Cat Hills Volcanic
Cat Hills Volcanic Field for Major and Trace Element Analyses
By Nathanael Roybal; Geological Sciences, Undergraduate Research Scholars
ABSTRACT
This project focuses on preparing samples for major and trace element analyses of the Cat Hills
volcanic field. Fourteen rock samples were collected from different locations from the Cat Hills
volcanic field. Whole rock samples were crushed with a Chipmunk jaw crusher to obtain gravel
sized particles. Samples were separated using sieves with a mesh spacing of 0.0037 inches and
0.0195 inches. Gravel sized samples collected from the 0.0195 sieve fraction were leached in 5%
nitric acid for 25 minutes, rinsed in distilled water, and allowed to dry. After drying, gravels were
powdered using a tungsten carbide ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Double Indemnity And Reservoir Dog Analysis
The two films I analyzed are Double Indemnity (Wilder, 1944) and Reservoir Dogs (Tarantino,
1992) they follow the film noir tradition, which, according to Blaser (2008) is a style more
directors moved to employing after the world war. Averagely, film noir explores the many aspects
of being human such as the greed, lust, love, truth, and lies. The two films move away from the
tradition of the previous films that insisted on the family as central to humanity with women and
men having different roles in society. While the first movie, as the name suggests, is about an
insurance policy and the two leading characters manipulate others to their benefit, the second is
about a group of thieves who ambush one another. A typical film noirfollows and encounters the
same traits could lead regarding, as Blaser terms it in A Short Description of film noir, thematic
content (Blaser, 2008). The directors of both films use lighting and shadows to manipulate the
mood of the films and the black and white, low lit scenes which compliment the dialogues between
characters. Wilder s Double Indemnity tells a tale of murder, love, and betrayal while Reservoir
Dogsis about crooks who get caught up in a diamond heist that fails to run smoothly due to
deception. Both films showed the underbellies of society by human actions led by greed and lust,
they often make the perpetrators forget what could happen when things go wrong hence some of
the characters in both films end up facing the consequences for their involvement.
The directors of both films use lighting and shadows in almost every scene to depict the
darkness of the characters and focus on the mood of the films. The low lit dinner at the
beginning of Tarantino s Reservoir Dogs depicts the underworld in the rest of the film.
Furthermore, most of the scenes that dominate in the film noir are shot in an abandoned
warehouse that is lowly lit. Mr. Blonde asks Joe if he could shoot Mr. White and White suggests
that even if Blonde shot him in his dreams, he should wake up and apologize. The conversation
the group holds at the dinner table does not escalate into violence but is still corrupt and portrays
the character s take on violence. The director was trying to make the viewer see

How Does Shakespeare Use Similes In Hamlet s Soliloquy
Thinking before acting allows a person to reflect on his decisions before creating them. In
addition, it allows a person the freedom to choose what is right verse the consequence of the wrong
decision. In Hamlet Act 2 Scene 2, Shakespeare, allows readers to get insight of Hamlet s thoughts
and emotions through his emotional soliloquy. Shakespeare uses similes and a bitter tone to get
Hamlets disappointment across his readers. Using similes, Hamlet compares himself to a rascal and
using a bitter tone Hamlet shows his disgust towards his thoughtprocesses. Using similes, Hamlet
compares himself with a rascal to show his anger towards himself. For example, Hamlet states, Yet

There was an emphasis on securing public safety and exercising enhanced Commonwealth powers
over defence. Increased expenditure on defence meant the imposing of the first federal income tax,
along with probate and succession duties. The conclusion of the war meant that attention turned to
reconstruction, with the passing of legislation to provide for repatriation, war service homes and
industry assistance. The Commonwealth Police Force was established by legislation in 1917 after
Hughes was pelted with eggs at a conscription rally and in 1918 the Electoral Act established
preferential voting. Hughes s well known lack of patience combined with his energetic prosecution
of the war often led him to disregard the finer details of policy formulation. As part of this strategy
he was not beyond making cunning use of his deafness and the inadequacy of his rudimentary

Introduction The Sumerians were the most successful ancient civilization. The first reason is they
created the first written language. The second reason is they achieved many things. The last reason
is that they invented many things. Cuneiform The Sumerians were the most successful ancient
civilization because they created the first written language. For example, without the Sumerians,
we humans would not have the invention of writing. Their writing was called cuneiform.
Cuneiform is when they took a stylus and imprinted writing on clay tablets. The Sumerians would
sometimes also imprint on wax, stone, and metal. Cuneiform is considered the most significant
among the many cultural contributions of the Sumerians. Cuneiform writing is traced back from
c. 3500 3000 BC. The writing wasn t first actually words. They used pictographs for writing in
their records. Instead of writing letters s u n , a Sumerian would imprint a pictograph of what
they had as a sun on a clay tablet. Also, they used symbols that represented traded goods and
livestock. The Sumerians used writing to keep records and to keep their stories. Before the actual
writing on the clay tablets was created, the Sumerians originally had tokens. The tokens were items
that represented words. They were kept safe together in a sealed clay envelope. The way the
Sumerians knew what was in the envelope was that they press the tokens into the clay on the
outside. The reason that they had the tokens in

Niosomes are the novel carrier systems which have the bilayer structure. Niosomes can deliver
both hydrophilic and lipophilic drugs. But niosomes are unstable. There will be the aggregation,
leakage, storage and stability problems. Proniosomes are the versatile preparations which are
stable. These are the dried forms of niosomes. Zidovudine proniosomal gel was prepared of
different formulation. The permeation studies were carried using rat abdominal skin. Higher
percentage release was achieved using the Span 20 i.e., 97.55%В±1.1. Effect of lecithin and effect
of non ionic surfactants was carried out. The higher percent entrapment efficiency was achieved to
F1 formulation of about 74.70%. There was no effect of cholesterol concentration. As the lecithin
concentration was increased the percent drug release also increase but only at a certain extend. At
the certain limit surfactant concentration also increases the drug release. By using the proniosomes
as carries the bioavailability of Zidovudine increases to 97%. The proniosomes after hydration was
characterized using the light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Proniosomes are
suitable delivery systems for many of the hydrophilic and lipophilic drugs. Key words: Zidovudine,

The Percentage Of Public Elementary And Secondary School...
A statement of the problem
The percentage of public elementary and secondary school students in the United States who were
identified as English language learners (ELL) in the 1999 2000 school year was 6.7% of the total
school population (U.S. Department of Education, 2000). The increase is in mainly in the Hispanic
subpopulation and Hispanic students traditionally perform poorly on national assessments. The No
Child Left Behind legislation requires that all children will have a fair, equal, and significant
opportunity to receive a high quality education and reach, at a minimum, proficiency on
standardized assessments (Section 1001, p. 15). As ELL student populations increase so does the
pressure on teachers and schools to increase the numbers of ELL students who meet state governed
reading proficiency levels.
A review of the literature
The researchers in this study conclude that ELL students participating in secondary tier
interventions using curricula with a direct instruction approach and delivered in small groups
presented greater outcomes in student progress on DIBELS assessments and for the Woodcock
Reading Mastery test. The researchers cite other reading studies that have used these same
assessment methods as giving validity to their use. Their study outcomes further suggest that direct
instruction using evidence based reading practice in small groups of 3 5 students is a teaching
method that should be employed by teachers of ELL students in order to increase

Individualism In Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter And The...
The American Romantic era, lasting from early to mid 19th century, is characterized by its
emphasis on emotion and individualism. Within this movement, in Nathaniel Hawthorne s The
Scarlet Letter and Herman Melville s Bartleby, The Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street, the
characters set at the center of their respective narratives both challenge societal prejudices through
actions different from the social norm. Hawthorne s protagonist, Hester Prynne, is met with disgust
and disdain from the Puritan community after committing only one sin; contrarily, Melville s
Bartleby is first met with awe and love from his boss on Wall Street, working as a copyist. While
Hester goes above and beyond to change her public image, Bartleby burns out, leaving... Show

This woman has brought shame upon us all, and ought to die, (Hawthorne 49). With these harsh
words, Hester begins a new chapter of her life in New England as a condemned adulterer. The
gossips speak of marks and brands upon her bodice and forehead, and one is bold enough to suggest
that she ought to die, demonstrating exactly how hated Hester is at the beginning of the novel.
Hawthorne s statement that the gossip who suggests the worst punishment, death, is the ugliest of
them all infers that all the gossips are very ugly, while Hester remains beautiful, subtly providing a
certain insight that perhaps Hester is not the devil the town thinks she is. This demonstrates how
Hester stands apart from others in society, to such an extreme degree that she even looks different
from the other Puritans. Through the ostracization of Hester, Hawthorne shows how her lack of
motivational individuality has brought this fate upon her. He wants to prove to his reader that lack
of this element creates an unbalanced and isolated life, one of which nobody wants to live in.

Robert Frost s Mending Walls
In the story we read from Robert Frost called, Mending Walls we visualized the interaction
between the Narrator and his neighbor. In other words, the narrator says, We keep the wall between
us as we go , I let my neighbor know beyond the hill , and several more quotes from his short story
that relates to the mutual connection between the narrator, the wall, and of course the neighbor.
Likewise, there are certain events in our real world where the walls were beneficial and cruel to
our society; of course whenever it came down to it being cruel people immediately turned it
down. The Narrator telling the short story goes against the old way of having walls, and describes
what he feels and sees his neighbor as, Bringing a stone grasped... Show more content on

Betrayal In All Quiet On The Western Front
Has there really ever been a time in your life when everything has been all quiet? No matter who
you are, there is always something on your mind, or something that you have to deal with. There is
really only one way to achieve absolute quiet, and that is by death. War unfortunately gives millions
of people just that. All Quiet on the Western Frontis a book that tells a story of young men and
their journey throughout WW1 from the German perspective. Three main points of war that will
be mentioned in this paper are betrayal, horror, and friendship. To begin with, betrayal was a very
prevalent theme in All Quiet on the Western Front. Firstly, an example of betrayal was when the
soldiers were given nice new uniforms to address the Kaiser, but... Show more content on

First of all, the passing down of the boots was a great example of friendship. With each passing
of the pair of boots came even more memories that are shared. It was also like a traditional type
of thing among the soldiers. Also, another time when a tremendous amount of friendship was
shown was when Bertinck stopped the flamethrowers. He sacrificed his own life to save the
lives of his fellow squad mates. Lastly, when Paul carried Kat all the way back to the dressing
station was a great example of friendship. Paul did not care what he had to do to make it back to
the dressing station to save Kat. It was a long and tedious walk for him but they got there
eventually. Unfortunately a piece of shrapnel hit Kat in the back of the head that was unseen, and
he died. Thus, friendship was probably one of the most important things to have during

Selecting The Appropriate Research Methods
3. Methodology When selecting the appropriate research methods, it was important for me to
carefully consider the approaches that would best fit my research in order to reach meaningful
conclusions. I decided to choose approaches that I see fit around my research topic and would
ensure I achieve the results to come out of my research. As (Walker, 1985, p.46) advocates that Just
as recipes are not simply things that are done to food, but become concepts within which method
and substance are compounded. Methods in research can become an intrinsic part of the project.
The methods we choose are, in this sense, there to be tested, just as much as the substantive
hypothesis . This claims that the methods that are chosen to embark on an area of research are a
vital part of the project and need to be taken into account just as much as the question that the
methods are used to answer it. Therefore, the two approaches I chose to shape my research were a
case studyand appreciative inquiry to allow me to collect the data I had selected which was the
following; questionnaires, interviews and observations.
3.1 Case Study
I have chosen to approach my research by using a case study approach which builds up a rich
picture of a case using different kinds of data collection and gathering the views, perceptions and
ideas of diverse individuals relating to the case. (Yin, 2009, p.15) states The case study method is
most likely to be appropriate for how and why questions . This supports

Grizzly Man Sparknotes
Werner Herzog is arguably one of the most creative and innovative directors of our time. He has
produced many pictures over the past few decades ranging from a documentary on Antarctica s
beauty, to a short series on death row inmates. Herzog gained recognition as a German director in
the late 70 s to early 80 s for films like Signs of Life and Fitzcarraldo, receiving much critical
acclaim. Since then he has released many box office hits like Grizzly Manand Recscue dawn, based
on the true story of Dieter Dengler. Grizzly Man, released in 2006, is about the tragic death of an
eccentric wild life activist named Timothy Treadwell. This analysis will examine the validity to the
indexical and interpretive material in Grizzly Man. Herzog uses original Timothy Treadwell
footage as well as personal interviews to represent the reality he perceives, using the reflexive and
performative modes in the documentary. Although it is impossible to show the entire picture of
Timothys story, there is enough information provided to support Herzogs position revealed at the
end. Without Treadwell alive to speak for himself, the film remains balanced through the many
interviews of people in his life.
The film starts out with Treadwells original footage of him talking to the camera. In the
background are two huge bears, at a fairly distant but still frightening distance. He is alone in the
Alaskan wilderness speaking to the camera about his love for bears, saying that he is there just to

The Importance Of Trauma Informed Care
As a support worker, it is necessary that organisation would need to have a foundational
understanding of how to identify trauma associated responses. Similarly, there needs to be
understanding when initiating treatment interventions for trauma related symptoms, it is aimed to

Advanced Technology of the Treatment of Breast Cancer
This year 203,000 women will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer, and 40,000 of them are expected
to die. Breast Cancer is the second leading cause of cancer related death among women the ages of
35 54. There are numerous ways breast cancer can be treated if found early. The key to treating
breast cancer is early detection, beast self exams, and early mammograms. One out of every eight
women will get diagnosed with Breast Cancer this year; therefore, new advanced technology of the
treatment of Breast Cancer is the key to life after the disease.

Another way for early detection is Clinical Examination. Women should have their breast checked
by a health professional once each year. Some lumps found, aren t always cancer. However, any
lumps found need to be checked by a professional as soon as it is found.
Checking yourself monthly is a trait that every women should have. Starting at age 2 all women
should check their breast each month. Looking for lumps or thickening in the breast, or any
change in the texture of skin, and nay changes in breast sizes The technology of the treatment of
breast cancer had come a long way in the past ten years. Ever since the mammograms which are
special breast X ray that can detect 90 percent of cancers, even before the lump can be felt.
Mammograms are very important be aren t perfect, they still have ten percent chance of missing
some sort of detection. The breast is exposed to a small dose of radiation to produce an image of
internal breast tissue. The image of the breast is produced as a result of some of the x rays being
absorbed (attenuation) while others pass through the breast to expose the film. The exposed film is
either placed in a developing machine, producing images much like the negatives from a 35 mm
camera, or images are digitally stored on a computer (RSNA).

Essay Phone Industry Analysis falls to Oligopoly Structure
In this following report I will discuss the phone industry and analysed it in great detail. I will
analysis the market structure and try and understand why the mobile industry falls to heavily
oligopoly structure. I will highlight all the structures, however I will discuss in detail how, for
example Vodafone can be incorporated in the porter s five forces method to show how the mobile
industry has devolved over the years and to understand if consumers are driven by the actual
technology of the phone but if it driven more by style. Market structure is when an industry has a
number of firms making identical products. An industry s market structure depends on the how
many firms are in that in industry and how they will compete in the market.... Show more content on

Oligopoly: This is an industry with very little firms in the market. If they conspire, they weaken
output and raise profits the way a monopoly would and should do. For example the mobile
phone industry is an oligopoly what with so many companies for example Apple, LG and
Samsung all competing together. Supermarkets are oligopoly s as they make supernormal profits
as well. Monopolistic competition When an industry contains many rival firms, each of which
has a comparable but at least slightly different product. Restaurants, are an example, all serve
food but of different types of food and in different sites. Manufacture costs are above what could
be attained if firms sold equal products, but consumers have an advantage from the variety. The
Porter s Five Forces method is a simple for comprehending where power is within a business. This
is helpful, because it helps you realise both the strength of your current competing situation, and the
strength of a position you re debating moving to in the future. The five important forces are;
Supplier Power: This highlights that it is easy for suppliers to rise up their prices. This is
determined by the number of suppliers, the uniqueness of their product, their control over the buyer,
and the cost of changing from one buyer to another. The scarcer the supplier choices you might

Texas Government
Texas is the second most populous state as well as the second largest state in the United States of
America (Brown, Langenegger, Garcia, Lewis, Biles, 2014). With a huge number of people
currently calling Texas their home, it would make sense to draw the conclusion that the Texas
government must make this state a great place to live by serving its citizens to the best of its

This is an area where public opinion and public policy match in that they both heavily favor
regressive taxation (Brown et al., 2014). Tausanovitch and Warshaw (2013) have developed a
means of understanding political preference in comparison with public opinion and public
policy to determine whether a government is best serving the desires of its people. This type of
tool would be very useful for the state of Texas to use to determine whether the government is
serving the desires of its constituents. But, just because public opinion and public policy line up
doesn t mean that the interests of citizens are best served because some groups may still be left
out and those groups may have more needs than others. Texas current operational stance of pay
as you go makes for a very tight budget where the government cannot always afford to spend
money on things the citizens of Texas may need. For instance, Texas operates its roads with the
same pay as you go mentality by opting for toll roads (Brown et al., 2014). Toll roads receive
some government funding through state issued bonds and the collection of tolls after completion.
This system is hardly fair for the citizens who do not use the toll roads but still must subsidize
them through taxpayer dollars when the toll revenue does not meet the projected earnings. There
are also many more citizens in Texas who live below the poverty line, 18.4% for Texas in
comparison to 15.1% for the entire United States (Brown et al., 2014). With a larger proportion of
citizens in poverty the burden to the state becomes greater, especially when funding remains low
(Insert citation). Texas is just hurting its citizens by not being able to provide as much support and
assistance to them as possible. Texas was given the opportunity, along with every other state in the
union, to expand its offering of Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. A sample of public

The Picture of Dorian Gray
The Picture of Dorian Gray Parallel between Dorian and his Self portrait
Oscar Wilde s novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray , presented many themes. One such theme is the
idea of doubleness. Oscar Wilde used this as a technique to link his characters and ideas. While
doubleness is shown in many aspects of the novel, the most obvious and most important presence of
it is the parallel between the main character, Dorian, and his self portrait. This bond between Dorian
and his picture is crucial to the understanding of the novel. Dorian and the picture are in a sense one
character acting as two.
When Basil paints the portrait of Dorian Gray, Dorian becomes angry and curses the picture. The
idea of the picture ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It wasn t until his conversation with Harry that he embraced his new discovery as a blessing. He
vowed to live his life as he pleased; seeking only happiness and pleasure. Any sins he committed
would be forever hidden within the picture. He no longer had to except responsibility for his
actions. Wilde states that the portrait was to bear the burden of his shame: that was all. (86)
Dorian would forever keep his youth and innocent looks, but only in return for his heart and
soul. He valued beauty so much that he willingly gave up his essence and being. The picture
truly is the most magical of mirrors (87) and as Wilde states, as it had revealed to him his own
body, so it would reveal to him his own soul. (87) Dorian is empty at this point. He is nothing more
then a walking breathing corpse. The picture has become him.
This life suited Dorian fine until his later years when he begins to realize his many mistakes and
feels regret for his actions. The portrait that haunted him for so many years was a direct reflection
as to how horrible he really was. In the beginning of the novel Dorian thought that the picture
would mock him by remaining young and beautiful, but ironically, the picture mocked him for all
of its days after the change. It drove him crazy, and made him weary and paranoid of everyone. He
feared the thought of anyone discovering it and exposing him for the fraud he was. In a

Essay on The Controlled Substances Act
The Controlled Substances Act (CSA) gives certain bodies or individuals such as research
scientists, pharmacies, doctors and manufacturers the legal right to access controlled substances.
Such persons or individuals must register with the Drug Enforcement Authority (DEA) whom
provides the authorisation and regulation for the access (Food and Drug Administration 2009). Yeh
2012 wrote that registration is granted on a public interest basis, generally relating to public health,
safety and compliance with state law.
Whilst the DEA authorises the aforementioned bodies to access the substances, it ultimately retains
control and ownership over the substances. All distribution is thoroughly recorded through from

As researched by the Australian Crime Commission, the synthetic cannabinoids appear as a dried,
shredded plant material. The forensic analysis of a range of brands, including the ones seized by
ACT Policing, has indicated that the active ingredient varies both within and between the brands
(ACC 2013).
The naphthoylindole JWH 018 is one of the most common active substances in synthetic
cannabinoids, specifically it is alleged to be in the variety of Spice brand products (NCPIC, 2013)
seized by ACT Policing.
Whilst most synthetic cannabinoids supplied to the United States are believed to be from Asia
(Hunterdon Drug Awareness Program 2012), unconfirmed reports suggest Australiareceives most
of its supply from New Zealand, since the founder of Kronic expanded his New Zealand business to
Australia in 2010 (Australian Drug Foundation 2013). The ban of synthetic cannabinoids in New
Zealand was imposed on 8 May 2014 (NZ Drug Foundation 2014), which may influence the supply
of synthetic cannabinoids to Australia in the future.
The ACT Policing investigation is currently ongoing.

Negative Effects Of Violent Video Games
September 10, 2017
Writing Assignment #1
Blair Baugher
Introduction The issue of whether or not violent video games encourage children, and teens to be
violent is a heavily debated issue. There are many people who believe that violent video games
DO cause violence in children, and teens, while there are also many people who believe that
violent video games DO NOT cause violence in children, and teens. The relevance of this topic
ties into psychology by further examining how people learn, and the techniques that are prevalent
in how they do so. By stating that violent behavior can arise simply from playing a violent video
game, one is relying on the notion that people will always act in a matter that is reflective of what
they are surrounded by.
Summary
Through significant research, there is evidence that violence has risen in America. Some argue
that this is because children and teens are spending more, and more time playing violent video
games. Though there is ample evidence to prove that playing violent video games can have
negative effects on someone, there is no evidence to directly show that the correlation between the
two rising numbers is related. In the reading, Steven F. Gruel, who argued before the supreme
court, believes that playing, and or watching violent video games, causes children to act violently.
The cause, Gruel believes, isn t directly the video games, but the effect they leave on the children.
Children are spending more of their time playing video

What Is Nietzsche s Response To Modernism
In 1882, German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche declared, God is dead! God remains dead!
And we have killed him (120). Modern thought and its scientific basis rejected the existence or
need of any God, religion, or their accompanying belief in absolute, objective morality. This
rejection of the divine preoccupies a greater segment of the population after Nietzsche s death as
humanity seeks redemption from the atrocities of two world wars. However, rejection of God and
religion removes the healing potential of faith, resulting in a modern society yearning for meaning
among the ashes of Europe s dead. No answer presents itself easily, but one of modernism s
philosophical responses reveals itself in the devastation. As Wylie Sypher surmised, we have lived
amid the dust and crashes of the twentieth century and have learned how the direst calamities that

High School Musical Analysis
When watching a movie about high schoolers, there are usually many different groups of
students who all conform to one social group only. Take the movie High School Musical for
example. There is specifically one scene devoted to a song about fitting in with the status quo .
There are stereotypical groups such as jocks, nerds, theater geeks, skater kids, and the popular
kids in this movie and in other movies like it. Each of these groups can be broken down and
explained more in depth. When thinking of a jock, people would most likely picture a muscular,
sweaty guy wearing some sort of jersey. A stereotypical jock is usually also fairly popular, so
there is some overlap between the groups in some cases. Everybody knows their name and
whenever people talk to them, the subject of sports usually comes up. People ask questions like,
How s the team looking this year? or When do you have practice? Being a jock doesn t
necessarily mean that your grades are bad, but with practices every evening or two to three hours,
finding time to study and work can be difficult for jocks. Teachers usually like jocks and they
might ask them questions about the game from the week before. This bond between jocks and
teachers can give the jocks an advantage. The teachers might be more lenient when it comes to
assignments if they know that the jock has a big game coming up or had a tournament the weekend
before. Nerds are on the opposite end of the spectrum. They tend to spend their free time

The Importance Of Learning A Secondary Language
The vast majority of the people residing in the valley, especially in the city of Brownsville, Texas
are fluent in both Spanish and English, and therefore considered bilingual. Brownsville has been
considered a highly illiterate and poorly educated city, where learning a secondary language such as
English, drastically changes those discriminating statistics. The argument is that learning a
secondary language indeed supports literacy development from an early age, by readingaloud to
children, making them participants of a learning incentive, and family literacy practices. A
development in literacy significantly increases readingachievement testscores, helps students
become better at grammatical judgment and word recognition, and improves their cognitive
development.
In the article Learning to Read across Languages: Cross Linguistic Relationships in First and
Second Language Literacy Development by Keiko Koda and Annette M. Zehler, showed that
reading aloud to children in elementary schools, in a secondary language increases their
phonological awareness as they relate their slight knowledge from their first language, and apply it
to the new acquisition of the second. The authors claimed that the field of second (L2) and foreign
language reading has pursued an understanding of factors that impact the reading process, one of
which is first language (LI) literacy. To support their claim, the authors brought together theories
and research on the interaction of languages,

Cars today are more user friendly and designed to make the driving experience as easy as

expectations of the first ever car inventor could have dreamed of .
In 1768, the first auto mobile ran by steam power was created by Nicolas Joseph Cugnot. The first

states that Karl Benz created the first ever automobile in 1886. He created the first gasoline

considered the first manufactured line of vehicles. The first long distance trip was taken by
Bertha Benz in 1888 . Because she had the courage to take this trip, Benz was able to expand his

Despite recurrent health problems in the 1990s, John Paul maintained an active schedule. In
September 1993 he traveled to the Baltic republics, the first papal visit to countries of the
former Soviet Union. His journey to Lebanon in May 1997, to give his support to the Christian
minority and to heal religious divisions there, was followed by a visit to Brazil in October. On a
five day visit to Cuba in January 1998, he denounced U.S. trade sanctions against that country and
pressed Fidel Castro s government to release political prisoners and ease restrictions on religious
and political rights. He also pressed Nigeria on human rights issues during a three day visit two

John Paul s papacy, that of Jewish Christian reconciliation, the Vatican issued a statement in mid

the document received a mixed reception from Jewish groups, in part because it defended the

Selfishness In Kate Chopin s A Pair Of Silk Stockings
Selfishness is not living as one wishes to live, it is asking others to live as one wishes to live.
This quote by Oscar Wilde is relative to the actions of Mrs.Sommers, considering her children
and the state in which her family lives in. In A Pair of Silk Stockings, by Kate Chopin, a mother
of at least four children temporarily escapes the hardships of motherhood for a day and enjoys
long missed extravagance. She was formerly a woman of luxury, and when she acquires a large
amount of money, she decides to rediscover the world of riches. Her actions are selfish in doing
so, because her familyis not in a stable condition, she is a mother of several children, and she does
not deserve this opulent treatment. Mrs.Sommers s family is not

INTRODUCTION
The Canadian Pillsbury ready baked goods cookie line is experiencing disappointing performance,
and the marketing manager at General Mills Canada Corporation is under pressure to make strategic
decisions that will help turn around the segment. The marketing manager has engaged the help of
the consumer insights team to conduct market research studies that will shed light on consumers
and their attitudes, behaviours, and preferences towards the product.

*(The Pillsbury Doughboy is an advertising icon and mascot of the Pillsbury company)
THE PROBLEM STATEMENT
RBG in Canada branch performance were not satisfied over the past two years whereas
refrigerated cookies had always been the most profitable product line of its category. Indeed, the
volume growth between 2004 2006 had remained nearly flat at 1% and the household penetration
had fallen to 24% from previous years.
The goal is to understand the possible reasons of decline in cookie sales, through the consumer
insights (taste, advertising, current brand messaging of the Pills bury).
For this purpose, the marketing manager Guillen wants to see the difference between consumer
markets of Canada and that of United States in order to design a marketing strategy according to it
to boost the sales as well as profit of this category.
HOSTEDE ANALYSIS
In order to understand these cultural differences here are the Hofstede framework:

Search Of An Innovative General Education Program
In search of an innovative general education program I came across a list of twenty five best
colleges and universities. On that list is the College of Atlantic which caught my attention. Why?
The school offers only one major program in Human Ecology and all students in the college are
subject to it but in a different way (Young et al, 2006). As opposed to Southern Adventist University
a traditional cafeteria style.
The atmosphere of the campus is exceptional because of the surrounding sea Hence, . The world is
not divided by major . Neither is College of Atlantic . With this premise, the school deliberately
accepts no more than 350 students because they viewed the school as a family. The smaller the
group is the better for them to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After or during their tenure at the college students are able to do their internship both locally and
abroad. Sufficing to say upon completion and graduating these students are ready for the world of
work in whatever profession they studied, they are well equipped to be lawyer, scientist, teacher
and even a musician.
However, Southern Adventist University, a traditional higher educationinstitution established by
Seventh Day Adventist Church offers a wide number of programs or a chain of programs from
Certificate to the doctoral level, where students choose which area or program to major in. This
institution, unlike College of Atlantis nurtures Christlikeness and encourages the pursuits of truths,
wholeness, and a life of service to its students and society at large. This school embrace the
integration of faith and learning as they model academic and professional excellence . Hence, this
type of education when studied assisted in the redemptive process as well as well as developing the
whole person through harmonious development of the physical, mental, and spiritual and social
dimensions the individual becomes better equipped to bring wholeness to a broken world (White
1872). Although, College of Atlantic s curriculum concentrates mostly on nature, that Christ like
approach is not obvious throughout the culture of the school. This creates the vast

Reasons For Studying Abroad In Thailand
A lot of preparation is needed to make study abroad fulfilling. I would want to study abroad in
Thailand to realize my long term goal. For that reason, I have worked on preparations for learning
and growing lots with the exchange study abroad in Thailand.
First, improving language abilities and international exchanges. To stay a long time over the sea.
Communications in a language of the country are indispensable. In addition, international students
learn in English at Chiang Mai Rajabhat University in Thailand.
For this reason, I am improving my English ability of university s Learning English program as
English Connection (EC) and Talk Time. In the fall semester of the second year grade, I took a
class for exchange students. In that class, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Something sees this study abroad is due to my willingness to realize my future goals. The cause is
that my goal is to contribute to the reality of a multicultural symbiosis society as a social worker,
and to think that Thai learning is important.
Something is, as globalization progresses in Japan, social workers are also under an obligation to
have language skills and international feelings. The number of foreigners who live together in
Japan and those who have roots abroad has increased, and it is increasing that social workers will
assist those people because of that. The need for multicultural social work to respond to such needs
is rising.
I feel that intention also in my personal experience. I am working part time in community volunteer
activities and child welfare facilities. Under such circumstances, I met many people who have roots
abroad. I also had to experience and realized the necessity of international welfare more.
For this reason, language skills in diversifying and internationalizing needs are imperative. For that
reason, learning English, Thai, and international senses during Thailand s study abroad helps to
become active as a social

Cat Hills Volcanic Cat Hills Volcanic Field for Major and Trace Element Analyses By Nathanael Roybal; Geological Sciences, Undergraduate Research Scholars ABSTRACT This project focuses on preparing samples for major and trace element analyses of the Cat Hills volcanic field. Fourteen rock samples were collected from different locations from the Cat Hills volcanic field. Whole rock samples were crushed with a Chipmunk jaw crusher to obtain gravel sized particles. Samples were separated using sieves with a mesh spacing of 0.0037 inches and 0.0195 inches. Gravel sized samples collected from the 0.0195 sieve fraction were leached in 5% nitric acid for 25 minutes, rinsed in distilled water, and allowed to dry. • 3. Double Indemnity And Reservoir Dog Analysis The two films I analyzed are Double Indemnity (Wilder, 1944) and Reservoir Dogs (Tarantino, 1992) they follow the film noir tradition, which, according to Blaser (2008) is a style more directors moved to employing after the world war. Averagely, film noir explores the many aspects of being human such as the greed, lust, love, truth, and lies. The two films move away from the tradition of the previous films that insisted on the family as central to humanity with women and men having different roles in society. While the first movie, as the name suggests, is about an insurance policy and the two leading characters manipulate others to their benefit, the second is about a group of thieves who ambush one another. A typical film noirfollows and encounters the same traits could lead regarding, as Blaser terms it in A Short Description of film noir, thematic content (Blaser, 2008). The directors of both films use lighting and shadows to manipulate the mood of the films and the black and white, low lit scenes which compliment the dialogues between characters. Wilder s Double Indemnity tells a tale of murder, love, and betrayal while Reservoir Dogsis about crooks who get caught up in a diamond heist that fails to run smoothly due to deception. Both films showed the underbellies of society by human actions led by greed and lust, they often make the perpetrators forget what could happen when things go wrong hence some of the characters in both films end up facing the consequences for their involvement. The directors of both films use lighting and shadows in almost every scene to depict the darkness of the characters and focus on the mood of the films. The low lit dinner at the beginning of Tarantino s Reservoir Dogs depicts the underworld in the rest of the film. Furthermore, most of the scenes that dominate in the film noir are shot in an abandoned warehouse that is lowly lit. Mr. Blonde asks Joe if he could shoot Mr. White and White suggests that even if Blonde shot him in his dreams, he should wake up and apologize. The conversation the group holds at the dinner table does not escalate into violence but is still corrupt and portrays the character s take on violence. A statement of the problem The percentage of public elementary and secondary school students in the United States who were identified as English language learners (ELL) in the 1999 2000 school year was 6.7% of the total school population (U.S. Department of Education, 2000). The increase is in mainly in the Hispanic subpopulation and Hispanic students traditionally perform poorly on national assessments. The No Child Left Behind legislation requires that all children will have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to receive a high quality education and reach, at a minimum, proficiency on standardized assessments (Section 1001, p. 15). As ELL student populations increase so does the pressure on teachers and schools to increase the numbers of ELL students who meet state governed reading proficiency levels. A review of the literature The researchers in this study conclude that ELL students participating in secondary tier interventions using curricula with a direct instruction approach and delivered in small groups presented greater outcomes in student progress on DIBELS assessments and for the Woodcock Reading Mastery test. The researchers cite other reading studies that have used these same assessment methods as giving validity to their use. Their study outcomes further suggest that direct instruction using evidence based reading practice in small groups of 3 5 students is a teaching method that should be employed by teachers of ELL students in order to increase ... Within this movement, in Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter and Herman Melville s Bartleby, The Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street, the characters set at the center of their respective narratives both challenge societal prejudices through actions different from the social norm. Hawthorne s protagonist, Hester Prynne, is met with disgust and disdain from the Puritan community after committing only one sin; contrarily, Melville s Bartleby is first met with awe and love from his boss on Wall Street, working as a copyist. This woman has brought shame upon us all, and ought to die, (Hawthorne 49). With these harsh words, Hester begins a new chapter of her life in New England as a condemned adulterer. Hawthorne s statement that the gossip who suggests the worst punishment, death, is the ugliest of them all infers that all the gossips are very ugly, while Hester remains beautiful, subtly providing a certain insight that perhaps Hester is not the devil the town thinks she is. This demonstrates how Hester stands apart from others in society, to such an extreme degree that she even looks different from the other Puritans. Through the ostracization of Hester, Hawthorne shows how her lack of motivational individuality has brought this fate upon her. Methodology When selecting the appropriate research methods, it was important for me to carefully consider the approaches that would best fit my research in order to reach meaningful conclusions. I decided to choose approaches that I see fit around my research topic and would ensure I achieve the results to come out of my research. As (Walker, 1985, p.46) advocates that Just as recipes are not simply things that are done to food, but become concepts within which method and substance are compounded. Methods in research can become an intrinsic part of the project. The methods we choose are, in this sense, there to be tested, just as much as the substantive hypothesis . This claims that the methods that are chosen to embark on an area of research are a vital part of the project and need to be taken into account just as much as the question that the methods are used to answer it. Therefore, the two approaches I chose to shape my research were a case studyand appreciative inquiry to allow me to collect the data I had selected which was the following; questionnaires, interviews and observations. 3.1 Case Study I have chosen to approach my research by using a case study approach which builds up a rich picture of a case using different kinds of data collection and gathering the views, perceptions and ideas of diverse individuals relating to the case. Oligopoly: This is an industry with very little firms in the market. If they conspire, they weaken output and raise profits the way a monopoly would and should do. For example the mobile phone industry is an oligopoly what with so many companies for example Apple, LG and Samsung all competing together. Supermarkets are oligopoly s as they make supernormal profits as well. Monopolistic competition When an industry contains many rival firms, each of which has a comparable but at least slightly different product. Tausanovitch and Warshaw (2013) have developed a means of understanding political preference in comparison with public opinion and public policy to determine whether a government is best serving the desires of its people. This type of tool would be very useful for the state of Texas to use to determine whether the government is serving the desires of its constituents. But, just because public opinion and public policy line up doesn t mean that the interests of citizens are best served because some groups may still be left out and those groups may have more needs than others. Texas current operational stance of pay as you go makes for a very tight budget where the government cannot always afford to spend money on things the citizens of Texas may need. For instance, Texas operates its roads with the same pay as you go mentality by opting for toll roads (Brown et al., 2014). Toll roads receive some government funding through state issued bonds and the collection of tolls after completion. This system is hardly fair for the citizens who do not use the toll roads but still must subsidize them through taxpayer dollars when the toll revenue does not meet the projected earnings. There are also many more citizens in Texas who live below the poverty line, 18.4% for Texas in comparison to 15.1% for the entire United States (Brown et al., 2014). Whilst most synthetic cannabinoids supplied to the United States are believed to be from Asia (Hunterdon Drug Awareness Program 2012), unconfirmed reports suggest Australiareceives most of its supply from New Zealand, since the founder of Kronic expanded his New Zealand business to Australia in 2010 (Australian Drug Foundation 2013). The ban of synthetic cannabinoids in New Zealand was imposed on 8 May 2014 (NZ Drug Foundation 2014), which may influence the supply of synthetic cannabinoids to Australia in the future. The ACT Policing investigation is currently ongoing. References Australian Crime Commission, 2013. Drug Analouges and Novel Substances, p, 2. • 24. Negative Effects Of Violent Video Games September 10, 2017 Writing Assignment #1 Blair Baugher Introduction The issue of whether or not violent video games encourage children, and teens to be violent is a heavily debated issue. There are many people who believe that violent video games DO cause violence in children, and teens, while there are also many people who believe that violent video games DO NOT cause violence in children, and teens. The relevance of this topic ties into psychology by further examining how people learn, and the techniques that are prevalent in how they do so. By stating that violent behavior can arise simply from playing a violent video game, one is relying on the notion that people will always act in a matter that is reflective of what they are surrounded by. Summary Through significant research, there is evidence that violence has risen in America. Some argue that this is because children and teens are spending more, and more time playing violent video games. Though there is ample evidence to prove that playing violent video games can have negative effects on someone, there is no evidence to directly show that the correlation between the two rising numbers is related. In the reading, Steven F. Gruel, who argued before the supreme court, believes that playing, and or watching violent video games, causes children to act violently. The cause, Gruel believes, isn t directly the video games, but the effect they leave on the children. Children are spending more of their time playing video ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 25. What Is Nietzsche s Response To Modernism In 1882, German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche declared, God is dead! God remains dead! And we have killed him (120). Modern thought and its scientific basis rejected the existence or need of any God, religion, or their accompanying belief in absolute, objective morality. This rejection of the divine preoccupies a greater segment of the population after Nietzsche s death as humanity seeks redemption from the atrocities of two world wars. However, rejection of God and religion removes the healing potential of faith, resulting in a modern society yearning for meaning among the ashes of Europe s dead. No answer presents itself easily, but one of modernism s philosophical responses reveals itself in the devastation. As Wylie Sypher surmised, we have lived amid the dust and crashes of the twentieth century and have learned how the direst calamities that befall man seem to prove that humanlife at... Take the movie High School Musical for example. There is specifically one scene devoted to a song about fitting in with the status quo . There are stereotypical groups such as jocks, nerds, theater geeks, skater kids, and the popular kids in this movie and in other movies like it. Each of these groups can be broken down and explained more in depth. When thinking of a jock, people would most likely picture a muscular, sweaty guy wearing some sort of jersey. A stereotypical jock is usually also fairly popular, so there is some overlap between the groups in some cases. Everybody knows their name and whenever people talk to them, the subject of sports usually comes up. People ask questions like, How s the team looking this year? or When do you have practice? Being a jock doesn t necessarily mean that your grades are bad, but with practices every evening or two to three hours, finding time to study and work can be difficult for jocks. Teachers usually like jocks and they might ask them questions about the game from the week before. This bond between jocks and teachers can give the jocks an advantage. The teachers might be more lenient when it comes to assignments if they know that the jock has a big game coming up or had a tournament the weekend before. The Importance Of Learning A Secondary Language The vast majority of the people residing in the valley, especially in the city of Brownsville, Texas are fluent in both Spanish and English, and therefore considered bilingual. Brownsville has been considered a highly illiterate and poorly educated city, where learning a secondary language such as English, drastically changes those discriminating statistics. The argument is that learning a secondary language indeed supports literacy development from an early age, by readingaloud to children, making them participants of a learning incentive, and family literacy practices. A development in literacy significantly increases readingachievement testscores, helps students become better at grammatical judgment and word recognition, and improves their cognitive development. In the article Learning to Read across Languages: Cross Linguistic Relationships in First and Second Language Literacy Development by Keiko Koda and Annette M.
