How The Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents, By Julia Alvarez
Many people from all over the world migrate to the United States for a variety of reasons,
education, work, freedom, or for crimes like selling drugs, violence, terrorism , etc. Yet, after
typically coming to the United States at a young age, they call it home. It being the only place they
know, since they never return to their native country. For instance, Julia Alvarez in her novel, How
the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents, refers to the immigration experience, because after their initial
struggle, immigrants feel more at home in the United Statesthan in their own countries.
In America, they are free to do what they please if they are of age and follow certain obvious laws.
In Julia Alvarez s novel, Yolanda; the main character visits her

Post-Course Views On Domestic Violence
Post course Views of Domestic Violence
Domestic Violence
Lecture module 2 states, Domestic violence is physical, sexual, psychological or financial violence
that takes place within an intimate or family type relationship and that forms a pattern of coercive
and controlling behavior. Domestic violence may include a range of abusive behaviors, not all of
which are in themselves inherently violent . My definition is very similar to this definition because
it hits the points of physical, sexual, and psychological violence also. Another similarity is the
controlling and power behavior in a relationship within a home. Although, a difference is this
definition says, Domestic violence may include a range of abusive behaviors, not all of which are
in themselves inherently violent , and my first definition it was a constant factor with frequency of
abuse.
My view hasn t changed since the beginning of the course because I knew the basic concepts of

There is different groups of offenders including some that are not emotionally aroused at the time of
the offense but are focused and calculating in their attacks and emotionally distant from their
victims, some unlikely to present with personality disorders but often have attachment problems,
others that use aggression to achieve some desired outcome. Those are different characteristics and
values of different offenders.
My views of offenders have changed since I have got to understand not all offenders have the same
thoughts and feelings. Offenders characteristics and values depend on what they see as motivation
and satisfaction for them as an individual. Some factors why offenders abuse include over usage of
drugs or alcohol, past history of seeing their family doing the same actions, psychological problems,

Great dynasties in Imperialistic China
Ancient China was always able to flourish as a powerful economic and imperialistic country.
Behind this great amount of early success were great dynasties that played great roles in China s
history. China has always been highly influenced by its great ancient dynasties. These dynasties
were able to establish monetary systems, road and canal systems for trade, and also build great
elaborate historic structures that still stand today. They also influenced different philosophies such
as Taoism and Confucianism. In the long history of China, many great dynasties appear that have
helped a lot to the development of the whole country. Among them, there are... Show more content

They also built a tomb for the emperor containing giant detailed sculptures of each one of his
soldiers called the Terracotta Army. Even though this dynasty only lasted 15 years, the Qin s hold
an important part in Chinese history and it shows great influence on the later dynasties. The Han
dynasty was another highly successful dynasty in Chinese history it covered over four centuries
from 206 BC 220 AD and it is known as the Golden Age in Chinese history. They were considered
this for many reasons; they had the city of Chang an which was one of the two largest cities in
the ancient world at this time. The dynasty had a large growth in population and urbanization
which allowed for an increase of industry and trade which developed on the Silk Road routes.
This ultimately led to an increase in economic growth. This empire had Liu Bang ruling as the
first emperor but under him they had a bureaucracy so they also implemented a civil service exam
to ensure the best people fit for the job were working in the government and under the emperor.
The Han dynasty s government system was in some way implemented throughout the imperial
history of China. The Hans also improved iron amour and swords by making them stronger and
more flexible. With new and improved weapons and tactics

Taryn Simon Research Paper
Taryn Simon is a photographer who was shot down by Walt Disney because he believes that
photography shuts down the fantasy that guests are expected to uphold while visiting his theme
parks. He went on the say that what is in the parks allow the guests to fantasize and escape
reality. I suppose somehow a real image takes away the instinct mentally to create one s own. I
feel that for business he has a point because Disneyland is supposed to mesmerize a person and
take them on a journey that can not be taken anywhere else. If that image were to change to the
public, it would not be as popular or profitable. On the other hand, I do think photography can
have that same effect on one s mind. Taryn states that she chose to look inward because she
wanted to confront the boundaries of the citizen, self imposed and real, and comfort the divide
between privileged and public access to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The photographs in this series are of men and women Taryn met around the world who had been
convicted of crimes they did not commit. She says that some of those people were convicted by
being pointed out in an image by a witness. This is because of law enforcements wrongful use of
images. An example was a woman who had been raped and saw some similarities in a man while
looking at photographs. Then in another photograph search the same picture of the man with
similarities was present and by then she felt sure the rapist was him, only it wasn t. She had just
replaced the memory with the photograph. As an observer, I definitely consider her work as art
because she has dedicated her talent to exposing the truth that has done some good in lives. The
best part about art is that it comes in many forms, and Taryn found the perfect way/form that
worked for her. Not to mention, her pictures were pretty amazing. The way she captured the
emotion and innocence of the

The Three Types of Ancient Chinese Rulers
In ancient China, many different rulers tried to unify and rule the country using a variety of
methods Confucianism, Daoism, and Legalism to name a few. Each philosophy had its own set
of rules of how people should act both in public and privately. The overall goal of each
philosophy was to set a standard of acceptable living that would ensure harmony and success for
the society. However, each was different and thus had different results. Legalism is a philosophy
emphasizing strict obedience to the legal system. It was one of the main philosophic currents
during the Warring States period and when it was most prominent. The school s most famous
proponent and contributor, Han Fei believed that a ruler should use the following three tools to
govern his subjects: law, method, and legitimacy. The law code must be clearly written and made
public. All people under the ruler were equal before the law. Laws should reward those who obey
them and punish accordingly those who dare to break them. Thus it is guaranteed that actions taken
are systematically predictable. In addition, the system of law, not the ruler, ran the state, a
statement of rule of law. If the law is successfully enforced, even a weak ruler will be strong.
Especially important is that no one can fathom the ruler s motivations, and thus no one can know
which behavior might help them get ahead, other than following the laws. Legitimacy is the
position of the ruler, not the ruler himself or herself, that holds the

Safety Of Aspartame
The article Leading Scientists Around the World Confirm Safety of Aspartame has several
problems with their reasons that aspartame is safe. The expert team concluded through controlled
scientific studies that aspartame is safe. The study also states, Aspartame is a well characterized,
thoroughly studied, high intensity sweetener that has a long history of safe use in the food supply
and can help reduce the caloric content of a wide variety of foods (Leading Scientists). If aspartame
is safe than why have complaints been made to the FDA regarding the side effects of aspartame

that states aspartame has undergone numerous testing and with the exception of a few slight side
effects, aspartame seems to be rather safe. The article indicated that the Centers for Disease
Control (CDC) evaluated more than 500 reports on the problems associated with aspartame. The
reports showed that two thirds of the people suffered neurological problems while one quarter of
the people suffered gastrointestinal problems. The neurological symptoms included headaches,
mood alterations, insomnia, dizziness, and fatigue. Abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, and
vomiting were the gastrointestinal symptoms that people experienced. The CDC concluded that
the side effects that people reported were mild and are common in the overall public. I disagree
with the conclusion that aspartame is safe. If aspartame was truly safe there would have been no
reason for people to make reports concerning the side effects they experienced from consuming
aspartame. Yes, it s true that nothing is considered 100 percent safe, but after 500 reports were
received on the consumption of aspartame it s easy to concluded that aspartame is not safe. As
with any report or study you read the material is only as accurate as the data that backs it up. If
you search the internet you will find numerous reports, studies, and articles listing the side effects
of aspartame. I can t imagine that all of the articles are not

Sexual Connotation In Roland Barthes s The Death Of The...
Roland Barthes essay the Death of the Author (1968) marks the transition from structuralism to
poststructuralism , in which he celebrates the demise of the author as ushering in an era of joyous
freedom (Barry 65) granted to the literary text and its reading. The text becomes an open ended
and a polysemic discourse, and as such open to multiple meanings. He favours the essential verbal
condition of literature , in which the role of the reader is that of something who holds together in a
single field all the traces [intertextuality included] by which the written text is constituted (Leitch
1324 25). His poststructuralist perspective makes him see a text s unity lying not in its origin (an
author), but its destination (a reader). In... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the process of occurrence of writing, Barthes sees, the reader as experiencing the intensities, the
pleasure of the text, the erotics of reading texts that are always coming into being. Barthes equates
the reading experience, so often, with a kind of orgasmic , thus, giving it hedonistic or say inherent
sexual connotation .
In his essays From Work to Text and Theory of the Text Barthes contrasts the traditional author
based notion of The Work with The Text , and state that while a work can be held in the hand and
seen on the shelves of libraries and bookshops, the text only exists when it is produced by the new
reader . To him the Text is experienced only in an activity, in a production (Barthes cited in Allen
83).
To Barthes, as has been pointed out, the text is a kind of woven or spun fabric seen as made up of
quotations, references, and echoes . Never the less, this intertextual weave is potentially infinite in
the sense that when we come to deal with the text we find it as if it has been something already
written and the already said . The new reader of the text notices that the quotations a text is made of
are anonymous, irrecoverable, and yet already read: they are quotations without quotation marks

Barn Burning Loyalty Theme
The Theme that is most commonly determined from the story Barn Burning is the loyalty of
Sartoris Snopes to his family/Father or the loyalty to the law. Throughout Barn Burning I read
about how the snopes family is viewed by the people around them. With my thought of how you
can be very loyal to your Blood but instantaneously change your mind and possibly backstab each
other, which in Barn Burning this is a questioned to be asked as if Sarty is considered
BackStabbing or doing the right thing. The phrase Blood is thicker than water is a very
questionable phrase which I have applied to help me furthermore explain about loyalty. Does this
also mean that following familyis suppose to be the road for sarty to take. If it were me I would
have had loyalty to what my family or dad was like towards me.... Show more content on

Within a family there should be loyalty throughout every person. For me it depends on who has
been there for me or I know. Like sarty and his family, they all are assumed to be attached to the
label that they all are worthless because of the father s actions. Depending on the relationship or
the bond I have will determine how far my loyalty goes for that family member. Being loyal to
family might be everything but like in Barn Burning being loyal to the wrong choices heavily
affected Sarty Snopes.

Success is the accomplishment of aim or purpose , Success is something everbody want but don t

Tennis Essay
As we all know, America is a nation of sports enthusiasts. Most Americans participate is some
kind of sporting event, either as a spectator or as a competitor. In the pantheon of great American
sports, there is one that stands out. It has been called the great American pastime. Yes, that great
sport known as tennis. Tennis requires a mastery of many skills to be able to play competitively,
but the primary skill needed to win in tennis is the serve. The serve is the primary offensive
weapon used I tennis, because it is the only time when a player gets to put a ball into play. The
player controls the speed, the placement, and the spin of the ball. With proper procedure, the serve
can win many points and games for the server. The technique... Show more content on

The server should hold the racket in his or her right hand, holding the right arm straight toward the
ground. The racket hand should point in the direction of the net. The server should hold the ball in
his or her left hand, touching the ball to the racket face.
The actual serve motion requires timing and speed. The server should toss the ball straight up into
the air by fully extending his or her left arm. He or she should leave the left arm fully extended to
help sight the ball as it ascends. While the ball is in the air, the server should rotate the racket head
so that it points away from the net, and then bring it straight up so that the frame almost touches the
right shoulder blade. Meanwhile, the server should shift his or her weight to the right leg. Then, as
the ball reaches the height of its ascent, the server should jump up while fully extending his or her
right arm toward the ball and slightly twisting his or her right wrist to bring the racket face into
contact with the ball. Then he or she should continue the forward motion of the racket by following
through the stroke, bringing the racket across the body so that it points toward the ground at the
server s left side.
These directions are for a right handed player. A left handed player would use the same technique,

are better able to prepare to fulfill the orders in a timely manner. This purchase order process should
be combined with a plan that incentivizes their manufacturer to process their orders quicker. They
also need to penalize the manufacture for faulty products and late delivery. Although they currently

Toco Toucan Research Paper
Measuring 63.5 cm (25 in.) in length, the Toco toucan is the largest of all toucans. Its black body
and white throat are overshadowed by its most recognizable trait: a large colorful beak. The
bright orange beak is about 19 cm (8 in.) long one third of the bird s total length. But despite its
substantial size, the beak weighs less than you may think. Toco toucans also use their beaks to
pluck and peel fruit, their main source of food. In addition, the beak houses a flat tongue of the
same length, which helps the toucan catch insects, frogs, and reptiles. Toco toucans also
occasionally eat the eggs of other birds. Although they spend a lot of time in trees, they are not
very good at flying. Toucans mainly travel among trees by hopping.

Heterogeneous Ribonucleic Proteins ( Hnrnps )
Heterogeneous ribonucleic proteins (HNRNPs) are a family of RNA binding proteins that play a
key role in various metabolic functions of RNA. There are roughly twenty major hnRNPs which
are readily found in large quantities in the nucleus and in some cases in the cytoplasm. hnRNPs are
expressed throughout all tissues at different levels depending on the hnRNP (Kamma et al. 1994).
hnRNP metabolic roles include polyadanilation, shuttling mRNA out of the nuclear envelope,
telomere biogenesis and localization. (Dreyfuss et al. 2002). In particular, hnRNP A1 can acts an an
antagonist to the SF2/ASF protein, which allows A1 to inhibitor exon splicing and cytoplasm bound
transport of mRNA. An example of localization is hnRNP A2, which confers the dendritic mRNA
transport of various transcripts when induced by neuronal activity (Muslimov et al. 2002).
Role of hnRNP A2/B1
Brain plasticity and learning such as BDNF driven long term synaptic potentiation rely partly on the
shuttling and translation of dendritic mRNAs. Large messenger RNA binding proteins such as
hnRNP A2/B1 carry inactive dendrite bound mRNA via the microtubule cytoskeleton where they
will be translated when they are activated at the synapse (Leal et al. 2014). Brain derived
neurotropic factor (BDNF) and increased neuronal activity has shown to regulate the distribution of
A2/B1. Particularly an increase in BDNF rises the tendency of cytoplasmic and and dendritic
localization. Some key protein transcripts carried by

How Gender Comes Into Play
In my previous paper I was very interested in how gender comes into play when it comes to how
people balance paid work and family time. This was really interesting to me because as a
daughter I was really interested to see if any of the themes that I saw reminded of when I was
young. Even more than that, however, I was interested to see what might happen to me as I get
older, get married, and start having children. While I am young now, I am very eager to settle
down and have a familyso I was very curious at the different themes that I would see when I
interviewed a married women, who was Named Lucy .
The themes that I did see in my research were inequality, a very traditional family dynamic
(which I thought was caused by a gender trap), and family myths. The division of household labor
in this family was very traditional, the mother, who I interviewed, was the one who did most, if
not all, of the household labor along with working a full time job. That led me to believe that they
had a very traditional family dynamic, even though that might not be the true ideology of the
women I interviewed. I picked up on a few things while I was interviewing her that I think led to
the traditional division of labor. I thought that they were very much caught in a gender trap,
meaning that they think that they have to do what is typical for their gender. That meant that the
childcare and the housework, which is seen as more of a feminine, were up to Lucy. The other
things that were seen

This year s NBA rookies won t revolutionize the league like the class of 1984, which featured

Marius s Life
Marius, a Romanian 8 year old boy, lived a life just as every other kid his age. He attended
school, played with his friends and his dog, and helped his family with chores. Once the
accident occurred, life changed for Marius although he was always positive during his recovery
process. Both of Marius s parents died during the accident, however, he still had a large support
system. This support came from both Marius s older sister and brother who were not home at the
time of the accident. Also, the interns at the hospital provided a large amount of help to Marius as
did the interns parents and other family members. Shriners Hospital for Children in Los Angeles as
well as all of the support from teachers, home tutors, and the translator, Teodora, made the entire
recovery process possible. So even though Marius did not have his parents, he still had an

The burns made it difficult for Marius to complete ADLs and it was months before he left bed and

Achilles, Aeneas, and Roland
Imagine living in a turbulent world, where people lived their day to day lives praying that they
would see the next sunrise. That was life for villagers that lived during the times of the ancient
Greeks and Romans, as well as during the medieval period when Germanic tribes ruled Europe. To
help them get through their very insecure days, people would tell oral stories of great heroes, like
those of Achilles, Aeneas, and Roland. Achilles was a Greek war hero who fights in the Trojan War
,
a ten year long war between Greece and Troy(present day Turkey). Aeneas was an epic hero in
ancient Roman folklore. He was a soldier who fought in the Trojan War and after surviving the
destruction of Troy, he later founded the city of Rome. Roland was an... Show more content on

He was described as a model medieval hero, because he was a natural Christian leader who was
sent on a holy war to stop the Muslims from invading and converting France. He was a noble
Frenchman, who died at the hand of power and land hungry, Islamic forces. At the end of the
story, it is said that he died while he was chasing away the pagans. To this day, in the 21st
century, homo sapiens still write stories about heroes that will save them and society. The
number one characteristic that describes a hero is one that has a Stoic sense of duty that can
overcome the desire for personal fulfillment. Achilles, Aeneas, and Roland were all created to
create personal comfort for their people that lived in such a hectic and dangerous world. These
three protagonists who were viewed by their cultures as gods also showed their people that they
did portray human characterists (two out of the three even die) and that anyone can be like them if
they tried. In a way they were used to inspire their respective residents to be better civilians in their
community. If everyone could follow that, than living in a turbulent world would go from reality to

Water Is The Most Important Substances On Earth Essay
Introduction: Water is one of the most important substances on earth. Every single living
organism on earth requires water. Whether it is a clownfish living in the ocean or a big shady
maple tree getting its water from the earth, every organism needs it. Water is often times
advertised as the most pure substance on earth, however this is often times untrue. Yes, water is a
very pure substance but only when it is in its truly natural form, H2O. However, there are very
few cases where water is in its truest chemical composition. Water almost always has some sort of
chemical deposits in it, which can be measured in a hardness of the water.
The hardness of water is usually measured in parts per million (ppm) of calcium carbonate (CaCO3)
that is in a certain sample of water.1 In natural waters, the minerals that make up water aren t all in
the form of CaCO¬3. The actual minerals that make up the hardness of water are magnesium
cation and calcium cation, Mg2+ and Ca2+ respectively.1 Often times the calcium concentration is
larger than magnesium concentration. This is due to the fact that calcium is usually in almost all
types of rocks while magnesium is only found in a few for example, dolomite and olivine.1
These dissolved ions, Mg2+ and Ca2+, make up the main properties of water hardness. The
hardness of water is determined on scaling range dealing with the concentration of the ions. Water
is said to be hard if it contains a large concentrations of Ca2+ and Mg2+. On the

Descriptive Essay On Fort Fisher
Fort Fisher is one of the most beautiful places in Brunswick County. Many people travel from all
over to see the historical site. Myself, I m not much of a history person. The Aquarium here is
what really captivates me. The wildlife here and everything they do for these animals is amazing.
So much can be learned from walking through this aquarium. So many species reside here, all
different, and all special. Before entering the adventure that awaits, there are rather large fish
statues at the front of the aquarium. They are surrounded by water and it seems people have
been throwing coins in the make wishes. Upon entering the building, the first area is the fresh
waterways. As entering, there is another statue, but this time, a life size crocodile. Going
through, there is the sound of waterfalls, and the sound of mist being sprayed into the air to keep
the humidity level consistent. Walking farther in the area, the first thing that caught my eye
was a bald eagle on my left. This one hurt his left wing and could no longer fly. He was beautiful,
nonetheless. Continuing in the fresh waterways area, there are many different species of
freshwater fish. One that may catch many people s eyes is the longnose gar. It is a very odd
looking fish as it has a very long and skinny nose, and quite large, so they have a very large tank
as well. Next to the freshwater fish, this area moves on to reptiles. The next one are the snakes to
be exact. A total of five species residing in one tank.

Rise Of The Mongols Essay
The Mongols were a group of pastoral nomads who lived in the steppe area of China, now
modern day Mongolia, from as early as 600 CE, and still live there today. They lived in scattered
encampments and relied on animals for their survival. Their leader, Temujin, also known as
Ghengis Khan or Chinggis Khan, formed a small but well organized military following that spread
from the region and began a violent conquest of Eurasia that lasted from 1207 until 1266. Their
conquests were bloody, ending with between 30 and 50 million deaths. The Mongols chose to
cruelly destroy anyone who stood in their way. These battle strategies earned them a reputation of
fear, some surrendering before the mongols arrived. The Mongols, only numbering about 700,000...

The Mongol army swept across societies of Eurasia due to brutal violence, which allowed for
their rapid spread of influence because of the fear that they established through destruction.
Through the fear that came from the violence that Chinggis Khan was interested in, they were
able to exterminate any enemies who stood in their way to force societies to gain their rule. The
Mongols brutality became a key factor in the speed of their conquest when their enemies saw the
violence occurring in a neighboring region or city, and they surrendered long before contact with
the Mongols ever happened. The Mongols looked to create the expectation of coming violence;
people surrendered to the Mongols sometimes purely on the basis of rumors; being
psychologically incapable of fighting back even before the battle begun (Snapshot Reader, pg 24).

Selfishness In Thomas More s A Man For All Seasons
Lacking consideration for others and only concerned with one s own person, profit, and pleasure.
The theme that prevails throughout the book is selfishness. A man for all seasons is about a man,
a very historical figure Thomas more, a well respected man by the king and his people. Thomas
More remained silent when it came to his judgment and thought over king henry s divorce.
Resulting, he resigns as chancellor of England and refused to take the oath. He thought he could
spare his life if he remained silent. Not long after he was imprisoned, tried and eventually executed.

Thomas more is trying to make Alice understand what he s going to do. More: Alice, if you can
tell me that you understand, I think I can make a good death if I have to. Again I choose this
quote because it really shows More s motive his real character. More was using the word death
like it was nothing. He was juggling around the word death as of it meant nothing to him. That
there shows that more was willing to go to extreme measures for his beliefs (pride). More s last
words of comfort to his daughter, More: Margaret, You have long known the secrets of my heart.
More is comforting his daughter with his last words and does not feel a single sense of guilt that
he is leaving his daughter to live without the father she loves. Instead of apologizing for his
choices he simply tells her that she was the only one that knew his heart. However, I know for a
fact that Margaret did not know or want to live without her father. This quote is saddening because
the separation of a father and daughter is overwhelmingly depressing. Thomas More putting his
family through this shows that he is absolutely

The Egg Drop Experiment
An egg is a fragile object that breaks when a small amount of force acts upon it, but many people
have tried to prevent it from breaking when it falls by building contraptions for it. The egg drop
experiment is generally used as an experiment to teach students about the concepts of physics.
There are many ways to prevent an eggfrom breaking when it falls. One example is to use a
parachute to slow down the descent of the egg. Another example is to wrap the egg in bubble
wrap to cushion the egg s landing. The technique you decide to use determines the results that you
get. I have always been interested in doing an egg drop experiment because it involves building

Workplace Violence In The Workplace
INTRODUCTION:
Violence in the workplace has become a major safety and health issue. Workplace violence is not
limited to homicide. This type of violence includes behaviors and circumstances that threaten an
employee s physical safety; such as: verbal threats, sexual or physical harassment, coercion,
behavior changes, intimidation, stalking, telephone/email harassment, and history of aggression.
Workplace violence incidents have tripled in the last decade, and it is now the fastest growing
category of murder in the United States. It is also the second leading cause of death for women in
the workplace (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2016). The United States Department of Justice declared

Additionally, Mr. Staver states that other identifiers are dramatic and unreasonable demands occur
when the individual is constantly impatient and expects an immediate response to the task, and or
project (Staver, 2012). Also, Staver stressed the importance of recognizing personal insults and
threats and notifying management of said gestures so that the organization maybe on alert and
preventive measure can be implemented (Staver, 2012). There are other identifiers of potential
workplace violence such as: an individual who have difficulty getting along with others, making
inappropriate remarks, always upset about everything and everyone. Also, there are individual who
the company and employee have no clue about because the perpetrator is an outsider, not an
employee of the organization. In this incidence, it is quite difficult to identify the potential threat.
Therefore, the organization must have a program in place to handle offsite threats that may invade
the company and cause violence and/or harm to its employees. The program(s) designed within that
particular organization will better assist that company in the scope of recognizing and avoid
potential workplace violence occurrences.

Similarities Between Freak The Mighty And The Mighty
Which medium do you think is better, Rodman Philbrick s Freak the Mighty or Peter Chelsom s
film The Mighty? Both in the novel Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick and the film, The
Mighty by Peter Chelsom portray the theme of friendship for which people can change people for
the better or for the worse towards their future.
In the novel, Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick, Max Kane is one of characters in the story that
creates a bonding friendship with a small yet sharp witted kid named Kevin and furthermore a past
relationship with both of their parents. In this manner, when an ornithopter whizzes around the air

For example, in the film The Mighty, as the ornithopter scene takes place, Max is scared away
by Kevin and no one touches the ornithopter until the end of the film but as in the novel Freak
the Mighty, Max gives back the ornithopter which starts that friendship but doesn t mention it
towards the end of the novel. Indeed, I think that the novel would portray this theme better
because I believe they had a better bonding in the novel with the ornithopter (according to the
description) than in the film with Max s learning disability. In fact, it shows throughout the
endings of both mediums that they end with Max writing in the empty book Freak told him to
for his Christmas present which I also think that is a major part throughout the novel and film
that portray Max s care for Kevin very well. Lastly, Gwen and Annie s friendship is crucial to
Max because of the way he reacts to when Gram tells him in the book but does not mention this
but part in the film Gwen moves into the house next door and is introduced by Max s family.
While it may be true for the film, I think that they should leave this event because it is important to
Max but is affected by Killer Kane s action to Annie(Max s

Impact Of Industrialization
Impact of Industrialization on American Society
Reese Aghayedo
HISTORY 1312 701: United Stated History II
September 11, 2017
During late 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century, the United States went through
rapid industrialization that drastically changed many aspects of its society. During this era, the
United States became the leading industrial capitalist of the world . This also led to tremendous
increase in demand for the working class Americans. Also, advancement in farm machinery led to
less need for manual labors in farms and rural areas. Thus, these rural workers began to migrate to
the urban areas to seek job opportunities in industries such as manufacturing and other factory jobs.
This influx of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For this reason, many workers opted to have their children and wives join the workforce. Given
that these factory owners had no legal restrictions on exploiting workers, they exploited most of
their workers. Worker were force to work long hours in a dehumanizing environment while
earning poor pay and incentives . Women and children were also exploited. Woman and children
were paid the lowest possible wages. It didn t matter if they worked more than their adult male
counterparts. Management used the deceptive ideology that woman and children should be under
the care of a man and do not require a living wage. In addition to low wages and long hours, many
workers worked in a dangerous environment. Many worked in crowded and unsanitary conditions.
As a result thousands of workers were injured and hundreds were killed each year .
Also, Industrialization resulted to the revolt of the working class Americans. As many workers
became more concern about their working conditions and pay, they decided to join together to
rebel against hash working conditions. As many industrial workers began to organize, this led to
the formation of labor unions. The goal of these unions was to protect worker s right to fair pay,
hours, and working conditions. Labor groups like the National Labor Union (NLU) and Knights of
Labor began to open up their membership to all labors, including male, female, blacks, and whites.

Theme Of Alienation In A Thousand Splendid Suns
In A Thousand Splendid Suns, by Khaled Hosseini, and Master Harold ...and the boys, by Athol
Fugard, alienation is definitely one of the most apparent themes because in both books the main
characters are always told that they are different like when Mariam is called harami and when
Sam and Willy are discriminated by Hally. In both of these texts, the main characters are
alienated in a way that made them feel so different to the point where it affected their lives
because they always felt like they are incapable. In A Thousand Splendid Suns, after Mariam
was always called a harami, meaning bastard in Arabic, by Nana, she always thought that this
small thing somehow made her incapable of going to school and other simple things in life. In
Master Harold ...and the boys, Sam and Willie, mainly Sam, was always being discriminated by
Hally. Due to this, Hally made Sam feel like he was incapable of doing certain things, like
winning a dance competition. These examples of alienation and much more are evident in both
texts and actually change the meaning of the story because it influences the way the characters
act and live their lives. This depends on how the characters are treated, and what they are made to
feel like they can not do. Starting off with A Thousand Splendid Suns, Mariam was always called
a Harami by her mother. After constantly hearing this while growing up, Mariam thought that it
was a big deal because that is the reason she is unable to live with or see

Underground Man Analysis
Dostoevsky s Underground Man is quite possibly the most interesting anti hero in all of literature.
His unique worldview has both shocked and puzzled readers since the novella s publication. One
of his key characteristics is his tendency towards paradox, especially concerning doubt, shame, and
spitefulness. These paradoxes seem to reflect his era, of which he is often critical to the point of
exhaustion. Other features of the Underground Man s psyche mirror the nineteenth century as well.
For example, his anomie is a result of his life as a clerk in (then) modern Saint Petersburg. The
Underground Man s true self may be shrouded by mystery, but it is clear that he is either telling
us that he lives in all of us through our experiences with alienation, or that if we were anywhere
near as self aware as he is, we would live underground as well. One of the most apparent themes in
Notes from Undergroundis shame. The famous opening lines, I am a sick man.... I am a spiteful
man. I am a most unpleasant man. set the tone for the rest of the book (707). These are clearly
not the words of a person who holds themselves in very high regard. The Underground Man s
shame goes beyond self deprecation as a human. At one point, he admits that he had wished to
become an insect many times (709). Imagery of pests and vermin continues later on when the
Underground Man writes about his propensity for dwelling on the past. He compares himself to
a mouse, who retreats to a hole each night to go over the day s shortcomings. The forty year old
narrator says of the mouse: For forty years on end it will recall its insult down to the last, most
shameful detail; and each time it will add more shameful details of its own, spitefully teasing and
irritating itself with its own fantasy (712). The section continues like this for a considerable
length. The significance of the passage lies in that not only does the Underground Man compare
himself to a mouse, but it is a shame filled mouse that dwells on the past, twisting the truth just as
he does in his writings. The psychological root of this shame is defined by the Underground Man
on page 709, where he writes, I swear to you, gentlemen, that being overly conscious is a disease, a

With ash covering the land, cannibal groups roaming and freezing temperatures, a father and son

What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Internal Hiring
Firstly, internal hiring can be better explained in the situation where an employer carries out
staff s assessment to find out if among his or her current staff there is one or a few who are
adequately qualified or skilled to take on the job vacancies that need to be occupied. When a
company or a firm decides to engage in internal hiring, a current member of staff may be
reallocated new roles by being offered an internal transfer or a promotion. An internal promotion
is a process where an employer recognizes by identification of staffs that display high potential
and are performing better than others (Bauer Bender, 2004 p. 273). Ideally, job vacancies that
are filled using internal promotions are never made public hence other staffs don t get an
opportunity to make applications. Strategies of internal hiring are used when firms choose to
give their employees promotions in the firm to take up vacancies positions or even new position
in the organization. A good number of organizations even make the employees aware on a
possible vacancy in the organization by use of fliers, emails, or notice boards. This form of hiring
helps the organization retain employees who are talented with anticipation of future job
promotions. Internal hiring has both advantages and disadvantages as discussed below
(Fernandez, Abraham, 2011). Internal hiring has a considerable lower expenses and costs to an
organization as compared the long and expensive process of looking for new employees to be

In my own opinion, Dan Savage holds the characteristic of brave. He shows bravery when he

Now, your opinion may be different from mine, and you may not think that Dan could be described

Post-Course Views On Domestic Violence Post course Views of Domestic Violence Domestic Violence Lecture module 2 states, Domestic violence is physical, sexual, psychological or financial violence that takes place within an intimate or family type relationship and that forms a pattern of coercive and controlling behavior. Domestic violence may include a range of abusive behaviors, not all of which are in themselves inherently violent . My definition is very similar to this definition because it hits the points of physical, sexual, and psychological violence also. Another similarity is the controlling and power behavior in a relationship within a home. Although, a difference is this definition says, Domestic violence may include a range of abusive behaviors, not all of which are in themselves inherently violent , and my first definition it was a constant factor with frequency of abuse. Taryn Simon Research Paper Taryn Simon is a photographer who was shot down by Walt Disney because he believes that photography shuts down the fantasy that guests are expected to uphold while visiting his theme parks. He went on the say that what is in the parks allow the guests to fantasize and escape reality. I suppose somehow a real image takes away the instinct mentally to create one s own. I feel that for business he has a point because Disneyland is supposed to mesmerize a person and take them on a journey that can not be taken anywhere else. If that image were to change to the public, it would not be as popular or profitable. On the other hand, I do think photography can have that same effect on one s mind. Taryn states that she chose to look inward because she wanted to confront the boundaries of the citizen, self imposed and real, and comfort the divide between privileged and public access to... An example was a woman who had been raped and saw some similarities in a man while looking at photographs. Then in another photograph search the same picture of the man with similarities was present and by then she felt sure the rapist was him, only it wasn t. Each philosophy had its own set of rules of how people should act both in public and privately. The overall goal of each philosophy was to set a standard of acceptable living that would ensure harmony and success for the society. However, each was different and thus had different results. Legalism is a philosophy emphasizing strict obedience to the legal system. It was one of the main philosophic currents during the Warring States period and when it was most prominent. The school s most famous proponent and contributor, Han Fei believed that a ruler should use the following three tools to govern his subjects: law, method, and legitimacy. The law code must be clearly written and made public. All people under the ruler were equal before the law. Laws should reward those who obey them and punish accordingly those who dare to break them. Thus it is guaranteed that actions taken are systematically predictable. In addition, the system of law, not the ruler, ran the state, a statement of rule of law. If the law is successfully enforced, even a weak ruler will be strong. The neurological symptoms included headaches, mood alterations, insomnia, dizziness, and fatigue. Abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting were the gastrointestinal symptoms that people experienced. The CDC concluded that the side effects that people reported were mild and are common in the overall public. I disagree with the conclusion that aspartame is safe. Yes, it s true that nothing is considered 100 percent safe, but after 500 reports were received on the consumption of aspartame it s easy to concluded that aspartame is not safe. • 9. Sexual Connotation In Roland Barthes s The Death Of The... Roland Barthes essay the Death of the Author (1968) marks the transition from structuralism to poststructuralism , in which he celebrates the demise of the author as ushering in an era of joyous freedom (Barry 65) granted to the literary text and its reading. The text becomes an open ended and a polysemic discourse, and as such open to multiple meanings. He favours the essential verbal condition of literature , in which the role of the reader is that of something who holds together in a single field all the traces [intertextuality included] by which the written text is constituted (Leitch 1324 25). His poststructuralist perspective makes him see a text s unity lying not in its origin (an author), but its destination (a reader). In... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the process of occurrence of writing, Barthes sees, the reader as experiencing the intensities, the pleasure of the text, the erotics of reading texts that are always coming into being. Barthes equates the reading experience, so often, with a kind of orgasmic , thus, giving it hedonistic or say inherent sexual connotation . In his essays From Work to Text and Theory of the Text Barthes contrasts the traditional author based notion of The Work with The Text , and state that while a work can be held in the hand and seen on the shelves of libraries and bookshops, the text only exists when it is produced by the new reader . To him the Text is experienced only in an activity, in a production (Barthes cited in Allen 83). To Barthes, as has been pointed out, the text is a kind of woven or spun fabric seen as made up of quotations, references, and echoes . Never the less, this intertextual weave is potentially infinite in the sense that when we come to deal with the text we find it as if it has been something already written and the already said . The new reader of the text notices that the quotations a text is made of are anonymous, irrecoverable, and yet already read: they are quotations without quotation marks (Barthes cited in Allen ... • 17. Heterogeneous Ribonucleic Proteins ( Hnrnps ) Heterogeneous ribonucleic proteins (HNRNPs) are a family of RNA binding proteins that play a key role in various metabolic functions of RNA. There are roughly twenty major hnRNPs which are readily found in large quantities in the nucleus and in some cases in the cytoplasm. hnRNPs are expressed throughout all tissues at different levels depending on the hnRNP (Kamma et al. 1994). hnRNP metabolic roles include polyadanilation, shuttling mRNA out of the nuclear envelope, telomere biogenesis and localization. (Dreyfuss et al. 2002). In particular, hnRNP A1 can acts an an antagonist to the SF2/ASF protein, which allows A1 to inhibitor exon splicing and cytoplasm bound transport of mRNA. An example of localization is hnRNP A2, which confers the dendritic mRNA transport of various transcripts when induced by neuronal activity (Muslimov et al. 2002). Role of hnRNP A2/B1 Brain plasticity and learning such as BDNF driven long term synaptic potentiation rely partly on the shuttling and translation of dendritic mRNAs. Large messenger RNA binding proteins such as hnRNP A2/B1 carry inactive dendrite bound mRNA via the microtubule cytoskeleton where they will be translated when they are activated at the synapse (Leal et al. 2014). Brain derived neurotropic factor (BDNF) and increased neuronal activity has shown to regulate the distribution of A2/B1. Particularly an increase in BDNF rises the tendency of cytoplasmic and and dendritic localization. Some key protein transcripts carried by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Even more than that, however, I was interested to see what might happen to me as I get older, get married, and start having children. While I am young now, I am very eager to settle down and have a familyso I was very curious at the different themes that I would see when I interviewed a married women, who was Named Lucy . The themes that I did see in my research were inequality, a very traditional family dynamic (which I thought was caused by a gender trap), and family myths. The division of household labor in this family was very traditional, the mother, who I interviewed, was the one who did most, if not all, of the household labor along with working a full time job. That led me to believe that they had a very traditional family dynamic, even though that might not be the true ideology of the women I interviewed. I picked up on a few things while I was interviewing her that I think led to the traditional division of labor. I thought that they were very much caught in a gender trap, meaning that they think that they have to do what is typical for their gender. That meant that the childcare and the housework, which is seen as more of a feminine, were up to Lucy. The other things that were seen ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 24. Water Is The Most Important Substances On Earth Essay Introduction: Water is one of the most important substances on earth. Every single living organism on earth requires water. Whether it is a clownfish living in the ocean or a big shady maple tree getting its water from the earth, every organism needs it. Water is often times advertised as the most pure substance on earth, however this is often times untrue. Yes, water is a very pure substance but only when it is in its truly natural form, H2O. However, there are very few cases where water is in its truest chemical composition. Water almost always has some sort of chemical deposits in it, which can be measured in a hardness of the water. The hardness of water is usually measured in parts per million (ppm) of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) that is in a certain sample of water.1 In natural waters, the minerals that make up water aren t all in the form of CaCOВ¬3. The actual minerals that make up the hardness of water are magnesium cation and calcium cation, Mg2+ and Ca2+ respectively.1 Often times the calcium concentration is larger than magnesium concentration. This is due to the fact that calcium is usually in almost all types of rocks while magnesium is only found in a few for example, dolomite and olivine.1 These dissolved ions, Mg2+ and Ca2+, make up the main properties of water hardness. The hardness of water is determined on scaling range dealing with the concentration of the ions. Water is said to be hard if it contains a large concentrations of Ca2+ and Mg2+. On the ... The Mongol army swept across societies of Eurasia due to brutal violence, which allowed for their rapid spread of influence because of the fear that they established through destruction. Through the fear that came from the violence that Chinggis Khan was interested in, they were able to exterminate any enemies who stood in their way to force societies to gain their rule. The Mongols brutality became a key factor in the speed of their conquest when their enemies saw the violence occurring in a neighboring region or city, and they surrendered long before contact with the Mongols ever happened. The Mongols looked to create the expectation of coming violence; people surrendered to the Mongols sometimes purely on the basis of rumors; being psychologically incapable of fighting back even before the battle begun (Snapshot Reader, pg 24). That there shows that more was willing to go to extreme measures for his beliefs (pride). More s last words of comfort to his daughter, More: Margaret, You have long known the secrets of my heart. More is comforting his daughter with his last words and does not feel a single sense of guilt that he is leaving his daughter to live without the father she loves. Instead of apologizing for his choices he simply tells her that she was the only one that knew his heart. However, I know for a fact that Margaret did not know or want to live without her father. This type of violence includes behaviors and circumstances that threaten an employee s physical safety; such as: verbal threats, sexual or physical harassment, coercion, behavior changes, intimidation, stalking, telephone/email harassment, and history of aggression. Workplace violence incidents have tripled in the last decade, and it is now the fastest growing category of murder in the United States. It is also the second leading cause of death for women in the workplace (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2016). Both in the novel Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick and the film, The Mighty by Peter Chelsom portray the theme of friendship for which people can change people for the better or for the worse towards their future. In the novel, Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick, Max Kane is one of characters in the story that creates a bonding friendship with a small yet sharp witted kid named Kevin and furthermore a past relationship with both of their parents. Indeed, I think that the novel would portray this theme better because I believe they had a better bonding in the novel with the ornithopter (according to the description) than in the film with Max s learning disability. In fact, it shows throughout the endings of both mediums that they end with Max writing in the empty book Freak told him to for his Christmas present which I also think that is a major part throughout the novel and film that portray Max s care for Kevin very well. Woman and children were paid the lowest possible wages. It didn t matter if they worked more than their adult male counterparts. • 33. Theme Of Alienation In A Thousand Splendid Suns In A Thousand Splendid Suns, by Khaled Hosseini, and Master Harold ...and the boys, by Athol Fugard, alienation is definitely one of the most apparent themes because in both books the main characters are always told that they are different like when Mariam is called harami and when Sam and Willy are discriminated by Hally. In both of these texts, the main characters are alienated in a way that made them feel so different to the point where it affected their lives because they always felt like they are incapable. In A Thousand Splendid Suns, after Mariam was always called a harami, meaning bastard in Arabic, by Nana, she always thought that this small thing somehow made her incapable of going to school and other simple things in life. In Master Harold ...and the boys, Sam and Willie, mainly Sam, was always being discriminated by Hally. Due to this, Hally made Sam feel like he was incapable of doing certain things, like winning a dance competition. These examples of alienation and much more are evident in both texts and actually change the meaning of the story because it influences the way the characters act and live their lives. This depends on how the characters are treated, and what they are made to feel like they can not do. Starting off with A Thousand Splendid Suns, Mariam was always called a Harami by her mother. After constantly hearing this while growing up, Mariam thought that it was a big deal because that is the reason she is unable to live with or see ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Underground Man Analysis Dostoevsky s Underground Man is quite possibly the most interesting anti hero in all of literature. His unique worldview has both shocked and puzzled readers since the novella s publication. One of his key characteristics is his tendency towards paradox, especially concerning doubt, shame, and spitefulness. These paradoxes seem to reflect his era, of which he is often critical to the point of exhaustion. Other features of the Underground Man s psyche mirror the nineteenth century as well. For example, his anomie is a result of his life as a clerk in (then) modern Saint Petersburg. The Underground Man s true self may be shrouded by mystery, but it is clear that he is either telling us that he lives in all of us through our experiences with alienation, or that if we were anywhere near as self aware as he is, we would live underground as well. One of the most apparent themes in Notes from Undergroundis shame. The famous opening lines, I am a sick man.... I am a spiteful man. I am a most unpleasant man. set the tone for the rest of the book (707). These are clearly not the words of a person who holds themselves in very high regard. The Underground Man s shame goes beyond self deprecation as a human. At one point, he admits that he had wished to become an insect many times (709). Imagery of pests and vermin continues later on when the Underground Man writes about his propensity for dwelling on the past. He compares himself to a mouse, who retreats to a hole each night to go over the day s shortcomings. The forty year old narrator says of the mouse: For forty years on end it will recall its insult down to the last, most shameful detail; and each time it will add more shameful details of its own, spitefully teasing and irritating itself with its own fantasy (712). The section continues like this for a considerable length. The significance of the passage lies in that not only does the Underground Man compare himself to a mouse, but it is a shame filled mouse that dwells on the past, twisting the truth just as he does in his writings. The psychological root of this shame is defined by the Underground Man on page 709, where he writes, I swear to you, gentlemen, that being overly conscious is a disease, a ... • 37. What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Internal Hiring Firstly, internal hiring can be better explained in the situation where an employer carries out staff s assessment to find out if among his or her current staff there is one or a few who are adequately qualified or skilled to take on the job vacancies that need to be occupied. When a company or a firm decides to engage in internal hiring, a current member of staff may be reallocated new roles by being offered an internal transfer or a promotion. An internal promotion is a process where an employer recognizes by identification of staffs that display high potential and are performing better than others (Bauer Bender, 2004 p. 273). Ideally, job vacancies that are filled using internal promotions are never made public hence other staffs don t get an opportunity to make applications. Strategies of internal hiring are used when firms choose to give their employees promotions in the firm to take up vacancies positions or even new position in the organization. A good number of organizations even make the employees aware on a possible vacancy in the organization by use of fliers, emails, or notice boards. This form of hiring helps the organization retain employees who are talented with anticipation of future job promotions. Internal hiring has both advantages and disadvantages as discussed below (Fernandez, Abraham, 2011). Internal hiring has a considerable lower expenses and costs to an organization as compared the long and expensive process of looking for new employees to be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
