Sternocleidomastoid
The sternocleidomastoid are muscles that are considered accessory. They are active for inhalation
when needs increase or during high lung volumes as in hyperinflation. These muscles pull the
sternum up and increase the size of the upper rib cage in the AP dimension, sometimes taught as
pump handle elevation. These accessory muscles are affected by the position of the diaphragm and
changes in the ZOA.10Kyndy The diaphragm displaces the abdomen and the rib cage equally
during quiet breathing. If the resting tone in the oblique abdominals is insufficient, more than half
of the expansion would go into abdominal expansion allowing for superior migration of the anterior
aspect of the rib cage. This would decrease the ZOA, change the muscle lengths... Show more

Weakness in the abdominals can have a snowball effect on posture and will be discussed later.1
Like the diaphragm, the transversus abdominis modulates its activity for both postural and
respiratory functions, unlike the other abdominal muscles. It is not active during quite breathing
but becomes active as the demands for expiration increase. Its EMG activity is therefore out of
phase with EMG activity by the diaphragm. 8,11Hodges/Gandevia 2000 and Hodges/Gandevia
/Richardson Various studies have shown that the diaphragm and the transversus abdominis
simultaneously contract prior to movements in the extremities. Hodges et al demonstrated this co
activation 20ms prior to the activation of the deltoid when the subject was asked to move an arm
into flexion.8 Hodges/Gandevia/Richardson. Hodges monitored the diaphragm by measuring the
length of the ZOA because it+ is closely associated with the length of the diaphragm. He believed
that the diaphragm+ was contributing to postural stability by, maintaining the hoop like geometry
of the abdominal wall.Hodges19 Vostatek stated that the diaphragm was contracting in order to
provide abdominal pressure for stabilization of the spine. He also stated that the ribs needed to stay
down and only expand out to the sides during inhalation in order to maintain

Feminist Spirituality and Goddess Religion in the United...
Thousands of years ago, the Goddess was viewed as an autonomous entity worthy of respect
from men and women alike. Because of societal changes caused by Eastern influence, a
patriarchical system conquered all aspects of life including religion. Today, the loss of a strong
female presence in Judeo Christian beliefs has prompted believers to look to other sources that
celebrate the role of women. Goddess religion and feminist spirituality have increasingly been
embraced by men and women as an alternative to the patriarchy found in traditional biblical
religion. Within a few thousand years the first recognizable human society developed worship of
the Great Goddess or Great Mother. For these people, deity was female. The importance... Show

It has been referred to as eco feminism to reflect this increased emphasis. This stems from the
Wiccan ideology that people have a unique responsibility toward the environment because of our
ability to make conscious choices (Corbett 292). Goddess worship broadened to include African,
Asian, and Native American ideals beyond the classic Wiccan deities. It became politically
correct by beginning to include gays and lesbians (formerly neglected with the emphasis on male
female fertility) as well as the ecological movement and an openness to people of color and other
minorities. Now considered the fastest growing religion in America by some scholars, neo Pagans
were represented at the World Council of Religions in 1993. Despite the spread of feminist and
goddess belief, many witches still face discrimination because of their faith. People outside the neo
Pagan community still often confuse Wicca with Satanism, feeling that witchcraft is not a valid
religion and should not be afforded the same protections as more mainstream , consensus religions.
However, Wicca and other goddess religions are not Satanistic. Satanism focuses on the Christian
idea of the devil, whereas these spiritualities predate Christianity and have no link to those beliefs
(Corbett 292). Another common misconception is that witches cast spells in order to hurtothers for

Essay On The Movie Goodfellas
For a second I thought I was dead, but when I heard all the noise I knew they were cops. Only
cops talked that way. If they had been wiseguys, I wouldn t have heard a thing. I would have
been dead ( Goodfellas 00:50:47 59). This is something that Henry Hill said when he is caught
by the police. Before this happened, Henry is trying to get some drugs on an airplane. There
were many events that lead up to Henry being detained by the police; he tried selling guns to
someone, he made dinner for his friends and family, and then he made a visit to his mistress.
While Henry is driving to each place, he is troubled by a helicopter that was following him.
Goodfellasis a film that was released in 1990, and the movie was directed by Martin Scorsese.
The movie is a popular one by all of the awards that it achieved. It is also based on a true story. The
visual elements that are used in this movie affect how the viewers see it. Throughout the movie, the
director uses music, camera angles, and lighting to contribute to the overall effect of the movie.
To start, the movie is centered around the character Henry Hill. Henry Hill is a gangster, and he
wanted to be one ever since he was a kid. He got a job working with the local gangsters as soon
as possible. He kept this away from his parents because he knew that they would not like it. Henry
eventually met with the people he would work with, and they were Tommy DeVito and Jimmy
Conway. The film progresses by showing all of the events that

Of Syria and Civil Wars
Virinder Kaur POLS 202 01: International Relations Reaction Paper #1: Of Syrian Wars and US
Foreign Policies Due: October 4, 2012 Modern Syria first gained its independence in 1946,
following many years of violent strife. Before this, the state had been under a French Mandate
and had suffered under a conditional (or more aptly, false) independence, wherein the French
State held veto power over any potential laws introduced by the Syrian people (US Dept. of
State). In 1970, the Baath party came into political power in Syria in yet another bloody coup d
Г©tat, with Minister of Defense, Hafiz al Assad, taking up the mantle of President (US Dept. of
State). He would remain in power up until his death in the year 2000. This would... Show more

Foreign intervention in the Syrian Civil War will only result in a high price to be paid, mainly the
US loss of support on the international front as well as the financial expenses that the US would
incur if involved militarily. Such civil wars and intrastate conflicts between rebel groups and the
government can be resolved through diplomatic negotiations that can avoid these expenses
(Frieden). The US is not financially secure enough to engage in yet another bloody conflict in the
Middle East, particularly one as convoluted as the one in Syria. The usage of the word convoluted
is significant in that it remains uncertain who the non FSA and who the actual leaders of the
rebellion are. According to Frieden, it is difficult to gather information about who is a part of these
militant groups because they are covert and because terrorist groups have incentives to exaggerate.
Furthermore, should that question and the identities of the FSA be resolved, how would we
distinguish the innocent from the terrorists? Both important actors in these uprisings, the Syrian
government, and the Free Syrian Army and other rebel fighters, have participated in what may be
considered international war crimes that have resulted in a multitude of civilian deaths. The

Grand Nursing Theorist
Grand Nursing Theorist Assignment # 2 Grand Nursing Theorist Assignment # 2 Descriptive
Analysis For this assignment, I chose to study grand nursing theorist Dorothy Orem and the
nursing concept she introduced, the self care deficit theory (also known as the Orem model of
nursing). I chose to study Dorothy Orem because she is well known in Indiana, the state in
which I reside. Orem s grand nursing theory was developed between 1959 and 2001...[and] is
particularly used in rehabilitation and primary care settings where the patient is encouraged to be
as independent as possible (Orem amp; Taylor, 2011). Background of Theorist Dorothy Orem was
born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1914. She received her diploma in nursing in 1934 from... Show

The self care deficit theory works toward Orem s goal of improving the quality of nursing in
general hospitals in her state. The model interrelates concepts in such a way as to create a
different way of looking at a particular phenomenon. The theory is relatively simple, but
generalizable to apply to a wide variety of patents. It can be used by nurses to guide and improve
practice (Dennis, 1997). Testability In testing Orem s theory, other nurses have asked, Is this
theory compatible with standards of nursing care and nursing practice today? Orem s theory has
been applied and tested in many clinical areas of nursing. Nursing Care plans are created from key
parts of the theory and identify patient goals and the nursing interventions to achieve those goals.
Orem s self care deficit theory uses three systems to show how nursing care can be implemented to
meet self care needs of patients: wholly compensatory, partial compensatory, and health education
(McEwen, amp; Wills,2011). Futher more, there is supportive evidence that the theory has been
used to develop nursing research and education. Orem s model of theory is used to develop nursing
curriculum in numerous universities, colleges, and schools of nursing all over the country. It has
also added to nursing knowledge, has created new hypothesis in nursing through research, and
Orem s self care theory has had numerous research studies conducted on her

Concert Review
I attended this concert at CU Denver s King Center, Concert Hall. Although the architectural design
and surrounding did not attest to much artistic creativity, the actual concert was better than my
expectations. I did have lower expectations because it was presented by students instead of
professional musicians or dancers as in my last concert review. The ensemble, a collaborative
outcome from MSU Denver and other dance/cultural musicgroups from denver, was actually a mix
of African and Indian/East Asian music and dance. The two teams alternated between each other
giving the audience a great deal of contrast of movement and sound. My favorite were the second
and fifth performances, African and Indian respectively.
The second performance by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They presented a story of a goddess teasing a boy with a magical ball, then throwing it into a
pond where a monster is asleep. The boy then awakens this monster trying to reach the ball. The
story is meant to encourage people to face their fears and fight for what they want. I liked how they
used the same movements when they were describing the story before starting their performance
which they later used during the dance. For example, one of the dancers showed the same throwing
movement which she later used in the performance. The dance was accompanied by an Indian
chant like song over the speakers. It had the same simplistic nature as the African music discussed
above which I again noticed that it put the focus on the dancers. They music and movement was
much slower and calmer than the Africans, which makes sense when seen in light of the Eastern
Asian spiritual philosophy of

The Root Of Happiness In American Culture
Money seems to be the root of happiness in the American culture. Without money, Americans are
unhappy and discontent with their lives. We are a materialistic breed, meaning we are prone to
expecting money to be the source of our happiness. Although there are several instances where
money is not the direct source of happiness, most of the time it has a large affect on a person s
level of happiness. Although money seems to be the cause of happiness in most cases, it is not.
Money, in today s world is almost necessary to achieve happiness, but not in all of society. Money
cannot buy appreciation, but it does go a long way when talking about a dollar amount or even
what you have. Sure, appreciation will not buy you nice things. The things you have, value, and
love cannot be overvalued by money or expensive things. Even if you have a gigantic amount of
money with no appreciation, you will be miserable.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Time can be spent however you would like when you have money. For example, if you are not in
pursuit of mney, you might not work. You may spend time at one of your favorite NFL team s
football game, take up a new hobby, or take a vacation to an exotic land far away. If you do not
work you have endless amounts of time of your hands to do whatever you so choose. Money can
help fund the idea of happiness by allowing a person to purchase things to do hobbies, go places,
or even attend events that will fill the void in their life. Doing your favorite things will help you
achieve the ulimate goal of happiness. In today s society, money can buy you almost everything

Dive Mask Research Paper
SCUBA DIVING GEAR 101: The Basics As much as we, humans, would like to swim and dive
in open waters without any form of protection and aid, our anatomy just isn t perfectly designed
to handle underwater conditions for long amounts of time. This is where SCUBA Diving gear
comes in. SCUBA Diving gear allows us to see, breathe, swim and stay warm underwater. To
beginners, this stuff might look like it came from a sci fi alien invasion movie, so we ll discuss
each one to help you understand. The Dive Mask. This piece of equipment protects your eyes
from sea salt and other nasty sea stuff. But more importantly, the dive mask lets you ogle at the
beauty of the underwater world! The dive mask separates your eyes (and sometimes nose) from
water and creates an air pocket to let you see clearly underwater. The mask is fastened on the
diver s face because of something called elastomer skirt , but we don t have to worry about that
yet! All it means is that the water can t get through and your mask won t suddenly come off. The
Snorkel. It s like a straw, but instead of sucking water or beverage, we actually use this to breathe
through our mouths. The snorkel allows us to breathe while facing down when underwater. Some
models are even designed to allow us to expel the water that somehow gets in there. It is usually
used for short and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because we don t have gills, we have to rely on the regulator to breathe underwater. The regulator
is called as such because it regulates the amount of air you receive from the SCUBA tank every
time you inhale. It is a little similar to the snorkel in that it allows you to breathe underwater and
it has a mouthpiece. However, the regulator is connected to the SCUBA tank and will allow you
to stay underwater for much longer. The octopus, on the other hand, is not a pet you can take with
you when you go diving (although I wish I could). It is a backup regulator, in case something goes

Cold War Manderin Essay
The book, Cold War Mandarin Ngo Dinh Diem and the Origins of America s War in Vietnam
1950 1963, by Seth Jacobs is a comprehensive retelling of the rise and fall of Ngo Dinh Diem s
government in South Vietnam. In that retelling Jacob focuses on the major events that took place
in Vietnam as well as showed how America backed a leader that did nothing to booster his nation
and led America into one of the worst wars in its history. The Diem regime was a corrupt and
tyrannical government that used the United States fears of communism to push its own goals that
ultimately led to its own demise. Jacob viewed the escalation of America s involvement in Vietnam
as the following, The nine year experiment that ended when Diem died was... Show more content on

Diem stood at odds with Ho Chi Minh who was, eager to expand his base of support, Ho reached
out to anti communist nationalists: he especially wanted to attract Vietnam s Catholic minority, and
understood that the presence of a predominant Catholic in his first coalition cabinet would go a
long way to accomplish this goal (22). Diem refused to work with the Viet Minh and upon breaking
communications with them would then work organize an anti Viet Minh political party.
Diem was very much a nationalist, but not communist, and this is what drew the Americans to
Diem. The need had arisen to replace the Bao Dai emperorship, for in the eyes of many Vietnamese
it was a sham and the only other alternative was that of the communists and Ho Chi Minh. Diem
understood this and he, insisted that France s Bao Dai solution was all but handing Indochina to the
Viet Minh. Only a Vietnamese leader who had not collaborated with either the French or
Communists could succeed in forming a government to rival that of Ho (28). His arguments of
Vietnamese nationalism made sense to many political figures in Washington, thus putting him
further in the front running for American support. Diem also secured further support from his
Catholic faith, which put him in good with many influential figures in America, such as Cardinal
Spellman who was very influential in right wing political circles. Faith was a very strong motivator

Symbolism In The Black Cat
In the short tale The Black Cat, Edgar Allen Poe expresses his hate and love for cats. With
twisting words and mystical views, the tale takes place in the 1840 s. Within this classic
American Literature Gothic tale, symbolism is depicted throughout with many plot twists the
story is told. While The Black Cat was written to achieve an effect of shocking insanity in this
time period it did just that. In this first person narrative the narrator tells of the readers of his
decline from sanity and madness, all because of an obsession with two or maybe one black cat.
This short story easily achieved the effect and use of symbolism. In this tale the use of
symbolizes are represented by the setting, the cat or cats, the house and his wife, all of which are
a great representation of Edgar Allen Poe s imaginary and life. In the tale the setting was a sign of
symbolism. Poe represented this in the plot development with a diverse word choice, and detailed
character development. In most cases, the setting is usually indelible to a story, but The Black Cat
relies little on this element. Poe used detailed character development so the reader begins to
empathize with the characters. With just enough character information given out at the time of
the horrific event the reader will feel connected. This tale could have occurred anywhere and can
be placed in any era. This makes the setting the weakest element of The Black Cat. Poe does not
say a certain location of where it takes place leaving the reader to wonder. The most obvious of
symbolic references in this story is the first and the second cat that arrives in the tale and the
name chosen, Pluto. Pluto leads his owner down the path toward insanity and loss of reason
(Lombardi, Esther). As Poe states in the following quote Pluto is his best friend, why would he
have killed them? Pluto this was the cat s name was my favorite pet and playmate. I alone fed
him, and he attended me wherever I went about the house. It was even with difficulty that I could
prevent him from following me through the streets (Edgar Allen Poe). Could the man in the tale
have been a drunken fool, or suffered for a psychotic illness. If you love an animal that much a

Landscape Of Africville Analysis
Through exploring everyday life, geography is an essential discipline that is a central part of our
understandings of the world around us. An important part of geography deals with the relationship
between human activity and the physical aspects of where this activity takes place (Bryan, 1958). It
is important to then consider that these physical aspects can often be viewed as landscapes within
our society. The concept of landscape plays an important part within geographyand this is a term
that has been associated with a way of seeing the natural world (Cosgrove, 1984). From a
geographical perspective, it is a concept embedded with visual aspects and appearance but also
composed of structure and functions. Although landscapes assist individuals... Show more content

Examining Sherene Razack s (2002) term, a white settler society , we are able to gain an
understanding that the province of Nova Scotia took part in being a white settler society in
relation to the Africville community. According to Razack (2002), aspects of a white settler
society take place when there is a racial hierarchy present and spaces are organized to maintain
unequal social relations. The landscape of this community was structured in this way because
the community was predominately of black individuals and therefore the inhabitants were not
regarded as being an important part of the city. This can be demonstrated through the ways in
which the community of Africville was treated by the government of Nova Scotia. For instance,
during the time that Africville was present, this community was denied of essential services in
which Nelson (2000) explains, requests for water lines and sewerage which would bring
sanitation and quality of life closer to the standards for the rest of the city were refused. Police
and fire protection and garbage collection on par with such services received by the rest of
Halifax were denied. Living conditions were ironically described by city officials as intolerable
and unsanitary (p. 166). Thus, the landscape of Africville was associated with being regarded as a
slum within the society of Nova Scotia. A slum is referred to as filthy, foul smelling, wretched,
rancorous, uncultivated and lacking care (Nelson, 2000, p. 168). What is important to take into
consideration however, is that the community of Africville was racialized against which resulted in
the landscape being viewed as a slum. In addition, the government not only denied the community
access to basic necessities needed in order to maintain a healthy environment, but continued to
further racialize this community by placing a

Organisational Structure, Leadership And Management Of The...
British Vogue Magazine
Introduction
I will investigate various factors, such as organisational structure, culture, leadership and
management of the British Vogue Magazine. I will use relevant theories to support the report. By
using the relevant theories, I will explain how those factors help to function effectively and achieve
the organisational goals.
Background of the British VogueArthur Baldwin Turnure, the American business man
established the company in 1892. The magazine was first sponsored by Kristoffer Wright, the
first issue was published the 17 of December in 1892 with a cover price of 10 cents (equivalent to
$2.67 in 2016). After his death in 1909 Conde Nast took over the magazine and slowly built up its
publications. The original intention of Vogue was to become most beautiful and tasteful magazine
that had ever occurred. He started Vogue overseas in the 1910 s.
First issue of the British Vogue was published in September 1916. Elspeth Champcommunal, the
first Editor in Chief was working in 1916 1922.
The latest Editor in Chief is Alexandra Shulman, she gave 25 years of her life for British Vogue,
she started in 1992 and today still edits the magazine. Since the beginning of her editorship, the
magazine s circulation reached millions of readers. However, Alexandra Shulman resigning, her
position is appointed to Edward Enninful, the first male Editor in Chief in the British Vogue s

The Big Short Movie Essay
The Big Short is a movie that discusses the housing market crash in 2008. As you may know, the
banks, the mortgage brokers, and the consumers were all affected by this collapse. On each level of
the system, there were things that went wrong and that could have been changed that could have
prevented the failure of the housing market. Before the 1970s the banking was not a business that
you went into to make money. That was until Louis Ranieri came around. Louis Ranieri had one
idea that changed the housing market forever. His plan was to have a mortgageback security. A
mortgage back security is an assist based security backed by a mortgage. For example, if you use
your mortgage to start a business, your business is backed by that mortgage. The average
mortgage loan has a fixed rate loan and takes thirty years to pay off, but then he thought to bundle
them all together. They thought these would still be less risky because who would not pay their
mortgage. They were doing hundreds of million dollars in mortgage bonds a year, but that all
changed when they ran out of mortgages to put into the bonds. If there were no bonds then there
was nothing left to make money, and the banking world was going to back to the way it was.
Rather than letting that happen, the banks made a loan called a subprime loan.
Subprime loans were not like the fixed rate loans at all. Subprime loans have interest rates that raise
quickly, where fixed rate loans stay the same. In the movie, when

Boo Radley Prejudice
The definition of the word prejudice is a preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual
experience. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee shows the horrible things prejudice can
cause to the people the prejudice is against, including three main characters: Arthur Radley, Atticus
Finch and Tom Robinson. To start off, the result of prejudice
is seen through Arthur Boo Radley. In
the town of Maycomb County, Boo Radley is known of as a beast (or monster) for stabbing his
father in the leg while he was making a scrapbook, among other things. Although this was not the
best thing he could ve done, no one actually knows if there was a reason for him doing this and the
citizens of Maycomb are not letting Arthur show what type of person he actually is. Another
hardship containing prejudice at Arthur Radley is between Scout, Jem and Dill. When Dill comes
to visit his aunt from Meridian, the three... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nearly all of Scouts friends have fathers that are youthful and able to do activities that her father
is unable to do because of his age. This shows prejudice because Scout is making a snap
judgment before getting all the information correct and could have at least talked to Atticus about
something that Scout and him could have done together that isn t too tiring for him. Later on,
we read about how Atticus is very well trained with a gun. Yet, this is something Atticus is not
proud of and doesn t want to have anything to do with shooting a gun. The second event of
prejudice towards Atticus is when he gets called a nigger lover for supporting the idea of him
defending a black man named Tom Robinson. The third incidence of prejudice towards Atticus is
when Bob Ewell spits on Atticus s face after he finds out Atticus will be defending Tom Robinson:
What kind of man are you! Bob Ewell says this after he finds out Atticus is going to try his hardest

The Effects Of Climate Change On Earth Today Essay
Climate change otherwise known as global warming has been an ongoing issue for decades.
Beginning in the 19th century, climate change has increasingly affected Earth and its atmosphere.
Rising levels of carbon dioxide are warming the Earth s atmosphere, causing rising sea levels,
melting snow and ice, extreme fires and droughts, and intense rainfall and floods. Climate change
has and will continue to affectfood production, availability of water, and can add to many health
risks in humans and animals. In fact, in an article by Justin Gillis titled, Scientists Warn of Perilous
Climate Shift Within Decades, Not Centuries he focuses on a paper written by a former NASA
climate scientist, James E. Hansen, explaining the effects of climate change on Earth today.
Although many believe Hansen s theories in the paper are quite far fetched, the author mentions,
Despite any reservations they might have about the new paper, virtually all climate scientists agree
with Dr. Hansen s group that society is not moving fast enough to reduce emissions of greenhouse
gases, posing grave risks (Gillis). Gillis validates the fact that climate change has been rapidly
expanding throughout Earth and society has not been able to reduce it fast enough. Many negative
risks are being posed and will continue to mount if the issue of climate change is not taken
seriously. Although climate change negatively affects nearly all aspects of the Earth, it poses a big
threat to agricultureand food production.

Physical, Mental, and Social Benefits of Playing Sports Essay
Sports, a very popular past time today, have been around since ancient times. Greek Olympic
Games featured events from chariot races, javelin throws, to wrestling. In addition, a game
similar to soccer was played in China by the second century BC. In England, a violent rugby type
game was even played to settle feuds between villages. With the development of the industrial
revolution and the creation of the first public schools, sports decreased in violence and were

The experiences of failing and trying again provide a learning process that can translate to greater
achievement in school. A controlled longitudinal study found that adolescents who participated
in sports showed improved grade point averages, had increased attachment to school, and were
more likely to attend college (Larson, Reed, and Sean Seepersad). The persistence children learn
while playing sports will carry on in other parts of life, such as learning in school, leading to
continual success. While playing basketball, I began to grow more mentally and socially. I
stayed more active in the games and reacted faster; I would be ready to block a sudden dash to
our hoop. In other activities, such as math, I began solving equations quicker and was more
focused. Also, as a child I was a quiet and shy. When playing the game, I could not just stand
back; I had to get into the action by challenging the ball or trying to get a pass. As my confidence
developed, I became more bold and outgoing in other parts of my life.
Sports can be a unifying force, too. Parents of high school students who participate in sports have
higher expectations for their children. They will drive their children to work harder and achieve
more potential. Girls find participation in sports to be a way to break gender stereotypes,
enhancing their sense of possibility. Also, playing team sports can minimize feelings of difference
and isolation.

Long Distance Information Delivery
Until the end of the 18th century, the fastest mode of long distance information delivery was by
horseback. Homing pigeons were used for shorter distances; as sending a message just one
hundred miles away by horseback took at least a day to arrive at its destination. At the start of the
19th century, news from Europe took six weeks to reach the US. In 1858, a transatlantic cable
connected North America with Europe, reducing communication time from ten days to a matter of
seconds. But as recently as World War I, only a small elite had access to newspapers, and the
dissemination of news still lay in the hands of a small number of publishers. In the mid 1990s, the

When news circulated that Intel was in talks to buy Altera Corporation, the trader immediately
executed a bullish options strategy, and had a paper profit of over $2.4 million by the market
close less than thirty minutes later. When a reporter for the Wall Street Journal broke the Altera
/Intel story, it was not done through a story on the paper s website, but via a tweet on the
reporter s Twitter account. By the time the full story appeared, trading in Altera had halted as a
result of the news of a possible merger. At that point, it was impossible for other traders to act on
the news of the possible buyout (Intel ultimately acquired Altera in June of 2015). Stories like this
underscore the relevance of social media as an important source of financial information.
Increasingly, today s trading desks look to social media, Twitter in particular, for early, actionable
information to gain an edge in executing their daily workflow. It is not unusual for information
related to the financial markets to appear on Twitter prior to becoming available through
mainstream sources, such as financial television outlets or the websites of news publications. Many
reporters covering the capital markets routinely look to Twitter to tease a news story on their
respective websites ahead of the official version, as was the case with the Journal s reporting on the
Altera/Intel story. Since the rise in popularity of social networks, compliance departments at

Analysis Of Issac Asimov s I Robot
Robots are a more important part of society now then they have ever been. Issac Asimov lived in a
time where robots were merely an idea, but that didn t stop him from using this idea of a robot to
represent different aspects of humanity throughout the chapters of his book I, Robot. Asimov s
book reflects on human nature and what it means to be human. Reflecting can help people to better
understand themselves and the people that surround them. One part of human nature that Asimov
brings up is the idea that even lies with good intentions can cause harm. In I, Robot, one of the
robots has the ability to read minds, but the first Law of Robotics does not allow robots to harm
human in any way, including hurt feelings. Do you suppose that if I asked a question, it wouldn t
give exactly that answer that one wants to hear? Wouldn t any other answer hurt us, and wouldn t
Herbie know that? (Asimov 108). This robot was doing everything it could not to hurt any of the
humans and it did this by lying to them. This is something that many people can relate to, whether
it is lying to someone by telling them they threw a good party or that it couldn t be attended because
of a fake appointment, telling the truth wouldn t benefit anyone. By recognizing that lying is a part
of human nature, it can be understood why someone might choose to lie. The relationships made
throughout life would only benefit from empathizing with another s thought process. Asimov adds

Drug Trafficking In Colombia
Drug trafficking is a major issue in Colombia, causing many other issues across the country. Many
people involved in the drug trade including civilians are being killed, kidnapped, and injured over
this problem. Over the years, the government has started cracking down on the growers, producers,
and sellers but so far, they have only caught minor criminals. The government is making agreements
with neighboring countries and finding alternative uses for the crops to slow down the production
of drugs. Despite all of the efforts being made to stop drugtrafficking, violence, and production the

Why We Should Be Allowed To Chew Gum In School
Have you ever wondered if you should be allowed to chew gum in school? I think we should be
allowed to because it helps with focusing on so many things. Research shows that chewing gum
in school can help you concentrate, and remember things better. So many people say it shouldn t
be allowed in schools because of irresponsible students. They are scared that they will dispose the
gum in the wrong places. The delicious treat that many people like to chew on is a great thing for
schools everywhere! Students should be allowed to chew gum in school.
Chewing gum at school can help with memory loss. While chewing the gum, it helps you
concentrate for longer periods of time. Different research studies all came out with the same
outcome in the end. It was that chewing gum helped students remember the correct answers to
everyday tests. The continuous motion of opening and closing of the jaw helps with memory.
The hippocampus is the area of the brain that helps with memory, and it improves when you re
chewing on something. Also it takes away sleepiness, so students would be able to work for
longer periods of time. Craig Johnston, PhD, an instructor of pediatrics nutrition at the Baylor
College of medicine, led a study with 108 8th grade students. (Hendrick, 2009) He did this to see
if chewing gum really did help in school. Johnston split the group into two groups for the study.

Dis Engagement Theory And The Active Theory

and the active theory these two theories are for and against each other and also argue which theory
is best suited for adult s life and development.
Socio Dis engagement theory shows that the ageing claims that elderly people are disengaged from
society and social role models due to their inevitability of death. However disengagement theorists
have said that that elderly people begin to disengage themselves from previous social groups
realising that they will die in the near future. Moreover the people from the dis engagement theories
were one of the first theorists of ageing that were developed and acknowledged by social scientist.
These theories were developed and processed by Elaine Cumming and Warren Earl Henry in 1961.
Therefore the dis engagement theory of ageing have stated that you cannot stop age it is inevitable
(Robert Havighurst)
In addition the views of disengagement theory views their ageing as a mutual withdrawal that the
process between ageing person and the social system of which they belong such as gradual
withdrawal from society. However the theory viewed that this theory is positive and right way for
elderly because it is an age increased reflection that helps self decreased emotional investment in
people and events. They also believe that adults isolate themselves from society and think that it

The Hindu Wedding
The Hindu pre wedding, wedding, and post wedding have many different observable and intricate
aspects, traditions and rituals. Planning a traditional Hindu wedding just like Christian weddings
can differ between couples as well as differences within the Hindu wedding ceremonies between
South India and North India. The most important aspect of weddings in India is that it involves
the whole family. It is not just two people becoming one, it is two families becoming one.
Knowing this, fully expect to have both families involved in every step of planning your big day!
Parents shop for their daughters bridal gifts and goods from the time they are born and devote a
massive amount of their savings for this anticipated weddingday (Vora, 2012). Just like in America,
the first step is an engagement ceremony or in the Hindu tradition, the Mangni (Gullapalli Sagi,
n.d., P.1). In this step the exciting news is shared and the engagement is made official with the
meeting of both sides of the family (Gullapalli Sagi, n.d. P.1). Among the festivities, it is a custom
to pick the Muhurat, or date and time of the wedding during this event (Gullapalli Sagi, n.d., Pp.1
2). Due to the fact that you are a Leo and your fiance is a Capricorn, your zodiac signs, help
determine the appropriate Muhurat. After months of planning, decision making and bonding, your
grand event has finally arrived. The Mehendi ceremony starts off the pre wedding festivities, where

How to Satisfy Hunger with Home Cooking for Today
Home cooking offer dishes with exceptional taste and satisfaction. However, modern living often
leaves little time for cooking at home (National Restaurant Association, n.d.). Due to modernization
and adjustments in the lifestyles of many people, the means of complying with the demand of
satisfying their hunger has changed dramatically.
According to a research conducted by the National Restaurant Association (2013), about 33% of the
consumers say that spending in fast food restaurants is an indispensable part in their lifestyles. It is
for the reason that people in this fast phasing world prefer convenience foods that are served very
quickly more than the home cooked meals that take time to prepare. This trend is sustained through
the emergence of a prominent industry the fast food.
Fast food industry is perceived to be an American conception. It is said to first begin in the United
States of America in 1912 with the opening of a simple fast food restaurant called the Automat,
which serve foods and drinks through coin and bill operated vending machines.
The idea of this firm was soon followed and more popularized by the White Castle Restaurant in
Wichita, Kansas in 1916. An article entitled Fast Food (n.d.) said that fast food restaurants have
come a long way when Billy Ingram and Walter Anderson sold hamburgers for five cents apiece,
and launched the first high speed hamburger chain, the White Castle Restaurant.

Geological Hazards of Missouri Although many may not consider Missouri to be a hot spot of
geological related natural disasters, there are multiple geological hazards which occur throughout
the state. According to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources Geological Survey Program,
the hazards most often occurring in Missouri are earthquakes, landslides, sinkholes and abandoned
mines (Geologic Hazards). Although most of the current earthquakes in Missouri measure between

Similar to a cave, a sinkhole begins by acidic water dissolving carbonate bedrock creating an
underground void. If the void grows close enough to the surface, the structural integrity of the
surface material will eventually give way and a sinkhole is formed. These depressions can range
in size from a few square yards to over hundreds of acres. The depth of sinkholes can vary from
shallow to hundreds of feet. Although there are nearly 16,000 verified sinkholes in the state, the
MGS caution there are a great number which have not been reported or documented. Some
sinkholes in Missouri are known to be a depth greater than 100 feet though no exact records
concerning depths are maintained. Located in western Boone County, the largest known
sinkhole in Missouri covers approximately 700 acres. If a sinkhole does occur, it is
recommended that a registered geologist or professional engineer be consulted to assist in the
stabilization of the sinkhole. Filling a sinkhole, referred to as remediation, generally consists of
removing all soil materials down to the bedrock surface and filling it with size graded material.
Larger rocks should be used first with each successive layer consisting of gradually smaller grained
material. Geotextile fabric covered by top soil will allow water

The black footed ferret, the bald eagle, and the peregrine falcon have all taken a journey from the

that this was due to the implementation of the Endangered Species Act (ESA), which was drafted

environmental legislation . ( Endangered Species1). Surely such a successful piece of legislation
deserves praise, yet it is not all that it appears. Despite good intentions it is entirely possible that

Sqlite Essay
SQLite is an Open Source database. SQLite supports standard relational database features like SQL
syntax, transactions and prepared statements. The database requires limited memory at runtime
(approx. 250 KByte) which makes it a good candidate from being embedded into other runtimes.
SQLite supports the data types TEXT (similar to String in Java), INTEGER (similar to long in
Java) and REAL (similar to double in Java). All other types must be converted into one of these
fields before getting saved in the database. SQLite itself does not validate if the types written to the
columns are actually of the defined type, e.g. you can write an integer into a string column and vice
versa.

Other more familiar database engines run great once you get them going. But doing the initial
installation and configuration can be intimidatingly complex.
Server less
Most SQL database engines are implemented as a separate server process. Programs that want
to access the database communicate with the server using some kind of interprocess
communication (typically TCP/IP) to send requests to the server and to receive back results.
SQLite does not work this way. With SQLite, the process that wants to access the database reads
and writes directly from the database files on disk. There is no intermediary server process. There
are advantages and disadvantages to being server less. The main advantage is that there is no
separate server process to install, setup, configure, initialize, manage, and troubleshoot. This is one
reason why SQLite is a zero configuration database engine. Programs that use SQLite require no
administrative support for setting up the database engine before they are run. Any program that is
able to access the disk is able to use an SQLite database.
On the other hand, a database engine that uses a server can provide better protection from bugs in
the client application stray pointers in a client cannot corrupt memory on the server. And because a
server is a single persistent process, it is able control database access with more precision, allowing
for finer grain locking and better concurrency.
Most SQL database engines are

Trailer Case Summary
Trailer 1 did a decent job with loading the livestock and transporting them, but that is about as far
as the credit goes. Loading cattle at night in cool temperatures helped to keep the cattle calm
while loading, and the load density was of an appropriate level. The non slip flooring and
bedding helped the livestock move around the trailer and stay dry. The notes left do not
describe the temperature in Fargo, ND, so it is challenging to assess if the non covered slats are
an issue that could cause concern. Cattle can handle cooler temperatures better than other
animals, but covered slats would be needed if transport occurred during a cold winter month as
North Dakota experiences rather harsh winters. Failure to add covered slats to the trailer on a
long drive like this could lead to potential frostbite on the animals hide. The driver arrived just
prior to the afternoon shift change, so the livestock waited 45 minutes to be unloaded from the
trailer, which is not of concern. When the livestock were being unloaded, 15 of the 40 animals fell,

During the late 90 s, when Gattaca was released, talks on gene manipulation were very serious. It
was also around the time when the clone of Dolly the sheep was revealed to the public. In my
opinion, Andrew Niccol had purposely released the film at that particular time to make realise
the consequences of gene manipulation, to make parents most of all, realise what could
happen. I think that at the end of the film, when Jerome commits suicide and Vincent is going up
into space, is a very effective part in portraying the consequences of having a genetically
modified child. A person who thought he was perfect in all ways possible, who people thought
to be perfect; his life ended the day he got a silver medal instead of gold in a swimming

become successful in killing himself at the end. I think Andrew Niccol wanted to depict how fatal
the consequences could be, because people were only seeing one side of the story more like only
being shown one side the better side of the story; these people being parents. He wanted people, in
particular parents to become aware of the problems arising with having gene manipulated children.

depending on the patients religious or spiritual beliefs; hospice will provide the patient with the
correct support team to allow the patient to be in a familiar setting. In addition to this, there are
aides to help the patient with the patient needs such as getting out of bed, bathing, and dressing.

The Search for Truth in Hamlet by William Shakespeare
Hamlet will always be well known for his delay in killing Claudius. After the interaction with his
fathers ghost. The ghost informes Hamlet that he must get revenge and now kill Claudius. But from
the start hesitation was in effect. There are many different theories of why Hamlet delayed revenge
the most well know are finding of a perfect moment and him questioning death and the ghost itself.
Hamletwas never unfaithful, he always want to go, but that he had never finished thinking the
matter out.
Hamlet feels the moment of death is important and has to come at the right time. Hamlet had one
well known opportunity to kill Claudius, but his hesitation came in when he realized he was
praying. According to Karl S Guthke hamlet did not kill Claudius while he was praying because
if he was to have stabbed him in the back at that moment he would go straight to heaven no
matter how sinful his life was. ( Guthke 91) Hamlet shows how important the moment of death is
when he says that he will wait until lust and sin come back, and when his soul would be at the
door of hell. (Kilgore)He is constantly putting it off, because he is not ready, because he has not
done thinking about it. Hamlet says he will not kill him now, he wants to find a moment that when
killed he will be sent to hell.(Shakespeare)
A main reason for the delay was questioning the truth. He wanted to make sure his uncle Claudius
was the one actually guilty of murdering his father the king .He didn t want

Generation View Of Reality Essay
Generation s View of Reality
Ben Stiller s 1994 film, Reality Bites, portrays the broad based struggles of
America s twentysomethings through a lighthearted glimpse into the lives of the movie s main
characters. Four friends, recently graduated from college, find themselves over educated and
under employed, a theme reiterated in the lives of many Generation Xers according to critic
Marilyn Gardner. She states, unemployment is higher for those under 25 then it is for the
workforce as a whole. (pg. 14, col. 1) Though Reality Bites bills itself as a comedy about love
in the 90 s, the film is more of a commentary on the issues facing young adults today
(Kempley, Sec. C., pg 7). The central theme concerning ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Michael is a producer for In Your Face Television, a spoof on MTV, the
channel of choice for our generation. Though Michael is young enough to be included in
Generation X, his ideals revolve around possessions as a measure of success, something no
authentic member of Generation X would tolerate.
Somewhere in the middle is Lalaina, a strange mixture of the two. She is the
valedictorian of her graduating class and is briefly employed by a television talk show as an
intern like production assistant until she is fired. In her valedictory address, she condemns the
BMW driving older generation of her parents who have left a lack of employment and natural
resources for her and her peers. Ironically, her graduation gift from her father is a used
BMW, which she concedes to drive until she can afford an inexpensive car of her own. Lalaina s
unemployment leads her to look for jobs where she is inexperienced (working as a news
journalist) to over qualified (flipping burgers at Burgerama), none of which are fruitful. Lalaina
then becomes a slacker herself by eating chips and chain smoking in her pajamas for hours a day.
The social issues facing the characters in the film are what differentiates Reality Bites
from other so called generational flicks such as Rebel Without a Cause, The Graduate, and The
Big Chill. In one of the opening montages, Vicky (Jeanne Garafalo) is shown

Gregory Gioiosa
Of Beauty, Of Joy, Of Stillness, Of Love , the name explains it all; this art not only speaks to the
mind, but to the body. Gioiosa s use of lighting, space, psychological lines, shading, and balance are
beautifully intertwined in his deep piece.
Gregory Gioiosa is a Los Angeles based artist whose works have been collected internationally. He
earned a B.F.A. from Fresno State University and his M.F.A. from U.C Irvine (Longview Museum
of Fine Arts). Gioiosa painted Of Beauty, Of joy, Of Stillness, Of Lovein 1999. He painted his
masterpiece on canvas with acrylic paint; the shading of colors and psychological lines suggest a
deep balance that is unsuspected. In Of Beauty, Of Joy, Of Stillness, Of Love, Gioiosa uses the

It is easy to see that each of the strokes of his brush were carefully taken into perspective. Of
Beauty, Of Joy, Of Stillness, Of Love s basic properties enlighten the viewer on balance and
depth. In this painting Gioiosa uses lighting, space, psychological lines, shading, and balance to
provide a canvas with questions. He makes the canvas seem like its own person with his distinct
use of the acrylics. In this painting I see an intricate mandala at the top. This can symbolize
many things; a higher power, a lifeform, and even a planet. This is what is special about Gioiosa
s work, it makes the viewer think about themselves and reflect. Merriam Webster defines
ethereal as of or relating to the regions beyond the earth, celestial, heavenly(Merriam Webster). I
find this to be the perfect word to describe Of Beauty, Of Joy, Of Stillness, Of Love. Not only
does this painting look aesthetically pleasing, Gioiosa made me do exactly what he hoped to do
with his artwork. Gioiosa said in an interview I hope it is able to open up pathways and avenues
for people to experience their inner soul. (Supreme Master, TV) Gioiosa made me question myself
just as much as i questioned his

Main Goals of The Progressive Movement Essay
In the late nineteenth century to early twentieth century the Progressive Era was moving to reshape
America. Progressivism was a political movement that encouraged the exposure of corruption in
America in order to reshape it for the better. This time period became known for the social and
political changes that took place as a result of the progressives. Progressivism ruled the country,
changing the way Americans lived and the way politics affected them. One of the main goals of the
progressive movement was to use democracy to regulate the government by exposing the corruption
of government officials. Another area in which the progressives moved for change was business. In

He was most known for his book The Jungle, which became a worldwide bestseller and
dramatically changed food regulation during the Progressive Era. Many people saw the results of
this book as good, but they did not see the corruption it caused. Upton Sinclair s The Jungle changed
food regulation in America forever, but the effects that came about because of The Jungle were
more detrimental than beneficial.
Upton Beall Sinclair grew up in a poor family, always moving around from city to city with his
father s job as a salesman. His mother, Priscilla Sinclair, had rich relatives on her side of the
family whom Upton would visit with some regularity. As he grew up this allowed him to see
how the rich and the poor lived, giving him an insight that shaped his career as a writer and
journalist. He did not have a good relationship with either his mother or father, causing him to
become independent at a young age. When he was just fourteen his family moved to New York
city and he started writing to pay for his tuition at the City College of New York. He went on to
graduate from Columbia University, paying his way with stories he wrote. His early career
consisted of small novels and journal articles that never became well known. Upton Sinclair often
wrote for the socialist journal Appeal to Reason, showing his socialist ideals. Growing up in
poverty and visiting wealth caused him to have these socialist views. The crowning point of his
career came

Essay on An Experience in My Lfe
An Experience in My Life December 31, 2004, while everyone else was celebrating New Year s,
my family and I were moving from one city to another. It was hard for me to move another city
because I was leaving behind the town where I was born and all my friends. This was one of the
biggest impacts that I have experience in my life. Moving from one townto another was like
moving to another world where I did not know anyone. But the hardest part of moving for me
was moving to another school where I did not know anyone and I did not know what to expect.
Moving from a place I grew up and lived my whole life was really difficult to adapt to the new

inviting me to places and showing me around the town. Can you show specific examples of how
things changed for you? They introduced me to their friends and I felt more comfortable in the
new town. I met new people and I stated to feel like at home. As the time past the feeling of not
being at home started to fade away. I started to get familiar with all the stores, streets, and
restaurants. I started to give the town a chance and the result were positive. The getting familiar

Academic Study of Problem Solving and Thinking Related to...
Academic study of problem solving and thinking related to everyday life Every day individuals
are faced with many different problems for example deciding what to wear, finding a suitable
place to park your car or even completing an assignment. Whatever the problem is, problem
solving is defined as any goal directed sequence of cognitive operations , as suggested by Anderson
(1980, p.257). There has been a vast amount of research on human problem solving which has
provided a better understanding of the processes involved in problem solving. An evaluation of a
range of theories related to human problem solving and thinking will be introduced such as

Robertson, 2001 also suggested that information processing system is not realistic due to the
reason that it involves prime levels of motivation and arousal, the knowledge of a guaranteed
solution in the Tower of Hanoi can explain individuals motivation and arousal as they are trying
to solve the problem although in another problem where the knowledge of solution is unclear
fatigue and boredom can take affect which therefore also suggest that it cannot be applied to
other solutions. Transfer of learning approach is another main topic in human problem solving;
it outlines the influence of previous knowledge on solving a problem. An individual uses past
situations and recalls the outcome of that situation and applies the knowledge to a similar
problem they may face now. An example of this would be a person is getting late for work and
parks their car near the office however receives a parking ticket although the outcome was
negative they would use this experience to either leave home early to find a suitable space or to
check next time if they are able to park in the space. Another example would be driving, a person
driving will have drove a number of times however each time they drive they will encounter many
different situations such as pedestrians walking out in the middle of the road, other vehicles
speeding or the change of weather. However these situations will have been similarly experienced
before and the driver will have skills like

Power In Animal Farm Essay
Have you ever been curious about how animals feel inside living in farms and who are the big
bosses that run everything within the farm? And who has the power? In, Animal Farm, size did
not matter in this case! The animals were convinced to do what the pigs tell them to. The power
holders in the book are the pigs ! Puny, chubby, and persuading pigs! Ruling a whole farm of
animals. They were smooth with their words and careful and manipulative. Then, soon enough the
pigs took matters into their hands causing surprises to most of the farm animals. In the book
Animal Farm as well as in our society, the leader that rise to power are usually the cleverest or most
intelligent and most able to manipulate.
To begin with, The real power holder was o l Major, the animal that everybody praised, obeyed,
and were grateful for! After, his pass is when the pigs came in power! They were teaching and
organizing all the others. The work of teaching and organising the others fell naturally upon the
pigs, who were generally recognized as being the cleverest of the animals page 15. The two pigs

How Did Thucydides Contribute To The Peloponnesian War
Thucydides, an Athenian who lived during the Peloponnesian War (431 404 BC), may be one of
the earliest western war theorists thanks to his work, History of the Peloponnesian War. His history
described the conflict between ancient Athens and Sparta. In doing so, he authored one of the most
balanced and powerful explanations of the causes of war.
Thucydides, linked to the Athenian aristocracy, enjoyed a wealthy upbringing and education as a
youth. As an adult, he served as a commander for Athens. He witnessed a number speeches, debates,
and events or heard them second hand that decided the many courses the war would take. This all
bears out in the articulate, informed narrative of the war from tactical through strategic levels.
Surprisingly, Thucydides maintained an objective perspective through much of his history. One
assumes that as an Athenian, he would take a pro Athens approach. However, two reasons provide
balance and significance to his work. First, following the loss ... Show more content on

Ancient Greece consisted of many competing city states; the most powerful consisted of democratic
Athens and authoritarian Sparta. Each power made strategic decisions in different ways. The
Athenians set and adjusted the course of the war through open debate and voting while the Spartan
oligarchy under a king cast the final decisions. Additionally, each state s economic nature affected
their military character. The agrarian Sparta formed a dominant landpower while the seafaring
Athenians cultivated a powerful navy. Further, though a small theater of operations compared to
modern standards, time and space affected the course and nature of the war. Wind speed and sea
conditions limited throughput along lines of communication. Rigid Hellenic phalanxes encouraged
set piece battles. Annual growing seasons restricted when soldiers were able to fight and how far

The Importance Of Protein Degradation
The authors goal in conducting this experiment was to establish a link between, among other
things, protein degradation through the ubiquitin protease system (UPS) and the consolidation and
reconsolidation of long term fear memories. This research was necessary because, while research
had been done linking proteindegradation to synaptic plasticity, no study had been performed to
analyze the role of UPS in the amygdala, where long term fear memories are believed to be stored.
Additionally, prior research had led to conflicting reports of the importance of protein degradation
in consolidation as opposed to reconsolidation, which the authors intended to clarify. To obtain the
desired information, researchers tested male Long Evans rats ... Show more content on

Most research findings confirmed what prior research indicated protein degradation and synthesis
are essential in memory formation and memory formation relies on NMDA. However, the research
indicated differences between the memory processes used by the hippocampus and amygdala in
that prior researchers had found little evidence that protein degradation was a necessary part of the
consolidation of memories in hippocampus. This led researchers to conclude that the amygdala and
hippocampus may be more similar with regard to reconsolidation of memories than consolidation of
memories.
Analysis:
Prior to reading the article, I had very little understanding of the importance of proteins in memory
functions. I believed them to be most important with regard to enzymatic functioning and structural
composition. However, the article indicates how incredibly important the minutiae of protein
function are to a properly functioning memory. Based on protein function, researchers were able to
control if and how much the rats were able to remember. The data do seem to support the authors
conclusions. Protein degradation was measured by the presence of ubiquitin, which was a fairly
accurate measurement tool. In addition, the researchers used an abundance of controlled groups in
order to isolate the desired variable the combination of shock and auditory cue. Conclusions about
the presence of elevated protein degradation are supported by the collected data from the

  • 2. Sternocleidomastoid The sternocleidomastoid are muscles that are considered accessory. They are active for inhalation when needs increase or during high lung volumes as in hyperinflation. These muscles pull the sternum up and increase the size of the upper rib cage in the AP dimension, sometimes taught as pump handle elevation. These accessory muscles are affected by the position of the diaphragm and changes in the ZOA.10Kyndy The diaphragm displaces the abdomen and the rib cage equally during quiet breathing. If the resting tone in the oblique abdominals is insufficient, more than half of the expansion would go into abdominal expansion allowing for superior migration of the anterior aspect of the rib cage. This would decrease the ZOA, change the muscle lengths... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Weakness in the abdominals can have a snowball effect on posture and will be discussed later.1 Like the diaphragm, the transversus abdominis modulates its activity for both postural and respiratory functions, unlike the other abdominal muscles. It is not active during quite breathing but becomes active as the demands for expiration increase. Its EMG activity is therefore out of phase with EMG activity by the diaphragm. 8,11Hodges/Gandevia 2000 and Hodges/Gandevia /Richardson Various studies have shown that the diaphragm and the transversus abdominis simultaneously contract prior to movements in the extremities. Hodges et al demonstrated this co activation 20ms prior to the activation of the deltoid when the subject was asked to move an arm into flexion.8 Hodges/Gandevia/Richardson. Hodges monitored the diaphragm by measuring the length of the ZOA because it+ is closely associated with the length of the diaphragm. He believed that the diaphragm+ was contributing to postural stability by, maintaining the hoop like geometry of the abdominal wall.Hodges19 Vostatek stated that the diaphragm was contracting in order to provide abdominal pressure for stabilization of the spine. He also stated that the ribs needed to stay down and only expand out to the sides during inhalation in order to maintain ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Feminist Spirituality and Goddess Religion in the United... Thousands of years ago, the Goddess was viewed as an autonomous entity worthy of respect from men and women alike. Because of societal changes caused by Eastern influence, a patriarchical system conquered all aspects of life including religion. Today, the loss of a strong female presence in Judeo Christian beliefs has prompted believers to look to other sources that celebrate the role of women. Goddess religion and feminist spirituality have increasingly been embraced by men and women as an alternative to the patriarchy found in traditional biblical religion. Within a few thousand years the first recognizable human society developed worship of the Great Goddess or Great Mother. For these people, deity was female. The importance... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It has been referred to as eco feminism to reflect this increased emphasis. This stems from the Wiccan ideology that people have a unique responsibility toward the environment because of our ability to make conscious choices (Corbett 292). Goddess worship broadened to include African, Asian, and Native American ideals beyond the classic Wiccan deities. It became politically correct by beginning to include gays and lesbians (formerly neglected with the emphasis on male female fertility) as well as the ecological movement and an openness to people of color and other minorities. Now considered the fastest growing religion in America by some scholars, neo Pagans were represented at the World Council of Religions in 1993. Despite the spread of feminist and goddess belief, many witches still face discrimination because of their faith. People outside the neo Pagan community still often confuse Wicca with Satanism, feeling that witchcraft is not a valid religion and should not be afforded the same protections as more mainstream , consensus religions. However, Wicca and other goddess religions are not Satanistic. Satanism focuses on the Christian idea of the devil, whereas these spiritualities predate Christianity and have no link to those beliefs (Corbett 292). Another common misconception is that witches cast spells in order to hurtothers for their own or someone else s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Essay On The Movie Goodfellas For a second I thought I was dead, but when I heard all the noise I knew they were cops. Only cops talked that way. If they had been wiseguys, I wouldn t have heard a thing. I would have been dead ( Goodfellas 00:50:47 59). This is something that Henry Hill said when he is caught by the police. Before this happened, Henry is trying to get some drugs on an airplane. There were many events that lead up to Henry being detained by the police; he tried selling guns to someone, he made dinner for his friends and family, and then he made a visit to his mistress. While Henry is driving to each place, he is troubled by a helicopter that was following him. Goodfellasis a film that was released in 1990, and the movie was directed by Martin Scorsese. The movie is a popular one by all of the awards that it achieved. It is also based on a true story. The visual elements that are used in this movie affect how the viewers see it. Throughout the movie, the director uses music, camera angles, and lighting to contribute to the overall effect of the movie. To start, the movie is centered around the character Henry Hill. Henry Hill is a gangster, and he wanted to be one ever since he was a kid. He got a job working with the local gangsters as soon as possible. He kept this away from his parents because he knew that they would not like it. Henry eventually met with the people he would work with, and they were Tommy DeVito and Jimmy Conway. The film progresses by showing all of the events that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Of Syria and Civil Wars Virinder Kaur POLS 202 01: International Relations Reaction Paper #1: Of Syrian Wars and US Foreign Policies Due: October 4, 2012 Modern Syria first gained its independence in 1946, following many years of violent strife. Before this, the state had been under a French Mandate and had suffered under a conditional (or more aptly, false) independence, wherein the French State held veto power over any potential laws introduced by the Syrian people (US Dept. of State). In 1970, the Baath party came into political power in Syria in yet another bloody coup d Г©tat, with Minister of Defense, Hafiz al Assad, taking up the mantle of President (US Dept. of State). He would remain in power up until his death in the year 2000. This would... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Foreign intervention in the Syrian Civil War will only result in a high price to be paid, mainly the US loss of support on the international front as well as the financial expenses that the US would incur if involved militarily. Such civil wars and intrastate conflicts between rebel groups and the government can be resolved through diplomatic negotiations that can avoid these expenses (Frieden). The US is not financially secure enough to engage in yet another bloody conflict in the Middle East, particularly one as convoluted as the one in Syria. The usage of the word convoluted is significant in that it remains uncertain who the non FSA and who the actual leaders of the rebellion are. According to Frieden, it is difficult to gather information about who is a part of these militant groups because they are covert and because terrorist groups have incentives to exaggerate. Furthermore, should that question and the identities of the FSA be resolved, how would we distinguish the innocent from the terrorists? Both important actors in these uprisings, the Syrian government, and the Free Syrian Army and other rebel fighters, have participated in what may be considered international war crimes that have resulted in a multitude of civilian deaths. • 7. Grand Nursing Theorist Grand Nursing Theorist Assignment # 2 Grand Nursing Theorist Assignment # 2 Descriptive Analysis For this assignment, I chose to study grand nursing theorist Dorothy Orem and the nursing concept she introduced, the self care deficit theory (also known as the Orem model of nursing). I chose to study Dorothy Orem because she is well known in Indiana, the state in which I reside. Orem s grand nursing theory was developed between 1959 and 2001...[and] is particularly used in rehabilitation and primary care settings where the patient is encouraged to be as independent as possible (Orem amp; Taylor, 2011). Background of Theorist Dorothy Orem was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1914. She received her diploma in nursing in 1934 from... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The self care deficit theory works toward Orem s goal of improving the quality of nursing in general hospitals in her state. The model interrelates concepts in such a way as to create a different way of looking at a particular phenomenon. The theory is relatively simple, but generalizable to apply to a wide variety of patents. It can be used by nurses to guide and improve practice (Dennis, 1997). Testability In testing Orem s theory, other nurses have asked, Is this theory compatible with standards of nursing care and nursing practice today? Orem s theory has been applied and tested in many clinical areas of nursing. Nursing Care plans are created from key parts of the theory and identify patient goals and the nursing interventions to achieve those goals. Orem s self care deficit theory uses three systems to show how nursing care can be implemented to meet self care needs of patients: wholly compensatory, partial compensatory, and health education (McEwen, amp; Wills,2011). Futher more, there is supportive evidence that the theory has been used to develop nursing research and education. Orem s model of theory is used to develop nursing curriculum in numerous universities, colleges, and schools of nursing all over the country. It has also added to nursing knowledge, has created new hypothesis in nursing through research, and Orem s self care theory has had numerous research studies conducted on her ... • 8. Concert Review I attended this concert at CU Denver s King Center, Concert Hall. Although the architectural design and surrounding did not attest to much artistic creativity, the actual concert was better than my expectations. I did have lower expectations because it was presented by students instead of professional musicians or dancers as in my last concert review. The ensemble, a collaborative outcome from MSU Denver and other dance/cultural musicgroups from denver, was actually a mix of African and Indian/East Asian music and dance. The two teams alternated between each other giving the audience a great deal of contrast of movement and sound. My favorite were the second and fifth performances, African and Indian respectively. The second performance by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They presented a story of a goddess teasing a boy with a magical ball, then throwing it into a pond where a monster is asleep. The boy then awakens this monster trying to reach the ball. The story is meant to encourage people to face their fears and fight for what they want. I liked how they used the same movements when they were describing the story before starting their performance which they later used during the dance. For example, one of the dancers showed the same throwing movement which she later used in the performance. The dance was accompanied by an Indian chant like song over the speakers. It had the same simplistic nature as the African music discussed above which I again noticed that it put the focus on the dancers. They music and movement was much slower and calmer than the Africans, which makes sense when seen in light of the Eastern Asian spiritual philosophy of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. The Root Of Happiness In American Culture Money seems to be the root of happiness in the American culture. Without money, Americans are unhappy and discontent with their lives. We are a materialistic breed, meaning we are prone to expecting money to be the source of our happiness. Although there are several instances where money is not the direct source of happiness, most of the time it has a large affect on a person s level of happiness. Although money seems to be the cause of happiness in most cases, it is not. Money, in today s world is almost necessary to achieve happiness, but not in all of society. Money cannot buy appreciation, but it does go a long way when talking about a dollar amount or even what you have. Sure, appreciation will not buy you nice things. The things you have, value, and love cannot be overvalued by money or expensive things. Even if you have a gigantic amount of money with no appreciation, you will be miserable.... If you do not work you have endless amounts of time of your hands to do whatever you so choose. Money can help fund the idea of happiness by allowing a person to purchase things to do hobbies, go places, or even attend events that will fill the void in their life. Doing your favorite things will help you achieve the ulimate goal of happiness. In today s society, money can buy you almost everything from time to even a person s health to make you ... • 10. Dive Mask Research Paper SCUBA DIVING GEAR 101: The Basics As much as we, humans, would like to swim and dive in open waters without any form of protection and aid, our anatomy just isn t perfectly designed to handle underwater conditions for long amounts of time. This is where SCUBA Diving gear comes in. SCUBA Diving gear allows us to see, breathe, swim and stay warm underwater. To beginners, this stuff might look like it came from a sci fi alien invasion movie, so we ll discuss each one to help you understand. The Dive Mask. This piece of equipment protects your eyes from sea salt and other nasty sea stuff. But more importantly, the dive mask lets you ogle at the beauty of the underwater world! The dive mask separates your eyes (and sometimes nose) from water and creates an air pocket to let you see clearly underwater. The mask is fastened on the diver s face because of something called elastomer skirt , but we don t have to worry about that yet! All it means is that the water can t get through and your mask won t suddenly come off. The Snorkel. It s like a straw, but instead of sucking water or beverage, we actually use this to breathe through our mouths. The snorkel allows us to breathe while facing down when underwater. Some models are even designed to allow us to expel the water that somehow gets in there. It is usually used for short and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Because we don t have gills, we have to rely on the regulator to breathe underwater. The regulator is called as such because it regulates the amount of air you receive from the SCUBA tank every time you inhale. It is a little similar to the snorkel in that it allows you to breathe underwater and it has a mouthpiece. However, the regulator is connected to the SCUBA tank and will allow you to stay underwater for much longer. The octopus, on the other hand, is not a pet you can take with you when you go diving (although I wish I could). It is a backup regulator, in case something goes wrong with your first ... • 11. Cold War Manderin Essay The book, Cold War Mandarin Ngo Dinh Diem and the Origins of America s War in Vietnam 1950 1963, by Seth Jacobs is a comprehensive retelling of the rise and fall of Ngo Dinh Diem s government in South Vietnam. In that retelling Jacob focuses on the major events that took place in Vietnam as well as showed how America backed a leader that did nothing to booster his nation and led America into one of the worst wars in its history. The Diem regime was a corrupt and tyrannical government that used the United States fears of communism to push its own goals that ultimately led to its own demise. Jacob viewed the escalation of America s involvement in Vietnam as the following, The nine year experiment that ended when Diem died was... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Diem stood at odds with Ho Chi Minh who was, eager to expand his base of support, Ho reached out to anti communist nationalists: he especially wanted to attract Vietnam s Catholic minority, and understood that the presence of a predominant Catholic in his first coalition cabinet would go a long way to accomplish this goal (22). Diem refused to work with the Viet Minh and upon breaking communications with them would then work organize an anti Viet Minh political party. Diem was very much a nationalist, but not communist, and this is what drew the Americans to Diem. The need had arisen to replace the Bao Dai emperorship, for in the eyes of many Vietnamese it was a sham and the only other alternative was that of the communists and Ho Chi Minh. Diem understood this and he, insisted that France s Bao Dai solution was all but handing Indochina to the Viet Minh. Only a Vietnamese leader who had not collaborated with either the French or Communists could succeed in forming a government to rival that of Ho (28). His arguments of Vietnamese nationalism made sense to many political figures in Washington, thus putting him further in the front running for American support. Diem also secured further support from his Catholic faith, which put him in good with many influential figures in America, such as Cardinal Spellman who was very influential in right wing political circles. • 12. Symbolism In The Black Cat In the short tale The Black Cat, Edgar Allen Poe expresses his hate and love for cats. With twisting words and mystical views, the tale takes place in the 1840 s. Within this classic American Literature Gothic tale, symbolism is depicted throughout with many plot twists the story is told. While The Black Cat was written to achieve an effect of shocking insanity in this time period it did just that. In this first person narrative the narrator tells of the readers of his decline from sanity and madness, all because of an obsession with two or maybe one black cat. This short story easily achieved the effect and use of symbolism. In this tale the use of symbolizes are represented by the setting, the cat or cats, the house and his wife, all of which are a great representation of Edgar Allen Poe s imaginary and life. In the tale the setting was a sign of symbolism. Poe represented this in the plot development with a diverse word choice, and detailed character development. In most cases, the setting is usually indelible to a story, but The Black Cat relies little on this element. Poe used detailed character development so the reader begins to empathize with the characters. With just enough character information given out at the time of the horrific event the reader will feel connected. This tale could have occurred anywhere and can be placed in any era. This makes the setting the weakest element of The Black Cat. Poe does not say a certain location of where it takes place leaving the reader to wonder. The most obvious of symbolic references in this story is the first and the second cat that arrives in the tale and the name chosen, Pluto. Pluto leads his owner down the path toward insanity and loss of reason (Lombardi, Esther). As Poe states in the following quote Pluto is his best friend, why would he have killed them? Pluto this was the cat s name was my favorite pet and playmate. I alone fed him, and he attended me wherever I went about the house. It was even with difficulty that I could prevent him from following me through the streets (Edgar Allen Poe). Could the man in the tale have been a drunken fool, or suffered for a psychotic illness. • 13. Landscape Of Africville Analysis Through exploring everyday life, geography is an essential discipline that is a central part of our understandings of the world around us. An important part of geography deals with the relationship between human activity and the physical aspects of where this activity takes place (Bryan, 1958). It is important to then consider that these physical aspects can often be viewed as landscapes within our society. The concept of landscape plays an important part within geographyand this is a term that has been associated with a way of seeing the natural world (Cosgrove, 1984). From a geographical perspective, it is a concept embedded with visual aspects and appearance but also composed of structure and functions. Although landscapes assist individuals... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Examining Sherene Razack s (2002) term, a white settler society , we are able to gain an understanding that the province of Nova Scotia took part in being a white settler society in relation to the Africville community. According to Razack (2002), aspects of a white settler society take place when there is a racial hierarchy present and spaces are organized to maintain unequal social relations. The landscape of this community was structured in this way because the community was predominately of black individuals and therefore the inhabitants were not regarded as being an important part of the city. This can be demonstrated through the ways in which the community of Africville was treated by the government of Nova Scotia. For instance, during the time that Africville was present, this community was denied of essential services in which Nelson (2000) explains, requests for water lines and sewerage which would bring sanitation and quality of life closer to the standards for the rest of the city were refused. Police and fire protection and garbage collection on par with such services received by the rest of Halifax were denied. Living conditions were ironically described by city officials as intolerable and unsanitary (p. 166). Thus, the landscape of Africville was associated with being regarded as a slum within the society of Nova Scotia. A slum is referred to as filthy, foul smelling, wretched, rancorous, uncultivated and lacking care (Nelson, 2000, p. 168). What is important to take into consideration however, is that the community of Africville was racialized against which resulted in the landscape being viewed as a slum. In addition, the government not only denied the community access to basic necessities needed in order to maintain a healthy environment, but continued to further racialize this community by placing a ... • 15. The Big Short Movie Essay The Big Short is a movie that discusses the housing market crash in 2008. As you may know, the banks, the mortgage brokers, and the consumers were all affected by this collapse. On each level of the system, there were things that went wrong and that could have been changed that could have prevented the failure of the housing market. Before the 1970s the banking was not a business that you went into to make money. That was until Louis Ranieri came around. Louis Ranieri had one idea that changed the housing market forever. His plan was to have a mortgageback security. A mortgage back security is an assist based security backed by a mortgage. For example, if you use your mortgage to start a business, your business is backed by that mortgage. The average mortgage loan has a fixed rate loan and takes thirty years to pay off, but then he thought to bundle them all together. They thought these would still be less risky because who would not pay their mortgage. They were doing hundreds of million dollars in mortgage bonds a year, but that all changed when they ran out of mortgages to put into the bonds. If there were no bonds then there was nothing left to make money, and the banking world was going to back to the way it was. Rather than letting that happen, the banks made a loan called a subprime loan. Subprime loans were not like the fixed rate loans at all. Subprime loans have interest rates that raise quickly, where fixed rate loans stay the same. In the movie, when ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee shows the horrible things prejudice can cause to the people the prejudice is against, including three main characters: Arthur Radley, Atticus Finch and Tom Robinson. To start off, the result of prejudice is seen through Arthur Boo Radley. In the town of Maycomb County, Boo Radley is known of as a beast (or monster) for stabbing his father in the leg while he was making a scrapbook, among other things. Although this was not the best thing he could ve done, no one actually knows if there was a reason for him doing this and the citizens of Maycomb are not letting Arthur show what type of person he actually is. • 18. The Effects Of Climate Change On Earth Today Essay Climate change otherwise known as global warming has been an ongoing issue for decades. Beginning in the 19th century, climate change has increasingly affected Earth and its atmosphere. Rising levels of carbon dioxide are warming the Earth s atmosphere, causing rising sea levels, melting snow and ice, extreme fires and droughts, and intense rainfall and floods. Climate change has and will continue to affectfood production, availability of water, and can add to many health risks in humans and animals. In fact, in an article by Justin Gillis titled, Scientists Warn of Perilous Climate Shift Within Decades, Not Centuries he focuses on a paper written by a former NASA climate scientist, James E. Hansen, explaining the effects of climate change on Earth today. Although many believe Hansen s theories in the paper are quite far fetched, the author mentions, Despite any reservations they might have about the new paper, virtually all climate scientists agree with Dr. Hansen s group that society is not moving fast enough to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, posing grave risks (Gillis). Gillis validates the fact that climate change has been rapidly expanding throughout Earth and society has not been able to reduce it fast enough. Many negative risks are being posed and will continue to mount if the issue of climate change is not taken seriously. Although climate change negatively affects nearly all aspects of the Earth, it poses a big threat to agricultureand food production. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The persistence children learn while playing sports will carry on in other parts of life, such as learning in school, leading to continual success. • 21. Analysis Of Issac Asimov s I Robot Robots are a more important part of society now then they have ever been. Issac Asimov lived in a time where robots were merely an idea, but that didn t stop him from using this idea of a robot to represent different aspects of humanity throughout the chapters of his book I, Robot. Asimov s book reflects on human nature and what it means to be human. Reflecting can help people to better understand themselves and the people that surround them. One part of human nature that Asimov brings up is the idea that even lies with good intentions can cause harm. In I, Robot, one of the robots has the ability to read minds, but the first Law of Robotics does not allow robots to harm human in any way, including hurt feelings. Do you suppose that if I asked a question, it wouldn t give exactly that answer that one wants to hear? Wouldn t any other answer hurt us, and wouldn t Herbie know that? (Asimov 108). This robot was doing everything it could not to hurt any of the humans and it did this by lying to them. This is something that many people can relate to, whether it is lying to someone by telling them they threw a good party or that it couldn t be attended because of a fake appointment, telling the truth wouldn t benefit anyone. By recognizing that lying is a part of human nature, it can be understood why someone might choose to lie. SQLite does not work this way. With SQLite, the process that wants to access the database reads and writes directly from the database files on disk. There is no intermediary server process. There are advantages and disadvantages to being server less. I believe that this packing plant should fail their audit solely for the fact that the workers used electric prods on each and every animal that exited the trailer. The workers mentioned that it was against the packing plant s policy to use electric prods, but chose to use the prods anyway. This shows me that the plant has either failed in properly training their employees on how to properly unload livestock, or that the workers at the plant are negligent to the policies implemented and need to be dismissed from their ... During the late 90 s, when Gattaca was released, talks on gene manipulation were very serious. It was also around the time when the clone of Dolly the sheep was revealed to the public. In my opinion, Andrew Niccol had purposely released the film at that particular time to make realise the consequences of gene manipulation, to make parents most of all, realise what could happen. I think that at the end of the film, when Jerome commits suicide and Vincent is going up into space, is a very effective part in portraying the consequences of having a genetically modified child. However, the research indicated differences between the memory processes used by the hippocampus and amygdala in that prior researchers had found little evidence that protein degradation was a necessary part of the consolidation of memories in hippocampus. This led researchers to conclude that the amygdala and hippocampus may be more similar with regard to reconsolidation of memories than consolidation of memories. Analysis: Prior to reading the article, I had very little understanding of the importance of proteins in memory functions. I believed them to be most important with regard to enzymatic functioning and structural composition. However, the article indicates how incredibly important the minutiae of protein function are to a properly functioning memory. Based on protein function, researchers were able to control if and how much the rats were able to remember. The data do seem to support the authors conclusions. Protein degradation was measured by the presence of ubiquitin, which was a fairly accurate measurement tool. In addition, the researchers used an abundance of controlled groups in order to isolate the desired variable the combination of shock and auditory cue. Conclusions about the presence of elevated protein degradation are supported by the collected data from the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
