek ideas were considered to be impractical and inferior to Roman ideas, which were always centered on bringing success to the empire. Once the Roman Empire expanded into Greece, many Greek doctors travelled to Rome. The Greeks brought with them new ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. Essay on Women s Roles in Greek Society The Iliad uncovers the truth behind what Greeks believed to be the role of women in society. The Greek goddesses and the mortal women represent two sides that women had in society. The Greek goddesses held power over the war, whereas, the mortal women are there as prizes or timГ©. Aphrodite is the prime example of a goddess who held a lot of power, mainly by using manipulation, in the Trojan War. Helenrepresents the quintessential idea of a woman representing timГ©. These two portrayals of women in Greek society depict how people recognized women s role in society, with Aphrodite representing a woman with power as a manipulative goddess and Helen representing a woman who was merely timГ©, a prize to be obtained. Aphrodite is a symbol of that view of women in Greek society; however, Aphrodite not only uses her power of manipulation against men, but also against women. Aphrodite manipulates Helen in order to serve her needs. Helen is used as an unwilling tool of Aphrodite s ambition (Allan 149). Helen is controlled from the beginning by Aphrodite, who causes Helen to fall in love with Paris. F.J. Groten discussed that Helen went with Paris because she was under the spell of Aphrodite; Helen was deprived of her judgement and surrendered herself to the charms of Paris (36). In Book III, when Paris comes back from a duel with Menelaus, Aphrodite goes to Helen to tell her to go to bed with Paris. When Helen refuses, Aphrodite threatens her exclaiming, Cease to provoke me, lest I make thee more, the world s aversion, than their love before; now the bright prize for which mankind engage, than, the sad victim, of the public rage (The Iliad 105). Helen has no choice but to comply with Aphrodite s commands because Aphrodite is telling Helen to obey or she will make all people hate her. Aphrodite needs Helen to sleep with Paris because Aphrodite must keep Paris happy to maintain her end of the deal, which was to give him Helen in love. She is also taunting Hera and Athena with her power and ability to control the situation. Aphrodite brings out the manipulative trait that men see in women during this time period. His Russian roots influenced him greatly throughout his career, writing compositions that reflected his life and Russia itself. The symbol of Spring to them represents their new year such as a revival of the crops and fams that was crucial to living. Emboding the new beginnings, t Born on June 17, 1882 in Oranienbaum, Russia, Igor Stravinsky was raised in St. Petersburg by his father and mother. Family already with a muscial background, Stravinsky did not want to pursue the same career as his father and mother. While attending the University of St. Petersburg, Stravinsky met Nikolai Rimsky Korsakov who changed his mind from studying law to become a music composer. After the arrival of the first World War, Stravinsky along with his wife and children fled from Russia. Stravinsky then proceeded to travel the world with his music. • 15. Compare Beowulf Is An Epic Hero Archetypes Epic Hero This essay is going to be comparing how the character Beowulf and Roy Hobbs are alike and different. Statistics show that there is a lot of similarities between these two reads and both a great example of an Epic Hero archetype. They both show strong characteristics of a Epic Hero but are different people in general and their goals or priorities in what they are trying to accomplish are completely different. Beowulfhas strength like no other. He is your typical epic hero . He Saves the day in a majestic and seeming to be an impossible epic way. Like for a couple examples of his strength is how he ripped off grendel s arm when he tried to run away. No normal person would be able to do that. Another example is when he picked up the mighty sword when he slew grendel s motheras everyone was appalled by his strength. Beowulf is a very good example of an epic hero. He Is very strong and it seems like he does a lot stuff that is not possible and is a very good leader and persuasive. People follow in his footsteps because he is a great influence on the people. The distribution of the test statistic under the null hypothesis is derived from the assumptions identified previously. Common test statistics may follow the following distributions: Normal, Student T, and Chi Square. This distribution separates the possible values of the estimatorinto two categories: values for which the null hypothesis is accepted or rejected. The region for which we accept the null hypothesis is called the critical region and the area underneath the curve that corresponds to the critical region is known as the level of confidence. Hence, we can develop a confidence interval for which we can see the lowest and highest point of the critical region. Any observed sample mean that lies outside of this confidence interval (outside the critical region) would cause us to reject the null hypothesis in favor of the alternative hypothesis. The area of the rejection region is known as the level of significance and represents type I error (alpha) corresponding to the probability that a true null hypothesis is rejected (as opposed to type II error beta; the probability of accepting a false null hypothesis). Essentially, hypothesis testing calls for comparing a test statistic to the critical value of the test statistic. If this test statistic is greater than the critical value of the test statistic, we will reject the null hypothesis in favor of the alternative hypothesis. If ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Through the analysis and biblical relation of plot points and scenes in Equus, the true essence of the story is revealed; not only is Equus a story of mental illness and sexuality, but it is also a parable of sorts, showing biblical passages and stories in a different and more relatable light. Having sexual education available to youth is the key in reducing the number of unwanted situations in the sexual health of the individuals. Teaching adolescents about sex is beneficial because they become aware of consequence that might follow specific actions. This is a chance to ensure adolescents take safer routes when deciding to become sexually active. Youth sexual education has been correlated with preventing unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Many schools have sexual education programs but many teenage pregnancies that are unplanned and STIs are occurring. One reason could be because very few of these sexual education programs are attending to the traditional social norms around sexuality and gender. It is important to consider and focus on the traditional social norms because findings in previous studies have found those that hold traditional social beliefs around gender and sexuality, are at greater risks of negative sexual health consequences. Adolescents should be given the opportunity to receive the proper sexual education in order to eliminate negative sexual health consequences. For instance, I once saw a police officer dive in front of an oncoming bus to save a four year old boy from being run over. He was only able to save the boy s life because he was in good shape. Moreover, it is common to see police officers dodging bullets skillfully during public shootouts and apprehend criminals; this requires them to be in good physical shape. This shows that physical education training is very important in law enforcement. Lastly, physical education training seeks to improve the community as a whole. It aims at producing police officers who can handle the strenuous tasks of their job efficiently, protecting the public more effectively. In addition, it reduces the rate of unhealthiness in the society. In such a manner, it is a very important part of officer training. Furthermore, it exercises the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Work life balance will vary for each person and will change throughout life. The studies focused on the occupancy of three roles: parental status, informal caring and paid work. It showed that 7% of people experienced caring for someone, 50% were parents and 66% were in some type of paid work. The data for dual roles played by them were as follows; 34% who were both parents and paid workers, 1% were parents and care takers, and 2% were paid workers and care takers. 2% of the individuals in the survey played all three roles, and 18.7% of the individuals had no role to play. It shows that only a small proportion of individuals in midlife combined paid work with consistent care giving or other multiple role configurations. It was found that men and women equally faced the multiple roles. Women were also likely to hold some of the more intense roles than their male counter parts. There is a growing recognition by policymakers of the importance of supporting individuals in juggling work and family life, as reflected in the British government s launch in 2000 of the Work Life Balance Campaign. This aims to encourage employers to introduce more flexible work practices in order to facilitate workers reaching a better equilibrium between work and other spheres of their life (e.g., child or adult caring responsibilities, as well as other interests). Although the number of companies offering flexible working practices in Britain is growing, it is relatively small compared ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 38. Daughter Of Smoke And Bone Summary Reading Response #3: Daughter of Smoke and Bone, Making Connections Questioning Daughter of Smoke and Bone is a fantasy book written by author Laini Taylor. On the back of the book, as well as in the official plot summary, DOSAB is described as a story of angels and demons, so I expected something about Heaven, Hell, etc. I typically don t enjoy books based on religious mythology, but I had heard some good things about DOSAB, so I decided to give it a shot. Based on the synopsis I had read, I was prepared for a book that fell into the same categories as the disastrous Hush, Hush and Fallen series . The category being: Books I Have Read But Will Live Until My Dying Day Swearing Up And Down I Never Touched. Other notable books in this category include The Uglies series and Twilight. Needless to say, my expectations were not high, but they could have been as tall as the CN Tower and DOSAB would still have blown me away. Laini Taylor s beautiful writing strips the overused angel and demon trope down to its bare bones and spins it into something new. Morphing it into its own enthralling genre. To say this book is all about angels and demons would be a severe injustice. To say this book is all about the mythology would be an injustice. This book is about growing up, prejudice, truth, overcoming hardship and war. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... My head was bursting at the seams with raw emotion. Every emotion. Augustine s theodicy of original sin could be applied to this question in search for an answer, but these children were too young to understand free will. Along with that redemption, the members of the First Continental Congress sought to gain a voice in London, something they were denied of. One cannot truly grasp the magnitude of this Continental Congress until we look at the prominent figures in attendance during this time. There were 55 delegates in Carpenter s Hall but perhaps the most prominent figures include, George Washington, Samuel Adams, John Adams, Patrick Henry, Richard Henry Lee, John Jay and John Dickinson. The delegates were mainly those of high social standing and many made their living in the fields of trade, farming and law. Communication between the colonies was very minimal, therefore many delegates were meeting for the first time and all would have different opinions and issues. Members of the First Continental Congress did not suffer from lack of communication, as The first few weeks were consumed in discussion and debate. The colonies had always, up to this time, acted as independent entities. With that many delegates had to overcome distrust and learn to work as a whole body rather than individuals with different agendas. There is a mysterious dark matter that binds stars and galaxies together, and this matter might be made up of WIMPS, MACHOS, and axions. Physicists continue searching for dark matter, and particles that make up dark matter. Dark matter has strange characteristics and behaves quite differently from ordinary matter. Understanding dark matter is essential to understanding how the universe behaves. Scientists assume that dark matter is real. Gravitational theory requires dark matter to explain why our universe looks the way it does. Without dark matter in the galaxies, the circular force of the galaxies would push stars out of their orbits and off into space. Scientists also assume dark matter is plentiful. Scientists theorize that there should be five or six times more dark matter than the matter we now detect. Scientists also theorize that dark matter must be made up of particles that obey all or some of the known laws of physics. Scientists have hypothesized that surrounding most galaxies are huge amounts of matter called dark matter. Dark matter is matter that is invisible and does not emit light, heat or radio waves. Dark matter does not interact with ordinary matter, and possibly billions of dark matter particles pass through ordinary matter every minute (Hawking 186 188). • 44. Who Is Cardiovascular System For Steady State Exercise (... he cardiovascular system responses to steady state exercise (P4 and M2) Heart rate is the number of times a person s heart beats per minute. When you are preforming a type of exercise that will increase your heart rate, then your heart will pump blood all around your body faster and especially to muscles that are working the most because they require the most oxygen because of the intensity they are working at. It is vital to take your resting heart rate and the normal heart rate is 60 100bpm. For example, our cardiovascular exercise was cycling on a stationary bike for 20 minutes at a reasonable pace and this will depend on whether your heart rate will increase at a slow, fast or steady rate. However, the first 5 minutes we cycled at a very fast pace in order for your heart to pump more blood all around the body and to the required muscles in order for them to work harder. But the response is that the heart rate levels off, which means that it becomes steady so that after beginning the exercise and you re like 5 minutes into it then your heart rate will stay the same or increase by little bits unless you change the intensity all the time which is not required when doing cardiovascular exercises. Stroke volume is the amount of blood pumped by the left ventricle and this is measured in mL /beats. The average resting stroke volume is 70 mL/beat and this is best measured when you wake up because you are at you re at full rest meaning you have done nothing to increase your ... Line three is very peaceful and serene, the words dream , life , and earth usually have positive connotations; while line four is certain death, with words like nightmare and black flak . The last line of the poem is very straightforward, and is almost prose. It tells us exactly what we need to know. In the opening paragraph in the story Singer shows how reliable of a narrator that Gimpel is. Gimpel shares many of the nicknames he has had given to him in school, including imbecile, donkey, flax head, dope, glump, ninny, and fool. He then says that he was considered a fool because he was easily taken in. He gave an example of one of the situations that earned him that title. If I slapped someone he d see all the way to Cracow. But I m really not a slugger by nature. I think to myself, Let it pass. So they take advantage of me. These are not words of a fool, but they are words of a very trusting and reliable character. Gimpel is made to be a protagonist character in the opening paragraph. Singer kind of makes you feel sorry for him with the stories of the other kids being mean to him in school. That combined with his rigorous honesty, you find yourself sympathizing for Gimpel. Singer makes Gimpel out to be an innocent soul that is taken advantage of for the other children s amusement and entertainment. By doing this Singer makes the other children antagonist characters. In a way the children are lumped together to be one character; kind of like Gimpel s nemesis. Singer uses a couple of different ways to create the character Gimpel. First of all he uses what other characters say about him and do to him. As we know the other kids at school say he is a fool, and take advantage of him for their own entertainment.
