Perfectionism Among Athletes
The significance of including perfectionism in this proposed study is due to it being a precursor of
burnout as well as having an association with burnout (Buyukbayraktar Temiz, 2015; Hill, Hall,
Appleton Kozub, 2008; Taris et al., 2010). Previous studies have reported positive relationships
between perfectionism and burnout among athletes (e.g., Aghdasi, 2014; Appleton, Hall Hill, 2009;
Chen, Kee, Chen Tsai, 2008), coaches (Tashman, Tenenbaum, Eklund, 2010) students (Zhang, Gan
Cham, 2007), and educators (Buyukbayraktar Temiz, 2015; Flett, Hewitt Hallett, 1995; Stoeber
Rennert, 2008). However, for academicians within universities, this has yet to be appropriately
studied due to the majority of perfectionism literature tends

Shamanism in Korea
Shamanism is the oldest and most important religions in Korea. The music, singing and dance
constitute the most prominent components of their ritual (Kut), having a strong influence on
Korean folk music, and is a part of Korean national heritage as well. Interestingly, the scholar Hahn
Man Young, found that the word nongak (famer s band) in Korean, was originally synonymous
with kut, and both practices use similar instruments in their performances. According to the scholar
Jongsung Yang, the believers think their own mistakes trigger bed things happen, displease and
offend the god or the spirits. So they hire shamans (Mudang female shaman, or Paksu male shaman)
to communicate with deities or ghosts. This includes singing or dancing in order to entertain the
deities, as an invitation to possess the shamans, allowing them to answer people s questions, and
solve problems. It becomes a semi religionin contemporary Korea.
The shaman ritual music shows respect to deities or ghosts, by pleasing them in hope of help
people solve their problems; therefore the Shamanic ritual is usually dramatic and improvised. It
serves for the urban life, for the people who need help from the spirit world, thus its music,
singing, and dancing needs to be understood by civilians. Its mystical peculiarities also make
significant differences from other religions: they do not have religion doctrine; no religious
ancestor, but they do worship many deities, even from other religions (such as

Socrates Unexamined Life Is Not Worth Living
The Unexamined Life Is Not Worth Living When Socrates was being accused, he claimed that The
unexamined life is not worth living In the apology, Socrates did not use some special debating
skills to get sympathy. On the contrary, Socrates s apology is righteous and unflinching. He
believed what he said and what he thought are good for the Athenian citizens, youth, and the
country. He believed he must be the improver of the citizens and he was important to others. In the
apology, the bold statement The unexamined life is not worth living have two meanings. On the
one hand, Socrateswants to warn the citizens to examine and reflect upon their own life by virtue
and justice and get spirit growth. On the other hand, compared with his own life, Socrates is
more willing to examine himself and others and discourse about virtue and the form of the
world. Death can help him get away from the unexamined life. In Socrates s Allegory of Cave
and the divided line, Socrates thinks people cannot see the real form of objects and they cannot
rightly reflect the world and upon themselves . People are like prisoners living in a cave and can

Firstly, it is an admonishment for the Athenian citizens. Socrates hopes people can keep examining
upon lives and seek the wisdom and virtue. Secondly, Socrates believes death can help soul get
released from the body and better understand themselves. Death is better than an unexamined life.
He hopes the citizens can understand the importance of examining themselves. The unexamined
life is not worth living is like his last admonishment to the citizens. He believes he will be better
after death because he can get away from unexamined life and be closer with the truths. The theory
of Socrates is based on spirit growth and seeking the truths of the world. The statement the

The Pros And Cons Of Television Shows
If you have ever watched TV, you might notice many commonalities and trends between many of
the TV shows that are on air. The shows usually follow similar storylines of a protagonist
(usually male) who struggles with their own moral values, usually stirring up trouble for
themselves and those around them. Now you re probably asking yourself: Hm I wonder why so
many shows follow similar patterns? Well the answer to that question is because of YOU! It s
all your fault that TV can be so monotonous and repetitive. You are a part of a giant collective
that drives what TV shows are being shown, what TV shows are being cancelled, and even when
TV shows are being played. You are a part of the audience. The audience is what drives TV shows
to be the entertaining platforms that they are meant to be, but they are also the most crippling
aspect of the televisionitself.
If I wanted to pitch a TV show to a TV network, the script would be immediately thrown in the
trash. This is because I am nowhere to be found in the hierarchy of the television network. The
television hierarchy makes it almost impossible for lesser known writers and producers to release
their work on popular networks. Also, newer shows do not get as much of a fighting chance as
others because these new shows must compete with other popular TV shows for the best time slots,
therefore getting less viewers, increasing the chance the network pulls the plug on new shows.
When TV networks try to decide what shows to put on

Research Paper On The Handmaid s Tale By Margaret Atwood
THT Research Essay The best books are both engaging and realistic. To create realism, the author
must think of how people would act in a given situation, not just what s convenient for an
interesting plot. Margaret Atwood accomplishes that in A Handmaid s Tale when creating her post
war society. She strung together different historical events for an accurate portrayal of decisions
people in power would make. Forced childbearing, the feminist movement, and puritanism were
some of the actions that inspired Atwood. During the Nazi regime in Germany, Heinrich Himmler
came up with a strategie to create a master race called the Lebensborn program. He created
breeding facilities in which Aryan women were recruited to be impregnated by S.S. soldiers... Show

Numerous areas of American life needed to be reformed in order for women to be equal to man.
Many woman believed that a large issue in america was the sexualization and objectification of
women. The Miss World Contest was found guilty of this crime. In 1968 hundreds of feminists
showed up at the event to protest the contest that places imposible standards of beauty on
women, and expects them to be pure and innocent but not celibate (Napikoski). Another large
issue was violence and rape against woman. Women often feared going outside alone and talking
to male strangers out of fear. Because of this another movement called Take Back the Night was
formed. It serves as a means for women to unite and voice our desire to end the fear and
perceived responsibility women experience when it comes to sexual assault, harassment, and
other forms of violence ( Take ). Offred s mother participated in marches such as this one. When
Atwood created Gilead, she put a stop to these issues. Women are seen as sacred and
untouchable; contact between men and women stopped outside of business relationships.
Media that shows too much skin has been censored or destroyed. Past feminist battles are now
used as a brainwashing technique in the Red centers. Videos of marches are shown to display
how hard women once had to fight in order to be safe. The women are told they have still have
freedom despite the heavy restrictions placed on their life. In the days of anarchy there was
freedom to. Now you are being given freedom from (Atwood 24). Woman now have freedom from
the violence of men and they are protected. All they had to give up was their freedom to choose

Women in Sports 19th and 20th Century
Jen Pearlstein December 2, 2010 Kin 305Women in Sports 19th and 20th Century Women s
participation in sports has changed over the centuries. In ancient times, men dominated societies.
Women were viewed as the caretaker, a provider for life. Women who did participate were
criticized and were thought of as threatening. In 18th century America, women were considered
inferior to men because of the belief that women are the weaker sex. A woman s purpose in life
was to take care of the house, children, and husband. When they did want to participate in
recreational sport, they need to be able to negotiate with men and with other women because
societies did not make it easy for women to participate. For example, there was a... Show more

This led to the formation of organizations like the national committee on Women s Sports, to
provide rules and standards for athletic participation for women and girls. The AAU, Amateur
Athletic Union, which was under the control of men, took control over women s athletics. This
stirred up conflict amongst physical educators and other leaders like, Lou Henry Hoover,
Blanche Thrilling, and Agnes Wayman who opposed the AAU control and wanted women to
govern the organization not men. They were against it because only women could understand
the psychological, motivational, and physiological need for women. (Costa Guthrie, 91) Lou
Henry Hoover was the leader of the National Amateur Athletic Federation, which was an
organization that supported sport for everyone. She wanted to have a separate Women s
division because of the different ideal standards of women s sport; and so was formed the
women s division of the NAAF. This organization set standards for women s competition and
encouraged them to participate in both school and non school events. There still was a belief that
women were too frail physically and mentally to participate in intense competition like Olympics.
However, in 1932, Mildred Babe Didrikson disproved this belief by winning two Olympic gold
medals and one silver medal in track and field. She had also won every golf tournament she
competed in. Her great victories influenced the acceptance of

Essay about Exploring the Possibility of Merit Pay for...
President Obama s recommendations for the reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind Act of
2001 (NCLB) and his education plan include provisions to award merit pay to teachers in an
attempt to obtain and retain effective teachers as measured by student academic achievement.
These proposals are supported by budgeted funding for the 2011 fiscal year with additional funding
included in the optional, competitive 1.35 billion Race to the Top Fund. A number of different
merit paysystems exist. Some reward entire schools or districts when passing rates on standardized
tests are achieved, while others reward individual teachers for passing rates. Some rely on peer or

Students in economically disadvantaged schools are more likely to have teachers rated in the
bottom quartile for teacher effectiveness as measured by raising student achievement (Education
Equality Project, 2010).
Previous Attempts at Merit Pay Traditionally, efforts to obtain effective teachers have focused
primarily upon raising the entry bar via credential, licensure, or certification requirements.
However, research has consistently demonstrated that credentials, licensure, and advanced
degrees are of little value in predicting teacher effectiveness (Education Equality Project, 2010;
Green Forster, 2008). The use of merit pay to obtain, retain, and affect student achievement is a
lesser used, but not unknown, methodology. In the 1920s, 40 to 50 percent of all urban school
districts adopted a merit pay plan. Interest waned and then resurfaced in the 1950s and, by 1960;
one in ten public schools adopted a form of merit pay. Interest declined in the 1970s and rose again
in the 1980s, and in 2010. Prior to the 1980s, research was primarily focused upon the difficulty
experienced in defining and measuring quality teaching (Cohen and Murnane, 1985). Due to the
inability to find reliable and valid definitions and measures of teacher quality, staff dissatisfaction
and dissension was experienced when using merit pay plans (Murnane Cohen, 1986). In addition,

Should Public Figures Be Accountable for Their Private...
The world is in a state of flux, changing drastically over the last few decades. The great
milestones of technology has led us into the new Technological Age of the 21st century, whereby
innovations such as the Internet allows information to be spread in seconds. Today, public
п¬Ѓgures such as celebrities and politicians play an increasing role in our society, shaping our
views and mindsets of the world. Thus, it is especially important that they are held accountable for
their actions, even those undertaken in private. Although it is often argued that we can overlook

Thus, as public п¬Ѓgures play a role as representatives of the society, they should be accountable
for their actions, even those undertaken in private, as it is only fair to the public, whom they
represent. Even though it is often argued that there is no need for public п¬Ѓgures to account for
their private activities as long as they perform in their jobs, what they do in private inevitably
matters as it would not only create a lasting impact on the society, but also when it breaks the law.
Performance at work does not exempt anyone from obeying the laws of the land, and public
п¬Ѓgures still have to account for their actions without shrinking from the responsibility. This is
especially true with the high corruption cases involving national leaders such as former Thai Prime
Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and TaiwanКјs former President Chan Shui Bian prove. Despite their
positions as high profile public figures, their actions in private still calls for state punishment,
forcing them to account for such undesirable actions. To ensure that the public upkeeps the
confidence towards the court, believing in its impartiality and justice, public figures have to
account for their private actions, especially illegal ones, regardless of how well they excel in

Literary Devices Of Scene In Faking It By Michael Chabon
Most authors who implement the literary device of scene in their writing do so to establish an
entry point to the universal subject they are trying to portray. In literature, scene is an experience or
moment that the author explains in great detail through various devices in order to perceive that
time is slowed. In Faking It, Michael Chabondoes exactly this, utilizing a scene to introduce the
main point of his chapter. In my essay, ________ , I made a conscience effort to mimic this literary
device; however, failed to properly utilize it as an entry point. At the forefront of Faking It ,
Michael Chabon paints a descriptive scene in which he was attempting to install a towel rack in
the bathroom. To start the chapter, Chabon dictated that the only reason he was granted this
chore was because he knew, kind of, how to use an electric drill. He then provided a descriptive
image of his efforts, explaining how he read the instruction while sagely stroking [his]
whiskers...[looking] as if [he] knew what [he] was doing and then proceeded to [drop] one of the
metal towel bars onto [his] right thumb . Chabon continually comments and hints at his
inexperience and that he was forced to sustain the appearance of competence . This passage is a
perfectly crafted depiction of a scene: Chabon utilized both imagery and diction to illustrate a man
who was unaware of how to install a towel rack, yet felt compelled and pressured into assuming the
responsibility of doing so and

Pros And Cons Of Undocumented Immigrants In The United States
Immigrants help today s society and continue to benefit themselves despite the threats thrown at
them by our president and his people. They have been portrayed as bad people. For example,
president Donald J. Trump, says that they are rapists and drug dealers. Due to these comments,
many of his supporters believe they are true. Also, his reforms bring a lot of controversy within
politics and other countries. Undocumented immigrants should be allowed to live in the United
Stateswithout fear of Trump s reforms because they work hard and deportation disrupts family life.

Stated by the Center for American Progress, an increased supply of labor as a result of
immigration is easily absorbed into the labor market as a result of increased demand for labor,
without lowering the wages of native born workers (Kugler 3). Therefore, immigrants are more
likely to be harder workers than those already in the United States because they value the
opportunities given to them in the workforce. Their hard work and dedication allows the country to
have an improved society. Moreover, according to Adriana Kugler and Patrick Oakford, our broken
immigration system stifles the contributions of immigrants and in turn withholds significant
benefits from American workers (Kugler 3). Without the labor of our immigrants, the country s
working percentage would greatly decrease. They allow our agriculture to continue to prosper. The
labor work gives the immigrants greater opportunities to improve themselves and our

I think concealed handguns should be legal in public with the right background/ history. First of
all, if a crook thinks or knows that the soon to be victim has a gun the crook will back off and
that person will not become a victim. An FBI study in 2000 showed that murders went down

The Effect Of Processing Technique And Core Thickness On...
Effect of processing technique and core thickness on fracture resistance of Lithium disilicate
copings having two different thicknesses
Keywords: IPS e.max;Press; CAD / CAM; core thickness; fracture strength.
Introduction
High strength All ceramic restorations, with different composition, structure, and processing
methods, have been introduced as an alternative to metal ceramic restorations in many applications
(1). Due to their translucency and strength, IPS e.max ceramics have become increasingly popular
as dental restorative materials (2) .They can be used as a substructure (core) to support the more
fragile veneering ceramics in dental crowns (3 5). However few data in literature were about
different coping thicknesses of IPS e.max to determine the optimum thickness which allows more
conservative preparation and gives space for the veneering material.
Increasing the fracture strength of all ceramic restorations increase their durability during function
and decrease complications such as secondary caries and periodontal diseases. There has been
growing interest in ceramic restorations due to their optimal esthetics and biocompatibility (6).
However, their use is associated with some shortcomings. Chipping of the veneering porcelain is
the most frequently encountered complication of all ceramic restorations (7). The second most
common clinical failure may be gross fracture of restoration (8). Several

However, the diversity is described as good business sense because we can expand the market
more effectively by embracing the difference. Arguably, the diversity is about diversity of
thought. The diversity of thought is a source to find innovative solutions to new business
challenges as well as provide products and services that exceed the customers expectations.
Equally, this is probably because when we respect different cultures and thought in business
units, we begin to think on open minded approach when solving challenges elsewhere. Since I
worked in multinational company, I had to deal with people from different education level. That
was not a big problem for me because when I was in university, I realized that my university was
a representative of diversity itself. My university had more than 30 different majors, with most
of the students were men. I had to learn about how to work together with those diverse
circumstances everyday because when we discussed about something it ended up with a lot of
framing from different approaches. Then when I started to work, it was easier for me because I
have learnt before how to work with people from different backgrounds. I believe that accustomed

Nonetheless, the competition was still pouring in. The advent of Energizer s Advanced Formula
happened to be in the same month as Gillette s Ultra and was claimed to last nine percent longer
than the than the Ultra. The major drawback for Gillette, however, was that no price premium was
placed on the new upgrade by Energizer and was introduced at the same price point as its
previous product. In contrast to Energizer s upgrade as well as stiff competition from other
players, Gillette launched the new Ultra in February of 1999 which claimed better performance.
This was rebutted by Energizer s super premium line of batteries described as e2 (launched in
June 2000) and was priced four to six percent higher than Ultra. Finally, in the same month,
Duracell announced its third generation of Ultra with more efficiency but no increase in price.
This all showed Gillette s inconsistency in terms of pricing and lack of strategy. It is clear that the
introduction of the Ultra led to a series of new innovations of alkaline batteries by both Energizer
and Gillette. Gillette had hoped that its innovations would be differentiated products and be
perceived industry wide as unique and valued. However, the company set too high a price premium
in order to achieve differentiation for batteries and customers simply did not accept the price
/performance proposition Duracell offered its customers. Further, the differentiation

Power, Authority and The State Essay
Waking up on the typical Monday morning, I feel groggy and confused. What day is today? I

transfer trains, and finally arriving at school along with hundreds of others. I notice that the train

The first type of authority is legal, or rational authority. Weber writes, It is concerned with how a
political order is regarded as legal in the eyes of the population...and the legitimacy is maintained
by reference to a legal code (13). Individuals or groups with legal rational authority are functional
superiors or bureaucratic officials. This type of authority rules through the law, the government, and
established norms. The reason their authority is accepted is that people generally believe rules and
regulations are necessary in order to maintain a functioning society. Examples of legal authority
figures are members of Congress, the President, the Queen of England, and average police officers.
These authority figures are able to maintain their dominance because it has been accepted as a norm
and necessity to follow the law. The second type of authority is traditional authority. Weber states,
this type of authority is: resting on an established belief in the sanctity of immemorial traditions and
legitimacy of those exercising authority under rule (12). Those with traditional authority inherit
their position from long established traditions and customs. Examples of traditional authority
figures are the Pope, doctors, and teachers. This tradition of obedience has been passed on from
generation to generation and it is seen as customary to obey those in charge of your faith, health,

Relevance Of Personality And Psychopathy
10.1.4 Relevance of personality and psychopathy in general
That the personality of a manager is a critical variable in their effectiveness is supported by the
case study, aspects of Hitler s personality being characteristically consistent, starting as empty
lectures as a young drifter, and being concretised when head of state. Whether his personality was a
critical variable in his effectiveness, or whether he happened to have a series of preoccupations that
articulated a zeitgeist in post war Germany unfortunately remains a conundrum.
Regarding the question of psychopathy as a critical variable for effective leadership, the research
proposes that the critical personality and behavioural variable for effective leadership is charisma ...

In the Machiavellian matrix, the four types occupy the different sections of the diagram
Machiavellian characterised by an extreme pragmatism, with the moral valence of the actions taken
managerially are judged by the moral legitimacy and significance of the objective. (Similar to
Blake and Mouton s managerial grid concern for task)
Criminal where both bad or evil ends and means are utilised and striven for.
Kantian with a moral emphasis on the Kantian categorical imperative of treating people as ends
rather than means, such that the managerial objective in no way can justify less than ideal
treatment of subordinates. (concern for persons in the managerial grid)
Ethical, where there is goodness of task in terms of the ends, (for example the UK charitable
requirement to be working for the public good ); and within which there is an expectation of a
high level of ethical practice or means .
A second organisational moral dichotomy explored in Ch 4 above was Paine s proposal that
unethical practice may be more efficacious, and that there is a balance to be drawn between
economic and ethical acceptability. A further four square matrix places economic acceptability

The Generation And The Millennial Generation
While driving on I 95 into the city of Philadelphia, I see dozens of advertisements to the left and
right of me, some promoting education, others jewelry, food, concerts and sporting events.
Everywhere you look, you are bound to faced with some sort of promotion. Whether it is a billboard
while driving, commercial while watching TV, or web advertisement while searching the Internet,
advertisements are everywhere. Their main purpose is to inform or persuade us, the consumers,
into buying the newest product the company is promoting at that time.
In our society we do not realize the effects marketers have on consumers. It is easy for them to
deceive people by using different techniques, like using words such as sale, convenient, latest, or
even by having appealing pictures going along with products. The main target audience that
marketers aim to influence is the millennial generation. So much of the millennial generation is
influenced through social media and technology. With such an exuberant use and understanding of
technology, marketers realized how to target the most vulnerable group of consumers. Marketer s
upfront goal is being able to sell the certain product, the underlying goal is persuading young
consumers with various marketing techniques leading to negative consequences amongst teens.
While many people may think advertisements can inform people on what they should know, the
negative influences outweigh the positive influences. Marketing has multiple negative

Top Causes Of Homelessness
Top Causes of Homelessness states 3.5 billion Americans are homeless each year (2016, 1).
There are so many different reasons people can go homeless. What needs to happen to help these
people? Volunteering organizations are one of the many deeds we can do to help the homeless in
America. Many massive cities are a huge factor America s number of homeless. More in America

When the pressure, is not frequently relived, the damage is caused and a pressure ulcer occurs.
Judy waterlow (1985) introduced the Waterlow Score, whilst working as a clinical nurse, she
designed this as a tool for her students to use as a guidance, for a risk assessment tool, to help in
maintaining skin integrity. Waterlow (1985) suggests, that as a nurse professional, we can only use
this as a guide, we must also use our own judgment, in defining the risks of the patient in our care.
The cost implications to treatment of pressure ulcer care is expensive, costing the national
healthcare service provider millions, with additional longer stay in hospital, the cost of each
pressure ulcer and even reconstructive surgery, also with the additional suffering, of the patient at
hand, the importance of minimizing the risks to pressure ulcer prevention, is imperative. Not only
to bring, the costs down, but to serve our public, to the best of, our ability, in bringing excellence,
in the care provided (Dziedzic, 2014).
First stage: What happened, whilst out on my nursing placement, in clinical practice, I was

complex mobility needs. During my shift, I assisted the patients with personal care, helping them to
wash and dress for the day, with nutrition and assisting the patients out of the bay to use the toilet
and aiding them in their mobility.

Honey Bees Pollinates Bees
Save the Bees
Bees are profound contributers to the ecosystem, but their population size is decreasing
tremendously. Without them, key factors to everyday life will be negatively affected. The honey
bees pollinates flowers. Pollination is when pollen is transferred to a flower s reproductive organs
and enables it to fertilize. When fruits and vegetables are growing, they start of as small flowers
on the plant, eventually becoming whatever food they are. Pollination is how the flowers are able
to grow into the fruit or vegetable. The natural, and best way, a plant gets pollinated is through bees.
Admittedly, some may argue that honey bees are not a necessity because there are alternate
ways to pollinate crops. For example, other insects such as butterflies, beetles, flies, and wasps
are able to pollinate (Gordon). Looking at this point of view, it may seem that bees would not be
necessary for pollination. Bees are not the only pollinating animal, so there should be no need to
protect them. These insects do not pollinate the same way as bees, so how do they do it? Active
insects get covered in pollen when visiting flowers, which then rubs off onto the next flower visited
(Gordon). Bees do essentially the same thing, except they do it purposely, making it the process
more effective. In summation, because there are other insects that have the ability to pollinate,
opposers of saving the honey bees think that it is unnecessary to aid them in survival. Bees however,

Economic Factors Of The English Colonization Of North America
I believe that we cannot say that only one factor had an impact on English colonization, as both had
a fairly significant influence. In retrospect the fact that Economic factors did have a greater impact
remains true. Merchants that migrated to North America formed Jamestown as the first settlement
and were searching for fortune and a better living then they could have in England. Jamestown was
founded under the Virginia Company, these English joint stock companies were appointed for this
reason to produce successful settlements. Another reason contributing to the English colonization of
North Americawere the economic problems and concerns that plagued the English. For this reason
they went to the Americas in search of raw materials such as gold and silver. Even people that
were not merchants, or wealthy businessmen migrated to Americas solely for the bettering of their
and their loved ones lives, by farming or other jobs available at the time. Others... Show more

Many people converted to Protestantism as Catholicism was become much too controlling of
people and individuals did not have as much freedom as they rightfully should have had. To add to
this King Henry VIII forced the Anglican Church upon English men which some obviously did not
want to obtain. After this both Catholics and Protestants were rejected by their fellow Englishmen,
fined, or even in extreme cases sent to jail. It seemed as if in this moment of time no religion could
bond together the English people. All of these factors accumulated and religious warfare was
prospering, blood was being spilled every day, so a considerable amount of people looked
towards the North American colonies (to migrate there.) So the country was a religious, economic
and political disaster, and many saw great promise in the New World, and believed they could

The Filippino Street Children
The Filippino Street Children: A Constructivist and Behavioral Analysis Introduction: Right now
there are millions of children all over the world running around playing games of tag, engrossing
themselves in intense video games, or using their time to bury their noses in a book. Very few
of these children, and their parents for that matter, realize just how privileged they are to live in
communities here these activities are available and acceptable. In some areas of the world the
children live amongst the garbage, have never seen a video game, and struggle to make enough
money for survival. The problems lead to physical, sexual and substance abuse, criminal activity
and homelessness. The Philippines is one of these places. The issues related to street children are
some of the largest struggles of the Philippines; about 1.5 million adolescences survive on
handouts and trash (Cullen, 2005). They are often subject to violence from parents as well as
public officials. Frequently they come caught up in drug abuse and sales, prostitution, and other
illegal activities in an attempt to survive their conditions. Nutrition is a foreign concept as the
children struggle to find food of any type and in any condition. The nature and complexity of these
struggles are key components to understanding how these atrocities can be abated. From plentiful
research comes a clearer understanding of the situation, followed by an exploration of key points
and finally a proposal for furthering

Data regarding its habitat affinities and population status are lacking. Larvae of Blackburn s
sphinx moth feed on plants in the nightshade family (Solanaceae). The native host plants are trees
within the genus Nothocestrum (aiea) on which the larvae consume leaves, stems, flowers, and
buds. Many of the host plants recorded for this species are not native to the Hawaiian Islands. The
non natives include: commercial tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum), tree tobacco (Nicotiana glauca),
eggplant (Solanum melongena), tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum), and possibly, Jimsonweed
(Datura stramonium). Blackburn s sphinx moth adults have been documented feeding on nectar
of the native Hawaiian morning glory species, Ipomoea indica. The Hawaiian native caper
(Capparis sandwichiana) and wild leadwort (Plumbago zeylanica) are also likely food sources.
All three plant species bear flowers that possess some characteristics favorable for moth

The Greatest Leader Of History
Adolf Hitler has been looked upon as a Genius, the most evil being to ever walk the Earth, and as

of April in 1889 and lived for fifty six years. He accomplished what unimaginable feats before he
committed suicide on the eve of defeat by the Red Army two days after his marriage to Eva Braun
on the thirtieth of April in 1945. His rise to power began with the BrГјning administration after
years of politics before he was appointed as Chancellor and eventually elected to power before he
created the most memorable time in modern history; The Holocaust. During his earlier years,
particularly those of 1919, he was made an intelligence agent and assigned to gather said
information from the German Workers Party. During this process, he ended up getting recruited
into the party as member 555. He was lulled by Anton Drexler s social views in which he had a

Mentor in the Thule Society. Sometime after, the German Workers Party changed their name to
the National Socialist German Workers Party to make themselves sound more appealing to the
masses. It was at this time that Hitler created the well known swastika banner associated with this

ADVANTAGES OF USING SUPERANNUATION TO PURCHASE A FIRST HOME
The Australian Federal Government in recent years announced a contentious proposal in which first
home buyers should access their initial superannuation savings to purchase their property. Most
recent data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) as of February 2015 highlighted the
increase in first home buyer population in their early thirties to forties by 57%. This is in contrast
to the greater number of first home buyers aged in their early twenties and thirties when housing
was more affordable, (Marinos, 2015).
The proposal for first home buyers using superannuation savings to finance the purchase of their
first home was raised initially by now current South Australian senator Nick Xenophon and former
Treasurer Joe Hockey MP back in 2014, (Marinos, 2015). The proposals forwarded by the South
Australian independent senator are meritorious for two reasons. Firstly, home buyers seeking to
gain ascendancy onto the real estate market can do so by purchasing property via superannuation
funds, (Gadd, n.d.). Secondly, using a proportion of superannuation savings could result in the
creation of affordable housing and the prevention of real estate speculation. The South Australian
senator cites a housing affordability measure currently operating in

Essay on Scarface
The Greatest Movie Ever Made
Perhaps the best movie to ever bless the eyes of any American is the 1983 Brian DePalma
gangster movie classic, Scarface. Scarface is the tale of Tony Montana and his journey through his
new life in America in the early 80 s Cuban immigrant movement. The movie depicts the American
dream, to be successful, perfectly. Scarface and its main star, Al Pacino, also shows movie watchers
in detail, the process of going from rags to riches since that is what he did in the feature. Lastly,
Scarface is perhaps the best movie to ever be made because it basically contains all the
characteristics that are that of a great movie.

In America, being successful is probably the ultimate goal of everyone. No one wants to grow up
and be unsuccessful. To many it s easily obtainable and to others it s just a dream. In Scarface, the
film shows Montana getting onto the boat that brought him to America, in Mariel, Cuba. When
he steps off the boat on the coast of Florida, he is a bum who many would look at in disgust. At
the end of this epic tale, as he steps out of his office right before he is killed, he is more
successful than most people are today and as successful as many people dream to be. To
Montana, a Cuban refugee, everyday above ground is a good day (Scarface), so obtaining success
to him, was truly a dream and in this Universal Pictures movie, it s clearly shown, making it the
best movie of all time.
Another reason that Brian DePalma s classic, Scarface, is probably the best movie of all time is
because it epitomizes the process of going from rags to riches very clearly. When Tony Montana,
stepped off the boat in Florida, he had less than nothing in his pocket and no way to get anything in
them either. As the movie evolves, through determination, dedication, hard work, and commitment,
among other things, Montana was able to have everything he could dream of. This film shows the
process in which Tony went through to go from rags to riches, and shows it in a way that far
surpasses any other movie that has attempted to do the same. The

getting the care and programs that they need. In a mixed economy, we are provided with public

Benjamin Anthony Hughes Life
Among all the Americans who put their country in front of his or her life, Mr. Benjamin
Anthony Hughes was one of them. He went to high school at Vandalia Butler High School just
north of Dayton. His story all started when a teacher in high school suggested that he should
look into ROTC as a way to help pay for his college. He signed up and received a scholarship to
Xavier University not knowing what was ahead of him. Part of the agreement for the scholarship
was that he should take part in military courses during college, then once he graduated he would
spend 4 years in the Army. He moved around the country for the next two years training for his next
place. He was stationed in Baltimore (Maryland), Seattle (Washington), Destin (Florida),... Show

Other soldiers and he were in charge of training the local police to disarm bombs and make their
country safer. He remarked that it was a great experience to work with the Iraqi people, he made
friends with a few and still periodically speak with them. At the time he was in Iraq, America had
just begun New Dawn and aiding the Iraqi Police. Mr. Hughes said This was very important and
rewarding to see how much America was helping people to rebuild their country and its
government after almost 10 years of war. We made friends with the local police chief in the
town. The Iraqi officer is a kind man who cared a lot about the safety of his city. We were
supporting by helping them in the war and they were supporting back by helping us generally win
the war. One of his favorite memories was when the Iraqi officer pointed across the desert to a hill
which was the sight of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, which is one of the seven wonders of the
ancient world. The Iraqi officer lets Mr. Hughes and the others know that when the war was over,
the officer himself would personally give the soldiers a tour of the amazing site because of the
soldiers dedication to protecting his people. It was a great compliment to Mr. Hughes and the army

Individuality In The Wall
In 1977, while on the Flesh Tour with Pink Floyd, Roger Waters conceived and wrote the elegant
rock opera, The Wall. His motivation for doing so was an increased distaste for the crassness of
the audiences during the tour. Waters himself attests that the album is fundamentally anti war, but
also claims that it is an elaborate allegory for the metaphorical wall he felt society was building for
itself. On several occasions, Waters has stated that he has often felt disconnected with the audiences
of his shows as if there were a wall separating him from them. American society has placed an
increasing emphasis on individuality since the turn of the century. Throughout The Wall, Rogers
revisits this sense of hyper individuality with an isolationist and elitist attitude of mine is better than
yours, but you cannot share mine. Individuality is the crux of the postmodern world and Rogers
embraces it as a groundbreaking artist while rejecting its notion in society creating a profound
paradox.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The story of The Wall is of protagonist, Pink, supposedly a character loosely based off of Pink Floyd
s late front man, Syd Barret and Roger Waters, himself. In the 53 song journey, Pink is born,
abused by the universe and in the last song, Run Like Hell, Pink solidifies his fate with placing
the final brick in the wall he has been building around himself his entire existence. While Pink is
merely a product of the cruel environment he was brought up in, his isolationism becomes his
poison. With the last brick in his wall, Pink has lost everything including his sanity and his once
beloved wife. Waters here references that when one separates themselves from the rest of the world,
whether it be fear, distrust, hatred, or intolerance, more harm is being done than good. The
consequences for society that behaves in this fashion are

The Contributions of Isaac Newton Essay
Sir Isaac Newton was a profound mathematician and physicist, one of the primary
scientificintellects of all time. For almost 300 years, Newton has been known as the leader in
scientific achievements of modern physical science as well as mathematical research. Dedicated to
learning and experimenting, Newton also plunged into chemistry, early history of Western
Civilization and theology, and a concentration of special studies in forms and dimensions, which
also included Solomon s Temple in Jerusalem.
On Christmas day in 1642, Newton was born to a widowed farming mother. In 1664 while still a
student, Newton studied optics and light. He investigated the refraction of light by a glass prism,
which led to discovering measurable mathematical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Late in life, Newton apologized for the algebraic style of recent mathematical progress. He favored
the classical geometrical method of the Greeks because of its clarity and rigor (5).
Newton also made extreme progress in physics. According to the well known story, Newton
witnessed an apple falling from a tree in his orchard. From this he conceivedan idea in his mind
that the same force that governs the Moon could also, control the apple. Newton then calculated
the force needed to hold the moon in its orbit comparing it to the force that pulls an object to the
ground. He furthered his experiment to include calculations from the centripetal force equation and
the pendulum sling relationship. Thus, this began the experimentation of gravity and the
development of the laws of gravity. While working with John Hooke, Newton redirected his
experiment to the problem of the path of a body subjected to a centrally directed force that varies
as the inverse square of the distance. Newton determined this to be an ellipse. With an interest in
Haley s Comet, Newton demonstrated the relationship of his new findings with his previous
findings (6). This led him to write a brief essay on mechanics, and to finally write the Principia.
The Book Principia is broken into three parts. Book I begins with the foundation of the science of
mathematics and the

Types Of Discrimination And Discrimination
TYPES OF DISCRIMINATION
вќ–Direct Discrimination: In this case the employee is treated less favorably by the employer
simply because of his or her HIV status. For example, rejecting a job application because of
employee HIV infection or excluding an HIV positive employee from the company pension
scheme because of an assumption that he or she would draw on it early. (6)
The law also protects people who are discriminated against because they are associated with a
person with HIV (for example, the partner of a person with HIV). Furthermore, it protects
employees or potential employees who are discriminated against because they are perceived to have
HIV and/or another disability, either correctly or incorrectly.(Discriminationagainst ... Show more

вќ–Discrimination arising from a disability: This deals with situations in which the employer
treats the employee less favourably for a reason related to their disability. For example, the
employer chooses a person for redundancy because persons living with HIV has had a lot of time
off related to their illnesses(that is poor attendance record arising in consequence of HIV infection).
(6) вќ–Harassment Harassment occurs where, for a reason which relates to a person s HIV status
or/and a disability, another person engages in unwanted conduct which either violates the disabled
person s dignity, or creates an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment
for him or her. (6)
вќ–Victimisation Victimization is considered if employees are penalised because they have
complained about discrimination in some way, perhaps verbally, in a letter, in a written grievance,
or in court case. A person may be victimised for giving evidence that another person has been
discriminated against. However, in this instance, the employees will need to demonstrate that:
в—ЏThey made an initial complaint (or gave evidence) of discrimination and specified that it was
disability discrimination, race discrimination, etc. Simply complaining of discrimination or unfair
treatment would not be enough(6).
в—ЏThey were treated less favourably as a result of their disability. For example, they were

The purpose of the Buffet Rule is to tax those individuals who fall under a higher income bracket
accordingly, anyone making less than the $1 million per year will be taxed less. Under the
existing law, everyone is taxed the same regardless of income levels. (Becker) During the
campaign, Obama has also agreed to temporarily extend the extender provision tax. The extender
provisions are credits and tax breaks given to corporations that primarily focus on research and
development. Obama has suggested making the credit permanent and increasing the credit rate
from 14% to 17%. The current status of the tax provision for extenders has expired. A larger tax
break for research and development will give companies an incentive to continue looking for new
ways to advance. ( Tax policy outlook for the presidential election ) In the most recent years, our
economy has plummeted and there have been several suggestions on how to regain economic
stability. Unfortunately, the tax incentives that are intended on boosting our economy have not
aided our current financial crisis. Economists have not been able to agree on incentives that would
further support the recovery of our nation; therefore, not much has been done to correct our current
financial deficit. During his time in office, Obama has ratified several tax incentives that have
helped regain some of our financial stability. The making work pay tax credit, employer incentives

Southern Cultures in the Chesapeake 1680 1800 the main theme is the outcome of a long term
economic, demographic, and political transformation that replaced the farmsteads of the first
Chesapeake settler with the kind of slave society described by modern historians. After a brief
study of the social structure of the region in the seventeenth century, this work analyzed the

Each member of a household had certain duties: men worked in fields, directing slaves and sons
in producing tobacco and grain, women cultivated vegetables, made clothes and candles, kept
house and children. Two new social classes formed out of the social and cultural changes. The
gentry and yeoman classes formed only after conflict and struggle between groups of white men
that lasted more than a century. 3 The process of class formation had begun during the mid
seventeenth century but was not completed for several generations. The social experiences of
natives and immigrants led to violent Indian troubles and economic difficulties such as, Bacon s
Rebellion in 1670, the tobacco cutting riots in 1680, tobacco regulations in 1710, and slave
conspiracies in 1720. Slave families and communities developed in part of conflicts between
slaves and masters. Masters tolerated extended slave families and cross plantation marriages and
visiting as ways to keep slaves happy and productive. The slaves though had to accept their status
as property. Although masters considered slaves to be inferior members of their own family they
would frequently sell slaves to neighbors separating families. Slaves had no choice but to suffer
the separation. By the middle of the eighteenth century, Chesapeake slaves had become both a
racial class and a laboring class. Black people

Essay about Wage Compression and Symbolic Egalitarianism
An organisations internal pay structure can affect the way employees perform to the business
strategy. Where a workers performance not only depends on the level of pay they receive (Solow,
1979, in Alexopoulos Cohen, 2003), but also takes into consideration their pay compared to
workers above and below them, those within the same occupational group, and the external labour
market (Akerlof and Yellen, 1990). Pfeffer (2005) argues that wage compression, which is the act of
reducing the size of the pay differences among employees, improves productivity. To gain
competitive advantage, organisations need to acknowledge not only hierarchical wage compression
(between management and employees) but also the differences between individuals at... Show more

There is also a range of returns employees can receive; the psychological relational returns (learning
opportunities, employment security), and total compensation returns which are transactional
(benefits such as work/life balance, allowances, as well as cash compensation and bonuses)
(Milkovich, Newman, Gerhart, 2011).
However, the validity of Pfeffers argument is contestable. Although compressing the pay structure
supports fairness and equality, there is also the problem of creating the opposite outcome. When
wage differentials are eliminated, it may not be perceived as fair and create a negative effect on
effort and motivation (Kraft, 1994). A Swedish study demonstrates this negative effect, whereby
the higher paid workers morale and effort subsided leading to lower outputs as they did not feel
valued for their skills (Hibbs and Locking, 2000, in Alexopoulos Cohen, 2003). Therefore, wage
differentials aid in distinguishing between workers abilities and responsibilities to organisational
performance (Beaumont Harris, 2003). Theorists have thus developed a counter argument, that it is
in fact wage dispersion that leads to increased effort and performance (Lallemand, Plasman, Rycx,
2004). Instead of emphasising co operation, Lazear and Rosen s (1981) tournament theory
highlights the need to differentiate pay, as larger variations are more motivating than smaller or
equal differences.

The Business Case For The Public Cloud
Enterprises around the world would be wise to heed 50 Cent s mantra Get Rich or Die Tryin when
considering the implications of not getting to the public cloud. We at Cocolevio, an implementation
partner of Mooor Insights Strategy, estimate that over 50% of IT spend will be going to public
cloud vendors such as Amazon Web Servicesor SaaS vendors like Salesforce.com Inc. by 2019.
This means there is around a $140B opportunity in this space. The cost savings, reduction in
capital spending, speed to market, flexibility and global access derived from public cloud mean
those enterprises that effectively use the public cloud are better positioned to Get Rich than their
competitors who have higher cost structures and less nimble IT platforms. This trend is only set to
continue as the business case for moving to public cloud only becomes more compelling, with the
traditional arguments against public cloud around security and lack of control diminishing.
Vendor lock in will continue to be a concern but we see many companies willing to sacrifice a bit
of lock in for the many, many benefits of public cloud.
With this in mind, it is prudent for any CIO to have a migration strategy to the public cloud. It is
now generally accepted that at least some workload and functions of an organization will need to be
moved in order to be competitive. Recently, the poster child for Amazon Inc., Netflix Inc.
announced that they closed their door on their last datacenter. Although by no

Plato the Philosopher Essay
Plato was a philosopher who was born in Athens (470 390 BCE), and was also a student of

realms or realities. He believed that general concepts of knowledge were predestined, or placed in
the soul before birth even occurred in living things. Plato believed that the cosmos was intelligible,

  • 2. Perfectionism Among Athletes The significance of including perfectionism in this proposed study is due to it being a precursor of burnout as well as having an association with burnout (Buyukbayraktar Temiz, 2015; Hill, Hall, Appleton Kozub, 2008; Taris et al., 2010). Previous studies have reported positive relationships between perfectionism and burnout among athletes (e.g., Aghdasi, 2014; Appleton, Hall Hill, 2009; Chen, Kee, Chen Tsai, 2008), coaches (Tashman, Tenenbaum, Eklund, 2010) students (Zhang, Gan Cham, 2007), and educators (Buyukbayraktar Temiz, 2015; Flett, Hewitt Hallett, 1995; Stoeber Rennert, 2008). • 3. Shamanism in Korea Shamanism is the oldest and most important religions in Korea. The music, singing and dance constitute the most prominent components of their ritual (Kut), having a strong influence on Korean folk music, and is a part of Korean national heritage as well. Interestingly, the scholar Hahn Man Young, found that the word nongak (famer s band) in Korean, was originally synonymous with kut, and both practices use similar instruments in their performances. According to the scholar Jongsung Yang, the believers think their own mistakes trigger bed things happen, displease and offend the god or the spirits. So they hire shamans (Mudang female shaman, or Paksu male shaman) to communicate with deities or ghosts. This includes singing or dancing in order to entertain the deities, as an invitation to possess the shamans, allowing them to answer people s questions, and solve problems. It becomes a semi religionin contemporary Korea. The shaman ritual music shows respect to deities or ghosts, by pleasing them in hope of help people solve their problems; therefore the Shamanic ritual is usually dramatic and improvised. It serves for the urban life, for the people who need help from the spirit world, thus its music, singing, and dancing needs to be understood by civilians. Its mystical peculiarities also make significant differences from other religions: they do not have religion doctrine; no religious ancestor, but they do worship many deities, even from other religions (such as ... • 5. Socrates Unexamined Life Is Not Worth Living The Unexamined Life Is Not Worth Living When Socrates was being accused, he claimed that The unexamined life is not worth living In the apology, Socrates did not use some special debating skills to get sympathy. On the contrary, Socrates s apology is righteous and unflinching. He believed what he said and what he thought are good for the Athenian citizens, youth, and the country. He believed he must be the improver of the citizens and he was important to others. In the apology, the bold statement The unexamined life is not worth living have two meanings. On the one hand, Socrateswants to warn the citizens to examine and reflect upon their own life by virtue and justice and get spirit growth. On the other hand, compared with his own life, Socrates is more willing to examine himself and others and discourse about virtue and the form of the world. Death can help him get away from the unexamined life. In Socrates s Allegory of Cave and the divided line, Socrates thinks people cannot see the real form of objects and they cannot rightly reflect the world and upon themselves . The unexamined life is not worth living is like his last admonishment to the citizens. • 6. The Pros And Cons Of Television Shows If you have ever watched TV, you might notice many commonalities and trends between many of the TV shows that are on air. The shows usually follow similar storylines of a protagonist (usually male) who struggles with their own moral values, usually stirring up trouble for themselves and those around them. Now you re probably asking yourself: Hm I wonder why so many shows follow similar patterns? Well the answer to that question is because of YOU! It s all your fault that TV can be so monotonous and repetitive. You are a part of a giant collective that drives what TV shows are being shown, what TV shows are being cancelled, and even when TV shows are being played. You are a part of the audience. The audience is what drives TV shows to be the entertaining platforms that they are meant to be, but they are also the most crippling aspect of the televisionitself. If I wanted to pitch a TV show to a TV network, the script would be immediately thrown in the trash. This is because I am nowhere to be found in the hierarchy of the television network. The television hierarchy makes it almost impossible for lesser known writers and producers to release their work on popular networks. Also, newer shows do not get as much of a fighting chance as others because these new shows must compete with other popular TV shows for the best time slots, therefore getting less viewers, increasing the chance the network pulls the plug on new shows. When TV networks try to decide what shows to put on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Research Paper On The Handmaid s Tale By Margaret Atwood THT Research Essay The best books are both engaging and realistic. To create realism, the author must think of how people would act in a given situation, not just what s convenient for an interesting plot. Margaret Atwood accomplishes that in A Handmaid s Tale when creating her post war society. She strung together different historical events for an accurate portrayal of decisions people in power would make. Forced childbearing, the feminist movement, and puritanism were some of the actions that inspired Atwood. During the Nazi regime in Germany, Heinrich Himmler came up with a strategie to create a master race called the Lebensborn program. He created breeding facilities in which Aryan women were recruited to be impregnated by S.S. soldiers... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Numerous areas of American life needed to be reformed in order for women to be equal to man. Many woman believed that a large issue in america was the sexualization and objectification of women. The Miss World Contest was found guilty of this crime. In 1968 hundreds of feminists showed up at the event to protest the contest that places imposible standards of beauty on women, and expects them to be pure and innocent but not celibate (Napikoski). Another large issue was violence and rape against woman. Women often feared going outside alone and talking to male strangers out of fear. Because of this another movement called Take Back the Night was formed. It serves as a means for women to unite and voice our desire to end the fear and perceived responsibility women experience when it comes to sexual assault, harassment, and other forms of violence ( Take ). Offred s mother participated in marches such as this one. When Atwood created Gilead, she put a stop to these issues. Women are seen as sacred and untouchable; contact between men and women stopped outside of business relationships. Media that shows too much skin has been censored or destroyed. Past feminist battles are now used as a brainwashing technique in the Red centers. Videos of marches are shown to display how hard women once had to fight in order to be safe. The women are told they have still have freedom despite the heavy restrictions placed on their life. In the days of anarchy there was freedom to. Now you are being given freedom from (Atwood 24). In ancient times, men dominated societies. Women were viewed as the caretaker, a provider for life. Women who did participate were criticized and were thought of as threatening. In 18th century America, women were considered inferior to men because of the belief that women are the weaker sex. A woman s purpose in life was to take care of the house, children, and husband. When they did want to participate in recreational sport, they need to be able to negotiate with men and with other women because societies did not make it easy for women to participate. This led to the formation of organizations like the national committee on Women s Sports, to provide rules and standards for athletic participation for women and girls. The AAU, Amateur Athletic Union, which was under the control of men, took control over women s athletics. This stirred up conflict amongst physical educators and other leaders like, Lou Henry Hoover, Blanche Thrilling, and Agnes Wayman who opposed the AAU control and wanted women to govern the organization not men. They were against it because only women could understand the psychological, motivational, and physiological need for women. (Costa Guthrie, 91) Lou Henry Hoover was the leader of the National Amateur Athletic Federation, which was an organization that supported sport for everyone. She wanted to have a separate Women s division because of the different ideal standards of women s sport; and so was formed the women s division of the NAAF. This organization set standards for women s competition and encouraged them to participate in both school and non school events. There still was a belief that women were too frail physically and mentally to participate in intense competition like Olympics. However, in 1932, Mildred Babe Didrikson disproved this belief by winning two Olympic gold medals and one silver medal in track and field. She had also won every golf tournament she competed in. President Obama s recommendations for the reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) and his education plan include provisions to award merit pay to teachers in an attempt to obtain and retain effective teachers as measured by student academic achievement. These proposals are supported by budgeted funding for the 2011 fiscal year with additional funding included in the optional, competitive 1.35 billion Race to the Top Fund. A number of different merit paysystems exist. Some reward entire schools or districts when passing rates on standardized tests are achieved, while others reward individual teachers for passing rates. Students in economically disadvantaged schools are more likely to have teachers rated in the bottom quartile for teacher effectiveness as measured by raising student achievement (Education Equality Project, 2010). Previous Attempts at Merit Pay Traditionally, efforts to obtain effective teachers have focused primarily upon raising the entry bar via credential, licensure, or certification requirements. However, research has consistently demonstrated that credentials, licensure, and advanced degrees are of little value in predicting teacher effectiveness (Education Equality Project, 2010; Green Forster, 2008). The use of merit pay to obtain, retain, and affect student achievement is a lesser used, but not unknown, methodology. In the 1920s, 40 to 50 percent of all urban school districts adopted a merit pay plan. Interest waned and then resurfaced in the 1950s and, by 1960; one in ten public schools adopted a form of merit pay. Interest declined in the 1970s and rose again in the 1980s, and in 2010. Prior to the 1980s, research was primarily focused upon the difficulty experienced in defining and measuring quality teaching (Cohen and Murnane, 1985). Due to the inability to find reliable and valid definitions and measures of teacher quality, staff dissatisfaction and dissension was experienced when using merit pay plans (Murnane Cohen, 1986). The great milestones of technology has led us into the new Technological Age of the 21st century, whereby innovations such as the Internet allows information to be spread in seconds. Today, public п¬Ѓgures such as celebrities and politicians play an increasing role in our society, shaping our views and mindsets of the world. Thus, it is especially important that they are held accountable for their actions, even those undertaken in private. Thus, as public п¬Ѓgures play a role as representatives of the society, they should be accountable for their actions, even those undertaken in private, as it is only fair to the public, whom they represent. Even though it is often argued that there is no need for public п¬Ѓgures to account for their private activities as long as they perform in their jobs, what they do in private inevitably matters as it would not only create a lasting impact on the society, but also when it breaks the law. Performance at work does not exempt anyone from obeying the laws of the land, and public п¬Ѓgures still have to account for their actions without shrinking from the responsibility. Even though sports such as tennis were highly successful and accomplished at the college, Dr. Tatum saw that the funding of the athletic was a detriment to the school rather than an added bonus for increasing revenue or attracting students. Therefore, Dr. Tatum decided to make a decision that would not just benefit a few athletes on campus, but the entire 2,100 students and faculty that make up the Spelman College community. • 15. Literary Devices Of Scene In Faking It By Michael Chabon Most authors who implement the literary device of scene in their writing do so to establish an entry point to the universal subject they are trying to portray. In literature, scene is an experience or moment that the author explains in great detail through various devices in order to perceive that time is slowed. In Faking It, Michael Chabondoes exactly this, utilizing a scene to introduce the main point of his chapter. In my essay, ________ , I made a conscience effort to mimic this literary device; however, failed to properly utilize it as an entry point. At the forefront of Faking It , Michael Chabon paints a descriptive scene in which he was attempting to install a towel rack in the bathroom. To start the chapter, Chabon dictated that the only reason he was granted this chore was because he knew, kind of, how to use an electric drill. He then provided a descriptive image of his efforts, explaining how he read the instruction while sagely stroking [his] whiskers...[looking] as if [he] knew what [he] was doing and then proceeded to [drop] one of the metal towel bars onto [his] right thumb . Chabon continually comments and hints at his inexperience and that he was forced to sustain the appearance of competence . This passage is a perfectly crafted depiction of a scene: Chabon utilized both imagery and diction to illustrate a man who was unaware of how to install a towel rack, yet felt compelled and pressured into assuming the responsibility of doing so and ... The major drawback for Gillette, however, was that no price premium was placed on the new upgrade by Energizer and was introduced at the same price point as its previous product. In contrast to Energizer s upgrade as well as stiff competition from other players, Gillette launched the new Ultra in February of 1999 which claimed better performance. This was rebutted by Energizer s super premium line of batteries described as e2 (launched in June 2000) and was priced four to six percent higher than Ultra. Finally, in the same month, Duracell announced its third generation of Ultra with more efficiency but no increase in price. This all showed Gillette s inconsistency in terms of pricing and lack of strategy. It is clear that the introduction of the Ultra led to a series of new innovations of alkaline batteries by both Energizer and Gillette. • 31. Honey Bees Pollinates Bees Save the Bees Bees are profound contributers to the ecosystem, but their population size is decreasing tremendously. Without them, key factors to everyday life will be negatively affected. The honey bees pollinates flowers. Pollination is when pollen is transferred to a flower s reproductive organs and enables it to fertilize. When fruits and vegetables are growing, they start of as small flowers on the plant, eventually becoming whatever food they are. Pollination is how the flowers are able to grow into the fruit or vegetable. The natural, and best way, a plant gets pollinated is through bees. Admittedly, some may argue that honey bees are not a necessity because there are alternate ways to pollinate crops. For example, other insects such as butterflies, beetles, flies, and wasps are able to pollinate (Gordon). Looking at this point of view, it may seem that bees would not be necessary for pollination. Bees are not the only pollinating animal, so there should be no need to protect them. These insects do not pollinate the same way as bees, so how do they do it? Active insects get covered in pollen when visiting flowers, which then rubs off onto the next flower visited (Gordon). Bees do essentially the same thing, except they do it purposely, making it the process more effective. In summation, because there are other insects that have the ability to pollinate, opposers of saving the honey bees think that it is unnecessary to aid them in survival. Bees however, ... Very few of these children, and their parents for that matter, realize just how privileged they are to live in communities here these activities are available and acceptable. The problems lead to physical, sexual and substance abuse, criminal activity and homelessness. The Philippines is one of these places. The issues related to street children are some of the largest struggles of the Philippines; about 1.5 million adolescences survive on handouts and trash (Cullen, 2005). Most recent data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) as of February 2015 highlighted the increase in first home buyer population in their early thirties to forties by 57%. This is in contrast to the greater number of first home buyers aged in their early twenties and thirties when housing was more affordable, (Marinos, 2015). The proposal for first home buyers using superannuation savings to finance the purchase of their first home was raised initially by now current South Australian senator Nick Xenophon and former Treasurer Joe Hockey MP back in 2014, (Marinos, 2015). The proposals forwarded by the South Australian independent senator are meritorious for two reasons. Firstly, home buyers seeking to gain ascendancy onto the real estate market can do so by purchasing property via superannuation funds, (Gadd, n.d.). Secondly, using a proportion of superannuation savings could result in the creation of affordable housing and the prevention of real estate speculation. Canada and the US should not have a common economic system with little government involvement. Having a mixed economy is better in many ways. In a mixed economy, not only do you get all the benefits of a market economy, you also get a couple of other benefits. In a mixed economy, there are public services and programs provided, a good mix of competition and cooperation, and the government can control and regulate the means of production. In a mixed economy, the government can intercede in the places of need. This can help reduce issues like unemployment, poverty, and can help with making sure everybody is getting the care and programs that they need. In a mixed economy, we are provided with public schooling, Welfare programs, free health care, employment insurance, pension, child tax credit and we are even fortunate enough to be provided with small things such as recycle and garbage pick up. Having things like public schooling makes sure that children get the education they need in a safe and enjoyable environment, which will have allowed them to have a positive learning experience and hopefully one day be able to contribute to our economy as well. • 44. Individuality In The Wall In 1977, while on the Flesh Tour with Pink Floyd, Roger Waters conceived and wrote the elegant rock opera, The Wall. His motivation for doing so was an increased distaste for the crassness of the audiences during the tour. Waters himself attests that the album is fundamentally anti war, but also claims that it is an elaborate allegory for the metaphorical wall he felt society was building for itself. On several occasions, Waters has stated that he has often felt disconnected with the audiences of his shows as if there were a wall separating him from them. American society has placed an increasing emphasis on individuality since the turn of the century. Throughout The Wall, Rogers revisits this sense of hyper individuality with an isolationist and elitist attitude of mine is better than yours, but you cannot share mine. Individuality is the crux of the postmodern world and Rogers embraces it as a groundbreaking artist while rejecting its notion in society creating a profound paradox.... Late in life, Newton apologized for the algebraic style of recent mathematical progress. He favored the classical geometrical method of the Greeks because of its clarity and rigor (5). Newton also made extreme progress in physics. According to the well known story, Newton witnessed an apple falling from a tree in his orchard. From this he conceivedan idea in his mind that the same force that governs the Moon could also, control the apple. Newton then calculated the force needed to hold the moon in its orbit comparing it to the force that pulls an object to the ground. He furthered his experiment to include calculations from the centripetal force equation and the pendulum sling relationship. Thus, this began the experimentation of gravity and the development of the laws of gravity. While working with John Hooke, Newton redirected his experiment to the problem of the path of a body subjected to a centrally directed force that varies as the inverse square of the distance. Newton determined this to be an ellipse. With an interest in Haley s Comet, Newton demonstrated the relationship of his new findings with his previous findings (6). There is also a range of returns employees can receive; the psychological relational returns (learning opportunities, employment security), and total compensation returns which are transactional (benefits such as work/life balance, allowances, as well as cash compensation and bonuses) (Milkovich, Newman, Gerhart, 2011). However, the validity of Pfeffers argument is contestable. Although compressing the pay structure supports fairness and equality, there is also the problem of creating the opposite outcome. When wage differentials are eliminated, it may not be perceived as fair and create a negative effect on effort and motivation (Kraft, 1994). A Swedish study demonstrates this negative effect, whereby the higher paid workers morale and effort subsided leading to lower outputs as they did not feel valued for their skills (Hibbs and Locking, 2000, in Alexopoulos Cohen, 2003). Therefore, wage differentials aid in distinguishing between workers abilities and responsibilities to organisational performance (Beaumont Harris, 2003). Theorists have thus developed a counter argument, that it is in fact wage dispersion that leads to increased effort and performance (Lallemand, Plasman, Rycx, 2004). Instead of emphasising co operation, Lazear and Rosen s (1981) tournament theory highlights the need to differentiate pay, as larger variations are more motivating than smaller or equal differences. ...
