Careers in Lodging and Food and Beverage Industries
The hospitality industry is a very lucrative and rewarding career choice. Choosing a career in this
field is not for the faint at heart. A career in this industry requires an individual that is ambitious,
self motivated, and has a charismatic personality. However, the hard work comes with many
personal and financial rewards. Hospitality covers all careers that can come underneath the lodging,
restaurants, event planning, theme parks, transportation, and tourism. However, this paper will go
in depth explaining the role of general management, growth of employment, and human ... Show

They must provide owners with a reasonable return on investment, keep guest satisfied and
returning, and keep employees happy. This may seem easy, but because there are so many
interpersonal transactions and because hotels are open every day, all day, the complexities of
operating become challenge that the general manager must face and overcome. The GM not only
focuses on leading and operating the hotel departments but also on aspects of the infrastructure,
from room atmosphere to security (Walker, 2013).
If a restaurant is inside of a hotel, then the food and beverage division is overseen by the general
manager of the hotel. In this scenario the person that runs the food and beverage division is
referred to as the director of food and beverage. In this case, the director reports to the general
manager of the hotel. However, if there is a free standing restaurant, bar, or lounge; there is a
general manager who is responsible for the entire operations of that establishment. If the restaurant,
bar, or lounge is a freestanding establishment, the owner will sometimes double as the general
manager and do the job on their own without hiring someone. Sometimes owners will hire an
individual to fill the job as General Manager, especially if they have invested in a restaurant and do
not have any experience in how to run it properly.

The Day The World Changed
The Day the World Changed Would it be weird if one day you woke up knowing that something
you have wanted to make is actually going to work and changed the world forever? What if it
had changed for the good? What if it had changed for the bad? Could you actually imagine a
world without any phone service or internet? Do you ever wonder if people would actually
communicate in a different way? What about society? Would that be different at all? Would
statistics show that if there were never cellphones or internet invented, would we be any smarter
than we are today? You never know if the invention that you are making is going to go overall

The name of the first cell phone was called the Dyna Tac. Martin Cooper had worked for a
business called Motorola and he was in a competition with his rival Joel Engel, who had worked
for AT T. Whenever Cooper had made the first cellphone call in history, the person he had called
was his rival Joel Engel from AT T. The Dyna Tac cell phone weighed 2.5 pounds and it was a
very large cell phone. The cell phones that were made then, you could only talk for 35 minutes
on them and you would have to hang up and call again because that was the time limit on them.
To charge the cell phone you would have to leave it alone for 10 hours for it to be completely
charged to use it again. Also, the price was actually much higher back then because people were
not used to things like that then. They thought that it was pretty cool how something like that
was invented, because back then people did not have nice things like that to use so it was
actually worth every bit of the money. Martin Cooper wanted to invent a telephone in a car
before he had the idea of a cell phone, but he did not see the point in it if they were inventing a
cell phone. Cooper wanted to make something that would not be attached to a cord. He was a very
determined person, that meaning that whenever he is tempted to do something he is probably
going to do it. He had always took things apart and put it back together and it didn t matter

The main conflict lies within solving the mystery of what happened during the event in which the
woman s husband is killed. The whole movie revolves around this conflict, and is only resolved at
the end of the movie. There are other small conflicts in the movie, such as one that is related to the
main conflict. This conflict involves the stories of the medium, the woman, and Tajomaru. This

The Impact Of Mmp On New Zealand
Since MMP has been implemented into New Zealand, it has allowed for a wider diversity of
parties to be in parliament. On account of that, while it is still possible for a party to win the
majority seats in parliament, it is very difficult to do so; Church (2015) states that this has not
happened in the last four elections. As a result, MMP has impacted on the relationship between the
executive and parliament by making the executive to make arrangements between themselves and
minor parties, in order to stay in power. This is also for the executive to be able to pass votes of
confidence and supply, as well as get potential Bills that they want implemented, to be passed
through parliament. Since 2008, John Key, Prime Ministerand leader of the National party has had
enhanced confidence and supply arrangements with minor parties, consisting of United Future,
ACT and Maori party, in order to stay in the executive. An enhanced confidence and supply
arrangement, is when the minor parties are appointed ministerial posts outside of cabinet, and only
be bound by cabinet responsibility when it involves their portfolio or have been involved in an
development of policy that ended with an agreed position. As Boston and Bullock (2009) note,
these enhanced arrangement is very unusual, as New Zealandis the only country to have these in
politics. Sweden has experimented with similar arrangements, termed contract parliamentarians,
however it did not include members of non government

Fascism In Antz
The movie Antz was a great movie in the aspect where the 2 main characters, General Mandible
and Z demonstrate their own form of governments. The type of government that most reflects
General Mandible was Fascism . Reason being is because he favours soldiers over the working
class, uses military enforcement to control citizens, and implements war to develop antdominance.
Firstly, General Mandible deliberately wanted to leave behind and wanted to kill the working ants
during the tunnel flood. From in the movie he said Workers. They are weak. They lack discipline
(Antz). As the text states, his intentions were to leave the working ants behind, to re create a new
colony with the strongest and well respected soldiers. Secondly, when no ant

Edith Head Research Paper
Throughout Hollywood s history, there have been several great fashion designers, including
Edith Head. She has had a very long and illustrious career that lasted from 1927 to 1981. During
her career, she inspired numerous fashion trends and worked on several popular films. Edith Head
was very secretive about her childhood and would often lie about it when asked a question. A close
friend of hers David Chierichetti eventually learned all about it (Jorgensen, 13). Edith Headwas
born, Edith Claire Posner, on October 28, 1897, in San Bernardino to Max Posner and Anna Levy.
When her mom, Anne married her stepfather, Frank Spare, the three of them moved from mining
town to mining town. This migrant lifestyle made making friends difficult as she often lived in

fashion training, she went to Berkeley majoring in Letters and Sciences with honors in French.
She also received her masters in French from Stanford (18). The only training she had were the art

Detection Of Optic Disc Location
Automatic Detection of optic disc location in Color Fundus Retinal Images Using Circle Operator
Abstract In this work a method is proposed to detect optic disk (OD) automatically in color retinal
fundus image without using background mask and blood vessels. Based on the properties of OD,
an idea of circle operator is presented here. This method has been applied on six public databases
and the promising results are obtained. The experimental results indicate that this proposed method
of automatic OD detection has good accuracy and is also time efficient.
In modern ophthalmology, detection of optic disk is a very important step for retinal image
analysis. It is one of the main feature of extracting the anatomical structure of the retina as
illustrated in Fig. 1(a). Optic disk can be defined as the circular brighter region in retinal fundus
image where blood vessels converge and optic nerve is formed. OD detection is very indispensable
for the computer aided diagnosis of different eye diseases such as glaucoma detection and diabetic
retinopathy [1]. Fig. 1(b) represents the fundus image with retinal lesion.
Many optic disc detection methods have been proposed ear lier. In [4] [6], image brightness based
methods are proposed. In these methods it is expected that the OD usually resembles according to
the brightest pixels within fundus images. In [7] and [8], image variation based methods are
proposed based on the statement that the OD has a high image variation due to the

The Education Of Higher Education
Institutions of higher learning compete amongst each other, enabling them to focus on subjects that
do not pertain to education. The education system has become more of a business organization,
making learning their second priority and further shifting their focus from the quality of education
and students to the quantity of students and the popularity of their institution. The economy of the
country has also had a big impact on shaping universities operating systems. American modern
economy is based on knowledge, thus there is an increasing high demand for higher education.
Higher educationhas become a market system, and universities have to change their traditional
structure in order to become a valuable competitor; although education is in demand, the supply of
quality in education is decreasing. Competition among traditional universities and the increase of
for profit schools have diminished the value of higher education. Educational instiutions are
evolving into businesses and primarily focusing on the profit aspect.Education is a very valuable
business, it creates a lot of free cash flow and there is a high rate of educational needs that continue
to grow. In the essay The Sandbox Experiment , by Peter Sacks, the author makes an argument that
professors are placed in situations where they are forced to moderate their course material in order
to please their students(Sacks 1 2). Sacks conducts the Sandbox experiment which demonstrated
how professors change their

The Major Causes Of The Nigerian Civil War
Nigeria, a country known around the world as the most hardworking place in Africa, has steadily
been on the rise. Like any other country, Nigeria has faced problems within its history that has
contributed to the challenges the country faces today. One of the the most notable events within its
history is the civil war that occurred from 1967 to 1970. This war was caused by a variety of
reasons, but the main factor that brought on the onset of the war was cultural tensions. The
Nigerian Civil Warcan be characterized by a clash of cultures vying for control of the country.
To understand the events that led up to war, you have to understand the colonial history of Nigeria
that contributed to its sectional tensions. Nigeria was carved out of the west of Africa by Britain
without regard for preexisting ethnic, cultural and linguistic divisions. The British combined two
separate provinces to form a single colony that forced over two hundred ethnic and groups to
become a single nation. At the advent of Nigerian independence on 1 October 1960, when Great
Britain gave up colonial power over Nigeria, three regions based on ethnic groupings were created
to comprise the independent nation of Nigeria. Following decades of ethnic tension in colonial
Nigeria, political instability reached a critical mass among independent Nigeria s three dominant
ethnic groups: the Hausa Fulani in the north, Yoruba in the southwest, and Igbo in the southeast.
Each ethnic group vowed for control of the country after independence leading to a series of coup
and assassination attempts.
The measures each ethnic group took to control power resulted in one of the worst atrocities that
divided the country: the Igbo genocide. Different ethnic groups took punitive measures against the
Igbo. Further anger over the murder of prominent Hausa politicians led to the massacre of scattered
Igbo populations in northern Hausa Fulani regions. This persecution triggered the move by Igbo
separatists to form their own nation of Biafra the following year.
The consequences of the war included starvation, mass death, and displacement of Igbos. With the
Nigerian blockade cutting off the Biafrans from their expected source of oil revenue, the Biafrans
suffered

It is important to know that the task a nurse performs is within the scope of practice. So that a
nurse can perform his/her task in a permitted way safely. According to the ICN (International
Council of Nurses), Nursing encompasses autonomous and collaborative care of individuals of all
ages, families, groups and communities, sick or well and in all settings. Nursing includes the
promotion of health, prevention of illness, and the care of ill, disabled and dying people.
Advocacy, promotion of a safe environment, research, participation in shaping health policy and in
patient and health systems management, and education are also key nursing roles (ICN 2010)
This statement clearly defines the scope of practice of a nurse. But in the field of nursing there are
several kinds of care givers. It includes registered nurses, midwives, licensed practitioner nurses,
enrolled nurses and nurse assistants. The scopes of practice for these care givers are not so
common. The scope of practice depends on their education qualification and experience which are
well defined by the governing bodies. Some areas in the scope of practice of a nurse according to
Queensland nursing council are, Giving direct care, including assessing, planning, implementing
and evaluating care Coordinating care and supervising others Leading, managing Teaching,
education, health promotion and counseling Undertaking research Developing health, nursing and

The Theories Of The And Evolution
Galileo saw worlds other than our own, Darwin explained the concept of growth and evolution,
Freud theorized explanations for our suppressed cognition, Archimedes ran out of a bathtub yelling
Eureka once he established the concept of density, and many other renowned scientists provided
substantial theories to explain common associations within everyday life. These brilliant
researchers gave reason to the term why . They provoked curiosity, established ideologies, and
generated scientific laws that define logic. Evolution, adaptation, and development have been
classified as natural instincts for human progression; to discover and uncover the explanations of
reality. Once the diagnostic puzzles have been given solutions, they can be used to benefit our
race. We have enhanced research and studies to allow these scientific outbreaks to lead to greater
good. Physical Therapists have the same aspirations; to improve the quality of lifeand make
developmental progress with our deteriorating bodies. As people get older or fall victim to
injuries, their bodies become damaged. The body is like a machine; there are levers (joints),
pumps (heart), plumbing (vasculature), wiring (nerves), and many other mechanical affiliations
that make the body work as a whole. It is an elaborate product to produce work, so when an injury
or abnormality occurs, it prevents the full magnitude of work to be exerted. For example, each joint
within the body has an average range of motion,

Middle Adulthood Theory
Middle adulthood is categorized from the ages of 35 to 65 years of age and begins a very new
physical and mental chapter of one s life. Recall when Erickson, referred to middle age as a
period when attention turns to creation of a legacy (414). This is done by an adult influencing
the lives of the younger generation. Erickson s theory of generativity states that one is making a
valuable contribution to society by bringing up children or mentoring younger people in some
way. After four decades of research psychiatrist George Vaillant, felt it necessary to modify
Erickson s theory on generativity. Vaillant argued that there is a stage between intimacy and
generativity called career consolidation defined as a paid vocation or a stay at home mother or
father. The outcome of this phase is the creation of a new social network for which the middle
aged adult s primary work serves as a hub (415).Vaillant explains how individuals need to have a

Rhetorical Analysis Of Thomas Paine s The Crisis No. 1
Salema: The Crisis No. 1 is a 16 pamphlet series written by Thomas Paine in December of 1776
(Paine 86). It was a rather successful piece that argued for independence from England and
described the difficulties faced by the colonists because of Britain s tyranny. Paine was mostly
targeting the American patriots and trying to influence them to come together and fight for their
independence. He also included his idea of the colonies being free from British rule. Through his
strong use of tone and figurative language, he got the colonists to picture a tyranny free country.
There are many uses of rhetoric in The Crisis No. 1 . Paine uses a plentiful amount of logos in this
essay. He uses it to explain logically that the colonies would thrive if they were free from British
rule. He pairs his use of logos with lots of pathos. He tries to get the American patriots upset with
the British in order for them to be more willing to fight against them. For example, he uses
pathos when telling the story of the Tory tavern keeper who made a so called ignorant statement
in front of his child. The tone he used when speaking about the tavern keeper seemed almost
furious! The impact of his use of tone leaves the reader appalled. Similarly, he also uses pathos
when he equates offensive war to murder; ...I believe, could have induced me to support an
offensive war, for I think it murder... (Paine 90).
In conclusion, The Crisis No. 1 influenced many ideas in the American Revolution,

A Game of Shadows is the sequel to the 2009 Sherlock Holmes directed by Guy Ritchie. The film
follows Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) as he attempts to unravel the convoluted mystery
of Moriarty across Europe. The film tells the famous story of Holmes fake death at the
Reichanbach Falls. The film has two protagonists, Holmes and his companion Dr. John Watson

scene that shows the build of tension. The scene starts as the characters run from something; the

The camerawork returns to the conventional style used for the soldiers. The framing of the shot
shows the soldier as the focal point of the shot. As the shot seems to be taken slightly from
below it creates a more imposing stance for the soldier and shows the shadow over his eyes from
the peak of his hat. All of this alludes to the mystery of this character and his intentions as the
previously mentioned omniscience of the spectator is broken as the spectator has no idea of whom
or what Little Hansel is. The next scene starts to rebuild the tension again. The only sound is the
diegetic sound of machinery and weapon. The shots are shot and closed off to surroundings. The
extreme close ups [Fig.6] limit the spectator s understanding of what s happening. From this shot
the spectator can infer that it is some kind of weapon but other than that there is no other clue. The
lack of music and complex techniques leaves nothing but the spectator s confusion and as the
montage continues the confusion leads to the building tension. The tension then peaks as the
weapon is revealed [Fig.7] in an almost identical manner to Fig.2 and the spectator is suddenly

Russell Simmons
Russell Simmons has been successful because he turned an idea into an opportunity. Mariotti and
Glackin (2013) states while Russell attend college he saw an opportunity in the underground
music genre Hip hop (p.154). From that moment on Russell knew he could capitalize off hip hop.
Not only did Russell take a chance on an opportunity, he formed a great record label with his friend
Rick Rubincalled Def Jam Records. However his success did not stop there Russell went on to

Russell not only made hip hop mainstream he gave youths around the world artist they could

their roots and their fashion was part of the hip hop culture.
Russell marketing advantages did not stop there. He realized that the clothing that the youth were
wearing was making a statement of who they were. It was then Russell created and promoted the
clothing line Phat Farm. Phat Farm is urban apparel that the urban youth embraced because it
represented their lifestyles. By Russell good marketing strategies more consumers were embracing
and purchasing the products that they were becoming familiar with. Further more Russell Simmons
urban roots also gave him an advantage with the youth on political issues. Mariotti and Glackin

event through social media, radio and TV networks he could get the youth attention. Being that
Russell had the information and associated artists such as Jay Z and Alicia Keys to address the

Poverty in Latin America
Poverty, or the inability to afford basic human needs, is an issue that is spread worldwide. There
are people everywhere who cannot afford shelter, food, healthcare, or education. It seems easy
enough to ignore the bum asking for change on the street, but it becomes near impossible in regions
where whole families are begging on the street. This rings true in Latin Americaand it is extremely
frustrating to see social inequality this extreme. This essay will examine how much povertyexists in
Latin America, why the amount of poverty is so disproportionate and what can possibly be done
to alleviate the amount of poverty in these countries. According to Lopez (2000), the poverty level
in Latin America is far worse in ruralareas like Mexico and the Andean countries. Government
agencies, organizations and intellectuals across the world have expressed unease about the
extreme amounts of poverty in Latin America (Mamalakis, 1996). The exact level of poverty in
Latin America can only be projected because of the high number of people living in rural areas.
This problem is only exacerbated by the number of countries in the Latin America region. Lopez
(2000) projects that over sixty percent of citizens beneath the poverty level live in rural areas
across Latin America. Those rural areas are more susceptible to poverty because there is less
access to jobs and resources. Whole families, including children, are impoverished because they are
forced to live off of the

In 2001 there was a movie released called Black Hawk Down. This movie was based on a true
story of the Battle of Mogadishu in 1993. This battle takes place in Somalia. The movie depicts
this battle pretty accurately from who died and the mistake that were made in the mission plan.
The operation was supposed to be easy and go smoothly but like most plans things didn t go as
they planned. If there wasn t any mistakes made during this operation then there wouldn t have
been a movie made after it. The movie got its title because during the operation there were two

At the overran crash site there were two Delta force snipers who volunteered to go there and

he survived the mob that came to the crash site. The two snipers who were protecting him died
from the mob but the pilot Michael Durant was captured by the mob and taken prisoner. He was
later released after the battle. There were a few armies in on this battle. On the UN side there
was United States, Pakistan, and Malaysia. On the Somalia side there was al Qaeda. The
strength of the UN over powered the Somalian power because the UN had 8 Black Hawk
helicopters and 8 Little Bird helicopters. They also had 12 vehicles to use. Now Somalia
outnumbered the UN forces. Somalia had 4,000 6,000 soldiers and the UN had about 160
soldiers from various elite units. There was much causality in this battle. The U.S. had 18
killed, 73 wounded, and 1 captured. Malaysia had 1 killed and 7 wounded. Pakistan had 1 killed

the U.S. states they had around 1,500 to 3,000 causalities in the battle. There was up to 700
killed, 1,500 wounded, and 21 captured. The leaders of this during these battles for the U.S. were

Are Muslims Be Treated Different
Should Muslims be treated different?Today I will be writing about Muslims and how there is a
lot of social justice. I have many reasons why I chose this topic. Some of the reasons is because
people instantly see them as a threat aka isis and terrorism and are racist against them.Another
reason I chose this group/topic is because they re always getting discriminated in a racial way. So
there s always gonna be Racismin America, but one thing that I myself Jose Ocampo has noticed
and seen in videos and also news reports is that people are mostly racist against Muslims. Now I
have an example of people being racist against Muslims,He is a youtuber that goes by the name of
Adam Saleh. He is known for doing pranks on youtube and also social experiments about racism and
other stuff, but he was getting on the plane for his flight with his best friend Slim Albaher, they

Depending on the severity of the goal, one could establish policies that go against the system. In

novel is put in between a rock and a hard place. There are only two ways out, which are to either
quit or to fix the problems in a span of 6 months. There are numerous ways and processes that are

old friend from college, Jonah. (60 62) There is little small talk as Jonah asks what the problem

Montessori Obedience Essay
The power to obey is the last phase in the development of the will, which in its turn has made
obedience possible. (Montessori, 1988, p.239)
Montessori believed that the disorderly and disobedient acts of a young child where from those
actions that he/she had yet to develop and so where unable to control successfully.
Discipline and obedience could not therefore be inflicted on a young child as had been traditionally
thought, nor could it be sustained through rewards and punishments. Obedience is seen as
something which develops in the child in much the same way as other aspects of his character.
(Montessori, 1988, p.234)
As Montessori observed, obedience is a developmental process and can not occur unless the child

When he/she is finished with the activity, he/she returns the apparatus back to its allocated place,
keeping the order within the environment. All the materials contain a control of error, avoiding the
need for a teacher to highlight the child s mistake, allowing him/her the freedom to correct himself
/herself, with out the need for adult intervention. He/she is then left and allowed the freedom to
carry out his/her task, as many times as he/she wants, for as long as he/she wants without any
unnecessary interruptions.
With this constant cycle of activity begins a process and through the many repetitions of the
exercise the child gradually becomes aware, and conscious of his/her actions that his/her hands are
performing. Through this awareness, his/her actions can no longer be considered a product of an
inner desire, but have become actions performed with a consciousness and deliberation.
That which at first was but a vital impulse (horme) has become a deliberate act. The child s first
movements where instinctive. Now he acts consciously and voluntarily and with this comes the
awakening of the spirit. (Montessori, 1988, p.231)
From observations made by Maria Montessori we have come to the understanding that discipline
is a maturational process and can not be present in a child who has yet to develop his/her own will.

The Pro Life vs Pro Choice Debate
History of Abortion The 1973 court case Roe v. Wade was a landmark decision for United States
history, and it still remains very controversial today. The Court ruled that the right to privacy
applied to a woman s choice to have an abortion, therefore legalizing the action. Abortion is
officially defined as the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during
the first 28 weeks of pregnancy. Today there are two groups continuing this battle, pro life and pro
choice . People who define themselves as pro life believe that abortion is unethical and insist that
the Roe v. Wadedecision be overturned. On the other side of the battle, pro choicers fight to get
even more liberation for women.
Pro choice Argument The main argument of pro choicers is that women should be responsible
for anything involving their own body, because no one else is living her life, and...she will have
to live with [her] decision [to have an abortion] (Pollitt 12). The government isn t affected by a
woman having an abortion, so they shouldn t be involved in the decision. Although they re
pleased that abortion is legal in the United States, present day supporters are still pushing for
modifications to the 1973 Supreme Court ruling: Roe v. Wade was all about privacy, but the most
private parts of a woman s body and the most private decisions she will ever make have never been
more public (Pollitt

Literary Devices In A Tree Grows In Brooklyn
A Tree Grows In Brooklyn is a coming of age novel about Francie Nolan, a poverty stricken yet
ambitious second generation Irish immigrant. Chapter 34 of the book illustrates some of the
hardship that women like Francie faced. The author used diction, imagery, details, language, and
syntax to control how readers depict the difficulties of various characters. In this chapter, Sissy,
Francie s aunt, pretends to carry a child after ten miscarriages. Sissy uses a baby from a disowned
16 year old girl from Maspeth and slowly reunites her with her family. When an author uses diction,
it helps them get the theme and purpose of the selection across to the reader. Though the underlying
context of the chapter is quite serious, the connotation that is... Show more content on

(265) The reader isn t sure of what causes Sissy to become desperate. Is it from anger?
Disappointment? Sadness? The only person s feelings we know about is from her husband.
The details that were included move the plot along to a great extent. When Sissy says she wants
to get another child rather than have one, it shows that Sissy is done with her attempts of being
a biological mother. Her husband, John sees it as supporting another man s bastard. (265) John
ultimately does fall for Sissy s scheme, along with the whole town. The language used in A Tree
In Brooklyn is informal, due to the dialect used by the characters. Going back to John s views on
adopting a child, he ends his sentence with see and calls people bums. (265) Even the narrator at
times had an informal hint to it, such as When Francie heard Aunt Sissy tell Mama that she was
going to get a baby. It seems that in the early 1920s, immigrants weren t granted the best education
and this is shown through their words and lack of correct

South Africa Era
The development of South Africa during the early modern era was a very hard time. South
Africa was said to be a very diverse country that was divided into five different districts. These
districts include the pre colonial era, the colonial era, the post colonial era, the apartheid era, and
the post apartheid era. All of these different eras play a big role in who South Africais today. Not
that South Africa needs any type of introduction but to get a better understanding of this countries

During the early modern era or the start of the 15th century of South Africa was not as popular as
the years to come. During that time South Africa had the Portuguese seafarers coming and going in
and out of the country which they had pioneered the sea route from India. On the west coast where
they had traveled the land of South Africa they had nominally claimed the land as their own! The
Portuguese had established trading stations along the west coast of Africa rather than permanent
settlements. (Sahistory)They built forts at Cape Blanco, Sierra Leone and Elmina to protect their
trading stations from rival European traders. These trading stations helped them as they would
travel back and forth from India and along the west coast.
The Dutch were the first European trading power to set up a permanent settlement in South Africa.
In 1652 the powerful Dutch East India Company built a fort and established a supply station under
the command of Jan Van Riebeeck on

Aristotelian Tragedy Macbeth Essays
Aristotelian Tragedy: Macbeth Aristotle is known widely for developing his ideas on tragedy. He
recorded these ideas in his Poetics in which he comments on the plot, purpose, and effect that a
true tragedy must have. The structure of these tragedies has been an example for many writers
including Shakespeare himself. Many of Shakespeare s plays follow Aristotelian ideas of tragedy,
for instance Macbethdoes a decent job in shadowing Aristotle s model. Aristotle describes one of
the most important elements of a tragedy to be a tragic hero. The tragic hero however must present
certain qualities such as nobility and virtue. In the play Macbeth, Macbeth is a perfect example of a
tragic hero. Macbeth begins the play coming home from battle,... Show more content on

However, Macbeth does not go unpunished as he suffers countless dreams and illusions that
drive him to insanity. The loss of his wife also brings Macbeth to his final denouement. In the
end, Macbeth is killed by Macduff; because of his arrogance he believed he was invincible even
after being told his fate. Macbeth reaches his end through the same way he lived his life, through
murder and deception. Many argue over the fairness of Macbeth s life, but the goal of a tragedy
in Aristotle s view point is to strike fear and pity in the audience through harsh punishment upon
the hero in extreme ways. Finally, Aristotle claims that in order for a tragedy to be effective, the
fear and pity must be released from the audience through catharsis. First the tragic hero must
gain some knowledge from his tragic life. Macbeth shows this self realization in his yellow leaf
soliloquy when he expresses remorse for his actions. Also, in the end he knows he must fight
until the end whether his fate is death. At this point the audience is cleansed of the emotions of
the plot and the tragedy is finished. Macbeth is a primary example of a typical Aristotelian
tragedy. It follows the structure necessary from the tragic hero, to his downfall and ultimately to
the catharsis necessary for an original Greek drama. The aspects of this play are a perfect example
of the tragedies of that

Why Is Qantas So Important To The Australian Aviation...
The Australian aviation industry faced toughest operating environment in the past 2 years driven by
increased capacity in the domestic and global market, weak consumer sentiments after repetitive
plane crashes, the ever rising and unstable oil prices and the economic uncertainty prevailing due to
global economic crisis. Qantasintroduced transformations in the form of maximising cost

One Month Compounded Release Analysis
One formulation approach that could be used in order to develop a one month sustained release
formulation of compound 5 as a microbicide would be using intravaginal rings. Intravaginal rings
are flexible and torus shaped devices that are placed in the vagina (adjacent to the cervix). A
concentration gradient is formed when the device comes into contact with the vaginal lumen and
hence the drug is released. The rings are usually made up of silicone or ethylene vinyl acetate.

Long Live Latin
Latin is a language that a lot of people had to study in school or university with varying degrees of
enthusiasm, given its common status as a dead language. In her essay Long Live Latin! The
Language that Never Died Katja Wiesner argues that Latin should be referred as vivant linguae
mortuae, living dead language rather than being considered dead. The author demonstrates this by
pointing out that although there are no native speakers of Latin anymore since people study it in
school or university, the language has constantly been evolving and it is still being used for
communication purposes.
In order to support her argument, Wiesner highlights that Latin has survived through Romance

She manages doing that by not using much Latin terminology and If she does, she does provide a
translations which means that this would not hinder the understanding of a person who has not
studied Latin.
The author s first argument recognizes the language s ability to survive through Romance
languages such as Portuguese and Spanish and how it has influenced their languages grammatical
structures as well as their vocabulary. The author also provides the rather unexpected example of
the English language which also plays a part in preserving Latin, since the latter has had an
influence on the former s vocabulary, abbreviations and structures. This was a very interesting point
since a lot of people, including myself, associate Latin primarily with Romance languages rather
than Germanic ones.
Another surprising but convincing point, listed in the essay, is the fact that Latin is not only used
by the Catholic Church, as a mean for communication or for liturgical purposes, but also the
Churches in promoting the language via social networks such as Twitter, where Pope Francis is
active. Even though one could argue that the purpose of establishing this account was not primarily
promotion of the language, Wiesner points out that other user answer to the Pope in Latin, which
proves that the Catholic Church is helping to popularize

sacrifices along the way; and when that road is a lonely one, with only oneself to rely upon, the
hardship intensifies to become destructive to those involved. This is particularly true in the story
Araby, where James Joyce portrays the trials and tribulations of a young boy s initiation into
adulthood. Many of the boy s problems lie in not being able to come to grips with the harsh reality
that no matter how much he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Throughout the story, Joyce portrays many symbols to show the boys transition into becoming an
adult. Joyce says, I sat staring at the clock for some time and, when its ticking began to irritate me,
I left the room. The ticking of the clock symbolized the long and frustrating journey into
adulthood; and we see from the fact that it irritated him, shows his desire to become an adult
already. Later in the story, Joyce portrays an instance where the boy desires to be a man even
though he is not; From the front window I saw my companions playing below in the street. It is as
if he is an adult, towering over his friends, looking down upon them when in reality they are the
same age as he is.
After receiving money and permission from his uncle to go to the bazaar, we see another
symbol used to show his lonely road into maturity. Joyce says, I took my seat in a third class
carriage of a deserted train. After an intolerable delay the train moved out of the station slowly.
The train is the symbol used here to show the long journey that is taking place in his life. The fact
that it was deserted and that the train moved slowly shows that the transition into adulthood is a
very slow moving time in a boy s life, which can be very lonely at times; I remained alone in the
bare carriage.
Joyce is not portraying how adolescents can act

Music Therapy Observation
The related service observed during the field experience with students with low incidence
disabilities was music therapy. The observation setting provided the students with ample space and
a multitude of instruments to choose from. The lights would be turned off and a string of small
lights would illuminate the room along with various instruments that lit up. The musictherapist was
extremely engaging and encouraged the students to play with the instruments found within the room.
The students were from a low functioning, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) transitions class and
many were non verbal. When it came time to go to music therapy, the students seemed eager. Music
provides a multi sensory stimulation that is beneficial for students with ASD. The music therapist

Music therapy helps individuals with disabilities to identify and express his or her emotions as
well as to assist in the development of verbal communication, speech and language skills. The data
collection tool implemented to track the progress of students focused on student participation and
independence levels. These levels were tracked weekly and broken down into 5 sections:
Independent, Verbal, Gestural, Physical, and No Participation. Data was also collected when
measuring a student s response to musical selection and to see if a rhythm was followed in either
double or triple meter.
Overall, the music therapy that was observed was truly informative. I have never been exposed to
this form of therapy and I was impressed. Not only does music therapy provide students with
disabilities an outlet for emotional expression, but it also helps to address student IEP goals when it
comes to social skills, speech and language skills, and verbal communication. The students were
receptive of the therapy and seemed to enjoy the atmosphere within the music

Profit And Non Profit Organizations
Profit and Non profit organizations make up the core of American business culture and charitable
services. Nonprofits organizations like The American Kidney depend on donations and grants from
individuals, government supplements, and corporations. For profit organizations like The Dallas
Opera depends on revenue from sales and contributions to meet the needs of their mission. While
both The American KidneyFund and The Dallas Opera have different corporate cultures that require
support from outside sources, they each must display ethical values to support the financial needs
of the institution; and to the recipients of services provided. In this, both companies set a mission
and company profile to display to illustrate why their organizations are worthy of financial support
and outreach from the community.
The American Kidney Fund (AKF) was founded in 1971, to help any single individual with kidney
failure pay for dialysis. More than 40 years later, AKF has become the leading source of direct
financial aid to dialysis patients across the nation. The American Kidney Fund leads the nation in
providing charitable assistance to dialysis patients who need help with the costs associated with
treating kidney failure. The American Kidney Fund (AKF) is a major publicly supported 501(c)(3)
non profit organization. AKF is provides treatment related financial assistance to dialysis patients
and for kidney disease education and prevention programs. AKF provides grants that

Introduction The Surgeon General s Office, First Lady Obama, and many other prominent
officials have called to action campaigns to address obesity as public health issue which leads to
many other chronic care issues. Childhood obesity has reached epidemic levels in developed
countries. Twenty five percent of children in the US are overweightand 11% are obese. Overweight
and obesity in childhood are known to have significant impact on both physical and psychological
health. The mechanism of obesity development is not fully understood and it is believed to be a
disorder with multiple causes. Environmental factors, lifestyle preferences, and cultural
environment play pivotal roles in the rising prevalence of obesity worldwide. Childhood obesity
now affects 1 in 6 children and adolescents in the United States (CDC, 2015). In 2011 2012, (Ogen,

Factors that influence obesity include but limited to behavior, socioeconomics, and genetics,
cultural and environmental. Behavioral and ecological factors are huge contributors to obesity
in at risk populations and provide the maximum potential for action and interventions designed
for prevention and treatment in these communities. Body Mass Index (BMI) is the tool use to
determine childhood obesity and overweight stats. Overweight is defined as a BMI at or above

Culture And Conflict In The Organizational Culture Of Uber
Culture is the collective attitude, intellect, and atmosphere that a community creates for itself. This
includes values, traditions, and social norms. Specifically, organizational culture is within a
community, group, or business that shares values, follows a code of conduct and standards, and
holds its members accountable for their contributions. Organizational culture arises from the goals
and mission set out by the company. A negligent culture can provoke and encourage inappropriate
behavior between employees. As shown with Uber, organizational culture can become dangerous
and harmful to its members if proper standards are not established. Culture and conflict often
intersect each other when dealing with various issues. Many individuals... Show more content on

It s a simple experience and a much more pleasant way to get a ride than stepping onto a busy
street and waving at oncoming traffic (Stone, 2014, p. 53). It is convenient for both the
employee and customer to arrange a ride, which makes Uber preferable. Additionally, the
employees of Uber are given more benefits than the employees of taxi companies. For example,
Uber issues an iPhone with the Uber software, free gear to secure it to their windshield and an
hour of orientation (Stone, 2014, p. 52). It is this simplicity that appeals to people seeking
employment. They are also using a platform that is accessible to many of their customers, because,
as of 2015, 64% of American adults now own a smartphone of some kind (Smith, 2015). Since their
focus is on luxury, innovation, and results, they have transformed the public transportation system
in their favor. Although Uber s culture is useful to them in producing results, they lack the internal
development of their employee relationships. Their drive for progress and success came at the cost
of their reputation. Yet the focus on pushing for the best result has also fueled what current and
former Uber employees describe as a Hobbesian environment at the company, in which workers are
sometimes pitted against one another and where a blind eye is turned to infractions from top
performers (Isaac, 2017). This company has had many issues with regulating interactions with
employees, and holding those who act

They must provide owners with a reasonable return on investment, keep guest satisfied and returning, and keep employees happy. This may seem easy, but because there are so many interpersonal transactions and because hotels are open every day, all day, the complexities of operating become challenge that the general manager must face and overcome. The GM not only focuses on leading and operating the hotel departments but also on aspects of the infrastructure, from room atmosphere to security (Walker, 2013). If a restaurant is inside of a hotel, then the food and beverage division is overseen by the general manager of the hotel. In this scenario the person that runs the food and beverage division is referred to as the director of food and beverage. In this case, the director reports to the general manager of the hotel. However, if there is a free standing restaurant, bar, or lounge; there is a general manager who is responsible for the entire operations of that establishment. If the restaurant, bar, or lounge is a freestanding establishment, the owner will sometimes double as the general manager and do the job on their own without hiring someone. Sometimes owners will hire an individual to fill the job as General Manager, especially if they have invested in a restaurant and do not have any experience in how to run it properly. If ... On account of that, while it is still possible for a party to win the majority seats in parliament, it is very difficult to do so; Church (2015) states that this has not happened in the last four elections. As a result, MMP has impacted on the relationship between the executive and parliament by making the executive to make arrangements between themselves and minor parties, in order to stay in power. This is also for the executive to be able to pass votes of confidence and supply, as well as get potential Bills that they want implemented, to be passed through parliament. Since 2008, John Key, Prime Ministerand leader of the National party has had enhanced confidence and supply arrangements with minor parties, consisting of United Future, ACT and Maori party, in order to stay in the executive. Detection Of Optic Disc Location Automatic Detection of optic disc location in Color Fundus Retinal Images Using Circle Operator Abstract In this work a method is proposed to detect optic disk (OD) automatically in color retinal fundus image without using background mask and blood vessels. Based on the properties of OD, an idea of circle operator is presented here. This method has been applied on six public databases and the promising results are obtained. The experimental results indicate that this proposed method of automatic OD detection has good accuracy and is also time efficient. In modern ophthalmology, detection of optic disk is a very important step for retinal image analysis. It is one of the main feature of extracting the anatomical structure of the retina as illustrated in Fig. 1(a). Optic disk can be defined as the circular brighter region in retinal fundus image where blood vessels converge and optic nerve is formed. OD detection is very indispensable for the computer aided diagnosis of different eye diseases such as glaucoma detection and diabetic retinopathy [1]. Fig. 1(b) represents the fundus image with retinal lesion. Many optic disc detection methods have been proposed ear lier. In [4] [6], image brightness based methods are proposed. Like any other country, Nigeria has faced problems within its history that has contributed to the challenges the country faces today. One of the the most notable events within its history is the civil war that occurred from 1967 to 1970. This war was caused by a variety of reasons, but the main factor that brought on the onset of the war was cultural tensions. The Nigerian Civil Warcan be characterized by a clash of cultures vying for control of the country. To understand the events that led up to war, you have to understand the colonial history of Nigeria that contributed to its sectional tensions. Nigeria was carved out of the west of Africa by Britain without regard for preexisting ethnic, cultural and linguistic divisions. The British combined two separate provinces to form a single colony that forced over two hundred ethnic and groups to become a single nation. At the advent of Nigerian independence on 1 October 1960, when Great Britain gave up colonial power over Nigeria, three regions based on ethnic groupings were created to comprise the independent nation of Nigeria. Following decades of ethnic tension in colonial Nigeria, political instability reached a critical mass among independent Nigeria s three dominant ethnic groups: the Hausa Fulani in the north, Yoruba in the southwest, and Igbo in the southeast. Each ethnic group vowed for control of the country after independence leading to a series of coup and assassination attempts. The measures each ethnic group took to control power resulted in one of the worst atrocities that divided the country: the Igbo genocide. Different ethnic groups took punitive measures against the Igbo. Further anger over the murder of prominent Hausa politicians led to the massacre of scattered Igbo populations in northern Hausa Fulani regions. This persecution triggered the move by Igbo separatists to form their own nation of Biafra the following year. The consequences of the war included starvation, mass death, and displacement of Igbos. It was a rather successful piece that argued for independence from England and described the difficulties faced by the colonists because of Britain s tyranny. Paine was mostly targeting the American patriots and trying to influence them to come together and fight for their independence. He also included his idea of the colonies being free from British rule. Through his strong use of tone and figurative language, he got the colonists to picture a tyranny free country. There are many uses of rhetoric in The Crisis No. 1 . Paine uses a plentiful amount of logos in this essay. He uses it to explain logically that the colonies would thrive if they were free from British rule. He pairs his use of logos with lots of pathos. He tries to get the American patriots upset with the British in order for them to be more willing to fight against them. For example, he uses pathos when telling the story of the Tory tavern keeper who made a so called ignorant statement in front of his child. The tone he used when speaking about the tavern keeper seemed almost furious! The impact of his use of tone leaves the reader appalled. Similarly, he also uses pathos when he equates offensive war to murder; ...I believe, could have induced me to support an offensive war, for I think it murder... (Paine 90). Discipline and obedience could not therefore be inflicted on a young child as had been traditionally thought, nor could it be sustained through rewards and punishments. • 28. Pro Life Vs Pro Choice Debate Kayla Weekes English 10B Honors Mrs. Kim Miles The Pro Life vs Pro Choice Debate History of Abortion The 1973 court case Roe v. Wade was a landmark decision for United States history, and it still remains very controversial today. The Court ruled that the right to privacy applied to a woman s choice to have an abortion, therefore legalizing the action. Abortion is officially defined as the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy. Today there are two groups continuing this battle, pro life and pro choice . People who define themselves as pro life believe that abortion is unethical and insist that the Roe v. Wadedecision be overturned. On the other side of the battle, pro choicers fight to get even more liberation for women. Pro choice Argument The main argument of pro choicers is that women should be responsible for anything involving their own body, because no one else is living her life, and...she will have to live with [her] decision [to have an abortion] (Pollitt 12). The government isn t affected by a woman having an abortion, so they shouldn t be involved in the decision. Although they re pleased that abortion is legal in the United States, present day supporters are still pushing for modifications to the 1973 Supreme Court ruling: Roe v. Wade was all about privacy, but the most private parts of a woman s body and the most private decisions she will ever make have never been more public (Pollitt ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He recorded these ideas in his Poetics in which he comments on the plot, purpose, and effect that a true tragedy must have. The structure of these tragedies has been an example for many writers including Shakespeare himself. Many of Shakespeare s plays follow Aristotelian ideas of tragedy, for instance Macbethdoes a decent job in shadowing Aristotle s model. However, Macbeth does not go unpunished as he suffers countless dreams and illusions that drive him to insanity. The loss of his wife also brings Macbeth to his final denouement. In the end, Macbeth is killed by Macduff; because of his arrogance he believed he was invincible even after being told his fate. Macbeth reaches his end through the same way he lived his life, through murder and deception. Many argue over the fairness of Macbeth s life, but the goal of a tragedy in Aristotle s view point is to strike fear and pity in the audience through harsh punishment upon the hero in extreme ways. Finally, Aristotle claims that in order for a tragedy to be effective, the fear and pity must be released from the audience through catharsis. First the tragic hero must gain some knowledge from his tragic life. Macbeth shows this self realization in his yellow leaf soliloquy when he expresses remorse for his actions. Also, in the end he knows he must fight until the end whether his fate is death. At this point the audience is cleansed of the emotions of the plot and the tragedy is finished. The author also provides the rather unexpected example of the English language which also plays a part in preserving Latin, since the latter has had an influence on the former s vocabulary, abbreviations and structures. This was a very interesting point since a lot of people, including myself, associate Latin primarily with Romance languages rather than Germanic ones. Another surprising but convincing point, listed in the essay, is the fact that Latin is not only used by the Catholic Church, as a mean for communication or for liturgical purposes, but also the Churches in promoting the language via social networks such as Twitter, where Pope Francis is active.
