Imagery In Beowulf
The Old English epic poem of Beowulf, officially written down somewhere around the year 1066
by the Beowulf poet, is one where you are persistently kept of the edge of your seat due to its
superior use of vivid phrases and imagery. In the Anglo Saxon period in which the story takes place
bravery, heroic deeds, and loyalty to one another is paramount. Beowulf, a tenacious scandinavian
warrior, is the savior of a neighboring kingdom due to his aptness to slay the treacherous monsters
such as the nefarious Grendel and his mother. A truly remarkable feat is how the words and actions
of this poem are put to life in the movie. Though remarkable, the cinema didn t exactly correlate
with the poem. In fact the integrity of the poem almost seems diminished... Show more content on

At the feast, a Dane named Unferth, envious of his kinsmen s admiration of Beowulf, begins to
taunt the Geat. He claims that Beowulf once lost a swimming match against Breca and that
Beowulf will meet with defeat for a second time when he faces Grendel in the mead hall.
Mentioning the swimming race reassures that indeed Beowulf is indeed mortal and capable of
defeat comparatively than displaying him as immortal. When Grendel arrives to slay Hrothgar s
men, Beowulf battles with Grendel and manages to amputate Grendel s arm and shoulder to which
then Beowulf drapes his arm from the rafters of the great mead hall. The victory, for the proof,

Middle Childhood Research
During Middle Childhood, children have the capacity to achieve conservation. Conservation refers
to the child s ability to understand what things should look like despite changes that may occur
(Newman Newman, 2015). Therefore, children would have the ability to understand what a healthy
relationship should look like despite their peer being a different individual in each relationship they
have. During Middle Childhood, children experience the psychosocial crises of Industry versus
Inferiority. During this process, if the child feels they have adequate skills needed to make
friends they will be able to do so with ease. By doing so, the child would have resolved their crises

Per Bollmer et. al., (2005), having a high quality friendship can protect some children from
bullying because it gives the child an example of what a healthy relationship is and should look

relational bullying decreased. In addition, Malcolm et. al., (2006), found that the quality of the

A Look into Some Causes, Effects, and Possible Solutions of Deforestation in the Global
Environment
I.Introduction With society s demand and need for the earth s resources, deforestation has long
been a prevalent environmental issue at hand and has picked up significant momentum more
recently. Deforestation occurs around the world, however, according to GRID Arendal, it is most
prevalent in areas with tropical rainforests such as Brazil, Indonesia, Thailand, the Democratic
Republic of Congo and other parts of Africa, and parts of Eastern Europe (Szalay 1). For a
number of reasons, trees are being cleared at massive levels resulting in poor quality land and
have created negative effects and impacts on the global environment. Since deforestation is caused
by both human and natural factors such as wildfires and overgrazing, it is difficult to completely
pinpoint one cause ( Deforestation 1). However, researching and looking at which causes are most
impactful can help deduce possible solutions to help prevent unnecessary and excessive tree
clearing. It is important to look into solutions to help prevent deforestation because it is negatively
impacting the world s environment and making it difficult for certain animals, such as birds, and
even humans to maintain their standard of living and their quality of life. And so, in an attempt to
delve a bit deeper with regards to deforestation, this paper will

The Importance of Chariot Racing for the Romans Essays
The Importance of Chariot Racing for the Romans
Racing has been a pastime for humans ever since we were able to tame animals and since we have
had the technology to allowed us. There are so many forms of racing in the world today that have
been shaped through hundreds and thousands of years. What is it that attracts us to racing? Is it the
speed, potential crashes or even just the atmosphere? To answer this question many things have to
be considered.
To start with lets look at the start of the Rome, at the first celebration of the Consualia in honour of
Consus (an ancient god of agriculture) the rape of the Sabine Women is believed to have happened.
Romulus (founder of Rome) held chariot races ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

What the Romans had. However, if you ask someone how important say F1 racing was to them
they d probably say not too important but that is because we all have different acquired tastes. Back
then you had too like what was on offer otherwise you would have nothing! However there was still
some resistance to the entertainment on offer to the Romans, Pliny the Younger complains that
chariot racing is exactly the same all the time, he then expresses his frustration at the people who
do like it because they only like it because of the type of team It wouldn t be so bad if they
appreciated the horses speed or drivers skill. But all they see is the colour of the tunic . Some
direct evidence of the Roman way of life getting progressively involved in entertainment is that
gradually the amount of days dedicated to games per year rose quite significantly. By 100 BC,
six games had been held. In total this numbered about forty nine days dedicated to games per
year,by the end of the second century the number of days per year had reached one hundred thirty
five. That s not far from almost tripling in days over the space of 100

Gender Roles in Television Essay
Introduction
It is often said that the media and the arts are an accurate reflection of any given community. This
is especially true in American pop culture, where television shows depict the various stereotypes
attributed to men and women and the roles they play in society. House, a highly popular medical
drama that revolves around Dr. Gregory House and his diagnostic team, is a particularly good
example as it represents the true state of the traditional gender roles in American culture today by,
both, redefining and reinforcing them over the course of the show.
In Big Baby, the thirteenth episode of the current season, the show highlights these gender roles by
centering on the effects the recent adoption of Rachel has had on Dr. ... Show more content on

In Gender Role Behaviors and Attitudes, Aaron Devor sheds light on this stereotype:
Feminine characteristics are thought to be intrinsic to the female facility for childbirth and breast
feeding. Hence, it is popularly believed that the social position of females is biologically mandated
to be intertwined with the care of children and a natural dependency on men for the maintenance of
mother child units.
Dr. Cuddy s confusion and fears over raising her adopted daughter indicates a significant shift from
this centuries old stereotype ascribed to women a radical redefinition of traditional gender roles.
Mr. Sensitive
However, this redefinition is not limited to women alone. Dr. Wilson is perhaps the most
diplomatic, sensible, and level headed character in the entire show as he constantly strives to
broker a truce between the clashing personalities of Dr. Cuddy and Dr. House.
In this episode, he reveals his emotional and sensitive side as he attempts to console a tearful Dr.
Cuddy who was struggling with maternity. He returns to her house later on in the episode and
attempts to cheer her up by bringing Dr. Cuddy an age enhanced photograph of a teenage Rachel.
He tries to get her to understand that the motherly love develops over time. He then admits that the
photograph came with the frame and was not Rachel.

The word sustainable is very popular recent years. Many countries are trying to reduce the carbon
emission. They tried controlling the smoke of the car. They tried controlling the use of the electric
and recycle everything they can use again. However, the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of
buildings is more than either the transportation or industrial sectors. According to US Green
Building Council s research,In 2004, total emissions from residential and commercial buildings
were 2236 million metric tons of CO2, or 39% of total US. Also, buildings consume 70% of the
electricity load in the US.(USGBC) A building called Global Ecology Center reduced 72%
reduction in carbon emissions and 50% in embodied carbon for building materials. Global
Ecology Center is located in Stanford, and it was chosen as an AIA Committee on the
Environment Top Ten Green Project for 2007. The capacity is 10,900 ft2. It completed in March
2004. Global Ecology Center combined with laboratories and offices. It owned by and occupied

The Reliability Of Eyewitness Testimony
There are many different factors that play a part in the increased chance of a witness correctly
identifying a suspect. Such factors should be brought to the attention of the jury and the judge to
help in properly assessing whether a witness is correctly identifying a suspect. A study by
Magnussen, Melinder, Stridbeck, Raja (2010) found that of the three different types of people: judge
, jury, and general public, that for the most part all where fairly ill informed on the reliability of
eyewitness testimony with judges having the most. Judges only had about an 8% difference in
knowledge when compared to jurors. With this information it is very clear that education on the
reliability of eyewitness testimony needs to become more of a general knowledge information for
the everyone, especially people who are involved in upholding the law. Another factor to look into
when evaluating the accuracy eyewitness testimony is the role that memory plays. Memory is
divided into three processes: perceiving, remembering, and recalling information (Simmonsen,
2013). There is plenty of room in all three of those stages to forget or falsely remember something.
Some factors that play a part when a person perceives an event is the amount of time they are
exposed to the event and the suspect. A study conducted by Horry, Halford, Brewer, Milne, Bull.
(2014) found that witnesses were increasingly more likely to correctly identify a suspect if they
had been exposed to the suspect for sixty

Roy Lichtenstein Drowning Girl Essay
Critical Analysis Drowning Girl By Roy Lichtenstein (1963)
A Critical Art Analysis of Roy Lichtenstein s Drowning Girl (1963) Painting
Roy Lichtenstein s Drowning Girl is one of the most renowned pieces of art produced by the
American artist. The painting that was created by the artist in the year 1963 on a 67 5/8 x 66 3/4
canvas is contained in the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City, and is one of the
most viewed modernistic pieces of art in the museum (MoMA). The Drowning Girl painting
depicts a crying lady in an ocean wave, with a thought bubble used by the artist to depict the
distress of the girl through the words I don t care! I d rather sink than call Brad for help! More

The message of heartbreak in the art is reflected in words contained in the thought bubble and
the tears which reveal that the girl in the picture might have been in a romantic relationship with
a man named Brad, who broke her heart. Even more clearly, the title Drowning girl, adds to the
meaning of the piece of art by suggesting to the viewer that the girl may be drowning in ocean
waves. The maneuver of a girl in distress in the painting further points to the deep interest of Roy
Lichtenstein in the pain that women go through after heartbreaks. Notably, evidence suggests
that as a follower of Picasso, Lichtenstein might have been inspired by the former s frequent use
of images of crying women to paint the Drowning Girl (Schneider 142). Overall, the use of
ocean waves by the author symbolizes distress, as well the vast amount of tears that the
heartbreak might have induced which arouse empathy in the viewer. Although the girl seems to
lie in peace with her head on the water like a pillow, the submergence of the rest of her body in
water appears to communicate her dire need for assistance. Thus, I would say that the piece of art
reminds me of the importance of being considerate of the feelings of fellow humans, especially for
people in romantic

If the government announces any definite measures which would either lead to broadening of the tax
base or increase in tax compliance, a modest increase in revenue cannot be rule out. However,
development in tax buoyancy could only result from bringing about structural changes in the tax
structure such as implementation of GST and DTC. We also expect the government to take a
strong stance on some of the impending tax related disputes relating to retrospective changes to tax
laws, transfer pricing laws and General Anti Avoidance Rules (GAAR). We would also expect the
government to give a clear outline of its intentions on disinvestment which would also help in

With consistent persuasion from John, Mary agrees to talk to the Mr. Danforth, the judge over

have integrity. Regret, accompanied with pity, assists Mary in convincing Mr. Danforth but it
does not work in her favor because he does not want to backtrack on previous convictions made.
Feelings of regret are very influential in determining a persons actions. Miller uses Mary, who
has now shown to be morally uncertain, as a scapegoat for all the girls who are fabricating

The Research Of Wings Wing Motion
1.1 The Research of Flapping Wing Motion
Flapping wing motion is observed from biological flying animals. Most scientist, biologists and
naturalists are attracted by this motion and have found over a million different species of insects
and 10,000 types of birds and bats fly with flapping wings [1]. In 1490, Leonardo da Vinci made a
flapping wings vehicle, also called ornithopter as shown in Figure 1.1, to explain and demonstrate
the theory of thrust generated from flapping wings. A huge amount of attempts to develop flying
vehicles were made at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th (Lilienthal, 1889; Lippisch,
1960) [2, 3], but most of them failed due to insufficient academic knowledge.
The result of one attempt was Knoller [5] and Betz [6] demonstrated the flapping wings generate
both thrust and lift of the aerodynamic force, also found motion correlations between wingspan,
flapping frequency, weight. According to Prandtl s formulation, Birnbaum [7] developed the first
analytical methods for calculating thrust and efficiencies of flat plates in pitching motion in
moderate frequencies. After a couple of decades, the research of flapping wing became more
detailed and wider, people observed that the operation of flapping wing is limited by objects
itself. Some kinds of large birds such as hawks, their wings are fixed while soaring or gliding. But
for the smaller birds and insects, they continuously flap in highly frequency in order to lift their
whole body. In

commercial whaling became illegal in 1931 (Matera 3). I found out that the United States actually
whaled at some point but it was not for the meat, it was for the whale oil. During the eighteenth and
nineteenth centuries, whaling started to become a problem. During this time Japan started to be the
main whaling country, this is when everything flipped upside down ( Greenpeace Says Japan

When reading Veiled Sentiments, I got the impression that the existing social hierarchy among the
Awlad Ali was based on gender, age, wisdom, and wealth, Women are always dependent, and

members epitomized by the helpless infant, and by extension all children. (p.80 81) Abu Lughod
did a good job depicting the ways that the social hierarchy works, by including terminology such as
wliyya, and by vividly describing situations where women, and children seemed weaker than the
adult males in the community, who in most situations appeared to be the head of households. The
author also goes further into the ideals of the Awlad Ali by discussing the relations between female
modesty (hasham), natural inferiority , and sexuality. She depicts the ideal woman in the eyes of
the Bedouin people, describing her as soft spoken, and well behaved, and with no open thoughts on
sexuality. Apart from discussing the importance of hasham in a woman, Abu Lughod points out that
emotion of love and affection between men and women is a taboo. Men that show emotion
towards a woman are seen to be weak and are shunned upon by their male peers, as well as women
in the community. Women claim, for instance, that real men control all their dependents and beat
their wives when the wives do stupid things ( p.89) . In

/ Snatched up thirty men, smashed them... Without many other forms of entertainment, during the
era of the Anglo Saxons, bards memorized thousands of lines of poems; the alliteration within
Beowulf satisfies the listener. During Beowulf s battle with the dragon, the writer establishes
that for the first time in his life that famous prince / Fought with fate against him (l. 723 24). The
repetition of the f sound amuses the readers once again. Within the original poem written in Old
English every line of the poem contained four beats. The Old English version of Beowulf also
contained a pause within most lines; poets refer to this pause as a caesura. When Beowulf is
rebutting Unferth s false statements, he creates a caesura: You murdered your brothers, / Your
own close kin. Words and bright wit / Won t help your soul; you ll suffer hell s fires, / Unferth,
forever tormented (l. 320 23). The location of the pauses within this particular caesura produce
great emotion, yet the lines contain extremely simple phrases. In addition to caesuras, Beowulf
embodies a countless amount of kennings. Grendel acquires an abundance of kennings throughout
the poem. The writer refers to Grendel as: That shadow of death (l. 74), or That shepherd of evil,
guardian of crime (l. 432). The writer

Essay on Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion
Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion Ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) utilizes the
natural temperature difference in tropical regions to generate electricity. The idea of using the
ocean to generate electricity was proposed by a French physicist by the name of Jacques Arsene
d Arsonval in 1881. Georges Cluade who was one of d Arsonval students, built the first OTEC
power plant in Cuba. Cluade also built a second power plant in 1935 on a 10,000 ton cargo ship
which was moored off the coast of Brazil. Unfortunate events with weather and waves caused both
facilities to be destroyed before either could be net generators. The United States became interested
in OTEC technology in 1974 and built the Natural EnergyLaboratory of Hawaii Authority... Show

The steam then boils the low point boiling fluid, which drives the turbine to produce electricity. The
hybrid combined the vacuum portion of the open cycle system and uses the low point boiling fluid
like the closed cycle system. Unfortunately, there is no mass energy production for the Ocean
Thermal Energy Conversion but there has been a successful attempt in 1979, when Lockheed
Martin successfully built and operated over a three month period a net power mini OTEC
system which generated 50 kilowatts of net power off the Big Island of Hawaii. But the United
States is not the only country who is invested into OTEC systems, Japan has currently a closed
system OTEC plant that has generated 31.5 kilowatts of power during tests. The positives of the
OTEC system is monumental. Even if one tenth of one percent of the solar energy trapped by
the oceans could be converted into electricity, It would generate twenty times the amount of
electricity the United States use everyday. It could easily supply all the energy we wanted, said
Terry Penney, a lab program manager at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden,
Colo. The process is very low efficiency, just 2 or 3 or 4 percent, but all that energy s free. (qtd. in

Canadian Political Culture Essay
Canadian Political Culture, in a nation state context, can be break down as beliefs and attitudes that
Canadian have of political objects( Jackson, Politics in Canada.1994).
The majority of Canadians normally hold similar political notion that, unlike firm beliefs that varies
in due time, are more widespread and are considered as the base for political culture. It is these
values and attitudes that Canadian citizens share that compose the heart of Canada nation state
political culture system. The political culture in general demands other things such as regional or
even linguistic aspects to be able to fully explain Canadian society and how it sees politics;
nevertheless for this paper, it will only focus on the similarities that Canadian share in their political
attitudes of a nation culture as a whole. It will talk about on the likeness of thought that
differentiate them from other countries. To be able to understand Canada political culture, one has
to understand some historical events that straightening the view point of those living in Canada.
Canada is most of the time seen as a multi cultural country, a country that is built on two society and

An Unlikely Friendship Between Olivier Nakache And Eric...
Mobility, as a theme, is central to the plot of Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano s 2011 film Les
Intouchables . Although from different backgrounds, the two central characters are both, in their
own way, immobile. Driss, played by Omar Sy, suffers social immobility. Living in the banlieues
of Paris (an impoverished and often ignored area, the name for which has become pejorative,
meaning slums dominated by immigrants ), he has many social barriers which he must
transcend. The immobility of the aristocratic, quadriplegic and millionaire Phillipe, who lives in
a large expensive house in a wealthy part of Paris, is not social but physical. Phillipe, portrayed
by François Cluzet, has to live his life in a wheelchair due to a paragliding accident which left
him paralysed many years ago. The tale of an unlikely friendship between two men from opposite
milieu which follows creates an interesting filmin which numerous boundaries, both social and
physical, are seen to be transcended. This essay will discuss how the theme of mobility is
represented by directors Nakache and Toledano in Les Intouchables , including a particular focus on
the techniques used to highlight this theme throughout.
This can be seen, firstly, in the deliberate selection of the actors used to portray Driss and Phillipe
in order to highlight the theme of mobility in the film. Omar Sy, an actor of Senegalese descent,
was chosen to play the part of Driss in the true story inspiration upon which

Guidelines And Suggestions For A Recommendation
Introduction
Having a well known and standard process to create a policy or procedure is crucial in an
organization. The lack of one could lead to confusion and hindrance in the implementation of a
potentially necessary process. In many organizations, however, there is room for improvement.
Recommendations and suggestions should be encouraged, as they can aid in the success of these
plans. It is not enough, though, to simply suggest improvements. Action must be taken on the
suggestions, or they will likely remain unchanged. Succeeding this, once a recommendation has
been implemented, and organization must implement some way of measuring the status of it. This
paper focuses on the metrics Organization A uses to measure the success of a recommendation. All
opinions expressed in this paper are that of the author unless otherwise specified. The policy
development process in Organization A is contingent upon what department a policy affects. For
example, if the Accounting department needs to develop a process that handles, for example,
sending a report to a supervisor, then the procedure simply must be worked out within the
department. In this example, the policy may not be written down; it may just be understood and
common practice. However, if the Accounting department found the need to implement a policy
that specified how all employees must handle expense reports, then this must be decided by the
core business unit (BU) leaders.

Piet Mondrian
Gray Tree
The Gray Tree is an oil painting created by Piet Mondrian. This was painted in 1911 using a thick
type of oil on canvas. This process would of taken weeks or months due to its thick layers of paint,
even though this was a long process, the motions of the brush strokes look very quick and vivid.
This painting can be found at Gemeente museum in Den Haag.
Analysis
This contemporary painting by Piet Mondrian is almost eerie looking, somewhat releasing a
ghostly essence. This painting makes me feel somewhat scared, but also intrigued, like there is a
story behind this, or like someone or something is going to come out from behind the tree.

In the following years, he would rely on these skills to support himself by producing scientific
drawings and copies of museum paintings.
For Mondrian, art and philosophy were deeply intertwined. He was a prolific writer and theorist,
and was drawn to spiritual and philosophical studies. In 1908, he joined the Theosophical Society, a
spiritual organization with widespread influence in Europe that eventually connected to the New
Age Movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Though he later parted from the group, Theosophy
influenced Mondrian s utopian ideals which found expression in the balance and tension of form
and color in his paintings.
Always further, is how Mondrian termed his drive to transform his artwork. Starting in 1905, his
traditional landscape compositions began to reveal a new sense of drama and light. Jan Toorop, a
leading artist of Dutch Luminism, introduced Mondrian to the French Post Impressionists.
Mondrian s paintings changed dramatically as a result, integrating, for example, the bold color and
brushwork of Van Gogh and the pointillist technique of Georges Seurat.
Mature Period
The influence of Cubism marked a turning point in Mondrian s career. He became familiar with
the works of Picasso, Braque and others, and moved to Paris in 1912 which was, at the time, the
thriving center of the avant garde art world. Cubism gave Mondrian the structure to distill his
landscapes to their essence: he made use of the Cubist grid structure, reducing his

The statue reflects the sculptural research of the late Hellenistic Period: classical in essence,
with innovatory features such as the spiral composition, the positioning in space, and the fall of

Cyclades. The Marquis de RiviГЁre presented it to Louis XVIII, who donated it to the Louvre the

The Importance Of Social Cohesion
Australia flourishes in an environment of a variety of cultures. We pertain to the ideas of
acceptance and understanding of individuals that have the intention to become apart of team
Australia. But what do we know Australia as? A community of equal citizens Abbott declares
(The Conversation, 2014). We can all assume that we as individuals idealise a country of equity
and equality in all aspects of life, whether it be race, gender, beliefs or political views. In a world
where we want fairness and equality, we coin the concept of social and cultural cohesion, which can
be defined as the ties that hold people together (Humanrights.gov.au, 2017). Moreover, social
cohesion is regarded as a shared vision, and is a process rather than an outcome
(Scanlonfoundation.org.au, 2017). Jenson hypothesised a framework that identifies the
importances of social cohesion between individuals. He states that the disruption of social cohesion
effects dimensions of belonging, legitimacy, recognition, participation and inclusion (Study.com,
2017). In contrast to this we come across an unwanted prejudice and discrimination towards certain
aspects of life. We define this as cultural conflict, the conflict that occurs when different cultural
values and beliefs clash with opposing values and beliefs (LeBaron, 2003). In regards to Jenson s
framework of social cohesion, cultural conflict revolves around the five dimension. With disruption
to this, views are altered into a more negative outlook,

Adverts R Us Analysis
I will begin with the commentary Advertisements R Us , by Melissa Rubin. I agree, somewhat,
that advertising is a way to hook the consumers. Of course, that is how they expect to sell their
product. When a company wants to market their product, they will advertise it to appeal to a variety
of consumers. They will try to convince the consumers that they must have the product they are
marketing. I do agree with the writer that maybe at some point in time, marketing a product was
geared towards specific types of consumers. Perhaps, those consumers may have been the only
type of people that could afford to spend the money to purchase the product that was being
marketed. Back in those days, having a Coca Cola was a luxury, and most households only had
one income. Now a days, it is fair game for everyone because we have a more diverse
community. More jobs are available to all races and genders, and two income households are now
necessary to make ends meet. According to the writer in the commentary, it sounds like the
advertisement was somewhat partial. It does not appear to have people from other ethnic groups. I
cannot imagine that Coca Cola would intentionally leave out specific types of people since they
were a popular manufacturer in those days, of course, that is just my opinion.... Show more content

the past 15 years, the battlefield has been in the open desert and urban environments. The
geographical locations where the United States have fought their wars have had a demand for
armored troop vehicles. The Bradley Fighting Vehicle (BFV) has met and exceeded that demand
since 1981. With the possible new threat in Eastern Europe, there is a more demand to have a
solid armored troop carrier in the Army s arsenal. The Bradley is the right vehicle for the current
and possible future threats. The Army wants to erase the M2A3 BFV from its inventory and
replace it with a new and improved fighting vehicle. Replacing the Bradley without doing an
effective cost analysis would be a huge loss to the Army s budget plan. This would be
detrimental especially when the Bradley is not the only vehicle program the Army is trying to

time. Background Between 1950 and 1960, the Army was developing a plan to transport infantry
troops in a specialized armored vehicle. The first transport vehicle was the M113. This vehicle
would transform over the years until 1981 when the Bradley Fighting Vehicle was introduced into

Essay On White Fragility
Implicit in the act of being honest is to be upfront, even righteous and to be without intent to lie
or cheat. Honestly is often followed with some sort of commitment to a stance that correlates
with what one is being truthful about. Because this commitment implies action, one might
seriously consider whether honestly is a safe position to be taken. We are often hesitant to be
truthful about things we have been given yet not earned especially when they have contributed
to our successes. Money that was inherited as opposed to earned is one such example. The
lifestyle afforded because of inheritance is not because of hard work or intellectual superiority
but rather a good fortune. In the United States, the color of our skin is another example of
something inherited, not earned, yet affords people certain advantages or disadvantages. What
we are handed is even more coveted it when there is a risk of losing it. Although we cannot lose
skin color, the inherited gifts which go along with it, protected by white fragility, could be lost.
Robin DiAngelo (2011) describes White fragility in her article entitled, White Fragility , as a state
in which even a small amount of racial tension is stressful and with the response to this stress
being some form of defensiveness. White fragility aims to protect the experience of whiteness,
something coveted. The experience of whiteness is discussed thoroughly by Sara Ahmed (2007),
in her article entitled, A phenomenology of whiteness . Ahmed considers whether the experience
of whiteness should be revealed as an actual thing that takes up space, orientates bodies, functions
as a habit and serves as the background to social action (p.149). She references Fine, Weis, Powell
and Wong s view of whiteness as an essential something (p.149). If whiteness is real then there may
be a risk in being honest about it and the ways we conceal it. The question is whether it is safe, to
be honest, and expose white fragility in its most naked form. Acknowledging whiteness and white
privilege assumes we (whites) notice inequality. Another way of understanding white fragility is
resistance through ignorance about an inequality that is actually meaningful yet necessary to
protect if whites

The Impact Of Payroll Tax
Oct 3, 2014 The Impact of Payroll Tax
Payroll taxes are the federal tax and the state tax contributed by the employer and employee to
finance health care, pension, benefits for disability and compensation for the injured employee.
Pay roll tax falls under two categories: one deduction from the employee s wage and another is
based on employee s wage paid by the employer. In the first kind of payroll tax, employer reserve
certain fraction of their employee s earning s. It is also known as pay as you go tax (PAYG) or
pay as you earn tax (PAYE). One the other hand, in the second kind the employer s pays the tax

employer normally covers the employer s finance of the social security system, Medicare, and
other insurance programs. The US government charges two distinct payroll taxes in labor wage.
The first tax is a 12.4 percent to fund the social security in which the first dollar an individual
earns in income up to a cap of $117,000 in 2014. Each year the cap is adjusted to the change in
the wage. Both the employer and employees share the equal burden in the tax i.e. 50 percent

Essay on Bilingual Education in American Schools
Suppose your child has been moved to China. Your child does not speak Chinese; is it the school
system s responsibility to teach your child in English? Or should your child be expected to learn
in the country s language and perhaps get extra help on the side? Why should a school district
spend money on bilingual classes rather than on reducing class sizes?
In the United States of America we have become a large melting pot of ethnic and cultural peoples.
Along with these peoples have come many different languages and alphabets. However the US has
been seen as a mostly English speaking country. Yet many of this country s newcomers do not
speak English. Adults and children alike come into the US speaking and writing only their ... Show

(LA Times 1998) this can create a large gap in understanding between the student and her
classmates.
Many try to argue that there needs to be made allowances for these children. One example is the
Spanish speaking community. In the 1998 census, Hispanics represented about 14.6 million of the
population. With in five years they represented 16.9 and were expected to represent between 23.1
and 26.9 of the United States population by the year 2000. (From Community to College p.390) A
lot of educators feel that there needs to be bilingual classes to accommodate this growing Hispanic
community.
Another great example of school funds being used to accommodate non English speaking children
was in the state of Massachusetts, from Reason Magazine .
In Massachusetts, school officials actually created an alphabet so that Kriolu an obscure spoken
only dialect of Portuguese used in parts of the Cape Verde Islands could be written for the first
time. Textbooks and a curriculum followed, and now Massachusetts boasts the only schoolsin the
entire world where classes are taught in Kriolu. (The unenlightened schools of the Cape Verde
Islands continue to teach in Portuguese.) Massachusetts even sends home report cards and school
bulletins in Kriolu. The parents have no idea whatsoever what this stuff says none of them can read
Kriolu but their opinion hardly

Tragic Characters from Antigone
Tragic Characters from Antigone
The story of Antigone begins with the death of Oedipus. His sons Polyneices and Eteocles
battled against each other for control of the city Thebes, which resulted in the death of both of
them. Creon, brother of Iocasta and uncle of Oedipus, becomes the king. He declared an
honorable burial for Eteocles, who fought for Thebes, and no burial for Polyneices since he fought
against Thebes. Antigone tells Ismene, her sister of Polyneices s fate, and that he deserves to be
buried regardless if Ismene joins her. Antigone does bury her brother, going against her sister s
warning about Creon killing whoever touches Polyneices body. A Sentry tells Creon hat someone
has done some burial cremations Polyneices, and Creon tells him to find the person who is
responsible. A Sentry sees Antigone spreading dust over Polyneices s body, allowing his body to
take its place in Hades, and brings her to Creon. When Ismene found out Antigone was caught by
Creon, she asks to share in Antigone s guilt, but Antigone doesn t allow her. Creon s son Haimon
tries to reason with his father saying he should be fair and restraint. Creon ignores his son and
sends Antigone to the tomb. Teiresias, a blind prophet, also tries to warn Creon of the god s anger
towards him and that an unpleasant fate will happen. Again Creon ignores the warning and insults
Teiresias. When Teiresias left, Creon tried to think of a time when he was wrong and he couldn t.
So Creon decided he would

Essay on Prion Diseases
Prion Diseases
Abstract
Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) are neurodegenerative diseases that are thought
to be caused by the misfolding of prion proteins. Prions are able to replicate in the absence of
nucleic acids. TSEs include: scrapie, bovine spongiform encephalopathy, Creutzfeldt Jakob disease,
kuru, Gerstmann Straussler Scheinker disease, and Fatal Familial Insomnia. They can affect many
different animals, including humans. Currently, there are no ways to diagnose, treat, or cure TSEs,
as much more research is needed before these diseases are completely understood.

Prions are a type of protein found naturally in the brain and other regions of the central nervous
system. The diseases associated with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

2. The Prion Protein and Its Function
The prion protein (PrP) is unusual in that it has two stable isoforms. The cellular or normal form
of the prion protein is termed PrPC, while the disease form is termed PrPSC. Sharing the same
sequence of amino acids, or primary structure, PrPC and PrPSC differ in their secondary,
tertiary, and quaternary structures. The normal prion protein has N and C terminals, three alpha
helices, and two beta sheets (Soto, 2006, 40). Its function is still not completely understood.
However, scientists have found evidence that point to various possibilities. 1) Because most
PrPC are located in lipid rafts, membrane structures involved in signaling, it is suggested that
PrPC may also be a mediator in neuroprotective signaling pathways. 2) Interaction between PrPC
and Bcl 2, a ligand involved in protecting neurons from apoptosis, suggests the possibility that
PrPC may be an antiapoptotic protein. 3) PrPC has also been linked to copper metabolism in the
brain. In one particular study, PrP knockout mice, or mice that were genetically altered to not
express PrP, were found to have lower levels of copper in their brains and higher levels in their
serum (Soto, 2006, 42). However, in other studies with PrP knockout mice, most of the animals did
not display any obvious disorders, and those that did were found to have been affected by the
increase in concentration of another protein known as doppel.

Example Of Stereotyping
STEREOTYPING Stereotyping is a common attitude that has been adopted by many people.
Stereotyping means to generalize a whole group of people (nationality, gender, religion,
ethnicity, race etc) based on one or few experiences or having preconceived notions and opinions
about people without sound reasoning. It is like assigning standards to people based on their
gender, race, ethnicity and religion. I believe that this is a basic form of injustice as people are
not being recognized for who they really are. This can also cloud the judgment of people, for
example an experiment was conducted in which a white boy was stealing and a black boy was
also stealing, but the theft of the black boy induced more of a reaction while the white boy just

A brief summary of the events leading up to the case provided through the University of Phoenix
materials includes King s involvement in email communications with Larkin, the mother of a 2
year old girl who would later be abused by King sexually. Because Larkin and the child, known as
Peanut , were residing in King s residence, law enforcement would serve an arrest warrant there
against Larkin and to rescue Peanut from abuse by her caretakers. King walked the officers to
Larkin, who willingly gave up her computer to investigators. King objected that his hard drive
was in her computer and did not give permission for officers to take it, but they did so regardless
of his objections. King would later be connected to further criminal activity and willingly went to
speak with law enforcement, where he made admissions to his involvement. King would later try to
have his admission and other evidence obtained through investigating Larkin as well hidden when
he was charged and faced trial for his crimes (University, 2016).
In regard to the 4th Amendment, King asserted that the police violated the Fourth Amendment
when they entered his house on February 19, 2004 and seized his hard drive without a warrant or
his consent (FindLaw, 2016). Because the owner of the computer hardware was disputing the
legality of its removal from someone else s property without his permission, King

go to get away from our jobs and everyday duties. It is the place where we can sit and think the
best. A place where nothing matters but what is in that little moment. This place is called the
beach. A trip to the beach can be successful if you make the right preparations and find activities
to do during the day and night. The beach can be a fun adventure, but there are a lot of
preparations that must be made. First, we must make sure the car is in working order with a full
tank of gas. Second, we should make the reservations and have appropriate directions or G.P.S on

the night out. We stray away from the beach and walk to the strip, as are feet can feel the bass
thumping music as cars go up and down the strip. We are then attracted to loud music and
flashing lights as the nightclubs fill up with people dancing and drinking margaritas. After the

Analysis Of The Poem Waiting At Come Onstage
Waiting to come onstage is one of the most terrifying experiences one can have. Knowing that in
around three or so minutes you will be called onstage to be judged and viewed by an awaiting
crowd of your peers strikes you to the core and puts the familiar pang of pressure and anxiety
straight into your stomach. Which takes us to the beginning of our story; enter, me, in a blonde
shoulder length wig. I am dressed in a flowing white shirt, laced with frills and puffed sleeves.
Atop my shirt lays my purple velvet cape, a cape which is made out of the same material which is
present without my purple pantaloons and my purple cap. I am Archibald, the Alright; an Idylic
and Aesthetic poet, about to secure the love of my life, Patience. I am sweating, and my heart is
beating out of my chest.
Now, in approximately one minute, I will enter the stage, and immediately begin singing a duet with
my actor partner for the night. After this song, we will speak our dialogue and then exit the stage. A
simple concept, but an experience that can wrack the mind and senses should anything go wrong,
should your flow be interrupted, or should you freeze. My lips flutter and frenzy as I mentally live
each scene in vivid detail.

The process is accentuated by my anxious fiddling with the lily precariously placed within my

Signs Of The Deaf Community Sign Language
American Sign Language There are thousands of languages spoken all over the world and
hundreds spoken across the United States of America, but what about the language that isn t
technically spoken? The ability to speak in order to communicate is a privilege that most forget
they have. Imagine the struggle of the injustice a person was served losing their ability to hear or
speak normally. It s heartbreaking because communication is so vital to a person s life. However,
imagine a system that allows these people to communicate without much problem. This system is
actually classified as its own languageand it s called Sign Language. Sign Language a language that
helps many with disabilities, and those who don t have disabilities, communicate with each other.
However, despite its huge impact on the deaf community Sign Language still has some room for
improvement. Just like other languages though, there isn t just one form of sign language. There
are many types and variations of sign language based on environment and location. But the most
commonly used and most commonly heard of would be American Sign Languageor ASL for short.
For the purpose of this essay, we ll be discussing American Sign Language. Sign Language dates
all the way back to 1620 when a man named Juan Pablo Bonet wrote a series of essays on what
he believed be the appropriate manner of communication with the deaf. His essays showed his own
system of language for the deaf including an alphabet and a series of

The growth and development of towns and city states played a significant role in the social changes
during the High Middle Ages. This essay will primarily focus on how the societies of secular Italian
medieval states like Venice, Genoa and Florence flourished and evolved through their pioneering
advances in craft and trade, as well as discussing towns and independent cities of the Holy Roman
Empire.

Venice on the other hand democratically elected their first Doge as an opponent to Byzantine rule
in 726 AD and was gaining momentum as a de facto independent republic throughout the eighth

communal organisation and a middle class population. Given that Venice was a republic
democracy, its society benefited from having a voice whereas citizens from neighbouring
kingdoms had no such privilege. *MAYBE SOMETHING ABOUT COMMUNAL

Essay On Detective Fix
Detective Fix more than an annoying character All villains are antagonists, but not all antagonists
are villains. In classic literature, the purpose of an evil character is to create a triumphant ending for
the good one. In Jules Vern s, literature Around the World in Eighty Days, the antagonist characters
possesses much more than simply being the villain in pursuance of the protagonist to impede their
clichГ© happy ending. Detective Fix a tenacious and stubborn character presents much more than
an antagonistfated to meet his doom in the end. Fix appears to impel the plot; diverting the
sequence of events to satisfy his interests, rather than emerging as a complement to valor.
However, without his efforts, the account of the journey would be predictable, depriving the
readers of suspense and anticipation towards the end of the story. His endeavor throughout the
narrative was to arrest the famed bank robber who he believes is Fogg. His in the entire journey
proves the complexity of his disposition. To understand Detective Fix s role, the reader must
overlook his malicious intents and misdeeds to observe him beyond the image of an antagonist in
classic literature. Detective Fix is a flawed man who struggles to recognize his sense of morality
because of false determination and greed. Detective fix... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Phillis Wheatley, Olaudah Equiano, And Frederick Douglass...
Proposition(s) centered around body of works authored by African Americans often fluctuate with
the social stratification of its people. The writing is not stagnant bound to warranted eons, but fluid
with time, as generally as any other form of literature. In other words, African American writing
tends to reflect that of the current society they are subjected to, among a number of other
conditions. In the 1800 s, prior to the dawning of the Civil War, Black publication, in its diminutive
amount, consisted roughly of memoirs, of which recounted the perils of slaveryand the bliss
circumvention, in turn, creating the earliest form of Black literature, slave narratives. In their own
time and thereafter, said narratives have been the object of much scrutiny of both damning and
plauditory natures. The authors of the works serve as no exception to such, considering each have
received perlustration from their kinsmen and their counterparts, alike. Phillis Wheatley, Olaudah
Equiano, and Frederick Douglass are examples of said Black authors, being that all have been
accused of spiritually fleeing their raceand relinquishing their Black identity. In regards to the act
of one fleeing their own race, one must be consciously aware of what race is. Race is defined as a
concept used in the categorization of humans into groups, based on combinations of shared physical
traits, ancestry, genetics, and social or cultural traits. In reality, it plays a decisive role in the

The Importance Of Racial Inequality
Social inequality is a recurring problem throughout, not only the country, but the world. There are
all kinds of inequalities throughout the world, and without any person or thing creating
awarenesses this will induce more pandemonium. With that being said, in order to terminate
racial inequality, people that are capable of bringing awareness to it need to start producing
familiarity locally because it will suddenly erupt onto a more global impact. When analyzing
how starting to bring awareness to social inequities and raise awareness at a local level can turn
global and change the world, one who explores the specifics of racial discrimination can aware
others about the dangers and results of this certain inequality. Politics, professional athletes
protesting, and media discrimination are ways people have been making local awareness a global
reality. In the end, with more and more awareness, more and more people will help end inequalities
throughout the world. To begin, awareness of global issues within politics happen all of the time;
therefore, bringing awareness to racial inequality within politics will spread globally and change the
world. Racial discrimination occurring inside of the American government is between Donald
Trump and the Mexican culture. The most emphasized facts Trump stated throughout his campaign
and carried through his presidency is to build a wall on the border of the United States and Mexico,
keeping all illegal immigrants out of the country.

for special applications such as in steel mills, mines and electric trains, it is advantageous to

Peer Review Strengths And Weaknesses
Peer review is more than just reading someone s paper and tell them if it s good or bad. It s
about explaining them what their weaknesses and strengths are. It can also help you as a writer
by giving you ideas of how to put stuff together in your essay. Personally, I believe that I was
really engaged when it came to peer reviewing. I truly appreciated the criticism and honesty of
my peers and I hope that they feel the same way about me. I tried to explain to them what was
wrong with each page step by step and what are some of their weaknesses and strengths.
Reviewing papers can be really hard for multiple reasons. The major one is because I don t like
telling others that they re doing something wrong, or because sometimes I just don t agree with
their point of view, an example of this is the RPP of my peer Jeffrey. Jeffrey believes that
legalizing marijuana would be beneficial to communities and even though I disagree with him I
still manage to give him a good review and gave him some sources that may help his claim.
Although, I find it hard to review someone s paper sometimes, it is way easier ... Show more content

This means that they would not be specific enough, they would just write something to get a grade,
or they would simply turn their peer review late. There is no much I can do when this happens
because I understand that most of us have pretty busy lives so they don t really have time to review
other people s paper. So what I do is wait for professor s King review and make corrections based
on his opinion, or ask one of my friends who like to read and write to review for me. Something
that I would like to say about my experience with peer reviewing in 1302 is that I never felt
insulted by no one which was great. I believe that if I were to get insulted in a peer review I would
have to take it as a different type of review since everyone has a different way to express

  • 2. Imagery In Beowulf The Old English epic poem of Beowulf, officially written down somewhere around the year 1066 by the Beowulf poet, is one where you are persistently kept of the edge of your seat due to its superior use of vivid phrases and imagery. In the Anglo Saxon period in which the story takes place bravery, heroic deeds, and loyalty to one another is paramount. Beowulf, a tenacious scandinavian warrior, is the savior of a neighboring kingdom due to his aptness to slay the treacherous monsters such as the nefarious Grendel and his mother. A truly remarkable feat is how the words and actions of this poem are put to life in the movie. Though remarkable, the cinema didn t exactly correlate with the poem. In fact the integrity of the poem almost seems diminished... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At the feast, a Dane named Unferth, envious of his kinsmen s admiration of Beowulf, begins to taunt the Geat. He claims that Beowulf once lost a swimming match against Breca and that Beowulf will meet with defeat for a second time when he faces Grendel in the mead hall. Mentioning the swimming race reassures that indeed Beowulf is indeed mortal and capable of defeat comparatively than displaying him as immortal. When Grendel arrives to slay Hrothgar s men, Beowulf battles with Grendel and manages to amputate Grendel s arm and shoulder to which then Beowulf drapes his arm from the rafters of the great mead hall. • 3. Middle Childhood Research During Middle Childhood, children have the capacity to achieve conservation. Conservation refers to the child s ability to understand what things should look like despite changes that may occur (Newman Newman, 2015). Therefore, children would have the ability to understand what a healthy relationship should look like despite their peer being a different individual in each relationship they have. During Middle Childhood, children experience the psychosocial crises of Industry versus Inferiority. During this process, if the child feels they have adequate skills needed to make friends they will be able to do so with ease. By doing so, the child would have resolved their crises and would not feel inferior to others. In addition, the child would... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... al., (2005), found that children who had a high quality best friendship, were less likely to become and participate in bullying behaviors than those children who have a lower quality best friendship. Per Bollmer et. al., (2005), having a high quality friendship can protect some children from bullying because it gives the child an example of what a healthy relationship is and should look like. Malcolm et. al., (2006), found that as the quality of equal friendships increased both overt and relational bullying decreased. In addition, Malcolm et. al., (2006), found that the quality of the friendships is a predictor of lower levels of bullying. However, the quality of the friendship did not determine what the quality of the relationship would be overtime. Sainio, Veenstra, Huitsing, Salmivalli, (2011), state that friendship could protect adolescents from bullying because friendships increase the adolescent s psychosocial adjustment and therefore, decrease their ... Sis Boom Bah! schools where sports are king, and everyone is the epitome of a study hard, well fed Midwesterner, Rock of Gibraltar ethics, corn pone loving, weekend rabble rouser. A Chinese friend of mine claims he went directly from a St. Paul s graduation in New Hampshire to Ann Arbor to acclimate himself in preparation for his greatest year on earth. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although I do not know what the future holds, I am steadfast in planning on it being at UMI. Amongst hundreds of reasons UMI is appealing, its involvement in fostering intellectual and cultural growth in recognition of the importance of globality (not a word, but it should be) makes it my first choice college. As a member of the proud first generation Americans crowd, I know the value of diversity, especially in education. I am constantly envisioning improvements, multiple uses, and/or innovations regardless of the subject at hand; as such I want to have meaningful experiences that will help me identify a productive way for me to spend my life. Targeting classes that develop a depth of finance, business, and social sciences knowledge, I plan to be a ready candidate to join an international team to make a difference in the world. After spending the next four years with a diverse group of global companions, I know we will strengthen our critical thinking and communication skills, broadening our understanding of the mathematics and the humanities in our efforts to recognize opportunities, envision imaginative improvements, multiple uses, and innovations as we strive to economically, environmentally and ... • 5. A Look Into Some Causes, Effects, And Possible Solutions... Ameera Jafrey Professor Syvates ENST 150 September 22, 2014 A Look into Some Causes, Effects, and Possible Solutions of Deforestation in the Global Environment I.Introduction With society s demand and need for the earth s resources, deforestation has long been a prevalent environmental issue at hand and has picked up significant momentum more recently. Deforestation occurs around the world, however, according to GRID Arendal, it is most prevalent in areas with tropical rainforests such as Brazil, Indonesia, Thailand, the Democratic Republic of Congo and other parts of Africa, and parts of Eastern Europe (Szalay 1). For a number of reasons, trees are being cleared at massive levels resulting in poor quality land and have created negative effects and impacts on the global environment. Since deforestation is caused by both human and natural factors such as wildfires and overgrazing, it is difficult to completely pinpoint one cause ( Deforestation 1). However, researching and looking at which causes are most impactful can help deduce possible solutions to help prevent unnecessary and excessive tree clearing. It is important to look into solutions to help prevent deforestation because it is negatively impacting the world s environment and making it difficult for certain animals, such as birds, and even humans to maintain their standard of living and their quality of life. And so, in an attempt to delve a bit deeper with regards to deforestation, this paper will ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Is it the speed, potential crashes or even just the atmosphere? To answer this question many things have to be considered. Back then you had too like what was on offer otherwise you would have nothing! However there was still some resistance to the entertainment on offer to the Romans, Pliny the Younger complains that chariot racing is exactly the same all the time, he then expresses his frustration at the people who do like it because they only like it because of the type of team It wouldn t be so bad if they appreciated the horses speed or drivers skill. • 7. Gender Roles in Television Essay Introduction It is often said that the media and the arts are an accurate reflection of any given community. This is especially true in American pop culture, where television shows depict the various stereotypes attributed to men and women and the roles they play in society. House, a highly popular medical drama that revolves around Dr. Gregory House and his diagnostic team, is a particularly good example as it represents the true state of the traditional gender roles in American culture today by, both, redefining and reinforcing them over the course of the show. In Big Baby, the thirteenth episode of the current season, the show highlights these gender roles by centering on the effects the recent adoption of Rachel has had on Dr. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Gender Role Behaviors and Attitudes, Aaron Devor sheds light on this stereotype: Feminine characteristics are thought to be intrinsic to the female facility for childbirth and breast feeding. Hence, it is popularly believed that the social position of females is biologically mandated to be intertwined with the care of children and a natural dependency on men for the maintenance of mother child units. Dr. Cuddy s confusion and fears over raising her adopted daughter indicates a significant shift from this centuries old stereotype ascribed to women a radical redefinition of traditional gender roles. Mr. Sensitive However, this redefinition is not limited to women alone. Dr. Wilson is perhaps the most diplomatic, sensible, and level headed character in the entire show as he constantly strives to broker a truce between the clashing personalities of Dr. Cuddy and Dr. House. In this episode, he reveals his emotional and sensitive side as he attempts to console a tearful Dr. Cuddy who was struggling with maternity. He returns to her house later on in the episode and attempts to cheer her up by bringing Dr. Cuddy an age enhanced photograph of a teenage Rachel. Many countries are trying to reduce the carbon emission. They tried controlling the smoke of the car. They tried controlling the use of the electric and recycle everything they can use again. However, the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of buildings is more than either the transportation or industrial sectors. According to US Green Building Council s research,In 2004, total emissions from residential and commercial buildings were 2236 million metric tons of CO2, or 39% of total US. Also, buildings consume 70% of the electricity load in the US.(USGBC) A building called Global Ecology Center reduced 72% reduction in carbon emissions and 50% in embodied carbon for building materials. Global Ecology Center is located in Stanford, and it was chosen as an AIA Committee on the Environment Top Ten Green Project for 2007. The capacity is 10,900 ft2. It completed in March 2004. • 9. The Reliability Of Eyewitness Testimony There are many different factors that play a part in the increased chance of a witness correctly identifying a suspect. Such factors should be brought to the attention of the jury and the judge to help in properly assessing whether a witness is correctly identifying a suspect. A study by Magnussen, Melinder, Stridbeck, Raja (2010) found that of the three different types of people: judge , jury, and general public, that for the most part all where fairly ill informed on the reliability of eyewitness testimony with judges having the most. Judges only had about an 8% difference in knowledge when compared to jurors. With this information it is very clear that education on the reliability of eyewitness testimony needs to become more of a general knowledge information for the everyone, especially people who are involved in upholding the law. Another factor to look into when evaluating the accuracy eyewitness testimony is the role that memory plays. Memory is divided into three processes: perceiving, remembering, and recalling information (Simmonsen, 2013). There is plenty of room in all three of those stages to forget or falsely remember something. Some factors that play a part when a person perceives an event is the amount of time they are exposed to the event and the suspect. A study conducted by Horry, Halford, Brewer, Milne, Bull. (2014) found that witnesses were increasingly more likely to correctly identify a suspect if they had been exposed to the suspect for sixty ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Roy Lichtenstein Drowning Girl Essay Critical Analysis Drowning Girl By Roy Lichtenstein (1963) A Critical Art Analysis of Roy Lichtenstein s Drowning Girl (1963) Painting Roy Lichtenstein s Drowning Girl is one of the most renowned pieces of art produced by the American artist. The painting that was created by the artist in the year 1963 on a 67 5/8 x 66 3/4 canvas is contained in the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City, and is one of the most viewed modernistic pieces of art in the museum (MoMA). The Drowning Girl painting depicts a crying lady in an ocean wave, with a thought bubble used by the artist to depict the distress of the girl through the words I don t care! The message of heartbreak in the art is reflected in words contained in the thought bubble and the tears which reveal that the girl in the picture might have been in a romantic relationship with a man named Brad, who broke her heart. Even more clearly, the title Drowning girl, adds to the meaning of the piece of art by suggesting to the viewer that the girl may be drowning in ocean waves. The maneuver of a girl in distress in the painting further points to the deep interest of Roy Lichtenstein in the pain that women go through after heartbreaks. Notably, evidence suggests that as a follower of Picasso, Lichtenstein might have been inspired by the former s frequent use of images of crying women to paint the Drowning Girl (Schneider 142). Overall, the use of ocean waves by the author symbolizes distress, as well the vast amount of tears that the heartbreak might have induced which arouse empathy in the viewer. Although the girl seems to lie in peace with her head on the water like a pillow, the submergence of the rest of her body in water appears to communicate her dire need for assistance. Thus, I would say that the piece of art reminds me of the importance of being considerate of the feelings of fellow humans, especially for people in romantic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. The Research Of Wings Wing Motion 1.1 The Research of Flapping Wing Motion Flapping wing motion is observed from biological flying animals. Most scientist, biologists and naturalists are attracted by this motion and have found over a million different species of insects and 10,000 types of birds and bats fly with flapping wings [1]. In 1490, Leonardo da Vinci made a flapping wings vehicle, also called ornithopter as shown in Figure 1.1, to explain and demonstrate the theory of thrust generated from flapping wings. A huge amount of attempts to develop flying vehicles were made at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th (Lilienthal, 1889; Lippisch, 1960) [2, 3], but most of them failed due to insufficient academic knowledge. The result of one attempt was Knoller [5] and Betz [6] demonstrated the flapping wings generate both thrust and lift of the aerodynamic force, also found motion correlations between wingspan, flapping frequency, weight. According to Prandtl s formulation, Birnbaum [7] developed the first analytical methods for calculating thrust and efficiencies of flat plates in pitching motion in moderate frequencies. After a couple of decades, the research of flapping wing became more detailed and wider, people observed that the operation of flapping wing is limited by objects itself. Some kinds of large birds such as hawks, their wings are fixed while soaring or gliding. But for the smaller birds and insects, they continuously flap in highly frequency in order to lift their whole body. In ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Essay on Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion Ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) utilizes the natural temperature difference in tropical regions to generate electricity. The idea of using the ocean to generate electricity was proposed by a French physicist by the name of Jacques Arsene d Arsonval in 1881. Georges Cluade who was one of d Arsonval students, built the first OTEC power plant in Cuba. Cluade also built a second power plant in 1935 on a 10,000 ton cargo ship which was moored off the coast of Brazil. Although from different backgrounds, the two central characters are both, in their own way, immobile. Driss, played by Omar Sy, suffers social immobility. Living in the banlieues of Paris (an impoverished and often ignored area, the name for which has become pejorative, meaning slums dominated by immigrants ), he has many social barriers which he must transcend. The immobility of the aristocratic, quadriplegic and millionaire Phillipe, who lives in a large expensive house in a wealthy part of Paris, is not social but physical. The lack of one could lead to confusion and hindrance in the implementation of a potentially necessary process. In many organizations, however, there is room for improvement. We pertain to the ideas of acceptance and understanding of individuals that have the intention to become apart of team Australia. But what do we know Australia as? A community of equal citizens Abbott declares (The Conversation, 2014). We can all assume that we as individuals idealise a country of equity and equality in all aspects of life, whether it be race, gender, beliefs or political views. In a world where we want fairness and equality, we coin the concept of social and cultural cohesion, which can be defined as the ties that hold people together (Humanrights.gov.au, 2017). Moreover, social cohesion is regarded as a shared vision, and is a process rather than an outcome (Scanlonfoundation.org.au, 2017). Jenson hypothesised a framework that identifies the importances of social cohesion between individuals. He states that the disruption of social cohesion effects dimensions of belonging, legitimacy, recognition, participation and inclusion (Study.com, 2017). In contrast to this we come across an unwanted prejudice and discrimination towards certain aspects of life. We define this as cultural conflict, the conflict that occurs when different cultural values and beliefs clash with opposing values and beliefs (LeBaron, 2003). • 31. Adverts R Us Analysis I will begin with the commentary Advertisements R Us , by Melissa Rubin. I agree, somewhat, that advertising is a way to hook the consumers. Of course, that is how they expect to sell their product. When a company wants to market their product, they will advertise it to appeal to a variety of consumers. They will try to convince the consumers that they must have the product they are marketing. I do agree with the writer that maybe at some point in time, marketing a product was geared towards specific types of consumers. Perhaps, those consumers may have been the only type of people that could afford to spend the money to purchase the product that was being marketed. Back in those days, having a Coca Cola was a luxury, and most households only had one income. Now a days, it is fair game for everyone because we have a more diverse community. More jobs are available to all races and genders, and two income households are now necessary to make ends meet. According to the writer in the commentary, it sounds like the advertisement was somewhat partial. It does not appear to have people from other ethnic groups. I cannot imagine that Coca Cola would intentionally leave out specific types of people since they were a popular manufacturer in those days, of course, that is just my opinion.... Australians voted for the national constitution in a series of referendums. The Australian Constitution establishes the composition of the Australian Parliament, and describes how Parliament works, what powers it has, how federal and state Parliaments share power, and the roles of the Executive Government and the High Court. The Bradley Fighting Vehicle (BFV) versus the Future Fighting Vehicle (FFV) Programs MSG Torry Rice United States Army Sergeants Major Academy Class 67 Mr. Madera Introduction In the past 15 years, the battlefield has been in the open desert and urban environments. The geographical locations where the United States have fought their wars have had a demand for armored troop vehicles. The Bradley Fighting Vehicle (BFV) has met and exceeded that demand since 1981. With the possible new threat in Eastern Europe, there is a more demand to have a solid armored troop carrier in the Army s arsenal. The Bradley is the right vehicle for the current and possible future threats. The Army wants to erase the M2A3 BFV from its inventory and replace it with a new and improved fighting vehicle. Replacing the Bradley without doing an effective cost analysis would be a huge loss to the Army s budget plan. This would be detrimental especially when the Bradley is not the only vehicle program the Army is trying to replace. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the rationality behind not replacing the BFV at this time. Background Between 1950 and 1960, the Army was developing a plan to transport infantry troops in a specialized armored vehicle. The first transport vehicle was the M113. This vehicle would transform over the years until 1981 when the Bradley Fighting Vehicle was introduced into the Army s arsenal. This armored vehicle got its name from a World War II General ... • 37. Essay On White Fragility Implicit in the act of being honest is to be upfront, even righteous and to be without intent to lie or cheat. Honestly is often followed with some sort of commitment to a stance that correlates with what one is being truthful about. Because this commitment implies action, one might seriously consider whether honestly is a safe position to be taken. We are often hesitant to be truthful about things we have been given yet not earned especially when they have contributed to our successes. Money that was inherited as opposed to earned is one such example. The lifestyle afforded because of inheritance is not because of hard work or intellectual superiority but rather a good fortune. In the United States, the color of our skin is another example of something inherited, not earned, yet affords people certain advantages or disadvantages. What we are handed is even more coveted it when there is a risk of losing it. Although we cannot lose skin color, the inherited gifts which go along with it, protected by white fragility, could be lost. Robin DiAngelo (2011) describes White fragility in her article entitled, White Fragility , as a state in which even a small amount of racial tension is stressful and with the response to this stress being some form of defensiveness. White fragility aims to protect the experience of whiteness, something coveted. The experience of whiteness is discussed thoroughly by Sara Ahmed (2007), in her article entitled, A phenomenology of whiteness . Ahmed considers whether the experience of whiteness should be revealed as an actual thing that takes up space, orientates bodies, functions as a habit and serves as the background to social action (p.149). She references Fine, Weis, Powell and Wong s view of whiteness as an essential something (p.149). If whiteness is real then there may be a risk in being honest about it and the ways we conceal it. The question is whether it is safe, to be honest, and expose white fragility in its most naked form. Acknowledging whiteness and white privilege assumes we (whites) notice inequality. Another way of understanding white fragility is resistance through ignorance about an inequality that is actually meaningful yet necessary to protect if whites ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sharing the same sequence of amino acids, or primary structure, PrPC and PrPSC differ in their secondary, tertiary, and quaternary structures. The normal prion protein has N and C terminals, three alpha helices, and two beta sheets (Soto, 2006, 40). Its function is still not completely understood. However, scientists have found evidence that point to various possibilities. 1) Because most PrPC are located in lipid rafts, membrane structures involved in signaling, it is suggested that PrPC may also be a mediator in neuroprotective signaling pathways. 2) Interaction between PrPC and Bcl 2, a ligand involved in protecting neurons from apoptosis, suggests the possibility that PrPC may be an antiapoptotic protein. 3) PrPC has also been linked to copper metabolism in the brain. In one particular study, PrP knockout mice, or mice that were genetically altered to not express PrP, were found to have lower levels of copper in their brains and higher levels in their serum (Soto, 2006, 42). A Novel Soft Switching of Multi Level DC DC Converter Fed DC Motor Drive Using PV Source M.Eswar Chand Assistant Professor Department of Electrical Electronics Engineering, Sri Sunflower College Of Engineering Technology, Lankapalli. Krishna(Dt); Andhra Pradesh, India. eshwaar.chand@gmail.com P.Hemanth Kumar Assistant Professor Department of Electrical Electronics Engineering, Sri Vasavi Institute Of Engineering Technology, Nandamuru, Krishna(Dt); Andhra Pradesh, India. hemanth659@gmail.com ABSTRACT D.C. motors are seldom used in ordinary applications because all electric supply companies furnish alternating current. However, for special applications such as in steel mills, mines and electric trains, it is advantageous to convert low value of DC into high value of DC in order to use D.C. motors controlled by power electronic apparatus. Here the DC motor is controlled power electronic converters through RES system. Although the design of these converters has been presented at the operational level, some fundamental issues such as topologies, analyses, and control have not been thoroughly studied. In this paper, the basic HB TL topology is first presented. This is followed by the derivation of a systematic method of generating TL converter topologies, leading to the derivation of a family of TL converters with improvement and simplification for better functionality and practicality. This paper discusses wide range soft switching solutions to a pulse width ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 54. Peer Review Strengths And Weaknesses Peer review is more than just reading someone s paper and tell them if it s good or bad. It s about explaining them what their weaknesses and strengths are. It can also help you as a writer by giving you ideas of how to put stuff together in your essay. Personally, I believe that I was really engaged when it came to peer reviewing. I truly appreciated the criticism and honesty of my peers and I hope that they feel the same way about me. I tried to explain to them what was wrong with each page step by step and what are some of their weaknesses and strengths. Reviewing papers can be really hard for multiple reasons. The major one is because I don t like telling others that they re doing something wrong, or because sometimes I just don t agree with their point of view, an example of this is the RPP of my peer Jeffrey. Jeffrey believes that legalizing marijuana would be beneficial to communities and even though I disagree with him I still manage to give him a good review and gave him some sources that may help his claim. Although, I find it hard to review someone s paper sometimes, it is way easier ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This means that they would not be specific enough, they would just write something to get a grade, or they would simply turn their peer review late. There is no much I can do when this happens because I understand that most of us have pretty busy lives so they don t really have time to review other people s paper. So what I do is wait for professor s King review and make corrections based on his opinion, or ask one of my friends who like to read and write to review for me. Something that I would like to say about my experience with peer reviewing in 1302 is that I never felt insulted by no one which was great. I believe that if I were to get insulted in a peer review I would have to take it as a different type of review since everyone has a different way to express ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
