My First Day Of Math
I am writing to you to talk about the complicated semester I have had in Math.
Our first day of math we talked about the Handshake Problem. We needed to figure out how many
handshakes there would be in our class of sixteen students but we could not shake the same hands
twice. Our class got in a circle began to model out the problem by shaking each other s hand but
then we had to figure out a formula. A common method that I have used throughout the whole
semester is making a table. I made a table and was able to make the conclusion that the number of
handshakes were increasing by counting numbers. By that time class had ended and for
homework we needed to come up with a formula for this problem and reflect. When I first tried
to find an equation for this problem is 16 x 15 = 240. This equation did not work because I was
counting for shaking the same handshakes twice. If I would have divided it 240 by 2 I would
have got 120 and that would have been the correct answer. After careful discuss, in class and out
of class thinking our final conclusion was that the formula was n(n 1)/2. N is for the number of
people that come into the room. N 1 is the one less hand the next person will have to shake from
the previous person. This equation worked for any number of people that needed to shake hands.

In the book Black Like Me by John Howard Griffin the reader can experience life on the other
side of the color line through his words. John Howard Griffin was an author, more specifically
was a journalist and a specialist on race issues. His desire was to know if Southern whites were

for my research project because apothecaries use a lot of interesting objects, and were way different
than present day doctors and pharmacists.

Introduction
Congenital heart diseases (CHD) are defects in the heart that are present from birth and affect 8 in
every 1,000 newborns each year (National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, 2011). Hypertrophic
cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most common congenital disease of the heart (O Hanlon and
Pennell, 2009) and the most common cause of sudden cardiac death (SCD) among apparently
healthy athletes and younger generations (Maron, 1995; Maron and Maron, 2013). HCM is a
condition in which there is abnormal thickening of the myocardium in the left ventricle (LV), also
know as left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), where the heart is not dilated and there is no other
systemic or cardiac cause (Maron et al 2003; Maron et al 2006). Although many patients are
asymptomatic to HCM, some patient s will present with, or develop progressive exercise
intolerance, heart failure symptoms and SCD (Keren et al 2008).
The prevalence of HCM worldwide is 1:500 making it the most common heritable congenital heart
disorder (O Hanlon, 2010). Annual mortality rates for presenting patient s range from 1% within
the general community, to 3 6% from tertiary referral centres (Noureldin et al, 2012). This range
is most likely due to the fact that tertiary centres are specialist centres, and patients suspected to
have HCM would be referred straight to a tertiary centre. There is currently no evidence to suggest
that incidence or mortality is affected by gender (Maron et al, 2002).

racialized and gendered minority groups have been either underrepresented, misrepresented, or

Thomas Hobbes, John Locke and Jean Jacques Rousseau all claim an integral space in the realm of
political philosophy. Through their respective dissertations, each author analyzed man in his natural
state and derived a form of civil society from that conclusion. While each author observes man in
his own way and thus come to his own forms of subsequent government, equality seems to be a
