Whales (Cetacea) are unique among mammals in that they possess exceptionally dense,
pachyosteosclerotic tympanic bullae1. Along the margin of the bulla is a highly mineralized,
extremely dense wall of bone called the involucrum that serves as a special adaptation to life in the
sea and as a means to facilitate sound reception and directionality underwater2,3,4. Moreover, this
cetacean synapomorphy plays an important role in distinguishing its members from the ancestral
terrestrial artiodactyls from which whales diverged5. When cut into cross sections, the involucral
region of the tympanic bullae in many mysticete (baleen whale) lineages reveals three easily
distinguishable zones of concentric laminar growth. Here we hypothesize that these three distinct
zones identified along the length of the tympanic bullae are capable of recording life history events
during early development, when the cetacean tympanoperiotic region is known to be rapidly
ossifying6. We propose that the innermost zone (1) represents rapid in utero growth, the
intermediary zone (2) represents rapid birth and postnatal development, and the outermost zone (3),
markedly thinner, represents slower, more lamellar development from weaning on through

Objectives addressed in this experiment includes: (1) characterization of oil samples by
determination of saponification and iodine numbers (2) estimation of molecular weights of fat or oil
sample (3) explain the methods employed in the characterization of oil or fat samples
METHODOLOGY
Determination of Saponification Number
Oil used were lauric oil, vegetable oil and lard. Each triacylglycerol was weighed to 1.0g. Each
were placed n separate round bottom flask.. 15mL of 5% alcoholic KOH was added into each
flask from a burette. KOH was used in order to hydrolyze the glyceryl esters to glycerol and the
potassium salts of fatty acids. Alcoholic KOH was used to allow oil be soluble in it. [1] Two to
three pieces of boiling chips were added so as to prevent formation of large bubbles [1]. It was
then subjected to reflux for an hour. After which, it was then cooled to room temperature. The
solution was then transferred into an Erlenmeyer flask. Small amounts of hexane were added to
rinse of remaining oil from the round bottom flask. It was then titrated with 0.5M HCl, using 1%
phenolphthalein as the indicator. Volume of KOH used was used to determine the saponification

number by using the eq. 2

In Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl Jacobs argues that many slaves were treated with extreme
punishment and inhumanly in the south. She shows that slaves were treated more similarly to
property than as workers or actual humans and the fear that they have because of it. This fueled
many believers of the antislavery to take action in the abolition of slavery. Throughout Incidents in

an odd conversation between two people sitting at a train station in Spain, having drinks while they

along with the setting and symbolism to paint a beautiful picture of an untruthful relationship and a
secretive Operation that brings out the true feelings between an unknown couple. The point of view
of this piece is told from the third person. Almost third person limited as we never get to hear the
actual thoughts of any of the characters, making both of them rather unreliable as we never will
know for certain the true intentions either one of them has. At the beginning of the story, the
conversationbetween these two people seems very strange. Each of them are speaking but it is clear
that neither are truly listening to what the other is saying making it obvious that each has
something much bigger on their mind that they know they must address but neither are yet
