Analysis Of One Art By Elizabeth Bishop
One Art Poetry Analysis
One art is poem written by Elizabeth Bishop discussing loss and the role it plays in the world. The
poem conveys a powerful message subtly hidden in the speaker s use of connotation and denotation.
In addition to the multiple connotations of loss in the poem, repetition and sound coupled together
add meaning overall to the poem. The form of the poem contributes to the uses of repetition and
connotation to emphasize the ease of loss.
In the poem as seen throughout much of it the speaker uses sound and repetition heavily through
the length of the poem. The poem itself is a mirror into the author, Elizabeth Bishop s, life and
losses she s collected throughout her lifetime. Upon research into Bishop the poem can easily be
seen as a autobiographical piece. In the poem the speaker confesses to losing two cities, lovely
ones Bishop lost her husband to suicide some years prior to having written the poem. Many of the
losses described in the poem are personal anecdotes straight from Bishops life. The poem casually
denotes the losses experienced in Bishops life creating a casual and ironic tone throughout the
length of the poem.
Specifically the poem is a villanelle, a 19 line poem with two rhymes throughput the poem
consisting of five tercets and a quatrain. In One Art the repeating lines are The art of losing isn t
hard to master and Disaster , the end of every stanza in the poem the stanza ends with either of the
two. In every the poem builds upon

Reason In The Most Dangerous Game By General Zaroff
Reason or Instinct? Instinct is no match for reason This is true according to general Zaroff, but
does the author of the story agree? Yes, the author of The Most Dangerous Game believes that
reason is no match for instinct. Throughout the story he gives examples of how reason has out
smarted instinct. Reason is the explanation or justification of a certain action or event;the reason is
not affected by force of habit. It is a process of very analytical thinking. Instinct, instinct is action
woven into your mind for long periods of time; it is a second nature for you. For example a
professional basketball player following through after your shot, they do not have to think about
what they are doing they just do it. Instinct is done by a force of habit, you do not think of instinct;
it just comes naturally.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
... he stopped before he has swum 50 feet. A certain coolheadedness had come to him; it was not
the 1st time he had been in a tight place (20, 21). This example is just after Rainsford fell off of
the yacht. His initial instinct was to pursue after the boat, Rainsford tries but fails. He then
depends on long term reasoning to grab hold of the situation and lead himself back to safety.
Instead, If this man s reasoning did not come into play he most likely would have lost his energy
and not have the capability of finding shipwreck island and drown. This is one example of many in
the story when using reason instead of instinct kept the main character safe and alive, his instinct

Impact Of Advertising On Advertiser s Advertising Essay
Advertising has many different forms of writing in its field. There are three major characteristics
that impact advertiser s advertising methods. First, some advertiser s might say a big impact would
be getting the advertiser s customer s product to the companies target market. The second one might
be how to inform the audience of the product and what media vehicles to use to make sure the
target gets the advertisement. The third one is creating the final advertisement. In these three tasks
advertisers have to write and reach their customers target audience with the new or improved
product, to write to the media vehicle the advertisingcompany wants to use to reach a market, and
to write the advertisement itself. Overall, advertisers and advertising companies help firms or
companies get a product to an audience. In one part of an ad agency a group of employees are
working on finding the target market, the people who will invest in the product. Then there is a
group of people that work on talking to the company about what the company wants the ad
agency to get across. There are also people who make the advertisement and people who pick the
media vehicle to reach the audience. Media vehicle examples are: television networks or channels,
newspapers, magazines, billboards, and internet. Once all of their factors are decided the ad agency
puts them all together to make a cohesive advertisement that is cost affective and will reach
majority of the target market. Advertisers

The Department Of Veterans Affairs
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is a health care system that offers programs to benefit
veterans and their families. Benefits include, but are not limited compensation payments for
disabilities or death related to military service, pensions, education, health care and rehabilitation.
The Department of Veteran Affairs functions as the nation s largest integrated health care system,
with more than 1,700 hospitals, clinics, community living centers, domiciliary, readjustment
counseling centers, and other facilities. The mission of the VA is to care for him who shall have
borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan by serving and honoring the men and women
who are America s veterans (The Department of Veteran Affairs, 2011). This mission statement is
based off of President Lincoln s promise to service members. For the addiction treatment program
(ATP), which is part of the mental health division of the VA, their mission statement is to provide
person centered and driven assessments, clinical programming, plan of care, treatment plan reviews,
transition planning and outpatient and after service to promote the rehabilitation, recovery, health
maintenance, quality of life and community integration goals identified by persons served (The
Department of Veteran Affairs, 2011, p. 27). The core mission of the VA s mental health department

Ender s Game and the Matrix
In a comparative study of texts we see that the connections between texts are realised through the
different textual forms used by each composer.
How accurate is this statement for the pair of texts you have studied in this unit? In your answer
you may like to discuss some or all of the following: form, structure, language features, context,
information ideas.
When texts are considered together, responders realise that texts are connected through their similar
themes and ideas displayed in their textual forms. Texts are allegories of human existence which
simultaneously examining contextual ideas. This is seen the two texts, the Wachowski brothersfilm

This idea is represented in the matrix by The Desert of the Real and the motifs of mirrors
throughout the movie. The reflections represent the confusion toward the blurred line between
reality and simulation. Similarly, this idea of the blurred line between reality and simulation is
reflected with Cypher s conversation with Agent Smith. A firm believer in the theory ignorance is
bliss , Cypher prefers the happier simulated life to the truth facing him. By emphasising this
simulated environment, the Wachowski brothers allow us to analyse our own dependency on
technology for our lives. Similarly, Card analyses this idea of human kind living in a simulacra in
his novel Ender s game. Not knowing the truth, Ender is deceived by his military superiors into
believing that the real battle against the buggers was simply a computer game. Real. Not a game.
After this sudden revelation, Ender cannot cope with his existence, and only finds redemption in
religion. In both texts, the composers use textual forms to highlight the idea that computers are
used to create a simulation which absorbs the user, hiding them from the realities of life.
Similarly, both texts use defamiliarisation to give representations on gender. The futuristic shifts are
used to reflect contextual shifts in gender paradigms. In The Matrix, this is apparent through all the
androgynous characters, such as Trinity, Switch and to some

The Economic Boom of the 1920 s Essay
The Economic Boom of the 1920s
After the First World War America was a completely different country. The twenties was a very
unusual time period in American History. The twenties were a time of fun and partying. There are
many reasons why it was called the Roaring Twenties.
Most of the American people were living a great life and were able to afford luxury items, even
though this didn t apply to every one many believed that it was excellent and exciting a time of
great hopes.
In the twenties, industry took a very big step. It nearly doubled. Not only did industry grow so did
science, fads, laws, beliefs, arts, social lives changed, sports and the various different news from

Over 23 million cars were made.
Other scientific things that were invented at the time was freezing to preserve foods, car
companies for example Ford and Chrysler, dry roll film and portable cameras.
There were many reasons for the boom they were: Mass production: Factories around the USA
could use electricity and set up assembly lines and make objects quickly. The cars were made
identical to make them easier to make and so they are cheaper.
America was being paid back loaned that it had lent other countries during the war, on top of this
they were making interest. The banks now had lots of money to lend to people setting up a
business or for people to buy on the margin.
Taxation was kept low and businesses and companies able to keep much of the profit to invest in
new efficient factories that produced goods at a cheaper price.
Advertising also played a part in the boom, these convinced people to buy their items. They
exaggerated. Advertising took place on the Posters, radio newspapers, magazines and cinema, they
encouraged people to buy more and more, and the families had many more items than the rest of
the world. When something new had come along every one had to buy it. It was like competitions
between the Americans To see who could get the better things. Hire purchase was also introduced
to enable people to have consumer goods straight away. It leads to higher

Blackie The Mixer
Have you ever heard of a story told by a dog? The Mixer, written by P.G Wodehouse, is a cute and
funny story about a dog that is adopted by a robber. Blackie, the narrator/main character, is a dog
that misinterprets anything and unexpectedly saves his new family from the robber. As a result
of Blackie s distinct character traits, he doesn t understand certain events which makes him a
unreliable narrator. However, these same traits make him a believable dog. Blackie has a very
oblivious personality. For example, on page 77 of the book is says I looked at the man with a
great deal of respect. He was evidently someone important, if they worried so much about his
health. However, when you look at the sentence before that, the policeman says to the man, They
told me to tell you you needed a change of air. See? This proves that the man had most likely had
been causing trouble and needed a change of air or in other words, moving out of their town. This
means Blackie thought the policeman worried about the man s health, not that the man was causing
trouble.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Tribute to the Dog, by George Graham Vest, his main point is that dog s are very loyal to
people and will trust them. For example, on page 94 it says, The one absolutely unselfish friend
that a man could have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never
proves ungrateful or treacherous is his dog. This means that Blackie, from The Mixer, is obedient
to his owner. Because of Blackie s oblivious personality, he does not know that the man is not a
good person. However, he is loyal and obedient because in Tribute to the Dog, he states that dogs

Role Strain In Nursing
Nursing can be a very stressful profession. We witness situations that even Hollywood cannot
replicate while attempting to keep a professional attitude. We are called to move quicker than a
squirrel collecting acorns and think faster than the latest iOS for the iPhone without forgetting the
cup of water for the visitor or the 5th warm blanket for your freezing patient. Learning to cope with
the constant stress can be difficult. Blais and Hayes (2016) suggests that there are several methods
to utilize that can assist in dealing with stressful situations for nurses. Priority setting, improving
personal self and positive thoughts are a few their strategies.

Scopes Trial Essay
The twentieth century Scopes trial may have started out as a simple debate between evolutionists
and creationists, but quickly escalated to a debate of historic proportions. The 1920s were times of
change in the United States, from women getting the right to vote to prohibition to changes in
education, such as the Butler Act, which created unease and animosity throughout the country. The
Butler Act of 1925 prohibited the teaching of evolutionand any other theories that deny the story of
the divine creation of man as taught in the Bible in all Universities and public schools in
Tennessee. John Scopes, a high school biology teacher in Dayton, Tennessee decided to test this

Giving students freedom in their academic lives encouraged students to form their own opinions.
Teachers had biased feelings towards those who denied students the right to the whole truth because
of specific religions, because it raises an uneducated generation. Fundamentalists needed to realize
that as times changed9 modernization of education is necessary, regardless of religious beliefs so
students receive the full truth and become liberated people. If students are restricted from certain
topics and are only taught one view on a few subjects then there will be no new or different ways of
thinking, rendering education pointless. Without freedom in the intellectual life, and without the
inspiration of uncensored discovery and discussion, there could ultimately be no scholarship, no
schools at all and no education. The American Federation of Teachers expressed their fear for the
future of education and how it would be constrained due to traditionalism, in contradiction of
Sparks and other creationists. Dudley Field Malone, an attorney on the defense team for the Scopes
trial, argued for the importance of teaching science and religion to fully educate the students and
allow them to form their own opinions and ideas. Malone made the point that the old generation
owes the new generation all the facts and theories acquired by learning, studying, and observing so
they have the opportunity to enhance and better the generations

Organismal Biology
Organismal biology is the study of structure, function, ecology, and evolution at the level of the
organism. An understanding of the biology of animals and plants allows for a better prediction of
impacts on these organisms from human activity. Having a biological understanding of these
organisms also allows for better conservation practices. Organismal biology will allow me to have
in depth knowledge of speciesbehavior, physiology, and evolutionary history, which is essential
information when making management and conservation plans for specific species. Understanding

The Growing Critiques of MBA Programs
Recently critiques about MBA programs have increased in number. Many believe that management
education focuses on learning of managerial skills that are needed in current ever changing business
environment. Research conducted in the past suggested that individuals with a Master s degree in
Business Administration generally perform better in managerial positions than those who do not
hold an MBA degree (Baruch Peiperl, 2000). In a dissenting view however, the author noted that an
MBA qualification does not adequately equip students with both soft and hard skills which are
needed for effective management. In addition, Researchers argue that in management education, the
soft skills are ignored and the hard skills are emphasized.
Empirical studies (Boyatzis Renio, 1989) demonstrated that MBA programme has significant
positive effect on graduates managerial competencies but they contend that did not appear effective
in enhancing soft skills. In overall view, an assessment of how MBA graduates fared after attaining
MBA degree, led (Sturges, Simpson, Altman, 2003) to deduce that the graduates become more
effective managers who display self confidence, people management and team working skills. In
their study on the motivators of choosing a management course, Nyaribo, Prakash Owino, (2012),
concluded that MBA education should combine explicit knowledge of the basic disciplines with
the tacit knowledge that comes from practice in order to provide MBA graduates with a

Research Proposal On Right To Repair Legislation

Dear Senator JosГ© MenГ©ndez,
I thank you for your hard work representing our district in the State Capitol in Austin. I am a
student of cyber security at the University of Texas at San Antonio that uses electronics constantly
as part of my learning as well as other aspects of my life. It has come to my attention that in order
to repair the devices that we supposedly own, we must either send them over to the original

This not only applies to farm equipment, but to technology at large. The same problems that
farmers face with programmers face in their Internet connected devices, motorists have in their
new tech savvy cars, and gamers face in their recently broken gaming consoles. The repair
monopoly is huge because of the lack of regulation and is resulting in larger companies stifling
smaller business, therefore reducing competition, driving up the price of repair in general, and
killing local jobs.
This calls into question some basic ideas of property. When you a buy a product, is it really
yours? According to many companies, including Apple, John Deere, and Sony, it really isn t. You
re really just purchasing a license to use a product and how you use it is entirely up to the OEM.
This question of where and how a consumer should repair a device should not be answered by the
OEM.
This further creates a culture of obselesence. In cases where it would cost more to repair a device
rather than to buy a new one, the latter is chosen. This can have unintended consequences for the
environment through electronic waste, or e waste. The purposefully short lifespan of technology
heavily contributes to this and a culture of repairing would properly address this.
Solution
My solution includes legislation that would ensure that

Analysis of Friedrich NietzscheВґs Book 5 of The Gay...
Friedrich Nietzsche s own skepticism symbolized the secular changes in contemporary Western
civilization, in which he details mankind s break away from faith into a new rule of chaos. In
Book 5 of The Gay Science, Nietzsche establishes that God is dead , meaning that modern Europe
has abandoned religion in favor of rationality and science (Nietzsche 279). From this death, the
birth of a new infinite blossoms in which the world is open to an unlimited amount of
interpretations that do not rely on the solid foundations of faith in religion or science. However, in
contrast to the other philosophers of his age such as Immanuel Kantand Georg Wilhelm Friedrich
Hegel, Nietzsche deviates from the omniscient determinism of historytowards a... Show more

Despite such claims, Nietzsche criticizes this mistaken idea that the knowledge of the universe can
be comprehended by any method; he argues that not even the most scrupulously conscientious
analysis and self examination of the intellect cannot successfully interpret the progressive history
of the world as the human intellect cannot avoid seeing itself in [only] its perspectives (Nietzsche
336). To Nietzsche, Kant and Hegel s attempts to find truth in history is faulty because faith is
just now found in science and reasoning rather than religion. What Kant and Hegel fail to realize
is that the human race s separation from this faith gave rise to our new infinite , in which the
world has become infinite for [humanity] all over again, inasmuch as we cannot reject the
possibility that it may include infinite interpretations (Nietzsche 336). Thus the new infinite is self
consciously made by the individual members of humanity itself, as we can now independently
interpret the world ourselves as we see fit. Nietzsche declares that even if some of these
interpretations may include too much devilry, stupidity and foolishness , it does not matter
because it does not rely on faith (Nietzsche 336). The new infinite that arises is ours, in which the
abundance of perspectives is too overwhelming for any scholar to give meaning to such chaos.
There is no logical reason how such disorder should

Essay On Treasure Fleets
My favorite scholarly pursuit to date is in a category of its own, combining most of the
examples in the given prompt. It began roughly three years ago when I first read about the
Spanish treasure fleets of the early 1700s in one of my history books. The subject was just
barely brushed upon, but it was enough to spark my curiosity on the topic and I decided to look
up more information. After reading several books and individual articles, I focused my intended
research on a single fleet: the 1715 treasure fleet. Consisting of eleven ships, the 1715 fleet had
been laden with gold, fine china, and other valuables. Spain was in desperate need of funds due to
the War of Succession, so the large treasure fleet was not an uncommon sight. In what could be
considered an either brave or spectacularly stupid move, the commander decided to remain in

After even more digging, I also found a possible link to the infamous pirate Samuel Bellamy, who
had attempted to find the San Miguel not long before his turn to piracy. I believe even now that the
ship may have sunk somewhere east of Amelia Island off the coast of Florida. A current
expedition, however, is still searching the Nassau Sound. I cannot put enough emphasis on just
how much this pursuit sharpened my research skills and expanded my interest in both the
environment and history. One bit of information led to another, and I learned more from this
research than I probably would have in a normal high school classroom setting. Many of the
things I learned will actually apply directly to my major in environmental science as well, which
makes all of that research even more valuable to me. The fact that I had a lot of fun in the process

Criteria for Evaluating Media Violence Essay
No Universal Criteria for Evaluating Media Violence
In a famous speech in 1995, Bob Dole, in an effort to gain more conservative support for his
impending Republican Presidential Nomination, unleashed a damning indictment of the movie
industry, seemingly unprovoked and somewhat puzzling. (Lacayo) Dole s speech and especially the
rebuttals to it raise many questions central to the debate over violence in film: is violence
destructive to impressionable viewers, is violence critical to the success of the industry, does
violence have aesthetic value, who decides what is violent, and if something is found to be violent,
should it be banned? By going beyond Dole s speech to carefully examine these questions, it is
found that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Taking this into account, it is no coincidence that Dole selected The Lion King, Forrest Gump, and
True Lies, all huge money earners, as his films that represent exemplary family films. (Lacayo)
Viewed purely as an industry, violent content is vital to the success of current feature films;
tobacco and alcohol companies produce and sell products that are proven to have negative effects,
yet are allowed to continue selling. There is no concrete evidence regarding the effects of violent
content in film, so how could an entire industry be penalized for speculation. However, to view this
situation in terms of money only would seem cold hearted, so other variables must be taken into
account.
One such variable would be the question of whether film violence has actual aesthetic value,
specifically if it has artistic worth. One would be hard pressed to argue that violence is not
entertainment, the high grosses and popularity these films generate disprove that theory at it s
core, at least from the standpoint of the public. Why do people watch scenes of extreme violence
if not to be entertained? Perhaps people watch violence for it s cathartic value, releasing emotion in
a healthy manner by allowing the characters onscreen to act out their personal, as well as the
audience s emotions. Or possibly, people watch for the stimuli they receive by watching such hyper
kinetic action. Maybe people watch to admire the stunts and special effects

Decline In Cedar Trees
The article discusses three possible reasons for the decrease in the population of a specific
species of Cedar trees, named yellow Cedar. However, the professor states that none of these
reasons could be responsible for the decline in Cedar population. The professor s arguments to
oppose the article are as follows. First, the passage introduces insects such as bark beetle as a
potential damaging factor. According to the author, these insects might exploit trees as parasites.
However, the professor refutes this by referring to the fact that Cedar trees are indeed resistant
plants against insects. Since the trees are coated with toxic chemicals, they are somewhat immune
against insects, thus bark beetle could not cause damage and reduction of population in Cedar trees.

Cultural Values And Its Impact On Identity
People has been trying to find their own identity throughout their lives. Identity, in fact, is a
changing subject that are influenced by many different experiences and circumstances. Identity is
the product of varieties of sources and is hard to return to its original shape. The society and the
environment that people grow up in play major roles in impacting their identity. Changes in these
environments create an ever lasting changes in these identity. Identity slowly becomes concealed in
order to help people better survive in their society. People s real identity becomes hidden so that
they can better cope with the changes in culture, learning experience, society s expectations, and,
stereotype. Sometimes, people have to hide their concerns and identity in order to obey cultural
changes and avoid being culturally excluded. Culture impacts people s background and values.
Their culture plays a major role in determining who they are. Cultural practices and values may
change as the culture goes through different experiences. However, there are times that these
cultural values and practices become incorrect as they are changed. Yet, it is difficult for people to
question these values and beliefs. For example, Terry Tempest Williams states that in The Clan of
One Breasted Women that obedience is revered, and independent thinking is not (546). Independent
thinking are eliminated in order to avoid differences in opinions within the culture. Cultures

Cleopatra s father was King Ptolemy XII. Little is known about Cleopatra s mother, but some
speculation presumes she may have been her father s sister, Cleopatra V Tryphaena. Debate also
surrounds Cleopatra s ethnicity. While it was believed for a long time that she was of Greek
descent, some speculate that her lineage may have been black African.
In 51 B.C., Ptolemy XII died, leaving the throne to 18 year old Cleopatra and her brother, the 10
year old Ptolemy XIII. It is likely that the two siblings married, as was customary at the time. Over
the next few years Egypt struggled to face down a number of issues, from an unhealthy economy to
floods to famine.
Political turmoil also shaped this period. Soon after they assumed power, complications arose
between Cleopatra and Ptolemy XIII. Eventually Cleopatra fled to Syria, where she assembled
an army to defeat her rival in order to declare the throne for herself. In 48, she returned to Egypt
with her military might and faced her brother at Pelusium, located on the empire s eastern edge.
Most of what we know about Cleopatra was written after her death when it was politically
expedient to portray her as a threat to Rome and its stability. Thus, some of what we know about
Cleopatra may have been exaggerated or misrepresented by those sources. Cassius Dio, one of the
ancient sources that tells her story, summarizes her story as She captivated the two greatest Romans
of her day, and

The Kingdom of Greece
Following the Second World War, Greece was plunged into decades of strife and political turmoil.
The Kingdom of Greece falls somewhere in the middle of the superpower confrontation during the
Cold War. Originally, Stalin and Churchill had agreed to let Britain run a non communist Greece,
yet the nation struggled between the Western and Eastern blocs and their respective superpowers
influence [1]. This struggle originates from the German and Italian occupation of the Kingdom of
Greece during the Second World War. During this occupation, many resistance groups of different
ideologies began to emerge. Following the war, while the Greek government was still taking refuge

More people died in the Civil War than in the occupation of the Second World War [1].
Consequently, the nation became extremely polarized, and with the Kingdom s victory in the
Civil War, many Greeks sought refuge in communist countries. The Kingdom of Greece
experienced a coup d Г©tat in the following years, by a group of rightist and non communist
officials in 1977 [2]. The latter coup was led by George Papadopoulos, who installed a military
regime in the Kingdom of Greece. When this fell apart, a conservative government led by
Constantine Karamanlis dissolve the monarchy and legalize the KKE. Later, in 1981, the center left
government of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement allowed former DSE to return to Greece after
taking refuge in other communist nations [3].
Although Greece officially aligned itself with the United States and its Western Bloc allies, the
nation was tremendously split between the influences of the Soviet Union and the United States.
The lack of a stable government in the immediate aftermath of the war led to a brutal Civil War.
Furthermore, decades of political strife between the leftist and rightist wings of society led to an
increasingly unstable nation. Greece truly was caught between the two superpowers spheres of

In the T Mobile 1 commercial it starts out with a middle aged man and Kristen Schaal. The
commercial was inspired off of the movie 50 Shades of Grey or the movie 50 Shades Darker,
which was made after the initial movie, 50 Shades of Grey. The two individuals enter the
playroom where numerous objects are seen hung all over the room. Schaal was being blindfolded
as she walked into the room. As the man starts to unravel the blindfold Schaal gasps in such
astonishment of the room. Later on the man starts stating the specific elements Verizon has to offer.

It is logical for people wanting to save money on their phone bill. If the mobile user goes over
the limited amount then the cost will start to accumulate. Every time you go over your data
limit you get punished. Nobody would want to pay outrageous rate and fees. The gasps,
excitement, and the thrills is what created the pathos. Schaal was astonished by all the facts he
was saying because she was into that type of pain. T Mobile 1 argues that they are a more
reliable company with less punishing fees thus creating ethos. Symbolism is seen in this also.
The red Verizon phone screen seen dangling from the stand represents data being overly used
causing the phone bill to inflate. The whip also acts as a form of symbolism representing the
punishment. Another literary term that was involved during this commercial is parody. In
general the T Mobile 1 commercial imitates the movie 50 Shades of Grey. Irony could also be
included during this commercial because the mobile plan can sometimes cause people to be
indecisive on whether they want to feel the pain or not. In the commercial it said Wireless pain is

I think some of the personality traits might be difficult to have in a work environment. I think the
INTP can be good when asking questions to see multiple sides, but it will be hard for them to

Love and Marriage in Pride and Prejudice Essays
How does Jane Austen present love and marriage in Pride and

Jane Austen presents love and marriage in many ways in the novel
Pride and Prejudice. In this essay I am going to discuss some of these marriages, not only from

Jane Austen opens Pride and Prejudice with a statement:
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must want
be in want of a wife.

When Mr Bennet speaks to his beloved daughter Lizzie, he feelingly says to her,
My dear child, let me not have the grief of seeing you unable to respect your partner in life. You
know not what you are about.
This happens when Mr Darcy has just proposed to Elizabeth. When I question why Mr and Mrs
Bennet s marriage is so unsuccessful, I am faced with three points that I think contribute to their
marital problem. Between Mr and Mrs Bennet there is no intellectual equality. Mr
Bennet is clever, but on the other hand his wife isn t, in fact Mrs
Bennet is a fool! She does not understand her husband in the slightest manner, and so Mr Bennet
frequently takes this opportunity to make a quick comment that will offend Mrs Bennet. Jane
Austen says, The experience of three and twenty years had been insufficient to make his wife

These twenty three years of his unhappy marriage had brought Mrs
Bennet s characteristics out in a true light. She was a woman of mean understanding, very little
information and an uncertain temper. She fancied herself nervous whenever she felt discontented.
The business of her life was to get her daughters married, it seemed that was all the poor woman
ever went on a bout and it infuriated Mr Bennet greatly. The second point is that Mr Bennet never

Descriptive Essay About The Woods
The Woods There s been stories floating around regarding the forest lining the edge of town. Some
folk around here think that there s animals and creatures beyond imagination past the treeline,
others think that s a bunch of bologna. One night, about twenty years ago, a young boy ran away
from home and fled to the forest. Forty eight hours later the police declare him missing, and for
three weeks police, detectives, and civilian volunteers were searching for the boy. And so the weeks

Carson, Zach, and a few other of their friends were hanging out at the annual Halloween bonfire.
They were heading home when one of the boys decided they should take a shortcut, taking an

cracks. Coincidentally, this winding road cuts a corner through the forest, emerging on the other
side of town. Wandering along the pothole laden street, the wind starts howling, and the group hears

Introduction
Between the years 218 201 B.C. the two superpowers of their era, the Roman Empire and the
Carthaginian Empire waged war with each other to determine who would control the Mediterranean
(Encyclopedia Britannica, 2014; Nepos, n.d.). Subsequently, this conflict known as the second
Punic War would lead to the Roman Empire s dominance in the region and would act as a stepping
stone to her further expansion and growth into one of the great empires of history (Mark, 2011a).
Moreover, in my discussion post for this unit, I will briefly discuss the cause of the conflict, the
conflict itself and the outcomes for both participants.

Scipio, who had suffered a humiliating defeat to Hannibal earlier at Cannae, carefully studied
Hannibal s tactics, resolving to be ready for his foe the next time they met (Mark, 2011a). The
result was a stunning victory at Zama (202 B.C.) where the Roman forces utterly devastated and
routed the Carthaginian army (Mark, 2011a). Shortly thereafter Carthage formally surrendered
(Morey, 1901).
Several terms were imposed by the Roman victors: Carthage had to surrender her holdings in
Spain and all of the islands between African and Europe, Carthage had to pay annual tribute to
Rome and Carthage had to turn its entire navy over to Rome (Mark, 2011a; Morey, 1901).

The Roman victory in the Punic Wars made her the foremost power in the region and laid the path
for her to continue her conquest of Europe, Africa and the Middle East ultimately leading to the
largest empire to have ever existed in Western Civilization (Mark, 2011b). Moreover, even after
Rome s eventual downfall, her influence is still felt in the languages spoken today, in the calendars
we use, in legal matters, in the structure of government and in the organization of the modern

America s Competitive Advantage
I ve always been a calm and collective individual, favoring the slow and calculated approach to
problem solving, assuring the problem is achieved to maximum success. As such, I m the kind
of person to try everything first hand, in order to find out the true best way in order to
accomplish a task, despite what a guide may say. However, I also have the intelligence to do so
in a productive way. They say you shouldn t reinvent the wheel, and to build upon others success,
at some point someone tried just that, and was able to create a better wheel. At the end of the day,
it is still a wheel, but it s this innovation that drives the world forward. I m an innovator. I ll be the
guy trying the thing no one thought of, using some method someone dismissed as xp waste and
still be able to put some spin on it in order to create something that is better than everything else....

The Effects Of Polluted Water In Developing Countries
It s no secret that there are countries that are more privileged than others. For example, here in the
United States of America having clean drinking water, garbage pickup trucks, health clinics is
something common. Like we don t even think about not having access to these things. In
developing countries things these things i just listed are more often rare than they are common.
The topic i will talking about is the effects of polluted water in developing countries and solutions
that can be put into effect to help change these circumstances.
So how does polluted water come to be in developing countries ? Well there has to be a source. The
main ways that water is contaminated are human and animal waste, lack of sanitation and lack of
laws to prevent water pollution. In developing countries it is a challenge managing waste
properly. One reason we talked about in class is overcrowding. There are large concentrations of
people that are living in small areas. Proper sanitation isn t always promised in developing
countries. So water is looked at as an alternative to dispose of waste. Rivers, streams, and lakes can
be feasible options for waste. Also developing countries can t always provide indoor plumbing to
everyone in the country so for people who are in poverty throwing up waste in water is the only to
get rid of waste. This can be a very big risk factor for catching diseases such as diarrhea and
cholera.Risk factors is an exposure that increases the chances of developing a

Smallpox Is An Acute Contagious Disease
SMALLPOX Introduction Smallpox is an acute contagious disease that is caused by the variola
virus which is a member of the Genus Orthopoxvirus family. It infects humans only as a result of
its ability to escape the host immune system, and avoid any further activation (Koplow 2003).
The virus is a two stranded DNA virus. There exist two forms of the variola virus namely the
variola major and variola minor. Variola major is the one that is lethal, while variola minor is not
lethal but a mere strain. The most common strain is the variola major, which produces the more
severe symptoms and with a higher fatality rate of 20% to 40%, within a week of infection
(Koplow 2003). Key features of the life cycle(s) The initial step is whereby the virus attaches to the
host cell and infects an individual. It normally enters through the respiratory system. It attaches to
the mouth, trachea or lung mucosa. The cells forming the mucous membrane are loosely packed
hence permitting penetration and movement into the saliva. Once the virus reaches the cell
membrane, it penetrates through endocytosis. In the host cell, the main protein in released
(Koplow 2003). The virus replicates in the cytoplasm of the host cell. DNA replication and
transcription may start immediately as the virus itself contains enzymes for replication and
transcription. It does not rely on the host cell enzymes to begin replication (Koplow 2003). First,
the DNA and RNA polymerase are made, along with other transcription

Delivering Sustainable Development For The Uk
Delivering Sustainable Development in the UK
Sustainable construction must be considered as the proper response to the ongoing practices that
are currently applied in the construction industry to deliver its products. A study carried out by
BREA and AEAT reveals that only in England, construction, demolition and refurbishment activities
produce around 33% of all waste ; furthermore, around 380 million tonnes of resources are
consumed by the construction industry each year (BRE; AEAT, 2012). The scope of the negative
impact the construction industry is having upon the environment through processes such as the
acquiring of materials, the procedures undertaken to develop products and their eventual deposition,
became a UK government must solve issue. Tony Blair, as a reply to the global scientific consensus
of climate change being a result of human activity stated that we can move the debate from
whether there is a problem to how to deal with it (HM Government, 2011).
Accordingly, the government decided to address this issue by creating a plan to tackle it locally
and, eventually, globally. The implementation of new principles and strategies to proceed towards
sustainability in documents like Meeting the Energy Challenge: A White Paper on Energy (2007),
Securing the Future (2005) and alike, that attempt to drive the industry towards sustainable
products, are an evidence of the government s active agenda to address the problem. In addition,
schemes as CRC Energy

Feminism In Eve Ensler s Buffy The Vampire Slayer
In the spring of 1997 Buffy the Vampire Slayer debuted a show that addressed aspects of feminism
that were brought to life in society. This was around the same time the third wave of feminism
began. The wave started in the early 1990s and continues through present day and it is responding
to the failures of the second wave of feminismand also addressed the backlash that the second
created. Although there are many ideas from the second wave that they still used as a fighting tool
to keep the wave going. For example, the making domestic abuse shelters for women and children,
acknowledging the abuse of rape on women on public level, and legalizing the right to abortions
and many more organizations were created so that women and children would... Show more content

Magazine. Although it may have seemed like creating journals was a big deal in the third wave
this was less important. The effective ways of speaking out in the third weave came by feminists
showed their concerns through sexist images and symbols. A play that later turned to a book, The
Vagina Monologues, written by Eve Ensler explored women s feelings with sexuality that
discussed vagina centered topics, for example, orgasms, birth, and rape. The third wave redefined
women and girls as assertive, powerful, and in control of their own sexuality. The third wave, to an
extent almost unimaginable to the members of the first and second waves because some ideas had
many facets with people concerning their gender, ethnic, and class identities, experiences, and
interests. The third wavers sought to recalim and redefine the ideas that media placed ideas of
womanhood, gender, femininity, and masculinity. The third wave brought into existence the idea
that gender is not based on your traits you recieve at birth. Instead it is the idea that a person
determines what their gender is based on how they feel. Another important aspect of feminism in
this wave was sex

Isolation In Ray Bradbury s The Pedestrian
Los Angeles is a land of many things. Many people come in search of fame and fortune only to
find feelings of isolation. In Ray Bradbury s short story The Pedestrian, Leonard Mead
experiences feelings of isolation in Los Angeles in 2052 A.D.. Los Angeles is known to change
people in many ways. People often find themselves isolated after moving to Los Angeles. Leonard
Mead is in conflict with the cityof LA, himself, and the mechanized police officer who takes him
in. Leonard Mead is conflicted with the city of LA because he experiences isolation. Leonard
Mead is not the only person that is in conflict with the city of LA. Many famous people today, such
as Anthony Kiedis of Red Hot Chili Peppers, experience these isolated feelings... Show more

One person that experiences the same isolated feelings that Leonard Mead experiences is Red
Hot Chili Pepper s lead singer, Anthony Kiedis. Anthony Kiedis is an icon in the music world.
He lives in Los Angeles and experiences the the good and the bad of it. Kiedis sings to the tune
of all the people coming to Los Angeles hoping for fame and fortune in his song, Californication.
When Kiedis sings And if you want these kind of dreams/ It s Californication, he is describing
the lost dreams and false promises associated with Los Angeles and the LA lifestyle. Even
though Kiedis is living the life people come to Los Angeles in search for, he has also
experienced the loneliness and isolated feelings that can be caused by the city. Kiedis went
through tough times when he fights drug addiction, and has to rebuild his life. Kiedis opens up
about these feelings of loneliness in many of his songs, and one example of this in in This
Velvet Glove. Kiedis sings about himself as Someone who s been/ Sittin by the phone, I m left
alone/ In another zone. The Los Angeles lifestyle is a cause of Kiedis drug addiction that creates
a serious feeling of loneliness and isolation when he loses everyone in his life. Kiedis is singing
about himself getting ready to inject Heroin, and he is lamenting on his vast array of drug
experiences. Kiedis is waiting for a call that never comes and he feels the bearing weight of
isolation that is created by his Los Angeles lifestyle. Kiedis isolation relates to Leonard Mead s
isolation while walking down the streets of Los Angeles. This is one example that proves Bradbury
s allegory of how LA changes people can be seen

Research on the Sale of Alcoholic Beverages in the United...
General considerations about alcohol in the United States The production and sale of alcohol in
the US is regulated at a state level, by local legislation, which means that conditions very from
state to state. This also means that alcohol can be sold in particular places. For example, in
Maryland, alcohol cannot be sold in supermarkets, while in Florida (or in some parts of Florida),
beer and wine can be sold in places such as Wal Mart. In other states, the sale of alcoholic
beverages is done strictly in liquor stores, so beer, wine and liquor such as whiskey will only be
sold in these locations. In California, the sale of alcohol is relatively unrestricted, meaning that
alcohol can be sold much easier, in locations ranging from supermarkets (beer and wine, as well as
liquor), hypermarkets or gas stations. At the same time, in some states, eighteen of all US states,
the state government controls in a monopoly the sale and retail of beer, wine and spirits, which
explains some of the restrictions that are applied in terms of location, time of sale etc. What is the
relationship between monetary policy and inflation? Monetary policy controls the supply of money
in an economy and, through this, the level of inflation. When the Federal Reserve uses different
monetary instruments, to be discussed below, it impacts the money supply and the levels of
inflation. So, monetary policy is the type of policy that the Federal Reserve uses to control inflation
in the economy. What

Criticism Of The Screwtape Letters
What a Tragedy! The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis is a satirical comedy about a demon,
Wormwood, who tries to influence the behavior of his patient. The letters are written to Wormwood
by his uncle, Screwtape. Wormwood s ultimate goal by influencing the patient s actions is to ensure
that he will end up in hell. Though Wormwoodtries his best to excel in every task he is assigned,
he usually ends up failing. As a result of Wormwood s failures, Screwtape provides him with
helpful advice that comes with criticism. Although Lewis intended for the story to be comical, it
should be interpreted as a tragedy. In the beginning of chapter 5, Screwtape is infuriated with
Wormwood. Screwtape expected a detailed report from Wormwood on his progress with the
patient and instead he received a vague rhapsody because Wormwood was intoxicated. Wormwood
is reminded that duty comes before pleasure. This instance is similar to one that Henri Bergson
uses in his theory of comedy. Bergson suggest the idea of absentmindedness. He defines this as,
when a certain comic effect has its origin in a certain cause, the more natural we regard the cause
to be, the more comic shall we find the effect. (Bergson) Most adults would claim that they have
had a drink of alcohol before. Drinking alcohol is a natural human feature, that even Jesus
partook in. However, when done in excess it can cause a series of issues. One issue being that you
are not able to properly complete your work like

My Life Lesson Trough A Teacher s Eyes
The Life Lesson Trough a Teacher s Eyes, is a book written by Dr. Jillian Laderhouse. This book
is like a journal where Dr. Laterhouse tells personal experiences that have shaped her life. The
book commences off with a strongly affirmation where Dr. Latehouse states that be a teacher is her
life s calling. In the introduction of the book Laterhouse establish her foundation as a teacher, she
mentioned many experiences that shape her as a teacher and recall the fact that she lived in a
teacher professionfamily. She mentioned stories about her childhood, stories that have shaped
her life into the teacher profession; she stated I grew in a teacher s home . As I read the book I
noticed that I have not had the same opportunity as Laterhouse to live in a teacher s home.
However, as I continue reading the book I saw that the lessons learned by the author can help me
even though I did not grow in a teacher s home. It is evident in the book the spiritual life and God
centered life.
Laterhouse dived her book in seven lesson learned. Every lesson brings me to reflect about God,
about myself and about others. I consider that every lesson mentioned is important I will recall
those points that I consider important to my life. The first lesson learned was from parenting. As
Laterhouse mentioned as believers we have guidance available to us through prayer and Scripture,
but became believers does not automatically equip us with the insights and techniques to be a
parent. I have

  • 2. Analysis Of One Art By Elizabeth Bishop One Art Poetry Analysis One art is poem written by Elizabeth Bishop discussing loss and the role it plays in the world. The poem conveys a powerful message subtly hidden in the speaker s use of connotation and denotation. In addition to the multiple connotations of loss in the poem, repetition and sound coupled together add meaning overall to the poem. The form of the poem contributes to the uses of repetition and connotation to emphasize the ease of loss. In the poem as seen throughout much of it the speaker uses sound and repetition heavily through the length of the poem. The poem itself is a mirror into the author, Elizabeth Bishop s, life and losses she s collected throughout her lifetime. Upon research into Bishop the poem can easily be seen as a autobiographical piece. In the poem the speaker confesses to losing two cities, lovely ones Bishop lost her husband to suicide some years prior to having written the poem. Many of the losses described in the poem are personal anecdotes straight from Bishops life. The poem casually denotes the losses experienced in Bishops life creating a casual and ironic tone throughout the length of the poem. Specifically the poem is a villanelle, a 19 line poem with two rhymes throughput the poem consisting of five tercets and a quatrain. In One Art the repeating lines are The art of losing isn t hard to master and Disaster , the end of every stanza in the poem the stanza ends with either of the two. In every the poem builds upon ... • 3. Reason In The Most Dangerous Game By General Zaroff Reason or Instinct? Instinct is no match for reason This is true according to general Zaroff, but does the author of the story agree? Yes, the author of The Most Dangerous Game believes that reason is no match for instinct. Throughout the story he gives examples of how reason has out smarted instinct. Reason is the explanation or justification of a certain action or event;the reason is not affected by force of habit. It is a process of very analytical thinking. Instinct, instinct is action woven into your mind for long periods of time; it is a second nature for you. For example a professional basketball player following through after your shot, they do not have to think about what they are doing they just do it. His initial instinct was to pursue after the boat, Rainsford tries but fails. He then depends on long term reasoning to grab hold of the situation and lead himself back to safety. Instead, If this man s reasoning did not come into play he most likely would have lost his energy and not have the capability of finding shipwreck island and drown. • 4. Impact Of Advertising On Advertiser s Advertising Essay Advertising has many different forms of writing in its field. There are three major characteristics that impact advertiser s advertising methods. First, some advertiser s might say a big impact would be getting the advertiser s customer s product to the companies target market. The second one might be how to inform the audience of the product and what media vehicles to use to make sure the target gets the advertisement. The third one is creating the final advertisement. In these three tasks advertisers have to write and reach their customers target audience with the new or improved product, to write to the media vehicle the advertisingcompany wants to use to reach a market, and to write the advertisement itself. Overall, advertisers and advertising companies help firms or companies get a product to an audience. In one part of an ad agency a group of employees are working on finding the target market, the people who will invest in the product. Then there is a group of people that work on talking to the company about what the company wants the ad agency to get across. There are also people who make the advertisement and people who pick the media vehicle to reach the audience. Media vehicle examples are: television networks or channels, newspapers, magazines, billboards, and internet. Once all of their factors are decided the ad agency puts them all together to make a cohesive advertisement that is cost affective and will reach majority of the target market. Advertisers ... How accurate is this statement for the pair of texts you have studied in this unit? In your answer you may like to discuss some or all of the following: form, structure, language features, context, information ideas. When texts are considered together, responders realise that texts are connected through their similar themes and ideas displayed in their textual forms. This idea is represented in the matrix by The Desert of the Real and the motifs of mirrors throughout the movie. The reflections represent the confusion toward the blurred line between reality and simulation. Similarly, this idea of the blurred line between reality and simulation is reflected with Cypher s conversation with Agent Smith. A firm believer in the theory ignorance is bliss , Cypher prefers the happier simulated life to the truth facing him. By emphasising this simulated environment, the Wachowski brothers allow us to analyse our own dependency on technology for our lives. Similarly, Card analyses this idea of human kind living in a simulacra in his novel Ender s game. Not knowing the truth, Ender is deceived by his military superiors into believing that the real battle against the buggers was simply a computer game. Real. Not a game. After this sudden revelation, Ender cannot cope with his existence, and only finds redemption in religion. In both texts, the composers use textual forms to highlight the idea that computers are used to create a simulation which absorbs the user, hiding them from the realities of life. Similarly, both texts use defamiliarisation to give representations on gender. The futuristic shifts are used to reflect contextual shifts in gender paradigms. In The Matrix, this is apparent through all the androgynous characters, such as Trinity, Switch and to some ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Blackie The Mixer Have you ever heard of a story told by a dog? The Mixer, written by P.G Wodehouse, is a cute and funny story about a dog that is adopted by a robber. Blackie, the narrator/main character, is a dog that misinterprets anything and unexpectedly saves his new family from the robber. As a result of Blackie s distinct character traits, he doesn t understand certain events which makes him a unreliable narrator. However, these same traits make him a believable dog. Blackie has a very oblivious personality. For example, on page 77 of the book is says I looked at the man with a great deal of respect. He was evidently someone important, if they worried so much about his health. However, when you look at the sentence before that, the policeman says to the man, They told me to tell you you needed a change of air. See? This proves that the man had most likely had been causing trouble and needed a change of air or in other words, moving out of their town. The 1920s were times of change in the United States, from women getting the right to vote to prohibition to changes in education, such as the Butler Act, which created unease and animosity throughout the country. The Butler Act of 1925 prohibited the teaching of evolutionand any other theories that deny the story of the divine creation of man as taught in the Bible in all Universities and public schools in Tennessee. Giving students freedom in their academic lives encouraged students to form their own opinions. Teachers had biased feelings towards those who denied students the right to the whole truth because of specific religions, because it raises an uneducated generation. Fundamentalists needed to realize that as times changed9 modernization of education is necessary, regardless of religious beliefs so students receive the full truth and become liberated people. If students are restricted from certain topics and are only taught one view on a few subjects then there will be no new or different ways of thinking, rendering education pointless. Without freedom in the intellectual life, and without the inspiration of uncensored discovery and discussion, there could ultimately be no scholarship, no schools at all and no education. The American Federation of Teachers expressed their fear for the future of education and how it would be constrained due to traditionalism, in contradiction of Sparks and other creationists. Dudley Field Malone, an attorney on the defense team for the Scopes trial, argued for the importance of teaching science and religion to fully educate the students and allow them to form their own opinions and ideas. Many believe that management education focuses on learning of managerial skills that are needed in current ever changing business environment. Research conducted in the past suggested that individuals with a Master s degree in Business Administration generally perform better in managerial positions than those who do not hold an MBA degree (Baruch Peiperl, 2000). In a dissenting view however, the author noted that an MBA qualification does not adequately equip students with both soft and hard skills which are needed for effective management. In addition, Researchers argue that in management education, the soft skills are ignored and the hard skills are emphasized. Dear Senator JosГ© MenГ©ndez, I thank you for your hard work representing our district in the State Capitol in Austin. I am a student of cyber security at the University of Texas at San Antonio that uses electronics constantly as part of my learning as well as other aspects of my life. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This not only applies to farm equipment, but to technology at large. The same problems that farmers face with programmers face in their Internet connected devices, motorists have in their new tech savvy cars, and gamers face in their recently broken gaming consoles. The repair monopoly is huge because of the lack of regulation and is resulting in larger companies stifling smaller business, therefore reducing competition, driving up the price of repair in general, and killing local jobs. This calls into question some basic ideas of property. When you a buy a product, is it really yours? According to many companies, including Apple, John Deere, and Sony, it really isn t. You re really just purchasing a license to use a product and how you use it is entirely up to the OEM. This question of where and how a consumer should repair a device should not be answered by the OEM. This further creates a culture of obselesence. In cases where it would cost more to repair a device rather than to buy a new one, the latter is chosen. This can have unintended consequences for the environment through electronic waste, or e waste. The purposefully short lifespan of technology heavily contributes to this and a culture of repairing would properly address this. Solution My solution includes legislation that would ensure that ... Friedrich Nietzsche s own skepticism symbolized the secular changes in contemporary Western civilization, in which he details mankind s break away from faith into a new rule of chaos. In Book 5 of The Gay Science, Nietzsche establishes that God is dead , meaning that modern Europe has abandoned religion in favor of rationality and science (Nietzsche 279). From this death, the birth of a new infinite blossoms in which the world is open to an unlimited amount of interpretations that do not rely on the solid foundations of faith in religion or science. However, in contrast to the other philosophers of his age such as Immanuel Kantand Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, Nietzsche deviates from the omniscient determinism of historytowards a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Despite such claims, Nietzsche criticizes this mistaken idea that the knowledge of the universe can be comprehended by any method; he argues that not even the most scrupulously conscientious analysis and self examination of the intellect cannot successfully interpret the progressive history of the world as the human intellect cannot avoid seeing itself in [only] its perspectives (Nietzsche 336). To Nietzsche, Kant and Hegel s attempts to find truth in history is faulty because faith is just now found in science and reasoning rather than religion. What Kant and Hegel fail to realize is that the human race s separation from this faith gave rise to our new infinite , in which the world has become infinite for [humanity] all over again, inasmuch as we cannot reject the possibility that it may include infinite interpretations (Nietzsche 336). Thus the new infinite is self consciously made by the individual members of humanity itself, as we can now independently interpret the world ourselves as we see fit. Nietzsche declares that even if some of these interpretations may include too much devilry, stupidity and foolishness , it does not matter because it does not rely on faith (Nietzsche 336). The new infinite that arises is ours, in which the abundance of perspectives is too overwhelming for any scholar to give meaning to such chaos. There is no logical reason how such disorder should ... It began roughly three years ago when I first read about the Spanish treasure fleets of the early 1700s in one of my history books. The subject was just barely brushed upon, but it was enough to spark my curiosity on the topic and I decided to look up more information. After reading several books and individual articles, I focused my intended research on a single fleet: the 1715 treasure fleet. Consisting of eleven ships, the 1715 fleet had been laden with gold, fine china, and other valuables. (Lacayo) Dole s speech and especially the rebuttals to it raise many questions central to the debate over violence in film: is violence destructive to impressionable viewers, is violence critical to the success of the industry, does violence have aesthetic value, who decides what is violent, and if something is found to be violent, should it be banned? Taking this into account, it is no coincidence that Dole selected The Lion King, Forrest Gump, and True Lies, all huge money earners, as his films that represent exemplary family films. (Lacayo) Viewed purely as an industry, violent content is vital to the success of current feature films; tobacco and alcohol companies produce and sell products that are proven to have negative effects, yet are allowed to continue selling. There is no concrete evidence regarding the effects of violent content in film, so how could an entire industry be penalized for speculation. However, to view this situation in terms of money only would seem cold hearted, so other variables must be taken into account. One such variable would be the question of whether film violence has actual aesthetic value, specifically if it has artistic worth. One would be hard pressed to argue that violence is not entertainment, the high grosses and popularity these films generate disprove that theory at it s core, at least from the standpoint of the public. Why do people watch scenes of extreme violence if not to be entertained? Perhaps people watch violence for it s cathartic value, releasing emotion in a healthy manner by allowing the characters onscreen to act out their personal, as well as the audience s emotions. Or possibly, people watch for the stimuli they receive by watching such hyper kinetic action. Maybe people watch to admire the stunts and special effects ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In 51 B.C., Ptolemy XII died, leaving the throne to 18 year old Cleopatra and her brother, the 10 year old Ptolemy XIII. It is likely that the two siblings married, as was customary at the time. Over the next few years Egypt struggled to face down a number of issues, from an unhealthy economy to floods to famine. Political turmoil also shaped this period. Soon after they assumed power, complications arose between Cleopatra and Ptolemy XIII. Eventually Cleopatra fled to Syria, where she assembled an army to defeat her rival in order to declare the throne for herself. More importantly the fingerprints of Burke was found on the bowl of pineapple discovered in the kitchen post murder. While Burke was questioned briefly, he was never seriously considered as a suspect and was often shielded by his parents. • 37. Blue Girls By John Crowe Ransom John Crowe Ransom s poem, Blue Girls, is one speaker s attempt at trying to help a group of young school girls develop a more grown up view of themselves and the world around them. Ransom attempts to portray the reality of the actions and attitude of its targeted group, the blue girls, and attempts to enlighten them as to truth of the real world namely that their teenage hood and general life is actually a short experience and that in which no one can prolong any portion of it. By providing a depiction of a group of somewhat silly and irrational young girls, the speaker attempts to show these same girls the hard truth they re not so different from their elders whom they ridicule. To publish would be to spread out and distribute the information implying that the speaker somewhat wants to help the blue girls get the most out of their child/teenage hood. • 38. Descriptive Essay About The Woods The Woods There s been stories floating around regarding the forest lining the edge of town. Some folk around here think that there s animals and creatures beyond imagination past the treeline, others think that s a bunch of bologna. One night, about twenty years ago, a young boy ran away from home and fled to the forest. Forty eight hours later the police declare him missing, and for three weeks police, detectives, and civilian volunteers were searching for the boy. And so the weeks turned into months, and months turned into years, but the little boy never came home. Dude, what are you doing? Zach yelped, scurrying after his friend, tripping on branches. Earlier that evening, Carson, Zach, and a few other of their friends were hanging out at the annual Halloween bonfire. They were heading home when one of the boys decided they should take a shortcut, taking an alleyway behind the grocery store that cuts to a bumpy run down street littered with trash and cracks. Coincidentally, this winding road cuts a corner through the forest, emerging on the other side of town. Wandering along the pothole laden street, the wind starts howling, and the group hears a strange noise from amongst the trees, snapping branches and crunching leaves. Stopping, the boys peer in every direction, but notice nothing except the trees in the pale moonlight. Did you hear that? I think something s out there , one of the boys stated, peering through the branches to his left. No way man, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Subsequently, this conflict known as the second Punic War would lead to the Roman Empire s dominance in the region and would act as a stepping stone to her further expansion and growth into one of the great empires of history (Mark, 2011a). Scipio, who had suffered a humiliating defeat to Hannibal earlier at Cannae, carefully studied Hannibal s tactics, resolving to be ready for his foe the next time they met (Mark, 2011a). The result was a stunning victory at Zama (202 B.C.) where the Roman forces utterly devastated and routed the Carthaginian army (Mark, 2011a). Shortly thereafter Carthage formally surrendered (Morey, 1901). Several terms were imposed by the Roman victors: Carthage had to surrender her holdings in Spain and all of the islands between African and Europe, Carthage had to pay annual tribute to Rome and Carthage had to turn its entire navy over to Rome (Mark, 2011a; Morey, 1901). Conclusion The Roman victory in the Punic Wars made her the foremost power in the region and laid the path for her to continue her conquest of Europe, Africa and the Middle East ultimately leading to the largest empire to have ever existed in Western Civilization (Mark, 2011b). Moreover, even after Rome s eventual downfall, her influence is still felt in the languages spoken today, in the calendars we use, in legal matters, in the structure of government and in the organization of the modern military (Mark, ... • 41. The Effects Of Polluted Water In Developing Countries It s no secret that there are countries that are more privileged than others. For example, here in the United States of America having clean drinking water, garbage pickup trucks, health clinics is something common. Like we don t even think about not having access to these things. In developing countries things these things i just listed are more often rare than they are common. The topic i will talking about is the effects of polluted water in developing countries and solutions that can be put into effect to help change these circumstances. So how does polluted water come to be in developing countries ? Well there has to be a source. The main ways that water is contaminated are human and animal waste, lack of sanitation and lack of laws to prevent water pollution. In developing countries it is a challenge managing waste properly. One reason we talked about in class is overcrowding. There are large concentrations of people that are living in small areas. Proper sanitation isn t always promised in developing countries. So water is looked at as an alternative to dispose of waste. Rivers, streams, and lakes can be feasible options for waste. Also developing countries can t always provide indoor plumbing to everyone in the country so for people who are in poverty throwing up waste in water is the only to get rid of waste. This can be a very big risk factor for catching diseases such as diarrhea and cholera.Risk factors is an exposure that increases the chances of developing a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Smallpox Is An Acute Contagious Disease SMALLPOX Introduction Smallpox is an acute contagious disease that is caused by the variola virus which is a member of the Genus Orthopoxvirus family. It infects humans only as a result of its ability to escape the host immune system, and avoid any further activation (Koplow 2003). The virus is a two stranded DNA virus. There exist two forms of the variola virus namely the variola major and variola minor. Variola major is the one that is lethal, while variola minor is not lethal but a mere strain. The most common strain is the variola major, which produces the more severe symptoms and with a higher fatality rate of 20% to 40%, within a week of infection (Koplow 2003). Key features of the life cycle(s) The initial step is whereby the virus attaches to the host cell and infects an individual. It normally enters through the respiratory system. It attaches to the mouth, trachea or lung mucosa. The cells forming the mucous membrane are loosely packed hence permitting penetration and movement into the saliva. Once the virus reaches the cell membrane, it penetrates through endocytosis. In the host cell, the main protein in released (Koplow 2003). The virus replicates in the cytoplasm of the host cell. DNA replication and transcription may start immediately as the virus itself contains enzymes for replication and transcription. It does not rely on the host cell enzymes to begin replication (Koplow 2003). First, the DNA and RNA polymerase are made, along with other transcription ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A study carried out by BREA and AEAT reveals that only in England, construction, demolition and refurbishment activities produce around 33% of all waste ; furthermore, around 380 million tonnes of resources are consumed by the construction industry each year (BRE; AEAT, 2012). The scope of the negative impact the construction industry is having upon the environment through processes such as the acquiring of materials, the procedures undertaken to develop products and their eventual deposition, became a UK government must solve issue. Tony Blair, as a reply to the global scientific consensus of climate change being a result of human activity stated that we can move the debate from whether there is a problem to how to deal with it (HM Government, 2011). Accordingly, the government decided to address this issue by creating a plan to tackle it locally and, eventually, globally. The implementation of new principles and strategies to proceed towards sustainability in documents like Meeting the Energy Challenge: A White Paper on Energy (2007), Securing the Future (2005) and alike, that attempt to drive the industry towards sustainable products, are an evidence of the government s active agenda to address the problem. General considerations about alcohol in the United States The production and sale of alcohol in the US is regulated at a state level, by local legislation, which means that conditions very from state to state. This also means that alcohol can be sold in particular places. For example, in Maryland, alcohol cannot be sold in supermarkets, while in Florida (or in some parts of Florida), beer and wine can be sold in places such as Wal Mart. In other states, the sale of alcoholic beverages is done strictly in liquor stores, so beer, wine and liquor such as whiskey will only be sold in these locations. In California, the sale of alcohol is relatively unrestricted, meaning that alcohol can be sold much easier, in locations ranging from supermarkets (beer and wine, as well as liquor), hypermarkets or gas stations. At the same time, in some states, eighteen of all US states, the state government controls in a monopoly the sale and retail of beer, wine and spirits, which explains some of the restrictions that are applied in terms of location, time of sale etc. What is the relationship between monetary policy and inflation? Though Wormwoodtries his best to excel in every task he is assigned, he usually ends up failing. As a result of Wormwood s failures, Screwtape provides him with helpful advice that comes with criticism. Although Lewis intended for the story to be comical, it should be interpreted as a tragedy. In the beginning of chapter 5, Screwtape is infuriated with Wormwood. Screwtape expected a detailed report from Wormwood on his progress with the patient and instead he received a vague rhapsody because Wormwood was intoxicated. Wormwood is reminded that duty comes before pleasure. This instance is similar to one that Henri Bergson uses in his theory of comedy. Bergson suggest the idea of absentmindedness. He defines this as, when a certain comic effect has its origin in a certain cause, the more natural we regard the cause to be, the more comic shall we find the effect.
