Hegemony Model Of Political Discourse
The next example worth looking at is another cartoon by Bengough entitled Renewing The Lease
(See Fig.2). The context of this cartoon was that though John A. Macdonald had resigned, he
launched a new campaigning in the 1878 election with his signature policy platform, the National
Policy , which was centred on Protectionism (e.g. tariffs on American manufacturing goods) the
completion of the CPR ( Scandals and Changes. Par. 24). In addition to scandals, elections also
provide an opportunity to discuss the influence the press has in politics, not as representatives of
popular political sentiments, but of private political ambitions. The political cartoon is a powerful
device in this situation as through its seemingly innocuous humour,... Show more content on

The background of this cartoon was that, despite the surmounting allegations of Ford s
inappropriate and potentially illegal activities, he maintained a considerably strong base of
supporters known as Ford Nation . Despite the size of Ford s political base, the cartoon attempts
to satirize them for their unwavering support. Indecently, the side of the cartoon they are placed
on could very well be interpreted as a subtle way of critiquing right wing populists as a whole.
With this in mind, the couple on the left (in both senses of the word) would then represent what
the cartoonist would propose to be the mainstream voting population. This cartoon would then be a
clear example of an incorporation resistance struggle between the two political communities where
the presumably dominant left (seen as rational and responsible voters) subsumes the subordinate
right into their political narrative by oversimplifying their ideological significance to an absurd
faction in Torontonian politics with an unreasonable allegiance to a corrupt yet celebrity like
mayor. Considering the central image of the billboard, the cartoon could also be taken to be a
critique of the legal system as the fact that Rob Ford has not been arrested for his illegal dealings.

Iran Essay
Iran and the IAEA s Earlier Attempts Following the discovery of the undeclared construction of a
large underground nuclear related facility in Natanz and the existence of highly enriched uranium
in 2002, the Iranian nuclear crisis began in full force. The following summer, the then director of
the IAEA, Mohamed ElBaradei, presented a report to the IAEA Board of Governors in which
failures and breaches of safeguards by Iran were cited without ambiguity and additional inspections
were recommended (Mousavin 66). Despite this, ElBaradei refused to say the Iran was in
noncompliance with its safeguards (Brown 174). This was of much disappointment to the U.S. and

for its harsh advances against Iran. In February 2006, Iran was referred to the S.C. by the IAEA
Board of Governors and in June, China, Russia and the U.S. joined the E3 to form the P5+1. In
response, Iran announced that they would resume uranium enrichment activities and end
implementation of the Additional Protocol ( Iran 1). Before advancing further, it is necessary to
analyze the events of 2003 2005 to understand the role of the IAEA during this period and why
such broad international assistance was needed to achieve the slightest of results. After receiving
the Board of Director s resolution of September 2003, Iran immediately questioned its authority as
it was outside of the Safeguards Agreements and Additional Protocol. Iran believed the resolution
and request for cooperation had no legal base and would be accepted not as an international
obligation but as a gesture of goodwill and a confidence building measure (Mousavin 74). It was
not until Iran was threatened with referral to the S.C. under Article XII, Paragraph C of the IAEA
statute that they began to comply. Iran was not prepared to handle the consequences of a referral,
which would threaten the country with isolation (Mousavin 76). In addition, suspicion of Iran had
spread from the Western countries to Russia, China, and its Middle Eastern neighbors. It was only

Designing A Possible Future Career Path
1. Introduction.
1.1 What Is Within This Report?
The purpose of this report is to explore the question Who Am I? Through this research study will
contain an overview of why interior design has been my intended choice to study and how it
could be a possible future career path. Also included will be a summary of both my skills and how
these will help within the future career alternative, and the skills needed to achieve this. Along
with this will be a review of the design discipline currently and what is intended for interior design
in the next five years, this will also cover designer s philosophy and a comparison between my
own and theirs. Furthermore, these findings will then lead me to conclude on what s yet to come
for the future of interior design is and how my design philosophy will be changed if necessary to
fit the needs of the future of design.
1.2 Research Methods
Using a wide range of research methods through this report to investigate and determine what my
future career option is. Image analysis will allow me to research into design companied that
coincide my own design philosophy. By using interviews to discover first hand more about the
future of interior design ad what it currently stands at from a professional standard. Also the use of
a foot traffic method to determine if other designer s philosophy is true through their actual designs.
As well as using secondary research such as the internet, books and newspaper articles will develop

Sodomy In Australia
Lesbianism was never punished in England or its colonies, but from 1788 1944 sodomy was
prosecuted; until 1899 it was by death, then life imprisonment thereafter. It s almost as if
homophobic men were in charge of lawmaking, but would get enjoyment out of seeing two
women kissing. So just because of that disgusting inequality, women were allowed to carry on
with their chosen same sex partners women s rights only matter when they benefit men it sees.
Yet until 1951 sodomy was considered a punishable, criminal act in New South Wales, 1951, that
s not long enough ago for Australia to be considered LGBT+ friendly, yet it s still considered one
of the more supportive countries. So imagine what it must be like to be LGBT+ in say, a third
world country. LGBT+... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Homosexuality, however, was still legally considered a mental disorder until 1973. That s far too
recent, that was not long enough ago for anyone to say that homophobia is a thing of the past!
The last gay man to be arrested for sodomy was put away for 8 months in 1984, that was only 33
years ago. Anti gay laws were only recently repealed between 1975 1997, the last start being
Tasmania, which was essentially forced to by the rest of the country to change its outdated ways.
Nineteen ninety bloody seven. People born in that year wouldn t even be 21 yet. We still do not
have same sex marriage in Australia. Same sex couples married overseas are recognised as
married in most of our states, excluding the Northern Territory and Western Australia which is
appalling, an absolute embarrassment to our country. You won t allow a couple in love to even be
considered married if they had to go to another country to be wed. You know what the Northern
Territory also refuses to allow? Same sex couples can t adopt the children that straight couples
couldn t look after, so

Person Centered Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy...
Carl Roger s believed that everyone is inherently good. Therefore, even the vilest of people would
be included. Some disputes have been made among behavior theorists that because the theory lacks
structure, it is not as effective in treating illness. However, it is one of the main theories utilized by
therapists today. Cognitive Behavioral Therapyis another popular theory that is used. It emphasizes
the present and fixing cognitive distortions that clients may have. However, it too received some
arguments against it, such as; treating symptoms and not the underlying cause of an illness. The
theories that will be discussed are Carl Roger s theory of Person Centered Therapy, Aaron Beck s

He also believed that the need for defense mechanisms stems from childhood (Rogers, 1962).
Children are taught conditional positive regard. When parents need to correct a child s
behavior, love is usually withheld. They are taught to hide faults and weaknesses rather than
accepting them. However, through unconditional positive regard individuals may know that
they are loved unconditionally. By acceptance I mean a warm regard for him as a person of
unconditional self worth of value no matter what his condition, his behavior, or his feelings
(Rogers, 1961). Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) addresses maladaptive thinking and
feelings in individuals. It was originally developed to treat depression and anxiety but is now
used for many different disorders. It is a very effective type of therapy because it is time limited.
The amount of sessions is usually between four and fourteen. CBT focuses on schemas or core
beliefs which are usually negative thoughts like I m worthless or I m not loveable (Beck, 1970).
In order to treat cognitive distortions the negative thoughts need to be addressed. First, the
individual needs to recognize idiosyncratic cognitions . Next, they will need to distance themselves
in order to be objective. Lastly, they may correct cognitive distortions and deficiencies by
identifying what type of faulty thinking they may engage in The different types of faulty thinking

Women Are Looking For A Man Of God
Think about this. When the battery in our car, goes it is drained, you call somebody at AAA to
come charge the battery, right? So why is it that we, as men of God, are not watchful enough to
see that our spiritual battery is low? Why don t we regularly recharge it? Maybe check yourself
into a hotel or something overnight and just lie on your face before God, listening.
Some of you may be in crucial situations right now. How much time have you spent before the
Lord, praying, reading and studying his Word to get yourself back on track? I ve learned that
women are looking for a man of God. They re looking for a man who can take her to another place
in life. That s what they are looking for. You know these women are very independent today....

How do you expect her to operate with you? We have to say, I m not asking for you to be like me,
I m just asking you to work with me. And so, again, if you don t give her anything to do, trust me,
she will find something.
And so that s why you always have to remain plugged in. You have to watch, and stand fast in the
faith. Don t you dare allow fear to consume your faith. You have to be willing to trust God, even
when you are at the point where you have more bills than you got money and you re trying to
figure out what you re going to do. The devil is always present when you are pressured . . . You
cannot allow the enemy to push you to do anything that is offensive to God that you know will take
you out of position with God.
The enemy wants to get you to a place where you will start working so many hours that you re
too tired to pray and can t spend time reading the word or studying scripture. Do you understand
me? When you have no time for yourself, you become an agitated individual. We already have an
angry streak in us. When you are tired, you will become even more flustered. And nobody wants
to be around you because of how you are carrying yourself. That s why you have to stand fast in
the faith. You ve got to believe God in the midst of everything.
Here s the thing: You cannot take this out of the loop. Because times are tough, you say, Ah, man,
I need some money. I ve got to work Sundays for the next 6 months. Rather than seeking God, we

Dress Codes In Schools
Should schools have a dress code? Harvard University recently put out an article talking about how
54% of schools in America have a strict dress code and the other 46% either don t or only have a
small dress code rule. Schools should have a dress code but it doesn t have to be very strict.
Schools having a dress code is necessary but some schools go a little overboard with dress code.
For example, the article Harvard recently put out addresses that dress codes are a must in most
schools but not a big deal in the rest of the schools. As another, Harvard also said, Dress codes
are important but some schools take it a little too far. This is important because schools should

The True Lesson Of 1984
1984 is a renowned dystopian novel that depicts an oppressive, dark English society where English
socialism is fervently adopted by the central government, also known as the Big Brother. However,
the fundamental notion of this political philosophy, which is to overcome the greed, waste,
competitiveness, and inequality as described in the article The True Lessons of 1984, are distorted
and trimmed down into three sacred principles: Newspeak, Doublethink and Mutability of the past.
The incidental appearance of totalitarian dictatorship that comes with such philosophy, on the other
hand, is almost inevitable, for socialism is an ideology that essentially is against the human nature
as well as repressing the instincts. In the article,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For the general public, on the other hand, there are also such treatments that are used to influence
people in the means of propaganda, espionage, and falsification. After letting Oceanian citizens
deny their own nature, the second step Big Brother takes, is to have them deny the existence of the
truth. Schlueter mentions, based upon Bacon, that Baconian science rests on the assumption that
reality conforms to the mind, not the mind to reality and remarks afterwards, This is not far from
the claim that the mind makes reality. To deny the reality, is to deny one s sanity and senses. How
many in total is two fingers plus two fingers? 3? 4? 5? As suggested by the Big Brother, it can be
whatever number one wants it to be as long as he thinks about it subjectively. People can create
anything in their mind with or without any factual information. As a result, doublethink and
mutability of the past are introduced. Since laws of nature are essentially unalterable, doublethink
manages to instill a sense of duality to it, making people believe its contradictory characters. In the
book, for example, O brien makes Winston, who have the scientific knowledge about gravity, to
believe that he is actually floating above the ground. Therefore, doublethink requires absolutely no
factual information whatsoever. Falsification of the past is the another mean that Big Brother uses
to distort the truth in people s mind by providing them with facts that have been

Literary Review of Sexuality and Gender in Science Fiction...
Literary Review
My argument is that SF literature offers a utopian hope for the future where individual differences
are no longer criticized. To conduct this literature review I used multiple information sources to
examine issues of gender and sexuality within science fiction literature. None of these sources
claim to have produced a conclusive work on the interpretation of gender and sexuality in SF. Some
of what I have read seems to be a general overview while some is more focused, but everything
clearly references other theorists, studies and texts to back up the arguments made.

In other words feminist SF is an effective and powerful means for feminist visionary
developments that are crucial for the initial attempts to embark on the cultural and social changes
that are the goals for the feminist political enterprise. Hollinger discusses Le Guin s view that
feminist SF doesn t prophecy the future but it refers to the world as it is. This is interesting
because it emphasises this idea that the SF can explore such issues of gender and sexuality in reality.
Hollinger references works such as The Female Man, Bloodchild , The Left Hand of Darkness and
Women on the Edge of Time together with people like Donna Harraway, Teresa de Lauretis and
Judith Butler. In addition to the well known feminist utopian works of the 70 s Hollinger also
mentions Helen O Loy, which is an early masculine focused novel. We see the importance of
feminist SF when we read about works such as this, because the contrast shows that some SF
writers obviously didn t identify the historical possibility and cultural traditionalism of our notions
regarding gender and sexual identity and the roles of men and women. Hollinger brings together
plenty of evidence to back up her points about feminist theory and SF making for a comprehensive
essay.

Flamingo Case Study
Student Description
Flamingo is a 6 year old, first grade male in a K 1 self contained class. In his class there are a
total of 7 students with 5 adults (teacher, 2 teaching assistants, and 2 1:1 aids). Overall, Flamingo
is a great student that always tries his best. Even though he tries his best, sometimes he is too hard
on himself as he strives for perfectionism.
Critical Learning Needs and Objective Flamingo has been diagnosed as having a speech and
language disability, and his parents refused to have him labeled as autistic, even though he has
difficulty with processing and focusing. Besides helping Flamingo stay on task, he needs 1:1
support as he completes his classwork. In regards to ELA, Flamingo is a strong reader, but has

When working with Flamingo, the graphic organizer allowed him to slow down, making him go
back into the text to find important details. This process had Flamingo rereading the text and
putting it into his own words. By doing this, Flamingo had a better understanding of what he was
reading. At first, it did seem that Flamingo had a hard time determining what details were important
and what details were just extra. However, after talking to him and walking through different
examples, Flamingo did start understanding the difference. Overall, this project was effective
because Flamingos reading comprehension improved. Next time, before giving Flamingo or another
student this intervention, I would first have a mini lesson on how to determine important details.
This could be done by teaching the students how to actively read their text by taking notes in the
margins or on post it notes. By doing this, hopefully the student will not feel overwhelmed by
completing this task. In the future, it will be important for Flamingo s teacher to continue this
intervention but to introduce new graphic organizers as well. Introducing different graphic
organizers will be important because they all have different purposes in regards to reading and
writing. Finding different and appropriate graphic organizers will allow Flamingo to be more
specific and accurate when he does his

African Americans
Who are we, where did we come from, what has been our experience since we landed on United
States soil? The migration of Africans has been very significant in the making of African Americans
history and culture. Today s 35 million African Americans are heirs to all the migrations that have
formed and transformed African America, the United States, and the Western Hemisphere (The New
York Public Library, n.d.). African Americanhistory starts in the 1500s with the first Africans

In 1831, northern free slaves began to try to free slaves from forced captivity of southern slave
owners, which began the movement of the Underground Railroad. In 1865, the victory of the
civil war, freed four million black slaves, but white southerners were not happy with the idea of
slaves having freedom so they designed laws to restrict freed slaves from civility and ensure that
they did not lose their labor force. As the years went on and new laws were passed for citizenship,
white southerners continued to come up with ways to restrict Blacks from many social activities in
which they were already granted through the laws of the Constitution.
By the 19th century, many social forms of discrimination existed to keep Black Americans from
being equal to White Americans. Laws like separate but equal where put into places to keep Black
Americans from being in the same places as White Americans, like; neighborhoods, schools,
churches, restaurants, and so on. White Americans also believed that Blacks should not have the
right to vote; which led to many black movements for the continuous fight for equality in the
nation of freedom. By 1954 the Brown vs. Board of Education case reversed the separate but equal
doctrine that previously had been set in 1896, allowing children both White and Black children to

Research Methodology For Research Methods Essay
Survey research methods are one of the most widely used research methods in education. This non
experimental, quantitative research design is most often used to gather information about the
subject s attitude, beliefs, opinions, or similar types of information (McMillian Schumacher, 2010).
With this method, the researcher selects a sample of subjects and either administers a questionnaire
or conducts interviews to collect data from the subjects.
There are several benefits to using surveys in educational research. First of all, the researcher can
gather information from a small group of subjects (the sample), but apply the results to a larger
number of people (the population). Additionally, many educational researchers choose survey
methods because of the versatility, efficiency and generalizability that surveys provide (Schutt,
1996). Surveys are versatile, because they have been used in many different areas of educational
research. They are also very cost efficient and, for the most part, do not require the time that most
other methods do. This makes them popular among researchers. As previously mentioned, the
researcher can gather data from a small group of subjects instead of the entire population, but
generalize the results to the population. This, in itself, is a huge benefit when sample
generalizability is a goal.
Important Considerations for Survey Research Design
Although survey research design is the most widely used in educational research, it is not the only

Torture In Medieval Prisons
The Veg Pledge Everything is pitch black. I am pressed up hard against my peers in this moving
enclosure and have been for what feels like a lifetime. I can hardly breathe and the heat is almost
unbearable. The stench of death is penetrating, filling me entirely. Suddenly, light pours from
outside blinding me, I am shoved and kicked by men, who maneuver me out of my previous
prison. I realise that I am free, and begin to run forward, only to collapse as my legs and lungs
cannot cope after standing for so long. I am herded into yet another dark and crowded enclosure
with my peers, my heart begins to race with panic, and I try to resist, squealing and thrashing
around. The cruel men from earlier reappear and poke me with what I assume is a stick, but it
sends shockwaves through me, rendering me unable to move. Little did I know that that would be
the last time I would move. Little did I know that my death could contribute to the destruction of a

we see ourselves as superior as they cannot speak English as we do, this is comparable to native

A Brief Note On The Veterans Centre ( Vc ) At Sunnybrook...
In the Veterans Centre (VC) at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre a standardized tool was
developed to assist nurses with the completion of their pre rounds documentation. However
compliance with the tool on one patient care unit is falling below the nurse manager s expectations.
Additionally, communication of the notes information by nurses during rounds is not reflecting
best practiceand critical thinking. The purpose of this paper is to outline a proposal that will aim at
improving these two aspects of professional nursing practice.
Introduction
On a biweekly basis, interprofessional team rounds are held on each unit to update the plan of care
and to discuss ways to optimize a resident s cognitive, physical, and psychosocial abilities. As the
individual who has the most interaction with the resident, nurses play a key role in communicating
to the team, the resident s overall health status. The template in Appendix A outlines the areas of
best practice that nurses are expected to be knowledgeable about with regards to their residents.
This template follows the Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation or SBAR
format, incorporates corporate best practices, and the care plan indicators from the Minimum Data
Set assessment tool. Likewise, the verbal communication of this information during rounds by the
nurses should employ aspects of best practice and critical thinking. Improvement in these two areas
has been identified and is the overall aim of this

Okonkwo s characterization in the opening of the novel reveals that men gained their fame by
personal achievement which then leads them to be considered as a successful man. Okonkwo is
portrayed as a honorable and well respected man. He did not let his father s characterization affect
him. Fortunately, among these people a man was judged according to his worth and not according
to the worth of his father (achebe8). Evidently, this shows that his value of manliness is very
important to him, being a successful man is an important role to him. Weakness and femininity
were the two characteristics that are vile to him, he tends to call out men with no tiles or
accomplishment, women. Okonkwo does not value manliness just because he desires to, but
because it also plays an important role in his culture. The men in the Igbo culture are the head of
the family, and the only person who has the authority to do anything they desire. Men with titles
and personal achievement were represented as successful men, because they demonstrated that they
were capable of being worthy and showed no weakness. In their culture women were seen as the

Relationship Between Bitter Flavors And Bitter Flavor
Abstract
The realization of this experiment had as main objective to show the relationship between the bitter
flavor in spinach and the bitter flavor in Phenylthiocarbamide (PTC). In many past studies about
this relationship the results have shown that there is a significant difference between the bitter taste
in some vegetables and the bitter flavor present in PTC (Sandell Breslin,2006). In order to
approve or disapprove this hypothesis 19 students in the same class were tested to see if they
tasted the bitter flavor in spinach. The spinach leaves were blended with mango juice using a
blender machine. The result of this part of the experiment were recorded in a table to be
analyzed. The results showed that 26.3% of the subjects were super tasters of the spinach
(indicating that they tasted the bitter flavor). In contrast about 73.7% of the same subjects were
considered to be super tasters for the PTC (grading the bitter flavor 4 or 5 in a 5 scale; being 5
the maximum for bitterness). In conclusion it can be say that this two results were not very related.
This experiment can be used to further analyze how some vegetables may have bitter flavor and
not be correlated to the bitter taste in PTC.
Introduction
PTC which stands for phenylthiocarbamide is a chemical compound that has been used as an
instrument to test taste sensitivity to bitter flavor (Kim Drayna, 2004). In the early 1930s a chemist

Fear In The Odyssey
The Hero s Journey, as defined by Joseph Campbell, is a set of stages a protagonist must undergo
to reinter into his known and normal world after facing many challenges. One specific challenge
the hero must face is described as the Supreme Ordeal, which is the moment the greatest fear is
confronted. In The Odyssey, Odysseus must killthe suitors who took over his household to reach
the next stage of his journey. As Odysseus slaughters the suitors in the hall of his home in Book
22, not only does he enter the Supreme Ordeal stage of the Hero s Journey to face his greatest
fear, but also is one phase closer to reintegrating with society. Joseph Campbell, an American
scholar, defined the Hero s Journey in twelve separate stages within two halves,... Show more

While earlier books in The Odyssey describe Odysseus fear in his own words, Book 22 is the
first incident in which his fear is physically both described and displayed. This display of fear is
further expressed when Athena as Mentor asks Odysseus, Where s it gone, Odysseus your
power, your fighting heart? (22.236) This question not only represents the great fear circulating
through the hero in the moment, but also symbolizes his hitting bottom. Athena, once greatly
praising the courage of Odysseus, hit new heights of rage (22.234) when he became overcome
with fear as more suitors and enemies gathered in the hall, waiting to kill him. Athena then goes
as far as to mock the fear that overcame Odysseus when she states now you ve returned to your
own house, your own wealth / bewail the loss of your combat strength in a war with suitors?
(22.242 243) This emphasis on suitors shows both their inner weakness and the disgust Athena
has towards them, giving Odysseus the advantage in the slaughter. This advantage is
demonstrated when six of the suitors attempt to attack Odysseus and his comrades with spears,
but Athena sent the whole salvo wide of the mark (22.269). Immediately after, Odysseus and his
comrades return the attack and successfully kill four of the opposing men. After another round of
slaughtering success, Odysseus begins to overcome the fear of the Supreme Ordeal. This fear is
not lost; however, for it is turned around and placed on the remaining suitors by Athena when she
terrifies the suitors out of their minds, and down the hall they panicked / wild, like herds

Giardia Strains
The overall complexity of the strains and assemblages of giardia makes researching and
understanding this species extremely challenging. In this case strains refer to Giardia agilis,
Giardia muris, and Giardia lamblia. To identify between the three main giardia strains (Giardia
agilis, Giardia muris, and Giardia lamblia) requires scientists to look at tiny structural details to
determine what specific strain they are dealing with (Feely and Erlandsen, 1985). For example:
Giardia agilis has a more elongated body in comparison to the other two strains (Feely and
Erlandsen, 1985). Giardia muris is increasingly difficult to distinguish from Giardia lamblia
therefore they typically observe its preferred host (Finch, Black, Labatiuk, Gyurek, Belosevic,...

the giardia cyst(s) is ingested into the human body and travels through the digestive tract and
reproduces in the small intestine (Adam, 1991; Gillin and Reiner, 1996). However, the estimated
number of giardia cysts needed to be ingested to result in diarrhea is 10 cysts and the symptoms
typically occur 6 to 15 days after initial ingestion, making it extremely difficult to determine the
form(s) of transfer mechanisms involved (Ankarklev et al., 2010). The time lapse is needed to
allow for cyst and trophozoite reproduction and growth (excystation) to overwhelm the body and
cause the diarrhea (Ankarklev et al., 2010). In addition, the host cannot become immune to the
giardia parasite and therefore infections can occur regardless of previous exposure (Adam,

Hiv Prevention Is A Preventable Disease
Today, as we must know HIV is still spreading around the world and neither a vaccine nor a cure
exists. The prevention of the disease remains the main key of the strategy to stop the epidemic. The
most common mode of HIV transmission is sexual contact; therefore, HIV prevention is closely
linked to the sexual and reproductive healthof men and women. Effective prevention programs
include interventions that promote sex abstinence, delay sexual initiation, maintain a mutually
faithful partner, limit sexual partners, use condoms consistently and correctly, and counsel and test
for HIV. The most effective combination of these interventions depends on the characteristics of
groups infected with HIV. Effective programs also consider the social,... Show more content on

Essay on Langston Hughes
Langston Hughes
Langston Hughes was one of the first black men to express the spirit of blues and jazz into words.
An African American Hughes became a well known poet, novelist, journalist, and playwright.
Because his father emigrated to Mexico and his mother was often away, Hughes was brought up in
Lawrence, Kansas, by his grandmother Mary Langston. Her second husband
(Hughes s grandfather) was a fierce abolitionist. She helped Hughes to see the cause of social
justice. As a lonely child Hughes turned to reading and writing, publishing his first poems while in
high school in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1921 he entered Columbia University, but left after an unhappy
year. Even as he worked as a delivery man, a messmate on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Hughes bought a house in Harlem, where he spent the rest of his life. Hughes still feared for the
future of urban blacks. His point of view became immense and included another book of poetry,
almost a dozen children s books, several opera libretti, four books translated from French and
Spanish, two collections of stories, another novel, a history of the NAACP and another volume of
autobiography, I Wonder As I Wander (1956). He also continued his work in the theater, pioneering
in the gospel musical play. Blues began in the south and slowly made its way into the great cities of
the North. As the great migration began people took what they knew in south to the north. This
included music. Langston Hughes living in Harlem was caught up in the new rhythm of music and
based many of his poems on it. As a boy he remembers hearing the blues perfomed in Kansas City.
Hughes was fascinated with black music, tried his hand at writing lyrics, and was taken with the
possibilities of performing music and poetry together 4 Besides having both a love of this music
and the common black folk it was created by and for, one of the reasons that Hughes began to draw
on the blues tradition for writing his poetry is that he hoped to capitalize on the blues craze.
5Though the markets for music and poetry were quite different, he thought he could

Process Essay About Becoming Dorothy Gale
The process to becoming a new character is one that many people do not get the chance to
experience. It starts with the makeup, applied in a dimly lit dressing room, surrounded by other
actors in the same position. Foundation put on so heavily that the face resembles a just painted
wall and lips stained for weeks after the final performance. Mascara applied thinly at first. Then,
darker and darker so that the people in the back can tell that your eyelashes are there. And in one
swift motion, much like the act of painting, a dollop of crimson red lines the cheekbone in a grand
finale. The makeup is what makes you appear different. It keeps the illusion alive. Becoming

I chuckle under my breath at the absurdity of me still having stage fright after all this time. My
heart hums to the sound of the audience s murmur and I sing under my breath, looking for the pitch
to Somewhere over the Rainbow when, suddenly, in what seemed like slow motion, the beat is
heard and I walk on stage, no longer myself. Reciting the lines is just the beginning of acting the
part. The emotion conveyed brings the character to life. Dorothy was not just a girl in a movie or a
book. She was living, breathing, growing. She was me, and I was her. This is how theatre was
meant to work. As the performance ended, the reality of what I was losing became very clear to
me. I said my last line, stood in my last position, and bowed together with the wonderful cast I got
to share my journey with. The lights dimmed, the music played in conclusion, and the curtains
closed slowly, signifying the end of a star performance. Once the black curtains hit each other, in a
final round of applause, the cast scattered in joy towards the meet and greet. All the while, hugs and
congratulations were dealt out like a hand of cards.
The happiness those around me felt was not reciprocated by, a now lonely, me. In one instant, I
had lost a part of myself that had grown in the last few months. Once the production ended, I
realized that Dorothy was gone. We were no longer each other. I sat in silence, mourning the loss
of a dear friend, before turning into the hallway to pretend one last

Alexander The Coliseum
The birth of a coliseum legend
Sweat trickled down his face, he was strong and lean, his long black hair was drenched in sweat.
He was tired and exhausted. He walked around his opponent, circling ready to attack. He tried his
best to ignore the stench of blood, but that was one feat he could not perform. He was almost out
of tricks, his opponent was a better swordsman. All around him the crowd cheered, he was
Alexander.
It all started out a few years ago before the king s men raided small villages, they were taken as
slaves. They were then sent to the coliseum as groups of slaves to fight for entertainment for Rome.

screams of the on looking audience in the coliseum. And among all the screams and cheers, you
could hear men and women alike cheering on alexander. The battle drew on, until it started to
become clear that Alexander would lose if he did not do something quickly.
Whilst fighting to his heart content on the ongoing attacks, alexander was thinking long and hard to

Stockholm Syndrome Theory
The Role of the Stockholm syndrome Theory in relation to attachment in Emotional Abuse:
Stockholm Syndrome is a paradoxical phenomenon that occurred on August 23, 1973 by a 32
year old career criminal Jan Erik Olsson and his partner. It occurred at the Svergis Kredit Bank,
Sweden where four employees were held hostage for 131 hours. According to Doyle (2002) it
became clear that during the siege, the hostages, despite being law abiding citizens, were more
afraid of the police than they were of their captors, and subsequently defended the robbers. In
kidnap and hostage situations, negotiators recognize that captives frequently develop positive
feelings towards their captors and show hostility towards any rescuers: Even in the face of an...

Those that show resistance often have a strong value system or an alternative model of behaviour to
which they cling tenaciously. Similarly, children who are subjected to mistreatment at the hands of
a newly arrived step parent, or who have other positive influences, may resist and complain because
they know there are alternative forms of parental behaviour (Doyle, 2002). Strenz (1980) noted that
the Stockholm syndrome is likely to be absent when captors showed no kindness towards their
victims. He states that those victims who had negative contacts with the subjects did not evidence
concern for them... some of these victims had been physically abused by the subjects. They
obviously did not like their abuse and advocated the maximum penalty be imposed (p.143).
Abusive children may not feel any loyalty and affection for the parent who is constantly abusive

Another advantage that we had, ironically, was surprise was on our side this time. Remember
the Yorktown and how I mentioned it being badly damaged and had limped back to Pearl
Harbor. Well the Carrier required a complete overhaul and the Captain went to the hospital to
recover while Nimitz and the other cryptologists tried to figure out what AF meant, (at this
point, they did not know that AF meant Midway and not the Aleutian Islands) and who would
replace the sick Captain. Once Nimitz talked to the Captain, he asked for his recommendation
and he said one of the destroyer Captains should command it and Nimitz was surprised but
agreed. Then Nimitz went to the repair yard at the docks and when they were asked about how
long it would take to repair the carrier because they needed it for wherever AF was. The repair
crew replied that to fix the damaged carrier they would need 3 months to repair it Nimitz replied
saying we don t have 3 months, I will give you 3 days to fix it. When they were done it was not
pretty, but it was seaworthy they did all the repairs in 3 days in what would should have taken 3
months to do.
Once the Yorktown was combat ready it left Pearl Harbor for Midway Island. While at Midway
itself, the island was preparing itself for the attack by the Japanese.

Originally, the crime of kidnapping was defined as the unlawful and non consensual transportation

began to redefine kidnapping, most notably eliminating the requirement for interstate transport.
Under the laws of most states, kidnapping is a crime where the victim has transported a substantial

of purposes for kidnapping including collecting ransom, inflicting bodily injury, or terrorizing

Unfortunately, many animals on earth are facing the same tragedy. These animals are primarily
from a time that no human kept records. They are living, breathing history that will die off because
the superior species could not protect them. In this picture by Gonzaga Manzo, the Black

On the off chance that individuals don t have faith in you like they have confidence in death and

It s a clever thought, a witty subversion of both standard dream religious philosophies and

Stereotypes Of Women In Great Expectations
In Manners Makyth Man, Reverand E.J. Hardy said Sweetness is to woman what sugar is to
fruit. It is her first business to be happy a sunbeam in the house, making others happy. True, she
will often have a tear in her eye , but, like the bride of young Lochinvar, it must be accompanied
with a smile on her lips, (Haluk). Women in the Victorian Erawere expected to be everything a man

Joe and Miss. Havisham are terrible representations of a Victorian woman. A woman was
literally the servant of her children and husband, and she was required to be domestic, nurturing
and docile, (Haluk). In Mrs. Joe s home, she is the boss and takes great pride in the fact that she
raised Pip by hand and has threatened to do the same to her husband. This shows that Mrs. Joe is
quite the opposite of what the everyday Victorian woman was like in the home. Instead, Mrs.
Joe is more like some women today where it is not unacceptable for a woman to order around
her children and husband . Miss. Havisham didn t take care of Estella the way most mothers
would have. Or, said Estella, which is a nearer case if you had taught her [Estella], from the
dawn of her intelligence, with your utmost energy and might, that there was such a thing as

it, for it had blighted you and would else blight her if you had done this, and then, for a purpose,
had wanted her to take naturally to the daylight and she could not do it, you would have been
disappointed and angry, (Dickens, 326). Instead of nurturing her and teaching her what love feels
like, she showed her what pain was and created a weapon that would kill any man she touched. In
chapter eight of Great Epectations, Miss. Havisham says to Pip, You are not afraid of a woman
who has never seen the sun since you were born, (Dickens, 60).

Analysis Of The Play Blood Wedding
I chose to review and research the play Blood Wedding. The setting of the play was placed in
Spain during the early 1930 s. It is based on a true story. In 1928, a young man was murdered by
his cousin in Madrid the night before his wedding. The play gives more detail to what happened
with a bride who is stuck between getting married to someone new than being with someone she
loves that she has known from years ago before she met her fiancГ©. The main characters of this
play are the bride, bridegroom, and the bridegroom s mother. The mother dug into their business
involving relationships with the bride, another manand her family, but the main conflict is the
actual murder scene of the two men, the bridegroom and Leonardo, who is the other man the
bride had feelings for. This scene left the bride feeling hopeless. Blood Wedding is play that
focuses mainly on society roles of men and women. It was more of a traditional society than what
it is like today. Women are known to be the care givers and stay at home moms that sew, cook, and
clean. This play pursues the way women were treated and thoughtlow of back in history. During the
play, the bride mentioned that she wishes she were a man because she would have more
opportunities and be able to be with who she wanted to marry. Also, the bride s mother in law
mentioned several times that she wants grandchildren, exactly six and hopefully girls, so she can
teach them how to sew. This is wrong because people should not assume that

Waiter Analysis
you would think there would only be one type of waiter, the kind that does whatever they can to
get the best tip. there are three types of waiters the rookie, the slacker, and the veteran . no matter
what one you get, you re going to get your meal; the question is will the time in the restaurant
meet your standards. the type of waiter you get plays a huge roll in your dining experience, and
can really make or break your timeout. the rookie; you can always tell who this is by the first
couple of minutes, they are very unsure of themselves and are shy and always seem scared by
what could the next question be. the service isn t bad when you have a rookie waiter, but you can
tell they are flustered and have so much going on at that exact moment. you ll ask... Show more

you sit down and they are ready for you and don t even have to write down any drink orders and
have them out for you extremely fast. the veteran always seems to know when your ready to order
and has no problems with substitutions and gets everything done quickly and with a great
attitude. your food comes out and if something comes out wrong they quickly fix it and make
sure to take it off the bill. you never have to ask for a refill and they already have dressings out
before dinner is even served. they always have a happy face on and want you to enjoy your meal,
you can just tell they have been doing this for a while and know exactly what to do. the veteran
is the waiter you always hope to get, even on the busiest nights the service is still above average.
no matter what kind of waiter you are, being a server is a tough job and you have to put up with
a lot of crazy people. in a perfect world they would all be classified as a veteran but it s not, and
unfortunately theres still the slackers and the rookies that well all hope they turn into a vet some
day. no matter what server you have you should always leave a tip, cause remember thats how they

Individuality And Conformity In Fahrenheit 451 By Ray...
Individuality is feared because it is seen as a threat in a society expects all citizens to conform.
Individuality is when a particular person is aware of what is happening around them, while
conformity is when a person s behavior is in accordance with socially accepted conventions or
standards. In the book Fahrenheit 451by Ray Bradbury, characters in the book show the relationship
between conformityand individuality because those who conform, follow society s rules while
individuals still conform in a way, but retain their individuality by showing that they are
physically and mentally mindful of their actions. People have chosen to conform because
individuality is rejected in a conformist society. Mrs. Phelps, a friend of Montag s wife, is one of
those who chose to conform. In the novel, they have always been told that books are evil which
is why it must be burnt. She said, I ve always said poetry and tears, poetry and suicide and crying
and awful feelings, poetry and sickness; all that mush! Now I ve had it proved to me. You re
nasty Mr. Montag, you re nasty! (101). In other words, she is agreeing to what society instilled to
them about books. By shaming Montag, she conforms since she rejects him for his individuality.
On the other hand, a seventeen year old girl named Clarisse McClellan is left out by society due to
her individuality. She still conforms in some way, but maintains her individuality by following her
heart. It was raining when Montag was on a

Soccer Vs Football Compare And Contrast
Soccer vs. Football
Soccer and Football have long been high class sports with ample amount of respect and dignity,
groomed through history. Regulations and guidelines have been set in stone and shifted throughout
the course of competition. Safety is key in both recreational sports and has become essential for
the protection of the people that participate. Stylistically the two sports contain a different overall
goal, however the techniques vary. From a beginners point of view the sports seem derived from a
primary source, however in the overall scheme they differentiate through many different loop holes.
These differences will be depicted throughout the essay, allowing the reader to grasp a better
understanding of the sports as a whole. In reality soccer and football are extremely similar, yet
diverse in many ways.
Historically speaking these sports derived from one another, if soccer was none existent there
would be no American football in today s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The official rules of soccer were founded in England ( A Brief History of Soccer ). Although we
are not sure when or how it originated, evidence dating back nearly three thousand years ago in
China shows that a small fur stuffed leather ball was used as the official game piece of a purely foot
based activity with the overall objective being to score into opposite teams net likely known as
Tsu Chu. The brutality of the sport grew over time as the games overall principles were toyed
with, causing more injuries and controversy with higher powers in England, during the ruling of
King Edward, resulting in expulsion and arrest if caught participating in the sport ( A Brief History
of Soccer ). Hundreds of years later the popularity in the sport had grown tremendously in England,
allowing teams to be formed in schools. Soon after, the Americans started to

The Vietnamese Of The Vietnam
Situated on the Indochina peninsula in Southeast Asia, Vietnam is the eastern most country
bordered by China to the north, Laos and Cambodia to the west, the Gulf of Tonkin and the South
China Sea to the east, and the Gulf of Thailand to the south. Prior to the conquest of Indochina by
the French, Vietnam was ruled by the Chinese for more than eight centuries. However, after several
years of resistance the Vietnamese overthrew the Chinese kingdom in their country and thus
became independent. In spite of gaining freedom, the Vietnamese rulers continued to uphold the
Chinese system of governance, policy making and also its culture. In fact, most of the Vietnamese
were largely influenced by the Chinese culture and religion, mainly Taoism, Buddhism and
Confucianism.
The French troops entered the land of Vietnam in the year 1858 and by the mid 1880s they had
established a firm grip over the northern region. After the defeat of China in the Franco Chinese war
(1884 85), the French assumed complete supremacy over the central Vietnam
(Annam), the northern Vietnam (Tonkin), the southern Vietnam (Cochinchina) along with Laos
and Cambodia, which they collectively called French Indo china that was formed in the year 1887.
However, France gained control over the southern Vietnam only after it had signed a peace treaty,
the Treaty of Saigon on July 5th, 1862.
The real motive behind the French colonization was profit, economic exploitation and political
supremacy. The demand for

The Discrimination Of African Americans
A nation with an infinitely diverse population, such as America, contains many minorities, but
being a minority in A country has set backs. Being a minority comes with stereotypes and prejudice;
although the majority faces prejudice too, it may not be as prevalent as prejudice towards the
minority. Equality in America is on the rise, but most minorities face problems that they faced years
ago. African Americans, Latinos, Asians, Native Americans, and Cajuns have struggled in different
ways while residing in the United Statesof America. African American people have made many
strides in American culture. They faced equality issues, enslavement, yet the culture still deals with
prejudice and discrimination. African Americans were also... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Although the wealth gap between blacks and whites is still unbelievably big, African American s
income and employment rates are steadily on the rise (Desilver) . African American s tend to move
up in their same social class or completely move out of it. Even though African Americans face
prejudice and discrimination, they are not the only minority group to experience these issues. The
Latino population in the United States of America continues to rise at a steady rate, but the
minority faces extreme discrimination, for example, there are many subcultures within the Latino
culture, but one may call all Latinos in America Mexicans. The United States government even
created the term Hispanic to provide a name for a diverse population from the Spanish speaking
culture (Carteret). According to the United States Department of Justice Hispanic is a race, but the
Bureau of Census does not recognize it as a race (Carteret). Latino is how Americans from Mexico,
Puerto Rico, South America, the Dominican Republic, and Cuba identify themselves.. Although the
largest population of Latinos in America is the Mexican population (64.9%), there are about nine
other cultures that have a distinct population in America (Motel and Patten). Puerto Ricans and
Cubans make up the second and third largest Hispanic population in America. Even though all three
of these countries speak Spanish, each one has its own vocabulary and accents. Puerto Ricans pride
their culture in music, whereas

The on going slowdown in the OEM business in automotive and UPS sectors is expected to work
as a boon as it will help the company in maintaining its market share in the aftermarket sectors.
Since the company is spending major portion of its capex in expansion of existing facilities as a
result there is a threat of losing out to aggressive competitors.
Profitability risk :
Inflation could affect the company s profitability. Continuous Improvement (CI) and Lean
Management programmes have strengthened its return on investment. This enabled the Company
to reduce wastage, power consumption and improve productivity, product quality.

Domestic Violence Against Men By Suzanne Steinmetz
The earliest literature reference to domestic violence against men can be found in the studies of
Suzanne Steinmetz (1977,1978) entitled, The Battered Husband Syndrome. She hypothesizes that
the incidents of husband on wife beatings rivals the incidents of wife perpetrated batterings, and
that it was husbandabuse not wife abuse that was underreported form of domestic violence.
Steinmetz used two United States populations, a broadband nonrepresentative group and a random
sample in New Castle, Delaware in the form of police reports and family surveys. The small study
found only small differences in the percent of men and women who resorted to violencein the
context of pushing, shoving, or hitting with hands or an object. This suggested early on that
domestic violence is not a one way street. Husband beating is a serious issue and needs attention
due to the fact that it is grossly underreported. Steinmetz received numerous criticism from her
colleagues on this concept. In later studies, Murray Straus, Richard Gelles, and Suzanne Steinmetz
(1980), authors of the book, Behind Closed Doors: Violence in The American Family, supports
Steinmetz s earlier studies in finding that women acted violently during marital affairs compared to
a similar number of men who act violently in the United States. The study used 2,413 family
surveys, finding in majority of them that the level of violence was a mutual or bilateral activity,
with only 27% of cases finding that husbands were the

  • 2. Hegemony Model Of Political Discourse The next example worth looking at is another cartoon by Bengough entitled Renewing The Lease (See Fig.2). The context of this cartoon was that though John A. Macdonald had resigned, he launched a new campaigning in the 1878 election with his signature policy platform, the National Policy , which was centred on Protectionism (e.g. tariffs on American manufacturing goods) the completion of the CPR ( Scandals and Changes. Par. 24). In addition to scandals, elections also provide an opportunity to discuss the influence the press has in politics, not as representatives of popular political sentiments, but of private political ambitions. The political cartoon is a powerful device in this situation as through its seemingly innocuous humour,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The background of this cartoon was that, despite the surmounting allegations of Ford s inappropriate and potentially illegal activities, he maintained a considerably strong base of supporters known as Ford Nation . Despite the size of Ford s political base, the cartoon attempts to satirize them for their unwavering support. Indecently, the side of the cartoon they are placed on could very well be interpreted as a subtle way of critiquing right wing populists as a whole. With this in mind, the couple on the left (in both senses of the word) would then represent what the cartoonist would propose to be the mainstream voting population. This cartoon would then be a clear example of an incorporation resistance struggle between the two political communities where the presumably dominant left (seen as rational and responsible voters) subsumes the subordinate right into their political narrative by oversimplifying their ideological significance to an absurd faction in Torontonian politics with an unreasonable allegiance to a corrupt yet celebrity like mayor. Considering the central image of the billboard, the cartoon could also be taken to be a critique of the legal system as the fact that Rob Ford has not been arrested for his illegal dealings. ... • 3. Iran Essay Iran and the IAEA s Earlier Attempts Following the discovery of the undeclared construction of a large underground nuclear related facility in Natanz and the existence of highly enriched uranium in 2002, the Iranian nuclear crisis began in full force. The following summer, the then director of the IAEA, Mohamed ElBaradei, presented a report to the IAEA Board of Governors in which failures and breaches of safeguards by Iran were cited without ambiguity and additional inspections were recommended (Mousavin 66). Despite this, ElBaradei refused to say the Iran was in noncompliance with its safeguards (Brown 174). In February 2006, Iran was referred to the S.C. by the IAEA Board of Governors and in June, China, Russia and the U.S. joined the E3 to form the P5+1. In response, Iran announced that they would resume uranium enrichment activities and end implementation of the Additional Protocol ( Iran 1). Before advancing further, it is necessary to analyze the events of 2003 2005 to understand the role of the IAEA during this period and why such broad international assistance was needed to achieve the slightest of results. After receiving the Board of Director s resolution of September 2003, Iran immediately questioned its authority as it was outside of the Safeguards Agreements and Additional Protocol. Iran believed the resolution and request for cooperation had no legal base and would be accepted not as an international obligation but as a gesture of goodwill and a confidence building measure (Mousavin 74). It was not until Iran was threatened with referral to the S.C. under Article XII, Paragraph C of the IAEA statute that they began to comply. Iran was not prepared to handle the consequences of a referral, which would threaten the country with isolation (Mousavin 76). In addition, suspicion of Iran had spread from the Western countries to Russia, China, and its Middle Eastern neighbors. It was only after immense ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It s almost as if homophobic men were in charge of lawmaking, but would get enjoyment out of seeing two women kissing. So just because of that disgusting inequality, women were allowed to carry on with their chosen same sex partners women s rights only matter when they benefit men it sees. Yet until 1951 sodomy was considered a punishable, criminal act in New South Wales, 1951, that s not long enough ago for Australia to be considered LGBT+ friendly, yet it s still considered one of the more supportive countries. Some disputes have been made among behavior theorists that because the theory lacks structure, it is not as effective in treating illness. However, it is one of the main theories utilized by therapists today. Cognitive Behavioral Therapyis another popular theory that is used. It emphasizes the present and fixing cognitive distortions that clients may have. However, it too received some arguments against it, such as; treating symptoms and not the underlying cause of an illness. He also believed that the need for defense mechanisms stems from childhood (Rogers, 1962). Children are taught conditional positive regard. When parents need to correct a child s behavior, love is usually withheld. They are taught to hide faults and weaknesses rather than accepting them. However, through unconditional positive regard individuals may know that they are loved unconditionally. By acceptance I mean a warm regard for him as a person of unconditional self worth of value no matter what his condition, his behavior, or his feelings (Rogers, 1961). Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) addresses maladaptive thinking and feelings in individuals. It was originally developed to treat depression and anxiety but is now used for many different disorders. It is a very effective type of therapy because it is time limited. The amount of sessions is usually between four and fourteen. CBT focuses on schemas or core beliefs which are usually negative thoughts like I m worthless or I m not loveable (Beck, 1970). In order to treat cognitive distortions the negative thoughts need to be addressed. First, the individual needs to recognize idiosyncratic cognitions . Next, they will need to distance themselves in order to be objective. Lastly, they may correct cognitive distortions and deficiencies by identifying what type of faulty thinking they may engage in The different types of faulty thinking are; arbitrary inference, ... So why is it that we, as men of God, are not watchful enough to see that our spiritual battery is low? Why don t we regularly recharge it? Maybe check yourself into a hotel or something overnight and just lie on your face before God, listening. Some of you may be in crucial situations right now. How much time have you spent before the Lord, praying, reading and studying his Word to get yourself back on track? I ve learned that women are looking for a man of God. Don t you dare allow fear to consume your faith. You have to be willing to trust God, even when you are at the point where you have more bills than you got money and you re trying to figure out what you re going to do. The devil is always present when you are pressured . . . You cannot allow the enemy to push you to do anything that is offensive to God that you know will take you out of position with God. The enemy wants to get you to a place where you will start working so many hours that you re too tired to pray and can t spend time reading the word or studying scripture. Do you understand me? When you have no time for yourself, you become an agitated individual. We already have an angry streak in us. When you are tired, you will become even more flustered. And nobody wants to be around you because of how you are carrying yourself. That s why you have to stand fast in the faith. You ve got to believe God in the midst of everything. • 9. The True Lesson Of 1984 1984 is a renowned dystopian novel that depicts an oppressive, dark English society where English socialism is fervently adopted by the central government, also known as the Big Brother. However, the fundamental notion of this political philosophy, which is to overcome the greed, waste, competitiveness, and inequality as described in the article The True Lessons of 1984, are distorted and trimmed down into three sacred principles: Newspeak, Doublethink and Mutability of the past. The incidental appearance of totalitarian dictatorship that comes with such philosophy, on the other hand, is almost inevitable, for socialism is an ideology that essentially is against the human nature as well as repressing the instincts. In the article,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For the general public, on the other hand, there are also such treatments that are used to influence people in the means of propaganda, espionage, and falsification. After letting Oceanian citizens deny their own nature, the second step Big Brother takes, is to have them deny the existence of the truth. Schlueter mentions, based upon Bacon, that Baconian science rests on the assumption that reality conforms to the mind, not the mind to reality and remarks afterwards, This is not far from the claim that the mind makes reality. To deny the reality, is to deny one s sanity and senses. How many in total is two fingers plus two fingers? 3? 4? 5? As suggested by the Big Brother, it can be whatever number one wants it to be as long as he thinks about it subjectively. People can create anything in their mind with or without any factual information. As a result, doublethink and mutability of the past are introduced. Since laws of nature are essentially unalterable, doublethink manages to instill a sense of duality to it, making people believe its contradictory characters. In the book, for example, O brien makes Winston, who have the scientific knowledge about gravity, to believe that he is actually floating above the ground. Therefore, doublethink requires absolutely no factual information whatsoever. • 10. Literary Review of Sexuality and Gender in Science Fiction... Literary Review My argument is that SF literature offers a utopian hope for the future where individual differences are no longer criticized. To conduct this literature review I used multiple information sources to examine issues of gender and sexuality within science fiction literature. None of these sources claim to have produced a conclusive work on the interpretation of gender and sexuality in SF. Some of what I have read seems to be a general overview while some is more focused, but everything clearly references other theorists, studies and texts to back up the arguments made. In other words feminist SF is an effective and powerful means for feminist visionary developments that are crucial for the initial attempts to embark on the cultural and social changes that are the goals for the feminist political enterprise. Hollinger discusses Le Guin s view that feminist SF doesn t prophecy the future but it refers to the world as it is. This is interesting because it emphasises this idea that the SF can explore such issues of gender and sexuality in reality. Hollinger references works such as The Female Man, Bloodchild , The Left Hand of Darkness and Women on the Edge of Time together with people like Donna Harraway, Teresa de Lauretis and Judith Butler. In addition to the well known feminist utopian works of the 70 s Hollinger also mentions Helen O Loy, which is an early masculine focused novel. We see the importance of feminist SF when we read about works such as this, because the contrast shows that some SF writers obviously didn t identify the historical possibility and cultural traditionalism of our notions regarding gender and sexual identity and the roles of men and women. Hollinger brings together plenty of evidence to back up her points about feminist theory and SF making for a comprehensive essay. As the years went on and new laws were passed for citizenship, white southerners continued to come up with ways to restrict Blacks from many social activities in which they were already granted through the laws of the Constitution. By the 19th century, many social forms of discrimination existed to keep Black Americans from being equal to White Americans. Laws like separate but equal where put into places to keep Black Americans from being in the same places as White Americans, like; neighborhoods, schools, churches, restaurants, and so on. • 13. Research Methodology For Research Methods Essay Survey research methods are one of the most widely used research methods in education. This non experimental, quantitative research design is most often used to gather information about the subject s attitude, beliefs, opinions, or similar types of information (McMillian Schumacher, 2010). With this method, the researcher selects a sample of subjects and either administers a questionnaire or conducts interviews to collect data from the subjects. There are several benefits to using surveys in educational research. First of all, the researcher can gather information from a small group of subjects (the sample), but apply the results to a larger number of people (the population). Additionally, many educational researchers choose survey methods because of the versatility, efficiency and generalizability that surveys provide (Schutt, 1996). Surveys are versatile, because they have been used in many different areas of educational research. They are also very cost efficient and, for the most part, do not require the time that most other methods do. This makes them popular among researchers. As previously mentioned, the researcher can gather data from a small group of subjects instead of the entire population, but generalize the results to the population. This, in itself, is a huge benefit when sample generalizability is a goal. Important Considerations for Survey Research Design Although survey research design is the most widely used in educational research, it is not the only ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Additionally, communication of the notes information by nurses during rounds is not reflecting best practiceand critical thinking. The purpose of this paper is to outline a proposal that will aim at improving these two aspects of professional nursing practice. Introduction On a biweekly basis, interprofessional team rounds are held on each unit to update the plan of care and to discuss ways to optimize a resident s cognitive, physical, and psychosocial abilities. As the individual who has the most interaction with the resident, nurses play a key role in communicating to the team, the resident s overall health status. • 17. Relationship Between Bitter Flavors And Bitter Flavor Abstract The realization of this experiment had as main objective to show the relationship between the bitter flavor in spinach and the bitter flavor in Phenylthiocarbamide (PTC). In many past studies about this relationship the results have shown that there is a significant difference between the bitter taste in some vegetables and the bitter flavor present in PTC (Sandell Breslin,2006). In order to approve or disapprove this hypothesis 19 students in the same class were tested to see if they tasted the bitter flavor in spinach. The spinach leaves were blended with mango juice using a blender machine. The result of this part of the experiment were recorded in a table to be analyzed. The results showed that 26.3% of the subjects were super tasters of the spinach (indicating that they tasted the bitter flavor). In contrast about 73.7% of the same subjects were considered to be super tasters for the PTC (grading the bitter flavor 4 or 5 in a 5 scale; being 5 the maximum for bitterness). In conclusion it can be say that this two results were not very related. This experiment can be used to further analyze how some vegetables may have bitter flavor and not be correlated to the bitter taste in PTC. Athena, once greatly praising the courage of Odysseus, hit new heights of rage (22.234) when he became overcome with fear as more suitors and enemies gathered in the hall, waiting to kill him. Athena then goes as far as to mock the fear that overcame Odysseus when she states now you ve returned to your own house, your own wealth / bewail the loss of your combat strength in a war with suitors? (22.242 243) This emphasis on suitors shows both their inner weakness and the disgust Athena has towards them, giving Odysseus the advantage in the slaughter. This advantage is demonstrated when six of the suitors attempt to attack Odysseus and his comrades with spears, but Athena sent the whole salvo wide of the mark (22.269). Immediately after, Odysseus and his comrades return the attack and successfully kill four of the opposing men. After another round of slaughtering success, Odysseus begins to overcome the fear of the Supreme Ordeal. This fear is not lost; however, for it is turned around and placed on the remaining suitors by Athena when she terrifies the suitors out of their minds, and down the hall they panicked / wild, like herds stampeding, driven mad as the darting gadfly / strikes in the late spring when the ling days come round (22.313 315). In this case strains refer to Giardia agilis, Giardia muris, and Giardia lamblia. To identify between the three main giardia strains (Giardia agilis, Giardia muris, and Giardia lamblia) requires scientists to look at tiny structural details to determine what specific strain they are dealing with (Feely and Erlandsen, 1985). For example: Giardia agilis has a more elongated body in comparison to the other two strains (Feely and Erlandsen, 1985). Giardia muris is increasingly difficult to distinguish from Giardia lamblia therefore they typically observe its preferred host (Finch, Black, Labatiuk, Gyurek, Belosevic,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is widely accepted and known that the parasite causes abnormal responses within the body leading to cases of diarrhea (Adam, 1991). A simple explanation of diarrhea is the loose and foul smelling bowel movements, including actual excretion (Adam, 1991). Diarrhea can begin once the giardia cyst(s) is ingested into the human body and travels through the digestive tract and reproduces in the small intestine (Adam, 1991; Gillin and Reiner, 1996). However, the estimated number of giardia cysts needed to be ingested to result in diarrhea is 10 cysts and the symptoms typically occur 6 to 15 days after initial ingestion, making it extremely difficult to determine the form(s) of transfer mechanisms involved (Ankarklev et al., 2010). The time lapse is needed to allow for cyst and trophozoite reproduction and growth (excystation) to overwhelm the body and cause the diarrhea (Ankarklev et al., 2010). The prevention of the disease remains the main key of the strategy to stop the epidemic. It starts with the makeup, applied in a dimly lit dressing room, surrounded by other actors in the same position. Foundation put on so heavily that the face resembles a just painted wall and lips stained for weeks after the final performance. Mascara applied thinly at first. Then, darker and darker so that the people in the back can tell that your eyelashes are there. And in one swift motion, much like the act of painting, a dollop of crimson red lines the cheekbone in a grand finale. The makeup is what makes you appear different. It keeps the illusion alive. Reciting the lines is just the beginning of acting the part. The emotion conveyed brings the character to life. Dorothy was not just a girl in a movie or a book. She was living, breathing, growing. She was me, and I was her. This is how theatre was meant to work. As the performance ended, the reality of what I was losing became very clear to me. I said my last line, stood in my last position, and bowed together with the wonderful cast I got to share my journey with. The lights dimmed, the music played in conclusion, and the curtains closed slowly, signifying the end of a star performance. Once the black curtains hit each other, in a final round of applause, the cast scattered in joy towards the meet and greet. • 37. Analysis Of The Play Blood Wedding I chose to review and research the play Blood Wedding. The setting of the play was placed in Spain during the early 1930 s. It is based on a true story. In 1928, a young man was murdered by his cousin in Madrid the night before his wedding. The play gives more detail to what happened with a bride who is stuck between getting married to someone new than being with someone she loves that she has known from years ago before she met her fiancГ©. The main characters of this play are the bride, bridegroom, and the bridegroom s mother. The mother dug into their business involving relationships with the bride, another manand her family, but the main conflict is the actual murder scene of the two men, the bridegroom and Leonardo, who is the other man the bride had feelings for. This scene left the bride feeling hopeless. Blood Wedding is play that focuses mainly on society roles of men and women. It was more of a traditional society than what it is like today. Women are known to be the care givers and stay at home moms that sew, cook, and clean. This play pursues the way women were treated and thoughtlow of back in history. During the play, the bride mentioned that she wishes she were a man because she would have more opportunities and be able to be with who she wanted to marry. Also, the bride s mother in law mentioned several times that she wants grandchildren, exactly six and hopefully girls, so she can teach them how to sew. This is wrong because people should not assume that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 39. Individuality And Conformity In Fahrenheit 451 By Ray... Individuality is feared because it is seen as a threat in a society expects all citizens to conform. Individuality is when a particular person is aware of what is happening around them, while conformity is when a person s behavior is in accordance with socially accepted conventions or standards. In the book Fahrenheit 451by Ray Bradbury, characters in the book show the relationship between conformityand individuality because those who conform, follow society s rules while individuals still conform in a way, but retain their individuality by showing that they are physically and mentally mindful of their actions. People have chosen to conform because individuality is rejected in a conformist society. Mrs. Phelps, a friend of Montag s wife, is one of those who chose to conform. In the novel, they have always been told that books are evil which is why it must be burnt. She said, I ve always said poetry and tears, poetry and suicide and crying and awful feelings, poetry and sickness; all that mush! Now I ve had it proved to me. You re nasty Mr. Montag, you re nasty! On the other hand, a seventeen year old girl named Clarisse McClellan is left out by society due to her individuality. The Vietnamese Of The Vietnam Situated on the Indochina peninsula in Southeast Asia, Vietnam is the eastern most country bordered by China to the north, Laos and Cambodia to the west, the Gulf of Tonkin and the South China Sea to the east, and the Gulf of Thailand to the south. Prior to the conquest of Indochina by the French, Vietnam was ruled by the Chinese for more than eight centuries. However, after several years of resistance the Vietnamese overthrew the Chinese kingdom in their country and thus became independent. In spite of gaining freedom, the Vietnamese rulers continued to uphold the Chinese system of governance, policy making and also its culture. In fact, most of the Vietnamese were largely influenced by the Chinese culture and religion, mainly Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism. The French troops entered the land of Vietnam in the year 1858 and by the mid 1880s they had established a firm grip over the northern region. After the defeat of China in the Franco Chinese war (1884 85), the French assumed complete supremacy over the central Vietnam (Annam), the northern Vietnam (Tonkin), the southern Vietnam (Cochinchina) along with Laos and Cambodia, which they collectively called French Indo china that was formed in the year 1887. • 45. Domestic Violence Against Men By Suzanne Steinmetz The earliest literature reference to domestic violence against men can be found in the studies of Suzanne Steinmetz (1977,1978) entitled, The Battered Husband Syndrome. She hypothesizes that the incidents of husband on wife beatings rivals the incidents of wife perpetrated batterings, and that it was husbandabuse not wife abuse that was underreported form of domestic violence. Steinmetz used two United States populations, a broadband nonrepresentative group and a random sample in New Castle, Delaware in the form of police reports and family surveys. The small study found only small differences in the percent of men and women who resorted to violencein the context of pushing, shoving, or hitting with hands or an object. This suggested early on that domestic violence is not a one way street. Husband beating is a serious issue and needs attention due to the fact that it is grossly underreported. Steinmetz received numerous criticism from her colleagues on this concept. In later studies, Murray Straus, Richard Gelles, and Suzanne Steinmetz (1980), authors of the book, Behind Closed Doors: Violence in The American Family, supports Steinmetz s earlier studies in finding that women acted violently during marital affairs compared to a similar number of men who act violently in the United States. The study used 2,413 family surveys, finding in majority of them that the level of violence was a mutual or bilateral activity, with only 27% of cases finding that husbands were the ...
