Virginia Tech Personal Statement
Virginia Tech has been the home for both my brothers through their mechanical engineer degree
and their transformation into responsible and hardworking young adults. I am the third of my
family to attend Virginia Tech and even before I was accepted the campus already felt like a
second home to me. I know the campus extremely well due to the many visits made and the rural
location is quite calming and therapeutic when overwhelmed with stress. The distance from my
home puts my mind at ease due to the fact that I always have an opportunity to return home if any
major problems arise at home. The entire environment given to me by attending Virginia Tech
allows a tranquil learning experience where I will be able to complete my short term goal of

Being a Veterinarian has been a long term goal of mine for 3 years now, and throughout my
highschool experience I have been continuously researching all the various aspects of said
career. I know that the department maintains livestock herds and flocks for research and
teaching purposes. This knowledge and opportunity guarantees that I will be able to accomplish
another short term goal, which is to understand more about large or livestock animals. The only
exposures I have been able to experience to animals are small animals at the local vet. I have
worked with large animals sparsely and have not had the best experience. As of now I plan to
become a small animal veterinarian, but I classes such as sheep management and horse production
may change my mind or change my perspective on working with large animals. I do not desire to
commit to small animal science completely until I have truly understood what working with larger

Rise Of The Texas Republican Party
Rise of the Texas Republican Party
For decades, the state of Texas was Democratic and then suddenly in 1998 the state flipped to
Republican. Currently, Texas is the boldest Republican state in the country. For so long it was
Democrat and strongly so but it has been Republican now since the nineties. The big question
surrounding this topic is what happened to make it flip suddenly? Well, research provided a very
strong answer that I didn t expect to find. In 1988 two people were voted in that changed everything
for Republicans; Kent Hance and Judge Thomas Phillips were the first republicans voted in since
the Reconstruction. This kick started a Republican makeover of the state that all through the
nineties Texans saw Republicans overtaking Democrats in every area. To understand how this went
down in the nineties there must be an examination of the past. The Democratic party was the face of
Texas for a century until the Republicans came back stronger than ever.
First and foremost, Texas was not colonized by British settlers. This has always made it stand out
as a fiercely independent territory then later a state. The individuals who shaped and formed
Texas did so in such a way to hold tightly onto its fierce independence. This fierce independence
was fueled throughout the first several decades of Texas existence due to invading foreign armies
and the daily struggles of just surviving in the Wild West. Because of this, the people of Texas
developed strong work ethics and a

Teeth Synthesis Essay
Teeth are the hardest substances in the human body and help us in everyday life. They aid in our
speech, eating and also give shape in our face and mouth (Taylor, 2014). Without teeth, we would
have to eat foods that didn t require chewing, and learn to speak without some of the common
sounds and letters in the alphabet. However, our everyday activities such as eating and drinking can
damage our teeth. Foods and drinks with a high acid or sugar content can lead to damage and a
slow break down the protective enamel surrounding your teeth. (Serio, 2010). There are several
different parts to a tooth. The enamel, which is the outer covering, protects the tooth. It is the
hardest substance in the human body, and is non porous. It is made mostly of calcium phosphate
and is irreplaceable due to being made of a non living mineral. (WebMD, 2013)Underneath the
enamel is the dentin. Unlike the enamel, dentin is made of living cells. Dentin is a tough layer of...

Brushing and flossing your teeth twice a day can help prevent any number of diseases. One of
the most common problems are oral cavities. A cavity is a hole on a tooth which is decaying.
(Foundation, 2014) This happens when bacteria or plaque stick to teeth. If teeth aren t cleaned
by brushing and flossing daily, the sugars from foods and drinks feed the bacteria who in return
create acid which rots away the enamel on the tooth. If a cavity isn t taken care of quickly, the
infection can spread past the enamel and into the dentin and delicate pulp. This can be very
painful and can result in damage to the nerves, or even loss of a tooth. In serious cases, the
infection can spread into the jaw bone and gums which may require surgery. Most cavities occur
in between two teeth, where it s more difficult for the bristles of a tooth brush to reach (Serio,
2010). This is why it is important to floss as well as brush

Internet Addiction Disorder
Internet Addiction Disorder Computer and the Internet become useful tools in every day life.
People are able to work on line, chat, play games, or do their businesses. Although Internet brings
many advantages it also carry a variety of dangers, including the possibility of addiction.
Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD) is a new kind of addiction, which manifests itself in an excessive
computer use that usually collides with person s daily life.
The fundamental problem of IAD is not a computer. Person is not addicted to the machine but to the
emotional states that arise as a result of his/her own activities accomplished by the computer and

Dr. Kimberly Young, who is one of the first people working on research on IAD, writes that Internet
addiction can be defined, as an impulse control disorder, yet does not cause intoxication. She
created the Internet Addiction Diagnostic Questionnaire (IADQ) to diagnose this disorder. Internet
addiction has a significant impact on the deterioration in the following areas of human functioning:
social, professional and psychological. Dr. Young specify the criteria of which five have to be met
before someone is consider an addict.
Questions diagnosing these criteria are:
Do you feel preoccupied with the Internet (think about previous or subsequent stays in the network)?
Do you feel the need to use the Internet for longer periods of time?
Have you had many unsuccessful attempts to control the time limit or stop Internet use?
Did you feel restless, moody, irritated, depressed when you tried to reduce their time on the Internet
or stop using it?
Do you stay online longer than originally planned?
Do you risk losing important relationships, work, career or study because of the internet?

Defender Of The Faith And Good Country People Summary
In Defender of the Faith and Good Country People , the problem of identity is key to the story,
for it is something that can be pondered over or quickly answered. In Defender of the Faith ,
Marx is seen struggling to identify himself by his actions, his religion, and his duty. In Good
Country People , Pointer is quickly identified as a good country person yet this perception isn t
accurate. Identity can be formed through a number of things, like family, friends, school, religion,
and etc. This is basic sociology, yet there is more to this simple list. It is the individual that
chooses to be influenced. An individual chooses who he or she interact with, one may say an
individual can t choose his or her biological parents, however, an individual can choose who to
call mom and dad. One can even argue that an individual can be identified by the choices he or
she have turned down. There are many influences to form an identity, yet it is the individual who
ultimately forms his or her identity based on the influences he or she chose. Marx is seen
struggling with his identity in Defender of the Faith , for he has allowed himself to be identified
by his duty, but Grossbart helped Marx rediscover a part of him that he lost during the war. By no
means was Grossbart intending to help Marx, Grossbart was only interested in his own self gain,
but this didn t stop Marx to let his Jewishness out. Grossbart invited Marx to mass one evening and

This, however, created chaos in other public programs for instance, Medicare and Social
Security. Reagan was fairly laissez faire and delivered on his promise to decrease government
intervention by reducing federal regulations on business and industry, a policy preferably known
as deregulation which had begun under Carter s presidency (Newman and Schmalbach 650).
Nevertheless, Reagan opposed labor unions he once fired thousands of striking air traffics who
were against their contracts and many businesses followed suit by taking strict measures against
striking. As a result, labor union membership and striking drastically decreased as the economy
grew tough during the Recession of 1982, and foreign competition for American jobs made jobs
insecure and negatively affected worker s wages (Newman and Schmalbach). In 1982,
investments and banks failed leading in a recession; the worst recession since the 1930 s during
the Great Depression. Unemployment skyrocketed to 11 percent as compared to the usual
unemployment rate which is normally 8 percent or under. Fortunately enough, a fall in oil prices
prevented the double digit inflation rate similar to that of the late 1970 s by lowering it to 4
percent. The policies of Reaganomics , mainly centered around cutting government spending and
tax cuts, are what improved and

Complexity Of Cult
To understand the complexity of a cult a person must first understand the meaning of what that
word truly defines. In a dictionary, you would find the meaning of the word as the system of
religious worship or ritual. But if you take this definition literally then a Christian would be
insulted. Just because a person follows Godor a god does not mean they are in a cult. Nevertheless,
the word cult has few different meanings. The structure of a cult has varied differences but the goal
is the same. AS a Christian, I disagree with the term in most dictionaries. Christians describe with

The Gap Between The Rich And Poor Essay
I was born and brought up in Nairobi, Kenya. Demographically, my family was typically part of
Kenya s urban poor. As a young boy, I was constantly confronted by the realities and debilitating
impact of poverty. At the age of twelve, I was transferred from a Nairobi based primary school to a
boarding primary school in rural Kenyawhere I eventually excelled and emerged the best in the
district during national examinations, earning me admission to one of the best high schools in the
country.
While in high school, I not only developed my leadership skills as a school prefect and a deputy
school captain but also discovered new talent as I went on to become a national champion in
national operatic music competitions. Talent and education opened up my eyes to a world of
possibilities and opportunities beyond my imagination.
Nonetheless, the reality of the gap between the rich and poor remained stark in darker shades of
black and lighter shades of white. To me, the root and the problem of povertywas no longer
shrouded in a gray shroud of mystery. It dawned on me that education a necessary condition to
the emancipation of the poor from the shackles of hopeless travail. It was through education that,
for the first time, options were laid out in front of me. I could choose a different future for myself
and my future offspring. I could fathom a flat world, one that presented equal opportunity to all,
regardless of tribe, gender or social background. I could choose to be part of the

The Role Of Xenia In The Odyssey
Xenia, a ancient greek concept of hospitality, was an important aspect in The Odyssey. The main
character Odysseus relies on Xenia when he gets back to Ithaca. It seemed wrong to send any
stranger packing even one arriving in worse shape than you (Homer 14.64 65). Almost everyone
in the past lived by this principle. They would feed them, bath them, house them, and treat them as
if they were related. As time shifts on society change as well as people change. People now
would never let strangers into their house or anywhere remotely on it. It would seem incongruous
if a person let a stranger into their house. It may seem like an odd thing these days It is the

Ardennes Offensive Advantages And Disadvantages
The Allies faced various disadvantages during the Ardennes Offensive: пѓ Since the Allies had
reached the German border after the Normandy landings by this time, they faced an important
intelligence disadvantage. The Germans used only telephones and tele printers within the German
borders. Radios were not used as the Allies had cracked Enigma by then. пѓ The Allied aircraft
reconnaissance suffered due to the autumn fog and withheld them from making optimum use of air
power especially the tank busting Typhoons of the RAF or Mustang fighters from the USAAF
which would have been used against German tanks. Though the weather was typical for the
Ardennes in winter, the ground was hard enough for military vehicles to cross and this suited the
armored attack Hitler envisaged. пѓ Germans used charcoal instead of wood to reduce smoke
detection. The Battle of Bulge Military Situation maps: 16th December 1944 On the morning of
16th December, the Germans launched an attack on the Allied forces through the Ardennes. The
plan for Dietrich s 6th Army was for the three infantry divisions to punch a hole on either side of

A Brief Note On The 1920s And Wwi The Industry
Between 1890s and WWI the industry undergone some big changes. Business grew into new,
giant dimensions, which caused change of mindsets of managements, and role of workers. At
the beginning of the century the industrial advancements yielded growth in automobile industry,
and by 1925 Ford produced a new car each 10 seconds, using assembly lines process. Years of
1882 to 1903 brought growth of financial trusts, and through merges and consolidations many
small businesses were crushed, and replaced by giant corporations such as Rockefeller s
Standard Oil, tobacco, Copper, to name a few, but also gave a rise to importance to use of
laboratories. Improvements of processes in manufacturing were so efficient, that numbers of
workers has declined significantly. Two reforms were passed around this time by mechanical
engineer Frederick W. Taylor, and they pushed responsibility of job education onto the
management, as well as setting some standards and procedures and best working conditions. Jim
Crows segregation brought on a rise in racial crime, whites killing blacks by dozens. In 1905, led
by Du Bois, the Niagara Movement promised blacks a lot of equal rights and justice, encouraging
mobs to riots and violence. Oswald G. Villard, W.E. Walling, and Mary Ovington called for civil
right organization National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), which
stood for rights of black people. As strikes became very prevelant, between 1915 and 1918, the

Examination of Clinical Psychology
Clinical psychology is a very important as well as popular part of the field of psychology that is
used very often. To begin, a definition of clinical psychology will be included. According to APA
(2009) Clinical psychology attempts to use the principles of psychology to better understand,
predict, and alleviate intellectual, emotional, biological, psychological, social, and behavioral
aspects of human functioning (Plante, 2011, p. 5). The following paper will first describe the
history and evolving nature of clinical psychology. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Psychology will always be an increasingly popular area of study, and will always be used to help
people identify mental issues he or she may be facing. Today, psychology is one of the most
popular undergraduate major in most colleges and universities, and clinical psychology is the
most popular specialty area within psychology (Plante, 2011). This field will continue to grow in
the future, as it has in the past. For instance, Money magazine and other publications have listed
clinical psychologists as one of the hottest jobs one can have (Plante, 2011, APA, 2009).
Psychology is such an interesting field, and such a useful field, that it will be around until the end
of time and will probably bring with it more insight and answers to questions that have yet to be
answered. The next item to be discussed is the role of research and statistics in clinical psychology.
Research and Statistics in Clinical PsychologyResearch plays a major role in the field of clinical
psychology. According to Plante (2011) Research is at the foundation of all clinical psychology
activities (p. 10). Since there is a huge demand from the public for the applications of psychology
to everyday life, research is in high demand as well (Thorne, 2000). This research has been in
demand because of difficulty applying the experimental methods to the study of individual cases,

Costa Rican Food
Costa Rican cuisine is known for being flavorful, yet fairly mild, with high reliance on fresh
fruit and vegetables. Rice and black beans are a staple of most traditional Costa Rican meals,
often served three times a day; gallo pinto, a breakfast dish of rice and beans mixed together
with onions and bell peppers, is often considered the Costa Rican national dish. For lunch, the
traditional meal is called a casado. It again consists of rice and beans served side by side instead of
mixed. There will usually be some type of meat (carne asada, fish, pork chop, or chicken) and a

Coffee is usually served at breakfast and during traditional coffee breaks in the afternoon, usually
around 3:00 pm. It has traditionally been brewed in a native Costa Rican drip brew device called
a chorreador. The traditional drinks for lunch are called refrescos naturales, or frescos or
naturales for short, and consist of liquefied fruits diluted in either water or milk and sweetened
to taste. They come in many varieties such as canteloupe, blackberry, strawberry, watermelon,
mango, tamarind, passion fruit, guanabana, cas, and lime. Another popular drink is known as a
granizado, a slush drink made of finely shaved ice and flavored syrup. The most popular flavor
is kola. This is not the cola usually associated with carbonated soda, but a fruity flavored syrup. It
is usually served with evaporated and/or condensed milk on top. The national liquor of Costa
Rica, guaro, is made from sugar cane. Costa Ricans often drink guaro as a shot or mixed with
juice or soda. The cost of guaro is very cheap compared to beer (cerveza) in Costa Rica which has
one major beer producer. Imperial is the most popular beer and is an American style lager that is
also available in Light. Pilsen is a Bohemian style Pilsner produced in Costa Rica. During the 2007
holiday season, a 6.0 version with higher alcohol content was produced. Due to its popularity,
production of Pilsen 6.0 was continued through mid 2008. At that point, it was replaced with Pilsen

Laurence Binyon Poem
Throughout many literary text the themes of courage and sacrifice are commonly displayed.
Laurence Binyon s poem is one great example that demonstrates this as he writes in dedication to
the fallen from World War One. Through a respectful and constantly calm tone he focuses his
writing on the remarkable sacrifices made by soldiers as well as writes to express the idealistic
point of view towards war many people had including himself. The authors image of the soldier s
death is being reflected in the poem as They fell with their faces to the foe . This line adds an
alliteration effect explaining that the soldiers fell in harsh and abrupt ways, as well as granting
the reader a pure image of what war was really like. The repetition of the f s adds an artistic style
to the poem and therefore it creates a line of text that is more entertaining and appealing to read.
The whole poem relates to the many soldiers who died during World War One and the third stanza
being the most well known and rehearsed in today s society; They shall grow not old, as we that
are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun
and in the morning, We will remember them. embodies the profound sense of respect, admiration
and grief that shapes the true meaning of remembrance. These lines are situated at the heart of the
poem as they are the most valued by the author and present an argument that the dead are
immortalised in the memory of the living.

Essay On The Enlightenment Era
The Enlightenment era, which spanned the end of the seventeenth century through the beginning of
the nineteenth, was characterized by the idea that everything in the universe could be discovered
and understood in a rational way. Enlightenment thinkers also began to reconsider and challenge the
church by thinking of religion as congruent with science and logic. Mid nineteenth century Europe
started to transition away from this culture of intellectual prosperity. As political and social focus
drifted toward industrial development, the divide between high culture and the middle class
became more distinct. These societal changes affected attitudes about morality, culture, the arts, and
science. For example, the discussion about evolutionand creation... Show more content on

Firstly, the age of the earth was still heavily debated at the time of publication. In the early
nineteenth century, people assumed that the earth was approximately six thousand years old.
Later, William Kelvin theorized that the earth was between twenty and four hundred million
years old. Because Darwin s theory depended on the earth being more than six thousand years
old, it was hard for many people to accept it as truth. Darwin was also criticized, like Lamarck,
for missing transitional fossils that would potentially prove the gradual evolution of a species.
Also like Lamarck, Darwin lacked a specific mechanism by which traits were inherited by
offspring. Unfortunately, he had not heard of Gregor Mendel s research on genetics. Darwin
speculated on pangenesis in which gemmules (tiny hereditary particles) were emitted from all cells
and were collected in the organism s reproductive organs (Darwin). However, critics said this theory
was too Lamarckian. Furthermore, Darwin s theory of natural selection was also criticized on
religious grounds. Although Origin of Species did not explicitly challenge God s creation of man,
critics were quick to read between the lines. Scientists agreed that it was possible everything
evolved from one common ancestor, but rejected the idea that evolution was the only way that
species could

Cognitive Developmental Stages Of Children
The well known cognitive developmental psychologist, Jean Piaget, proposed 4 different
cognitive stages of human development. Based on his examination and research on children,
Piaget determined that these four cognitive developmental stages were associated with the
achievement of particular milestones. The first stage of Piaget s cognitive developmental stage
is the Sensory Motor Stage. It occurs from birth to 2 years. The second one is the pre operational
Stage, which occurs in children aged around 2 to 7. The third stage is concrete operational stage,
which children are around age 7 to 11. The final stage is the formal operations stage, which
adolescents from the age around 11 to 16 or more. The purpose of this paper is to understand the
cognitive stage for children in different age, and how they perform and think logically in each
stage. In this paper, I did option 2 on the conservation of liquid task by using Piaget s concrete
operational stage and compare how children still in the pre operation stage performed differently.
The task was appropriate to compare the two children. My experiment is to test children s ability
to conserve liquid, and according to Piaget, children that have not entered the concrete operational
stage tend to fail to conserve liquid. People can easily see the differences of logical reasoning
between children in these two different stages. The concrete operational stage is Piaget s third stage
of children s cognitive development. In this stage,

Monoamine Theory
Monoamines are neurotransmitters that include serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, and
epinephrine. Numerous antidepressant drugs increase synaptic levels of serotonin, but they also
enhance the levels of the neurotransmitters, norepinephrine and dopamine. In the body there is
another monoamine called monoamine oxidase that has the effect of breaking down serotoninand
norepinephrine. Therefore, by blocking the effect of the monoamine oxidase, there is a increase of
synaptic concentrations of monoamines and te symptoms of depression are relieved. This
discovery led to the monoamine hypothesis of depression over 30 years ago, which proposes that
the underlying biological basis for depression is a deficiency of central noradrenergic and
serotonergic systems and that targeting this neuronal lesion with an antidepressant would tend to
restore normal function in depressed patients. A class of drugs known as monoamine oxidase
inhibitors (MAOI) have this effect. However, although helpful to many patients, the monoamine
theory of depression does t address othes issues such as why antidepressants can treat panic
disorders, OCD etc. and why enhacing monoamine concentrations isn t always effective in treating
depression. (1) (2)... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Setting Of A Story
Setting is defined as the context in which the play occurs in a play (Sweeney 20). Authors have
used descriptive or actual regions as setting for their plot and by doing so have demonstrated the
place, time and social environment in which the story is being told (Bernardo, Palumbo and
Sullivan 85). The setting of a story makes the readers gain a deeper insight on the true nature of the
characters through their converations, thoughts, emotions, and actions resulting in the development

readers understand and relate with them. The setting could be harsh or favourable making the

the readers and helping shift perception towards the author s intention of the story. This is mainly
because a story will have a protagonist and antagonist and their thoughts and actions reveal who

Self Defense In To Kill A Mockingbird
In this week s section section of To Kill A Mockingbird our mystery man who killed Mr. Robert
E. Lee Ewell is not valued. I think this because Atticus try the suspects in court for murder.
Instead of just appreciating that his kids are okay. For example in the text it says, It ll come
before county court...it was clear cut self defense, but I ll have to go to the office and hunt
up.(365) This proves the mystery man who killed Mr. Bob Ewell is not valued. This is because
Atticus tried to put the suspects on trial for self defense. The mystery man was just trying to help
Scout and Jem. So if Mr. Bob Ewell got killed in the process from self defense then maybe he
shouldn t have been beating up on them. Also Jem and Scout were trying to

Harley Davidson Core Competencies
According to Meyer (2017), a third component of Harley Davidson s intensive growth strategy is
market development, growing by establishing new operations in more countries by increasing its
supplier network to support global expansion and growth. The need to expand globally is fueled
by the company s financial situation. After peaking with $6.2 billion revenue in 2006, it declined
nearly 30 percent from 2007 and 2009 and was highly leveraged at debt to equity of 1.6. The
main concern is increase the operating margin to 25 percent (up from 16 percent) by controlling

Importance Of Reading And Writing
Reading and writing is very essential in one s lifetime. People always say they don t like reading
and they don t like writing because it s boring and they have no interest, but little do they know
they do it way more than they think. Everyday you re reading and writing, it might not be reading
from a book or writing an essay but you re doing it. Most of you re readingcomes from you reading
texts messages, reading comments and captions on social media, reading road signs, etc. Most of
your writing comes from typing those text messages and comments and captions. Without reading
and writing you will basically have the same mental capacity of a rock. You wouldn t be able to
get out the right pronunciation of words correctly and be able to understand thigs people are trying
to tell you or write out to you. Other than oxygen and water reading and writing is the most
essential part of a human s life.
As a young kid, I was always good at reading and writing. I always had some of the best hand
writing and I could always spell out words easily. Back then my mom would put me on different
learning mechanisms like children s books and Hooked on Phonics. Those tools it what helped
me to be the good speller, reader writer I am today. I used to showcase my talents in the annual
spelling bee s every year in elementary, I would never win but I would always come in second or
third only because I have a slight problem of just spelling words out word of mouth, but I can write

Indian Voting System Using Electronic Voting Machine
Indian Voting System using Electronic Voting Machine (EVM)
Introduction: Traditionally a voting machine has been defined by mechanism of the system to cast
votes and categorized by the location where the system calculates and show the votes. With
advances in technology EVM came into existence. This system in which citizens interact to cash
their ballets that is common parlance to electronic ballet marking system, when the voter makes
his or her choices, provides to verify their casted votes the mechanism used in this is DRE (Direct
Recording Electronic System). Primarily the EVM S are manufactured by BEL (Bharath

voting and thus has become more widespread. Retains all characteristic of voting while making it
more beneficial.
History of EVM: In India all the earlier elections is done by putting the stamp against candidate
name and folding the ballot paper and dropping into a box. This is time consuming process and
very much prone to errors until EVM came into existence, EVM s are manufactured in 1989 90

Ethical Responsibilities At The Termination Of Their Group
.54#2. What are your ethical responsibilities to group members at the termination of their group?
Explain As a group leader, I have a myriad of ethical responsibilities to the group members,
especially at the closing of the group. I need to exercise due diligence by using sound
professional judgement to make sure each of my clients have some form of closure before they
leave the group. In order to facilitate and prepare the group members for closure, I wantto address
three main points; I want to consolidate what they learned in the group, understand what they will
do with what they learned, and how will they continue receiving support. Each member should
share during this time. By consolidating what these men learned in this group, we will be able to
understand where each member stands. In this group, members should have learned how to deal
with their stress levels and find meaning in their diagnosis. Ethically, I needto recap during the last
sessions with the clients to remind them what they have learned so the group experience was not
for naught. Accordingly, I want to summarize with the group what they learned about the
challenges of being HIV positive while encouraging them to use the skills they learned in the group
outside of the group, while keeping the confidentiality of the group members. Accordingly with my
facilitation, the clients should explore and summarize for themselves what they learned and how
they have changed in the group over the past twelve weeks.

The Approaches Of Various Architects And Urban Planners...
Humanity has always been dictated by its cities, these congregations of people seemingly
organically creating the systems for how we live. However towards the end of the 19th century a
new monolith started to plague skylines across the developed world, changing the shape of cities
forever. Skyscrapers were indicative of a turning point in western civilisation, what was originally
planned to be a great leveller of society, allowing for cheaper land prices in cityareas, soon became
a vestige of the rich and powerful. I suggest that despite the evident need for this element of
verticality, and its success for select groups of society changes will need to be made to our
attitudes towards it within city planning if growth is to be fair,... Show more content on

These alternative modes of living are what have propelled development at an alarming and ever
increasing rate, through the discovery of organised agricultural methods during the Neolithic
Revolution (https://is.mendelu.cz/eknihovna/opory/zobraz_cast.pl?cast=71671) to the
implementation of the internet on a global scale, organically these solutions present themselves
within the hive mind of the city. While it s impossible to predict how society would have developed
without coming together in this way, it is clear that cities are a vital catalyst for change. (https:/
/monoskop.org/images/5/5a/Mumford_Lewis_The_Culture_of_Cities.pdf)
As well as understanding why we need cities, we must also analyse how they have developed in
the past if we are to theorise about their futures. However they have always developed in differing
ways, each is a product of its time, depending on the economic and social conditions of the period.
While this may make it seem more confusing to understand the development of individual cities, it
provides a broader explanation of what makes them so successful as a whole, they respond to the
needs of the day rather than follow any certain formula. In his work on the culture of cities Robert
Mumford suggests that cities are a product of time (MUMFORD), something that cannot be rushed,

Essay on How Challenging Is the Common Core Standards for...
The purpose of this study was to determine how challenging the common core standard really is for
our students by using lexiles to determine its complexity. They added the intra lexiles which is the
mean sentence length (msl) and the mean log word frequency (mlwf) to determine exactly how
difficult it may be.
Lexiles is a readability formula that was designed electronically to calculate a student s MSL and
MLWF. Using this formula they was able to make an assumption that if a student uses short
sentences and simple words they do not understand the material. Where as if a student who writes
longer sentences and uses bigger words understands the material very well. Students MSL and
MLWF was then added on a scale ranging from 0 to 2000, with ... Show more content on

Even though Elfrieda Hiebert didn t specifically state how she analysize her information you can
easily say that she used the analysis of variance route. In her study, she used a certain procedure
that added two components to the lexiles for each grade level and was able to give a broader scale
of difficulty on the text and she compared it to the scale that was already used by the CCSS to
show that there is a significant difference in level of difficulty when you factor in all components.
After reading her study, I find myself wanting to research more on how the CCSS is grading our
students on a scale that doesn t factor in all the components and sticking them on a scale that is
only predetermined by assumption. To assume that a student doesn t understand the material
simply because they wrote a short sentence baffles me. I also disagree with the fact that the
CCSS/ ELA do not allow any room for error. With no room for error they are expecting students
to be on point in regards to being at a certain level at a certain time. My understanding of this
allows me to believe the way the complexity is determined can allow for numerous of failures
because no child learns at the same and is on the same level at a given time.
If the CCSS is basically grading on the level of assumptions for the ELA are they doing the same
for the mathematics?

Netflix s top management team reviewed three options to transition into the online video
market. The first option featured a licensing agreement with cable providers, cable subscribers
could use the Netflix website for an additional fee to view movies on demand. The second option
would essentially integrate a streaming online feature into the Netflix s core offering. Finally,
an option would be building a stand alone online video business where customers would

its entrance into the VOD market using the third option as its approach. Although Netflix prides
itself on its customer personalization system, customers recently have been disappointed with

Neural Systems Controlling Emotions Have Influence On...
Research Objectives
The research completed by Shiv et al (2004), was to identify whether or not dysfunctions in neural
systems controlling emotions could influence and promote individual s gambling abilities.
Emotions can be either beneficial or detrimental to one s behaviour; it depends on what task is on
hand and the individual differences. As previous research in neuroscience has highlighted the
positive roles of emotions in everyday decision making, Shiv et al (2004) wanted to test out if
individuals with dysfunctional emotional reactions could actually make better decisions than
normal individuals. A specific scenario that brought curiosity to the researchers was how a patient
with ventromedial prefrontal damage, an area responsible for fear, responded accurately to
hazardous road conditions. Instead of becoming fearful and stepping on the breaks during icy roads,
this individual lacked fear so the patient assessed the situation and responded properly. This patient
with ventromedial prefrontal cortex damage handled the hazardous situation logically rather than
emotionally, allowed him to react properly. Shiv et al (2004) are specifically looking at how
dysfunctions in neural systems controlling emotions could affect gambling abilities. As normal
individuals usually display a myopic loss aversion, high levels of risk aversion towards gambling,
this study wants to detect if individuals with injuries with emotional brain circuitry systems would

and status links, each having their own criteria and way of connecting verses. Reverberation links
focus on linking the intensity of emotions and the tension found in the previous link, either through
a character or through scenery. Status links, however, are done by linking through socioeconomic

Korea had become trendy because it provided what the youth wanted throughout the region. The
phenomenon can be partially explained by noting how Korean popular culture catapulted forward
during the 1990s, leaving much of Asia behind as it abandoned conservatism and censorship,
diversifying, appropriating, absorbing and innovating. In its fusions, it created an Asian equivalent
of European and American pop. Japanese pop, of course, had long had this function throughout the

Prior to the incident, Cole mentioned, If I saw a Spirit Bear, I d kill it (18). Upon hearing Cole s
comment, Edwin responds, Whatever you do to the animals, you do to yourself... (18). Edwin s
counselling is in relation to the Spirit Bear incident, as Cole is disheartened by the dead baby
sparrows.
As Cole stared at the tiny bodies, sadness flooded through him. The sparrows were so frail,
helpless, and innocent. They hadn t deserved to die. Then again, what right did they have to live?
This haunted Cole. Did the birds insignificant little existences have any meaning at all? Or did his

Barbie Harris Interview
Barbie Harris is a 50 year old female who came into our shelter this morning looking for
assistance. In our initial intake and interview this writer can see that all Barbie has with her some
belongs: some clothing, blankets, hygiene products, and her prescriptions, which all fit into a
suitcase and backpack. Barbie states that most nights she tries to stay at one of her 3 close friends
house, however they have families so she does not stay long and interrupt their lives (Summers,
2012, p. 245). Other than those nights Barbie states she travels from shelter to shelter, at times
sleeping on the cold, hard ground. In discussing Barbie s employment history this writer learns she
has been unable to work due to issues with her mental health. Up until... Show more content on

This writer learns from Barbie that she has not been making appointments to refill all of her
medications. Furthermore, Barbie had not shown up for her last 2 mammograms, which is
extremely important within the first five years of remission from breast cancer (ASCO, 2001,
p. 9). This writer discussed with Barbie the importance of her health, reluctantly Barbie made an
appointment with her doctor in my office for Monday July 6. In addition, this writer discussed
with Barbie the possibility of accessing free counselling through Alberta Health Services,
something she could talk about with her doctor. Barbie admits to this writer that she is having
difficulty coping lately and some counselling may help. This writer discusses with Barbie that
she has been through so many difficulty life events: the death of her husband, both her parents,
surviving cancer, and losing her home. Therefore, having a difficult time coping is an
absolutely normal response to what she has experienced. Switching topics over to her interests:
Barbie tells this writer she actually does not mind picking up bottles and cans because she like
sorting things. This writer also learns from Barbie the she has an extreme eye for detail.
However, both things have not been able to land her a job, even though she used to work as a
mail sorter while she took care of her parent before her mental health issues began. Now Barbie
claims no one will hire me . This writer encourages Barbie to learn more about her current health
status when she meets her doctor, so that she will know what tools to acquire. This writer
discusses with Barbie how the Canadian Mental Health Association has many resources available
for people facing serious mental illness and those struggling with disabilities who would like to
work (CMHA, 2015, p. 1). It is a human right for men and women to have the freedom to work so

how technology has changed
Melissa Sandoval

How technology has changed Technology today, has allowed us to connect with people with ease,
and has made many tasks so much easier. From desktops to IPhones, the world we live in today
allows us to communicate with anybody with wireless access with just a couple clicks of a mouse.
As civilization has evolved so has technology, from letters to phone calls to email, basic
communication methods have consistently progressed into the complex system we have today. As
we become more dependent on technological communication, such improvements will continue to
be made. First of all, imagine attempting to live the way we do today, to the way we use to live a
decade ago. I remember having to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It seems hard these days to fathom the original size of computers and how small they have
become in the last ten years, but within the last five they have become even smaller and
somehow more powerful and faster than ever! For the past decade or so, technology has
transformed the way we communicate, the days are gone where we had to write letters and mail
them out and wait a week for our friends and family to receive them now, we can just email and
within seconds they receive our letters. Long distance phone calls are also unnecessary for anyone
with a computer, a webcam and a speedy internet connection is all you need now. Cell phones are
a huge advantage for us because we can now place calls to anyone in the world no matter where
we are at, we no longer have to wait until we get home or look for a phone booth to place
emergency phone calls. One of the disadvantages of all this technology we have is that it has made
our society somewhat impersonal. For instance, instead of communicating with my customers at
work over the phone, I can now just communicate with them through e mail or through instant
messaging. As a result, it is difficult to tell if one of my customers is upset. Technology also tends
to make communication drag out more than it has to, sometimes it s quicker to just get out of
your seat and walk to the person, or just simply pick up the phone. To conclude, I believe in
technology, and I completely support it but only to an extent. I say, go

Police Enforcement Agency Of Bangladesh Essay
Introduction:
The Bangladesh Police is the main law enforcement agency of Bangladesh. It is administered
under the Ministry of Home Affairs of the Government of Bangladesh. It plays a crucial role in
maintaining peace, and enforcement of law and order within Bangladesh. Though the police are
primarily concerned with the maintenance of law and order and security of persons and property
of individuals, it also plays a big role in the criminal justice system.
After decades of misuse and neglect, Bangladesh police is a source of instability and fear rather
than a key component of a democratic society. A friend asks another friend How many people
were there at the tea shop? He replies, Oh, only a few, just a couple of gentle men and a cop. You
must have heard this joke or one of its many variations. The implied hint is clear. There are obvious
reasons behind this common perception. But like all generalizations, these do not portray the whole
truth.
Abstract:
Police is one of the important law enforcing agencies to control the pace of crime and law and
order situation. Subordinate Police Officers are the key role players in this context. At present,
crime is increasing; the criminal justice system is cracking under heavy workload; society s
expectations from the police are high but the police s status and resources, working and living
conditions leave a lot to be desired. Moreover, the law enforcers are encountering some
humanitarian issues and limited facilities.

Importance of Individual Goals Essay
Using my social care work placement (Sense Scotland) as a reference, I have compiled a report
which fully covers effective team working in care settings. The report consists of a three part
structure, which documents: the factors which contribute to good team working, the importance of
interpersonal skills, and the contribution of performance review and goal setting to the success of
any organisation.
PART ONE: Individual, Team, or Group Methods of Working
Within my placement organisation, staff members will generally work as part of a team as well as
having an individual role. For the team to be efficient all members must know their own role within

This led to the development of Belbin s Self Perception Inventory which initially identified eight
distinct team roles (the ninth role of specialist was identified after the initial research). In 1981,
Belbin s Self Perception Inventory was included in his book Management Teams: Why they
succeed or fail . This inventory was derived from past versions. The 9 Belbin Team Roles are:
Completer/Finisher, Chairman/Co ordinator, Monitor/Evaluator, Implementer, Resource
Investigator, Plant, Shaper, Team worker, and Specialist.
Belbin believed individuals have a preferred team role, alongside a secondary team role which
would only show itself if the preferred team role was being played by another staff member or
there was a gap in the team in which a role was not being played. Belbin suggested therefore, that
the team role composition of a team may determine if it is successful or if it fails.
Bruce Tuckman, an educational psychologist described a simple, easy to understand theory of
group development in 1965. Tuckman argued that in order to function more effectively teams go
through a process of group formation. Initially, this was defined as having four distinct stages
although over a decade later a fifth stage was included. Tuckman explained that all groups will pass
through each stage of development before they can achieve maximum effectiveness, stating this
process may be subconscious. The five stages of group development Tuckman proposes are:

The Demand For Iphone Despite Competition From Samsung And...
The purpose of this paper is to show continued interest in the Apple iPhone despite competition
from Samsung and other competitors. The demand for iPhone 6s was record breaking according to
Apple (Apple. 2015).
Sales of the most recent iPhone 6s continue, but in certain situations have not been meeting
financial market expert projections. Investment firm Morgan Stanley implied the decline in sales
were due to higher prices in foreign markets due to fluctuations in currency values (CNET, 2016).
Trends from the past ten years have shown steadily declining sales for clothing. Teenagers are not

In early 2003, the dominant smartphone provider, Blackberry, was focused mostly on business with
its convergent device that included email, web browsing and text messaging (Zeigler, C. 2009). It

time.
The Apple iPhone released in 2007, was the first to feature an entirely functional web browser,

African American Coming of Age in Mississippi Essay
Coming of Age In Mississippi
The 1950 s and 1960 s remains the most controversial and momentous decades for the nation to this
day. The civil rights movement was to end racial segregation and end all prejudice against African
Americans. Whether it was voting rights, rights to sit wherever one liked, or to love someone
outside of one s race; racist people at this time were reluctant to have equality. These civil rights
movements challenged and demanded to be heard through protest and nonviolent activity. However,
these protests never were noted and were completely shut down by authorities and other racist
bystanders. Americans and their confidence in their way of ignorance was most certainly
challenged during this time; how could one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was challenging to ignore; these images circled the nation showing African Americanpeople who
were dignified and hopeful, dedicating their lives to shape destinies.
There were many tactics and strategies that were adopted by the civil rights movement. African
Americans would advocate for equality by sit ins, freedom rides, speeches/rallies, and with the
media. For example, there was a decision made by four North Carolina freshman to sit at the
lunch counter of a local restaurant to initiate a new phase of civil rights activity. This sit in was
called the Jackson Sit In and it caused an outbreak of new black college students from all areas
of the South to make a difference too. Among them was the author of Coming of Age in
Mississippi, Anne Moody. This protest was depicted as being horrific and dangerous to the young
lives of these college students. In Takin to the Streets, Anne Moody tells the Jackson Sit In in her
own words; We would like to be served here I said. The waitress started to repeat what she had said,
then stopped in the middle of the sentence. She turned the lights out behind the counter, and she
and the other waitress almost ran to the back of the store, deserting all their white customers. I
guess they thought that violence would start immediately after the whites at the counter realized
what was going on. (Page 18, Takin It To The Streets.) This quote in the third edition of the sixties
reader is significant because it perfectly

Nicholas Brothers Research Paper
The 20th century saw a shift in dance as new forms were created and artists began entertaining
audiences in new ways. The rise of Jazz music and the swing era allowed a couple of tap dancers,
commonly known as the Nicholas Brothers, to gain fame. The Nicholas Brothers questioned what
dance could be by pushing the human body to the limits the likes of which had not been seen
before. Other innovations in their dancesuch as their vernacular style, informal training, and unique
musicality directly opposed many of the virtues of classical ballet. Through my own interpretations
of their work as well as through the use of primary and secondary sources it is clear to see that the
Nicholas Brothers opposed classical ballet through their style, musicality,... Show more content on

One of the primary ways in which Tap, swing and jazz dance deviate completely from ballet are
how the styles organically developed into social dances. Ballet started as a social court dance
however at it s inception was segregated from it s roots as something purely performative. Jazz
dance forms on the other hand such as tap dance kept many of the swing vernaculars which
created them in their performance. That is to say that when watching a tap dancer perform on
stage (with a traditional deportment) and then watching a swing dancer in a dance hall, one can
see the similarities in movement qualities and even certain steps (such as the shim sham or
Attack Annies ). From this it can be argued that Tap dancers (as well as all vernacular jazz
dancers of the day) question what dance is by keeping its social roots alive even after it had
transitioned onto the stage. The fact that tap dance was a part of the vernacular dance of the day
(and still had a casual culture about it) allowed that the Nicholas Brothers to learn to dance
without ever taking a class (Frank 67). Where as a ballet dancer may spend long hours training at
the bar and in class Fayard Nicholas learned to tap dance purely through watching

Physical Barriers And The Immune System Defend The Body...
The world is full of bacteria and germs that is a fact. One of the many jobs our body has it to
protect us from harmful pathogens which is when our natural defense mechanisms kick in. Do we
know what these natural defense mechanisms are? Our body has an immune system and barriers
that play a part in preventing and/or battling the diseases attacking our body. Is there a difference
between the normal functions of the body and the response it triggers that provokes a defense
reaction?
Physical barriers and the Immune system defend the body against organisms that can cause
infection (Tunkel, 2015). The first line of defense is the physical and chemical barriers. Some
barriers include the skin, and urine flow. The skin being a primary barrier is

Cultural Diversity And A Multicultural Society
The United States is a multicultural society in which health professionals handle people from
various origins. Now the question is: How nurses meet diversified needs of human lives? Each day,
nurses make optimistic changes in human lives by providing care. This holistic care includes each
and every aspect of health. This includes, but isn t limited to physical, intellectual, emotional, and
significantly cultural dimensions. In order for nurses to provide transcultural care, they need to be
knowledgeable to understand significance of cultural diversity and take measures to provide culture
competent care.
Cultural diversity is a broad term that according to Lynn (2015), Culture, ethnicity, and race is an
integral component of both health and illness, (p. 74). The term culture which according to
Silvestri (2014) means, Dynamic network of knowledge, beliefs, patterns of behavior, ideas,
attitudes, values and norms that are unique to particular group of people (p.38). Furthermore,
ethnicity and race are exchangeable. A person belongs to certain ethnicity by birth or adoption.
Race is focused more towards physical characteristics of a person. In order for nurses must
understand the significance of these factors to provide culture sensitive care.
Culture has a great influence on individual s health and illness and it shapes various aspects of life.
These includes: response to pain, physiologic diversity, communication, nutrition, and family roles.

This ease of access and the fact you do not need a boat makes Lanzarote one of the best places

  • 2. Virginia Tech Personal Statement Virginia Tech has been the home for both my brothers through their mechanical engineer degree and their transformation into responsible and hardworking young adults. I am the third of my family to attend Virginia Tech and even before I was accepted the campus already felt like a second home to me. I know the campus extremely well due to the many visits made and the rural location is quite calming and therapeutic when overwhelmed with stress. The distance from my home puts my mind at ease due to the fact that I always have an opportunity to return home if any major problems arise at home. The entire environment given to me by attending Virginia Tech allows a tranquil learning experience where I will be able to complete my short term goal of rapidly adapting to collegelife and focus on pursuing my chosen major.... Being a Veterinarian has been a long term goal of mine for 3 years now, and throughout my highschool experience I have been continuously researching all the various aspects of said career. I know that the department maintains livestock herds and flocks for research and teaching purposes. This knowledge and opportunity guarantees that I will be able to accomplish another short term goal, which is to understand more about large or livestock animals. The only exposures I have been able to experience to animals are small animals at the local vet. I have worked with large animals sparsely and have not had the best experience. As of now I plan to become a small animal veterinarian, but I classes such as sheep management and horse production may change my mind or change my perspective on working with large animals. I do not desire to commit to small animal science completely until I have truly understood what working with larger animals in all its compartments is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Rise Of The Texas Republican Party Rise of the Texas Republican Party For decades, the state of Texas was Democratic and then suddenly in 1998 the state flipped to Republican. Currently, Texas is the boldest Republican state in the country. For so long it was Democrat and strongly so but it has been Republican now since the nineties. The big question surrounding this topic is what happened to make it flip suddenly? Well, research provided a very strong answer that I didn t expect to find. In 1988 two people were voted in that changed everything for Republicans; Kent Hance and Judge Thomas Phillips were the first republicans voted in since the Reconstruction. This kick started a Republican makeover of the state that all through the nineties Texans saw Republicans overtaking Democrats in every area. To understand how this went down in the nineties there must be an examination of the past. The Democratic party was the face of Texas for a century until the Republicans came back stronger than ever. First and foremost, Texas was not colonized by British settlers. This has always made it stand out as a fiercely independent territory then later a state. The individuals who shaped and formed Texas did so in such a way to hold tightly onto its fierce independence. This fierce independence was fueled throughout the first several decades of Texas existence due to invading foreign armies and the daily struggles of just surviving in the Wild West. Because of this, the people of Texas developed strong work ethics and a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Teeth Synthesis Essay Teeth are the hardest substances in the human body and help us in everyday life. They aid in our speech, eating and also give shape in our face and mouth (Taylor, 2014). Without teeth, we would have to eat foods that didn t require chewing, and learn to speak without some of the common sounds and letters in the alphabet. However, our everyday activities such as eating and drinking can damage our teeth. Foods and drinks with a high acid or sugar content can lead to damage and a slow break down the protective enamel surrounding your teeth. (Serio, 2010). There are several different parts to a tooth. The enamel, which is the outer covering, protects the tooth. It is the hardest substance in the human body, and is non porous. It is made mostly of calcium phosphate and is irreplaceable due to being made of a non living mineral. (WebMD, 2013)Underneath the enamel is the dentin. Unlike the enamel, dentin is made of living cells. Dentin is a tough layer of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Brushing and flossing your teeth twice a day can help prevent any number of diseases. One of the most common problems are oral cavities. A cavity is a hole on a tooth which is decaying. (Foundation, 2014) This happens when bacteria or plaque stick to teeth. If teeth aren t cleaned by brushing and flossing daily, the sugars from foods and drinks feed the bacteria who in return create acid which rots away the enamel on the tooth. If a cavity isn t taken care of quickly, the infection can spread past the enamel and into the dentin and delicate pulp. This can be very painful and can result in damage to the nerves, or even loss of a tooth. In serious cases, the infection can spread into the jaw bone and gums which may require surgery. Most cavities occur in between two teeth, where it s more difficult for the bristles of a tooth brush to reach (Serio, 2010). This is why it is important to floss as well as brush ... • 6. Defender Of The Faith And Good Country People Summary In Defender of the Faith and Good Country People , the problem of identity is key to the story, for it is something that can be pondered over or quickly answered. In Defender of the Faith , Marx is seen struggling to identify himself by his actions, his religion, and his duty. In Good Country People , Pointer is quickly identified as a good country person yet this perception isn t accurate. Identity can be formed through a number of things, like family, friends, school, religion, and etc. This is basic sociology, yet there is more to this simple list. It is the individual that chooses to be influenced. An individual chooses who he or she interact with, one may say an individual can t choose his or her biological parents, however, an individual can choose who to call mom and dad. One can even argue that an individual can be identified by the choices he or she have turned down. There are many influences to form an identity, yet it is the individual who ultimately forms his or her identity based on the influences he or she chose. Marx is seen struggling with his identity in Defender of the Faith , for he has allowed himself to be identified by his duty, but Grossbart helped Marx rediscover a part of him that he lost during the war. By no means was Grossbart intending to help Marx, Grossbart was only interested in his own self gain, but this didn t stop Marx to let his Jewishness out. Reagan was fairly laissez faire and delivered on his promise to decrease government intervention by reducing federal regulations on business and industry, a policy preferably known as deregulation which had begun under Carter s presidency (Newman and Schmalbach 650). Nevertheless, Reagan opposed labor unions he once fired thousands of striking air traffics who were against their contracts and many businesses followed suit by taking strict measures against striking. As a result, labor union membership and striking drastically decreased as the economy grew tough during the Recession of 1982, and foreign competition for American jobs made jobs insecure and negatively affected worker s wages (Newman and Schmalbach). In a dictionary, you would find the meaning of the word as the system of religious worship or ritual. But if you take this definition literally then a Christian would be insulted. Just because a person follows Godor a god does not mean they are in a cult. Nevertheless, the word cult has few different meanings. • 9. The Gap Between The Rich And Poor Essay I was born and brought up in Nairobi, Kenya. Demographically, my family was typically part of Kenya s urban poor. As a young boy, I was constantly confronted by the realities and debilitating impact of poverty. At the age of twelve, I was transferred from a Nairobi based primary school to a boarding primary school in rural Kenyawhere I eventually excelled and emerged the best in the district during national examinations, earning me admission to one of the best high schools in the country. While in high school, I not only developed my leadership skills as a school prefect and a deputy school captain but also discovered new talent as I went on to become a national champion in national operatic music competitions. Talent and education opened up my eyes to a world of possibilities and opportunities beyond my imagination. Nonetheless, the reality of the gap between the rich and poor remained stark in darker shades of black and lighter shades of white. To me, the root and the problem of povertywas no longer shrouded in a gray shroud of mystery. It dawned on me that education a necessary condition to the emancipation of the poor from the shackles of hopeless travail. It was through education that, for the first time, options were laid out in front of me. I could choose a different future for myself and my future offspring. I could fathom a flat world, one that presented equal opportunity to all, regardless of tribe, gender or social background. I could choose to be part of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The main character Odysseus relies on Xenia when he gets back to Ithaca. It seemed wrong to send any stranger packing even one arriving in worse shape than you (Homer 14.64 65). Almost everyone in the past lived by this principle. They would feed them, bath them, house them, and treat them as if they were related. As time shifts on society change as well as people change. • 11. Ardennes Offensive Advantages And Disadvantages The Allies faced various disadvantages during the Ardennes Offensive: пѓ Since the Allies had reached the German border after the Normandy landings by this time, they faced an important intelligence disadvantage. The Germans used only telephones and tele printers within the German borders. Radios were not used as the Allies had cracked Enigma by then. пѓ The Allied aircraft reconnaissance suffered due to the autumn fog and withheld them from making optimum use of air power especially the tank busting Typhoons of the RAF or Mustang fighters from the USAAF which would have been used against German tanks. Though the weather was typical for the Ardennes in winter, the ground was hard enough for military vehicles to cross and this suited the armored attack Hitler envisaged. пѓ Germans used charcoal instead of wood to reduce smoke detection. The Battle of Bulge Military Situation maps: 16th December 1944 On the morning of 16th December, the Germans launched an attack on the Allied forces through the Ardennes. • 12. A Brief Note On The 1920s And Wwi The Industry Between 1890s and WWI the industry undergone some big changes. Business grew into new, giant dimensions, which caused change of mindsets of managements, and role of workers. At the beginning of the century the industrial advancements yielded growth in automobile industry, and by 1925 Ford produced a new car each 10 seconds, using assembly lines process. Years of 1882 to 1903 brought growth of financial trusts, and through merges and consolidations many small businesses were crushed, and replaced by giant corporations such as Rockefeller s Standard Oil, tobacco, Copper, to name a few, but also gave a rise to importance to use of laboratories. Improvements of processes in manufacturing were so efficient, that numbers of workers has declined significantly. Two reforms were passed around this time by mechanical engineer Frederick W. Taylor, and they pushed responsibility of job education onto the management, as well as setting some standards and procedures and best working conditions. Jim Crows segregation brought on a rise in racial crime, whites killing blacks by dozens. In 1905, led by Du Bois, the Niagara Movement promised blacks a lot of equal rights and justice, encouraging mobs to riots and violence. Oswald G. Villard, W.E. Psychology is such an interesting field, and such a useful field, that it will be around until the end of time and will probably bring with it more insight and answers to questions that have yet to be answered. The next item to be discussed is the role of research and statistics in clinical psychology. Research and Statistics in Clinical PsychologyResearch plays a major role in the field of clinical psychology. According to Plante (2011) Research is at the foundation of all clinical psychology activities (p. 10). Since there is a huge demand from the public for the applications of psychology to everyday life, research is in high demand as well (Thorne, 2000). This research has been in demand because of difficulty applying the experimental methods to the study of individual cases, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Laurence Binyon Poem Throughout many literary text the themes of courage and sacrifice are commonly displayed. Laurence Binyon s poem is one great example that demonstrates this as he writes in dedication to the fallen from World War One. Through a respectful and constantly calm tone he focuses his writing on the remarkable sacrifices made by soldiers as well as writes to express the idealistic point of view towards war many people had including himself. The authors image of the soldier s death is being reflected in the poem as They fell with their faces to the foe . This line adds an alliteration effect explaining that the soldiers fell in harsh and abrupt ways, as well as granting the reader a pure image of what war was really like. The repetition of the f s adds an artistic style to the poem and therefore it creates a line of text that is more entertaining and appealing to read. The whole poem relates to the many soldiers who died during World War One and the third stanza being the most well known and rehearsed in today s society; They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them. embodies the profound sense of respect, admiration and grief that shapes the true meaning of remembrance. These lines are situated at the heart of the poem as they are the most valued by the author and present an argument that the dead are immortalised in the memory of the living. ... • 17. Essay On The Enlightenment Era The Enlightenment era, which spanned the end of the seventeenth century through the beginning of the nineteenth, was characterized by the idea that everything in the universe could be discovered and understood in a rational way. Enlightenment thinkers also began to reconsider and challenge the church by thinking of religion as congruent with science and logic. Mid nineteenth century Europe started to transition away from this culture of intellectual prosperity. As political and social focus drifted toward industrial development, the divide between high culture and the middle class became more distinct. These societal changes affected attitudes about morality, culture, the arts, and science. For example, the discussion about evolutionand creation... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Firstly, the age of the earth was still heavily debated at the time of publication. In the early nineteenth century, people assumed that the earth was approximately six thousand years old. Later, William Kelvin theorized that the earth was between twenty and four hundred million years old. Because Darwin s theory depended on the earth being more than six thousand years old, it was hard for many people to accept it as truth. Darwin was also criticized, like Lamarck, for missing transitional fossils that would potentially prove the gradual evolution of a species. Also like Lamarck, Darwin lacked a specific mechanism by which traits were inherited by offspring. Unfortunately, he had not heard of Gregor Mendel s research on genetics. Darwin speculated on pangenesis in which gemmules (tiny hereditary particles) were emitted from all cells and were collected in the organism s reproductive organs (Darwin). However, critics said this theory was too Lamarckian. Furthermore, Darwin s theory of natural selection was also criticized on religious grounds. Although Origin of Species did not explicitly challenge God s creation of man, critics were quick to read between the lines. Scientists agreed that it was possible everything evolved from one common ancestor, but rejected the idea that evolution was the only way that species could ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Based on his examination and research on children, Piaget determined that these four cognitive developmental stages were associated with the achievement of particular milestones. The first stage of Piaget s cognitive developmental stage is the Sensory Motor Stage. It occurs from birth to 2 years. The second one is the pre operational Stage, which occurs in children aged around 2 to 7. The third stage is concrete operational stage, which children are around age 7 to 11. The final stage is the formal operations stage, which adolescents from the age around 11 to 16 or more. The purpose of this paper is to understand the cognitive stage for children in different age, and how they perform and think logically in each stage. In this paper, I did option 2 on the conservation of liquid task by using Piaget s concrete operational stage and compare how children still in the pre operation stage performed differently. The task was appropriate to compare the two children. My experiment is to test children s ability to conserve liquid, and according to Piaget, children that have not entered the concrete operational stage tend to fail to conserve liquid. People can easily see the differences of logical reasoning between children in these two different stages. The concrete operational stage is Piaget s third stage of children s cognitive development. • 19. Monoamine Theory Monoamines are neurotransmitters that include serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine. Numerous antidepressant drugs increase synaptic levels of serotonin, but they also enhance the levels of the neurotransmitters, norepinephrine and dopamine. In the body there is another monoamine called monoamine oxidase that has the effect of breaking down serotoninand norepinephrine. Therefore, by blocking the effect of the monoamine oxidase, there is a increase of synaptic concentrations of monoamines and te symptoms of depression are relieved. This discovery led to the monoamine hypothesis of depression over 30 years ago, which proposes that the underlying biological basis for depression is a deficiency of central noradrenergic and serotonergic systems and that targeting this neuronal lesion with an antidepressant would tend to restore normal function in depressed patients. A class of drugs known as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI) have this effect. However, although helpful to many patients, the monoamine theory of depression does t address othes issues such as why antidepressants can treat panic disorders, OCD etc. and why enhacing monoamine concentrations isn t always effective in treating depression. • 21. The Setting Of A Story Setting is defined as the context in which the play occurs in a play (Sweeney 20). Authors have used descriptive or actual regions as setting for their plot and by doing so have demonstrated the place, time and social environment in which the story is being told (Bernardo, Palumbo and Sullivan 85). The setting of a story makes the readers gain a deeper insight on the true nature of the characters through their converations, thoughts, emotions, and actions resulting in the development of convincing characters. Hence, setting reveals the nature of characters in a prose that helps readers understand and relate with them. The setting could be harsh or favourable making the characters react to in in some way. The reaction is powerful in terms of evoking emotions among the readers and helping shift perception towards the author s intention of the story. This is mainly because a story will have a protagonist and antagonist and their thoughts and actions reveal who they are. This essay will show how the authors of three fiction, namely Alice s Adventure in Wonderland , The Birds , and The Walking Dead , 1 Days Gone Bye have used setting to disclose the nature of their characters. In order to facilitate and prepare the group members for closure, I wantto address three main points; I want to consolidate what they learned in the group, understand what they will do with what they learned, and how will they continue receiving support. Each member should share during this time. By consolidating what these men learned in this group, we will be able to understand where each member stands. In this group, members should have learned how to deal with their stress levels and find meaning in their diagnosis. Research Objectives The research completed by Shiv et al (2004), was to identify whether or not dysfunctions in neural systems controlling emotions could influence and promote individual s gambling abilities. Emotions can be either beneficial or detrimental to one s behaviour; it depends on what task is on hand and the individual differences. As previous research in neuroscience has highlighted the positive roles of emotions in everyday decision making, Shiv et al (2004) wanted to test out if individuals with dysfunctional emotional reactions could actually make better decisions than normal individuals. A specific scenario that brought curiosity to the researchers was how a patient with ventromedial prefrontal damage, an area responsible for fear, responded accurately to hazardous road conditions. Instead of becoming fearful and stepping on the breaks during icy roads, this individual lacked fear so the patient assessed the situation and responded properly. This patient with ventromedial prefrontal cortex damage handled the hazardous situation logically rather than emotionally, allowed him to react properly. The different kinds of links distinguished by Basho and his many disciples are the word links, context links and scent links. Scent links, however, are broken further down into two different types, reverberation and status links, each having their own criteria and way of connecting verses. It seems hard these days to fathom the original size of computers and how small they have become in the last ten years, but within the last five they have become even smaller and somehow more powerful and faster than ever! For the past decade or so, technology has transformed the way we communicate, the days are gone where we had to write letters and mail them out and wait a week for our friends and family to receive them now, we can just email and within seconds they receive our letters. Long distance phone calls are also unnecessary for anyone with a computer, a webcam and a speedy internet connection is all you need now. Cell phones are a huge advantage for us because we can now place calls to anyone in the world no matter where we are at, we no longer have to wait until we get home or look for a phone booth to place emergency phone calls. One of the disadvantages of all this technology we have is that it has made our society somewhat impersonal. For instance, instead of communicating with my customers at work over the phone, I can now just communicate with them through e mail or through instant messaging. As a result, it is difficult to tell if one of my customers is upset. Technology also tends to make communication drag out more than it has to, sometimes it s quicker to just get out of your seat and walk to the person, or just simply pick up the phone. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the primary ways in which Tap, swing and jazz dance deviate completely from ballet are how the styles organically developed into social dances. Ballet started as a social court dance however at it s inception was segregated from it s roots as something purely performative. Jazz dance forms on the other hand such as tap dance kept many of the swing vernaculars which created them in their performance. That is to say that when watching a tap dancer perform on stage (with a traditional deportment) and then watching a swing dancer in a dance hall, one can see the similarities in movement qualities and even certain steps (such as the shim sham or Attack Annies ). From this it can be argued that Tap dancers (as well as all vernacular jazz dancers of the day) question what dance is by keeping its social roots alive even after it had transitioned onto the stage. The fact that tap dance was a part of the vernacular dance of the day (and still had a casual culture about it) allowed that the Nicholas Brothers to learn to dance without ever taking a class (Frank 67).
