Introduction
On August 29th, 2005, Hurrican Katrina, a Category 4 hurricane, made landfall. Katrina left severe
destruction along the Golf Coast and evenutally breached the New Orleans levee system putting the
city under water. The death toll was estimated at 1,245 people and an estimated $105 billion dollars
in damage occured (Knabb 2011). During Katrina, command relationships failed because of
political differences between President Bush and Louisiana Governor, Kathleen Blanco as to who
should command the National Guard, delays at the National Guard Bureau (NGB) in deploying
troops and equipment, and failing to create a unity of effort between National Guard and Active
Duty forces.
National Guard
The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina left tens of thousands of people in New Orleans without
adequate water, food, shelter, and physical security. Law enforcement was in disarray as 200 New
Orleans Police officers left their post. The Louisiana National Guard was short on personnel and
much of their equipment was unserviceable due to flooding. Thousands of people needed help and
critical distribution of resources from Defense Support of Civilian Authorities (DSCA) failed.
As New Orleans spiraled out of control, looting and crime were becoming a serious problem. The
Louisiana National Guard focused on rescue missions, rather than keeping Law Order. The public
began to blame President Bush and Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco for their poor response to
the recovery efforts.
In a meeting on Airforce One, President Bush tried to convince Governor Blanco to federalize the
National Guard in order to have all forces under one central command. Governor Blanco refused
this offer, believing that Bush s attempt to federalize the Louisiana National Guard was just attempt
to blame her for post Katrina problems (Farazmand, 2014).
While President Bush and Governor Blanco argued over politics, valuable time was being wasted

opened near Abbottsfield, Edmonton. The school was named after a man named Ivor Dent, he

During the past few weeks in Global Perspectives we explored our personal culture, and the

The partition of India is one of the defining chapters in India s entire history. Although many
different reasons caused the partition, political factors were a key player in bringing about this
monumental change in India s borders. The pre existing communal differences between Hindus
and Muslims grew as a result of the fears of both groups losing power and giving up control to
the other. The partition which was supposed to grant freedom and independence for all Indians
resulted in creating a deeper hatred and animosity which would cost countless lives through

As a young adult, it is really difficult to define what a good life is. A Good life it s an expression
that is interpreted differently by every individual. However, my humanities class helped me
clarify my thoughts about how the term good life could be defined. A good life is living with
ambition and creating new experiences with the ones you love the most. For me, a good life not
only consist of me reaching my goals but it also lies on helping the people around me to reach
their goals. Having the right values and priorities complement a gratifying life. During this
journey, I have learned that analyzing several situations can lead to a great way of associating
ideas and understanding certain events that take place in my life. Medicine is a very rigorous
field of study, therefore I must hold the concept of a good life in order to achieve my goals and
keep my priorities in the right order. Humanities has been a great base for me to develop the right
mindset to pursue my career. For instance, the modules: The True Purpose of a Liberal Education,
Morality and Ethics, Happiness, Nature, and Life Affirmation, were the ones that made the most
significant impact on my perspective in life. In today s society, people are becoming accustomed to
following the popular beliefs instead of thinking in depth and forming their own opinions. In some
cases, it is evident that some individuals deviate away from the obvious which leads them to
