Catch 22 takes place during the second half of WW2 and follows an Assyrian
soldier named Yossarian,who is stationed with his Air Force squadron on the Italian
island of Pianosa. Here he and his friends face the cruelty of War and the idiocracy of
their naive and overly ambitious superior officers. The squadron is constantly thrown
into combat merely with the mission to get cool photographs rather than to destroy
their targets. Through these inane missions their leaders also continuously raise the
number of missions each Airman is required to fly, meaning no one is ever sent
home. Yossarianexists with this sense of angst, as he feels no one realizes what is
going on around them; the war, the cruelty of their officers, etc.
Throughout the war Yossarian disregards the national causes for the war and takes it
personally. He feels as if he was thrust into this without his consent, and oftentimes
he tries to find a way out of the military. He hates being thrust into these absurd
circumstances where his friends die. Situations such as being bombed by his own
mess officer and his generals volunteering them for perilous missions to better their
reputation. Yossarian finds out that he can be discharged for being insane, but only
proves his sanity by claiming to be insane, as any sane person would claim insanity

Kenneth Branagh s Much Ado About Nothing is remarkably different in tone from
the other plays discussed. Unlike the other two comedies, Taming of the Shrew and
Merchant of Venice, there are far fewer comedic aspects that do not translate well to
modern audiences. The film has much less violence in it than the others and even its
chief villain is more like a cartoon villain than an outright evil manipulator.
The tragedies are known for their fascinatingly complex villains such as Richard
III or Iago, but Keanu Reeves Don John comes across as a character lost in the wrong
movie. He lurks in the shadows and is not really given a compelling motive for his
cruel actions. He does not even enact the rare few scenes of violence in the film. In a
different play, the ineffectual portrayal of the villain could ruin the whole production,
but Branagh understands that Much Ado About Nothing s most important parts are
the dynamics between the two sets of couples, something this film does quite well.
It is this toning down of violence and dark undertones that allows the film to be so
successful. Claudio s striking of Hero is the most noticeable physical violence and
it is quickly followed by a romantic scene between Beatrice and Benedick to restore
the tone. It comes across well as a modern romantic comedy, with just enough
darkness to drive the plot forward. To make the film darker than it has to be would
diminish how enjoyable and fun to watch it is.

As people grow up, there are special places that remain in the memories. These
places become a safe haven when life becomes too rough to handle. All the bad

novel Lost in Translation by Ewa Hoffman, she describes this paradise of sorts as her
hometown of Cracow, Poland.
Cracow, Poland is where Ewa spent the majority of her childhood up until age
fourteen when she emigrated to the Canada with her mother, father, and younger

The biggest battles in history is, has been, and always will be between good and
evil, but where does evil originate? Is it something inherited, or is it something
learned? Anthony Burgess attempts to answer this question in his dystopian
fiction, A Clockwork Orange. The novel, written during the Cold War, is a
reflection of Burgess s viewpoint on Communism and its overall impact on
society. Burgess was appalled at the degree to which the communist state
controlled people s lives (Galens). He felt that when a man cannot choose he ceases
to be a man (Burgess 63). Throughout the novel, Burgess tried to decide whether or
not it is better to be forced to be good or choose to be evil. A Clockwork Orange
shows that humans are inherently evil, but they have the potential to change as
demonstrated with diction, use of imagery, and character development.

educational philosophers have greatly shaped the reconstruction ideologies;

Brameld, Horton, and Freire. Theodore Brameld (1904 1987) is considered to be
the founder of the social reconstruction movement. The Brameld s ideas to
