Strategic And Financial Objectives Of Sainsbury
Investment Ratios:
Sainsbury s 2013 report states that maintaining a strong / efficient capital base will be key to fulfilling
their strategic and financial objectives. This is basically the shareholder s initial equity / monies used
to buy shares in the business plus any retained earnings. The capital base is a useful a benchmark for
measuring returns relative to initial outlay investment (Investopedia, 2014).
Sainsbury s manages its capital structure by buying/selling capital, issuing additional shares or buying
back shares, varying its debt portfolio, adapting dividend payment schedules and leasing capital
(land/property).
Earning targets involve covering the underlying earnings for the ordinary dividend at a minimum of
1.5 times and increasing cover in the medium term to 2 times.
The Dividend Payout Ratio shows Sainsbury s holding quite a consistent return for shareholders.
Indeed citing a 5.27% increase on 2012/2013 to 50.16 (2013). These were reduced by 10.91% by the
2013/2014 trading period, closing at 44.69. Similarly Tesco Dividend Payout Ratio figures suggest a
level period from 2009 2012 at 41.93. The ratio figure rose exponentially, by 2253.11% to 986.66 by
2013, due largely to the huge 95.74% reduction in profit for the year of just £120M. Evidence that the
situation is recovering somewhat is the published increase in profit of 708.33% to close at £970M in
2013. Further subsequent reductions in the 2013/2014 period of 87.58% closes with the ratio specified

Homelessness And The Homeless Youth
Homelessness is a major problem in the United States. An incredibly vulnerable group is the homeless
youth due to their young age and lack of education. According to Edidin, Ganim, Hunter, Karnik
(2012) on any particular night in the United States there are ~2 million homeless youth living on the
streets, in shelters, or in other temporary accommodation. Youth become homeless for multiple
reasons whether it be because they have aged out of foster care, ran from home, were kicked out of
their home, or because they have become homeless along with their family members. Within the
umbrella categorization of homeless youth there are high at risk subgroups, common misconceptions,
and a serious concern of lack of support and medical services. Homeless youth face an abundance of
challenges, especially if they are on their own, such as finding food, shelter, income, and potential
medical expenses. Some youth experience additional hardship by facing the effects of abuse they
endured at their previous place of residence. According to the National Conference of State
Legislators (2013) 46 percent of runaway and homeless youth reported physical abuse, 38 percent
reported emotional abuse, and 17 percent reported being forced into unwanted sexual activity by a
family or household member. Therefore, the chances of emotional vulnerability are high. A common
misconception of homeless youth is that even if they do become homeless they are not homeless for
long. The National Alliance to End

Andrew Carnegie s Impact On Society
Between 1865 and 1901, Andrew Carnegie played a great role in innovation and made America the
most major industrial nation in the world (www.socyberty.com). Living a destitute early life, Carnegie
went to night school and educated himself as much as he could as a child (www.britannica.com).
Because he could read and write, Carnegie, the only son of a weaver, became one of the richest men in
America (www.myinterestingfacts.com). Carnegie warms hearts of society with one of his most
compelling quotes which states I began to learn what poverty meant. He would later write, It was
burnt into my heart when that my father had to beg for work. Then and there came the resolve that I
would cure that when I got to become a man (www.pbs.org). The ... Show more content on

He stated, You have to keep the money only for the necessity of the family. The rest of the money that
you own should be utilized to increase the value of society (myinterestingdfacts.com). Carnegie so
firmly believed that everyone should not hoard all of their wealth; he thought that everyone should
donate. He believed that everyone should give their money to make the world around them a better
place for everyone, including them. This quote explains why he granted over ninety percent of all of
his wealth by the time he died. Hebrews 13:16 Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have,
for such sacrifices are pleasing to God (openbible.info). Although Carnegie donated all of his wealth,
nothing would have changed if society did not utilize the money wisely. Carnegie once said, You

Essay On Irish Immigration To America
The mid late 1800 s, immigration is rampant within the United States, approximately 12,000,000
foreigners are attempting to enter the country, searching for a second chance or a fresh start ( Rise of
Industrial America, 1876 1900 ). Among the many nationalities immigrating were the Irish, coming to
the Land of The Free in an attempt to escape the famine, disease, and poverty that lingered from the
Great Potato Famine. The potential for a clean slate was so tempting that between 1820 and 1930, as
many as 4.5 million Irish came to America ( Irish Catholic Immigration to America ). However,
despite the promise of opportunity, the Irish was not welcomed, nor were they particularly wanted.
The Irish faced considerable obstacles when they first arrived in ... Show more content on

The answer can be simplified down to racism. Racism is a problem, it has always been a problem, it
will most likely always be a problem. The Irish dealt with extreme prejudice and hatred when the
arrived here, today the target of abuse are the Mexicans and Muslims. Two peoples that merely did as
everyone else did, they came to America looking for a second chance. While yes, there is validity to
the notion that terrorist attacks in the country have been caused by Muslims, and that there are
multitudes of illegal Mexican immigrants, that does not sanction being able to discriminate against an
entire population for the acts of some. To truly learn from the heinous ways of one s predecessors, one
must must go back and see what was wrong and really make an effort to prevent it from happening
again. We must go back and view the sins of those who came before us and take heed of the lessons to
learn, and be more tolerant and kind to those around us, not judging based on race, culture, or
ethnicity. We must learn to accept

Media Influence on Eating Disorders Essay
With eating disorders on the rise today, the media plays an important role in affecting self esteem,
leading a large amount of young adults to develop eating disorders. Many adolescents see the
overbearing thin celebrities and try to reach media s level of thinness and ideal body weight. Sixty
nine of the girls reported that magazine pictures influenced their idea of the perfect body shape
(Field). Not only is being thin associated with other positive characteristics such as, lovable, popular,
beautiful, and sexy, but being overweight is connected with negative characteristics like fat, ugly,
unpopular, and lazy. Therefore media is the distinct social pressure of operating to influence people to
be thin and causing eating disorders. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Scientist have also found a new link that connects eating disorders to sever physiological problems.
People with anorexia or bulimia appear to have deficient amounts of serotonin, a brain chemical
associated with moods and emotions, circulating in their brains. The lack of serotonin is also linked to
people with depression (Chang). It is safe to state that another cause of eating disorders is depression.
The causes of depression are perhaps when people see the beautiful models, they depressed because
they don t look like them, so they long to look like them, and develop unhealthy eating habits.
When people look at the advertisements, movies, shows, and commercials and compare themselves to
the models, they look fat. They look and feel a lot larger because the models and examples they are
comparing themselves to are so unhealthy and skinny. Model Kate Moss is dangerously underweight
weighing ninety five pounds and standing five feet seven, this is thirty percent below the ideal body
weight (Field). In reality it is the reader who is more than likely to already have a healthy weight. The
models that everyone worships and compares themselves to, are unhealthy, underweight, and some
have fully developed eating disorders. A study found that twenty five percent of Playboy centerfolds

The Importance Of No Motion In Baseball
Baseball is a sport that has been around since the 18th century. Baseball is referred to as America s
pastime because of all the history and tradition behind the game. Alexander Cartwright developed the
basic rules of the game as we now know it today. On September 23, 1845, he organized the
Knickerbocker Baseball Club of New York. The first game was played in Hoboken, New Jersey.
Baseball is a great sport to watch and play however many athletes who play this game become very
injury prone. No motion in baseball is very natural. The baseball throwing motion, where players
bring your arm all the way behind your body and whip it forward, can put a lot of strain on a player s
arm and elbow. A pitcher in particular is someone who throws a ball sometimes more than a hundred
times a game.
Although many strength and conditioning programs have been developed to help player strength their
arms to reduce the risk of injury many players still get hurt. These strength and ... Show more content

So right off the bat you can already tell that these two articles contradict each other. Studies from the
Henry Ford Health System show that pitchers are less likely to reach even their pre surgery
performance level, no less exceed them. Vasilios (Bill) Moutzouros, M.D., a Henry Ford orthopedic
surgeon and the study s senior author said,
Tommy John surgery is an effective surgery and most pitchers get back to pitching after surgery. But it
s not going to improve their level of performance,There s been a perception that the surgery will make
you better. Our findings debunk that perception. Eighty to 90 percent of major league pitchers will get
back to pitching at the major league level but they just won t be as effective as they were before injury
Doctors conducting this study actually found a link between the surgery and decline in player

The Goal of Education is the Student Discovering the Power...
I know of no more important goal in education than that the child shall discover the power of his or
her own mind. And I know of no more important source of that discovery for every child, than the
inquiry that lives in continuing exploratory in the classroom. (Lindfors, 1999, p.247)
Kindergarten is the place where children explore real experiences and know how world works. They
start gradually to construct knowledge and transform their curiosities into thoughts and questions. By
wondering to find answers, children find themselves engaged in scientific thinking aimed to solve
everyday problems. This approach needs to be encouraged and developed in an educational setting
where teachers play major role in changing curriculum and organizing instructions to meet children
needs (Poon, Tan Tan, 2009).
Our children, in kindergarten, are exposed to direct instruction method. The problem is that teachers
are not aware that using this method will not lead children to learn science. This method is no longer
appropriate. World has changed, education has changed and young children should master new skills
in thinking. They must develop new understanding of modern life and be able to master new practical
issues .Using the direct method restrain kids from exploring world of science. We must give children
chances to develop new skills and become life long learners. Teachers, who are resisting the change,
are ignorant of the fact that what they are doing in

The Complex And Interesting Optical Properties Essay
The complex and interesting optical properties can be shown clearly on Nanostructured metals the
collective oscillations of the conduction electrons termed plasmons lead to most striking phenomenon
encountered in these structures are resonances . Plasmon modes exist in a number of geometries and in
various metals most importantly in noble metals such as gold, copper and silver. Under certain
circumstances plasmons are excited by light, which leads to strong light scattering and absorption and
an enhancement of the local electromagnetic field. In 1989, based upon calculations, Neeves and
Birnboim proposed that a composite spherical particle with a dielectric core and a metallic shell could
produce SPR modes with a much larger range of wavelengths. The first nanoshells were made by
Zhou et al. In the 1990 s. They used a Au2S core surrounded by a gold shell. Variations of these shells
made it possible to shift the standard gold colloid plasmon resonance peak from ~520 nm up to ~900
nm. There was a limit however, of less than 40 nm on the size of nanoshell that they could achieve due
to the chemistry of their synthesis reactions. The process also produced large amounts of gold colloid
as a secondary product which gave an additional absorption peak at ~520 nm. Halas and coworkers
synthesized a new type of gold nanoshell that overcame many of the limitations of the Au2S core type
nanoshell. The new method replaced the Au2S core with a silica core and made it possible to exert

Comparing Hinduism Christianity And Islam

Looking at Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam on a Boarder Scale
Christianity, Islam, and Hinduism all share similarities, but they also share differences as well.
Christianity and Islam are Abrahamic religions. Hinduism on the other hand originated from the
eastern part of the world. Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam are all religions who have guidelines on
what they consider their right way of living in order to achieve an afterlife.
While reading these four assigned readings, there were more similarities between Islam and
Christianity. Hinduism is more along with itself because it is almost the complete opposite. Each of
these religions believe in good and evil, and they also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Just like the Hindus, the Christians and the Muslims believed that if you do good that good things will
happen to you. All three beliefs give their followers guidelines on how to live right so good things can
happen to them. In Christianity, the good people can go to heaven. In Matthew 7:21, Jesus says in his
sermon, Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one
who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. You have to do the will of God in order to get to
heaven. In the law of Karma, the Hindu faith believes when you do well on earth that you can be
reincarnated into something better than when you were here on earth. Of course since good things
happen to those who do good, bad things happen to those who don t do as well. For Christians, the not
so good people can go to hell, and in the Hindu faith the non believers can be reincarnated into
something worse than that of an insect. The Muslims believe just like Christians that there is a force of
evil, Satan or the

Dissociation Theory Of Hypnosis
What is hypnosis? Hypnosis is when a person is in a highly susceptible state of consciousness where
they are open to suggestion. Typically, it is used to help relax/calm a person, control/alleviate pain,
and recover from whatever they re experiencing. Being susceptible to suggestion makes it easy to be
affected mentally and physically. The hypnotist uses this to guide you or influence you into a certain
situation. When being hypnotized, the subject is in charge and can t be forced against their will. Which
means people can only be hypnotized if they re willing to be.
The Social cognitive theory of hypnosis is a form of role playing where people who are hypnotized
aren t in a different state of consciousness, but are simply acting the way others expect them to in that
situation (Sarbin Coe, 1972). The Dissociation theory of hypnosis is a dissociation of consciousness
where the mind is split in two parts (1991; Hilgard Hilgard, 1994). One part of the mind is conscious
and the other part of the mind is the hidden observer . ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Killer Angels Book Review
June 21, 2012 The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara: The Random House Publishing Group, New
York, 1974.
The Killer Angels is a stunning recollection of the telltale battle of the Civil War: the Battle of
Gettysburg. Set from June 29 to July 3, 1863 and told from the vantage points of several soldiers and
commanding officers from both sides, including Lee, Longstreet, and Chamberlain, Michael Shaara
effectively paints a picture of the war that divided America, from the tactical planning to the emotional
hardships The book opened with a sodden Confederate spy as he blazed through the Union lines in the
dead of night on June 29, 1863 toward the headquarters of Confederate general Robert E. Lee with ...

During one such moment, Chamberlain is reminded of a Shakespearean speech: What a piece of work
man is...in action how like an angel! (page 126). Upon hearing this, Chamberlain s father commented,
Well, boy, if he s an angel, he s sure a murderin angel. (page 126). From this interaction, Chamberlain
came up with Man: the Killer Angels , a thought he often revisited over the course of the Battle of
Gettysburg, and from which the book acquires its title. Chamberlain acted with the intention of getting
something positive out of the war. He never treated the Confederates as though they were less than
him: Chamberlain put out a hand. Sir he said. The Alabama man nodded slightly. His voice was so low
Chamberlain could hardly hear it. Do you have some water? Certainly. Chamberlain offered his own
canteen. (page 243). It is even known that he had his troops salute the surrendering South at
Appomattox. Overall, I found Michael Shaara s The Killer Angels an interesting book; it shed a new
and different light on the Battle of Gettysburg by showing it from multiple points of view. I believe
that Shaara was successful in writing in the diction of his chosen narrators; he used slang and dropped
g s for the Confederate soldiers and used proper grammar and British terminology for the Englishman,
Freemantle. I was also impressed by his knowledge of military terms and the effectiveness of which
he used them. The terms were used enough that

Harley Davidson And The Motorcycle Industry
History:
Foundation:
It all started in Milwaukee, Winsconsin in 1903 when William Harley, Walter and Arthur Davidson
created their first Harley Davidson in their family building. Harley Davidson and the motorcycle
industry wasn t a big company until after the Second World War. Many people rode motorcycles
during the war, with Harley Davidson themselves becoming the major supplier not only for the U.S.
military but other allied forces as well during this time. Many veterans chose to purchase motorcycles
upon returning home, as they enjoyed riding during the war and wanted to continue riding in their
civilian life. This generation quickly became the main target audience for many of Harley Davidson s
marketing efforts and main target for buyers as by 1956, Indian Motorcycles declared bankruptcy and
stopped producing motorcycles altogether, leaving only Harley as a major producer and seller of
motorcycles.
Harley Davidson Today and the challenges:
The motorcycle industry offers products which can be viewed as luxuries or wants as opposed to
necessities. Harley Davidson owns Buell motorcycle and Harley Davidson financial services. Harley
Davidson now holds 55 percent of the entire U.S. motorcycle market, and an even higher share in the
U.S. heavy motorcycle market. This is the result of increasing investment in R D. Harley Davidson
now has over 6,000 employees. Harley Davidson has benefited from a segment of the U.S. market

Fgc Or Female Genital Cutting Summary
This week s encounter with FGC or Female Genital Cutting disturbed me and my eyes were opened to
some of the harsh realities in the world. Everyone in the class was either assigned to be pro FGC or
against. Based on which side of the argument you were assigned, each side read an article defending
that side, and everyone watched the same documentary on a journey of a young woman in Africa
leading up to her coming of age ceremony involving genital cutting. Throughout the video, you can
tell that FGC is a common and important practice in West African Societies. A teenager named Mary
was preparing for the coming of age ceremony, and the nervousness was noticeable. Someone who
actually does the cutting was interviewed, and she discussed her livelihood and how there is a certain
technique to the practice. Finally the time come for Mary to become a woman and the cutting came
and went. The ceremony was at the very least hard to watch. The pain was clear in the aftermath, but
the celebration continued and Mary seemed fine at the end. Also, a woman named Alice ... Show more

Analysis Of Thomas Middleton s The Crucible
Analytical Research Paper
Thomas Middleton s, Women Beware Women and Arthur Miller s The Crucible, are both set in the
1600s a time when women did not have any rights. Although both stories are completely different
from each other, they share a common trait of bold, powerful women. In The Crucible, Abigail s
jealousy and desire to have revenge on Elizabeth Proctor has her manipulate everyone in the town of
Salem causing hysteria. Livia, the widow in Women Beware Women strategically manipulates every
person to turn their backs on each other which creates a tragedy. Abigail and Livia are the villains in
their community but how they acquire their power is very different. While Abigail s power comes
from her intense desire for revenge on a specific person and then spreads throughout the community,
Livia s motivation for power originates from her own boredom and desire for control on a large scale.
Both of these characters are nothing short of cynical. They are motivated by self interest and cannot be
trusted. Livia, is the sister to Hippolito and Fabritio and the aunt to Isabella. She is a wealthy woman
on her own but her life went down hill after losing two husbands. There is no question that she is the
essence of evil in Women Beware Women because she wants other people to be miserable as she once
was. In The Psychological Drama of Women Beware Women written by Charles A. Hallett, he says,
Cynicism is, in a sense, a mechanism developed by the unimaginative designed

Young Goodman Brown Allegory Analysis
An allegory is a type of literature that contains a hidden meaning or message about its characters or
setting. In Nathaniel Hawthorne s Young Goodman Brown, allegory is abundantly utilized throughout
the story in the form of characters such as Goodman Brown, representing the universal man of Salem;
Faith, his wife, also representing his religious faith; and Goody Cloyse as a high ranking religious
figure that is secretly hiding an ominous side. Through the allegory, Hawthorne expresses the idea that
the loss of purity and innocence is inevitable.
Young Goodman Brown was cleverly given his name by Hawthorne to refer to the everyday Christian
man living in Salem during the Colonial time period. The first name Goodman literally describes a
good man of Christian faith while Brown represents a common American last name, hence creating a
universal character. Allegory is woven throughout the story, including when Goodman Brown finds
his beloved wife, Faith, practicing rituals with a cult that he encounters in the forest. When Goodman
Brown initially believes he hears Faith s voice in the forest, he investigates only to find her pink hair
ribbons hanging from a branch. At this, Goodman Brown cries, My Faith is gone... There is no good
on earth; and sin is but a name. Come, devil; for to thee is this world given (Hawthorne 1038). In this
cry for help, Goodman Brown expresses both the loss of allegiance to his wife and the loss of his
religious faith in God and the Christian

The discovery of Kusado Sengen in 1928, a long forgotten medieval Japanese town that once used to

Smith argues that the gendered domestic spaces, both the idealistic and realistic, of sixteenth century
Verona shows the influence of women on the Renaissance material culture. Smith chose to focus on
Verona and the sixteenth century because although they were behind in their palace building Verona
has more documents pertaining to movable wealth. Women in this time were becoming wealthier
because of large dowries and increasingly being named in wills of family members, contributing to the

Meaning Of Geography Vs Geography
History rhymes, but geography endures. was once stated by Andrew C. Katen. History, in fact, does
not repeat itself. However, it does seem to have recurring events. With geography, on the other hand,
the learning possibilities are endless. As people continually change, it causes the environment around
us to change, which makes geography an ongoing happening. For example, the population is always
increasing and decreasing because of the number of births and deaths. So therefore, more and more
space is being taken up to provide living space for the large amount of humans on Earth. Geography
deals with not only maps, compasses, and landforms, but with people of different cultures and how
they interact with the space around them. Many geographers feel that geography is how people adapt
their environment to fit their culture (and vice versa), while other geographers feel as though
geography is about how different factors make the earth diverse and how things are laid out based on
the diversity of the earth. According to some geographers, the definition of geography is how people
adapt, or change, their environment to fit their culture. In document one, it states, ...Geography
emphasizes people, their ways of life, their divisions, and their endeavors to solve their problems and
to adapt the regional environmental conditions to their ways and means... This basically is saying that
people change the environment around them so that it is able to go together with their goals,

Gospels Essay
The new testament contains four (4) accounts of the story of Jesus life, death and resurrection as
presented by Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, The 3 accounts are similar, while Johns bible presents Jesus
in a unique way. These differences exist because Matthew and Luke got their information from Mark
and John got his information from another source, maybe John did not have access to the other
gospels or he chose not to use them. No one really knows the source of John s gospel and we don t
know for sure who wrote the gospels. Scholars refer to the authors as Matthew, Mark, Luke amp;
John, this may not even be their real names. The Gospel were not first hand accounts except for Mark.
John did not seem to have known the existence of the other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Statement was translated to mean that when Christians were forced with the question of whether
gentiles Christians should still practice the special Jewish food (kosher) laws or could Gentiles eat
what they wished (non kosher) and this would not make them unclean and unacceptable as members
of the early Christian community.
This means that during the second stage many of Jesus sayings were not simply treated as things to be
memorized. They were to be used as living words that would eventually guide Christian communities
in all new situations. Third Stage: The oral traditions about Jesus were written down. If Marks gospel
was already being used, why would Matthew and Luke want to write their respective Gospels as well?
Each of the Gospels were written for a special group of Christians and for a specific purpose. In
Matthew s gospel we often find the phrase quot; All its took place to fulfill through the prophet... quot;,
introducing a quotation from the Old Testament. This suggests that Matthew is speaking to people
who consider the Old testament to be very important and who are wondering how Jesus fits into
history of the Jewish people. This problems means that Matthew s community was largely Jewish
Christian and needed to be reassured that being a Christian did not separate then from the Jewish
heritage.
In Marks Gospel it does not contain many Old Testament quotations. Mark was not

Business At The Northeast Connecticut Chamber Of Commerce
Imagine this, you re a business just starting out. You have a solid product that s evolved over time to
which you have developed a key niche in the market. You spent countless hours working on your
storefront and developing a professional environment. Your product line is ready for sale and you told
all your friends and family about your new store. You open up the door and by the end of the day...
you had five people come in. Reason being is that as a small business owner you forgot one of your
biggest tools, marketing. I have an internship currently at the Northeast Connecticut Chamber of
Commerce which is headed by Betti Kuszaj the executive director. The purpose in the chamber of
commerce is a local association to promote and protect the interests of the business community in a
particular place (investopedia.com) but the way I think of it is it s a club to promote the growth of its
members (small businesses). The chambers ultimate goal besides promoting the growth of small
businesses is that it wants to get more members. Reason being is that to be a member it cost a yearly
fee which depends on how much workers you have per business. The low end of the membership is
the baseline price of 200 dollars for businesses with less than 5 employees while the higher end is up
to 1,000 dollars or more with employees being 200+. Therefore it is important to get these new
memberships because even though it is a non profit organization the chamber still has to raise revenue

Delian League Research Paper
The Delian League is a modern term for the group of Greek cities that formed an organisation which
was referred to in the fifth century BC as The Athenians and their Allies . The aim of the Delian
League was originally to form an alliance for an offensive war against Persia and to liberate the
Greeks in Asia Minor from Persian control. Thucydides wrote in The Peloponnesian War, the aim of
the League was to compensate themselves for their losses by ravaging the territory of the King of
Persia. While many factors contributed to the slow transformation of the Delian League into the
Athenian Empire, a large part of the change derives from Athens leadership of the League and their
eventual use of the other states for private matters. The fulfillment of the aim of the Delian League
demonstrates the turning point from the League to the empire.
The name alone is an indication of Athens power within the League, and originally Athens was chosen
for leadership by the other states in the League and accepted as a leader by outsiders, including Sparta.
It was natural that leadership should fall to Athens at the formation of the League for many reasons,
mostly because Sparta was deemed unfit to lead by the other states. The rigid Spartan way of life was
useful in battle but proved to be ineffective to direct the freer states. The Spartan regent of ... Show

The allies could choose to pay money instead of sending warriors or providing ships for military
service. Many states picked to do this and as a result the Athenian navy grew in power and strength,
and the other states were left unprepared and useless in any war, especially to fight Athens. In the The
History of the Peloponnesian War he wrote, for this position the allies themselves were to blame... The
result was that the Athenian navy grew at their expense, and when they revolted they also always

Nazi Art
Art is a subjective medium of expression. Based on each person s experiences, beliefs, and feelings
they will create and also interpret art in different ways. Usually this will lead to a healthy discussion
on the differences of the interpretation of each individual. This was not the case when the Nazi s had
power in Germany and they used their power to shape art in their country to what they deemed to be
acceptable and exiled art they deemed unacceptable or not fitting their belief system. This would
change the art direction of Germany from a more expressive style to a more conservative style that fit
the Nazi party s beliefs and how they wish to run the country.

Arnason and Mansfield (2012) explore another German expressionist movement known as Der Blaue
Reiter or The Blue Rider. While The Bridge were the first manifestation of expressionism in Germany
they were not the most significant. This belonged to Der Blaue Reiter. Led by one of the great
personalities of moden art, Vasily Kandinsky. (p.l.) Vasily Kandinsky was another artist eventually got
seized by the Nazi s in the seizing party of 16,000 pieces of art. Arnason and Mansfield (2012) explain
more about Kandinsky. One of the signature things that Kandinsky did was explore a revolutionary
idea about non objective or abstract painting. That means painting without literal subject matter. A
painting that does not take its form from the observed world. In 1914 World War I forced Kandinsky
to return to Russia, and shortly afterwards a new phase of his career began. This was not unusual for
art in the time period of World War I. Looking at the art style of Der Blaue Reiter up to the year 1914,
We can see that the individuals involved were not held together by common stylistic principles but
rather constituted a loose association of young artist who were enthusiastic about new experiments an
united in their oppositions. Besides the personal friendships, Kandinsky was the one who gave the
group cohesion and

Interim Report for Engineering Ethics and Emerging Technologies
From the beginning of human civilization till present date, new innovations and technologies are
introduced into the society to improve existing lifestyle or operation methods. However, as we
approach the pinnacle of what current technologies allows us to research on, the rate at which new
technologies are surfacing is gradually decreasing. Therefore, researchers and engineers began
working on existing technologies for further improvement. One branch of emerging technology will
be convergence. Convergence technologies are the combination of technologies from absolutely
different systems, which ultimately work towards a common goal. One example would be the

Since many small scale farmers belong to low income group, this in turn represents a widening
income gap along with social repercussions. Hence more attention should be paid to improving
livestock conditions rather than developing in vitro meat. The government should be making it easier
and more affordable to raise livestock. Possible solutions include setting up of government agencies to
do research and development on rearing livestock. Agencies can share findings with the farmers and
educate them on better methods to rear their livestock. Small scale farmers can then price their goods
competitively and not be pushed out of the market by big players. Other solutions include requesting
the supermarkets to support the local farmers by selling their goods. Singapore s Fairprice
supermarket has been selling local poultry and eggs in support of the local industry. With such
measures in place, we can ensure that traditional farms can keep pace with technology and not be
phased out.
Nanotechnology
Nanotechnology can be broadly categorized under Molecular manufacturing (MM), which will be a
significant breakthrough, comparable perhaps to the Industrial Revolution but compressed into a few
years. This technology exists in nearly every conceivable application at the tiniest levels. Everything

Mallard s Demise
Louise Mallard s Demise in The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin Kate Chopin s short story, The
Story of an Hour , is about a woman, named Louise Mallard, in the late 1800s who is told that her
husband, Brently, has died in a railroad accident. Initially, Louise is surprised, distressed, and drowned
in sorrow. After mourning the loss, the woman realizes that she is finally free and independent, and
that the only person she has to live for is herself. She becomes overwhelmed with joy about her new
discovery of freedom, and dreams of all of the wonderful events in life that lie ahead of her. Louise s
sister finally convinces her to leave her room and come back into reality. While Louise is walking
down her steps, her husband surprisingly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Either way, it can be interpreted that the couple never saw each other before Louise died. Therefore,
Louise Mallard may have simply passed away from a heart that was exhausted from her strong initial
grief of losing her husband and her new adventurous excitement from gaining freedom (Cunningham
3). The unique ending of The Story of an Hour also contains some irony. During the 1800s, which is
the time period that Chopin wrote this short story, men held more respect than women in society, and
women were expected to be dependent upon a husband. A critic, Emily Toth, states that Chopin may
have included Louise s death at the end of the story to please authors and editors because presenting
that a woman may be able to happily live without a husband in the 1890s would be a fanatic idea
(Cunningham 4). The multitude of conservative readers in the 1890s could interpret that Louise passed
away because she was too independent, but the actual meaning of the death may have very well been
because of Louise s joy from finally being dismissed from her husband s control. By using irony,
Chopin was able to both please the critics of her time period, and prove a hidden point that women can
find joy without a man. Over all, in The Story of an Hour , Kate Chopin leaves the meaning

Analysis Of John T. Scopes Monkey Trial
Religion and science both face off in ¨The Scopes Monkey Trial, the case that America went bananas
over. Two men duel to prove their points about evolution and whether it defies state laws or not. The
conflict of John T. Scopes defying the Butler Act, an act prohibiting public school teachers from
denying Biblical accounts of man s origin, was temporarily resolved with Scopes being fined, but this
compromise was not entirely settled until the Butler Act was repealed years later. Biblical theology
was a very strong belief among many, even when scientists proved them wrong with evidence.
According to The Scopes Monkey Trial, Charles Darwin first caused scandal to the U.S. when he
published his book, On the Origin of Species By Means

The Iranian Revolution Essay
The emergence of the Islamic Republic in late 1970 s Iran demonstrates how middle class Iranian
people purged themselves of the Pahlavi Dynasty in an effort to continue down a more righteous and
egalitarian path. As a result, the country underwent a complete social upheaval and in its place grew
an overtly oppressive regime based in theoretical omnipotence. In response to this regime, the very
structure of political and social life was shaken and fundamentally transformed as religion and politics
became inexorable. As a result, gender roles and the battle between public and private life were
redrawn. Using various primary and secondary sources I will show how the Revolution shaped secular
middle class Iranians. Further, I will show how the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition, the author recalls the Iranian government closing down all bilingual schools or any other
symbols of capitalism and decadence . These became symbols of regression in the eyes of the
Ayatollah and everyone must conform. The author struggles with the very idea of politics and religion
during this period as laws of forced veiling and oppression came into conflict with her preconceptions
of religion. The author cites an instances where the police locked the outside doors of an Iranian
cinema, set it on fire, and prohibited people from rescuing those inside. According to the text, The
BBC said there were 400 victims. The shah said that a group of religious fanatics perpetrated the
massacre. But the people knew that it was the Shah s fault. The secular Iranian perspective of the
injustices being committed by the newly formed Islamic Republic was troubling. A release was sought
by this group of people, the only problem was enjoying life and not getting caught. Enjoying life
during the Islamic Republic included nothing inferred by the word enjoy . Anything that was enjoyed
such as drinking alcohol, dancing at concerts, or commiserating in a party setting was forbidden and
punishable by law. As a result, Iranians ran the risk of getting caught and did these things
conspicuously. In Persepolis, the author describes an instance where she and her family are stopped on
their way home by a street gang enforcing the

Analysis Of Frankenstein s Monster, And Fredrick Douglass
Knowledge can be the key to freedom or to one s demise, depending on how one choses to act, but no
matter what, gaining knowledge is rarely an easy task. Even for students who have information readily
available to them, like Victor Frankenstein at the University of Ingolstadt, are constantly under the
arduous task of learning. When learning has to be done by any means necessary or in secret, like
Frankenstein s monster or Fredrick Douglass, the acquisition of knowledge becomes even more
daunting and makes the learner even more ardent in their pursuit. Once a person obtains knowledge,
they see their surroundings for what they are and become discontent; they realize their potential and
take action to change their life, which can be seen through the eyes of Victor Frankenstein, his
monster, and Fredrick Douglass.
Victor Frankenstein was obsessed with knowledge, and thought knowledge was the key to unlocking
nature and become a pioneer in science and challenging God. I have described myself as always
having been imbued with a fervent longing to penetrate the secrets of nature (Shelley, Frankenstein,
21). Victor always had to push boundaries, and his passion drove him closer to science and immorality
and farther from his family and friends. Once Victor sees his abomination animated, his potential
come alive, he wishes for nothing more than if it had never happened. He moves on to a new
obsession fleeing his past. It consumes him and his health.
As Victor learns more, he

  • 2. Strategic And Financial Objectives Of Sainsbury Investment Ratios: Sainsbury s 2013 report states that maintaining a strong / efficient capital base will be key to fulfilling their strategic and financial objectives. This is basically the shareholder s initial equity / monies used to buy shares in the business plus any retained earnings. The capital base is a useful a benchmark for measuring returns relative to initial outlay investment (Investopedia, 2014). Sainsbury s manages its capital structure by buying/selling capital, issuing additional shares or buying back shares, varying its debt portfolio, adapting dividend payment schedules and leasing capital (land/property). Earning targets involve covering the underlying earnings for the ordinary dividend at a minimum of 1.5 times and increasing cover in the medium term to 2 times. The Dividend Payout Ratio shows Sainsbury s holding quite a consistent return for shareholders. Indeed citing a 5.27% increase on 2012/2013 to 50.16 (2013). These were reduced by 10.91% by the 2013/2014 trading period, closing at 44.69. Similarly Tesco Dividend Payout Ratio figures suggest a level period from 2009 2012 at 41.93. The ratio figure rose exponentially, by 2253.11% to 986.66 by 2013, due largely to the huge 95.74% reduction in profit for the year of just £120M. Evidence that the situation is recovering somewhat is the published increase in profit of 708.33% to close at £970M in 2013. Further subsequent reductions in the 2013/2014 period of 87.58% closes with the ratio specified ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Homelessness And The Homeless Youth Homelessness is a major problem in the United States. An incredibly vulnerable group is the homeless youth due to their young age and lack of education. According to Edidin, Ganim, Hunter, Karnik (2012) on any particular night in the United States there are ~2 million homeless youth living on the streets, in shelters, or in other temporary accommodation. Youth become homeless for multiple reasons whether it be because they have aged out of foster care, ran from home, were kicked out of their home, or because they have become homeless along with their family members. Within the umbrella categorization of homeless youth there are high at risk subgroups, common misconceptions, and a serious concern of lack of support and medical services. Homeless youth face an abundance of challenges, especially if they are on their own, such as finding food, shelter, income, and potential medical expenses. Some youth experience additional hardship by facing the effects of abuse they endured at their previous place of residence. According to the National Conference of State Legislators (2013) 46 percent of runaway and homeless youth reported physical abuse, 38 percent reported emotional abuse, and 17 percent reported being forced into unwanted sexual activity by a family or household member. Therefore, the chances of emotional vulnerability are high. A common misconception of homeless youth is that even if they do become homeless they are not homeless for long. • 4. Andrew Carnegie s Impact On Society Between 1865 and 1901, Andrew Carnegie played a great role in innovation and made America the most major industrial nation in the world (www.socyberty.com). Living a destitute early life, Carnegie went to night school and educated himself as much as he could as a child (www.britannica.com). Because he could read and write, Carnegie, the only son of a weaver, became one of the richest men in America (www.myinterestingfacts.com). Carnegie warms hearts of society with one of his most compelling quotes which states I began to learn what poverty meant. He would later write, It was burnt into my heart when that my father had to beg for work. Then and there came the resolve that I would cure that when I got to become a man (www.pbs.org). The ... The rest of the money that you own should be utilized to increase the value of society (myinterestingdfacts.com). Carnegie so firmly believed that everyone should not hoard all of their wealth; he thought that everyone should donate. He believed that everyone should give their money to make the world around them a better place for everyone, including them. This quote explains why he granted over ninety percent of all of his wealth by the time he died. Hebrews 13:16 Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God (openbible.info). • 5. Essay On Irish Immigration To America The mid late 1800 s, immigration is rampant within the United States, approximately 12,000,000 foreigners are attempting to enter the country, searching for a second chance or a fresh start ( Rise of Industrial America, 1876 1900 ). Among the many nationalities immigrating were the Irish, coming to the Land of The Free in an attempt to escape the famine, disease, and poverty that lingered from the Great Potato Famine. The potential for a clean slate was so tempting that between 1820 and 1930, as many as 4.5 million Irish came to America ( Irish Catholic Immigration to America ). However, despite the promise of opportunity, the Irish was not welcomed, nor were they particularly wanted. The Irish faced considerable obstacles when they first arrived in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The answer can be simplified down to racism. Racism is a problem, it has always been a problem, it will most likely always be a problem. The Irish dealt with extreme prejudice and hatred when the arrived here, today the target of abuse are the Mexicans and Muslims. Two peoples that merely did as everyone else did, they came to America looking for a second chance. While yes, there is validity to the notion that terrorist attacks in the country have been caused by Muslims, and that there are multitudes of illegal Mexican immigrants, that does not sanction being able to discriminate against an entire population for the acts of some. To truly learn from the heinous ways of one s predecessors, one must must go back and see what was wrong and really make an effort to prevent it from happening again. We must go back and view the sins of those who came before us and take heed of the lessons to learn, and be more tolerant and kind to those around us, not judging based on race, culture, or ethnicity. We must learn to accept ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Media Influence on Eating Disorders Essay With eating disorders on the rise today, the media plays an important role in affecting self esteem, leading a large amount of young adults to develop eating disorders. Many adolescents see the overbearing thin celebrities and try to reach media s level of thinness and ideal body weight. Sixty nine of the girls reported that magazine pictures influenced their idea of the perfect body shape (Field). Not only is being thin associated with other positive characteristics such as, lovable, popular, beautiful, and sexy, but being overweight is connected with negative characteristics like fat, ugly, unpopular, and lazy. Therefore media is the distinct social pressure of operating to influence people to be thin and causing eating disorders. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Scientist have also found a new link that connects eating disorders to sever physiological problems. People with anorexia or bulimia appear to have deficient amounts of serotonin, a brain chemical associated with moods and emotions, circulating in their brains. The lack of serotonin is also linked to people with depression (Chang). It is safe to state that another cause of eating disorders is depression. The causes of depression are perhaps when people see the beautiful models, they depressed because they don t look like them, so they long to look like them, and develop unhealthy eating habits. When people look at the advertisements, movies, shows, and commercials and compare themselves to the models, they look fat. They look and feel a lot larger because the models and examples they are comparing themselves to are so unhealthy and skinny. Model Kate Moss is dangerously underweight weighing ninety five pounds and standing five feet seven, this is thirty percent below the ideal body weight (Field). In reality it is the reader who is more than likely to already have a healthy weight. The models that everyone worships and compares themselves to, are unhealthy, underweight, and some have fully developed eating disorders. • 7. The Importance Of No Motion In Baseball Baseball is a sport that has been around since the 18th century. Baseball is referred to as America s pastime because of all the history and tradition behind the game. Alexander Cartwright developed the basic rules of the game as we now know it today. On September 23, 1845, he organized the Knickerbocker Baseball Club of New York. The first game was played in Hoboken, New Jersey. Baseball is a great sport to watch and play however many athletes who play this game become very injury prone. No motion in baseball is very natural. The baseball throwing motion, where players bring your arm all the way behind your body and whip it forward, can put a lot of strain on a player s arm and elbow. A pitcher in particular is someone who throws a ball sometimes more than a hundred times a game. Although many strength and conditioning programs have been developed to help player strength their arms to reduce the risk of injury many players still get hurt. These strength and ... But it s not going to improve their level of performance,There s been a perception that the surgery will make you better. Our findings debunk that perception. • 8. The Goal of Education is the Student Discovering the Power... I know of no more important goal in education than that the child shall discover the power of his or her own mind. And I know of no more important source of that discovery for every child, than the inquiry that lives in continuing exploratory in the classroom. (Lindfors, 1999, p.247) Kindergarten is the place where children explore real experiences and know how world works. They start gradually to construct knowledge and transform their curiosities into thoughts and questions. By wondering to find answers, children find themselves engaged in scientific thinking aimed to solve everyday problems. This approach needs to be encouraged and developed in an educational setting where teachers play major role in changing curriculum and organizing instructions to meet children needs (Poon, Tan Tan, 2009). Our children, in kindergarten, are exposed to direct instruction method. The problem is that teachers are not aware that using this method will not lead children to learn science. This method is no longer appropriate. World has changed, education has changed and young children should master new skills in thinking. They must develop new understanding of modern life and be able to master new practical issues .Using the direct method restrain kids from exploring world of science. We must give children chances to develop new skills and become life long learners. Teachers, who are resisting the change, are ignorant of the fact that what they are doing in ... • 9. The Complex And Interesting Optical Properties Essay The complex and interesting optical properties can be shown clearly on Nanostructured metals the collective oscillations of the conduction electrons termed plasmons lead to most striking phenomenon encountered in these structures are resonances . Plasmon modes exist in a number of geometries and in various metals most importantly in noble metals such as gold, copper and silver. Under certain circumstances plasmons are excited by light, which leads to strong light scattering and absorption and an enhancement of the local electromagnetic field. In 1989, based upon calculations, Neeves and Birnboim proposed that a composite spherical particle with a dielectric core and a metallic shell could produce SPR modes with a much larger range of wavelengths. The first nanoshells were made by Zhou et al. In the 1990 s. They used a Au2S core surrounded by a gold shell. Variations of these shells made it possible to shift the standard gold colloid plasmon resonance peak from ~520 nm up to ~900 nm. There was a limit however, of less than 40 nm on the size of nanoshell that they could achieve due to the chemistry of their synthesis reactions. The process also produced large amounts of gold colloid as a secondary product which gave an additional absorption peak at ~520 nm. Halas and coworkers synthesized a new type of gold nanoshell that overcame many of the limitations of the Au2S core type nanoshell. The new method replaced the Au2S core with a silica core and made it possible to exert ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Comparing Hinduism Christianity And Islam LaShawn Lock 28 October 2014 HIS 101 Professor Andrew Wiest Looking at Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam on a Boarder Scale Christianity, Islam, and Hinduism all share similarities, but they also share differences as well. Christianity and Islam are Abrahamic religions. Hinduism on the other hand originated from the eastern part of the world. Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam are all religions who have guidelines on what they consider their right way of living in order to achieve an afterlife. While reading these four assigned readings, there were more similarities between Islam and Christianity. Hinduism is more along with itself because it is almost the complete opposite. Each of these religions believe in good and evil, and they also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Just like the Hindus, the Christians and the Muslims believed that if you do good that good things will happen to you. All three beliefs give their followers guidelines on how to live right so good things can happen to them. In Christianity, the good people can go to heaven. In Matthew 7:21, Jesus says in his sermon, Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. You have to do the will of God in order to get to heaven. In the law of Karma, the Hindu faith believes when you do well on earth that you can be reincarnated into something better than when you were here on earth. Of course since good things happen to those who do good, bad things happen to those who don t do as well. • 11. Dissociation Theory Of Hypnosis What is hypnosis? Hypnosis is when a person is in a highly susceptible state of consciousness where they are open to suggestion. Typically, it is used to help relax/calm a person, control/alleviate pain, and recover from whatever they re experiencing. Being susceptible to suggestion makes it easy to be affected mentally and physically. The hypnotist uses this to guide you or influence you into a certain situation. When being hypnotized, the subject is in charge and can t be forced against their will. Which means people can only be hypnotized if they re willing to be. The Social cognitive theory of hypnosis is a form of role playing where people who are hypnotized aren t in a different state of consciousness, but are simply acting the way others expect them to in that situation (Sarbin Coe, 1972). The Dissociation theory of hypnosis is a dissociation of consciousness where the mind is split in two parts (1991; Hilgard Hilgard, 1994). One part of the mind is conscious and the other part of the mind is the hidden observer . ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 12. The Killer Angels Book Review Katie Cline The Killer Angels Book Review June 21, 2012 The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara: The Random House Publishing Group, New York, 1974. The Killer Angels is a stunning recollection of the telltale battle of the Civil War: the Battle of Gettysburg. Set from June 29 to July 3, 1863 and told from the vantage points of several soldiers and commanding officers from both sides, including Lee, Longstreet, and Chamberlain, Michael Shaara effectively paints a picture of the war that divided America, from the tactical planning to the emotional hardships The book opened with a sodden Confederate spy as he blazed through the Union lines in the dead of night on June 29, 1863 toward the headquarters of Confederate general Robert E. Lee with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During one such moment, Chamberlain is reminded of a Shakespearean speech: What a piece of work man is...in action how like an angel! (page 126). Upon hearing this, Chamberlain s father commented, Well, boy, if he s an angel, he s sure a murderin angel. (page 126). From this interaction, Chamberlain came up with Man: the Killer Angels , a thought he often revisited over the course of the Battle of Gettysburg, and from which the book acquires its title. Chamberlain acted with the intention of getting something positive out of the war. He never treated the Confederates as though they were less than him: Chamberlain put out a hand. Sir he said. The Alabama man nodded slightly. His voice was so low Chamberlain could hardly hear it. Do you have some water? Certainly. Chamberlain offered his own canteen. (page 243). It is even known that he had his troops salute the surrendering South at Appomattox. Overall, I found Michael Shaara s The Killer Angels an interesting book; it shed a new and different light on the Battle of Gettysburg by showing it from multiple points of view. I believe that Shaara was successful in writing in the diction of his chosen narrators; he used slang and dropped g s for the Confederate soldiers and used proper grammar and British terminology for the Englishman, Freemantle. I was also impressed by his knowledge of military terms and the effectiveness of which he used them. The terms were used enough that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. Harley Davidson And The Motorcycle Industry History: Foundation: It all started in Milwaukee, Winsconsin in 1903 when William Harley, Walter and Arthur Davidson created their first Harley Davidson in their family building. Harley Davidson and the motorcycle industry wasn t a big company until after the Second World War. Many people rode motorcycles during the war, with Harley Davidson themselves becoming the major supplier not only for the U.S. military but other allied forces as well during this time. Many veterans chose to purchase motorcycles upon returning home, as they enjoyed riding during the war and wanted to continue riding in their civilian life. This generation quickly became the main target audience for many of Harley Davidson s marketing efforts and main target for buyers as by 1956, Indian Motorcycles declared bankruptcy and stopped producing motorcycles altogether, leaving only Harley as a major producer and seller of motorcycles. Harley Davidson Today and the challenges: The motorcycle industry offers products which can be viewed as luxuries or wants as opposed to necessities. • 14. Fgc Or Female Genital Cutting Summary This week s encounter with FGC or Female Genital Cutting disturbed me and my eyes were opened to some of the harsh realities in the world. Everyone in the class was either assigned to be pro FGC or against. Based on which side of the argument you were assigned, each side read an article defending that side, and everyone watched the same documentary on a journey of a young woman in Africa leading up to her coming of age ceremony involving genital cutting. Throughout the video, you can tell that FGC is a common and important practice in West African Societies. A teenager named Mary was preparing for the coming of age ceremony, and the nervousness was noticeable. Someone who actually does the cutting was interviewed, and she discussed her livelihood and how there is a certain technique to the practice. Finally the time come for Mary to become a woman and the cutting came and went. The ceremony was at the very least hard to watch. The pain was clear in the aftermath, but the celebration continued and Mary seemed fine at the end. Also, a woman named Alice ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Analysis Of Thomas Middleton s The Crucible Analytical Research Paper Thomas Middleton s, Women Beware Women and Arthur Miller s The Crucible, are both set in the 1600s a time when women did not have any rights. Although both stories are completely different from each other, they share a common trait of bold, powerful women. In The Crucible, Abigail s jealousy and desire to have revenge on Elizabeth Proctor has her manipulate everyone in the town of Salem causing hysteria. Livia, the widow in Women Beware Women strategically manipulates every person to turn their backs on each other which creates a tragedy. Abigail and Livia are the villains in their community but how they acquire their power is very different. While Abigail s power comes from her intense desire for revenge on a specific person and then spreads throughout the community, Livia s motivation for power originates from her own boredom and desire for control on a large scale. Both of these characters are nothing short of cynical. They are motivated by self interest and cannot be trusted. Livia, is the sister to Hippolito and Fabritio and the aunt to Isabella. She is a wealthy woman on her own but her life went down hill after losing two husbands. There is no question that she is the essence of evil in Women Beware Women because she wants other people to be miserable as she once was. • 16. Young Goodman Brown Allegory Analysis An allegory is a type of literature that contains a hidden meaning or message about its characters or setting. In Nathaniel Hawthorne s Young Goodman Brown, allegory is abundantly utilized throughout the story in the form of characters such as Goodman Brown, representing the universal man of Salem; Faith, his wife, also representing his religious faith; and Goody Cloyse as a high ranking religious figure that is secretly hiding an ominous side. Through the allegory, Hawthorne expresses the idea that the loss of purity and innocence is inevitable. Young Goodman Brown was cleverly given his name by Hawthorne to refer to the everyday Christian man living in Salem during the Colonial time period. The first name Goodman literally describes a good man of Christian faith while Brown represents a common American last name, hence creating a universal character. Allegory is woven throughout the story, including when Goodman Brown finds his beloved wife, Faith, practicing rituals with a cult that he encounters in the forest. When Goodman Brown initially believes he hears Faith s voice in the forest, he investigates only to find her pink hair ribbons hanging from a branch. At this, Goodman Brown cries, My Faith is gone... There is no good on earth; and sin is but a name. Come, devil; for to thee is this world given (Hawthorne 1038). In this cry for help, Goodman Brown expresses both the loss of allegiance to his wife and the loss of his religious faith in God and the Christian ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Meaning Of Geography Vs Geography History rhymes, but geography endures. was once stated by Andrew C. Katen. History, in fact, does not repeat itself. However, it does seem to have recurring events. With geography, on the other hand, the learning possibilities are endless. As people continually change, it causes the environment around us to change, which makes geography an ongoing happening. For example, the population is always increasing and decreasing because of the number of births and deaths. So therefore, more and more space is being taken up to provide living space for the large amount of humans on Earth. Geography deals with not only maps, compasses, and landforms, but with people of different cultures and how they interact with the space around them. Many geographers feel that geography is how people adapt their environment to fit their culture (and vice versa), while other geographers feel as though geography is about how different factors make the earth diverse and how things are laid out based on the diversity of the earth. According to some geographers, the definition of geography is how people adapt, or change, their environment to fit their culture. In document one, it states, ...Geography emphasizes people, their ways of life, their divisions, and their endeavors to solve their problems and to adapt the regional environmental conditions to their ways and means... • 24. Delian League Research Paper The Delian League is a modern term for the group of Greek cities that formed an organisation which was referred to in the fifth century BC as The Athenians and their Allies . The aim of the Delian League was originally to form an alliance for an offensive war against Persia and to liberate the Greeks in Asia Minor from Persian control. Thucydides wrote in The Peloponnesian War, the aim of the League was to compensate themselves for their losses by ravaging the territory of the King of Persia. While many factors contributed to the slow transformation of the Delian League into the Athenian Empire, a large part of the change derives from Athens leadership of the League and their eventual use of the other states for private matters. The fulfillment of the aim of the Delian League demonstrates the turning point from the League to the empire. The name alone is an indication of Athens power within the League, and originally Athens was chosen for leadership by the other states in the League and accepted as a leader by outsiders, including Sparta. After mourning the loss, the woman realizes that she is finally free and independent, and that the only person she has to live for is herself. Either way, it can be interpreted that the couple never saw each other before Louise died. Therefore, Louise Mallard may have simply passed away from a heart that was exhausted from her strong initial grief of losing her husband and her new adventurous excitement from gaining freedom (Cunningham 3). The unique ending of The Story of an Hour also contains some irony. During the 1800s, which is the time period that Chopin wrote this short story, men held more respect than women in society, and women were expected to be dependent upon a husband. A critic, Emily Toth, states that Chopin may have included Louise s death at the end of the story to please authors and editors because presenting that a woman may be able to happily live without a husband in the 1890s would be a fanatic idea (Cunningham 4). The multitude of conservative readers in the 1890s could interpret that Louise passed away because she was too independent, but the actual meaning of the death may have very well been because of Louise s joy from finally being dismissed from her husband s control. By using irony, Chopin was able to both please the critics of her time period, and prove a hidden point that women can find joy without a man.
