James Simmons Sonnet For The Class Of 58
Life as the Graduates of the Class of 58
James Simmons poem Sonnet for the Class of 58 displays the conditions and society modern
men live in. The poem develops its idea by giving examples of the graduates lives in adult world
that is completely different from what they expected. As the speaker talks about how the ideal
changes into only basic things in life, his words provoke the reader to think about their lives and
compare them with their lives. The poem suggests the collapse of the ideal that young people have
as they grow older and gain more experiences about reality of life.
The argument is developed through the speaker s attitude toward his friends with realization that
life is not what they expected it to be. In the first line ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to the poem, life is not easy as the graduates and we thought it would be; there are
obstacles and finally we have to endure and live unhappy. The poem teaches us about cruelty of
real world that breaks our hopes and ideals; this cruelty is a consequence of society that people have
to compete with others. After graduation, the graduates dream big, expect to chaste their dreams
and to be successful. They also have moral principles in life and think that they will never break
their own rule, but modern life doesn t allow them to do that, and then they stuck in the unhappy
modern world as we can see in the poem. Only when they are drunk, life seem as it once seemed
(8); this is a condition of people who have to drink to be happy and forget their miserable life,
and we can see through alcohol sales that people really need to drink to gain their happiness. In
addition, ideal everybody has seems to be destroyed when they grow up, and even people who
are very successful and have power are disappointed with what they have become. This approach
can be seen in the couplet: even those who ve gained more power and sense/ feel sorry when
they feel the difference (13 14). Here the poem suggests that the society crushes their dreams and it
relates to the conditions of the society; people have to fight with energy crisis and weak currency.
Facing these problems to make a living, people are stressful and quit their expectations, and it leads
to the collapse of their ideal. Finally the graduates only want what they think they can

Concert Review
I attended this concert at CU Denver s King Center, Concert Hall. Although the architectural design
and surrounding did not attest to much artistic creativity, the actual concert was better than my
expectations. I did have lower expectations because it was presented by students instead of
professional musicians or dancers as in my last concert review. The ensemble, a collaborative
outcome from MSU Denver and other dance/cultural musicgroups from denver, was actually a mix
of African and Indian/East Asian music and dance. The two teams alternated between each other
giving the audience a great deal of contrast of movement and sound. My favorite were the second
and fifth performances, African and Indian respectively.
The second performance by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They presented a story of a goddess teasing a boy with a magical ball, then throwing it into a
pond where a monster is asleep. The boy then awakens this monster trying to reach the ball. The
story is meant to encourage people to face their fears and fight for what they want. I liked how they
used the same movements when they were describing the story before starting their performance
which they later used during the dance. For example, one of the dancers showed the same throwing
movement which she later used in the performance. The dance was accompanied by an Indian
chant like song over the speakers. It had the same simplistic nature as the African music discussed
above which I again noticed that it put the focus on the dancers. They music and movement was
much slower and calmer than the Africans, which makes sense when seen in light of the Eastern
Asian spiritual philosophy of

Snow Removal Persuasive Essay
Has your car ever skidded on the road getting out of your neighborhood because of snow build up?
Snow removal is a big issue if it does not get taken care of correctly. In Violet Township, it can take
a while for the smaller roads to get plowed, if at all. There are many reasons that snow needs to be
removed. For one, snowbuildup can be very unsafe or those who drive on it. Looking in depth at the
problem of a lack of snow removal and how it affects people, as well as going into how what the
new policy should be as well as others available and how they could be implemented.
The problem being looked at is snow removal and why it should be a public policy. The lack of
snow removal can harm those who drive on the covered roads. This is an important issue
because many people have been hurt or harmed because of lack of removal. According to Safe
Winter Roads, there are more than 116,000 injuries and over 1,300 deaths in America due to snow
and ice per year. If the snow was taken care of correctly, then the amount of injuries and deaths
would go ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This has many benefits including letting personal drivers in the community be a part of the
snow removal process. This also has the ability to delegate the problem out to other sources to
help alleviate the problem. One disadvantage to this solution is that it the cost would rise. Snow
removal is already something that takes quite a bit of money to accomplish. According to
Butcher, snow and ice removal costs are usually on the order of $150,000 to $200,000 per year.
This includes labor, fuel, and salt . To be able to hire private people to plow the small streets
would add more money to the cost. The best way to get the extra money would be to raise taxes
for the people that reside in Violet Township. Many people are not found of paying taxes, let alone
raising the cost, therefore many people may not be found of this

The Next Christendom Essay
THE NEXT CHRISTENDOM
BY PHILIP JENKINS
A SUMMARY AND RESPONSE
Kyle Sutton
Engaging Reformation and Modern Christianity CH503 XD
December 16, 2011
In the preface, Dr. Philip Jenkins clearly states his thesis for The Next Christendom, Far from being
an export of the capitalist West, a vestige of Euro American imperialism, Christianityis now rooted
in the Third World, and the religion s future lies in the global South .[1] The distinctions of global
North and global South describe the groupings of Europe, North American, and Japan (global
North) and Asia, Africa, and Latin America (global South). [2] This ten chapter book can be
divided into two major sections. In the first five chapters, Jenkins traces the historical ... Show more

This Southern church is enthusiastic, spontaneous, fundamentalist, and supernatural oriented.
Several other reasons press the shift to the South. Among these, first, Western nations have largely
developed an egregious attachment to tolerance and materialism. Second, simple population growth
is slower in the West than developing nations. This does not imply that other major religions are not
growing in the South also, the point is: Christianity is growing at an incredible rate in the Southern
hemisphere and in China and impacts the global look of Christianity.[9] If such trends continue,
Jenkins claims Christianity will inevitably become increasingly Southern in style, culture,
philosophy, and academics. So the questions remain: what will Christianity look like when it is no
longer culturally European or Western? Will it still be Christianity in its core? As the church
population explodes in developing nations and becomes more indigenous to those cultures, will
there be a conflict of orthodoxy and heresy like in the early church? Will the church become
increasingly poor, libertarian, or spiritual? [10] In the second half of the book, Jenkins responds to
these questions. In Chapter eight, Jenkins explores the turbulent possibility for horrific violence,
war and terrorism along religious lines that might accompany the rise of Southern Christianity
which is already happening and about which the western public is largely uninformed. Christian

Louisa May Alcott was a nineteenth century American author who wrote short stories, novels, and
poems. She was a feminist pioneer who believed in the rights for women. She made it clear
through her characters in Little Women which is one of her mostly known works till this day. The
novel shows women s struggle between family duty and personal growth, the danger of gender

The Graduate Movie Essay
In the film The Graduate (Mike Nichols, 1967), the focus of movie is centered on main
character Benjamin Braddock s life after college, as he aimlessly finds himself being exploited,
mis directed, seduced (figuratively and literally) and betrayed by the antagonist, Mrs. Robinson
who coincidently helps him transition from boyhood into adulthood. The central theme of
innocence and confusion are also at the forefront of the film s thematic message, where Ben is
often seen lost in his own world. The scene initially opens with a fade in shot effect from black to
blue into a close up, disembodied image of Benjamin Braddock s face that serves to highlight the
moral dilemma of film during Benjamin s drifting phase in the opening seconds of the shot. The
purpose of Nichols s use of non diegetic sounds,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, it is most prominently shown through the director s use of the leitmotif, sounds of
silence a non diegetic sound that plays continuously from shots 1 10 that underscore Ben s
unstable mental state during the first ten initial shots. Furthermore, shots 7 and 8 are just two of
four select shots that feature examples of discontinuity editing, that both reveal and highlight this
idea of confusion, as they attempt to seamlessly connect two shots under the use of a match on
action effect. In addition, it also does this by not including any sort of diegetic sounds in order
keep the audience from noticing any significant changes or breaks in the scene as it might ruin the
illusion of Ben s drifting state of mind. However, it can also be said that Nichols relies on these
instances of discontinuity in order demonstrate his own attempt to snap Ben out of his daze, and
give him a sense of direction to follow. That said, there are discerning transitional

By modern western standards, Firdaus is a criminal. She chose to kill a man, and in doing so,
sentenced herself to death. She went to school, and therefore ought to have known the
consequences of her action. In her eyes, she was not a criminal. It was impossible for a woman to be
a criminal. As Firdaus saw it, all actions of an illegal nature undertaken by women were simply
either self defense or retribution. It was always due to a man being at fault. Firdaus claims that all
men are criminals: fathers, the uncles, the husbands, the pimps, the lawyers, the doctors, the
journalists, and all men of all professions. Yet, their own society would never label them criminals.
Firdaus s father was a simple peasant farmer. He did and acted the way that simple peasant
farmers did, always have, and always would do. If this meant trading his virgin daughter for a
dowry when there was still time, then some thing is wrong. Firdaus s uncle put her through

been educated, enough to realize what was happening; however, Firdaus s uncle allowed his long
thin fingers to feel there way slowly upwards over her thighs. In any western culture, this is a

It differs from client server downloads (the standard save as protocol you see in web browsers,
for instance) in that it does not access a server and download a file that is directly stored on that
server. It differs from other peer to peer (distributed) protocols, such as the original iteration of
Napster or the newer Kazaa, by using a truly distributed means of finding the trackers.
Trackers report on who has what of a particular torrent s information and may actively maintain
torrents health. The actual torrents are small files that tell the client where to find the actual
files. People who have the actual files and are willing to allow you to download from them are
called seeds. Seeds help the growth of the torrent by spreading its information to people who are
downloading it, called leechers. Everyone beginning to download a torrent is initially a leecher.
Some trackers may cut your download off if you never seed while continuing to leech. It all
sounds complicated but is behind the scenes and very seamless, as you ll see.
An Overview of Clients To get started with torrenting, a term that s come to be used commonly and
summarizes the act of downloading and using torrents, you need a client. Clients allow the tracker
information to be processed onto your computer and generally smooth the experience by
automating many processes and managing your downloads.

Bystanders In Bullying
Alternatives
However, teachers are not the only ones helping the victims. Several research studies have looked at
the role of bystanders in bullying students. Teachers and students who witness bullying can work
together to reduce bullying in schools and classrooms. But there is also evidence that those who
were bystanders were not willing to help the victims (Espelage, Green, Polanin, 2012). Students
often do not support victims when there are multiple witnesses (Salmicalli, 2010). Students expect
someone else to intervene or ignore the victim or may consider the bullying to be a joke ( Terasahjo

The Issue of Loss Essay
Elizabeth Bishop s poem One Art deals with the issue of loss. Describing loss as an art, Bishop
depicts events, originating with common affairs such as losing a key. As the poem goes on, the
losses Bishop mentions surely grow in importance. As they gradually become more emotional,
Bishop s idea of loss as easily mastered becomes vaguely delusional. In her poem, Elizabeth Bishop
focuses the simple losses in her life in attempts to conceal the true emotionof loss.
From the simplicity of losing a door key to the heartbreak of losing a home or someone dear,
Bishop states and restates that loss isn t difficult to acquire. Loss is, in fact, a commodity in life

The art of losing isn t hard to master.
This reoccurring line at first hinted that loss is easily gained. Though, as Bishop s poem
progresses, its meaning shifts into a masquerade, as a mere coping mechanism, that Bishop uses to
convince herself of. Coping with loss morphs into state of denial at this point similar to situations
in which one promises not to cry, even though they indeed end up crying. By saying the art of
losing isn t hard to master she also contrarily prompting that the art of losing is genuinely arduous.
In the last two stanzas, Bishop targets more substantial loses, such as cities where she lived (such
as Santos, Brazil, which she inhabited for over a decade), and the loss of a lover. Focusing on the
loss of departing a city, or places with attachment, Bishop forges ahead, aiming to dilute the
emotional pain that follows loss. In the previous stanzas, Bishop has sowed and reaped the
hallucinatory thought that loss can easily be overcome.
Even losing you (the joking voice, a gesture
I love) I shan t have lied. It s evident the art of losing s not too hard to master though it may look
like (Write it!) like disaster.
The last stanza seeps with hidden emotion. By fondly commenting after you Bishop,

Analysis Of The Film There Will Be Blood
The film There Will Be Blood is a drama directed by Paul Anderson in 2007. It s widely known
for the performance of Day Lewis who plays Daniel Plainview, the cinematography, and the
screenplay. Set in the early 1900s the plot follows a wealth driven man whose goal is to take
over the oil industry with his oil drilling company. Daniel Plainview and his company surveys
land for oil and once found they offer the landowners signing bonuses and royalties to build on
their property. In the beginning, Daniel is approached by a man who claims to have a significant
amount of oil under his families grounds. From here on the film, There Will Be Blood, exhibits a
story of a road to riches that both creates and destroys the future. There Will Be Blood displays
all the elements of artistic form discussed in class. First, the plot and characters. The plot is of a
man whose mission is wealth while along the way he s met with religious problems, family issues,
and more. The writers also perfectly executed their cast of characters for the plot. For example, Eli
Sunday, played by Paul Dano. Eli gave a sense of hope and kindness in film through his religious
beliefs and goals of helping others. This was a nice contrast to the violence and greed that Daniel
and his company brought along. Another critical character to the plot was H.W., Daniel s non
biological son. H.W., played by Dillon Freasier, was an important addition to the conflicts that arise
for Daniel. Specifically, Daniel is met

Essay on An Analysis for the Play Fences
Fences An Analysis
James E. May
Averett University
History of the Theatre
TH 220 / BBA 469
Ronal Stepney
November 07, 2011
The story line seemed melodramatic throughout the play. The author (August Wilson) has laid the
ground work of many themes throughout the play. The play deals with Race, Men and their
masculinity, Morality, Dreams and hopes of everyone involved, Family, Duty, Betrayal and
Dissatisfaction. The play begins with Troy and his best friend Bono entering the yard chatting as
they usually do coming home from work as garage collectors for their company. Every Friday is
payday for Troy and Bono and one can usually find these two enjoy drinking down at Taylors (the
local watering hole). Troy seems to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Troy also deals (and is responsible for) with his brother Gabriel, who received a serious head
injury during the war and hasn t been the same since. Troy s son Cory tells his father that he has
a chance to be scouted for a recruiter from the University of North Carolina for its football team.
But since Troy feels that Cory should be concentrating on working at the local A amp;P
supermarket and his studies and leave football alone. One can understand as to maybe why Troy
feels that his son should work and focus on school instead of football. Since Troy was
disappointed because of his lack of a professional baseball career (because of his color), he did
not want to see his son receive the same kind of heartbreak he had suffered. Troy, by doing this,
he is holding his son back (whether he realizes it or not) from possibly having a better life than
what he had or currently has. Troy seems somewhat jealous of his son Cory and really bitter
when it comes to sports. One of the main themes of the play seems to come when Troy has to
tell his wife Rose (coming clean) that he is going to be a father again. Rose becomes upset and
wants to know why Troy couldn t stay in her bed instead of going elsewhere. Troy attempt to
rationalize what he has done, says that he is only trying to feel good about himself and that he

Essay On Cabernet Sauvignon
Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the world s most widely recognized red wine grape varieties. It is
grown in nearly every major wine producing country among a diverse spectrum of climates from
Canada s Okanagan Valley to Lebanon s Beqaa Valley. Cabernet Sauvignon became internationally
recognized through its prominence in Bordeaux wines where it is often blended with other red grape
varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet Franc. From France the grape spread through Europe and to
the New World wineregions where it found new homes in California and New Zealand where it
is now highly regarded as Hawks Bay s top wines. For most of the 20th century, it was the world s
most widely planted premium red wine grape, although that accolade is now held by Merlot....

In 1867 the Phylloxera plague struck Europe and almost wiped out all the vineyards in Europe.
The Carmenere vines were the most severely struck and for a very long time it was thought that
the variety was extinct. Since then Carmenere has been to difficult and too much of a risk to
replant in many places in Europe.
Far from being extinct, in recent years Carmenere has been discovered to be thriving in several
areas outside of France. In South America, mainly Chile, growers almost inadvertently preserved
the grape variety during the last 150 years, due largely to its similarity to Merlot.
Cuttings from the Carmenere grape were imported by Chilean growers from Bordeaux in France
during the 19th century. They modelled their wineries after those in France and in the 1850s
cuttings from Bordeaux, which included the Carmenere grape, were planted in the valleys around
Santiago. Thanks to Chile s minimal rainfall and moderate temperatures during the growing season
and the protection of the countries natural boundaries, growers produced healthier crops of
Carmenere and there was no spread of phylloxera, or any other decease. During most of the 20th
century Carmenere was inadvertently collected and processed together with Merlot grapes giving
Chilean Merlot markedly different properties to those of Merlot produced

Essay On Obesity Epidemic
More than one third or 78.6 million of U.S. adults are obese , according to the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention. Obesity does not only mean a bigger waist line, but also a greater
chance at developing life threating health problems. Preventable diseases such as heart disease,
type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancerare increased in individuals who are considered obese
(CDC). While physical activity plays an important role in a healthy lifestyle, what one consumes
is also a significant factor. With obesity at staggering high rates, healthy food choices should be
made more available and affordable, while the price of unhealthy food and drinks should be
increased to help bring a decline to this ongoing epidemic.
To understand the full extent of the obesity epidemic, one must first understand what the term
obese indicates. A person whose BMI, or body mass index, ranges above 30 is considered obese.
The healthy BMI range for a normal person is between 19 and 24 (CDC). When an individual
consumes more energy, or calories, than they use, the excess calories are stored in the body as fat
and thus causes weight gain. Over time, without both reduction of calorie intake and increased
activity , a larger amount of fat is stored and as a result obesity occurs (Diet and ... Show more

How Scheduled Maintenance Can Ultimately Save You Money
Keeping on top of your vehicle maintenance will cost some money. However, this investment can
pay big dividends down the road. Discover how people will know if the car has been well
maintained and the effect this will have on the value in a private sale or trade in situation at a car
dealership. We ll also outline several ways to find out what services are due on your vehicle and
how to cut costs on these important repairs.
The First Step in the Process
When you bring home that new or used vehicle the first thing you need to do is to create a
dedicated folder for it. There s a lot of paperwork associated with the purchase of an automobile
and this belongs in your folder. As time moves on you will collect receipts for motor vehicle
records, warranty repairs, completed recalls, maintenance services, parts and accessory purchases,
cleaning supplies and detail services. All of these things will go in your folder.
Very few sellers of automobiles have a rock solid organized history from the day the vehicle was
purchased, but now you will. If you sell the automobile to a private party you ll be able to instill a
level of confidence that your competition will not. Even if you decide to trade the vehicle at a
dealership they will have to consider these records into the value of the trade.

Character Analysis Of Stronger
The story of Beth Elliott s life in the movie, Stronger, is a heart wrenching tale of an incredibly
talented musician with deep seated issues of depression. The movie s title was taken from her
first hit song she wrote and recorded. Elliott s life from the very start was surrounded in music.
In the beginning of the film she is shown at the age of two, giggling and happily performing
songs she had made up to entertain her family during a long car ride. As both her parents were
musically inclined, it is no wonder she possessed such a natural talent and love for music.
Throughout the film, Elliott is portrayed as having two entirely different personas. An extrovert in

the last few years of college. Upon graduating, with determined focus and in what seems like a
brush with fate, becomes a well known and successful singer at age forty. In one scene, after an
exceptionally magnificent performance with her blues rock band, joyful emotions run high. On
stage, Elliott leads her audience to believe that her lyrics in her famous song Stronger, God I just

after courageously finding her own way after divorce. In fact, many fans repeatedly shower her
with compliments of how much this song reflects their own struggles. Suddenly, the film cuts from
bright lights and stardom to a dark and lonely room, thick with desolation. In those moments of
solitude, it is clear that she wrote these words not about her resilience, but instead encompassing
her own lifelong struggle with depression. Even through the realization of her childhood dream of
becoming a famous singer, she still has not found peace within. Whether surrounded by fans or

there were only six black players on the team. Of those six, five of them started and one of them

Even so, most coaches still considered them a lower class. Even Nate Hearne, a black coach that

Reality Check Sommers
Ngan Bui
Fourth Paper
1. Christina Hoff Sommers, The Equal Pay Day Reality Check (pp. 122 128).
Sommers does not believe that the unfair wage gap between men and women is authentic.
Sommers assumes that there are many reasons explained the gap such as women s decision on
the type of work they do, their field of study and the time distribution for their families and the
workplace. Women should not blame others for the lower pay. It is because they are less likely to
take jobs that require a lot of effort and physical ability. According to an analysis from the U.S.
Department of Labor, some reasons causing the wage gap is owing to the industry and occupation.
During her career, a woman might have to take maternal leave which partly ... Show more content

There is no surprise that men win again in the race of wage. They are men and women working
in the same field. Those statistics indicated that the one of the reasons behind the wage gap is
women s type of career is not so persuasive. There must be another explanation for the gap. The
Paycheck Fairness Act is under discussion and it is supported by the two parties. Nevertheless,
Sommers calls it is a misleading act because it will create a chaos in the American workplace.
Employers will have to settle in a lawsuit that involves discrimination and the continuing effects
of past discrimination. Sommers decides to take sides with innocent employers in this case since
they may not realize their actions are against the law. Employers will be hesitant when hiring
someone. She strongly argues that the employers are innocent and have no idea when there is a
pay gap due to past discrimination. She uses an example of universities to support her argument.
Professors in the business school will receive a higher pay than those who teach the social
subjects. The market forces are responsible for this variation. Women Association is not convinced
that it s because of the market forces, so they try to seek for evidence to prove that the pay gap is
related to past discrimination.

temperature, or an extreme natural disaster, it still tends to have an impact on the society as a
whole because of all the changes and adjustments that have to be made.
Karachi is the capital of the province of Sindh, as well as the largest and most populous metropolitan
city of Pakistan. Pakistan consists of a population of roughly 199,085,847 million as of October
15, 2015, according to the United States Census Bureau. Over the past few years there has also
been an increase in its population, it seems to be growing at a rate of 1.49% as of 2014. The
population of Karachi is not exact, however according to the world population review, there was
an estimated population of 23.7 million in 2014, the population size as of this year is yet to be
determined.
Karachi is the largest city in Pakistan located on the southeastern part of the country. It covers an
area of about 3,527 km squared and it is mostly comprised of flat or rolling plains on the western
and northern boundaries of the urban sprawl. Karachi also has a harbor situated on the south west

The Treaty Of Berlin Conference Essay
From the mid 1400s to the mid 1700s, Europe established many trade ports in Africa, but no
colonization actually took place, and the few colonies that did exist were along the coastline. In the
last half of the 19th century, this all began to change. European countries began to invade Africa s
interior. By 1870, about 10% of Africawas under European control, and in just 20 short years, this
number grew to almost 90%. Every European country wanted a slice of Africa, and this became
known as the scramble for Africa. To avoid war between the European countries, The Berlin
Conference was held from 1884 1885. This allowed the Europeans to carve Africa into colonies.
As a direct result of this, the political and economic ways of Africa were drastically changed for
many years to come.
During The Berlin Conference, the Treaty of Berlin was drafted. This document laid out the
ground work for how Africa would be divided among Europe. The conference lasted until
February 26, 1885 this was a time when the great powers of most of Western Europe argued over
setting the boundaries for how they should divide Africa . Over fourteen countries were
represented when the conference began on November 15, 1884, and by the end, Africa was
divided into about fifty countries . Otto von Bismark, chancellor of the German Empire, was in
charge of settling the subdivision of Africa between the European countries . His main goal was to

The Hebrew Bible
In the course of human history, few books have fascinated scholars to the extent of the Hebrew
Bible. This is not to say that biblical scholarship has been static. Instead, it has evolved over the
course of many centuries of scrutiny, both of preceding scholarship and the Bible itself. Scholarship
relating to the Hebrew Bible, then, is often grouped into two categories: the work of the ancient
interpreters and that of modern scholarship. Operating from two very different sets of assumptions,
there are many similarities and differences that can be found between the ways the ancient
interpreters and modern scholars read and understand the Bible. The ancient interpreters, according
to Kugel, were Jews and early Christians living and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The text clearly states that if man eats of the tree of the knowledge of good and bad, he will
instantly die. However, according to Genesis 5:5, Adam lived a total of 930 years. Ancient
interpreters viewed this not as a contradiction or error, but rather an instance which can be clarified
by using other passages (such as Psalm 90:4, which equates 1 day to 1000 years in the sight of the
Lord.) This is discussed in the book of Jubilees, an apocryphal work attributed to the ancient
interpreters. Thus, the ancient interpreters did not view Genesis 2:15 17 as contradictory or
troubling, but rather drew upon their foundational assumptions to aid their understanding of a text.
Modern scholars, however, have very a different understanding of the same text. Since the Bible
contains no cryptic meaning, the issue of Adam s death cannot be explained using other biblical
texts. This, then, must be an error which exists within the text. Modern scholars noticed something
else, however, which caused them to closely examine the language used in Genesis 1 3. The
portrayal of God in Genesis 1 differed greatly from the portrayal in Genesis 2 3. This led to another
key difference

Alcohol Bottle Rocket Analysis
This memo evaluates the quality of instructions to build an Alcohol Bottle Rocket, using terms,
ideas, and concepts from our English book. I am evaluating instructions to build an Alcohol
Bottle Rocket. Doing this I look at the things learned from reading pages 551 563, and
comparing it to the Instruction Checklist on page 572. I am analyzing whether the instructions
incorporate type of audience, purpose, subject, and an attractive design. I will also be looking at
any precautions, item lists, the layout and that it is wrote in the imperative mood, or active voice.
Most of all I will be looking at whether or not the instructions are clear and concise. The qualities
that were acceptable are explained here. The instructions address everyone, as the author includes

Why Did They Build Castles During The Middle Ages
Castles were built during the Middle Ages as fortified homes for kings and nobility. Why did
they build Castles? During the Middle Ages much of Europe was divided up between lords and

themselves, they built their homes as large castles in the center of the land they ruled. They could

castles were made of wood and timber. Later they were replaced with stone to make them stronger.

Wisteria And Symbiotic Relationships In The Bean Trees
The Bean Trees takes place in rural Pittman County, Kentucky, and other places across the USA,
during the 1980s. Its narrator, Taylor Greer, begins the story with memories concerning her
childhood and later her teenage years. As a child, she remembers watching a tractor tire blow up
and send Newt Hardbine s father flying over the top of the Standard Oil sign, and has, after that,
always been afraid of tires. Taylor s original name was Marietta Greer, but at three years old she
demanded to be called Miss Marietta, and this name eventually became Missy.
By high school, Taylor is not an special or outstanding student but stays out of trouble. In her senior
year, she has the blond, northerner Hughes Walter as her science teacher, and when he... Show more

They learn about the wisteria vines. They do not grow from barren soil; the soil beneath them is
fertilized by rhizobia, microscopic bugs with which the wisteria have a symbiotic relationship.
Taylor compares the wisteria and rhizobia to the various relationships in the novel.
Taylor calls Lou Ann, who tells her that she is now dating a man from Red Hot Mama s,
Cameron John, and she recalls how Taylor became upset when they were acting like a family. Lou
Ann insists that they are in fact a family, and Taylor agrees. Taylor and Turtle head back to Tucson
as a legally established family.
Two of the greatest influences in The Bean Treesare the Cherokee Trail of Tears, the geographical
trek that the Cherokee Nation was forced to travel when it was moved to the Oklahoma territory
from the southeastern United States, and the Sanctuary movement, designed to help Central
Americans flee oppressive governmental regimes and relocate usually secretly and illegally in the
United States. These two influences serve as the background to Kingsolver s The Bean Trees. The
Cherokee Trail of Tears informs Taylor and Turtle s journey from Oklahoma to Arizona in the
novel, and many of the novel s characters apparently are members of the Sanctuary

Many of us from any walks of life has at one point experienced an event that forever warped their
perspective of reality. Whether a nostalgic or scarring, it changes how we perceive the world in
which we live in. Unfortunately, there will be some who had witnessed an indescribable, horrible

victims can even develop PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) afterward, haunting them with

we lost our innocence by sin, the difference is that we are redeemed in Jesus Christ, knowing the

Blues Music Introductory Exercise
Procedures: (all sections consist of clearly stated sequential steps)
V.Introduction (The Launch)
Introductory Exercise
This exercise explores song elements and looks closely at the blues song format. Ask students to
bring the lyrics of a favorite song to class (reminding them beforehand what appropriate and
inappropriate choices would be). Start by discussing the lyrical parts of a song:
Verses In a song, a verse is a group of lines that constitutes a unit (similar to verses in poetry).
Typically, a song consists of several verses, and the rhyme scheme and rhythm are usually the same
from verse to verse.
Chorus A song s refrain (verse that repeats itself at given intervals throughout the song).

Illustrate this idea by watching the segment Sam Phillips in the film The Road to Memphis. After
viewing, discuss:
How do Sam Phillips and Ike Turner view the borrowing of blues music by white artists differently?
Why might Turner have been less approving of such borrowing than Phillips?
How is this borrowing different from floating verses as previously discussed?
Why might black blues artists in the 1950s not have seen white artists borrowing as a compliment?
Do cultural differences come into play when assessing appropriate and inappropriate

The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber by Ernest...
It is the mainstay of many pieces of classic American literature, especially those that fall into the
category of pulp , to have thin, cardboard cutout characters with obvious emotions and intentions
for which their only purpose is to drive the story to a predetermined end. The seductive and
dangerous femme fatale; codgerly old men; the badgering and nagging housewife, adorned with
dress and apron; and etc... These characters, and the many like them, are set into a story to play a
specific role namely as a reactor and force the protagonist in some direction. After all, what would
a hero do if there was nothing heroic to be done? Sit around? Twiddle their thumbs...? These
characters are, in some degree, necessary for the purpose of... Show more content on

well, to keep out of others. He does a commendable job of trying to help Francis forget about his
blunder against the lion, and remove strain in situations involving both Mr. and Mrs. Macomber.
He is a diplomat, though as the story will prove, not a very consistent one. He holds a lukewarm
contempt for women, especially American women, whom he deems cruel (and perhaps, once
we look at Margot, this is not without merit). He is socially introverted, and as so tries to keep
away from the personal affairs of the Macombers, but in the end fails and sleeps with Margot
Macomber after her many flirtations and a late night seduction in his tent. Wilson is strikes as a

Why Did The United States Enter World War II
World War II also known as The Holocaust / The Genocide was the world s second Great War .
World War II was much more larger in scale and more longer in duration. World War I had only
lasted for four years, while World War II had lasted for six years. I find it quite interesting that
contrary to popular belief; the United States did not enter World War II until 2 years after the
genesis of the conflict. It was only in 1941, when the Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor that the
United States had entered the war. World War II started in 1939 due to Germany performing an
unprovoked attack on Poland. Surprisingly, only a few months later after Germany invaded
Poland; the whole European continent was at war. In 1939, the United States was not ready to go
to war. In the early 20th century, the United States Army only ranked 39th in the world. Many
Americans believed that the United States could not handle another global conflict right after the
Great Depression. Although the United States was not officially part of the war at that time, that
did not stop the United States from becoming unofficially involved. When the United States did
enter the war in 1941, the Germans had already had 5 years of combat experience in Europe.
Millions of Americans served in the front, but only a few ever really saw serious combat. The
branches that had suffered the most casualties were the Army and the Marines. Many of these
troops were well trained, but even their training did not

Resident Evil 5 Representation
Resident Evil 5, which is known as Biohazard 5 in Japan, is a survival horror video game
developed and published by a digital company named Capcom (Snow, 2008: 1). The game was
released on the 5th of March in 2009. The plot of Resident Evil revolves around characters
named Chris Redfield the white middle aged male protagonist and Sheva Alomar the middle aged
female character that serves to support Chris (Snow, 2008: 1). It also revolves around their
investigation of a terrorist threat in Kijuju, which is a fictional region in Africa (Snow, 2008: 1). In
this essay, the question of how representation of the other embodies relations of power is explored
using Resident Evil5 and using Stuart Hall s theories, namely, representation, binary oppositions,
stereotypes and naturalization to conclude how representation of the other carries relations of power.

Representation is the act of portraying or depicting something (Merriam Webster s Online
Dictionary 2014)). According to Stuart Hall, it means using language to say something meaningful
about, or to present for the second time, the world meaningfully to the other people (Hall, 1997:
259). Hall further states that there is a fixed connection between power which he defines as the
ability to control people or things, that can radiate from both dominant and the dominated (Hall,
1997: 261) and representation. In conclusion, Hall s idea is that in the context of representation, the
circularity of power is critical. In Resident Evil 5, a number of things such as the African continent
and the people living in it are represented as the other from the normal western society, which
embodies relations of power in a sense that the power radiates from the normal western society
towards the subordinate other, which in this context is the African continent and its people. When

The Biased American Dream By James Truslow Adam
The Biased American Dream The American Dream is a commonly known theme among the
general population today. It states that with the right amount of work any US citizen can obtain
success in their lives. This idea was popularized around 1930 with James Truslow Adam s book
The Epic of America bringing about the idea that there is opportunity for everyone in America if
they can work hard enough.3 This idea of the American dream however began much earlier than
the 20th century. Rather it began in the west in the 1800s as US citizens gained the ability to cross
the frontier and begin completely new lives, whether those lives became advantageous or not.
According to the American Dream the western settler s level of work, not race or gender, would
determine whether or not he or she became successful. However this was not the case. The
American Dream of the 19th century is disparate from the one known today. Unlike Adam s
American Dream of the 1930s, this western American Dream was heavily skewed towards white
male, US citizen obtainment. This was because the main drive of the western frontier was for white
male US citizens to profit from the newly obtained land and keep it for themselves thus fulfilling
their new American Dream. In the mid19th century, economic opportunities existed in the Western
Frontier of America, allowing people to go and accomplish their dreams if they had the motivation,
but those opportunities were prohibitive for women, nonwhites, or non US

Record Stigmas
There is no doubt that there is a serious stigma attached to an individual with a record. A record
could be as minor as a one time arrest where the charges are dropped, or as serious as a felony.
Even though individuals may have paid their debts they are still labeled and their record, no
matter how minor, follows them around for life. This poses an issue for many people. Many
employers state that they would not hire an application with a criminal record. Just like any other
social issue, there are some solutions that could ease the burden on these individuals who are being
stigmatized. The biggest thing that can be done is to talk about the issue. The more open a personis

Where The Red Fern Grows Characters

humans have different appearances no matter how small, just like all dogs. In addition, every

Dan and Little Ann are two redbone coonhound characters in the novel, Where the Red Fern
Grows by Wilson Rawls, that have different appearances and methods of dealing with conflict.
However, they both have similar personalities. First of all, Dan and Ann have very different
methods of handling conflict. Old Dan does not think much before he goes into action. Billy
announces, It was the voice of Old Dan ... In some way he had gotten into that old muskrat den

one specific hound. Billy announces, [Old Dan] would not hunt with another hound, other than
Little Ann ... he would not hunt, even with me, unless Little Ann was with him (102). Old Dan
again shows that he is loyal because he does not hunt by himself with Billy or with other hounds.
Similarly, Little Ann left to help Old Dan. The author composes, There, scratched deep in the soft
leaves were two little beds. One was smaller than the other (93). Ann left the doghouse and went
to aid Dan s effort in keeping the coon in the big tree. They slept together in beds they made all

Sociological Perspectives on the Family
Sociological Perspectives on the Family SOC101: Introduction to Sociology Instructor: Jeanette
Maxey August 15, 2011 Sociological Perspectives on the Family In the field of sociology, there
are numerous approaches sociologists reflect on when studying humankind s behavior.
Sociologists argue that no single theory is correct by itself; but to a certain extent, they draw on
all of them for various purposes. Sociologists vision the social world in diverse ways, meaning
seeing the world as stable and a continuing entity. Those who have this view contend they are
impressed with the endurance of social institutions such as family. Family is one of the most

Thus, the individual is produced by society. From the functionalist perspective, one could
conclude that the individual s perspective is shaped by understanding their role, function and
responsibility within the family unit. Unity and progress are achieved when each individual
understands, commits, accepts responsibility and is accountable in their role. Discord and chaos
are achieved when even one member does not understand, will not commit or refuses to accept
and function within their role. For example, a father would be expected to be one who must
provide and protect his family. This is based on standards of expectations of what fathers are
supposed to do and what fatherhood means in the given society of which they belong. Individuals
who adhere to functionalism would be rooted in their functions, roles, and expectations that are
expected of them. Social Change Functionalists believe societal change is predictable and
positive (Vissing, 2011). Social change within the family is planned for and expected. Social
change and interaction within the family is hoped for as a child grows. A toddler learns to walk;
children learn to dress themselves; and teens begin choosing their own music and style of dress. By
graduation they are almost autonomous. As long as children and parents agree with the roles they
are expected to fill, the family can

Coal Mining
Coal mining is not only a dangerous job, but also life threatening and deadly. Many accidents

Even though today fifty percent of our electricity is powered by coal. There are four different
types of coalmines, each very different. The first type are drift or slope mines, they are driven into
valley walls near seams of coal. The second types of mines are shaft mines, these types of mines
use pumps to remove water. Boreholes are drilled to relieve water pressure for safer mining. The
third types of mines are surface mines. Surface mines use draglines, which can remove up to 200ft

miner is $903.76 and about $39,067.60 per year. You can surface mine on both mountains and
plains. Coal is a fossil fuel, because it was formed from the remains of vegetation that grew as
long as 400 million years ago. A fossil fuel is a naturally occurring fuel of organic nature, such as
coal, crude oil and natural gases. It is often referred to as buried sunshine because the plants which
formed coal captured energy from the sun through photosynthesis to create the compounds that
makes up plant tissue. Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants convert light to energy
by transforming carbon dioxide and water into carbon hydrates. There are about 267 billion tons
or, thirteen percent, of known American reserves in the United States. The most important
element in the plant material is carbon, which gives coal most of its energy. Most of the coal

As plants and trees died, their remains sank to the bottom of the swampy areas, accumulating layer

  • 2. James Simmons Sonnet For The Class Of 58 Life as the Graduates of the Class of 58 James Simmons poem Sonnet for the Class of 58 displays the conditions and society modern men live in. The poem develops its idea by giving examples of the graduates lives in adult world that is completely different from what they expected. As the speaker talks about how the ideal changes into only basic things in life, his words provoke the reader to think about their lives and compare them with their lives. The poem suggests the collapse of the ideal that young people have as they grow older and gain more experiences about reality of life. The argument is developed through the speaker s attitude toward his friends with realization that life is not what they expected it to be. In the first line ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to the poem, life is not easy as the graduates and we thought it would be; there are obstacles and finally we have to endure and live unhappy. The poem teaches us about cruelty of real world that breaks our hopes and ideals; this cruelty is a consequence of society that people have to compete with others. After graduation, the graduates dream big, expect to chaste their dreams and to be successful. They also have moral principles in life and think that they will never break their own rule, but modern life doesn t allow them to do that, and then they stuck in the unhappy modern world as we can see in the poem. Only when they are drunk, life seem as it once seemed (8); this is a condition of people who have to drink to be happy and forget their miserable life, and we can see through alcohol sales that people really need to drink to gain their happiness. In addition, ideal everybody has seems to be destroyed when they grow up, and even people who are very successful and have power are disappointed with what they have become. This approach can be seen in the couplet: even those who ve gained more power and sense/ feel sorry when they feel the difference (13 14). Here the poem suggests that the society crushes their dreams and it relates to the conditions of the society; people have to fight with energy crisis and weak currency. Facing these problems to make a living, people are stressful and quit their expectations, and it leads to the collapse of their ideal. Finally the graduates only want what they think they can ... • 3. Concert Review I attended this concert at CU Denver s King Center, Concert Hall. Although the architectural design and surrounding did not attest to much artistic creativity, the actual concert was better than my expectations. I did have lower expectations because it was presented by students instead of professional musicians or dancers as in my last concert review. The ensemble, a collaborative outcome from MSU Denver and other dance/cultural musicgroups from denver, was actually a mix of African and Indian/East Asian music and dance. The two teams alternated between each other giving the audience a great deal of contrast of movement and sound. My favorite were the second and fifth performances, African and Indian respectively. The second performance by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They presented a story of a goddess teasing a boy with a magical ball, then throwing it into a pond where a monster is asleep. The boy then awakens this monster trying to reach the ball. The story is meant to encourage people to face their fears and fight for what they want. I liked how they used the same movements when they were describing the story before starting their performance which they later used during the dance. For example, one of the dancers showed the same throwing movement which she later used in the performance. The dance was accompanied by an Indian chant like song over the speakers. It had the same simplistic nature as the African music discussed above which I again noticed that it put the focus on the dancers. They music and movement was much slower and calmer than the Africans, which makes sense when seen in light of the Eastern Asian spiritual philosophy of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Snow Removal Persuasive Essay Has your car ever skidded on the road getting out of your neighborhood because of snow build up? Snow removal is a big issue if it does not get taken care of correctly. In Violet Township, it can take a while for the smaller roads to get plowed, if at all. There are many reasons that snow needs to be removed. For one, snowbuildup can be very unsafe or those who drive on it. Looking in depth at the problem of a lack of snow removal and how it affects people, as well as going into how what the new policy should be as well as others available and how they could be implemented. The problem being looked at is snow removal and why it should be a public policy. The lack of snow removal can harm those who drive on the covered roads. This is an important issue because many people have been hurt or harmed because of lack of removal. According to Safe Winter Roads, there are more than 116,000 injuries and over 1,300 deaths in America due to snow and ice per year. If the snow was taken care of correctly, then the amount of injuries and deaths would go ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This has many benefits including letting personal drivers in the community be a part of the snow removal process. This also has the ability to delegate the problem out to other sources to help alleviate the problem. One disadvantage to this solution is that it the cost would rise. Snow removal is already something that takes quite a bit of money to accomplish. According to Butcher, snow and ice removal costs are usually on the order of $150,000 to $200,000 per year. This includes labor, fuel, and salt . To be able to hire private people to plow the small streets would add more money to the cost. The best way to get the extra money would be to raise taxes for the people that reside in Violet Township. Many people are not found of paying taxes, let alone raising the cost, therefore many people may not be found of this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Next Christendom Essay THE NEXT CHRISTENDOM BY PHILIP JENKINS A SUMMARY AND RESPONSE Kyle Sutton Engaging Reformation and Modern Christianity CH503 XD December 16, 2011 In the preface, Dr. Philip Jenkins clearly states his thesis for The Next Christendom, Far from being an export of the capitalist West, a vestige of Euro American imperialism, Christianityis now rooted in the Third World, and the religion s future lies in the global South .[1] The distinctions of global North and global South describe the groupings of Europe, North American, and Japan (global North) and Asia, Africa, and Latin America (global South). This Southern church is enthusiastic, spontaneous, fundamentalist, and supernatural oriented. Several other reasons press the shift to the South. Among these, first, Western nations have largely developed an egregious attachment to tolerance and materialism. Second, simple population growth is slower in the West than developing nations. This does not imply that other major religions are not growing in the South also, the point is: Christianity is growing at an incredible rate in the Southern hemisphere and in China and impacts the global look of Christianity.[9] If such trends continue, Jenkins claims Christianity will inevitably become increasingly Southern in style, culture, philosophy, and academics. So the questions remain: what will Christianity look like when it is no longer culturally European or Western? Will it still be Christianity in its core? As the church population explodes in developing nations and becomes more indigenous to those cultures, will there be a conflict of orthodoxy and heresy like in the early church? Will the church become increasingly poor, libertarian, or spiritual? [10] In the second half of the book, Jenkins responds to these questions. In Chapter eight, Jenkins explores the turbulent possibility for horrific violence, war and terrorism along religious lines that might accompany the rise of Southern Christianity which is already happening and about which the western public is largely uninformed. The Graduate Movie Essay In the film The Graduate (Mike Nichols, 1967), the focus of movie is centered on main character Benjamin Braddock s life after college, as he aimlessly finds himself being exploited, mis directed, seduced (figuratively and literally) and betrayed by the antagonist, Mrs. Robinson who coincidently helps him transition from boyhood into adulthood. The central theme of innocence and confusion are also at the forefront of the film s thematic message, where Ben is often seen lost in his own world. In addition, it also does this by not including any sort of diegetic sounds in order keep the audience from noticing any significant changes or breaks in the scene as it might ruin the illusion of Ben s drifting state of mind. As the poem goes on, the losses Bishop mentions surely grow in importance. As they gradually become more emotional, Bishop s idea of loss as easily mastered becomes vaguely delusional. In her poem, Elizabeth Bishop focuses the simple losses in her life in attempts to conceal the true emotionof loss. From the simplicity of losing a door key to the heartbreak of losing a home or someone dear, Bishop states and restates that loss isn t difficult to acquire. Though, as Bishop s poem progresses, its meaning shifts into a masquerade, as a mere coping mechanism, that Bishop uses to convince herself of. • 15. Analysis Of The Film There Will Be Blood The film There Will Be Blood is a drama directed by Paul Anderson in 2007. It s widely known for the performance of Day Lewis who plays Daniel Plainview, the cinematography, and the screenplay. Set in the early 1900s the plot follows a wealth driven man whose goal is to take over the oil industry with his oil drilling company. Daniel Plainview and his company surveys land for oil and once found they offer the landowners signing bonuses and royalties to build on their property. In the beginning, Daniel is approached by a man who claims to have a significant amount of oil under his families grounds. From here on the film, There Will Be Blood, exhibits a story of a road to riches that both creates and destroys the future. There Will Be Blood displays all the elements of artistic form discussed in class. First, the plot and characters. The plot is of a man whose mission is wealth while along the way he s met with religious problems, family issues, and more. The writers also perfectly executed their cast of characters for the plot. For example, Eli Sunday, played by Paul Dano. Eli gave a sense of hope and kindness in film through his religious beliefs and goals of helping others. This was a nice contrast to the violence and greed that Daniel and his company brought along. Another critical character to the plot was H.W., Daniel s non biological son. H.W., played by Dillon Freasier, was an important addition to the conflicts that arise for Daniel. Specifically, Daniel is met ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The black players at Permian were usually regarded as the best on the field. Even so, most coaches still considered them a lower class. Even Nate Hearne, a black coach that usually dealt with the black players, described Boobie as just another dumb nigger if he couldn t carry a football under his arm (18). The racism wasn t just within the town and the team, it was affected other teams Permian played. When it came time to play the Carter Cowboys in the quarterfinals, a meeting had to be set up to discuss the terms of the game. This was mostly due to racism since over 90% of the Carter school was African American. The Permian coaches argued over where the game would be held. A neutral location was chosen for the safety of the fans. After the final pass of the game, player Clint Duncan knew it was incomplete when he looked up and saw a bunch of cocky niggers jumping up and down (334). Sommers does not believe that the unfair wage gap between men and women is authentic. Sommers assumes that there are many reasons explained the gap such as women s decision on the type of work they do, their field of study and the time distribution for their families and the workplace. Women should not blame others for the lower pay. It is because they are less likely to take jobs that require a lot of effort and physical ability. According to an analysis from the U.S. Department of Labor, some reasons causing the wage gap is owing to the industry and occupation. They are men and women working in the same field. Those statistics indicated that the one of the reasons behind the wage gap is women s type of career is not so persuasive. There must be another explanation for the gap. The Paycheck Fairness Act is under discussion and it is supported by the two parties. Nevertheless, Sommers calls it is a misleading act because it will create a chaos in the American workplace. Employers will have to settle in a lawsuit that involves discrimination and the continuing effects of past discrimination. Sommers decides to take sides with innocent employers in this case since they may not realize their actions are against the law. Employers will be hesitant when hiring someone. She strongly argues that the employers are innocent and have no idea when there is a pay gap due to past discrimination. She uses an example of universities to support her argument. Professors in the business school will receive a higher pay than those who teach the social subjects. The market forces are responsible for this variation. Women Association is not convinced that it s because of the market forces, so they try to seek for evidence to prove that the pay gap is related to past discrimination. The Treaty Of Berlin Conference Essay From the mid 1400s to the mid 1700s, Europe established many trade ports in Africa, but no colonization actually took place, and the few colonies that did exist were along the coastline. In the last half of the 19th century, this all began to change. European countries began to invade Africa s interior. By 1870, about 10% of Africawas under European control, and in just 20 short years, this number grew to almost 90%. Every European country wanted a slice of Africa, and this became known as the scramble for Africa. To avoid war between the European countries, The Berlin Conference was held from 1884 1885. This allowed the Europeans to carve Africa into colonies. As a direct result of this, the political and economic ways of Africa were drastically changed for many years to come. During The Berlin Conference, the Treaty of Berlin was drafted. This document laid out the ground work for how Africa would be divided among Europe. The conference lasted until February 26, 1885 this was a time when the great powers of most of Western Europe argued over setting the boundaries for how they should divide Africa . Over fourteen countries were represented when the conference began on November 15, 1884, and by the end, Africa was divided into about fifty countries . Instead, it has evolved over the course of many centuries of scrutiny, both of preceding scholarship and the Bible itself. Scholarship relating to the Hebrew Bible, then, is often grouped into two categories: the work of the ancient interpreters and that of modern scholarship. Operating from two very different sets of assumptions, there are many similarities and differences that can be found between the ways the ancient interpreters and modern scholars read and understand the Bible. The ancient interpreters, according to Kugel, were Jews and early Christians living and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The text clearly states that if man eats of the tree of the knowledge of good and bad, he will instantly die. However, according to Genesis 5:5, Adam lived a total of 930 years. Ancient interpreters viewed this not as a contradiction or error, but rather an instance which can be clarified by using other passages (such as Psalm 90:4, which equates 1 day to 1000 years in the sight of the Lord.) This is discussed in the book of Jubilees, an apocryphal work attributed to the ancient interpreters. Thus, the ancient interpreters did not view Genesis 2:15 17 as contradictory or troubling, but rather drew upon their foundational assumptions to aid their understanding of a text. Modern scholars, however, have very a different understanding of the same text. Since the Bible contains no cryptic meaning, the issue of Adam s death cannot be explained using other biblical texts. This, then, must be an error which exists within the text. Modern scholars noticed something else, however, which caused them to closely examine the language used in Genesis 1 3. The portrayal of God in Genesis 1 differed greatly from the portrayal in Genesis 2 3. This led to another key difference ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In conclusion, Hall s idea is that in the context of representation, the circularity of power is critical. In Resident Evil 5, a number of things such as the African continent and the people living in it are represented as the other from the normal western society, which embodies relations of power in a sense that the power radiates from the normal western society towards the subordinate other, which in this context is the African continent and its people.
