Columbia University initiated a chain reaction in order to create a nuclear fission bomb using U 235
but their attempts failed. Later with further research Enrico Fermi achieved the world s first controlled
nuclear chain reaction which lead to the development of a nuclear bomb using U 235. U 235 is one of
the few fuels that is able to undergo induced fission. This occurs due to it having neutrons fired at the

In order for the bomb to occur the subcritical masses must be brought together to form a supercritical
mass, this provides enough neutrons to create and maintain a fission reaction. This is done through a
neutron generator. This is a generator containing a small pellet of beryllium and polonium which are

The foil is broken when the subcritical masses combine and polonium emits alpha particles, the alpha
particles collide with beryllium 9 producing beryllium 8 and free neutrons, these neutrons start the
fission reaction.

explodes. This occurs by containing the fission reaction with tamper which is a dense material usually
made of Urainium 238. The tamper gets heated and expands as the fission core expands; the tamper

between. It is not such a black and white situation and when it comes to properly disciplining a police
officer it can become difficult to do so especially when that officer has either been on the force a long

once and they claim it will never happen again. These types of things make it much harder to decide
what the right discipline may be for that officer.

pornographic websites on the company computers. When he is confronted with the allegation, the
officer denies this allegation but upon further investigation the computer crimes analyst proves that it
was this officer that was using the computer to access these websites. When confronted with this
information, the officer then admits to the wrongdoing but claims he will never do it again. This
officer has only been in trouble once before over ten years ago for a traffic violation and is otherwise a
good officer. As the Chief of Police it is now my decision to choose whether this officer should be
terminated of his duties or if he should face severe disciplinary actions.
