France s Old Regime was plagued with problems. During the Enlightenment, these problems were
highlighted and highly criticized. Enlightenment thinkers called for people to start thinking for
themselves, and to break off the chains of thought that oppressed them. They did not, however, call
for revolution, nor were they necessarily pro democracy. What they were interested in were
practical reforms. In a system as broken as the Old Regime was, even the most practical of changes
could seem revolutionary. Diderot and Turgot were two Enlightenment thinkers whose works

Every choice, every action and every decision we make has a consequence. A couple weeks ago, I
read two speeches by the 16th president, who served two terms, and an American politician, who is
the brother of John F. Kennedy. The first speech I read was delivered on April 4th in 1968 by
Robert F. Kennedy. He spoke about the Assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. that occured in
Memphis, Tennessee that same night. The second one was Abraham Lincolns Sencond Inaugural
Address. Kennedy s speech occured after Martin Luther King s Assassination and Lincoln s
happened after he was elected president for a second term. In Robert F. Kennedy s speech, he
mentions race, hatred and the lack of compassion we have for one another. Although, in Abraham
Lincoln s speech, he mentions the tragedy of the American Civil War, the distribution of slaves, and
God. Robert F. Kennedy s speech was intended to bring the nation together as a whole instead of
being sepearated by race. Also, Kennedy used this speech to mention that one of his family
members were killed by a white man, in order to empathize with everyone who was affected by the
news of Dr. King s assassination. His speech included:
those of you who are black [...] filled with hatred and mistrust of the injustice of such an act,
against all white people [...] feel in my own heart the same kind of feeling. (Kennedy, 1968)
Robert F. Kennedy tried his hardest to unite people with this speech about the Assassination of
Martin Luther King Jr. He wanted every American, whether they are black, white, hispanic or
middle eastern, to acknowledge the lack of compassion, love and unity in our nation. Robert F.
Kennedy started his speech by informing everyone that Martin Luther King Jr. was shot in
Memphis, Tennessee on April 4, 1968. He continued talking about how Martin Luther King
dedicated his life to love and justice between fellow human beings . Kennedy then asked everyone
in the crowd what kind of nation they were and what direction they want to move in. In Robert F.
Kennedy s speech he said:
black people amongst blacks, and white amongst whites, filled with hatred toward another. [...] with
