Essay On Self Respect
Crafting an essay on the concept of self-respect can be akin to navigating a labyrinth of
introspection and societal expectations. At its core, the topic demands a delicate balance
between personal reflections and broader cultural perspectives. One must delve into the intricate
layers of self-perception, examining how internal values intersect with external influences.
However, the challenge lies not only in unraveling the complexities of self-respect but also in
articulating these insights in a coherent and compelling manner. The task requires a profound
understanding of human psychology, ethics, and social dynamics. Moreover, it necessitates the
ability to synthesize diverse perspectives, from philosophical treatises to real-life anecdotes, to
offer a comprehensive exploration of the subject.
Yet, perhaps the greatest hurdle in writing about self-respect is the inherent subjectivity of the
experience. What resonates as a profound manifestation of self-worth for one individual may
seem trivial or even inconsequential to another. Therefore, the essayist must tread carefully,
acknowledging the diversity of human experiences while striving to offer universal insights that
transcend individual differences.
In essence, penning an essay on self-respect demands not only intellectual rigor but also
emotional intelligence. It requires the writer to navigate the labyrinthine corridors of the human
psyche with empathy and introspection. Only by carefully weaving together personal narratives,
scholarly research, and cultural analysis can one hope to offer a nuanced exploration of this
fundamental aspect of human existence.

Stereotypes In Friday Night Lights, By Buzz Bissinger
Many movies, tv shows, and books about high school have depicted football as the
main focus. In the majority of these forms of entertainment, the high school football
players are seen as ginormous, ignoramus, fools. Buzz Bissinger portrays these
stereotypes all throughout his book Friday Night Lights. Though these depictions
may be true in some cases, playing American high schoolfootballneither limits
academic success nor future success in life. Bissinger addresses this topic through
two characters; Boobie Miles and Bryan Chavez. Boobie Miles being a stereotypical
unintelligent jock and Bryan Chavez being an academically inclined individual who
is also on the football team.
Boobie Miles is most definitely challenged academically yet football
The Counterculture 2001 A Space Odyssey
The Cinema has became one of America s favorite past times. The artistry and the
technology has captured American audiences, giving films influence over our
culture. The film industry can easily change people s opinions, without much work
Hollywood can make us hate the villains and love the heroes. Through this we see
the power that the cinema industry has grown to have, and the influence it has in our
society. However it is also our society who possess even greater influence over the
filmindustry. It is the audience who dictates what movies should be popular because
we are the reviewers and consumers. We have seen how our society has had the

Lisa and Robert develop a romance, which could seem improbable given the big

The Male Gaze
Is the male gaze still a relevant concept? Using historical and contemporary visual
examples, assess whether the male gaze still exists.
The male gaze is a concept that refers to how visual culture is designed to please a
male viewer by sexually objectifying women. It was first coined by Laura Mulvey, a
British feminist film critic, in her essay Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema
(1975). She argues that Hollywood films use women as erotic objects in order to
provide pleasurable experience for heterosexual male audiences. According to her,
the male gaze can be seen as active and passive roles that satisfy the spectator, who
in our culture is a man, which means a woman is the spectacle. In a world ordered by
sexual imbalance, pleasure ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Women throughout art history have been treated as objects, meant to be looked at.
Great examples of this can be The Birth of Venus by Botticelli (1486) and The
Venus of Urbino by Titan (1583). In history, Venus was a Roman goddess of love,
beauty and sexuality. Women we see in both of these paintings are displayed for
the gaze of men, they are both idealized, with flawless porcelain skin, they are what
men perceive as perfect . Botticelli s Venus has a hesitant body language, yet the
look on her face suggests sexual invitation. She is being styled in a certain way for
the artist, she is one of Botticelli s women . Titan s Venus is lying in bed while
looking back at the viewer which creates a sense of sexual intimacy. Other
paintings that cater to the male gaze are In love by Marcus Stone and Lady seated
at her needlework by Mihaly Munkacsy. In both cases we see men observing
women, who are clearly absorbed with their work. Both of the men are looking at
women as if what they are doing is something sensual, something they do to try to get
men s attention, which completely undervalues women s work, suggesting that
everything a woman does is to please the male gaze.
The male gaze is still very present in today s cinema. Good example of that can be
Hollywood s hit The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), where the main femalecharacter,
Naomi, is treated as nothing more but an aesthetic object to the male characters.
The first time we see her, camera lingers on her body, then we hear one of the male
characters say I d let her give me AIDS . Throughout the film she is constantly
objectified, always presented either naked, in lingerie or tight dresses. She only exists
as Jordan s wife, not as her own person. Her only purpose is to be looked

How Does Soot Affect The Coal Industry
For too long the coal industry has used our atmosphere like a sewer for its airborne
pollution, says a website www.GreenPeace.org. Coal when burned releases harmful
gases, and humans are being affected by this airborne pollution. In the USA there
are more than 40% of people who live in areas with unhealthy levels of air pollution.
Many doctors say inhaling these harmful gases could possibly lead to death. Many
doctors say that inhaling these gases is like giving your lungs a sunburn. The effects
of inhaling these gases have caused premature death, lung damage, and have even
been connected to cause heart attacks.
As we keep using these hazardous resources, the biggest threat to being affected by

Many species of animals are also being killed from coal pollution. Coal produces

The future of our world depends on two things. One is the protection of the children,
as these fossil fuels and non renewable resources are used we will not experience the

With this harmful resource, we are just using it as a dumping ground with these killer

Comparing Knowledge in Descartes Meditations on First Philosophy and Hume s An
Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding,
Rationalists would claim that knowledge comes from reason or ideas, while
empiricists would answer that knowledge is derived from the senses or impressions.
The difference between these two philosophical schools of thought, with respect to
the distinction between ideas and impressions, can be examined in order to determine
how these schools determine the source of knowledge. The distinguishing factor that
determines the perspective on the foundation of knowledge is the concept of the
divine.
Descartes is a prime example of a rationalist. Descartes begins his Meditations on

Once the certainty of Res Cogitans is developed, clear and distinct perceptions are
replaced with clear and distinct ideas. It is these ideas from which Descartes derive
knowledge, including the existence of Res Extensa (corporeal things). Therefore,
Descartes, a rationalist, derives his knowledge from ideas and reason, all of which
stem from an instance of natural light.
The empiricists, however, do not believe in natural light and therefore do not hold
knowledge to be derived from these innate ideas. David Hume is one of these
empiricists. Hume was a scientist and an atheist; his occupation and beliefs
disallowed him from holding innate ideas to be a valid basis for knowledge. In An
Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding, Hume points out a hierarchy that exists
among ideas and impressions: the most lively thought is still inferior to the most
lively impression (Hume: 10). Hume also establishes that for all of his ideas he
can trace them back to impressions, those for things which he has not had
impressions of he cannot have an idea. What never was seen, or heard of, may yet
be conceived: (Hume: 11) A blind man can form no notion of colours; a deaf man of
sounds (Hume: 12).
From these impressions and ideas stem two kinds of knowledge: relations of ideas
and matters of fact. Relation of ideas are a priori and do not need to be

When it comes time to make an important decision, ones personal courage and self
discipline are put to the test and what has been instilled in them from the beginning
of their lives is the determining factor of how the situation will turn out. There are
many things that can go wrong in the process of passing family values on from
generation to generation. If certain values are instilled in a particular family since
the dawn of its existence, and those values are not necessarily the best ones, it is
more than likely going to be considered a perfectly acceptable value and taught to
members of that family to come. When negative family values are taught, it is
common that when someone applies those same values to real world situations, they
will encounter conflict among people and situations that they come across. This is
common with families that are prejudice, racist, sheltered, or just plain ignorant to
modern cultural standards. It is a very sad thing when incorrect or socially
unacceptable values are taught to the youth in a family. For the reason that, to a
young and impressionable mind what is taught to them is the only thing that they
know and it is always considered right. It is not the youth s fault, or the parents fault
for that matter, it is just simply a matter of how a particular family or group of
people adapt and conform to contemporary socially acceptable customs. Sometimes,

Abstract
In this rhetorical analysis, the value of uniqueness and the use of flavors are
expressed in an ad by Dr. Pepper, a well known and popular company. These values
are found within the appeals of logos, pathos, and ethos. It also states the history of
how this soft drink was created, the creator, and the year it was created. Logos is
expressed when the brand states that it contains 23 flavors and also includes an
image of a bottle with the number 23 as well with other phrases. Pathos is used in the

First was logos, a tool which helps the audience to trust a publication based on its
facts. It uses real information to support the use of logic. Next was pathos, which
appeals to the emotions or what people are feeling. It connects with the audience by
showing or interpreting something the audience relates to or shows interest in.
Lastly, ethos is to what extent the audience trusts an author by relying on their word
and reputation. The author s credentials support what they are trying to convey or the
message they are trying to send to the audience about an ad or announcement.
Historical Context
Created, manufactured, and sold as a unique flavor, Dr. Pepper is the oldest in
soft drinks in American history. Charles Alderton, the creator of Dr. Pepper in
1885, was a pharmacist at Morrison s Old Corner Drug Store, in the small town of
Waco, Texas, where he was in charge of giving medication to the people in Waco. In
his free time, he liked to work at the soda fountain where he would serve carbonated
drinks.
His greatest invention came from the idea of the smell of the different kind of fruit
syrups, and the smell of the drug store he worked in. After giving a sample test of
his new drink to the owner of the drug store, and him liking the taste of it, Alderton
gave his invention a greater opportunity to expand by offering it at the soda fountain.
His creation of this soft drink was exceptional, like no other drink, making other soda

As a descendant of Adam and Eve, Noah was both a blameless and righteous man
who faithfully walked alongside the Lord. Unlike the others in his generation, Noah
did not allow the wickedness to enter into his own life, and God sought favor in this.
Genesis 6: 13 reveals the discussion between God to Noah, revealing his plan to
destroy every living thing under the heavens due to the violence that seeps in the
lives of all creations. The Lord instructed Noah to build an ark out of cypress
wood, accommodating the dimensions of forty five feet long, seventy five feet
wide, and forty five feet high. One the construction was completed the Lord
revealed the occupants of the ark. The individuals chosen to accompany Noah
during the flood were his wife, Noah s three sons and their wives, along with a

Character Analysis Essay On The Catcher In The Rye
Holden Caulfield, the protagonist and main character of The Catcher in the Rye by
J.D. Salinger, seems to have many dislikes and much fewer likes about life, as a
whole. In many situations throughout the book, Holden seems to have negative
thoughts about every little thing. From his school, Pencey Prep, to movies or actors;
even to the word grand, Holden seemingly holds a distaste in just about anything that
crosses paths with him. However, further into the novel, it becomes apparent that one
of the causes Holden holds dearest to his heart is to keep the innocence of children
for as long as possible. Holden wants to be the catcher in the rye because one of the
things he loves is young kids and the catcher saves them. Holden didn t seem to care
about much in the world, but near the end kids seemed to be what he adored most.
He cared about them and knew what to do to take care of them. The thingwith kids is,
if they want to grab for the gold ring, you have to let them do it, and not say
anything. If they fall off, they fall off, but it s bad if you say anything to them.

coining of the word by the california school board in 1966 which allowed for
ebonics to be the national language for african americans. Due to this declaration
there has been a stigma tied with the use of ebonics with african americans. This
stigma has been that those who use ebonics are of lower intelligence and associate
with the racial slur of coon .
An example of ebonics would be a speech pattern similar to I is be the best this
useage of the english language was seen as inadequate and dysfunctional because
uneducated slaves had to teach themselves the basics of reading and writing. It
wasn t until years after the civil war that african americans were able to receive a
proper education regarding the english language. However it was to late for the
past generation which had now grown into the working force and had families of
their own. In turn this language became a basis for their children to pursue higher
education and speak like the white folk it was considered white to speak proper
english. In today s time and age it is still considered to speak white in the black
community when an african american user has control over the english language.
However this ties into the need for education and the reasoning that those who use
ebonics were considered to be at the lowest mark
Hein-Rich Spencer s Greatest Invention
Are mistakes key to discoveries yes, because always in human history great
inventions have always been discovered by accident. For example, one day a man
named Percy spencer had helped change our kitchens forever when he brought a
piece of chocolate into a factory and dropped it onto the floor, and after it melted he
had discovered how to make an inventionthat would change the world and help
make cooking easier therefore he had made a company that would help him make
a device that would mimic the effects of the chocolate bar against the factory floor,
but only after 20 years he had finally perfected the effects of the heat against the
chocolate bar on the factory floor and he called it the microwave. And it was the
most useful invention of its time. The man who was first to make a machine who
had helped to make communication easier for everyone and changed the world by

Nature vs Nurture
Nature vs. Nurture
The Nature versus Nurture debate concerns the relative importance of an individual s
innate qualities versus personal experiences in determining or causing differences in
physical and behavioral traits. (Ridley, Matt. What Makes You Who You Are. Time
Magazine. 25 May 2003).
Almost everyone in any related field has an opinion as to which is truly more
important, nature or nurture. The director of a group called the Minnesota Study of
Twins Reared Apart, Thomas Bouchard, believes that 70 percent of a person s
personality is genetic and 30 percent is due to environment. The director of the
Lewisville Twin Study, Adam Matheny, however, says it is 50 50.
In my opinion, both nature and nurture are very important. ... Show more content on

One twin might get cancer while the other is not susceptible, for example. Many
identical twins clearly behave differently as they grow older, and some even grow to
look less alike. Such differences don t have anything to do with the twins identical
DNA, which is like the software of life, but in how genes express themselves. The
differences stem from chemical modifications in the genes over the years. These
effects are the result of chemical exposure, dietary habits, and other environmental
factors, scientists believe. Other studies have shown that the brains of identical twins
look different upon close inspection of the wiring.
Personality is a frequently cited example of a heritable trait that has been studied in
twins and adoptions. Identical twins reared apart are more similar in personality than
randomly selected pairs of people. Likewise, identical twins are more similar than
fraternal twins. Also, biological siblings are more similar in personality than adoptive
siblings. Each suggests that personality is a heritable trait.
At the same time, the influences on a child s development of the environment in
which he or she grows up is also well substantiated, both scientifically and by
common sense. For example, children raised in orphanages can turn out just fine, in
fact many of them marry and have children. It seems not important whether or not
they have families or children, but how those families are
Victory At Vimy Ridge
July 1st, 1916 marks the commencement of a memorable battle in the world s
history: the Battle of the Somme. This eminent battle, as well as its catastrophic
first day is referred to as a symbol of the extravagancy and unfortunate outcome of
Britain s First World War. It was originally arranged to relieve the pressure on the
French at Verdun. The immense count of casualties and deaths during this battle
have totaled to a record of over 1.25 million dead on both sides. Both the Allies and
Central Powers experienced great losses as a result of the poor decisions made on
behalf of the higher commanders. The relation between the total casualties and
ineffective strategies are clearly seen through the outcome of this battle; with a gain

Working Conditions In The Industrial Revolution
The Industrial Revolution is changing and shaping society. An ongoing issue that s
transpiring is that the working conditions in the coal mines are far from acceptable,
over the years the conditions have changed and become more suitable, however
children are still actively working in the mines, lives are being lost. Is it really worth
jeopardising the lives of our children just so we can have coal?
The working conditions in the coal mines have been a ghastly sight over the years,
because of this the health and safety of the workers (children as young as five,
women and men) is horrendous.

Cheating Is Becoming More Common As The Technological
Age...
Cheating has almost become a regular practice in high school as 75% of students
admitted to cheating at least once in high school (ETS) according to one survey.
Cheating in high school typically carries over to higher education where there is
more on the line for being caught and that will eventually carry over to when these
students enter the work force. Cheating for students is becoming more common as
the technological age advances, are students educated on what constitutes cheatings,
has cheating become more mainstream in the American educational system, and is
this a problem with students or the educationsystem itself? According to Webster
Merriam dictionary the word cheat in this situation constitutes as to break a rule or
law usually to gain an advantage at something (cheat), but many students don t feel
like they are actually doing a wrongful act by cheating on homework, test, or other
forms of schoolwork. Some students plagiarize with clear intent of disregarding the
rules but there is a slim few cases where students don t understand simply throwing a
portion of a paragraph don t count as citing that source or information. The educators
also aren t always concise on what is cheating in their curriculum until they have
caught two students red handed. The obvious cheating of looking over the person

Parables In The Gospel Of Luke
Parable
What is a parable?
The parables in the Gospels are Jesus lessons that are intended to bring
understanding and a positive response from His audience to become His disciples.
Jesus audience were crowds of people that sat on the countryside listening to His
storytelling. The parables screen the understanding of Jesus audience. The parables
was a way of determine who really came to understand his teachings or just came
for a miracle. The parables provided teachings on different topics. Several of
Mathew s parables deal with God s judgment of humanity. A number of Luke s are
about issues such as prayer and money. Still others tell what the kingdom of God is
like.

Summary Of The Film V For Vendetta
In the film V for Vendetta directed by James McTeigue, the sequence I close read
was the killing of Sutler, Creedy, and V. This sequence was extremely intense and had
me sitting on the edge of my seat all throughout. Four techniques that were used in
this sequence by McTeigue that made this so consuming were camera angles, camera
shots, camera movement and sound effects.
Firstly, let us take a look at the technique, camera angles. McTeigue uses camera
angles to show us who has the power and more dominance out of the two
characters. When V says to Sutler, At last, we finally meet the camera is
positioned behind Sutler s silhouette on a low angle. Sutler is on his knees, trapped
by two of Creedy s men while V is standing up and has a lot of free space around
him. McTeigue using the low angle as the camera is focused on V speaking shows
us that V has the power and dominance over Sutler in this conversation. Another time
this technique is used is when Creedy is about to shoot Sutler. The camera is
positioned at a low angle, Creedy is looking down and pointing his gun down (to
Sutler who is not in this frame). Not only does Creedy have a gun pointing down
at Sutler that already gives Creedy a lot of power but, for McTeigue to use the low
angle as well makes the shot more intense and it just completely strips Sutler of any
power he had left.
Secondly, an important technique McTeigue also uses in this sequence is camera
shots. Obviously, there was a lot of camera shots used but, I picked out a few that I
thought were quite important in this sequence. The first was an extreme close up
(ECU) used by McTeigue when the camera was focusing on Sutler s eyes just
before Creedy was about to shoot him. The last time we see Sutler before this shot
is him chuckling to himself. So, when McTeigue uses an extreme close up to show
Sutler s eye widening in fear and realisation, it shows that Sutler had just realised
or taken into consideration that he was actually going to die. McTeigue also used
an extreme close up when V puts the Scarlet Carson in Sutler s pocket. V gives
these roses to his victims before they die. It is a symbol of freedom. So, V giving
this to Sutler and McTeigue using an extreme close up to show this
Ethical Issues In The Fantastic Planet
Introduction This essay will discuss the relationship formed in the movie, the
Fantastic Planet. It will also explore the competition and interdependence of the
characters; a personal view of the economies of each species and the final point
will explain some similarities between the movie and real life historical and modern
day events. The Relationship Formed Ethics describes the principles or standards of
human conflict. In the case of the movie, the standards between Draag and Om. In
the movie the viewer is introduced to the Draags, blue alien beings and the Oms, the
humans. Immediately we see some sort of human conflict emerging. Since the
Draags are fairly larger in size than the Oms, the Oms are belittled and treated as pets.

To me it was clear that the Draags were in control of everything. They owned the
Oms. The Oms on the other hand have no choice but to confirm to the ways of the
Draags. They re smaller and have little to offer, nor do they possess any weapons
to fight with. Terr who is an Om, becomes a pet of a Draag girl but soon escapes
from his Draag host and joins a league with the wild Oms who are hidden in an

What can it not do when it is properly applied; and what it might do when basely

Harker mentions to where he travels. He only receives his money in the middle of

Dracula, however, does wield this kind of power in Transylvania. When Harker

the city s webpage, Prosper is committed to being family oriented and providing
every resident an opportunity to experience quality living while maintaining small

The Response to Intervention program came into existence as a result of various

Silhouettes In The 50 s
The 1940 s was a turning point in fashion when the New Look by Christian Dior
was created in 1947. The new silhouette included soft rounded shoulders, was nipped
in the waist, and had a long full skirt. This silhouette along with Christian Dior s tight
skirted silhouette in dresses and suits and the A line look all continued into the 1950
s and remained the three main silhouettes for most of the decade. His three
silhouettes influenced all kinds of attire including prom dresses, casual everyday
wear and even children s clothing. Figure 4 shows my great grandmother and

time because many women did not work but still wanted to remain fashionable in

The Book Thief Empowerment In Book
The Book Thief: Empowerment in Books Liesel Meminger expresses her feelings,
independence, and power through books, whether it is through stealing, reading,
or writing them. Books play a crucial role in the development of Liesel s character
and influences the various decisions she makes. The ability to read and write helps
Liesel discover who she is, and it helps her understand the people as well as the
world around her better. She realizes the corruption of her country and the
unnecessary cruelty towards the Jewish people, as well as how full of hatred the
world contains. Literature shapes Meminger into an extraordinary young woman,
and it conclusively results in her survival in World War II. In the beginning of the
novel, Liesel is illiterate and overall powerless to the people around her. After
enduring the abrupt death of her little brother, Liesel steals her first book, The Grave
Digger s Handbook. In that moment in time, one would believe that the book was
worthless to her since she was unable to comprehend it. On the contrary, the book
gives her a reminder of her brother and that solemn snowy day. This first book acts
as her first step towards the understanding of the world around her, and how
heartless it really is. Even without being able to grasp the supposed purpose of the
book, the book serves a different principle for Liesel, which ignites the long journey
ahead of her. Once Liesel is comfortable in her new home with Rosa and Hans
Hubermann, she finally begins discovering the world of literature with the help of
Hans. She practices through writing on the basement wall and reading with Hans at
the Amper River. Booksare now becoming a prominent part of her life thanks to
Hans. At Christmastime, Hans sells his cigarettes in order to purchase Faust the
Dog and The Lighthouse for Liesel. These books serve the purpose of showing the
importance of family for Liesel. Even though Rosa is extremely stiff to her
daughter, she truly loves her. Hans absolutely adores Liesel, and practically brings
her passion for literature to life. After analyzing her book collection multiple times,
Liesel soon grows tired of her selection. Her need to obtain another book, even if it
was through stealing, was growing

Augustus s Res Gestae And The Juvenile Satire
Throughout both readings, the reader gets two drastically different accounts on how
Rome was under Augustus. Through Augustus s writing he depicts himself as being
a very fair and humble ruler, one who is fair to all gives opportunities to his enemies.
While on the other hand, the Juvenile Satire s depict Rome as a very dark place, with
Augustuss being a horrible ruler and ruining everything good about Rome. Having
these two depictions of Rome during the rule of Augustus is hard to see which one is
truthful. Augustus humbles himself and gives factual evidence along with dates,
while the JuvenalSatire absolutely destroy anything good about Augusts. Taking that
into account the Rome in Augustus Res Gestae would be the closest depiction of
what the real Rome was truly like during this time, this is because the reader cannot
look at the Satires without knowing that the writer truly hated Augustus and therefore
couldn t give an unbiased account on the events occurring during those times. In the
Res Gestae written by Augustus himself the reader can find that many times
throughout the writings that Augusts is trying to keep a historical account of all the
great things he has done, while at the same time staying humble. I rebuilt the Capitol
and the theater of Pompey, each work at enormous cost, without any inscription of
my name. Here Augustus writes about an amazing deed he did, but staying humble
and trying not to make Rome only about him, he rebuilds it and keeps it as it

Hashimoto s disease can also be called chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis or autoimmune
thyroiditis. An autoimmune disease happens when the body s immune system attacks

infection. Hashimoto s disease specifically attacks the thyroid gland, causing
inflammation interfering with the ability to produce thyroid hormones. (http:/

Hashimoto s Disease compared to Graves disease:
Whereas Hashimoto s is an under active or under developed thyroid gland, Graves
disease is the opposite. Graves disease is an immune system disorder that results in
the overproduction of thyroid hormones, better known as hyperthyroidism. Although
a number of disorders may result in hyperthyroidism, Graves disease is a common

What I ve learned:
Living with Hashimoto s has taught me that I need to be very careful in the way
that I treat my body. Healthy diet and exercise is a great way to start taking care of
yourself. Y ou also have to make sure you take your medication as prescribed. I
know first hand how hard it can be if you miss a dose of levothyroxine or if you
take it at the wrong time. Everything in moderation is okay, but when you have a

Essay Unanswered Questions about Welfare Reform
Unanswered Questions about Welfare Reform
Welfare is a means of financial assistant for poverty stricken individuals. Year after
year presidents have attempted to reconstruct the welfare system so it does not act
as a backbone for those who do not want to work, and year after year success
seemed out of reach. That is, until President Bill Clinton thought he had the answer.
He signed the new welfare reform act in August of 1996, vowing to end welfare as
we know it. Terminating a 62 year old federal entitlement, President Clinton put a
limit on how long one can receive federal welfare assistance (Casse 36). Yet, this so
called reform is not that at all. The government doesn t see what happens to ex

The state that was furthest along in its welfare plan and which has received the
most attention for cutting the welfare roles was Wisconsin, but this welfare form
program just went into effect on September 1, 1997 (Telly 8). We ve just implanted
a program and we don t have any results yet, Nan Brien of Wisconsin Council on
Children and Families points out (8). Usually you can celebrate results, not
beginnings. So the declining caseloads that President Clinton spoke of so highly
of are not impressive and whatever they mean, they don t tell us much, if anything,
about the impact of the 1996 reform (Heim 1147). The second problem that drowns
out the welfare reformers chorus is the fact that the government does not know
what happens to people after their assistance is cut off. Some people get penalized
if they can t find a job, and their benefits get cut back because they are not working
or enrolled in the work program that the state offers. This sometimes hurts people
when they are expecting X amount of money to feed their family for the month and
receive significantly less than what they normally would. It s very hard to make your
food stamps last for the whole month or until you find a job, enroll into school, or
some kind of training program. For example, the government uses a line item veto,
which eliminates any method for tracking people after they

they discovered the rupture, but not before significant damage had been done to the

it will undergo significant expenses to replace and appropriately install pipe fittings

The Roaring Twenties And New Technology
1914 1929:
Roaring Twenties
The Roaring Twenties was a turn into a new era which many people considered it to
be a prosperous moment. It was referred to as the Roaring Twenties because of the
social freedoms and new technologies. After the end of post war economic problems,
many people were eager to add some excitement into their lives and technology began
to evolve. Technology and entertainment were 2 main factors that made the lives of
Canadians more interesting. The production of transportation, appliances, music and
communication began to develop. They all changed the lives of Canadians in their
own way. The production of these new inventions led to a decline in unemployment,
an increase in wages and higher sales and profits. The Roaring Twenties was a
significant moment in Canadian History.
A year after the First World War was the acceleration of the development of Canada
.
There was a considerable expansion of industry and agriculture. Canadian railways
were expanded into the west and the foreign demand of raw materials such as
wheat, timber, pulp and paper increased. An important moment during this time was
in 1929 when women were granted the right to be considered at persons , obligating
them to be appointed and elected for political matters such as being judges or
members of the parliament. Emily Murphy and the Famous Five made this possible
and it has impacted the future we live in today greatly. The development of
technology has made our lives easier,
April Raintree Summary
The Story of In Search of April Raintree
Written by Beatrice Mosioner about a young protagonist named April Raintree
and her antagonist sister Cheryl. Even at an early age, April was a kind, loving big
sister to Cheryl. She often took her to the park to play in the summer, and made
snow houses with her in the winter. Even while April and Cheryl were at the
orphanage with the nuns, all April could think about was Cheryl. April always
thought about her mom and dad as well and why they had to be away from them.
Eventually, the girls were placed in separate foster homes and were apart for a long
time. April finally got her wish; she and Cheryl did finally get together as foster
children to the DeRosier family. Unfortunately their being

This questionnaire will utilize close ended questions for several reasons. The close
ended questions enable pre set answers which allows for greater ease of coding and
analyzation of answers while simultaneously taking away any opportunity for
unnecessary or undesired answers to questions. It also adds to higher incidences of
participation in the study because the respondent will not have to take vast amounts
of time to respond to short answer questions which can be daunting for those who
have difficulty reading or writing which is important in regards to seniors who may
have difficulty reading due to poor eyesight or may have problems holding a pen or
pencil due to arthritis. The first eight questions pertain to each participant s personal
information (e.g. age, gender, race, etc.) as well as their lifestyles (e.g. activity level,
employment, etc.). The next question determines whether or not the participant will
answer the next four questions or skip down to question thirteen and fourteen. This
style of questionnaire is referred to as branching questionnaire and allows for the
questionnaire respondent to move through the questions a different way depending
on their answer
Conscription In Canada Research Paper
It is a well known fact that through Canadian history, English and French Canadians
did not get along very well. French and English Canadians had many differences
throughout history, and as time got closer to the 21st century, situations between
these two groups of people got worse and worse. Their main differences, as seen in
the visual component of my CPT, were usually around times of war, when
conscription was a very big topic. However, we cannot forget the post World War II
situations that caused Canadato change forever. Therefore, the top three events that
really caused transformations in relations of French and English Canadians were the
conscription crisis of 1917, the Union Nationale of the 1930s, and the Official

Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau decided to implement a solution to finally
stop the French Canadians and English Canadians from constantly fighting with
each other. Therefore, he developed and passed the Official Languages Act, which
was an act that would finally recognize the equal status of English and French
throughout the federal administration, and ensure that all federal institutions
provide their services in English or French at the customer s choice. This act
allowed for French Canadians to no longer be seen as a minority in Canada and to
finally be recognized for who they are. Having Prime Minister Trudeau work very
hard to pass this act showed French Canadians that the Federal Government had
finally recognized all the injustices directed towards them, and that there was no
longer any need for fighting between French and English Canadians. The
importance of this event is that finally, French Canadians were seen and identified
as actual Canadians , and this act is an apology from the Federal government
towards the French Canadians for all the injustice that had happened to them in the
past. The Official Languages Act was a way to show French Canadians that the
culture of the French was in no danger of disappearing (Patriquin, Canada s language
wars are over ), one of the

Vegetarianism Vs. Vegetarian Diet
The word diet is defined as the kinds of food a person habitually eats. Diets often
vary according to culture, religion, and personal preference. People often use
different diets as a way to manage their weight or improve their overall health, both
vegetarianism and flexitarianism are diets that are commonly adopted in order to
improve health. Vegetarianismis typically practiced as lacto ovo vegetarianism which
means that milk products and eggs may be consumed although meat, fish, and meat
byproducts are not. A flexitarian diet is less easily defined because it consists
mainly of a vegetarian diet and includes only small amounts of meat when necessary.
Both diets are based on either eliminating or reducing meat intake in one s diet.
Vegetarianism/Flexitaritarism diets are effect at reducing the risk of some diseases
and can be used as a way to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight. Vegetarianism
was officially named by the British Vegetarian Society in the 1800s ( History ). Some
anthropologists suggest that early humans were primarily gatherers and that their diet
consisted mainly of plant foods, this theory is supported by the fact that the human
body can function properly without consuming meat. No one specifically developed
the vegetarian diet and a flexitarian is basically vegetarianism with the occasional
consumption of meat. Flexitarianism is a good option for those who want to receive
the health benefits of vegetarianism without completely giving up meat.
La Belle Shipwreck
The La Belle was a French ship that was a part of Robert De La Salle s fleet in an
attempt to colonize in the Mississippi bay. The La Belle wrecked in what is now
Matagorda Bay, where it remained for three hundred and ten years. Discovered by
a state team of archaeologists in 1995, the La Belle shipwreck is now regarded as
one of the century s most important discoveries; La Belle was the ship to change
history while also changing science. The excavation pushed archaeological processes
and technologies to the limits. Even in it s time La Belle was still one of the most
important ships.
In 1684, Robert Cavelier, Sieur De La Salle, or Robert De La Salle, had four ships,
which he planned to use in his voyage to the Mississippi river from France. ... Show

After studying historic accounts and maps that were drawn during 17th century
Spanish expeditions they started their search in the dark waters of Matagorda Bay
where visibility is limited. They used a floating magnetometer sensor to scan for
indications of shipwrecks. During their search they found other shipwrecks, but
not La Belle. (Texas Beyond History 2008.) In 1995, underwater archaeologist

water again where they believed to be a shipwreck. Chuck Meide, a Florida State
University student archaeologist, was the diver who blindly felt around the
bottom of the bay and found what he believed to be a cannon and would later find

Race And Race In Heart Of Darkness
Heart of Darkness is a text which was written during the apartheid era when white
supremacy used to colonise people of colour. It centres mostly around the
protagonist Marlow who is on his journey to Congo. Race is explained by
(colin,2013), as a group of people who share similar physical characteristics such
as colour of skin and hair texture , who are considered as fitting in the same sort, or
the fact of belonging to such a group. Power can be explained as the ability to
control other people. In this essay I am going to discuss the relationship between race
and power in Heart of Darkness.
Each individual has his/her own race. For example, in heart of darkness, there are
Russians, Black Africans and whites. Many people who fear the topic of race
normally ignore the fact that there are different races in life, instead they say there
is only one race which is human race. Such topic are mostly ignored yet they still
have an impact in our daily life. Well, not every white supremacy used to ignore
the case of race even in the past. In (condrad 1902,3) white men see themselves as
more sophisticated and that they have urbanised minds and are educated. Whenever
the race topic arises, people of colour recall how bad they were treated because of
their race. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Risk Factors For Hepatocellular Carcinoma
Risk Factors Major risk factors for hepatocellular carcinoma include infection with
HBV or HCV, alcoholic liver disease, and most probably non alcoholic fatty liver
disease. Less common causes include hereditary hemochromatosis, alpha1 antitrypsin
deficiency, autoimmune hepatitis, some porphyrias, and Wilson s disease, aflatoxin
ingestion, exposure to inorganic arsenic through drinking water (Shamseddine et al.,
2009). The distribution of these risk factors among patients with hepatocellular
carcinoma is highly variable, depending on geographic region and race or ethnic

Propaganda And Bias In The World
Propaganda is the fuel for the bias in the mass and majority of the world by mouth
feeding the public opinions that they should devour and accept as truth without the

influence of the great countries and notorious dictator to command nations not only
in their speeches over the radios and televisions that broadcasted throughout the lands
they governed but also strongly can be seen in retrospect to people of today of the

The History of Oppressive Violence by the Brazilian Military
The Brazilian military has held a history of oppressive violence to control its own
people. These roots can be found in 1889, after an overthrow of Emperor Pedro II.
A series of military intervention followed, with its culmination being the violent
and heavy handed dictatorship between 1964 1985. During this turbulent era, fear
and violence was utilized by the military to control society and legitimize its rule.
Conflict theory may be used to explain this regime. Marx contends that societies
are defined by inequality and conflict is a product of a struggle of power. The year
1888 saw a dramatic shift in the policies of the Empire of Brazil. Princess Isabel
signed the Golden Law in May, effectively abolishing slavery in Brazil. Civilian
and military personel saw this, along with increased loans to the powerful coffee
farmers who held economic, social, and political power in Brazil, as a threat to the
status quo. The National Guard was reorganized and the military received increased
pressure to intervene. On November 15, 1889, military launched a coup of the
monarchy and established Brazil as a Republic. Although the coup d etat was non
violent, it created a climate of military intervention in Brazil. Eventually the military
will step in and instill new governments three more times. In a bid to end polГtica do

What Is The Irony In The Secret Life Of Santiago
For eighty four days, old Santiago has not caught a single fish. At first a young boy,
Manolin, shared his bad fortune, but after the fortieth luckless day, the boy s father
tells his son to go in another boat. From that time on, Santiago works alone. Each
morning he rows his skiff out into the Gulf Stream, where the big fish are. Each
evening he comes home empty handed.
The boy loves the old fisherman and pities him. When Manolin has no money of
his own, he begs or steals to make sure that Santiago has enough to eat and has
fresh baits for his lines. The old man accepts his kindness with a humility that is
like a quiet kind of pride. Over their evening meals of rice or black beans, they talk
about the fish they had caught in luckier times or about American baseball and the
great Joe DiMaggio. At night, alone in his shack, Santiago dreams of lions on the
beaches of Africa, where he had gone on a sailing ship years before. He no longer
dreams of his dead wife. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Fed Ex vs UPS Case Analysis Essay examples

The parcel service industry is made up of four main competitors. These competitors
are UPS, FedEx, Airborne Express, and the U.S. Postal Service. Since 2000,
American consumers have spent more than $50 billion to ship parcels, packages, and
overnight letters. New parcel distribution patterns developed due to the way U.S.
manufacturing companies are operating. The Internet has expanded the reach of
direct marketing, particularly with retail transactions requiring home delivery.
Globalization has also created the need for parcel carriers to expand worldwide.

Manufactures also depended more on the customer, information technology, and the
increase in the use of technology in all parts of the economy. Companies such as
FedEx, UPS, Airborne Express, and USPS shipped parcels at a faster rate and were
more reliable than other rail, motor, and water carriers.
Trends and opportunities of the parcel service industry include globalization, e
commerce, and supply chain management. Internet logistics was FedEx and UPS s
fastest growing business. The internet enabled customers to link directly to retailers
and their manufacturers. In 2001, parcel carriers served almost all of the online
market. They were able to provide information on packages to customers through
tracking systems on the web. This allowed customers to plan ahead and decrease
delays in deliveries. It also allowed for faster transactions and lower communication
costs. Parcel companies created partnerships with large Internet retailers. These
partnerships allowed parcel service companies to expand its overall delivery volume.
Parcel companies improved tracking by implementing several technological
innovations. These included laser scanners and bar codes, state of the art software
programs, satellite and cell phone communication equipment, electronic information
interchanges, and the Internet.
Globalization is another major trend. Since the emergence of the
Persuasive Essay About Dressing Your Children
With the snow on its way, it s time to start thinking about some family fun activities
you can do with your kids in Columbia. There s plenty of activities do when the
snow is falling, like building a snowman, having a fun and friendly snowball fight,
making countless snow angels, sledding, and so much more! However, in areas that
snow and reach bitterly coldtemperatures like Columbia it s important to dress your
kids properly. Whether you have an infant, toddler, or school aged child, you ll want
to ensure they have warm enough clothing so that they can enjoy the snow and avoid
a mid sledding meltdown. If you plan on enjoying the snow and participating in winter
activities with your children follow these simple tips to ensure your child is warm
and enjoying the fun!
Add some layers
Spending most of the day outside, you and your child will be active. Dressing your
child in layers is essential for keeping your child comfortable. Plus, throughout the
day, temperatures can fluctuate. However, you can maintain your child s comfort by
simply adding or removing a layer based on the weather. When the temperatures drop
and the wind chill rises, consider dressing your child with the common three layer
technique in mind:
Base Layer
A base layer is the layer of clothing that sits closest to the skin and is generally
meant to be a form of insulation. This can be a thick long sleeve shirt and
sweatpants or thermal underwear. In addition, part of the base layer is the socks.
You ll want to select a brand of socks that are breathable and that will keep your
kids feet warm throughout the day. Wool is an excellent fiber to use for base layers
both socks and the under clothing and will help keep moisture away.
Middle Layer
The mid layer can be as simple as a hoodie or a sweatshirt. The middle layer is
meant to provide some extra insulation when outside, but also provides enough
comfort to be worn indoors while taking a break to eat lunch or sip delicious hot
chocolate.
Outside Layer
When being active outside, the outer layer is very important for your kids. The
outside layer should consist of good quality snow pants and boots, as well as a
warm winter jacket. The type of outside layers needed can depend on what
Racism And Prejudice By Claudia Rankine
Citizen (2014), by Claudia Rankine, is a book that explores racism and prejudice
that is happening in the United States. Rankine incorporates personal encounters,
reactions, reflections, writing and art pieces, historical events, and the media to
prove the point that racism is still very prominent to this day. For a majority of the
book, Rankine writes short pieces about her personal encounters that deals with
some form of racism, whether it happened to her or if she witnessed racism
happening to other people. Within those short pieces, Rankine refers to herself as
you, because she wants her readers to see what racism looks like in her shoes, even
if the readers have not personally been affected by racism. Throughout the book,
Rankine includes several symbols that are important to her that shows the audience
that those symbols may be small, but they have a huge impact on how people
perceive them. Some of the symbols that Claudia Rankine uses throughout Citizen is
the color line, complexion of skin tone, and angry. What are the significance of each?
When racism was more common in the United States, there was blunt segregation
happening before people s eyes. White people lived in areas with more opportunities,
and better living arrangements, whereas black people were forced to live in lesser
more ghetto parts of town. Although, the color line is not as prominently visible,
there are still insistences that have occurred to this today that proves the color line is

Essay On Self Respect. respect essays for students to copy - How to Write an Essay on Respect

  • 1. Essay On Self Respect Crafting an essay on the concept of self-respect can be akin to navigating a labyrinth of introspection and societal expectations. At its core, the topic demands a delicate balance between personal reflections and broader cultural perspectives. One must delve into the intricate layers of self-perception, examining how internal values intersect with external influences. However, the challenge lies not only in unraveling the complexities of self-respect but also in articulating these insights in a coherent and compelling manner. The task requires a profound understanding of human psychology, ethics, and social dynamics. Moreover, it necessitates the ability to synthesize diverse perspectives, from philosophical treatises to real-life anecdotes, to offer a comprehensive exploration of the subject. Yet, perhaps the greatest hurdle in writing about self-respect is the inherent subjectivity of the experience. What resonates as a profound manifestation of self-worth for one individual may seem trivial or even inconsequential to another. Therefore, the essayist must tread carefully, acknowledging the diversity of human experiences while striving to offer universal insights that transcend individual differences. In essence, penning an essay on self-respect demands not only intellectual rigor but also emotional intelligence. It requires the writer to navigate the labyrinthine corridors of the human psyche with empathy and introspection. Only by carefully weaving together personal narratives, scholarly research, and cultural analysis can one hope to offer a nuanced exploration of this fundamental aspect of human existence. Through flashback, we discover that a final world war with Russia led to a deployment of biological warfare that in turn created a plague. The plague caused by the war wiped out most of humanity except for Lisa and a few kids who have been affected but have not yet mutated. In this film we can see how Lisa and Robert develop a romance, which could seem improbable given the big age difference, between an older man and a younger lady. However since this movie was released during the counterculture era, this could have been seen as an example of going away from the norms of the time. Great examples of this can be The Birth of Venus by Botticelli (1486) and The Venus of Urbino by Titan (1583). In history, Venus was a Roman goddess of love, beauty and sexuality. Women we see in both of these paintings are displayed for the gaze of men, they are both idealized, with flawless porcelain skin, they are what men perceive as perfect . Botticelli s Venus has a hesitant body language, yet the look on her face suggests sexual invitation. She is being styled in a certain way for the artist, she is one of Botticelli s women . Titan s Venus is lying in bed while looking back at the viewer which creates a sense of sexual intimacy. Other paintings that cater to the male gaze are In love by Marcus Stone and Lady seated at her needlework by Mihaly Munkacsy. In both cases we see men observing women, who are clearly absorbed with their work. Both of the men are looking at women as if what they are doing is something sensual, something they do to try to get men s attention, which completely undervalues women s work, suggesting that everything a woman does is to please the male gaze. The male gaze is still very present in today s cinema. Good example of that can be Hollywood s hit The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), where the main femalecharacter, Naomi, is treated as nothing more but an aesthetic object to the male characters. The first time we see her, camera lingers on her body, then we hear one of the male characters say I d let her give me AIDS . Throughout the film she is constantly objectified, always presented either naked, in lingerie or tight dresses. She only exists as Jordan s wife, not as her own person. Her only purpose is to be looked

Comparing Knowledge in Descartes Meditations on First Philosophy and Hume s An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding, Rationalists would claim that knowledge comes from reason or ideas, while empiricists would answer that knowledge is derived from the senses or impressions. The difference between these two philosophical schools of thought, with respect to the distinction between ideas and impressions, can be examined in order to determine how these schools determine the source of knowledge. Once the certainty of Res Cogitans is developed, clear and distinct perceptions are replaced with clear and distinct ideas. It is these ideas from which Descartes derive knowledge, including the existence of Res Extensa (corporeal things). Therefore, Descartes, a rationalist, derives his knowledge from ideas and reason, all of which stem from an instance of natural light. The empiricists, however, do not believe in natural light and therefore do not hold knowledge to be derived from these innate ideas. David Hume is one of these empiricists. Hume was a scientist and an atheist; his occupation and beliefs disallowed him from holding innate ideas to be a valid basis for knowledge. In An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding, Hume points out a hierarchy that exists among ideas and impressions: the most lively thought is still inferior to the most lively impression (Hume: 10). Hume also establishes that for all of his ideas he can trace them back to impressions, those for things which he has not had impressions of he cannot have an idea. What never was seen, or heard of, may yet be conceived: (Hume: 11) A blind man can form no notion of colours; a deaf man of sounds (Hume: 12). Sutler is on his knees, trapped by two of Creedy s men while V is standing up and has a lot of free space around him. McTeigue using the low angle as the camera is focused on V speaking shows us that V has the power and dominance over Sutler in this conversation. Another time this technique is used is when Creedy is about to shoot Sutler. The camera is positioned at a low angle, Creedy is looking down and pointing his gun down (to Sutler who is not in this frame). Not only does Creedy have a gun pointing down at Sutler that already gives Creedy a lot of power but, for McTeigue to use the low angle as well makes the shot more intense and it just completely strips Sutler of any power he had left. Secondly, an important technique McTeigue also uses in this sequence is camera shots. Obviously, there was a lot of camera shots used but, I picked out a few that I thought were quite important in this sequence. The first was an extreme close up (ECU) used by McTeigue when the camera was focusing on Sutler s eyes just before Creedy was about to shoot him. The last time we see Sutler before this shot is him chuckling to himself. So, when McTeigue uses an extreme close up to show Sutler s eye widening in fear and realisation, it shows that Sutler had just realised or taken into consideration that he was actually going to die. McTeigue also used an extreme close up when V puts the Scarlet Carson in Sutler s pocket. V gives these roses to his victims before they die. It is a symbol of freedom. So, V giving this to Sutler and McTeigue using an extreme close up to show this

  • 34. Augustus s Res Gestae And The Juvenile Satire Throughout both readings, the reader gets two drastically different accounts on how Rome was under Augustus. Through Augustus s writing he depicts himself as being a very fair and humble ruler, one who is fair to all gives opportunities to his enemies. While on the other hand, the Juvenile Satire s depict Rome as a very dark place, with Augustuss being a horrible ruler and ruining everything good about Rome. Having these two depictions of Rome during the rule of Augustus is hard to see which one is truthful. Augustus humbles himself and gives factual evidence along with dates, while the JuvenalSatire absolutely destroy anything good about Augusts. Taking that into account the Rome in Augustus Res Gestae would be the closest depiction of what the real Rome was truly like during this time, this is because the reader cannot look at the Satires without knowing that the writer truly hated Augustus and therefore couldn t give an unbiased account on the events occurring during those times. In the Res Gestae written by Augustus himself the reader can find that many times throughout the writings that Augusts is trying to keep a historical account of all the great things he has done, while at the same time staying humble. Year after year presidents have attempted to reconstruct the welfare system so it does not act as a backbone for those who do not want to work, and year after year success seemed out of reach. That is, until President Bill Clinton thought he had the answer. He signed the new welfare reform act in August of 1996, vowing to end welfare as we know it. We ve just implanted a program and we don t have any results yet, Nan Brien of Wisconsin Council on Children and Families points out (8). Usually you can celebrate results, not beginnings. So the declining caseloads that President Clinton spoke of so highly of are not impressive and whatever they mean, they don t tell us much, if anything, about the impact of the 1996 reform (Heim 1147). The second problem that drowns out the welfare reformers chorus is the fact that the government does not know what happens to people after their assistance is cut off. Some people get penalized if they can t find a job, and their benefits get cut back because they are not working or enrolled in the work program that the state offers. This sometimes hurts people when they are expecting X amount of money to feed their family for the month and receive significantly less than what they normally would. It s very hard to make your food stamps last for the whole month or until you find a job, enroll into school, or some kind of training program. For example, the government uses a line item veto, which eliminates any method for tracking people after they

  • 46. Vegetarianism Vs. Vegetarian Diet The word diet is defined as the kinds of food a person habitually eats. Diets often vary according to culture, religion, and personal preference. People often use different diets as a way to manage their weight or improve their overall health, both vegetarianism and flexitarianism are diets that are commonly adopted in order to improve health. Vegetarianismis typically practiced as lacto ovo vegetarianism which means that milk products and eggs may be consumed although meat, fish, and meat byproducts are not. A flexitarian diet is less easily defined because it consists mainly of a vegetarian diet and includes only small amounts of meat when necessary. Both diets are based on either eliminating or reducing meat intake in one s diet. Vegetarianism/Flexitaritarism diets are effect at reducing the risk of some diseases and can be used as a way to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight. Vegetarianism was officially named by the British Vegetarian Society in the 1800s ( History ). Some anthropologists suggest that early humans were primarily gatherers and that their diet consisted mainly of plant foods, this theory is supported by the fact that the human body can function properly without consuming meat. No one specifically developed the vegetarian diet and a flexitarian is basically vegetarianism with the occasional consumption of meat. Flexitarianism is a good option for those who want to receive the health benefits of vegetarianism without completely giving up meat.

  • 49. Race And Race In Heart Of Darkness Heart of Darkness is a text which was written during the apartheid era when white supremacy used to colonise people of colour. It centres mostly around the protagonist Marlow who is on his journey to Congo. Race is explained by (colin,2013), as a group of people who share similar physical characteristics such as colour of skin and hair texture , who are considered as fitting in the same sort, or the fact of belonging to such a group. Such topic are mostly ignored yet they still have an impact in our daily life. Well, not every white supremacy used to ignore the case of race even in the past. These roots can be found in 1889, after an overthrow of Emperor Pedro II. A series of military intervention followed, with its culmination being the violent and heavy handed dictatorship between 1964 1985. During this turbulent era, fear and violence was utilized by the military to control society and legitimize its rule. Conflict theory may be used to explain this regime. Marx contends that societies are defined by inequality and conflict is a product of a struggle of power. The year 1888 saw a dramatic shift in the policies of the Empire of Brazil. Princess Isabel signed the Golden Law in May, effectively abolishing slavery in Brazil. Civilian and military personel saw this, along with increased loans to the powerful coffee farmers who held economic, social, and political power in Brazil, as a threat to the status quo. The National Guard was reorganized and the military received increased pressure to intervene. On November 15, 1889, military launched a coup of the monarchy and established Brazil as a Republic. Although the coup d etat was non violent, it created a climate of military intervention in Brazil. Eventually the military will step in and instill new governments three more times.
