Erruption In Pompeii
Introduction:
A significant event that occurred in Ancient Rome is the eruption of Mt Vesuvius which destroyed
the towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum, killing around 2000 people. The Mt Vesuvius eruption
was a Plinian eruption sending volcanic ash hurdling towards the sky sending out deadly gases
which was the main causes of the death of the people of Pompeii and Herculaneum. It left the
towns covered and hidden for many years until archaeologist discovered these sites. This was
significant because it opened a great deal of insight into how the Romans went about their day,
how they decorated their homes, what materials they used to decorate their homes, building
structures and much more information that proved to be very helpful in our understanding of how
Romans lived and how they went about their everyday lives. Now came the dust, though still
thinly. I look back: a dense cloud looms behind us, following us like a flood poured across the land.
Background of the Eruption: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The people of Pompeii were suddenly rocked by a Plinan Eruption from Mt. Vesuvius. The volcano
spewed plumes of ash up to 45 kilo metres into the stratosphere. This caused many problems for
the unsuspecting people in Pompeii. The plumes of ash were not the source of destruction for
the people of Pompeii but also lahars (mud flows) and pyroclastic flows. With the pyroclastic
flow made up of hot ash, pumice, rock fragments and deadly gases, moving across the ground it
was impossible for anyone to survive even if they hadn t already died from the pumice shooting
out of the volcano s mouth. Some of the cloud was white, in other parts there were dark patches of

Military Maps
In the Yale Center for British Art, one can find a beautiful map, titled: The Description of Jarsey
a(nn)o 1600. One noticeable trait that stands out with this map compared to others in the 16th and
early 17th centuries is the exquisite detail of topographical features. According to an exhibition of
the map, this is from the collection of George Legge, first Baron Dartmouth; previously in the
English Royal map collection (Yale Center, From the Collection). One might wonder why a map,
with the extensive detail that this has, would be in the hands of the Royal Collection and thus
commissioned by Queen Elizabeth. According to R. A. Skelton: it is not difficult to see how, in the
course of business, some maps might have come into the hands... Show more content on

On the map, one can see a tool indicating the scale of the map. This same looking tool can be
found in the book Compass and Rule in an exhibition called Bartholomew Newsam, set of
drawing instruments, c. 1570. This is the only known surviving Elizabethton drawing set in
modern day (Gerbino 61). This tool could have been used to scale the map, which can be seen in
the one square mile gridlines. In addition, by connecting these tools to those used likely by
military engineers, one can assume that the gridlines had a purpose besides denoting the scale
of the map. If only the scale was important, the British could have simply put a key on the map
showing 1 inch = 1 square mile, for example. Since they drew the entire grid, it could be
interpreted as being done to perhaps reproduce the map for military purposes. It may have been
easier to redraw the map to accurate scale by producing these gridlines. Thus, one could predict
that this map may have been reproduced in a smaller form for military personnel to effectively
defend this

Analysis Of The Article Power, Privilege, And Landscape...
The article, Power, Privilege, and Landscape in Minoan Art by Anne P. Chapin, seeks to examine
the previous interpretations of Minoan landscape frescoes, and add her own arguments towards the
debate of religious versus secular. She presents the conclusion that while Minoan landscape art did
have religious elements, the frescos presence was not an indication of a religious shrine. However,
she also introduces the idea that they helped to assert the dominance of an eliteclass, who sought to
demonstrate that they were influenced and connected with the divine. Chapin begins her article
with an examination of the problems of previous interpretations of the landscape frescoes that
have become so iconic and symbolic of Minoan art. The true meaning behind them has been
contested since their discovery by Arthur Evan s. Arthur Evans viewed them in a more secular
sense. Which, as the author pointed out on page 48, is most likely a result of being raised as an
elite Victorian. He was more inclined to view the great artworks as proof of the cultural superiority
(pg 48) of the Minoans, rather than demonstrations of a pagan religionhe had no part in.
However, Chapin does not find flaws just in Evans analysis, but as well with the more modern
interpretations, which place more importance on potential religious meanings. But as Chapin points
out on page 51, paraphrasing from Christos Doumas, what constitutes a religious shrine in Aegean
prehistory is unknown. So to claim a

EST sequences with vector sequence were edited using Phrap cross match application. Contig
Assembly Program 3 (Cap3) was used to assemble the sequences obtained from sequencing for
analysis while Consed/Autofinish software was used to control the sequence assembly. All
sequences were assembled separately into contigs. BLAST of sequences was conducted to
determine the gene homology in order to connect their functions. Unique sequences were
analysed for biological characteristics as well as functional annotation using program
BLAST2GO. New genes can then be identified eventually. Results Two cDNA libraries were
established from olive leaf and fruit, with 2304 clones and 1536 clones respectively. A total of
3840 EST sequences was generated from the two cDNA libraries. 106 low quality EST
sequences were removed by using Phred software. 3734 EST sequences with vector sequence
were edited using Phrap cross match application. EST sequences and 1506 high quality fruit
EST sequences were assembled using Contig Assembly Program 3 (Cap3) to assemble the
sequences separately into contigs. Consequently, homolog genes which were consensus EST
sequences in GenBank can then be obtained. 2228 leaf EST sequences were assembled into 205
contigs, length ranged from 514 bases to 1924 bases. 1506 fruit EST sequences were assembled
into 69 contigs, length ranged from 461 bases to 1909 bases. The two libraries were then

Managing Religious Conflict in Therapy
Running Head: MANAGING RELIGIOUS CONFLICT Managing Religious Conflict within
Psychotherapy Ryan Hagen UMASS Lowell Abstract This paper discusses the relationship of
religion and psychology within the setting of interpersonal dynamic psychotherapy. It raises the
question of whether and to what extent religionshould be included in a therapeutic setting. Varying
perspectives on this issue are reviewed, followed by an examination of the consequences of
addressing religion within therapy. Several examples are offered of potential pit falls a therapist
may encounter in this situation as well as suggestions for minimizing the likelihood of these
occurrences. Two models are included which provide frameworks for assessing the degree... Show

In 1989, Richards, in a study of 100 Mormon patients, found that they were more trusting of
therapists who disclosed a belief in god. A lot of this depends on the patient. Quackenbos (et al
1986) outlined four viewpoints or degrees of involvement a person may have with their religion,
and how it is used to interpret mental health. The four viewpoints are orthodox, moderate, neutralist
and atheistic. These lay on a continuum, where those with orthodox viewpoints believe mental
problems are caused by sin, and on the other end, atheistic sees mental problems as purely
psychological. Another framework was proposed by Batson and Ventis (1982). They argued that a
therapist s need to understand the different ways of being religious in order to understand the
impact that religion may or may not have on their patient. They created their framework around 3
dimensions, each of which has it s own continuum. The 3 dimensions are quest, ends and means.
The quest continuum measures the degree of importance the individual places on existential
questions, but does not necessarily feel an urgency to have answered. An example of this would be
an agnostic, or a philosopher who enjoys the process of examining these kinds of questions. A
person on the high end of this continuum would tend to have doubts about religion, and be
tentative about religious viewpoints. The means continuum

Abuse Of Power In Oleanna
Oleanna, a play by David Mamet, is a drama play that focuses on two characters; John, a
University Professor and Carol, one of his students that accuses him of sexual misconduct.
Throughout the three acts of Oleanna, the developmental changes in each character leads to a
gradual power shift from John to Carol. This can be seen through the John s preset authority as a
professor at the beginning, Carol s gradual acquisition of the power by adjusting her behavior to
John s, and John s inevitable downfall.
In Act 1, John s higher status over Carol as is established. He condescendingly listens to her and
interrupts her many questions with an expanded vocabulary which is barely understandable,
especially not to Carol, whose vocabulary is very simplistic. ... Show more content on

Right off the bat, the viewer notices that Carol s choice of clothing has changed. She is no longer
wearing a loose jumper and long skirt, but rather a more professional looking blazer. This
ensemble eerily resembles John s. As a University Professor, he chooses to wear a suit to project
an aura of authority and even leadership, which is what Carol is trying to establish for herself by
mimicking the way John dresses. In addition to that, Carol is no longer the soft spoken, timid
girl from Act 1, but rather it is she who is well spoken and articulate. She becomes more assertive
and interrupts her professor s various rants with remarks of scrutiny. Towards the beginning,
during one of his many rants, John uses the word paradigm to which Carol replies; I don t know
what a paradigm is. (Mamet 45) and when John tells her that it means model she replies, with a
great deal of hostility; Then why can t you use that word? (Mamet 45). In addition to that, John
realizes that he is loosing control over the situation a little bit, so he tries to wheel Carol back in to
being the naГЇve, soft spoken girl she was in Act 1. After reading her letter of complaint, John sits
down with her and puts on a show of great compassion saying Now, I see I have angered you. I
understand your anger at teachers. I was angry with mine. I felt hurt and humiliated by them. Which
is one of the reasons that I went into education.

Poem, Hanging Fire, By Audre Lorde And The Waiting Room By...
I read the poems, Hanging Fire by Audre Lorde and In the Waiting Room by Elizabeth Bishop.
Hanging Fire was written in 1997 and In the Waiting Room was written in 1979. After reading
each of them carefully, I noticed that the poems contained similarities as well as differences.
Hanging Fire features a fourteen year old girl who discusses her thoughts and concerns directly
with the audience. She talks about various things as she moves from one topic to another randomly.
For instance, the fourteen year old girl is concerned about her visual identity such as braces and
ashy knees. Suddenly, she is contemplating about serious concerns like death. In the first stanza, she
states that she is in love with an immature boy who still sucks his thumb in private, worried about
her skin condition as her skin has betrayed her, and worried about dying when she says, what if I
die/before morning (Line 8 9). In the second stanza, she goes on to tell us that she feels
inadequate from a social perspective. She says that she wants to learn to dance in order to fit in.
However, she also indicates that she doesn t want to learn. Those things along with too much/that
has to be done, imply that she is overwhelmed and she needs guidance (Line 20 21). However,
that much needed guidance isn t there as her mamma is in the bedroom/ with the door closed (Line
10 11). The third stanza starts off with Nobody even stops to think/about my side of it (Line 24 25).
Through those lines,

Iago And Iago In William Shakespeare s Othello
Humans do not recognize the devastating destruction that words are capable of having when in the
right hands. The play Othello, written by William Shakespeare, demonstrates the conceivable
power that dwells within words through the character Iago. The character, Iago, has a complete
understanding of his victims nature down to their essence. In addition, because he does not have
any core beliefs or morals, Iagogains the ability to ultimately change his faith and principals. In
short, the biggest factor that contributes to Iago s successful manipulation is his ability to carefully
select words in the language.
Iago understands his companions to the very core by having complete knowledge of their behavior
and beliefs. He is able to fully grasp what his victim is thinking in situations and takes full
advantage of it to profit him. Othello is an exquisite example of Iago s expertise in the English
language and shows how fatal it can become. In the following lines Othello and Iago are
conversating about the plausible relationships between Cassio and Desdemona:
Othello: O, yes, and went between us very oft.
Iago: Indeed?
Othello: Indeed? ... Is he not honest?
Iago: Honest, my lord?
Othello: Honest, ay, honest.
Iago: My lord, for aught I know.
Othello: What dost thou think?
Iago: Think, my lord?
Othello: Think, my lord?
(act III. sc iii. Ll 100 105)
This short interaction between Iago and Othello is the beginning of Iago implanting the poison of
doubt into Othello s mind. Othello never suspects the loyalty of Desdemona however, Iago destroys
the foundation of this trust by continuously influencing Othello to think about it. He is an expert
when it comes to the complexity of the human mind and it allows him complete insight into Othello
s psyche. In the quotation, Iago is seen constantly questioning Othello. Othello desires an answer
but instead encounters another question. Notice that Iago questions Cassio s devotion to Othello;
the moment Othello brings him up in their conversation: O, yes, and went between us very oft.
Indeed? . Iago is forcing Othello to re evaluate Cassio, thus implanting the seed of doubt into his
mind. Later, the seed is seen sprouting roots because Othello then questions Cassio as to

As a busy mother of two, working a full time job as a primary schoolteacher, Paula Cann had

It began with something as simple as peeing more than usual. Cann noticed that she started having
to go not only more often, but also with a new urgency. It got to the point that she could no longer
enjoy her evening walks around the local woods without desperately having to run to the bathroom.

Her decision to finally go to the doctor was what saved her life. Cann urges all women to pay
attention to their bodies and respect the fact that small changes could mean huge consequences. It s
better to be safe rather than sorry, so go to the doctor if you feel like there s something wrong and
you can t pinpoint why.
Cann was lucky to have caught cancer just in time
If Cann hadn t gotten the cyst removed at the time that she had, one more month of waiting could
have meant the difference between life and death. Thank goodness that she decided to see her
doctor and that her doctor was available to see her in a timely manner! Cann was told that she
caught her disease just in the nick of time to give her a favorable prognosis.
Why is it so hard to catch ovarian cancer early?
The difficulty in catching ovarian cancer early lies in the elusive nature of the signs and symptoms.
The most common symptoms reported are increased fatigue, needing to pee more often, persistent
bloating, and stomachaches. Because ovarian cancer can become so large as to obstruct other
organs in the body, women can sometimes feel unusually full only after a small meal or snack.
This can cause some patients to lose their appetites as well. When working women and full time
mothers are bustling around the house or office, it can be easy to miss these changes in your body.
Late diagnosis of ovarian

How Social And Political Procedures Affects Resilience At...
This paper has demonstrated and examines how series of social and political procedure affects
resilience at various spatial scales. Resilience is defined as the ability of individuals or
communities to withstand and rebound from sudden natural disaster [earthquake, flood or
hurricane] that accounts for the loss of life and properties. However, the definition of resilience
is broad as resilience thinkers [Charles Holling and Neil Adger] have argued differently. For
example, Holling defines resilience as the ability of a system to absorb change of state variable,
driving variables, and parameters, and still persist (Holling, 1973), while Adger, defines resilience
as the ability of groups or communities to cope with external stresses and disturbances as a result
of social, political and environmental change (Adger, 2000). Understandably, thinker like Adger and
Holling as Climate Changethinkers within the academic space have a different opinion to what
constitutes the impact of climatechange and best possible approaches needed towards building
resilience within social and political frameworks.
This paper argues prevalently that, resilience is shaped by social and political discourse
emphasizing on vulnerability and climate change adaptation methods such as Livelihood and
Economic Diversification (LED) and Community based adaptation (CBA). The essay further argues
that resilience is debated at multi levels [local, state, and global] but global policy makers often

The Satirical Transformation Of Gulliver Essay
The Satirical Transformation of Gulliver
Swift s Gulliver s Travels is difficult to come to terms with for a multitude of reasons. The most
immediate problem is that of genre. How may Gulliver s Travels be categorized? It s a fiction; it s
written in prose; it s a children s tale; it s a comedy; it s a tragedy; however, to say this is to say
very little. Clearly it s satirical, but that is not to say it s a satire. Arther E. Case, for example, thinks
that it s not a satire: it would be more accurate and more illuminating to call it a politico
sociological treatise much of which is couched in the medium of satire (Four Essays on Gulliver
s Travels p. 105). In response to Case s classification, I offer a question: what s the purpose of
formal specification if there are numerous imprecise labels to which this work may conform?
Swift s masterpiece should be entitled to its own donnГ©e; thus, for the sake of this essay, I will
shy from all comprehensive forms of categorization. Instead, I ll consider Gulliver s Travels on its
own terms, sui generis, to interpret its unique presuppositions, many of which are expressed
satirically. By allowing Gulliver, an uncritical lover of man, to become a hypercritical hater of
man, Swift has it both ways: Gulliver functions as both the object and instrument of satire (Four
Essays on Gulliver s Travels 106).
Perhaps one could reduce Gulliver s voyage to the country of the Houyhnhnms by describing it as
a carefully devised fable; however, this

As compared with formal examinations, the ASQs have been shown to be both cost effective
and easily administered (Gollenberg, Lynch, Jackson, McGuinness, Msall, 2010). There are five
areas of development that are assessed on the ASQ, which are communication, gross motor, fine
motor, problem solving, and personal social. The questionnaire can be filled out by the parent or
caregiver in10 20 minutes and scored in 1 5 minutes, so it is very time efficient assessment tool
to use in the outpatient setting. The ASQ has been validated in many counties, in different

those with environmental risk factors (Schonhaut, Armijo, Schonstedt, Alvarez, Cordero, 2013).
For scoring, the child s scores in each of the areas are compared to the cutoff points listed on the

child is delayed in one or more areas. Scores beneath the cutoff points indicates a need for further
assessment, scores near the cutoff points call for discussion and monitoring, and scores above the
cutoff suggest the child is on track

The Collapse of Hih В– Solvency and Audit Risk
The Collapse of HIH В– Solvency and Audit Risk
Following the collapse of HIH, considerable debate, comment and speculation have arisen regarding
whether and at what point HIH became insolvent. When a company is close to insolvency, the risk
associated with auditing that company is considerably higher than for one that is solvent. This
report investigates methods of determining insolvency, the roles of directors and auditors, and the
level of audit risk associated with HIH prior to its collapse.
There is general agreement that the concept of solvency relates to having the capacity to meet debts
as they fall due. An insurance company is solvent if it is able to fulfil its obligations under all
contracts at any time (or at least under most ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cross guarantees exist where a subset of companies in the corporate group (the closed group )
guarantee the debts of each other. A regulatory approved Deed of Cross Guarantee has existed in
Australia since 1991. All subsidiaries party to a Deed of Cross Guarantee must make a solvency
statement.
HIH and its subsidiary, FAI insurance had cross guarantees in place. As a result of the cross
guarantee, HIH adopted a group enterprise perspective when attesting to its regulatory solvency
position. The company treated insurance subsidiaries as if they were part of a singular corporate
group and netted off related company assets and liabilities in several APRA annual returns . This
contributed to the fact that the auditors did not identify that some subsidiaries were potentially
insolvent.
The risk that a company is insolvent is a component of audit risk, which should be taken into
account by auditors. Audit risk is defined as the risk that that the auditor will give an inappropriate
audit opinion when the financial report is materially misstated . Auditors risk issuing an unqualified
audit opinion on financial statements that are materially misstated or omit material transactions;
therefore the procedures used in the audit must be planned according to the identified audit risk.
The components of audit risk are inherent risk, control risk and detection risk.
Inherent risk is the risk that the financial statements contain a material

Contracts For A Contract Agreement Essay
A contract is a promise or a set of promises that one party makes to another and that can be
enforced using law. Contracts are made for commercial bargains. A contract is legally binding. It
entails selling or hire of commodities such as services, goods or land. The major elements
required for a legally binding contract are offer and its acceptance . When one person expresses an
offer on outlined terms to contract and the offeree indicates that they have agreed to the set terms,
the contract becomes legally binding. There is usually no room for negotiations after a contract has
been made. Therefore, an offer that is valid must be in existence. There are requirements for
existence of such a valid offer. This essay assesses the requirements. For an offer to be valid,
contracting parties in a commercial transaction must be having an intention of entering into an
agreement that is legally binding. Therefore, both the offeror and the offeree must be ready to
create a relationship that is legal in manner . This ensures that either parties can sue the other in
case they do not adhere to provisions of the terms in the contract. If the parties are in a commercial
relationship that is not legally binding, then that is not a contract. It may be subject to contract
which means that the terms of the relationship will become legally binding once the parties sign the
subsequent contract. When the interaction is subject to contract, either of the parties is free to exit
the negotiations at

Children s Cognitive And Socio Emotional Development
Observation is a way for early childhood teachers to record a child s development or interests.
Using these allows for the information to be reflected on when producing lessons. Therefore, this
report will be focusing on the observations made on a child within an early childhood centre.
Focusing on analysing and discussing the observations made on the child s cognitive and socio
emotional development domains. Also, showing how both the cognitive and socio emotional
domains inter relate with a child s holistic development. 2. Background Information

Another example of cognitive development is joining other in observing and discussing about
butterflies. According to Gonzalez Mena (2010), teachers should ensure children s cognitive
development is given plenty of opportunities to be nurtured and extended through small
collaborative groups. After the discussions Sarah was still interested in the butterflies, and while in
the art area used her reflection skills to create a drawing depicting a butterfly emerging from its
chrysalis. Therefore, creativity is important in promoting cognitive development and should be
either planned or spontaneous (Gonzalez Mena Widmeyer Eyer, 2012). Thus, ensuring the learning
environment stimulate and encourages a child s curiosity, and allows for free exploration. In
Piaget s theory of cognitive development, it is emphasise that children learn through exploring
and creating their world. The theory viewed cognitive development as stages. Based on those
ideas in the theory a four year olds cognitive development is viewed as the preoperative stage,
where a child is able to use symbols or words to represent objects, places and events through
speech and are (Gonzalez Mena Widmeyer Eyer, 2012). Therefore, both observations three and
four have can be used as a reflection of Sarah s preoperative learning and thinking. For example, in

Dispositional Model Analysis
The Dispositional models show the primary cause of addiction takes place within the individual
themselves (Miller, 2011). With individuals, this disease model shows that the person doesn t
like taking responsible for them having a condition. This has to do with one s morals and self
control of themselves. By this the individual will place blame on others without taking
responsible of themselves. When it comes down to it, if we solely base this on someone having a
disease, then we cannot hold them accountable for causing people deaths like car accidents or
being charged with murder if they kill someone while they are under the influences of alcohol. The
Sociocultural model is based on the viewpoints of one s influence of the societal

Describe The Story Of Nabucco
Before Verdi wrote his opera, the story of Nabucco appeared on the Italian stage for the first time
in 1819. Nabucco was a play by Florentine dramatist Giovanni Battista Niccolini. In its published
edition, Niccolini`s play carried a complex key for the understanding the political allusion in the
work. The second story of Nabuccoagain appeared on the Italian stage, this time in the form of five
act ballet written by Antonio Cortesi and performed at La Scala in 1838. The work was written and
performed for the Coronation Season at La Scala. Commemorating the crowning of Austrian
Emperor Ferdinand as King of Lombardy and Venetia, an event that marked the high point of
Austrian domination in Italy. Temistocle Solera appears to have based his libretto to this scenario,
and it was with its scenery and costume that Marelli first staged Verdi`s opera.
The opera was based on a plot taken from the Old Testament of the Bible, Daniel 4:29 33, the
story of Zechariach and the Jews suppressed by Babylon s King Nebuchadnezzar whose name for
purposes of song is reduced to Nabucco and his resentful daughter, ... Show more content on

Viewed on a more complex level, the symbolism of Nabucco offers an intricate relationship between
the characters and political events. In this view, King Nabucodonosor might represent Napoleon,
and his two daughters, one legitimate, symbolizing Italy, and another illegitimate Austria. The
Babylonian religion and the high priest of Baal, ironically represent the Pope and the Catholic
Church. The parallels between the opera`s subject matter and Italy`s situation in 1840s are easy to
discern: the opera was about a chosen nation dreaming of freedom from foreign domination, the
Hebrews slaves represented the Italians struggling against their Austrian

And Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had gone to Shechem to make him king. So it
happened, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard it (he was still in Egypt, for he had fled from the
presence of King Solomon and had been dwelling in Egypt), that they sent and called him. Then
Jeroboam and the whole assembly of Israel came and spoke to Rehoboam, saying, Your father

Rehoboam ever consulted with the younger men he rejected the advice of the elders.
i. This is a common phenomenon today what some call advice shopping. The idea is that you
keep asking different people for advice until you find someone who will tell you what you want to
hear. This is an unwise and ungodly way to get counsel. It is better to have a few trusted
counselors you will listen to even when they tell you what you don t want to hear.
b. And consulted the young men who had grown up with him: These men were much more likely
to tell Rehoboam what he already thought. By turning to those likely to think just as he did, it
shows that Rehoboam only asked for advice for the sake of appearances
i. Their unwise advice shows the wisdom of seeking counsel from those outside our immediate
situation and context. Sometimes an outsider can see things more clearly than those who share our
same experiences.

How Political Parties Harm Democracy
Political parties exist in a democracy as a way for likeminded individuals to be united over a set
of shared beliefs. (Daniel) Political parties allow the members of the party to elect politicians to
government positions in order to advance their beliefs. (Hargrave) The political parties offer their
members strength in numbers, by uniting large numbers of individuals into a collective group;
they can select the best candidates to pursue their interests, as opposed to having thousands of
individuals running for office based on a very narrow spectrum of beliefs. (Daniel) While political
parties help organize the election process and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The ways in which people vote have led to a situation where there are two political parties that
dominate the elections. This leads to an inability of the voters to choose the candidates of their
likings.
The existence of political parties has led to a situation in the United States that is inconsistent with
the intentions of a representational style of government that the country was formed on. The
existence of these political parties has taken much of the power and ability to control the
government away from the citizens. (Hargrave) The United States government is set up in a way
that allows the people to elect individuals that they see best fit for serving their needs and desires.
This is evident in the House of Representatives. In the House of Representatives, each
representative is elected by the people of his district. The citizens of each district vote on the
candidate that will best serve their needs once in Washington D.C. (Davidson) Although the
representatives are elected based on their promises to their constituencies, they face a great
challenge once in office, and that is the political party to which they belong. While serving in the
House of Representatives, the individual congressmen that are elected by the citizens of their
districts are expected to comply with the beliefs of the political party that they belong to. By
having to vote on issues based on the

This article demonstrates that the CISG and Incoterms to some extent mutually supplement and

knowledge of similarity on the risk rules that is both connecting the passing of risk to the transfer
of physical possession, or at least being placed in the position of having control over the goods.
This article also expounded some differences regarding risk allocation. For instance, the Incoterm

The Symbolic Interactionalism Theory Of Hate Crime
Hate crimes are difficult to fathom, primarily because they involve the unprovoked physical
attacking and, sometimes, murder of people based on race and ethnicity. A more formal
definition of hate crimes is presented by Shepard (2017, p. 285). As he writes, a hate crime is a
criminal act that is motivated by extreme prejudice, This is a very good, concise and accurate
definition, nevertheless, hate crimes are not the outcome of unimaginable heights of discrimination.
Most people have prejudices and many have stereotypes regarding others, whether it be racial or
class stereotypes. Nobody is completely lacking in any form, shape or type of prejudice but, the
much greater percentage does not physically attack, beat or murder those whom they... Show more

Between 2006 to 2017, as reported by O Reilly, hate crimes targeting Muslims has increased by an
outstanding 91%. The average increase in all forms of hate crimes rose by 41% between 2016 2017
(Farivar, 2017). Hence, inarguable statistics and numbers establish a very high rate of increase in
hate crimes, most especially during 2016 2017, coinciding with the campaign and subsequent
election of Donald Trump. There are many theories of crime, with criminologists, psychologist and
sociologists, debating whether criminality is an an outcome of nature, as in genetically inherited, or
produced by nurture (Brinkerhoff, White and Ortega, 2011). Even though the debate is ongoing,
most criminologists, sociologists and psychologists agree that cases in which criminality is linked
to nature, are extremely rare. Instead, they emphasise, criminality as a product of nurture
(Brinkerhoff, White and Ortega, 2011). This means that people who commit heinous hate crimes
were presumably raised in an environment which expressed extreme prejudice towards a certain
racial, ethnic or religious group and truly believed that the world would be a better place without
them in it, or, at least, without them living in the United States (Brinkerhoff, White and Ortega,
2011). As indicated, hate crimes can be explained through the use of theory and, one such theory is
the symbolic interactionism theory. As criminologists were engaged in attempting to

In Valdivia, Chile 1960 an earthquake changed the lives of many. An earthquake is the violent
shaking of the ground that will destroy homes, buildings, landforms, historical monuments, and
lives. Earthquakes begin with the breakage of rock along a fault line. When two tectonic plates rub
against each other they create an earthquake. Earthquakes will ride along a fault line which will
determine how long the quake will go on. The larger and longer the fault like the bigger the
earthquake. Earthquakes send out waves, primary waves or, p waves and secondary waves or, s
waves travel along the interior of the earth. These two waves are called body waves. While
detecting the waves, the primary waves appear first then the secondary waves. Primary waves

Theme Of Fate In Oedipus The King
Oedipus the King: Fate or Free will Throughout Oedipus the King, the concept of fate and free
will plays an essential part in Oedipus destruction. This story describes the suffering of Oedipus
as a result of a misfortune of which he has no control over. Oedipus is a play that demonstrates
how a person s life can either be destined to take a certain path or be based on the decisions a
person makes throughout their life. There are no oracles or prophecies that can determine how an
individual s life turns out to be, but according to Sophoclesthe gods cursed Oedipuseven before he
was born. This is a tragic event of a conflict between the powerful gods, his blindness, a man s
inability to change his destinyand his intelligence. Oedipus does not deserve all the tragedies that
happened to him, and he is a victim of fate. The gods had already proclaimed Oedipus fate even
before he knew it. His fate has been bound since the day he was born and there is no way it can
be avoided. The herdsman says If you are the man he says you are, you re bred to misery . (1361
1362) This means that he was born to be miserable, no matter what kind of person he turns out to
be. Everyone already knew the outcome would turn out horrible as it is expected. E.R Dodds
says ...is that man has no free will but is a puppet in the hands of the gods who pull the strings that
make him dance. (35) This shows how the gods are controlling him and his future life. The gods
had cursed him which means he has been controlled since the beginning just like puppets. This
metaphor serves as a perfect example of what Oedipus goes through.
Some of his actions were unintentional, however some of them were ignorant and this is what s
stopping him from uncovering the truth. The day Oedipus meets Teiresias, he tells him that
Oedipus is the murderer of Laius. Oedipus cannot believe that Teiresias would say such things.
He was not convinced of the reality and accuses Teiresias of being a liar. Oedipus says Not twice
shall say calumnies like this and stay unpunished . (415 416) Oedipus is considered ignorant
because although he is given knowledge from the wiser character, he chooses to ignore the facts
and continue looking for the killer. Gould mentions

The Repeated Failure of the League of Nations in Keeping Peace
The League of Nations repeatedly failed in keeping the peace because, first of all Hitler went
against the Treaty of Versailles and started World War 2 yet the League of Nations failed to
react. The Treaty of Versailles also failed because Mussolini in Abyssinia went against the league
and Manchuria also contributed towards the failure to keep the peace. The structure of the league
didnГ‚ t help as the council only met once a year. The power of the league was very weak as there
was no military force. Finally the lack of strong nations joining the league contributed to the failure
of the League of Nations.

The League of Nations also failed because Mussolini, a dictator from Italy, prepared to invade
Abyssinia. Abyssinia then asked the League for help; while the League of Nations talked to
Mussolini he used the time to send an army into Africa. The League of Nations then suggested
giving Abyssinia to Italy. Mussolini ignored the League of Nations and invaded Abyssinia. In
secret however Britain and France agreed to give Abyssinia to Italy, the Hoare Laval Pact.
Manchuria became a factor or the failure of the League of Nations in 1932 when the Japanese
army invaded Manchuria and threw out the Chinese residents. They then set up their own
government called the Г‚ ManchoukuoГ‚ . When china asked the League of Nations for help it
sent a group of officials led by Lord Lytton to study the problem, this however took a year, but in
February 1933 they ordered Japan to leave Manchuria.
However Japan refused to leave Manchuria and instead left the League of Nations. As many
countries had important trading links with Japan the League of Nations couldnГ‚ t agree on
sanctions or even ban weapon sales. Britain and France didnГ‚ t want a war therefore nothing was
done. This showed the League of Nations as weak and powerless therefore adding to the failures
and breakdown of the League of Nations.

Self-Assessment
Humans have a fundamental tendency to seek positive information of themselves, namely engage
in self enhancing (Sedikides, 1993; Swann, Pelham, Krull, 1989). However, individuals are also
motivated to seek the subjective truth of themselves, namely engage in self verifying. (Sedikides,
1993; Swann et al., 1989). Simultaneously, individuals struggle and deject to seek objective and
accurate truth of themselves, namely engage in selfassessing (Sedikides, 1993). Self assessment can
occur through the process of self awareness, where individuals become conscious about their
behavior and thoughts and regulate according to their internal standards and values (Huggon, 2014).

President Woodrow Wilson s Speech
Throughout the semester Joseph Nye s signature concepts of hard and soft power have been
analyzed amongst the backdrop of U.S. foreign relations. Hard power is the use of coercion i.e.
military and economic means to influence the behavior of other political bodies (Hudson). This
contrasts to Soft power which is the use of attraction to produce desired foreign policy results [by
focusing] on three key resources: culture, political values, and foreign policies (Hudson). Through
the wielding and usage of the tools of soft power ideas about U.S. values and culture have been
able to attract partners and support to Washington without the use of force and/or threat of further
war and atrocity. Due to this fact it appears soft power is more integral to influencing foreign
relations, especially when considering the effects of actions such as President Woodrow Wilson s
establishment of a Committee on Public Information, President Franklin D. Roosevelts Four
FreedomsSpeech, and President Harry Truman s support for the Marshall Plan. The first key
resource of soft power, culture, can be addressed when speaking to the establishment of the
Committee on Public Information (CPI) by President Woodrow Wilson on April 13, 1917 in
order to usher support for U.S. participation in World War I. Headed by George Creel, the CPI
was a model of public mobilization tasked with presenting the absolute selflessness of America s
aims, through the use of mass media to call upon

Book Thief Summer Reading
The Book Thief Summer Reading Essay Over the summer of 2014 I read The Book Thief, a
novel by Markus Zusak. Prior to reading this book I honestly thought it was just going to be
another stereotypical WWII story that just revolves around a hidden Jew and the bland home
life of a nervous German family. I was proven wrong by the time I read the first chapter. The
Book Thief turned out to be so much more than I imagined it would be. The characters weren t
the typical stock characters I had predicted. They had their own personal struggles and lives
outside of hiding a Jew. Everything in the book had a story behind it, whether it be Max s
accordion or how Liesel came to live with a new family. There were almost no dull moments and I

From day one, Rudy was always determined to be Liesel s best friend. (Zusak 48) and that was
how it was with Georgie and I. Zusak says A snowball in the face is surely the perfect beginning
to a lasting friendship. (Zusak 48) My friendship with my neighbor also had a snowball to the
face start. Shortly after moving into his neighborhood, I was walking my dog Chloe but got
distracted and dropped the leash, and Chloe took off after a squirrel in Georgie s yard. I was too
busy trying to chase her down to watch where I was going and ended up running smack into
Georgie who was getting the newspaper from the end of his driveway. We began talking and
everything went from there. Both boys also did their share of eccentric acts, like Rudy s Jesse
Owens incident where he covered himself in charcoal and ran around the town s track, pretending
to be the famous olympic sprinter, Jesse Owens. Coming home one day and finding Georgie and
my little sister dressed as wizards pushing each other up and down the street in a wheelbarrow
certainly competes with the peculiar acts of Rudy Steiner.

Women s Roles in The Yellow Wallpaper and The Withered Arm
Women s Roles in The Yellow Wallpaper and The Withered Arm
In the late 19th century, women were expected to conform to the conventions of society. This meant
that they were expected to get married young, pure and beautiful. They were treated like objects as
if men bought them. How the woman felt was irrelevant in this period.
Women were expected to produce an heir and a spare . Women were also victim to double
standards. For example, women had to deal with a child out of wedlock yet were given no
responsibility for this.
This contrasts strongly to a woman s role in society today. However, women are still expected to
get married and give birth to a child.
I am going to explore this issue in two short stories; The Yellow... Show more content on

Hardy uses a technique called sympathetic background to show us this when he tells of how Rhoda
sat apart from the rest in the milking barn and lived on a lonely spot away from the other milkmaids.
In The Yellow Wallpaper, Gilman also shows sympathy for the plight of women. Like Hardy, she
also uses the sympathetic background technique when she illustrates the oppression of the
speaker by John and by society. This is illustrated clearly from the very beginning of the story
where the speaker says But what is one to do? This shows how she feels she is being trapped and
oppressed by society s expectations of her.
In The Withered Arm, I feel that Farmer Lodge genuinely believed that he was doing nothing
wrong be ignoring and looking down on Rhoda and her son because he felt society expected him
to do that, however other people may believe that it was unfair that a woman was left in that
position. In The Yellow Wallpaper, I feel that John acted caringly towards the speaker, whereas
others may feel that John was over protective. In both stories, the female characters were expected
to conform to societies expectations of them and if they did not, they were ostracised from society.
For example, in The Withered Arm, we learn that Rhoda has had a child out of wedlock with
Farmer Lodge (sympathetic background). For this
terrible sin, Rhoda is effectively excluded from society; however, no blame is

Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs Research Paper

American Tapestry
February 12, 2016
Most motorcycle groups consist of completely harmless people who just love to ride and have a
passion for the open road. The biker world does however have a violent subculture a highly
organized criminal network of Harley riding outlaws who fight turf wars over drugs, women, and
weapons. The FBI defines outlaw motorcycle gangs as this: organizations whose members use their
motorcycle clubs as conduits for criminal enterprises. Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs are highly
structured criminal organizations whose members engage in criminal activities such as violent crime
, weapons trafficking, and drug trafficking (FBI). According to the FBI, there are more than 300

The incident left three people dead. 80,000 motorcycle enthusiasts had been in Laughlin, a town
of 8,000 about 80 miles southeast of Las Vegas, for the 20th annual River Run. The 1,700 room
casino hotel was completely booked for the event, and a hotel representative blamed the
violence on outlaw motorcycle gang members. Although the Mongols are a smaller gang than
many of their peers with similar notoriety, they make up for their relatively small numbers with
tenacity. Since their 800 member ranks are clustered largely in and around Southern California,
the MC is a powerful force there. With the help of standing allegiances with Latino street gangs,
the Mongols took control of the southern california area from the Hells Angels in the 1980s and
still hold the turf today. The Mongols allegiance with these street gangs is largely based on race,
as the majority of the Mongols are Hispanic or Native American. The club was founded after a
number of Latino bikers were denied entry to the Hells Angels due to their race. The Mongols
remain a violent and active gang today; in 2008, sixty gang members were arrested on charges
including trafficking, racketeering, and murder. This resulted in the arrest of President Ruben Doc
Cavazos. As a result of this, the Mongols were banned from wearing their patches, or colors, in
public.

The Bolshevik Revolution of October 1917-Essay Review
In 1917, in the midst of the Great War, Russia faced one of the biggest political shifts that the
Tsarist ruled country had ever known the Bolshevik Revolution. There are two significant time
frames associated with the Bolshevik Revolution. In the February revolution Tsar Nicholas II
abdicated his throne and a Provisional Government took control. In the October revolutionthe
Bolsheviks took power by overthrowing the Provisional Government. How did the October
revolution become a reality? What factors facilitated the BolshevikRevolution of October 1917?

After the July event, Lvov s resignation, Kerensky took control as the new Prime Minister.
Richard Pipes gives a detailed account of the events that led up to the July event and the
Bolsheviks preparedness. The Bolsheviks were opportunists and used propaganda to influence and
agitate, gives credit to their political strategy. The Bolsheviks saw an opportunity and used it. They
also understood that their timing had to be flawless. They did not want to quell the frenzy they had
created among the mutineers; however, a premature large scale uprising would give the Provisional
Government an excuse to crush them. Although the July event was a setback for the Bolsheviks, it
did create a growing dissatisfaction among the soldiers. Many had no more will to fight, and lost
their faith in the government. This would prove crucial when Kerensky would, with failed
attempts, call on them to defend the Winter Palace against insurgents in the October Revolution.
An important factor that facilitated the Bolshevik Revolution was the Kornilov Affair. Pipes and
Fitzpatrick disagree in that Fitzpatrick refers to the Kornilov Affair as a coup based on national
interest. Pipes refers to the Kornilov Affair as a coup in response to deception. Fitzpatrick writes
the coup attempt by Kornilov was of his own design and without provocation. Pipes however,
establishes the Kornilov Affair was a result of Kerensky s misperceptions. Kerensky felt that as head

The Virtual Community And Its Effects On Everyday Social Life

Life is full of test and struggles making the best of in the easiest cost if what everyone seeks. The
virtual community makes things easier, efficient, and simple. Companionship is something
everyone wants and desires, there s nothing better than having someone with similar interest,
hobbies, and extracurricular activities instead of searching through many people and getting to
know them Rheingold implies that one can simply find a place of interest or favorite subjects and
communicate with those who have common interest . Most times finding someone to relate to is a
difficult process, well it was. Now the process for finding a friend is easier and less of an hasle.
Many sites along the virtual community help narrow the options down. Such as facebook,
Eharmony, and match.com. Although the sites can help find a best friend or lover maybe even
the spouse of one s dreams there are a few cons that come along with it. Predators looking for
young children, psychos who want to hurt people, and even false advertising from someone. Many
still seem to find and build relationships as well as companions. Various sites such as facebook

population. The time has come to change these statistics. It is the 21st century and we, as humans,
now have the technology and resources to reverse these terrible numbers. There are two arguments
on what we should do with this new technology, however. One side, researched by a science policy

Next, the authors write about how food has been modified throughout the years. They use the
example of cultivated rice, wheat, corn, soy, potatoes, and tomatoes have very little in common
with their ancestors. They use this example to go on to reveal that genetically modifying foods is
nothing more than hybridization, or the mating of different plants of the same species to
integrate the desired traits from several different varieties into a leading variety. The authors use
the example of the tomato and how it is commonly bred with wild tomatoes to make the plant
more resistant to pathogens, nematodes, and fungi while eradicating any unwanted traits from the
wild plant such as toxins. This example, as a whole is a brilliant use of ethos. It displays that
genetically modified foods are healthy and safe because it compares this new technology to a
technique that has been done for thousands of years that has never been thought of as dangerous.
More importantly, this comparison shows that the authors are credible and that they use their
evidence wisely and correctly. Biotechnology is not just a new fad. Prakash and Conko stated,
And a review of 81 separate research projects conducted over 15 years all funded by the European

their goal. Acceptance plays an integral role because it is an ultimate truth of the living because
some stages of the life, we have to accept unwanted things, or sometimes we accept things for our
satisfaction. In order words, life is all about acceptance. Similarly, in the story My Own Life by
Oliver Sacks, the author uses the appeal to authority to show how his thinking changes about life
after getting inspired by the philosopher David Hume to accepts the fact of death. The author
accepts the natural fact of death and how he motivated himself to live his rest of life with

He decides to fight to accomplish his motive. The narrator uses the comparison to show the
parallels between the life of a soldier and the man who wins over a bear years ago after a long

over his enemy. While fighting against the enemy the soldier was injured. The skull gives him a
new ray of hope after he noticed the arrow points through the skull to the eye of the bear. In
addition, the narrator shows how his own thoughts assist the person himself not to accept the
victory of his enemy, as in the text narrator states, the arrow could not have killed the bear.
Blinded him, yes enraged him, but not killed him , which shows that how that man fights with a

Analysis Of Blake Pierce s Cause To Kill, A Murder Mystery
Cause to Kill, a murder mystery written by Blake Pierce is a story about Avery Black, a
homicide investigator, and her struggle to complete and solve her first murder case. Avery Black
is written to be both passive and emotionally stable, and knowing Avery s past and current state
of being, this is seen to be untrue. If Pierce used more depth, detail and information, Avery s
character could be greatly developed. The way Avery carries herself, her past, and her present, is
strong and powerful. Knowing specific details about Avery s reactions and thoughts to specific
people and powers would better help Avery Blake live outside the book.
The way Pierce describes Avery s interactions with other people makes her seem passive and an
easy target for taunts, but knowing her past, the readers know this to be false. As the book
begins, Avery is being introduced by Captain Mike O Malley: Last but not least, He said in his
thick accent, I d like to welcome Avery Black to HomicideSquad. A few perfunctory claps filled
the room, which otherwise remained embarrassingly silent (Pierce 20). This dialogue does not
take Avery s actions and feelings into accountability. If these aspects were shown and developed,
it could clue the reader in on Avery s personality and mind. Avery Black, a previous defense
attorney, had her life crumble due to a mistake in the field, and even though everything in her
life is shattered, she somehow remains stable. Knowing this promotion to the Homicide Squad
is a large risk for all parties involved, one person in such a position would most certainly unable to
keep their cool. Officer Ramirez was the only officer who would work with Avery, and the
response of bystanding officers shows how Avery s normal treatment will be. Go get her tiger.
Break her in right. Avery shook her head Nice, she said (Pierce 30). Avery s response is not the
one expected, and she lets the comments slide. Knowing the position she was in and how she was
treated, it is a surprise that a strong female protagonist like Avery would let foolish men be this way
to her. The author does not give the readers much insight to how Avery had taken their actions,
therefore lacking the needed character development The issue at

  • 7. Erruption In Pompeii Introduction: A significant event that occurred in Ancient Rome is the eruption of Mt Vesuvius which destroyed the towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum, killing around 2000 people. The Mt Vesuvius eruption was a Plinian eruption sending volcanic ash hurdling towards the sky sending out deadly gases which was the main causes of the death of the people of Pompeii and Herculaneum. It left the towns covered and hidden for many years until archaeologist discovered these sites. This was significant because it opened a great deal of insight into how the Romans went about their day, how they decorated their homes, what materials they used to decorate their homes, building structures and much more information that proved to be very helpful in our understanding of how Romans lived and how they went about their everyday lives. Now came the dust, though still thinly. I look back: a dense cloud looms behind us, following us like a flood poured across the land. Background of the Eruption: ... • 8. Military Maps In the Yale Center for British Art, one can find a beautiful map, titled: The Description of Jarsey a(nn)o 1600. One noticeable trait that stands out with this map compared to others in the 16th and early 17th centuries is the exquisite detail of topographical features. According to an exhibition of the map, this is from the collection of George Legge, first Baron Dartmouth; previously in the English Royal map collection (Yale Center, From the Collection). One might wonder why a map, with the extensive detail that this has, would be in the hands of the Royal Collection and thus commissioned by Queen Elizabeth. According to R. A. Skelton: it is not difficult to see how, in the course of business, some maps might have come into the hands... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On the map, one can see a tool indicating the scale of the map. This same looking tool can be found in the book Compass and Rule in an exhibition called Bartholomew Newsam, set of drawing instruments, c. 1570. This is the only known surviving Elizabethton drawing set in modern day (Gerbino 61). This tool could have been used to scale the map, which can be seen in the one square mile gridlines. In addition, by connecting these tools to those used likely by military engineers, one can assume that the gridlines had a purpose besides denoting the scale of the map. If only the scale was important, the British could have simply put a key on the map showing 1 inch = 1 square mile, for example. Since they drew the entire grid, it could be interpreted as being done to perhaps reproduce the map for military purposes. It may have been easier to redraw the map to accurate scale by producing these gridlines. Thus, one could predict that this map may have been reproduced in a smaller form for military personnel to effectively defend this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Analysis Of The Article Power, Privilege, And Landscape... The article, Power, Privilege, and Landscape in Minoan Art by Anne P. Chapin, seeks to examine the previous interpretations of Minoan landscape frescoes, and add her own arguments towards the debate of religious versus secular. She presents the conclusion that while Minoan landscape art did have religious elements, the frescos presence was not an indication of a religious shrine. However, she also introduces the idea that they helped to assert the dominance of an eliteclass, who sought to demonstrate that they were influenced and connected with the divine. Chapin begins her article with an examination of the problems of previous interpretations of the landscape frescoes that have become so iconic and symbolic of Minoan art. The true meaning behind them has been contested since their discovery by Arthur Evan s. Arthur Evans viewed them in a more secular sense. Which, as the author pointed out on page 48, is most likely a result of being raised as an elite Victorian. He was more inclined to view the great artworks as proof of the cultural superiority (pg 48) of the Minoans, rather than demonstrations of a pagan religionhe had no part in. However, Chapin does not find flaws just in Evans analysis, but as well with the more modern interpretations, which place more importance on potential religious meanings. But as Chapin points out on page 51, paraphrasing from Christos Doumas, what constitutes a religious shrine in Aegean prehistory is unknown. So to claim a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

EST sequences with vector sequence were edited using Phrap cross match application. Contig Assembly Program 3 (Cap3) was used to assemble the sequences obtained from sequencing for analysis while Consed/Autofinish software was used to control the sequence assembly. All sequences were assembled separately into contigs. BLAST of sequences was conducted to determine the gene homology in order to connect their functions. Unique sequences were analysed for biological characteristics as well as functional annotation using program BLAST2GO. New genes can then be identified eventually. Results Two cDNA libraries were established from olive leaf and fruit, with 2304 clones and 1536 clones respectively. A total of 3840 EST sequences was generated from the two cDNA libraries. 106 low quality EST sequences were removed by using Phred software. 3734 EST sequences with vector sequence were edited using Phrap cross match application. EST sequences and 1506 high quality fruit EST sequences were assembled using Contig Assembly Program 3 (Cap3) to assemble the sequences separately into contigs. Managing Religious Conflict in Therapy Running Head: MANAGING RELIGIOUS CONFLICT Managing Religious Conflict within Psychotherapy Ryan Hagen UMASS Lowell Abstract This paper discusses the relationship of religion and psychology within the setting of interpersonal dynamic psychotherapy. It raises the question of whether and to what extent religionshould be included in a therapeutic setting. Varying perspectives on this issue are reviewed, followed by an examination of the consequences of addressing religion within therapy. Several examples are offered of potential pit falls a therapist may encounter in this situation as well as suggestions for minimizing the likelihood of these occurrences. Two models are included which provide frameworks for assessing the degree... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1989, Richards, in a study of 100 Mormon patients, found that they were more trusting of therapists who disclosed a belief in god. A lot of this depends on the patient. Quackenbos (et al 1986) outlined four viewpoints or degrees of involvement a person may have with their religion, and how it is used to interpret mental health. The four viewpoints are orthodox, moderate, neutralist and atheistic. These lay on a continuum, where those with orthodox viewpoints believe mental problems are caused by sin, and on the other end, atheistic sees mental problems as purely psychological. Another framework was proposed by Batson and Ventis (1982). They argued that a therapist s need to understand the different ways of being religious in order to understand the impact that religion may or may not have on their patient. They created their framework around 3 dimensions, each of which has it s own continuum. The 3 dimensions are quest, ends and means. The quest continuum measures the degree of importance the individual places on existential questions, but does not necessarily feel an urgency to have answered. An example of this would be an agnostic, or a philosopher who enjoys the process of examining these kinds of questions. A person on the high end of this continuum would tend to have doubts about religion, and be tentative about religious viewpoints. The means continuum ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Abuse Of Power In Oleanna Oleanna, a play by David Mamet, is a drama play that focuses on two characters; John, a University Professor and Carol, one of his students that accuses him of sexual misconduct. Throughout the three acts of Oleanna, the developmental changes in each character leads to a gradual power shift from John to Carol. This can be seen through the John s preset authority as a professor at the beginning, Carol s gradual acquisition of the power by adjusting her behavior to John s, and John s inevitable downfall. In Act 1, John s higher status over Carol as is established. He condescendingly listens to her and interrupts her many questions with an expanded vocabulary which is barely understandable, especially not to Carol, whose vocabulary is very simplistic. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Right off the bat, the viewer notices that Carol s choice of clothing has changed. She is no longer wearing a loose jumper and long skirt, but rather a more professional looking blazer. This ensemble eerily resembles John s. As a University Professor, he chooses to wear a suit to project an aura of authority and even leadership, which is what Carol is trying to establish for herself by mimicking the way John dresses. In addition to that, Carol is no longer the soft spoken, timid girl from Act 1, but rather it is she who is well spoken and articulate. She becomes more assertive and interrupts her professor s various rants with remarks of scrutiny. Towards the beginning, during one of his many rants, John uses the word paradigm to which Carol replies; I don t know what a paradigm is. (Mamet 45) and when John tells her that it means model she replies, with a great deal of hostility; Then why can t you use that word? (Mamet 45). In addition to that, John realizes that he is loosing control over the situation a little bit, so he tries to wheel Carol back in to being the naГЇve, soft spoken girl she was in Act 1. After reading her letter of complaint, John sits down with her and puts on a show of great compassion saying Now, I see I have angered you. I understand your anger at teachers. I was angry with mine. • 13. After reading each of them carefully, I noticed that the poems contained similarities as well as differences. Hanging Fire features a fourteen year old girl who discusses her thoughts and concerns directly with the audience. She talks about various things as she moves from one topic to another randomly. For instance, the fourteen year old girl is concerned about her visual identity such as braces and ashy knees. Suddenly, she is contemplating about serious concerns like death. In the first stanza, she states that she is in love with an immature boy who still sucks his thumb in private, worried about her skin condition as her skin has betrayed her, and worried about dying when she says, what if I die/before morning (Line 8 9). In the second stanza, she goes on to tell us that she feels inadequate from a social perspective. She says that she wants to learn to dance in order to fit in. However, she also indicates that she doesn t want to learn. Those things along with too much/that has to be done, imply that she is overwhelmed and she needs guidance (Line 20 21). However, that much needed guidance isn t there as her mamma is in the bedroom/ with the door closed (Line 10 11). • 14. Iago And Iago In William Shakespeare s Othello Humans do not recognize the devastating destruction that words are capable of having when in the right hands. The play Othello, written by William Shakespeare, demonstrates the conceivable power that dwells within words through the character Iago. The character, Iago, has a complete understanding of his victims nature down to their essence. In addition, because he does not have any core beliefs or morals, Iagogains the ability to ultimately change his faith and principals. In short, the biggest factor that contributes to Iago s successful manipulation is his ability to carefully select words in the language. Iago understands his companions to the very core by having complete knowledge of their behavior and beliefs. He is able to fully grasp what his victim is thinking in situations and takes full advantage of it to profit him. Othello is an exquisite example of Iago s expertise in the English language and shows how fatal it can become. In the following lines Othello and Iago are conversating about the plausible relationships between Cassio and Desdemona: Othello: O, yes, and went between us very oft. (act III. sc iii. Ll 100 105) This short interaction between Iago and Othello is the beginning of Iago implanting the poison of doubt into Othello s mind. Othello never suspects the loyalty of Desdemona however, Iago destroys the foundation of this trust by continuously influencing Othello to think about it. He is an expert when it comes to the complexity of the human mind and it allows him complete insight into Othello s psyche. In the quotation, Iago is seen constantly questioning Othello. Othello desires an answer but instead encounters another question. Notice that Iago questions Cassio s devotion to Othello; the moment Othello brings him up in their conversation: O, yes, and went between us very oft. Indeed? . Iago is forcing Othello to re evaluate Cassio, thus implanting the seed of doubt into his mind. Later, the seed is seen sprouting roots because Othello then questions Cassio as to ... Thank goodness that she decided to see her doctor and that her doctor was available to see her in a timely manner! Cann was told that she caught her disease just in the nick of time to give her a favorable prognosis. Why is it so hard to catch ovarian cancer early? The difficulty in catching ovarian cancer early lies in the elusive nature of the signs and symptoms. The most common symptoms reported are increased fatigue, needing to pee more often, persistent bloating, and stomachaches. Because ovarian cancer can become so large as to obstruct other organs in the body, women can sometimes feel unusually full only after a small meal or snack. This can cause some patients to lose their appetites as well. When working women and full time mothers are bustling around the house or office, it can be easy to miss these changes in your body. • 17. How Social And Political Procedures Affects Resilience At... This paper has demonstrated and examines how series of social and political procedure affects resilience at various spatial scales. Resilience is defined as the ability of individuals or communities to withstand and rebound from sudden natural disaster [earthquake, flood or hurricane] that accounts for the loss of life and properties. However, the definition of resilience is broad as resilience thinkers [Charles Holling and Neil Adger] have argued differently. For example, Holling defines resilience as the ability of a system to absorb change of state variable, driving variables, and parameters, and still persist (Holling, 1973), while Adger, defines resilience as the ability of groups or communities to cope with external stresses and disturbances as a result of social, political and environmental change (Adger, 2000). Understandably, thinker like Adger and Holling as Climate Changethinkers within the academic space have a different opinion to what constitutes the impact of climatechange and best possible approaches needed towards building resilience within social and political frameworks. This paper argues prevalently that, resilience is shaped by social and political discourse emphasizing on vulnerability and climate change adaptation methods such as Livelihood and Economic Diversification (LED) and Community based adaptation (CBA). The essay further argues that resilience is debated at multi levels [local, state, and global] but global policy makers often dominate the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. The Satirical Transformation Of Gulliver Essay The Satirical Transformation of Gulliver Swift s Gulliver s Travels is difficult to come to terms with for a multitude of reasons. The most immediate problem is that of genre. How may Gulliver s Travels be categorized? It s a fiction; it s written in prose; it s a children s tale; it s a comedy; it s a tragedy; however, to say this is to say very little. Clearly it s satirical, but that is not to say it s a satire. Arther E. Case, for example, thinks that it s not a satire: it would be more accurate and more illuminating to call it a politico sociological treatise much of which is couched in the medium of satire (Four Essays on Gulliver s Travels p. 105). In response to Case s classification, I offer a question: what s the purpose of formal specification if there are numerous imprecise labels to which this work may conform? Swift s masterpiece should be entitled to its own donnГ©e; thus, for the sake of this essay, I will shy from all comprehensive forms of categorization. Instead, I ll consider Gulliver s Travels on its own terms, sui generis, to interpret its unique presuppositions, many of which are expressed satirically. By allowing Gulliver, an uncritical lover of man, to become a hypercritical hater of man, Swift has it both ways: Gulliver functions as both the object and instrument of satire (Four Essays on Gulliver s Travels 106). Perhaps one could reduce Gulliver s voyage to the country of the Houyhnhnms by describing it as a carefully devised fable; however, this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The ASQ has shown to produce high specificity across questionnaire intervals but with lower and varying levels of sensitivity (McKnight, 2014). One of the key recommendations by the American Academy of Pediatrics is early recognition of neurodevelopmental impairment, so the ASQ is way for providers to screen their patients for possible delays or impairments. A regulatory approved Deed of Cross Guarantee has existed in Australia since 1991. All subsidiaries party to a Deed of Cross Guarantee must make a solvency statement. HIH and its subsidiary, FAI insurance had cross guarantees in place. As a result of the cross guarantee, HIH adopted a group enterprise perspective when attesting to its regulatory solvency position. The company treated insurance subsidiaries as if they were part of a singular corporate group and netted off related company assets and liabilities in several APRA annual returns . This contributed to the fact that the auditors did not identify that some subsidiaries were potentially insolvent. Contracts are made for commercial bargains. A contract is legally binding. It entails selling or hire of commodities such as services, goods or land. The major elements required for a legally binding contract are offer and its acceptance . When one person expresses an offer on outlined terms to contract and the offeree indicates that they have agreed to the set terms, the contract becomes legally binding. There is usually no room for negotiations after a contract has been made. Therefore, an offer that is valid must be in existence. There are requirements for existence of such a valid offer. This essay assesses the requirements. For an offer to be valid, contracting parties in a commercial transaction must be having an intention of entering into an agreement that is legally binding. Therefore, both the offeror and the offeree must be ready to create a relationship that is legal in manner . This ensures that either parties can sue the other in case they do not adhere to provisions of the terms in the contract. If the parties are in a commercial relationship that is not legally binding, then that is not a contract. It may be subject to contract which means that the terms of the relationship will become legally binding once the parties sign the subsequent contract. The average increase in all forms of hate crimes rose by 41% between 2016 2017 (Farivar, 2017). Hence, inarguable statistics and numbers establish a very high rate of increase in hate crimes, most especially during 2016 2017, coinciding with the campaign and subsequent election of Donald Trump. There are many theories of crime, with criminologists, psychologist and sociologists, debating whether criminality is an an outcome of nature, as in genetically inherited, or produced by nurture (Brinkerhoff, White and Ortega, 2011). Even though the debate is ongoing, most criminologists, sociologists and psychologists agree that cases in which criminality is linked to nature, are extremely rare. Instead, they emphasise, criminality as a product of nurture (Brinkerhoff, White and Ortega, 2011). This means that people who commit heinous hate crimes were presumably raised in an environment which expressed extreme prejudice towards a certain racial, ethnic or religious group and truly believed that the world would be a better place without them in it, or, at least, without them living in the United States (Brinkerhoff, White and Ortega, 2011). As indicated, hate crimes can be explained through the use of theory and, one such theory is the symbolic interactionism theory. As criminologists were engaged in attempting to ... • 36. Chile 1960 Research Paper In Valdivia, Chile 1960 an earthquake changed the lives of many. An earthquake is the violent shaking of the ground that will destroy homes, buildings, landforms, historical monuments, and lives. Earthquakes begin with the breakage of rock along a fault line. When two tectonic plates rub against each other they create an earthquake. Earthquakes will ride along a fault line which will determine how long the quake will go on. The larger and longer the fault like the bigger the earthquake. Earthquakes send out waves, primary waves or, p waves and secondary waves or, s waves travel along the interior of the earth. These two waves are called body waves. While detecting the waves, the primary waves appear first then the secondary waves. Primary waves travel through solids, liquids, and gasses, which means they are about to travel through the liquid center. Secondary waves are only able to travel through solids which are why scientists have found that there is a loss of these waves once they reach the center.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 39. Theme Of Fate In Oedipus The King Oedipus the King: Fate or Free will Throughout Oedipus the King, the concept of fate and free will plays an essential part in Oedipus destruction. This story describes the suffering of Oedipus as a result of a misfortune of which he has no control over. Oedipus is a play that demonstrates how a person s life can either be destined to take a certain path or be based on the decisions a person makes throughout their life. There are no oracles or prophecies that can determine how an individual s life turns out to be, but according to Sophoclesthe gods cursed Oedipuseven before he was born. This is a tragic event of a conflict between the powerful gods, his blindness, a man s inability to change his destinyand his intelligence. Oedipus does not deserve all the tragedies that happened to him, and he is a victim of fate. The gods had already proclaimed Oedipus fate even before he knew it. His fate has been bound since the day he was born and there is no way it can be avoided. The herdsman says If you are the man he says you are, you re bred to misery . (1361 1362) This means that he was born to be miserable, no matter what kind of person he turns out to be. Everyone already knew the outcome would turn out horrible as it is expected. E.R Dodds says ...is that man has no free will but is a puppet in the hands of the gods who pull the strings that make him dance. (35) This shows how the gods are controlling him and his future life. The gods had cursed him which means he has been controlled since the beginning just like puppets. This metaphor serves as a perfect example of what Oedipus goes through. Some of his actions were unintentional, however some of them were ignorant and this is what s stopping him from uncovering the truth. The day Oedipus meets Teiresias, he tells him that Oedipus is the murderer of Laius. Oedipus cannot believe that Teiresias would say such things. He was not convinced of the reality and accuses Teiresias of being a liar. Oedipus says Not twice shall say calumnies like this and stay unpunished . (415 416) Oedipus is considered ignorant because although he is given knowledge from the wiser character, he chooses to ignore the facts and continue looking for the killer. Gould mentions ... • 44. President Woodrow Wilson s Speech Throughout the semester Joseph Nye s signature concepts of hard and soft power have been analyzed amongst the backdrop of U.S. foreign relations. Hard power is the use of coercion i.e. military and economic means to influence the behavior of other political bodies (Hudson). This contrasts to Soft power which is the use of attraction to produce desired foreign policy results [by focusing] on three key resources: culture, political values, and foreign policies (Hudson). Through the wielding and usage of the tools of soft power ideas about U.S. values and culture have been able to attract partners and support to Washington without the use of force and/or threat of further war and atrocity. Due to this fact it appears soft power is more integral to influencing foreign relations, especially when considering the effects of actions such as President Woodrow Wilson s establishment of a Committee on Public Information, President Franklin D. Roosevelts Four FreedomsSpeech, and President Harry Truman s support for the Marshall Plan. The first key resource of soft power, culture, can be addressed when speaking to the establishment of the Committee on Public Information (CPI) by President Woodrow Wilson on April 13, 1917 in order to usher support for U.S. participation in World War I. Women s Roles in The Yellow Wallpaper and The Withered Arm Women s Roles in The Yellow Wallpaper and The Withered Arm In the late 19th century, women were expected to conform to the conventions of society. This meant that they were expected to get married young, pure and beautiful. They were treated like objects as if men bought them. How the woman felt was irrelevant in this period. Women were expected to produce an heir and a spare . Women were also victim to double standards. For example, women had to deal with a child out of wedlock yet were given no responsibility for this. In The Yellow Wallpaper, Gilman also shows sympathy for the plight of women. Like Hardy, she also uses the sympathetic background technique when she illustrates the oppression of the speaker by John and by society. This is illustrated clearly from the very beginning of the story where the speaker says But what is one to do? This shows how she feels she is being trapped and oppressed by society s expectations of her. In The Withered Arm, I feel that Farmer Lodge genuinely believed that he was doing nothing wrong be ignoring and looking down on Rhoda and her son because he felt society expected him to do that, however other people may believe that it was unfair that a woman was left in that position. In The Yellow Wallpaper, I feel that John acted caringly towards the speaker, whereas others may feel that John was over protective. In both stories, the female characters were expected to conform to societies expectations of them and if they did not, they were ostracised from society. Analysis Of Blake Pierce s Cause To Kill, A Murder Mystery Cause to Kill, a murder mystery written by Blake Pierce is a story about Avery Black, a homicide investigator, and her struggle to complete and solve her first murder case. Avery Black is written to be both passive and emotionally stable, and knowing Avery s past and current state of being, this is seen to be untrue. If Pierce used more depth, detail and information, Avery s character could be greatly developed. The way Avery carries herself, her past, and her present, is strong and powerful. Knowing specific details about Avery s reactions and thoughts to specific people and powers would better help Avery Blake live outside the book. The way Pierce describes Avery s interactions with other people makes her seem passive and an easy target for taunts, but knowing her past, the readers know this to be false. As the book begins, Avery is being introduced by Captain Mike O Malley: Last but not least, He said in his thick accent, I d like to welcome Avery Black to HomicideSquad. A few perfunctory claps filled the room, which otherwise remained embarrassingly silent (Pierce 20). This dialogue does not take Avery s actions and feelings into accountability. If these aspects were shown and developed, it could clue the reader in on Avery s personality and mind. Avery Black, a previous defense attorney, had her life crumble due to a mistake in the field, and even though everything in her life is shattered, she somehow remains stable.
