2. Racism In Angie Thomas s The Hate U Give
Angie Thomas novel The Hate U Give is the story of a teenage girl facing racism in the world
around her. Starr Carter lives in Garden Heights, a neighborhood filled with gangs, when one of
her best friends Khalil is shot by the police, she is quick to know he had been killed because of the
racism that exists in our world. Throughout the novel, Starr is constantly trying to show the world
why Khalil died in order to get justice for his death. She does not believe he deserved to die or
the cop who shot Khalil deserves to walk free of the crime he committed. Through different
characters, the author is able to convey the message of one should not form opinions on someone
or something based on stereotypes. Throughout the novel, some characters struggle with judging
people before they know their past. Angie Thomas is able to get this across to readers not only
through Starr, but also characters such as her father Maverick, her friends from school, and even
Officer Cruise, the officer who killed Khalil.
Stereotypes in the novel are one of the main causes for Khalil s death. The officer had killed
Khalil because he had automatically assumed Khalil was a threat to him. Officer Cruise treated
both Khalil and Starr with disrespect at the time of the arrest because they are African American.
When Khalil began to move in order to ask Starr if she was okay, the Officer assumed he was
reaching for a weapon because he had already formed an opinion about Khalil based on his skin
color even

3. Comparison of Billy Elliot and Grease
The musicals Billy Elliot and Grease present both conventional and unconventional representations
of gender throughout. Both musicals also seem to obscure the message of the underlying gender
stereotyping issues by overshadowing them with elements such as music, dance and costume.
Men have been stereotyped as dominant, strong, brave and aggressive. Also there is an image of
men being portrayed as harder workers than women and supposedly the more intelligent gender.
Men are thought to be physically tougher, more aggressive, more rational, better able to handle sex
without love, and more likely to be successful at work by virtue of their greater will to win.
(Nicholson, 1993, 2)
Most often, men have less of an emotional attachment to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

However, the music in Billy Elliot seems to confront the issues within the lyrics and not withdraw
an audience s attention from the problems that are presented within this show.
Billy initiates the music in his life. He has the potential to triumph over his environment. The lyrics
of the soundtrack are also noteworthy, as they imply that Billy is a born dancer. (Lancioni, 2006,
718)
He Could be a Star is a song that is sung in majority by Jackie Elliot about Billy s potential at
becoming a professional dancer.
He could be a star for all we know
We don t know how far he can go . (Billy Elliot Soundtrack, 2000)
Throughout Billy Elliot, Jackie is represented as a strong, aggressive and brave character,
however as he sings this song he seems to lack in these masculine qualities as he loses the
strength to keep up with the strike and appears as weak to his colleagues who may not understand
the depth as to why Jackie must leave the strike and go back to work.
Another element of musical theatre is dance, which is evident in both Grease and Billy Elliot.
One of the most famous dances from Billy Elliot is the angry dance, performed by Billy out of
frustration from constantly being mocked and disregarded because of his love for dancing.
This scene not only expresses Billy s rage, it visually represents his childhood. Billy is blocked by
barriers of gender, class, and

4. Chalcopyrite Synthesis Lab Report
The process of extraction of copper varies depending of what ore, copper is being extracted from.
Chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) is a sulphide ore and it is one the most common ores of copper. The
process of extracting copper from chalcopyrite is a quite complex procedure in which both
physical and chemical processes are involved.
As chalcopyrite is around 0.5% copper and 99.5% unwanted rocky material , the first step to
extract copper from chalcopyrite is to increase the concentration of copper in the ore to high
enough levels by getting rid of as much of the unwanted rocky material . This can be done by a
physical process called froth flotation .
The process of froth flotation is quite simple and requires little energy. The process is as follows:
1.The ore is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A substance is added to the crushed ore. This substance attaches only to the metal compound
particles and gives them a hydrophobic (water repellent) property. For copper, this substance is
often pine oil.
3.The ore is then put into a large bath containing water and a foaming agent. Air is blown inside to
make bubbles.
4.Because the compound s particles are hydrophobic, the bubbles will be able to catch them and
bring them afloat where they can flow out from the bath while the unwanted rocky material stays in
the bath.
5.The ore now contains around 30% copper and it is ready to be smelted. This ore is called
concentrated ore
Once the ore has been concentrated it is put inside a furnace where it is mixed with sand and
oxygen. The temperature inside the furnace is risen up to around 1000oC and oxygen is blown
inside. Due to the intense heat inside the furnace, the following things happen:
пѓ The copper(II) ions in the chalcopyrite are reduced to copper(I) sulphide
пѓ The iron in the chalcopyrite reacts with the sand and it is converted into an iron (II) silicate
slag which floats on the copper (I) sulphide and is discarded.
пѓ Most of the sulphur in the chalcopyrite is converted into sulphur dioxide

than a ford truck, and I m stuck on the right side, just think of it bags piled up so high that I
could maybe see the girl that was sitting next to me. That was just very erratic. I was very
squished but I was still very jubilant about momentum I mean I was just being crushed in a van to
go worship Jesus for a week, you know he sacrificed a lot more things for us than me and some
other people in a tiny/ microscopic van. We finally arrived after an hour of driving. We all crawled

9. Why I Want To Understand The Brain By Anne Sexton
Sexton s poem allowed me to understand what it must feel like to live with a mental illness such
as depression. I was quite frightened to find that Sexton constantly wanted to kill herself. Her
confessional style of poetry allowed me to understand that this type of mental illness is a reality
for people. The way in which Anne Sexton describes her desire for death, allowed me to
understand the power depression held on her mind and body. The need to end her life must have
meant that dying outweighed any need to live. Anne Sexton had two children and I am shocked
she would abandon these two children for an escape from the world. I realised Sexton s drive to
kill herself was greater than the love for her own family. Even though it was selfish of

In the short term, this would be a good trend, but if it continues, it could be a sign that Sample
Company is not keeping a big investment in assets, because not that as the denominator in this ROI
calculation, a low asset figure can be used to help drive up the overall result. Meaning that if this
trend continues, it may be an indication of increased operations rather than improvement in asset
efficiency.
Stock Performance
The common stock value increased 54.8%, from $42/share to $65/share, between 2000 and 2001.
This is an indicate that the market likes what it sees in the performance and the management of
Sample Company. In addition, it paid 1.2% in dividends for the past two years. Another key
indicator, the Price to Earnings Ratio, fell from 12.0 to 10.7. This is not enough to be alarming. In
fact, some investors, myself included, feel that lower Price to Earnings Ratios are not necessarily a
good thing. The reason being that if a company is struggling to pay out large earnings per share, to
make the denominator in the P/E equation large enough to keep the P/E ratio low, then often such
financial pressures can take the attention of the management away from the company s operations
and other important issues, like surviving as a going concern in a tough business climate.
Activity of Sample Company
The activity ratios measure the company s management of asset levels and sales (Marshall, 2002).

12. How Did Ngo Dinh Diem Left Vietnam
Ngo Dinh Diem (1901 1963) was a staunchly against confidant Vietnamese statesman who declined
to band together with Ho Chi Minh after the Franco Vietnamese War. With the support of the
United States government, Diem drove South Vietnam from 1954 to 1963, when he was
slaughtered close by his kin in a military oust.
Ngo Dinh Diem was imagined in Vietnam in 1901. His ancestors had been changed over to
Christianity by Catholic evangelists in the 17th Century. Diem, as past times of his family, was
taught in French Catholic schools. After he graduated he was arranged as an executive for the

over the long haul it was picked that Diem showed the most obvious opportunity to keep South
Vietnam from falling under the control of communism.
Once in power, the Americans discovered that Diem was unwilling to be a puppet ruler. He
persistently rejects their suggestion and settled on decisions that wonder the South Vietnamese
people. A couple tries were made to topple Diem yet regardless of the way that the Americans were
sad with his execution as president, they felt they had no genuine alternative but to support him.
In October, 1955, the South Vietnamese people were asked for that pick between Bo Dai, the past
Emperor of Vietnam, and Diem for the activity of the country. Colonel Edward Lansdale suggested
that Diem should give two vote papers, red for Diem and green for Bao Dai. Lansdale assumed that

13. Sponsors Of Literacy Analysis
In Deborah Brandt s article, Sponsors of Literacy, she defines sponsors as, ... any agents, local or
distant, concrete or abstract, who enable, support, teach, model, as well as recruit, regulate,
suppress, or withhold literacy and gain advantage by it in some way (pp 166). There have been
a few people in my life who have done exactly that; they helped me gain knowledge on many
topics in hopes that I would find it informative and be able to better the world around me. My
father, for one, has been my literary sponsor for the sport of softball. This type of literacy is one
that is mostly for fun, but it also gave me incentive to spend time with my dad. He was the one
who taught me every aspect of the game (how to swing a bat, pitch the ball, and catch a pop fly).
When I wanted to work on hitting, he would bring me to a batting cage and pitch to me for as
long as I wanted. When I was in the mood to pitch, he would take me out in the backyard and
catch for me. At first there was a little bit of a problem with him teaching me softball because he
was used to baseball. Baseball and softball can... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Whether you are the sponsor or the one being sponsored, you gain advantage from this
relationship. When my dad sponsored me, I learned how to have fun and be more social. With
Mrs. Howden, I learned that I loved to read as long as it was something I am interested in. Mrs.
Haskett made me realize I want to be a traveling nurse. When someone sponsors you, you are
given a chance to do something with the information you received. When you get the chance to
sponsor someone else, you are giving them a chance to bring new ideas to the table and to
improve themselves. As Brandt said, Literacy, like land, is a valued commodity in this economy,
a key resource in gaining profit and edge (169). So any time you have the chance to learn from
others, you should keep an open mind, because you never know what you are going to learn from

14. The Negative Effects Of Violence In Television And Mass...
With 59 dead and 527 injured, the Las Vegas shooting earlier this month was one of the deadliest
mass shootings in American history. With no immediately apparent motive, it begs the question in
people as to what might possess a person to go out and commit such a heinous crime. Indeed, the
question has dogged the American populace ever since the invention of the modern mass shooting,
and even before, attached to other senseless violent atrocities. Human brains are wired to look for
causality in meaningless events as a survival mechanism, so they have a tendency to find it in
places where it actually never existed in the first place. This is why violencein television and video
games has come under fire in recent years as their influence expands, despite evidence that such
phony violence does not beget real violence and may, in fact, be beneficial to a person s well being.
Firstly, it should be noted that the studies people often cite when attempting to prove media
violence has negative effects on behavior are flawed and inconsistent. In a review of publications
on the subject conducted by psychologist Jonathan L. Freedman, he found that of the 2,500
publications, there were only 200 pieces of non duplicated research among them, stemming from
places of varying scientific legitimacy. The ways in which many of these studies are conducted can
lead to skewed results in favor of the hypothesis the researchers want to prove. When studying how
violent media consumption affects play

Shakespeare In Love with Queen Elizabeth
Shakespeare In Love dominated the Oscars in 1998 bringing home seven academy awards
including best picture. At Consumnes River College, a film professor argued to his class that
Saving Private Ryan should have won the award. The whole class, which I attended, obediently
agreed. Only after studying Renaissance literature, I realize our mistake. Shakespeare In Love
accurately portrays Renaissance England and the birth of English drama, which is the ancestor of
American motion picture. Its combination of screenplay and acting accurately portrays the
important figures surrounding young Elizabethan drama. However, despite representations of Will
Shakespeare, Kit Marlowe, and Ned Allen, perhaps ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, Viola symbolizes the Queen s courage simply by standing up to the Queen in
argument.
Due to Viola s early established courage and talent, she successfully plays the role of Romeo. This
element of the film further links Viola to the Queen, for Queen Elizabeth successfully plays a
lifetime role as the male monarch. It s noted that In the course of her reign, England became a
nation to rival France and Spain; England s cities became centers of commerce, her navy controlled
the principal routes of trade, and her people pursued lucrative interests in Europe and the New
World. (Jordan 1021) So, their accomplishment of successfully portraying the dominant male role
further links the factual Queen to the fictionalized Viola.
Queen Elizabeth and the character Viola also share the misfortune of experiencing tragic love.
Whereas Viola is forced to end her affair with Shakespeare due to their corresponding class
distinction, the Queen too was forced to end her affair with her love, Duke d Alencon, due to her
status as monarch. She previously promised this course of action in her speech, On Marriage.

17. Comparison Of Zika And Ebola Virus
Over the years man has been confronted with many trials and hurdles, but Zika and Ebola virus
are the definitely the most notable of the modern times. Generally we come up with very clever
solutions to medical problems, after all, we have had many years of experience. Zika is a subtle,
easily transmitted, virus first found in monkeys living in Uganda in 1947. It was then found in
humans in 1952, and spreading to South America starting the largest outbreaks in modern times.
This virus is present in Africa, the Americas, Asia, and the Pacific. Ebola, on the other hand, is a

Zika and Ebola both have taken people by surprise. Eighty percent of the people infected with Zika
do not even develop symptoms. In turn, this halted the awareness of the disease. When the Ebola
outbreak started to spread the usual fierce announcement of the virus was delayed, and even after
the presence of the virus was announced, it had already spread too much. The difference between
the two viruses is the action taken by the countries. Guinea and other Ebola plagued countries,
with the help of international health organizations, took measures to inform and help the public
after an initial delay. This came with obvious effects; Guinea has left the forty two day period
(two Ebola incubation cycles) and entered the ninety two day enhanced surveillance period with
no cases whatsoever. During this period any suspected cases will be immediately handled with
extreme care. In Brazil, however, corruption, poor sewage and water systems, and negligent health
care providers have not helped in the fight against Zika. The rainforests that have been chopped
down in Brazil are just one giant breeding ground for mosquitoes that carry Zika, and this is just
amplifying the spread of the virus. Within the African rainforest, recent periods of drought
alternated with wet seasons spread the virus. After a prolonged period of drought the fruit trees will
stop producing fruit and the animals will grow hungry. When

18. Art Analysis Of The Calling Of St Matthew
This essay will analyze, The Calling of St Matthews, an oil on canvas painting made between the
years of 1599 1600 by the artist, Caravaggio. Descriptive details of this painting will follow,
which will allow an in depth look into the elements and principles of design that are evident in this
Caravaggio s work. The Calling of St Matthew illustrates a religious scene where Jesusinitially
encounters Saint Matthew.
Most striking is the group of well dressed young and old men who have gathered around a table
counting money. One young man has a rapier at his side. Perhaps they are gangsters sitting in a bar
gambling. An upright gentleman in dark attire, punctuated by red sleeves, stands in the
shadows, his cheekbones red and defined. The glint of a halo adorns him and provides religious
iconography. Jesus points his hand at a bearded gentleman sitting amongst his friends, Saint
Matthew. Sunlight cuts the room in half and catches Matthew s face. He looks both surprised
and guilty, but the pointing leaves Matthew confused, so he points to himself as if to say, Oh,
are you looking for me? On the far left of the table, a young accountant is absorbed in counting
his coins; an old man in spectacles joins his side. A boy in yellow with a prepubescent face,
looks upon Jesus with an air of Who is this fellow? An old man with a cane, points his hand too at
Matthew as if to question, Are you sure he is a Saint? The focal point bounces between Jesus and
Matthew; his gaze and the

21. Descriptive Essay About A Museum
On September 10 I decided to go to the Hirshhorn museum and sculpture garden located in the
national mall in Washington DC. I went along with my family because I would have been by
myself on this amazing adventure. The museum was originally endowed through the 1960s with
the lasting art collection of Joseph H. Hirshhorn. He expanded his collection of other states such as
New York city and Connecticut with extensive area for sculpture. In 1962 Joseph Hirshhorn s
paintings circulated Italy, Israel, Canada, and California state. The building itself is a three floor
museum, an open cylinder elevated on four massive legs, with a large fountain occupying the
central courtyard.
The Hirshhorn museum and sculpture garden was conceived as the united states museum of modern

22. Effects Of Residential Schools In Canada
Residential schools were a place where thousands of Indigenous children would go to learn but
instead get abused very badly. Residential schools existed about a hundred years ago. These tragic
schools were established because European people wanted the Indigenous people of Canada to be
assimilated into Euro Canadian. The European people thought that their civilization was the
greatest human achievement. A lot of residential schools opened within Canada s provinces. Life at
residential schools was very cruel because the students got limited time to learn and more time to do
exhausting chores. The children also got brutally abused for various things including if they offend
the nuns and priests working in the schools. By the time the children had finished attending the
residential schools they had almost forgotten everything about their cultureand traditions.
Residential schools treated children very poorly which caused some long lasting effects that still
impact Indigenous people today. There were a lot of residential schools in Canada and there were a
variety of reasons why and how these schools had opened. European settlers thought that the first
habitants of Canada (the Indigenous people) were ignorant, and like children they needed guidance.
The first prime minister of Canada Sir John A. McDonald commissioned a journalist and politician
Nicholas Flood Davin to study industrial schools, for the indigenous children, in the United States.

combination of images making a loud screeching sound without the sound accompaniment. Visual
scream is a form of silent shouting it could be done when someone is fearful, anxious, desperate,

Deaf people do make natural sounds when they sign especially when they are emphasizing a
point or expressing intense emotions. There are some deaf people who use certain sounds to
communicate that are understood perfectly by their friends and family. Aristotle is a Greek
philosopher that labeled deaf individuals as being dumb because he believed that they were not
able to learn or reason which is completely wrong. Deaf individuals go through a variety of

24. The Allisons In The Summer People By Shirley Jackson
The prompt I have chosen is, In the story The Summer People, The Allisons believe that the
locals (the Country People) are harassing them because of their decision to stay at the cottage
past Labor Day. Do you believe the locals are actually doing this or do you believe the Allisons
are simply paranoid and imagining this? Please respond in a concise, well written three paragraph
essay with specific examples and textual evidence from the text to support your answer.
In Shirley Jackson s short story, The SummerPeople the Allisons decided to stay at their summer
cottage past labor day. This decision, however may not have been for the best. After making this
decision the Allisons began to become paranoid as things started to not go their way. First of all
the townspeople began to question them as to why they wanted to stay. They informed them that
no one had ever stayed past Labor Day. The Allisons also had to deal with the fact they could no
longer buy kerosene or have their groceries delivered as they had during the summer months. They
also received an interesting letter from their son that left them feeling confused and a bit concerned
because it did not sound like their son s writing. Lastly they had things in their house that were
braking such as their phone. Their car also had somehow broken and was no longer functioning. All
of these occurrences startled the Allison. They couldn t understand how they had been able to live
so peacefully in their cottage all summer

Abortion.
The tittle of the article I will be analyzing is republicans seek to put abortion on the front burner
in 2016 . The article was published in U.S. News and World Report, written by Tierney Sneed.
Abortion is a never ending debate, it is one of the most common medical procedures performed in
the United States each year. Abortionis also one of the most debated topics of all time, it is a never
ending debate of whether it should be legal for women to terminate pregnancy. Some people are
against abortion while others are for it. people that are against abortion also known as pro life

While Americans long have been split on the general question of abortion though a majority do
believe it should be legal in at least some circumstances, a number of polls show that a majority
of voters oppose abortion after 20 weeks (Sneed). The republicans have proposed a bill that bans
abortion after twenty weeks, if a person were to have an abortion after this time period it will be
considered illegal and there will be consequences. If a woman was raped and got pregnant if she
does not wish to have the child according to the new law being proposed, that said woman has to
report the rape to the police and then she can proceed with the abortion. As stated by the article,
Abortion rights supporters counter with polling that shows voters are more supportive of
abortions after 20 weeks in cases of fetal abnormalities (Sneed). In some extreme cases a few
people believe that abortion should be allowed after the twenty week time period has passed, for
instance in situations where it s not safe for the fetus and or the mother to continue with the
pregnancy, or if the baby will have some sort of birth defects. All republican presidential candidates
and those considering to join the presidential candidate race are all supporting the twenty week
abortion ban. Americans have been clear that they do not want politicians to interfere with their
health care decisions. Meanwhile

26. The Prince Of Machiavelli s Prince
When evaluating the political leaders in modern times there is one leader that wields his power the
most like Niccolo Machiavelli s Prince, from his book The Prince, that leader is President Vladimir
Putin of the Russian Federation. Although, Putin does not hold the title of Prince, he has held
influential positions throughout the years, i.e. Prime Minister and Acting President, that hold
power similar to the Prince. Every position that Putin has held in Russia he has acted as if he were
a Prince. Putin has held such all consuming control and influence over Russia that some would say
that Putin is the state , a position that Machiavelli strongly suggest that all Princes should have.
Although, there are infinite examples showing Putin acting similar to Machiavelli s Prince
throughout the years, the current interaction between Syria and Russia exemplifies Putin s
similarity to Machiavelli s Prince. In the interaction between Russia and Syria, Putin mostly
resembles the trait of the Prince that Machiavelli describe in chapters 14, 18, and 21 In chapter 14
of Machiavelli s The Prince Machiavelli explains how a prince should act when dealing with
military affairs. Machiavelli says that the Prince should be the head of the military, the Prince
should know all things military, and the Prince should always be pursuing military advances
(Machiavelli Chapter 14). Machiavelli says that between an armed and unarmed man, the armed
man will not follow the demands of an unarmed man, but

The business model is a design for a successful operation in business, identifying revenue sources,
customer base, product and details of financing. It describes the method of how an organization or
company creates, deliver and capture values in economics, social and cultural contexts. The
business model may also be used by the company to generate revenue and make profits from the
operations. The module, therefore, includes the components and functions of a business.
Large scale change
Short term plans There are several factors that should be considered before starting a business.
These factors could be personal, social, environmental, cultural among others. Some of these factors
include changing one s standard of living, start up cost among other factors. The financial state of
the company must be considered before starting a business or expanding it to other places. At this
stage, one considers business loans from financial institutions. Such institutions could be banks,
finance brokers and other loan brokers putting into consideration there different interest rates. For
the business to succeed there must be a plan as to what business of instance a franchise, buying
into an existing business or starting a business from the bottom. Expanding business in some new
areas always requires good research and proper design making. In this case, for instance opening a

Even though Crime and Punishment and The Stranger were published almost one century apart,
both novels depict many common themes with similar characterizations that contribute greatly to
the themes and objectives of the works. Crime and Punishment s, Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov
and The Stranger s Meursault, each share stoic personalities, thoughts, and experiences that mold
the themes of criminality and guilt, morality, love, and religion; because of these significant

Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov murdered his landlady and her sister. His initial motive was for
the acquisition of money and jewels, and he came to the conclusion that his land lady was a

the question of whether murder is ever okay, even if the person is horrible. Because of Raskolnikov
internal conflict with the murders, the reader acquires sympathy for Raskolnikov an ax murder and

crimes, legal crimes, or in many cases both. Raskolnikov committed the ultimate heinous crime and

1. What has created the need for additional finance by AMT since 1983? The need for additional
financing is a result of multiple factors that placed intense pressure on available cash. The first
factor is the extraordinary growth AMT has experienced the last few years with an annual sales
growth rate of 52.88%. The extreme growth rate in sales was accompanied with heavy spending on
research and development along with rapid expansion in the company s sales force and other
marketing expenditures. What made matters worse is the company has incurred operating losses,

Accounts Payable Days and Accrued Expenses also play a critical role. Days Payable is set at 50
while Accrued Expenses is assumed to be 5% of Sales. Cash as a percent of sales is set at 7.5%.
Going forward, and assuming 7.5% ratio, which is very similar to the industry upper quartile in
1985, cash balances at AMT will remains solid going forward. Note that the industry s cash to
sales ratio is not given directly but can be deducted by taking the Cash to Assets ratio of 16.3%
(1985) and Assets to Sales ratio of 45.3% (Upper Quartile in 1985). Reshuffling these figures
yields the industry s Cash to Sales of 7.4%. All these assumptions about net working capital result
in tremendous need for external financing over the next several years as mentioned earlier. Annual
Sales growth is expected to be at high rate 30% over the next 5 years, which puts tremendous
pressure on cash. Poor management of working capital will unnecessarily tie up cash, thus
requiring external financing from banks such as Western National Bank. Looking at cash to sales
ratio, the historical trend for AMT is very much disturbing with the last two years having negative
cash balances. With the 7.5% ratio of cash to net sales, cash balances, when managed efficiently,
will remain at healthy levels over the next 5 years. The above discussion shows that high growth in
sales, which is typically accompanied with high growth in working capital exerts tremendous

Official statistics show that young black males are over represented at every stage within the

The ringing begins to signal a new task that Melissa McCarthy must take on. The audience
already knows that McCarthy will fail at her eco warrior challenges because of her previous
attempts, but the ringing of the cell phone symbolizes another example of how challenging
environmental conservation is. Eventually, the audience begins to understand the foreshadowing
element of the text. For every issue that she is tasked with saving, she carries a sign that says,

her in it, down. As humorous as it is, one thing is becoming very apparent, saving the environment is

45. Armed Conflict
Armed Conflict
Several similarities exist between the conflict incurred by European settlers with Native
Americans in the depictions of Inca, Garcilaso de la Vega s La Florida del Inca, and Gaspar
Perez de Villagra s Historia de la Nueva Mexico. Excerpts from both works can be found in the

Reader: Five Centuries of an American Literary Tradition from Cabeza de Vaca to Oscar Hijuelos.
In both narratives, the authors chronicle Spaniards unlawful dispossession of territory that was
previously inhabited by Native Americans. Quite naturally, these natives resisted this early form of
larceny, which oftentimes resulted in an armed conflict between the two disparate groups.
However, it is fairly apparent that both authors viewed this conflict and the appropriation of the
Native Americans land as largely religious matter, which was justified by the sake of Christianity.
The narratives are at variance predominantly in their depiction of the natives during this conflict,
however. Whereas de Villagra s depiction is decidedly less concerned with these natives and their
point of view, Vega frequently takes pains to portray the humanity and dignity of the Native
Americans encountered by the Spanish in Florida. The author s proclivity to do so is exemplified
by his description of the fate of Juan Ortiz, a Spaniard who was captured by Native Americans in
Florida. To illustrate the aggressive, hostile
