2. Who Is Mary Barton s Drug Addiction During The Victorian...
Mary Barton is the first novel written by author Elizabeth Gaskell, which was published in 1848.
The novel explores the struggles of the working class in Manchester, England during the Victorian
Era industrial revolution. Gaskell portrays a story that dives into socioeconomic inequality
between aristocratic business owners and employees, while balancing a sub plot love story
between its characters. Mary Barton is full of modern day liberal overtones and fuels an argument
for redistribution of wealth, as this is not a discussion of politics it s important to highlight the
ideological resemblance between Gaskell and modern theorists. This paper will revolve around the
response to three questions about the novel; why did Gaskell write this book, drug addiction during
Victorian times, and the impact of Mrs. Barton s death on John s political views.... Show more

The author paints a clear picture of the daily struggles facing working class individuals through
poverty, death, drug abuse, prostitution, and violent crime. In the story the Barton and Wilson
families are intertwined in tragic deaths of loved ones and severe poverty that fuels anger
towards wealthy families like the Carson s. I find it difficult to measure the effectiveness of
Gaskell s novel based on what I felt was her intent in writing the story. The theme of those who
want what those who have still lives today and is debated in political arenas and throughout
academia. I can hypothesize that Gaskell succeeded by publishing a story in 1848 that still
maintains relevancy

4. Psychology Personal Statement Essay
Of all the A Levels I study, psychology is definitely the most relevant to day to day life; it raises
questions related to various aspects of our lives and demonstrates how open minded we must be
in order to gain higher levels of understanding in terms of behaviours and mental conditions.
Having looked into various career options I have decided I would most enjoy a career in the avenue
of psychology. At the moment I am leaning towards clinical psychologyhowever, I also have
interest in counselling psychologies and music therapy. These career options I believe utilise my
skills in listening to others and rationalising their views. I further developed these skills in high

At the moment I am reading a book called The Man Who Couldn t Stop by David Adam, it s
about how OCD affects a person s life and explains how though we all have ego syntonic
thoughts from time to time, constantly living with ego dystonic thoughts and using rituals to
temporarily remove them is so much harder as it affects even a task considered normal . I have
also watched various documentaries like Extreme OCD Camp , How Crazy am I? and Thin , as
well as having read fictional psychological books, through these I have been able to evaluate how
people with mental illnesses become stigmatised due to the label of their illness, however,
without that label people can often seem normal . Particularly through the documentaries I have
seen how difficult overcoming a mental illness is especially without a high level of motivation. I
greatly see the value of not only helping people overcome related issues but allowing them to feel

6. Cadbury Takeover
Case Study: Cadbury Takeover
Introduction:
In the beginning of 2010 the US food giant took over one of the most famous British confectionary
companies, Cadbury, affectively making Kraft the largest food confectionary company in the world
(Smith, 2010). According to Rigby and Masters (2010) the takeover was one of the biggest and most
hotly contested acquisitions in the UK . The process was exhaustively followed by media, which
criticized inability of British Government to limit takeovers of such famed British brands in the
future as it is part of the British identity. Moreover, during such process a large number of
employees have suffered, not only through a large number of redundancies, but also through the

According to Lawrence Hrebiniak: Kraft ... has scared off Cadbury employees by trying to make
their decentralized culture fit the US company s highly structured approach (Lucas and Rappeport,
2011). For Cadbury s employees this meant increased uncertainty about their future employment
overall, as well as structure of the internal relationships and management style, especially as a
result of a closure of a number of factories as well as mass redundancies (Stiff and Ralph, 2011).
Employees on the lower level of the hierarchy had to get used to new structure of the company,
which meant that many of them have to report to different managers than previously. On top of
that, due to the merger, employees of two different companies now have to work side by side,
and considering that employees of Kraft feel they should be dominant (Lucas, 2011), it can reflect
negatively on the relationship between employees not only vertically on the hierarchy, but also
horizontally. Of course, relationships are not changing only for Cadbury s employees, Kraft
workers are also directly affected (Lucas, 2011), as takeover involved changes for them also
including closure of Kraft factories and redundancies of Kraft s employees (Stiff and Ralph, 2011).
The takeover had also impact on the employees higher up on the hierarchy. As mentioned by one of

9. How Hamlet s First Soliloquy Effects The Audience
How Hamlet s First Soliloquy Effects the Audience Hamlet s first soliloquy in Act 1, Scene 2 is an
incredibly passionate and shocking passage. The passage is contrasting the artificial actions and
dialogues that Hamlet illustrates to his uncle Claudius through the entire play. The soliloquy reveals
Hamlets melancholia and the reason for his anger, hatred, pain, and grief by explaining how
miserable his life seems. He misses his father deeply; he is disgusted by his mother and uncle s
marriage, and feels horrible about his whole situation wishing he was dead. Shakespeare is using
different types of literal in Hamlet s soliloquyto connect with the audience by revealing indirect
information like juxtaposition, metaphor, and imagery. Hamlet... Show more content on

Hamlet may be portraying his mother as a sort of Virgin Mary who was sexually untouched and
un violated like an un breached garden prior to her fall. This would make Claudius into a Satan
like figure that breaches the garden with his bed stewed in corruption (III.iv.93) and she loses
her purity and grows to seed. Much of the imagery is dark, rank , and gross (I.ii.140) which helps
create the sad mood that Hamlet is in. He uses an awful lot of juxtaposition, similes, and
metaphors to make it obviously clear the point he is trying to get across. Shakespeare seems to
use these comparisons in a fashion to make the difference between the two objects as blatant as
possible, as evidenced by the Hyperion/satyr comparison. Allusions are also used heavily
throughout in order to give his ideas more backing and support, especially referring to past
mythology with Hyperion, Hercules, and the

This journal is of particular interest. Shaun and Ludovicus s descriptions of The Eye were
actually quite close to the actual thing. The Eye was a secret programmed ship deep underground
to free clever prisoners. It s origins are unclear, but is believed to have been constructed in the early

Doing so he will be helping the people of New Jersey by lowering property taxes, which
individuals can finally be relieved to hear. Murphy also wants to be more strict with spending on
transit to ensure that the roads and bridges are functional rather than crowded with tolls.
Personally, I think this is very efficient because these two factors make New Jersey very
expensive to live in and by lowering taxes and being more strict with transit the economy can
steadily progress to a stable point. Murphy wants to grow the economy due to the state being
ranked last or near last in growth and inequalities. He states, We need an economy that works for
all New Jerseyans not just the special interests, I flat out reject the us versus them approach to
our economy, it is time we get back to thinking about we (Phil Murphy). Murphy wants to achieve
this by raising the wage to $15 an hour, ensure equal pay for equal work, and make millionaires
and corporations pay their fair share of taxes. If this is successful then the economic standing that
New Jersey holds will soon exponentially rise to the top. At the same time, Murphy wants to fix the
economy so that more is invested in schools, family care and the elimination of poverty. Along with

is a big deal. Most will say it s our constitutional right. Voting is knowing that the person or people

17. Creatine Literature Review
Literature Review: Creatine Supplementation
Introduction
Creatine is a natural substance that occurs in the body, it is also a supplement that has been tested
by numerus athletes over the years to see whether it has a positive effect on performance. However,
there is anecdotal evidence that suggests creatine supplementation may be the cause of negative
side effects such as dehydration, the increase of muscle cramping and an increase in blood pressure.
One way the supplementation of creatine can improve performance is by aiding the resynthesise
ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate
) stores within the body in order to produce energy at a quicker rate
therefore the most common athletes to take creatine are high intensity power athletes who are
repeated actions multiple times. Such as those doing long distance events such as cycling,
swimming and running, it may also be used as a way of recovery for sprinters. A study carried out
by Kreider R.B et al. (1998) concluded that there were increases in the performance of isotonic
lifting and sprinting during agility after taking creatine supplements. Although creatine has been
believed to help recovery, research undertaken by Stroud et al. (1994), would suggest that there was
no difference in the recovery periods. This review of literature will examine as to whether creatine
should be recommended to athletes based on current research.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), formerly known as electroshock therapy, is a treatment for
mental illnesses that runs small electric currents through the brain, with the intention of bringing
on a brief seizure. The goal is to change brain chemistry to reverse symptoms of certain mental
illnesses. During the 1940s 50s, ECT was the most effective way of treating certain mental
illnesses and was used frequently throughout many countries (Kendell, 1982). One of the main
illnesses ECT is used for is depression, but it is also used for other mental illnesses, such as mania
and some cases of schizophrenia. Patients undergo ECT about three times a week, totaling six to
twelve sessions. This is an important topic to research because ECT is known to... Show more

Although ECT is shown to be effective, it does not always mean that is a safe form of treatment. If
ECT causes patients to have severe brain damage and cognitive deficits, it would be considered
unethical to use, regardless if it an effective form of treatment for certain mental illnesses
(Reisner, 2003). There are limitations to ECT that doctors need to be aware of, such as patients
having existing medical conditions that could counteract with ECT treatment and cause damage to
the patient. Informed consent is an important process in undergoing ECT, it should let the patient
know all of the risks and all of the benefits of ECT. Many have suggested that although the risk of
brain damage is reported to be low, it is still an important deciding factor for a patient who is
eligible for undergoing ECT. Informed consent should include risks, benefits, acknowledge post
treatment risks and confusion, the possibility or uncertain effects of the treatment, as well as
alternative options (Reisner, 2003). Because a risk of a treatment is not always certain, it should
still be required to inform a patient of the possible effects of the treatment they are undergoing, due
to the minimal possibility that brain damage or death could still

AP Literature and Composition

Hamlet s Stagnant Revenge
A bloody deed almost as bad, good mother/ As kill a king and marry with his brother , a statement
so bold you would assume it was from a bold man, but the reality couldn t be further from that
assumption. In the play Hamlet, the former king s son Hamlet attempts to take revenge upon the
new king, Claudius. As the readers, though we see how Hamlet is indirect in his action and delays
his revenge multiple times. Hamlet is a man of inaction. Hamlet waits to kill his Uncle, Claudius,
because he is uncertain of the truth, he is afraid of the afterlife, and he is working to exact the
perfect revenge.
Hamlet always wants more information before he takes revenge. Hints of his true motivation first

A Utopia turned wrong would cause suspicion, discomfort, curiosity, anger, malevolent behavior
and all loss for true love. Riots would occur turning civilized people to become savages and
barbarians. Half of this is true for the country of Oceania. A Utopia that is not so perfect is
depicted in George Orwell s famous novel, 1984. Some citizens are turned against the government
and its officials when they discover the falsehoods and corrupt ideas of their Utopian government.

23. Compare And Contrast Judaism And Monotheism
Pharisees: spiritual grandparents of rabbinic Judaism. They believed that God controlled all things,
yet decisions made by individuals also contributed to the course of a person s life. Also, they
believed in the resurrection and the award/punishment in the afterlife notion.
Reform Judaism: the more liberal, progressive, modern thinking sect of Jews. The reformers began
by reforming the prayer service to bring it into line with Western sensibilities. They also began to
reexamine the underpinnings of Judaism, the meaning of the Torah, reward and punishment of the
afterlife, the meaning end of time, and the role of Jews in the integrated world. Reform Judaism
wants to more tolerant of non Jewish religions as well.
Monotheism: this means the belief that there is only one God. Monotheism is present within all
three Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam). Monotheism should be a source of
unity for all three of the Abrahamic religions. It should provide an opportunity to unite among all

Mumbai Dabbawalla: A Model of Service Excellence A Strategic Analysis
Introduction:
If we look at the history of India over the last century, we get many examples of historic
companies such as the Godrej Group, TATA Steel, ITC and many more that have bravely faced the
emerging market situation of India, the recessions and have successively managed to sustain
themselves till date. But rarely do we find examples of organizations started by a group of illiterate
men from the rural hinterlands of Pune and Mumbai to establish a successful cooperative model that
has sustained itself through decades, today popularly known as the Mumbai Dabbawallas. They
predominantly work on end to end delivery of homemade food from their residence to their offices.

Acute visibility
The beauty of the dabbawalla based system is that all of the dabbawallas understand exactly what
is happening and when to the minute. If certain deadlines and hand offs are missed, people don t
eat. It s as simple as that. hence they make sure everyone within their chain understands their roles
and responsibility, where they need to be at a particular time and what needs to be done if they run
behind schedule.
Organizational culture and shared values
Typically, the age range of dabbawalla ranges from 18 65 and they remain in their groups for the
entire working lives and hence through this a strong sense of bonding is developed among the
dabbawallas. The new members recruited are typically friends or relatives of existing dabbawallas

I, a Personal Project Fashion is historically known as a form of expression, and with style, one
can portray their self identity. Growing up I was clinically labeled as obese for my age,
fluctuating between gaining and losing weight almost to this day. Since I value fashion and
style immensely not being able to be comfortable with my body, and in hand with myself, had a
negative impact on my daily life. Also, the negative attitude that came with being overweight in
society and not fitting into the criteria of the ideal body didn t help on my self value and self
esteem. An impact so significant that I changed the direction of my future career in working in
the fashion industry because I thought that my appearance wouldn t have worked in my favor
in the fashion and couture world of size zero models. Although my parents taught me to be
relentless when it came to my dreams and to never undervalue myself, their lessons and words
of wisdom weren t going to change how I perceived the world to think. Had I gone through that
phase of my life nowadays, it would ve carried on a different course. With all the pro self love
and embracing your curves movement that s been on social media now, there is a positive
attitude of one and their body, in any shape and form. I couldn t be happier with the current trends

Many of these challenges stemmed from Prabhupada s death in 1977, which left a young ISKCON
shaken . Although the movement was growing rapidly, it still relied heavily on the charismatic
authority of Prabhupada, and his death created deep uncertainties within the organization s
leadership. As the organization scrambled to fill the void in institutional power left by its founder,
there was a significant movement of Indians into local positions of power, which had a [stabilizing

participation . As Indian Americans continued to take on leadership roles in ISKCON, they began

Before this period, Prabhupada distanced himself from traditional Hinduism and publicly stated that
his movement was not Hindu: I don t want a Hindu temple. Our constitution is different. We want
everyone . However, the movement was forced to abandon this conviction as anti cult sentiment
grew in the 1970s. By the middle of the decade, ISKCON fell under intense scrutiny by the media
and government officials. In order to protect the movement against accusations of being a
dangerous cult, the leadership asked ISKCON s Indian supporters to speak to the movement s
authenticity as a traditional Hindu religious group . This testimony was successful in alleviating
public fears and allowed ISKCON to escape government sanctions. Without the leadership and
support of Indian immigrants, ISKCON would have been far less prepared to survive the death of
its founder in 1977 and the subsequent financial and legal issues that plagued the movement in the
1980s.
III.Hippies and Immigrants: Comparative Perspectives
Two major groups have historically populated the membership of ISKCON: first, the rebellious
youth of the American counterculture, and second, the Indian immigrant community that exploded
in the wake of 1960s immigration reform. While Indian American devotees currently represent a
large proportion of ISKCON s following, their circumstances appear to differ dramatically from
those of the counterculture s hippies.

27. The Pros And Cons Of Freedom Of Speech
Freedom of speech has central place in democratic societies. In the United States the First
Amendment protects free speech as essential right of its citizens. Other democracies, such as
those in western Europe also have free speech traditions, though none as extensive as the United
States . But why should speech be free? Speech should be free because it provides for a good
government, promotes the realization of truth, allows diversity to thrive, and is a
straightforward legislative approach to speech. Free speech allows the people to hold their
government accountable via the free press. A condition of a good government is freedom of
information, and what has been called the right to know (Garton Ash 78), which is the
responsibility of a free press to provide to the people, especially when the government is not
being transparent on its own. Without a press that is free to report on public officials and the
government s activity, both are able to go unchecked, at the expense of the people they are
supposed to serve. In addition to this, freedom to expose public figures activities must be protected
from frivolous accusations of libel because the ability to have a journalist accused of libel for
revealing the truth would [threaten] the informing purpose of the First Amendment (Lewis 51). The
United Statesembraced this idea when the Supreme Court case New York Times v. Sullivan
(1964) decision the court changed the standards that constitute libel to the statement must be
false, as well as published both knowingly and recklessly. This shifted the burden of proof from
the accused to the accuser. Not only does the press need to be free to report on the activity of the
government, but the people must be free to express their wants and needs to their government.
A fair and legitimate democracy requires that all people have a vote as well as an opportunity to
have their views heard. Garton Ash uses the words of Ronald Dworkin to explain this, a
majority decision is not fair unless everyone has had the opportunity to express his or her
attitudes or opinions or fears or tastes or presuppositions or prejudices or ideals (Garton Ash 77).
Free speech allows for political views to be expressed, so that the desires

In my opinion courtship rituals have drastically changed over time but have also still held onto
some aspects of romance, dating, and traditions that couples set early on. Courtship rituals are the
traditions during a certain period of time where two people get to know each other before striving to
marry their significant other. Courtshiprituals can vary depending on the culture and the people
using it. Many have mixed opinions on the topic. Nowadays, relationships can be tricky and are
nothing like the movies. Datingpractices differ now from the late 1900 s and early 2000 s. For this
essay I have decided to interview my younger cousin, who is fourteen years old. Through the
interview process she gave me the insight of younger teens and preteens dating. Communication,
social presence, and technology have changed the ways relationships are viewed and acted upon.
Dating had almost completely replaced the old system of calling by the mid 1920s and, in so doing,

of an interest since fans would be able to see a player s genuine reaction than just of a reaction

weakness by using each social media tool to its individual strength. While Facebook can stay
informative since it executes all strategies with only one tool. Their Instagram can be used better by
continuing the I am LA campaign, then adding an Uninterrupted like segment. On Twitter, instead

It is crucial that Christians not only put trust in God and the Son but that Christians also entrust
themselves in the Holy Spirit, considering he is fully divine and personal. The Spirit of God,
who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead,
he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you. (Romans 8:11) Paul is
declaring that through the spirit Godwill give believers new life, in which humans are transformed
into the likeness of Christ Making the debate over foreknowledge is one of the liveliest debates
within evangelicalism today. (Boyd, Eddy 49) According to The Pocket Dictionary of
Theological Terms Foreknowledge is defined as To know in advance . Regarding
foreknowledge, Arminian and Calvinists disagree on how God acquires his knowledge.
Calvinists believe that God foreknows all that shall come to pass because he predestined it.
Others, called Arminians, believe God foreknows all things simply because they shall come to
pass, though humans to some extent determine it by their free will. (Boyd, Eddy 48) All
orthodox Christians believe it is true that God is omniscient. The question is if God knows
every detail of the future or only enough where people are still free in their decisions. It could be
that God has some details of the future, but one decides definite details by their own free will.

in school. Without a doubt it is one of the things that teenage girls face in today s world, but what
if there is a way to prevent from girls getting pregnant? The answer to this is the availability of birth
controlpills to teenage girls. There is no way of knowing what teenagers are up to and that
includes having sexual relations at a young age, but people would feel safe knowing that there is
protection for them. Therefore, birth control pills should be available for teenage girls because it
prevents pregnancy, helps lower the risk of getting ovarian cancer, and reduces the rates of abortion.

Akhenaten quickly declines into his new theological ambition. In a new empathy for the god of
light and life, Aten Akhenaten is consumed by his reverence for this new icon. Akhenaten readies
his people for a new development by driving Egyptians to disregard all gods except for Aten.
Akhenaten has his subjects and ruing class members undergo a revision that will suit Akhenaten s
new status quo for Egypt under Aten. Egypt is now left to face the abandonment of an estimated
two thousand deities worshipped in the ancient Egyptian culture. Almost overnight Akhenaten
transforms Egypt into a monotheistic culture and he promotes himself as the ultimate and sole
mediator for Aten. This new status puts Akhenaten higher in his class of power than before, he is
now both pharaoh and messenger for the supreme god. Akhenaten utilizes all resources to uplift his
drastic reforms. He implements his propaganda through writing, geography, architecture, and art.
Akhenaten is suspected of giving Egypt The Great Hymn to the Aten describing the Amarna Period

hymns. The great list finds lends itself to descriptions of Amarna Period art, temples, music,

45. God s Sovereignty Of Eternal Life
There are many great points that Moyer brings out as to how we should evangelize. He is clear
on many aspects of the Gospel, such as using 1 Corinthians 15 to explain what the Gospel is. He
also deals with sin, saving faith, assurance, good works, evangelism in the New Testament, the
best way to evangelize, prayer, boldness in evangelism and our duty as believers to evangelize. For
the most part it is great stuff.
There were some thoughts that were not so positive when I finished reading the book. In an
overarching way, Moyer gives a sense that man accepts a gift in trusting Christ rather than God
choosing man to receive the gift of eternal life by trusting Christ. It may seem like splitting hairs to
some, but what is called into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The good news is that God made a way for man to come back into a right relationship with Him
through the atoning death, burial and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ. How we can come into
a right relationship with Christ is by realizing our condition of sin and recognizing that without
Christ we will spend eternity in hell apart from God. Oversimplification doesn t make the Gospel
clearer instead it gives a muddy picture of who Christ is and what He did. The Gospel is not that
God is here for you take Him. The Gospel is we are here for God serve Him. The only way we can
serve Him is if we are in right relationship with Him.
Moyer s book stresses emphatically that repentance in salvation is only a changing of the mind
and not a change of the will or actions. When used in a soteriological context, repentance means to
change your mind about whatever is keeping you from trusting Christ and trust Him alone to save
you. [2] Moyer also feels that repentance is not necessary for the sharing of the Gospel to an

for not using the word repentance in evangelistic presentations. [3]

From the 1960 s through the 1990 s, Madoff s success and business grew substantially, mainly
from a closed circle of known investors and friends through word of mouth. In the 1990 s Bernard

to Marius, the armies may have been loyal to a particular commander or general, but still fought
first and foremost for the Senate and People of Rome, as well as the preservation and expansion

have but heard or read, I have witnessed or performed. What they have learned from books, I
have acquired in the field; and whether deeds or words are of greater estimation, it is for you to

relation to politics and moved to capitalize on this realization. His movement through politics would

50. The Danger Of A Single Story By Chimamanda Adicie Essay
Single Stories are Problematic
In the world we live in now it has become easy to stereotype and create a single story about
certain people and situations, whether it s intentional or not. In 2009, a Nigerian novelist
named Chimamanda Adichie gave an amazing TED talk called The Danger of the Single Story
. A single story more or less means an incomplete or inaccurate viewpoint of a person or culture
based on a story created from a single experience. When one hears the same story over and over
again, we start believing only that story. Adichie claims that creating single stories is problematic
and rely on power, a single story I decided to present is how people believe police officers are
abusing their power, and I believe the media is at fault. For one to truly understand a story we
must listen to the root of the story. Her speech made me realize and view things differently. In
the The Danger of a Single Story , Chimamanda Adicie tells her own personal experiences of a
single story and how that can become challenging. She talks about when she started reading and
writing at a young age. She read British and American children s books. When she started
writing all her characters were white and blue eyed just like in the books. It wasn t until writers
Chinua Achebe and Camara Laye that she realized people like her, people of color, could exist in
literature. Adichie s says what the discovery of African writers did for me was this: It saved me

The style and way the joke is set up can closely be compared to many other categories of jokes.
But what sets ethnic jokes apart is how the system it creates makes a person think of an ethnic

very biased and racist. Furthermore, another way that this joke can be analyzed and viewed is

and audience of the joke were Jewish, the joke would then be comprehended in a different light.
The Jewish would take the joke from someone within their group and enjoy it because of a sense
of pride, connecting Jewish life to elevated expectancy they would be happy to be known for (Qtd.

ethnic jokes to have many different meanings; depending on the content, teller and audience of the

54. The Importance Of Innocence And Experience By William Blake
Innocence and Experience: How William Blake Challenged Society
(More background on Blake here and how he came up with innocence/experience) (https:/
/www.mtholyoke.edu/courses/rschwart/hist255/jkr/romanticism.html) Romanticism was a literary
movement that swept through virtually every country of Europe, the United States, and Latin
America that lasted from about 1750 to 1870. This period included philosophy, art, music, literature.
(https://www.bl.uk/romantics and victorians/articles/the romantics) Romantics believed that men
and women should not be guided by rules placed on them by society but led by warm emotions
that promoted a sense of freedom. William Blake was one of the poets that began the Romantic Age
who promoted self expression but was weighed down by the importance and standards of religion.
Literary work during Romanticism had a strong emphasis in implementing nature, emotion over
logic, imagination over reason, and no division between art and literature. These works placed
focus on human personality affected by political and social causes. These became dominant themes
in romantic poetry which made literature much more complex. In the late eighteenth and
nineteenth century, child labor in England was prominent after the Great Fire of London in 1666.
After this massive fire in London, chimneys had to be built slimmer due to new regulations to
keep the city safer. Chimney sweeping was done by poor boys at ages as young as four after they
were sold.

What would become the European Union developed out of a need to negate the war making
potential of European powers, namely Germany as well as to foster economic recovery in countries
whose economies were all but destroyed. It was thought that tying the main armaments making
resources, coal and steel, together in a supernational organisation responsible for its management
would serve both roles. It has been developing since 1951 and keeps evolving. What one sees as a
transformation from something similar to a customs union not too unlike Benelux, to a political
union and finally a monetary union, albeit an incomplete one. The fundamental bodies that
comprise what is now the European Unionare still for the most part based on the spirit of the
Treaties of Rome. The development of the EU as whole will be explored as well as the bodies that
comprise it. How those bodies have improved as well as any weaknesses that still characterise
them will be explained.
As mentioned above what would become the EU began as the European Coal and Steel Community
in 1952. With the signing of the Treaty of Paris, the framework was laid for a common
administration amongst European states. With coal and steel being two of the most crucial
commodities in the wars that tore the continent apart in the 20th Century, it seemed a logical place
to start. A supernational authority, known as the High Authority made decisions by which member
states would be bound, decisions which put interests

56. What Is The Theme Of Act Of Union By Seamus Heaney
Act of Union Through the years, Irish poetry had a leaning towards representing Ireland as a raped
woman. Seamus Heaney s Act of Union , from his 1975 book of poetry, North, uses the theme of
relationship, portraying Britain as a man towering over the weaker, feminine Ireland. The poem
uses strong sexual metaphors, which try to compare the colonization of Irelandto that of a rape. The
metaphors used through the poem describes what took place between England and Ireland as well
as a sexual act taking place between a man and a woman. The poem s title Act of Union shadows

The first line of the second stanza, And I am still imperially continues to cover the images of
rape and violence. The word male begins the new line giving it a stress that has connotations of

the next two lines, the speaker describes the pain of childbirth, where Britain does not need to bear

Britain takes advantage of a union between the two, leaving Ireland painfully abused and hurt.
