North Land Winery Case Study Essay examples
ENGG439 Case Study Week 5
North Land Winery are a solid, well established, family based winemaker headquartered in
Wollongong, NSW. After ongoing success the vintners have addressed the idea of expanding their
wine distribution to Ontario situated in Eastern Canada.
So far NLW s most innovative product involves soil aged merlots and chardonnay grapes grown
in areas prone to wild fires which was labeled Deep Burn . The purpose of these wines were to
exploit these wild fires to give the wines smoky characteristics. Given the popularity of this flavor
in North American foods amp; beverages, this wine would be expected to pair well with many
Canadian palates, particularly red meat dishes. Ideally this product would be a key seller to ... Show

Each employee could be expected to generate $1,000,000 in sales.
The following rule is the basis for comparison between the two and the unknown variables can be
grouped using general arithmetic:
Cost of sales reps = Cost of own office
No.of employees * 10% of gross sales = Cost of set up amp; ongoing communication + No. of
employees * (Employee Base Salary + 5% of gross sales)
No. of employees * (0.10 * Selling Price * Volume of sales) = $100000 + No. of employees *
($25000 + 0.05 * Selling Price * Volume of Sales)
$100000 + No. of employees * $25000 = No. of employees * Volume of sales * Selling Price *
(0.10 0.05)
$2,000,000 + No. of employees * $500,000 = No. of employees * Volume of sales * Selling Price
Indifference point occurs when both sides are equal. As the figures used are annual, the ratio of
LHS to RHS * 1 year will determine the amount of time it takes for costs with sales
representative to match a sales office. The longer this takes, the more justifiable it is to run with
option 1. As there are a number of variables NLW should first research current and future demand
which will provide a good indication of turnover. Sales representatives can be kept to a minimum

Fast Cheap Fashion Lucy Siegle Summary
In this essay written by Lucy Siegle she explains the dangers of fast cheap fashion. She how
seasonal fashion that is bought is thrown away and how it is bad for the ecosystem. Then she goes
over what the consumer can do to fix the problem using facts and alternatives. Although the thesis is
not given it is implied that the more we buy fast fashionthe worse the ecosystem will get.
The primary purpose of this essay uses persuasive writing to get her point across. Informing the
reader about the eco dangers of buying outsourced clothing material. Most people often want the
cheaper alternative without going to the flea market or charity clothing banks. But all the clothes
get worn down, shrink, fade or just deteriorate in the end because the fabric is unsustainable.
Resulting in the t shirts and jeans to be tossed away and put into a landfill. Where they have been

The Pros And Cons Of The DREAM Act
About 400,000 illegal immigrants come to the United States each year, each one with their own
story and reasons. These illegal immigrants often have sorrowful stories that make you want to
sympathize with them, but these immigrants never think about how their presence affects the
United States. On September 5th, President Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced
the end of the DACA program; they contended that undocumented immigrants took economic
opportunities away from citizens and lawful permanent residents (DREAM). The DACA program
was created in 2012 by President Obama and allowed illegal immigrants to stay in the United
States. Recently, President Trump ended the program, but gave Congress a window to formulate a
better plan... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many proponents of the DREAM Act argue that these kids were brought to the United States before
they had a say in their life circumstances. Denying them hope and opportunity is punishment for an
act beyond their control (Fitz). Supporters of the DREAM Act continually advertise this argument;
They claim that the children are innocent, and the United States is treating these children unjustly,
but not rewarding them with legal residence and expensive college tuition subsidies is simply
withholding benefits to which they never had any entitlement in the first place (Mehlman). These
children are innocent, and deserve to be given an opportunity to come to the United States and have
a good education, but it should not be through the DREAM Act or illegal immigration. It is not un
American to prioritize United States citizens, and other immigrants waiting to enter the country
legally. A gross misconception is that DACA is only opposed by a radical few who want to hurt
innocent children and families, but a recent Quinnipiac University poll shows that Americans
across the political spectrum favor tougher enforcement of existing immigration laws over rolling
out the amnesty welcome wagon. (Malkin). Despite this poll, many patrons of the DREAM Act
think that continued amnesty is a right the United States is taking away, when in truth, the general
public supports tougher immigration law. The DREAM literally goes against popular opinion, as it
sponsors amnesty, and not harsher immigration

Pay Discrimination Case Study
Five individuals from the U.S. Ladies National Soccer Team got to be one of the most recent
prominent gatherings to demonstrate a red card to its manager in light of unlawful pay hones.
These individuals, Alex Morgan, Carli Lloyd, Hope Solo, Megan Rapinoe and Rebecca Sauerbrunn,
documented a discrimination charge against the United States Soccer Federation claiming that
individuals from the ladies group are unlawfully remunerated at a much lower rate than their
individuals from the United States Men s National Soccer Team. The discrimination charge is

Genetic and Congenital Disorders Case Study
A nurse is working in an obstetric department and caring for women immediately after delivery. Her
patient has recently delivered an infant who was diagnosed with Down syndrome or trisomy 21.
While doing her morning care, the mother was very upset and asked for more information on what
that diagnosis means for her child.
Down syndrome is a congenital birth defect, meaning that it can be seen at the time of birth.
Case Study Question 1
Trisomy 21 is an aneuploidy congenital disorder. This means that the cell had an abnormal number
of chromosomes. Normally, humans have 46 chromosomes, ... Show more content on

Maternal age seems to be the biggest correlation between babies having the disorder. Once you
know you are pregnant there is nothing you can do to prevent the baby from getting the disorder.
Conclusion
There is nothing you can really do to prevent a child from getting Trisomy 21, besides
encouraging women to have children at an earlier age. When the body ages the women s eggs also
age causing problems with meiosis within the egg. This being said, no mother should feel guilty
about her child getting the disorder.

The 1906 San Francisco Earthquake And Jack London s Reportings
The earthquake on April 18, 1906, in San Francisco is considered one of the most important
earthquakes ever. Ultimately, its main significance comes from the knowledge gained from it, not
just the size of it. It was the first large natural disaster captured with photographs. The geologists of
the time didn t know what could have caused such a large earthquake as plate tectonics wasn t a
very popular theory back then. Studying the movement and crust near the fault, Reid developed a
theory called Elastic Rebound theory, which is still used to this day to explain earthquakes (The
Great 1906 San Francisco Earthquake). Foreshocks began at approximately 5:12 AM California
time. Then, not half a minute later, the main earthquake occurred. The epicenter wasn t actually in
San Francisco, but it was close. Most of the damage in San Francisco was caused by fire which
burned the town for three consecutive days and nights. In areas along the fault line, most of the
damage was caused by shaking.
After the disaster occurred, the public had to obtain information on this earthquake from reports and
photographs, which had to be sent all across the country. One of the most influential reporters was
Jack London. His importance comes from his effectiveness in telling without pictures what was
happening in San Francisco. One of

Strategies For Prenatal Development
Asherin, Nichole WA1, PSY102 Development is a lifelong process consisting of four main stages
in which life goes through. Each stage of life has many ways of benefiting that particular time that
an individual is developing in. These show ways that individuals can determine for themselves what
is and is not beneficial to his/her development. These recommended strategies will psychologically
benefit the well being and growth of an individual from prenatal development through adulthood.
Prenatal development is the first stage that any individual being goes through. This stage is from
conception to birth. Due to mothers carrying the embryo, teratogens can be affected in this stage.
The book entails that individuals should avoid Teratogens because... Show more content on

One of the first developments in this stage is puberty, so the first strategy for this period is being
aware of when an individual is to begin puberty. This is important because it is likely that a young
woman will start developing before a young man. This may cause bullying and social confusion.
The book says that women tend to develop breasts by the age of ten, as well as having the first
menstrual period by the age of twelve and a half. While young men have their peak height spurt at
age fourteen and can start growing facial hair by age sixteen (Hockenbury et.al, 2016). Another
important part of the adolescent time period is social development. This is a time where the
individual finds their identity and explores new opportunities. The strategy to take home with this
new development is understanding that part of this stage will include peer relationships just as
much as parental relationships. Also, keeping in mind that young adults will experiment with new
relationships. The book says that parent adolescent relationships tend to be positive, as romantic
and sexual relationships also become increasingly important throughout the adolescent year
(Hockenbury et.al, 2016). All of these new experiments are beneficial to the growth of the

The Importance Of Free Will
Freedom is a very powerful word and it can mean so many different things for different people.
Some people would say that free will is the most important thing we have, but what does free will
really mean and how do we know that we are doing something because of our free will? Freedom
lies in expressing your own determinism, not somebody elseВґs. It is not the determinism that
makes a difference, but instead the ownership. If freedom is what we prefer, it is preferable to be
determined by forces that originate in ourselves and not in others. This is a passage from Free Will
written by Matt Ridley. According to this passage, determinism has a big impact on how our free
will works. We cannot control our determinism since that is something nature... Show more content

Ridley is discussing in this passage and throughout the entire text, the connection between free will,
and determinism in a generic aspect and environmental aspect. But what does determinism mean?
The belief that all events are caused by things that happened before them and that people have no
real ability to make choices or control what happens (Merriam WebsterВґs LearnerВґs Dictionary).
Understanding the meaning of determinism is vital to understand what Ridley wants to say in this
text. When Ridley states that freedom lies in our own determinism and not somebody elseВґs, he
means that every human being has its own determinism that is created from a genetic aspect and
an environmental aspect. Our freedom lies in our unique determinism and what is created
specifically for us. When we follow the determinism that has been creating within our self s,
then we are truly acting from our own free will. As he states, it is not the determinism that makes
a differences since determinism is already decided for us regardless of the decisions we make
since those decisions has been made on the foundation of something that happened to us, that we
might not even know affected us. If you want to look at it from the determinism in the genetic
point of view it is the same rules that apply, even if we think we are making a decision based on
our free will, it might be because of personality traits we inherited from our parents. I do agree
with the points he is making in this passage. I really think he is going deep into this subject and
exploring how we humans work. If I think about freedom and was asked to explain the word in
one sentence I think I would say something similar to: Freedom is when we are allowed to act and
think on our own without the pressure of any

The Influence Of Activism
This class has taught me how to engage in strategic lifelong activism. Activism is an umbrella
term referring to the promoting or campaigning of policy or social change on the cultural,
structural, or national level. Activism has been developed and practiced throughout history by
people like Jesus Buddha, Thoreau, and Dr. Martin Luther King (MLK). Thanks to these people
over the years activism has developed a clear and effective structure which has proven effective in
history and a number of cultures. In order to engage in effective lifelong activist one must be able
to conceptualize social justice, understand how oppression affects the motivation of individuals,
know the barriers to different activists, and develop and activism cycle, make... Show more content

This was done through a series of steps. The first step was to learn how to conceptualize social
justice. Understanding social justice is more than just knowing statistics, social justice requires
one to identify with others stories, develop a sense of motivation, and knowing barriers one will
face in one s journey. The next thing important to my own journey as a white male was
understanding how oppression affects the motivation of an individual. To me, this meant breaking
oppression down into non experiential and first hand experiences. Next was developing an
activism cycle this meant learning how to recognize the need for change, joining an organization,
taking action and following up by learning what one can do better in the future. Lastly, I learned
how to make my action as purposeful and as meaningful as possible. Developing the skills and
practices to be effective in lifelong advocacy is important if one wants to succeed in achieving
tangible change on the direct institutional or cultural

Present Tense In MSA
Present Tense
The present tense in MSA is usually indicated by the imperfective form. The imperfective form in
MSA is an ambiguous form. It can express all types of present tense in MSA, namely, it can be
used to give a right now reading, habitual present and present progressive. When researchers discuss
the present tense, they usually distinguish between two main groups of verbs that are state verbs
and dynamic or event verbs. State verbs usually give the right now reading. For example:

In contrast, dynamic verbs in the imperfective form in MSA usually have two possible
interpretations and the context or adverbs determine one of them. For example, verbs in the
imperfective form such as yamshi `walk or yakulu `eat can have the two interpretations.
Therefore, both verbs can be used with adverb like kull a yawm in `every day which denotes a
habitual interpretation or adverb like alaan `now which denotes a progressive, Also, they are called

Deep Sea Cephalopod Research Paper
It s something straight out of a cartoon, and it lives in the deepest parts of the ocean. The
creature is so adorable that scientists are considering naming it Opistoteuthis adorabilis. It floats
along without a care in the world, and uses its unusually large eyes to find its way around, and
some say to steal your heart as well. The deep sea cephalopod is garnering quite a bit of attention,
and according to Dr. Stephanie Bush, of the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the name is being considered
because they are really cute. A Monumentous Task This small creature requires extraordinary effort

It doesn t move very quickly, and it requires cold ocean waters to stay alive. To find one of your
own, you would have to sail deep into the Pacific Ocean and dive to a 200 to 600 meter depth.
The temperature at these levels is only 6 degrees Celsius, or about 42 degrees Fahrenheit. The
Right to a Name These cephalopods have been studied and collected since 1990, but it s only
now that researchers are considering naming them. Before a name can be given to a new
creature, the entire structure must be analyzed to determine whether they are dealing with a
new species or simply a related one. If it s a new species, the information is published in a
scientific journal. What scientists do know is that the species belongs to the Opistotheuthis
genus. This is an octopus species known for their smallish, condensed shape and webbed limbs.
Can I Keep It? If you re wondering whether you can adopt one of these creatures and keep it for
your own, the answer is no. Since they have extremely fragile bodies, and don t do well in less
then perfect condition, you would need to have an advanced degree in marine biology and lots of
time to successfully keep one alive in captivity. Still, you can find out more about these creatures at

Response To The Blank Page

Unit 1 Response: On Storytelling We all commonly assume that we act freely, that we make our
own decisions without regard to the opinions of those around us. We all like to think we create
our own stories, and choose the way we tell them. However, many of us are probably at least
tempted to wonder if this a thing completely within our control, how much of it is, and how we
can resist attempts of others to write our stories for us, regardless of what we actually desire.
Particularly when it comes to women, the society around us is very sure of what it wants our
stories to be, and who should tell them and when. This is, of course, a process that begins early. As

It is, of course, a story about storytelling, particularly the oral story telling through which humans
have passed down most of our stories for most of our history. Women in particular, even after the
advent of mass literacy, were barred for much of our history from education (and therefore the
ability to read), have been historically the torch bearers of oral culture. After all, garrulousness and
gossip are still stereotypes almost exclusively attributed to women. Of course an anti woman
society sees these qualities as bad things, rather than a means of shaping our reality and
connecting to the people around us, of forming and maintaining communities. The Blank Page is
another tale in which a woman tries to write her own story, despite the considerable pressures of
royal life encroaching in upon her. Her blank page represents the willingness of many women to
resist the attempts to tell or change their stories. Silence will speak says the old woman. Surely
this nameless princess was shunned by some and scorned by others, those who tried to use such
disapproval to make her change her story. I myself find comfort in the telling of her story by this
mysterious old woman, comfort in the idea that stories of women inimical to what men and society
have to say about us can be preserved, if only through word of mouth, by other

Course Review on The Era of Technological Evolution Essay
Every chapter in this course was very informative in its own way. Every era has experienced a
technological evolution, what matters the most is who adapts and get benefited from that
technology. One of the chapter which was very interesting was the The information systems and
the Design of work. Information technology in today s world has touched a new height whose
motto is to make things simpler. It was only with the help of technology we are able to shrink
our desktop computer so small that now we can make it fit easily in our pockets (Mobile Phones)
(Arvind, Richard Ann, 2005). One of the concepts which were focused is the fusion of IT in today

The second concept which is according to me is in the chapter Governance of information Systems
Organization. The main description about the IT governance process is that the decision making
rights in the company are being divided among the stakeholders who are in the enterprise and this
will also help to make and monitor the strategic and crucial decisions of the IT (Ryan, 2004). This
chapter also mentioned about the three models of governance which are centralized, decentralized
and federal. With the advancement of the information technology, the need of Information security
and governance has increased a lot. Every organization stores data which is an important asset to
them. This misuse of technology had led hackers to get into the company s system and steal or
provide harm to their data. So, in order to safe guard its data, a company has to follow a security
framework or practices. This is possible with the implementation of Information security
strategies, security policies, etc. I work in the security and compliance department at CMS at
one of my work is to do the gap analysis on the existing IT policies and update them in according
to the NIST (National Institute of Security and Technology) and COBIT (Control Objectives for
Information and Related Technology) standards. The IT security policies of CMS are being

Finding Vivian Maier is a very intriguing documentary film that traces and hunts the life story of
Vivian Maier. She was a nanny that happened to be a street photographer in Chicago, who has
taken more than 100,000 photographs. John Maloof a Chicago historian wrote, directed, and
produced the film with the help of Charlie Siskel. It all started when Maloof came across a box
full of negatives at an auction while doing some research. The auction house gave him the name

Maloof decided to exhibit them but there were still no signs of Vivian Maier. He bought more
boxes of negatives and boxes of some Maier s belongings. After some tracing and tracking down,
Maloof found out Maier s death. This did not stop him continuing his research for who Vivian
Maier really was.
Despite of the difficulty, Maloof searched and looked for all people who were possibly connected
to Vivian Maier. The focus of the documentary filmrevolved around the journey and the quest of
John Maloof in discovering more about the woman who has an extraordinary gift in taking
exemplary photographs. The film is mostly devoted to interviews and testimonials from different
people who had connections with Maier s life, mostly the children who grew up in Maier s care,
and from the two contemporary masters, Joel Meyerwitz and Mary Ellen Mark.
Vivian Maier was mostly remembered as a tall, awkward, and oddly dressed nanny in New York
and Chicago. At around 25 years old, she started working with a family in New York and after a
couple of years, she moved to Chicago still working as a nanny. She was never married and had
no children of her own. Most of the people interviewed talked about the camera she always carried

Taking a Look at the Original Sin
Original Sin In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth ex nihilo (out of nothing).
After God created the earth he made the adam out of the dust of the earth and by breathing into
his nostrils made the man living. Everything God created was Good, the man was also good but
only with woman was man complete. God created woman from the rib of Adam. Both Adam and
his partner Eve were both placed in the Garden of Edenwhere they were to live and eat from,
everything in the Garden except from the Tree of Knowledge, Good, and Evil. However one day
a serpent came to Eve and asked made her question the command of not eating from the tree. The
serpent told her that she could have knowledge and become like God if she ate from the tree. Both
Adam and Eveate from the tree and disobeyed God s divine command. God in turn cursed the
serpent as well as Adam and Eve. He told Adam that he would struggle and toil with the land and
also that he will return to the dust just as he was created from it. God had to punish Adam and Eve
for the disobedient act from where human corruption became apparent. After a British monk named
Pelagius fled Italy in 409 to escape an invasion and moved to Carthridge in North America, a clash
between this monk and Saint Augustine became inevitable. Both of these men who were teachers
and involved with the church had two completely opposite and opposing doctrines that were bound
to class. This inevitable debate finally occurred in what is known as the

An article by Anna Jo Bratton, Associated Press, describes well the dangers of my topic: piracy.
In the article, Bratton reported a recent legal matter that impacted Sarah Barg, a University of
Nebraska Lincoln sophomore, and her colleges. The RIAA, an anti piracy and plagiarism society
had suspected that many students at the university had been illegally downloading media content.
Burg received an email concerning the matter, but she was ignorant and considered it a fluke or

Christians uphold the belief that theft is sinful, but those of corrupt beliefs aren t included in

to be classified by the failure to give credit (pg. 203). This may be true if the act was unintentional,

Character Foils In Hamlet
In William Shakespeare s Hamlet, Hamlet has three main character foils: Laertes, Ophelia, and
Fortinbras.
Hamlet s main character foil is Laertes, son of Polonius and brother of Ophelia. At the beginning of
the play, we learn that Hamlets father is murdered by his uncle from the ghost of his father. The
ghost tells Hamlet The serpent that did sting thy father s life now wears his crown (I.2.41 42). In
Act III Scene 4 Hamlet kills Laertes father Polonius in Gertrude s chambers. The death of Hamlet s
dad had a very depressing effect on him. He asks himself many questions before taking revenge for
his father. Laertes, on the other hand, takes immediate action. Laertes quickly returns to France as
soon as he hears about Polonius death. Once

In this essay I am going to compare and contrast the governments of Japan and Mexico. I want to
analyze the effects and ramifications of political institutions within these countries. This essay will
contain but is not limited to discussing the following institutions: electoral systems, legislative
structures, and parties, executives, and federalism and subnational units. I would like to begin by
discussing the government of Japan. The Emperor of Japan is not merely the emblem of Japan, but
he is granted the power to propagate amendments of the Constitution, create policies and laws, and
execute cabinet orders. He also has the power to appoint both the Prime Minister and the Chief

A Councilors term of office is six years, and half of the members are elected every three years. A
candidate must be at least thirty years old to run for the House of Councilors. The House of
Representatives and the House of Councilors have almost the exact same powers. The House of
Representatives, however, heads that of the house of councilors. Executive power is conferred
upon the Cabinet, which comprises of the Prime Minister and less than seventeen Ministers of
State. The Cabinet has to quit all together when the position of Prime Minister becomes unfilled
or when the initial session of the Diet is convoked after a general election of members of the
House of Representatives. If the House of Representatives passes a non confidence resolution or
dismisses a confidence resolution the Cabinet will quit all together, unless the House of
Representatives is disbanded within ten days. (Sawe 2016) The election for the House of
Representatives is held every four years. A candidate must be at least twenty five years old to
run for office. The Prime Minister of Japan is a Japanese citizen who, appointed by the Emperor,
is designated from among the members of the Diet by a resolution. The Prime Ministers has the
power to appoint the Ministers of State and may relieve them of their job as he sees fit. His
primary role is submitting bills to the Diet and reporting on national affairs and international

Causes Of The Los Angeles Riots
The twentieth century brought with it many conflicts, such as both World Wars, the Great
Depression, and civil unrest, the latter of which its effects can still be seen today. The Civil Rights
Movement of the sixties, paved the way for more demonstrations during the last quarter of the
twentieth century. One of the greatest of these demonstrations was the Los AngelesRiots (commonly
known as the Rodney KingRiots) of nineteen ninety two. The Civil Rights Movement had a goal,
which was to end segregation and discrimination of African Americans, and to try to improve the
wellbeing by integrating both communities. This movement had led to many others, both peaceful
and violent. However, the goal between them all was the same. There has been many conflicts in
the past between African Americans and the Anglo community, where most were caused due to the
discrimination or taking out the anger they had after seeing themselves being treated a certain way.
Before the riots, racial tensions had already risen. There was lots of gang related activity and crime
in the poor communities of Los Angeles, where many were unemployed. These communities were
common to drug sweeps, where more than eighty officers tore apart a pair of apartment buildings,
leaving dozens homeless (History.com).
On the night of March third, nineteen ninety one, King had high levels of alcohol in his blood, due
to drinking. He had been involved in a pursuit by the police department of Los Angeles. As King

Economic Evaluation Essay
The change in health profiles of the population and the evolution of medical technology have made
more explicit the gap between what medicine can do and what is economically feasible (Fuchs,
2000). Resources to satisfy needs are scarce and every society must decide how better to allocate
the scarce resource among the different alternative uses. Economicstries to address the normative
question of which allocation of resources is best for the society. The answer to such question
depends crucially on the objective being pursued. When comparing different alternatives, under the
classical assumptions of competitive markets (the Arrow Debreu economy) and Pareto efficiency, a

This is the so called Hicks Kaldor criterion, which allows making judgements about policies
without making inter personal comparisons. However, there are two problems with this criterion:
marginal utility of income must be the same across individuals and it may be the case that a
movement back to the original allocation increase welfare, so it would be impossible to define
which allocation is better. Also, the information that would be needed to collect makes the
application of this criterion quite infeasible.
This is the theoretical basis for many cost benefit studies in health care that rely on methods like
contingent valuation to measure benefits from health care interventions. If this is the theoretical
basis for cost benefit analysis, it means the acceptance of Pareto optimality concept and its related
distributional implications. Individual utility is what is being maximised and individuals are
assumed to be the best judges of their own welfare.
Given the limitations of the welfarist approach, some have argued to rely on explicit welfare
functions to aggregate individuals preferences and explicitly address the issues of distribution, but
as Arrow demonstrated, it is impossible to aggregate individual preferences in a coherent way.

link their personal experiences to society and to a larger degree, historical forces. Sociological
imagination lets a person question behaviors and habits that seem ordinary. It is a human s ability
to think outside of the familiar habits people make in everyday life. Sociological imagination

The Negative Consequences Of Globalization And Culture
Globalization brings more negative consequences that outweighs its benefits. One area it has really
affected that gives me concern is culture . Globalization can be defined as the interaction and
integration amongst people, companies and governments of different nations. Its a process that it s
aided by international trade and investment and driven by information technology extracted from (
globalization101.org) Culture is the characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people,
encompassing language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts (published on livesience by:
zimmermann, July 12, 2017). Globalizationhas impacted so much negatively on culture. The section
of culture I believe globalization has affected most is the fashionindustry, language and the
character of people world wide. Nigeriawhere I come from is a developing country and we see
globalization as an opportunity for development. This has been one of the major mediums that
has earned globalization the lands of Nigeria to dominate and our culture to alter. In the early
centuries in Nigeria, women used to be known for wearing clothes that fully covered their body.
And any woman seen in a cloth that exposes any sensitive part of her body(shape, breast, lap)
was regarded as irresponsible and in most cases, regarded as a prostitute. Young boys were also
known for wearing trousers that weren t tight on them or sagging . This is no longer the case
since Nigeria embraced globalization. Today all over the streets of Nigeria, indecent dressing
has captured the hearts of our youths and even the elderly. Our young girls now wear mini
skirts, slacked blouse that exposes their breast, and also tight trousers all in the name of
civilization . And sadly enough even some married women Have adopted this pattern of
dressing. This has lead to so many divorce and rape cases in Nigeria. Now, most guys consider
sagging of their pants(trousers), wearing tight/ pencil trousers and earrings as fashion. These are
things that was regarded in the early centuries as signs of madness and a show of indiscipline.
Globalization has also impacted negatively on our language system. Our local dialects are no
longer spoken and regarded the way it was in

A virtuous circle. And BT will also use it to pay dividends to its shareholders and reward other
stakeholders [BT Report. 2017].
BT strategy is founded on broadening and deepening its customer relationships.
To deliver sustainable profitable revenue growth, BT needs stronger relationships with its
customers. That means making sure the company stay relevant to them as markets, lifestyles and
technologies change.
The three pillars of BT s strategy help the company to do that: delivering superior customer service;
transforming our costs; and investing for growth. The better our customer service, the more the
company sells and the less time and money is spend in putting things right. And the better the
company manages its costs, the better value for money BT can offer to its customers and the more
it invest in giving customers what they need today and tomorrow. These are the principles that
drive BT business model [BT Report. 2017].
For 2017/18 BT s strategy is evolving. The three pillars remain broadly the same but with a wider
focus on the overall customer experience rather than just on customer service. And with the
acquisition of EE limited, the company s investment areas are evolving to focus on having the best

Character Development In George Steinbeck s Of Mice And Men
Of Mice and Men was a gripping story that was filled with a great cast of characters. Each of
these characters played a major role in the development of the story and they were mainly either
flat or round characters. One such character in the novel that had a huge role was Lennie, who
possessed immense strength yet had the mind of a young child. The development of Lennie
helped advance the plot of Of Mice and Men because his actions caused him and George to get a
new job at the ranch, he constantly worried about his rabbits, and he killed Curley s wife which
ultimately brought upon his death. Lennie s characterdevelopment advances the plot of Of Mice
and Men because he caused George and him to get a new job at the ranch. This situation is
mainly shown in chapter 1 when George angrily says to Lennie Jus wanted to feel that girl s
dress jus wanted to pet it like it was a mouse Well, how the hell did she know you jus wanted to feel
her dress? She jerks back and you hold on like it was a mouse. She yells and we got to hide in a
irrigation ditch all day with guys lookin for us, and we got to sneak out in the dark and get outta
the country (Steinbeck, 1937, p. 11). This quote from the novel shows how Lennie is as a person,
where he doesn t understand other people s emotions well and acts very childish himself. The lady

The selection of the hardware is a very critical part of the hardware implementation of the

It includes a motor controller. The function of the motor controller is to convert the DC into AC.
Mechanically, these motors have simpler design than the other types of the DC motor as there is
no requirement of transferring power to the spinning rotor from the outside of the motor. The
position of the rotor is sensed by the control of a Hall Effect sensor or any other such device to
optimize torque and regulate speed. Advantages Advantages of the Brushless DC motor are their

design of the controllers for these types of the motors is a bit more complex and they have
relatively higher initial cost. These are the only disadvantages of the Brushless DC motor. 2.
Brushed DC motors: The generation of the torque in the brushed DC motors is coming directly
from the DC power. The internal commutation and the magnets that are stationary (magnets can be

for a brushed DC motor is relatively low compared to other DC motors. These are highly reliable
and have very simpler and basic type to control the motor. Disadvantages The major disadvantages
of this type of motor include a shorter life span

My Slave Narrative
When I was young I was a slave. It was a part of my life that I prefer not to flashback to because
of the horrors it brings me back to. One day, at our family reunion at the Chesapeake Bay my
great grandchildren, came up to me begging for stories. Since I had always been so private about
my past, I felt that it was a good time for my family to learn about my past life as a slave. Come

were both house servants. My heart stopped when first saw him and I thought he was the most
handsome man I had ever seen. On the outside, he was a strong, tough man, but on the inside, I
felt that he would be caring and sweet. Later that night, after I had finished my work we met again
in the cookhouse. Instantly, we fell for each other and our marriage ceremony was performed two
months later. What happened at your wedding? Ethel asked. Frank and I had a fairly traditional
slave ceremony. As house servants, we were about to have a formal wedding. For us, the black

Winesburg Ohio Essay On Light And Dark Imagery
The presence of light and dark imagery is a significant motif in the novel Winesburg, Ohio, vital to
the understanding of characters suppressed identities and the hidden beauty found within all of
their seemingly grotesque personas. Throughout the book, darkness is prevalent whenever a
character reveals a secret about themselves to George Willard or the reader, and characters regularly
walk around at night. Many of the most important experiences occur in the dark, and within these
moments, the characters appear their most extraordinary. The juxtaposition of lightand dark portrays
the contrast between the characters authentic identities and the pretenses they express to society.

For example, color imagery is used to describe the character Belle Carpenter in the story An
Awakening . Not only is she explained as having dark skin, but her thoughts are also black.
Anderson is implying that Belle has lost her innocence, and this idea is reflected when Belle
uses George to make [Ed Handby] suffer (Anderson 186). She does not care about George and is
simply using the boy to get what she wants, her lover, Ed Handby. She is also repeatedly
described as a woman throughout the story, suggesting that she is mature. With maturity comes a
loss of innocence, which is reflected in the description of Belle. Through Anderson s portrayal of
the woman, the reader gains a better understanding of who she is as a character, and what her
intentions may be throughout the entire story. Dark and light symbolism is important because the
reader learns more about the characters and their hidden thoughts, identities, and intentions based
on the colors Anderson uses to describe them.Lastly, the juxtaposition of light and dark is crucial
in understanding the difference between the characters false identities shaped by society and their
genuine ones. In Nobody Knows , for example, dark and light play a large role in George and his
secret. While in the dark, he decides to act on his

massacred in the Salem Witch Trials for believing in witchcraft; they, like some modern day
people, are persecuted and sometimes executed for their beliefs. Does the novel plagued with
adultery, thief, and execution depict the characters as evil? What defines evil? Evil is what is
morally wrong, sinful, or wicked. Danforth, Williams, and Parris are evil characters. Danforth is
morally wrong for executing John Proctor after being told Abigail is lying. Second, Abigail
Williams is wicked for condemning the 19 to their deaths to save her own reputation. Lastly,

Book Review The Indian Ideology by Perry Anderson is a collection of three essays originally
published in the London Review of Books. As the title suggests, The Indian Ideology through
critical engagement delves deep into the set of ideas (or nationalist discourse) that shape the Indian
nation democracy, multicultural unity and secularity and deals with conditions and events that
generated them, and which they both reflect and distort (p.2). For Anderson the idea of
India as one in its civilizational aspects of evolution and inherent unity is contested by the fact that

Among the Greek tragedies, there can probably be found something deeper and more elaborate,

He saved people from the deathly and truly intimidating allurement of the monster and solved its
riddle. This is what he is like at the beginning of the tragedy. He is described as the savior of
humanity from the dark forces of the Destiny, a hero of mind and will. The people believed that he
would conquer the monster and he himself believed in his own strength. The people considered him
a wise deity and he himself thinks so.
However, Oedipus is a human being and nothing more. The victory of mind and will over Sphinx
as a symbol of Destiny is temporary. Although, Sphinx ran away and left the people in peace, it
pierced the heart of the hero and would soon once again give him unsolvable riddles. This is the
core of the tragedy. Although Sphinx no longer exists, it is still inside the soul of its conqueror.

Another concern is the amount of space to answer some of the questions. While some areas do
give adequate space for answers, there are some that could benefit from having some more space.
One area that I feel could use more room would be the suicide assessment section. I would also
add more space to the section asking what the problems are that the client is seeking help for.
These are two areas that can formulate lengthy responses, and rather than limit what the client
reports, ample room should be provided to allow for them to fully express their needs.
F.I do not feel that this intake form needs to be reformatted, because the flow of the questions is
easy to read and understand. I feel that the form starts out informal, with the typical intake form
questions, and then leads into the questions that have more to deal with the mental health aspects
of an individual. I feel that the different sections do a nice job at leading into each other, and that it
gives the client a gradual accent into the more serious and in depth

Negative Effects Of Evictions
Eviction s Effects
Those who have experienced evictions are forced into multiple logistical housing situations. Due to
the stigma associated with a court ordered eviction, landlords would often engage in rent screenings
to ensure that potential renters not only have a clean criminal record but also an eviction free record
(Desmond, 2016). As Desmond discusses (2016), the landlord s double barrier screening is
shielding their neighborhood from criminality and poverty. Correspondingly, some landlords

Children who are exposed to these housing insecure households are susceptible to low birth
weights, asthma, depression, behavioral issues, and educational delays (BARHII, 2016). In
addition, physical health can include being exposed to sexual harassment. Tester (2008) reports that
some landlords aware of a tenant s economic status and need for housing used their positional
authority to sexually coerce tenants. Unfortunately, due to housing availability, Tester s (2008)
work described female renters precarious situation as women failed to report the sexual harassment
due to fear of retaliation and housing needs.
Households that undergo eviction are at a 20% higher level of material hardship (Desmond, 2016,
293). Those who have undergone an eviction have a 15% chance of being terminated by their
employer (Desmond, 2016, p. 293). This potential financial burden can be magnified on account
that many lose their possessions as a result of the eviction and risk having to re obtain clothing,
appliances, and other items. As Desmond (2016) explains, evicted families working on securing
habitable housing would be forced into paying for storage that ran around $100 dollars per month
(p.132). Sometimes people would fall behind in paying for their items and would result in the
evicted individual not just losing their home, transportation costs, sometimes their job, the storage

The Process Of Conflict Resolution
Introduction
The process of conflict transformation includes numerous types of practices and approaches. It is
crucial for a conflict resolution practitioner to be able to self assess the entire practice of
intervention to get a clear notion of why the approach that has been used was successful or caused
fail. Conflict interveners whose practices are well established on theories of conflict resolution and
ongoing researches need to refine their assumptions and skills through an extensive process of self
reflection. Such refining would help them to conceptualize a theoretical basis of their approaches
and intervention techniques. They would be able to understand what intervention technique is
appropriate for a situation, without trying out one tool after another. The process of self asses or
reflective practice in conflict resolution is beneficiary to predict and understand conflict resolution
approaches consequences and to evaluate the success or failure of an intervention. For a conflict
resolution practitioner theory is the foundation upon which the nature of both conflict assessment
and conflict intervention are more understandable. For example, in a mediation process mediators
sometimes prefer and sometimes don t prefer to use caucus technique as a way for a better conflict
transformation. Theoretical foundation of involving of a mediation technique would help avoid an
unfortunate end of the entire process. Hence, it is important for a conflict intervener to understand

Lab Report Of Pitot Tube
Introduction:
In most of the world planes, spaceships and helicopters have been tested in wind tunnel. The wind
tunnel is a chamber where the high speed air is passed through. The objective of this experiment is
to determine the velocity profile at a single location within the wind tunnel by using the Pitot tube.
Firstly, make plot of the non dimensional distance Versus non dimensional velocity to compare the
plot with White s Figure 7.5. Then Reynolds number, coefficient of drag, skin friction coefficient,
free stream velocity and boundary layer thickness should to be determined.
The experimental equipment which is used shown in the figure 1 below wind tunnel open end blow
type. Starting from the lift side of the figure position one is the fan. Then position 2 is the
Contraction Cone. The third position is the emergency stop. Four position is the test section. The
fifth position is the digital manometer which is used to calculate the Pitot tube position and the and
pressure difference of Pitot tube. The position 6 is Pitot tube. The last position 7 is the Chamber
Methodology:
The Pitot tube is a right angle tube with open end located in opposite to the fluid flow and its
used to measure the pressure. The Pitot tube is used in the wind tunnel and it has some holes at
the surface which is right angle to the wind and other hole facing the wind direction which lead to
rubber pipe as shown in the figure 2 below.

Herbert Hoover Contributions
Herbert Hoover is a debated figure in United States history. Hoover is often remembered only for
his unpopular presidency during the Great Depression. (Winkler, 21) Although this negative
stigma haunts his legacy, Herbert Hoover was a kind, tenderhearted and generous man who did
much good in his life before, during, and after his presidency. One of Hoover s greatest endeavors
was his generosity and effort in behalf of the Belgian Relief program. The article highlights this
event. Herbert Hooverwas raised as a member of The Quakers . This faith, instilled in him by his
parents, helped mold Herbert into the morally straight man he eventually became. His father
died from a heart ailment when Herbert was only six years old. Herbert therefore remembers his
mother as the more prominent of the two parents. His mother s name was Hulda Hoover. Hulda
Hoover was quite accomplished and was something of a free spirit. (Winkler, 23) She regularly
spoke at the Quaker meetings, something women did not have any place doing in the eyes of
most folks of the time. Doing this portrayed her belief in women s rights, for which she devoted
much of her life to fighting for. Although Hulda died early leaving Herbert an orphan at only nine,
there is no doubt that her example and teachings were seen and followed by her son.
Herbert then went to live with his aunt and uncle until he enrolled at Stanford University,
graduating with a degree in geology and meeting his future wife, Lou Henry. Hard

As a child I was lucky enough to have this experience with my family but I may not have had this

especially when they are only a week long and families spend thousands of dollars on them. That
would be a lot of extra money for families to come up with, especially families who aren t in the
higher low class or middle class and annual income per adult averages between $18,000 $30,000
per year. (Cliffsnotes) Not having those vacation experiences would be a huge loss and I wouldn t

Show me your friends, I ll show you your future . This quote is one of my favorite quotes of all

The Darkling Thrush
The Darkling Thrush Thomas Hardy [1840 1928]
Relevant Background
The poet Thomas Hardy was born near Dorchester in England.
He is also famous for writing novels.
Hardy gained a love of music from his father. Music is a prominent feature of The Darkling Thrush .
Hardy gained his interest in literature from his mother.
At the age of 22 Hardy moved to London and started to write poems. These early poems praised
country life. Yet Hardy didn t publish his poems until he was 58. He was 60 when he wrote this
poem.
Hardy wrote over 900 poems in his lifetime.
Hardy s poems are straight to the point and sometimes gloomy in outlook. In this poem he finds a
source of hope when a thrush suddenly starts to sing.
Hardy s most common theme is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the last stanza, Hardy claims the surrounding dark land provides little reason for this outburst of
joyful singing.
It reminds him of a carol. The song begins to sweeten his gloomy mood.
Hardy suddenly realises the song of the thrush in the falling darkness represents hope.
The poet is in a pleasantly sad mood as he leans alone on the gate watching the century fade into
darkness. But he clings on to the sad mood. He is addicted to it. The hopeful song of the bird
adds a new mood. Hardy becomes aware for the first time that evening of a new hope of things to
come.
He realises that there is a reason to hope, without knowing what that reason is. It is clear that the
thrush alone senses this hope and expresses it.
This is probably nature s way of reminding him that spring always follows winter. Or it may be a
spiritual message from nature. It is certainly uplifting.
Themes
Time
Hardy sets the poem at sunset on the last day of the nineteenth century. He compares the sun to a
weakening eye and this shows Hardy s regret at the fact that the day, year and century are ending
at once. Hardy feels like it may be the end of the world. He shows his sorrow at the ending of the
century by comparing the outline or silhouette of the land to a corpse, with the sky as the roof of
a tomb. The darkness and the lifeless appearance of nature depress Hardy. He seems to feel that
everything comes to an end: end of day, end of year, end of century and end of life. Time

Indonesian Demographic Transition Essay

The effects of population control programs on demographic change were not instant, and it takes
long serious effort to encourage the improvement of economic development in a country.
According to Paul J. Gertler (1994, p. 33), Population control is a key element in a country s ability
to maintain and improve its economic and social welfare . Furthermore, this paper intends to
explain why the change of population structure has an effect on the society s economic condition in
Indonesia with examining the demographic variables.

In general, Indonesia has been considered successful to reduce fertility and mortality rates. The
total fertility rate (TFR) in Indonesia decreased significantly from the average of 5.6 children per
female in 1971 to 4.6 in 1980, from about 3.3 in 1987 decreased to 3.02 in 1990 and continuously
dropped to 2.8 in 1994. From 1997 to 2002, according to Indonesia Demographic and Health survey

Meanwhile, the crude death rate in Indonesia in 1970 was 17, 7.9 in 1988, increased slightly to 9

My Operational Definition Of Social Justice
My operational definition of social justice (the distribution of advantage and disadvantage
within a society) is controversial to my social justice (LGBT Liberation) because they have a
disadvantage in today s society. It s controversial because people today are afraid to come out
because they re afraid of other people s reactions. Everyone in today s society depends on other
people s opinions. On what s right or what s the norm . Many people feel this is a lifestyle choice
not part of their make up. The Supreme Court ruling to allow same sex marriages is still not
widely accepts. The pressure of trying to express who you are can add stress and the stereotypes by
others can add an inability to have a career. The efforts of the LGBTare opening doors for people
to be themselves. Standing up for the LGBT rights is a form of social justice. One of these
advocate organizations is the National Youth Advocacy Coalition. Teenagers as well as adults are
faced with these injustices. My idea of social justice is giving the LGBT the same rights as all other
citizens and overcoming stereotypes.
Some of the groups against this social justice are religious groups and their leaders and right wing
political leaders (i.e. Tea Party). While many groups are outspoken against LGBT the biggest
problem is still with individual opinions. Many people still are afraid of what they don t understand.
The social justice issue I have chosen for my paper would be LGBT Liberation. I have

Why Do Glaciers
Mendenhall Glacier Report Paragraphs Suraj Bansal
Glaciers are a dynamic perennial accumulations of ice that, together with ice sheets, represent a
significant portion of Earth s water and a volatile element in the changing climate. Although sea
level rise is a significant consequence of glacial change, the instability poses numerous hazards,
though the impacts are not as widespread. Glaciers are continuously changing in response to
changes in temperature, intermittent precipitation levels and other geological processes. Glacier ice
crystals form slowly through the metamorphism of snow to firn crystalline, known as bubbly ice.

A glacier is a balancing act between snow buildup and loss. As the ice moves down the slope, it
passes a point where snowfall no longer accumulates, and it begins to waste. Over time the
glacier begins to end; either at some point on land where the mass of ice cannot move forward
any further, or into the water as a tidewater glacier. These glaciers generally lose a lot of their
mass by calving; chunks breaking off in the water. Although a small portion of the total surface
ice, glaciers hold a significant amount of water, and are particularly fragile with short term
climate changes when compared to ice sheets. Ice sheets are large, continuous heat sinks that
should take a while to feel any impact from rising annual temperatures however, ice sheets have
their own potential instabilities. Glaciers make up a fraction of the total ice mass and it is
divided up into a multitude of glaciers, so is going to react to changing temperatures on a shorter
time frame than the ice sheets. What s more, up to about 0.4 meters sea level equivalent of water

Mount of Olives. Jesus states, You will all fall away... for it is written: I will strike the shepherd,

because he is the shepard, in his time of need, all of his disciples will leave, especially Peter who
will disown him three times (Shreibman). However, Luke is very literal and anti semitic and
ignores or unknowingly misses this quote because he may think it is an insignificant detail. By

The newfound gospel challenges one of the most firmly rooted beliefs in Christian tradition. It
completely changes the understanding of God, the world, Christ not to mention of Judas himself

gospels have quotes that contradicts Jesus willingness to die, but there was also a lot of quotes
that supported this. Not to dissuade anybody who is Christian but every gospel can be accepted
while maintaining a degree of scepticism about it truth due to some inconsistencies. There are also
parts that may be consistent with the actual historical Jesus would have said. Reading the three
synoptic gospels have been enlightening. I have never read it before and found the whole story to
be interesting. What shocked me the most was the hidden Gospel of Judas which changed my
predisposed position that Judas was evil. I also wonder how do Christians feel about this new

Malcolm Gladwell And Dead Poets Society
Everyone has their own interpretation of the word success. Individuals might even have their own
personal explanation of how they came to be successful. However, these personal explanations are
usually incorrect. Malcolm Gladwell, Steve Jobs, and the film, Dead Poets Society have a mutual
understanding of success, making them interconnective. Although success can be interpreted in
various ways, success is attained through hidden advantages, extraordinary opportunities, and
significant intelligence.
Unfortunately, an individual s personal qualities does not explain how they became successful.
There are often hidden advantages acquired in a successful person. Certain aspects about an
individual s life can turn out to be an advantage. In the book Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell describes
the system of Canadian hockey leagues. The elegibility cutoff age for ameatur hockey leagues

  • 4. The Pros And Cons Of The DREAM Act About 400,000 illegal immigrants come to the United States each year, each one with their own story and reasons. These illegal immigrants often have sorrowful stories that make you want to sympathize with them, but these immigrants never think about how their presence affects the United States. On September 5th, President Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the end of the DACA program; they contended that undocumented immigrants took economic opportunities away from citizens and lawful permanent residents (DREAM). The DACA program was created in 2012 by President Obama and allowed illegal immigrants to stay in the United States. Recently, President Trump ended the program, but gave Congress a window to formulate a better plan... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many proponents of the DREAM Act argue that these kids were brought to the United States before they had a say in their life circumstances. Denying them hope and opportunity is punishment for an act beyond their control (Fitz). Supporters of the DREAM Act continually advertise this argument; They claim that the children are innocent, and the United States is treating these children unjustly, but not rewarding them with legal residence and expensive college tuition subsidies is simply withholding benefits to which they never had any entitlement in the first place (Mehlman). These children are innocent, and deserve to be given an opportunity to come to the United States and have a good education, but it should not be through the DREAM Act or illegal immigration. It is not un American to prioritize United States citizens, and other immigrants waiting to enter the country legally. A gross misconception is that DACA is only opposed by a radical few who want to hurt innocent children and families, but a recent Quinnipiac University poll shows that Americans across the political spectrum favor tougher enforcement of existing immigration laws over rolling out the amnesty welcome wagon. (Malkin). Despite this poll, many patrons of the DREAM Act think that continued amnesty is a right the United States is taking away, when in truth, the general public supports tougher immigration law. The DREAM literally goes against popular opinion, as it sponsors amnesty, and not harsher immigration ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Parkhurst Mrs. Patricia Loudermilt Earth/Environmental Science Honors Online 9 September 2016 The 1906 San Francisco Earthquake And Jack London s Reportings The earthquake on April 18, 1906, in San Francisco is considered one of the most important earthquakes ever. Ultimately, its main significance comes from the knowledge gained from it, not just the size of it. It was the first large natural disaster captured with photographs. The geologists of the time didn t know what could have caused such a large earthquake as plate tectonics wasn t a very popular theory back then. Studying the movement and crust near the fault, Reid developed a theory called Elastic Rebound theory, which is still used to this day to explain earthquakes (The Great 1906 San Francisco Earthquake). Foreshocks began at approximately 5:12 AM California time. Then, not half a minute later, the main earthquake occurred. The epicenter wasn t actually in San Francisco, but it was close. Most of the damage in San Francisco was caused by fire which burned the town for three consecutive days and nights. In areas along the fault line, most of the damage was caused by shaking. After the disaster occurred, the public had to obtain information on this earthquake from reports and photographs, which had to be sent all across the country. One of the most influential reporters was Jack London. His importance comes from his effectiveness in telling without pictures what was happening in San Francisco. One of ... The book says that women tend to develop breasts by the age of ten, as well as having the first menstrual period by the age of twelve and a half. While young men have their peak height spurt at age fourteen and can start growing facial hair by age sixteen (Hockenbury et.al, 2016). Another important part of the adolescent time period is social development. This is a time where the individual finds their identity and explores new opportunities. The strategy to take home with this new development is understanding that part of this stage will include peer relationships just as much as parental relationships. Also, keeping in mind that young adults will experiment with new relationships. The book says that parent adolescent relationships tend to be positive, as romantic and sexual relationships also become increasingly important throughout the adolescent year (Hockenbury et.al, 2016). • 10. The Importance Of Free Will Freedom is a very powerful word and it can mean so many different things for different people. Some people would say that free will is the most important thing we have, but what does free will really mean and how do we know that we are doing something because of our free will? Freedom lies in expressing your own determinism, not somebody elseВґs. It is not the determinism that makes a difference, but instead the ownership. If freedom is what we prefer, it is preferable to be determined by forces that originate in ourselves and not in others. This is a passage from Free Will written by Matt Ridley. According to this passage, determinism has a big impact on how our free will works. We cannot control our determinism since that is something nature... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ridley is discussing in this passage and throughout the entire text, the connection between free will, and determinism in a generic aspect and environmental aspect. But what does determinism mean? The belief that all events are caused by things that happened before them and that people have no real ability to make choices or control what happens (Merriam WebsterВґs LearnerВґs Dictionary). Understanding the meaning of determinism is vital to understand what Ridley wants to say in this text. When Ridley states that freedom lies in our own determinism and not somebody elseВґs, he means that every human being has its own determinism that is created from a genetic aspect and an environmental aspect. Our freedom lies in our unique determinism and what is created specifically for us. When we follow the determinism that has been creating within our self s, then we are truly acting from our own free will. As he states, it is not the determinism that makes a differences since determinism is already decided for us regardless of the decisions we make since those decisions has been made on the foundation of something that happened to us, that we might not even know affected us. If you want to look at it from the determinism in the genetic point of view it is the same rules that apply, even if we think we are making a decision based on our free will, it might be because of personality traits we inherited from our parents. I do agree with the points he is making in this passage. I really think he is going deep into this subject and exploring how we humans work. If I think about freedom and was asked to explain the word in one sentence I think I would say something similar to: Freedom is when we are allowed to act and think on our own without the pressure of any ... Activism is an umbrella term referring to the promoting or campaigning of policy or social change on the cultural, structural, or national level. Activism has been developed and practiced throughout history by people like Jesus Buddha, Thoreau, and Dr. Martin Luther King (MLK). Thanks to these people over the years activism has developed a clear and effective structure which has proven effective in history and a number of cultures. Understanding social justice is more than just knowing statistics, social justice requires one to identify with others stories, develop a sense of motivation, and knowing barriers one will face in one s journey. The next thing important to my own journey as a white male was understanding how oppression affects the motivation of an individual. To me, this meant breaking oppression down into non experiential and first hand experiences. Next was developing an activism cycle this meant learning how to recognize the need for change, joining an organization, taking action and following up by learning what one can do better in the future. Response To The Blank Page Kathrine Christy Professor Anne Vial Women in Literature 11 September 2015 Unit 1 Response: On Storytelling We all commonly assume that we act freely, that we make our own decisions without regard to the opinions of those around us. We all like to think we create our own stories, and choose the way we tell them. However, many of us are probably at least tempted to wonder if this a thing completely within our control, how much of it is, and how we can resist attempts of others to write our stories for us, regardless of what we actually desire. After all, garrulousness and gossip are still stereotypes almost exclusively attributed to women. Of course an anti woman society sees these qualities as bad things, rather than a means of shaping our reality and connecting to the people around us, of forming and maintaining communities. The Blank Page is another tale in which a woman tries to write her own story, despite the considerable pressures of royal life encroaching in upon her. Her blank page represents the willingness of many women to resist the attempts to tell or change their stories. Silence will speak says the old woman. Each of these characters played a major role in the development of the story and they were mainly either flat or round characters. The development of Lennie helped advance the plot of Of Mice and Men because his actions caused him and George to get a new job at the ranch, he constantly worried about his rabbits, and he killed Curley s wife which ultimately brought upon his death. Lennie s characterdevelopment advances the plot of Of Mice and Men because he caused George and him to get a new job at the ranch. This situation is mainly shown in chapter 1 when George angrily says to Lennie Jus wanted to feel that girl s dress jus wanted to pet it like it was a mouse Well, how the hell did she know you jus wanted to feel her dress? The Design Of The Hardware The selection of the hardware is a very critical part of the hardware implementation of the project; the selector must know the pros and cons on the design of each component that is being used. The selection can lead to the failure or success of the project. Therefore, special attention is required to the selection process and it was discussed with the specialist of the electrical and mechanical engineering fields to be on safe side. The main components of the system that are used in this project are as follows: 1.Motor 2.Microcontroller 3.LEDs 4.Sensor for Synchronizing 5.Power Supply 4.1 Motor The two major classifications of the motors are AC and DC motors. The function of the motor controller is to convert the DC into AC. Mechanically, these motors have simpler design than the other types of the DC motor as there is no requirement of transferring power to the spinning rotor from the outside of the motor. The position of the rotor is sensed by the control of a Hall Effect sensor or any other such device to optimize torque and regulate speed. Advantages Advantages of the Brushless DC motor are their long life, better efficiency, and high RPM with no maintenance required. Disadvantages The design of the controllers for these types of the motors is a bit more complex and they have relatively higher initial cost. These are the only disadvantages of the Brushless DC motor. 2. Brushed DC motors: The generation of the torque in the brushed DC motors is coming directly from the DC power. The internal commutation and the magnets that are stationary (magnets can be permanent or electromagnet) supply the power to the motor to generate the torque. These motors include carbon brushes to transfer the power to the rotating shaft. Advantages The cost required for a brushed DC motor is relatively low compared to other DC motors. These are highly reliable and have very simpler and basic type to control the motor. Disadvantages The major disadvantages of this type of motor include a shorter life span ... One day, at our family reunion at the Chesapeake Bay my great grandchildren, came up to me begging for stories. That s a great story, Ethel, one of my few fond memories as a slave. To start off, I met Frank in the cookhouse while I was gathering food to bring back to our master s house. He and I were both house servants. My heart stopped when first saw him and I thought he was the most handsome man I had ever seen. On the outside, he was a strong, tough man, but on the inside, I felt that he would be caring and sweet. Later that night, after I had finished my work we met again in the cookhouse. Instantly, we fell for each other and our marriage ceremony was performed two months later. What happened at your wedding? Ethel asked. Frank and I had a fairly traditional slave ceremony. She does not care about George and is simply using the boy to get what she wants, her lover, Ed Handby. She is also repeatedly described as a woman throughout the story, suggesting that she is mature. With maturity comes a loss of innocence, which is reflected in the description of Belle. Through Anderson s portrayal of the woman, the reader gains a better understanding of who she is as a character, and what her intentions may be throughout the entire story. Dark and light symbolism is important because the reader learns more about the characters and their hidden thoughts, identities, and intentions based on the colors Anderson uses to describe them.Lastly, the juxtaposition of light and dark is crucial in understanding the difference between the characters false identities shaped by society and their genuine ones. It is crucial for a conflict resolution practitioner to be able to self assess the entire practice of intervention to get a clear notion of why the approach that has been used was successful or caused fail. Conflict interveners whose practices are well established on theories of conflict resolution and ongoing researches need to refine their assumptions and skills through an extensive process of self reflection. Such refining would help them to conceptualize a theoretical basis of their approaches and intervention techniques. One of Hoover s greatest endeavors was his generosity and effort in behalf of the Belgian Relief program. The article highlights this event. Herbert Hooverwas raised as a member of The Quakers . • 51. My Operational Definition Of Social Justice My operational definition of social justice (the distribution of advantage and disadvantage within a society) is controversial to my social justice (LGBT Liberation) because they have a disadvantage in today s society. It s controversial because people today are afraid to come out because they re afraid of other people s reactions. Everyone in today s society depends on other people s opinions. On what s right or what s the norm . Many people feel this is a lifestyle choice not part of their make up. The Supreme Court ruling to allow same sex marriages is still not widely accepts. The pressure of trying to express who you are can add stress and the stereotypes by others can add an inability to have a career. The efforts of the LGBTare opening doors for people to be themselves. Standing up for the LGBT rights is a form of social justice. One of these advocate organizations is the National Youth Advocacy Coalition. Teenagers as well as adults are faced with these injustices. My idea of social justice is giving the LGBT the same rights as all other citizens and overcoming stereotypes. Some of the groups against this social justice are religious groups and their leaders and right wing political leaders (i.e. Tea Party). While many groups are outspoken against LGBT the biggest problem is still with individual opinions. Many people still are afraid of what they don t understand. The social justice issue I have chosen for my paper would be LGBT Liberation. I have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 52. Why Do Glaciers Mendenhall Glacier Report Paragraphs Suraj Bansal Glaciers are a dynamic perennial accumulations of ice that, together with ice sheets, represent a significant portion of Earth s water and a volatile element in the changing climate. Although sea level rise is a significant consequence of glacial change, the instability poses numerous hazards, though the impacts are not as widespread. Glaciers are continuously changing in response to changes in temperature, intermittent precipitation levels and other geological processes. Glacier ice crystals form slowly through the metamorphism of snow to firn crystalline, known as bubbly ice. Glaciologists recognize nine types of glaciers: continental ice sheets, ice caps, ice fields, piedmont glaciers, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A glacier is a balancing act between snow buildup and loss. As the ice moves down the slope, it passes a point where snowfall no longer accumulates, and it begins to waste. Over time the glacier begins to end; either at some point on land where the mass of ice cannot move forward any further, or into the water as a tidewater glacier. These glaciers generally lose a lot of their mass by calving; chunks breaking off in the water. Although a small portion of the total surface ice, glaciers hold a significant amount of water, and are particularly fragile with short term climate changes when compared to ice sheets. Ice sheets are large, continuous heat sinks that should take a while to feel any impact from rising annual temperatures however, ice sheets have their own potential instabilities. Glaciers make up a fraction of the total ice mass and it is divided up into a multitude of glaciers, so is going to react to changing temperatures on a shorter time frame than the ice sheets. What s more, up to about 0.4 meters sea level equivalent of water might be entering the oceans sooner than later, although the inventory of worldwide glaciers is limited so the exact amount of ice is not known. A change in the seasonal flux of water into the local environments is going to be felt by a good number of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 53. Quotes From Mount Of Olives Mount of Olives. Jesus states, You will all fall away... for it is written: I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of flock will be scattered. (Matthew 26:31 Mark 14:27). He refers to these lines because he is the shepard, in his time of need, all of his disciples will leave, especially Peter who will disown him three times (Shreibman). However, Luke is very literal and anti semitic and ignores or unknowingly misses this quote because he may think it is an insignificant detail. By saying these lines it is also praising Judas for his hard decision because he is only one. This gives the picture that Jesusdeath was volition, while in Luke it is more betrayal. Luke puts in Peter/Simon s denial but misses the most important part making... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The newfound gospel challenges one of the most firmly rooted beliefs in Christian tradition. It completely changes the understanding of God, the world, Christ not to mention of Judas himself and the other disciple. Judas is the only one who is able to make the ultimate sacrifice. All three gospels have quotes that contradicts Jesus willingness to die, but there was also a lot of quotes that supported this. Not to dissuade anybody who is Christian but every gospel can be accepted while maintaining a degree of scepticism about it truth due to some inconsistencies. There are also parts that may be consistent with the actual historical Jesus would have said. Reading the three synoptic gospels have been enlightening. I have never read it before and found the whole story to be interesting. What shocked me the most was the hidden Gospel of Judas which changed my predisposed position that Judas was evil. I also wonder how do Christians feel about this new ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 54. Malcolm Gladwell And Dead Poets Society Everyone has their own interpretation of the word success. Individuals might even have their own personal explanation of how they came to be successful. However, these personal explanations are usually incorrect. Malcolm Gladwell, Steve Jobs, and the film, Dead Poets Society have a mutual understanding of success, making them interconnective. Although success can be interpreted in various ways, success is attained through hidden advantages, extraordinary opportunities, and significant intelligence. Unfortunately, an individual s personal qualities does not explain how they became successful. There are often hidden advantages acquired in a successful person. Certain aspects about an individual s life can turn out to be an advantage. In the book Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell describes the system of Canadian hockey leagues. The elegibility cutoff age for ameatur hockey leagues is on January 1st. A mature scientist with an adult IQ of 130 is as likely to win a Nobel Prize as is one whose IQ is 180. In Dead Poets Society, the young men were very intelligent, making it easy for them to achieve high goals.
