5. Dharma (Righteous Duty)

6. • Dharma is a fundamental concept in Indian philosophy,
emphasizing the righteous duty or moral obligation one
must fulfill.
• Example: In the epic Mahabharata, Arjuna faces a moral
dilemma on the battlefield. Lord Krishna imparts the
wisdom of dharma through the Bhagavad Gita,
highlighting the importance of fulfilling one's duty
selflessly.
• ભારતીય દશમનમાં ધમમ એ એો મૂળભૂત ખ્યાિ છે, જે ન્યાયી ફરજ અથવા
નૈહતો જવાબદારી પર ભાર મૂોે છે જે વ્યહિએ પૂણમ ોરવી જોઈએ.
• ઉદાિરણ: મિાોાવ્ય મિાભારતમાં, અજુમન યુદ્ધના મેદાનમાં નૈહતો
દુહવધાનો સામનો ોરે છે. ભગવાન ોૃષ્ણ ભગવદ ગીતા દ્વારા ધમમની શાણપણ
આપે છે, હનિઃસ્વાથમપણે પોતાની ફરજ હનભાવવાના મિત્વને પ્રોાહશત ોરે છે.

7. • The word 'Dharma' is used to mean justice (justice), what is right in a
given situation, moral values ​​of life, sacred duties of individuals,
virtuous conduct in every field of activity, helping other beings, etc.
• 'ધમમ' શબ્દનો અથમ ન્યાય (ન્યાય), આપેિ સંજોગોમાં શું યોગ્ય છે, જીવનના
નૈહતો મૂલ્યો, વ્યહિઓની પહવત્ર ફરજો, પ્રવૃહિના દરેો ક્ષેત્રમાં સદાચારી
આચરણ, અન્ય જીવોને મદદરૂપ થવું, વગેરે અથમમાં વપરાય છે.

8. • On being asked by Yudhistira to explain the meaning and scope of
DHARMA, Bhishma who had mastered the knowledge of Dharma
replied thus:
• ધમમની વ્યાખ્યા ોરવી સૌથી મુશ્ોેિ છે. ધમમને એવું સમજાવવામાં આવ્યું છે જે જીવોના ઉત્થાનમાં મદદ ોરે
છે. તેથી, જે જીવોના ોલ્યાણને સુહનહિત ોરે છે તે ચોક્કસ ધમમ છે. હવદ્વાન ઋહિઓએ જાિેર ોયુું છે ોે જે
ટોાવી રાખે છે તે ધમમ છે.

9. VALUES OF LIFE BASED ON DHARMA
ધમમ પર આધાહરત જીવનના મૂલ્યો
• language, religion or common aspirations etc., might constitute a basis for the formation of or bringing
into existence a Nation, the most essential of them are :-
• A common territory which people concerned have made their home and existence of filial attachment
between the territory and the people, and
• Common values of life evolved and cherished by the people.
• ભાિા, ધમમ અથવા સામાન્ય આોાંક્ષાઓ વગેરે જેવા હવહવધ પહરબળો રાષ્ટ્રની રચના અથવા અહસ્તત્વમાં િાવવા
માટેનો આધાર બની શોે છે, તેમાંથી સૌથી જરૂરી છે:-
1. એો સામાન્ય પ્રદેશ ોે જેને સંબંહધત િોોોએ પોતાનું ઘર બનાવ્યું છે અને પ્રદેશ અને િોોો વચ્ચે સમહપમત
જોડાણનું અહસ્તત્વ છે, અને
2. જીવનના સામાન્ય મૂલ્યોનો હવોાસ થયો અને િોોો દ્વારા આદરણીય.

10. Non-Violence (અહ િંસા):
• Ahimsa advocates for non-violence and compassion towards all
living beings.
• Example: Mahatma Gandhi, a key figure in India's struggle for
independence, adopted ahimsa as a guiding principle. His philosophy
of nonviolent resistance played a pivotal role in India's freedom
movement.
• અહિંસા તમામ જીવો પ્રત્યે અહિંસા અને ોરુણાની હિમાયત ોરે છે.
• ઉદા રણ : મિાત્મા ગાંધી, ભારતની સ્વતંત્રતાની િડતમાં મુખ્ય વ્યહિ,
અહિંસાને માગમદશમો હસદ્ધાંત તરીોે અપનાવી િતી. અહિંસો પ્રહતોારની
તેમની દશમનએ ભારતની સ્વતંત્રતા ચળવળમાં મુખ્ય ભૂહમોા ભજવી િતી.

12. સમાનતા
• ોોઈ પણ વ્યહિ ચહડયાતું (અજ્યેસ્તાસો) ોે ઊતરતું નથી (અોહનષ્ઠા). બધા
ભાઈઓ છે (ભ્રાતરાિ). સૌએ સૌના હિત માટે પ્રયત્ન ોરવો જોઈએ અને
સામૂહિો રીતે પ્રગહત ોરવી જોઈએ. (સૌભાગ્ય સમ વા વૃધુિુ ).
No one is superior (ajyestaso) or inferior (akanishtasa). All are brothers (ete
bhrataraha). All should strive for the interest of all and should progress collectively.
(sowbhagaya sam va vridhuhu).

13. GRATITUDE (Kritajnata)
• Cattle such as calves, bulls or cows, shall not be
slaughtered.
• વાછરડાં, બળદ ોે ગાય જેવાં પશુઓની ોતિ ન
ોરવી.
• યાજ્ઞવલ્ય સ્મૃહત (VI 234) એ પણ ગોવધ (ગાયની
િત્યા) ને ગુનો જાિેર ોયો. આ મૂલ્ય છે જેણે
ભારતના બંધારણના અનુચ્છેદ 48 માં તેનો માગમ
શોધી ોાઢ્યો છે, જે રાજ્ય માટે ગૌિત્યા પર
પ્રહતબંધ મૂોતો ોાયદો બનાવવાની ફરજ પાડે છે.

14. COMPASSION
• My desire (as the) highest Dharma is to wipe out the tears from the eyes of living
beings in distress.
• મારી ઈચ્છા (સવોચ્ચ ધમમ તરીોે) દુિઃખમાં રિેિા જીવોની આંખમાંથી આંસુ િૂછવાની છે.
12મી સદીના મિાન સુધારો બસવેશ્વરાએ જાિેર ોયુું િતું ોે "ોરુણા એ
ધમમનું મૂળ છે; ોરુણાથી વંહચત િોય તો ોોઈ ધમમ નથી".
Basaveshwara, the great 12th Century Reformer declared
"Compassion is the root of Dharma; bereft of compassion, there is
no Dharma".

15. TYAGA -SACRIFICE
• Sacrifice/subordinate, individual interest to that of the family.
Sacrifice/subordinate, family interest to that of the village Sacrifice/subordinate,
the interest of the village to that of the nation.
• Renounce all worldly interest if you want your soul to rest in peace.
• બહિદાન/ગૌણ, ોુટુંબના વ્યહિગત હિત. બહિદાન/અધીન, ગામનું ોુટુંબનું હિત
બહિદાન/ગૌન, ગામનું હિત રાષ્ટ્ર માટે.
• જો તમે ઈચ્છો છો ોે તમારા આત્માને શાંહત મળે તો તમામ સાંસાહરો રસનો ત્યાગ ોરો.
