In his essay On the Duty of Civil Disobedience , Thoreau expresses his discontent for the lack
American people s lack of action against the nation s injustice after his imprisonment for refusing
to pay a poll tax. He establishes his argument by first acknowledging that government will always
be flawed because it is a human institution and declaring that people should follow their
conscience rather than blindly follow any government. In the fourth paragraph, he explains his

pottery from the eighth and ninth centuries in addition to some lamps, it was evidence that after
the site had been abandoned it was resettled. Because of the discovery of Mameluke pottery, it
became apparent that the site was superceded during the Crusader period (Yeivin 1955, p. 123).

change as women became active participants in American society. For instance, women became

to societal problems. Male and female reformers banned together to argue that alcohol was immoral

became part of the progressive agenda that eventually led to the passage of the 18th amendment.

In the poem Thou Blind Man s Mark by Sir Philip Sidney, the speaker is struggling with his
desire for someone or something. They are fighting this feeling for control over his thoughts and
mind. It is shown that both the speaker and desire are constantly fighting, with neither fully able
to take control. This fact is evident through Sidney s use of violent diction, personification of
desire, and oxymorons. First, the diction of the poem is very violent. The words used are harsh
and show that the speaker is engaged in a war against his desire. For example, on line 14 it

The brand of education amongst slaves from the Great Awakening takes on several faces, some
prove to be profitable to the ideas spread by Whitefield while others prove to be detrimental to the
perception of educating slaves in Christianity that prevent the further expansion of evangelization to
slaves. Two portrayals of implementation of Awakening rhetoric are with the Bryan family,
southern planters in South Carolina, and Samuel Davies, a minister in Virginia. The Bryan family
had a connection with George Whitefield because they would provide assistance to evangelicals
and in particular with Whitefield s Bethesda orphanage in Georgia. They owned a plantation in
South Carolina that helped provide financial support for the orphanage and they were zealous about
the new wave of evangelicalismin the colonies and were seeking ways that they could implement
the new teachings into their lives. Jonathan Bryan began to seek reforms in the institution of slavery
in South Carolina by following the teachings of Whitefield. Their critiques of South Carolina were
that there was no time for slaves to convert to Christianity because they would generally work seven
