Good Friend Definition
What is a friend? A friend is someone who will always tell you the truth. They are the there for
you through the hard times and the easy times. They will never leave your side because they
will understand you. A friend is someone you can count on to do anything with. They will never
hurt you and will always have something to say. They wouldn t keep secrets from you, they
would be the first ones to say if something is wrong. They will be more like your brother or sister to
you because they will know you very well. Most important, a friend is someone you will loveto be
around because they brighten your day. An example of a good friend is someone that can hurt you
by telling you the truth. A bad friend can be someone that will lie to you and... Show more content

In on way, why are they different is because they are both different grades with different
requirements. An eight grader doesn t have to be responsible of their work, because they have it
all in their classes. Now, a ninth grader has to be responsible when it comes to their work
because they take it everywhere. Being a freshman requires so much work and so much effort
because you are new to the environment, it is a new life situation because you are not
considered a kid anymore you are more considered as a teenager with responsibilities. There are
many things a freshman has to do than an eight grader. Such as completing every single subject
for every single class, also taking responsibilities of your actions. In High School you don t come
here to play any games because it is your life after these 4 years are over. In eight grade, lets say
you still don t have to take many responsibilities as a freshman. You have to be ready to
participate and collaborate on anything the teacher says, that will benefit you a lot. The work is
slightly different as well because it s harder and you just have to try your very best. It s good to
consider yourself to do good on many because the positive energy is what will help you threw your

Sarah Kane Crave Analyse
My over arching idea for my production of Crave is that I want to give the play some context
while also maintaining the theme that these characters could represent anyone. The reason I
want to give the play some background is because on my first read of the play, before I read the
Saunders article in which Sarah Kane talks about the relationships between C and A, and B and
M, a lot of the themes of the play were lost on me because I was so focused on trying to figure
out what was going on. I know Sarah Kane didn t want the characters to get stuck in specific
categories, but by establishing relationships between the characters I think the audience will be
able to focus more on what the characters are saying and less on trying to discern what... Show

I don t want the rest of the stage to be dark though, as that would isolate the characters when I
want them to talk to each other, so the rest of the stage is slightly dimmer then the spots. The
tone and color of the fill lights changes slightly throughout the show, following the color changes
of the cyclorama. The cyc is my central design element for the show. When I read Crave, it
seemed to me that the play was divided into different emotional sections, and I want to use the
cyc to reflect that. When the lights come up after the characters enter, I want the cyc to be a
medium dark purple, which I think helps give the feeling that the play is taking place in the city,
which is what I gathered from the dialogue. The purple should be dark enough that it gives the
audience a sense of unease, as each of the characters relate depressing tales and talk heatedly with
one another. When A begins his speech, I want the cyc to fade into a bright amber that assaults the
audience s eyes when it first appears. This symbolizes how upon first glance, A s speech appears
happy and innocent, which the color yellow is associated with, but that yellow is tainted with
something darker and sinister, making it amber. Then, when C mentions being raped, I want the
cyc to fade to a scarlet red, because this I think this marked the transition to the most violent part
of the play. Then when C says, No one can hate me more than myself , I want the cyc to start
transitioning to a medium blue. As the play continues, I want that blue to get continually darker,
symbolizing the characters sinking into despair. When B says Kill me , I want the cyc and all of
the lights to fade away, implying that the characters have passed away. Then for the last few lines
of the play, I want just the cyc to light up bright white, so you can only see the actors silhouettes. I
want the audience

The Novel The Expedition Of Humphry Clinker By Tobias...
The epistolary novel, a novel that is written entirely in the form of letters, first gained traction in
the early 18th century. Two epistolary novels that encapsulated this style very well were
Dangerous Liaisons and Evelina. The similarities are also not solely in terms of writing style. Both
of these authors use the letters that their characters write as a method of deception to obtain what
they truly desire, even if it does not appear as such. Despite the divide that separates them in genre,
both Burney and Laclos exhibited this style very well as the authors used these letters to convey
their characters goals, intentions, and desires to the reader in their works.
We will first examine the novel by Pierre Ambrose Laclos, Dangerous Liaisons. There are a few
reasons why Laclos letters provided a sense of importance stylistically. Dangerous Liaisons was
not a typical work, as it was the first French epistolary novel to use more than one perspective
(Brittanica). As we know The Expedition of Humphry Clinker by Tobias Smollett was published
in 1771, had multiple perspectives displayed through letters, but Smollett was a Scot, and his
work was set in both England and Scotland. His work was never able to gain much popularity in
France. French literature in general did not implore this style; they usually followed a more
traditionalist model when it came to the novel. He was also the first French author to employ letters
that were not designed solely for reporting events.

Explication Of The Raven By Edgar Allan Poe
Holly Hecox Perdue English Composition II 28 February 2016 Explication: The Raven by
Edgar Allan Poe Through the use of an un named narrator in his poem entitled The Raven , Poe
darkly conveys feeling understood by many: hopelessness, lost love, and death. The poem
follows the un named narrator, as he reflects on, as well as struggles with, the realization of his
lost love, Lenore. Like many, he tries to detract his overwhelming feelings for Lenore by
investing his time in studying books. Despite his greatest efforts, he is unsuccessful. Much to
his surprise, his solitude is interrupted by an unanticipated visitor. Throughout the poem, Poe
uses imagery, tone, symbolism, and rhyme as a means of conveying his overall themes of
undying devotion and lingering grief. Around midnight on a bleak December night, a weak and
weary man is reading while nearly napping . He reads as a means of nullifying the sorrow he
feels for the lost Lenore . Suddenly, he is jolted alert by some visitor tapping at his chamber door.
The lonely man tells himself Tis some visitor and nothing more , but as he widely opens his
chamber door, he finds darkness there and nothing more . Staring into the darkness, the narrator
dreams about the impossibilities of his lost love, and even whispers her name; Lenore . Upon
returning to his chamber, a stronger tapping, at the window, is catching his attention. Courageously
exploring the noise, he is amused and relieved when a raven flies in from

Noels article, talks about the comparison of the Haudenosaunee to the Anglo Americans, as well as
the Dutch and the French women to the Anglo Americans women. His main points were about the
power that is behind their voices, when it came to political and economic opinions. Noel article
main thesis states that these entrepreneurs were accepted figures among the Dutch and French of
North America a minority to be sure, but not an insignificant one. In vastly larger numbers, ordinary
women traded their produces and handiwork at local markets . Noel also states that compared to

When convincing the readers of the influences that the indigenous women and their neighbours

idea of how the Haudenoseunee had man address the man and women address the the women.
Where is the European society men were seen as addressing both the men and women . In terms
of the French and the Dutch women had some power that was given to them by there husband
weather it was written or given verbally. Noel also states that men were either for or against
women having a say. French women were normally seen as influential , yet many men still
complained. In one account of Madame Vaudreuil ingratiated herself with the marine. Crinent
quotes that she controls all the positions in Canada... she writes magnificent letters from all sorts
of places to the seaports about the power she can exert over [ minister pontchartrian]... she offers
her protection, she threatens to use her influences Noel added she causes great fear and imposes
silence on most of those who could speak against her husband . Yet these complaints still did not

Bolshevik Collectivism In Mayakovsky
A work of art is so often, from its inception, a personal creation; and something which is created
from the artist s perception often inevitably becomes a meditation on his inescapable selfhood.
Following the revolution, Russia was marked by a burgeoning utilitarian ideal and a collectivism
which proclaimed, one for all. The 1920s Bolshevik leadership sought to reemploy the avant garde
artists with the aims of instilling the masses with a proletarian mentality. A conflict between the
individual identity and the Bolshevik collectivism threatened to compromise the artist s values and
unique aesthetic aims.
A prime example of this internal discord is illustrated in the works of Mayakovsky. At the outset of
post revolutionary Russia, the poet voices his annoyance at having to make propagandistic posters
in his 1920 poem An Extraordinary Adventure . Ultimately, however, he discovers the merits of this
seemingly uninspiring task by the end of the poem.
These agitprop posters were one of the most ubiquitous resources the government used to educate
and culture the masses. At this point the Bolsheviks were convinced that the values inherent in
science and the arts were congenial to the principles of socialism. Culture was to be a helpmate in
the building of socialism (Kenez, 65). The posters were extremely effective, for they spoke even to
the illiterate. Their content educated, while their modernist style cultured.
Several years later, however, Mayakovsky seems to revert

Analysis Of Rosie The Riveter
Rosie the Riveter Rosie the Riveter was a female icon created in a time of global war during the
1940s; she symbolized women who built ships and planes, and produced munitions (Ellis 478).
She was created to be a reminder to everyone to try new things, test limits, and believe in each
other. (Mather Thrift). She also represents any woman defense worker (Harvey). The women
influenced by her became ambulance drivers, delivered airplanes, and decoded messages (Ellis
478). Norman Rockwell is the artist while Howard Millar was the one who created her (Harvey).
We can do it! is Rosie s famous saying, it was created to get people to do more work by the
federal government (Harvey). Rosie influenced many women during the war time. She caused
women to want to join military in the war. Women Propaganda Propaganda was a big deal for
women during World War Two because it influenced them to join the war and work out of the
house. Until World War Two women were thought to only be helpful in the house however once
they were desperate during the war, they found out women were able to do the same jobs as men
(Mathis). Propaganda was shown in magazine articles, advertisements, radio programs, and
posters of women working; it changed the view of the public on how women should be working
(Mathis). A famous saying The More Women at Work The Sooner We ll Win was on posters to
show the benefit of women being able to help contribute to the war (Mathis). An example from D

The Equation Of Equilibrium Constant
Analysis: The average deviation describes the precision of the results. It was determined the
results our group obtained for were very precise. This is because our average deviation for Keq
was only 6.8 which comes out to be a 6. percent error. Due to our deviation being so low it indicates
that the equilibrium constantis indeed a constant .
Questions: In the lab it uses the definition equilibrium constant, what is meant when equilibrium
constant is referred to, is the ratio of the molar concentrations of the reactants and products for the
reaction. But in order for the ratio to be accurate the system must of reached equilibrium and
temperature must have stayed constant. The value of Keq obtained from all our experiments was
nearly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This calibration curve then created an equation that allowed for the unknown concentration of the
FeSCN2+ ions to be determined.
When you use a spectrophotometer you should not set the wavelength of light to be the same
color of the solution. This is because if you set the wavelength to be the same color of the
solution then no light will be absorbed. The reason why no light will be absorbed is because the
color you see is the wavelength of light that is being reflected so you must set the wavelength to
be the complementary color. The wavelength of light that was chosen for the lab was 450nm
which coincides with a very dark blue color. The reason why choosing a dark blue makes the most
sense for this experiment is because the color of the FeSCN2+ ion was blood red.
Spectrophotometers are quite precise instruments allowing for five significant figures to be
obtained. The major source of error in this lab is how small the concentration of the reagents are.
Because a spectrophotometer is very useful it can be used in more than one lab. It can be used in
a lab to determine the rate law for a color fading reaction. It can also be used in a lab focused on
the visual spectrum, where one can determine how much light different colors absorb at different
wavelengths.
Conclusion: The lab was completed for two main reasons. The first reason was to determine the
equilibrium constant for the

Core Ethical Standards
Within my own career, I plan to follow certain core ethical values as a mandatory requirement. In
my personal life, I have dealt with a lot of negative people or situations, which have left me with
a positive outcome; I have learned what NOT to do or who NOT to be. People have left me, lied
to my face, cheated, disrespected, been untruthful or dishonest, and have broken promises, etc.
Within each of these situations I took the high route instead of being down in the dumps. And I
have heard growing up from my parents, We can learn more from our failures than from our wins,
or we can learn more from a bad boss than a good boss. Because sometimes we need to see what
NOT to do to appreciate the good and to make ourselves more aware of the bad

Theory and the Nursing Process The theoretical basis for public and community nurses began in the
nineteenth century with Florence Nightingale. Nightingale believed in the prevention and
surveillance of diseases. She further believed that a disease was more prevalent in poor
environments. She proved that good health was more prevalent with a good environment for
instance providing adequate ventilation, clean water, warmth, light, and cleanliness during the
Crimean War (Allender, Rector, amp; Warner, 2014).

management ( Community Health Nursing, 2013).
The two theories the Nightingale and the Knowles are an example of the integration of the nursing
and education discipline to promote a health community and protect the population from illness,
communicable diseases, injury, and death. The challenges are great but obtainable.
The use of the survey by the community and public health nurses to identify problems and develop
a plan of action. The development of education programs by employing the Knowles principles to
reach out to the adult learner.
The mission of community and public health nursing is related back to the work of Florence
Nightingale. Her observation that good environment leads to good health and bad environment
leads to bad health.

Political Structure Of Persepolis
The old Persian city of Persepolis is located in the Fars province of modern day Iran. Persian had
a very diverse number of land formations, ranging from plateaus, rainforests, plains, deserts, and
mountain ranges which each hold a unique balance of flora and fauna, and a climate that measures
from hot and dry to moist and tropical. In a way, Persepolisdepended on its surrounding
ecosystems to help support its growth and prosperity. It was located near a dry land called the
Marvdasht Plain and also close to the moist peaks of the Zagros Mountains, and it s a piece of
the Kur River Basin. Even the climate of the areas near Persepolis affected its business. For
example, during the Iranian winter, the landscape would become murky and would be unable to
navigate through. However, during the spring and summer seasons, the areas surrounding
Persepolis would be clear and crossable, allowing the city to proceed in its everyday activity.
Through vigorous research by archaeologists, it has been revealed that Darius I was responsible
for a great amount of structures and periods of construction of Persepolis. In the time period that
Darius I was working on Persepolis was in the years 518 490 B.C. (First period of construction)
During the first phase of the construction of Persepolis, the monumental terrace was built, with the
Apadana audience hall, and finally including the Treasury building complete with stairs on the

Critically Looking At The Research
Critically Looking at the Research
While this research project was taking place, a method(s) of research had to be chosen. Multiple
options were considered such as online research, questioners, and interviews. It was found that the
questionnaires would not help the research because the information that was needed could not be
extrapolated out of a questionnaire. Secondly, interview(s) were ruled out of the question because
there was no one that could be found and contacted that was creditable. There was, however, an
exception to do with the interview later on in the research. This was to do with the required help on
some of the complicated math faced in the project. This was accomplished with the knowledge of
one of the schools mathematics ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When conducting the research, difficulties and challenges were experienced. One of the big
problems faced was finding a way to convert the differential equation into a function. Research
online helped narrow down the problem, and then specifically having a talk/interview with math s
personal at the school allowed for a solution to be found.
Throughout the research the most useful source was, Population Dynamics of Western Atlantic
Bluefin Tuna: Modeling the Impacts of Fishing using Differential Equations. The source was the
most useful because of the connections that was shown between population models and
mathematics. The reliability was judged to be high because of the authors Esther Bowen, Marie
Hoerner, and Cassie Kontur. The information stated was backed up by other sources and judged to
be accurate. Lastly the information displayed was up to date and on topic.
If this research task was to be redone, there are a few improvements that could be made. Firstly the
topic was a little broad if the topic was narrowed down more, a more informative research project
could have been created. Secondly, more time with a specialist in mathematics, and more help
specifically with differential equation and calculus would have been externally productive. The
mathematical aspect of the research project would have been a lot stronger with more/longer access
to math experts. For example an improvement of converting the differential equation to a function
that has the

“Aristotle’s Definition of the Tragic Hero and Irony in...
Classification and definition of tragedy are among many things widely disputed in the all too
equivocal realm of composition and literary studies. These erroneous concepts happen to be directly
correlated in Aristotelian theory which leads us to his definition of the tragic hero. Aristotle s
conceptualization of tragedyand all that it encompasses is widely revered and accepted; setting the
standard previously and contemporaneously. The interpretation of his definition of tragedy is
ambiguous, but generally states that tragedy should evoke pity and fear within the viewer for the
purpose of catharsis, or purgation of senses sequencing the climax of a tragedy. (Battin) This elicits
his definition of the tragic hero, which states that a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Brown) We must also consider that during that time period murder was sanctioned to a radically
different degree than today. Accordingly, his hamartia could very well be mistaken identity and
failed recognition which stimulates the viewer s sense of pity and causes him to be viewed
more as a victim of ironic fate . (Brown) Line 1118 marks the point of the play where Oedipus
comes to realization that his prophesy has indeed come true. It is at this point that he
experiences an anagnorisis discovering his hamartia. He acquired the throne due to his ability
to solve a riddle that proved to be impenetrable to any who had attempted to decipher it, due
exceptional logical reasoning capacity (ironic). Perhaps it was this same power of reason that
provoked him to believe that he could escape fate, inversely leading to his destruction. Oedipus
states Ah God!/ It was true!/ All the prophesies!/ Now,/ O Light, may I look on you for the last
time!/ I, Oedipus,/Oedipus, damned in his birth, in his marriage damned,/ Damned in the blood
he shed with his own hand! . (4.1118 1123) It was the acquisition of this throne that fulfilled the
remainder of prophesy. He realizes that he is the provocation of the plague which ravages his
(former) kingdom. Thereafter he concedes his anagnorisis: Apollo / He brought my sick, sick fate
upon me./ But the blinding hand was my own! (3.1286 288) He is conclusively a product of his

Innerspring Coil Mattress
If you are in the market to purchase a new mattress, there are many types currently available. Each
of these mattress types has its own attributes and qualities and can be a great benefit for people
with different body sizes, shapes and health conditions. Here are some of the more popular mattress
types available today:
Innerspring Coil Mattress This type of mattress is made of individual coiled springs, each in its own
fabric pocket. The springs are positioned in rows and work independently from each other. The coil
pockets are covered in a layer of latex, memory foam or other pillow top material and have a wide
range of firmness. Look for a mattress that has the most individual coils. An innerspring mattress is
good for someone with chronic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This mattress is popular because it conform to a person s specific body shape and relieves strain
on the body s pressure points. Additionally, memory foam absorbs movement so it is a good choice
when sleeping with a partner as the movement in one part of the mattress is not transferred to
another part of the mattress. This mattress is great for people with chronic backaches and joint and
circulation problems.
Air Mattress This mattress consists of multiple, air filled chambers instead of coils and is
covered with a layer of latex or memory foam. An air mattress is fully adjustable on each side for a
softer or firmer feel. Because of this adjustability, air mattresses have traditionally been prescribed
for people with spinal cord injuries who spend a lot of time in bed. This adjustability also makes an
air mattress a good choice for couples.
Getting a good night s sleep is extremely important to your health and the mattress that you chose
can be a critical factor to getting adequate rest. When you consider purchasing different mattresses,
try them out for 10 15 minutes each while you are in the store. Then chose the mattress that feels
the most comfortable to you. In that way you can be assured of getting a good night s sleep once

Hannah Mary Tabbs And The Disembodied Torso Analysis
Hannah Mary Tabbs and the Disembodied Torso is about a woman having a part in a heinous crime
that shakes the community and challenges the criminal justice system. Tabbs, also known by many
aliases, uses her knowledge of gender, race, and social constructions to defend herself and
manipulate people around her. This leads to getting away with murderor at least a contribution to
the coverup of a murder. Hannah Mary Tabbs defended herself by playing roles and abiding
societal rules in which to deceive the persons involved. Some people may consider Tabbs
unsuccessful in the pursuit of innocence considering she was sentenced to time in a prison, but in
reality, she was very successful. The central crimein Hannah Mary Tabbs and the Disembodied
Torso is first discovered by the public when Silas Hibbs, a resident of Eddington, Pennsylvania,
sees something out of the ordinary near a fellow resident s pond. Upon a closer look, the
package held the headless, limbless torso of a man . With later examination of the torso, it is
determined that death of the nameless victim was that of a violent crime and not having to do with
the medical and training area in Philadelphia. This resolution is brought about by the amateur
nature of the cuts that separated the head and limbs. To find other clues to the crime, the area
nearby the crime scene is searched and reveals a shawl strap and a piece of calico fabric. Further
searches were conducted but resulted in nothing. For some time, the racial

The United States Post Office began in 1775, with the intention to create a bond across the nation
and allow every American access to affordable mail delivery service. (S1) Over the years there
have been many changes in the way people communicate. Gone are the days when the only way to
send a written message was through the mail. Technology has given us many new ways to keep in
touch with each other from email, to text messages, and even instant messages. Unfortunately, for
the United State Postal Service, these advancements, which have little to no cost, mean a great loss
in revenue for them. Since 2006 the Post Office has not turned a profit, which leads many people to
question whether their services should be privatized. (S2) The... Show more content on

As of 2010 the Postal Service was nearly $12 billion dollars in debt to the treasury. The amount
of mail the Postal Service delivers dropped by twenty percent between 2006 and 2010, despite
the fact that they are responsible for delivering forty percent of the total mail in the world.
Approximately eighty percent of the budget of the Postal Service goes towards employee
benefits and salaries, and a large portion of that is retirement benefits. (S7) When compared to
other members of the government workforce, postal employees have the greatest benefits and
contribute the least to these benefits. (S2) When looking at the costs associated with the
employees and benefits, a lot of people believe the services provided by the Postal Service could
be handled a lot more effectively and cost efficient by a private company, who wouldn t be held

over the years to create efficiencies to reduce costs. In the 90 s mail was sorted by hand into
pigeonholes. Back then it would take eighteen people to process around 5000 pieces of mail an

Radicalism in Mary Wollstonecraft’s Writing
Radicalism in Mary Wollstonecraft s Writing
(Which author is more radical for her day?) In the years of the late 1700 s and early 1800 s
women s rights were unheard of. Women didn t get a higher education like the men did. They
would mostly learn about etiquette and how to cook and clean. The father of the daughter would
choose who she would marry, it would always be based on money, and familytithes. Women were
treated as property and she was owned by her father and mother tells she was wedded, and then
her husband would own her. But in theses years is when women started to more or less rebel and
come out with new and radical ideas. In the article by Jone Lewis she states, Mary Wollstonecraft
has been called the first feminist or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the article titled, Family Structure in Colonial times, the author states, Now, all along, there was
the occasional crack in the system, granting that a woman could take care of children in the tender
years three or seven years old. This meant that children were really never raised in a great way and
they were soon sent to work in factories, leaving the mother heartbroken.
The last reason Wollstonecraft s writing is more radical is the fact that she wants everyone to
give women a chance; if it doesn t work she won t mind taking the blame. In her essay she states,
Let me become more chaste and modest, and if women do not grow wiser in the same ratio it
will be clear that they have weaker understandings. She wasn t positive that women would succeed
with more rights, but she still was fighting for a chance for them. It was a huge step to put herself
on the line because if women had begun to get rights, but it was in fact true that they weren t as
smart, the blame would be put on her. In the article Colonial Times, the author states, During the
18th century, the women s role and work was extremely difficult, exhausting, and society was
unappreciative. This proves that women worked hard from the start and if they could just get some
more education they could be as successful as men.
Overall, Mary Wollstonecraft put a huge impact on women s rights in the early 1800 s,

Why Is Sugar Shack Johnny Novak
SUGAR SHACK JOHNNY NOVAK JACK by Craig Fleming Joe Novak, aka Sugar Shack
Johnny, aka Jack, was a complicated man, who lived a life that was in many ways, larger than
life. He was a tough, intelligent, compassionate, and inarguably fearless man who was incredibly
comfortable in his own skin. He is missed and remembered with a lot of love. Joe Novak had
bigger balls than anyone I have ever known, and those big balls were securely connected to his big
heart. I am still intrigued, to this day, by the harmony, and conflict, between his passion for
knowledge, empathy, and brawn it was a very rare combination of qualities, with the all the raw
emotion and complexity of a classical music composition. Joe essentially conducted pool... Show

his friend. I can still hear his grizzly bear voice, and his laughter, in my heart, and in the
unsettled corners of my mind. Sugar Shack Johnny, as he was known in the pool halls of days
gone by, had a rare combination of heart, muscle, and mind. He knew about hard roads and hard
rides, and he loved life. Novak was a fearless tush hog. Even more impressively, Sugar Shack
would not carry a gun, although many of his enemies did carry guns. It is impossible for me to
perceive him as his adversaries did, way back then. He may have been unfairly stereotyped in the
darkness of the countless pool halls he undoubtedly knew inside and out, because he had a
fearless confidence about him, borne of circumstance and an irrepressible will to succeed. But
most remarkably, there was a timeless light that emanated from his charisma. He was not a man
who went looking for trouble, but if trouble came looking for him or someone he loved, I would
always put my money on Joe, even when he was 75 years old. Recently, in spite of his reputation, I

Film Analysis Of Vivian
In the film, Wit, Starring Emma Thompson, Christopher Lloyd, Eileen Atkins, Audra McDonald,
Jonathan M. Woodward, Harold Pinter directed by Mike Nichols we initially begin the film with
a scene where Dr. Harvey Kelekian diagnoses Professor Bearing, also known as Vivian, that
ultimately sets up the tone for the rest of the film. With only knowing some logistics of the film to
begin we may think that the film will come to tell a story of survival, rather, the movie comes to
deconstruct the idea the typical tale of staying strong through cancer treatment, overcoming the
odds, and surviving. The screenplay and the director otherwise allude to the fact that the main
theme or message trying to get across is the significance trying to reconstruct the individual,
Vivian, yet not through any sort of chemotherapy, harsh cancer treatment, or any sort of physical
treatment to the body. The manner that the film portrays a story of reconstruction is through the
acceptance of one self s debilities and weaknesses, exposing oneself and their vulnerabilities and
ultimately letting go of your control of those vulnerabilities in the process. Overall, the character
is healed in such way of their internal soul, but still hinder the devastating diagnosis of cancer.
With research on Vivian full on its way, we begin to see clearly how the spirit of Vivian
diminishes. The physicians ask her how are you feeling today? so often that it becomes that it loses

Fate And Free Will In Oedipus The King
Fate and Free Will in Sophocles Oedipus the King Introduction
The events in Oedipus the King, written by Sophocles, show an underlying relationship of man s
free will existing within the cosmic order or fate which the Greeks believed guided the universe
in a harmonious purpose. Man was free to choose and was ultimately held responsible for his own
actions. Both the concept of fate and free will played an integral part in Oedipus destruction.
Although he was a victim of fate, he was not controlled by it. Oedipus was destined from birth to
someday marry his mother and to murder his father. This prophecy, as warned by the oracle of
Apollo at Delphi was unconditional and inevitably would come to pass, no matter what he may
have done to avoid it. His past actions were determined by fate, but what he did in Thebes; he did
so of his own will.
In Sophocles Oedipus the King, the themes of fate and free will are very strong throughout the
play. Only one, however, brought about Oedipus downfall and death. Both points could be
argued to great effect. In ancient Greece, fate was considered to be a rudimentary part of daily life.
Every aspect of life depended and was based upon fate (Nagle 100). It is common belief to assume

Success In George Gladwell s Individualistic Means Of Success
Success has long been viewed as a result of an individual s determination and in some cases, innate
talent. Said individual would generally be of a less fortunate background and rise to triumph with
seemingly no assistance from others. Conversely, Gladwell argues against this individualistic
approach to analyzing success. He instead argues that It is only by asking where they [successful
people] are from that we can unravel the logic behind who succeeds and who doesn t. Gladwell
looks deeper into the environment from which the successful spring and, using logic, thoroughly
explains every aspect that lead to their success.
Texting has revolutionized the way humans communicate in more ways than merely increasing the
speed at which they transmit information. For Instance, Common texting abbreviations such as lol
or rotfl have become ingrained into the culture of many first world countries and are now used in
everyday conversation. Though the individual speaking or typing these abbreviations is not actually
transmitting recognizable English words, there is a mutual understanding between the ones
communicating of what each series of letters means. The meanings of the words are not obscured in
any way.
When biologists examine the ecology of an organism, they observe not only that organism s traits
but also its environment. The biologist looks at things such as the surrounding organisms and how
much of a threat they are to an organism s survival, the accessibility of resources to the organism.
In short, the biologist looks at the organism s environment and sees what advantages it has had that
allowed it to survive, and in some cases, thrive. This is similar to the way in which Malcolm
Gladwell describes Accumulative Advantage . When Gladwell analyzes a successful persons rise to
triumph, he takes into account the person s environment. He looks at things such as birth date,
social attitude, economic trends, and genealogy to try to piece together what opportunities could
have been an advantage and what advantages could have accumulated (hence the term
Accumulative Advantage) in a person s life to propel them to their current successful status.

These factors create certain expectations and requirements for organizations, which in turns
determine the organization s direction and strategy. Whereas internal environment is made up of
several internal subsystems. Internal subsystems work together systematically and drive the
organization in the direction which is in conformity to external environment demands; thereby
making the organization effective and a good fit with external environment. (McShane amp; Steen,
2012, p.6)
Open systems perspective also suggests that organization s efficiency is equally important to it s
success. An organization is efficient when it produces more outputs with less then normally
required inputs, and when it s internal subsystems have good coordination among them. But this is
difficult in reality. Because there are some negative elements in subsystems such as
miscommunication and hostilities, which undermine efficiency of organization. These elements
cannot be eliminated as subsystems of an organization are also open systems and organization gets

I enjoy the forest. I liked walking through the forest and taking in the sunlight, the oxygen, the

getting out more often and seeing the sights that the world can offer more often, this feels like a

Well, it still is, but the once completely solid rock has a very unusual gash in it. The path that I
usually take to and from this place is coated in a slime, and that same slime runs back up into the

seems? As I attempt to identify the substance, small, damaged parts of the rock begin to fall apart.
This effect then snowballs, and eventually larger pieces of the rock fall off due to structural
instability, revealing a hole in the ground, brimming with the sludge. Out of this pit comes a
very sharp, clawed, black hand, and directly above the arm flails a scythe like appendage. Such a

Tomorrow When The War Began By John Marsden
In Tomorrow When the War Began, John Marsden uses many narrative features to make Ellie s
World real for readers. Setting and themes are both vital to the plot, as well as the overall
atmosphere of the story.
The main themes in Tomorrow When the War Began are ambiguity, friendships, and personal
growth. These themes both make the story relatable to readers, and forces them out of their comfort
zone. The setting of the novel, at least for Australian readers, is incredibly familiar and real.
The places and culture John Marsden describes is uniquely Australian. Australian readers would
usually have trouble seeing a war situation as real and relating it to their own lives, but with
Australia as the backdrop, this book makes it much easier to envision. The setting is very
important to the plot of Tomorrow When The War Began, as the bush that surrounds Wirrawee
provides a hideout for Ellie and her friends when they are invaded. John Marsden describes the
setting of the book with immense, realistic detail, so much so that the scenery becomes it s own
character that plays vital roles in many key scenes of the book, such as the blowing up of the
bridge, or the camping trips into Hell. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Offer buyback is advanced by numerous investigates placing a mixture of inspiration theory and

the most important musical genre in America by the New York Times (Strauss 1999: 28), and has

so we recorded 0.8 L/min VeSTDP for subject 1 and 10 L/min VeSTDP for subject 2 but that
might be because we allowed gas to escape when we were using the equipment incorrectly, which
means that VeSTDP results might be inaccurate. Also during the experiment, there was a little

To concluded, the sodium nitrate was more soluble than the sodium chloride because it took 8.7
grams to saturate the sodium nitrate, while it took only 2.9 grams to saturate the sodium chloride.
Conclusion: 1.) Are different substances equally soluble in water? Explain.
Different substances are not equally soluble in water because each substance dissolves differently.
For example the sodium nitrate took longer to dissolve than the sodium chloride because they are
different substances. Some substances also may not dissolve at all in water. Also, substances have
all different types of shapes and sizes, and larger substances may take longer to dissolve than
smaller ones.
2.) How could you use the property of solubility to help identify the type of matter?
There are many ways that one can use the property of solubility to help identify the type of
matter. One way is to put the matter into water and shake it to see if it is soluble. Another way is
to observe the matter and see the different shapes and colors that it has. Seeing if it is soluble in
water and by observing the colors and shape one can narrow down what type of matter it is.
3.) What were two likely sources of error for this experiment?
There are many likely sources of error that could have occured while doing this experiment. One
error was that some of the substances were spilled on the table. The substances were left on the
table throughout the experiment and it was never cleaned up.

Why the World Needs Heroes
Sister Helen Prejean is a Roman Catholic nun that is member of the Congregation of St. Joseph,
as well as an advocate for the abolition of the death penalty. Prejean is not only a hero for the
accused that have no voice, but many members of the catholic church look up to her as an
inspiration for serving her faith as well as being a genuine well hearted person. Prejean is a hero
because she doesn t seek publicity in her acts. She truly wants to help people no matter of the
severity of their past actions. For many years, Prejean has devoted her life to serve her faith that
millions of people share. She sacirficed Marriage, money, children, and time to help and comfort
people in need like the ones on death row. The important thing is that when you come to
understand something you act on it, no matter how small that act is. Eventually it will take you
where you need to go (Sister Helen Prejean). Pejean naturally brings out missing qualities in her
supporters and by doing so, it causes a ripple effect that causes more and more people to catch the
contagious kindness and pass it on generation to generation, race to race, and gender to

An Analysis of Toy Story Essay
Toy Story Analysis
Toy Story is the groundbreaking 1995 motion picture developed by Disney and Pixar and
directed by John Lasseter. The film was so revolutionary not only because it was the first feature
length animation to be created completely by CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) but also, also
the film was more rounded in all respects. The characters not only looked more sophisticated and
three dimensional but their personalities were also more human and fewer cartoons like. The film
uses a constructed text in order to put across a theme of two very different characters learning to
work together beyond their rivalries to rise above a common enemy and work towards a common
goal. The film uses characters and imagery very cleverly to ... Show more content on

Woody quickly becomes jealous and insecure with the arrival of Buzz and this turns him into a
bully. Not the characteristics expected of a Disney hero. This is shown in the way Woody
constantly ridicules Buzz making fun of his name and teases him maliciously about the fact he
thinks he actually is a space ranger. This brings us on to Buzz. He is super confidant and suffers
from delusions of grandeur. However although he may be a little irritating he is still likeable,
cheerful and helpful. He has too much confidence in own abilities. This is why when he sees the
advertisement for Buzz Lightyear Action figures he completely loses his will to live and is unable
to do anything. This is another theme that self belief has a reflection in what you are able to do
as they both find out at the end in that when they have confidence in themselves they are able to
rise above seemingly insurmountable obstacles in rescuing Buzz and getting back to Andy.
Another theme is that of appearances being deceptive. Woody and Buzz immediately consider
the toys in Sid s room as evil. The audience also get this feeling. Not only do they look disturbing
but also they are also associated with Sid who is the main evil character. Despite their initial fears,
Woody and Buzz are soon convinced that Sid s warped creations are also prisoners and are in fact
friends. It turns out that without the intervention of Sid s toys Sid would

Dale Russakoff
The Prize was excellently written by Dale Russakoff. In this short non fiction, she describes the
current state of Newark, New Jersey s public education system. Newark has one of the poorest
education systems and because of that students have experienced failure upon failure. Many have
worked to improve this system including philanthropist, administrators, teachers, and even members
of the community. Through The Prize, she shows the different perspectives of individuals who
have these titles and what they did or believe they can do in order to improve the system. It is very
interesting how so many people have different ideas, though they are connected in the same system,
and no one seems to listen to the other, which shows the lack of communication... Show more

For example, Princess Williams was a Newark native kindergarten teacher who cared about where
her students were going and how they would get there. She addressed each student s needs
individually. Teachers who thought of educationin the same ways as she did believed If you want
to change public education, you have to attack the district buildings (47). Many believed that the
governor, Chris Christie, wanted to completely change Newark s education system by bringing
new people and new ways in, but it actually would have been much easier to fix the problems at
hand. For example, they could have educated teaches to be better, implemented new resources
into district schools instead of creating more charter schools, or hire more counselors to deal with
grieving children. It is easy to see that all reformers had a common educational goal for Newark,
but they were different in how they handled it. Reformers like Princess Williams worked from the
bottom up. She started change by showing what worked better in her classroom at first and then
transferred those strategies to a larger context such as the Avon BRICK School. Reformers like
Mark Zuckerberg worked from the top down. He started by investing in the politicians who would
change the school system at large by changing administrators first, then teachers, and then continued
work from the core of the problem. By the

Essay about J.R.R Tolkien and The Fellowship of the Ring
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, better known as J.R.R. Tolkien, was born on January third 1892 in
Bloemfontein South Africa and was the son of Arthur and Mabel Suffield Tolkien. After his
father s death in 1896 Tolkien s mother moved herself and her two children, J.R.R (at the time
called Ronald) and his younger brother Hilary to Sarehole near Birmingham. When Tolkien was
twelve his mother died and he and his brother were sent to live with one of their relatives when a
Catholic priest became their legal guardian. (biography.com J.R.R. Tolkien Linguist and Author) At
the onset of World War 1 Tolkien did not immediately rush to join the war. He instead remained at
Oxford and received his degree in 1915. During the time leading up to his... Show more content on

In 1920 Tolkien was appointed to the position of Associate Professor in English Language at the
University of Leeds. At the university Tolkien cooperated with E.V. Gordon to publish the Songs
for the Philologists. Tolkien in 1937 published The Hobbit and in 1954 published what would be
his most famous works, The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien s wife died in 1971 and himself died two
years later in 1973 at the age of 81 and had four children. (Doughan).had many influences on his
writing one among these is the literature of the old Norse. (Clair) This influence is visible in
almost all aspects of the stories that Tolkien tells of Middle Earth. The Hobbits, for example, are
Tolkien s unique contribution to the world of Middle Earth. However the Hobbits are clearly
based off of the Icelanders in the Njal s Saga. (Clair) There are many similarities between these
two groups of peoples in the two stories. Many of these similarities are in habit. The Icelanders
much like the Hobbits were fond of food and often were very proud of their ancestry and their
belief in hospitality. Another similarity between the two groups is their ostentatious methods of
dress. Both groups dressed very ornately and very colorfully. (Clair) Tolkien s elves also show
many similarities to the elves of Northern literature. Both elves have histories of healing and of
being smiths. (Clair) Aside from the influence of Norse Literature Tolkien was also influenced by
his Catholic faith and

Impact Of The On Uk s Financial Stability Essay
There is no doubt that the brexit will have a significant impact on UK, especially for the financial
system. In the following few days after referendum, the financial market shows the immediate
impact of brexit , the sterling exchange rate index sharply fallen by 9%, the bank equity price had
fallen by 20%, the ten year UK government bond yield had fallen by 52 basis point. In its latest

Christmas Child Reflection
Operation Christmas Child has been a part of more than half of my life. I started volunteering
when I was eight at a family friend s church. However, the only reason I volunteered was because
I needed community service hours for school. I always secretly wished to be put in the packing
group since it had the least leadershiprole because I never wanted to be a leader. What I did not
know at that time, was those years before high schoolwere preparing me for what God had in store
for me. When I started my freshman year in high school, I still had to do community service. This
led me to continue doing Operation Christmas Child. I was now volunteering at my school,
Trinity Christian High School along with my athletic director, Mr. Fitz, who was in charge of
running it. Even though this was taking place somewhere else, I expected that I would still be
able to have a role not involving leadership. This was not the case because Mr. Fitz had
something else in store for me. He assigned to me the role of the log sheets, which included
talking to people, writing down the amount of boxes were dropped off, and making sure the logs
were neat and correct. I was very nervous to take on this role, so much that I would start to shake
causing me to get anxious and start sweating right before I would have to talk to someone. There
was a routine I went through every time. Hello, have you dropped boxes off here before? I asked.
Yes, I have a school teacher said. Great, what church or

Being a freshman requires so much work and so much effort because you are new to the environment, it is a new life situation because you are not considered a kid anymore you are more considered as a teenager with responsibilities. There are many things a freshman has to do than an eight grader. Such as completing every single subject for every single class, also taking responsibilities of your actions. In High School you don t come here to play any games because it is your life after these 4 years are over. In eight grade, lets say you still don t have to take many responsibilities as a freshman. Sarah Kane Crave Analyse My over arching idea for my production of Crave is that I want to give the play some context while also maintaining the theme that these characters could represent anyone. The reason I want to give the play some background is because on my first read of the play, before I read the Saunders article in which Sarah Kane talks about the relationships between C and A, and B and M, a lot of the themes of the play were lost on me because I was so focused on trying to figure out what was going on. I know Sarah Kane didn t want the characters to get stuck in specific categories, but by establishing relationships between the characters I think the audience will be able to focus more on what the characters are saying and less on trying to discern what... The tone and color of the fill lights changes slightly throughout the show, following the color changes of the cyclorama. The cyc is my central design element for the show. When I read Crave, it seemed to me that the play was divided into different emotional sections, and I want to use the cyc to reflect that. When the lights come up after the characters enter, I want the cyc to be a medium dark purple, which I think helps give the feeling that the play is taking place in the city, which is what I gathered from the dialogue. The purple should be dark enough that it gives the audience a sense of unease, as each of the characters relate depressing tales and talk heatedly with one another. When A begins his speech, I want the cyc to fade into a bright amber that assaults the audience s eyes when it first appears. This symbolizes how upon first glance, A s speech appears happy and innocent, which the color yellow is associated with, but that yellow is tainted with something darker and sinister, making it amber. Then, when C mentions being raped, I want the cyc to fade to a scarlet red, because this I think this marked the transition to the most violent part of the play. Then when C says, No one can hate me more than myself , I want the cyc to start transitioning to a medium blue. As the play continues, I want that blue to get continually darker, symbolizing the characters sinking into despair. When B says Kill me , I want the cyc and all of the lights to fade away, implying that the characters have passed away. • 5. The Novel The Expedition Of Humphry Clinker By Tobias... The epistolary novel, a novel that is written entirely in the form of letters, first gained traction in the early 18th century. Two epistolary novels that encapsulated this style very well were Dangerous Liaisons and Evelina. The similarities are also not solely in terms of writing style. Both of these authors use the letters that their characters write as a method of deception to obtain what they truly desire, even if it does not appear as such. Despite the divide that separates them in genre, both Burney and Laclos exhibited this style very well as the authors used these letters to convey their characters goals, intentions, and desires to the reader in their works. We will first examine the novel by Pierre Ambrose Laclos, Dangerous Liaisons. There are a few reasons why Laclos letters provided a sense of importance stylistically. Dangerous Liaisons was not a typical work, as it was the first French epistolary novel to use more than one perspective (Brittanica). As we know The Expedition of Humphry Clinker by Tobias Smollett was published in 1771, had multiple perspectives displayed through letters, but Smollett was a Scot, and his work was set in both England and Scotland. His work was never able to gain much popularity in France. French literature in general did not implore this style; they usually followed a more traditionalist model when it came to the novel. He was also the first French author to employ letters that were not designed solely for reporting events. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Explication Of The Raven By Edgar Allan Poe Holly Hecox Perdue English Composition II 28 February 2016 Explication: The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe Through the use of an un named narrator in his poem entitled The Raven , Poe darkly conveys feeling understood by many: hopelessness, lost love, and death. The poem follows the un named narrator, as he reflects on, as well as struggles with, the realization of his lost love, Lenore. Like many, he tries to detract his overwhelming feelings for Lenore by investing his time in studying books. Despite his greatest efforts, he is unsuccessful. Much to his surprise, his solitude is interrupted by an unanticipated visitor. Throughout the poem, Poe uses imagery, tone, symbolism, and rhyme as a means of conveying his overall themes of undying devotion and lingering grief. Around midnight on a bleak December night, a weak and weary man is reading while nearly napping . He reads as a means of nullifying the sorrow he feels for the lost Lenore . Suddenly, he is jolted alert by some visitor tapping at his chamber door. The lonely man tells himself Tis some visitor and nothing more , but as he widely opens his chamber door, he finds darkness there and nothing more . Staring into the darkness, the narrator dreams about the impossibilities of his lost love, and even whispers her name; Lenore . Upon returning to his chamber, a stronger tapping, at the window, is catching his attention. Courageously exploring the noise, he is amused and relieved when a raven flies in from ... • 8. Bolshevik Collectivism In Mayakovsky A work of art is so often, from its inception, a personal creation; and something which is created from the artist s perception often inevitably becomes a meditation on his inescapable selfhood. Following the revolution, Russia was marked by a burgeoning utilitarian ideal and a collectivism which proclaimed, one for all. The 1920s Bolshevik leadership sought to reemploy the avant garde artists with the aims of instilling the masses with a proletarian mentality. A conflict between the individual identity and the Bolshevik collectivism threatened to compromise the artist s values and unique aesthetic aims. A prime example of this internal discord is illustrated in the works of Mayakovsky. At the outset of post revolutionary Russia, the poet voices his annoyance at having to make propagandistic posters in his 1920 poem An Extraordinary Adventure . Ultimately, however, he discovers the merits of this seemingly uninspiring task by the end of the poem. These agitprop posters were one of the most ubiquitous resources the government used to educate and culture the masses. At this point the Bolsheviks were convinced that the values inherent in science and the arts were congenial to the principles of socialism. Culture was to be a helpmate in the building of socialism (Kenez, 65). The posters were extremely effective, for they spoke even to the illiterate. Their content educated, while their modernist style cultured. Several years later, however, Mayakovsky seems to revert ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This is because our average deviation for Keq was only 6.8 which comes out to be a 6. percent error. Due to our deviation being so low it indicates that the equilibrium constantis indeed a constant . Questions: In the lab it uses the definition equilibrium constant, what is meant when equilibrium constant is referred to, is the ratio of the molar concentrations of the reactants and products for the reaction. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This calibration curve then created an equation that allowed for the unknown concentration of the FeSCN2+ ions to be determined. When you use a spectrophotometer you should not set the wavelength of light to be the same color of the solution. This is because if you set the wavelength to be the same color of the solution then no light will be absorbed. The reason why no light will be absorbed is because the color you see is the wavelength of light that is being reflected so you must set the wavelength to be the complementary color. The wavelength of light that was chosen for the lab was 450nm which coincides with a very dark blue color. The reason why choosing a dark blue makes the most sense for this experiment is because the color of the FeSCN2+ ion was blood red. Spectrophotometers are quite precise instruments allowing for five significant figures to be obtained. The major source of error in this lab is how small the concentration of the reagents are. Because a spectrophotometer is very useful it can be used in more than one lab. It can be used in a lab to determine the rate law for a color fading reaction. It can also be used in a lab focused on the visual spectrum, where one can determine how much light different colors absorb at different wavelengths. In the years of the late 1700 s and early 1800 s women s rights were unheard of. Women didn t get a higher education like the men did. They would mostly learn about etiquette and how to cook and clean. The father of the daughter would choose who she would marry, it would always be based on money, and familytithes. Women were treated as property and she was owned by her father and mother tells she was wedded, and then her husband would own her. This meant that children were really never raised in a great way and they were soon sent to work in factories, leaving the mother heartbroken. The last reason Wollstonecraft s writing is more radical is the fact that she wants everyone to give women a chance; if it doesn t work she won t mind taking the blame. In her essay she states, Let me become more chaste and modest, and if women do not grow wiser in the same ratio it will be clear that they have weaker understandings. She wasn t positive that women would succeed with more rights, but she still was fighting for a chance for them. It was a huge step to put herself on the line because if women had begun to get rights, but it was in fact true that they weren t as smart, the blame would be put on her. In the article Colonial Times, the author states, During the 18th century, the women s role and work was extremely difficult, exhausting, and society was unappreciative. This proves that women worked hard from the start and if they could just get some more education they could be as successful as men. Why Is Sugar Shack Johnny Novak SUGAR SHACK JOHNNY NOVAK JACK by Craig Fleming Joe Novak, aka Sugar Shack Johnny, aka Jack, was a complicated man, who lived a life that was in many ways, larger than life. With only knowing some logistics of the film to begin we may think that the film will come to tell a story of survival, rather, the movie comes to deconstruct the idea the typical tale of staying strong through cancer treatment, overcoming the odds, and surviving. The screenplay and the director otherwise allude to the fact that the main theme or message trying to get across is the significance trying to reconstruct the individual, Vivian, yet not through any sort of chemotherapy, harsh cancer treatment, or any sort of physical treatment to the body. The manner that the film portrays a story of reconstruction is through the acceptance of one self s debilities and weaknesses, exposing oneself and their vulnerabilities and ultimately letting go of your control of those vulnerabilities in the process. Overall, the character is healed in such way of their internal soul, but still hinder the devastating diagnosis of cancer. Fate And Free Will In Oedipus The King Fate and Free Will in Sophocles Oedipus the King Introduction The events in Oedipus the King, written by Sophocles, show an underlying relationship of man s free will existing within the cosmic order or fate which the Greeks believed guided the universe in a harmonious purpose. Man was free to choose and was ultimately held responsible for his own actions. Both the concept of fate and free will played an integral part in Oedipus destruction. Although he was a victim of fate, he was not controlled by it. Oedipus was destined from birth to someday marry his mother and to murder his father. This prophecy, as warned by the oracle of Apollo at Delphi was unconditional and inevitably would come to pass, no matter what he may have done to avoid it. His past actions were determined by fate, but what he did in Thebes; he did so of his own will. In Sophocles Oedipus the King, the themes of fate and free will are very strong throughout the play. Only one, however, brought about Oedipus downfall and death. Both points could be argued to great effect. In ancient Greece, fate was considered to be a rudimentary part of daily life. • 28. Success In George Gladwell s Individualistic Means Of Success Success has long been viewed as a result of an individual s determination and in some cases, innate talent. Said individual would generally be of a less fortunate background and rise to triumph with seemingly no assistance from others. Conversely, Gladwell argues against this individualistic approach to analyzing success. He instead argues that It is only by asking where they [successful people] are from that we can unravel the logic behind who succeeds and who doesn t. Gladwell looks deeper into the environment from which the successful spring and, using logic, thoroughly explains every aspect that lead to their success. Texting has revolutionized the way humans communicate in more ways than merely increasing the speed at which they transmit information. For Instance, Common texting abbreviations such as lol or rotfl have become ingrained into the culture of many first world countries and are now used in everyday conversation. Though the individual speaking or typing these abbreviations is not actually transmitting recognizable English words, there is a mutual understanding between the ones communicating of what each series of letters means. The meanings of the words are not obscured in any way. When biologists examine the ecology of an organism, they observe not only that organism s traits but also its environment. The biologist looks at things such as the surrounding organisms and how much of a threat they are to an organism s survival, the accessibility of resources to the organism. In short, the biologist looks at the organism s environment and sees what advantages it has had that allowed it to survive, and in some cases, thrive. This is similar to the way in which Malcolm Gladwell describes Accumulative Advantage . When Gladwell analyzes a successful persons rise to triumph, he takes into account the person s environment. He looks at things such as birth date, social attitude, economic trends, and genealogy to try to piece together what opportunities could have been an advantage and what advantages could have accumulated (hence the term Accumulative Advantage) in a person s life to propel them to their current successful status. For example the sodium nitrate took longer to dissolve than the sodium chloride because they are different substances. Some substances also may not dissolve at all in water. Also, substances have all different types of shapes and sizes, and larger substances may take longer to dissolve than smaller ones. 2.) She addressed each student s needs individually. Teachers who thought of educationin the same ways as she did believed If you want to change public education, you have to attack the district buildings (47). Many believed that the governor, Chris Christie, wanted to completely change Newark s education system by bringing new people and new ways in, but it actually would have been much easier to fix the problems at hand. For example, they could have educated teaches to be better, implemented new resources into district schools instead of creating more charter schools, or hire more counselors to deal with grieving children. It is easy to see that all reformers had a common educational goal for Newark, but they were different in how they handled it. Reformers like Princess Williams worked from the bottom up. She started change by showing what worked better in her classroom at first and then transferred those strategies to a larger context such as the Avon BRICK School. Reformers like Mark Zuckerberg worked from the top down. He started by investing in the politicians who would change the school system at large by changing administrators first, then teachers, and then continued work from the core of the problem. (Clair) This influence is visible in almost all aspects of the stories that Tolkien tells of Middle Earth. The Hobbits, for example, are Tolkien s unique contribution to the world of Middle Earth. However the Hobbits are clearly based off of the Icelanders in the Njal s Saga. (Clair) There are many similarities between these two groups of peoples in the two stories. Many of these similarities are in habit. The Icelanders much like the Hobbits were fond of food and often were very proud of their ancestry and their belief in hospitality. • 44. Christmas Child Reflection Operation Christmas Child has been a part of more than half of my life. I started volunteering when I was eight at a family friend s church. However, the only reason I volunteered was because I needed community service hours for school. I always secretly wished to be put in the packing group since it had the least leadershiprole because I never wanted to be a leader. What I did not know at that time, was those years before high schoolwere preparing me for what God had in store for me. When I started my freshman year in high school, I still had to do community service. This led me to continue doing Operation Christmas Child. I was now volunteering at my school, Trinity Christian High School along with my athletic director, Mr. Fitz, who was in charge of running it.
