My special place is a campsite called Day Maker 23 located on a small island on Namaken Lake
in Voyageurs National Park. Voyageurs National Park is located in Orr Minnesota just south of
the Canadian border. It is also located on the Eastern edge of the Canadian Shield. An exposed
area of Precambrian stone. My island does not have a specific name, but it appears to be a break
off of Sweetnose island in the Blind Indian Narrows located at 48В°26 33.7 N 92В°46 33.0 W.
Day Maker 23 is unique in that its location causes a division in current going through the narrows
causing stronger currents towards the west side of the island. This was a phenomenon that we
often had to deal with as the current would push our boat against the only dock on the island
located on the western point. The only campsite on the island was also located on the western
point, but was significantly more elevated than its rocky shoreline. This elevation, coupled with
the island s location caused for a constant breeze to blow over the campsite (Appendix D). Day
Maker 23 had a very rocky shoreline characterized by many of the islands within Voyageurs
National Park. These rocks vary in size, with some rocks having large cracks with small caves
(Appendix C). The rocks around the shoreline were typically light grey in color with some
variations in texture and crystal size. (Appendix B) I do not remember the rocks being particularly

has been beaten, the bark is set outside to be bleached by the sun. Next, the strips are placed over
semicircular boards. Once they have been fastened to the boards, the women attach an embroidery
design to the tablet. They transfer the design from the tablet to the piece of bark by rubbing. After
this, the women then fill in the lines and patterns with pigments such as brown, red and black.

In May 1830, Congress passed the Indian Removal Act which forced Native American tribes to
move west. Some Indians left swiftly, while others were forced to to leave by the United States
Army. Some were even taken away in chains. Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United
States, strongly reinforced this act. In the Second State of the Union Address, Jackson advocated
his Indian Policy. There was controversy as to whether the removal of the Native Americans was
justified under the administration of President Andrew Jackson. In my personal opinion, as a Native
American, the removal of the tribes was not in any way justified.

Jackson felt the removal of the Cherokees from our land was justified because the government was
paying for everything. Money can not compensate for the blood that was shed by our ancestors.
When some Indian tribes did not leave the land, federal troops came to Georgia to remove the
tribes forcibly. Cherokees resisted leaving their land until the bitter finish. Cherokees were marched
by gunpoint which was known as the infamous Trail of Tears. Many died due to the horrid
conditions, including my great grandmother. Any sensible person would have considered the
consequences of these actions. Jackson tried to make the trade seem peaceful and reasonable, but
there is nothing sane about the Trail of Tears. The consequence of a speedy removal will be
important to the United States, and to the Indians themselves (91). If Jackson really cared about
our well being, like he claimed, why would he allow the horrific Trail of Tears to persist? This

The film Almost Famous and the novel Perks of Being a Wallflower both show how William,
Charlie, and their stories are very similar. These were the big similarities that I noticed the most.
The first thing that really showed some similarity between the two is their relationships with
