Ethnic And National Identities Of Koreans Essay
Ethnic and national identities of Koreans in Kazakhstan by Yekaterina Pak
On March 1 2013, in the apartment of my older brother, in small town in the north of
Kazakhstan, everything was prepared for the celebration of my niece s first year birthday that
Koreans usually call tol . Small low wooden table was covered with different subjects
symbolizing various good wishes for our little girl s future: a spool of thread for long life, a
book for knowledge, bowl of rice for prosperity, money for richness and others. My niece was
wearing special Korean dress hanbok that was brought from Korea and was handed over among
my relatives whenever they have their own tol . The tradition of first year birthday has been always
kept in my family as a reminiscence of our ethnic belonging. Currently in Kazakhstan live about one
hundred thousands ethnic Koreans whose families were deported to the Soviet Kazakhstan almost
eighty years ago from the Far East. Stalin s repression politics regarding ethnic minorities who were
living next to the borders has significantly transformed identities of the deported people. How do
Koreans in Kazakhstan experience their ethnic and national identities in the context of multi ethnic
state? Living all my life in Kazakhstan and being a third generation of ethnic Koreans living outside
the place of ethnic origin, I have never questioned my identities and have never thought how
important it can be. In order to investigate my own quest for identity in this

The Frontier as a Place of Ethnic and Religion Conflict by...
The Frontier Patricia Nelson Limerick describes the frontier as being a place of where racial
tension predominately exists. In her essay, The Frontier as a Place of Ethnic and Religion
Conflict, Limerick says that the frontier wasn t the place where everyone got to escape from their
problems from previous locations before; instead she suggested that it was the place in which we
all met. The frontier gave many the opportunities to find a better life from all over the world. But
because this chance for a new life attracted millions of people from different countries across the
seas, the United States experienced an influx of immigrants. Since the east was already preoccupied
by settlers, the west was available to new settlement and that... Show more content on

The frontier became the place where many races blamed others for their problems. Such as
when after the gold rush in California happened and many men started to pour in in hopes to
find riches and jobs (53). But when they arrived, there were no riches, and what little jobs were
available, immigrants from Asia had already taken it, such as the Chinese. This caused the men
who came looking for riches and jobs to become violent. In Wyoming Gunfight: An attack on
Chinatown, 1885, Hon. Huang Sih Chuen reported on how there was a group of white men who
formed the Rock Springs wanted to rid the land of all Chinamen started to kill and rob Chinese
men in the streets of Chinatown, and murdering others by burning them alive in buildings (46).
The Rock Springs were the many people who blamed the Chinese for the lack of availability for
jobs. They claimed that the Chinese are willing to work for less than the whites do; therefore no
strikes can be done so that wages can be raised. However, Hon. Huang Sih Chuen states that in the
beginning they joined with the whites to go into strike with whites, and yet the whites still blame
them and start to murder the Chinese (46). The tension of the whites being unable to find jobs with
good pay rose and caused them to act out and blame the Chinese for all of their misfortune. This
lead to the irradiation of the Chinese in Chinatown and caused

Tetra-Amelia Syndrome
Tetra Amelia syndrome is a very rare disorder characterized by the absence of all four limbs. (
Tetra is the Greek word for four , and Amelia refers to the failure of an arm or leg to develop
before birth.) This syndrome can also cause severe malformations of other parts of the body,
including the face and head, heart, nervous system, and skeleton. The lungs are underdeveloped in
many cases, which makes breathing difficult or impossible. Because children with tetra amelia
syndrome have such serious medical problems, most are stillborn or die shortly after birth. Tetra
Amelia syndrome has been reported in only a few families worldwide. Management of persons
who survive will depend on the presence and severity of associated malformations... Show more

Cytogenetic studies showed that three of the affected fetuses were female, and one was male. In
the first affected female, these findings were cleft lip with cleft palate; gastroschisis ;
diaphragmatic defect with malposition of the right lung; agenesis of the left kidney, left supra
adrenal gland; and spleen; a malformed uterus, with only a right rudimentary ovary and salpinx;
and only one umbilical artery. In the second affected fetus, a female, findings were a protrusion
and cataract of the left eye, microphthalmia of the right eye, cleft lip with a cleft plate, malformed
nose with a single naris and choanal atresia, hypoplasia of the pelvis, and atresia of the urethra.
In the third affected fetus, a male, findings were agenesis of the left kidney and left supra
adrenal gland, hypoplasia of the pelvis, persistence of cloaca, and no external genitalia. Informed
consent was obtained from all family members involved in a study; ethical approval was given by
local ethics committee. Following the initial genome screen, individual markers were genotyped

of an autosomal of inheritance, selected informative markers were analyzed for fetus IV: 4 when
identical alleles were shared homozygous by fetus IV: 7 and IV: 8, when one copy

Why Salary Caps Are Truly Unfair
The debates have gone on every sense the very first year free agency was introduced. I think
after all this paper is done I truly believe that I will be able to show you evidence on why salary
caps are truly unfair. So let s have some facts that prove my theory with facts from their lives.
Most coaches can look at talent and see potential at such a young age. When coaches see this
they push Athletes to the next level making them ready for the college. That s why you see kids
pushing themselves so hard in the gym, they think they can make it to the league. Look at it this
way, in all sports except baseball, the chances of going pro are less than 2%. So why pay these
guys what they worked their whole entire life for get paid, they honestly deserve it. Let s look at
it this way, Professional athletes have worked their entire life for everything they now have.
Salary caps are not a problem in sports, this has been a very heated debate throughout every year
in sports. There s new free agents every single year, with some of the potential who deserve
more than 300 million dollars over the next 10 years. Then there s some who don t even come
close to making 1 million on a one year deal. Many people sit here and could fire rapid shots on
why salary caps should be established in sports. While others believe that this could stop some
people of what they should be making. Thats besides the point, I 100% believe that salary caps
should be abolished in pro sports. I have some great

The Giver Moral Disobedience
Moral Disobedience The Giver, a dystopian futuristic novel written by young adult author Lois
Lowry won the 1994 Newbery Medal, and sold more than 12 million copies since its publication,
according to USA Today, (McClurg). This literary masterpiece presents the reader with an unusual
society that has eliminated pain, fear, war, emotion, and diversity. But as Jonas discovers the
previous world, and uncovers many shocking secrets of his society, he finds himself living in an
environment filled with vile practices that he can no longer tolerate. Jonas emphasizes the
importance of reacting to unlawful orders or inhumane practices. If a law is unjust, a man is not

WW2 took the lives of more than 72.4 million people, ( 11 Facts About the Holocaust. ) and killed
more than two thirds of all the people living in Europe at the time, ( World War 2 Statistics. ). As
part of their service to their country, the Nazis were commanded to perform horrific actions any
reasonable person would question. These tortures included, putting people s hands in boiling water
until the skin and fingernails came off...pulling teeth and cutting and twisting off the ears; running
electric current through the victims... ( Nazi Torture and Medical Experimentation. ) Prisoners
were submerged in ice water to see the effects of hypothermia, injected with chemicals and poisons
to test their effectiveness, sterilized, vivisected, and operated on without anesthetic, (Smallwood).
When many of these prominent Nazi soldiers were put on trial in Nuremberg, Germany, they
argued they were serving their country, following orders from their superior. Here, we confront the
thought provoking question of whether it is just to obey your superior or serve your nation while
breaking the moral code of humanity. These Nazis committed acts and imposed punishments upon
their prisoners, that many have labeled as sinister, inhumane, unjust, and gruesome. But can we
blame them for following the demands of their superiors and their country? Is it

Canadian War Museum Exhibition Analysis
Introduction: The Canadian War Museum provides an exhibition specifically on ways in which
women lives were transiting throughout the First and Second World War. The exhibition laid
many artifacts which came from women, such as photographs, voice overs, diaries, and souvenirs.
The artifacts played a prominent role in understanding the experience of the World Wars from a
woman point of view. The artifacts provide an understanding of the stories that women were facing
challenges with. The challenges allowed women to grow and show what they are capable of. Since
men were occupied fighting with their allies women took control and started participating and
working. The techniques the exhibition provides the audience with used to produce a powerful
identity to remind women of their capabilities. Women in the era of the World Wars have embraced
their hidden techniques which the exhibition exposes, which aids in forming the exhibition s
narrative. The World War Women at the Canadian War Museum explore ways in which women
unfold their personal stories of the loss of their loved ones, the transition from home to jobs, and
propaganda. The World War Women is a great exhibition to

women wearing a uniform, exposing her biceps. This kind of propaganda impacted women since it
changed their domestic habits and encouraged them to join factories and farms. The government

Cause And Effect Of Cocaine
One of the most detrimental and addictive narcotics in the world today is cocaine. Cocaine dates
back as early as 3000 BC. Ancient Incas used the coca leaves to counter the effects of living in
thin mountain air. Native Peruvians in the 1500 s chewed the plant strictly for religious
ceremonies. Andean Indians are believed to chew the leaves of the coca plant to increase their
energy for work while decreasing their hunger and pain. It wasn t until 1859 when a German
chemist Albert Niemann successfully extracted the narcotic from the coca leaf. In the 1880 s, it
was freely prescribed by physicians for maladies as exhaustion, depression, and morphine addiction
and was available in many patent medicines ( Cocaine), until users and doctors began to realize its
dangers and side effects. While it was not fully understood at the time, cocaine has many
devastating and lasting effects on the user.
Today, cocaine is commonly derived from the coca plant that is most commonly grown in
Columbia but also Peru and Bolivia. It is harvested and processed into a coca paste which the
base of is extracted and turned into the white powder form of cocaine. Once the powder is made
it is often mixed with laundry detergent, laxatives, or boric acid to cut down the potency and have
more to distribute. Cocaine can be used snorting, smoking, injecting or swallowed. The United
States outlawed cocaine in the early 1920 s but it wasn t until the 1970 s and middle of the 1980 s

Childhood Memories in My Papa s Waltz by Theodore Roethke...
Childhood Memories in My Papa s Waltz by Theodore Roethke and Piano by D.H. Lawrence
My Papa s Waltz by Theodore Roethke and Piano by D.H. Lawrence are two poems in which
grown men recall memories of their childhood. My Papa s Waltz has a quietly sad, almost resigned
tone as Roethke relives his nightly dances with his father as a young boy. Lawrence s Piano is
somewhat dreamy as a man is taken back by a song to his childhood. While both are presented to us
through similar personas, striking differences are apparent throughout the two poems.
My Papa s Waltz is the pensive recollection of a boy s nightly waltz around the house in the arms
of his father. Roethke s poem gives a voice to the often silent internal ... Show more content on

And yet at the end of the stanza, we are shown just how defenseless the child is as his father
drags him around the room, scraping his son s ear with his belt buckle. Roethke makes the most
important statement in the last line of his poem, ? waltzed me off to bed Still clinging to your
shirt (479). Clinging, and all that the word implies: fear, sadness, love and admiration, is both
the greatest strength and obstacle the boy will encounter in his relationship with his father. In
contrast to My Papa s Waltz , D. H. Lawrence s Piano is a man s remembrance of a happy
childhood. Lawrence sets a dream like tone in the first stanza of his poem as we are taken back
through the years to a man s boyhood. Taken back by a song, the man is transported back to the
Sundays of his childhood where he would sit beneath the piano as his mother played hymns.
While melancholy, Lawrence shows us that his persona yearns for the happy childhood he once
had with the line, The glamour Of childish days is upon me, my manhood is cast Down in the
flood of remembrance, I weep like a child for the past (574). The author establishes a connection
with readers through his use of music as a means of passage through time with the statement, In
spite of myself, the insidious mastery of song Betrays me back,? (574). Through this use of music

Informative Speech On Factory Farming
It is possible, I think, to say that a Christian agriculture is formed upon the understanding that it is
sinful for people to misuse or destroy what they did not make. The creation is a unique,
irreplaceable gift, therefore to be used with humility, respect, and skill Wendell Berry (Berry, The
Unsettling of America: Culture and Agriculture). This quote speaks numbers to me. I believe that
agriculture, both animals and plants, should be farmed with humility, respect and skill, as said by
Wendell Berry. It has, however, become a concern of mine that this is not the case in large
industrial farms. The purpose of my speech is to persuade my audience that there is a need for
large scale production of food to feed the growing population, but there needs to be some
restrictions placed on certain practices in factory farming. I first became interested in agriculture
when I joined 4 H and have since learned more through farming and studying animal science here at
Penn State. Even though we need factory farming, factory farming should have restrictions because
Confined Animal Feeding Operations and monoculture practices are doing more harm than good.
Before we get started, I want to address and define a few key terms that I will be using throughout
my speech. First term I want to address is factory farming. I may also refer to this as industrial
farming or industrial agriculture. According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, factory farming,
or industrial agriculture is the system of chemically intensive food production developed in the
decades after World War II, featuring enormous single crop farms and animal production facilities
(Union of Concerned Scientists, Industrial Agriculture). The next important key term is Confined
Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO). According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a
Confined Animal Feeding Operation is a large operation where animals are kept and raised in
confined situations (USDA, Animal Feeding Operations). The final term I want to define before
starting is monoculture. According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, monoculture is the cultivation
or growth of a single crop or organism especially on agriculture or forest land (Merriam Webster,
monoculture).

Argumentative Essay On Animal Welfare
Health, benefit, well being, progress, care, profit, thriving, all words that are synonyms to welfare.
Animal welfare has been an agricultural issue for several decades. Animal welfare refers to the
physical, emotional, and mental state an animal is in. There are several organization in the United
States along with other corporations around the world that have the same mission; to promote
animalwelfare. This issue has a deep rooted history, various legislative acts being voted on and
passed, as well as many effects from these organizations, and legislative bills. Animal farms find
their first start in 7500 BC where goats and sheep were farmed for their resources such as wool,

When these laws are passed, producers are burdened with rules and regulations that they must
follow. For example, it could be involving the slaughter, transportation, or shelter the livestock is
housed in. The law could require a certain amount of square footage or acreage per a selected
number of livestock. Next the middleman is affected. The middleman could be anyone from a
grocery store owner to an owner of a store that sells things that use animal products. Usually the
laws require farmers to use a more expensive route to caring for an animal thus the farmer has to
raise his or her prices when selling the animal or product. The grocery store owner then would
have to pay more for the animal products he is purchasing, but he would also be able to advertise
depending on the product that his products were organic, antibiotic free, or free of animal testing.
This could both benefit or drawback his business depending on the consumers in the area. The
consumer is the final group to be affected by animal welfare acts. There are both positive and
negatives to the consumer side. The positives to the consumer side is that they can take advantage
of antibiotic free, organic, animal testing free and other specialized products. If consumers are
conscious of what they are putting in and on their bodies they would appreciate the choices these
laws allow them. The

Great Assyrians And Egyptian Pharaohs
Throughout art history many rulers have faced the same problems that come to even the most
common of people. No matter how much power a dynasty ruler gained, they could not feel and
ensure for themselves a valiant future after death. Great Assyrians and Egyptian Pharaohs alike
wanted to ensure their absolute power in this life and the next. From art they could make sure that
their image would have the best chance of surviving even after they themselves have passed away.
In eras where a new ruler could change and deplete the entire region, art was a long lasting image

In either case it is from the same area and Mesopotamian era. During this time art was mostly
military, and the most important parts of the palace were stored with scenes of war and chase
(Delaporte). A place where the griffin s literal and figurative image of strength would fit right in.
The Furniture Plaque Carved in Relief with a Griffin in a Floral Landscape is a square plaque
measuring 7.8 cm by 6.1 cm, and carved out of ivory from an elephant tusk, most likely from
African elephants imported from south of Egypt (The Met.). The picture on the face of the plaque
is of a griffin, an animal having the head and wings of an eagle attached to a body and
hindquarters of a lion ( Griffin ). The griffin shown has sharp talons and beak with pointed eyes.
Lions were repeatedly seen throughout Assyrian artwork (Ascalone). The muscular legs and
abdomen paired with a strong neck and flanks gave a symbolic image of the ideal solider or
army. People in this era knew how lions would have appeared face to face, untamed and never
enclosed. To a people with needed protection from lions, their image represented a dominance and
power. Two tenons, or pieces of wood that would have joined this artwork with another, suggest
that there were more works of art surrounding it (The Met.). Other animals were also symbolic and
literal figures for the Assyrians as they could represent tributes of power to characteristics such as
being regal. For example, the

Traditional Management Styles And Disciplinary Techniques...
If you do that again, you will be in big trouble! This is an exclamation that is heard all around the
world, in many different languages. It is heard in houses, schools, play groups, and many other
places. It is said by parents and teachers alike. The problem with that phrase is the consequence.
Alfie Kohnand Forrest Gathercoal are two experts in classroom management. They both believe that
traditional management stylesand disciplinary techniques need some adjustments. One can gather
from reading both Kohn s and Gathercoal s works that there is quite a large amount of sense
behind that and schools really should reexamine these practices. Kohn believes that many of the
disciplinary methods used in today s schools do not create an ethical child. Kohn (2006) tells us,
By contrast, ethical sophistication consists of some blend of principles and caring, of knowing
how one ought to act and being concerned about others. Punishment does absolutely nothing to
promote either of these things (p. 29). When children are disciplined, they will only remember
that doing whatever the wrong thing was, has the effect of discipline. This will impair them later
because they may not know why the action was wrong. It will not teach them right from wrong.
Kohn (2006) also talks about coercion. The description used is, The most basic way to get what
you want from someone, assuming you have more power than he does, is just to make him do it
(Kohn, 2006, p. 22). It is argued

Good Guys Always Win Theme
Which would you do? Ruin the friendship of a young boy and girl, or lose a chance at getting a
lot of money, a cute girl, and less pain. It s a hard choice indeed, but after reviewing the
advantages and disadvantages of each, I ve decided which decision is harder to make. I believe
that the Good Guy in, Good Guys Always Win had the harder choice simply because of his
opportunities. In the script, Good Guys Always Win, the Good Guy finds the teacher s copy of
the history final in the hallway. He can either look at the questions and answers to guarantee a
good grade for him, or give it back to the teacher. In the story, three people bombard him with
great offers for the answers to that test. The cute girl offers to go to all the school dances with him
for the test, the Rich Kid offers him a lot of money to see... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Kittredge had the choice to either tell Richard s parents about the family feud and possibly ruin
their friendship, or to not tell the parents and continue to let Jenna hang out with Richard. The
decision was made when Richard s parents received a phone call from Mrs. Kettredge. Since
this story ends before we can find out what the parents think, we do not know how they reacted
to this news. Although a lot is at stake for Richard and Jenna, there is still a high possibility they
could still be friends. The family issue happened in the past, when Jenna s father borrowed
money from Richard s dad s company. Mr. Davis (Richard s father) took the blame along with
Mr. Kettredge. The two families lost a lot, but now they seemed to have moved on and improved
from the past. Also, Mrs. Kittredge does not seem to care that the kids are friends. For example,
in the text it states, I kept telling myself that Richard and Davis are common names and he couldn

Mission Statement Analysis
Mission Statement and Code of Ethics For this assignment I choose to look at two companies I
am currently working for. I have been with these companies for a few years and I have worked in
different positions within the companies. I feel I have a sense of how they are managed and can
compare my experiences with them to their goals of the mission statementsand code of ethics.
The Home Depot Mission Statement The first company is The Home Depot. After reading the

Overall they were generalized. As an employee for the company I had not seen this until just
recently when the district manager brought them to our store so I read through it and signed a
document confirming I had. I do think we live these values each day through our working habits
in the workplace but I feel the company is slacking with giving the information or expectations of
the code to the employees. If the company doesn t provide the knowledge and training really
necessary to work by the company s code of ethics then what is the point of having one?
In conclusion The Home Depot mission statement and code of ethics were relatively good and
the company does walk the talk they are giving out. With Burger King the company s mission
statement follows their main goal but I feel they are slacking with the code of ethics and not
exposing the employees to it. Overall I think both companies are good places to work and I have
enjoyed being with them and feel I m doing my part to contribute to their goals.

California s Gold Rush
Gold! Gold! Gold from the American River! shouted Samuel Brannan, a newspaper publicist
from San Francisco, following the discovery of gold in California (Rhodes 168). This event
sparked a new era of immigration to California in 1848. The gold rush began on January 24, 1848
when gold was found by James Marshall, a foreman for John Sutter, at Sutter s Mill in Coloma,
California(Bancroft 32). Initially the news was kept a secret due to the risk of a massive wave of
gold seekers interfering with Sutter s land and agricultural plans. However, by March of 1848,
Samuel Brannan s flamboyant confirmation to the rumors created the California gold rush. Hordes
of people from around the world traveled to California in search for gold and success. San
Francisco s population exponentially grew from a small settlement of about 200 residents in
1846 to a city of about 36,000 by 1852 (Johnson 12 14). As news spread, the event became known
worldwide. The gold rush in California was a vital event that became the basis for the social and
economic boom that subsequently fashioned global fame, an influx of settlers and, as a result,
the 31st addition to the union as The Golden State . California s gold rush began on March 1848.
Just two months prior, gold was discovered in Sutter s mill. The news was never meant to spread
over anywhere else but, to their dismay, the news for gold discovered was far too immense to be
kept a secret for too long. As rumors circulated then were confirmed,

The Possibility Of Overpopulation In Aldous Huxley s Brave...
The future, disputed over by many intellectuals, is an enigma. There is no certainty in what will
occur, along with no shortage of wonder in what can come about. The future, deemed any point in
time past the one humans are currently living in, is something that can only be defined by time
itself. Throughout Brave New WorldRevisited by Aldous Huxley, the author speaks on the
predictions of the future he made in his novel Brave New World , where as he seeks to justify
whether or not they were accurate or irrelevant. In Brave New World Revisited, Aldous Huxley
speaks on overpopulation in Brave New World Revisited , he acknowledges the destructive effects
overpopulation can grow to have on society, some of which are already coming about. This can be
seen happening today in the way that we individuals are wrongly convicted because one s race or
ethnicity.
Before addressing the problems which occurs Huxley speaks of it is essential to speak of what
Huxley s original prediction was in the original Brave New World , published in 1932. According
to Huxley, as the world progressed and the overpopulation issue became more and more of a
relevant issue, the future humans were going to regulate the population. According to Huxley, if
population was not controlled, the natural resources of the world would diminish at an exponential
rate. In addition to this, he argued that a Democratic form of government would be nearly
impossible to maintain for a number of reasons. Despite the

Hardin Lifeboat Ethics Essay
Although Hardin states reasonable facts against helping the poor in his essay, Lifeboat Ethics , he
overlooks key factors which would contradict with his point of view. Hardin is against the sharing
of resources because in his opinion the population growth rates of the poorer countries are much
higher as opposed to the wealthier. He claims that if resources are shared equally amongst refugees
in LEDCs, in 21 years, each American would have to share the available resources with more than
eight people. What Hardin overlooks when making this statement is that the mean wealthis tied in
with the mean birthrate. Reports today show that as the wealth of one rises, they have less
children. This is proof that as the wealth of a country rises, the birthrate would then decrease. If
this not be the case, for which there is a slight possibility, Hardin s argument may be valid.
Hardin s observation of the comparatively higher birthrate of the poor compared to the lower
birthrate of the rich is in fact correct but only to some extent. Pre industrialization in the so called,
first world countries, there were values of high birthrates. The industrialization in these MEDCs
cause a drastic decrease in fertility in the countries affected. This started in Europe, ... Show more

What Hardin oversees is that an international depository of food reserves would give the poor a
chance to develop, which would in turn spark an increase in wealth, hence, there would be a
decrease in birthrate. He also overlooks that practitioners may have ideas of using technology to
solve some of these problems. Hardin claims that farming crops for the poor would occupy
America s land, which turns to be an insignificant claim as due to the advancement in technology,
we could easily use vertical and rooftop gardening as a more compact and reasonable

Evolution Of A Evolutionary Theory
Evolution is descent with modification, a phrase Darwin used in proposing the at Earth s many
species are descendants of ancestral species that were different The power of evolution as a
unifying theory is its ability to explain and connect a vast array of observations about the living
world. Aristotle believed that life forms could be arranged on a scale of increasing complexity.
Each form of life, perfect and permanent, had its allotted space. Darwin argued that classification
should be based on evolutionary relationships Darwin used fossils, the remains or traces of
organisms from the past, to study and observe change over time. Paleontology is the study of these
fossils Darwin said that if geologic change results from slow, continuous actions rather than from
sudden events, then the Earth must be much older than what was previously thought. Lamarck
used two main principles already accepted to prove his evolutionary theory. The first was use and
disuse, the idea that parts of the body that are used extensively become larger and stronger. The
other was inheritance of acquired characteristics, which stated that an organism could pass these
modifications to its offspring. Lamarck s idea that organisms have an innate drive to become more
complex was rejected by Darwin. Darwin reasoned that over a long time, descent with modification
eventually led to the rich diversity we see today. Closely related species that are very similar due to
their common ancestor, until they

Argumentative Essay On Medea
Commonly considered one of Euripides greatest pieces, Medea is an insightful depiction of how a
woman s love for her husband, churns into a gruesome revenge scheme against him. This tragedy
illustrates a tale of a woman who challenges Greek societal norms. In the era that the story takes
place; women are often seen in submissive roles. However, the play s main character, Medea,
challenges their customs through her actions against the Kingdom of Corinth and Jason.
When Medea s husband, Jason, plans to marry Glauce, a daughter of King Creon, for wealth and
power over the kingdom, Medea becomes angry with Jason for breaking their vows of eternal
love. She decides the best way to hurt Jason was by murdering his bride to be and their own two
children. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are several points in the play where Medea could have been stopped. For instance, in the
opening scene when the Nurse lectures Medea, she should have suggested for Medea to murder
her husband and immediately flee the land. At that point, the Nurse see s Medea s children s
lives at risk and has the opportunity to save them by reverting the vengeful act onto the
perpetrator and not innocent children. However, the Nurse was unable to stop her at that time
since she only had a feeling and no confirmation on Medea s exact scheme. Another time Medea
could have been stopped is when she was making a speech to the Chorus on her revenge against
Jason and the Kingdom of Corinth. If they organized as a group, they could have turned Medea
into the Kingdom s military authority s before she acted, thus, saving everyone in the play s life.
Unfortunately, this was not accomplished because Medea persuaded the Chorus to swear not to
speak on or act against her plan. Lastly, when Aegeus, the King of Athens, finds Medea on his
return to Athens, after hearing how Jason has wronged her, he could have persuaded her not to
commit murder and to flee to Athens with him a long with her children. This would stop Medea
from committing the murders by removing her from the country, including her children, which
would prevent them from her fear of slavery or execution. If I were in the play, I would have tried
to intercept the delivery of the diadem and robe by

Essay on Response to Bitzer s Rhetorical Situation
In The Rhetorical Situation, Lloyd F. Bitzer argues that what makes a situation rhetorical is similar
to that which constitutes a moral action as he writes that, an act is moral because it is an act
performed in a situation of a certain kind; similarly, a work is rhetorical because it is a response to
a situation of a certain kind .(3) By defining the rhetorical situation in this way, Bitzer further
contends that rhetoricis a means to altering reality. (4) It is through the use of discourse that one is
capable of changing reality through thought and action. (4) Bitzer then elaborates upon the nature
of a rhetorical situation by explaining that rhetorical discourse enters a situation when: providing a
response to its state of affairs;... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although Bitzer continues in the third section of his essay, by outlining the general
characteristics or features of a rhetorical situation, it is his discussion of sophistical rhetoric that
is most interesting. (11) He notes that a sophistic situation is one where a contrived exigence is,
asserted to be real... alleged constituents are due to error or ignorance,... and [it derives] from
fantasy in which exigence, audience, and constraints may all be imaginary objects of a mind at
play . (11) He concludes that, rhetoric is distinguished from the mere craft of persuasion which,
although it is a legitimate object of scientific investigation, lacks philosophical warrant as a
practical discipline . (14) While Bitzer s insights into how one may think about the way in which
rhetorical discourse acts upon and therefore alters the reality of a situation, it is difficult to see his
point in stating that the mere craft of persuasion lacks philosophical warrant as a practical
discipline. The clearest reason it seems, is implied from the examples that Bitzer uses, none of
which are theological or religious in nature, but rather the examples he provides are usually
political. Although one is left to speculate as to what categories Bitzer would include in sophistical
rhetoric (other than a play or novel), might theological and religious discourse be subsumed under

The Use Of Control And Its Effects On People And Affect...
Politicking is the actions of using power and information to move resources towards preferred
outcomes for your fellow colleagues and/or the organization s interests. Politicking is used to
influence people and affect decisions. Locus of control is related to a person s belief on how much
influence they think they have over external events and outcomes. The higher someone s locus of
controlis, the more politicking they participate in because they believe that the more engaged,
assertive, and friendly they are to those they interact with, the more control they will have on final
decisions.
The three dimensions that should be considered before engaging in politicking are: Analyzing and
knowing your own strengths and weaknesses; Reading and understanding others verbal and
nonverbal language; and Assessing accurately the organization and its goals. Intentional
understanding of these areas will help you develop a politicking strategy to empower yourself, your
coworkers, benefiting the bottom line while accomplishing important organizational goals.
Having a clearer understanding of what politicking is and how individuals utilize these strengths
can definitely help me understand how to use politicking to my advantage in future business
interactions. I have engaged in politicking without understanding what it was that I was essentially
doing. For instance, while employed at a credit union in the headquarters office, I often befriend

Essay on Neanderthals and Homo sapiens

approximately 35 40,000 years, (Fagan 2010) from around 60,000 years ago to 25,000 years ago
when they finally went extinct (Gibbon 2001). Anthropologists are still uncertain what the cause of
their extinction was. This paper will analyze three main theories of Neanderthalextinction. The first
theory is the competition theory, which claims that the Homo sapiens and Neanderthals had to
compete for resources, ultimately leading to their demise. The second theory I will discuss is the

Upon investigating the bones Schmerling did not recognize them as a distinct species (Sawyer
et al. 2007).The first true Neanderthal was discovered in the Neander Valley, near Dusseldorf in
1856 by a group of miners who were blasting out a cave in the area. When the crew uncovered
archaic bones they contacted a local schoolteacher, Johann Karl Fuhlrott. Fuhlrott was the first to
recognize the fossils as a new species. In 1864, William King in the Quarterly Journal of Science
identified this new species as Homo neanderthalensis after the location of its unearthing (Sawyer et
al. 2007).
Dietary Differences
The diets of Homo neanderthalensis and Homo sapiens are very different. The diet of the Homo
sapiens shows how they were learning to adapt better to their environment, while the Neanderthals
were very set in how they gathered food. Studies of nitrogen preserved in the bones of Neanderthals
have shown that they consumed a substantial quantity of meat; comparable to that eaten by
contemporary wolves (Delson et. al 2006). The current interpretation of the Neanderthal diet is that
they were most likely hunters rather than scavengers (Delson et. al 2006). It was once thought that
the Neanderthal diet was comprised mainly of meat due plant life being seasonal in the cold climate
they inhabited. Evidence suggests however that the Middle East Neanderthals ... living in the

Military Rank And Inequality
Felicia Severy ANTH 484 Professor Mary Nolan Rough Draft Military Rank and Inequality
Introduction Inequality within the military is not a new concept. Gender inequality is
particularly well known and everyone is familiar with the concept of military rank; benefits
increase as rank increases. Lower ranking military service personnel receive smaller, lower
quality base houses, are expected to work longer hours, receive less BAH (Basic Allowance for
Housing) regardless of family size, and may not receive all of the support services entitled to
them. How does the rank of an enlisted member impact his or her family? Does inequality within
the ranks have an affect on morale and/or quality of life? Is rank inequality acceptable to military
families? Literature Review Inequality in the Military: An Examination of Promotion Time for
Black and White Enlisted Men (Butler 1976) asserts that black enlisted men are subject to racism
during promotion time. When all things are equal between a black and white military member,
black personnel take longer to move up in rank. Thus, black military personnel are subject to
inequality. Widening health inequalities among U.S. military retirees since 1974 (Edwards 2008)
concludes that health inequality has been widening between the years of 1974 and 2004. Military

Romantic Jealousy s Effect On Self-Esteem
Romantic Jealousy s Effect on Self Esteem
Evolutionary psychology has presented the theory that romantic jealousy, the feelings of threat or
loss to an important emotional relationship, evolved as an adaptation to protect investment
relationships (Buss, 1998; 2005). According to evolutionary theory, jealousyserves as an advantage
in mate retention and sexual reproduction for those who are able to effectively express such
feelings of romantic jealousy (Wade Walsh, 2008). Central to human social patterns, jealousy has
been shown to be a universal emotion (Buunk Hupka, 1987). Much of evolutionary theory
focuses on sex differences in the experience of romantic jealousy between males and females
(Buss, 1992; Sagarin, et al, 2003; Sagarin Guadagno, 2004), while other bodies of research
primarily focus on personality traits predisposing individuals to exhibit these jealous feelings
(Wade Walsh, 2008). Previous empirical research expands on personality theory, investigating the
effect of self esteem levels on an individual s tendency toward feelings of jealousy (Steward
Beatty, 1985), though few studies have explored the reverse direction of jealousy s potential impact
on self esteem. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

that is that after a lot of paying you tend to learn about each person so much that if you play with
them again you know the answers that they will write down one thing I thought of was that the
players themselves could think of questions that could fit into each category of the game. this
would mean there a more question in the game that haven t been answered before and therefore
not make the game less fun for people who have played it a lot. Another way would be to
introduce a rule where if a player guesses their teams answer wrong an opposing player can step
in voluntarily and take a guess at their answer. if they get it right they get to move their piece the
same amount of spaces forward as on the dice and get to start their turn there, but if they get it
wrong they have to move back half the amount of spaces. the reason I say back half the amount of
spaces is to make the reward bigger than the risk. this would give players more incentive to try

Ysleta Mission for Christianizing the Tigua Indians
Ysleta Mission
Ysleta, Texas
Mission Corpus Christi de la Ysleta, the first mission in Texas, was established by Antonio de
OtermГn and Fray Francisco de Ayeta in 1682 and was maintained by Franciscans for
christianizing the Tigua Indians. The Tigua came as refugees and captives with the former
Governor of New Mexico, Antonio de OtermГn on his retreat to the El Paso area after his
unsuccessful attempt to recover New Mexico in the winter of 1681 82 during the Pueblo Revolt.
La MisiГіn de la Ysleta del Sur, consecrated in 1682, was built by the Tigua (Tewa, Tiwa)
speaking peoples originally from Isleta and Sandia Pueblos in New Mexico. The mission was
located east of present day El Paso. The pueblo and mission were dedicated to the Tiguas patron,
St. Anthony of Padua, became the nucleus of a community that has existed for 300 years the oldest
continuously occupied settlement in Texas. Today, Ysleta Mission is on the National Registry of
Historic Places and part of the National Historic Trail system of El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro.
From northern New Mexico to West Texas
The Tigua have faced many challenges in the past three hundred years since arriving in what is
now West Texas, and Mission Ysleta was become the place of meeting and mixing of cultures.
The original mission church at Ysleta del Sur is believed to have been built of mud chinked logs
and willow reeds. Later, Tigua labor built a permanent mission from adobe by 1682. Bishop
Salpointe, of Tucson, dedicated the

The Tragedy Of The Survivor
Not many people think of death as something that can be survived. After all, death is an inescapable
aspect of life for all things on Earth. There are, however, instances where death stares one in the
face and is repelled at the last moment. Whether this avoidance is right or wrong, the outcome will
have the same, everlasting effect. The survivor will forever carry that moment with them, haunted
by the injustice done to them. Robbed of the serenity that deathmay bring from bleak scenarios, life
becomes devoid of the vibrancy it once possessed. The survivor becomes a ghostwith a physical
form, walking with the burdens of their past resting on their minds. Analyzing the events that these
people encountered with this mindset can foster a greater sense of empathy toward the survivors.
The concept of human mortality is a daunting notion that everyone has to come to terms with
eventually. This idea that the life people lead will ultimately conclude can be accepted, and is made
easier with time to digest this thought. This process though, can be taken and twisted into
something that is toxic to the mind. When someone is faced with the certainty of death and they
have come to grips with the fact that it is inescapable, it is a form of torture to take this certainty
away. What this action does is invalidate the sense of reality that has been accepted by the victim.
It takes away the feeling of euphoria that comes with the acceptance of death, the release from life s
constraints.

This market may provide quite a lot of potentials and profit for the company, but it has suffered a lot
in exploiting the market efficiently. Moreover, the closure of small retail shops, the opening of
larger shops and the closure of inefficient large shops may not only provoke increasing costs but
also makes employees afraid of losing their jobs, which creates an overall bad reputation of the
company and thus an possible reduction of sales. Another matter that should be analyzed and
improved is the supply chain. Solution to the mentioned problems The company should conduct a
consumer survey among its key/traditional/principal/loyal customers to meet their needs. It should
focus on their core competences, which is the design, manufacturing and retail of traditional
clothes, accessories and home furnishings and franchising and licensing. Thus they are able to
formulate a mission which signals a clear and straight message towards traditional design. In this
way the loyal customers but also new customers may have more trust in the product and (continue)
buying from the company, which would provoke an increase in sales. Maybe it would be wise to
outsource some of the clothing manufacturing to a subcontracting firm to save costs but to keep
control over this subcontracting firm. Furthermore, an orientation towards the traditional AND the
youth/modern market, in this way a diversification through an expansion towards a new market (the
youth market), would be

Research Study On Stanford Prison Experiment
PART A: QUESTION ONE Research Design and Method: Name the experiment or research you
have chosen: Stanford Prison Experiment Name the researcher/s involved: Phillip Zimbardo
When was the experiment conducted? 1970 s What is the Research Problem being studied?
(Step One) The research problem being studied is; how does the attitude of the administrate in a
prison effect the lives and mindset of the inmates in the prison? that the state of the social
institution of prison is due to the nature of the people who administrate it, or the nature of the
people who populate it, or both. Zimbardo, 1973, A Study of Prisoners and Guards in a
Simulated Prison, page 2 Zimbardo implies the reason there are negative attitudes in prisons is
because of the authority figures in the prison rather than the inmates themselves (although to some
extent they do play a part in the aggression). What is the Hypothesis? (Step Two) the negative
personality traits of prisoners and guards are the main cause of abusive behaviour in prison. The
hypothesis was something that Zimbardo seemed to not entirely believe himself but thought it
some extent it had to be right, given other research in the field pointed toward I being true but
more on the prisoner s side, than the guards. Describe the Research Method (Experimental
Design)? (Step Three) The research method is quite simple, Zimbardo put an ad in a newspaper
asking for male volunteers to take part in a

Hodgkin Lymphoma
Researchers are still trying to understand the etiology of Hodgkin s lymphoma.1 Researchers have
identified certain risk factors that increase the chance of getting the disease. For example,
infection with the Epstein Barr virus (EBV) increases the risk of getting Hodgkin lymphoma;
however, the overall risk of getting Hodgkin s is still small even with a previous EBV infection. It
is unclear what role EBV plays in the development of Hodgkin s lymphomasince many people are
infected with EBV each year but very few actually develop Hodgkin s lymphoma. Moreover, one in
three patients with Hodgkin s have EBV in the malignant Reed Sternberg cells, which are the cancer
cells involved in Hodgkin disease. However, others with the disease have no evidence... Show more

Hodgkin s lymphoma has unique malignant mononucleated Hodgkin and multinucleated Reed
Stemberg cells or Hodgkin/Reed Stemberg [HRS] cells, which make up a small fraction of cells
in affected lymph nodes.4 These cells are embedded in an infiltrate of reactive hematopoietic
cells. They are composed of T and B lymphocytes, plasma cells, and eosinophils and are usually
non malignant. The malignant HRS cells do not contain a phenotype that can allow it to be
assigned to a defined hematopoietic cell type; therefore, their origin has been debated. HRS
cells are mostly derived from germinal center or post GC B cells and have lost the B cell
specific gene expression program, unlike other B cell derived lymphomas where the gene cell
pattern shows the differentiation stage of the origin. It is unclear how these cells survive since
these types of cells usually undergo apoptotic cell death. Additionally, there have been a number
of molecular defects in HRS cells that have been identified. These include activation of the
transcription factors nuclear factor kapp B, members of the STAT signaling pathway, activator
protein 2, and deregulated NOTCH1 signaling.4 The deregulation of these pathways is found in
most HRS cells in nearly all cases of Hodgkin s lymphoma. This points to the relevance of these
pathways for HRS cell survival, regulation, and growth of HRS cell specific gene

Management of Sport Development
Sports development should be focused on mass participation not elite talent identification. Discuss.
Sports development is something which by definition caters for both the masses as well as elite
athletes. However after recent spending reviews more light has been thrown on the question,
which does deserve more funding and resources? In answering this question a lot of analysis has
to go in to what it is that the government want out of sport and what do they consider good results
to be. Both types of participation obviously have their own requirements financially and to a degree
both feed into each other. However where should we focus predominantly? Historically sports

British Athletic Federation, that they don t know whether to adopt a policy of sport for all or
more elite policies. Instead it would appear that governing bodies like the BAF have developed
short sighted polices which aim to balance their spending; however as a result they have directly
cut the provision of disciplines played by a large number of people, in what seems to be an
attempt to move towards elite sport. This is something that I would not endorse as cutting
programs which are engaged with seems like a decisive step away from the general aims of the
government which is to increase participation in sport. By cutting programs like cross country they
are not only contradicting themselves but showing that the public are not the main concern, also
making it forthright that governing bodies are miss using the revenue given to them by the
government by cutting programs which are played by all people. The problem with sport policy is
very apparent, being that the government are not sure who should get funding. This is primarily
because they are unable to conceptualize what it is that sport development is, as such can t

Halloween Persuasive Essay
Should We Celebrate Halloween?
Introduction: The Origin of Halloween
Halloween has become the second most anticipated holiday for children after Christmas.
Halloween was first celebrated by the Celts, who lived in Scotland and Ireland in ancient times.
The Celts held a special festival to celebrate Samhain, the god of the dead. The day they choose
was their New Year s Eve, October 31 on our calendar. They believed the souls of the dead
returned to visit their homes on this one night of the year to try to find another body to inhabit. In
nowadays many people and their kids celebrate holiday it became family tradition, therefore many
people disprove celebration of Halloween.
What does Halloween celebrate?
Although celebrating of Halloween became one of our funny holidays in which families, friends
and their kids can reveal their spirits and release their soul. Doubt about celebrating or not will
be out there, but the question is, should we celebrate Halloween? The answer is no . Halloween
gives impressive record of people who celebrate Halloween than those people who said no . As a
result of peoples lack of understanding in Halloween being a festival of death.

Constantine s Conversion To Christianity
The Conversion of Constantine
During the period of the 3rd Century (250 538) the Church faced many challenges. These
challenges helped make the Church what it is today. One of the events that the Church faced was
Constantine s birth. He was born around 274 and 288. Constantine became the Emperor of Rome
in 306. He was known for being the first Roman Emperor to convert to Christianity. Constantine
also established the city of Constantinople. He is also known as Constantine the great, Constantine I
and Saint Constantine. He gave a great deal of money to those people in need. He even gave
money to non Christians, who had no claim on him. He provided money, food and clothes to those
who had nothing. He was generous to everyone.

playing your bills . This local charity is run by numerous churches. Need help paying your bills
helps anyone regardless of their religion, race, gender or age. This is something Constantine did.
He helped others no matter what the circumstance was. This shows what a true Emperor was and
how well he followed in Jesus footsteps. In the many years Constantine was alive he did many
things with the church. Constantine helped assemble and took part in the very first meeting of the
Christian Churches. The Council of Nicaea which was held in 325 in what we know today as
Iznik, Turkey. He wished to help church leaders find common ground on some contentious aspects
of Christian doctrine. The Christian belief championed by Arius, a priest from Alexandria, Egypt,
held that Jesus, through the Son of God, was inferior to God the Father.During Constantine years of
being alive he tried to define what a Christian believed to others and tried to pursued other to
convert to Christianity. In Constantinople, During 337 Constantine came critically ill after the Feast
of Easter. He died just after the end of the Persian

The Final Stage Of Management Design
Control is the final stage of management design, making sure the specific goals and objectives
of the team is met by all those who are placed within the organization to complete specific task. It
is at this stage that all members must perform the work that is within the organizations scope of
business. Controls can be strong and visible, such as are needed in a maximum security prison, or
they can be more relaxed and invisible, such as are needed in a group of volunteers working at the
local food bank. The four steps in the process of control in the Mainstream and Multistream

This process is helpful in identifying needed changes in the input and conversion stage to maintain
quality products Mainstream managers are interested in high quality products at the lowest
productivity cost possible while maintaining good relations and organizational wealth (Nuebert
Dyck 2010). In the Multistream approach managers use a value loop which helps to identify key
performance standards. Multistream process standards are used not targets like the Mainstream
manager. The Mulitistream manager uses the information system to help enhance, process, share,
and self monitor the dada. Rather than use a Top down approach the Multisystem manager is
going to expect that other help in these processes rather than have it trickle down hill effect and
emphasizes balancing multiple forms of well being for multiple stakeholders (Nuebert Dyck 2010).
Nuebert Dyck in 2010 describe the Multistream approach to the four step control process as looking
at and establishing standards in the value chains rather than value loops. The goal is to incorporate
all stakeholders goals however much of the time they are able to foresee potential delinks and the
potential un connectivity of those chains (p556). The Mainstream focus on controlling their
employee from top to bottom, the Multistream organizations focus on creating a system that allows

  • 2. Ethnic And National Identities Of Koreans Essay Ethnic and national identities of Koreans in Kazakhstan by Yekaterina Pak On March 1 2013, in the apartment of my older brother, in small town in the north of Kazakhstan, everything was prepared for the celebration of my niece s first year birthday that Koreans usually call tol . Small low wooden table was covered with different subjects symbolizing various good wishes for our little girl s future: a spool of thread for long life, a book for knowledge, bowl of rice for prosperity, money for richness and others. My niece was wearing special Korean dress hanbok that was brought from Korea and was handed over among my relatives whenever they have their own tol . The tradition of first year birthday has been always kept in my family as a reminiscence of our ethnic belonging. Currently in Kazakhstan live about one hundred thousands ethnic Koreans whose families were deported to the Soviet Kazakhstan almost eighty years ago from the Far East. Stalin s repression politics regarding ethnic minorities who were living next to the borders has significantly transformed identities of the deported people. How do Koreans in Kazakhstan experience their ethnic and national identities in the context of multi ethnic state? Living all my life in Kazakhstan and being a third generation of ethnic Koreans living outside the place of ethnic origin, I have never questioned my identities and have never thought how important it can be. In order to investigate my own quest for identity in this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Frontier as a Place of Ethnic and Religion Conflict by... The Frontier Patricia Nelson Limerick describes the frontier as being a place of where racial tension predominately exists. In her essay, The Frontier as a Place of Ethnic and Religion Conflict, Limerick says that the frontier wasn t the place where everyone got to escape from their problems from previous locations before; instead she suggested that it was the place in which we all met. The frontier gave many the opportunities to find a better life from all over the world. But because this chance for a new life attracted millions of people from different countries across the seas, the United States experienced an influx of immigrants. Since the east was already preoccupied by settlers, the west was available to new settlement and that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The frontier became the place where many races blamed others for their problems. Such as when after the gold rush in California happened and many men started to pour in in hopes to find riches and jobs (53). But when they arrived, there were no riches, and what little jobs were available, immigrants from Asia had already taken it, such as the Chinese. This caused the men who came looking for riches and jobs to become violent. In Wyoming Gunfight: An attack on Chinatown, 1885, Hon. Huang Sih Chuen reported on how there was a group of white men who formed the Rock Springs wanted to rid the land of all Chinamen started to kill and rob Chinese men in the streets of Chinatown, and murdering others by burning them alive in buildings (46). The Rock Springs were the many people who blamed the Chinese for the lack of availability for jobs. They claimed that the Chinese are willing to work for less than the whites do; therefore no strikes can be done so that wages can be raised. However, Hon. Huang Sih Chuen states that in the beginning they joined with the whites to go into strike with whites, and yet the whites still blame them and start to murder the Chinese (46). The tension of the whites being unable to find jobs with good pay rose and caused them to act out and blame the Chinese for all of their misfortune. This lead to the irradiation of the Chinese in Chinatown and caused ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Tetra-Amelia Syndrome Tetra Amelia syndrome is a very rare disorder characterized by the absence of all four limbs. ( Tetra is the Greek word for four , and Amelia refers to the failure of an arm or leg to develop before birth.) This syndrome can also cause severe malformations of other parts of the body, including the face and head, heart, nervous system, and skeleton. The lungs are underdeveloped in many cases, which makes breathing difficult or impossible. Because children with tetra amelia syndrome have such serious medical problems, most are stillborn or die shortly after birth. Tetra Amelia syndrome has been reported in only a few families worldwide. Management of persons who survive will depend on the presence and severity of associated malformations... • 5. Why Salary Caps Are Truly Unfair The debates have gone on every sense the very first year free agency was introduced. I think after all this paper is done I truly believe that I will be able to show you evidence on why salary caps are truly unfair. So let s have some facts that prove my theory with facts from their lives. Most coaches can look at talent and see potential at such a young age. When coaches see this they push Athletes to the next level making them ready for the college. That s why you see kids pushing themselves so hard in the gym, they think they can make it to the league. Look at it this way, in all sports except baseball, the chances of going pro are less than 2%. So why pay these guys what they worked their whole entire life for get paid, they honestly deserve it. Let s look at it this way, Professional athletes have worked their entire life for everything they now have. Salary caps are not a problem in sports, this has been a very heated debate throughout every year in sports. There s new free agents every single year, with some of the potential who deserve more than 300 million dollars over the next 10 years. Then there s some who don t even come close to making 1 million on a one year deal. Many people sit here and could fire rapid shots on why salary caps should be established in sports. While others believe that this could stop some people of what they should be making. Thats besides the point, I 100% believe that salary caps should be abolished in pro sports. I have some great ... When many of these prominent Nazi soldiers were put on trial in Nuremberg, Germany, they argued they were serving their country, following orders from their superior. Here, we confront the thought provoking question of whether it is just to obey your superior or serve your nation while breaking the moral code of humanity. These Nazis committed acts and imposed punishments upon their prisoners, that many have labeled as sinister, inhumane, unjust, and gruesome. • 7. Canadian War Museum Exhibition Analysis Introduction: The Canadian War Museum provides an exhibition specifically on ways in which women lives were transiting throughout the First and Second World War. The exhibition laid many artifacts which came from women, such as photographs, voice overs, diaries, and souvenirs. The artifacts played a prominent role in understanding the experience of the World Wars from a woman point of view. The artifacts provide an understanding of the stories that women were facing challenges with. The challenges allowed women to grow and show what they are capable of. Since men were occupied fighting with their allies women took control and started participating and working. The techniques the exhibition provides the audience with used to produce a powerful identity to remind women of their capabilities. Women in the era of the World Wars have embraced their hidden techniques which the exhibition exposes, which aids in forming the exhibition s narrative. • 8. Cause And Effect Of Cocaine One of the most detrimental and addictive narcotics in the world today is cocaine. Cocaine dates back as early as 3000 BC. Ancient Incas used the coca leaves to counter the effects of living in thin mountain air. Native Peruvians in the 1500 s chewed the plant strictly for religious ceremonies. Andean Indians are believed to chew the leaves of the coca plant to increase their energy for work while decreasing their hunger and pain. It wasn t until 1859 when a German chemist Albert Niemann successfully extracted the narcotic from the coca leaf. In the 1880 s, it was freely prescribed by physicians for maladies as exhaustion, depression, and morphine addiction and was available in many patent medicines ( Cocaine), until users and doctors began to realize its dangers and side effects. While it was not fully understood at the time, cocaine has many devastating and lasting effects on the user. Today, cocaine is commonly derived from the coca plant that is most commonly grown in Columbia but also Peru and Bolivia. It is harvested and processed into a coca paste which the base of is extracted and turned into the white powder form of cocaine. Once the powder is made it is often mixed with laundry detergent, laxatives, or boric acid to cut down the potency and have more to distribute. Cocaine can be used snorting, smoking, injecting or swallowed. The United States outlawed cocaine in the early 1920 s but it wasn t until the 1970 s and middle of the 1980 s that cocaine was at ... Lawrence My Papa s Waltz by Theodore Roethke and Piano by D.H. Lawrence are two poems in which grown men recall memories of their childhood. My Papa s Waltz has a quietly sad, almost resigned tone as Roethke relives his nightly dances with his father as a young boy. Lawrence s Piano is somewhat dreamy as a man is taken back by a song to his childhood. While both are presented to us through similar personas, striking differences are apparent throughout the two poems. My Papa s Waltz is the pensive recollection of a boy s nightly waltz around the house in the arms of his father. Roethke s poem gives a voice to the often silent internal ... And yet at the end of the stanza, we are shown just how defenseless the child is as his father drags him around the room, scraping his son s ear with his belt buckle. Roethke makes the most important statement in the last line of his poem, ? waltzed me off to bed Still clinging to your shirt (479). Clinging, and all that the word implies: fear, sadness, love and admiration, is both the greatest strength and obstacle the boy will encounter in his relationship with his father. In contrast to My Papa s Waltz , D. H. Lawrence s Piano is a man s remembrance of a happy childhood. Lawrence sets a dream like tone in the first stanza of his poem as we are taken back through the years to a man s boyhood. Taken back by a song, the man is transported back to the Sundays of his childhood where he would sit beneath the piano as his mother played hymns. While melancholy, Lawrence shows us that his persona yearns for the happy childhood he once had with the line, The glamour Of childish days is upon me, my manhood is cast Down in the flood of remembrance, I weep like a child for the past (574). The author establishes a connection with readers through his use of music as a means of passage through time with the statement, In spite of myself, the insidious mastery of song Betrays me back,? • 12. Informative Speech On Factory Farming It is possible, I think, to say that a Christian agriculture is formed upon the understanding that it is sinful for people to misuse or destroy what they did not make. The creation is a unique, irreplaceable gift, therefore to be used with humility, respect, and skill Wendell Berry (Berry, The Unsettling of America: Culture and Agriculture). This quote speaks numbers to me. I believe that agriculture, both animals and plants, should be farmed with humility, respect and skill, as said by Wendell Berry. It has, however, become a concern of mine that this is not the case in large industrial farms. The purpose of my speech is to persuade my audience that there is a need for large scale production of food to feed the growing population, but there needs to be some restrictions placed on certain practices in factory farming. I first became interested in agriculture when I joined 4 H and have since learned more through farming and studying animal science here at Penn State. Even though we need factory farming, factory farming should have restrictions because Confined Animal Feeding Operations and monoculture practices are doing more harm than good. Before we get started, I want to address and define a few key terms that I will be using throughout my speech. First term I want to address is factory farming. I may also refer to this as industrial farming or industrial agriculture. According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, factory farming, or industrial agriculture is the system of chemically intensive food production developed in the decades after World War II, featuring enormous single crop farms and animal production facilities (Union of Concerned Scientists, Industrial Agriculture). The next important key term is Confined Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO). According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a Confined Animal Feeding Operation is a large operation where animals are kept and raised in confined situations (USDA, Animal Feeding Operations). The final term I want to define before starting is monoculture. According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, monoculture is the cultivation or growth of a single crop or organism especially on agriculture or forest land (Merriam Webster, monoculture). Now ... For example, it could be involving the slaughter, transportation, or shelter the livestock is housed in. The law could require a certain amount of square footage or acreage per a selected number of livestock. Next the middleman is affected. The middleman could be anyone from a grocery store owner to an owner of a store that sells things that use animal products. Usually the laws require farmers to use a more expensive route to caring for an animal thus the farmer has to raise his or her prices when selling the animal or product. The grocery store owner then would have to pay more for the animal products he is purchasing, but he would also be able to advertise depending on the product that his products were organic, antibiotic free, or free of animal testing. This could both benefit or drawback his business depending on the consumers in the area. The consumer is the final group to be affected by animal welfare acts. There are both positive and negatives to the consumer side. The positives to the consumer side is that they can take advantage of antibiotic free, organic, animal testing free and other specialized products. Great Assyrians and Egyptian Pharaohs alike wanted to ensure their absolute power in this life and the next. From art they could make sure that their image would have the best chance of surviving even after they themselves have passed away. In eras where a new ruler could change and deplete the entire region, art was a long lasting image and message that would translate and stay with the perceiver. The Furniture Plaque Carved in Relief with a Griffin in a Floral Landscape is a square plaque measuring 7.8 cm by 6.1 cm, and carved out of ivory from an elephant tusk, most likely from African elephants imported from south of Egypt (The Met.). The picture on the face of the plaque is of a griffin, an animal having the head and wings of an eagle attached to a body and hindquarters of a lion ( Griffin ). The griffin shown has sharp talons and beak with pointed eyes. Lions were repeatedly seen throughout Assyrian artwork (Ascalone). The muscular legs and abdomen paired with a strong neck and flanks gave a symbolic image of the ideal solider or army. People in this era knew how lions would have appeared face to face, untamed and never enclosed. To a people with needed protection from lions, their image represented a dominance and power. Two tenons, or pieces of wood that would have joined this artwork with another, suggest that there were more works of art surrounding it (The Met.). • 16. Traditional Management Styles And Disciplinary Techniques... If you do that again, you will be in big trouble! This is an exclamation that is heard all around the world, in many different languages. It is heard in houses, schools, play groups, and many other places. It is said by parents and teachers alike. The problem with that phrase is the consequence. Alfie Kohnand Forrest Gathercoal are two experts in classroom management. They both believe that traditional management stylesand disciplinary techniques need some adjustments. One can gather from reading both Kohn s and Gathercoal s works that there is quite a large amount of sense behind that and schools really should reexamine these practices. Kohn believes that many of the disciplinary methods used in today s schools do not create an ethical child. Kohn (2006) tells us, By contrast, ethical sophistication consists of some blend of principles and caring, of knowing how one ought to act and being concerned about others. Punishment does absolutely nothing to promote either of these things (p. 29). When children are disciplined, they will only remember that doing whatever the wrong thing was, has the effect of discipline. This will impair them later because they may not know why the action was wrong. It will not teach them right from wrong. Kohn (2006) also talks about coercion. The description used is, The most basic way to get what you want from someone, assuming you have more power than he does, is just to make him do it (Kohn, 2006, p. 22). It is argued ... This event sparked a new era of immigration to California in 1848. The gold rush began on January 24, 1848 when gold was found by James Marshall, a foreman for John Sutter, at Sutter s Mill in Coloma, California(Bancroft 32). Initially the news was kept a secret due to the risk of a massive wave of gold seekers interfering with Sutter s land and agricultural plans. However, by March of 1848, Samuel Brannan s flamboyant confirmation to the rumors created the California gold rush. Hordes of people from around the world traveled to California in search for gold and success. San Francisco s population exponentially grew from a small settlement of about 200 residents in 1846 to a city of about 36,000 by 1852 (Johnson 12 14). Hardin Lifeboat Ethics Essay Although Hardin states reasonable facts against helping the poor in his essay, Lifeboat Ethics , he overlooks key factors which would contradict with his point of view. Hardin is against the sharing of resources because in his opinion the population growth rates of the poorer countries are much higher as opposed to the wealthier. He claims that if resources are shared equally amongst refugees in LEDCs, in 21 years, each American would have to share the available resources with more than eight people. What Hardin overlooks when making this statement is that the mean wealthis tied in with the mean birthrate. Reports today show that as the wealth of one rises, they have less children. This is proof that as the wealth of a country rises, the birthrate would then decrease. If this not be the case, for which there is a slight possibility, Hardin s argument may be valid. Hardin s observation of the comparatively higher birthrate of the poor compared to the lower birthrate of the rich is in fact correct but only to some extent. • 27. Evolution Of A Evolutionary Theory Evolution is descent with modification, a phrase Darwin used in proposing the at Earth s many species are descendants of ancestral species that were different The power of evolution as a unifying theory is its ability to explain and connect a vast array of observations about the living world. Aristotle believed that life forms could be arranged on a scale of increasing complexity. Each form of life, perfect and permanent, had its allotted space. Darwin argued that classification should be based on evolutionary relationships Darwin used fossils, the remains or traces of organisms from the past, to study and observe change over time. Paleontology is the study of these fossils Darwin said that if geologic change results from slow, continuous actions rather than from sudden events, then the Earth must be much older than what was previously thought. Lamarck used two main principles already accepted to prove his evolutionary theory. The first was use and disuse, the idea that parts of the body that are used extensively become larger and stronger. The other was inheritance of acquired characteristics, which stated that an organism could pass these modifications to its offspring. Lamarck s idea that organisms have an innate drive to become more complex was rejected by Darwin. Darwin reasoned that over a long time, descent with modification eventually led to the rich diversity we see today. • 30. Essay on Response to Bitzer s Rhetorical Situation In The Rhetorical Situation, Lloyd F. Bitzer argues that what makes a situation rhetorical is similar to that which constitutes a moral action as he writes that, an act is moral because it is an act performed in a situation of a certain kind; similarly, a work is rhetorical because it is a response to a situation of a certain kind .(3) By defining the rhetorical situation in this way, Bitzer further contends that rhetoricis a means to altering reality. (4) It is through the use of discourse that one is capable of changing reality through thought and action. (4) Bitzer then elaborates upon the nature of a rhetorical situation by explaining that rhetorical discourse enters a situation when: providing a response to its state of affairs;... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although Bitzer continues in the third section of his essay, by outlining the general characteristics or features of a rhetorical situation, it is his discussion of sophistical rhetoric that is most interesting. (11) He notes that a sophistic situation is one where a contrived exigence is, asserted to be real... alleged constituents are due to error or ignorance,... and [it derives] from fantasy in which exigence, audience, and constraints may all be imaginary objects of a mind at play . (11) He concludes that, rhetoric is distinguished from the mere craft of persuasion which, although it is a legitimate object of scientific investigation, lacks philosophical warrant as a practical discipline . (14) While Bitzer s insights into how one may think about the way in which rhetorical discourse acts upon and therefore alters the reality of a situation, it is difficult to see his point in stating that the mere craft of persuasion lacks philosophical warrant as a practical discipline. The clearest reason it seems, is implied from the examples that Bitzer uses, none of which are theological or religious in nature, but rather the examples he provides are usually political. Although one is left to speculate as to what categories Bitzer would include in sophistical rhetoric (other than a play or novel), might theological and religious discourse be subsumed under ... Politicking is the actions of using power and information to move resources towards preferred outcomes for your fellow colleagues and/or the organization s interests. Upon investigating the bones Schmerling did not recognize them as a distinct species (Sawyer et al. 2007).The first true Neanderthal was discovered in the Neander Valley, near Dusseldorf in 1856 by a group of miners who were blasting out a cave in the area. When the crew uncovered archaic bones they contacted a local schoolteacher, Johann Karl Fuhlrott. Fuhlrott was the first to recognize the fossils as a new species. In 1864, William King in the Quarterly Journal of Science identified this new species as Homo neanderthalensis after the location of its unearthing (Sawyer et al. 2007). Dietary Differences The diets of Homo neanderthalensis and Homo sapiens are very different. The diet of the Homo sapiens shows how they were learning to adapt better to their environment, while the Neanderthals were very set in how they gathered food. Studies of nitrogen preserved in the bones of Neanderthals have shown that they consumed a substantial quantity of meat; comparable to that eaten by contemporary wolves (Delson et. al 2006). The current interpretation of the Neanderthal diet is that they were most likely hunters rather than scavengers (Delson et. al 2006). • 34. Military Rank And Inequality Felicia Severy ANTH 484 Professor Mary Nolan Rough Draft Military Rank and Inequality Introduction Inequality within the military is not a new concept. Gender inequality is particularly well known and everyone is familiar with the concept of military rank; benefits increase as rank increases. Lower ranking military service personnel receive smaller, lower quality base houses, are expected to work longer hours, receive less BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing) regardless of family size, and may not receive all of the support services entitled to them. How does the rank of an enlisted member impact his or her family? Does inequality within the ranks have an affect on morale and/or quality of life? Is rank inequality acceptable to military families? Literature Review Inequality in the Military: An Examination of Promotion Time for Black and White Enlisted Men (Butler 1976) asserts that black enlisted men are subject to racism during promotion time. When all things are equal between a black and white military member, black personnel take longer to move up in rank. Thus, black military personnel are subject to inequality. Widening health inequalities among U.S. military retirees since 1974 (Edwards 2008) concludes that health inequality has been widening between the years of 1974 and 2004. • 36. Romantic Jealousy s Effect On Self-Esteem Romantic Jealousy s Effect on Self Esteem Evolutionary psychology has presented the theory that romantic jealousy, the feelings of threat or loss to an important emotional relationship, evolved as an adaptation to protect investment relationships (Buss, 1998; 2005). According to evolutionary theory, jealousyserves as an advantage in mate retention and sexual reproduction for those who are able to effectively express such feelings of romantic jealousy (Wade Walsh, 2008). Central to human social patterns, jealousy has been shown to be a universal emotion (Buunk Hupka, 1987). Much of evolutionary theory focuses on sex differences in the experience of romantic jealousy between males and females (Buss, 1992; Sagarin, et al, 2003; Sagarin Guadagno, 2004), while other bodies of research primarily focus on personality traits predisposing individuals to exhibit these jealous feelings (Wade Walsh, 2008). Previous empirical research expands on personality theory, investigating the effect of self esteem levels on an individual s tendency toward feelings of jealousy (Steward Beatty, 1985), though few studies have explored the reverse direction of jealousy s potential impact on self esteem. ... There s not a lot of information about this game online or even in the instructions. it s fairly new when it comes to board games and in my opinion not very well known. Balance This was the reason I chose this game for my summative. The balance of this game is more chosen by the players than the actual game itself. The game is based off the players knowledge of each other. For example, you have teams of two people. You could either have people who ve known each other for years or people who have only just met and this would decide how well either team would do. I find this quite abstract and out of the box in terms of balancing but it can also make the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I m not one to play board games often but I do enjoy pulling this one out. it s designed with the intention of older people playing it with questions that are explicit in nature. Another great thing about this game is the replayability in one sitting. once you have ended one game, change the teams slightly and now you have a completely new game ( of course you might have learned something new about the player you are now teamed with). The game does have one flaw and that is that after a lot of paying you tend to learn about each person so much that if you play with them again you know the answers that they will write down one thing I thought of was that the players themselves could think of questions that could fit into each category of the game. this would mean there a more question in the game that haven t been answered before and therefore not make the game less fun for people who have played it a lot. Another way would be to introduce a rule where if a player guesses their teams answer wrong an opposing player can step in voluntarily and take a guess at their answer. if they get it right they get to move their piece the same amount of spaces forward as on the dice and get to start their turn there, but if they get it wrong they have to move back half the amount of spaces. the reason I say back half the amount of spaces is to make the reward bigger than the risk. this would give players more incentive to try guess rather ... • 39. The Tragedy Of The Survivor Not many people think of death as something that can be survived. After all, death is an inescapable aspect of life for all things on Earth. There are, however, instances where death stares one in the face and is repelled at the last moment. Whether this avoidance is right or wrong, the outcome will have the same, everlasting effect. The survivor will forever carry that moment with them, haunted by the injustice done to them. Robbed of the serenity that deathmay bring from bleak scenarios, life becomes devoid of the vibrancy it once possessed. The survivor becomes a ghostwith a physical form, walking with the burdens of their past resting on their minds. Analyzing the events that these people encountered with this mindset can foster a greater sense of empathy toward the survivors. The concept of human mortality is a daunting notion that everyone has to come to terms with eventually. This idea that the life people lead will ultimately conclude can be accepted, and is made easier with time to digest this thought. This process though, can be taken and twisted into something that is toxic to the mind. When someone is faced with the certainty of death and they have come to grips with the fact that it is inescapable, it is a form of torture to take this certainty away. What this action does is invalidate the sense of reality that has been accepted by the victim. It takes away the feeling of euphoria that comes with the acceptance of death, the release from life s constraints. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Moreover, the closure of small retail shops, the opening of larger shops and the closure of inefficient large shops may not only provoke increasing costs but also makes employees afraid of losing their jobs, which creates an overall bad reputation of the company and thus an possible reduction of sales. Another matter that should be analyzed and improved is the supply chain. Solution to the mentioned problems The company should conduct a consumer survey among its key/traditional/principal/loyal customers to meet their needs. It should focus on their core competences, which is the design, manufacturing and retail of traditional clothes, accessories and home furnishings and franchising and licensing. Research Study On Stanford Prison Experiment PART A: QUESTION ONE Research Design and Method: Name the experiment or research you have chosen: Stanford Prison Experiment Name the researcher/s involved: Phillip Zimbardo When was the experiment conducted? 1970 s What is the Research Problem being studied? (Step One) The research problem being studied is; how does the attitude of the administrate in a prison effect the lives and mindset of the inmates in the prison? that the state of the social institution of prison is due to the nature of the people who administrate it, or the nature of the people who populate it, or both. Zimbardo, 1973, A Study of Prisoners and Guards in a Simulated Prison, page 2 Zimbardo implies the reason there are negative attitudes in prisons is because of the authority figures in the prison rather than the inmates themselves (although to some extent they do play a part in the aggression). What is the Hypothesis? (Step Two) the negative personality traits of prisoners and guards are the main cause of abusive behaviour in prison. The hypothesis was something that Zimbardo seemed to not entirely believe himself but thought it some extent it had to be right, given other research in the field pointed toward I being true but more on the prisoner s side, than the guards. Hodgkin s lymphoma has unique malignant mononucleated Hodgkin and multinucleated Reed Stemberg cells or Hodgkin/Reed Stemberg [HRS] cells, which make up a small fraction of cells in affected lymph nodes.4 These cells are embedded in an infiltrate of reactive hematopoietic cells. They are composed of T and B lymphocytes, plasma cells, and eosinophils and are usually non malignant. The malignant HRS cells do not contain a phenotype that can allow it to be assigned to a defined hematopoietic cell type; therefore, their origin has been debated. HRS cells are mostly derived from germinal center or post GC B cells and have lost the B cell specific gene expression program, unlike other B cell derived lymphomas where the gene cell pattern shows the differentiation stage of the origin. It is unclear how these cells survive since these types of cells usually undergo apoptotic cell death. Additionally, there have been a number of molecular defects in HRS cells that have been identified. These include activation of the transcription factors nuclear factor kapp B, members of the STAT signaling pathway, activator protein 2, and deregulated NOTCH1 signaling.4 The deregulation of these pathways is found in most HRS cells in nearly all cases of Hodgkin s lymphoma. This points to the relevance of these pathways for HRS cell survival, regulation, and growth of HRS cell specific gene ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sports development is something which by definition caters for both the masses as well as elite athletes. In answering this question a lot of analysis has to go in to what it is that the government want out of sport and what do they consider good results to be. This is something that I would not endorse as cutting programs which are engaged with seems like a decisive step away from the general aims of the government which is to increase participation in sport. By cutting programs like cross country they are not only contradicting themselves but showing that the public are not the main concern, also making it forthright that governing bodies are miss using the revenue given to them by the government by cutting programs which are played by all people.
