Degree Title:Management with Accounting
Question No. Title:Select a non UK company and obtain its latest annual financial reporting
documents. Introduction
Company s annual financial reporting is an important tool to translate and transfer information of
organization s financial performance to shareholders and users. This report will choose Volkswagen
AG s 2014 annual financial reporting as the example to examine how the company to show its
accounting works.
In this report, it firstly will attempts to examine the external and culture influences on the annual
financial reporting. After that, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These differences dimensions of culture have complex impacts the behavior of accountants such as
preparers, auditors, regulation makers, and as well as on the accounting practices users (Gray,
1988). For examples in the Table 1, it outlines some effects of culture on accounting and financial
statements.
Cultures Effects on accounting behaviors
High uncertainty avoidance and low individualism.Conservative measurement of income, limit
disclosure.
Uncertainty avoidance decreased.Transparency increased.
Table 1.
However, it is difficult to find out specific evidences on the effects of culture on the company s
financial reporting within a large international firm due to some limitations. Firstly, the cultural data
is not reliable in an accounting context (Nobes and Parker, 2012). For example, UK and Germany
use different legal and accounting systems despite both of them are European countries. German
companies are in operating under their own laws and policies. Secondly, compared with the
measurement of direct relevant elements of the external environment of accounting such as legal
systems or equity markets, the measurements of cultural influences within a company accounting
system are vague and indirect (Nobes and parker, 2012). Culture measurement is complex, Hofstede
s theory doesn t consider about the people which come from other countries and minority
population that may have different cultural attributes

Voice Recorder, By Charlie Victor
Charlie Victor Romeo, cockpit voice recorder, is a modern theatrical documentary derived
entirely from the Black Box transcripts of six notable concrete airline emergencies. In this
engaging and intensifying documentary, Charlie Victor Romeo positions the audience into
perspective of being inside a tension filled cockpits of authentic flights in distress, which
proposes an intriguing representation of the sensibility in a mid life crisis and a person s life at
jeopardy. The six transcript samples of previous voice recordings came from various air flights
and incidents such as flights American 1572, American Eagle 4184, Aeroperu 603, USAF Yukla
27, Japan Air 123, and United 232. The film primarily portrays a significant purpose of
entertainment and political motives, but also highlights the issue with aviation safety and the usage
of air tragedies to depict it along with the considerate lack of communication and organization
established. Thus, to establish an epidemic, catastrophic disasters must occur to generate great
awareness for the issue, so for a similar disaster to not transpire again. The play opens with a flight
attendant demonstrating the airplane precautions, safety procedures and reminding passengers to
fasten their seat belts and to turn off all cellular devices. Before each new airline scene played, the
film displays the name of the flight, location of trying to land, and number of passengers and crew
members that were on the flight. To present danger within

A New Approach to Art
A NEW APPROACH I continue to get further away from the usual artists tools; easel, palette,
brushes. I prefer sticks, trowels, knives and dripping fluid paint. My feeling is new needs need
new techniques. It seems to me the modern painter cannot express this age the airplane, the atom
bomb, the radio in the old forms of the Renaissance or any other past culture. Jackson Pollock
(1950) It is apparent from the quote mentioned above that Art has undergone rapid transformation
from the 20th century. Everything had been declared a fair game. Almost anything and
everything was considered as art. 20th century art had played a pivotal role in defying
conventions. Besides this art was no longer restricted to things that looked aesthetically appealing
but was far beyond that. Artworks were no longer perceived as static objects with a singular
meaning. Artists challenged the very old definition of art by adding or rather including a lot more
to it. Art was no longer restricted to something that is visually appealing but also to something that
addressed a variety of issues. They believed in using art as a platform in representing or addressing
multiple socio political, cultural and community based issues. Also, their work expanded far
beyond the institutional confines of the gallery or museum space. Artists have now produced a
variety of works whose meaning cannot be understood otherwise because their context is very
crucial to the piece of art. Many times the collection

Personal Narrative Essay On Social Day
The first Friday of May was one of the first sunny days in a long time, probably since November.
Wearing my Wellesley College worn out, navy blue hoodie, black Nike s, and black yoga pants,
I was dressed for a comfort. I remember that after my modern world history class, I did not feel
the inspiration to go to the library and study, so I met up with a few friends at the lockers next to
the student center to eat junk food, do homework, and listen to music. My purple, patterned
backpack landed on the on the rough carpet with a thud, and since I was not in the most social
mood, I took out my laptop and started jamming out to music. I plugged in my earbuds, got a bag
of chips, and started listening to Beyonce. Friday, May 5th was... Show more content on

In fact, the day before the fifth, two of my friends and I talked about Sally s depression and
suicidal thoughts; we knew something was wrong. The first thing I noticed when I entered into
the now cloudy light outside was how cold it was; too cold to be May. I was brought out my
thoughts by soft sobs and remembered the task at hand: getting Sally back to her dorm. The first
challenge was getting past the frisbee team practicing on the quad, so grabbing Sally by the
hand, I pulled her over to the back of Straus and sat behind a tree in the damp grass in
excruciating silence. I finally asked, Hey, Sal? Could you tell me what s going on? She
screamed, which in the wide open quad inducing some of the frisbee players to glance over,
curious as to what was going on. I immediately grabbed Sally s hand and made her take deep
breaths. She leaned back on the tree and sighed, calming down a bit. Eventually we walked
down the long path past the flagpole and the chapel, through the Hallowell passage, and to Sally
s dorm. She opened the door of her dorm, and we walked down the long hallway to her room. I
made Sally sit down on her bed and take three deep breaths while I got a glass of water. We sat in
silence for what seemed like an eternity. Sally? I said, breaking the everlasting noiselessness, What

Losses . Losses covers 9 neurological disorderswhich are characterised by a loss of some kind.
Dr. P, a musician and teacher who had developed visual agnosia, had difficulty processing what he

causing a neurological condition.
Mr MacGregor has Parkinson s disease, he lost his sense of balance, but never fell over, he would

once he realised Mr MacGregor s ears were not restoring his balance.
Dr. Sacks heard laughter when the president s speech came on in the aphasia ward, as they hear
speech with no depersonalisation, they were humoured by his lies . Emily D. has a glioma in
her right temporal lobe, so she has tonal agnosia. Emily heard the speech with no tone, no
expression, this led Emily to be unmoved by the president s speech and she found it very difficult
to be deceived. Dr Sacks tells us that it is the brain damaged patients who are less likely to be

Zinc s Four Levels
Zinc has an atomic structure of 4 levels. As shown above, these are the 4 shells.
The four levels display their individual energy, overall adding up to the atomic number of 30. This
can be seen below.
First energy level: 2
Second energy level: 8
Third energy level: 18
Fourth energy level: 2
Total energy level: 30
Where is Zinc located in the Periodic Table ???
Zinc can be found in Period 1 and Group 4 on the periodic table ( In red at the bottom)
This is because of the atomic number that zinc contains and therefore that is why zinc is placed in
that order in the periodic table

The elemental symbol for Zinc is Zn, however the compound Zinc Sulphate has the formula of
ZnSO4.
The number of uses of Zinc in element and compound form
There are many uses of zinc in both elemental and compound form.
A major use for zinc metal is its industrial use. Zinc is involved in the galvanising process of iron
as well as steel s resistance to a chemical reaction made in the environment known as corrosion.
Alternatively, zinc is also used for medicinal purposes. It is the most essential chemical for human
functioning. Zinc sulphate also plays the same role as the normal element zinc
Zinc is a shiny silvery and bluish element.
Zinc can be used together with many other elements to form alloys. For example, Brass is an alloy
of zinc and copper mixed together.
Most air changes (discolours) zinc. However, with a thin layer of a coating, the zinc cannot be
oxidised.
There is little evidence for the Greeks showing that they had known of the existence of zinc . They
also claim that the called the zinc false silver , but had a reasoning that they could not produce
abundant amounts of

Essay about Jimi Hendrix
On November 27, 1942, in Seattle, Washington a later to be known legend was born as James
Marshall. This future guitar master went by the name of Jimi, Jimi Hendrix. His childhood was
not very fortunate, however, he did indulge himself in one particular way: Jimi loved to play the
guitar. Jimi could never afford to take lessons so he taught himself. At first he played an old
acoustic guitar, and later a cheap Silvertone electric. Both of these guitarswere both strung for a
lefty on a right handed guitar, one of the defining Hendrixtraits. Jimi would have preferred to play
a guitar that was made for lefty s but his parents wouldn t pay the extra money because they were
extremely poor.
As a teenager, young Jimi listened to typical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jimi and Chandler had decided upon a trio with Hendrix on guitar and vocals, Mitch Mitchell on
drums, and Noel Redding on bass.
The first album was recorded and released with the name of, Are You Experienced? on May 12,
1967 in England. After its initial success there, the album was released on August 26, 1967 in the
United States. Of the single ?Hey Joe,? which was the first song recorded for Are You
Experienced?, Hendrix said: ?It?s a commercial record,. but everyone found that better for the first
time. It?s just a phase, it?s only a very small part of us.?
Another Hendrix tune from Are You Experienced? was ?Purple Haze.? Many people have the
conception that the song Purple Haze is about drugs. Anyone who thinks that Purple Haze is
about drugs is entirely wrong. Purple Haze was written by Jimi shortly after a dream he had. In
the dream, Jimi was walking under the sea, surrounded by purple haze. He became lost and Jesus
saved him . The song was originally called ?Purple Haze Jesus saves.? Purple Haze was described
as ?the band?s break through single in America? This song was the one that had really sparked
Hendrix s album sales. After Purple Haze, Hendrix was known as a rock star, and people demanded
to hear more.
Jimi s second album entitled Axis: Bold as Love was an immediate success. This album expressed
the way Jimi felt about being an Indian

Lancastrian Exceptionalism In Shakespeare s Second Neutralogy
Lancastrian Exceptionalism: Crisis and the Crown in Shakespeare s Second Tetralogy Sovereign,
argues Carl Schmitt, is he who decides on the exception (5). Far from the only definition of
sovereignty available to us, this narrow understanding, he continues, is a borderline case and
not...routine. Indeed, the exception is to be understood to refer to a general concept in the theory
of the state, and not merely to a construct applied to any emergency decree or state of siege. Thus,
because [t]he exception...is not codified in the existing legal order, it must necessarily be
characterized as a case of extreme peril, a danger to the existence of the state (6). Conversely, in
non crisis situations, Schmitt implies, we should expect the law rather than the will of the head of
state to clearly delineate... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This way, the head of state does not normally have sovereign power to dictate his will over his
own laws, precisely because the lack of emergency prevents him from acting autocratically. If we
apply Schmitt s theory to late mediaeval English history, we see that he is largely correct, at
least insofar as the royal succession is concerned. Consider the century of stable succession in
England from Edward I s accession in 1274 to Richard II s in 1377, for example. With each king
s demise, there was no question as to who would inherit the crown. Even in the case of Edward II
s violent deposal and murder not simply a single, tumultuous event but rather a gradual erosion of
the king s authority in the years before his overthrow Schmitt s theory holds true. As there was no
immediate crisis of authority, there was no opportunity for a sovereign to step forward and seize
upon the exception, and the young Edward III came to the throne almost automatically, as expected
and indeed as the law dictated. In contrast, the Lancastrian kings who followed Richard II Henry
IV, and his son Henry

The Colonialization Of Italy And The Colonization Of Libya
Italy, like most countries, conquered other countries for the purpose of benefitting their economic
and political needs. According to Martin Moore, What in effect is taking place is a State financed
and officially organised mass migration of Europeans, from an over crowded temperate Europe, to
a barren non European country overseas (Moore 1). However, Italywas the last country to explore
and conquer the land in Africa, which limited the amount of land available to them. This was shown
in the colonization of Libya. Libya was not a country that was ideal to colonize because of their
stationary civilization and monotheistic religion. Regardless, Italy was determined to conquer this
land for the benefit of the natives and Italy itself. Carlo Schanzer writes, In short, Italy wishes to
govern her African colonies by introducing her surplus man power among backward populations
and integrating the two, never by unnecessarily substituting the former for the latter (Schanzer 448).
Italy intended to do this through focusing on giving justice, order, hygiene, communications, and
education to Libya. In order to further their goal, Italy wanted to focus on the sanitation issue
facing Libya. According to the Italian Colonial Policy in North Africa, it states, Italy colonizes not
only with her sword, however, but also with the aid of her doctors and her teachers (Schanzer 449).
Statesman, Francesco Crispi, built many Italian schools and hospitals on the Mediterranean coast,

Stereotypes Of Men And Women In The Game Of Thrones
In today s society, men and women are looked at as equal, but it was not always like that. HBO s
famous TV show, The Game of Thrones, contradicts that. First of all, it is just a TV show, which
means it could have, and does have, some exaggerated parts, but it gives a representation of what
life was like for both males and females in the medieval times. In the show, Game of Thrones, the
producer goes against the stereotype that women cannot hold positions of power as well as men
can. Game of Thrones is a TV show that is about several families that fight to sit on the iron
throne to occupy all seven kingdoms, which takes place in a fictional land called Westeros. When
conflict arises, the different families will have to choose who to become... Show more content on

her husband, Khal Drogo, and being sexually assaulted by her brother, Viserys Targaryen, to not

at the new idea, in 1962, and called it crypto feminism. Women started to look at their roles in

Salivary Amylase Lab Report
The name of enzyme involved in this experiment is salivary amylase, which presents in our saliva.
Salivary amylase catalyses the breakdown of complex sugar, such as starch, into a simple sugar,
such as glucose. In this experiment, the optimum temperature for salivary amylase to function is
37ЛљC. Above the optimum temperature, the kinetic energy in the substrate and enzymeincreases.
The number of collisions between substrate and enzyme also increases, but the formation of
enzyme substrate complex decreases. This is because the increasing of kinetic energy causes the
amino acid molecules to vibrate violently. Some bonds like hydrogen and ionic bonds which hold
the configuration of the enzyme break. The shape of active site of the enzyme... Show more content

In solution B, reducing sugar is absent because the result for Benedict s test is negative. However,
the result for iodine test is positive, which indicates starch is present in solution B. In test tubes 1
and 3, reducing sugar is present after reacted in 37ЛљC and 95ЛљC respectively because it show
positive result when tested with Benedict s reagent. So, the structure of the sugar in solution A is
simpler, while the structure of the sugar in solution B is more complex as it needs salivary
amylase or hydrochloric acid to hydrolyze before it gives positive result for Benedict s test.
Iodine test is used to detect the presence of starch in a solution. When starch presents, iodine
changes its colour from yellow to dark purple. Benedict s test is used to detect the presence of
reducing sugar in a solution. When reducing sugar presents, a brick red precipitate appears in the
solution. Benedict reagent contains copper (II) ions, which is blue in colour can be reduced to
copper (I) ions, which is insoluble brick red precipitate when reducing sugar is present.
Carbohydrate B is more complex than carbohydrate A, because salivary amylase or hydrochloric
acid is needed at 37ЛљC and 95ЛљC respectively to be hydrolyzed into monomers before it gives
positive result for Benedict s test. In conclusion, solution A contains simple sugar and solution B
contains starch.

Patrick Slush Descriptive Writing
There is nothing more terribly beautiful than the snow stricken streets of New York City.
Beneath a greying evening sky, and between tall buildings of steel, are big flakes of swirling
snow that drift and lightly cover every street lamp, branch, shoulder and patch of pavement
untouched by moving feet. Patrick Sole, a man without a home, is slumped, in wet, grey slush,
against a brick wall. He does not twitch, he does not tremble. And if white begins to blanket his
tattered coat, and if his frostnipped fingers begin to numb; well, he does not stir. For how long he
has sat there, he does not know, for he looks and feels as white as a ghost.
With an icy puff of breath, Patrick blinks slowly and blankly observes the blur of faces before
him. As the evening sky blackens, the bustle of the street grows noisier and is lit vividly by street
lamps, lights, cars and electronic billboards. It is at that moment Patrick wonders: how can one be
so lonely in a city with over nineteen million souls?

At First, I Tried To Focus On My Own Rhythm As I Did While
At first, I tried to focus on my own rhythm as I did while playing the gyil. I quickly discovered that
this was doomed to failure; I could not keep time with the multitude of pulsing beats around me. I
then tried putting the rhythm in my hands only, and backing my focus up to encompass the entire
ensemble. The concept of polyrhythm as intertwined parts creating a complex whole finally clicked.
My perception of the astsiagbekor suddenly shifted from individual parts surrounded by unrelated

Standardization of pitch or lack thereof strongly influences a cultures system of notation. It must be
mentioned that innumerable cultures do not notate their music, it is passed on in person and by
memory. Western music uses the beginning of the Latin alphabet to name pitches. These pitches
are also assigned places on a staff of lines and spaces as indicated by a clef. I find this system the
most functional because it is a visual representation of pitch, rhythm, intervals, relativity, and how
multiple parts line up. Indonesian gamelan uses a cipher notation. Each gamelan ensemble has its
own unique tuning, so the pitched sounds of each instrument are assigned corresponding numbers.
Cipher notation indicates pitch with numbers and rhythm with their spacing. I thought that this
would be difficult to get used to. In reality, it was actually simple and easy to understand. This
system places emphasis on the importance of listening to the ensemble rather than focusing only on
one s individual part of the score because the other instruments indicate when and what to play. I
enjoyed my experience with gamelan, the instruments are fun to play, the music is pleasant to hear,
and the ensemble emphasizes a form of unity that can only be found in making music together.
Fourth, forms of music structure. A structure common in various forms around the world is call and

The Myth Of The Ant Queen
While technology is commonly thought of as inventions and gadgets, anything that humans have
developed for specific purposes or to accomplish certain goals, such as methods or models, must
also be correctly categorized as such. In Cathy Davidson s essay Project Classroom Makeover, she
discusses a few unconventional forms of technology such as the educational classroom paradigm
and standardization. Similarly, in Steve Johnson s essay The Myth of the Ant Queen, he presents
procedural technology, such as self organizing systems, and conceptual technology, collaborative
intelligence. He then utilizes another conceptual form of technology, the complexity theory, to
interpret these systems seemingly uncoordinated patterns. Sherry Turkle branches off of Davidson
and Johnson s ideas by discussing the consequences of questioning what makes a robot alive in her
essay Alone Together. This narrative highlights the technology s effect on humans and the reality of
robots either improving or diminishing an individual s quality of life. Besides the slight
apprehension of its future usage, humans are mesmerized by the promising potential technology
presents. Additionally, structural or paradigmatic technology is deeply intertwined and inherent
within society s functioning, making it impossible to separate technology from human existence.
Models and frameworks for systems, also known as paradigms, are innate in all organizations and

thing as polluting the air or polluting a river. However, both polluting the air and polluting a river

slow method of murder, in this sense. However, we will focus more on the ethical rebuttals now.
Following on Rodin s lawyer homeowner example, one could point to the moral importance of the
benefits that accrue to society as a whole from the practice of managing assets so as to maximize
returns. Rodin continues, saying that such a practice helps to achieve the most economically
efficient distribution of resources, which benefits the society as a whole. As an example he
considers the case where maximization of returns by converting the building would increase

The Aim Of Art. Artists All Over The World Explore Different
The aim of art
Artists all over the world explore different concepts though their art. The environment is
increasingly becoming an important topic of discussion; as well as a much more personal subject
for everyone, let alone artists. Because of the increasing amounts of damage to the earth, many
artists have participated in this movement in hope to show the public the beauty in nature. Three
artists, in particular, express their concept of environment in a physical representation to be
interpreted by their audience in all sorts of ways. William Robinson, shows the beauty of simplicity

inward significance. For example, in his piece JACARANDA WITH GINGER AND LILIES

his backyard. The Australian jacaranda tree was painted in 2014, it was appealing as it was
fluorescently decorated and had a dreamlike atmosphere; this was combined with the other plants
and flowers in the artwork so that there it was intensely saturated in pigment, showing his
backyard is his heaven. Robinson paints what he sees while combining it with how he feels
about what he sees. Making his art unique and an expression his passion. He seeks an
environment that influences his work as a life spring... Make a life, create your art out of this life

As I was reading through the different theories of language, I found myself relating to all of them
in some aspect. However, I relate mostly with the constructivist theory and have seen the benefits of
this theory play out in my own classroom.
My first year of teaching was at an international school in South Korea. The curriculum was based
mainly around rote memorization and testing. The students in my third grade class were required
to use basal readers and take weekly tests based on vocabulary and comprehension. Some students
did well and others struggled, especially students who were English language learners. What the

One topic of conversation that arose was about the animals, insects, reptiles and amphibians that

short chapter book Frog and Toad are best friends who enjoy different adventures together. It is a
wonderful example of friendship and loyalty. For this particular lesson students were analyzing
their character traits. As I was observing and participating in discussions around the classroom, I
realized that many of the students were wondering about the difference between a frog and toad
and wondering if the characters in the book reflected these differences. These insights made me
realize that we should shift the focus and research these differences. I contacted the librarian and
he suggested I read them All About Frogs by Jim Arnosky. Thus I choose this book as my
expository example. This book provided a wealth of information and vivid illustrations about
different types of frogs and toads. The students were extremely engaged in learning more about

Channel Partitioning Essay
In data communication, they are always striving to increase throughput, this would include
allowing nodes to transmit information over a single broadcast link without interfering with each
other. To achieve this, multiple access protocols coordinate the transmission. There are three classes
of multiple access protocols, random access, taking turns and channel partitioning. With random
access protocol, each node tries to randomly to access the complete broadcast link, without any
regard to the other nodes. Taking turns protocol utilizes some type of turning mechanism, which
designates which node is allowed to transmit. Channel partitioning protocol divides the channel

There are numerous of taking turn protocols, two are polling protocol and token passing
protocol. The polling protocol requires one of the node to be designated as a master node. The
master polls each of the nodes in a round robin fashion. The master first sends a message to node
1, saying that it can transmit. After node 1 transmits, the master sends a message to node 2 it
can transmit The master determines when a node has finished sending its frames by observing
the lack of a signal on the channel. The procedure continues in this manner, with the master
polling each of the nodes in a cyclic manner. (Kurose 459) An advantage of this type of protocol
is it avoids collisions, since nodes are only allowed to transmit when they are given access to the
channel. Disadvantage to polling, are delays, as transmitters have to wait for the poll and the
centralization with the requirement for a master to conduct the polling, if it fails the entire
channel becomes inoperative. Token passing protocol there is no master node, instead special
purpose frame known as a token is exchanged among the nodes in some order. When a node
receives a token, it holds onto the token only if it has some frames to transmit; otherwise, it
immediately forwards the token to the next node. If a node does have frames to transmit when it
receives the token, it sends up to a maximum number of frames and then forwards the token to the
next node. (Kurose 459) Advantage of token passing protocol is it

Cannibalism Is Not Illegal ( Eveleth )
The Other, Other, White Meat
We had to eat these dead bodies, and that was it , this is what Andes plane crash survivor, Roberto
Canessa, had to say on his experience with cannibalism. Cannibalism is the consumption of a
member of the same species. Consuming human flesh is not against the law in the United States,
therefore cannibalism is not illegal (Eveleth). In the eyes of the law, murdering someone to eat is
wrong, but the act of eating a human is not. To Americans the simple thought of eating another
human is sickening. To most that is true, but to others consuming human flesh is a way of life.
Some cultures practice cannibalism for their own spiritual beliefs and others have to eat human
flesh to survive. Human flesh has proteins most want when eating meat. The act of eating human
meat has gotten a bad reputation over the years, looking back in history, people thousands of

not know enough about. People eat people for a variety of reasons, the most well known being
killers getting a thrill from eating their victims. Although not everyone who is a cannibal gets a

Conflict Resolution And Child Custody
Conflict Resolution Child Custody
As a future marital and family therapist and even as a trainee, it is important to understand the
systemic thinking behind the practice. For those therapists, like myself, that want to become
experts in more an area, it is also important to delve into the theory and practice of that area. For
example, child custody is a big piece to conflict resolution when it comes to thinking systemically in
the family. The current divorce rate is around 50 percent and ever rising, which can be troubling yet
promising when it comes to the mediation field.
For the judicial system, this causes case overload, tired workers, and a lot of fees for the citizens
going to the family courts. One of the biggest things that could potentially stop a family from
being happy with their results is if the courts assign them custody agreements without thinking
about each individual factor. Each family is different and there is no cookie cutter answer when it
comes to child custody. If the family is assigned a family mediator, not only will it save long term
costs, it can help ensure each party feels heard and they are voluntarily agreeing to the terms.

The First Retirement Plan Of The United States Essay
The first retirement plan created in the United States, is one that the majority of us are familiar,
the Social Security Act, signed under law in 1935. Up until 1939, Social Security only paid
retirement benefits to primary workers, which for the most part were men. Age 65 was chosen as
the retirement age because individuals who survived past childhood were likely to live past 65.
However, not everyone benefited from such assistance, even after age 65 agricultural and domestic
workers were excluded from coverage (DeWitt, 2010). The excluded group consisted of roughly
half of workers contributing to the economy, which the majority were African Americans.
According to Larry DeWitt, a public historian from the Social Security Administration, exclusion of
such groups was due to tax collection procedures and not due to racial bias. Although it may seem
as though Social Security was meant to be the only form of retirementplan for qualified retirees, it
was not. During such time, many individuals strongly depended on their savings as well as on
their family. Today, the certainty of receiving sufficient benefits solely from Social Security for a
quality standard of living after retirement is indefinite. Baby boomers individuals born post World

Mining into Devastation
Introduction
Mining affects the lives of millions of Americans every day. Although the United
States has a large amount of coal remaining to be mined and burned, almost three fourths of the
public land in America has been declared off limits for mining. Mountaintop mining is a relatively
new form of surface mining that has steadily gained popularity. The debate as to whether or not this
process is an economic necessity or environmental disaster for Kentuckians is the question.
Undoubtedly, it is an environmental disaster and it should be removed in every state that they are
using it not to mention the health hazards. One report found states, Although dozens of new coal
burning power plants are planned or under construction, the latest coal boom is meeting resistance
from critics who want to shift the U.S. economy toward cleaner fuels. Even if electricity from coal
is cheaper than other sources, they argue, the savings are far outweighed by its environmental and

Unity of a Family Explored in The Grapes of Wrath
One would say that on a literal level The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck is about the Joad
family s journey to California during The Dust Bowl. However, it is also about the unity of a
family and the concept of birth and death, both literal and abstract. Along with this, the idea of a
family unit is explored through these births and deaths.
As can be seen in The Grapes of Wrath, the Joads are a very tight knit family. Yet on their trip to
California, they experience many losses and additions to their family. In general, Steinbeck s
novel abides by the circle of life. When a birth occurs, a death follows, and when a death occurs, a

In Chapter Thirteen, Grampa does die, as he was never truly the same once he left his land. This
is because the land goes back to Grampa s ancestry, and losing the land is like losing a family
member. This is the Joad family s first run in with death on their journey, yet Ma Joadstill manages
to keep the family together.
Moreover, in Chapter Thirteen, as the Joad family continues on their journey, they meet the Wilson
family. The two families decide to carry on with their trip together. It is at this point that Steinbeck
follows the pattern of the circle of life. Steinbeck begins by writing about the rebirth of Tom Joad.
Next, Grampa dies. Following this, there is a birth for the Joads when they add the Wilson
family to their own. However, as previously stated, in order to represent the hardships of the
journey, many more deaths than births occur in the novel. In Chapter Eighteen alone, Noah
leaves the family, the Joads continue on without the Wilson family, and Granma dies. It may
seem like these losses would tear the family apart, but Ma Joad understands the concept of
family, and tries her hardest to keep the family as one unit. For example, Ma Joad sits up all night

Population Growth in Perspective
Introduction
To anyone even remotely acquainted with the situation, the ever expanding world population can
easily be a cause of grave concern. Indeed, the simple realization that the total world population
will most likely be doubling within the next century may seem to imply catastrophe. Considering
the strain our current huge population puts on the world, is it not natural to presume that two
times our number will spell disaster? While this is the view held by many prominent voices, there
also is a less noticed group of people who contend that the resiliency of the earth and the ingenuity
of its people will keep the planet a decent place to live.
In this paper, I attempt to critically examine ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Generally, people have operated under the assumption that the world was (or was on its way to
being) overpopulated.
I began my research in this topic with the same outlook. I initially wanted to research
overpopulation because I was deeply concerned with its implications. I wanted to understand the
causes of population growth and to learn what might be done to ameliorate the problem. Soon into
the research, however, I happened upon pieces of literature opposing the idea of an overpopulation
crisis and immediately respected certain aspects of their arguments. Quickly, I was forced to
change the scope of my question from what will be the consequences of overpopulation? to what
exactly does overpopulation mean? and does an overpopulation problem even exist? .
History of Population Crises
The seed of my doubt that an overpopulation crisis was imminent was planted when I began to
examine the historical record of population concerns. As a history major, I have at least some
respect for patterns in history. While I recognize that new things can emerge, often a current event
is a variant on an earlier expressed theme.
Regarding population, the first documented concerns over population size date from a Babylonian

The United States had many ways to try and achieve it s goals in Latin America.
The United States Congress passed the Foraker Act, which established a civil government in Puerto
Rico. This act authorized the President of the U.S. to appoint a governor and part of the Puerto
Rican island legislature.
The U.S. established Cuban as a protectorate. The Treaty of Paris granted Cuba its independence,
but the U.S. Army didn t want to withdraw from the island until the year 1902. The Platt
Amendment restricted the rights of newly independent Cubans and effectively brought the island
with the U.S. sphere. This amendment prevented Cuba from signing a treaty with another nation
without American approval. It also allowed the U.S. the right to intervene to preserve order in
Cuba. Cuba eventually agreed with the Platt Amendment and added it to it s constitution. This
treaty made Cuba a protectorate of the U.S. and governed their relationship for many years.
Theodore Roosevelt developed a policy for the U.S. action in Latin America. It is called big stick
diplomacy because it depended on a strong military to help achieve America s goals. ... Show more

During the late 1800s, a French company had tried to link the Atlantic to the Pacific across the
Isthmus of Panama but failed. The French had abandoned the attempt to build and convinced the

million. Roosevelt stepped in and dispatched warships to the waters off Panama to support a
Panamanian rebellion against Colombia. Soon after that, Panama declared its independence from
Colombia. Panama immediately granted America control over the canal zone. America payed

Rate of unemployment The definition of Unemployment is given by International Labour

. The rate of unemployment increased in Bangladesh during the 10 year period (1999 2000 to
2010). According to Labour Force Survey, 2010 the rate of unemployment stood at 4.5 percent
in 2010 which was 4.3 percent in 1999 2000. Furthermore, one of the most crucial findings is
that the rate of unemployment for female has been decreasing; on the other hand, this rate has
been increasing for male in the mentioned period (Basak,2013). For the female, the rates of
unemployment were 7.8 percent and 5.8 percent in 1999 2000 and 2010 respectively, whereas
those were 3.4 percent and 4.1 percent for male for the corresponding years. Moreover, this rate
was significantly higher in urban areas compared to rural areas in 2010. In rural areas, the rate of
unemployment was only 4 percent, whereas at urban areas, it was 6.5 percent. besides this, the rate

Detention Center Case Study
Imagine you are taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Now
imagine that you are experiencing nausea, diarrhea and rectal bleeding accompanied by a high
fever. You would expect, and have every reason to expect that you would be given proper
medical treatment, right? Wrong. Your poor condition is ignored by any and all ICE officials. A
week later, you submit a sick slip that lists your symptoms and your dire need for medical
attention. Finally, after two grueling days, you are scheduled for a medical appointment in which
the doctor on duty fails to acknowledge your rapid weight loss and the severity of your bloody
stool. In a week, you have lost 15 pounds. A month passes and you finally are ordered lab tests.

The detention center? You? Or neither of you at all? This was a real life scenario lived by Amra
Miletic, a 47 year old Bosnian woman at the Weber County Correctional Facility in Ogden, Utah.
In this particular case, the detention center was non compliant with two standards for medical
care: Section (II)(2) and Section (III)(D). Section (II)(2) states that facilities are to provide their
population of detainees with initial medical screening, cost effective medical care, and
emergency care. Section (III)(D) states that every new arrival shall receive immediate medical
and mental health screening. Health appraisals and physical examinations are to occur within
two weeks of arrival (American Civil Liberties Union 8). The case of Amra Miletic is only one of
the many cases of medical negligence in immigration detention centers across America. Since
2003, there have been a total of 155 deaths (Galvan). It is an issue that has been occurring in ICE
detentions across the country for years. All of these death cases have proved wrongdoing by ICE s
medical staff, however they continue to pass their routine annual

Greece, Religion, And Beliefs In Ancient Greece
Essay Plan and Bibliography
Introduction: By the early seventh century BCE, the Greeks had formed independent city states (or
poleis) such as Athens, Sparta, Corinth and Thebes. Although they always fought for territory, they
were largely linked together in many ways such as; Male dominance, Religion/Beliefs and a system
of government.
Point 1: The Greek city states were largely male dominated. According to Darlington, men could
only vote, boys could only go to school, girls were married to men twice their age and a woman s
only job was to bear children (especially boys). All the Greek city states felt men were more
important. In Sparta, women could own land, women actually ended up owning more land than
men, but they still couldn t vote. In Athens men controlled everything that happened in the home.
Marriage feasts were one of the only occasions where the women could celebrate. This links the
Greek city states together as their society valued men above all others (children and women) ...

They all worshipped the same Gods, such as Zeus. The Greek city states didn t even regard their
beliefs as religion, as it was part of their culture largely. Another part of their beliefs were;
Oracles (told the future) and Myths. According to Myths, Delphi was a sacred place and had the
most important oracle, Delphi was also the navel of the world . The city states also considered
Olympia and Delphi sacred places, as well as their own local places. They even had the Olympic
Games where they all gathered to worship and honour Zeus. This links them as they all had the
same beliefs, and came together to celebrate these

Mung Beans
Abstract
The Seeds of Mung bean, wheat, and silver beet were tested in environments of differing salinities
to note down if high salinity environments were worse for the seeds. It was found that generally
lower concentrations were better for germination then higher concentrations. Despite this, the
hypothesis was not completely supported as in wheat and silver beet the second concentration had a
higher rate of germination than the control and in all instances the highest concentration had a
higher germination rate than the second highest concentration.

Because less water is taken up, more water remains, and when the water evaporates from the
soil, salt which has been low below ground for millions of years is brought to the surface,
surrounding these new plants and depriving them of further water (DENR SA, 2010). This
process can be made worse by the irrigation of crops, which result in more water soaking into the
soil and thus more water to evaporate and carry salt to the soil s surface (DENR SA, 2010).
An example of a plant adapted to high salinity environments is the mangrove. The mangrove is a
halophilous plant, meaning that it is a plant that grows in saline soils and waters (Conservancy
Association, 2010). This gives it an advantage as not many plants can live in these conditions. The
mangrove handles these high salinity conditions in a number of methods. The first method is
through salt exclusion, which is the process the mangrove uses to prevent salt from entering its
roots and therefore stopping it being transported to the plant cells (Conservancy Association, 2010).
Despite this, some salt still gets through to the cells, and there are more methods to deal with it.
With mangroves such as the Black Mangrove, salt can be excreted through its tissues, through
specific salt glands (Conservancy Association, 2010). Another method is the storage of this salt on
the leaves of the plant, in the form of crystals. These leaves then drop to the ground, taking this salt
with them (Conservancy

Hence they are able to foresee the possible outcomes of the task and this will help the group to
effectively communicate with vision of the possible solution. This kind of personality is clearly
found on someone who is the go getter and someone who is creative. Thinking/Feeling
Psychological Types ( 2008b) explains that Thinking is an ability to deal with information on the
basis of its structure and its function. Feeling is an ability to deal with information on the basis
of its initial energetic condition and its interactions , people with this kind of personality
(thinking) are more in the decision making side. Someone with thinking personality has the
greater ability of doing things in logical manner and he tends to pay more attention on the bigger
picture of the given task. People with the feeling personality type are more concerned about
feelings of other individuals and they are more ethical, which makes them to be good in
developing team dynamics. Team with good ethical rules they tend to be more effective and
produce quality results. In any working environment there will be some times conflicts and
sometimes conflicts can lead a group to informed or uninformed decisions. So people with the
feeling personality don t like conflicts and that could be their weak link, because when working as

invested by the below parties: * Synenergy Diversified Capital committed capital of $6.25
million * Opportunity Capital Corporation $150,000 * Opportunity Capital Partners $600,000
The $7 million is in the form of subordinated debentures that matures in 7 years with an interest
rate of 13%. This rate is very high because subordinated debentures investors bear significantly
more risk, which is a major drawback of this form of investment since the debt might not be
repaid. The biggest benefit for Dogloo to issue subordinated debenture is that the subordination
makes the debt being accounted in the company s equity based on the balance sheet. This
effectively improves the company s leverage ratios and allows the company to obtain future loans
more easily. Analysis Return on Investment OCC and OCP together invested $750,000 into
Dogloo in the form of subordinated debenture with 13% interest rate, which guarantees them
stable interest cash inflows each year (Exhibit 4). The two investors combined ownership interest
will be 0.5% of the Dogloo s equity value because the company s equity valuation is $213 million,
exceeding $80 million; this will be the cash inflow at exit for the investors. Through calculation,
the required equity value at exit is $238 million if the investors have an estimated IRR of 25%

Dunshy V. Court Case Summary
A contract is considered a legally binding agreement. A valid contract is an agreement that is
binding and enforceable. A contract is not enforced if one of the parties involved has a lack of
capacity. When lack of capacity is determiend a contract is voidable. A contract signed by a
minor can be avoided because anyone under the age of 18 is a minor and minors are not legally
capable of signing contracts. Since Alex signed the contract at the age of 16, it is not a binding
contract.
Quasi contracts are required by the court to prevent unjust enhancements when there is a dispute
over payment. Technically the courts could hold the Dunphy s responsible for payment. Quasi
contractual liability would not be imposed if the Dunphy s were on vacation in Hawaii and were
unaware that the work was completed. The Dunphy s would not be responsible for the completed
work or payment in this situation. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The court could rule that the Dunphy s pay for the services provided, but because Alex is a

disaffirm a contract is not affected even if what has been received has been spent, used, damaged,
or destroyed. Common law rule states, minors can thus refuse to pay for items received under a
contract. (Twomey et al. , 2017). Since the service was completed under a contract signed by a

These differences dimensions of culture have complex impacts the behavior of accountants such as preparers, auditors, regulation makers, and as well as on the accounting practices users (Gray, 1988). For examples in the Table 1, it outlines some effects of culture on accounting and financial statements. Cultures Effects on accounting behaviors High uncertainty avoidance and low individualism.Conservative measurement of income, limit disclosure. Uncertainty avoidance decreased.Transparency increased. Table 1. However, it is difficult to find out specific evidences on the effects of culture on the company s financial reporting within a large international firm due to some limitations. Firstly, the cultural data is not reliable in an accounting context (Nobes and Parker, 2012). For example, UK and Germany use different legal and accounting systems despite both of them are European countries. German companies are in operating under their own laws and policies. Secondly, compared with the measurement of direct relevant elements of the external environment of accounting such as legal systems or equity markets, the measurements of cultural influences within a company accounting system are vague and indirect (Nobes and parker, 2012). Culture measurement is complex, Hofstede s theory doesn t consider about the people which come from other countries and minority population that may have different cultural attributes

Voice Recorder, By Charlie Victor Charlie Victor Romeo, cockpit voice recorder, is a modern theatrical documentary derived entirely from the Black Box transcripts of six notable concrete airline emergencies. In this engaging and intensifying documentary, Charlie Victor Romeo positions the audience into perspective of being inside a tension filled cockpits of authentic flights in distress, which proposes an intriguing representation of the sensibility in a mid life crisis and a person s life at jeopardy. The six transcript samples of previous voice recordings came from various air flights and incidents such as flights American 1572, American Eagle 4184, Aeroperu 603, USAF Yukla 27, Japan Air 123, and United 232. The film primarily portrays a significant purpose of entertainment and political motives, but also highlights the issue with aviation safety and the usage of air tragedies to depict it along with the considerate lack of communication and organization established. Thus, to establish an epidemic, catastrophic disasters must occur to generate great awareness for the issue, so for a similar disaster to not transpire again. The play opens with a flight attendant demonstrating the airplane precautions, safety procedures and reminding passengers to fasten their seat belts and to turn off all cellular devices. Before each new airline scene played, the film displays the name of the flight, location of trying to land, and number of passengers and crew members that were on the flight. • 7. A New Approach to Art A NEW APPROACH I continue to get further away from the usual artists tools; easel, palette, brushes. I prefer sticks, trowels, knives and dripping fluid paint. My feeling is new needs need new techniques. It seems to me the modern painter cannot express this age the airplane, the atom bomb, the radio in the old forms of the Renaissance or any other past culture. Jackson Pollock (1950) It is apparent from the quote mentioned above that Art has undergone rapid transformation from the 20th century. Everything had been declared a fair game. Almost anything and everything was considered as art. 20th century art had played a pivotal role in defying conventions. Besides this art was no longer restricted to things that looked aesthetically appealing but was far beyond that. Artworks were no longer perceived as static objects with a singular meaning. Artists challenged the very old definition of art by adding or rather including a lot more to it. Art was no longer restricted to something that is visually appealing but also to something that addressed a variety of issues. They believed in using art as a platform in representing or addressing multiple socio political, cultural and community based issues. Also, their work expanded far beyond the institutional confines of the gallery or museum space. Artists have now produced a variety of works whose meaning cannot be understood otherwise because their context is very crucial to the piece of art. Many times the collection ... Wearing my Wellesley College worn out, navy blue hoodie, black Nike s, and black yoga pants, I was dressed for a comfort. I remember that after my modern world history class, I did not feel the inspiration to go to the library and study, so I met up with a few friends at the lockers next to the student center to eat junk food, do homework, and listen to music. My purple, patterned backpack landed on the on the rough carpet with a thud, and since I was not in the most social mood, I took out my laptop and started jamming out to music. The first thing I noticed when I entered into the now cloudy light outside was how cold it was; too cold to be May. I was brought out my thoughts by soft sobs and remembered the task at hand: getting Sally back to her dorm. The first challenge was getting past the frisbee team practicing on the quad, so grabbing Sally by the hand, I pulled her over to the back of Straus and sat behind a tree in the damp grass in excruciating silence. I finally asked, Hey, Sal? Could you tell me what s going on? She screamed, which in the wide open quad inducing some of the frisbee players to glance over, curious as to what was going on. I immediately grabbed Sally s hand and made her take deep breaths. She leaned back on the tree and sighed, calming down a bit. Eventually we walked down the long path past the flagpole and the chapel, through the Hallowell passage, and to Sally s dorm. She opened the door of her dorm, and we walked down the long hallway to her room. I made Sally sit down on her bed and take three deep breaths while I got a glass of water. His childhood was not very fortunate, however, he did indulge himself in one particular way: Jimi loved to play the guitar. Jimi could never afford to take lessons so he taught himself. At first he played an old acoustic guitar, and later a cheap Silvertone electric. Both of these guitarswere both strung for a lefty on a right handed guitar, one of the defining Hendrixtraits. Of the single ?Hey Joe,? which was the first song recorded for Are You Experienced?, Hendrix said: ?It?s a commercial record,. but everyone found that better for the first time. It?s just a phase, it?s only a very small part of us.? Another Hendrix tune from Are You Experienced? was ?Purple Haze.? Many people have the conception that the song Purple Haze is about drugs. In the dream, Jimi was walking under the sea, surrounded by purple haze. He became lost and Jesus saved him . The song was originally called ?Purple Haze Jesus saves.? Purple Haze was described as ?the band?s break through single in America? This song was the one that had really sparked Hendrix s album sales. Lancastrian Exceptionalism In Shakespeare s Second Neutralogy Lancastrian Exceptionalism: Crisis and the Crown in Shakespeare s Second Tetralogy Sovereign, argues Carl Schmitt, is he who decides on the exception (5). Far from the only definition of sovereignty available to us, this narrow understanding, he continues, is a borderline case and not...routine. Indeed, the exception is to be understood to refer to a general concept in the theory of the state, and not merely to a construct applied to any emergency decree or state of siege. Thus, because [t]he exception...is not codified in the existing legal order, it must necessarily be characterized as a case of extreme peril, a danger to the existence of the state (6). Conversely, in non crisis situations, Schmitt implies, we should expect the law rather than the will of the head of state to clearly delineate... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This way, the head of state does not normally have sovereign power to dictate his will over his own laws, precisely because the lack of emergency prevents him from acting autocratically. If we apply Schmitt s theory to late mediaeval English history, we see that he is largely correct, at least insofar as the royal succession is concerned. Consider the century of stable succession in England from Edward I s accession in 1274 to Richard II s in 1377, for example. With each king s demise, there was no question as to who would inherit the crown. Even in the case of Edward II s violent deposal and murder not simply a single, tumultuous event but rather a gradual erosion of the king s authority in the years before his overthrow Schmitt s theory holds true. As there was no immediate crisis of authority, there was no opportunity for a sovereign to step forward and seize upon the exception, and the young Edward III came to the throne almost automatically, as expected and indeed as the law dictated. In contrast, the Lancastrian kings who followed Richard II Henry IV, and his son Henry ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 16. The Colonialization Of Italy And The Colonization Of Libya Italy, like most countries, conquered other countries for the purpose of benefitting their economic and political needs. According to Martin Moore, What in effect is taking place is a State financed and officially organised mass migration of Europeans, from an over crowded temperate Europe, to a barren non European country overseas (Moore 1). However, Italywas the last country to explore and conquer the land in Africa, which limited the amount of land available to them. This was shown in the colonization of Libya. Libya was not a country that was ideal to colonize because of their stationary civilization and monotheistic religion. Regardless, Italy was determined to conquer this land for the benefit of the natives and Italy itself. Carlo Schanzer writes, In short, Italy wishes to govern her African colonies by introducing her surplus man power among backward populations and integrating the two, never by unnecessarily substituting the former for the latter (Schanzer 448). Italy intended to do this through focusing on giving justice, order, hygiene, communications, and education to Libya. In order to further their goal, Italy wanted to focus on the sanitation issue facing Libya. According to the Italian Colonial Policy in North Africa, it states, Italy colonizes not only with her sword, however, but also with the aid of her doctors and her teachers (Schanzer 449). Statesman, Francesco Crispi, built many Italian schools and hospitals on the Mediterranean coast, which ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Salivary amylase catalyses the breakdown of complex sugar, such as starch, into a simple sugar, such as glucose. In this experiment, the optimum temperature for salivary amylase to function is 37ЛљC. Above the optimum temperature, the kinetic energy in the substrate and enzymeincreases. The number of collisions between substrate and enzyme also increases, but the formation of enzyme substrate complex decreases. Beneath a greying evening sky, and between tall buildings of steel, are big flakes of swirling snow that drift and lightly cover every street lamp, branch, shoulder and patch of pavement untouched by moving feet. Patrick Sole, a man without a home, is slumped, in wet, grey slush, against a brick wall. He does not twitch, he does not tremble. And if white begins to blanket his tattered coat, and if his frostnipped fingers begin to numb; well, he does not stir. For how long he has sat there, he does not know, for he looks and feels as white as a ghost. With an icy puff of breath, Patrick blinks slowly and blankly observes the blur of faces before him. As the evening sky blackens, the bustle of the street grows noisier and is lit vividly by street lamps, lights, cars and electronic billboards. I then tried putting the rhythm in my hands only, and backing my focus up to encompass the entire ensemble. The concept of polyrhythm as intertwined parts creating a complex whole finally clicked. My perception of the astsiagbekor suddenly shifted from individual parts surrounded by unrelated noise to an incredibly complex whole that needs every part to be complete. I find this system the most functional because it is a visual representation of pitch, rhythm, intervals, relativity, and how multiple parts line up. Indonesian gamelan uses a cipher notation. Each gamelan ensemble has its own unique tuning, so the pitched sounds of each instrument are assigned corresponding numbers. Cipher notation indicates pitch with numbers and rhythm with their spacing. I thought that this would be difficult to get used to. In reality, it was actually simple and easy to understand. To achieve this, multiple access protocols coordinate the transmission. There are three classes of multiple access protocols, random access, taking turns and channel partitioning. With random access protocol, each node tries to randomly to access the complete broadcast link, without any regard to the other nodes. Taking turns protocol utilizes some type of turning mechanism, which designates which node is allowed to transmit. There are numerous of taking turn protocols, two are polling protocol and token passing protocol. The polling protocol requires one of the node to be designated as a master node. The master polls each of the nodes in a round robin fashion. The master first sends a message to node 1, saying that it can transmit. After node 1 transmits, the master sends a message to node 2 it can transmit The master determines when a node has finished sending its frames by observing the lack of a signal on the channel. The procedure continues in this manner, with the master polling each of the nodes in a cyclic manner. (Kurose 459) An advantage of this type of protocol is it avoids collisions, since nodes are only allowed to transmit when they are given access to the channel. Disadvantage to polling, are delays, as transmitters have to wait for the poll and the centralization with the requirement for a master to conduct the polling, if it fails the entire channel becomes inoperative. Token passing protocol there is no master node, instead special purpose frame known as a token is exchanged among the nodes in some order. When a node receives a token, it holds onto the token only if it has some frames to transmit; otherwise, it immediately forwards the token to the next node. The First Retirement Plan Of The United States Essay The first retirement plan created in the United States, is one that the majority of us are familiar, the Social Security Act, signed under law in 1935. Up until 1939, Social Security only paid retirement benefits to primary workers, which for the most part were men. Age 65 was chosen as the retirement age because individuals who survived past childhood were likely to live past 65. However, not everyone benefited from such assistance, even after age 65 agricultural and domestic workers were excluded from coverage (DeWitt, 2010). The excluded group consisted of roughly half of workers contributing to the economy, which the majority were African Americans. According to Larry DeWitt, a public historian from the Social Security Administration, exclusion of such groups was due to tax collection procedures and not due to racial bias. Although it may seem as though Social Security was meant to be the only form of retirementplan for qualified retirees, it was not. During such time, many individuals strongly depended on their savings as well as on their family. Today, the certainty of receiving sufficient benefits solely from Social Security for a quality standard of living after retirement is indefinite. Baby boomers individuals born post World War II between 1946 and 1964 are beginning to claim their benefits, and given what I have learned in class, the number of individuals entering the workforce is inadequate to sustain such a large population, thus such generation will consume ... • 37. Mining Into Destruction Of The United States Mining into Destruction Amanda Poltorak Hopkinsville Community College Mining into Devastation Introduction Mining affects the lives of millions of Americans every day. Although the United States has a large amount of coal remaining to be mined and burned, almost three fourths of the public land in America has been declared off limits for mining. Mountaintop mining is a relatively new form of surface mining that has steadily gained popularity. The debate as to whether or not this process is an economic necessity or environmental disaster for Kentuckians is the question. Undoubtedly, it is an environmental disaster and it should be removed in every state that they are using it not to mention the health hazards. One report found states, Although dozens of new coal burning power plants are planned or under construction, the latest coal boom is meeting resistance from critics who want to shift the U.S. economy toward cleaner fuels. Even if electricity from coal is cheaper than other sources, they argue, the savings are far outweighed by its environmental and health impacts (Isabella, 2013). • 38. Unity of a Family Explored in The Grapes of Wrath Essay Unity of a Family Explored in The Grapes of Wrath One would say that on a literal level The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck is about the Joad family s journey to California during The Dust Bowl. However, it is also about the unity of a family and the concept of birth and death, both literal and abstract. Along with this, the idea of a family unit is explored through these births and deaths. As can be seen in The Grapes of Wrath, the Joads are a very tight knit family. Yet on their trip to California, they experience many losses and additions to their family. In general, Steinbeck s novel abides by the circle of life. When a birth occurs, a death follows, and when a death occurs, a birth follows. However, in The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Chapter Thirteen, Grampa does die, as he was never truly the same once he left his land. This is because the land goes back to Grampa s ancestry, and losing the land is like losing a family member. This is the Joad family s first run in with death on their journey, yet Ma Joadstill manages to keep the family together. Moreover, in Chapter Thirteen, as the Joad family continues on their journey, they meet the Wilson family. The two families decide to carry on with their trip together. It is at this point that Steinbeck follows the pattern of the circle of life. Steinbeck begins by writing about the rebirth of Tom Joad. Next, Grampa dies. Following this, there is a birth for the Joads when they add the Wilson family to their own. However, as previously stated, in order to represent the hardships of the journey, many more deaths than births occur in the novel. In Chapter Eighteen alone, Noah leaves the family, the Joads continue on without the Wilson family, and Granma dies. It may seem like these losses would tear the family apart, but Ma Joad understands the concept of family, and tries her hardest to keep the family as one unit. For example, Ma Joad sits up all night with Granma s dead body, jut so the family can cross the border. The fambly hadda get acrost (312). Population Growth in Perspective Essays Population Growth in Perspective Introduction To anyone even remotely acquainted with the situation, the ever expanding world population can easily be a cause of grave concern. Indeed, the simple realization that the total world population will most likely be doubling within the next century may seem to imply catastrophe. Considering the strain our current huge population puts on the world, is it not natural to presume that two times our number will spell disaster? Generally, people have operated under the assumption that the world was (or was on its way to being) overpopulated. I began my research in this topic with the same outlook. I initially wanted to research overpopulation because I was deeply concerned with its implications. I wanted to understand the causes of population growth and to learn what might be done to ameliorate the problem. Soon into the research, however, I happened upon pieces of literature opposing the idea of an overpopulation crisis and immediately respected certain aspects of their arguments. Quickly, I was forced to change the scope of my question from what will be the consequences of overpopulation? to what exactly does overpopulation mean? and does an overpopulation problem even exist? . History of Population Crises The seed of my doubt that an overpopulation crisis was imminent was planted when I began to examine the historical record of population concerns. As a history major, I have at least some respect for patterns in history. While I recognize that new things can emerge, often a current event is a variant on an earlier expressed theme. Regarding population, the first documented concerns over population size date from a Babylonian epic from 1600 BC (Cohen, 1995). The United States Congress passed the Foraker Act, which established a civil government in Puerto Rico. This act authorized the President of the U.S. to appoint a governor and part of the Puerto Rican island legislature. The U.S. established Cuban as a protectorate. The Treaty of Paris granted Cuba its independence, but the U.S. Army didn t want to withdraw from the island until the year 1902. The Platt Amendment restricted the rights of newly independent Cubans and effectively brought the island with the U.S. sphere. This amendment prevented Cuba from signing a treaty with another nation without American approval. It also allowed the U.S. the right to intervene to preserve order in Cuba. Cuba eventually agreed with the Platt Amendment and added it to it s constitution. This treaty made Cuba a protectorate of the U.S. and governed their relationship for many years. Point 1: The Greek city states were largely male dominated. According to Darlington, men could only vote, boys could only go to school, girls were married to men twice their age and a woman s only job was to bear children (especially boys). All the Greek city states felt men were more important. In Sparta, women could own land, women actually ended up owning more land than men, but they still couldn t vote. It was found that generally lower concentrations were better for germination then higher concentrations. Despite this, the hypothesis was not completely supported as in wheat and silver beet the second concentration had a higher rate of germination than the control and in all instances the highest concentration had a higher germination rate than the second highest concentration. Introduction Salinity refers to salt dissolved in a substance such as water or soil. Different plants have differing levels of salt tolerance, due to certain adoptions to specific ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Because less water is taken up, more water remains, and when the water evaporates from the soil, salt which has been low below ground for millions of years is brought to the surface, surrounding these new plants and depriving them of further water (DENR SA, 2010). This process can be made worse by the irrigation of crops, which result in more water soaking into the soil and thus more water to evaporate and carry salt to the soil s surface (DENR SA, 2010). An example of a plant adapted to high salinity environments is the mangrove. The mangrove is a halophilous plant, meaning that it is a plant that grows in saline soils and waters (Conservancy Association, 2010). This gives it an advantage as not many plants can live in these conditions. The mangrove handles these high salinity conditions in a number of methods. The first method is through salt exclusion, which is the process the mangrove uses to prevent salt from entering its roots and therefore stopping it being transported to the plant cells (Conservancy Association, 2010). Despite this, some salt still gets through to the cells, and there are more methods to deal with it. With mangroves such as the Black Mangrove, salt can be excreted through its tissues, through specific salt glands (Conservancy Association, 2010). Another method is the storage of this salt on the leaves of the plant, in the form of crystals. These leaves then drop to the ground, taking this salt with them (Conservancy ...
