How Gender Comes Into Play
In my previous paper I was very interested in how gender comes into play when it comes to how
people balance paid work and family time. This was really interesting to me because as a
daughter I was really interested to see if any of the themes that I saw reminded of when I was
young. Even more than that, however, I was interested to see what might happen to me as I get
older, get married, and start having children. While I am young now, I am very eager to settle
down and have a familyso I was very curious at the different themes that I would see when I
interviewed a married women, who was Named Lucy .
The themes that I did see in my research were inequality, a very traditional family dynamic
(which I thought was caused by a gender trap), and family myths. The division of household labor
in this family was very traditional, the mother, who I interviewed, was the one who did most, if
not all, of the household labor along with working a full time job. That led me to believe that they
had a very traditional family dynamic, even though that might not be the true ideology of the
women I interviewed. I picked up on a few things while I was interviewing her that I think led to
the traditional division of labor. I thought that they were very much caught in a gender trap,
meaning that they think that they have to do what is typical for their gender. That meant that the

Fugard, alienation is definitely one of the most apparent themes because in both books the main
characters are always told that they are different like when Mariam is called harami and when
Sam and Willy are discriminated by Hally. In both of these texts, the main characters are
alienated in a way that made them feel so different to the point where it affected their lives
because they always felt like they are incapable. In A Thousand Splendid Suns, after Mariam
was always called a harami, meaning bastard in Arabic, by Nana, she always thought that this
small thing somehow made her incapable of going to school and other simple things in life. In

Dostoevsky s Underground Man is quite possibly the most interesting anti hero in all of literature.
His unique worldview has both shocked and puzzled readers since the novella s publication. One
of his key characteristics is his tendency towards paradox, especially concerning doubt, shame, and
spitefulness. These paradoxes seem to reflect his era, of which he is often critical to the point of
exhaustion. Other features of the Underground Man s psyche mirror the nineteenth century as well.

Just by looking at him, you aren t going to know that Dan Savage is a newspaper column writer for

People need heroes because everyone needs somebody to look up to. Dan is my hero because not
only is he standing up for a community, but he doesn t have to do anything about the problems in

as unprejudiced. Although, he has shown the trait of unprejudiced by starting the It Gets Better
