What Are Gender Roles In Alice Munro s Axis
Alice Munro is an eminent Canadian essayist who has devoted her life to generating fiction, short
stories that deal with recurrent events among today s society. She is best known for being awarded a
Nobel Prize in Literature, the most prestigious award for a writer, in 2013. One of her popular short
stories titled, Axis, centers around the lives of two close, intelligent, University friends and the
progression of their lives. Although it seemed that both girls had a lot of good going for them, it
appears that the main goal for attending the university was to find man whom they could marry and
provide for them. Avie resorts to marriage with Hugo, a man whom she had yet to find love for, and
capitulated her studies to become a housewife. Grace, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One day during the summer, Grace invites her boyfriend Royce to her family s farm. They spend time
together and plan to have sex together for the first time. The narrator describes the roles of each
member of the family during a particular day and it clearly distinguishes the roles of the men from the
women. The role of Grace and her boyfriend one of the days was to make strawberry jam, but soon
after they changed. On the day that Grace and Royce had planned to have sex, the mother had to take
the children to a doctor s appointment, the father and brother, were going to work one of the the other
lands that they had across the highway and Royce was in charge of slightly remodeling the tall brick
house (Munro 10). The men were in charge of all the physical labor while the mother was in charge of
running errands with the children. In fact, the story also states that the father and brother relied on the
women who rented out the property to give them water. This exemplifies, the social norms the are
placed among both men and women. Within societies perspective, men are the breadwinners and the
ones in charge of handling any tough physical labor. On the other hand, the role of a woman generally
speaking is that of a housewife or a caregiver, sometimes being a schoolteacher. This is why mothers
are viewed as compassionate, understanding and loving. Fathers are supposed to be tough

Essay on Role of Women in Things Fall Apart
Role of Women in Things Fall Apart Chinua Achebe s Things Fall Apart gives us a vivid description
of the Igbo culture through the stories of Okonkwo and his village, Umuofia. In regards to Igbo
culture, contributions of women cannot be ignored. Although their position and status seems to be
underestimated by the people in the novel, women do play an important role in the Igbo culture in four
aspects: women take care of the children, do all the housework, serve as priestesses, and build
relationships with other villages. Women who are mothers take the responsibility to care for the
children. In tribal culture, women undertake the mission of educating the children through storytelling.
One example is Ezinma s mother, Ekwefi, who tells her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Such examples can be found anywhere in the novel. The author describes those scenes to show the
work that is done by women and their importance to the village. Besides housework in daily lives,
Okonkwo s wives also need to prepare some events. For example, the author writes Okonkwo s wives
had scrubbed the walls and the huts with red earth until they reflected light (p. 34). This example
shows how Okonkwo s wives get prepared for the Feast of the New Yam. The Feast of the New Yam
is the most important festival in the village, so the significance of women s work is shown by
preparing the festival. Hence, women play an critical role not only in daily lives, but also in village
events. Women like Chielo who are priestesses play an important role in the religious life. Chielo, the
priestess, is a spokesperson for one of the Igbo gods, Agbala. Achebe writes in the novel, But
Chielo...went on shouting that Agbala wanted to see his daughter (p. 90). In this example, Chielo is no
longer Ekwefi s friend whom she often talks with, but a spokesperson becomes possessed by Agbala.
A priestess is very powerful in Igbo culture. People regard the words through a priestess s mouth as
oracles. Therefore, God s spokesperson is actually the spiritual leader of the people who hold in awe
and veneration. No one can challenge Chielo s authority in front of their god. The novel describes
Okonkwo s failure to prevent his daughter Ezinma from

Humans Causing Decline in Biodiversity Essays
As far as we can say, intelligent, modern humans have been around for roughly 50,000 years, and in
that time have altered the earth beyond recognition (Morrison, 2006). Most evident in recent years, the
rapidity of technological advances both during and post the industrial revolution has been astonishing,
but has come with a hefty ecological price. There is wide scientific consensus that we are presently
witnessing the obsolescence of species on a prodigious scale. We are now having to accept the
possibility that humans might just be a contributing influence.
Predominantly we rely on one measure to compare the rate of species loss between various moments
in history. The background rate of extinction is approximately 1 extinction per ... Show more content

The Mascarene island of Mauritius national emblem remains to this day the dodo, despite the fact that
it is one of the most infamous cases of manmade extinction. Previously isolated from humans, the
largest member of the pigeon family possessed a curious and innocently trusting nature when sailors
first arrived on the island in the early 1600 s. Despite its flesh being absurdly tasteless, the dodo s
gullibility and lack of leggy zip (Bryson, 2003) proved an irresistible target for young seamen and
their pets. So blissfully ignorant was the raphus cucullatus that you had only to set one squawking and
all its friends from the immediate surroundings would rush to your side. Within seventy years of our
first meeting with the dodos the last one was dead, pointlessly hunted to extinction by humans and the
animals we introduced (Flannery Schouten, 2001).
Myriad methods exist through which we are directly and indirectly placing pressure on flora and
fauna. A growing global population puts more strain on the agriculture industry, triggering agrarian
and urban expansion. Land clearing reduces habitat size, while large environmental enterprises such as
the damming of rivers can either flood or dehydrate vast areas of terrain. Although not so common
nowadays, introduced species have in the past entirely missed their intended purpose, eventually
poisoning, killing or in the very least competing with native animals. Diseases and infections can also

Vedic And The Vedic Period
The Vedic period lasted from c. 1750 to 500 BCE. The Vedic texts were arranged when the Indo
Aryans started to inhabit the Ganges plain. With this new settlement, it transitioned to an agricultural
society, and in the need for organization the society created a hierarchical government. The society
had to include older habitants of the Ganges plain, and incorporated them under the Aryan varnas.
They also had to appoint political and religious authority to the Brahmins and Kshatriyas. The Vedas,
also called Śruti, center on the worship of the elements like fire and rivers, worship of heroic gods like
Indra, Varuna and Agni, chanting of hymns and performance of sacrifices. God Indra became the
central deity of the developing Old Indic culture. The philosophy of Vedanta transformed the Vedic
worldview to monistic one. This led to the development of tantric metaphysics and gave rise to new
forms of yoga, such as jnana yoga and bhankti yoga. People prayed for abundance of children, rain,
cattle (wealth), long life and an afterlife in the heavenly world of the ancestors. This mode of worship
has been preserved since then in Hinduism. However, the primacy of Vedic deities has been seconded
to the deities of Puranic literature. According to Muesse, some of the fundamental concepts like
karma, reincarnation and personal enlightenment and transformation did not exist in the Vedic
religion. Brahman is a very specific conception of the Absolute in Vedas. Brahman is neither

Biography of Marie and Pierre Curie Essay
After doing some research over Marie and Pierre Curie I was able to put together this paper. This
paper contains information about the life of Pierre and Marie Curie and their significance to physics
and science in general. Pierre and Marie Curie are best known for their pioneering work in the study
of radioactivity. The couple s work led to their discovery of the elements radium and polonium (Dick).
Pierre Curie was born on May 15, 1859. He was born in Paris, France. Pierre s parents were Eugene
Curie and Sophie Claire Depoully Curie. Pierre had one older brother, Jacques Curie. Eugene was a
scientist who gave up his dreams of a scientific career in order to support the needs of his family. It
was through his medical practice ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unsurprisingly, the two brothers began to experiment together. Their work led to the discovery of
piezoelectricity which is the electric polarization caused by compression or expansion of crystals in a
specific direction (Bailey). The brothers conducted more experiments to further study the new
phenomenon. They also learned that crystals are compressed when an electric field is applied.
Alternating currents could make the crystals vibrate at high ultrahigh frequencies. Today s sound
equipment is based in this phenomenon. The piezoelectric quartz balance was invented by Pierre and
Jacques. Their invention made the way for modern quartz watches and radio transmitters (Bailey).
Years later Pierre took up a new job at the School of Industrial Physics and Chemistry in Paris. When
Pierre first started teaching he wasn t much older than his students. He struggled to make new friends
due to his shy and reserved nature. However, after working closely with him, Pierre s students came to
admire and respect him (Bailey). Pierre pursued his own studies when he wasn t teaching. Within the
first couple of years of teaching he published two papers on crystallography. He didn t have his own
laboratory in which to work, and at the institution space and equipment was scarce. During his off
hours, Pierre would sometimes use students laboratories or set up his equipment in the hallway
(Bailey). Later,

Hiv-1 In Inhibitors Research Paper
The first notable findings in the development process of the successful HIV 1 IN inhibitor is
development of aryl β diketo acids. They provided the first proof of concept for HIV integrase
inhibitors as antiviral agents in the cell based assay. The aryl diketoacid containing compounds
(DKAs), exemplified by L 731988 are the most developed biological validated inhibitors. Indeed a
member of this class S 1360 was one of the first IN inhibitors to enter into clinical trials. [46, 47]
Although the diketo functionality, which is believed to chelate two magnesium ions [48], is an
intrinsic feature of the DKAs, it is not sufficient for activity. As typified by the above figure which

Initial structure activity relationship studies were conducted in order to improve the activity against
integrase, focusing in particular on the basic amine. This effort led to compounds such as morpholine
5 and tetrahydropyran 6, both showing low nanomolar activity in the enzymatic assay (5 IC50 =0.003
μM; 6 IC50 = 0.002 μM) and good potency in the antiviral cell based assays in low serum condition
(CIC95=0.250 μM 10% FBS). However, a large potency shift was observed in the presence of 50%
NHS for both analogues, which led us to explore other modifications. The simple acetamide derivative
7 showed a good potency in all assays and limited shift in high serum conditions. Various acetamide
replacements such as sulfonamide 8, urea 9, and sulfamide 10 were also prepared. While for all these
analogues the potency in the enzyme assay was in the nanomolar range (IC50= 0.007 0.018 μM), in
the antiviral cell based assays, the compounds showed a larger variability in the activity values,
ranging from 0.062 to 1.0 μM in low serum conditions. Only 7 retained activity below 1 μM in high
serum conditions (CIC95=0.4 and 0.5 μM 50% NHS for 7. [17] The amide functionality offered the

How Audiences Perceive Strong Female Characters,...
To test how audiences perceive strong female characters, Oppenheimer, Goodman, Adams‐Price,
Codling, and Coker (2003) ran a study where they had participants rate strong female characters on a
feminine to masculine scale, as well as attractiveness, sex appeal, relatability not a word, and humor
on a 7 point scale. The aim was to see how participants would respond to a female voice, if an
assertive actress would be characterized as masculine, and in general how female characters are
perceived by viewers. What they found was that women found the female characters to be slightly
stronger than men did, that the actresses were seen as slightly feminine do you mean they were found
to be slightly above the mean for femininity? Not sure what slightly feminine means, and that
attractiveness, sex appeal, and humor had no real impact on the perception of power. Also provide
more detail here were there weaker female characters that were also rated? Or those perceived as less
attractive? Knowing that women and men both consume and internalize representations and
stereotypes portrayed in media, it is important to then look at how women are being depicted and what
some causes behind this shift could be. Lauzen and Dozier (2005) investigated if popular films
continue to carry out the idea too vague use more precise language that men are powerful and
successful and women are submissive and not as successful by looking at an analysis of the top 88
domestic grossing films of 2002.

However, there are disadvantages of having a partnership structure for a business. The biggest
problem of a partnership is the decision making that is involved during a meeting. Most of the times,
partners disagrees with each other and will ultimately lead to arguments and personal conflict.
Additionally, when a partner makes a mistake and creates a problem for the business, each partner is
involved with all the debts and liabilities. This is a disadvantage for you and the partners because you
have to pay for a mistake a partner did and it could be at any value.

income if my business does become successful. From then on, I will be able to expand and become a

Literature Review On Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation
Literature Review
Introduction
Every day, men and women suffer from a stroke, when the arteries that bring blood to the brain are
clogged, essentially suffocating the brain. This then damages the brain, leaving the victim unable to
walk or speak properly. Oftentimes, these stroke patients can become hemiparetic, meaning that part
of their brain was damaged, and half of their body became disabled or unusable. However,
neuroscientists and physical therapists have developed a way to train the gait of these hemiparetic
stroke patients, allowing them to walk properly again, using Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation(Cha,
2013, Habib, 2009, McIntosh, 2010, Schneider, Suh, Thaut, 2010). As brain plasticity is damaged
severely during stroke, therapists must consider increasing the plasticity of the brain using repetition,
which RAS utilizes(Cesqui, 2017, Gloag, 1985, Habib, 2009, McIntosh, 2010,Särkämö, 2008,
Schneider, 2010, Suh). Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation utilizes repetitive rhythms in order to develop
specific connections between the auditory and motor functions (Cha, 2013, Habib, 2009, McIntosh,
2010, Schneider, Suh, Thaut, 2010). The direct links between the auditory and motor functions
become critical in RAS, as the stimulation of the auditory functions directly benefit the motor areas of
the brain throughout RAS, benefiting gait in hemiparetic stroke patients (Cha, 2013, Gloag,
1985,Habib, 2009, McIntosh, 2010, Morris, 2009, Särkämö, 2008, Schneider, 2010, Suh, Thaut,

Charles W. Chestnutt s The Marrow of Tradition Essay
Charles W. Chestnutt s The Marrow of Tradition
Clearly, one can expect differing critical views of a novel; from the
author s perspective we see one view, from a publisher s another, and from
the reviewer s yet another. This is especially true of Charles W.
Chesnutt s The Marrow of Tradition. If one observes both the contemporary
reviews of the novel and letters exchanged between Chesnutt and his
friends and publisher, Houghton, Mifflin, and Co., one will see the
disparity in opinions regarding the work. Chesnutt himself felt the work
was of at least good quality, and remarked often of its significant
purpose in letters to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Reflecting upon the title of this essay, The American People Are Too
Sensible to Waste Their Time Upon Such Silly Rot, taken from the review of
The Marrow of Tradition by Katherine Glover, it is interesting to note
that the novel did receive a certain amount of public success. Chesnutt
revealed the popularity of the novel to daughter Ethel in October of its
publication year (prior to the reviews cited here). The line from Glover s
review is obviously a mean spirited attack by a racist reviewer, and is
ultimately ironic in that it did not accurately depict the sentiments of
the reading public. And in a series of letters to Booker T. Washington
Chesnutt expresses his belief that the novel has helped him to arrive as
a popular novelist. He also notes the probable popularity of the novel in
a letter to his publisher in November 1901.
All of the reviews presented here, and Chesnutt s own letters, bring to
light the sometimes apparent gap between what is achieved in the realm of
quality and what is achieved in purpose. Clearly, with few exceptions,
The Marrow of Tradition was perceived as a purpose novel, one which
proposed to uncover the

Logic
Spinoza s Argument for Substance Monism and Common Objections Spinoza s Ethics is widely
thought of as Spinoza s greatest work. One noteworthy claim that he makes in his Ethics is his
argument for substance monism, or the existence of only one substance. In Proposition 14, Part I of
his Ethics, Spinoza states that There can be, or be conceived, no other substance but God. This
statement amounts to saying that everything else in this world, whether it is extended or not, is a mere
image of God. Spinoza s proof for this comes in three steps. One, assume that no two substances can
share an attribute. Two, assume that there exists a substance that contains infinite attributes. Three, by
these two assumptions, another substance cannot exist ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, even if we could distinguish between two different affections, it would not necessarily say
anything about the substances in themselves. Thus, we cannot distinguish between substances just by
their affections. Thus, substances can only be distinguished by attributes, in which case no two
substances can share an attribute. The second assumption Spinoza makes in proving substance
monism is that God exists. Spinoza gives many proofs for this, I will only give one. It is given that for
every thing there must be a cause or reason for its existence or non existence. It is also given that this
reason must be inside, or outside the thing being considered. Suppose God does not exist. The reason
for this must be inside or outside God. First, if the reason is inside God, it goes against our definition
of God as a substance because substances necessarily exist (Proposition 7.) Thus the reason is not
inside God. Second, if the reason exists outside God, then we would be implying that a thing outside
of God exists that is causing God s non existence. This thing that explains God then necessarily has
the same nature as God because if not, it could not be the cause of God (Proposition 3.) But if it does
have the same nature, we would consequently be claiming that God exists because this thing outside
of god will identical to God. Thus, no matter where the reason for God s non existence lies, we cannot
prove that God does not exist, and therefore God must exist.

Media And Identity Essay
With the rise of media within the past few decades, media gained the power to shape society.
Everyday, millions and millions of people engage in some sort of media; they spend their time texting,
calling, or just browsing the internet looking up information, but mostly they utilize it for
entertainment. Media plays an important role in how everyone lives their daily lives, as they share
information that their audiences might relate to. A wide variety of audiences are consciously and
subconsciously influenced by whatever the media claims. As media only shows what they believe
their audience wants to hear and see, many become naive. Alongside the power that comes with
media, many people eventually turn to slaves to media. They blindly follow and believe what the
media says; it unknowingly forces them to remain ignorant. Consequently, the media can be a
distressing influence to individuals. Young individuals, who are still in the delicate stages of forming
their identity, identifying their wants and goals are easy targets for the media. Trapped in cyberspace,
they are constantly bombarded with information, which the majority of individuals do not take
advantage of. The media can act as a resource that young people may exploit as a guide to follow.
However, if they are exposed to the detrimental side of media, it will become a challenge for them to
figure out their true personal identity. The media tell what we should buy, who we should be, or who
we should become... which

Comparing The Creation Stories Of Ancient Israelite Views...
Compare and contrast the creation stories in Enuma Elish and in Genesis. In particular, assess what
this comparative work tells us about ancient Israelite views of God and God s creative work.
Genesis 1, the first chapter in the bible, is easily the most well known creation story to come out of the
Ancient Near East. However, that does not mean that it was the only creation story to come out of that
period. The Babylonian epic, the Enuma Elish was one such story. It is in essence a history of the
Babylonian gods, and in particular, one god, Marduk. It was ultimately written to justify his rise to
power as the head of the Babylonian pantheon of gods. This was done in order to support Babylon s
claim to pre eminence above all the other cities in the country (Heidel 1963, p. 14). Despite emerging
from the same period, the two texts are starkly different. The former portrays an all powerful,
transcendent, monotheistic God, while the latter describes a polytheistic hierarchy of gods who reach
their ends through violence and conflict. The differences between the Enuma Elish and Genesis 1 are
so vast and endless that there is no real reason to discuss about their literary dependence or
mythological similarities (EOR, p. 2811). Rather, the Enuma Elish is better enlisted as a tool of
comparison in order to highlight the utterly different and radical nature of the ancient Israelite religion
as compared to the common religious beliefs circulating the Near East. While there are

A Research Study On Conduct Disorders
Conduct Disorders (CD) very greatly in their severity and development. CDs are best explained as
multifaceted in origin and transactional over time. Some children develop signs seemingly from birth,
while others have CDs that develop later on or out of Oppositional Defiant Disorders. The etiology of
CDs continues to evolve as more research has resulted in additional understandings. The known
causes of the disorder include: Genetic Influences, Prenatal Factors and Birth Complications,
Neurobiological Factors, Social Cognitive Factors, Family Factors, Societal Factors, and Cultural
Factors. (Mash, 2015) Genetic links to CD have been found in twin studies, where 50% of antisocial
behavior derives from heredity origin. Externalizing behavior such as in CD are likely passed
genetically from parents. The genetic risk for antisocial behavior is significant in multiple ways.
(Mash, 2015) Firstly, it is noteworthy that insensitivity, impulsivity and temperament were found to be
hereditary. (Waldman, 2011) CDs are strongly correlated with parental conditions: for Fathers it is
antisocial personality disorder and for Mothers it is depressive disorders. Secondly, genetic makeup of
a child contributes to the causes of CDs including their neurobiology and genotype. (Ellis, 2011;
Zohsel, 2014) The BAS (Behavioral Activation System) and BIS (Behavioral Inhibition System) are
subsystems of the brain, which when imbalanced, relate to behavioral patterns. Children with CDs

Dangers Of Stereotyping
Dangers Of Stereotyping Emergency!!!! Danger is near!! Dangers of stereotyping to be exact. There
are 3 topics for my reasoning as stereotyping is a dangerous social bias. The three topics that are going
to be used are things fall apart, aria memoirs of a bilingual child, and the theme for English B. These
topics will show my argument about stereotyping. The first topic that is going to be shown is things

anything. For example: Umofia was feared by all its neighbors it was powerful in war in magic its

An Interview With Police Enforcement
The number one career that I want to pursue is in law enforcement. Unfortunately, it did not show up
on my list of occupations produced by my Self Directed Search results. My number one goal is to
obtain a career as a Deputy Officer and then work myself up to detective. Since working in law
enforcement is my number one goal I decided to interview two different Sheriff Deputy Officers. The
first Sheriff Deputy Officer that I interviewed was Deputy Benzor from the Los Angeles Sheriff

occurred while I was doing a patrol ride along. This was probably the best time to conduct an informal

The Battle Of Siege Of Yorktown
September 5th, 1781, a French Naval Fleet inhabited the lower Chesapeake Bay, which was a major
advantage to the continental army. The siege of Yorktown, was the last major battle against the British
army under General Cornwallis, resulting in the inevitable surrender and American independence.
There was a great deal of coordination prior to the actual engagement consequently leading to this
outcome. The total number of soldiers consisted of 17,600 American and French soldiers, under the
command of General George Washington, Marquis de Lafayette, Comte de Rochambeau, and Rear
Admiral Francois Joseph Paul, the Comte de Grasse lead a French Naval Fleet. 8,300 British forces
were commanded by General Charles Earl Cornwallis with 7,000 additional forces sent from General
Sir Henry Clinton in New York. Unfortunately for the British, the reinforcements arrived too late.
According to General Cornwallis, the British failed their mission as a result of lack of reinforcements
from Clinton. Middleton stated (2013), However, it is wrong to blame Clinton alone for Yorktown
(p.387). Various factors led to the defeat of both British Generals. The lack of communications and
insubordination of authority caused their defeat. This was the truth for the battle of Yorktown. At the
time of the American Revolution, both American rebels and the British practiced a variety of methods
for keeping written communications secret. Both sides had a networks of spies who passed on

The Effects Of Visual Merchandising And How Do They Affect...
Research methods are the various procedures, schemes and algorithms used in research (Rajasekar,
2013), whereas, methodology refers to philosophy that shape the diversity of the entire body of
knowledge (McGregor and Murnane). This proposal outlines the methodology and structure that will
be used to answer the research question, what are the effects of visual merchandising and how do they
affect consumer purchase behavior in UK s food retail industry, particularly in, high end supermarket,
Sainsbury s Plc.
Research Philosophy
For many centuries, philosophers have been debating about the relationship between data and theory.
It is important to understand the main philosophical choices underlying the management research.
This is because; firstly, it can help to clarify research design, that is, what kind of evidence is gathered
from where and how such evidence is interpreted in order to provide good answers to the research
question. Secondly, research philosophy helps the research to recognize which designs will work and
which will not. Finally, it can help the researcher to adapt research design according to the constraints
of different subject or knowledge structures (Easterby et al. 1991). A research project is considered to
the power when it clearly outlines the epistemology study of knowledge and what we accept as being
valid knowledge, or philosophical basis, known as a research paradigm (O Gorman and MacIntosh
2014). A paradigm is a set of assumptions, concepts,

Theories And Evidence On Face Recognition
Do new borns have the ability to detect faces? Discuss with reference to theories and evidence on face
recognition in infancy .
In order to understand reality, a series of processes and interpretations are necessary to make sense of
the world to any individual. Not only interpretation but also the arrangement of information received
from our senses is a must to create inside representations of the external world.
This essay seeks to explore if new borns can detect faces, pointing out theory s strengths and
weaknesses, consequently discussing previous research in order to expose evidence of babies face s
recognition abilities. This said, according to Macknik and Martinez Conde (2014), Most of what we
see is a confabulation of our brain: it makes stuff up based on the sparse data it gets from our eyes .
In other words, individuals do not perceive reality but in what manner their brain understands it.
In the early 1900s, Gestalt psychologists (such as Wertheimer), tried to explain the ideologies behind
the understanding of sensations received in a sensory manner (Gross, 2015). Their main argument was
that every individual is born able to perceive the world in specific ways, with no or little learning; that
to make sense of reality, individuals had to perceive objects as being separated from other stimuli
(seen as a whole) and once a differentiation between the figure and the ground was made, it then
became possible to organise the

The Etiology Of The Disorder Essay
Describe the etiology of the disorder. Bipolar Disorders are considered complex because of the
episodes that are experienced. They include dysfunctional mood, potentially including major
depressive episodes, mild to moderate depressive episodes, manic episodes, hypomanic episodes, and
mixed episodes, which are often separated by periods of relatively normal mood. (BDII). There are
two types of Bipolar Disorders that I will cover in this paper. They include Bipolar I disorder (BP I)
and Bipolar II disorder (BD II).According to the Epidemiologic Catchment Area Study, as cited by
Kleinman, Lowin, Flood, Gandhi, Edgell, and Revicki (2003), the lifetime prevalence by race and
ethnicity for BD I and BD II, are as follows: Caucasian 0.8% and 0.4%, African American 1.0% and
0.6%, and Hispanic 0.7% and 0.5%.. Lifetime prevalence rate for Bipolar I is 0.6%and bipolar II it is
0.3% over a 12 month period (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). People who have Bipolar I
disorder typically experience alternating episodes of depression and mania where there is a separation
of some level of normalcy in the sequence (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). For example,
they might be depressed for 4 days feel normal for a couple of days than go into a manic episode. On
the other hand, those with Bipolar II disorder they only experience depressive episodes and will not
have an episode of mania. Describe the diagnostic features of the disorder. Describe the differential

Character Analysis Of Mae Holland In The Circle
Mae Holland is an ambitious, intelligent young woman and the main character in Dave Eggers novel
The Circle. Although her character is paramount to telling the novel s main story (detailing the
prominence of the monopolistic, power hungry tech company known as The Circle ), she is hardly a
protagonist, with her being ill informed at best at the book s beginning, and complicit in the Circle s
nefarious doings by the novel s conclusion. Mae is an exceptionally bland character who offers little
interesting internal dialogue and who s only notable overarching character trait is her ever present
insecurity and her need to please others. Arguably, it could be said that Mae truly is not the main
character of The Circle at all; Rather The Circle company itself, or more precisely Mae s relationship
with the The Circle (and by association its dystopian philosophies) are what take center stage. As a
character, Mae is malleable; a clean slate waiting to take orders and eager to agree with her superiors,
she yearns for attention from others, is figuratively trapped inside The Circle s elaborate campus, and
acts as a mouthpiece for the The Circle s leaders; repeating whatever they want her to say. Due to the
fact that Mae Holland possess these characteristics, she is comparable to a parrot.
The same way a parrot enters its cage with a blank mind, devoid of any calls or phrases, Mae
approaches her job at The Circle with an open mind, not influenced by any previous work experiences.
When thinking of the occupation she previously held prior to working at The Circle, Mae expresses
extreme discontent. Her final day at the public utility in her hometown had been only three weeks ago
they d been stupefied when she gave notice but it already seemed impossible that she wasted so much
of her life there. Good riddance, Mae thought, to that gulag and all it represented (pg 4). The passage
above indicates that Mae loathed her previous job, considering it a waist of her life and likening it to a
gulag . This shows that Mae felt little passion or allegiance to her old job, and thus approaches her
new job at The Circle with a blank mind, not considering her previous experiences valuable to her in
any way.

Research Paper On Phobia
INTRODUCTION
Everyone is afraid of something. These fears are all normal; lots of other people feel the same way
that you do. What do you fear more than anything else? Everyone is afraid of something like spiders
or heights, these fears are all normal. People who have a specific powerful fear suffer from a phobia. A
phobia is an intense fear of a specific object, situation, or activity. Mental health professionals have
identified hundreds of phobias. No one is certain what causes a phobia. People can sometimes manage
and even overcome them on their own. In other cases, they need to seek professional treatment to deal
with their phobias. This research includes the definition of phobia; also it will describe the common
types of phobia, it causes and signs.
Definition of phobia:

Manual Transmissions Should Not Die Off
Since the beginning of mass vehicle production, manual transmissions were the only way of shifting
gears in a car. It was not until 1940 when General Motors and Oldsmobile introduced their automatic
transmission called the Hydra Matic. This was the world s first taste of an automatic transmission.
Since then, automatic transmissions in cars have become exponentially popular to the point where cars
with manual transmissions only account for 6.5% of all of the cars in the U.S. On an episode of the
YouTube show, Fast Lane Daily, a 6 year old posted the question asking would manual transmissions
have died off by the time he was able to drive. This question really moved the crew of the show
because there is a chance that in 10 or so years, manual transmissions could be a thing of the past.
Manual transmissions should not die off because it created a better driving experience for enthusiasts,
it is less appealing to thieves, and it makes the driver less prone to distractions while driving.
The Manual transmission should not die off because it offers a different driving experience from the

Positive Carpe Diem
Robert Herrick uses positive carpe diem arguments, in complement with negative and manipulative
threats to attain sexual favors from his female characters. In Herrick s poem To the Virgins, to Make
Much of Time , Herrick blatantly objectifies women as having only a sexual value, immediately in the
poem; specifically that females are more valuable sexually while they are younger, and by extent more
attractive in his eyes. This is assumed throughout the poem, and especially is embodied in his first
stanza of the poem, when he states Gather ye rosebuds while ye may, Old time is still a flying! The
author does this specifically in the usage of the phrase old time. The usage of old time is not
positioned to state that time has always ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Herrick writes That age is best which is the first, When youth and blood are warmer. Herrick is using a
more puissant theory to aid in transitioning from an ephemeral lifespan, into a technique in which he
appeals to the reader s own desires. While one s youth and blood are warmer is Herrick s way of
saying at a young age you may feel romantic desires at a high concentration. This however would not
provide enough evidence to favor his position if he did not immediately follow it with a more sexually
concerned notion. Herrick follows the text quoted above with the following in the same stanza. But
being spent, the worse, and worst times still succeed the former. This is another form to demonize
aging, and bring the time aspect of the carpe diem aspect back into the argument. At a young age, the
reader best best in terms of emotional reward, which then becomes worse and worst as the individual
ages. The last stanza brings the second fraction of a metaphysical carpe diem poem into conclusion.
The final stanza states Then be not coy, but use your time, And, while ye may, go marry: For having
lost but once your prime, You may forever tarry. This call to action asks that the young woman who
reads this poem relieve herself of coy mannerisms and embrace a more liberal approach to

Femininity In Tank Girl
An interesting depiction of femininity is in Jamie Hewlett s 1988 Tank Girl, where Rebecca Buck, or

typical comic book girlish look, which are usually long hair and a curvy figure. Tank Girl instead
wears outfits that are chaotic with wacky colors and symbols, all while brandishing weapons and
having a sly smile. This combination of femininity with a masculine streak where she flaunts her body

The Gilded Six Bits
When many aspects of a woman life are controlled for her and she can no longer make decisions for
herself, she becomes a slave to her oppressor. Throughout the class, the theme of women being
controlled by other oppressing forces, can be seen in many texts. Women have their decisions made
for them in terms of their, food intake, appearances, and lifestyle choices. These ideas are seen in
Beyond the Lights, where Noni s mother Macy both what Noni eats as well as how she looks. Again in
The Gilded Six Bits, Missie May s hunger and food intake are controlled and judged by Joe, who
believes because he is a working man, his hunger is more important. In Color Stories: Black Women
and Colorism in the 21st Century, society controls women s appearances by pressuring them to look a
certain way to be considered beautiful. In both Not That Kind of Girl and Borderlands: La Frontera,
women s decisions about their bodies in a sexual manner are controlled by the pressures of men.
Oppressing forces play such a strong role in so many of the texts covered in class this semester, it
makes one wonder if this oppression and forceful control is an accurate representation of our society
today. A woman s figure and weight can be a major cause of stress. Society already places such strong
pressure on women to have a certain body type that women do not need additional pressures about
watching what they eat. The idea of women s food intake being controlled by other people is a
prominent theme in

Analysis Of Elizabeth Barrett Browning s The Battle Of...
Elizabeth Barrett Browning was born on March 6, 1806, at Coxhoe Hall, Durham, England, daughter
Mary Graham and Edward Moulton Barrett. They made their wealth from a Jamaican sugar plantation.
Elizabeth was the oldest of eleven siblings. She was educated at home which leads her to write at a
very young age. By the age of fourteen her very first book was published, The Battle of Marathon,
which her father released privately. Browning had many of her works published but in eighteen forty
four her collection titled Poems was published. These poems caught the attention of English poet
Robert Browning. Robert wrote to Elizabeth a letter, they both exchanged numerous letters over the
following months, this lead to their elopement in eighteen forty six. On eighteen fifty, she released
Sonnets from the Portuguese, it is a collection of forty four love sonnets that became one of the
greatest sequences of sonnets in history. The collection was dedicated to her loving husband and was
also written in secret during their courtship. Aurora Leigh was published in eighteen fifty six, this was
her longest work, this was a blank verse novel and poem. Elizabeth Barrett Browning died on June
twenty nine, eighteen sixty one in Florence at the age of fifty five. This essay will reveal the theme of
feminism through the exploration of key forms of Browning, which include: the inner battle resulting
from the conflict to choose between female identity and a skillful author, the connection made

Compare And Contrast The Whiskey Rebellion And Shays...
Sarah Chung 10/03/17
APUSH Section 3
1. Compare and contrast the Whiskey rebellion to Shays rebellion. How would the differing results
inform a historian of the power of the Federal Government in comparison to the Articles of
Confederation and the Constitution? (page 187).
Shays Rebellion began because of the economic depression, insufficient harvests, and high duties,
lead to farmers being seized and thrown in jail if they were unable to pay their taxes. This angered a
large group in Massachusetts and a man named Daniel Shay, a Revolutionary war veteran, to arrange
protests against the government. The Whiskey rebellion was triggered when George Washington s
government placed a tax on distilled alcohol and whiskey. Protesters showed their discontent by
tarring and feathering revenue officers, similar to those during the anti stamp act days. Although both
rebellions were challenging the government, Shay s Rebellion revealed the weaknesses of the Articles
of Confederation as the national government could not tax, enforce laws or raise money for an army.
Already weakened by the Revolutionary War, the Articles of Confederation could not defend against
the rebellion. Unlike the outcome of Shays rebellion, George Washington lead an army of militia to
immediately put down the rebellion which lead to his government being strengthened and gaining
respect. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

  • 2. What Are Gender Roles In Alice Munro s Axis Alice Munro is an eminent Canadian essayist who has devoted her life to generating fiction, short stories that deal with recurrent events among today s society. She is best known for being awarded a Nobel Prize in Literature, the most prestigious award for a writer, in 2013. One of her popular short stories titled, Axis, centers around the lives of two close, intelligent, University friends and the progression of their lives. Although it seemed that both girls had a lot of good going for them, it appears that the main goal for attending the university was to find man whom they could marry and provide for them. Avie resorts to marriage with Hugo, a man whom she had yet to find love for, and capitulated her studies to become a housewife. Grace, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One day during the summer, Grace invites her boyfriend Royce to her family s farm. They spend time together and plan to have sex together for the first time. The narrator describes the roles of each member of the family during a particular day and it clearly distinguishes the roles of the men from the women. The role of Grace and her boyfriend one of the days was to make strawberry jam, but soon after they changed. On the day that Grace and Royce had planned to have sex, the mother had to take the children to a doctor s appointment, the father and brother, were going to work one of the the other lands that they had across the highway and Royce was in charge of slightly remodeling the tall brick house (Munro 10). The men were in charge of all the physical labor while the mother was in charge of running errands with the children. In fact, the story also states that the father and brother relied on the women who rented out the property to give them water. This exemplifies, the social norms the are placed among both men and women. Within societies perspective, men are the breadwinners and the ones in charge of handling any tough physical labor. • 3. Essay on Role of Women in Things Fall Apart Role of Women in Things Fall Apart Chinua Achebe s Things Fall Apart gives us a vivid description of the Igbo culture through the stories of Okonkwo and his village, Umuofia. In regards to Igbo culture, contributions of women cannot be ignored. Although their position and status seems to be underestimated by the people in the novel, women do play an important role in the Igbo culture in four aspects: women take care of the children, do all the housework, serve as priestesses, and build relationships with other villages. Women who are mothers take the responsibility to care for the children. In tribal culture, women undertake the mission of educating the children through storytelling. The author describes those scenes to show the work that is done by women and their importance to the village. Besides housework in daily lives, Okonkwo s wives also need to prepare some events. For example, the author writes Okonkwo s wives had scrubbed the walls and the huts with red earth until they reflected light (p. 34). This example shows how Okonkwo s wives get prepared for the Feast of the New Yam. The Feast of the New Yam is the most important festival in the village, so the significance of women s work is shown by preparing the festival. Hence, women play an critical role not only in daily lives, but also in village events. Women like Chielo who are priestesses play an important role in the religious life. Chielo, the priestess, is a spokesperson for one of the Igbo gods, Agbala. Achebe writes in the novel, But Chielo...went on shouting that Agbala wanted to see his daughter (p. 90). In this example, Chielo is no longer Ekwefi s friend whom she often talks with, but a spokesperson becomes possessed by Agbala. A priestess is very powerful in Igbo culture. People regard the words through a priestess s mouth as oracles. Therefore, God s spokesperson is actually the spiritual leader of the people who hold in awe and veneration. Humans Causing Decline in Biodiversity Essays As far as we can say, intelligent, modern humans have been around for roughly 50,000 years, and in that time have altered the earth beyond recognition (Morrison, 2006). Most evident in recent years, the rapidity of technological advances both during and post the industrial revolution has been astonishing, but has come with a hefty ecological price. There is wide scientific consensus that we are presently witnessing the obsolescence of species on a prodigious scale. We are now having to accept the possibility that humans might just be a contributing influence. Predominantly we rely on one measure to compare the rate of species loss between various moments in history. The background rate of extinction is approximately 1 extinction per ... The Mascarene island of Mauritius national emblem remains to this day the dodo, despite the fact that it is one of the most infamous cases of manmade extinction. Previously isolated from humans, the largest member of the pigeon family possessed a curious and innocently trusting nature when sailors first arrived on the island in the early 1600 s. Despite its flesh being absurdly tasteless, the dodo s gullibility and lack of leggy zip (Bryson, 2003) proved an irresistible target for young seamen and their pets. So blissfully ignorant was the raphus cucullatus that you had only to set one squawking and all its friends from the immediate surroundings would rush to your side. Within seventy years of our first meeting with the dodos the last one was dead, pointlessly hunted to extinction by humans and the animals we introduced (Flannery Schouten, 2001). Myriad methods exist through which we are directly and indirectly placing pressure on flora and fauna. A growing global population puts more strain on the agriculture industry, triggering agrarian and urban expansion. Land clearing reduces habitat size, while large environmental enterprises such as the damming of rivers can either flood or dehydrate vast areas of terrain. • 6. Vedic And The Vedic Period The Vedic period lasted from c. 1750 to 500 BCE. The Vedic texts were arranged when the Indo Aryans started to inhabit the Ganges plain. With this new settlement, it transitioned to an agricultural society, and in the need for organization the society created a hierarchical government. The society had to include older habitants of the Ganges plain, and incorporated them under the Aryan varnas. They also had to appoint political and religious authority to the Brahmins and Kshatriyas. The Vedas, also called Śruti, center on the worship of the elements like fire and rivers, worship of heroic gods like Indra, Varuna and Agni, chanting of hymns and performance of sacrifices. God Indra became the central deity of the developing Old Indic culture. The philosophy of Vedanta transformed the Vedic worldview to monistic one. This led to the development of tantric metaphysics and gave rise to new forms of yoga, such as jnana yoga and bhankti yoga. People prayed for abundance of children, rain, cattle (wealth), long life and an afterlife in the heavenly world of the ancestors. This mode of worship has been preserved since then in Hinduism. However, the primacy of Vedic deities has been seconded to the deities of Puranic literature. • 13. Literature Review On Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation Literature Review Introduction Every day, men and women suffer from a stroke, when the arteries that bring blood to the brain are clogged, essentially suffocating the brain. This then damages the brain, leaving the victim unable to walk or speak properly. Oftentimes, these stroke patients can become hemiparetic, meaning that part of their brain was damaged, and half of their body became disabled or unusable. However, neuroscientists and physical therapists have developed a way to train the gait of these hemiparetic stroke patients, allowing them to walk properly again, using Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation(Cha, 2013, Habib, 2009, McIntosh, 2010, Schneider, Suh, Thaut, 2010). As brain plasticity is damaged severely during stroke, therapists must consider increasing the plasticity of the brain using repetition, which RAS utilizes(Cesqui, 2017, Gloag, 1985, Habib, 2009, McIntosh, 2010,Särkämö, 2008, Schneider, 2010, Suh). Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation utilizes repetitive rhythms in order to develop specific connections between the auditory and motor functions (Cha, 2013, Habib, 2009, McIntosh, 2010, Schneider, Suh, Thaut, 2010). The direct links between the auditory and motor functions become critical in RAS, as the stimulation of the auditory functions directly benefit the motor areas of the brain throughout RAS, benefiting gait in hemiparetic stroke patients (Cha, 2013, Gloag, 1985,Habib, 2009, McIntosh, 2010, Morris, 2009, Särkämö, 2008, Schneider, 2010, Suh, Thaut, 2010). ... • 17. Logic Spinoza s Argument for Substance Monism and Common Objections Spinoza s Ethics is widely thought of as Spinoza s greatest work. One noteworthy claim that he makes in his Ethics is his argument for substance monism, or the existence of only one substance. In Proposition 14, Part I of his Ethics, Spinoza states that There can be, or be conceived, no other substance but God. This statement amounts to saying that everything else in this world, whether it is extended or not, is a mere image of God. Spinoza s proof for this comes in three steps. One, assume that no two substances can share an attribute. Two, assume that there exists a substance that contains infinite attributes. Therefore, even if we could distinguish between two different affections, it would not necessarily say anything about the substances in themselves. Thus, we cannot distinguish between substances just by their affections. Thus, substances can only be distinguished by attributes, in which case no two substances can share an attribute. The second assumption Spinoza makes in proving substance monism is that God exists. Spinoza gives many proofs for this, I will only give one. It is given that for every thing there must be a cause or reason for its existence or non existence. It is also given that this reason must be inside, or outside the thing being considered. Suppose God does not exist. The reason for this must be inside or outside God. First, if the reason is inside God, it goes against our definition of God as a substance because substances necessarily exist (Proposition 7.) Thus the reason is not inside God. Second, if the reason exists outside God, then we would be implying that a thing outside of God exists that is causing God s non existence. This thing that explains God then necessarily has the same nature as God because if not, it could not be the cause of God (Proposition 3.) But if it does have the same nature, we would consequently be claiming that God exists because this thing outside of god will identical to God. Thus, no matter where the reason for God s non existence lies, we cannot prove that God does not exist, and therefore God must exist. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In particular, assess what this comparative work tells us about ancient Israelite views of God and God s creative work. Genesis 1, the first chapter in the bible, is easily the most well known creation story to come out of the Ancient Near East. However, that does not mean that it was the only creation story to come out of that period. The Babylonian epic, the Enuma Elish was one such story. It is in essence a history of the Babylonian gods, and in particular, one god, Marduk. It was ultimately written to justify his rise to power as the head of the Babylonian pantheon of gods. This was done in order to support Babylon s claim to pre eminence above all the other cities in the country (Heidel 1963, p. 14). Despite emerging from the same period, the two texts are starkly different. The former portrays an all powerful, transcendent, monotheistic God, while the latter describes a polytheistic hierarchy of gods who reach their ends through violence and conflict. The differences between the Enuma Elish and Genesis 1 are so vast and endless that there is no real reason to discuss about their literary dependence or mythological similarities (EOR, p. 2811). Some children develop signs seemingly from birth, while others have CDs that develop later on or out of Oppositional Defiant Disorders. The etiology of CDs continues to evolve as more research has resulted in additional understandings. The known causes of the disorder include: Genetic Influences, Prenatal Factors and Birth Complications, Neurobiological Factors, Social Cognitive Factors, Family Factors, Societal Factors, and Cultural Factors. (Mash, 2015) Genetic links to CD have been found in twin studies, where 50% of antisocial behavior derives from heredity origin. Externalizing behavior such as in CD are likely passed genetically from parents. The genetic risk for antisocial behavior is significant in multiple ways. (Mash, 2015) Firstly, it is noteworthy that insensitivity, impulsivity and temperament were found to be hereditary. (Waldman, 2011) CDs are strongly correlated with parental conditions: for Fathers it is antisocial personality disorder and for Mothers it is depressive disorders. The siege of Yorktown, was the last major battle against the British army under General Cornwallis, resulting in the inevitable surrender and American independence. There was a great deal of coordination prior to the actual engagement consequently leading to this outcome. The total number of soldiers consisted of 17,600 American and French soldiers, under the command of General George Washington, Marquis de Lafayette, Comte de Rochambeau, and Rear Admiral Francois Joseph Paul, the Comte de Grasse lead a French Naval Fleet. 8,300 British forces were commanded by General Charles Earl Cornwallis with 7,000 additional forces sent from General Sir Henry Clinton in New York. Middleton stated (2013), However, it is wrong to blame Clinton alone for Yorktown (p.387). Various factors led to the defeat of both British Generals. The lack of communications and insubordination of authority caused their defeat. This was the truth for the battle of Yorktown. Research methods are the various procedures, schemes and algorithms used in research (Rajasekar, 2013), whereas, methodology refers to philosophy that shape the diversity of the entire body of knowledge (McGregor and Murnane). This proposal outlines the methodology and structure that will be used to answer the research question, what are the effects of visual merchandising and how do they affect consumer purchase behavior in UK s food retail industry, particularly in, high end supermarket, Sainsbury s Plc. Research Philosophy For many centuries, philosophers have been debating about the relationship between data and theory. It is important to understand the main philosophical choices underlying the management research. This is because; firstly, it can help to clarify research design, that is, what kind of evidence is gathered from where and how such evidence is interpreted in order to provide good answers to the research question. Secondly, research philosophy helps the research to recognize which designs will work and which will not. Finally, it can help the researcher to adapt research design according to the constraints of different subject or knowledge structures (Easterby et al. 1991). A research project is considered to the power when it clearly outlines the epistemology study of knowledge and what we accept as being valid knowledge, or philosophical basis, known as a research paradigm (O Gorman and MacIntosh 2014). In order to understand reality, a series of processes and interpretations are necessary to make sense of the world to any individual. Not only interpretation but also the arrangement of information received from our senses is a must to create inside representations of the external world. This essay seeks to explore if new borns can detect faces, pointing out theory s strengths and weaknesses, consequently discussing previous research in order to expose evidence of babies face s recognition abilities. This said, according to Macknik and Martinez Conde (2014), Most of what we see is a confabulation of our brain: it makes stuff up based on the sparse data it gets from our eyes . In other words, individuals do not perceive reality but in what manner their brain understands it. In the early 1900s, Gestalt psychologists (such as Wertheimer), tried to explain the ideologies behind the understanding of sensations received in a sensory manner (Gross, 2015). Their main argument was that every individual is born able to perceive the world in specific ways, with no or little learning; that to make sense of reality, individuals had to perceive objects as being separated from other stimuli (seen as a whole) and once a differentiation between the figure and the ground was made, it then became possible to organise the ... They include dysfunctional mood, potentially including major depressive episodes, mild to moderate depressive episodes, manic episodes, hypomanic episodes, and mixed episodes, which are often separated by periods of relatively normal mood. (BDII). There are two types of Bipolar Disorders that I will cover in this paper. They include Bipolar I disorder (BP I) and Bipolar II disorder (BD II).According to the Epidemiologic Catchment Area Study, as cited by Kleinman, Lowin, Flood, Gandhi, Edgell, and Revicki (2003), the lifetime prevalence by race and ethnicity for BD I and BD II, are as follows: Caucasian 0.8% and 0.4%, African American 1.0% and 0.6%, and Hispanic 0.7% and 0.5%.. Lifetime prevalence rate for Bipolar I is 0.6%and bipolar II it is 0.3% over a 12 month period (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). People who have Bipolar I disorder typically experience alternating episodes of depression and mania where there is a separation of some level of normalcy in the sequence (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). • 32. Character Analysis Of Mae Holland In The Circle Mae Holland is an ambitious, intelligent young woman and the main character in Dave Eggers novel The Circle. Although her character is paramount to telling the novel s main story (detailing the prominence of the monopolistic, power hungry tech company known as The Circle ), she is hardly a protagonist, with her being ill informed at best at the book s beginning, and complicit in the Circle s nefarious doings by the novel s conclusion. Mae is an exceptionally bland character who offers little interesting internal dialogue and who s only notable overarching character trait is her ever present insecurity and her need to please others. Arguably, it could be said that Mae truly is not the main character of The Circle at all; Rather The Circle company itself, or more precisely Mae s relationship with the The Circle (and by association its dystopian philosophies) are what take center stage. As a character, Mae is malleable; a clean slate waiting to take orders and eager to agree with her superiors, she yearns for attention from others, is figuratively trapped inside The Circle s elaborate campus, and acts as a mouthpiece for the The Circle s leaders; repeating whatever they want her to say. Due to the fact that Mae Holland possess these characteristics, she is comparable to a parrot. The same way a parrot enters its cage with a blank mind, devoid of any calls or phrases, Mae approaches her job at The Circle with an open mind, not influenced by any previous work experiences. When thinking of the occupation she previously held prior to working at The Circle, Mae expresses extreme discontent. Her final day at the public utility in her hometown had been only three weeks ago they d been stupefied when she gave notice but it already seemed impossible that she wasted so much of her life there. Good riddance, Mae thought, to that gulag and all it represented (pg 4). The passage above indicates that Mae loathed her previous job, considering it a waist of her life and likening it to a gulag . This shows that Mae felt little passion or allegiance to her old job, and thus approaches her new job at The Circle with a blank mind, not considering her previous experiences valuable to her in any way. ... It was not until 1940 when General Motors and Oldsmobile introduced their automatic transmission called the Hydra Matic. This was the world s first taste of an automatic transmission. Since then, automatic transmissions in cars have become exponentially popular to the point where cars with manual transmissions only account for 6.5% of all of the cars in the U.S. On an episode of the YouTube show, Fast Lane Daily, a 6 year old posted the question asking would manual transmissions have died off by the time he was able to drive. This question really moved the crew of the show because there is a chance that in 10 or so years, manual transmissions could be a thing of the past. In Herrick s poem To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time , Herrick blatantly objectifies women as having only a sexual value, immediately in the poem; specifically that females are more valuable sexually while they are younger, and by extent more attractive in his eyes. This is assumed throughout the poem, and especially is embodied in his first stanza of the poem, when he states Gather ye rosebuds while ye may, Old time is still a flying! Herrick writes That age is best which is the first, When youth and blood are warmer. Herrick is using a more puissant theory to aid in transitioning from an ephemeral lifespan, into a technique in which he appeals to the reader s own desires. While one s youth and blood are warmer is Herrick s way of saying at a young age you may feel romantic desires at a high concentration. This however would not provide enough evidence to favor his position if he did not immediately follow it with a more sexually concerned notion. Herrick follows the text quoted above with the following in the same stanza. But being spent, the worse, and worst times still succeed the former. This is another form to demonize aging, and bring the time aspect of the carpe diem aspect back into the argument. At a young age, the reader best best in terms of emotional reward, which then becomes worse and worst as the individual ages. The last stanza brings the second fraction of a metaphysical carpe diem poem into conclusion. The final stanza states Then be not coy, but use your time, And, while ye may, go marry: For having lost but once your prime, You may forever tarry. Throughout the class, the theme of women being controlled by other oppressing forces, can be seen in many texts. Women have their decisions made for them in terms of their, food intake, appearances, and lifestyle choices. These ideas are seen in Beyond the Lights, where Noni s mother Macy both what Noni eats as well as how she looks. Again in The Gilded Six Bits, Missie May s hunger and food intake are controlled and judged by Joe, who believes because he is a working man, his hunger is more important. In Color Stories: Black Women and Colorism in the 21st Century, society controls women s appearances by pressuring them to look a certain way to be considered beautiful. In both Not That Kind of Girl and Borderlands: La Frontera, women s decisions about their bodies in a sexual manner are controlled by the pressures of men. How would the differing results inform a historian of the power of the Federal Government in comparison to the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution? (page 187). Shays Rebellion began because of the economic depression, insufficient harvests, and high duties, lead to farmers being seized and thrown in jail if they were unable to pay their taxes. This angered a large group in Massachusetts and a man named Daniel Shay, a Revolutionary war veteran, to arrange protests against the government. The Whiskey rebellion was triggered when George Washington s government placed a tax on distilled alcohol and whiskey. Protesters showed their discontent by tarring and feathering revenue officers, similar to those during the anti stamp act days. Although both rebellions were challenging the government, Shay s Rebellion revealed the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation as the national government could not tax, enforce laws or raise money for an army. Already weakened by the Revolutionary War, the Articles of Confederation could not defend against the rebellion.
