Advantage And Weaknesses Of Absolute Advantage
1. Absolute advantage is the theory that a nation specializes in something that it is most efficient at
producing. Absolute advantage is based on productivity. Nation that can produce a good and require
the least quantity of input is considered to have an absolute advantage. On the other, comparative
advantage is based on opportunity cost. Even though that nation may not have the absolute advantage,
it still can produce the good if it has the lowest opportunity cost as compared to another nation.
Absolute advantage came before comparative advantage. The comparative advantage theory came as a
response to the weaknesses of absolute advantage theory, one of which was the fact that it does not
give guidance for nations that do not have absolute advantage. Comparative advantage brings in the
idea that nations with no absolute advantage can still specialize if those nations are capable of
producing the product at a lower opportunity cost. For example, Nation 1 has absolute advantage over
both Good 1 and Good 2, but if Nation 2 has a comparative advantage (can produce at lower
opportunity cost) over Good 2 (but not Good 1), then Nation 1 can specialize in Good 1 and Nation 2
can specialize in Good 2.
2. Comparative advantage. If being selfish, perhaps a nation would choose to have absolute advantage.
Seeking absolute advantage is like obtaining a monopoly of a certain industry. Many of us are aware
that governments like the US are continually eliminating monopolies because they are taking over
smaller businesses in the same industry. Absolute advantage is based on the idea of WINNER LOSER.
When a nation tries to have an absolute advantage in something, it means that the other nations lose
the chance in that something. In contrast, comparative advantage is based on a WIN WIN concept.
Any nation can engage in that particular production of goods even if it does not have an absolute
advantage. Comparative is better than absolute advantage in that it encourages more nations to engage
in international trade.
3. National and Individual Benefits of Absolute Advantage:
a. Both nations benefit by using the resources most effectively (resources are not wasted).
b. Both nations only focus on what they have absolute

The Negative Effects Of Indian Residential Schools In Canada
The Canadian government created an Indian Residential school system which demonstrated racial
discrimination and caused many Indigenous families to suffer, in the year of 1883. However, the
concept was not simple, for all the injustice happening in these schools. This highlights the mistakes
made, due to Canada s government policies. Proving that the government is not always righteous
toward various communities. The government s choices caused a cultural genocide which impacts the
new generation in Canada s modern society. These religion driven schools destroyed the Indigenous
society. This is fragment of Canadian history that confounds both ones who were responsible for the
cause and those who did not take action toward the dilemma. However, the event changed Canada as a
whole. Although the catastrophic idea of Indian residential schools, coming to reality caused plenty of
treachery, it helped to advance the perspective of people, to build Canada into the country it is today,
although there is a question that follows the concept even today, will the virtues learn be enough to
repair the damage done? These schools did many wrong things, one of which included performing a
variety of nutritional and medical experiments on the students without them consenting or their
parents/guardians knowing. A great number of the aboriginal students, which were used as subjects
were killed due to the harsh experiments. Later, the statistics shown proved none of those experiments

My Cultural Aspects Of My Culture In Cape Verdean
A culture is a set of characteristics of a particular group of people. It emcopasses language, social
aspect, such as relegion, cuisine, social habits,, music, and arts. I considered my culture to be Cape
Verdean. I was born and raised in Cape Verde until I was fourteen. My country was colonized by the
Portuguese, so there are a lot common culture aspects between Cape Verde and Portugal . One of the
results of colonization was implementation of catholicism as a primary religion in my country. It was
not until recent years that other forms of religious started to emerge in Cape Verde. However, for some
people who strong practice catholicism there is a strong push back against those who aren t from the
same religion. This has raised a lot religion conflict not only with foreign people who come to Cape
verde from different countries in Africa, but it has also originated conflicts amongst Cape Verdeans
who have a different belief.
Into what region or geographical section or world were you born? What messages have you received
about people from this region or geographical area?
Cape Verde is located right in center of the Atlantic Ocean, 500 km off the Western Coast of Africa. In
recent years, more people have started to questioning the location of Cape Verde because unlike other
countries in Africa, Cape Verde is located outside of the African continent. I identify myself to be
African because I see that there is a lot cultural similarities between my country

The Importance Of The Left Brain And Right Brain Theory
n the 1960s while studying patients with brain injuries, Roger Sperry discovered that the brain s right
and the left hemispheres performed certain jobs. While each side is connected by the Corpus Callosum
which sends messages back and forth, each hemisphere functions differently. The left brain versus
right brain theory is based on Sperry s findings. The theory is that people are either left brained or
right brained, meaning that one side of their brain is dominant (Pietrangelo, 2017, para. 7). The left
side of the brain is responsible for language, logical thinking, math, science, writing and controls the
right side of the body. While the right side of the brain is responsible for imagination, creativity, art,
visualizing feelings, body awareness and controls the left side of the body. This theory has led many to
believe that your personality, preferences, and learning styles are connected to the idea that you are
left brained or right brained. There are many quick assessments available today to test your brain s
hemispheric preference. The results of my hemispheric preference assessment revealed that I am
dominantly left brained. I scored 24/36 points for the left hemisphere, 9/36 points for the right
hemisphere and only 2/36 points for using both hemispheres together. Based on these results I am a
right handed, logical thinker, that is good in math and science. This is partly true, while I am right
handed and do perform well in science, I struggle with math. I really

Scepticism In The Handmaids Tale
The Handmaid s Tale is a dystopian novel by Margaret Atwood from 1985, describing the totalitarian
theocratic regime of the Republic of Gilead. It contains many elements associated with dystopian
stories, including misery, oppression and violence, to quite an extreme extent. Because of this, The
Handmaid s Tale has been banned in certain secondary schools in North America and Europe. The
novels stirred up reactions of disgust, anger and horror. However, according to Atwood, none of the
monstrosities in the book are new. I made a rule for myself: I would not include anything that human
beings had not already done in some other place or time, or for which the technology did not already
exist. (...) all had precedents, and many were to be found ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Gileadean leaders demand Handmaid s to be in good condition, in order to give birth to a strong
and healthy next generation. This shows through the limitations and requirements in the Handmaid s
nutrition and the obligatory examinations by doctors. A student nowadays is not familiar with the
close monitoring of offspring portrayed in the book. This reader is used to a society where everybody
is allowed to have children, regardless of their condition and without having to worrying about the
genes they pass on. For this reason, the reader might be shocked by the power exercised by the
Gileadean government in terms of offspring. The Nazi ideology, however, includes the striving for one
strong race, too. In the case of The Handmaid s Tale, the focus on offspring is mostly a result of low
reproduction rates, whereas the Nazi regime based it on its ideas of superiority of the Aryan race over
others. Though the justification differs, the Nazi reader is still probably more accepting and
understanding towards this part of the novel. In short, the Dutch student might consider the monitoring
of good offspring more shocking and inhumane than the Nazi

General Mills And Its Effects On The Environment Essay
1. General Mills launched an initiative in 2013 to train farming families how to cure the vanilla that
they grow, in order to increase their earnings (Global, 41). One way that General Mills might be able
to approve upon this program is by making sure that the families know what is fair market price for
their cured vanilla, so that the families are not taken advantage of when selling cured vanilla to parties
besides General Mills. 2. General Mills is providing farm automation, equipment and training to
increase cocoa yields as well as to improve the education and health in the area. Part of this program
includes providing farmers with pesticides in order to reduce the amount of crops that are lost to waste
(Global, 42). One way that General Mills can improve this initiative is to make sure they are providing
the farmers with organic pesticides, which would reduce the impact of the pesticides on the
environment. 3. General Mills is currently moving their supplier base towards a supply which is more
traceable and is working with an organization called Proforest towards achieving this goal (Global,
43). General Mills believes that its purchasing practices can help push the industry towards buying
sustainably produced palm oil. While General Mills is making an effort to make their supply chain of
palm oil more traceable, the company could deploy on a program that would work with the indigenous
peoples whose rights are sometimes threatened due to palm oil production practices.

The Varying Personas of People in Twitter and in Real-life
The Varying Personas of People in Twitter and in Real life Tom Marvolo Riddle from J.K. Rowling s
Harry Potter series had stored parts of his soul into different inanimate objects called horcruxes which
caused him to lose control of himself and become the infamous, Lord Voldemort. This gave him the
ability to live even though his physical body was gone and his soul continued to thrive in his set of
carefully selected objects, patiently waiting for the right time to strike. While the world of Harry
Power is only a work of fiction, social networking sites have given ordinary persons the ability to
create their own set of horcruxes , not through inanimate objects but through various social
networking accounts. Through these modern horcruxes , people can divide the different personalities
they possess into their social networking accounts to reach a wider set of audiences and live in the
world of the Internet. Social networking sites have become popular over the years, like twitter, which
allows users to present themselves through their tweets using photos, hyperlinks, or hashtags. Boyd
(2010) argued that social media platforms like Twitter encourages members to use their actual
identities but it does not mean people are presenting themselves online the way they do in real life. A
real life persona is an identity that a person uses to present himself in the real world according to
Goldbeck et al. (2011) while an online persona is an identity that a user establishes

The Dataset Diabetes Details From Efron Et Al
Individual Project 1
Introduction
This report will cover the dataset diabetes details from Efron et al.(2003). Throughout this report, we
will explore the potential relationship between the ten predictor variables: age, sex, BMI, average
blood pressure, and six blood serum measurements (tc, ldl, hdl, tch, ltg, glu) on a quantitative measure
of disease progression one year after the baseline. There are 442 diabetes patients, or records in the
dataset. In this report, we will explore different methods and cross validation techniques to understand
these sample datasets leveraging linear regression, ridge regression, lasso method and metrics like our
MSE, the mean prediction error and standard errors of the test dataset. First, we will ... Show more

With the positive coefficients, we will see an increase in one unit of each variable separately compared
with the advancement in diabetes. With a 0.05 parameter, the linear regression model selects 5
predictor variables with significance, age, tc, ldl, tch, and glu. To validate the assumption, we can plot
the residuals versus the fitted values to see if there are any indications of signs of random
distributions. For the residual plot, we see there are no indications or violations of random distribution
and can calculate the MSE of the model, which is 3111.265. Next, we will leverage the best subset
method to select the predictor variables that are truly impactful to the model.
Best Subset Model
With our best subset method, we can leverage our lowest BIC metric to select the best model. We can
plot out best subset method and pinpoint the number of variables to select. The plot below showcases
that the lowest point or value of BIC, contains 6 variables. We leverage the BIC metric because it
places a penalty on models with more or many variables. Meaning, the mode variable a model has, the
bigger the penalty. We can review the coefficients, standard errors, t value, and the p values for the
best subset method with the significant six variables. Our MSE metric for the 6 variable best subset
model is 3090.483, a slight decrease from our linear regression model.

Continued moves to offshore locations are causing many consumers to look twice at companies that
use this tactic for an increased market share (Stones, 2003). The final issue identified is the possibility
of litigation by the Union officials.
Opportunity Identification There are many opportunities for Global Communications in moving
forward with its plan of action. The first opportunity is the possibility of increased technical
sophistication by partnering with a satellite provider to offer video services and a satellite version of
Broadband. This in turn will allow GC the opportunity to increased market share. By providing the
consumer with a more diverse product to choose from, GC will be able to gain a competitive edge in
the market and garner new customers in the process. Another opportunity found is the chance to cut
unit cost by outsourcing the call center to India or Ireland. This move will allow GC the chance to
become a key player in the global arena. It will also provide GC with a labor force that is technically
advanced to meet the needs of a growing market at a lower price (Rossheim, 2006). The combination
of all of these opportunities will provide GC with the much needed profitability capabilities to sustain
its operations for the next three years as well as produce a higher yield for stockholders.

The Neurology of Love
The Neurology of Love
Major Research Area The major research area discussed in the selected article is the neurology of love
specifically, the brain activity observed through functional magnetic resonance imaging techniques
(fMRI) observed when study participants viewed images of their long term spouses (Acevedo et al,
2011). This is part of a larger area of research that aims to define and measure the impact that feelings
of love have on the brain and the neurological system, or perhaps the processes and activities in the
brain that are causal of the feelings of romantic love. Research in this area has been undertaken from
many different angles and with a variety of reliable and relevant findings, yet the actual knowledge of
how love works in the brain remains fairly limited (Erwin, 1999; Emanuele et al, 2006). Studies of
initial feelings f romantic love during early stages of attraction, dating, and among newlyweds is
somewhat more extensive and the results verified in numerous studies, however long term love is not
nearly as well researched and appears to be more complex, making it more difficult to state
conclusions with any degree of certainty (Emanuele et al, 2006; Acevedo et al, 2011). Both for
intrinsic reasons and because feelings of love are associated with mating behaviors, in humans as well
as other species, this research areas is highly important (Fisher et al, 2006). Increased dopamine levels
and overall activity in certain areas of the brain known to be

Rudyard Kipling s The Man Who Would Be King Essay
Rudyard Kipling s The Man who Would Be King deals with man s ability to rule. The character
Dravot s success and failure in ruling derives from the perception of him as a god, instead of a king.
Kipling uses the perception of Dravot as a god to show that though a king can rule as a god, he
becomes a king by being human.
Dravot gains kingly power by being perceived as a god. The perception of him as a god occurs
through his actions and luck. After helping the first village Peachy and he find in Kafiristan, Dravot
takes power from the former leaders. He becomes more than a leader to the people, however, as every
morning Dravot sat by the side of old Imbra, and the people came and worshipped. That was Dravot s

chap falls flat on his face at Dravot s feet and kisses em. Luck again, says Dravot, they say it s the
missing Mark that no one could understand the why of (95). The displaying of the mark proves Dravot
as a god, since only the Gods know that (99). Dravot establishes his kingdom by ruling as a god, not a
king.
Dravot s perception as a god leads to his downfall by conflicting with his kingly aspirations. He
intends to establish a dynasty, and he needs a Queen to breed a King s son for the King (98). Dravot
plans to chose a woman from amongst his tribes; alas, his people are skeptical of this, for How can
daughters of men marry Gods or Devils? (99). Dravot s god appearance directly conflicts with his
aspiration for a dynasty; he cannot find a wife who will want him as a god, yet he needs a woman to
bear his children. He ignores all warnings and proceeds to find and marry his queen. The downfall of
Dravot occurs on his wedding day, as his bride bites him The slut s bitten me! says he, clapping his
hand to his neck, and sure enough, his hand was red with blood (100). The sight of blood awakens the
natives to Dravot s mortality. Shrieks of Not a God, not a Devil, but only a man! (100) proclaim in the
valley. The natives turn on Dravot, outraged at having thought him a god.
Dravot s acceptance of death defines him as a king. He

Negative emotions may undermine a negotiator s ability to analyze the situation accurately, which
adversely affects individual s outcomes. (Lewicki, J. R., Barry, B., Saunders, M. D., 2011). Due to
problems between Smith and Schmidt, Peter Smith resigned from the board in December 1991.
Immediately, following his departure the board approved of a $55 million capital project for
construction of MCA s new facility, $37.5 million of which was guaranteed by the board. The Smiths
vanished from the art scene at the end of 1991 and neglected all payments on their $5 million promise

Interest align vs. opposing the position
When two people take opposite sides on any particular issue in a dispute, they both often refuse to
budge from their divergent viewpoints. Most likely outcome is a stalemate. If a solution is found then
both will win. Negotiation interests largely relate to basic human needs. They are powerful influences
in our decision making processes. Interests not only include those tangible desires which correspond
to the specific problem at hand such as increasing sales or productivity. They also link to our more
basic human emotions that are less obvious to the participants (Negotiations).

Theme Of Corruption In Huck Finn
There is a quote, at the base of the Statue of Liberty that reads; Give me your tired, your poor. Your
huddled masses yearning to breathe free... This quote reflects the feeling of great opportunity many
immigrants felt they would receive upon coming to America. This was also the mentality many
American believed all received through our constitution s promise of; life, liberty, and the pursuit of
happiness. In Mark Twain s novel, Huckleberry Finn, the structure of the main character s relationship
with society is made to show the reader the toxicity of the Reconstruction Era showing that despite
what people believed about the time period after the civil war was a lot like the period before. Par
consequence of Huck Finn s structure, the era twenty five years later known as the Progressive Era
could also be used as a location for a similar novel. The important aspects of Huck Finn that would go
towards any paralleling novel, would be, the elements of a young child torn between their society and
themselves, the themes of racial intolerance, and the themes of societal corruption. Like Huck Finn,
this novel would be read differently by different people of different descents of the year 1900, and the
people of today.
After stating the above, it is important for a discourse on the structure of Huck Finn s character to take
place. Huck Finn is a young boy of about twelve or fourteen, who in addition to feeling a great sense

Examples Of Racism In Remember The Titans
Remember the Titans
How does gerry overcome his own racism throughout the film Remember the Titans directed by Boaz
Yakin?
My essay is about the issue of racism, how it is still alive today and that it can be overcome.
Racism is a far reaching issue in almost all countries around the world. It can be found in wealthy
societies, poor societies, sports, politics,in friendship groups, in the workplace, schools in fact every
where. Even though we have had civil wars, world wars and acts of terrorism through history and
today, racism is very much alive. All though this is all sad it can be overcome and in Rember the
Titans it is.

largest fertile land. Edfu contains a temple devoted to Horus, the falcon god. This is the youngest and
best preserved Temple, as well as the second largest after Karnak. The Temple was built during the

ruled under the Ptolemaic Dynasty. This was the last dynasty of independent Egypt. The Temple at
Edfu was built on top of an earlier temple to Horus, which was orientated east west instead of the
current north south position. It was built in GrecoRoman style, which embodies both the Greek and

The Polish And African Americans
Over many generations long before our creation were our ancestors. They had many trials and long
suffering to endure. Many travelled and migrated from place to place to gain freedom. Some of our
ancestors were captured and became slaves. This was not only for African American, American
Indians, Hispanics, Asian Americans, Middle Easterners, North West, South and East Europeans. It
was for all minority groups, from religion to sex gender, women, the elderly and people with
disabilities. Here is one example of the Polish Americans groups and how they were affected; and
what happened or changed over time in the process of migration to America.

Although, many Polish came to the U.S. unwillingly many felt that work was more important than

children ranging from ages 8 through 12 have minimum schooling. Their practice was first
communion, school at a minimum of two years and then work. It was strongly felt that the U. S.
education was a waste of time and could potentially become dangerous to undermine the traditional
ways of life, instead of being brain washed by American life. Polish did not want to be bothered by the
educational system providing children with strict morals and disciplined atmospheres; a high school
diploma was the least of their worries a paycheck meant more.
(Wikipedia, 2015) During the time from 1795 to 1918 the Polish state did not exist and all of its
borders were destroyed during World War I and World War II. In 1940 this caused 50% of the Polish
to marry other American ethnics with no exemptions. Many immigrant families found adjusting was
too difficult which then lead to crime, delinquency, divorce, desertion, prostitution, and economic

Hyperthermia And Chemotherapy Essay
The use of electromagnetic waves in therapeutic applications has existed for many decades.
Nowadays, the therapies that use non ionising radiation and are available for clinical use lie on the
thermal effects of low frequency electromagnetic waves, from radio frequencies to optical frequencies.
Hyperthermia and thermal ablation are currently used to treat various types of cancers, either by
killing the cancerous cells or by locally and selectively enhancing the efficiency of chemotherapeutic
drugs and radiation treatment. Hyperthermia treatment elevates the tissue temperature between 40 °C
and 45 °C, for altering the functional and structural properties of enzymatic proteins that make tumour
more sensitive to radiation and chemotherapy. Thermal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the complexity and heterogeneity of human brain structure and mechanisms, such as nerve
stimulation, blood circulation and homeostasis, complicates the effort for predicting the temperature
rise and distribution generated by one or multiple electromagnetic sources inside the brain tissue.
Nevertheless, it is of high importance to monitor and control the temperature changes during these
procedures in order to minimise the severe side effects of elevated brain temperatures for long
durations. To this end, non invasive techniques that exhibit enhanced sensitivity and specificity
thermometric are required for spatial and real time temperature monitoring.
Nanotechnology offers enhanced localisation of treatment delivery to brain diseased sites, including
hyperthermia, thermal ablation, as well as chemotherapeutic drug delivery and gene therapy. The
procedure may also be monitored with various ionising or non ionising imaging modalities.
Theranostics is an emerging medical field that uses nanoparticles for combining diagnosis and
treatment on a single nanoscale platform.
In this paragraph, multimodal systems for thermal electromagnetic treatments and real time
temperature monitoring and/or visualisation of the anatomical area of interest are presented
emphasising microwave technology. Additionally, novel approaches for combined therapy and
diagnosis using non ionising radiation in a nanoscale level are presented in the last

Fairly Short Book , Guys vs. Men , is his perspective on the difference between Guys and Men. While

While this may seem like a pointless test because, really, what difference does it make how fast a
journalist can run the forty yard dash? This matters a great deal to guys. Guys will use any excuse
possible to show just how much of a guy they really are. Now you might be wondering if it hurts a
guy s feelings when he looses a challenge? Well, to be honest, guys may not even have feelings.
One of the parts of Guyhood , as Barry calls it, is that pondering one s deep innermost feelings is not
something guys spend much time doing. Other than an extreme loyalty to a sports team, or a fear of
bridal showers, there is the question of where or not guys actually have deep innermost feelings. Guys
can spend an entire day together, not say more than 4 words to each other, and still have
communicated everything they needed to that day. While some people may think this is not possible,
Barry says that, for guys, it really is. A lot of guys don t use words at all. They communicate entirely
by nonverbal methods, such as sharing bait.
What exactly is a Guy ? Well, as Barry says I don t know. I haven t though that much about it. While
he may not have given it much thought, he explains the difference in a couple ways. He tells us that
guys like to buy neat things that they don t really need. He also states that guys will rise to meet a
pointless challenge. And when it comes to feeling, Barry says that, if they even have them, guys are

Martha Irvine s Bros Before Hos
Martha Irvine, a graduate of the University of Michigan published an article titled Queer Evolution
which talked about how the word Queer itself has evolved into the mainstream. Originally the word s
definition was to describe something as odd or weird. Society utilized the word Queer as an insult to
the LGBTQ community. As more sexual orientations are being discovered, Queer became a more
accepted word in the gay community in order to make things simpler. Irvine s essay showed that
whatever word we use, can affect a person depending on the intention, and the tone of how it s being
said. Irvine s essay is very similar to Deborah Tannen s essay You re Wearing That which talks about
the relationship between mother and daughter and how words have established expectations for
women based on their appearance and behavior. Another essay that well connects with Tannen and
Irvine s articles is a section from a book written by Michael Kimmel titled Bros Before Hos : The Guy
Code. Kimmel talks about The Guy Code , rules that a man should always follow in order to be
considered a real man. Words are the reason why these standards have been established for all genders
and sexualities. The relationships between parents and children would be better if words were
replaced, which would abolish the expectations that society has for men and women. Many decades
ago, The LGBTQ community were seen as the worst of society, they were labeled as the lowest of the

video game that scares parents and behavioral experts. There has been a debate on whether people
who play video games later have violent behavior. Throughout the years, video games continue to
show images portraying violence. Tragedies like Newton has caused many well known people or
celebrities to give in their input to why violence learned by video games should be stopped or better
regulated. People like Donald Trump, Ralph Nader, and Wayne LaPierre claim that video games and
violence are linked and can be seen throughout society. The government has proposed alternatives to
diminishing consumption so that violence might decrease in our society, but with this they also want
to understand the influence violent video games have on today s youth. Although, many would find
Mario and Pokemon to be the most popular in the video game industry, first person shooter games are

Fedex Express At The Fedex Corporation
In 1978, the FedEx Corporation sent out its annual report noting that Federal deregulation,
recapitalization, and public offering were credited as the impetus for record sales and earnings (FedEx
Corporation, 1978). At the close of the report, the chairman of the board credited the employees as the
most important factor in such favorable outcomes. Nearly 40 years later, the message and tone of the
FedEx Corporation (2015a) Annual Report was again boasting a transformative year, and crediting its
employees. But the success of FedEx Corporation, and specifically its air cargo and freight services
(known as FedEx Express), does not rely solely on the hard work of people. Instead, success is the
result of a vision, philosophy, approach, and perhaps simply some good fortune; all of which can be
found in closer look at the making of FedEx Express.
A Brief History of FedEx Express
In 1965, while attending Yale University as undergraduate student, a young Fred Smith submitted a
term paper detailing his vision of how the economic and logistical challenges facing delivery of time
sensitive shipments could be resolved using a simple, yet revolutionary, approach (Reichert, 2000). At
the time, air freight was primarily transported via air passenger flights. The thesis was that the
problem was air freight service being an add on to air passenger service, and the solution was to create
an air freight industry (Reichert, 2000). Although it was 50 years ago that Fred Smith received

Nectar In A Sieve Gender Inequality Essay
The Damage of Gender Inequality in Nectar in a Sieve Nectar in a Sieve, a novel by Kamala
Markandaya, tells the tale of a woman named Rukmani and the numerous tragedies and challenges she
faces in life during a sudden phase of modernization in India, brought on by imperialism. In the novel,
Rukmani, born wealthy and well learned, is married off at 12 years old to an older man, a poor tenant
farmer named Nathan. Following this, the book goes on to chronicle the struggles she faces, such as
poverty, famine, illness, and the death of many loved ones. Because women are considered inferior to
men, this causes further hardship (in already difficult circumstances) in Rukmani s journey. One of the
first examples of how sexism leads to further misfortune in Rukmani s life, is the expectation that
women get married at a young age to be a submissive and obedient wife. Rukmani, as a child, was a

Separation Of Powers And The United Kingdom s...
This essay is aimed to focus on and examine the importance of having a separation of powers and the
reasons for having same in the United Kingdom s constitution. We shall further look into the structure
of the United Kingdom s constitution whilst assessing its somewhat unclear separation of powers
which exist and assess the reasons why the United Kingdom s system of government does not adhere
to the doctrine of the separation of powers. The separation of powers is defined as the political
doctrine of constitutional law under which the branches of government are divided to prevent an abuse
of power. These three branches are the Legislative, Executive and Judicial and are assigned special
powers to maintain a check and balance on each other. In this essay, we shall further go on to discuss
the roles and functions of each of the mentioned branches of government and the extent to which this
defined separation of power is enforced and/or practiced in the United Kingdom s system of
government taking into account the traditional structure that has been maintained over the years.
Aristotle states, There are three elements in each constitution ...first, the deliberative, which discusses
everything of common importance; second the officials; and third, the judicial element. These three
elements as defined by Aristotle are now known as our Legislative, Executive and Judicial arms of the
United Kingdom s system of government.

The Threat of Human Cloning Essay
The human genome is constructed of four simple chromosomes, each of which is represented by a
single capital letter; G, A, C, and T. These simple chemicals are the building blocks of life, and act as
the blueprints for one of the most complicated biological structures in the known universe; the human.
Strands of these chromosomes billions of letters long provide a uniqueness that guarantees
individuality in a swiftly growing world. Is not individuality after all one of the most highly acclaimed
American ideals? Does it not compose the backbone of freedom, our country s founding doctrine? It
most assuredly does, and individuality therefore, is one of the most integral parts of human society.

Cloning cannot be tolerated in society anywhere, not because of the ramifications on the individual
countries and their cultures, but more importantly because of the mental state that a clone would
inevitably have to cope with. The ability to clone humans is in essence the ability to steal a piece of
someone s individuality, which we have already closely associated as being a prime evil. The ancient
philosopher Rene Descartes stated That in order to understand the passions of the soul its functions
must be distinguished from those of the body (Hallman, 40). That is, the soul and body must have
distinctions, and this I agree with for the sake of understanding the mechanics and interactions of the
two. However after this has been established the line must be drawn.
George Johnson, believes that each person, whether they be a clone or not, should understandably
have his own soul created by the composition of previous thoughts and experiences (Nussbaum,
Sunstein 69). The example we are provided with references the unique nature of twins. According to
this reasoning, twins grow up together, composed of the same genetic makeup, but because of
personal experiences result in different persons (69). If this truly is the case then cloning does not
accomplish what it is intended for in the first place. Likewise he argues, clones who share exact
genome matches will also become different people as a

  • 2. Advantage And Weaknesses Of Absolute Advantage 1. Absolute advantage is the theory that a nation specializes in something that it is most efficient at producing. Absolute advantage is based on productivity. Nation that can produce a good and require the least quantity of input is considered to have an absolute advantage. On the other, comparative advantage is based on opportunity cost. Even though that nation may not have the absolute advantage, it still can produce the good if it has the lowest opportunity cost as compared to another nation. Absolute advantage came before comparative advantage. The comparative advantage theory came as a response to the weaknesses of absolute advantage theory, one of which was the fact that it does not give guidance for nations that do not have absolute advantage. Comparative advantage brings in the idea that nations with no absolute advantage can still specialize if those nations are capable of producing the product at a lower opportunity cost. For example, Nation 1 has absolute advantage over both Good 1 and Good 2, but if Nation 2 has a comparative advantage (can produce at lower opportunity cost) over Good 2 (but not Good 1), then Nation 1 can specialize in Good 1 and Nation 2 can specialize in Good 2. 2. Comparative advantage. If being selfish, perhaps a nation would choose to have absolute advantage. Seeking absolute advantage is like obtaining a monopoly of a certain industry. Many of us are aware that governments like the US are continually eliminating monopolies because they are taking over smaller businesses in the same industry. Absolute advantage is based on the idea of WINNER LOSER. When a nation tries to have an absolute advantage in something, it means that the other nations lose the chance in that something. In contrast, comparative advantage is based on a WIN WIN concept. Any nation can engage in that particular production of goods even if it does not have an absolute advantage. Comparative is better than absolute advantage in that it encourages more nations to engage in international trade. 3. National and Individual Benefits of Absolute Advantage: a. Both nations benefit by using the resources most effectively (resources are not wasted). b. Both nations only focus on what they have absolute ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Negative Effects Of Indian Residential Schools In Canada The Canadian government created an Indian Residential school system which demonstrated racial discrimination and caused many Indigenous families to suffer, in the year of 1883. However, the concept was not simple, for all the injustice happening in these schools. This highlights the mistakes made, due to Canada s government policies. Proving that the government is not always righteous toward various communities. The government s choices caused a cultural genocide which impacts the new generation in Canada s modern society. These religion driven schools destroyed the Indigenous society. This is fragment of Canadian history that confounds both ones who were responsible for the cause and those who did not take action toward the dilemma. However, the event changed Canada as a whole. Although the catastrophic idea of Indian residential schools, coming to reality caused plenty of treachery, it helped to advance the perspective of people, to build Canada into the country it is today, although there is a question that follows the concept even today, will the virtues learn be enough to repair the damage done? These schools did many wrong things, one of which included performing a variety of nutritional and medical experiments on the students without them consenting or their parents/guardians knowing. A great number of the aboriginal students, which were used as subjects were killed due to the harsh experiments. Later, the statistics shown proved none of those experiments led to ... • 4. My Cultural Aspects Of My Culture In Cape Verdean A culture is a set of characteristics of a particular group of people. It emcopasses language, social aspect, such as relegion, cuisine, social habits,, music, and arts. I considered my culture to be Cape Verdean. I was born and raised in Cape Verde until I was fourteen. My country was colonized by the Portuguese, so there are a lot common culture aspects between Cape Verde and Portugal . One of the results of colonization was implementation of catholicism as a primary religion in my country. It was not until recent years that other forms of religious started to emerge in Cape Verde. However, for some people who strong practice catholicism there is a strong push back against those who aren t from the same religion. This has raised a lot religion conflict not only with foreign people who come to Cape verde from different countries in Africa, but it has also originated conflicts amongst Cape Verdeans who have a different belief. Into what region or geographical section or world were you born? What messages have you received about people from this region or geographical area? Cape Verde is located right in center of the Atlantic Ocean, 500 km off the Western Coast of Africa. In recent years, more people have started to questioning the location of Cape Verde because unlike other countries in Africa, Cape Verde is located outside of the African continent. I identify myself to be African because I see that there is a lot cultural similarities between my country ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Importance Of The Left Brain And Right Brain Theory n the 1960s while studying patients with brain injuries, Roger Sperry discovered that the brain s right and the left hemispheres performed certain jobs. While each side is connected by the Corpus Callosum which sends messages back and forth, each hemisphere functions differently. The left brain versus right brain theory is based on Sperry s findings. The theory is that people are either left brained or right brained, meaning that one side of their brain is dominant (Pietrangelo, 2017, para. 7). The left side of the brain is responsible for language, logical thinking, math, science, writing and controls the right side of the body. While the right side of the brain is responsible for imagination, creativity, art, visualizing feelings, body awareness and controls the left side of the body. This theory has led many to believe that your personality, preferences, and learning styles are connected to the idea that you are left brained or right brained. There are many quick assessments available today to test your brain s hemispheric preference. The results of my hemispheric preference assessment revealed that I am dominantly left brained. I scored 24/36 points for the left hemisphere, 9/36 points for the right hemisphere and only 2/36 points for using both hemispheres together. Based on these results I am a right handed, logical thinker, that is good in math and science. This is partly true, while I am right handed and do perform well in science, I struggle with math. I really ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Scepticism In The Handmaids Tale The Handmaid s Tale is a dystopian novel by Margaret Atwood from 1985, describing the totalitarian theocratic regime of the Republic of Gilead. It contains many elements associated with dystopian stories, including misery, oppression and violence, to quite an extreme extent. Because of this, The Handmaid s Tale has been banned in certain secondary schools in North America and Europe. The novels stirred up reactions of disgust, anger and horror. However, according to Atwood, none of the monstrosities in the book are new. I made a rule for myself: I would not include anything that human beings had not already done in some other place or time, or for which the technology did not already exist. (...) all had precedents, and many were to be found ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Gileadean leaders demand Handmaid s to be in good condition, in order to give birth to a strong and healthy next generation. This shows through the limitations and requirements in the Handmaid s nutrition and the obligatory examinations by doctors. A student nowadays is not familiar with the close monitoring of offspring portrayed in the book. This reader is used to a society where everybody is allowed to have children, regardless of their condition and without having to worrying about the genes they pass on. For this reason, the reader might be shocked by the power exercised by the Gileadean government in terms of offspring. The Nazi ideology, however, includes the striving for one strong race, too. In the case of The Handmaid s Tale, the focus on offspring is mostly a result of low reproduction rates, whereas the Nazi regime based it on its ideas of superiority of the Aryan race over others. Though the justification differs, the Nazi reader is still probably more accepting and understanding towards this part of the novel. In short, the Dutch student might consider the monitoring of good offspring more shocking and inhumane than the Nazi ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. General Mills And Its Effects On The Environment Essay 1. General Mills launched an initiative in 2013 to train farming families how to cure the vanilla that they grow, in order to increase their earnings (Global, 41). One way that General Mills might be able to approve upon this program is by making sure that the families know what is fair market price for their cured vanilla, so that the families are not taken advantage of when selling cured vanilla to parties besides General Mills. 2. General Mills is providing farm automation, equipment and training to increase cocoa yields as well as to improve the education and health in the area. Part of this program includes providing farmers with pesticides in order to reduce the amount of crops that are lost to waste (Global, 42). One way that General Mills can improve this initiative is to make sure they are providing the farmers with organic pesticides, which would reduce the impact of the pesticides on the environment. 3. General Mills is currently moving their supplier base towards a supply which is more traceable and is working with an organization called Proforest towards achieving this goal (Global, 43). General Mills believes that its purchasing practices can help push the industry towards buying sustainably produced palm oil. While General Mills is making an effort to make their supply chain of palm oil more traceable, the company could deploy on a program that would work with the indigenous peoples whose rights are sometimes threatened due to palm oil production practices. ... • 8. The Varying Personas of People in Twitter and in Real-life The Varying Personas of People in Twitter and in Real life Tom Marvolo Riddle from J.K. Rowling s Harry Potter series had stored parts of his soul into different inanimate objects called horcruxes which caused him to lose control of himself and become the infamous, Lord Voldemort. This gave him the ability to live even though his physical body was gone and his soul continued to thrive in his set of carefully selected objects, patiently waiting for the right time to strike. While the world of Harry Power is only a work of fiction, social networking sites have given ordinary persons the ability to create their own set of horcruxes , not through inanimate objects but through various social networking accounts. Through these modern horcruxes , people can divide the different personalities they possess into their social networking accounts to reach a wider set of audiences and live in the world of the Internet. Social networking sites have become popular over the years, like twitter, which allows users to present themselves through their tweets using photos, hyperlinks, or hashtags. Boyd (2010) argued that social media platforms like Twitter encourages members to use their actual identities but it does not mean people are presenting themselves online the way they do in real life. A real life persona is an identity that a person uses to present himself in the real world according to Goldbeck et al. (2011) while an online persona is an identity that a user establishes ... • 9. The Dataset Diabetes Details From Efron Et Al Individual Project 1 Introduction This report will cover the dataset diabetes details from Efron et al.(2003). Throughout this report, we will explore the potential relationship between the ten predictor variables: age, sex, BMI, average blood pressure, and six blood serum measurements (tc, ldl, hdl, tch, ltg, glu) on a quantitative measure of disease progression one year after the baseline. There are 442 diabetes patients, or records in the dataset. In this report, we will explore different methods and cross validation techniques to understand these sample datasets leveraging linear regression, ridge regression, lasso method and metrics like our MSE, the mean prediction error and standard errors of the test dataset. First, we will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With the positive coefficients, we will see an increase in one unit of each variable separately compared with the advancement in diabetes. With a 0.05 parameter, the linear regression model selects 5 predictor variables with significance, age, tc, ldl, tch, and glu. To validate the assumption, we can plot the residuals versus the fitted values to see if there are any indications of signs of random distributions. For the residual plot, we see there are no indications or violations of random distribution and can calculate the MSE of the model, which is 3111.265. Next, we will leverage the best subset method to select the predictor variables that are truly impactful to the model. Best Subset Model With our best subset method, we can leverage our lowest BIC metric to select the best model. We can plot out best subset method and pinpoint the number of variables to select. The plot below showcases that the lowest point or value of BIC, contains 6 variables. We leverage the BIC metric because it places a penalty on models with more or many variables. Continued moves to offshore locations are causing many consumers to look twice at companies that use this tactic for an increased market share (Stones, 2003). The final issue identified is the possibility of litigation by the Union officials. Opportunity Identification There are many opportunities for Global Communications in moving forward with its plan of action. The first opportunity is the possibility of increased technical sophistication by partnering with a satellite provider to offer video services and a satellite version of Broadband. This in turn will allow GC the opportunity to increased market share. By providing the consumer with a more diverse product to choose from, GC will be able to gain a competitive edge in the market and garner new customers in the process. Another opportunity found is the chance to cut unit cost by outsourcing the call center to India or Ireland. This move will allow GC the chance to become a key player in the global arena. It will also provide GC with a labor force that is technically advanced to meet the needs of a growing market at a lower price (Rossheim, 2006). The combination of all of these opportunities will provide GC with the much needed profitability capabilities to sustain its operations for the next three years as well as produce a higher yield for stockholders. • 11. The Neurology of Love The Neurology of Love Major Research Area The major research area discussed in the selected article is the neurology of love specifically, the brain activity observed through functional magnetic resonance imaging techniques (fMRI) observed when study participants viewed images of their long term spouses (Acevedo et al, 2011). This is part of a larger area of research that aims to define and measure the impact that feelings of love have on the brain and the neurological system, or perhaps the processes and activities in the brain that are causal of the feelings of romantic love. Research in this area has been undertaken from many different angles and with a variety of reliable and relevant findings, yet the actual knowledge of how love works in the brain remains fairly limited (Erwin, 1999; Emanuele et al, 2006). Studies of initial feelings f romantic love during early stages of attraction, dating, and among newlyweds is somewhat more extensive and the results verified in numerous studies, however long term love is not nearly as well researched and appears to be more complex, making it more difficult to state conclusions with any degree of certainty (Emanuele et al, 2006; Acevedo et al, 2011). Both for intrinsic reasons and because feelings of love are associated with mating behaviors, in humans as well as other species, this research areas is highly important (Fisher et al, 2006). The character Dravot s success and failure in ruling derives from the perception of him as a god, instead of a king. Kipling uses the perception of Dravot as a god to show that though a king can rule as a god, he becomes a king by being human. Dravot gains kingly power by being perceived as a god. The perception of him as a god occurs through his actions and luck. After helping the first village Peachy and he find in Kafiristan, Dravot takes power from the former leaders. Dravot establishes his kingdom by ruling as a god, not a king. Dravot s perception as a god leads to his downfall by conflicting with his kingly aspirations. He intends to establish a dynasty, and he needs a Queen to breed a King s son for the King (98). Dravot plans to chose a woman from amongst his tribes; alas, his people are skeptical of this, for How can daughters of men marry Gods or Devils? (99). He ignores all warnings and proceeds to find and marry his queen. The downfall of Dravot occurs on his wedding day, as his bride bites him The slut s bitten me! says he, clapping his hand to his neck, and sure enough, his hand was red with blood (100). The sight of blood awakens the natives to Dravot s mortality. Shrieks of Not a God, not a Devil, but only a man! (100) proclaim in the valley. Fedex Express At The Fedex Corporation In 1978, the FedEx Corporation sent out its annual report noting that Federal deregulation, recapitalization, and public offering were credited as the impetus for record sales and earnings (FedEx Corporation, 1978). At the close of the report, the chairman of the board credited the employees as the most important factor in such favorable outcomes. Nearly 40 years later, the message and tone of the FedEx Corporation (2015a) Annual Report was again boasting a transformative year, and crediting its employees. But the success of FedEx Corporation, and specifically its air cargo and freight services (known as FedEx Express), does not rely solely on the hard work of people. Instead, success is the result of a vision, philosophy, approach, and perhaps simply some good fortune; all of which can be found in closer look at the making of FedEx Express. A Brief History of FedEx Express In 1965, while attending Yale University as undergraduate student, a young Fred Smith submitted a term paper detailing his vision of how the economic and logistical challenges facing delivery of time sensitive shipments could be resolved using a simple, yet revolutionary, approach (Reichert, 2000). At the time, air freight was primarily transported via air passenger flights. The thesis was that the problem was air freight service being an add on to air passenger service, and the solution was to create an air freight industry (Reichert, 2000). Although it was 50 years ago that Fred Smith received ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Nectar In A Sieve Gender Inequality Essay The Damage of Gender Inequality in Nectar in a Sieve Nectar in a Sieve, a novel by Kamala Markandaya, tells the tale of a woman named Rukmani and the numerous tragedies and challenges she faces in life during a sudden phase of modernization in India, brought on by imperialism. In the novel, Rukmani, born wealthy and well learned, is married off at 12 years old to an older man, a poor tenant farmer named Nathan. Following this, the book goes on to chronicle the struggles she faces, such as poverty, famine, illness, and the death of many loved ones. Because women are considered inferior to men, this causes further hardship (in already difficult circumstances) in Rukmani s journey. One of the first examples of how sexism leads to further misfortune in Rukmani s life, is the expectation that women get married at a young age to be a submissive and obedient wife. Rukmani, as a child, was a very smart and once wealthy girl, being literate (something most were not at the time); If it weren t for the fact ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These simple chemicals are the building blocks of life, and act as the blueprints for one of the most complicated biological structures in the known universe; the human. Strands of these chromosomes billions of letters long provide a uniqueness that guarantees individuality in a swiftly growing world. Is not individuality after all one of the most highly acclaimed American ideals? Does it not compose the backbone of freedom, our country s founding doctrine? It most assuredly does, and individuality therefore, is one of the most integral parts of human society. The importance of this ideal dictates that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Cloning cannot be tolerated in society anywhere, not because of the ramifications on the individual countries and their cultures, but more importantly because of the mental state that a clone would inevitably have to cope with. The ability to clone humans is in essence the ability to steal a piece of someone s individuality, which we have already closely associated as being a prime evil. The ancient philosopher Rene Descartes stated That in order to understand the passions of the soul its functions must be distinguished from those of the body (Hallman, 40). That is, the soul and body must have distinctions, and this I agree with for the sake of understanding the mechanics and interactions of the two. However after this has been established the line must be drawn. George Johnson, believes that each person, whether they be a clone or not, should understandably have his own soul created by the composition of previous thoughts and experiences (Nussbaum, Sunstein 69). The example we are provided with references the unique nature of twins. According to this reasoning, twins grow up together, composed of the same genetic makeup, but because of personal experiences result in different persons (69). If this truly is the case then cloning does not accomplish what it is intended for in the first place. Likewise he argues, clones who share exact genome matches will also become different people as a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
