Age Of Disillusionment Research Paper
Peltier 1
William Peltier

English III Honors 2nd
30 January 2017
The Age of Disillusionment The Age of Disillusionment can be defined as a time when tragedies
such as war and poverty caused many to lose their naГЇve and carefree way of life. During this
time, people believed life was dangerous, and they were afraid of what would happen next in their
lives. The fear they felt during this time was a result of World War I
, World War II, the Great
Depression, and the devastation they brought (Hitt). Much like President Woodrow Wilsons War
Message to Congress and Phillip Larkin s poem MCMXIV, the Age of Disillusionment was filled
with hopelessness and fear as a result of tragic events such as the sinking of the passenger ship, the
Lusitania. On May 1, 1915, the British passenger ship, the Lusitania, set sail from ... Show more

He knew he had to do something to stop the tyrannical German government from wreaking any
more havoc upon the lives of civilians (Wilson). President Wilson s speech is very characteristic
of the Age of Disillusionment because, like many works during the age, his speech is about
people coming to terms with the fact that their loved ones have died and how they feel hopeless
for a better life. During this age, people began to question whether they were safe (Hitt).
President Wilson says the only way to ensure a safer life and better future for all, was to go to
war with Germany. He knew that people would be scared to take such a large risk, and knew that
many would die, but he also knew that it must be done. Four days after his speech, the United
States of America officially entered World War I (Wilson). The amount of loss that was to come in
the war would only lead to Americans being more fearful and the feeling of disillusionment during
the age would only grow. As a result, the literary aspect of the Age of Disillusionment flourished
and quickly became one of the most influential ages in American

Imperialism Spread Of China And The Opium War
When imperialism spread to China: Events leading to the Opium War
Have you ever wondered what it would be like if an event in history ceased to happen or the effect
of a slight change in the past and if it would drastically change the future? Like the butterfly affect?
I recently came across some historical text about China. During the time of imperialism, a major
shift had happened in China that caused an entire dynasty to fall. The collapse caused a half
century long recovery period and a change in world trade. This event was the Opium War.
The Opium War in China occurred in two time spans, 1839 1842 and 1856 1860, however, I am
just going to discuss the first one. During the 19th century, global trade had spiked interest in many

Would the country have collapsed on itself? Throughout history Britain consistently continued
taking over and or imperializing multiple countries to then rely on them for survival and wealth.
Could this have been a possible future for China? Today the United States is China s major
agricultural source. Yet, if this event had not transpired would China still be able to produce its
own food? Would China today even exist or would it have been consumed by another superior
country?
During the reign of Qing Emperor Daoguang (1820 1850), foreign trade was only allowed in the
commercial port of Canton. Due to the foreign trade policy, for Britain to obtain Chinese goods
they would have to purchase them with silver. Silver was China s currency at that time. The
English speaking merchants were not allowed to learn Chinese and were to be harshly punished
if they left the port to enter China. This frustrated the British East India Company. They had
very few restrictions from foreign ports and companies. The reasoning behind this was they had
already seized control of them. This gave Great Britain a massive advantage: A monopoly system
of the seas. A stem of related problems began to emerge for Britain. They did not have their own
supply of silver and would purchase it from Mexico so it could be used to purchase large quantities
of Chinese Tea. Tea and sugar made a marvelous mildly addicting drug food... (qtd. Dunn) Years

The Mystery Of Easter Island
In Easter Island...the shadows of the departed builders still possess the land...the whole air
vibrates with a vast purpose and energy which has been and is no more. What was it? Why was
it? said Katherine Routledge, an explorer and archaeologist. People across the globe have
marveled at the wonders of Easter Island for centuries. The remains of the island are huge statues
called moai, which seemed to be an impossible feat for people of the time. Archaeologists
everywhere are gathering together facts, theories, and unanswered questions in an attempt to solve
the mystery of Easter Island.
1. Facts The people who once lived on Easter Island called themselves the Rapa Nui. The Rapa
Nui was said to be a mixed race island with both dark skinned and light living together. Some
were even described as having red hair and being sun burnt looking, and that Their bodies were
heavily tattooed, (Mysterious Places: Explore Easter Island). Easter Island has a total of 887
statues, or moai (Easter Island). Stone blocks, or sometimes said to be volcanic ash (Mysterious
Places: Explore Easter Island), were carved to be an average of 13 feet tall, 14 tons, and resembled
head and torso figures (Easter Island World Heritage Site). The largest moai, the ahu, was
destroyed (Secrets of Easter Island). Many materials were used for the statues: basalt and red scoria
were used to make a few of the moai, obsidian was used mainly for the eyes, and tuff was used for
most of the moai

The Influence Of John Dewey In American Schools
Many people have been critical about the American education system throughout the county s
history. John Dewey was an extremely influential thinker on the topic of education during the 20th
Century. He argued that education should be made up of social and interactive processes, and the
school itself is a social place, where social reform can and should take place. He believed that
students do well in an environment where there are experiences and interaction with the curriculum.
He also believed that every student should have the opportunity to take part in their own learning.
His views can be seen in our own educationsystem today. With the vast opportunities, boundless
electives, and the curriculum, schools today are preparing students for John Dewey s vision which
influences students to become educated citizens.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

MusГ©e des Beaux Arts by W. H. Auden Essay
Suffering is embedded in our daily lives. There are devastating things going on in our daily
environments and yet, people seldom realize this as they occupy themselves with other tasks. W.H.
Auden s, MusГ©e des Beaux Arts, is a statement on human perceptions and how we use them to
observe, or block out humansuffering. While we are doing ordinary things like eating, or opening a
window, bad things can be happening to others and it is as easy as looking up, to see what is
actually going on. Auden illustrates societies indifference to human suffering through the form of
his poem and by alluding to artwork that compares human perceptions and juxtaposes ordinary
images with images of suffering and tragedy. The form of MusГ©e des Beaux Arts... Show more

The lines are enjambed with phrases stopping in the middle of new lines and lines spilling into
other lines. The lines do not pause to acknowledge the end of sentences like people seldom pause
their daily lives to acknowledge the suffering of those around them. Auden also uses bad syntax
in the last line of the poem, had somewhere to get to and sailed calmly on. Auden may have
chosen to write in this free form to demonstrate that people are so indifferent to what is going on
around them that it does not make any difference what form the poem is written in, as it will
only be overlooked and not given any attention. The form of the poem allows the reader to
consider the ways in which suffering is masked by the frenzy of everyday life and that even the
acknowledged suffering of others does not seem to be of any concern to anybody but the sufferer.
Auden s poem is a criticism of human perceptions and how we use them to detect, or suppress
human suffering. In the first half of the poem Auden compares versions of indifference by
portraying youth and age, animals, and humans (Shmoop, 2014). In the first few lines of the poem,
Auden comments on the perceptions of the Old Masters and how they were never wrong in their
discernment of suffering. He then compares the old masters perceptions to the perceptions of
children and animals and how they are unaware of,

From Light Comes Darkness, And From Darkness Essay
Quote 1
From Light comes Darkness, and from Darkness.. Light.
Warcraft
A.In this quote, it tells us that positive and negative go hand in hand. It tells us that whether
there is too much of something and less of the other or less of something and too much of the
other, both will correlate with each other. As life is a spiral of ups and downs, whether it may be
good or bad, happy or sad, opposites will balance each other, for it is the essence of life.
B.Whenever good things surround me, bad things always come around. The most memorable one
was the time when my brother and I graduated college together (my first course before I ladderized
it). Everyone was happy and everything was going well for the family, then a month after the
graduation, the tides quickly turned around and my mother s sickness got worse, she got
admitted to the ICU in a hospital for a month and a half, everything quickly turned around so
fast, financial shortcomings came and everyone was in a state of panic, shock and fear. Then
came the month of June, my mother got well for a few weeks, sense of relief was felt by
everyone. I finally got to continue my education together with my friends, I thought that
everything was turning back to normal then while I was at school fixing my class schedule, my
father called me and.. You already know what happened. It left the whole family feel miserable,

Rhetorical Analysis Of Blood, Toil, Tears, And Sweat
On May 13th, 1940, newly elected Prime Minister Winston Churchill delivered a historic speech
titled Blood, Toil, Tears, and Sweat . He discusses the necessity of an empowered Great Britain
in the shadow of World War II; as well as his confidence within the strength of the British people.
This speech s lasting impact was reinforced by it s usage of the three appeals: ethos, logos, and
pathos. These appeals address the ethical, logical, and emotional ideas and undertones within a
piece. Churchill s iconic speech truly encapsulates these three appeals within every word.
Ethos is considered to be the ethical aspect of a piece. In other words: is the information and
speaker reputable and trustworthy? This appeal is clearly demonstrated within Blood, Toil, Tears,
and Sweat . For example, Churchill states
In this crisis I hope I may be pardoned if I do not address the House at any length today. I hope

reconstruction, will make allowance, all allowance, for any lack of ceremony ... Show more content

He demonstrates a sense of respect for those listening to his word and those who he works with,
which creates trust in the audience and gives a reputable air to his words. Logos refers to the
logic of a work, addressing if the piece is able to be understood and makes sense. This appeal is
demonstrated in the line Let that be realized; no survival for the British Empire, no survival for all
that the British Empire has stood for (Churchill). Churchill frankly states that without action, the
British Empire and its values will crumble in the face of Nazi Germany. This clear and conscience
delivery of Britain s fate is logical and able to be understood. So in turn, the appeal logos can be

Symptoms And Symptoms Of Pneumonia
Introduction: Pneumonia is the leading infectious cause of death in children and the fourth leading
cause of death in the elderly worldwide.1,2 Although pneumonia is a common disease, it rarely
affects healthy individuals. This condition affects people of all ages, however it is most dangerous
in immunocompromised individuals such as children, infants, and older adults.1 Other populations
that are vulnerable are those who are bedridden, inactive, or immobile; those with altered
consciousness; those who have difficulty swallowing; and those who have impaired cough
reflexes.1 Risk factors for pneumonia include cigarette smoking, acute respiratory infections,
chronic bronchitis, uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, uremia, dehydration,... Show more content on

Pathophysiology: In a normal, healthy lung, air travels through a highway of airways, called
bronchioles, to eventually reach tiny air sacs, called alveoli, the site of gas exchange with the blood
capillaries.1 The right and left lungs are separated by fissures into lobes and are further divided into
segments and then into lobules, which contain the alveoli.1 In pneumonia, a common inflammatory
and infectious disease of the lung, fluid accumulates within the alveoli and/or the lobe, which
reduces the surface area exposed to air making it difficult to breath.3 Typically, the body is able to
filter out germs that invade the respiratory system by using defense mechanisms such as the
immune system, the structure of the nose and throat, coughing, and cilia; however, some germs are
able to reach the lungs to cause infection, especially in those who are immunocompromised.3 For
example, someone who is in a medically induced coma due to a stroke, is unable to cough, and as a
result, the germs remain in the airway. Once the germs enter the lungs, the immune system
responds by attacking.3 This causes the alveoli to inflame, turn red, and fill up with fluid and pus,
which are the symptoms of pneumonia.3 There are three common bacteria that cause pneumonia
Streptococcus pneumonia, Legionella pneumophilia, and Mycoplasma pneumonia.3 Streptococcus
pneumoniae or pneumococcus are the most common

History of the U.S. Health Care Delivery System
Introduction:
In order to understand current health delivery services changes and formulate predictions, one
must thoroughly comprehend the three developmental eras of the health care system. The
evolution of our current health care system began in 1850, and has metamorphosed in three time
periods, 1850 to 1900, 1900 to World War II (WW II), and WW II to 2009. Significant distinct and
overlapping trends in disease prevalence, availability of health care resources, social organizations,
and the public s knowledge and perception of health and illness and technology.

Nursing care was unscientific and consisted of assisting patients with usual body functions; and
was typically administered by women of a religious order or by women who by nature of their
lifestyle frequented hospitals. Hospital care was for the poor and destitute; since home based
medical care was better than risking additional infections in the dirty, crowded, and disease ridden
hospitals. During the typhus epidemic of 1852, hospital staff and patients suffered the greatest
morbidity and mortality. (Ranade , 199817 19)
1900 World War II: Birthing of Scientific Medicine
New discoveries spawn more medical research in medical colleges. In 1910, Abraham Flexner of
the Carnegie Foundation publishes his study on medical education, and induces major medical
education reform. Medical knowledge flourishes and specialists account for 20% of physicians in
1940. Hospitals begin to embellish new medical technology as physicians relied on the hospital as
a source of access to new technology and as a facility in which to care for their sickest patients.

Relationship Between Convergence And Harry Potter
Convergence has become somewhat vital to the success of a screen text; the number of mediums
it engages with can, to some extent, affect how much of a fan base it creates. The power of the
media producer and the power of the media consumer interact in unpredictable ways stated by
Henry Jenkins. (2006:2) Participatory culture has, in some cases, created the potential for more
enriched franchises that surpass their original purpose, some screen texts can develop a lot further
than expected due to how well received they are. The popularity of the most recognizable film
franchises could be seen as the product of convergence within fan culture. In this essay, I am going
to discuss the relationship between Harry Potterfans and convergence and the various ways the fans
have constructed alternate views of the franchise. I will discuss how Harry Potter has become
globally successful through its convergence and fan culture.
Harry Potter is a relevant case study of convergence because it extends past its original platform,
which was books; there are now Harry Potter video games, merchandise, themed websites and,
the most recent of which, theme parks. In this case, Universal, a company in partnership with
Warner Brothers who own Harry Potter, opened a Harry Potter segment to their original theme
park in 2014 in Florida. This was an effort to bring back the former popularity it once had, such as
when the first book was written in 1997 by J.K.Rowling. The series has become a global

The Horror Film Genre
Horror films have been around for over 100 years, petrifying people and bringing their worst
fears to life but still they can t get enough of this sick and gory genre that is unbelievably
entertaining and captivating to the audience. Horror comes with many sub genres from your
bloody slashers like Friday the 13th to your Supernatural Horrors like The Exorcist, but in the end
they all seem to do their job by scaring you and leaving you with nightmares for weeks on end.
Usually Horror s films have the same character stereotypes such as the nerd, the jock, the slut, the
virgin, the junky, the tough hero, the unlikely hero and last but not least the masked murderer, but
yet they all play their own part in the making of these horrors movies whether it is the extremely
slow walk the killer does but almost always catches the victim, or the unwise decision to split up
and investigate where the unusual noise is coming from.
Every film uses pro filmic codes, despite of what genre it is. Location, lighting styles, props,
costumes and compositions are all used. In horrors location is a very big factor to the plot, as it
contributes to the storyline and without a certain location the viewer would get quite confused as
to where it s set, some locations that are frequently used are places like the woods, summer camps
and just normal homes. Props used can vary from many different items whether it is from the killer
s life ending weapons or something as simple as jewellery. Lightning styles

Pan s Labyrinth Analysis Essay
Pan s Labyrinth Award winning filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro delivers a unique, richly
imagined epic with Pan s Labyrinth released in 2006, a gothic fairy tale set against the postwar
repression of Franco s Spain. Del Toro s sixth and most ambitious film, Pan s Labyrinth harnesses
the formal characteristics of classic folklore to a 20th Century period. Del Toro portrays a child as
the key character, to communicate that children minds are not cemented. Children avoid reality
through the subconscious imagination which is untainted by a grown up person, so through a point
of an innocent child more is captured. The film showcases what the imagination can do as a means

The language of the film is in Spanish, adding to the enmity as a foreign language to English
speakers. The use of subtitles draws in the audience s attention making them cling on to every
word being said because of the intensity of the movie. There is also a lot of disturbing visual
effects in the pan s labyrinth which also captures the audiences attention such as the scene where
Captain Vidal must stitch his own cheek sliced open from the mouth adds to the realism of the
film, leaving the audience to squirm in their senses, imagining the pain. The use of close ups
and tracking shots emphasize the hysterical, tragic mood of the story. This causes the audience
to feel maudlin and affected. An example is the frame of a close up high angled shot when we
see Captain Vidal shoot Ofelia. We realize the gravity of the crime, watching Ofelia fall to the
cold stone floor as her blood drops down the entrance of the Underworld realm. The uses
foreshadowing by Del Toro also plays in as a technique in depicting a predictive or
predetermined conclusion for the protagonist and what is in store for her later on in the movie.
In one scene when her mother is on the bed and the baby starts kicking she tells Ofelia to recite a
fable to her unborn brother to calm him down, her story is about pain and loss and the reward in
the end granted be eternal life. The fable she tells foreshadows the imagination she has for
hardships she faces in reality and her conclusion

1750BC), Late Egyptian (1550 700), Demotic (600BC AD500), Coptic (AD300 present), and
Greek (332 30BC). In fact, as the Coptic Church still uses the Coptic for liturgical languages, the
Egyptian language can be said that it is used for more than 5,000 years, which is longer than any
other languages. In addition, there were Hieroglyphs, which were sacred carvings of the words
of God. It was used shortly before 3100BC to 40AD and was used for carving on walls and
stones. Hieratic was a writing that was used instead of Hieroglyphs when wring on Papyrus, and
indeed, it was made to make writing letters easier for priests and scribes. Demotic was a more
simple writing system than previous ones, which was used widely by ordinary people. However,
Coptic was used by only ruling elites, which described Ancient Egyptian with Ancient Greek.
Indeed, the archeological material and pictorial evidence from Egypt shows that the writing were
mainly monumental and centered on the ruling group, religion, and on the symbols of Egypt as a
single polity . This explains a clear comparison in the usage of the written system of Mesopotamian
and Egyptian civilizations, which further can be interpreted within its politics as the Egyptian had a
more centralized ruling

Justice Is Justified By Plato s The Republic
For centuries, people have been asking the question, what is justice? Although justice is not
sincerely defined in Plato s The Republic, both Socrates and Thrasymachus enter into a deep
discussion over what justice truly is. After Socrates disproves Cephalus and Polemarchus
explanations of justice, Thrasymachus declares that justiceis simply what is in the interest of the
stronger party (338c). Furthermore, he debunks justice altogether, arguing that justice is the strong
exploiting the weak and that the unjust lifestyle is better than the just lifestyle. The two elements
that this paper will break down is Thrasymachus s idea of justice and how he thinks that being
unjust is better than being just. Initially, Thrasymachus s sentiment of justice is simply what is in
the interest of the stronger party (338c). This causes Socrates to question Thrasymachus on what
Thrasymachus means when he says interest . Socrates wants Thrasymachus to simplify what he
means by interest because everybody has different interests. For example, a bartender has the
interest of making drinks to satisfy his customers, while a computer programmer has the interest of
making programs to create advances in technology. As a result, Thrasymachus categorizes the
interest limited to only rulers and answers Socrates s question that interest is what is right , each
type of government enacts laws that are in its own interest, a democracy democratic laws, a tyranny
tyrannical ones and so on; and in

How Washington s Role And Legacy Has Been Manipulated By...
Kush Patel
Word Count: Edward G. Lengel, author of Inventing George Washington, brings a different
approach to writing historical books. He has collected and sifted through virtually all mediums of
Washington s life. Through his work I found a central theme of how Washington s role and legacy
has been manipulated by society. Lengel displays the way writers, critics, and religious leaders
changed George Washingtons identity for their own personal benefits; they have altered his
religious orientation and his public image in both good and bad ways.
George Washington s religious beliefs have always been altered or unclear to the American society.
Lengel ponders, Washington considered attendance at religious services to be a civic duty. He
believed that morality and the unfettered practice of religion ensured the prosperity of a well
organized society (77). Washington was only partially religious to please the common people.
He was selfless in doing what was in the best interest of his nation than himself. By taking the
role of president, he had to sacrifice his own beliefs. The Valley Forge prayer incident was
commonly disfigured by many. The story began when a Quaker, by the name of Isaac Potts, saw
Washington in prayer, according to Mason Locke Weems. After the initial story, others began
twisting it to their liking by adding horses or barns. As Lengel states, The image of Washington in
prayer became iconic (86). Artist painted Washington in various scenes depicting

Different Definitions For Cloud Computing Essay
Introduction There are many different definitions for cloud computing. The New Zealand
government has adopted the National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) definition that
defines cloud computing as: A model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on demand network
access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g. networks, servers, storage,
applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management
effort or service provider interaction. Task 1 Three vendors offering IaaS public cloud computing
services The provision of computing resources (i.e. processing, memory, storage and network) to
allow the customer to deploy and run their own operating systems and applications. Typically,
virtualisation technologies are used to enable multiple customers to share the computing resources.
The service provider is only responsible for managing and maintaining the underlying infrastructure
hardware and virtualisation hypervisor3. Examples of IaaS offerings include the government IaaS

Starwood Is A Hotel And Leisure Company
Starwood is a hotel and leisure company. The company has a significant presence in diverse
geographic markets, which helps it offset concentration risks. However, price war, fueled by intense
competition, could make Starwood s luxurious brands uncompetitive resulting in low market
penetration opportunities for the company. We know that many decisions made are normative
decision making. The company has many strengths as Starwood has strong brand portfolio in the
luxury and upper upscale segments of the lodging industry (Fox, 2016). They have a global
footprint with a strong loyalty program and patron following (Fox, 2016). These strengths put
Starwood in a unique position to maintain their brands as well as their potential value to buyers and
stock holders has much potential. The potential for growth is abundant, but Starwood has some
weaknesses that need better management. Compared to their competition, Starwood has a high
debt burden (SWOT Analysis, 2016). Unlike their competition, they still rely heavily on a 3rd
party reservations from the internet company (SWOT Analysis, 2016). Due to their strengths in
brand and loyalty, but weaknesses that are primarily rooted in poor oversight and management,
sets Starwood up for expansion or merger with another firm. The decisions Starwood makes along
a ten year trek is indicative of making themselves more attractive to a potential buyer. The Travel
Lodging segment is expected to grow in the United States and abroad.

Theories Of The Beringia Theory In North And South America
Most people wonder how people first arrived in the Americas. Well, many Archeologists have
looked at different sites in both North and South America. At the different sites, the archeologists
have found many different artifacts that help support different theories. There are four main
theories that have been investigated. First, the Beringia Theory. Second, the Solutrean s Hypothesis.
Next, Open Ocean. Finally, Coastal Migration. The Most plausible out of these theories is the
Solutrean s Hypothesis.
The Beringia theory is probably the most common theory out of all of them. This theory is that
people originally came across a land bridge from Russia to modern day Alaska. According to Ice
Age, New Discoveries documentary, this theory is said to have happened 11,500 years ago. The
reason why people moved along the land bridge was that animals were running there, and hunters
went wherever the meat was. People and animals also followed water and vegetation as they spread
out amongst the Americas. When the people were traveling over, they had to follow paths made by
some ice. According to Kids Past.com, after people started to cross the land bridge, they spread
out amongst the Americas, after many, many years. Typically, it took many generations of people
to spread. According to the Smithsonian Web Based Encyclopedia, humans and animals crossed
the land bridge 11,500. According to New York Times Article, New World s Earliest People Tests

Homework for Chapter 20 Essay
1. How much of our global energy supply do nuclear power, biomass energy, and hydroelectric
power contribute? How much of our global electricity do these three conventional energy
alternatives generate?
Biomass provides 10.8% of global primary energy use, nuclear power provides 6.5%, and
hydropower provides 2.2% of global primary energy use. Nuclear power generates 15.8% of the
world s electricity, and hydropower generates 15.9%.

Engineers move these control rods into and out of the water to maintain the fission reaction at the

3. In terms of greenhouse gas emissions, how does nuclear power compare to coal, oil, and natural
gas? How do hydropower and biomass energy compare?
Using conventional fission, nuclear power plants generate electricity without creating air pollution
from stack emissions as the energy is released from the breaking of the nucleus rather than the
combustion of the organic compounds in the fossil fuels that create carbon dioxide . In contrast,
combusting coal, oil, or natural gas emits sulfur dioxide(fossil fuels contain both organic and non
organic compounds that contain sulphur) that contributes to acidic deposition, particulate matter
that threatens human health, and carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that contribute to
global climate change. One might consider the indirect greenhouse emission of actually building a
nuclear fission reactor and also the resources that are required to obtain and purify the uranium
essential for the plant to run. Even after considering all the steps involved in building plants and
generating power, researchers from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have
calculated that nuclear power lowers emissions 4 150 times below the emissions from fossil fuel
combustion . IAEA scientists estimate that at current global rates of usage, nuclear

A Critical Phase Of Dmaic
Improve This is the critical phase of DMAIC. Here is where we conduct brainstorming sessions.
By brainstorming we will be able to identify all the possible solution/outcome. From these
possible solutions, we will be able to pick out the optimal solution. As soon as we find the
probable optimal solution to the current problem, we try to implement it. After implementation of
the optimal solution, the next step is to evaluate. After the evaluation is done we come to know
whether the solution which we have implemented is optimal or not. Our current problem that is
addressed in this project is regarding overheating and explosion of SAMSUNG smartphones.
After the brainstorming was done, several solutions were put forward in order to identify
possible reasons of the battery explosion. Following are the possible solutions: Avoid charging
and using phone simultaneously One of the major reasons identified was charging of the phone
and using is simultaneously. This is one of the common mistakes that occur in the case of most
users. When users charge their phone, and uses simultaneously then charging and discharging of
battery occurs at the same time. This is harmful for the battery and affects its life span. Avoid

The Day Of The Triffids Essay
The classic 20th century apocalyptic novel The day of the Triffids by John Wyndham follows
protagonist Bill Mason as fights to survive as his world plunges into chaos as everyone is turned
blind and a plague of man eating Triffids is unleashed on the now helpless world. The book
contains many hidden themes that s were relevant to the book s era. At the time, the cold war
between the United States and its NATO allies which included England, and the Soviet Union
and its allies caused panic in the population about an incoming nuclear apocalypse. This caused
many writers to create post apocalyptic novels such as The day of the Triffids . In the book the
Triffids are grown in nurseries on a massive scale across the world to produce the wonderful oil
that replaced fossil fuels and saved the world from global warming. Because of this the Triffids
are seen as a miracle and the saviors of the planet when the true nature of the Triffids is they really
are flesh eating plants that will consume the world. This conveys the theme that there is a good and

John Wyndham lived in England which was allies with the United States so the Soviet Union was
seen as the enemy. It seems interesting that Wyndham s choice for the origin of the Triffids would
be somewhere in Russia. He told them that the oil came from Russia (which still hid behind a
curtain of suspicion and secrecy) and that for an enormous sum of money he would endeavor to fly
out the seeds. This quote tells us that Wyndham wanted the reader to suspect that the Triffids came
from Russia. This would cause the reader to blame the Soviet Union for the Triffids which
ultimately killed humanity. Although this theme is not clearly present, Wyndham may have used
his influence over the public for more than just

Altitude sickness, or Acute Mountain Sickness Essay
To begin I would like to talk about Altitude sickness, or Acute Mountain Sickness. I will define
altitude sickness, talk about the symptoms, how to prevent altitude sickness, and how to treat it. I
will then talk about what untreated altitude sickness can lead to. Altitude sickness is an illness
you can get from ascending too high above sea level too quickly without acclimatizing to the
decrease in oxygen levels. Altitude sickness, also called acute mountain sickness, is caused by
exposure to low partial pressure of oxygen at high altitude. At high altitude atmospheric pressure
is lower than at sea level. Because of the lower pressure the air expands as it rises which causes it
to cool, thus high altitude air is cold. Normally the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Altitude sickness can also be mistaken for other illnesses like the flu so it is very important to

quickly as possible, oxygen should also be given if possible. Symptoms tend to improve with
descent but more severe symptoms may continue for several days. Early diagnosis is important!
The early stages of Altitude sickness are easier to treat and the faster you treat altitude sickness
the less likely it is that you can develop other more serious conditions. I will talk about these
other conditions later. Keys to preventing acute mountain sickness include: Climb the mountain

Nursing is one of the most stressful careers in healthcare. Long hours of direct patient care take

some point during his/her career (ANA, 2002). This percentage is similar to that of substance

As a professional, you are required to deal with situations outside of your beliefs and find avenues
to vent your frustration, grief and stress without harming the patients, yourself, or the relationship

me regarding this situation. We all know that stealing medications from patients for personal use is
wrong professional ly, personally and legally. Perhaps our lack of understanding is due to the
inability to relate to those with drug addiction.
All coworkers within an organization need to be educated to recognize potential issues of
narcotic abuse within the workplace. Since healthcare professionals are able to hide some signs
of abuse such as work absences, it may be more difficult to recognize a problem in the early
stages. Some physical signs to be aware of include: irritability, forgetfulness, isolation, and
decreased levels of motivation. Issues in personal life may also increase the chances of drug
abuse, such as: stress, family problems, a previous history of mental illness, and a history of prior
abuse (any type). Potential issues must be reported to the Nurse Manager as soon as possible. In
order for the organization to protect the safety of its personnel and patients, ethical standards of
practice must been routinely stressed within the workplace. Many

Personal Responsibility Reflection
Q1: How have your views on business and personal responsibility changed, if at all, over the course
of the semester?
Throughout the course of this semester, my views on business and personal responsibility changed
drastically. While completing the corporate social responsibility assignment as well as reading
about Bill Strickland s story and the Frontline Poisoned Waters video, I learned many new lessons
on the importance of social responsibility. For starters, the corporate social responsibility project
opened my eyes to all the positive impacts that large companies are making in the world. More
specifically, for my project, I researched Marriott International. Initially, I was unaware of all the
steps they take increase sustainability. Each year they take steps to cut down water waste, carbon
emission and landfill waste. This is a very tall task because they own over six thousand properties. I
was completely unaware that large companies similar to Marriott were concerned about the
environment.
Secondly, while reading Bill Strickland s Make the Impossible Possible I learned many helpful
lessons. One thing that stuck with me was Bill s ambition to chase his dreams. While working
with ceramics, he found something that he truly enjoyed, and he knew that crafting could help
influence others too. Though he grew up in a poor, destructive neighborhood, he didn t let that
stop him. When he finally opened up his first craftsman s guild I knew that he would have the
ability to make it special. After expansion and reassessment, Bill was finally make his dream a
reality by creating the beautiful Manchester Bidwell center. Although this was not an easy process,
he stuck with it and can now be very proud of what he created. Lastly, he shows that people should
never give up on their dreams and that people should give back to their community whenever
possible.
Lastly, the poisoned water video had a large impact on me. That video showed the results of what
happens when companies aren t sustainable and let waste build up. The video showed examples of
the waste accumulating in the Puget Sound as well as how farms are dealing with there waste
problems. The documentary was a little sad because it showed all the mutations

Abstract
According to Greek philosopher Heraclitus (2009), Change is the only constant . Understanding
that change is going to happen and how to deal with the change is essential for all leaders. John
Kotter reviews an eight stage process for creating major change in his book, Leading Change.
Understanding the difference between leading and managing is crucial for this process to have
success. When one leads, instead of manages, change takes place. Management is the processes of

The Automobile And The Environmental Impacts Of The...
When in 1885 Karl Benz designed, and developed the first 4 stroke engine that would later become
the very heart of the first automobile that we are familiar with today. At the time however, the early
inventors and pioneers of the automobile industry thought just of their work as a horseless carriage
and nothing more, none of them anticipated the age of the automobilethat was about to be ushered
in, for they just saw the new technology strictly in the context of what it was meant to replace. The
automobile however, developed into so much more, becoming one of the defining industries of the
entire 20th century and affecting people s lives in a multitude ways, but most especially the social
aspect. This essay would like to highlight the importance that the automobile had on the cultural
shift towards the phenomenon of suburbanization and the environmental impacts that ensued due to
the change in urban planning to accommodate for our car dependent culture. Ironically enough,
when the environmental impacts associated with automobiles are discussed, the one that is not
inherently apparent to us, specifically carbon emissions from vehicles is what takes much of the
limelight when compared to an issue that is rapidly unfolding right before we. The exponential
increase in urban sprawl not only involves the loss of massive amounts of natural habitat but also
dramatically increases the risk of flooding in these same suburbs. Disregarding the unsustainability

The Great Gatsby Alternate Ending Essay
Edmund went to respond to Goldie, but by the time his mouth opened, she d already exited the
water, and his white hot gaze was upon his brother. He d noted the manner in which his sibling s
fingers deliberately brushed Goldie s skin as she slipped back into the dress, and decided it best
not to speak. Edmund wasn t certain he d be able to control his anger and annoyance if he did.
That damn Walt, always interfering. The elder boy s mood wasn t assisted by the smirk Walt
threw in his direction as he grasped the young woman s elbow; the woman Edmund himself had
just recently been holding and kissing; as if to lay claim to her, or the mocking tone of his voice
as he instructed his brother to collect Goldie s belongings. As he stared, and curled his hands into
fists first under the water, the elder Bear thought that his face must be brighter than the scorching,
blood red sun of earlier that day, and his words, when he finally mustered the composure to speak,
were uttered through clenched teeth. Goodbye Goldie. Meanwhile, Walt s face had been lit

His gaze caught his brothers, and he briefly poked his tongue out as he exited the river; shirtless,
and with gleaming droplets of water dripping down his broad chest, and the muscles of his torso

stiffened, and his mouth fell open at his brother s obvious display as he collected Goldie s
possessions, then caught up with them. Yep, my brother is a comedian. Edmund grinned as
he extended a hand to apply a good natured smack upside his sibling s head. Or one, which to an
outsider would appear good natured, but from extended practice, contained much greater force than

The Tunnel By William Gass
Some people believe that lies will always be bitter in the end, no matter how sweet you make
them in the beginning. In William Gass The Tunnel, he expounds the validity of this belief by
taking the reader on an emotionally evolving journey, as he recounts the self realization of a young
boy, who s frightening lie unravels in front of not only his own eyes, but also the readers. Gass
successfully enriches this story with striking imagery, symbolism, and comparisons; exposing how
no matter how sweet you make a lie in the beginning, it will always turn bitter in the end.
The first paragraph plays an imperative role in the excerpt, for it introduces the reader to the
emotional despondency of the boy. William Gass successfully strikes the reader from the
beginning, for his two word opening, lime slush (line 1), prompts the reader to not only envisage
a lime slush, but also taste its sugary sweetness. However, the sweetness this imagery provides is
short lasting, for they are soon bombarded with countless caesuras, as he describes how slush is
supposed to be water. That s what slush is. It certainly isn t sherbet! It wasn t a nice green. And
there didn t seem to be that much of it. (lines 2 3). The disappointment that entrenches the boy in
these short but concrete statements, successfully introduces the reader to his emotional bitterness,
for not even the lime slush s sweetness can sweeten it. The colour imagery does not stop there, for
he describes how strawberry always

Media Violence And Its Effects
Media violence exposure has been investigated as a risk factor for aggression behavior for years.
The impact of exposure to violence in the media the long term development and short term
development of aggressive behavior has been documented. Aggression is caused by several factors,
of which media violenceis one. Research investigating the effects of media violence in conjunction
with other predictors of aggressionsuch as; environmental factors and dysfunction within the
family household, is needed in order to better understand its contribution to aggressive behavior.
Furthermore, the debate of whether or not how media violence leads to aggression has received
renewed attention following tragic events; Sandy Hook, Umpqua Community College in
Kosenburg, Oregon, 2012 Aurora shooting, traumatic news coverage, a 8 year old boy
intentionally shot and killed elderly caregiver and countless other events; all of these casualties
were caused by media violence. Media violence can be a murder simulator; by teaching and guiding
how to commit aggressive and violent crimes. Aggression is usually defined by behavioral
scientists as behavior that is intended to harm another person. Common forms of aggression are
physical (for example, punching), verbal (for example, saying or writing hurtful things to another
person), and relational (for example, intentionally and publicly not inviting someone to a social
function to harm their social relationships). Violence usually is

Windigo As A Descriptive Language Of Horror
Why do people enjoy being afraid? When were scared it can bring people closer to one another
and it can be fun. But some people go even further, seeking out horror movies and complex
haunted houses that are made to scare the daylights out of them. What possesses people to seek
out experiences that make them tremble with fear? Experts say Enjoyment likely comes not
from the fear itself, but from the physical and emotional toll it has on us,this is the allure of
fear, the reason some people like being scared such as people that love the adrenaline rush, things
to kinda get them pumped, like roller coasters and bunjee jumping ,or people could love this
feeling simply because of a chemical released from our brain called dopamine, its like our pleasure

 • 2. Age Of Disillusionment Research Paper Peltier 1 William Peltier Mrs. Hitt English III Honors 2nd 30 January 2017 The Age of Disillusionment The Age of Disillusionment can be defined as a time when tragedies such as war and poverty caused many to lose their naГЇve and carefree way of life. During this time, people believed life was dangerous, and they were afraid of what would happen next in their lives. The fear they felt during this time was a result of World War I , World War II, the Great Depression, and the devastation they brought (Hitt). Much like President Woodrow Wilsons War Message to Congress and Phillip Larkin s poem MCMXIV, the Age of Disillusionment was filled with hopelessness and fear as a result of tragic events such as the sinking of the passenger ship, the Lusitania. On May 1, 1915, the British passenger ship, the Lusitania, set sail from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He knew he had to do something to stop the tyrannical German government from wreaking any more havoc upon the lives of civilians (Wilson). President Wilson s speech is very characteristic of the Age of Disillusionment because, like many works during the age, his speech is about people coming to terms with the fact that their loved ones have died and how they feel hopeless for a better life. During this age, people began to question whether they were safe (Hitt). President Wilson says the only way to ensure a safer life and better future for all, was to go to war with Germany. He knew that people would be scared to take such a large risk, and knew that many would die, but he also knew that it must be done. Four days after his speech, the United States of America officially entered World War I (Wilson). The amount of loss that was to come in the war would only lead to Americans being more fearful and the feeling of disillusionment during the age would only grow. As a result, the literary aspect of the Age of Disillusionment flourished and quickly became one of the most influential ages in American ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
 • 3. Imperialism Spread Of China And The Opium War When imperialism spread to China: Events leading to the Opium War Have you ever wondered what it would be like if an event in history ceased to happen or the effect of a slight change in the past and if it would drastically change the future? Like the butterfly affect? I recently came across some historical text about China. During the time of imperialism, a major shift had happened in China that caused an entire dynasty to fall. The collapse caused a half century long recovery period and a change in world trade. This event was the Opium War. The Opium War in China occurred in two time spans, 1839 1842 and 1856 1860, however, I am just going to discuss the first one. During the 19th century, global trade had spiked interest in many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Would the country have collapsed on itself? Throughout history Britain consistently continued taking over and or imperializing multiple countries to then rely on them for survival and wealth. Could this have been a possible future for China? Today the United States is China s major agricultural source. Yet, if this event had not transpired would China still be able to produce its own food? Would China today even exist or would it have been consumed by another superior country? During the reign of Qing Emperor Daoguang (1820 1850), foreign trade was only allowed in the commercial port of Canton. Due to the foreign trade policy, for Britain to obtain Chinese goods they would have to purchase them with silver. Silver was China s currency at that time. The English speaking merchants were not allowed to learn Chinese and were to be harshly punished if they left the port to enter China. This frustrated the British East India Company. They had very few restrictions from foreign ports and companies. The reasoning behind this was they had already seized control of them. This gave Great Britain a massive advantage: A monopoly system of the seas. A stem of related problems began to emerge for Britain. They did not have their own supply of silver and would purchase it from Mexico so it could be used to purchase large quantities of Chinese Tea. Tea and sugar made a marvelous mildly addicting drug food... (qtd. Dunn) Years went by of accelerated ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

While we are doing ordinary things like eating, or opening a window, bad things can be happening to others and it is as easy as looking up, to see what is actually going on. Auden also uses bad syntax in the last line of the poem, had somewhere to get to and sailed calmly on. Auden may have chosen to write in this free form to demonstrate that people are so indifferent to what is going on around them that it does not make any difference what form the poem is written in, as it will only be overlooked and not given any attention. The form of the poem allows the reader to consider the ways in which suffering is masked by the frenzy of everyday life and that even the acknowledged suffering of others does not seem to be of any concern to anybody but the sufferer. Auden s poem is a criticism of human perceptions and how we use them to detect, or suppress human suffering. In the first half of the poem Auden compares versions of indifference by portraying youth and age, animals, and humans (Shmoop, 2014). In the first few lines of the poem, Auden comments on the perceptions of the Old Masters and how they were never wrong in their discernment of suffering. As life is a spiral of ups and downs, whether it may be good or bad, happy or sad, opposites will balance each other, for it is the essence of life. He discusses the necessity of an empowered Great Britain in the shadow of World War II; as well as his confidence within the strength of the British people. This speech s lasting impact was reinforced by it s usage of the three appeals: ethos, logos, and pathos. These appeals address the ethical, logical, and emotional ideas and undertones within a piece. Churchill s iconic speech truly encapsulates these three appeals within every word. Ethos is considered to be the ethical aspect of a piece. In other words: is the information and speaker reputable and trustworthy? This appeal is clearly demonstrated within Blood, Toil, Tears, and Sweat . For example, Churchill states In this crisis I hope I may be pardoned if I do not address the House at any length today. Pathophysiology: In a normal, healthy lung, air travels through a highway of airways, called bronchioles, to eventually reach tiny air sacs, called alveoli, the site of gas exchange with the blood capillaries.1 The right and left lungs are separated by fissures into lobes and are further divided into segments and then into lobules, which contain the alveoli.1 In pneumonia, a common inflammatory and infectious disease of the lung, fluid accumulates within the alveoli and/or the lobe, which reduces the surface area exposed to air making it difficult to breath.3 Typically, the body is able to filter out germs that invade the respiratory system by using defense mechanisms such as the immune system, the structure of the nose and throat, coughing, and cilia; however, some germs are able to reach the lungs to cause infection, especially in those who are immunocompromised.3 For example, someone who is in a medically induced coma due to a stroke, is unable to cough, and as a result, the germs remain in the airway. Once the germs enter the lungs, the immune system responds by attacking.3 This causes the alveoli to inflame, turn red, and fill up with fluid and pus, which are the symptoms of pneumonia.3 There are three common bacteria that cause pneumonia Streptococcus pneumonia, Legionella pneumophilia, and Mycoplasma pneumonia.3 Streptococcus pneumoniae or pneumococcus are the most common ... • 16. Relationship Between Convergence And Harry Potter Convergence has become somewhat vital to the success of a screen text; the number of mediums it engages with can, to some extent, affect how much of a fan base it creates. The power of the media producer and the power of the media consumer interact in unpredictable ways stated by Henry Jenkins. (2006:2) Participatory culture has, in some cases, created the potential for more enriched franchises that surpass their original purpose, some screen texts can develop a lot further than expected due to how well received they are. The popularity of the most recognizable film franchises could be seen as the product of convergence within fan culture. In this essay, I am going to discuss the relationship between Harry Potterfans and convergence and the various ways the fans have constructed alternate views of the franchise. I will discuss how Harry Potter has become globally successful through its convergence and fan culture. Harry Potter is a relevant case study of convergence because it extends past its original platform, which was books; there are now Harry Potter video games, merchandise, themed websites and, the most recent of which, theme parks. In this case, Universal, a company in partnership with Warner Brothers who own Harry Potter, opened a Harry Potter segment to their original theme park in 2014 in Florida. This was an effort to bring back the former popularity it once had, such as when the first book was written in 1997 by J.K.Rowling. The series has become a global ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Horror Film Genre Horror films have been around for over 100 years, petrifying people and bringing their worst fears to life but still they can t get enough of this sick and gory genre that is unbelievably entertaining and captivating to the audience. Horror comes with many sub genres from your bloody slashers like Friday the 13th to your Supernatural Horrors like The Exorcist, but in the end they all seem to do their job by scaring you and leaving you with nightmares for weeks on end. Usually Horror s films have the same character stereotypes such as the nerd, the jock, the slut, the virgin, the junky, the tough hero, the unlikely hero and last but not least the masked murderer, but yet they all play their own part in the making of these horrors movies whether it is the extremely slow walk the killer does but almost always catches the victim, or the unwise decision to split up and investigate where the unusual noise is coming from. Every film uses pro filmic codes, despite of what genre it is. Location, lighting styles, props, costumes and compositions are all used. In horrors location is a very big factor to the plot, as it contributes to the storyline and without a certain location the viewer would get quite confused as to where it s set, some locations that are frequently used are places like the woods, summer camps and just normal homes. Props used can vary from many different items whether it is from the killer s life ending weapons or something as simple as jewellery. Lightning styles ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Pan s Labyrinth Analysis Essay Pan s Labyrinth Award winning filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro delivers a unique, richly imagined epic with Pan s Labyrinth released in 2006, a gothic fairy tale set against the postwar repression of Franco s Spain. Del Toro s sixth and most ambitious film, Pan s Labyrinth harnesses the formal characteristics of classic folklore to a 20th Century period. Del Toro portrays a child as the key character, to communicate that children minds are not cemented. The use of close ups and tracking shots emphasize the hysterical, tragic mood of the story. This causes the audience to feel maudlin and affected. An example is the frame of a close up high angled shot when we see Captain Vidal shoot Ofelia. We realize the gravity of the crime, watching Ofelia fall to the cold stone floor as her blood drops down the entrance of the Underworld realm. The uses foreshadowing by Del Toro also plays in as a technique in depicting a predictive or predetermined conclusion for the protagonist and what is in store for her later on in the movie. In one scene when her mother is on the bed and the baby starts kicking she tells Ofelia to recite a fable to her unborn brother to calm him down, her story is about pain and loss and the reward in the end granted be eternal life. The description, developed form could be explained as the Egyptian writing was able to describe every spoken language into a written language, even though it was not an alphabetical system. Ancient Egyptian language had several forms and developed as time passed by: Old Egyptian (2650 2135BC), Middle Egyptian (2000 1750BC), Late Egyptian (1550 700), Demotic (600BC AD500), Coptic (AD300 present), and Greek (332 30BC). In fact, as the Coptic Church still uses the Coptic for liturgical languages, the Egyptian language can be said that it is used for more than 5,000 years, which is longer than any other languages. In addition, there were Hieroglyphs, which were sacred carvings of the words of God. It was used shortly before 3100BC to 40AD and was used for carving on walls and stones. Hieratic was a writing that was used instead of Hieroglyphs when wring on Papyrus, and indeed, it was made to make writing letters easier for priests and scribes. Demotic was a more simple writing system than previous ones, which was used widely by ordinary people. However, Coptic was used by only ruling elites, which described Ancient Egyptian with Ancient Greek. Indeed, the archeological material and pictorial evidence from Egypt shows that the writing were mainly monumental and centered on the ruling group, religion, and on the symbols of Egypt as a single polity . • 20. Justice Is Justified By Plato s The Republic For centuries, people have been asking the question, what is justice? Although justice is not sincerely defined in Plato s The Republic, both Socrates and Thrasymachus enter into a deep discussion over what justice truly is. After Socrates disproves Cephalus and Polemarchus explanations of justice, Thrasymachus declares that justiceis simply what is in the interest of the stronger party (338c). Furthermore, he debunks justice altogether, arguing that justice is the strong exploiting the weak and that the unjust lifestyle is better than the just lifestyle. The two elements that this paper will break down is Thrasymachus s idea of justice and how he thinks that being unjust is better than being just. Initially, Thrasymachus s sentiment of justice is simply what is in the interest of the stronger party (338c). This causes Socrates to question Thrasymachus on what Thrasymachus means when he says interest . Socrates wants Thrasymachus to simplify what he means by interest because everybody has different interests. For example, a bartender has the interest of making drinks to satisfy his customers, while a computer programmer has the interest of making programs to create advances in technology. As a result, Thrasymachus categorizes the interest limited to only rulers and answers Socrates s question that interest is what is right , each type of government enacts laws that are in its own interest, a democracy democratic laws, a tyranny tyrannical ones and so on; and in ... Lengel, author of Inventing George Washington, brings a different approach to writing historical books. He has collected and sifted through virtually all mediums of Washington s life. Through his work I found a central theme of how Washington s role and legacy has been manipulated by society. Lengel displays the way writers, critics, and religious leaders changed George Washingtons identity for their own personal benefits; they have altered his religious orientation and his public image in both good and bad ways. George Washington s religious beliefs have always been altered or unclear to the American society. Lengel ponders, Washington considered attendance at religious services to be a civic duty. He believed that morality and the unfettered practice of religion ensured the prosperity of a well organized society (77). Washington was only partially religious to please the common people. He was selfless in doing what was in the best interest of his nation than himself. By taking the role of president, he had to sacrifice his own beliefs. The Valley Forge prayer incident was commonly disfigured by many. The story began when a Quaker, by the name of Isaac Potts, saw Washington in prayer, according to Mason Locke Weems. After the initial story, others began twisting it to their liking by adding horses or barns. As Lengel states, The image of Washington in prayer became iconic (86). First, the Beringia Theory. Second, the Solutrean s Hypothesis. Next, Open Ocean. Finally, Coastal Migration. The Most plausible out of these theories is the Solutrean s Hypothesis. In contrast, combusting coal, oil, or natural gas emits sulfur dioxide(fossil fuels contain both organic and non organic compounds that contain sulphur) that contributes to acidic deposition, particulate matter that threatens human health, and carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that contribute to global climate change. One might consider the indirect greenhouse emission of actually building a nuclear fission reactor and also the resources that are required to obtain and purify the uranium essential for the plant to run. • 36. Personal Responsibility Reflection Q1: How have your views on business and personal responsibility changed, if at all, over the course of the semester? Throughout the course of this semester, my views on business and personal responsibility changed drastically. While completing the corporate social responsibility assignment as well as reading about Bill Strickland s story and the Frontline Poisoned Waters video, I learned many new lessons on the importance of social responsibility. For starters, the corporate social responsibility project opened my eyes to all the positive impacts that large companies are making in the world. More specifically, for my project, I researched Marriott International. Initially, I was unaware of all the steps they take increase sustainability. Each year they take steps to cut down water waste, carbon emission and landfill waste. This is a very tall task because they own over six thousand properties. I was completely unaware that large companies similar to Marriott were concerned about the environment. Secondly, while reading Bill Strickland s Make the Impossible Possible I learned many helpful lessons. One thing that stuck with me was Bill s ambition to chase his dreams. While working with ceramics, he found something that he truly enjoyed, and he knew that crafting could help influence others too. Though he grew up in a poor, destructive neighborhood, he didn t let that stop him. When he finally opened up his first craftsman s guild I knew that he would have the ability to make it special. After expansion and reassessment, Bill was finally make his dream a reality by creating the beautiful Manchester Bidwell center. Although this was not an easy process, he stuck with it and can now be very proud of what he created. Lastly, he shows that people should never give up on their dreams and that people should give back to their community whenever possible. Lastly, the poisoned water video had a large impact on me. That video showed the results of what happens when companies aren t sustainable and let waste build up. The video showed examples of the waste accumulating in the Puget Sound as well as how farms are dealing with there waste problems. The documentary was a little sad because it showed all the mutations ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Steele Lipscomb University Abstract According to Greek philosopher Heraclitus (2009), Change is the only constant . Understanding that change is going to happen and how to deal with the change is essential for all leaders. John Kotter reviews an eight stage process for creating major change in his book, Leading Change. Understanding the difference between leading and managing is crucial for this process to have success. When one leads, instead of manages, change takes place. Management is the processes of an organization. It is the day to day structure that produces products or services. Good management is important for a business to succeed, but it is quite different from leadership. Good leadership produces useful change. It casts a vision and a buy in that ... On paper, it can look like I am just asking for more money for another program. However, when you put a face on a story, it becomes real. I plan to videotape intercultural students telling their stories as well as creating print pieces. I believe that hearing or reading their story will give others a glimpse into the life of an undocumented Latino student, an African American student, or a student from another country. Their needs are different and so I need to effectively communicate the new vision and strategy I have to enrich their futures through the Office of Intercultural Development. • 39. The Automobile And The Environmental Impacts Of The... When in 1885 Karl Benz designed, and developed the first 4 stroke engine that would later become the very heart of the first automobile that we are familiar with today. At the time however, the early inventors and pioneers of the automobile industry thought just of their work as a horseless carriage and nothing more, none of them anticipated the age of the automobilethat was about to be ushered in, for they just saw the new technology strictly in the context of what it was meant to replace. The automobile however, developed into so much more, becoming one of the defining industries of the entire 20th century and affecting people s lives in a multitude ways, but most especially the social aspect. This essay would like to highlight the importance that the automobile had on the cultural shift towards the phenomenon of suburbanization and the environmental impacts that ensued due to the change in urban planning to accommodate for our car dependent culture. Ironically enough, when the environmental impacts associated with automobiles are discussed, the one that is not inherently apparent to us, specifically carbon emissions from vehicles is what takes much of the limelight when compared to an issue that is rapidly unfolding right before we. The exponential increase in urban sprawl not only involves the loss of massive amounts of natural habitat but also dramatically increases the risk of flooding in these same suburbs. • 41. The Tunnel By William Gass Some people believe that lies will always be bitter in the end, no matter how sweet you make them in the beginning. In William Gass The Tunnel, he expounds the validity of this belief by taking the reader on an emotionally evolving journey, as he recounts the self realization of a young boy, who s frightening lie unravels in front of not only his own eyes, but also the readers. Gass successfully enriches this story with striking imagery, symbolism, and comparisons; exposing how no matter how sweet you make a lie in the beginning, it will always turn bitter in the end. The first paragraph plays an imperative role in the excerpt, for it introduces the reader to the emotional despondency of the boy. William Gass successfully strikes the reader from the beginning, for his two word opening, lime slush (line 1), prompts the reader to not only envisage a lime slush, but also taste its sugary sweetness. However, the sweetness this imagery provides is short lasting, for they are soon bombarded with countless caesuras, as he describes how slush is supposed to be water. That s what slush is. It certainly isn t sherbet! It wasn t a nice green. And there didn t seem to be that much of it. (lines 2 3). The disappointment that entrenches the boy in these short but concrete statements, successfully introduces the reader to his emotional bitterness, for not even the lime slush s sweetness can sweeten it. The colour imagery does not stop there, for he describes how strawberry always ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
