A Review of the Effects of Steroid Hormones and Neuropeptides on Social Emotional Behavior
Bos, Peter A., Panksepp, Jaak, BluthГ©, Rose Marie, van Honk, Jack (2011). Acute effects of
steroid hormones and neuropeptides on human social emotional behavior: A review of single
administration studies. Frontiers in Neuroendocrinology 33 (2012) 17 35.
1. Introduction/Background Information The discovery of hormones and their function has been
relatively recent. The term was first coined by Professor Earnest Starling in 1905. He derived the
word from the Greek meaning to arouse or excite. However, the idea of the role hormones could be
traced back as far as ancient Greece. Though Hippocrates theory on humors has been refuted, the ...

The neuro developmental effects of these chemicals are comparatively well known, while their
impact on human conduct has yet to be fully comprehended.
2. Goals of the study The main goal of this study was to review all of the placebo controlled single
hormone administration studies addressing human social emotional behavior, involving the
peptides oxytocin and vasopressin, and the steroids testosterone and estradiol. This research gives
insight into the underlying neural mechanisms and also demonstrates substantial hormonal control
over human behavior. After reviewing and discussing the placebo controlled studies, they proposed
a theoretical model that synthesized detailed knowledge of neuroendocrinology of social emotional
behavior in animals, as well as the recently gained data on humans. The study of emotional and
behavioral disorders have become more popular in the last twenty years. Characteristics of these
irregularities include: learning disabilities that are not explainable by either sensory, health, or
intellectual factors; persistently inappropriate feelings and conduct; and/or chronic unhappiness or
depression (gadoe.org). The authors of this study thoroughly analyzed the underlying neural
mechanisms of supplemental hormones and how they affect participants as opposed to using a
placebo. Research into human behavior as it relates to neuroendocrinology will be crucial to future
generations and their interrelations.

The Glass Menagerie Manipulation
How many people from the ages of 18 34 still live with their parents? Well, on average, about
30.3% of those people still live with their parents, but the reasons as to why are unknown. In the
play, The Glass Menagerie, Tom and Laura Wingfield are between the ages of 18 34 and they still
live with their mom, Amanda. Now their reasons why they both still live with her are clearly
displayed in this play. All three familymembers show eager signs to escape from each other but
some sort of physiological and manipulative tornado of emotions is holding them all back. Some
might call Amanda crazy, but what is power without a little bit of irrational thinking and disguised
manipulation? Although Laura may display her own robust qualities, they cannot match Amanda s
steady flow of persuasive strength because she is manipulative, extremely emotional, and is a hard
working mother. Throughout the play, Amanda persistently demonstrates controlling power. Before
Laura s gentleman caller arrives, Amanda and Laura are arguing about Laura s appearance. Amanda
says, To be painfully honest, your chest is flat, (Williams 70). Amanda directly... Show more content

Introduction to Economic System
What is system?
System (from Latin systema, in turn from Greek systД“ma) is a set of interacting or interdependent
entities, real or abstract, forming an integrated whole.
A group of interdependent items that interact regularly to perform a task.
Economic System
An economic system is a system that involves the production, distribution and consumption of
goods and services between the entities in a particular society. The economic system is composed
of people and institutions, including their relationships to productive resources, such as through the
convention of property. In a given economy, it is the systemic means by which problems of
economics are addressed, such as the economic problem of scarcity through allocation of finite ...

A central directorate controls the production of goods and services. The directorate decides the
nature, quantity, and mood of production of goods. This distribution of goods is also directed by
the central body.
Socialism refers to a broad set of economic theories of social organization advocating state or
collective ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods, and
the creation of an egalitarian society.
Modern socialism originated in the late nineteenth century working class political movement. Karl
Marx posited that socialism would be achieved via class struggle and a proletarian revolution which
represents the transitional stage between capitalism and communism.
Socialists mainly share the belief that capitalism unfairly concentrates power and wealth among a
small segment of society that controls capital and creates an unequal society. All socialists advocate
the creation of an egalitarian society, in which wealth and power are distributed more evenly,
although there is considerable disagreement among socialists over how, and to what extent this
could be achieved
Some features of socialism are written below 1. Socialism is not a discrete philosophy of fixed
doctrine and program 2. Its branches advocate a degree of social interventionism and economic
rationalization, sometimes opposing each other. 3. Another dividing

Shrew And 10 Things I Hate About You Comparison
The Shrew In You
There are many similarities and differences between The Taming of The Shrew and 10 Things I
hate About You. The obvious and main difference is that The Taming of The Shrew was actually
written by William Shakespeare whereas 10 things I Hate About You is not written by William. The
language in the two is a little different though due to the date each was created. A similarity is that
the main characters are the same. The main similarity though is definitely the plot line. The Taming
of The Shrew is a comedy written by William Shakespeare possibly in the year of 1590. It is the
second play that Shakespeare ever wrote. 10 Things I hate About Youwas filmed in 1999. The
movie was directed by Gil Junger and was released on March 31, 1999. Although the film was
later released and the name was changed it still has the same plot line that Shakespeare wrote. So
the movie and play were basically the same except 10 Things I Hate About You is more modern
than the original play. The language between The Taming of The Shrew and 10 Things I Hate
About You is completely different. In the play the language is older and harder to understand due
to the style of it. In the movie the language is actually a lot easier to understand because it is ...

Katarina, Kate, and Bianca both have the same personality in the play and movie. They are
constant and rarely ever change. Bianca and Kate are still completely opposites in both the play

someone that we would call a blonde. Kate is commonly misunderstood because of her choice to
be different and stand out. I would have to say though in both The Taming of The Shrew and 10
Things I Hate About You she ends up being my favorite character. In the movie she actually has a
good heart throughout the whole thing, some people just aren t able to understand

Examples Of Rivalry In Hamlet
In Hamlet by William Shakespeare, there are multiple of characters who seduce their enemy into
their death and by avenging the death of their loved ones. Rivalries among characters are one of
the constant themes that we happen to see throughout Hamlet. Not only does rivalry or revenge as
you would like to say it inhabit in almost every scene of the play, nevertheless it has a great
outcome in Hamlet. Throughout Hamlet, there happens to be multiple of conflicts in which
characters want to avenge the death of someone in their family who has passed away. In the play

The Boston Massacre
The Boston Massacre
The tension between the colonies and Britain was nothing new. There were several occasions where
the colonies became greatly infuriated with the unpleasant treatment they were receiving. Prior to
the year 1770, much of the outcry came from the acts passed by the British government, such as the
Stamp Act, Quartering Act, and Declaratory Act ( A Timeline of the American Revolution). Even
though the colonists were infuriated, it would take something more to push them over the edge.
This something would turn out to be what is now called the Boston Massacre. Although the Boston
Massacre won t go down as the deadliest massacre in American history, it will go down as one of
the most pivotal turning points due to the colonists depiction of the event. Several things
happened leading up to the massacre itself, which are important to note. The colonists were
becoming increasingly frustrated with Britain, which led to political unrest. To counteract this
unrest, British troops were sent to Boston, where they arrived on October 1, 1968. Originally,
there wasn t an open resistance to the presence of the troops. Over time, things would change,
which can be derived from the events of March 5, 1770. There were two sides: the mob of
colonists and the the British soldiers. The colonists ended up attacking a British sentinel, leaving
the British captain to call in more soldiers, who were also attacked. Shots were fired by the
British, killing a total of 5 and wounding 6

Happiness and Epicurus Essay examples
Epicureanism is a philosophy developed the teachings and ideals of a man named Epicurus.
Epicureanism is defined by Epicurus as the pleasure for the end of all morality and that real
pleasure is attained through a life of prudence, honor, and justice. Epicurus introduced this
philosophy around 322 B.C, and two schools established in Athens. Epicurustaught the ethics of his
philosophy in his school, that a person should live by the art of making life happy , and that
prudence is the noblest part of philosophy (newadvent.org). Epicurus ideals for life intrigued people
and they began to think that perhaps the ethics of Epicureanismhad some truth behind it; a person
should live his/her life to the fullest in order to become happy. Epicurus... Show more content on

Thus, the Epicurean way isn t too far from today s world views on how Americans live. Thomas
Jefferson, during the history of America, admitted that the teachings of Epicureanism, by saying
this quote, Epicureanism and Epicurus give laws for governing ourselves, Jesus a supplement of
the duties and charities we owe to others, (epicurus.net). Through the eyes of the beholder a person
can be able to see that Epicureanism, in fact, can be put into the context of life without really
thinking about the philosophy. The history of Epicureanism is important for people because his
teachings are simple enough to live by, without submitting. The ethics behind Epicureanism are
very simple. Epicurus demonstrates that experience shows happiness is not best attained by directly
seeking it. The selfish are not more happy but less so than the unselfish. This statement is very
powerful for the simple person. Epicurus proves that if a person seeks to be happy he/she usually
won t be able to find true happiness.
Epicurus states
Thus although virtue is inseparable from pleasure and necessary if we are to be happy, it is to be
chosen not for its own sake but for the sake of pleasure. Beauty and the virtues and the like are to
be honored if they provide pleasure, but, if they do not, we must say goodbye to them.(Intro.

A View from the Bridge by Miller
Miller s A View from the Bridge, originally written in 1956 as a one act play, has many features
of a classic Greek tragedy. It is set in the Italian American neighbourhood, situated in Red Hook,
near Brooklyn Bridge in New York. It is in this community Miller chooses to dramatise themes of
conflict, betrayal, love and obsession. The underlying omerta is present throughout the play and is
the reason for the conflict as it is defied by Eddie Carbone, the Italian longshoreman, who destroys
himself in a clash between his blind passions and primeval ideas of his own people about right
living.
In Eddie, Miller creates the classic Italian American family man who strives to be head of the
household and goes about with a sense of pride and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Code of honour binds families and the whole neighbourhood with a sense of community, and
to betray or defy it is the most disgraceful thing to do as everyone is supposed to look after each
other. In a traditional Greek tragedy, the tragic hero upsets the gods or their destiny or a code. So it
is fitting, then, that Miller has chosen the Italian American society to situate his tragedy in as it is
in this society where he can use the code of silence in the community, the omerta, to replace the
gods or destiny which is usually defied by the tragic hero.
Miller has shown that respect is a recurring theme throughout the play, and is critical to the
tragedy as a whole, as it is present in males. This is manifested in Eddie who repeats his name
over and over: Eddie Carbone. Eddie Carbone. Eddie Carbone. The play is centred on respect; it
begins with a name ( This one s name is Eddie Carbone ) and ends with the same name repeated
three times again. The name represents everything he is, not just physically but socially too it is
something the community will hear and immediately have a perception of the person, for
example if a person has a good name they are generally respectable . Eddie must have respect for
his role as a tragic hero, which he does as he yearns for it throughout the play as he wants to be a
masculine figure. This is a crucial

Augustus Caesar Biography
Augustus Caesar (63 BCE 14 CE) was the name of the first and, by all accounts, greatest emperor
of Rome. Augustus was born Gaius Octavius Thurinus on September 23, 63 BCE. He was adopted
by his great uncle Julius Caesar in 44 BCE, and then took the name Gaius Julius Caesar. Originally
called Gaius Octavius, he changed his name to Gaius Julius CaesarOctavian, upon being adopted by
his great uncle. Seventeen years later, the Senate awarded him with the name Augustus, meaning
Revered One. Augustus came from a prosperous family that had long been settled at Velletri,
southeast of Rome. Augustus married three times, although his first union, to Mark Antony s
stepdaughter Clodia Pulchra, was unconsummated. His second wife, Scribonia, who had his
only child, Julia the Elder. He divorced in 39 B.C. to marry Livia Drusilla, who had two sons,
by her first husband. The family tree became more complicated after Augustus had his stepson
Tiberius briefly marry his daughter, and then adopted Tiberius outright as son and successor in
A.D. 4. Augustus Caesar died in A.D. 14, his empire secured and at peace. His reported last
words were twofold: to his subjects he said, I found Rome of clay; I leave it to you of marble,
but to the friends who had stayed with him in his rise to power he added, Have I played the part
well? Then applaud me as I exit. Soon after that acknowledgement of human frailty, the Roman
Senate officially declared their departed emperor, like Julius Caesar before

Classical, Baroque, and Romantic Music Influence on Modern Genres
The Classical, Romantic and Baroque eras all influenced modern genres now a day. They are the

Form and style of Sergei Prokofiev symphony No. 1 in D major
The symphony has four movements 1.Allegro; 2.Larghetto ; 3.Gavotta: Non troppo allegro;
4.Finale: Molto vivace, but the piece only last around 15 minutes. The symphony was considered
as one of the first neoclassical compositions. Prokofiev was attempted to write in the style of
Joseph Haydn in this classical symphony. As we can see that the elements of the old and the new
styles are mixed together, and became a new piece with galant style , simple but elegance.
Haydn s style of Music in Prokofiev s Symphony
Prokofiev imitated Haydn style of music in his piece shows that the Baroque period is affecting the
music after 1950. The main characteristic of Haydn s music is a large piece with short and simple
motifs, with standard accompanying figures. The music is often quite formally concentrated, and
the important musical events of a movement can be played more quicker than normal. Which is one
of the element from Prokofiev s Symphony No.1 in the 1st and last movement. Another common
compositional form that Haydn normally uses is Sonata from, which is also used in Prokofiev s

Similarities Between My Papa s Waltz And Do Not Go Gentle...
The feelings directed towards the fathers in the poems My Papa s Waltz and Do not go gentle
into that goodnight have both similar and constrasting views. In the poem My Papa s Waltz, the
boy speaks of his father in a disappointed way by saying that he smelled alcohol on his father s
breath and his ears kept being scraped by his dad s belt while his father carlessly danced with him.
In this poem, the father is potrayed as not one of the greatest father figures that there is. On the
other hand, in the poem Do not go gentle into that goodnight, the son is speaking of wise men,
strong men, and so forth. He states that when it s their time to face death, they don t go down

Flies With Honey Guilty
The critical function of drama , so Robert Brustein tell us, is to arouse the remorse of guilty
creatures (382). In Flies with Honey, the underlining theme is guilt: not only Anna s compunction
over potentially murdering the girl she is in love with, but also her guilt for having these feelings
of love in the first place. This is intended to be portrayed not only through dialogue but having Amy,
the alleged murder victim, appear as a manifestation of the protagonist s guilt. In order to present
this successfully, I had to understand what it means to write of guilt feelings for the stage and how
such structure can affect characters and their authenticity. I also had to explore how this medium
can be realised in musical theatre.
In very broad terms, there exist two types of plot: one that is driven by action, and one that is driven
by characters (Alderson). Because my stageplay is only fifteen or so pages long and takes place in
one location, it allowed itself to be more character based. However, writing for theatre also brings
the audience into what Martin Meisel calls the present progressive , which he defines as a state of

him to a few minor colonial government posts in Ireland. Afterwards, Edmund Spenser was
bestowed a castle and 3,000 acres of land in Munster, Ireland. However, the castle was burned
down into a rebel uprising. This was due to Spenser being disrespectful of the Irish and their
religion. Edmund Spenser would then go on to be a poet. He was creative and adventurous when
it came to his work. His greatest works are The Shepheardes Calendar and The Faerie Queene.
Spenser became a great influence to several poets such as Milton and other romantics. In the end,
Edmund Spenser became one of the greatest English poets of his time.
The Faerie Queene is similar to works of Beowulf because of its Anglo Saxon epics. Also, Book
I has a hint of classical and renaissance adventures. The Faerie Queene is a perfect combination of
themes and motifs that was already introduced in other assignments. This makes Spenser s The
Faerie Queene an epic poem. An epic poem is described as a long narrative in elevated style while
presenting characters of high positions in adventures thus forming an organic whole through their
relation to a central heroic figure and their development of events that play an important part to the
history of a nation or race. The common characteristics of the main character is that the hero is
played by a person of importance such who would have a historical or legendary significance. The

Maps, Background And The Course Of The Battle
Maps, Background and the Course of the Battle
The map above shows the location of Ypres on the continuous front and shows the dates and
movements of the battle, from both sides. As can be seen on the map, the first battle of Ypres, and
the subsequent ones, took place on the famous flanders fields. The city of Ypres itself was located
strategically on the roads leading to ports in Flanders; due to this the city had been the locus of
several battles since the 16th century onwards. Many historians agree that the utter level of
destruction in this city alone, relative to the amount of land gained, frankly outlines the sterility of
the entire First World War.

The first Battle of Ypres was a sign of what was to come in the following battles in the war,
however it was still one of the bloodiest battles in the course of World War 1 and Left its mark on
each of the nations involved.
Details of the Battle
The First Battle of Ypres lasted from 12 October to 22 November. This Large battle itself can in
fact be further dissected into three major battles: Langemarck 21 24 October; Gheluvelt 29 31
October; and Nonnebosschen 11 November.
The first battle started a trend that would essentially go on for the remainder of the battle of
Ypres, it was an encounter between British of German troops which lead to an Allied defence from
a succession of large German offensives eventually causing the Germans to dig deeper and become
more defensive when their offensive resources were exhausted. Sir John French believed that the
allies could defeat the Germans by attacking from the North, believing that there was only one
German corps, when in fact there were 5 between Ypres and Nieuport. There was initial progress
however the number of German troops encountered seemed only to grow. By the time they realised
that they were outnumbered and went into the defensive, they had gained less than a kilometer.

1. The Sales Rep. A sales representative for a struggling computer supply firm has a chance to
close a multimillion dollar deal for an office system to be installed over a two year period. The
machines for the first delivery are in the company s warehouse, but the remainder would have to be
ordered from the manufacturer. Because the manufacturer is having difficulty meeting the heavy
demand for the popular model, the sales representative is not sure that the subsequent deliveries can
be made on time. Any delay in converting to the new system would be costly to the customer;
however, the blame could be placed on the manufacturer. Should the sales representative close the

As an MD for a brewing company, her job entails for her to be able to target this youth group and
get them hooked unto their beer. The case states that there is a lot of competition. They need to
find a unique selling point, which makes them different in selling the same product. The director
herself is uncomfortable with the tricks used to attract their attention. I think she should go along
with her competition, because even though there is a drinking age of 18+ or 21+, kids hardly
follow these rules anyway. Even though she herself doesn t believe in encouraging underage
drinking, she should be aware that these tricks aren t solely responsible for the youth of today and
their drinking habits. She can advertise her alcohol, with her brand name without graphical
descriptions of parties this way she can compete with her rivals and at the same time incorporate a
little bit of what she believes in. Ethically, it would be wrong to encourage something that is against
the law, but in my opinion from the business view, when competition is there the aim is to be on
top of it.

Truman Doctrine Effects
The Cold war was a struggle for power between the Soviet Union and the United states going on
from the late 1940 s until the decomposition of the Soviet Union in 1991. In only a few years these
World War II partners turned into enemies locked in a global struggle with military, political, and
ideological disputes.
Americans and Soviets agreed that culture was an important weapon in the ongoing battle to
influence Europe during The Cold War. Both sides believed that expanding their way of life could
be the key in winning support for their cause. To gain this endorsement, Americans wanted to
spread their high culture by setting up free lending libraries, so Europeans can read the classic
books and music from America. Although this did not have the effect they wanted. Instead of
flocking to the classics in the library they went to the contemporary section. Then, the United States
started using this love for rock and roll to pump in their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

In the book A Separate Peace, there were many characters that made very important choices. These
choices decided what happened in the book as the story went along. But, there was one choice
that influenced most of the book. That choice was made by Gene Forrester, an intelligent,
introverted, and somewhat athletic teenageer. This choice was made in the summer of 1942,

the Devon School, which is a very good prep school located in the U.S. state of New Hampshire.

The Rifle Into The Federal Army
With a new century, came new advancements in technology, and weaponry. Muskets used in the
American Revolutionary War were outdated and inaccurate when it came to the Civil War. The
introduction of the rifle into the Federal Army put the Northern Army leagues ahead of the
Southern Army at the battlefield. Because of the highly industrial based economy in the North, the
usage of rifled bore firearms became widespread in the Federal Army. Moreover, rifles also saw
improvements in loading efficiency, changing the main method of loading to breech loading.
Breech loading a rifle, when compared to the archaic method of ramming the bullet down the barrel
or muzzle loading, greatly reduced the chance of injury caused by the rifle. In... Show more content

This allowed the cylinder of the pistol to spin freely while in half cock, enabling the soldier
/wielder to easily reload whenever he/she felt necessary. With such numerous advantages over the
flintlock pistols , the Colt Revolver essentially revolutionized the way weapons were created and
their mechanisms. In the current day, most firearms operate with a magazine which holds the
bullets that are to be fired from the weapon. Similarly, in the Colt Revolver, there was a cylinder
containing the bullets that were to be shot from the Revolver thereby maximizing the efficiency of
weapons.
In addition to advancements in smaller firearms, the US military also saw improvements in the
sector of long range rifles. Muzzle loading muskets from the Revolutionary War were highly
inefficient and and extremely dangerous to use. When on the battlefield, trying to load a muzzle
loading musket became very complicated. If the soldier loaded a bullet but it got jammed, and
they tried to fire, the musket would explode in their face, causing many unnecessary injuries to
the soldier force (National Park Service, Evolution of the Breechloader ). With the invention of
the breech loader, loading a rifle became exceedingly simple. In a breech loading rifle, the soldier
loads a cartridge containing the bullet and the gunpowder into a chamber. They would then proceed
to fire the weapon. This method of loading a weapon was

The Enlargement Of Nato And European Union
Eastern Europe has never had a stable political atmosphere compared to the Western countries,
which can be observed as a major threat to any MNC trying to penetrate this market. Most of these
countries were under a communist regime and have gained their independence rather recently
(Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, and Macedonia became independent in early 1990 s, by
separating from Yugoslavia, and Moldova, Ukraine and Belarusgained their independence in 1991,
with the fall of Soviet Union). The influence of communistic philosophy, therefore, can explain the
difficulties these countries were facing when they tried to integrate and approach the West.
Even though the enlargement of NATO and European Union was a strategic move to make a
political and economic reform in this particular region, which would help it in a better integration
with western countries, the recent rise of nationalist and populist forces in several countries in
eastern Europe, threatens to undermine the reform process. [1] Happenings such as the Orange
Revolution in 2004 and Crimea crisis in 2014 in Ukraine, or the authoritarian ruling style by the
Belarus president Aleksandr Lukasenko (who still sustains close political and economic ties with
Russia and bans political and civil freedom in the country) are solid indicators of an ongoing
political instability in this area. On the other hand, countries such as Romania (which also had a
rocky history of decades long dictatorship of Nicolai Ceausescu),

Steven Allan Spielberg is known worldwide as a screenwriter, producer and one of America s
most successful filmmakers. His 20 highest grossing films grossed 8.45 billion. He is a three time
winner of the Oscar Award, twice as the best director of the year.
Spielberg was born on December 18, 1946 in Cincinnati (Ohio, USA), the son of a Jewish family

up the idea of her career for education of four children Stephen, Anne, Sue and Nancy.
In school, he often sat at home and watched TV. The portable 8 millimeter movie camera

As said by Ed Gonzalez in his article about Close up, the movie is still definitive film on film

how Bazin might react to Abbas Kiarostami s film. Throughout this course so far, shots and editing
have been an integral part of what has been covered. Close uphas a unique approach to how it is

The mummy complex is when cinema satisfies the desire to preserve. If he could give a reaction to
this Bazin would say that this whole film is real. Due to the fact that film is supposed to be trusted
in his mind and should show reality it means the film is all real. If this were the case though it
would make all movies look real. There is a knowledge that film is scripted for the most part and
what we see regularly is rarely real. This does preserve reality in Bazin s mind though. With the
kicking of the can, it shows that although it is scripted it is not a fake movie. There is still the
sense of reality in every scene. The can saves that, it preserves that sense. The mise en scene in
Kiarostami s Close up leans more towards the realistic side. The aspects of this movie
continually fall under the category of realistic. With the camera location for some of the shots it
makes it realistic. Seeing the scenes from behind car windows or other obstacles makes the
scenes real. They are real because it is like you are watching what is going on live right in front
of you. The lighting of the movie makes it realistic as well. There was never really any scenes
that were either too dark or too bright to make it seem fake. Even inside the courtroom it looked as

Analysis Of Florine Stettheimer s Self Portrait With...
This essay will in depth argue that in Self Portrait with Paradise Birds, Florine Stettheimer s
visually apparent and delicate application of scumbling lines, her carefully particularly thought out
application of muted complementary and monochromatic colours, and how she actually makes use
of blurred soft edged shapes, all for the most part contribute in influencing unity and emphasis
within her self portrait, giving her paintingan overall unearthly ambience.
Florine s visually fairly apparent and delicate application of scumbling lines creates an impression
of unity , which she has achieved through her use of thin , almost translucent lines being layered on
top of each other , which is fairly significant . This technique creates the impactful effect of the
paintings background colours emerging towards the foreground, giving the viewer a visual sense of
interconnectedness that the natural world simply doesn t provide, excluding opaque objects like
glassware sheer curtains as an example. Florine s committed uses of scumbling lines also create a
rather impactful emphasis, in the way in which she applies scumbling lines onto her depiction of
herself. The viewer attention is instantly lured into noticing her self portraits eerie transparency. As
if though she did not inhabit an earthly body, but instead one of the spiritual realm. It is because of
this visual interconnectedness and eerie transparency captured through her use scumbling lines,

Mallard s Demise
Louise Mallard s Demise in The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin Kate Chopin s short story, The
Story of an Hour , is about a woman, named Louise Mallard, in the late 1800s who is told that her

drowned in sorrow. After mourning the loss, the womanrealizes that she is finally free and

Either way, it can be interpreted that the couple never saw each other before Louise died.
Therefore, Louise Mallard may have simply passed away from a heart that was exhausted from her
strong initial grief of losing her husband and her new adventurous excitement from gaining freedom
(Cunningham 3). The unique ending of The Story of an Hour also contains some irony. During the
1800s, which is the time period that Chopin wrote this short story, men held more respect than
women in society, and women were expected to be dependent upon a husband. A critic, Emily Toth,
states that Chopin may have included Louise s death at the end of the story to please authors and
editors because presenting that a woman may be able to happily live without a husband in the
1890s would be a fanatic idea (Cunningham 4). The multitude of conservative readers in the
1890s could interpret that Louise passed away because she was too independent, but the actual
meaning of the death may have very well been because of Louise s joy from finally being
dismissed from her husband s control. By using irony, Chopin was able to both please the critics
of her time period, and prove a hidden point that women can find joy without a man. Over all, in

The Building Sector Affects The Society
Executive Summary
The building sector affects the society in various ways: economically, socially, naturally, and built
environmentally. In a more direct or indirect manner, the various building activities including
designs, construction, use, refurbishments, as well as demolition of the buildings affects the
environmental performance differently. In bringing environmental issue into the context, it is true
that a feature of environmentally sustainable is not only comfortable to occupy, but also consume
small amount of energy. Studies argue that the major goal of sustainable design involves reducing
or ultimately eliminating depletion of natural resources and degradation of environment due to the
infrastructures and facilities made by man. Although various factors are barriers, this situation calls
for a better ways of approaching the building activities that are environmentally sustainable.
Building policies plays critical role in reducing environmental impacts although little research has
been done as far as this sector is concerned. These policies should focus on codes for environmental
sustainability of building designs that establishes better planning practices, designing as well as
constructing buildings with environmental concerns of the impacts of the build structures (Davies,
2004).

interpret the meaning of the results of the tests. Then what is the best way to address the results
with which specific chemicals. Although these events are what started the snowball effect for my

The Colossus Poem Analysis
Whether it be confessional or imagist, poetry provides a way to define all emotions and express
any suppressed feelings with a literary approach. Similarly, the confessional poem The Colossus
by Sylvia Plath and the imagist poem The Charge of the Light Brigade by Alfred, Lord Tennyson
both depict the emotional trauma caused due to the loss of lives. Plath s poem The Colossus
expresses the absence of her father and its impact on her life personally. Whereas, Tennyson s
narrative poem The Charge of the Light Brigade explores the grief of violence and sufferings of
war due to the lost lives of many soldiers fighting in the war and the remembrance of their glory.
The common use of vivid imageries and metaphors shape the theme of death and suffering in
both of the poems. Plath and Tennyson show the contrasting ideas of loss and grief and how it
changes the lives of individuals and how it forms the society as it is presently viewed. Plath s
The Colossus and Tennyson s The Charge of the Light Brigade address the theme of death and
suffering, with the use of imageries throughout the poems. Plath s use of imageries depicts the
effect of her father s death her personal life. On the contrary, Tennyson s poem uses imageries to
delineate the overall effect of war on the society. Plath describes her emotional and mental state by
saying Thirty years now I have labored/To dredge the silt from your throat (8,9). Plath creates an

The Hundred Years War is the seventh longest war in history lasting one hundred and sixteen

Strengths And Weaknesses Of Beowulf
The strengths of heroes in epic poems has been written on a countless amount of times. Why?
Because the heroes strengths are plainly displayed in the literature and the weaknesses are not.
However, the weaknesses can be found where the heroes turn to for strength. In the Epic of
Beowulf, the journey begins with the terrorization of the Mead Hall by an awful monster named
Grendel. Beowulfcomes in and saves the day by killing Grendel and he receives riches and fame
for doing so. Then, stricken with grief, Grendel s mother comes to the mead hall to avenge the
death of her son. Beowulf goes and fights Grendel s mother in her home in the swamp and
manages to kill her with a sword forged by giants. After this battle, he is more beloved than the
one before and is endlessness praised and rewarded. Then, fifty years later, Beowulf is the king
of Geat and a thief angers the dragon. Beowulf then decides to kill the dragon himself. He
manages to kill the dragon with the help of a Geat named Wiglaf, but loses his life in the process.
In the Epic of Gilgamesh, our hero has a rough beginning with actions that resemble a villain more

Richard Rodriguez Hunger Of Memory Analysis
Remedial Reading Richard Rodriguez, in the passage Remedial Reading from his
autobiography Hunger of Memory (1982), promotes active reading as a developer of one s
mind. He justifies his position by describing his initial experiences with reading, specifically his
attachment to the reading. Rodriguez s anecdote functions as an encourager of stubborn minds
trying to read and displaying its potential to change their life for the better. Rodriguez uses a very
descriptive style that may be too verbose for children but compliments the verbosity with enough
explanation of his purpose for his message to be known or ascertained. The Gramercy Gym
Edward Hoagland, in the passage The Gramercy Gym (1985) from his book Heart s Desire ,
asserts that boxing is a sport on the decline. He supports his assertion by describing a gym in
New York throughout time. His account chronicles how the gym is not the same energetic site
it once was. Hoagland s audience includes sports enthusiasts who particularly enjoy and want to
preserve boxing, his writing would be confusing to people unacquainted with boxing, as its
jargon is riddled in the passage. The Great American Desert Edward Abbey, in the passage The
Great American Desert from his book The Journey Home (1977), asserts that the desert is a
terrible place but should still be benefited from because of its solitary nature. He portrays the
desert as a horrific place that no one would like to be in. He then describes the desert as a quiet

control group, VEH F1, consisted of sixteen female rats that were administered saline. At 60 days
of ages the female rats were mated with colony male rats. On postnatal day 21 male offspring
were housed until test began. Only one offspring per litter was used. When the male offspring
became 40 or 60 days old they were tested for CPP responses to morphine or saline. Rats were
tested in three chambers, which had infrared to track the rat. During preconditioning, day 1, rats
were placed in the middle chamber but allowed to go to any of the three chambers. Researchers
recorded the amount of time spent in each chamber during 15 minutes. Day 2 morning, the rats
were weighed, given saline, and placed in chamber A for 30 minutes. Five hours later rats were
administered either saline or morphine and placed in camber B for 30 minutes. Conditioning
repeated for 3 days. On the fifth day rats were placed in the middle

Why Do You Persecute Me
It is on this road to Damascus that Paul becomes converted. God questions Paul about his actions
Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? . God then blinds Paul and sends him to be baptised by
Ananias. Quite unexpectedly, Paul had an experience that transformed the direction of his life .
Paul began immediately preaching the word of Godand how Christ was the son of God and was
crucified. It is clear to see the effect God had on Paul as all his life he was a dedicated Jew and a
zealous Pharisee devoting his life to living it how God would want but in fact he was very wrong,
Now in the blinding light he saw Jesushimself as the Messiah. He had wanted to be as perfect a Jew
as possible, to live before God, and now it seemed that in fact

Gold and Its Demand
Running Head: Gold and Its Demand Gold and Its Demand In the year 2008, the prices of gold
fell down to $9oo from $1,035. This was a drastic downfall in the price of gold in 2008 and this
has directly affected investors in a number of ways. The investors suffered losses of large
margin and in addition to this, many of the investors had paid from ten to fifty percent of the
deposits of their shares and when a downfall occurred in the prices of gold, many of the investors
lost almost whole amount of their capital. Beside this, the fall in the prices of gold was less as
compared to other equities and commodities (Bohm, 2011, pg 34 39). The year 2008 changed
the shape of competition among the gold investors and the main characteristic of this year was
the failure of government in the banking industry. The entire economy was suffered in this year
and in this year of deflation; the affect on gold was a decrease in price. Gold prices fall to $690,
then came back to $800 but then once again fall down due to poor financial conditions. The
value of $ which was less at the start of 2008, started to increase during the mid of the year and
the economy was becoming better but again at the end of the same year, the value of $ began to
decrease and this had a direct impact on the prices of gold. In addition to this, the central bank of
different countries started decreasing their interest rates and loans were provided on easy terms and
conditions. Interest rate offered by the Swedish

Juice Vs. Green Tea
The data above proves both our hypothesis and prediction wrong. We hypothesized that the lemon
green tea would inhibit the growth of bacteria more than green tea. This is because along with
having catechins from the green tea, which interfere with bacterial membrane processes, the lemon
green tea had flavonoids from the lemon, which alter enzyme activity, and a low pH, inhibiting acid
tolerance and the formation of bacterial biofilm. In both of tests, the green teasolution created a
larger zone of inhibition than the green tea with lemon, which is why our hypothesiswas wrong. The
water was our negative control, so it created no zone of inhibition and the beach was our positive
control, so it always had a zone of inhibition. From the both

Imidazoline Essay
Present there is an enormous deal of scientific attention in the field of Imidazoline derivatives.
Imidazoline is a Nitrogen compound and it can be utilized in organic dyes as nitrogenous electron
donors since it introduces additional electron donors at position 2. Because of high molar extinction
coefficient Imidazoline and other molecular structures containing nitrogen developed as metal free
organic dyes. Usually, metal free organic dyes have the apparent molecular structure of the electron
donor element and the acceptor element connected by the conjugated chain (D ПЂ A). 2
imidazoline is a one of the isomer derived from the imidazole. Imidazoline derivatives are
pharmaceutically and biologically very significant. Imidazolines exhibit major pharmacological and
biological activities such as antidepressive [1], antihyperglycemic [2] , antihypercholesterolemic[3],
anti inflammatory[4] and antihypertensive[5].The drug clonidine containing Imidazoline is used

Imidazoline and its derivatives are important sort of inhibitors which could effectively inhibit
corrosion of carbon steel against CO2 and H2S [6, 7]. Recently C.D Contreras [8] was reported the
structural and vibrational analyses of 2 (2 benzofuranyl) 2 imidazoline. The purpose of this study is
to obtain the theoretical information about the molecular structure and electronic parameters of 2
phenyl 2 imidazoline.Density functional theory has been adopted for the precise study of the
molecular geometry and electronic distribution. Here we study the experimental and theoretical

The Tragedy of Gay Marriage
Sam Schulman s The Worst Thing About Gay Marriage presents an interesting argument against
gay marriage that hinges upon maintaining a traditional form of marriage. He actually claims that
gay marriage is unnecessary (381). According to Schulman, there are 4 primary effects of marriage
within his definition he calls the kinship system. First, marriageprotects and controls a woman s
sexuality. Second, the possible pairings are limited by the kinship system to avoid incest or other
taboos. Third, marriage creates a situation where licit sex can occur. Fourth, it places a clear divide
between childhood innocence and adult, married, life. All of which is in addition to maintaining a
standard family hierarchy, in which a marriage almost... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Marriage has evolved over time. Once, far back in history, when states were run in close
cooperation with religious leaders, a marriage was strictly the dominion of the church, and the
only definition was much like the one above (though they were more lax in avoiding incest than
I would suspect Schulman s proposed structure would be). In the eyes, there had to be a system
where sex would be legitimized, while women and children were protected from it and its
consequences. This made sense when repeated sex acts would almost definitely cause
pregnancy, and possibly spread disease. As religion and government split into different
organizations, each retained a definition of marriage that was a bit different from the other.
Since religion held sway over what was considered pure and good, it took it upon itself to retain
the parts of the old structure that dealt with the morality and social responsibility of marriage,
and this is generally considered to be a social structure of marriage. And now, the social form of
marriage is migrating into being controlled by the couple who are being married instead of their
church. The government, on the other hand, became able to define who would be able to marry
and place official benefits and restrictions on a married couple, creating a legal structure of
marriage that was not the same as the social one. While

Political Stability And Level Of Corruption In The UAE
Political Stability and Level of Corruption The political stability in the UAE has been stable in
the economy for many years. The UAE is a well developed country that provides a good level
quality of life and a high standard of living. The country is ranked 12th out of 45 in the markets
around the world by expats as a destination to live and work (Augustine, 2016). With the UAE

The Importance Of Restraint And Seclusion Of The Mental...
TAQ3: The use of treatments such as restraint is permitted according to the Mental Health Act
(1983), for treating individual suffering from mental health disorder (Mind, 2013). This law can
be applied with or without the approval of the person involved as its ultimate goal is to prevent
the person from harming himself or others (Royal College of Nursing, 2015). However, with
recent incidence of injuries and even death that has occurred as a result of this kind of treatment
has raised doubt in the minds of on an enormous number of people (Mind, 2013). The debate over
whether it is morally or professionally right to use restraint as part of the treatment for individuals
suffering from mental health issues remained unabated as a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The practice of restraint is more commonly used in acute setting compared to other mental health
settings(City University, London, 2009) Argument from health professional is that the use
restraint is very vital to their security especially in situations where a patient poses the risk of
being a menace to himself or others around them (Psychiatric Times, 2015).A study has showed
that the act of violence and aggression against patients and nursing staff is unbelievably rising,
with about more than half of NHS staff nurses being violently assaulted by patients in 2013 14
(Nice, 2015). Even though, most of these attacks do not normally result in major injuries, they
have caused staff to experience severe anxiety, emotional traumas and in some case post traumatic
stress disorder (City University, London, 2009). Against these facts, it is believed that the use of
restraint, especially in an Acute setting, is essential and ethical (Psychiatric Times, 2015).
However, research has shown that there is a correlation between staffs reaction towards mental
health patients and the violent and aggressive behaviour exhibited towards them. This typically
occurs when patients feel they are being patronized, not made aware of what is going on around
them and not treated well( Glover, 2005). With recent records of excessive and abusive use of
restraint, there have being

Vittorio de Sica s The Bicycle Thief Essay
Vittorio de Sica s The Bicycle Thief
Since the beginning of its existence as a country, Italy has faced enormous challenges in
establishing itself as a unified political and social entity. The geographic, economic, and linguistic
differences between its various regions and the artificial manner in which they were amalgamated
created a legacy of internal divisions that continues to dominate the country s political climate to
this day. Italy s numerous historical fiascoes, such as its disastrous involvement in the two World
Wars and the rise of fascism, further escalated the domestic problems that had haunted it since the
Risorgimento. At first, the anti fascist Resistance movement, which dominated the end of World
War II, seemed to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Originally applied to the government of Agostino Depretis in the 1880s, transformismo quickly
became equated with any ethically questionable, self interested actions taken by public officials
purely for the sake of staying in office and maintaining power. This often manifested itself in the
creation of a smoke screen of reformatory rhetoric intended to satisfy the electorate, without a
subsequent introduction of any real reforms. The colonialist manner in which Piedmont annexed
the other regions to create a united Italy during the Risorgimento and the divisions inherent in the
new kingdom resulted in a historical compromise that made any deliberate social change very
difficult. Consequently, Italianleaders of the destra storica and sinistra storica (the first two eras of
Italian political history) shifted their focus from meaningful governance to the practice of
transformismo, permanently shaping the face of Italian political life. The prevailing motto of this
practice was captured perfectly in a line from Luchino Visconti s 1963 film, The Leopard: Things
must change in order to stay the same.
Attendismo, the other type of quasi action, was a tendency of the leftist Italian parties to passively
wait for change to occur from the outside, without taking any substantial revolutionary action on
their own. The Socialist Party s slogan No support, but no

Tom Brady Competitors
The true competitors, though, are the ones who always play to win ( Tom Brady BrainyQuote ).
This quote was said by Tom Brady in discussing the importance of being a hardworking and
dedicated athlete. Tom Brady grew up watching football, imitating such players like Joe Montana
and Steve Young. After high school, he was drafted in the 1995 MLB Draft. Rather than
accepting the draft, he chose to play football for the University of Michigan. Brady was drafted
out of Michigan as a backup quarterback in the sixth round of the 2000 NFL Draft. He will soon
be going on to his 20th season as the starting quarterback for the New England Patriots. Tom Brady

He was chosen as the 2011 MVP ( Tom Brady. Newsmakers ). In 2017, Brady became the oldest
NFL player to win the MVP award, doing so at the age of 40. He maintained 40 votes from a
national panel of media. It was Brady s third MVP honor, tying him with Jim Brown, Johnny
Unitas, and even Brett Farve for second most all time (Corner). Brady also has an award for Pro
Bowl selections. On December 20th, 2016, with his eighth successive selection, Brady tied Hall of
Famer John Hannah for the most consecutive Pro Bowl selections in Patriots history. He was 249
of 372 for 3,064 yards, 22 touchdowns, and only two interceptions. Brady did all that while missing
the first four games of the season (Reiss). Brady earned an athlete of the year award as well. In
2007, he was voted Associated Press male athlete of the year after setting a record for 50
touchdown passes ( Tom Brady. Newsmakers ). Brady is well known for his four Super Bowl MVP
awards too. He was voted the game s MVP in Super Bowl 36 after completing five of six passes for

Acephalia A Review of the Effects of Steroid Hormones and Neuropeptides on Social Emotional Behavior Bos, Peter A., Panksepp, Jaak, BluthГ©, Rose Marie, van Honk, Jack (2011). Acute effects of steroid hormones and neuropeptides on human social emotional behavior: A review of single administration studies. Frontiers in Neuroendocrinology 33 (2012) 17 35. 1. Introduction/Background Information The discovery of hormones and their function has been relatively recent. The term was first coined by Professor Earnest Starling in 1905. He derived the word from the Greek meaning to arouse or excite. However, the idea of the role hormones could be traced back as far as ancient Greece. Though Hippocrates theory on humors has been refuted, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The neuro developmental effects of these chemicals are comparatively well known, while their impact on human conduct has yet to be fully comprehended. 2. Goals of the study The main goal of this study was to review all of the placebo controlled single hormone administration studies addressing human social emotional behavior, involving the peptides oxytocin and vasopressin, and the steroids testosterone and estradiol. This research gives insight into the underlying neural mechanisms and also demonstrates substantial hormonal control over human behavior. After reviewing and discussing the placebo controlled studies, they proposed a theoretical model that synthesized detailed knowledge of neuroendocrinology of social emotional behavior in animals, as well as the recently gained data on humans. The study of emotional and behavioral disorders have become more popular in the last twenty years. Characteristics of these irregularities include: learning disabilities that are not explainable by either sensory, health, or intellectual factors; persistently inappropriate feelings and conduct; and/or chronic unhappiness or depression (gadoe.org). The authors of this study thoroughly analyzed the underlying neural mechanisms of supplemental hormones and how they affect participants as opposed to using a placebo. Research into human behavior as it relates to neuroendocrinology will be crucial to future generations and their interrelations. 3. Methods and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Glass Menagerie Manipulation How many people from the ages of 18 34 still live with their parents? Well, on average, about 30.3% of those people still live with their parents, but the reasons as to why are unknown. In the play, The Glass Menagerie, Tom and Laura Wingfield are between the ages of 18 34 and they still live with their mom, Amanda. Now their reasons why they both still live with her are clearly displayed in this play. All three familymembers show eager signs to escape from each other but some sort of physiological and manipulative tornado of emotions is holding them all back. Some might call Amanda crazy, but what is power without a little bit of irrational thinking and disguised manipulation? Although Laura may display her own robust qualities, they cannot match Amanda s steady flow of persuasive strength because she is manipulative, extremely emotional, and is a hard working mother. Throughout the play, Amanda persistently demonstrates controlling power. Before Laura s gentleman caller arrives, Amanda and Laura are arguing about Laura s appearance. Amanda says, To be painfully honest, your chest is flat, (Williams 70). Amanda directly... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Economic System An economic system is a system that involves the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services between the entities in a particular society. This distribution of goods is also directed by the central body. Socialism refers to a broad set of economic theories of social organization advocating state or collective ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods, and the creation of an egalitarian society. Modern socialism originated in the late nineteenth century working class political movement. Karl Marx posited that socialism would be achieved via class struggle and a proletarian revolution which represents the transitional stage between capitalism and communism. Socialists mainly share the belief that capitalism unfairly concentrates power and wealth among a small segment of society that controls capital and creates an unequal society. All socialists advocate the creation of an egalitarian society, in which wealth and power are distributed more evenly, although there is considerable disagreement among socialists over how, and to what extent this could be achieved Some features of socialism are written below 1. • 5. Shrew And 10 Things I Hate About You Comparison The Shrew In You There are many similarities and differences between The Taming of The Shrew and 10 Things I hate About You. The obvious and main difference is that The Taming of The Shrew was actually written by William Shakespeare whereas 10 things I Hate About You is not written by William. The language in the two is a little different though due to the date each was created. A similarity is that the main characters are the same. The main similarity though is definitely the plot line. The Taming of The Shrew is a comedy written by William Shakespeare possibly in the year of 1590. It is the second play that Shakespeare ever wrote. 10 Things I hate About Youwas filmed in 1999. The movie was directed by Gil Junger and was released on March 31, 1999. Although the film was later released and the name was changed it still has the same plot line that Shakespeare wrote. So the movie and play were basically the same except 10 Things I Hate About You is more modern than the original play. The language between The Taming of The Shrew and 10 Things I Hate About You is completely different. In the play the language is older and harder to understand due to the style of it. • 10. The Boston Massacre The Boston Massacre The tension between the colonies and Britain was nothing new. There were several occasions where the colonies became greatly infuriated with the unpleasant treatment they were receiving. Prior to the year 1770, much of the outcry came from the acts passed by the British government, such as the Stamp Act, Quartering Act, and Declaratory Act ( A Timeline of the American Revolution). Even though the colonists were infuriated, it would take something more to push them over the edge. This something would turn out to be what is now called the Boston Massacre. Although the Boston Massacre won t go down as the deadliest massacre in American history, it will go down as one of the most pivotal turning points due to the colonists depiction of the event. Several things happened leading up to the massacre itself, which are important to note. The colonists were becoming increasingly frustrated with Britain, which led to political unrest. To counteract this unrest, British troops were sent to Boston, where they arrived on October 1, 1968. Originally, there wasn t an open resistance to the presence of the troops. Over time, things would change, which can be derived from the events of March 5, 1770. There were two sides: the mob of colonists and the the British soldiers. The colonists ended up attacking a British sentinel, leaving the British captain to call in more soldiers, who were also attacked. Epicureanism is defined by Epicurus as the pleasure for the end of all morality and that real pleasure is attained through a life of prudence, honor, and justice. Epicurus introduced this philosophy around 322 B.C, and two schools established in Athens. Epicurustaught the ethics of his philosophy in his school, that a person should live by the art of making life happy , and that prudence is the noblest part of philosophy (newadvent.org). Thomas Jefferson, during the history of America, admitted that the teachings of Epicureanism, by saying this quote, Epicureanism and Epicurus give laws for governing ourselves, Jesus a supplement of the duties and charities we owe to others, (epicurus.net). Through the eyes of the beholder a person can be able to see that Epicureanism, in fact, can be put into the context of life without really thinking about the philosophy. The history of Epicureanism is important for people because his teachings are simple enough to live by, without submitting. The ethics behind Epicureanism are very simple. Epicurus demonstrates that experience shows happiness is not best attained by directly seeking it. The selfish are not more happy but less so than the unselfish. This statement is very powerful for the simple person. Epicurus proves that if a person seeks to be happy he/she usually won t be able to find true happiness. Epicurus states Thus although virtue is inseparable from pleasure and necessary if we are to be happy, it is to be chosen not for its own sake but for the sake of pleasure. Beauty and the virtues and the like are to be honored if they provide pleasure, but, if they do not, we must say goodbye to them.(Intro. Epicurus, 124) Happiness ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. A View from the Bridge by Miller Miller s A View from the Bridge, originally written in 1956 as a one act play, has many features of a classic Greek tragedy. It is set in the Italian American neighbourhood, situated in Red Hook, near Brooklyn Bridge in New York. It is in this community Miller chooses to dramatise themes of conflict, betrayal, love and obsession. The underlying omerta is present throughout the play and is the reason for the conflict as it is defied by Eddie Carbone, the Italian longshoreman, who destroys himself in a clash between his blind passions and primeval ideas of his own people about right living. In Eddie, Miller creates the classic Italian American family man who strives to be head of the household and goes about with a sense of pride and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Code of honour binds families and the whole neighbourhood with a sense of community, and to betray or defy it is the most disgraceful thing to do as everyone is supposed to look after each other. In a traditional Greek tragedy, the tragic hero upsets the gods or their destiny or a code. So it is fitting, then, that Miller has chosen the Italian American society to situate his tragedy in as it is in this society where he can use the code of silence in the community, the omerta, to replace the gods or destiny which is usually defied by the tragic hero. Miller has shown that respect is a recurring theme throughout the play, and is critical to the tragedy as a whole, as it is present in males. This is manifested in Eddie who repeats his name over and over: Eddie Carbone. Eddie Carbone. Eddie Carbone. The play is centred on respect; it begins with a name ( This one s name is Eddie Carbone ) and ends with the same name repeated three times again. The name represents everything he is, not just physically but socially too it is something the community will hear and immediately have a perception of the person, for example if a person has a good name they are generally respectable . Eddie must have respect for his role as a tragic hero, which he does as he yearns for it throughout the play as he wants to be a masculine figure. This is a crucial ... Augustus Caesar died in A.D. 14, his empire secured and at peace. In the poem My Papa s Waltz, the boy speaks of his father in a disappointed way by saying that he smelled alcohol on his father s breath and his ears kept being scraped by his dad s belt while his father carlessly danced with him. In this poem, the father is potrayed as not one of the greatest father figures that there is. On the other hand, in the poem Do not go gentle into that goodnight, the son is speaking of wise men, strong men, and so forth. He states that when it s their time to face death, they don t go down without a fight. The language in the poem potrays the son s limitless ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 18. Flies With Honey Guilty The critical function of drama , so Robert Brustein tell us, is to arouse the remorse of guilty creatures (382). In Flies with Honey, the underlining theme is guilt: not only Anna s compunction over potentially murdering the girl she is in love with, but also her guilt for having these feelings of love in the first place. This is intended to be portrayed not only through dialogue but having Amy, the alleged murder victim, appear as a manifestation of the protagonist s guilt. In order to present this successfully, I had to understand what it means to write of guilt feelings for the stage and how such structure can affect characters and their authenticity. I also had to explore how this medium can be realised in musical theatre. In very broad terms, there exist two types of plot: one that is driven by action, and one that is driven by characters (Alderson). Because my stageplay is only fifteen or so pages long and takes place in one location, it allowed itself to be more character based. • 19. The Faerie Queene By Edmund Spenser Analysis This week s lecture is on The Faerie Queene by Edmund Spenser. This lecture focuses on Edmund Spenser s life, the sources and influences that created Book I of The Faerie Queene , themes, devices, and meaning, purpose of Book I, and The Legend of the Knight of the Red Cross . Edmund Spenserwas born in 1552 to a modest family of modest means with a similar background such as Marlowe and Shakespeare. Spenser was a well educated man much like Marlowe. Spenser spent his first years of education at the Merchant Taylors School before attending university. Edmund Spenser would go on to receive a Bachelor of Arts and a Masters of Arts from Cambridge University. After university, Spenser would begin a career as a minor civil servant where he was a personal secretary to men of power and influence. His work would lead him to a few minor colonial government posts in Ireland. Afterwards, Edmund Spenser was bestowed a castle and 3,000 acres of land in Munster, Ireland. However, the castle was burned down into a rebel uprising. This was due to Spenser being disrespectful of the Irish and their religion. Edmund Spenser would then go on to be a poet. He was creative and adventurous when it came to his work. His greatest works are The Shepheardes Calendar and The Faerie Queene. Spenser became a great influence to several poets such as Milton and other romantics. In the end, Edmund Spenser became one of the greatest English poets of his time. The Faerie Queene is similar to works of Beowulf because of its Anglo Saxon epics. Also, Book I has a hint of classical and renaissance adventures. The Faerie Queene is a perfect combination of themes and motifs that was already introduced in other assignments. This makes Spenser s The Faerie Queene an epic poem. An epic poem is described as a long narrative in elevated style while presenting characters of high positions in adventures thus forming an organic whole through their relation to a central heroic figure and their development of events that play an important part to the history of a nation or race. The common characteristics of the main character is that the hero is played by a person of importance such who would have a historical or legendary significance. The ... In only a few years these World War II partners turned into enemies locked in a global struggle with military, political, and ideological disputes. Americans and Soviets agreed that culture was an important weapon in the ongoing battle to influence Europe during The Cold War. Muskets used in the American Revolutionary War were outdated and inaccurate when it came to the Civil War. The introduction of the rifle into the Federal Army put the Northern Army leagues ahead of the Southern Army at the battlefield. Because of the highly industrial based economy in the North, the usage of rifled bore firearms became widespread in the Federal Army. Moreover, rifles also saw improvements in loading efficiency, changing the main method of loading to breech loading. Similarly, in the Colt Revolver, there was a cylinder containing the bullets that were to be shot from the Revolver thereby maximizing the efficiency of weapons. In addition to advancements in smaller firearms, the US military also saw improvements in the sector of long range rifles. Muzzle loading muskets from the Revolutionary War were highly inefficient and and extremely dangerous to use. When on the battlefield, trying to load a muzzle loading musket became very complicated. If the soldier loaded a bullet but it got jammed, and they tried to fire, the musket would explode in their face, causing many unnecessary injuries to the soldier force (National Park Service, Evolution of the Breechloader ). The Enlargement Of Nato And European Union Eastern Europe has never had a stable political atmosphere compared to the Western countries, which can be observed as a major threat to any MNC trying to penetrate this market. Most of these countries were under a communist regime and have gained their independence rather recently (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, and Macedonia became independent in early 1990 s, by separating from Yugoslavia, and Moldova, Ukraine and Belarusgained their independence in 1991, with the fall of Soviet Union). The influence of communistic philosophy, therefore, can explain the difficulties these countries were facing when they tried to integrate and approach the West. Even though the enlargement of NATO and European Union was a strategic move to make a political and economic reform in this particular region, which would help it in a better integration with western countries, the recent rise of nationalist and populist forces in several countries in eastern Europe, threatens to undermine the reform process. This essay will in depth argue that in Self Portrait with Paradise Birds, Florine Stettheimer s visually apparent and delicate application of scumbling lines, her carefully particularly thought out application of muted complementary and monochromatic colours, and how she actually makes use of blurred soft edged shapes, all for the most part contribute in influencing unity and emphasis within her self portrait, giving her paintingan overall unearthly ambience. Florine s visually fairly apparent and delicate application of scumbling lines creates an impression of unity , which she has achieved through her use of thin , almost translucent lines being layered on top of each other , which is fairly significant . This technique creates the impactful effect of the paintings background colours emerging towards the foreground, giving the viewer a visual sense of interconnectedness that the natural world simply doesn t provide, excluding opaque objects like glassware sheer curtains as an example. Either way, it can be interpreted that the couple never saw each other before Louise died. Therefore, Louise Mallard may have simply passed away from a heart that was exhausted from her strong initial grief of losing her husband and her new adventurous excitement from gaining freedom (Cunningham 3). The unique ending of The Story of an Hour also contains some irony. During the 1800s, which is the time period that Chopin wrote this short story, men held more respect than women in society, and women were expected to be dependent upon a husband. A critic, Emily Toth, states that Chopin may have included Louise s death at the end of the story to please authors and editors because presenting that a woman may be able to happily live without a husband in the 1890s would be a fanatic idea (Cunningham 4). The multitude of conservative readers in the 1890s could interpret that Louise passed away because she was too independent, but the actual meaning of the death may have very well been because of Louise s joy from finally being dismissed from her husband s control. By using irony, Chopin was able to both please the critics of her time period, and prove a hidden point that women can find joy without a man. In bringing environmental issue into the context, it is true that a feature of environmentally sustainable is not only comfortable to occupy, but also consume small amount of energy. He portrays the desert as a horrific place that no one would like to be in. He then describes the desert as a quiet place to be enjoyed. His audience includes environmentalists and those who love nature. A Few Words for Motherhood Wendell Berry, in his essay A Few Words for Motherhood (), displays the grace and awe of animal birth. He recounts one of his cows giving birth in his barn, he expresses the sentiments he felt: wonder and joy. He presents the cow, who amazingly knew exactly how to confront giving birth with no prior experience. His writing is for everyone interested in animals and animal birth. Here is New York E.B. • 39. Effects Of Adolescence Female Cannabinoid Exposure On Male... The topic of this article is the effects of adolescence female cannabinoid exposure on male offspring s response to opiates. The particular study is important because marijuana is one of the most abused drugs among females. Since women have babies it is important to understand any potential health risk of the cannabinoid exposure on their offspring. Previous studies have shown increased risks of anxiety and depression, as well as decreased motivation and reading comprehension skills (Brynes, 2012, p 1348). The current study looks at whether exposure during adolescence will affect future offspring. Therefore one does not want to alter fetal development, even if the mother is not using during pregnancy. The purpose of the current study was... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Researchers used twenty three year old female Sprague Dawley rats in this experiment. The rats were kept in standard laboratory cages on a light dark cycle in a temperature controlled room. The rats were given seven day to adjust to their new homes before beginning the experiment. When sixteen of the female rats reached thirty days of age they were administered injections of CB1 and CB2. These female rats were the WIN F1 group. Each day injection dosage increased. The first day was a 1kg, second day 2kg, third day 4kg. The female rats were weighed daily. The control group, VEH F1, consisted of sixteen female rats that were administered saline. At 60 days of ages the female rats were mated with colony male rats. On postnatal day 21 male offspring were housed until test began. Only one offspring per litter was used. When the male offspring became 40 or 60 days old they were tested for CPP responses to morphine or saline. Rats were tested in three chambers, which had infrared to track the rat. During preconditioning, day 1, rats were placed in the middle chamber but allowed to go to any of the three chambers. Researchers recorded the amount of time spent in each chamber during 15 minutes. Day 2 morning, the rats were weighed, given saline, and placed in chamber A for 30 minutes. Five hours later rats were administered either saline or morphine and placed in camber B for 30 minutes. Conditioning repeated for 3 days. On the fifth day rats were placed in the middle ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Why Do You Persecute Me It is on this road to Damascus that Paul becomes converted. God questions Paul about his actions Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? . God then blinds Paul and sends him to be baptised by Ananias. Quite unexpectedly, Paul had an experience that transformed the direction of his life . Paul began immediately preaching the word of Godand how Christ was the son of God and was crucified. It is clear to see the effect God had on Paul as all his life he was a dedicated Jew and a zealous Pharisee devoting his life to living it how God would want but in fact he was very wrong, Now in the blinding light he saw Jesushimself as the Messiah. He had wanted to be as perfect a Jew as possible, to live before God, and now it seemed that in fact ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Gold and Its Demand Running Head: Gold and Its Demand Gold and Its Demand In the year 2008, the prices of gold fell down to $9oo from $1,035. This was a drastic downfall in the price of gold in 2008 and this has directly affected investors in a number of ways. The investors suffered losses of large margin and in addition to this, many of the investors had paid from ten to fifty percent of the deposits of their shares and when a downfall occurred in the prices of gold, many of the investors lost almost whole amount of their capital. Beside this, the fall in the prices of gold was less as compared to other equities and commodities (Bohm, 2011, pg 34 39). The year 2008 changed the shape of competition among the gold investors and the main characteristic of this year was the failure of government in the banking industry. The entire economy was suffered in this year and in this year of deflation; the affect on gold was a decrease in price. Gold prices fall to $690, then came back to $800 but then once again fall down due to poor financial conditions. The value of $ which was less at the start of 2008, started to increase during the mid of the year and the economy was becoming better but again at the end of the same year, the value of $ began to decrease and this had a direct impact on the prices of gold. In addition to this, the central bank of different countries started decreasing their interest rates and loans were provided on easy terms and conditions. Interest rate offered by the Swedish ... • 42. Juice Vs. Green Tea The data above proves both our hypothesis and prediction wrong. We hypothesized that the lemon green tea would inhibit the growth of bacteria more than green tea. This is because along with having catechins from the green tea, which interfere with bacterial membrane processes, the lemon green tea had flavonoids from the lemon, which alter enzyme activity, and a low pH, inhibiting acid tolerance and the formation of bacterial biofilm. In both of tests, the green teasolution created a larger zone of inhibition than the green tea with lemon, which is why our hypothesiswas wrong. The water was our negative control, so it created no zone of inhibition and the beach was our positive control, so it always had a zone of inhibition. From the both ... • 43. Imidazoline Essay Present there is an enormous deal of scientific attention in the field of Imidazoline derivatives. Imidazoline is a Nitrogen compound and it can be utilized in organic dyes as nitrogenous electron donors since it introduces additional electron donors at position 2. Because of high molar extinction coefficient Imidazoline and other molecular structures containing nitrogen developed as metal free organic dyes. Usually, metal free organic dyes have the apparent molecular structure of the electron donor element and the acceptor element connected by the conjugated chain (D ПЂ A). 2 imidazoline is a one of the isomer derived from the imidazole. Imidazoline derivatives are pharmaceutically and biologically very significant. • 44. The Tragedy of Gay Marriage Sam Schulman s The Worst Thing About Gay Marriage presents an interesting argument against gay marriage that hinges upon maintaining a traditional form of marriage. He actually claims that gay marriage is unnecessary (381). According to Schulman, there are 4 primary effects of marriage within his definition he calls the kinship system. First, marriageprotects and controls a woman s sexuality. Second, the possible pairings are limited by the kinship system to avoid incest or other taboos. Third, marriage creates a situation where licit sex can occur. Fourth, it places a clear divide between childhood innocence and adult, married, life. All of which is in addition to maintaining a standard family hierarchy, in which a marriage almost... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Marriage has evolved over time. Once, far back in history, when states were run in close cooperation with religious leaders, a marriage was strictly the dominion of the church, and the only definition was much like the one above (though they were more lax in avoiding incest than I would suspect Schulman s proposed structure would be). In the eyes, there had to be a system where sex would be legitimized, while women and children were protected from it and its consequences. This made sense when repeated sex acts would almost definitely cause pregnancy, and possibly spread disease. As religion and government split into different organizations, each retained a definition of marriage that was a bit different from the other. Since religion held sway over what was considered pure and good, it took it upon itself to retain the parts of the old structure that dealt with the morality and social responsibility of marriage, and this is generally considered to be a social structure of marriage. And now, the social form of marriage is migrating into being controlled by the couple who are being married instead of their church. The government, on the other hand, became able to define who would be able to marry and place official benefits and restrictions on a married couple, creating a legal structure of marriage that was not the same as the social one. This law can be applied with or without the approval of the person involved as its ultimate goal is to prevent the person from harming himself or others (Royal College of Nursing, 2015). However, with recent incidence of injuries and even death that has occurred as a result of this kind of treatment has raised doubt in the minds of on an enormous number of people (Mind, 2013). The practice of restraint is more commonly used in acute setting compared to other mental health settings(City University, London, 2009) Argument from health professional is that the use restraint is very vital to their security especially in situations where a patient poses the risk of being a menace to himself or others around them (Psychiatric Times, 2015).A study has showed that the act of violence and aggression against patients and nursing staff is unbelievably rising, with about more than half of NHS staff nurses being violently assaulted by patients in 2013 14 (Nice, 2015). Even though, most of these attacks do not normally result in major injuries, they have caused staff to experience severe anxiety, emotional traumas and in some case post traumatic stress disorder (City University, London, 2009). Against these facts, it is believed that the use of restraint, especially in an Acute setting, is essential and ethical (Psychiatric Times, 2015). However, research has shown that there is a correlation between staffs reaction towards mental health patients and the violent and aggressive behaviour exhibited towards them. This typically occurs when patients feel they are being patronized, not made aware of what is going on around them and not treated well( Glover, 2005). • 47. Vittorio de Sica s The Bicycle Thief Essay Vittorio de Sica s The Bicycle Thief Since the beginning of its existence as a country, Italy has faced enormous challenges in establishing itself as a unified political and social entity. The geographic, economic, and linguistic differences between its various regions and the artificial manner in which they were amalgamated created a legacy of internal divisions that continues to dominate the country s political climate to this day. Italy s numerous historical fiascoes, such as its disastrous involvement in the two World Wars and the rise of fascism, further escalated the domestic problems that had haunted it since the Risorgimento. At first, the anti fascist Resistance movement, which dominated the end of World War II, seemed to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Originally applied to the government of Agostino Depretis in the 1880s, transformismo quickly became equated with any ethically questionable, self interested actions taken by public officials purely for the sake of staying in office and maintaining power. This often manifested itself in the creation of a smoke screen of reformatory rhetoric intended to satisfy the electorate, without a subsequent introduction of any real reforms. The colonialist manner in which Piedmont annexed the other regions to create a united Italy during the Risorgimento and the divisions inherent in the new kingdom resulted in a historical compromise that made any deliberate social change very difficult. Consequently, Italianleaders of the destra storica and sinistra storica (the first two eras of Italian political history) shifted their focus from meaningful governance to the practice of transformismo, permanently shaping the face of Italian political life. The prevailing motto of this practice was captured perfectly in a line from Luchino Visconti s 1963 film, The Leopard: Things must change in order to stay the same. Attendismo, the other type of quasi action, was a tendency of the leftist Italian parties to passively wait for change to occur from the outside, without taking any substantial revolutionary action on their own.
