Women Within The Grecian Culture
Ancient Greece as a place and period time in our extensive history was a place of patriarchal power,
controlled almost entirely by the masculine sphere and association with the Gods. It was a time in
history that produced some of the most famous thinkers however they were all men. Women within
the Grecian culture where very much the passive sex, confined to housework and almost never
educated. It is interesting therefore that the characters that have emerged at the exposure of the
phallic philosophical pen still remain as an ally to the feminist movement and are relevant to our
way of thinking today, acting as feminist pioneers both in theory and literature, helping the canon
evolve years after being written. At a time where scientific... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Medea, the Gorgon monster who seduces men, turning them to stone and Antigone who is arguably
still one of the most powerful images we have of female strength to date. In their own right and
agency, they all act as feminist pioneers Sophocles Antigone, along with Medea are potentially the
best example we have for how Myth has shaped and developed the feminist movement. Sophocles
drama Antigone, written around 441 BCE, is one of his three Theban plays that chronicle the dark
fortunes of the house of Oedipus, king of Thebes. After Oedipus death, there is a struggle over the
kingship between his two sons Eteocles and Polyneices. The army of Polyneices marches on
Thebes and is defeated, but both brothers are killed in the battle. The new ruler, Creon, decrees that
whereas Eteocles will be buried with full honours for defending the city, the rebel Polyneices
must be denied holy rites and left to rot in the field and if anyone disobeys him they are to be
punished by death. The state and patriarchy take high place within the novel as it does in many
Grecian teaching places. The play was used to teach the subjects of the citadel about respect for the
law and respect for society. We must therefore ask questions concerning the place of a feminine
tragic hero, and the effect that it would have had.
Antigone as a rebellious character raises

Why Sales And Per Capita
Per Capita and sales would be easily related as Per Capita would be based upon each person s
salary. If an individual s salary is increased it would, in turn, make it more feasible for said person
to be able to make extra purchases that they previously wouldn t. This would explain why sales and
Per Capita are positively related. Many variables would play a role in the salesdecision as well.
Variables
Numerous variables are to be considered when making a large purchase. Some of those variables
would include competitor advertising, competitor dealer discounts, introductions of new
competitive models. Other variables that would be considered would be the age and gender of the
purchaser, also traits and characteristics of the purchaser ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net
...
Dependent Variables. Dependent variables are dependent upon the independent variable and
would be likely to change as the independent variable changes. With age changing a person s
wants or needs would also change. A person that is young and single would most likely not come
to a car lot to purchase a minivan whereas a person that has begun a family would consider this
purchase. A teenager that has just received their license is most likely not going to purchase a large
family vehicle as well. Mattingly mentions that dependent variables are akin to phenomena;
selection of dependent variables, therefore, should be based on the phenomenon of interest rather
than some context (Dependent Variables, p. 237). Thus saying that dependent variables should be
based on occurrences or facts that are of interest to the researcher, rather than just as a method of
research.
Moderating Variables. Moderating variables are another form of independent variables. These
variables will have a significant effect on the independent variables and the dependent variables
relationship (Cooper Schindler. p. 56). Moderating variables would include the variables such as
competitors advertising, competitive dealer discounts, and the introduction of new competitive
models. These variables are outside the control of the original automobile manufacturer, but using
these variables would most definitely have an effect on the relationship in the independent and
dependent variables.

Smoking In Periodontal Disease
(C)Biological Effects of Smoking in Periodontal Disease:
Tobacco smoke contains carbon monoxide (CO) which will lower the oxygen(Oв‚‚) saturation of
haemoglobin in healthy gingiva. Oxygen tension within the pockets was substantially reduced in
smokers. This may favour the growth of anaerobic bacteria, even in the shallower pockets 21.The
local host response to bacteria, which initiates periodontitis, includes the recruitment of leukocytes
and the subsequent release of infiammatory mediators and cytokines such as interleukin (IL
1,6,8,10,12) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF alpha). Researchers have tried to study a possible
relationship between smoking, stress and cytokine production.15 Giannopoulou studied cytokines in
the pathogenesis of periodontal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If smoking is associated with increased risk for periodontal disease, a reduction or elimination of
tobacco use should reduce this risk and should be beneficial to the patient. There is good evidence
that the occurrence of periodontal disease is less in previous smokers than in those who continue to
smoke.
Fullmer found that microbial profiles differed extensively between smokers and quitters at 6 and 12
months following smoking termination. The microbial community in smokers was similar to the
baseline, while quitters demonstrated radically more divergent profiles. Changes in bacterial levels
contributed to this shift. These findings reveal a vital role for smoking cessation in changing the
subgingival biofilm and suggest a mechanism for enhanced periodontal health linked with smoking
termination.10In a ten year radiographic follow up of alveolar bone loss, it was reported that
progression of bone loss was significantly retarded in those who had given up smoking during the
study, compared with those who sustained to smoke (Bolin et al., 2003)(X). Even though there may
be conflicts in the research, particularly concerning smoking s effect on the microflora, there is very
strong substantiation of more severe dose related periodontal destruction among smokers and a
return to a healthier status once periodontal remedy and smoking cessation

Alzbeta Letters Home
September 13th, 1939, was a very special day for me and my wife Alzbeta. It is the day of Rosh
Hashanah, the first day of the jewish calendar. The only problem was, we couldn t celebrate with
our family and our friends from Nozyk Synagogue, due to us being fearful of the Germans
invading Poland. It was more of a day of sadness; I was going to have to enlist in the polish army
soon to fight the germans on the front lines. My grandfather had died in the great war during the
battle of the somme, and my parents didn t want me to suffer a similar fate. Unfortunately for
them, my country needed me, and I would have to go whether I wanted to or not. Today was my
wife and I s 3rd anniversary, and we planned to go on a trip to Czechoslovakia. We also went
there on our honeymoon, and decided to go there every other year afterwards. I still remember
our wedding day, my father was crying tears of joy, proud of how much his son had grown up.
The test to get into the army was nothing special; just a physical and a few questions, and some
training for a few days. I still remember my last day of training in the army, our drill sergeant was

soldier where we were going, and he told me that if I asked him again, my head would no longer

the main camp. They told us that this was where we were staying, which was odd. Everyone else
was in cabins, while we were given tents. We thought maybe they ran out of room, but then we
noticed some of the cabins looking empty and lifeless, while we could clearly see our other
comrades inside warm cabins. We soon realized that everyone in the tents was jewish, and found

Adversity In The Glass Castle By Jeannette Walls
Colson Whitehead once said, Let the broken glass be broken glass, let it splinter into smaller
pieces and dust and scatter. Let the cracks between things widen until they are no longer cracks
but the new places for things . In the memoir The Glass Castle, author Jeannette Walls faces
despair and turmoil as a result of her impoverished and dysfunctional upbringing. As Jeannette
grows up, she watches her father Rex fail to reach his full potential and his dream to build a Glass
Castle shatter as his alcoholismtakes control. Aware of the devastation her father was causing, she
begins to slowly lose faith in him but doesn t fail to escape her destructive household and pursue
her dreams of becoming a journalist. Due to her parents lack of parenting and being forced to fend
for herself, Jeannette developed a sense of responsibility to care for others and make amends to
improve the familys lifestyle. Despite the turbulence and destruction her parents had caused over
the years, unlike her father, Jeannette was able to find the strength to overcome obstacles,
developing characteristics that ultimately lead her to achieving her dream, thus illustrating that
adversity has the power to shape one s identity.
While her father s dismisses his destructive nature, Jeannette becomes conscious of his actions
which motivates her to make amends in hopes of leaving their desolate life. Instead of getting help
for his childhood trauma, Rex immerses himself in alcohol causing him to become

Akira Kurosawa Research Paper
Kurosawa is an interesting director in that his films share the context of his own life. As a child
he was exposed to the strict religion and meticulous order of Japanese society, while also being a
witness to the devastation of a massive earthquake on 1 September, 1923. Through the great
earthquake, Kurosawa wrote, I learnt not only of the extra ordinary powers of nature, but of the
extra ordinary things that lie in human hearts (Something Like.. p.23). Similar to Shakespeare,
Kurosawa shared the intent to explore the conflicts of an individual s emotions and internal self,
while allowing it to erupt on a cosmic scale (usually in all out war). Akira Kurosawa is commonly
regarded as the most influential Japanese filmmaker to date,

Informative Speech On Tailgating
Specific purpose
: To inform my audience the tailgating among Malaysian driver
Central idea : there are many implication caused by tailgating such as emotional instability, slow
reaction time and speeding.
Introduction
I. Tailgating is very common in Malaysia and most of them occur in a highway. II. Most Malaysia
may experience this bad act on the road whether they being tailgated by someone or tailgating
someone themselves. III. Tailgating is a very risky move made by the tailgater and it can cause
several of problems. IV. There are many implication caused by tailgating itself.
Transition
: let explain all this implication to you all in further details and let me show you that tailgating will
surely will cause you a very big problem to yourself and the person that you tailgated.
Body
A. First, tailgating can cause the person that you tailgated become emotionally unstable. 1. It
raises the issue of harassment (to trouble, worry, or torment) because some drivers who are
being tailgated may experience fear and anxiety. (http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/) a. This is normal
to the person that have tailgated because when someone tailgates you, you will surely become
nervous and afraid b. This will most likely will cause them to drive beyond the limit of their car
and surely will cause their car to lose control for example during turn, in a big roundabout
especially in Samarahan (self observation) c. I have seen by myself that someone lose control of
their car in a big roundabout on the way to Samarahan due being tailgated by irresponsible driver.
(self observation) 2. It can also make the driver that have been tailgated becomes more aggressive
in their driving. a. Tailgating infringes upon one s privacy because some drivers may feel as if
their personal space have been invaded and/or violated and this will result anger and aggression.
(http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/) b. The person who has been tailgated usually taps on their braketo
warn the tailgater to back off but if that fail, they most likely to create and accident on purpose
such apply on the brake and stops that result the tailgater to hit at the back of his car. The driver
soon later accuses the tailgater for following too close.

What Can Government Do to Mitigate the Chinese Style of Picking up Children?
There are streams of people and cars busily coming and going everyday to pick up children in front
of the school entrance of Bei Heng Primary School, Xin Cheng District, Hohhot, causing an
annoying traffic jam.

Heng Primary School. However, the number of cars coming to pick up children achieve to more
than
1500 while there are only less than 200 parking spaces nearby. As noted by North New Newspaper

In striking contrast, hardly any parent would pick up children in Japan where the urban
morphology, traffic condition, population and so on are the very image of China. Instead,
Japanese children go to school and return home on foot in a well ordered way. They go to the
nearest school with walking time from 15 minutes to 20 minutes. Besides, students would form a
small group spontaneously to accompany each other. (Pei Jun) As reported by the Global Times,
the 24th edition. There is no doubt that Japan has done a great job since they take some effective
measures already.
Not only in Japan where children go to school and return home on their own, but also in many other
countries. What happens in Hohhot is

Use Of Household Wastewater And Convert It Into Usable...
Greywater systems are a way to use household wastewater and convert it into usable water for other
purposes. For example, wastewater from showers, washing machines, and dishwater can be reused,
mainly for landscape irrigation. Greywater is reusable due to the fact that the water being used does
not come in contact with feces from toilets, hence its reusability. Although greywatermay look dirty,
it is clean enough for the use in the watering of a lawn or landscaping. These greywater systems
have been improved throughout the years from when the systems were first legalized in 1989 to the
advanced systems available today.
The use of greywater systems was not legalized until August of 1989 in Santa Barbara, California.
By May of 1991, five ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Code of Practice also covers the the potential risks of greywater recycling. The best way to
learn about implementing greywater system is contacting the Water Unit in the area of relevance.
Water recycling has been proven to be an efficient and successful way to create a new and
reliable source for water without compromising the health of the public. Scientists have been
looking for ways to reuse water, because as water energy demands and environmental needs grow
water recycling will play a bigger role in our overall water supply. With the help of scientific
research, water recycling, along with water conservation and efficiency will allow us to sustainably
manage our important water resources. There are many different practices that scientists have tried,
but greywater systems are the most cost efficient and easiest to be used within a household. Some
of the other options to a Greywater system would be sedimentation, biological oxidation, and
filtration. Sedimentation is the process in which water is separated from solids through the force of
gravity. Wastewateris placed in a primary sedimentation tank giving the water an opportunity to
separate. This technique is the primary treatment for sewage. Biological oxidation is where the
demand of oxygen within the wastewater is reduced, which then will also reduce the amount of
active toxins within the wastewater. This secondary treatment is widely used at sewage plants to

Expectations Of Characters In Shakespeare s The Scarlet...
Doodle was just about the craziest brother a boy ever had. Page 1 paragraph 2 Doodle was an
ordinary boy with something special that not everybody had a heart condition. It prevented him
from doing most things an average boy could. Doodle and his brother would spend most of their
time at Old Woman Swamp or outdoors. They are always together in some way. The author of The
Scarlet Ibisuses foreshadowing, similes, and imagery to show that others expectations of one can
impact themselves and take a toll on their life. The first main character in the story is Doodle, also
known as William Armstrong. When he was born, no one had faith in him of surviving, except his

The major conflicts in the story are man vs. man, man vs. self, man vs. society. First, man vs.
man because Doodle has conflicts with not living up to what Brother wants. Although Brother
develops a bond with Doodle, his love and greed pushed Doodle to learn how to walk and doing
more than what Doodle can. Doodle has already gone too far by learning how to walk, while the
doctor says to be careful. On page 3, according to the doctor, the instructions are, ... he mustn t
get too excited, too hot, too cold, or too tired... must be treated gently. Disobeying these
instructions can come with consequences. The doctor then goes on saying some movements
could strain his weak heart and possibly kill him. Secondly, man vs. self. When Brother first
proposed the idea of Doodle walking, Page 4 Doodle responds with, I can t walk,
Brother,...Mama, the doctor everybody, He doesn t have a desire to learn how to walk because he
s been influenced by everybody around him that he can t. Lastly, man vs. society because society
is what caused Brother to help Doodle. According to the narrator, he was embarrassed, Page 4
paragraph 4, When Doodle was five years old, I was embarrassed at having a brother ... couldn t
walk, so I set out to teach him. These 3 conflicts help guide the theme and moral of the story. The
author uses similes to show, others expectations of one can impact themselves. The narrator

How Did The Cold War Affect The Middle East
What impact did the Cold War have on the Middle East?
We see the cold war as a period of hostility, which ended in 1989 between the Soviet Union and
the USA in which neither country fired shots at each other directly but engaged in proxy wars to
propagate their opposing ideological views and expand their influence globally. The tentacles of
the opposing sides spread globally and the Middle East was no exception and it is impossible to
know what influence Oil had. In 1953 the countries of the Middle East were developing, post
colonial and non aligned but the shah of Iran, supported by the USA was being challenged pro
communist Iranian nationalists.
In 1955 Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Turkey and Britain formed the Central Treaty Organization (Cento),...

On July 14, 1958, the Iraqi monarchy was overthrown in a military coup. The new government was
led by General Abdul Karim Qasim who withdrew Iraq from the Baghdad Pact, opened diplomatic
relations with Soviet Union and adopted a non aligned stance. The organization dropped the name
Baghdad Pact in favor of CENTO at that time.
CENTO did little to prevent the expansion of Soviet influence to non member states in the area.
Whatever containment value the pact might have had was lost when the Soviets leap frogged the
member states, establishing close military and political relationships with governments in Egypt,
Syria, Iraq, the People s Democratic Republic of Yemen, Somalia, and Libya. By 1970, the USSR
had deployed over 20,000 troops to Egypt, and had established naval bases in Syria, Somalia, and
P.D.R. Yemen.
The Iranian revolution spelled the end of the organization in 1979, but in reality, it essentially had
been finished since 1974, when Turkey invaded Cyprus. This led the United Kingdom to withdraw
forces that had been earmarked to the alliance,[citation needed] and the United States Congress
halted Turkish military aid despite two Presidential vetoes.[5] With the fall of the Iranian monarchy,
whatever remaining rationale for the organization was lost. Future U.S. and British defense
agreements with regional countries such as Pakistan, Egypt, and the Persian Gulf states were

Perception of the World and False Images from White Noise
Don DeLillo s award winning novel White Noise takes the idea of the supremacy of false images
to the extreme. Through various scenarios, such as the airborne toxic event and the Dylar dilemma,
DeLillo critiques contemporary society s over dependence on false images. The characters in the
novel that exemplify this over dependence appear humorous on one hand, yet tragic on the other.
The humor comes from the novel s characters behaving like cartoon characters who continually get
hurt, but keep coming back for more. The novel s characters keep getting hurt by false images, yet
continue to believe in them, causing the reader to smack his or her head in astonishment. ... Show

Jack, as a department head, must wear a black academic robe while at the college. He likes the
idea, especially the flourish that results from him checking his watch, saying, Decorative
gestures add romance to a life (9). Jack, speaking of Hitler, says, Some people put on a uniform
and feel bigger, stronger, safer (63). I believe he is also talking about himself. Then there is the
matter of his name. Jack, at the advice of the chancellor, had changed his name to J.A.K.
Gladney by inventing an extra initial. The chancellor also told him to gain weight to look more
formidable. He wanted me to grow out into Hitler. If I could become more ugly, he seemed to be
suggesting, it would help my career enormously (17). Jack s false image is thus threefold: his name,
his size and his dress. By projecting this image, Jack feels trustworthy, strong and important.
Jack is not the only one projecting false images. Jack seems to be a magnet for those projecting
false images. It was curious how I kept stumbling into the company of lives in intelligence, he

if his desire to project a false image attracts him (or makes him attractive) to those doing likewise.

authority (63). Granted Heinrich had no control over his name at the time it was

Arcadio Buendias Journey
While reading this book it takes you on a journey and you do not appreciate the destination until it

because they set the tone. This tone is set by the head of the Buendia family, Jose Arcadio Buendia.
The founder of the town, Macondo and his family have a lasting impact on the town for over a
century. What the author Marquez is trying to display in his writing is how the town changes with
the different generations of the Buendia family. Specifically the effect Melquiades, a gypsy has on
Macondo and the Buendia family throughout the story. Melquiades changes the psyche of the whole
town and the Buendia family. Melquiades presence in town fascinated everyone with what type of

anyone and they soon become friends. Buendia wanted to learn more about technological, changing
his appearance and not caring about what he was doing becoming antisocial from family. What the
author was trying to show here is not letting something consume you so much that you change your

There is one scene in the movie which could have been impossible to produce without computer
imagery. The scene involves Scar who wants to kill his royal relatives by trapping them under the
crowd of thousands running wildebeests.
Occasionally, there s an effect that the directors want in a film that would be virtually impossible to
do with traditional animation techniques, explains CGI supervisor Scott Johnston. That s where
computer animation can sometimes make a difference. A stampede of thousands of wildebeests
would be too laborious to create by hand but animators working with computers can figure out what
the behaviour of the animal is and replicate it. We can also create all the camera angles that the
scene requires and match ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They came up with the idea a simulation, sort of following the leader. They created the leaders
and the followers so logically, the followers had to follow the leaders but at the same time
avoiding each other because they did not want the wildebeests to crash into each other. The next
step was to match them into the background. The CGI crew built the 3 dimensional grid stages
which matched the perspective and the look of the background which was going to be in the scene.
Then they placed one of the simulations on the grid and replaced the small magnets with the
wildebeests running. The different angles of the camera gave the audience the possibility to see the
wildebeests running either over the camera or under or even zoomed in the crowd.
In terms of color, the animators wanted the wildebeests to be slightly of different color so they
gave them random wild colors. It was made with the purpose that the director now could say
what exactly he liked or disliked and what he wanted to change in the particular wildebeest in the
scene. When they put this scene in the film for a draft version, the shades of grey were applied to
match the black and white film. And then in final color, they gave them each different coloring
but within a very limited range of shading: some of them became slightly lighter grey, some of
them darker grey. All in all, five CGI specialists spent over two years creating the incredible two

as to say is this all? Cortez and his men then demonstrated the brute force of their cavalry, horses

The Last Days Of Summer
The last few days of summer are always unforgettable. As the school year draws near I find
myself cherishing every moment of summer fun. Everyone is staying up late and sleeping all
day, except for me. On this particular August morning, I was struggling to get up for my team s
daily soccer practice. Once dressed I was actually feeling pretty excited about the day. The
twenty minute car ride flew by and Mom dropped Anna and I off at the soccer field. I stepped
out of the car and the smoldering heat hit me like a freight train and I had to remind myself that
practicing is for the best. I began putting on my socks and shin guards when several of my friends
started showing up, one by one. I m so relieved when my favorite people... Show more content on

Not only was sweat dripping from my brow, it was dripping all over my weak body. I sat down
and took my first sip water. That sip tasted like the most glorious pure ice water I had ever drank.
Five minutes went by and resting was over. Luckily though a shooting drill came next. On my
first shot I used great force and my laces to send the ball in. It flew up towards the very top right
corner of the goal frame but my effort my not enough. The team goal keeper leaped with all her
might, knocking the ball out of play and diving onto the ground making an unpleasant thud.
Although it was a good shot, I felt defeated and as I got back in line, the frustration set in. I
stepped up for my next shot brimming with determination and made the goal, my confidence
restored. After a few more rounds of shooting we were given another water break. Time was
passing and the humidity was rising. This time the water just tasted like any other water, but I
was still satisfied. As practice was drawing towards the end, it was time for our last activity:
scrimmaging. It s what I looked forward to almost every day. While coach began picking teams, I
prayed my team wouldn t have to wear bibs. Of course we did, which is just my luck. The stench of
the bibs was so bad it could have knocked me down. But as I pulled one over my head, I pretended
it was a brand new blouse. I was so proud to be on the varsity team, I would ve worn anything.

Columbus Blue Jackets Case Study
Can the Columbus Blue Jackets continue their hot start? Michael Manley When the Columbus
Blue Jackets trounced the MontrГ©al Canadiens 10 to 0 back on November 4 th , most
believed it was a fluke. Flash forward a week and the Jackets again dominated another top team
in the league, defeating the St. Louis Blues 8 to 4 on November 12 th . Currently, the Jackets
are sitting on a record of 8 4 2 while holding the best power play percentage in the NHL and a top

General Manager Jarmo Kekalainen attempted to solve that problem during last season when he
traded for the young defender Seth Jones. But the team ended last season still needing help on
the back end. They now have that help with the rookie out of the University of Michigan Zach

scoring 13 points in 14 games. Unfortunately for the Blue Jackets, they have to compete with the
other Metropolitan division teams. The Rangers, Capitals, and Penguins are surely the favorites
to win the three division spots leaving the Jackets to fight with the Flyers, Devils, Islanders, and
other teams in the Atlantic division for the last two wildcard spots. While a difficult task this
Columbus team has shown so far they can outplay the best of them. Despite few real changes

Hermaphrodites, or What We Call in Modern Times, Intersexuals
Hermaphrodites, or what we call in the modern times: intersexuals, are misunderstood throughout
the entire world. Often times when we hear the word intersexuals or hermaphrodites we
automatically have a negative connotation towards them. However, what most people do not
realize is that hermaphroditism is in fact very common for quite a long period of time. Records
were dated back to even the time when Plato was alive. However, the idea, or the actual concept of

were intersexuals and discovered that the majority of them were content with their lives, and did
not develop any psychological problems or scars. A notable case would be a woman named
Emma who had grown up as a female with a vagina and a penis sized clitoris. As a teenager, Emma

However, often times the one that degenerates does not diminish the entire way, therefore making

telling us that hermaphroditism is very uncommon and should be treated as soon as birth because
the victims would be psychologically damaged from bullying and being different (ISNA, 2001). In

The Influence Of Music Education
The Influence of Music Education on Our Modernised Day
Music education is the study associated with the teaching and learning of music. It includes the

involvement of music is a fundamental component to human s behaviour and culture. Today, many
country provide music education from preschool through postsecondary as the result of music

According to the research of Eva Brand and Ora Bar Gil, learning music carry side benefits to us,
one of these is the potential to enhanced interpersonal abilities through listening activities. Listening

Porter s Five Forces Model
Porter s Five Forces In order to further figure out the failure of GM in Korea, we decided to
analyse it from industrial perspective. The five forces model, which was developed by the
Harvard professor Michael Porter, is going to be applied to the case. Porter s five force model
demonstrates that the Threat of New Entrant, the Threat of Substitute Products or services, the
Bargaining Power of Buyers, the Bargaining Power of Suppliers and the Rivalry among the
Existing Competitors are the forces that shape the industry competition. Throughout the
investigation of GM Korea, factors from the five forces model except for the Bargaining Power
of Suppliers, will be discussed briefly regarding the failure of GM Korea. Research tells us that,
GM Korea sold in total of 780,518 vehicles during the year 2013; 629,478 of the total productions
were exported to the world, the remaining 151,040 vehicles were managed to sell within Korea.
Compared to the sales in 2012, the domestic performance was actually raised by 25%, though
oversea orders reduced 13.2% and lead to a 6.2% reduction in total sales. The research implicates
that, GM Korea is actually heavily relied on global trading instead of domestic demand. In terms of
the threat of new entrants, it is reasonable to illustrate that the threat of new entrants for the
industry because GM Korea does rely a lot on global sales and the constant industry structure from
local market, and in this case, it mainly comes from the global market.

The Pros And Cons Of Bluefin Tuna Consumption
Bluefin tuna consumption poses a risk to oceans and people. Despite being an endangered species
and the subject of a worldwide agreement to not over fish, Bluefin tuna is still served at sushi
restaurants around the world. It s beautiful and delicious and sushi eaters are willing to pay a
premium for the fatty, meaty fish. The truth is, many people either don t know about the tunas status
or don t believe it s as bad as many scientists are saying.
Besides the species being highly endangered and over fished despite regulations, Bluefin tuna
accumulate toxins like mercury in their bodies, which get passed along to happy restaurant goers.
Because the species lives in almost every ocean and migrates to reach an immense number of
countries, Pacific Bluefin tuna and Atlantic Bluefin tuna (also classified as northern and southern
Bluefin tuna) can be caught and eaten around the world. This also makes them especially hard to
monitor: when different nations are competing for one resource in the open ocean where no one
has jurisdiction, the international regulations are near impossible to enforce and it becomes a free

Video compression utilizes high computational power. For real time requirements of multimedia
applications faster computations need to be performed. To fulfill such requirements of video
compression a parallel computational algorithm can be implemented. In this thesis, the parallelism
of multi core architecture was exploited using block matching algorithm. The test implementation
of the algorithm was done on MATLAB. The parallel model was designed using OpenMP and its
implementation was tested on multi core architectures. The parallel implementation divides a
current frame into independent macro blocks and each block is allotted to OpenMP section which
then assigns it to a thread for performing the computations. The result of the implementation shows
speedier computations with effective utilization of multi cores. This work suggests a promising
approach which can further be developed and exploited. Keywords motion estimation, block
matching algorithm, multi core architecture, OpenMP, multithreading. I.INTRODUCTION In the

important it is to reduce their current environmental impact, alternative energy sources like solar
and wind powered energy are becoming more prominent as eco friendly alternatives to current
unsustainable methods of power such as fossil fuels (BBC, n.d.) The purpose of this report is to
identify the best suited alternative energy sources for a call center based on information the
company has provided such as the area and space available, average wind speed, solar energy
reach and average ground temperatures. 2. Description of current situation The call center is in a
rural location and consumes 200MWh of energy annually; 150MWh of this is used for space
heating. Electrical storage heating is currently being used, with each off peak unit of electricity
costing ВЈ0.06 (April 2008). The company now wishes to reduce their environmental impact and if
possible, energy costs. The following report will discuss several microgeneration systems and
whether they are a viable option for the company to install in order to reduce their environmental
impact, energy usage and costs. Annual energy costs for the

As I took my first step onto the ice, I slid and fell onto the hard icy cold floor, but that did not stop

As I walked into the frosty indoor ice rink, the smell of cool, crisp ice filled my lungs with glee as I

would be able to stand on the shoes because of the sharp, piercing end of the shoe that was used

Modern Femininity And Gender Roles
Though Hannah Höch may be a jack of all trades in the art realm having dabbled in painting,
drawing, printmaking, textiles, pattern making, and photography she certainly is a master of
collage. A German artist of the 20th century, Höch is primarily known for her turbulent romantic
relationship with Czech artist Raoul Hausmann, one of the founders of the Berlin Dadamovement.
Hausmann credited himself and Höch as the inventors of photomontage. Höch uses her collages
to comment and critique the unstable sociopolitical state in Germany at the time. Her collages also
highlight the growth of mass media and new technology. Perhaps most importantly, Höch
challenges the concept of modern femininity and gender roles through her work. As the only female
Berlin Dada artist, Hannah Höch takes a unique and important perspective on the social and
political changes occurring in 20th century Germany. Höch was born in 1889 in Gotha, Germany.
She moved to Berlin in 1912 to study calligraphy, embroidery, wallpaper design, and graphic art
(National Museum of Women in the Arts). In 1915, she met Raoul Hausmann, with whom she had
a seven year relationship. From 1916 to 1926, she worked in the handicrafts department of a
magazine and newspaper publishing company. Her work included designing knitting, crocheting,
and embroidering patterns. Later on, she incorporated lace and embroidery patterns in her
photomontages juxtaposing these traditional women s crafts with modern culture. In 1926,

The Process Of Natural Selection
Introduction
Reproduction has been the ultimate goal of every living organism that has ever originated on the
earth. Over the time organisms have evolved to become better acclimated to the environment they
live in such that reproduction and survival requirements are met. Even so, not every organism
born is viable or produce progeny that survive and not every progeny that survives lives long
enough to reproduce again. Only those who are strong and successful in reproducing are selected
to survive. The process of Natural Selection functions as the key to maintain the balance of the
environment. Similarly, genes also work towards the same motive, replication. All genes on the
other hand follow the Mendelian Inheritance theory , which allows genes to segregate into only
50% of the offspring exhibit the genotypes of genes from both parents in a 1:1 ratio. However,
every commonly accepted system has its offenders. Similarly, offenders of the ancient gene
pathway, come in the form of selfish genetic elements who work around the system and use other
ways to increase in abundance, most often at the cost of the host s health. Surprisingly, these selfish
elements are still among the successful survivors though they do not follow the rules. One curious
case of such an element is the segregation distorter gene found in all populations of a species of fly
known as Drosophila melanogaster. The intention of this paper is to review a few researches
conducted to give you an insight of this

Same Sex Marriage Should Be Legalized . The Same Sex Marriage
Same sex marriage should be legalized
The same sex marriage has been widely debated in many countries for a long time. It is
an important issue because it concerns basic moral and human rights. People all over the world
come to the United States in search of freedom and equality. Being able to marry anyone, no
matter the gender, is a freedom of right, but if that freedom of right is taken away from people
than there is no equality. Homosexual people in the United States are people that deserve
freedom and equality and taking away their right to marriage is taking away their equality with
the rest of Americans. Even though certain religions are against same sex marriage, same sex ...

Writing for the majority, Justice
Anthony Kennedy states that no union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the
highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. Kennedy goes on to say that gay
and lesbian couples ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them
that right. ( Nasci1). I think this amendment protects the rights of homosexuals. Same sex
marriage should be legal because all individuals have the same right in society; same sex couples
can constitute a good based family. It is just a way to make official a common union nowadays,
even there are religious issue; because it is not related to polygamy; and because love matters
and it does not differ in nature according to the sex of its object or the person who experiences it.
Prior to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling, same sex marriage is only legal in some states.
Some states do not agree with same sex marriage. Same sex marriage was legal in 36 states and
the District of Columbia. In 19 of those states. (Nascri). I think same sex marriage should be
legal. The state should not say anything about agreeing to an adult s way of life. If two people
love each other and want to get married, regardless of their partner s color, religion, nationality or
gender, they should be allowed to do so love and marriage should be purely a personal choice.

In addition, while established EU members are some of the least corrupt in the world and are

The price could also discourage anyone under 30, with this market using their disposable income on

Bullies in School
Bullying in School
Introduction Bullying has been defined as longstanding violence physical or psychological,
conducted by an individual or group and directed against an individual who is not able to defend
themselves in the actual situation. The threat can be carried out in two major forms that is
psychological and physical threat. Some researchers had defined that the incident would include
intimidation, extortion, physical threats, the destruction of homework and psychological bullying.
Bullying, whether done verbally, physically or in cyber space, is wrong and should be dealt with

Ethics Of Care Ethics Paper
In 2013, Swift stated a clear majority of Americans (58%) say the drug should be legalized (1).
Within the past three years this number has increased. The Ethics of Care is related to this
concept because it has to do with taking a look at what is right and wrong. This system also takes
a look at equality within all. The development to sanction weed reflects the generally late
accomplishment of the development to legitimize gay marriage, which voters have likewise

The Ethics of Care stands for an attempt to change moral intelligent talk from the usual focus on
justice rights, and fairness, to another system that merges clearly feminine qualities for example
focusing too much on relationships, kindness, and the communication between and those for
who they take care of. John Tronto argues that the definition of the term ethics of care is
confusing due in part to the lack of a central role it plays in moral. He argues that moral is
engaged with human goodness, then care would appear to assume a big role in this type of way
of thinking. However, this is not the case and Tronto further stresses the association between care
and naturalness . The last thing just mentioned term refers to the socially and culturally built roles
where care is mainly assumed to be the role of the woman. So, care loses the power to take a

Organizational Structure Of Mcdonalds
The first McDonald s restaurant was run by brothers Dick and Mac McDonald in San
Bernardino, California. In 1954 Ray Kroc visited small but successful restaurant and was
stunned by the effectiveness of their operation. They produced a limited menu, concentrating on
just a few items: burgers, fries and beverages which allowed them to focus on quality and quick
service. They were looking for a new agent and Kroc saw an opportunity. In 1955, he founded
McDonald s System, Inc., a predecessor of the McDonald s Corporation, and six years later
bought the exclusive rights to the McDonald s name. By 1958, McDonald s had sold its 100

Use of Violence in Beloved by Toni Morrison Essay
As much as society does not want to admit, violence serves as a form of entertainment. In media
today, violence typically has no meaning. Literature, movies, and music, saturated with violence,
enter the homes of millions everyday. On the other hand, in Beloved, a novel by Toni Morrison,
violence contributes greatly to the overall work. The story takes place during the age of the
enslavement of African Americans for rural labor in plantations. Sethe, the proud and noble
protagonist, has suffered a great deal at the hand of schoolteacher. The unfortunate and seemingly
inevitable events that occur in her life, fraught with violence and heartache, tug at the reader s heart
strings. The wrongdoings Sethe endures are significant to the meaning... Show more content on

One may argue that she does not display much emotion while killing her children, she
unquestionably resembles a lunatic. Without this vital scene, Beloved would lack the utterly
shocking element that such violence provides. People want to immerse themselves into stories
about lunatics, emerge in the drama, and sympathize with the dire pain Sethe feels. Violent scenes,
among other elements, allow for this to occur in a novel.
Destruction of identity, another theme of the novel, relates to the violent scenes. In the second
part of Beloved, Sethe takes a stand and expresses her feeling on the violent acts being
performed on her. Nobody will ever get my milk no more except my own children. I never had
to give it to nobody else and the one time I did it was took from me they held me down and took
it. Milk that belonged to my baby (Morrison 200). Sethe finally comes to terms with her past and
vows to never let such a horrendous act happen to her again. Beloved s reincarnation occurs
because Sethe needs to face her dark past head on and free herself from living in shame. It took
time, but, Sethe eventually overcomes the odds and begins to live freely and peacefully in her house.
Morrison bases Sethe s character off of real life murderer, Margaret Garner. Morrison leaves few of
the important elements of the story the same and alters others. Why did Morrison go through the
trouble of writing Beloved? She did not write it for

Discrimination Through Ethical Norms Essay
Analyzing Discrimination through Mythical Norms
An in depth analysis of Canadian law and it s process can account for the indication in
development of a mythical norm. A specific staple has been made in our society that has shaped the
way in which our expectations are altered and cropped to an extenuating level that puts individuals
in our society at a disadvantage. This can be illustrated through discrimination of sexism and racism
which expose the many forms of inequality that are reproduced in our legal system and society
today. A mythical norm is often a narrow set of characteristics that often exclude and
disadvantage a broad spectrum of people. When reading Lorde s (Lorde, 1995 p.192)
interpretation of a mythical norm she writes Somewhere, on the edge of consciousness, there is
what I call a mythical norm, which each of us within our hearts know that is not me. This refers
to how a mythical norm is often described or referred to as a white, thin, male, young,
heterosexual, christian, financially secure as Barbara Perry says (Perry, 2011 p. 57) when
discussing that these characteristics are a trapping of power that is extremely present in society,
and often steers the ways in which we rationalize things. Lorde describes how we typically give
those who fall within this norm privileges that are often ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

economic reward than men, . Not only are there restrictions on women s power in society, but also

Essay on Tone and Imagery in The School Children
Tone and Imagery in The School Children
Louise Gluck s The School Children may provide some shock for readers as it twists and turns
through a school day marked by eerie abnormalities. Gluck successfully uses visual imagery to
convey a deeper meaning to a fourteen line poem about children, teachers and parents. These three
groups come to life through the descriptive poem that allows readers to form their own conclusions.
Though Gluck s meaning is never clearly stated, her use of tone and imagery create an extremely
visual work with three dynamic sets of characters.
Gluck continuously presents the schoolchildren as simple, orderly creatures. She portrays them as

The teachers are described in only one other line in the remainder of the poem. In line ten, near the
work s conclusion, Gluck writes, And the teachers shall instruct them in silence (10). This line
obviously leaves itself open to multiple interpretations. Can readers conclude that the teachers are
instructing the schoolchildren how to be silent? Surely it is believable that the faculty created by
Gluck would be teaching a set of students neatly arranged as if they were stuffed dolls to continue
to be silent. Others could view the description as implying that it is the teachers themselves who are
silent in addition to being motionless throughout the poem. It would not be challenging to view the
irony in a cast of teachers who are silent and possibly unable to instruct.

Gift Giving In Beowulf
Seamus Heaney s Beowulf is a translated literary work from the Anglo Saxon era which puts
emphasis on countless themes, such as, being a warrior, religion and wealth. Over the course of the
poem, the speaker puts emphasis on material possessions, which is shown through the act of gift
giving. Some argue that the importance put gift giving and wealth in Beowulf, is to present a
generous attitude however, it is evident that the purpose of this act is purely selfish. Parts of the
poem like, Hrothgar giving Beowulf gold and treasures after his conquests, Grendel not wanting to
pay a wergild, and Hrothgar paying money to the Wulfings for Beowulf s father are all examples of
this.
For insistence, the way in which Hrothgar gives Beowulf all those treasures appear to be out of
respect and honor, however, this could be a manner to gain and retain his support. The King
presents Beowulf with numerous treasures that vary between gold and horses, armor and swords,
and he even presents a reward to the other men who fought with him. The following quotation
explains Beowulf s thought on the matter. So Beowulf drank his drink at ease; / it was hardly a
shame to be showered with such gifts / in front of the hall troops. (Heaney 1024 1026) Beowulf
gladly accepts the gifts that are being thrust upon him, without putting much thought into it and
thinking only about his reputation. This is shown through the speaker s word choice and the
carefree tone of the lines. Regardless of that, it is

Impact Of Globalization On The Changing Process Of...
Introduction
Although the organisational aspects and spatial aspects must also be looked at, the flows of
globalisation including economic, environmental, political and cultural change must be looked at in
terms of reconstructing places and specific communities (Knox and Marston, 2016). Global
networks allow the flows of globalisation to be reconstructed rather than effaced. I will focus on the
economic impact of globalisation on the changing process of economic character and development
in London and Sydney.
Economic globalisation has been defined by (Cloke, Crang and Goodwin, 2013 p.414), As the
growing integration and interconnectedness of a range of different dimensions of the world

A large portion of the establishments of todays apparently new global wonders go back in any event
to the time of imperialism, at times prior. Besides, numerous global issues are exceedingly
perplexing and show incredible spatial fluctuation, in this manner significance there are no simple

Globalisation of the capitalist world has vastly increased since World War Two with the growing
innovation of technology and communication, this has created a broadening global connectivity
(Knox and Marston, 2016 pg 86). Which with theses new innovations brings a quicker and more
compelling method for transportation and correspondence in places like London, helping to
increase economic global connectivity.
Globalisation has created a number of serious issues concerning environmental ,health, core
periphery disparity and security issues (Knox and Marston, 2016 pg. 88).These issues are reflected
in London urban development as this place has been resisted and subverted by the structures of
globalisation in terms of economic issues.
The capitalist and colonial flows of globalisation have allowed but the creation of world cities like
London, New York, Parisand Tokyo. These cities London in particular are dominant economic and

Man the Hunter Revisited
Man the Hunter: Revisited In 1966, a group of about fifty anthropologists met in Chicago for a
conference that would later known as the Man the Hunter meeting. The meeting contrasted with
earlier scholarship and presented a Hollywood approach to the topic of early man, one where our
ancestors were strong, powerful, and in control of their environment. Anthropologists Sherwood L.
Washburn and C.S. Lancaster (1968), both present at the conference claimed, our intellect, interests,
emotions, and basic social life all are evolutionary products of the success of the hunting adaptation
. The book Man the Hunter that emerged from the conference forced a re evaluation of human

Additionally, the sexual division of labor was given more attention and there was recognition of the
importance of the female contribution given to sustaining early modern human society. As a result
of the research, the gatherer female emerged and in many ways surpassed the male hunter as the
foundation of early modern human society. The female gatherer trumped the male hunter.
Ultimately, the work of the feminist anthropologists was significant because it discredited the male
centric theory of the 1960 s, emasculated the role of man, but provided a more balanced and
accurate perspective regarding the role of women in early human society. Progressing into the
modern era, research has again refocused the academic microscope on the once chastised man the
hunter theory. Contrasting with earlier scholarship, Michael P. Richards and Erik Trinkhaus (2009)
proved Neanderthals and early modern humans relied on meat and hunting for subsistence. They
did so through comparative isotopic analysis of nitrogen and carbon isotope values to compare
protein consumption between early modern humans, Neanderthals, and local fauna. For example,
the Oase 1 (the oldest directly dated modern human in Europe) has a nitrogen level that is 10.8%
higher than the ibex and 8.0% higher than the red deer.

Pro Football Research Paper
Football There s so much to football. It s really fascinating and fun if you know how to play.
Football is a really interesting sport to play and learn about according to these categories: the
history of football, the positions, training, stats, and also famous players. The history of how
football started is so fascinating, because it used to be called the American Professional Football
Association or { APFA}. Then it was renamed as what we know now as the NFL in the 1922.
The first game of Pro Football started in 1892 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Former Yale Star
William Pudge Heffelfinger got paid $500 to play a single game with the Allegheny Athletic

Glorification In The Iliad
In ancient Greek culture social status was based on prominence and rank. This prepotency over the
culture is shown in the epic poem, The Iliad of Homer. Great vitality is exhibited by the characters
in the poem. The need for glory, honor, and eternal remembrance is mentioned numerous times
from beginning to end in this composition. Great honor comes with great responsibility. Glory
should come with wisdom. Homer presents this idea in various ways. This theme is woven through
The Iliadshowing the foundation of dignified heroes and self glorification. This epic poem
eulogizes the acts of chivalry executed by the men during the Trojan War. My friends, quit
yourselves like brave men, and shun dishonour in one another s eyes amid the stress of the
battle. They that shun dishonour more often live than get killed, but they that fly save neither
life nor name ( Homer Book 5). Agamemnon, the son of Atreus, tells the soldiers that they are to
be courageous in battle and their good deeds will carry through with them until death, but that
those who are glorious will seek death long after the cowards and deceivers. Those that are loyal
to their society will be brought to mind as ideal and rewarded by the gods and their
commonwealth. In The Iliad, Homer s description of a noble hero is one that will have enough
bravery to fight in battle. The desire the be godlike is voiced countless times from the Greek
figures in the composition. Glory will prevail if wisdom and responsibility is shown by in a
person s character. The outcome of the actions of these warriors is battle and bloodshed as the way
to achieve this glory. Achillesis the main war hero in the poem. He is passionate, enraged, and
vain. The temper Achilles possesses causes the atrocious actions he commits. As courageous as
he was, he was unable at first to grasp the concept of pure character. After his actions and their
consequences become clear, he begins to understand the meaning of ones true self. This gives
Achilles a purpose: to chose between life and dignity. Hector is known for being the most
courageous warrior of all Troy. He is the Trojan warrior that seizes the need for battle. In the poem
he becomes Achilles enemy after

  • 2. Women Within The Grecian Culture Ancient Greece as a place and period time in our extensive history was a place of patriarchal power, controlled almost entirely by the masculine sphere and association with the Gods. It was a time in history that produced some of the most famous thinkers however they were all men. Women within the Grecian culture where very much the passive sex, confined to housework and almost never educated. It is interesting therefore that the characters that have emerged at the exposure of the phallic philosophical pen still remain as an ally to the feminist movement and are relevant to our way of thinking today, acting as feminist pioneers both in theory and literature, helping the canon evolve years after being written. At a time where scientific... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Medea, the Gorgon monster who seduces men, turning them to stone and Antigone who is arguably still one of the most powerful images we have of female strength to date. In their own right and agency, they all act as feminist pioneers Sophocles Antigone, along with Medea are potentially the best example we have for how Myth has shaped and developed the feminist movement. Sophocles drama Antigone, written around 441 BCE, is one of his three Theban plays that chronicle the dark fortunes of the house of Oedipus, king of Thebes. After Oedipus death, there is a struggle over the kingship between his two sons Eteocles and Polyneices. The army of Polyneices marches on Thebes and is defeated, but both brothers are killed in the battle. The new ruler, Creon, decrees that whereas Eteocles will be buried with full honours for defending the city, the rebel Polyneices must be denied holy rites and left to rot in the field and if anyone disobeys him they are to be punished by death. The state and patriarchy take high place within the novel as it does in many Grecian teaching places. The play was used to teach the subjects of the citadel about respect for the law and respect for society. We must therefore ask questions concerning the place of a feminine tragic hero, and the effect that it would have had. Antigone as a rebellious character raises ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Why Sales And Per Capita Per Capita and sales would be easily related as Per Capita would be based upon each person s salary. If an individual s salary is increased it would, in turn, make it more feasible for said person to be able to make extra purchases that they previously wouldn t. This would explain why sales and Per Capita are positively related. Many variables would play a role in the salesdecision as well. Variables Numerous variables are to be considered when making a large purchase. Some of those variables would include competitor advertising, competitor dealer discounts, introductions of new competitive models. Other variables that would be considered would be the age and gender of the purchaser, also traits and characteristics of the purchaser ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dependent Variables. Dependent variables are dependent upon the independent variable and would be likely to change as the independent variable changes. With age changing a person s wants or needs would also change. A person that is young and single would most likely not come to a car lot to purchase a minivan whereas a person that has begun a family would consider this purchase. A teenager that has just received their license is most likely not going to purchase a large family vehicle as well. Mattingly mentions that dependent variables are akin to phenomena; selection of dependent variables, therefore, should be based on the phenomenon of interest rather than some context (Dependent Variables, p. 237). Thus saying that dependent variables should be based on occurrences or facts that are of interest to the researcher, rather than just as a method of research. Moderating Variables. Moderating variables are another form of independent variables. These variables will have a significant effect on the independent variables and the dependent variables relationship (Cooper Schindler. p. 56). Moderating variables would include the variables such as competitors advertising, competitive dealer discounts, and the introduction of new competitive models. These variables are outside the control of the original automobile manufacturer, but using these variables would most definitely have an effect on the relationship in the independent and dependent variables. ... • 4. Smoking In Periodontal Disease (C)Biological Effects of Smoking in Periodontal Disease: Tobacco smoke contains carbon monoxide (CO) which will lower the oxygen(Oв‚‚) saturation of haemoglobin in healthy gingiva. Oxygen tension within the pockets was substantially reduced in smokers. This may favour the growth of anaerobic bacteria, even in the shallower pockets 21.The local host response to bacteria, which initiates periodontitis, includes the recruitment of leukocytes and the subsequent release of infiammatory mediators and cytokines such as interleukin (IL 1,6,8,10,12) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF alpha). Researchers have tried to study a possible relationship between smoking, stress and cytokine production.15 Giannopoulou studied cytokines in the pathogenesis of periodontal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If smoking is associated with increased risk for periodontal disease, a reduction or elimination of tobacco use should reduce this risk and should be beneficial to the patient. There is good evidence that the occurrence of periodontal disease is less in previous smokers than in those who continue to smoke. Fullmer found that microbial profiles differed extensively between smokers and quitters at 6 and 12 months following smoking termination. The microbial community in smokers was similar to the baseline, while quitters demonstrated radically more divergent profiles. Changes in bacterial levels contributed to this shift. These findings reveal a vital role for smoking cessation in changing the subgingival biofilm and suggest a mechanism for enhanced periodontal health linked with smoking termination.10In a ten year radiographic follow up of alveolar bone loss, it was reported that progression of bone loss was significantly retarded in those who had given up smoking during the study, compared with those who sustained to smoke (Bolin et al., 2003)(X). Even though there may be conflicts in the research, particularly concerning smoking s effect on the microflora, there is very strong substantiation of more severe dose related periodontal destruction among smokers and a return to a healthier status once periodontal remedy and smoking cessation ... • 5. Alzbeta Letters Home September 13th, 1939, was a very special day for me and my wife Alzbeta. It is the day of Rosh Hashanah, the first day of the jewish calendar. The only problem was, we couldn t celebrate with our family and our friends from Nozyk Synagogue, due to us being fearful of the Germans invading Poland. It was more of a day of sadness; I was going to have to enlist in the polish army soon to fight the germans on the front lines. My grandfather had died in the great war during the battle of the somme, and my parents didn t want me to suffer a similar fate. Unfortunately for them, my country needed me, and I would have to go whether I wanted to or not. Today was my wife and I s 3rd anniversary, and we planned to go on a trip to Czechoslovakia. We also went there on our honeymoon, and decided to go there every other year afterwards. I still remember our wedding day, my father was crying tears of joy, proud of how much his son had grown up. The test to get into the army was nothing special; just a physical and a few questions, and some training for a few days. Everyone else was in cabins, while we were given tents. We thought maybe they ran out of room, but then we noticed some of the cabins looking empty and lifeless, while we could clearly see our other comrades inside warm cabins. • 6. Adversity In The Glass Castle By Jeannette Walls Colson Whitehead once said, Let the broken glass be broken glass, let it splinter into smaller pieces and dust and scatter. Let the cracks between things widen until they are no longer cracks but the new places for things . In the memoir The Glass Castle, author Jeannette Walls faces despair and turmoil as a result of her impoverished and dysfunctional upbringing. As Jeannette grows up, she watches her father Rex fail to reach his full potential and his dream to build a Glass Castle shatter as his alcoholismtakes control. Aware of the devastation her father was causing, she begins to slowly lose faith in him but doesn t fail to escape her destructive household and pursue her dreams of becoming a journalist. Due to her parents lack of parenting and being forced to fend for herself, Jeannette developed a sense of responsibility to care for others and make amends to improve the familys lifestyle. Despite the turbulence and destruction her parents had caused over the years, unlike her father, Jeannette was able to find the strength to overcome obstacles, developing characteristics that ultimately lead her to achieving her dream, thus illustrating that adversity has the power to shape one s identity. While her father s dismisses his destructive nature, Jeannette becomes conscious of his actions which motivates her to make amends in hopes of leaving their desolate life. As a child he was exposed to the strict religion and meticulous order of Japanese society, while also being a witness to the devastation of a massive earthquake on 1 September, 1923. Through the great earthquake, Kurosawa wrote, I learnt not only of the extra ordinary powers of nature, but of the extra ordinary things that lie in human hearts (Something Like.. p.23). Similar to Shakespeare, Kurosawa shared the intent to explore the conflicts of an individual s emotions and internal self, while allowing it to erupt on a cosmic scale (usually in all out war). • 10. Use Of Household Wastewater And Convert It Into Usable... Greywater systems are a way to use household wastewater and convert it into usable water for other purposes. For example, wastewater from showers, washing machines, and dishwater can be reused, mainly for landscape irrigation. Greywater is reusable due to the fact that the water being used does not come in contact with feces from toilets, hence its reusability. Although greywatermay look dirty, it is clean enough for the use in the watering of a lawn or landscaping. These greywater systems have been improved throughout the years from when the systems were first legalized in 1989 to the advanced systems available today. The use of greywater systems was not legalized until August of 1989 in Santa Barbara, California. By May of 1991, five ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Scientists have been looking for ways to reuse water, because as water energy demands and environmental needs grow water recycling will play a bigger role in our overall water supply. With the help of scientific research, water recycling, along with water conservation and efficiency will allow us to sustainably manage our important water resources. There are many different practices that scientists have tried, but greywater systems are the most cost efficient and easiest to be used within a household. Some of the other options to a Greywater system would be sedimentation, biological oxidation, and filtration. Sedimentation is the process in which water is separated from solids through the force of gravity. Wastewateris placed in a primary sedimentation tank giving the water an opportunity to separate. This technique is the primary treatment for sewage. Biological oxidation is where the demand of oxygen within the wastewater is reduced, which then will also reduce the amount of active toxins within the wastewater. On page 3, according to the doctor, the instructions are, ... he mustn t get too excited, too hot, too cold, or too tired... must be treated gently. Disobeying these instructions can come with consequences. The doctor then goes on saying some movements could strain his weak heart and possibly kill him. Secondly, man vs. self. When Brother first proposed the idea of Doodle walking, Page 4 Doodle responds with, I can t walk, Brother,...Mama, the doctor everybody, He doesn t have a desire to learn how to walk because he s been influenced by everybody around him that he can t. • 12. How Did The Cold War Affect The Middle East What impact did the Cold War have on the Middle East? We see the cold war as a period of hostility, which ended in 1989 between the Soviet Union and the USA in which neither country fired shots at each other directly but engaged in proxy wars to propagate their opposing ideological views and expand their influence globally. The tentacles of the opposing sides spread globally and the Middle East was no exception and it is impossible to know what influence Oil had. In 1953 the countries of the Middle East were developing, post colonial and non aligned but the shah of Iran, supported by the USA was being challenged pro communist Iranian nationalists. On July 14, 1958, the Iraqi monarchy was overthrown in a military coup. The new government was led by General Abdul Karim Qasim who withdrew Iraq from the Baghdad Pact, opened diplomatic relations with Soviet Union and adopted a non aligned stance. The organization dropped the name Baghdad Pact in favor of CENTO at that time. CENTO did little to prevent the expansion of Soviet influence to non member states in the area. Whatever containment value the pact might have had was lost when the Soviets leap frogged the member states, establishing close military and political relationships with governments in Egypt, Syria, Iraq, the People s Democratic Republic of Yemen, Somalia, and Libya. By 1970, the USSR had deployed over 20,000 troops to Egypt, and had established naval bases in Syria, Somalia, and P.D.R. Yemen. The Iranian revolution spelled the end of the organization in 1979, but in reality, it essentially had been finished since 1974, when Turkey invaded Cyprus. This led the United Kingdom to withdraw forces that had been earmarked to the alliance,[citation needed] and the United States Congress halted Turkish military aid despite two Presidential vetoes.[5] With the fall of the Iranian monarchy, whatever remaining rationale for the organization was lost. Perception of the World and False Images from White Noise Don DeLillo s award winning novel White Noise takes the idea of the supremacy of false images to the extreme. Through various scenarios, such as the airborne toxic event and the Dylar dilemma, DeLillo critiques contemporary society s over dependence on false images. The characters in the novel that exemplify this over dependence appear humorous on one hand, yet tragic on the other. The humor comes from the novel s characters behaving like cartoon characters who continually get hurt, but keep coming back for more. The scene involves Scar who wants to kill his royal relatives by trapping them under the crowd of thousands running wildebeests. Occasionally, there s an effect that the directors want in a film that would be virtually impossible to do with traditional animation techniques, explains CGI supervisor Scott Johnston. That s where computer animation can sometimes make a difference. A stampede of thousands of wildebeests would be too laborious to create by hand but animators working with computers can figure out what the behaviour of the animal is and replicate it. They created the leaders and the followers so logically, the followers had to follow the leaders but at the same time avoiding each other because they did not want the wildebeests to crash into each other. The next step was to match them into the background. The CGI crew built the 3 dimensional grid stages which matched the perspective and the look of the background which was going to be in the scene. Then they placed one of the simulations on the grid and replaced the small magnets with the wildebeests running. The different angles of the camera gave the audience the possibility to see the wildebeests running either over the camera or under or even zoomed in the crowd. In terms of color, the animators wanted the wildebeests to be slightly of different color so they gave them random wild colors. It was made with the purpose that the director now could say what exactly he liked or disliked and what he wanted to change in the particular wildebeest in the scene. When they put this scene in the film for a draft version, the shades of grey were applied to match the black and white film. And then in final color, they gave them each different coloring but within a very limited range of shading: some of them became slightly lighter grey, some of them darker grey. Porter s five force model demonstrates that the Threat of New Entrant, the Threat of Substitute Products or services, the Bargaining Power of Buyers, the Bargaining Power of Suppliers and the Rivalry among the Existing Competitors are the forces that shape the industry competition. Throughout the investigation of GM Korea, factors from the five forces model except for the Bargaining Power of Suppliers, will be discussed briefly regarding the failure of GM Korea. Research tells us that, GM Korea sold in total of 780,518 vehicles during the year 2013; 629,478 of the total productions were exported to the world, the remaining 151,040 vehicles were managed to sell within Korea. Compared to the sales in 2012, the domestic performance was actually raised by 25%, though oversea orders reduced 13.2% and lead to a 6.2% reduction in total sales. For real time requirements of multimedia applications faster computations need to be performed. To fulfill such requirements of video compression a parallel computational algorithm can be implemented. In this thesis, the parallelism of multi core architecture was exploited using block matching algorithm. The test implementation of the algorithm was done on MATLAB. The parallel model was designed using OpenMP and its implementation was tested on multi core architectures. The parallel implementation divides a current frame into independent macro blocks and each block is allotted to OpenMP section which then assigns it to a thread for performing the computations. The result of the implementation shows speedier computations with effective utilization of multi cores. This work suggests a promising approach which can further be developed and exploited. Over the time organisms have evolved to become better acclimated to the environment they live in such that reproduction and survival requirements are met. Even so, not every organism born is viable or produce progeny that survive and not every progeny that survives lives long enough to reproduce again. Only those who are strong and successful in reproducing are selected to survive. The process of Natural Selection functions as the key to maintain the balance of the environment. Similarly, genes also work towards the same motive, replication. All genes on the other hand follow the Mendelian Inheritance theory , which allows genes to segregate into only 50% of the offspring exhibit the genotypes of genes from both parents in a 1:1 ratio. However, every commonly accepted system has its offenders. Similarly, offenders of the ancient gene pathway, come in the form of selfish genetic elements who work around the system and use other ways to increase in abundance, most often at the cost of the host s health. Surprisingly, these selfish elements are still among the successful survivors though they do not follow the rules. One curious case of such an element is the segregation distorter gene found in all populations of a species of fly known as Drosophila melanogaster. I think this amendment protects the rights of homosexuals. Same sex marriage should be legal because all individuals have the same right in society; same sex couples can constitute a good based family. It is just a way to make official a common union nowadays, even there are religious issue; because it is not related to polygamy; and because love matters and it does not differ in nature according to the sex of its object or the person who experiences it. Prior to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling, same sex marriage is only legal in some states. Some states do not agree with same sex marriage. Same sex marriage was legal in 36 states and the District of Columbia. In 19 of those states. (Nascri). I think same sex marriage should be legal. Violent scenes, among other elements, allow for this to occur in a novel. Destruction of identity, another theme of the novel, relates to the violent scenes. • 46. Discrimination Through Ethical Norms Essay Analyzing Discrimination through Mythical Norms An in depth analysis of Canadian law and it s process can account for the indication in development of a mythical norm. A specific staple has been made in our society that has shaped the way in which our expectations are altered and cropped to an extenuating level that puts individuals in our society at a disadvantage. This can be illustrated through discrimination of sexism and racism which expose the many forms of inequality that are reproduced in our legal system and society today. A mythical norm is often a narrow set of characteristics that often exclude and disadvantage a broad spectrum of people. When reading Lorde s (Lorde, 1995 p.192) interpretation of a mythical norm she writes Somewhere, on the edge of consciousness, there is what I call a mythical norm, which each of us within our hearts know that is not me. This refers to how a mythical norm is often described or referred to as a white, thin, male, young, heterosexual, christian, financially secure as Barbara Perry says (Perry, 2011 p. 57) when discussing that these characteristics are a trapping of power that is extremely present in society, and often steers the ways in which we rationalize things. Surely it is believable that the faculty created by Gluck would be teaching a set of students neatly arranged as if they were stuffed dolls to continue to be silent. Over the course of the poem, the speaker puts emphasis on material possessions, which is shown through the act of gift giving. Some argue that the importance put gift giving and wealth in Beowulf, is to present a generous attitude however, it is evident that the purpose of this act is purely selfish. Parts of the poem like, Hrothgar giving Beowulf gold and treasures after his conquests, Grendel not wanting to pay a wergild, and Hrothgar paying money to the Wulfings for Beowulf s father are all examples of this. For insistence, the way in which Hrothgar gives Beowulf all those treasures appear to be out of respect and honor, however, this could be a manner to gain and retain his support. The King presents Beowulf with numerous treasures that vary between gold and horses, armor and swords, and he even presents a reward to the other men who fought with him. The following quotation explains Beowulf s thought on the matter. So Beowulf drank his drink at ease; / it was hardly a shame to be showered with such gifts / in front of the hall troops. • 53. Man the Hunter Revisited Man the Hunter: Revisited In 1966, a group of about fifty anthropologists met in Chicago for a conference that would later known as the Man the Hunter meeting. The meeting contrasted with earlier scholarship and presented a Hollywood approach to the topic of early man, one where our ancestors were strong, powerful, and in control of their environment. Anthropologists Sherwood L. Washburn and C.S. Lancaster (1968), both present at the conference claimed, our intellect, interests, emotions, and basic social life all are evolutionary products of the success of the hunting adaptation . The book Man the Hunter that emerged from the conference forced a re evaluation of human subsistence strategies and the role of the hunter in human... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Additionally, the sexual division of labor was given more attention and there was recognition of the importance of the female contribution given to sustaining early modern human society. As a result of the research, the gatherer female emerged and in many ways surpassed the male hunter as the foundation of early modern human society. The female gatherer trumped the male hunter. Ultimately, the work of the feminist anthropologists was significant because it discredited the male centric theory of the 1960 s, emasculated the role of man, but provided a more balanced and accurate perspective regarding the role of women in early human society. Progressing into the modern era, research has again refocused the academic microscope on the once chastised man the hunter theory. Contrasting with earlier scholarship, Michael P. Richards and Erik Trinkhaus (2009) proved Neanderthals and early modern humans relied on meat and hunting for subsistence. They did so through comparative isotopic analysis of nitrogen and carbon isotope values to compare protein consumption between early modern humans, Neanderthals, and local fauna. For example, the Oase 1 (the oldest directly dated modern human in Europe) has a nitrogen level that is 10.8% higher than the ibex and 8.0% higher than the red deer. ... • 55. Glorification In The Iliad In ancient Greek culture social status was based on prominence and rank. This prepotency over the culture is shown in the epic poem, The Iliad of Homer. Great vitality is exhibited by the characters in the poem. The need for glory, honor, and eternal remembrance is mentioned numerous times from beginning to end in this composition. Great honor comes with great responsibility. Glory should come with wisdom. Homer presents this idea in various ways. This theme is woven through The Iliadshowing the foundation of dignified heroes and self glorification. This epic poem eulogizes the acts of chivalry executed by the men during the Trojan War. My friends, quit yourselves like brave men, and shun dishonour in one another s eyes amid the stress of the battle. They that shun dishonour more often live than get killed, but they that fly save neither life nor name ( Homer Book 5). Agamemnon, the son of Atreus, tells the soldiers that they are to be courageous in battle and their good deeds will carry through with them until death, but that those who are glorious will seek death long after the cowards and deceivers. Those that are loyal to their society will be brought to mind as ideal and rewarded by the gods and their commonwealth. In The Iliad, Homer s description of a noble hero is one that will have enough bravery to fight in battle. The desire the be godlike is voiced countless times from the Greek figures in the composition. Glory will prevail if wisdom and responsibility is shown by in a person s character. The outcome of the actions of these warriors is battle and bloodshed as the way to achieve this glory. Achillesis the main war hero in the poem. He is passionate, enraged, and vain. The temper Achilles possesses causes the atrocious actions he commits. As courageous as he was, he was unable at first to grasp the concept of pure character. After his actions and their consequences become clear, he begins to understand the meaning of ones true self. This gives Achilles a purpose: to chose between life and dignity. Hector is known for being the most courageous warrior of all Troy. He is the Trojan warrior that seizes the need for battle. In the poem he becomes Achilles enemy after ...
