Comparing Anthem, The Fountainhead And Atlas Shrugged
The Triumphant Characters of Anthem, The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged
In reading the fiction works of Ayn Rand, one becomes quickly aware of her use of characterization to
display a set of mores that apply to a group in today s society she is describing. In Anthem, for
instance, even the names hold significance toward the point of the story. The name Liberty 5 3000, a
gross smear of the philosophy of her world, becomes The Golden One, and then Gaea in the eyes of
the protagonist. This use of a name, a face, to convey the message of a group becomes a common
thread through all four of Miss Rand s novels. The Fountainhead is no exception. Though the names
don t have quite the amount of significance, the characters presented are ... Show more content on

Why are you saying this to me? That s not what you want to say. That s not what you did.
That s why I m saying it! Because that s what I did!
Though Miss Rand s true thoughts about these two characters are known only to her, it comes across
to the reader that Henry had everything except that total honesty to oneself that is required of an artist
of skill. He tried to save Roark from what he saw as a certain fate: his own.
To an observant reader, Peter Keating and Ellsworth Toohey have the most interesting interplay in the
book. A fine example of this can be found on page 60 where Peter says to Katie:
You see, Katie, you don t know me. I m the kind that uses people. I don t want to use you.
This is a sad commentary on the political system if there ever was one. The question who is using who
constantly comes to mind when lines of this sort between characters of this sort show up in Miss Rand
s pages. Peter spends the part of his life covered by this story as a tool of the likes of Toohey, and he
still has the audacity to think that he is in power.
At this point in the book, however, little does the reader realize Toohey s power with people. The
scene where Peter tells Toohey that he sold Dominique shows a very clear picture of a broken man
facing Toohey, his breaker :
You re the only friend I ve got. I ... I m not even friendly with myself, but you are. With me, I mean,
aren t you, Ellsworth?
But of course. Which

Advancing the Individual s Knowledge of the Holocaust Essay
By comparing, analyzing and questioning the validity of Maus I and II, Night, Night and Fog,
nonfictional historical accounts and a poem, called Already Embraced by the Arm of Heavenly Solace,
found in Europe in the Contemporary World, Schindler s List and the Return to Auschwitz we may
determine to what degree these sources serve to advance humanity s understanding of the holocaust.
The holocaust can be explained as the historical event in which the Nazi s, who came to power in
Germany in January 1933, and its collaborators murdered and persecuted approximately six million
Jews. This came about because of the German belief that they were racially superior and the Jews
were an alien threat to the German state. For humanity to advance in ... Show more content on

The conclusions of the various sources, brought on by the analysis of the issues above and by
comparing these sources to each other, determined that overall these sources have a high degree in
serving to further man s understanding of the holocaust.
By categorizing the two movies, Night and Fog and Schindler s List, together we are able to better
analyze and contrast the two similar yet different sources. First off, both these sources can be deemed
accountable because they use more than one source. The documentary, Night and Fog, uses two
different survivors of the holocaust as well as various other sources. Schindler s List also relied on
more than one person s account of the situation to write the movie s script. This is unlike the sources
such as Return to Auschwitz, written by the first hand account of Kitty Hart , and Night, written by
Elie Wiesel who also had first hand experiences , that depend on one person s account or report of the
situation to tell the story. However, the written work isn t used for entertainment purposes, like
Schindler s List is, and therefore is less likely to be changed to draw attention or gain financially.
Schindler s List is a famous movie used to

The Internal Combustion Engine
1 Introduction
Since the advent of the internal combustion engine nearly two centuries ago, humans have become
increasingly reliant on fuel to power these engines. Our only method, historically, for obtaining this
fuel is to probe the earth and oceans until crude oil is struck. Crude oil is termed a fossil fuel as it
takes hundreds of millions of years to form. Crude oil is extracted from a geological reservoir and
subsequently refined into the various fuels which we use at ever increasing rates (petroleum, diesel,
aviation fuel etc). Unfortunately we are not finding new oil deposits at anything like the rates we are
consuming, so logically we will eventually run out. Many of the alternate energy sources currently
available (electric engines, fuel cells and ethanol) have low energy density and do not scale well to
larger vehicles like aeroplanes and trucks. Therefore finding new renewable sources of energy to
power our current and future devices is paramount to our continuation as a successful species.
This project focuses on the prokaryotic enzyme, diacylglycerol acyltransferase 1 DGAT1 (not to be
confused with eukaryotic DGA1P a protein which provides the same function but is very different in
sequence and structure). This enzyme is encoded by the atf1 gene in Rhodococcus opacus PD630.
DGAT is important because it catalyses the final, rate limiting step, in the Kennedy pathway. This step
is the transfer of an acyl group from acyl CoA to diacylglycerol, creating

Crisis
Crisis
Crisis! Anytime we, as a society, hear this word our ears perk up and the speaker has our attention.
Usually when we hear crisis we think that it is something with the distinct possibility of a highly
undesirable outcome (Merriam Webster) that calls for immediate response. President George W. Bush
says that we are in a national energy crisis (Is Yucca Mountain in Nevada a safe disposal site?). Bush
has proposed a solution, storing all of our nation s nuclear waste in Nevada s Yucca Mountain, but has
been met with much resistance from Nevada residents and politicians and environmental groups.
The proposal is that Yucca Mountain will be a permanent disposal facility for two types of nuclear
energy. Spent energy is from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lisa Gue, a policy analyst with Public Citizen says, Yucca Mountain is an unsuitable site for an
unsuitable project.
Many of the environmentalists oppose Yucca Mountain because they believe that the waste could
contaminate our water supply. They believe that water could corrode the canisters and then the United
States would be confronting a catastrophe. However, a study, conducted by the DOE, found that even
if water would erode the canisters of waste, the waste would still have to pass through one thousand
feet of rock to contaminate an underground water supply. Obviously, this fifteen year study, completed
in 1998, greatly encouraged progression towards completion of Yucca Mountain. Despite these
findings, skeptics still believe that water could be contaminated and claim that because the study was
conducted by the DOE which is pro Yucca Mountain that it should be disregarded as biased.
The largest problem confronting Yucca Mountain is transporting the radioactive waste from temporary
storage sites. The waste would be transported by truck and train. Inevitably, accidents would occur
during this process. The DOE says that special shipping casks should prevent any major impacts from
any accidents. Critics, who have dubbed the Yucca Mountain plan Mobile Chernobyl, say that the
combination of diesel fuel fires and radioactive waste could seriously pollute our nation s

The Importance Of Racial Prejudice And Impitincy
RACIAL PREJUDICE AND COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT Throughout the past century, American
society has made massive steps in endorsing (declare one s public approval) equality and diminishing
prejudice among different racial and ethnic minority groups. However, the Americans experience with
prejudice is quite different from those of ethnic communities (Salvatore Shelton 2007). Therefore,
according to this paper, there are two main independent variables identified that shapes an individuals
managing ability, which then determines his cognitive disruption following an encounter illustrated by
prejudice. Moreover, it suggests that there is group level variation with members of the privileged and
disadvantaged groups in their experiences with prejudice. Whites do not think of themselves as
possible targets of prejudice. They are however less mindful of stigma than the blacks. Whites are
therefore relatively insensitive to slight cues of prejudice regardless of the targeted race. Therefore,
there is a calculation that whites would not experience cognitive disruption after they are exposed to
vague prejudice. It is rather expected that whites, in contrast to blacks, would undergo through
substantial disruption when exposed to blatant prejudice. This is mainly because explicit racism is
reasonably uncommon and the whites are not inclined into developing the coping skills that would
shield them from cognitive disruption in such situations (Salvatore Shelton 2007). The

Somali Pirates Research Paper
There are many pirates in the Somalian waters. Somalia is a place in East Africa. The Somali pirates
are a criminal enterprise that is getting in millions of dollars in ransom payments. They have been
hijacking ships since the year 2005. Port officials in Somalia are accepting bribes from the pirates to
enter the Somali waters (Scott Baldauf 1). These Somali Pirates resorted to piracy because of an
economic devastation that happened in Somalia in the 90s. The pirates are Somalians who are raiding
ships that come nearby Somalia. They carefully select a ship to raid. They will want to raid cargo
ships. After they find a ship to raid, they then use force to get into the ship. The pirates carry various
guns to help to get on board the ship. After they manage to get on the ship, they start to take all the
valuables on the ship (Hamza Mohamed 1). They then take the workers of the ship as hostage to gain
more money for their safe return. In the movie, Captain Phillips, the pirates that are in the movie are

The Identity Of A New Zealand Essay
Maori identity in New Zealand has been aspersed negatively by mainstream media (Nairn et al., 2012.,
p. 39) and has created a despicable and contempt perception of their ethnicity. This will be my main
focus, by referring to the ideas of Arjun Appadurai s media and ideoscapes as a way of Maori being
portrayed as menances to society because of the focus on the assumption that Maori are taking
advantage of the system or are criminals, as can be seen in The New Zealand Herald, Police Ten 7 (a
popular New Zealand program) and some of the latest statistics from the Department of Corrections
and Quick Stats. I will attempt to justify my point of how Maori can be considered a diasporic
community in New Zealand, based on the ideas of Clifford (1994) and Safran (1991) who explore the
world of the forever changing definition of diaspora.
My argument: That the ideas of Arjun Appadurai s media and ideoscapes best explain how the identity
of diasporic Maori has been created in New Zealand.
What can we call identity? Identity has been linked to self or many selves to serve the society one is in
(James, 1980, p. 294), but one theory I quite liked, was the idea that self and society help to shape one
another by societal influence on one self and the outcomes of society by ones actions in response to
the influence (Ashmore, Lee, 1997, p. 191). Personally this idea resonated well with me in the attempt
to define identity for Maori because it explains two things:

Observation On A Restaurant
On October 15, 2017 at approximately 10 AM, I woke up to go to Freddie s Restaurant to start my
observations. It was a nice morning, about 50 degrees and sunny with a slight breeze. I hopped into
my Chevy truck to head to the restaurant. There were cars zipping around the town because church
had just gotten let out, and families were going to get food somewhere.
Through my personal experiences, I know that Freddie s is a popular place to go on a Sunday. The
owner s daughter, Stephanie Cannon, is my middle brother s girlfriend (also my broker), and she
worked at the restaurant on its busiest days. She explained to me that many families enjoy gathering at
Freddie s for a traditional breakfast after their church service is finished. She also noted that Freddie s
offers some of the best food for a great price. On certain Sundays, there is a breakfast buffet that is
extremely popular, and there s a wide variety of food offered at those buffets. I also know the owners,
Mark and Sue Cannon, very well because they are obviously Stephanie s parents. Our families have
been very close ever since I was a little kid, and we ve eaten at Freddie s many times. During the
summer when my brother and Steph are home, we eat there occasionally. It s nice because we don t
even have to pay.
I had to pick up my brother, Derek, and Steph from her house because they wanted to go to breakfast
while I observed. We arrived at the restaurant, and there were a lot of cars parked outside the
restaurant.

Controlling Process in Management Essay
Controlling Process in Management
Controlling is directly related to planning. The controlling process ensures that plans are being
implemented properly. In the functions of management cycle planning, organizing, directing, and
controlling planning moves forward into all the other functions, and controlling reaches back.
Controlling is the final link in the functional chain of management activities and brings the functions
of management cycle full circle. Control is the process through which standards for performance of
people and processes are set, communicated, and applied. Effective control systems use mechanisms
to monitor activities and take corrective action, if necessary. The supervisor observes what happens

· Financial controls facilitate achieving the organization s profit motive. One method of financial
controls is budgets. Budgets allocate resources to important activities and provide supervisors with
quantitative standards against which to compare resource consumption.
They become control tools by pointing out deviations between the standard and actual consumption.
· Operations control methods assess how efficiently and effectively an organization s transformation
processes create goods and services.
Methods of transformation controls include Total Quality Management
(TQM) statistical process control and the inventory management control. Statistical process control is
the use of statistical methods and procedures to determine whether production operations are being
performed correctly, to detect any deviations, and to find and eliminate their causes. A control chart
displays the results of measurements over time and provides a visual means of determining whether a
specific process is staying within predefined limits. As long as the process variables fall within the
acceptable range, the system is in control. Measurements outside the limits are unacceptable or out of
control. Improvements in quality eliminate common causes of variation by adjusting the system or
redesigning the system.
· Inventory is a large cost for many organizations. The appropriate amount to

Roman Culture Depicted In Ridley Scott s Gladiator
In Ridley Scott s movie Gladiator, much of the storyline is based on facts about what life was like in
the Roman Empire. After the death of the much beloved emperor Marcus Aurelius, the reign of the
five good emperors came to an end. Emperors were a major part of Rome s history, civilization, and
rules. Although every factual story that Hollywood gets ahold of usually gets fantasized in one way or
another, this one gave a decently accurate depiction of Marcus Aurelius, gladiatorial training and
shows, Roman military, as well as depicting the battles that the Roman army fought. Things such as
the relationship between Aurelius and his son Commodus, the main character Maximus, and
Commodus and his sister Lucilla s relationship are very over ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

They were held in amphitheaters throughout the Empire and were often seen as not only a social but
also political gathering. The most famous and largest amphitheater was the Colosseum, which could
hold up to 50,000 audience members. This public slaughter of human beings was seen as a form of
entertainment and a way to get people s mind off of stressful things. These games were known to be
extremely bloody and terribly gruesome. The movie represents a pretty good depiction of what a real
gladiatorial show would look like. The Colosseum was used for other entertainment purposes outside
of gladiatorial shows such as mock naval battles depicting glorious victories in the name of Rome. To
this day we do not have any insight on how the Roman s could have flooded the Colosseum and kept
all of the water inside of it to host these events. In gladiatorial shows, the gladiators that fought were
criminals or slaves that were trained in combat at special gladiatorial schools. There are only a few
scenes in the movie that show the gladiators training, but they show the teamwork that was used in
some games in order for the gladiators to live. Most of the time, gladiators were used as sitting ducks.
They were set up against huge, burly men who could kill someone with their bare hands. These games
were held from dawn to dusk and also sometimes featured wild animals that had the capability to tear
gladiators to bits and pieces. Not only did animals face humans, but they were also paired up to fight
other wild animals until there was only one left standing. The animals that were most commonly used
in the games were buffaloes, bears, bulls, tigers, and lions. Also, they did not always give gladiators
weapons to defend themselves with; quite often they sent them out to fight with absolutely nothing.
During one of the games that Maximus is involved in, he has to kill several tigers and roman soldiers
with only one sword and

The turning point arrived soon. In January of 1994 Cisco systems failed. Thus the inability of the
system to perform forced towards the utilization of unauthorized methods for accessing the core
application database which lead to the corruption of Cisco s database. Consequently the company shut
down virtually for two days.
Seeking for a new start
After the shutdown managers realized that the autonomous approach was not sufficient. There was the
need for a more integrated action, indeed separated decisions among the departments would have
taken too long. As a result the company gathered an Implementation Team to investigate on the
replacement of the application.
Thanks to the previous experience of the SVP of manufacturing Carl Redfield it was clear that the
implementation of IT projects can take a long time to be effective. In order to make the
implementation as quick as possible Redfield suggested to implement the project all at once and to do
not personalize the new system. Projects that are divided into phases and customized tend to take
longer time to be efficient, and many times they tend to become only an adaptation of the previous
method. He suggested also to make the implementation a priority for every department: the
involvement of the entire company is important for the effectiveness of the project.
Other than selecting within the company the best components for the Implementation Team, it was

Frankenstein And Frankenstein Essay
Several fields have studied the relationship between creator and creation. The most significant aspect
of this research considers the difference between nature and nurture. Sociologists, psychologists,
scientists, and other professionals have tried to pin down the exact distinctions between these two
types of upbringings. In literature, the same questions have been asked and studied using fictional
characters, most famously in John Milton s Paradise Lost, in 1667, and Mary Shelley s Frankenstein,
in 1818. The complexity of the characters in these texts creates the theme of nature versus nurture
before they diverge and arrive at differing conclusions.
Many critics arose over the years to contest the main character of Milton s epic. Shelley, ... Show more

Due to his mistakes in creating his character of God, Shelley personified Victor Frankenstein as a cold
creator to provide a commentary on the harshness of Milton s God.
Some have called Milton s God evil and unloving such as Richard Bentley (Read). This criticism can
be attributed to the fact that Milton was cautious about creating a so called round character of God;
this caution caused this flat creator that has no real stake in creation. When the first words that God
speaks in Paradise Lost mock the fallen angels: Only begotten Son, seest thou what rage/ Transports
our adversary (Milton III . 80 ) it only confirms the fate that this character cannot be the hero of the
story. By doing this Milton created this malicious creator which inspired the cruelty that can clearly be
seen in Victor Frankenstein in terms of both his family and his creation. The use of cruelty in creators,
whether intentional or not determines the environment in which their creation lives.
Shelley draws inspiration from Milton s Paradise Lost not only for the vicious creator in the stories but
also the creations. In Milton s epic, God creates the father of humankind and the father of all demons.
The characterization of Frankenstein s monster highlights points of both Adam and Satan; even the
monster recognizes this within Shelley s work when he encounters Milton s

Basic Training Short Story

Basic Training
It s four o clock in the afternoon and the sun is still shining bright in Fort Jackson, South Carolina. It is
hot outside, about 99 degrees. My heart is pounding with fear of the unknown. The bus stops and the
doors fold open. A soldier comes running up the bus stairs in a round brown hat screaming at the top
of his lungs, Get off the bus, now soldiers! I jump out of my seat and immediately rush to the front of
the bus, along with about twenty other new recruits. I have no idea what to expect but have heard the

Private, He yells back at me. I start over and begin to count out loud, One Drill Sergeant, two Drill
Sergeant, and so on. While I am on my 30th sit up I begin to wonder how I am going to be able to
complete basic training. I have been here for 30 minutes and I am completely exhausted. I can not
catch my breath, my stomach muscles are burning for me to stop and my legs are so weak I do not
know how I am going to be able to stand up when the devil finally allows me to.
To this day I do not know how I managed to surpass the physical limits I endured in those eight
weeks. After the very first day I though it would be impossible. At the time this took place, I thought I
had made a huge mistake. There were so many times I wanted to tell my drill sergeant exactly where
he could go! I never gave up though. I pushed through the pain and eight weeks later came out of
basic training in the best shape I had ever been in my life. I could run two miles in ten minutes, push
out 80 pushups in two minutes and 78 sit ups in two minutes. Basic training taught me discipline,

A Group Of Advisory Councillors From Google
SUMMARY
A group of advisory councillors from Google wrote a report on The Right to Be Forgotten policy in
2015. This policy was created in an effort to offer a balance between freedom of expression and the
press. The Right to be Forgotten offers citizens the ability to request for their information to be
removed from the results of a Google search. The removal of these search results, or links, upon the
request of an individual is referred to as delisting (Floridi et al., 2015). Delisting allows web users to
maintain and protect their privacy by limiting the public s access to information about them.
It is important to note, however, that while citizens may apply to be delisted, Google does not have to
comply with this request. Google ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On the other hand, citizens should have the right to access information that is germane to the public.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE POLICY
The policy first outlines the nature of the rights at issue in the ruling. Google must decide whether the
general public should have the right to easily access an individual s information via the search engine.
Google must also consider if the individual requesting to delist experiences harm from [public]
accessibility to the information (Floridi et al., 2015, p. 6).
Next, the policy addresses the way in which Google must assess each delisting request according to
four key pieces of criteria: the data subject s role in public life, the nature of the information, the
source, and time (Floridi et al., 2015). When evaluating the data subject s role in public life, Google
considers three different types of citizens: individuals with a public personality (e.g. politicians),
individuals with no public personality (i.e. average citizens), and those with a defined role in public
life (e.g. school directors). Ultimately, the more involved a citizen is in the public sphere, the less
likely they are to be delisted.
Google also considers the nature of the information. Financial records, private contact information,
and false information, are all deemed worthy of privacy according to Google. If, however, the
information biases toward a public interest (e.g. information related to criminal offences),

Counties could get benefit from globalization of economy through international trading. However,
they also could suffer negative impacts of globalization. In modern society, the trades between
countries are usual and frequent. According to Robert, through international trading, the US citizens
could buy foreign products in lower prices. However, international trading is harmful for some
domestic companies (2013). For instance, if US and China all produce cars. Once both country open
its market to the world. China will lose its original competitive advantages because the U.S. auto
companies made better cars. The cause of this result is the diversity of competitive advantages. For
China, their competitive advantage is low labor costs but low technology. For the United States, they

Those country who was not in that unions will definitely has disadvantage on international trading.
Towards these types of problems, the US government made a lot of policies to protect US economy.

Allegory And Symbolism In Hawthorne s Young Goodman Brown
It is hard to read beyond the third paragraph of Young Goodman Brown without finding allegory and
symbolism. The opening seems realistic Goodman Brown, a young Puritan, leaves his home in
colonial Salem to take an overnight trip but his wife s name, Faith, immediately suggests a symbolic
reading. Before long, Brown s walk into the dream like forest seems like an allegorical trip into evil.
The idea that Hawthorne shows by this trip is that people are attracted to sin through temptation which
leads them towards a path of isolation and distrust. He develops this thought in the allegory and in
many symbols, particularly the staff, the pink ribbon, and Faith.
The allegory is about Goodman Brown following his temptation and how it is ... Show more content

The pink ribbons represent innocence, Faith wears those pink ribbons the pink ribbons of her cap (1),
so she is thought to be innocent and childlike but as it turns out she is a secret sinner attracted to sin
and temptation like everyone.
The imagery in Young Goodman Brown is very dark and gothic like. Throughout the story the narrator
tries to capture evil within the imagery. The first appearance of a dark imagery is when Goodman
Brown describes the road he takes towards the forest, he describes it as a dreary road (8) he also
describes all the trees of the forest to appear gloomy like. Another image the author paints is when
Goodman Brown is walking down the road he then says that there might be a devilish indian (9)
behind the trees. This image captures the evil and darkness that is going on in the forest and we can
see this clearly through the imagery. The imagery also ties back to the thematic statement.
Goodman Brown like every character in the story becomes tempted to sin. He admits that he is a
horrible person what wretch am I (7) for leaving Faith to follow his temptation. But he is attracted and
tempted to sin like every human being. His temptation leads him to become a stern, sad... distrustful
(72) man. After giving into the temptation of attending the meeting in the forest, he gives into evil and
does not know what to believe or trust anymore. All because he went away from his faith. Even

Gaining a Sense of Peace In the novel Dreaming in Cuban by Cristina Garcia, Cuba had an impact on
each character especially to Pilar. Pilar moved to New York when she was just a little girl. She felt like
she was unfamiliar with her heritage, which sparked the idea to move back to her homeland. Pilar s

book, Pilar has expressed several changes of heart towards Cuba. Although Pilar wanted to move back

When Lourdes said she was leaving the country, Pilar wouldn t let go of Celia because she didn t want
to leave her. Pilar states, Mom tried to pull me away but I clung to Abuela Celia and screamed at the

Sam s Role In Transitional Object
Sam, the tattoo artist, in Transitional Object is extremely important for both the development of the
body image theme and motherhood/womanhood because helps to give Mia confidence through her
tattoo and serves as a mother figure to her. To begin, Sam is very important for the developing body
image theme because despite losing her job, gaining a great amount of weight, losing her husband, and
making many sacrifices for her kids, she moved past all of those challenges, took online tattoo classes,
and made a new life for herself. She is also important to this theme because she gave Mia confidence
in herself through her tattoo, as she points out when she says, That scar was too standard. Sam has
embellished it. Now I have one breast and one Dignity.

Emily Dickinson And Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening
Poems are like snowflakes. While no two are the same, they all have common structures and themes.
One prevalent theme in poetry is that of death, which is present in both Because I Could Not Stop for
Death by Emily Dickinson and Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost. Dickinson
perceives death as a gentleman, while Frost perceives death as loneliness, which provides insight on
how the time periods of the poems, the genders of the authors, and the authors personal experiences
influence literature. A major factor of Emily Dickinson s style of poetry is the time period in which
she lived. Emily Dickinson was alive from 1830 to 1886 (Mackowiak and Batten, 1159), during which
the Second Great Awakening, Romanticism, and the United States Civil War took place. When
Dickinson was a teenager, the Second Great Awakening took hold, encouraging people to take hold of
their religion and practice once more. Thomas Ford discusses this in his book Heaven Beguiles the
Tired: Death in the Poetry of Emily Dickinson, reviewed by Jack Capps. Capps points out that Ford
repeatedly asserts that poetry, for Emily Dickinson, was but a substitute for the religious conversion
that would have allayed her fears of death and obviated her poetic utterance (227). Dickinson did not
blindly accept what religion told her to believe about death. Christianity depicts the idea of dying in a
peaceful way, then spending the rest of eternity in a mystical place. Instead, Emily Dickinson wanted

Using the information from your textbook and classroom discussion, prepare a minimum of 200 word
response to the following questions:
1. To what extent did the Era of Reconstruction create a New South?
On December 8, 1863, approximately 16 months before the North defeated the South in the Civil War,
Lincoln issued a proclamation that laid out his vision of Reconstruction. For example, laws were
passed requiring Southern states to adopt new constitutions in conformity with the U.S. Constitution,
and to ratify the 14th Amendment and grant blacks the right to vote. This was a drastic change because
before the reconstruction era African Americans were slaves and were not allowed to vote. The South
entire society was impacted by the Era of Reconstruction from the way they lived to how they made a
living. The Reconstruction Era implemented various changes to the South as for as the workforce with
a great emphasis on cash crops the majority of the crops grown in the South were being imported.
African Americans also were giving the right to actively participate in the government. A Rise of

King Henry Manipulation
Good morning/afternoon English teachers. All representations of people and politics are indeed acts of
manipulation as true political agendas must be hidden behind a misleading facade. Language plays a
particularly powerful role in portraying in these political representations. However ambiguous the
political motive may be, control is the ultimate goal in the world of politics. Contrary to popular
belief, not all acts of manipulation are inherently immoral or solely pragmatic. King Henry IV: Part 1
(1596 1597), the second historical play of the Henriad, by William Shakespeare, provides insight into
these ideas as his own work is as such a representation of people and politics of the Elizabethan Era,
two hundred years before his own time. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The portrayal of Prince Hal is exemplary of Shakespeare s use of manipulation to position the
audience to favour a political figure. Initially he sets himself a bad impression to the audience by
being brash and irresponsible. Prince Hal s relationship to Falstaff and company was a tool for him in
order to create for himself a notorious image which he could later shed and expose his true valor. At
the end of Act 1, Scene 2, Hal, through his soliloquy, shows that he has a completely different
perspective on his own actions, conceding that they are unsuitable for a King but that he is engaging in
this behaviour for a clear political purpose. Hal uses the central metaphor of the sun in his speech: Yet
herein will I imitate the sun (1.2.157) and creating imagery of the sun appearing from the clouds,
symbolising his glorious rise from his behaviour: Being wanted, he may be more wondered at/By
breaking through the foul and ugly mists (1.2.161 62). He ends with a rhyming couplet I ll so offend,
to make offence a skill,/ Redeeming time when men think least I will (1.2.176 77). The conclusive
effect of the rhyming couplets establishes Hal s intent to exploit the tendency of humanity to
appreciate a change or reformation by behaving poorly

Improvements on the Evaluation Scope of Evaluation I would continue to use a mixed method
approach in the evaluation of the summer programs. However, I would first address the survey and
interview questions, and how the observation process occurred. Before doing anything else I would
attempt to make sure that these questions being evaluated were being asked in a manner suited to the
age appropriateness of the participants. This may entail that several different versions of the surveys to
exist. I would also ensure that the number of questions each survey contained was limited in hopes to
increase accuracy and completion due to the limited amount of time needed for completion. In the
questions asked, I would make sure to ask how the summer program impacted the participants.
Additionally, I would also survey the parents of the participants to get a take on what their perceptions
of the summer program were. Criterion Following revamping the scope of the evaluation a criterion in
which the data will be compared would be established. The established criterion would be presented in
the evaluation in length. The current evaluation seems to arbitrarily make a judgment of the worth of
the program, and there were no references to the criterion process used.

Lady Macbeth Analysis
Some actresses see Lady Macbeth as sympathetic to her husband like Sarah Siddons and Kate
Fleetwood, feeling sympathy for Macbeth is a decision both actresses made for Lady Macbeth to be
relatable and more human, Siddons who portrayed her in the mid 1800s said that she approached her
as, keen to present the character in as attractive a light as possible, so sexually appealing fair feminine,
nay perhaps even fragile (Sarah Siddons qtd. In Robert Miola, 94). Siddons saw the character of
Macbeth as honorable and to have him as a husband only proves Lady Macbeth is very taken with
him, having put all of her efforts into seducing such an honorable man. Kate Fleetwood s own
interpretation of Lady Macbeth was very domestic, the societal hostess. In an interview in 2011,
Fleetwood who was directed by her husband Rupert Goold in the 2007 version of the play said that,
When Rupert suggested to me about the domestic side of her, that started to ring really big bells for
me (Fleetwood qtd. In Miola, 135). The argument about how Lady Macbeth truly loves her husband
and tried to summons the spirits is because she knows that Macbeth is very ambitious, and she needs
all the strength she can have to convince him to act out the three witches prophecy. This arguement
and its solution is very valid, Lady Macbeth only acting out for the benefit of her husband, she wants
her husband to be the king of Scotland but it does not mean she wants to queen herself. In an
interview, Fleetwood also

there is way to increase your environmental health and those around you.

from chemical reactions between toxins in the atmosphere. The accompanying are the principal
pollutants from motor vehicles. These particles of soot and metals give smog its dark color.

According to National Geographic monarch butterflies travel up to 3,000 miles each fall to their
wintering site in central Mexico. In 2004, an estimated 550 million completed the winter migration,
while in 2003 only 33 million arrived. Further, between 2012 and 2013, there was a 43.7 percent
decrease in the area occupied by the butterflies in the winter sanctuaries, the decline has numerous
reasons: climate change, deforestation, and habitat loss, agricultural use of pesticides and herbicides

The Butterfly Life Cycle
According to National Geographic the four generations of these butterflies are constituted by 4
separate butterflies that complete the 4 unique phases in just one year. After this, they restart the same
cycle, commencing with the primary stage of the first generation.
Stage 1
February and March: Locate a mate and search for an ideal place to lay their eggs
Stage 2
March April: They lay their eggs on the leaves of milkweed plants. The larvae eat, grow and
metamorphose into chrysalis.
Stage 3
May June: The third generation butterflies live out a life cycle like the first generation. They then
perish about fifteen days after metamorphosing into spectacular adult butterflies.
Stage 4
This generation repeats the processes the other generations of Monarch butterflies underwent, but with
the one crucial difference of traveling to California through Mexico to enjoy the warmer climate there.
They live for six to eight months until they again get ready to undertake the return.
The Migration
How these butterflies take a particular direction for migration is an unsolved mystery of our
generation. They fly at speeds ranging between 12 to 25 miles an hour. Similar to the migrating birds,
the monarch butterflies use the clear advantage of updrafts of warm air, called thermals and glide as
they migrate, to preserve the energy required for flapping their

The definition of sport is an athletic activity that involves physical action and usually with
competition. The movie Remember the Titans is an inspirational story of racial struggle and obstacles
for a high school football team and town. A stunning and remarkable plot that demonstrated how
prejudice and racism can be overcome for the good of people. Football is America s popular sport. It is
a favorite sport to watch on TV and people love football because of its strategic concept of offense and
defense plays for success. Football combines running, kicking and passing all in one game and the
team with the best skills usually wins. The movie, Remember the Titans take place in 1971 at a
desegregated T.C. Williams High School in a racist city, Alexandria, Virginia. The beginning of the
movie sets the tone of the storyline of how negative relationships between different race and ethnic
groups were acceptable. The school is forced into integration with a black school, therefore hires a
black football coach named Herman Boone. The town parents and players are outraged that a black
man was going to be their new head coach. The previous coach, Bill Yoast had a winning season and
was nominated for the Virginia High School Hall of Fame. Coach Yoast gained the support and love in
the community. The white football players were also upset having a black coach and threatened to quit
the team if Coach Yoast was replaced while the blacks were very happy. This is the first time the

A Compare And Contrast Fats Research Paper
Compare and Contrast Fats Generally, the word shortening means any group of solid fats. Shortenings
generally consist of nearly 100 percent fat. It may be made from vegetable oils, animal fats, or both.
Shortenings are used for may purposes, so manufacturers have formulated various kinds of fats with
various properties. (Gisslen, 2013)
All Purpose Shortening
Also known as regular shortening, have a tough, waxy texture, and small particles of the fat tend to
hold their shape in a dough or batter. They are called plastic shortenings, which means they are
moldable at room temperature. They have a good creaming ability. Which means that a good quantity
of air can be mixed into them to give a batter lightness and leavening power. This type of shortening
melts only at a high temperature. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They are also used in many other pastries, breads, and products mixed by creaming, such as certain
pound cakes, cookies, and quick breads.
High Ratio Shortening
These are soft shortenings that spread easily throughout a batter and quickly coat the particles of sugar
and flour. The are call high ratio because they were devised for use in cake batter that contain a high
ratio of sugar and liquid to flour. They also contain added emulsifying agents, so they can hold a larger
quantity of liquid and sugar than regular shortenings. Which gives a smoother and finer texture to cake
and make them moister. Commonly referred to as emulsifying shortening.
High ratio shortening does not cream well. When a recipe calls for creaming shortening and sugar,
regular shortening should be used. High ratio shortening is often used in icings because it can hold
more sugar and liquid without curdling. It is more temperature stable and will hold air better upon
whipping, improving volume and stability.

Media Convergence with Regard to Technology and Its...
What is meant by the term media convergence with regard to technology, and how has it affected
everyday life?
When America went through a period of media convergence with regard to technology, we were
essentially combining different types of mass media into one cohesive entity. Forty years ago, the
main forms of mass media used were the TV, radio, and newspapers. Now we have multiple forms of
media, the Internet is broadcasting radio programming, newspaper articles can be found on the
Internet, and commercials that give no other information besides the address of a website. With the
improvements of an average cell phone, we have been given the gift of the smartphone. With one
smartphone in hand, we are able to read newspaper articles, watch live streaming TV or movies, take
pictures or movies, and listen to broadcasted radio. Smartphones can essentially remove the need for
the paper newspaper, the television set, the radio, or the personal computer from our lives. My
smartphone is used hundreds of times a day, instead of looking for a recipe in my cookbook sitting on
the counter; I pull my smartphone out and perform a quick Google search for the recipe. When I need
to see, when the next wrestling tournament for the high school is instead of looking at my wall
calendar I pull out my smartphone, and check the high school website. My smartphone is programmed
to receive weather alerts for my county and surround areas. I also have text alerts sent to my

The Church Of The Holy Cross Lutheran Church
On Saturday 7, 2015, Alex, Michael and I drove to the Holy Cross Lutheran Church located in 11515
Ashcake Road Ashland, Virginia (about a 5 minute drive away from campus). The first thing that
caught my attention was the external structure of the church. The architecture of the church is old
school and it looks like a wooden house. Inside the church we could immediately tell that there were
at least two floors. The top floor was where the altar was located and where the congregation took
place. As soon as we stepped into the top floor, a really nice lady approached us and told us to sign a
book of guests that everyone that attends the service had to sign. After we signed in, the pastor
approached us and we told him that we were attending the service for a research project and that we
were students from Randolph Macon College, he seemed thrilled to be able to help us. The service
itself was much laid back and relatively small. There were 25 people at the church on that Saturday,
and they were all very friendly. The pastor was very enthusiastic and welcoming to us. At the
beginning of the service, he introduced us to everyone in the church and he encouraged us to research
as much as we wanted to. In my opinion, this service was very similar to a catholic worship, or similar
to the service that I used to attend when I lived in Venezuela. There was a lot of sitting, reading,
standing, and singing. As we learned in class and in Williams s Religion in America, music is a very

Shinkolobwe Uranium Mine
Uranium opened up with an historical account of a uranium mine in the African Congo named
Shinkolobwe. He quite visually discussed his trip to the Congo and the mine itself. To add background
information, the author recounted the history of the Congo, from its early days under the imperial
power of King Leopold to its present status of disarray and corruption. In the late 19th century, Congo
became the heart of the rubber sap industry, and its poor residents were forced into slavery. Quotas of
rubber sap were established, and workers who failed to meet those goals had their limbs severed.
When King Leopold passed, the Dutch government took power. Under this regime change, Congo
now started to enter the mining industry. Congo was actually very rich in those resources, and mines
started popping up throughout the country. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, a side project, later coined uranium, was often tossed aside as junk. The book will go on to
discuss its rise to fame and value, but it did state there that the uranium from the Shinkolobwe mine
would supply 2/3 of the United States nuclear bombs over the next few decades. That uranium
powered the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Following another regime change,
the Shinkolobwe pit was filled in with concrete to avoid falling into the wrong hands. Although fenced

Analysis Of The Poem The Usns Bob Hope
The USNS Bob Hope is a US Navy cargo ship named after the famous entertainer Bob Hope. It may
seem odd for a naval vessel to be named after an entertainer, but what Hope did for the Navy and the
military as a whole is worth the honor. Bob hope performed at hundreds of USO shows spanning 50
years. He dedicated much of his life to supporting US military efforts in the wars the country
participated in between the years of 1941 1991. Although Bob Hope may not have been a great
military leader like many other ships namesakes, but what Hope did shows great leadership in other
less expected ways. Leslie Townes Hope was born on May 29, 1903 in Eltham, London. His family
emigrated from England to the United States in 1908. Hope dropped out of school at age 16, and he
tried a few different career options before he eventually landed on entertainer. He started out taking
dance lessons and then working in small vaudeville shows. He started to gain some success with his
partner act before he discovered that he had a talent as a master of ceremonies (MC). He then split
from his partner in order to pursue this, and he was more successful as an MC. As Leslie Hope
continued to gain popularity, he decided that a name like Bob had a better sound to it; from then on he
was known to all as Bob Hope. In the early 40 s before the US was at war, Bob Hope performed for a
radio show, and In May 1941, the producer of the show convinced Hope to record the show at a live

This current problem correlates with other issues within the emergency department. A study was
performed by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) demonstrating the six components of the evaluations of
the quality of one s care; Safety, effectiveness, patient centered care, efficiency, time, and equitability
(Strang, Crotts, Johnson, Hartling, Guttman, 2015). The scope of my project involves training,
education and changing the way our department interacts with arriving patients and the triaging
process. The lack of specific tasks and communication in the triage area also lives. A dearth in
communication has been directly linked to delays in patient care, medication errors, and lack of
accountability (Sayah, Rogers, Devarajan, Kingsley Rocker, Lobon, 2014). With the use of
appropriate quick triage, communication, and transfer of patients one can implement targeted goals in
triage (Craig et at., 2016). The organization I selected to support my clinical project is The World
Health Organization (WHO). The WHO is one of the most effective organizations for advocating and
building healthier lives around the world. Their primary goal is to promote health with the use of
evidence based research and resources (WHO, 2017). The WHO has developed the emergency triage

  • 2. Comparing Anthem, The Fountainhead And Atlas Shrugged The Triumphant Characters of Anthem, The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged In reading the fiction works of Ayn Rand, one becomes quickly aware of her use of characterization to display a set of mores that apply to a group in today s society she is describing. In Anthem, for instance, even the names hold significance toward the point of the story. The name Liberty 5 3000, a gross smear of the philosophy of her world, becomes The Golden One, and then Gaea in the eyes of the protagonist. This use of a name, a face, to convey the message of a group becomes a common thread through all four of Miss Rand s novels. The Fountainhead is no exception. Though the names don t have quite the amount of significance, the characters presented are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Why are you saying this to me? That s not what you want to say. That s not what you did. That s why I m saying it! Because that s what I did! Though Miss Rand s true thoughts about these two characters are known only to her, it comes across to the reader that Henry had everything except that total honesty to oneself that is required of an artist of skill. He tried to save Roark from what he saw as a certain fate: his own. To an observant reader, Peter Keating and Ellsworth Toohey have the most interesting interplay in the book. A fine example of this can be found on page 60 where Peter says to Katie: You see, Katie, you don t know me. I m the kind that uses people. I don t want to use you. This is a sad commentary on the political system if there ever was one. The question who is using who constantly comes to mind when lines of this sort between characters of this sort show up in Miss Rand s pages. Peter spends the part of his life covered by this story as a tool of the likes of Toohey, and he still has the audacity to think that he is in power. At this point in the book, however, little does the reader realize Toohey s power with people. The scene where Peter tells Toohey that he sold Dominique shows a very clear picture of a broken man facing Toohey, his breaker : You re the only friend I ve got. I ... I m not even friendly with myself, but you are. With me, I mean, aren t you, Ellsworth? But of course. Which ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Advancing the Individual s Knowledge of the Holocaust Essay By comparing, analyzing and questioning the validity of Maus I and II, Night, Night and Fog, nonfictional historical accounts and a poem, called Already Embraced by the Arm of Heavenly Solace, found in Europe in the Contemporary World, Schindler s List and the Return to Auschwitz we may determine to what degree these sources serve to advance humanity s understanding of the holocaust. The holocaust can be explained as the historical event in which the Nazi s, who came to power in Germany in January 1933, and its collaborators murdered and persecuted approximately six million Jews. This came about because of the German belief that they were racially superior and the Jews were an alien threat to the German state. For humanity to advance in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The conclusions of the various sources, brought on by the analysis of the issues above and by comparing these sources to each other, determined that overall these sources have a high degree in serving to further man s understanding of the holocaust. By categorizing the two movies, Night and Fog and Schindler s List, together we are able to better analyze and contrast the two similar yet different sources. First off, both these sources can be deemed accountable because they use more than one source. The documentary, Night and Fog, uses two different survivors of the holocaust as well as various other sources. Schindler s List also relied on more than one person s account of the situation to write the movie s script. This is unlike the sources such as Return to Auschwitz, written by the first hand account of Kitty Hart , and Night, written by Elie Wiesel who also had first hand experiences , that depend on one person s account or report of the situation to tell the story. However, the written work isn t used for entertainment purposes, like Schindler s List is, and therefore is less likely to be changed to draw attention or gain financially. Schindler s List is a famous movie used to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Internal Combustion Engine 1 Introduction Since the advent of the internal combustion engine nearly two centuries ago, humans have become increasingly reliant on fuel to power these engines. Our only method, historically, for obtaining this fuel is to probe the earth and oceans until crude oil is struck. Crude oil is termed a fossil fuel as it takes hundreds of millions of years to form. Crude oil is extracted from a geological reservoir and subsequently refined into the various fuels which we use at ever increasing rates (petroleum, diesel, aviation fuel etc). Unfortunately we are not finding new oil deposits at anything like the rates we are consuming, so logically we will eventually run out. Many of the alternate energy sources currently available (electric engines, fuel cells and ethanol) have low energy density and do not scale well to larger vehicles like aeroplanes and trucks. Therefore finding new renewable sources of energy to power our current and future devices is paramount to our continuation as a successful species. This project focuses on the prokaryotic enzyme, diacylglycerol acyltransferase 1 DGAT1 (not to be confused with eukaryotic DGA1P a protein which provides the same function but is very different in sequence and structure). This enzyme is encoded by the atf1 gene in Rhodococcus opacus PD630. DGAT is important because it catalyses the final, rate limiting step, in the Kennedy pathway. This step is the transfer of an acyl group from acyl CoA to diacylglycerol, creating ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Crisis Crisis Crisis! Anytime we, as a society, hear this word our ears perk up and the speaker has our attention. Usually when we hear crisis we think that it is something with the distinct possibility of a highly undesirable outcome (Merriam Webster) that calls for immediate response. President George W. Bush says that we are in a national energy crisis (Is Yucca Mountain in Nevada a safe disposal site?). Bush has proposed a solution, storing all of our nation s nuclear waste in Nevada s Yucca Mountain, but has been met with much resistance from Nevada residents and politicians and environmental groups. The proposal is that Yucca Mountain will be a permanent disposal facility for two types of nuclear energy. Spent energy is from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lisa Gue, a policy analyst with Public Citizen says, Yucca Mountain is an unsuitable site for an unsuitable project. Many of the environmentalists oppose Yucca Mountain because they believe that the waste could contaminate our water supply. They believe that water could corrode the canisters and then the United States would be confronting a catastrophe. However, a study, conducted by the DOE, found that even if water would erode the canisters of waste, the waste would still have to pass through one thousand feet of rock to contaminate an underground water supply. Obviously, this fifteen year study, completed in 1998, greatly encouraged progression towards completion of Yucca Mountain. Despite these findings, skeptics still believe that water could be contaminated and claim that because the study was conducted by the DOE which is pro Yucca Mountain that it should be disregarded as biased. The largest problem confronting Yucca Mountain is transporting the radioactive waste from temporary storage sites. The waste would be transported by truck and train. Inevitably, accidents would occur during this process. The DOE says that special shipping casks should prevent any major impacts from any accidents. Critics, who have dubbed the Yucca Mountain plan Mobile Chernobyl, say that the combination of diesel fuel fires and radioactive waste could seriously pollute our nation s ... • 6. The Importance Of Racial Prejudice And Impitincy RACIAL PREJUDICE AND COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT Throughout the past century, American society has made massive steps in endorsing (declare one s public approval) equality and diminishing prejudice among different racial and ethnic minority groups. However, the Americans experience with prejudice is quite different from those of ethnic communities (Salvatore Shelton 2007). Therefore, according to this paper, there are two main independent variables identified that shapes an individuals managing ability, which then determines his cognitive disruption following an encounter illustrated by prejudice. Moreover, it suggests that there is group level variation with members of the privileged and disadvantaged groups in their experiences with prejudice. Whites do not think of themselves as possible targets of prejudice. They are however less mindful of stigma than the blacks. Whites are therefore relatively insensitive to slight cues of prejudice regardless of the targeted race. Therefore, there is a calculation that whites would not experience cognitive disruption after they are exposed to vague prejudice. It is rather expected that whites, in contrast to blacks, would undergo through substantial disruption when exposed to blatant prejudice. This is mainly because explicit racism is reasonably uncommon and the whites are not inclined into developing the coping skills that would shield them from cognitive disruption in such situations (Salvatore Shelton 2007). • 7. Somali Pirates Research Paper There are many pirates in the Somalian waters. Somalia is a place in East Africa. The Somali pirates are a criminal enterprise that is getting in millions of dollars in ransom payments. They have been hijacking ships since the year 2005. Port officials in Somalia are accepting bribes from the pirates to enter the Somali waters (Scott Baldauf 1). These Somali Pirates resorted to piracy because of an economic devastation that happened in Somalia in the 90s. The pirates are Somalians who are raiding ships that come nearby Somalia. They carefully select a ship to raid. They will want to raid cargo ships. After they find a ship to raid, they then use force to get into the ship. The pirates carry various guns to help to get on board the ship. After they manage to get on the ship, they start to take all the valuables on the ship (Hamza Mohamed 1). They then take the workers of the ship as hostage to gain more money for their safe return. In the movie, Captain Phillips, the pirates that are in the movie are Somalians pirates (Telegraph 1). ... In addition, the United States started sending troops into Somalia. In 1994, there was too much casualties in Somalia, so the U.S. soldiers withdrew from Somalia with the problems still unsolved (Phil Stewart 1). • 8. The Identity Of A New Zealand Essay Maori identity in New Zealand has been aspersed negatively by mainstream media (Nairn et al., 2012., p. 39) and has created a despicable and contempt perception of their ethnicity. This will be my main focus, by referring to the ideas of Arjun Appadurai s media and ideoscapes as a way of Maori being portrayed as menances to society because of the focus on the assumption that Maori are taking advantage of the system or are criminals, as can be seen in The New Zealand Herald, Police Ten 7 (a popular New Zealand program) and some of the latest statistics from the Department of Corrections and Quick Stats. I will attempt to justify my point of how Maori can be considered a diasporic community in New Zealand, based on the ideas of Clifford (1994) and Safran (1991) who explore the world of the forever changing definition of diaspora. My argument: That the ideas of Arjun Appadurai s media and ideoscapes best explain how the identity of diasporic Maori has been created in New Zealand. What can we call identity? Identity has been linked to self or many selves to serve the society one is in (James, 1980, p. 294), but one theory I quite liked, was the idea that self and society help to shape one another by societal influence on one self and the outcomes of society by ones actions in response to the influence (Ashmore, Lee, 1997, p. 191). It was a nice morning, about 50 degrees and sunny with a slight breeze. I hopped into my Chevy truck to head to the restaurant. There were cars zipping around the town because church had just gotten let out, and families were going to get food somewhere. Through my personal experiences, I know that Freddie s is a popular place to go on a Sunday. The owner s daughter, Stephanie Cannon, is my middle brother s girlfriend (also my broker), and she worked at the restaurant on its busiest days. She explained to me that many families enjoy gathering at Freddie s for a traditional breakfast after their church service is finished. She also noted that Freddie s offers some of the best food for a great price. On certain Sundays, there is a breakfast buffet that is extremely popular, and there s a wide variety of food offered at those buffets. I also know the owners, Mark and Sue Cannon, very well because they are obviously Stephanie s parents. Our families have been very close ever since I was a little kid, and we ve eaten at Freddie s many times. During the summer when my brother and Steph are home, we eat there occasionally. It s nice because we don t even have to pay. I had to pick up my brother, Derek, and Steph from her house because they wanted to go to breakfast while I observed. • 11. Roman Culture Depicted In Ridley Scott s Gladiator In Ridley Scott s movie Gladiator, much of the storyline is based on facts about what life was like in the Roman Empire. After the death of the much beloved emperor Marcus Aurelius, the reign of the five good emperors came to an end. Emperors were a major part of Rome s history, civilization, and rules. Although every factual story that Hollywood gets ahold of usually gets fantasized in one way or another, this one gave a decently accurate depiction of Marcus Aurelius, gladiatorial training and shows, Roman military, as well as depicting the battles that the Roman army fought. The most famous and largest amphitheater was the Colosseum, which could hold up to 50,000 audience members. This public slaughter of human beings was seen as a form of entertainment and a way to get people s mind off of stressful things. These games were known to be extremely bloody and terribly gruesome. The movie represents a pretty good depiction of what a real gladiatorial show would look like. The Colosseum was used for other entertainment purposes outside of gladiatorial shows such as mock naval battles depicting glorious victories in the name of Rome. To this day we do not have any insight on how the Roman s could have flooded the Colosseum and kept all of the water inside of it to host these events. In gladiatorial shows, the gladiators that fought were criminals or slaves that were trained in combat at special gladiatorial schools. There are only a few scenes in the movie that show the gladiators training, but they show the teamwork that was used in some games in order for the gladiators to live. Most of the time, gladiators were used as sitting ducks. They were set up against huge, burly men who could kill someone with their bare hands. These games were held from dawn to dusk and also sometimes featured wild animals that had the capability to tear gladiators to bits and pieces. Not only did animals face humans, but they were also paired up to fight other wild animals until there was only one left standing. The animals that were most commonly used in the games were buffaloes, bears, bulls, tigers, and lions. Also, they did not always give gladiators weapons to defend themselves with; quite often they sent them out to fight with absolutely nothing. The most significant aspect of this research considers the difference between nature and nurture. Sociologists, psychologists, scientists, and other professionals have tried to pin down the exact distinctions between these two types of upbringings. In literature, the same questions have been asked and studied using fictional characters, most famously in John Milton s Paradise Lost, in 1667, and Mary Shelley s Frankenstein, in 1818. The complexity of the characters in these texts creates the theme of nature versus nurture before they diverge and arrive at differing conclusions. Due to his mistakes in creating his character of God, Shelley personified Victor Frankenstein as a cold creator to provide a commentary on the harshness of Milton s God. Some have called Milton s God evil and unloving such as Richard Bentley (Read). This criticism can be attributed to the fact that Milton was cautious about creating a so called round character of God; this caution caused this flat creator that has no real stake in creation. When the first words that God speaks in Paradise Lost mock the fallen angels: Only begotten Son, seest thou what rage/ Transports our adversary (Milton III . 80 ) it only confirms the fate that this character cannot be the hero of the story. By doing this Milton created this malicious creator which inspired the cruelty that can clearly be seen in Victor Frankenstein in terms of both his family and his creation. The use of cruelty in creators, whether intentional or not determines the environment in which their creation lives. Shelley draws inspiration from Milton s Paradise Lost not only for the vicious creator in the stories but also the creations. The removal of these search results, or links, upon the request of an individual is referred to as delisting (Floridi et al., 2015). Google must also consider if the individual requesting to delist experiences harm from [public] accessibility to the information (Floridi et al., 2015, p. 6). Next, the policy addresses the way in which Google must assess each delisting request according to four key pieces of criteria: the data subject s role in public life, the nature of the information, the source, and time (Floridi et al., 2015). When evaluating the data subject s role in public life, Google considers three different types of citizens: individuals with a public personality (e.g. politicians), individuals with no public personality (i.e. average citizens), and those with a defined role in public life (e.g. school directors). • 21. Emily Dickinson And Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening Poems are like snowflakes. While no two are the same, they all have common structures and themes. One prevalent theme in poetry is that of death, which is present in both Because I Could Not Stop for Death by Emily Dickinson and Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost. Dickinson perceives death as a gentleman, while Frost perceives death as loneliness, which provides insight on how the time periods of the poems, the genders of the authors, and the authors personal experiences influence literature. A major factor of Emily Dickinson s style of poetry is the time period in which she lived. Emily Dickinson was alive from 1830 to 1886 (Mackowiak and Batten, 1159), during which the Second Great Awakening, Romanticism, and the United States Civil War took place. When Dickinson was a teenager, the Second Great Awakening took hold, encouraging people to take hold of their religion and practice once more. Thomas Ford discusses this in his book Heaven Beguiles the Tired: Death in the Poetry of Emily Dickinson, reviewed by Jack Capps. Capps points out that Ford repeatedly asserts that poetry, for Emily Dickinson, was but a substitute for the religious conversion that would have allayed her fears of death and obviated her poetic utterance (227). Dickinson did not blindly accept what religion told her to believe about death. Christianity depicts the idea of dying in a peaceful way, then spending the rest of eternity in a mystical place. Siddons saw the character of Macbeth as honorable and to have him as a husband only proves Lady Macbeth is very taken with him, having put all of her efforts into seducing such an honorable man. (Gisslen, 2013) All Purpose Shortening Also known as regular shortening, have a tough, waxy texture, and small particles of the fat tend to hold their shape in a dough or batter. They are called plastic shortenings, which means they are moldable at room temperature. They have a good creaming ability. Which means that a good quantity of air can be mixed into them to give a batter lightness and leavening power. This type of shortening melts only at a high temperature. ... High Ratio Shortening These are soft shortenings that spread easily throughout a batter and quickly coat the particles of sugar and flour. The are call high ratio because they were devised for use in cake batter that contain a high ratio of sugar and liquid to flour. They also contain added emulsifying agents, so they can hold a larger quantity of liquid and sugar than regular shortenings. Which gives a smoother and finer texture to cake and make them moister. Commonly referred to as emulsifying shortening. High ratio shortening does not cream well. When a recipe calls for creaming shortening and sugar, regular shortening should be used. High ratio shortening is often used in icings because it can hold more sugar and liquid without curdling. It is more temperature stable and will hold air better upon whipping, improving volume and stability. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Media Convergence with Regard to Technology and Its... What is meant by the term media convergence with regard to technology, and how has it affected everyday life? When America went through a period of media convergence with regard to technology, we were essentially combining different types of mass media into one cohesive entity. Forty years ago, the main forms of mass media used were the TV, radio, and newspapers. Now we have multiple forms of media, the Internet is broadcasting radio programming, newspaper articles can be found on the Internet, and commercials that give no other information besides the address of a website. With the improvements of an average cell phone, we have been given the gift of the smartphone. With one smartphone in hand, we are able to read newspaper articles, watch live streaming TV or movies, take pictures or movies, and listen to broadcasted radio. Smartphones can essentially remove the need for the paper newspaper, the television set, the radio, or the personal computer from our lives. My smartphone is used hundreds of times a day, instead of looking for a recipe in my cookbook sitting on the counter; I pull my smartphone out and perform a quick Google search for the recipe. When I need to see, when the next wrestling tournament for the high school is instead of looking at my wall calendar I pull out my smartphone, and check the high school website. • 32. The Church Of The Holy Cross Lutheran Church On Saturday 7, 2015, Alex, Michael and I drove to the Holy Cross Lutheran Church located in 11515 Ashcake Road Ashland, Virginia (about a 5 minute drive away from campus). The first thing that caught my attention was the external structure of the church. The architecture of the church is old school and it looks like a wooden house. Inside the church we could immediately tell that there were at least two floors. The top floor was where the altar was located and where the congregation took place. As soon as we stepped into the top floor, a really nice lady approached us and told us to sign a book of guests that everyone that attends the service had to sign. After we signed in, the pastor approached us and we told him that we were attending the service for a research project and that we were students from Randolph Macon College, he seemed thrilled to be able to help us. The service itself was much laid back and relatively small. There were 25 people at the church on that Saturday, and they were all very friendly. The pastor was very enthusiastic and welcoming to us. At the beginning of the service, he introduced us to everyone in the church and he encouraged us to research as much as we wanted to. In my opinion, this service was very similar to a catholic worship, or similar to the service that I used to attend when I lived in Venezuela. There was a lot of sitting, reading, standing, and singing. As we learned in class and in Williams s Religion in America, music is a very ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 34. Shinkolobwe Uranium Mine Uranium opened up with an historical account of a uranium mine in the African Congo named Shinkolobwe. He quite visually discussed his trip to the Congo and the mine itself. To add background information, the author recounted the history of the Congo, from its early days under the imperial power of King Leopold to its present status of disarray and corruption. In the late 19th century, Congo became the heart of the rubber sap industry, and its poor residents were forced into slavery. Quotas of rubber sap were established, and workers who failed to meet those goals had their limbs severed. When King Leopold passed, the Dutch government took power. Under this regime change, Congo now started to enter the mining industry. Congo was actually very rich in those resources, and mines started popping up throughout the country. ... • 35. Analysis Of The Poem The Usns Bob Hope The USNS Bob Hope is a US Navy cargo ship named after the famous entertainer Bob Hope. It may seem odd for a naval vessel to be named after an entertainer, but what Hope did for the Navy and the military as a whole is worth the honor. Bob hope performed at hundreds of USO shows spanning 50 years. He dedicated much of his life to supporting US military efforts in the wars the country participated in between the years of 1941 1991. Although Bob Hope may not have been a great military leader like many other ships namesakes, but what Hope did shows great leadership in other less expected ways. Leslie Townes Hope was born on May 29, 1903 in Eltham, London. His family emigrated from England to the United States in 1908. Hope dropped out of school at age 16, and he tried a few different career options before he eventually landed on entertainer. He started out taking dance lessons and then working in small vaudeville shows. He started to gain some success with his partner act before he discovered that he had a talent as a master of ceremonies (MC). He then split from his partner in order to pursue this, and he was more successful as an MC. As Leslie Hope continued to gain popularity, he decided that a name like Bob had a better sound to it; from then on he was known to all as Bob Hope. In the early 40 s before the US was at war, Bob Hope performed for a radio show, and In May 1941, the producer of the show convinced Hope to record the show at a live performance in ... Evidence based research show that inefficiencies and delay of patient care may result in undesirable patient satisfaction and poor patient outcomes. Through a comprehensive and collaborative process, I will implement operational changes of two triage systems; quick triage and Twiage. The implementations of both of these systems will allow the department to accommodate the increased patient volume and improve the patient wait times, thus improving the quality of care and increasing patient satisfaction. This current problem correlates with other issues within the emergency department. A study was performed by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) demonstrating the six components of the evaluations of the quality of one s care; Safety, effectiveness, patient centered care, efficiency, time, and equitability (Strang, Crotts, Johnson, Hartling, Guttman, 2015). The scope of my project involves training, education and changing the way our department interacts with arriving patients and the triaging process. The lack of specific tasks and communication in the triage area also lives. A dearth in communication has been directly linked to delays in patient care, medication errors, and lack of accountability (Sayah, Rogers, Devarajan, Kingsley Rocker, Lobon, 2014). With the use of appropriate quick triage, communication, and transfer of patients one can implement targeted goals in triage (Craig et at., 2016). The organization I selected to support my clinical project is The World Health Organization (WHO). The WHO is one of the most effective organizations for advocating and building healthier lives around the world. Their primary goal is to promote health with the use of evidence based research and resources (WHO, 2017). The WHO has developed the emergency triage assessment and treatment (ETAT). They teach emergent treatment skills of triaging ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
