Owl Woman Descriptive Writing
There was little time to wonder before a swift kick hammered into her temple. Blinding pain tore
through her body. Defensively, she curled up, wrapping her arms around her head. Tan tak kle ah
snatched Rory s arm and drug the screaming child into the cavern. Accustomed to the pitch dark, she
worked her way around the stalagmites toward the chasm. As she neared, orange glow at the bottom
erupted into a steaming geyser. No! Rory thought as sizzling droplets stung his face and bare arms. It s
going to throw me in there! His survival instincts kicked in. Pulling his feet up, he became a dead
weight. When the Owl Woman s grip slackened, Rory wiggled his hand and slipped from her grasp,
scurrying like a small frightened animal behind the nearest ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Temporarily sightless, the Owl Woman, with one hand shielding her eyes, struggled to drag Rory
around the final stalagmite. A series of blurry images rushed through Fianna s mind like the rapidly
turning pages of an old flip book, ending with the slow motion vision of Rory disappearing in the
orange mist of the abyss. She dove for the woman s legs, executing a tackle that would have awed the
triplets. Go! shouted Mac to his terrified baby brother. Wait at the opening. We ll be right there.
Steamy air soaked Fianna s clothes as she and Tan tak kle ah tussled their way closer to the brink. A
mere foot from the collapsing lip, Fianna sunk her knee into the Owl Woman s groin, freeing herself
and crawling away. With her nose and mouth filled with dust, she struggled to her feet, coughing and
wheezing. Disoriented by the light, but astonishingly agile, the Owl Woman also stood, her back to
Fianna. She lifted her feathered arms as if she were going to take flight and emitted a shrill wail that

Factors Influencing The Collaboration Of The New Testament
LIBERTY UNIVERSITY FACTORS INFLUENCING THE COLLABORATION OF THE NEW
TESTAMENT By Daniel Surmi CHHI 520 05 October, 2014 INTRODUCTION This paper will
examine the internal and external factors which spurred and led to the well known theologian
Athanasius proposing the now existing New Testament books of the Holy Scriptures. The internal
factors that will be examined in this paper include: Docetism, Judaism, Gnosticism, Marcionism,
Montanism, and Apollinarianism. Secondly this paper will view how the false prophets influenced not
only the doctrine of Christ but sought to take advantage of the Church s generous heart for personal
profit and gain. The external factors this paper will evaluate are: the persecution of the church and the
influence of pagan cultures surrounding the Christian Gentiles. The events and topics covered will be
from the 1st to 3rd century AD. Lastly this paper will look at the churches response to these factors as
they will create an authoritative list of writings in which Christians can rest on and use as a foundation
for their belief in Christ. All information and data in this paper is gathered from peer reviewed,
published journals and vetted educational websites. TABLE OF CONTENTS INTERNAL

Media Gender Roles
Is our belief influenced by the Media
We are living in a world where your identity is influenced by the media. Media is involved in our daily
lives. Media has represented on what people think about topics, one of the most common ones is
gender roles. Media indicated their messages into our consciousness at every opportunity that it had.
Gender roles are a set of norms dictating the personality and actions of people based on their
biological sex or what they identify. Gender roles in media are used in delirious stereotypes can cause
self image in young adults, causing loss of confidence, mostly in women. Many authors had expressed
their opinion about gender roles in media through non fiction articles. For instance, Katty Kay and
Claire Shipman, who wrote, The Confidence Gap, confronts the lack of woman s confidence
impacting their performance. Another example is given by Cordelia Fine, who wrote, Why Toys so
Gendered? in which she says that gendered toy marketing doesn t create gender stereotype, but it
reinforces them. Lastly, Allison Lantagne, who wrote, Gender roles in Media, says that is up to the
individual to decide what type of role they are going to adopt. She also includes that media reinforces
social norms because the public accepts them. I agree with Allison Lantagne says that the media has
an influence on our beliefs and attitudes toward gender because of its perfected image of genders,
projects what a woman and a male should do, and what abilities each

How Did The British Influence On American Culture
The transformation of administration architecture during independence and colonization
Politics has always been closely related to the transformations of architecture styles. The transition of
one region s political dynamics will certainly influence the exterior forms and the structural
connotations of the symbolic buildings. Different kind of political changes will also result different
kind of architectural stylistic shift. The independence of Turkey as a new nation and the colonization
of India by the British empire reflected the influence of political changes in architecture and how new
architecture style is introduced during such periods.
The independence of Turkey and its early development as a country full of energetic youth required a
combination of two almost contradictory ideals : In order to illustrate its disassociation with the past
Ottoman authority the new government desired international style which expresses scientific
modernization and political liberation; However, the Kemalists also wanted to preserve a certain
degree of cultural root in order to boost, if not, maintain nationalistic devotion of its citizens.
Consequently, a new hybridization of theses two ideals emerged ... Show more content on

After claiming India, the British who are influenced by the orientalism perceived the mysterious
Eastern culture as intellectually inferior. As a result, the western colonizers often consider the Eastern
culture unable to advance on their own and therefore must be governed by a more sophisticated
society. The political authority was taken by the British administration because of the western s
technology and gunnery, and rules were implemented without the affirmation of the native population.
Consequently, a new architecture style was introduced and the administration buildings during the
colonial age reflect the colonizer s intention to glorify the

Rhetorical Questions For The Crucible
877: #1, 3 6
1. One phrase in Act Three that made a strong impression on me is said by John Proctor. On page 870,
Proctor says, There might also be a dragon with five legs in my house, but no one has ever seen it. I
found this interesting because it shows how foolish the people are to believe that Elizabeth Proctor is a
witch. The court accuses Elizabeth for keeping a poppet to use it to harm Abigail. Parris claims that
even though nobody has seen poppets in the Proctor household, Elizabeth could still have hidden
them. John Proctor replies with a rhetorical question that shows Parris s accusation as irrational.
3. I think Giles Corey provides comic relief in The Crucible through his dialogue. For example, Corey
says A fart on Thomas Putnam, that is what I say to that! (867). The use of the word fart in a
courtroom setting provides comic relief. Another example is when Corey brings unwanted attention to
his wife. He attempts to defend her from the lies she is being accused from and says that she were
readin books. Instead of clearing her name, this statement mystifies Danforth. ... Show more content

When Hale asks if every defense is an attack upon the court, he means that every defense isn t being
heard, without bias, because everyone is trying to avoid being accused as or involved with a witch.
Parris claims that Proctor s list of witnesses is an attack upon the court because he does not want the
defense to be taken by Danforth. By the end of the act, Hale has realized how absurd the witch
accusations are. At the beginning of The Crucible, Hale was summoned to examine Betty. Hale came
off as an intelligent and eager to do so. As Hale observes false accusations being made against the
townspeople, he comes to realize that the witch hunt is

Corruption In The Catholic Church
During the time of corruption in the Catholic Church, Protestantism was growing because of the
influences of politics, corruption within the Catholic Church, and Renaissance ideas. Many Catholics
were unhappy with the Catholic Church because of all the corruption in the church, and they wanted
reformation. The Catholic Church wouldn t be able to stop the growth of Protestantism. One of the
reasons Protestantism spread was because of the influence of politics, such as support from princes
and the Treaty of Augsburg. When Luther began to break from the Catholic Church, He called upon
the German princes to overthrow the papacy in Germany and establish a reformed German church.
(438) This is the reason the German princes started to support the spread of Protestantism. The rulers
of Germany were motivated by any religious feeling which made them take control of the churches in
their territory. This made the princes/rulers have the last say in any decisions not the Pope. Religious
warfare in Germany ended with the Treaty of Augsburg. The Treaty of Augsburg in 1555 brought
along change in Protestantism, it made ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Martin Luther made these problems obvious when he nailed his 95 theses to the church doors. In
Luther s 95 theses, he attacked the selling and buying of indulgences, absenteeism, simony, and
pluralism. All of the problems lead to corruption, and the corruption lead to people changing over to
Protestantism. The Protestant teaching was justification by faith alone, salvation comes only through
faith in Christ not good works. Buying a slip of paper is not the way to get into Heaven. There was
corruption with the Popes in the 1520 s. The Popes were spending too much money on Renaissance
Art and Architecture to make the church look good. They were too concerned with Italian politics.
People were not happy and they wanted to

Prokaryotes Vs Eukaryotes Essay
In the replication process of DNA, there are similarities between the process of replication of a
Eukaryote cell and Prokaryote cell. There are also differences in both processes. The most notable
difference would have to start with the cell themselves, which may add to additional differences in the
processes. A prokaryote is a more simplistic cell with less DNA and a Eukaryote cell is much more
complex with vast amounts of DNA.
The replication process in the end has the same goal and that is to copy DNA and pass it along to a
new cell. The processes begin in a similar fashion, which is the DNA is unwound by an enzyme
known as DNA helicase (Boundless, 2016). Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes both employ the polymerases
to synthesis DNA. In both cases the replication begins within the cell wall or cell membrane. The
processes of replicating the DNA into a new cell occurs with the aid of leading strands and lagging
strands (Bank, E., 2016). A leading and lagging strand uses RNA prime that inserts the first genetic
code that is completed by a subsequent lagging strand, Okazaki fragment.
The differences between the two replications are abundant. Although the replication occurs within the
cell wall for the two processes they both occur in different locations. The prokaryote replication
occurs in cytoplasm. It also is destined to occur in that one location ... Show more content on

The speed at which replication occurs is speedy but the decrease in speed for Eukaryote cells may go
hand and hand with the complexity of the organism. The margin for error to complete multiple
processes with billions of lines of DNA would presumably be higher with increased speed. It may also
be true that having multiple points of origin could be more accurate at inserting code in the correct
position. Lastly, the end of a chromosome and the shortening of the chromosome may help to relieve
the world of people who have experienced everything and know

The Ethics Of Computer Forensics
In a world where technology is increasingly becoming the way of life, it was only a matter of time
before crime was no longer just in the streets but happening online as well. Criminals now get a new
approach to carry out their crimes with the use of computers. Since technology is more like a murder
mystery than catching the bad guy in the act, a new discipline of forensics needed to be put into place.
This is known as computer forensics. Forensic science is any science used for the purpose of law. In
the case of computer forensics it is the discipline that combines elements of law and computer science
to collect and analyze data from computer systems, networks, wireless communications, and storage
devices in a way that is admissible as evidence in a court of law (U.S. Cert, 2008). Meaning if you do
something illegal on the Internet it can be found. Since the widespread use of computers, computer
crime has caused an increase in computer investigations during the twenty first century. Some reasons
for investigation include: identity theft, such as stolen social security and credit card numbers, to find
evidence of a cheating spouse, to investigate hackers on a computer system, to find evidence of child
pornography, and much more.
History of Computer Forensics
The 1970s were when military investigators first started finding instances of computer related criminal
activity and needed a more comprehensive approach for solving these technical crimes. These first

Social media marketing
Social Media Marketing: An Overview
The first aim of any business is to be known amongst their target audience. This is no different for
online businesses that strive to shine out amidst billions of sites. Online businesses aim to market their
site in several different manners to gain them more customers and business. One such marketing
technique is social media marketing.
Social media marketing is a term that defines marketing that is done via social networks, such as
online communities, networks, blogs and many other marketing tools to raise awareness amongst their
potential clients. These sites are used to publicize, make sales, create connections between the

Social media marketing is one such great change that many companies have started to accept in a big
way. Though, it is still in a nascent stage but canny marketing strategists are already harping onto the
next big marketing revolution taking place in form of social media marketing. The concept of social
media marketing basically refers to the process of promoting business or websites through social
media channels. It is a powerful marketing medium that is defining the way people are
communicating. It is one of the significantly low cost promotional methods that provide businesses
large numbers of links and huge amount of traffic. Companies manage to get massive attention and
that really works in favor of the business. Social media marketing is a potent method applied by
progressive companies for selling their products/services or for just publishing content for ad revenue.
Social media is an extremely useful tool using which companies can get their information, product
descriptions, promotions all ingrained in the chain of networking world. Considering the newness of
this marketing method, organizations are coming up with innovative ways to develop their marketing
plans. New platforms are being created to approach potential clients. A large number of business
organizations are allocating budget for online business development using social media

Chris Ofili The Holy Virgin Mary
The above quotes are used to describe Chris Ofili s most controversial painting, The Holy Virgin
Mary. Artists throughout time have often pushed the boundaries of artistic expression. Some have
been criticized and questioned from viewers if what they are making is truly art. Ofili is one of the
numerous artists who have created debatable paintings and received hate in return.
One of the many individuals who were in an uproar about Ofili s painting was the mayor of New York
City, Rudolph Giuliani. When he first saw the exhibit, Sensation, which included Ofili s painting, he
saw the unusual depiction of the Virgin Mary and was instantly appalled and disgusted. Giuliani

In addition to the decorated excrement, the entire painting is supported by two varnished balls of
dung. They are also decorated with tiny pins that spell out the words Virgin on one and Mary on the
other. Spectators often see the elephant dung and are instantly appalled and disgusted. At first glance
the viewers might think that droppings were splattered, or smeared, unthoughtfully over a holy icon.
However, instead of unintentionally and carelessly thrown onto the canvas, Ofili deliberately placed
the varnished dung onto the painting to represent the bare breast. The simple nature of propping the
portraiture up off the ground with two little balls of dung gives it a feeling that [it has] come from the
earth rather than simply being hung on a wall (Vogel). Even though some viewers might think that
using a normally foul item as a collage element is blasphemous to the holy image of Mary, in the
African culture it is sacred (Sooke). Ofili was inspired to incorporate elephant dung in his art due to a
safari trip in Zimbabwe. Scattered around the Zambezian ground, Ofili took interest in the sacred
African element and even brought some of samples of it home to use in his work. He started to
experiment with using the excrement in some of his earlier paintings and had success. Ofili said that
using the droppings attract a multiple of meanings and

Accounting System And The Roman Empire
Another Society with their own intricate accounting system was the Roman Empire. This comes as no
surprise because of the scope and size of the Roman Empire; accounting was once again a necessity to
a well maintained society. There is evidence of comprehensive financial statements in the rule of
Emperor Augustus circa 63 BC 14 AD. These statements included information on expenses on
statistics concerning the provinces and dependent kingdoms; direct and indirect taxation; as well as
recurrent expenditures and gifts , as well as, the amounts of cash in the Aerarium...and in the hands of
the publicani (Oldroyd, The Role... , 1995). The Aerarium was the treasury, and the publicani was the
public. These are similar to what the Chinese had because they were used by the government to go
about completing the financing and running of the empire. These figures could be used to make it
easier to track all the expenses and revenues of the government. The government was not the only
ones to keep accounting records in the Roman Empire either. Account books were kept by those look
to maintain and achieve citizenship. It is believed that men of property at Rome often did write up
their permanent account books about every month. They were required to do this to maintain their
citizenship because citizenship was tied to the amount of property owned and this meant a need to
keep records of it. (Oldroyd, The Role... , 1995). As well as citizens, accounting was a necessity for

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Plate Fin Heat Exchanger
b) Counter Flow
In a counter flow heat exchanger the two fluids flow parallel to each other but in opposite directions.
The counter flow heat exchanger provides the most thermally effective arrangement for recovery of
heat or cold from process streams. A counter flow arrangement is thermodynamically superior to any
other flow arrangement. It is the most efficient flow arrangement, producing the highest temperature
change in each fluid compared to any other two fluid arrangement for a given overall thermal
conductance (UA), fluid flow rates and fluid inlet temperatures. Cryogenic refrigeration and
liquefaction equipment use this geometry almost exclusively. But this type of heat exchangers

c) Difficulty of repair in case of failure or leakage between passages.
1.6 Applications The plate fin heat exchanger is suitable for use over a wide range of temperatures and
pressures for gas gas, gas liquid and multi phase duties. They are used in a variety of applications.
They are mainly employed in the field of cryogenics for cryogenic separation and liquefaction of air,
natural gas processing and liquefaction, production of petrochemicals and large refrigeration systems.
The exchangers that are used for cryogenic air separation and LPG fractionation are the largest and
most complex units of the plate fin type and a single unit could be of several meters in length. Brazed
aluminum plate fin exchangers are widely used in the aerospace industries because of their low weight
to volume ratio and compactness. They are being used mainly in environment control system of the
aircraft, avionics and hydraulic oil cooling and fuel heating. Making heat exchangers as compact as
possible has been an everlasting demand in automobile and air conditioning industries as both are
space conscious. In the automobile sector they are used for making the radiators. The other

Communication between Morton Thiokol (the company that designed the Solid Rocket Boosters)

customer intimidation (Boisjoly 1). Obviously, this was not a conducive environment to creating an
atmosphere where everyone was comfortable expressing their opinions and making thoughtful

For some of the parents in the study, they struggled with their child s physical or emotional delay and
in essence felt a sense of sorrow when it came to their child. The providers were viewed as their hope
for their child. In the study, there were also a few families who faced several emotional needs.
The families were not the only ones to face emotional needs. Early intervention specialists also
demonstrated a sense of urgency in helping the child not only overcome the delay but also prevent
further delays. Many of these providers also had a feeling of stress due to their case overloads.
Providers also experienced emotional distress with the families who had more complex emotional
needs and thus felt inadequate to help them. Furthermore, providers who entered homes which were
different from their own, also felt emotional discomfort. (Brotherson et al., 2010)
The first partnership pattern between the families and their providers identified was one in which both
the family s needs and the provider s needs were met. (Brotherson et al., 2010) This partnership was a
match in where both the provider and the family shared the same emotional need. They both felt a
sense of urgency to help the child and intern worked together to aid the child s progression. The
sessions were child focused. The parent was focused on her child s progression and participated
during the home visits. Meeting the family s emotional need of urgency

It was exactly a month after my 12th birthday when my parents moved me and my younger siblings to

actual house close enough to their office in New York and Princeton, I was quick to make it my home.
For my sibling and I the VYV was heaven. It had a huge playground, an indoor pool and a game
room. The VYV was also amazing for my parents because it was a gated entry building so it was

Theory Of Games And Economic Behaviour
Although rationality provides the foundation for behavioural decision theory, current findings suggest
that heuristics and biases have a significant impact on individual decision making. Rationality can
only go so far in explaining individual decision making.
A large part of early research into decision theory was based on the economic or normative approach,
which tries to predict the actions of a so called rational decision maker . Although Bernoulli (1738)
was the first to introduce the concept of utility into decision making, it was Von Neumann and
Morgenstern s book, Theory of Games and Economic Behaviour which revolutionised the idea of a
rational decision process. Von Neumann and Morgenstern (1947) explicitly outlined the ... Show more

In contrast, EU theory suggests people have different attitudes toward risk some would be risk averse
and prefer the guaranteed payment, even though the expected value is lower, while others would
choose the riskier bet. However, EU Theory and the normative approach to decision making are not
without criticisms. As with every mathematical model, EU theory is a simplified representation of
reality and does not guarantee reliable predictions of human behaviour. Indeed, empirical evidence
suggests the existence of systematic deviations from rationality. As Dawes (1988) wrote, People,
groups, organizations, and governments make choices. Sometimes the consequences of their decisions
are desirable, sometimes not (p. 2). Hence it can be argued that decision making is not purely rational
(where rationality is defined as the decision predicted by EU Theory).
In in attempt to create a more psychologically accurate description of decision making, Kahneman and
Tversky (1979) developed Prospect Theory, which theorized that individuals have different
perceptions when considering losses versus gains. In contrast to EU Theory, which suggests we make
decisions that maximise our utility, research by Kahneman and Tversky (1979) found that information
is not processed in such a rational way. For example, according to EU Theory, the amount of utility
gained by receiving $200 should be equal to receiving $300 and losing $100 as in both situations

Sheep Vs Market Sheep Essay
Breeding Sheep vs. Market Sheep
Iowa is home to approximately 175,000 sheep ( Iowa Sheep Industry Association n. pag.). Our large
sheep population means that we are ranked tenth in the nation for all sheep and lambs. With those
statistics in mind, it is important to have knowledge about this part of our agricultural industry in
Iowa. Sheep are raised to either breed or sell. Breeding sheep and market sheep are raised in similar
ways, but as with most, they do vary. Breeding and market sheep have four main independent
qualities.
An obvious difference between breeding and market sheep is their anatomy. Male breeding sheep are
called rams. A ram is a male sheep that was not castrated therefore still has his testicles. Testicles are

Breeding sheep are raised for reproduction. The ram and ewes are usually penned together from
September through early November. In this time frame, the hope is that each ewe will cycle and get
bred by the ram. One ram can breed multiple ewes in the same time frame. When the ewes are bred,
they have a five month gestation period. As a result of the breeding time, lambing season ranges from
February to April. Market sheep are born from breeding sheep. The owner may have decided that they
would not need another ram or ewe for the next year s sheep herd. Market sheep are raised to be sold
when they have reached their prime. Local market sheep are frequently sold in late August. At this
time, the wethers and ewes weigh anywhere from 130 to 170 pounds. Sheep are most commonly
purchased by the pound. In recent years, market sheep have sold for around one dollar and fifty cents
per pound. Buyers either choose to continue feeding the sheep for a while longer, or take it to a place
to be turned into meat. Farmers raise sheep with specific end goals in mind which determine if their

The Pronounced Regression of Today s Society Essay
A refreshed mind is a creative and productive one, is a quote written by Kathy Bell, in her book
Regression (Bell). In a society that is continuing to regress to the ways of previous historical times,
does it make you think that maybe no one is working to keep their mind refreshed and allow our
society to grow as opposed to it going backwards? Particular aspects of our society are regressing to
ways that can be compared to those of the Paleolithic period, including the way our society s gender
roles are portrayed, our ideology and how we treat people, and being civilized. We are reverting to
women being the homebodies and taking care of their children and given high expectations, and men
being the one in charge. Today s society, like the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is near impossible to walk through a store and not see a female dressed suggestively posed on a
magazine or in an ad to sell any kind of product. Women are also subjected to be at home taking care
of the house and children and any needs that their husband may have at any given time. It is plastered
unashamedly on any available form of advertisement, whether it be for a diet pill, gym, clothing line,
etc., for a woman to look, act, and feel a certain way. Females as an entirety, are supposed to be in
shape, happy at all times to meet any and all needs, look like a runway model, and have all of our
ducks in a row. This is similar to how the Paleolithic people wanted women to look like the statuettes
and to be gatherers, serving their husband, children, and other family members that they may have had
(Anitei). Essentially, modern day society is reverting it s ideals to those of the Paleolithic people: to
separate ourselves into groups and to view women as sex objects and servants for their family. Next,
our ideology and treatment of others has somewhat regressed to the ways of the Old Stone Age. The
Paleolithic people worshiped a Mother Goddess that was similar to a mother nature genre of belief
(Cunningham). The Mother Goddess represented female power and it s role of rebirth and life
(Cunningham). Throughout history, society has drawn away from female goddesses and towards male

Strike at San Fransisco State College Essay
Strike at San Fransisco State College
In the meantime at San Francisco State College, students in the Third World Liberation Front (TWLF),
a coalition of African American, Latino, and Asian American student groups, began demanding
reforms that addressed the concerns of students of color and the surrounding community. After more
than a year of negotiating with the school and organizing students, they called a strike on November 6,
1968, that became the longest student strikein United States history. When it was finally settled in
March 1969, many of the students demands were met, including the establishment of a School of
Ethnic Studies.

Hayakawa, one of the few faculty members willing to go back to work, felt it was his duty to cross the
picket line and continue the education of the students who desired it. He believed the faculty had
forgotten their primary mission teaching, conducting research, and pursuing academic excellence.
On November 28, 1968, Hayakawa was named acting president of San Francisco State College by
California Governor Ronald Reagan and the trustees of the California state college system. With no
previous administrative or political experience, his selection was an unpopular choice among faculty
members and students. Prior to his appointment, Hayakawa had served on a five person presidential
selection committee whose members had reportedly agreed not to seek the office. Hayakawa denied
any agreement had been made and accepted the job under extreme opprobrium from committee
members. Hayakawa was viewed as eccentric in appearance and style. Wearing Hawaiian carnation
leis and an Irish tam o shanter, his personal appearance was indicative of his personality.
His first priority as acting president was to reopen the campus following Thanksgiving break ending
the strike. To achieve this objective, he yielded on some student demands and rejected others. This,
however, was unsatisfactory to student leaders, who employed 1,000 protesters to close the campus on
the first day following from Thanksgiving break. Taking a firm stance,

Shirley Jackson s The Lottery
The Lottery by Shirley Jackson is an extremely captivating and terrifying story. The author of Jackson
s The Lottery describes Shirley Jackson s short story perfectly, It is a grim, even nihilistic, parable of
the evil inherent in human nature (Coulthard 226). The Lottery creates an immensely eerie story by
using the setting of a small town, the nonchalant attitude of the community, and the tone of the author.
The size and remoteness of the village really brings the creepiness of the story together. It makes the
reader believe that this story could most definitely be nonfiction. The town has a population of only
three hundred, and, based on Brito s film The Lottery it is in a desert (Jackson 312). This only adds to

eeriness of The Lottery. They are more worried about getting back to work than The Lottery. During

Throughout the subtle chaos the people of the village begins to call her a sore loser, and it creates a

Levi Strauss And The Black Jeans
Denim has been a part of American culture for more than 100 years, and is common all over the
world. It has developed over the years and has become a central part of most people s wardrobes.
Denim went beyond just the pair of blue jeans and is used to make shirts and jackets, increasing its
value as a fabric. I strongly believe that there are very few articles of clothing that are as versatile and
easy to wear as a pair of jeans. With that said, I feel that jeans will be a staple in fashion for both men
and women for many years to come. The origins of denim come from a man named Levi Strauss, who
saw a need for type of pants that would last longer. The jeans would mostly be used for laborers
during the Gold Rush in the late 1800s. So, on May 20, 1873, Levi Strauss and his financial partner
Jacob Davis created the blue jeans (Our Story). His brand, Levi Strauss and Co., also known as simply
Levi s has become one of the most well known denim brands in America. Little did Levi Strauss
know, but he would be the catalyst for one the most iconic and durable garments of clothing to date. It
wasn t until the 1930s that denim became an item that was worn in everyday life rather just a pant to
wear while working. In the 30s there were many Western movies with cowboys wearing denim jeans,
which became very popular for Americans (History). In the 1940s, during World War 2, the denim
overall was introduced and was worn by off duty soldiers (History). This was the time that brands like

A Pretty How Town
At one point or another in one s lifetime, people let go one thing to try and move on to something
bigger and better, whether it s a new job or new way of life. In its entirety, modernism is similar. It can
be defined as moving away from the traditional creations and activities towards news tasks formed by
the individualism and freedom within a man or woman. For instance, in the poem One Art by
Elizabeth Bishop, the speaker eventually moves on from his previous set of ideas to something new.
Similarly, in anyone lived in a pretty how town by E.E. Cummings, the main character doesn t feel

unlike before. The poem also discussed an imaginary love story as it relates to the author, Sylvia Plath,

all these poems from modernism, love and death seem to stand out as two big reoccurring themes.

Disadvantages Of CHO Cells
CHO (Chinese Hamster Ovary) cells are cell lines extracted from the ovary of the Chinese Hamster
and are exclusively used for commercial purposes in the production of recombinant therapeutic
proteins. Some proteins are to be synthesized using mammalian cells rather than the commonly used
microbial cells as the latter lacks the exact machinery to produce the complete protein or for safety
concerns. Among the mammalian cells, CHO cells continue to be the choice for the production of
several therapeutic proteins.
However there are certain disadvantages associated with CHO cells which include low productivity,
substrate product stability, slower growth rate, low cell density, etc. These cell lines consume nutrients
continuously beyond stoichiometric needs. Thus, the mode of operation should be chosen in such a
way that they overcome the disadvantages of the CHO cell line.
The large scale production of therapeutic proteins in industries is done in suspension culture as the
adherent cell line poses a challenge in scaling up. Currently there are two dominant modes of
operation for producing therapeutic proteins based on mammalian cell lines (Hu and Aunins, 1997) in
industrial scale:

The principles of Persuasion Everyday, we also find a challenge of persuading other to do what we

we persuade others is not only an art, but also a science. A research has been studied to find out the
method to convince people effectively. In the video Secerct from the science of persuasion by Robert

join with them to reach their mutual goals. When we show that we like the person, they will like us in
return, you will do something like him they want or ask you. People buy things from the people they
know like friends, and the people the respect. In this video, the author defines the weapon is liking, I

our kindness or honesty. In the race of being a president, candidates strive to be liked to receive more

Post Famine Research Paper
Famines have different demographic consequences. One is the increased number of resettlement and
displaced people, as famine victims search for food and other necessities (Kidane, 1989). Migration
poses a big threat on health and social structures, as people forcibly or wilfully search for survival.
Another demographic consequence is inevitably seen in the decrease of population. Mortality rates
peak during and after the famine, as people are still physically weak. However, post famine, fertility
rate will increase as families wish to have more children in insurance against future risk (Kidane,
1989).

Malnutrition continues to be ever present, leaving many communities relying on aid. Population
grows, but food production cannot keep up with the demand as there is no adequate development in
agriculture. Fig. 3 shows that while there has been a population growth of more than 20 million in
Ethiopia between 1992 and 2009, the number of malnourished people had decreased only by little.
How could the continuous problems of malnourishment be resolved or minimized? What communities
need is well developed coping systems on the local level. Humanitarian organisations should be
focusing on providing sustainable means locally, thus when drought occurs, locals have better ways of
coping. Markets have to regulated, thus, prices need to be fixed so that poor people can also afford to
buy grains.
Food production in Africa has to be improved dramatically. There is a food deficit as agricultural
development has not reached its full potential yet. African farmers today use almost no fertilizer and
only 4 percent of their cropland has been irrigated (Paarlberg, 2010). African governments should take
on the role of investing into the development of agriculture in the region. It is surprising that while 60
percent of the population depends on the farming sector, the government only invests 5 percent of its
budget on agriculture (Paarlberg,

Compare And Contrast Paracetamol And Aspirin
Compare and contrast the mechanism of action and therapeutic uses of aspirin and paracetamol
Aspirin, also known as acetylsalicylic acid, was among the earliest drugs to be synthesized and is still
commonly used worldwide today. Aspirin is useful as an anti pyretic, anti platelet, analgesic, as well
as, anti inflammatory drugs. Its main clinical importance now is in the treatment of cardiovascular
disease. It can be orally administered and is rapidly absorbed as the liver metabolizes 75%, but can t
be given to human beings under the age of 16. The elimination of aspirins metabolite, salicylate,

By inhibiting the COX enzyme it controls pain by controlling the signals before they reach the brain.
The analgesic mechanism of paracetamol has been suggested that the metabolites of paracetamol such
as NAPQI, which act on TRPA1 receptors in the spinal cord, suppress the signal transduction from the
superficial layers of the dorsal horn, therefore alleviating pain.
The exact mechanisms by which COX is inhibited in various circumstances are still being discussed
and this is because of the differences in activity of aspirin, paracetamol and other NSAIDs. With these
differences it has been proposed that further COX enzymes may exist. A theory of how paracetamol
may work is by the inhibition of the COX 3 isoform (a COX 1 splice variant). COX 3 has been
expressed in dogs and it shows that this enzyme shares similarities to other COX enzymes, while
producing pro inflammatory chemicals and is selectively inhibited by paracetamol. But research has
continued and in humans the COX 3 enzyme doesn t show inflammatory action and paracetamols

Ever since this kid was in second grade, he always wanted to be in band. I was there when he heard

Analysis Of A Tribute To Neil Armstrong By Terrell Martin
That s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind. In the year 1969 was the first moon
landing and the people touching the surface were from the U.S., astronauts Michael Collins, Edwin E.
(Buzz) Aldrin, Jr., and Neil A. Armstrong, Neil was THE first human to touch the moon s surface. A
Tribute to Neil Alden Armstrong ,written by Terrell Martin, was a poem about the first landing on the
moon, and what different people s opinions were on it. The poem called Neil Armstrong by me, is
about not only just the landing on the moon but also the internal journey there and back, for Neil, and
what I think he would feel during the experience. The Apollo 11 Mission greatly affected the U.S. and
all the citizens in it.

One of the quotes that was my favorite was on, the 26th line Savoring every last bit of it. . I found that
line interesting because he is doing this (risking his life) for the good of his country. This line shows
the emotion that he is most likely proud but also concerned at the same time, because he is proud to be
the bravest, first person on the moon, but is also concerned for his life because it is at stake. Another
quote is pulled from this poem was on line 6 it was dark . This line was intriguing because it means
that one, space is dark and you can t really see anything, which is like the Apollo 11 mission where all
of the scientists and engineers didn t know exactly what was going to occur, so it was cloudy or dark .
One piece of literature that i found interesting was on stanza 1 line 4, Something no man can erase . I
thought it was interesting because for one, it is an example of hyperbole but at the same time it is
personification. The quote can be personification because the mark that neil armstrong made was not
something you can touch, more or less erase. It could also be a hyperbole because if it were something
that can be erased then it states No man . The quote on line 4 5 on stanza 2 states He spoke, like he
was the only one, the only man on the planet, . This line is a simile and is comparing the silence of
space to being completely alone on the planet. The main theme I tried to communicate was awareness,
I chose this theme because all of america should be aware of this topic and in my poem era there is a
country who is completely aware of the situation that happened and they are

Energy Drinks And Athletic Performance
Introduction
Energy drinks, are beverages that contain large doses of sugar (up to a quarter cup per can), caffeine
and other ingredients, like the stimulatory herb Guarana and the amino acid Taurine. Dr. Erin Duchan,
a pediatrician and co author of a review of the current science about energy drinks for athletes,

ergogenic (substance used for the purpose of enhancing performance) and it can, in the right
circumstances, improve athletic performance. (Duchan, 2014)
The aim of this investigation is to see whether Mother energy drinks increase athletic performance.
The hypothesis that will be tested is that If a person consumes an energy drink they will run further in

The independent variable is the Energy drink and the dependent variable is the athletic performance
how long someone can run the beep test until they can no longer run. In this investigation there are
various factors that need to be kept constant in order to achieve the best results, these include the
environment the place it is performed e.g. if one is performed on a tennis court the second one will
need to be performed on a tennis court, the weather conditions should be similar, the energy drink type

illustrate the subjective impact of war on an innocent twenty year old. The personification of
surrendering our individual personalities more completely than we would ever have believed possible
shows that war takes away all parts of an individual s personality and makes them appear like an
object in the frontline of warfare. The soldiers became confused of what they were throughout the
book we are forlorn like children, and experienced like old men, we are crude and sorrowful and
superficial I believe we are lost the metaphor used portrays the message of the soldiers feeling
misplaced in the world as they looked like children, but they acted like old men. The soldiers lost their
youth and their identities through the brutality of

African Countries, Sierra Leon And Ghana
I have chosen to dissect two West African countries, Sierra Leon and Ghana, along with Peru located
in South America and lastly the United States located in North America. Sierra Leon is a British
established colony founded in 1787 for slaves returning to Africa from Great Britain and also the
United States, its primary language is Krio spoken by 97% of citizens. Sierra Leone became an
independent country within the Commonwealth of Nations on April 27 of 1961 and Freetown was
deemed the capital city. Sierra Leone holds a population of 6,453,184 and population density of 89.4
per square kilometer. In spite that this country is very poor it still suffers the consequences of the Civil
war. Yet its mineral, farming and angling assets still ensures potential for monetary future
developments. Earnest Bai Koroma is the current President of Sierra Leon. Earnest Bai Koroma is a
graduate from the oldest University in West Africa, Fourth Bay College class of 1976, born October 2
1953. Sierra Leon Presidential term limit consists of a maximum of 2 five year term limits. Earnest
BK is now serving his 2nd term as of 2007. During Earnest Bai Presidency Sierra Leonean faced
detrimental governmental issues, commanded by the Ebola epidemic in West Africa in 2014. As the
nation experienced the most exceedingly sicknesses ever. The President was condemned for the
Government slow reaction and for the outrageous measures it took, for example, shutting down the
whole nation to check the spread

Kants On Crimina Carnis By Immanuel Kant
Crimina Carnis Serious violations of our duty towards ourselves produce an aversion accompanied
either by horror or by disgust; suicide is of the horrible, Crimina Carnis of the disgusting (Kant, 300).
In the philosophical argument pertaining to suicide entitled Suicide and Duty by Immanuel Kant, Kant
defines and argues the immorality of suicide. Labelling suicide a kind of Crimina Carnis (300)
Crimina of/pertaining to a crime (Latin Dict.) and Carnis which is related to the flesh, Kant avows that
every living thing even an injured tree in nature seeks some sort of preservation (300); thus deeming
suicide immoral. In relation to suicide, Kant argues that instead of focusing on the aspect of a human
being sacrificing their

Research Paper On Drugs In Sports
Drugs Taking its Toll
Lebron James once stated, but sports carried me away from being in a gang, or being associated with
drugs. Sports was my way out (Pilon). The access to drugs in today s world is becoming easier and
easier. Studies show numerous athletes from other countries travel to the United States to buy
stimulants that are illegal in their countries, to be used in competitions(Scott). In addition, games are
supposed to be entertaining but how could they be when rules are broken and bad examples are
shown, all resulting in awful side effects.
Lots of people are in the stands cheering for the players, but are they cheering for their effort in the
game or their ability to cheat? Taking performance enhancing drugs will destroy ... Show more content

Sports is all about fun and talent, there should not be a reason to take the game to a degrading level,
show good sportsmanship by not cheating. It is good to show younger generations a proper example to
follow. Although these drugs are becoming easier to access does not mean they should be bought, but
it is a good idea to stay clear of them in case any symptoms begin to reveal themselves. It is great to
just show the world actual skill, than to do some pills and ruin the whole career and the future that is

The Importance Of Science
Science is an aspect of life and something which is identifiable in every student s lives as it is
continuously extended, refined and revised. In the text, Taking Science to School, there are five points
identifying why science should be taught science. The five reasons include 1. Science is a significant
part of human culture and represents the human thinking capacity, 2. It provides common experience
for development of language, logic, and problem solving skills to be used in the classroom, 3. A
demand for students to make it personal and community decisions about issues in which scientific
information plays a key role, 4. It will become a lifelong vocation, 5. The nation is reliant on the
technical and scientific abilities for citizens due to economic competitiveness and national needs
(Duschl et al, 2007, Page 34). The science curriculum should be focused and designed for students to
be able to understand and grasp the knowledge of the basic skills, which in turn will lead learning
efforts. Three dimensional learning is not only highlighting the facts of the content of science, but also
the doing of science (Willson et al, 2015, pg. 28). According to Seeing Students Learn Science (Beatty
et al, 2017) which include 1). practices through which scientist and engineers do their work; 2). the
crosscutting concepts that apply across science disciplines; and 3). the core ideas of the disciplines
(page 6). Scientific practices are focused towards asking questions, analyzing,

Comparing Crimson Tide And A Soldier s Story
The movies I am reviewing are Crimson Tide and A Soldier s Story. The main characters in Crimson
Tide are Captain Ramsay, played by Gene Hackman; and Lieutenant Commander Hunter, played by
Denzel Washington, Ramsay s executive officer. The main characters in A Soldier s Story are Captain
Davenport, played by Howard Rollins; and Sergeant Waters, played by Adolph Caesar. Ironically, in
this movie a young Denzel Washington played a prominent role as Private First Class Peterson. This
was before he became a household name. Arguably, this movie catapulted him into superstardom. This
paper will compare and contrast the leadership styles of Captain Ramsay and Sergeant Watters.
The scene in Crimson Tide was aboard a nuclear submarine called the USS Alabama. Facing threat of
a nuclear attack from a Russian submarine, Ramsay and Hunter found themselves locked in a power
struggle because Hunter refused Ramsay s orders to launch a preemptive nuclear strike pending
confirmation of an aborted emergency action message (EAM).
Hunter s insubordination led to a mutiny and a series of armed standoffs aboard the submarine
between those loyal to Hunter and those loyal to Ramsay. When the EAM the finally came through,
Hunter s insubordination turned out to avert nuclear war. Ramsey quietly conceded that Hunter was a
correct to suggest waiting on confirmation and recommended Hunter for his next promotion before a
disciplinary hearing.
The scene in A Soldier s Story was the Deep South during

  • 2. Owl Woman Descriptive Writing There was little time to wonder before a swift kick hammered into her temple. Blinding pain tore through her body. Defensively, she curled up, wrapping her arms around her head. Tan tak kle ah snatched Rory s arm and drug the screaming child into the cavern. Accustomed to the pitch dark, she worked her way around the stalagmites toward the chasm. As she neared, orange glow at the bottom erupted into a steaming geyser. No! Rory thought as sizzling droplets stung his face and bare arms. It s going to throw me in there! His survival instincts kicked in. Pulling his feet up, he became a dead weight. She dove for the woman s legs, executing a tackle that would have awed the triplets. Go! shouted Mac to his terrified baby brother. Wait at the opening. We ll be right there. Steamy air soaked Fianna s clothes as she and Tan tak kle ah tussled their way closer to the brink. A mere foot from the collapsing lip, Fianna sunk her knee into the Owl Woman s groin, freeing herself and crawling away. With her nose and mouth filled with dust, she struggled to her feet, coughing and wheezing. Disoriented by the light, but astonishingly agile, the Owl Woman also stood, her back to Fianna. • 3. Factors Influencing The Collaboration Of The New Testament LIBERTY UNIVERSITY FACTORS INFLUENCING THE COLLABORATION OF THE NEW TESTAMENT By Daniel Surmi CHHI 520 05 October, 2014 INTRODUCTION This paper will examine the internal and external factors which spurred and led to the well known theologian Athanasius proposing the now existing New Testament books of the Holy Scriptures. The internal factors that will be examined in this paper include: Docetism, Judaism, Gnosticism, Marcionism, Montanism, and Apollinarianism. Secondly this paper will view how the false prophets influenced not only the doctrine of Christ but sought to take advantage of the Church s generous heart for personal profit and gain. The external factors this paper will evaluate are: the persecution of the church and the influence of pagan cultures surrounding the Christian Gentiles. The events and topics covered will be from the 1st to 3rd century AD. Lastly this paper will look at the churches response to these factors as they will create an authoritative list of writings in which Christians can rest on and use as a foundation for their belief in Christ. All information and data in this paper is gathered from peer reviewed, published journals and vetted educational websites. Media has represented on what people think about topics, one of the most common ones is gender roles. Media indicated their messages into our consciousness at every opportunity that it had. Gender roles are a set of norms dictating the personality and actions of people based on their biological sex or what they identify. Gender roles in media are used in delirious stereotypes can cause self image in young adults, causing loss of confidence, mostly in women. Many authors had expressed their opinion about gender roles in media through non fiction articles. For instance, Katty Kay and Claire Shipman, who wrote, The Confidence Gap, confronts the lack of woman s confidence impacting their performance. Another example is given by Cordelia Fine, who wrote, Why Toys so Gendered? in which she says that gendered toy marketing doesn t create gender stereotype, but it reinforces them. Lastly, Allison Lantagne, who wrote, Gender roles in Media, says that is up to the individual to decide what type of role they are going to adopt. She also includes that media reinforces social norms because the public accepts them. I agree with Allison Lantagne says that the media has an influence on our beliefs and attitudes toward gender because of its perfected image of genders, projects what a woman and a male should do, and what abilities each ... • 5. How Did The British Influence On American Culture The transformation of administration architecture during independence and colonization Politics has always been closely related to the transformations of architecture styles. The transition of one region s political dynamics will certainly influence the exterior forms and the structural connotations of the symbolic buildings. Different kind of political changes will also result different kind of architectural stylistic shift. The independence of Turkey as a new nation and the colonization of India by the British empire reflected the influence of political changes in architecture and how new architecture style is introduced during such periods. The independence of Turkey and its early development as a country full of energetic youth required a combination of two almost contradictory ideals : In order to illustrate its disassociation with the past Ottoman authority the new government desired international style which expresses scientific modernization and political liberation; However, the Kemalists also wanted to preserve a certain degree of cultural root in order to boost, if not, maintain nationalistic devotion of its citizens. • 6. Rhetorical Questions For The Crucible 877: #1, 3 6 1. One phrase in Act Three that made a strong impression on me is said by John Proctor. On page 870, Proctor says, There might also be a dragon with five legs in my house, but no one has ever seen it. I found this interesting because it shows how foolish the people are to believe that Elizabeth Proctor is a witch. The court accuses Elizabeth for keeping a poppet to use it to harm Abigail. Parris claims that even though nobody has seen poppets in the Proctor household, Elizabeth could still have hidden them. John Proctor replies with a rhetorical question that shows Parris s accusation as irrational. 3. I think Giles Corey provides comic relief in The Crucible through his dialogue. For example, Corey says A fart on Thomas Putnam, that is what I say to that! (867). The use of the word fart in a courtroom setting provides comic relief. Another example is when Corey brings unwanted attention to his wife. He attempts to defend her from the lies she is being accused from and says that she were readin books. Instead of clearing her name, this statement mystifies Danforth. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By the end of the act, Hale has realized how absurd the witch accusations are. At the beginning of The Crucible, Hale was summoned to examine Betty. Corruption In The Catholic Church During the time of corruption in the Catholic Church, Protestantism was growing because of the influences of politics, corruption within the Catholic Church, and Renaissance ideas. Many Catholics were unhappy with the Catholic Church because of all the corruption in the church, and they wanted reformation. The Catholic Church wouldn t be able to stop the growth of Protestantism. One of the reasons Protestantism spread was because of the influence of politics, such as support from princes and the Treaty of Augsburg. When Luther began to break from the Catholic Church, He called upon the German princes to overthrow the papacy in Germany and establish a reformed German church. (438) This is the reason the German princes started to support the spread of Protestantism. The rulers of Germany were motivated by any religious feeling which made them take control of the churches in their territory. This made the princes/rulers have the last say in any decisions not the Pope. Religious warfare in Germany ended with the Treaty of Augsburg. • 8. Prokaryotes Vs Eukaryotes Essay In the replication process of DNA, there are similarities between the process of replication of a Eukaryote cell and Prokaryote cell. There are also differences in both processes. The most notable difference would have to start with the cell themselves, which may add to additional differences in the processes. A prokaryote is a more simplistic cell with less DNA and a Eukaryote cell is much more complex with vast amounts of DNA. The replication process in the end has the same goal and that is to copy DNA and pass it along to a new cell. The processes begin in a similar fashion, which is the DNA is unwound by an enzyme known as DNA helicase (Boundless, 2016). Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes both employ the polymerases to synthesis DNA. In both cases the replication begins within the cell wall or cell membrane. The processes of replicating the DNA into a new cell occurs with the aid of leading strands and lagging strands (Bank, E., 2016). A leading and lagging strand uses RNA prime that inserts the first genetic code that is completed by a subsequent lagging strand, Okazaki fragment. The differences between the two replications are abundant. Although the replication occurs within the cell wall for the two processes they both occur in different locations. The prokaryote replication occurs in cytoplasm. It also is destined to occur in that one location ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Ethics Of Computer Forensics In a world where technology is increasingly becoming the way of life, it was only a matter of time before crime was no longer just in the streets but happening online as well. Criminals now get a new approach to carry out their crimes with the use of computers. Since technology is more like a murder mystery than catching the bad guy in the act, a new discipline of forensics needed to be put into place. This is known as computer forensics. Forensic science is any science used for the purpose of law. In the case of computer forensics it is the discipline that combines elements of law and computer science to collect and analyze data from computer systems, networks, wireless communications, and storage devices in a way that is admissible as evidence in a court of law (U.S. Cert, 2008). Meaning if you do something illegal on the Internet it can be found. Since the widespread use of computers, computer crime has caused an increase in computer investigations during the twenty first century. Some reasons for investigation include: identity theft, such as stolen social security and credit card numbers, to find evidence of a cheating spouse, to investigate hackers on a computer system, to find evidence of child pornography, and much more. History of Computer Forensics The 1970s were when military investigators first started finding instances of computer related criminal activity and needed a more comprehensive approach for solving these technical crimes. One of the many individuals who were in an uproar about Ofili s painting was the mayor of New York City, Rudolph Giuliani. At first glance the viewers might think that droppings were splattered, or smeared, unthoughtfully over a holy icon. However, instead of unintentionally and carelessly thrown onto the canvas, Ofili deliberately placed the varnished dung onto the painting to represent the bare breast. The simple nature of propping the portraiture up off the ground with two little balls of dung gives it a feeling that [it has] come from the earth rather than simply being hung on a wall (Vogel). Even though some viewers might think that using a normally foul item as a collage element is blasphemous to the holy image of Mary, in the African culture it is sacred (Sooke). Ofili was inspired to incorporate elephant dung in his art due to a safari trip in Zimbabwe. Scattered around the Zambezian ground, Ofili took interest in the sacred African element and even brought some of samples of it home to use in his work. He started to experiment with using the excrement in some of his earlier paintings and had success. Ofili said that using the droppings attract a multiple of meanings and ... • 13. Accounting System And The Roman Empire Another Society with their own intricate accounting system was the Roman Empire. This comes as no surprise because of the scope and size of the Roman Empire; accounting was once again a necessity to a well maintained society. There is evidence of comprehensive financial statements in the rule of Emperor Augustus circa 63 BC 14 AD. These statements included information on expenses on statistics concerning the provinces and dependent kingdoms; direct and indirect taxation; as well as recurrent expenditures and gifts , as well as, the amounts of cash in the Aerarium...and in the hands of the publicani (Oldroyd, The Role... , 1995). The Aerarium was the treasury, and the publicani was the public. These are similar to what the Chinese had because they were used by the government to go about completing the financing and running of the empire. These figures could be used to make it easier to track all the expenses and revenues of the government. The government was not the only ones to keep accounting records in the Roman Empire either. Account books were kept by those look to maintain and achieve citizenship. It is believed that men of property at Rome often did write up their permanent account books about every month. They were required to do this to maintain their citizenship because citizenship was tied to the amount of property owned and this meant a need to keep records of it. (Oldroyd, The Role... , 1995). Theory Of Games And Economic Behaviour Although rationality provides the foundation for behavioural decision theory, current findings suggest that heuristics and biases have a significant impact on individual decision making. Rationality can only go so far in explaining individual decision making. A large part of early research into decision theory was based on the economic or normative approach, which tries to predict the actions of a so called rational decision maker . Although Bernoulli (1738) was the first to introduce the concept of utility into decision making, it was Von Neumann and Morgenstern s book, Theory of Games and Economic Behaviour which revolutionised the idea of a rational decision process. In contrast, EU theory suggests people have different attitudes toward risk some would be risk averse and prefer the guaranteed payment, even though the expected value is lower, while others would choose the riskier bet. However, EU Theory and the normative approach to decision making are not without criticisms. As with every mathematical model, EU theory is a simplified representation of reality and does not guarantee reliable predictions of human behaviour. Indeed, empirical evidence suggests the existence of systematic deviations from rationality. As Dawes (1988) wrote, People, groups, organizations, and governments make choices. Sometimes the consequences of their decisions are desirable, sometimes not (p. 2). Hence it can be argued that decision making is not purely rational (where rationality is defined as the decision predicted by EU Theory). In in attempt to create a more psychologically accurate description of decision making, Kahneman and Tversky (1979) developed Prospect Theory, which theorized that individuals have different perceptions when considering losses versus gains. In contrast to EU Theory, which suggests we make decisions that maximise our utility, research by Kahneman and Tversky (1979) found that information is not processed in such a rational way. In a society that is continuing to regress to the ways of previous historical times, does it make you think that maybe no one is working to keep their mind refreshed and allow our society to grow as opposed to it going backwards? Particular aspects of our society are regressing to ways that can be compared to those of the Paleolithic period, including the way our society s gender roles are portrayed, our ideology and how we treat people, and being civilized. Females as an entirety, are supposed to be in shape, happy at all times to meet any and all needs, look like a runway model, and have all of our ducks in a row. This is similar to how the Paleolithic people wanted women to look like the statuettes and to be gatherers, serving their husband, children, and other family members that they may have had (Anitei). Essentially, modern day society is reverting it s ideals to those of the Paleolithic people: to separate ourselves into groups and to view women as sex objects and servants for their family. Next, our ideology and treatment of others has somewhat regressed to the ways of the Old Stone Age. The Paleolithic people worshiped a Mother Goddess that was similar to a mother nature genre of belief (Cunningham). The Mother Goddess represented female power and it s role of rebirth and life (Cunningham). Throughout history, society has drawn away from female goddesses and towards male deities (Pino). Strike at San Fransisco State College Essay Strike at San Fransisco State College In the meantime at San Francisco State College, students in the Third World Liberation Front (TWLF), a coalition of African American, Latino, and Asian American student groups, began demanding reforms that addressed the concerns of students of color and the surrounding community. After more than a year of negotiating with the school and organizing students, they called a strike on November 6, 1968, that became the longest student strikein United States history. When it was finally settled in March 1969, many of the students demands were met, including the establishment of a School of Ethnic Studies. On November 28, 1968, Hayakawa was named acting president of San Francisco State College by California Governor Ronald Reagan and the trustees of the California state college system. With no previous administrative or political experience, his selection was an unpopular choice among faculty members and students. Prior to his appointment, Hayakawa had served on a five person presidential selection committee whose members had reportedly agreed not to seek the office. Hayakawa denied any agreement had been made and accepted the job under extreme opprobrium from committee members. Hayakawa was viewed as eccentric in appearance and style. His first priority as acting president was to reopen the campus following Thanksgiving break ending the strike. To achieve this objective, he yielded on some student demands and rejected others. The author of Jackson s The Lottery describes Shirley Jackson s short story perfectly, It is a grim, even nihilistic, parable of the evil inherent in human nature (Coulthard 226). The Lottery creates an immensely eerie story by using the setting of a small town, the nonchalant attitude of the community, and the tone of the author. The size and remoteness of the village really brings the creepiness of the story together. It makes the reader believe that this story could most definitely be nonfiction. • 24. Levi Strauss And The Black Jeans Denim has been a part of American culture for more than 100 years, and is common all over the world. It has developed over the years and has become a central part of most people s wardrobes. Denim went beyond just the pair of blue jeans and is used to make shirts and jackets, increasing its value as a fabric. I strongly believe that there are very few articles of clothing that are as versatile and easy to wear as a pair of jeans. With that said, I feel that jeans will be a staple in fashion for both men and women for many years to come. The origins of denim come from a man named Levi Strauss, who saw a need for type of pants that would last longer. The jeans would mostly be used for laborers during the Gold Rush in the late 1800s. So, on May 20, 1873, Levi Strauss and his financial partner Jacob Davis created the blue jeans (Our Story). His brand, Levi Strauss and Co., also known as simply Levi s has become one of the most well known denim brands in America. Little did Levi Strauss know, but he would be the catalyst for one the most iconic and durable garments of clothing to date. It wasn t until the 1930s that denim became an item that was worn in everyday life rather just a pant to wear while working. In the 30s there were many Western movies with cowboys wearing denim jeans, which became very popular for Americans (History). In the 1940s, during World War 2, the denim overall was introduced and was worn by off duty soldiers (History). This was the time that brands like ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 27. Disadvantages Of CHO Cells CHO (Chinese Hamster Ovary) cells are cell lines extracted from the ovary of the Chinese Hamster and are exclusively used for commercial purposes in the production of recombinant therapeutic proteins. Some proteins are to be synthesized using mammalian cells rather than the commonly used microbial cells as the latter lacks the exact machinery to produce the complete protein or for safety concerns. Among the mammalian cells, CHO cells continue to be the choice for the production of several therapeutic proteins. However there are certain disadvantages associated with CHO cells which include low productivity, substrate product stability, slower growth rate, low cell density, etc. These cell lines consume nutrients continuously beyond stoichiometric needs. Thus, the mode of operation should be chosen in such a way that they overcome the disadvantages of the CHO cell line. The large scale production of therapeutic proteins in industries is done in suspension culture as the adherent cell line poses a challenge in scaling up. Currently there are two dominant modes of operation for producing therapeutic proteins based on mammalian cell lines (Hu and Aunins, 1997) in industrial scale: Fed batch bioreactors Perfusion ... One is the increased number of resettlement and displaced people, as famine victims search for food and other necessities (Kidane, 1989). Migration poses a big threat on health and social structures, as people forcibly or wilfully search for survival. Another demographic consequence is inevitably seen in the decrease of population. Mortality rates peak during and after the famine, as people are still physically weak. However, post famine, fertility rate will increase as families wish to have more children in insurance against future risk (Kidane, 1989). 6.2. Fig. 3 shows that while there has been a population growth of more than 20 million in Ethiopia between 1992 and 2009, the number of malnourished people had decreased only by little. How could the continuous problems of malnourishment be resolved or minimized? What communities need is well developed coping systems on the local level. Humanitarian organisations should be focusing on providing sustainable means locally, thus when drought occurs, locals have better ways of coping. Markets have to regulated, thus, prices need to be fixed so that poor people can also afford to buy grains. Food production in Africa has to be improved dramatically. The exact mechanisms by which COX is inhibited in various circumstances are still being discussed and this is because of the differences in activity of aspirin, paracetamol and other NSAIDs. With these differences it has been proposed that further COX enzymes may exist. A theory of how paracetamol may work is by the inhibition of the COX 3 isoform (a COX 1 splice variant). COX 3 has been expressed in dogs and it shows that this enzyme shares similarities to other COX enzymes, while producing pro inflammatory chemicals and is selectively inhibited by paracetamol. The soldiers became confused of what they were throughout the book we are forlorn like children, and experienced like old men, we are crude and sorrowful and superficial I believe we are lost the metaphor used portrays the message of the soldiers feeling misplaced in the world as they looked like children, but they acted like old men. • 42. Kants On Crimina Carnis By Immanuel Kant Crimina Carnis Serious violations of our duty towards ourselves produce an aversion accompanied either by horror or by disgust; suicide is of the horrible, Crimina Carnis of the disgusting (Kant, 300). In the philosophical argument pertaining to suicide entitled Suicide and Duty by Immanuel Kant, Kant defines and argues the immorality of suicide. Labelling suicide a kind of Crimina Carnis (300) Crimina of/pertaining to a crime (Latin Dict.) and Carnis which is related to the flesh, Kant avows that every living thing even an injured tree in nature seeks some sort of preservation (300); thus deeming suicide immoral. In relation to suicide, Kant argues that instead of focusing on the aspect of a human being sacrificing their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Research Paper On Drugs In Sports Drugs Taking its Toll Lebron James once stated, but sports carried me away from being in a gang, or being associated with drugs. Sports was my way out (Pilon). The access to drugs in today s world is becoming easier and easier. Studies show numerous athletes from other countries travel to the United States to buy stimulants that are illegal in their countries, to be used in competitions(Scott). In addition, games are supposed to be entertaining but how could they be when rules are broken and bad examples are shown, all resulting in awful side effects. Lots of people are in the stands cheering for the players, but are they cheering for their effort in the game or their ability to cheat? Taking performance enhancing drugs will destroy ... • 44. The Importance Of Science Science is an aspect of life and something which is identifiable in every student s lives as it is continuously extended, refined and revised. In the text, Taking Science to School, there are five points identifying why science should be taught science. The five reasons include 1. Science is a significant part of human culture and represents the human thinking capacity, 2. It provides common experience for development of language, logic, and problem solving skills to be used in the classroom, 3. A demand for students to make it personal and community decisions about issues in which scientific information plays a key role, 4. It will become a lifelong vocation, 5. The nation is reliant on the technical and scientific abilities for citizens due to economic competitiveness and national needs (Duschl et al, 2007, Page 34). The science curriculum should be focused and designed for students to be able to understand and grasp the knowledge of the basic skills, which in turn will lead learning efforts. Three dimensional learning is not only highlighting the facts of the content of science, but also the doing of science (Willson et al, 2015, pg. 28). According to Seeing Students Learn Science (Beatty et al, 2017) which include 1). practices through which scientist and engineers do their work; 2). the crosscutting concepts that apply across science disciplines; and 3). the core ideas of the disciplines (page 6). Scientific practices are focused towards asking questions, analyzing, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. Comparing Crimson Tide And A Soldier s Story The movies I am reviewing are Crimson Tide and A Soldier s Story. The main characters in Crimson Tide are Captain Ramsay, played by Gene Hackman; and Lieutenant Commander Hunter, played by Denzel Washington, Ramsay s executive officer. The main characters in A Soldier s Story are Captain Davenport, played by Howard Rollins; and Sergeant Waters, played by Adolph Caesar. Ironically, in this movie a young Denzel Washington played a prominent role as Private First Class Peterson. This was before he became a household name. Arguably, this movie catapulted him into superstardom. This paper will compare and contrast the leadership styles of Captain Ramsay and Sergeant Watters. The scene in Crimson Tide was aboard a nuclear submarine called the USS Alabama. Facing threat of a nuclear attack from a Russian submarine, Ramsay and Hunter found themselves locked in a power struggle because Hunter refused Ramsay s orders to launch a preemptive nuclear strike pending confirmation of an aborted emergency action message (EAM). Hunter s insubordination led to a mutiny and a series of armed standoffs aboard the submarine between those loyal to Hunter and those loyal to Ramsay. When the EAM the finally came through, Hunter s insubordination turned out to avert nuclear war. Ramsey quietly conceded that Hunter was a correct to suggest waiting on confirmation and recommended Hunter for his next promotion before a disciplinary hearing. The scene in A Soldier s Story was the Deep South during ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
