The Five Social Classes In America
The five social or economic classes in America are based on the large disparity of income gaps
in the American class system. The naming of the different class systems may have different
names depending on the author, but the American social class system has a wide income gap
between the richest to the poorest in the nation. According to the article, Who We Are written by
Emily Barone, the income gap is wider than ever before in America. The income gap is wider
than ever. Climbing out of poverty is increasingly difficult. (Barone, 2014, p. 1) The richest are
receiving record high incomes, while the poorest in the nation are finding it ever harder to rise
above the poverty line. The author Ms. Barone divides and names the five social classes... Show

However, not many studies have made it clear as to how wide is the gap between CEO pay here
in America compared to the minimum wage worker and how does this gap compare to other
countries. There is an article called CEOs Get Paid Too Much, According to Pretty Much
Everyone in the World by Ms. Gavett. The article is interesting to point out the differences in
CEO pay gaps according to the minimum wages around the world. The article also gives what
many people perceive as an ideal pay gap between the wealthy and poor around the world. I was
not surprised to see that the America CEO pay gap is the highest in the world and by a large
margin. The ideal pay gap for America according to the study should be around 6.7 to 1 in
America. For example, the largest desired ratio difference Australia at 8.3 to 1 would be
hypothetically making over $500,000 a year. (Gavett, 2014, p. 1) While most Americans feel
that CEO pay gap is larger at around 30 to 1. However, Americans would be stunned to know
America s real wage gap related to CEO to the worker. America s real pay gap is the highest in
the world at 350 to 1. Many of the heated debates about whether CEO pay should be capped or
the minimum wage increased are debates based on an extreme lack of knowledge about the true
state of affairs. (Gavett, 2014, p. 1) Judging by the actual current pay gap figures, I suggest placing

Persuasive Essay On The Gold Standards
The Gold Standard Athletic eligibility requirements are letting students get by without doing
their best. I believe more emphasis needs to be put on academics the reason we come to school.
Right now, the eligibility requirements to play sports are that the student athlete must not have
a grade of one D and one F. Grades are checked on every three weeks. I believe our school can do
better. I think that a grade of two D s, which will be checked on every week, should be this
school s requirement. Let s raise the bar! At the honor roll ceremony, I noticed that almost all of
the students, junior and senior high, were all recognized. In addition, 0% of students, in the junior
high, were ineligible in the past nine weeks. Since our school is already surpassing the
requirements made, why not raise them? It s becoming too easy to be eligible, with the obviously
intelligent students we have here at Little River schools. It will put more emphasis on schoolwork
and students will be able to achieve even more impressive and notable grades. This new
requirement will force students to do the best they can, and make their grades even better. School
comes before athletics. There s a reason the term studentathlete is used.... Show more content on

Did you know? Each course failed in 8th grade increases the odds of non promotion by 16%.
Putting this rule in place adds an extra incentive for students to do well in classes, and that should
lower the amount of failing grades. Raising the level of expectation raises the level of grades;
higher grades equal better chances of doing well in high school classes. This new rule may result in
higher test scores too. Students can be better, if we just push them to do their best. We can make
failing grades almost nonexistent. Let s increase the pride in better grades and strive to do the best
that we

The Secret River
An individual s unique experiences shape their perspective on issues and events, they may share
the same opinion as others while they view the world from a different viewpoint, and this is
particularly relevant in the historical novel, The Secret River by Kate Grenville as the different
contexts employed in the text influence how specific characters are represented. The Secret River
is a text that delves into a dark side of Australian history, through the eyes of an ignorant British
convict; William Thornhill. The novelbegins in 18th century London, where Thornhill, a victim of
the cruel class system in the late British society, is transported to Australiaas a prisoner after being
convicted of stealing. From there on the text explores the moral choices of the colonists including
their ambitions, family and the Aboriginal people who share the land.... Show more content on

Through the use of the depressing setting and third person point of view, in the context of London,
Thornhill is represented as a character that suffers from poverty and therefore values the
necessities in life; food, family, security. However in the context of Sydney, Thornhill is
represented as a working class man whose deprived background leads him to become greedy when
faced with opportunities to become upper class and leads him to express superiority over people, a
result from the influence of the colonial attitude that existed at the time. This transition from poor
to successful businessman is portrayed by Thornhills colonial point of view, the construction of the
setting and the characterisation of the emancipists. On the Hawkesbury river or Thornhills Point
Thornhill is seen as something of a king his transition to the upper class is complete and he is
known as one of the rivers finest gentry, regarding colonial attitudes towards the aboriginal

Consequences Of The Trail Of Tears
The Trail of Tears has been an American predicament as to whether the forceful removal of
Cherokee tribes from their homelands was unconstitutional. The Trail of Tears devastated many
Cherokee people, families, and homes, and is still a debate whether the whole fiasco was
unconstitutional.
Through the years 1816 1840 Native American nations signed more than 40 different treaties that
gave up more and more of the Natives homeland. When President Andrew Jackson came into
power starting in 1829, Jackson made it his policy to remove the Eastern Native American tribes
beyond the white settlements. Then in 1830 U.S. Congress endorsed Jackson s policy and in
return passed the Indian Removal Act, forcing the indians to move west of the Mississippi.
Between the years 1830 and 1850, around 100,000 Native Americans living between the
Mississippi River and the United States were brutally treated and forced to move West. Davy
Crockett who respected and was a scout under Andrew Jackson during the Creek War, was a
congressman from Tennessee during Jackson s term and called the Indian Removal Act unjust.
Jackson s Indian Removal policy would set the stage for Trail of Tears and the forceful removal of
the Cherokee Nation.
The Trail of Tears stemmed from Andrew Jackson s Indian Removal Act, the Cherokees were
forced to move West of the Mississippi into now a day Oklahoma. The Trail of Tears was the
name given by the Cherokee people of the cross country journey they made, because of the

Hiroshima John Hersey Summary
Hiroshima, a monograph written by John Hersey, narrates the lives of the six survivors of the
atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima on August 6 of 1945. The book covers these six survivors
experience from the moment prior to the bomb being dropped until many months later. Forty
years since the bomb, the fifth chapter of the monograph was added, in which the author
reexamined the six survivors lives and what they had gone through during almost four decades
after 1945. The six individuals introduced by John Hersey in this book included: Miss Toshinki
Sasaki, a clerk in the personnel department of the East Asia Tin Works; Dr. Masakazu Fujii, a
physician; Mrs. Hatsuyo Nakamura, a tailor s widow; Father Wilhelm Kleinsorge, a German priest;
Dr. Terufumi... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I found the information Hersey gathered from the interviews with the six survivors, which is a
primary source, fairly adequate since the author actually spent three weeks in Japan to conduct
these interviews. Having the victims words allowed Hersey to illustrate the historical event of the
atomic bomb being dropped in the most vivid way as possible and narrating it from multiple
perspectives because these words came from someone who actually witnessed and participated in
the event. One of the six survivors that the author interviewed, the Reverend Mr. Kiyoshi Tanimoto,
spent the rest of his life after the Second World War to fight against the usage of nuclear weapons.
He went on extensive speaking tours in the United States to raise funds for his project of a
Hiroshima peace center and for the Hiroshima Maidens, who were severely burned by the fires
after the bomb and in need of plastic surgery. In 1955, the Reverend Mr. Kiyoshi Tanimoto
appeared for an interview about the fateful event on a television program named This is Your
Life, where he met Captain Robert Lewis, co pilot of the Enola Gay on the Hiroshima mission.
The annual award Kiyoshi Tanimoto Peace Prize, a prize awarded to individuals and groups that
are trying to promote a peaceful world, is named after him. However, since this information came
from the victims, its adequacy can also be questioned since the six survivors may have distorted
their reports to enhance their own image or importance. In addition, it is also worth to mention the
compelling statistics Hersey presented in the monograph that cited the number of doctors and
nurses, who were either killed or injured by the bomb in Hiroshima.

Pursuing Orthodontic Career Essay
My initial step toward pursuing Orthodontics as a career started in Sweden when I began working
as a Dental Assistant in a private practice in Sweden that was shared by a general dentist as well as
an orthodontist. My duties included assisting the doctor, laboratory work and an orthodontic
auxiliary. This is when my fascination and wonder began while witnessing first hand, what
orthodontic transformation can do for an individual. I consider this experience as the first step of a
thousand mile journey toward pursuing Orthodonticsas a career. My interest in Orthodontic was

Population Growth In American Cities In The Late 19th Century
In the late 19th century, American cities exploded in population. This explosion was fueled by
population growth, technology in transportation, and industrialization. In 1870, there were only
two American cities with a population of more than 500,000, but by 1900, there were six. Three
of these New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia had over one million residents. Roughly 40 percent
of Americans lived in cities, and the number was increasing (Urbanization, 2015). The various
needs of the populated cities forced social and physical to the make up of the American city.

native born Americans migrating to the bigger cities. Mass immigration continued ... Show more

This gave jobs to shippers, merchants, and banks. The rise in factory labor workers in the towns
called for a rise in service professions such as bankers and merchants. With the rise of factory
workers and the rise of service professions, the population in these towns quickly increased. This
growth in the industry led to a rise in the economy within the cities and amongst the people. Just
as industrialization was transforming the cities, new technology was reshaping it. Taller
buildings became imaginable with the invention of elevators and construction using cast iron
supports and steel girders. In 1885, the first steel frame skyscraper, ten stories high, arose in
Chicago. New York s Woolworth Building soared to a height of 60 stories, in 1913. Taller
buildings were the cause of an increase in land values. In commerce, large department stores
developed in the 1860s and 1870s (Industrialization, n.d.). Department stores such as Sears and
Montgomery Ward replaced the mom and pop general stores. The modern stores, which stocked a
wide variety of competitively priced items, were cleverly located in shopping areas near trolley
stops for fast and convenient access. The growth in the industry led to the growth in the economy

The Contribution of the Supernatural to Richard III Essay
The Contribution of the Supernatural to Richard III
During the Renaissance period people were very superstitious and England on a whole was an
extremely religious country; people believed in both God and the Devil and Heaven and Hell.
They also believed in prophecies, supernatural and curses. A modern audience would have reacted
very differently to the play than a Shakespearean audience. The events contained within Richard III
must have seemed very real to a Shakespearean audience as it depicts the historical events of the
rise and fall of Richard III. For a Shakespearean audience these events happened only a century
earlier. To a modern audience it is viewed as what it is, a dramatisation of a... Show more content

Richard III is a play based upon the dramatisation of history.
The supernatural is an event that depends upon the superseding of the laws of nature, an event
which cannot occur naturally in our world under any circumstances with or without the assistance
of any natural being. Only God, or the Devil, has the power to cause supernatural events to occur.
Richard III deals with supernatural elements such as curses, devils, dreams and witchcraft. I
believe supernatural elements were included in Richard III to add a sense of dread that matches
the malice of Richard, to show that divine nemesis exists. Shakespeare created Richard as a
machiavellian who takes delight in governing through fear and force. He is a character of sheer
evil; however Shakespeare provides a contrast to Richard s villainy via the voices of the female
characters. Margaret and Anne contribute by predicting the dire consequences of Richard s acts;
they also express their intense hatred through curses.
The most common use of supernatural by Shakespeare within Richard III is curses. Curses are
magic spells placed upon people with the intention of harm. The desired affect of curses can range
from illness to death. Curses are commonly associated

Milgram Experiment Unethical
The (Unethical?) Milgram Experiment The Milgram experiment was an experiment that took place
in 1961 at Yale University, created by Stanley Milgram. The experiment was conducted to test the
public s obedience to authority, especially in circumstances in which they are told to participate in
activities that are clearly wrong. In this experiment, subjects were told that they were to be
administering shocks to another subject. This subject happened to be not a subject at all, but an
actor. As the experiment went on, the subjects were told to administer more and more painful
shocks, and the actor expressed how they were in severe physical pain, not to mention at a possible
risk to their health, although not actually being shocked. Those who... Show more content on

had it not been for the deception involved in it. Subjects were told they would be participating in a
different experiment in all aspects; the experiment would be one in which they were teachers, trying
to reinforce concepts through punishment (shocks) on a learner . The deception involved in this
and similar experiments during this time was enough to spark a serious conversation about research
ethics during the time, and how the guidelines surrounding them needed to be drastically improved

No Bruce Springsteen Or Billy Joel Concert
The moment I stepped foot into the doorway, I knew that the night would not turn out the way I
had expected. I was stunned in fear by the way people looked: tattoos, piercings, and hoodies was
clearly the norm at the scene. The room was dark, and I felt the stuffy air choke me up. First
impressions are everything, and this one was unlike any other; I was somewhat scared and uneasy.
This is how I felt the night my friends introduced a new idea to go to a metal concertfor the first
time. This was no Bruce Springsteen or Billy Joel concert; it was a new entity that was explicitly
more fierce and threatening that I have ever imagined. Metal concerts are dangerous and
unappealing places where people fight, get hurt, and are reckless with their behavior; attending
these concerts have demonstrated how revoking the people and venue can be, and have changed
my views on them and musicforever.
I heard a tap on the microphone, a loud squeal, and there I realized that this music was not meant
for me. I am used to a nice soothing type of music: a good rhythm, with calming lyrics. This was
the complete opposite. The lead singer was screaming these inaudible words into the microphone
as he banged his head in a way that almost looked painful. The instruments were played recklessly
with a force that was incredible: the drummer slammed the bass, guitarists shredded the chords, and
everyone else yelled the lyrics. For a moment I was just still, confused, and stunned by what I was

The Effects of Advancements in Lighting on The Theatre...
Without light, the theatre cannot exist, that much is certain. As actors, as audience members, as
technical visionaries, we are only as powerful as the light we are given. The extent to which we
depend upon light in performance has changed dramatically throughout history, however, as light
technology developed and expanded. In the history of performance, the artistic community is
constantly victim to the limits of lightingtechnology, and exponentially altered by breakthroughs.
From the utilization of candles and natural lightto isolated light and electricity, the histories of
illumination and theatreare virtually inseparable, and continue to push the boundaries of live
performance. Like any journey, it is necessary to begin with a... Show more content on

Having only heightened text and elaborate spectacles to guide them, much of the subtlety,
specificity, and emotion must have been lost in translation.Additionally, indoor performances,
primarily requested by courts and nobility, specifically used candles and torches as sources of
illumination. Candles were placed at the front of the stage, between the wings leading to the stage,
and above both the stage in order to frame the players. Chandeliers were also hung above those in
attendance, to create a sense of audience. This marks both the first appearances of footlights in the
theatre and, though basic, the beginning of a formulaic structure for lighting a performance space.
Issues prevailed, however there were still no successful methods for specific lighting, unless an
actor held the light themselves to illuminate their face, nor were colored lights or gobo devices
available. Though lighting was making its way into the theatrical world, it was purely technical, not
called upon to be inventive, create illusions or accomplish tasks at this point in time. Limited design
innovations were mostly rooted in the scarce advancements made with regard to lighting
technology. Where this began to change and evolve was in the early 1800s, when the gaslight was
introduced into the performing arts sphere. The new technology was brought into the theatre
industry by William Murdoch and later F.A. Winsor, who used the lights to replace candles in
framing the stage

Analysis Of John Milton s Paradise Lost Essay
Eve s story arc in Paradise Lost, by John Milton, is a bildungsroman, the German word for a
novel of education. Eve develops through the five stages of a typical bildungsroman character, as
demonstrated by several different works from the genre. It will be useful to discuss several
different bildungsromans from different eras and regions to fully determine the necessary
characteristics of a bildungsroman, like The Odyssey, To Kill a Mockingbird, David Copperfield,
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and The Catcher in the Rye. One of the most well known
bildungsromans and one of the most applicable to Eve s development is To Kill a Mockingbird.
Scout Finch goes through a process comparable to Eve s, and will be especially useful in assessing
Eve s maturation since they are both heroines. It is worth noting that although Eve is not
necessarily the protagonist and certainly not the sole focus of Paradise Lost, the work may still be a
bildungsroman in the same way that The Odyssey is Telemachus bildungsroman despite the work
not being centered around him.
A bildungsroman is very similar to the classic coming of age story, but the former tends to
investigate the moral growth of the protagonist more than the latter. According to the Encyclopedia
Brittanica, a bildungsroman deals with the maturation process, with how and why the protagonist
develops as he does, both morally and psychologically. The critical aspects of a bildungsroman are,
as evidenced by examples of the genre:

Essay on Internal Control Risks
Internal Control Risks Identified in Apollo Shoes
Assessing control risk is the process of evaluating the design and operating effectiveness of a
company s internal controls as to how it prevents or detects material misstatements in the financial
statement assertions of management (Hayes, Dassen, Schilder, amp; Wallage, 2005). The
conclusion reached as a result of assessing control risk is referred to as the assessed level of
control risk. When assessing controls the auditor looks for weaknesses in a company s internal
controls for two reasons: to determine the nature and extent of the substantive tests the auditor will
perform and to formulate constructive suggestions for improvements (Hayes, Dassen, Schilder,
amp; Wallage, 2005).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pre numbering is meant to prevent both the failure to bill or record sales and the occurrence of
duplicate billings and recordings. However, it does not do much good to have pre numbered
documents unless they are properly accounted for. To use this control effectively, a billing clerk
should file a copy of all shipping documents in sequential order after each shipment is billed, while
another employee should periodically account for all numbers and investigate the reason for any
missing documents (Arens, Elder, amp; Beasley, 2012).
The sales order forms were kept in the sales clerk s working area where many people passed
through during the day. Estimated dollar amounts were prepared by sales clerks and written on the
order forms. The sales orders are then hand carried to the credit manager, who is in the treasurer s
department. Typically, the computer automatically prepares the sales invoiceafter the customer
number; quantity, destination of goods shipped, and sales terms are entered (Arens, Elder, amp;

How Social Forces Allowed The Spread Of Flash Mob
Memes have taken over our society. They have invaded everything that we know from food,
music, movies, and TV shows. A meme is recognized as an idea, behavior, and a style that
spread through individuals within a culture. Memes come in a variety of forms such as TV and
movie references that are expressed in an image, jokes, minor everyday consequences or piece of
text. The word meme was coined by Richard Dawkins in his book The Selfish Gene in 1976. Now
with the internet memesspreads quickly throughout society. Bill Wasika senior editor at wired

Wasik writes, the vast majority of events are summarily ignored, while a small subset of events
attracts enormous audiences and, soon media attention (477). In this line, Wasik is talking about
how protests, plays, concerts, and other events don t receive that much attention as a flash mob.
During the presidential elections, political memes were all over social media. The most common
political memes that drowned social media were with Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. One
meme consisted of a little boy sticking a knife into a socket, then the text reads: Trump or
Hillary? Top socket or bottom socket? This meme spread instantly after the debate. There were
some individuals who haven t watch the debate, and attention was drawn to the meme and people
realize whoever wins, either way, they are screwed. Throughout this election, attention was drawn
more to the memes than the actual election. Because people didn t pay attention to politics
directly, memes were used to inform and shape the opinion of the general public about politics.
Memes do more that bring laughter to a group of people that can relate to it, they shape the minds
of individuals on social issues. Social issues are an undesirable condition that individuals believe
should be corrected. Social issues influence many individuals within a society. Every meme has

The And Estuaries During The Gulf Coast Essay
The marshlands and estuaries located throughout the Gulf Coast provide important breeding
grounds and nurseries for the fishing and shrimping industries. In 2008, according to the
National Marine Fisheries Service, the commercial fish and shellfish harvest from the five U.S.
Gulf states was estimated to be 1.3 billion pounds valued at $661 million. Oil spills are
extremely harmful to marine life when they occur and often for years or even decades later, said
Jacqueline Savitz, a marine scientist and climate campaign director at Oceana, an environmental
group. She said spills could coat sea birds and limit their flying ability and damage fisheriesby
injuring marine organism s systems related to respiration, vision and reproduction. Savitz said that
the Gulf of Mexicois host to four species of endangered sea turtles and bluefin tuna, snapper and
grouper. Each of these can be affected, she said. Turtles have to come to the surface to breathe
and can be coated with oil or may swallow it. And, she added, the Gulf is one of only two
nurseries for bluefin tuna, more than 90 percent of which return to their place of birth to spawn.
BP being the responsible party had the liability to bear all the costs and organizational duties

Ocean Iron Fertilization By Oceanographer John Martin
In recent years, ocean iron fertilization has become a topic of widespread debate in the scientific,
political and legal communities. First conceptualized by oceanographer John Martin in the 1980s,
ocean iron fertilization is a geoengineering technology that involves the intentional introduction of
ironto the surface waters of high nutrient, low chlorophyll (HNLC) areas of the oceans in order to
stimulate the growth of phytoplanktonblooms. Phytoplankton blooms mature over a period of
thirty to sixty days and like terrestrial plants, they too absorb carbon dioxidefor photosynthesis.
When the phytoplankton die, organic carbon material sinks to the ocean floor and atmospheric
carbon dioxide is sequestered in the deep ocean for relatively long spans of time. By perpetuating
the growth of carbon capturing phytoplankton blooms, ocean iron fertilization reduces atmospheric
carbon dioxide, thereby mitigating the profound consequences of climate change.
With the world s carbon dioxide levels on the rise and the effects of global warming becoming
increasingly devastating, it is imperative now more than ever that every mitigation strategy be
thoroughly explored. Although ocean iron fertilization may seem like a fairly simple method of
sequestering carbon dioxide, there is in fact a plethora of issues linked to this mitigation strategy.
The aim of this literature review is to examine and analyze some of the aspects that make ocean
iron fertilization such a controversial method of

Hazing as we know it today is most commonly to initiate members into a fraternity, sorority, or club
of some sort. Hazing s roots go into Ancient Greece when Plato first observed the occurrence and
wrote about it in one of his works. The first sign of the term hazing appeared in the 16th century,
when veteran soldiers would harass new sailors whenever the weather would create a haze. The
integration of hazing in American society occurred in the 19th century after the Civil War. Before
the war, university fraternities were a place to exchange ideas which most students did not find too
engaging. After the war, the meaning of university fraternities had evolved to strengthen bonds with
one another. The war put not optimal events and situations, which made soldiers strengthen bonds
between one another. Fraternities would often replicate the traumatic events that occurred during
the war to strengthen bonds between the recruits and the organization. The fraternities would base
hazing rituals on stories their fathers or grandfathers who had participated in the war. Three hazing

Good People By David Foster Wallace
David Foster Wallace s short story Good People uses the themes of division, isolation, and
loneliness to suggest how communication can overcomes these psychological problems. These
themes, prominent in the story of a young couple struggling with how to react to an unwanted
pregnancy, are present in many of Wallace s stories, and come from his own struggles and literary
influences. The nature of divisionversus unity in the story is manifested in many basic as well as
complex ways. The central tension of the story comes from the position of the unborn child that
Sheri Fisher is carrying. The tension comes from the fact that Lane Dean and Fisher must decide
whether Fisher and the child should remain physically united or be permanently divided; to have
the child would represent a permanent unity of family at least between Fisher and the child, while
an abortion would be a permanent division.
The two main characters are also deeply divided based on their perspective. Lane Dean, the male
character, was trying to say things that would get her to open up and say enough back that he
could see her and read her heart and know what to say to get her to go through with it (Wallace).
Dean is at once divided from Fisher, his girlfriend, because his perspective is apparently different
from hers. He is sure that he wants her to get the abortion, while she appears unsure. They are
further divided because to Dean, his girlfriend is blank and hidden (Wallace), meaning that Dean

The Problem With Subprime Mortgages And Minorities
The problem with Subprime Mortgages and Minorities
When it comes to buying a home there are a few things you need first. Of course you need
money , but what if you don t have the money but you want to get a home? Well you would apply
for a loan, but there are two loans you could qualify for and those two are known as prime loans
and subprime loans. There are far too many cases where there are well qualified people with the
credentials to get a prime loan but were denied, forcing them to settle for worse forms of credit
such as subprime loan. The problem is that it is unethical to even offer these subprime loans
because of the debt that it puts subprime borrowers in. Through my research I have gathered I have
determined that well qualifying minorities, in particular blacks and Hispanics, have been denied
prime mortgages based on race and prejudices, making them easier prey for less convenient loans
such as subprime mortgages, which results in higher default and foreclosure rates amongst minority
residences.
Subprime loans A subprime loan is a loan given to people who generally have bad to below
average credit and are charged with higher interest rates because of past credit history. Subprime
mortgages was designed to help those Americans who want to achieve the goal of homeownership
for low income minorities (Gorton 12). The unethical dilemma is that the lender has the choice to

The Philosophy Of Social Science Summary
The philosophy of social science is the branch of philosophy that involves examining concepts, the
methods, and the logic of the social sciences (Fay, 2016, P.1). Gordon (1991, P.2), defined social
science as using the scientific method to study human social behaviour. Therefore, this branch
analyses the cooperation of human beings with the aim of achieving objectives collectively rather
than individually. Furthermore, the philosophers of social scienceare concerned with the
investigation of the social science practices and the nature of human beings.
The purpose of this paper is to critically review Martin Hollis s, The Philosophy of Social
Science. The paper will analyse the author s objective regarding the book, the approach taken by
the author, the strength, and weaknesses of the book as well as what the readers might find useful
from the book.
The author sets out to define and examine the explanation and understanding of the major theme in
the social world. The concept of understanding centers on a proposition that the social world
preferably ought to be understood from within rather than being explained from outside (Hollis,
2011, p.16).
The concept of holism and individualism is also addressed as a minor theme. Holism implies that
human beings are morally responsible for what they do and the most valued forms of political
organisation are determined socially and thus rest on illusion (Hollis, 2011, p.107). The concept of
individualism is defined from social

Budgeting Is The Cornerstone Of The Management Control...
The traditional budget is a rigid tool and therefore be discarded in practice . Should the traditional
budgetary model be abandoned as suggested above?
Introduction
Budgeting is the cornerstone of the management control process in nearly all organizations (Hansen
et al, 2003). The purpose of budgeting is to give targets and plans financial value, making the
progress easily measurable and to transform the strategic ideas into understandable operative action.
(Hanninen, 2013). Yet sometimes budgeting is not as ideal as it is thought. Specifically, traditional
budgeting method for the past couple of years arose a lot of discussions about its aptness today.
Traditional budgeting has been one of the first budgeting methods and is said to be a method of
managing cost and cash flows. Traditional budgeting ideally should set strategic goals and create
forecasts for costs, cash flows, incomes and other key financial factors. Normally, there are three
steps that are involved in this type of budgeting:
Prioritizing objectives that would be set out in the corporate financial planning process
Assessing and quantifying total available resources (both financial and non financial)
Identifying and quantifying the inputs and processes necessary to implement the goals and related
financial resource
Calculating the percentage of the total funds required for the acquisition/management of inputs and
realization of set goals

Foxtrot Dance History
The Fox Trot Approaching the 20th century it was hard to pick just one topic to write on. Since I

most famous dances at this particular time. The Fox Trot is defined as a ballroom dance that has
alternating two quick steps and two slow steps. The long walking movements involve a subtle
rise fall action. Turning movements are similar to Waltz, but with a more moderate rise and fall,
and more length wise action ( Foxtrot Dance Steps in Ballroom Dance. ). When researching I
found that the Fox Trot was associated with the Vaudeville era and was named after the Vaudeville
actor, Harry fox. Although, that was not his real name, he was born with the name Arthur

The Great 1906 San Francisco Earthquake
At 5:12 a.m. on April 18, 1906, the people of San Francisco were abruptly awaken to one of the
world s most expensive and impacting earthquakes of the 20th century. The magnitude of the
earthquake is debatable, ranging from 7.7 to as high as 8.2. However, the most accepted Richter
measurement is 7.9. This is debated because Charles Richtor developed his scale in 1935, after
the killer quake. The main shock epicenter occurred offshore 3.2 km from the city, near Mussel
Rock. It ruptured along the San Andreas Fault northward and southward for 476 km (296 miles).
The quake was felt from Oregon to Los Angeles, inland as far as Nevada. Though the earthquake
was impacting in itself, it lasted less than a minute and the most damage was done by the resulting
fire that lasted 4 days. The earthquake bears inexhaustible remembrance as one of the worst natural
disasters in the history of the United States and has had lasting social, fiscal, and political impact.
The death toll is uncertain, but modern calculations approximate about 3,000 deaths at a
minimum. The death toll alone is a very debated topic, and has had a large impact by itself.
Initially it was said that only 478 people had died. It is speculated that the official tally of 478 was
employed by the city coroner, who added 100 to the 378 bodies that showed up at the morgue.
Some uncertainty in the toll exists because government officials felt

Greek and Roman Concepts of Citizenship and Government The definition of citizenship in Greek

a citizen evolved dramatically throughout the Roman Republic. All males over 15 that were true

to be sure that all team members of the business are aware of what it is and how to create one.
Secure Transactions will help to ensure that we as a business will be able to recover our interest if
any client defaults on a credit obligation to the business. While the Secured Transactions help both
parties, we should be very cautious in entering any agreements that are not secured or have not been
fully perfected and understand the risk associated. There are 6 key terms that the business should be
familiar with when entering into secured agreements with consumers (business and personal
consumers). They are Secured Transactions, Debtor,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To create the Security Transaction, the creditor will need to 1) create a written authenticated
security agreement that clearly describes the collateral subject to the security interest 2) The secured
party must give the debtor something of value and 3) The debtor must have rights in the collateral.
These three things should be clearly defined in the Security Agreement so that both parties
understand the condition of the transaction. If more than one creditor has a security interest in the
same collateral, both companies may not recover the debt from the debtors in cases of bankruptcy
where a third party may have their debts satisfied from the same collateral. One way to avoid this
is to perfect the agreement which is the legal process that secured parties protect themselves against
third party claims to have their debts satisfied from the same collateral. One of the most common
ways to perfect a secured transaction is perfection by filling. This is when a debtor files a financing
statement with the appropriate government office. By filing with the government office, this will
be satisfactory in notifying the public of the Security Interest in the collateral. Another form of
perfection is perfection by possession where a debtor transfers the collateral to the creditors
possession. When the debt is paid off, the collateral is then returned to the debtor. Another common
perfection method is by

Market Revolution And The Industrial Revolution
The industrial revolution during the 19th Century led to the rapid expanse of cotton production in
America. Several new inventions began to be used which could more efficiently use cotton and
other similar materials to aid in the production of textiles. During that time, the textile industry was
big and the demand for cottoncontinued to grow however the price of cotton never increased to
match the demand. Slaves were taken advantage of and because their labor was so cheap it was
beneficial to slave owners to collect cotton using slave labor and trade the cotton for a profit.
Great Britain was the worlds most powerful country and a large part of that countries industrial
life was cotton textiles. America became Britain s biggest trade partner for cotton and the increase
in trade allowed America to build on its own and gain a bigger variety of goods through trade. The
cotton industry was one of the biggest influences of America s growth in the 19th Century and slave
labor was used to ensure its expansion could continue throughout the years.
Mass production was a major technological achievement all over the world especially in newly
developing areas. Factory jobs were becoming wildly available and the demand for the materials
used in these factories increased exponentially. The southern states were more focused on gaining
profit through agriculture, however the tobacco economy in these states was beginning to fail. With
the rise of the textile industry, these same states

Thinking Outside The Idiot Box Analysis
Contemporary t.v. in today s society has taken up a vast amount of time in people s life. People
can spend hours in a day just watching t.v. mindlessly, however, is this time spent watching t.v.
making a person smarter? The television shows that people watch today are a primary form of
entertainment for a majority of America, along with conveying information to viewers. For years
now people have wanted dumb, simple tv, but as the culture began to develop more cognitively
people want complex and intelligent television. Contemporary t.v. is an important aspect for people
to gainknowledge and information about the world, it doesn t matter whether information comes
from a t.v. series, a comedy news show or from a hard hitting formal... Show more content on

Similar to what Dana Stevens is taking about in finding credibility in a television like 24, Jason
Zinser looks at this question in his article, The Good, the Bad, and The Daily Show. . Zinser
addresses both the benefits and downfalls of television, but ultimately ends up taking a stand
somewhere in the middle of how t.v. is both good and bad for people. Zinser s believes that The
Daily Show can be used as a starting point from which people can gain an understanding of
current events but it s not the most useful way. He claims that this type of information people
gain from watching a comedy news show can be both useful but damaging. The question that
needs to be addressed though, is why does it matter where people are gaining their knowledge
about the world and critical events as long as they are gaining some knowledge from what they re
watching. As Zinser states, An informed public is the grease that keeps democracy running
properly. Although foreign and domestic issues aren t settled by popular vote, an informed public
wields great democratic power . It doesn t matter whether information comes from a comedy news
show or from a hard hitting formal newscast, any information that a person gains from television is
far better than receiving no information at all, because if the public is informed about the news in
the world they have an understanding of it and could possibly make decision about things

Sacrifice In Great Expectations Analysis
Great Expectations: A Journey of Self Discovery through Sacrifice
Sarah Dessen once said It was amazing how you could get so far from where you d planned, and
yet find it was exactly where you needed to be. This idea of self discovery through sacrifice is
echoed by Charles Dickens in his novel Great Expectations. The central character Pirrup, otherwise
known as Pip, receives great expectations early on in the novel that seem to promise a perfect life.
However as Pip matures throughout the novel and many aspects of his relationships are revealed, it
becomes evident that his expectations are everything but great. In his novel Great Expectations,
Charles Dickens emphasizes the desire to change due to societal expectations. Dickens uses Pip,
who fails to live up to his expectations, to reveal that the sacrifices made in order to change, are
often detrimental to happiness.
In Dicken s novel Great Expectations, which is set in the Victorian era, Dickens uses the social
classes to reveal that change is often driven by societal expectations and can often cause
sacrifices to be made which often lead to an unhappy life. In this era status was important. Those
who were in lower classes strived to move up, and those in higher classes lived lavish lives of
elegance. Dickens reveals these ideas though the actions of other characters as Pip receives his
expectations. Uncle Pumblechook, who wanted nothing to do with Pip before he had received his
expectations, says, To think, that I

Hard To Love By One Ok Rock
All throughout my life I have been inspired by my mom. The poem Hard to Love by One Ok
Rock really puts all my inspiration to her in words. Throughout my life my mom has really
influenced me with all her love. Even with the downs and ups of life she was always there to help
me through just like the protagonist in One Ok Rock s song.
The first two lines of One Ok Rock s poem says when I was just a kid I couldn t wait till I grew up
. When I was a little kid around the age of 6 I started to want to be older. I had felt that if I was older
I would be able to do things what my mom could do like driving a car or being at home and caring
for kids like she cared for us. Soon after the age of 6 bad times had befallen my family, my dad

Scissor Sharpener Research Paper
The Scissor Sharpener There were times when this Scissor Sharpener who was a small dwarfed
like man with a hunchback strangely was on one side of his back, he drove what looked like to
me was a very tiny gray van, thinking this was made for small people, he would shout out if you
needed anything sharpened? The vision I have has never left me, I will always remember this
from his tiny little van, he would open the back doors to reveal a grinding wheel; he would bend
over and peer to look at you with creepy expression, I think he did this to scare us, thinking
because he was different from other people. We would stare at him, cruel as it may seem, but kids
do the unkind things only until he turned around, truly it did the trick and we ran away,

  • 2. The Five Social Classes In America The five social or economic classes in America are based on the large disparity of income gaps in the American class system. The naming of the different class systems may have different names depending on the author, but the American social class system has a wide income gap between the richest to the poorest in the nation. According to the article, Who We Are written by Emily Barone, the income gap is wider than ever before in America. The income gap is wider than ever. Climbing out of poverty is increasingly difficult. (Barone, 2014, p. 1) The richest are receiving record high incomes, while the poorest in the nation are finding it ever harder to rise above the poverty line. However, not many studies have made it clear as to how wide is the gap between CEO pay here in America compared to the minimum wage worker and how does this gap compare to other countries. There is an article called CEOs Get Paid Too Much, According to Pretty Much Everyone in the World by Ms. Gavett. The article is interesting to point out the differences in CEO pay gaps according to the minimum wages around the world. The article also gives what many people perceive as an ideal pay gap between the wealthy and poor around the world. I was not surprised to see that the America CEO pay gap is the highest in the world and by a large margin. The ideal pay gap for America according to the study should be around 6.7 to 1 in America. For example, the largest desired ratio difference Australia at 8.3 to 1 would be hypothetically making over $500,000 a year. (Gavett, 2014, p. 1) While most Americans feel that CEO pay gap is larger at around 30 to 1. However, Americans would be stunned to know America s real wage gap related to CEO to the worker. America s real pay gap is the highest in the world at 350 to 1. Many of the heated debates about whether CEO pay should be capped or the minimum wage increased are debates based on an extreme lack of knowledge about the true state of affairs. • 3. Persuasive Essay On The Gold Standards The Gold Standard Athletic eligibility requirements are letting students get by without doing their best. I believe more emphasis needs to be put on academics the reason we come to school. Right now, the eligibility requirements to play sports are that the student athlete must not have a grade of one D and one F. Grades are checked on every three weeks. I believe our school can do better. I think that a grade of two D s, which will be checked on every week, should be this school s requirement. Let s raise the bar! At the honor roll ceremony, I noticed that almost all of the students, junior and senior high, were all recognized. In addition, 0% of students, in the junior high, were ineligible in the past nine weeks. Since our school is already surpassing the requirements made, why not raise them? It s becoming too easy to be eligible, with the obviously intelligent students we have here at Little River schools. It will put more emphasis on schoolwork and students will be able to achieve even more impressive and notable grades. This new requirement will force students to do the best they can, and make their grades even better. School comes before athletics. There s a reason the term studentathlete is used.... Putting this rule in place adds an extra incentive for students to do well in classes, and that should lower the amount of failing grades. Raising the level of expectation raises the level of grades; higher grades equal better chances of doing well in high school classes. This new rule may result in higher test scores too. Students can be better, if we just push them to do their best. We can make failing grades almost nonexistent. Let s increase the pride in better grades and strive to do the best that we ... • 4. The Secret River An individual s unique experiences shape their perspective on issues and events, they may share the same opinion as others while they view the world from a different viewpoint, and this is particularly relevant in the historical novel, The Secret River by Kate Grenville as the different contexts employed in the text influence how specific characters are represented. The Secret River is a text that delves into a dark side of Australian history, through the eyes of an ignorant British convict; William Thornhill. The novelbegins in 18th century London, where Thornhill, a victim of the cruel class system in the late British society, is transported to Australiaas a prisoner after being convicted of stealing. From there on the text explores the moral choices of the colonists including their ambitions, family and the Aboriginal people who share the land.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This transition from poor to successful businessman is portrayed by Thornhills colonial point of view, the construction of the setting and the characterisation of the emancipists. • 5. Consequences Of The Trail Of Tears The Trail of Tears has been an American predicament as to whether the forceful removal of Cherokee tribes from their homelands was unconstitutional. The Trail of Tears devastated many Cherokee people, families, and homes, and is still a debate whether the whole fiasco was unconstitutional. Through the years 1816 1840 Native American nations signed more than 40 different treaties that gave up more and more of the Natives homeland. When President Andrew Jackson came into power starting in 1829, Jackson made it his policy to remove the Eastern Native American tribes beyond the white settlements. Then in 1830 U.S. Congress endorsed Jackson s policy and in return passed the Indian Removal Act, forcing the indians to move west of the Mississippi. Between the years 1830 and 1850, around 100,000 Native Americans living between the Mississippi River and the United States were brutally treated and forced to move West. Davy Crockett who respected and was a scout under Andrew Jackson during the Creek War, was a congressman from Tennessee during Jackson s term and called the Indian Removal Act unjust. Jackson s Indian Removal policy would set the stage for Trail of Tears and the forceful removal of the Cherokee Nation. The Trail of Tears stemmed from Andrew Jackson s Indian Removal Act, the Cherokees were forced to move West of the Mississippi into now a day Oklahoma. • 6. Hiroshima John Hersey Summary Hiroshima, a monograph written by John Hersey, narrates the lives of the six survivors of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima on August 6 of 1945. The book covers these six survivors experience from the moment prior to the bomb being dropped until many months later. Forty years since the bomb, the fifth chapter of the monograph was added, in which the author reexamined the six survivors lives and what they had gone through during almost four decades after 1945. The six individuals introduced by John Hersey in this book included: Miss Toshinki Sasaki, a clerk in the personnel department of the East Asia Tin Works; Dr. Masakazu Fujii, a physician; Mrs. Hatsuyo Nakamura, a tailor s widow; Father Wilhelm Kleinsorge, a German priest; Dr. Terufumi... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I found the information Hersey gathered from the interviews with the six survivors, which is a primary source, fairly adequate since the author actually spent three weeks in Japan to conduct these interviews. Having the victims words allowed Hersey to illustrate the historical event of the atomic bomb being dropped in the most vivid way as possible and narrating it from multiple perspectives because these words came from someone who actually witnessed and participated in the event. One of the six survivors that the author interviewed, the Reverend Mr. Kiyoshi Tanimoto, spent the rest of his life after the Second World War to fight against the usage of nuclear weapons. He went on extensive speaking tours in the United States to raise funds for his project of a Hiroshima peace center and for the Hiroshima Maidens, who were severely burned by the fires after the bomb and in need of plastic surgery. In 1955, the Reverend Mr. Kiyoshi Tanimoto appeared for an interview about the fateful event on a television program named This is Your Life, where he met Captain Robert Lewis, co pilot of the Enola Gay on the Hiroshima mission. The annual award Kiyoshi Tanimoto Peace Prize, a prize awarded to individuals and groups that are trying to promote a peaceful world, is named after him. However, since this information came from the victims, its adequacy can also be questioned since the six survivors may have distorted their reports to enhance their own image or importance. In addition, it is also worth to mention the compelling statistics Hersey presented in the monograph that cited the number of doctors and nurses, who were either killed or injured by the bomb in Hiroshima. ... This explosion was fueled by population growth, technology in transportation, and industrialization. In 1870, there were only two American cities with a population of more than 500,000, but by 1900, there were six. Three of these New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia had over one million residents. Roughly 40 percent of Americans lived in cities, and the number was increasing (Urbanization, 2015). The Contribution of the Supernatural to Richard III Essay The Contribution of the Supernatural to Richard III During the Renaissance period people were very superstitious and England on a whole was an extremely religious country; people believed in both God and the Devil and Heaven and Hell. They also believed in prophecies, supernatural and curses. A modern audience would have reacted very differently to the play than a Shakespearean audience. The events contained within Richard III must have seemed very real to a Shakespearean audience as it depicts the historical events of the rise and fall of Richard III. Richard III is a play based upon the dramatisation of history. The supernatural is an event that depends upon the superseding of the laws of nature, an event which cannot occur naturally in our world under any circumstances with or without the assistance of any natural being. Only God, or the Devil, has the power to cause supernatural events to occur. Richard III deals with supernatural elements such as curses, devils, dreams and witchcraft. I believe supernatural elements were included in Richard III to add a sense of dread that matches the malice of Richard, to show that divine nemesis exists. Shakespeare created Richard as a machiavellian who takes delight in governing through fear and force. He is a character of sheer evil; however Shakespeare provides a contrast to Richard s villainy via the voices of the female characters. Margaret and Anne contribute by predicting the dire consequences of Richard s acts; they also express their intense hatred through curses. The most common use of supernatural by Shakespeare within Richard III is curses. Curses are magic spells placed upon people with the intention of harm. The desired affect of curses can range from illness to death. Curses are commonly associated ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This was no Bruce Springsteen or Billy Joel concert; it was a new entity that was explicitly more fierce and threatening that I have ever imagined. Metal concerts are dangerous and unappealing places where people fight, get hurt, and are reckless with their behavior; attending these concerts have demonstrated how revoking the people and venue can be, and have changed my views on them and musicforever. This was the complete opposite. The lead singer was screaming these inaudible words into the microphone as he banged his head in a way that almost looked painful. As actors, as audience members, as technical visionaries, we are only as powerful as the light we are given. The extent to which we depend upon light in performance has changed dramatically throughout history, however, as light technology developed and expanded. In the history of performance, the artistic community is constantly victim to the limits of lightingtechnology, and exponentially altered by breakthroughs. Chandeliers were also hung above those in attendance, to create a sense of audience. This marks both the first appearances of footlights in the theatre and, though basic, the beginning of a formulaic structure for lighting a performance space. Limited design innovations were mostly rooted in the scarce advancements made with regard to lighting technology. Where this began to change and evolve was in the early 1800s, when the gaslight was introduced into the performing arts sphere. • 18. Analysis Of John Milton s Paradise Lost Essay Eve s story arc in Paradise Lost, by John Milton, is a bildungsroman, the German word for a novel of education. Eve develops through the five stages of a typical bildungsroman character, as demonstrated by several different works from the genre. It will be useful to discuss several different bildungsromans from different eras and regions to fully determine the necessary characteristics of a bildungsroman, like The Odyssey, To Kill a Mockingbird, David Copperfield, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and The Catcher in the Rye. One of the most well known bildungsromans and one of the most applicable to Eve s development is To Kill a Mockingbird. Scout Finch goes through a process comparable to Eve s, and will be especially useful in assessing Eve s maturation since they are both heroines. It is worth noting that although Eve is not necessarily the protagonist and certainly not the sole focus of Paradise Lost, the work may still be a bildungsroman in the same way that The Odyssey is Telemachus bildungsroman despite the work not being centered around him. A bildungsroman is very similar to the classic coming of age story, but the former tends to investigate the moral growth of the protagonist more than the latter. According to the Encyclopedia Brittanica, a bildungsroman deals with the maturation process, with how and why the protagonist develops as he does, both morally and psychologically. The conclusion reached as a result of assessing control risk is referred to as the assessed level of control risk. During the presidential elections, political memes were all over social media. The most common political memes that drowned social media were with Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. One meme consisted of a little boy sticking a knife into a socket, then the text reads: Trump or Hillary? Top socket or bottom socket? This meme spread instantly after the debate. There were some individuals who haven t watch the debate, and attention was drawn to the meme and people realize whoever wins, either way, they are screwed. • 21. The And Estuaries During The Gulf Coast Essay The marshlands and estuaries located throughout the Gulf Coast provide important breeding grounds and nurseries for the fishing and shrimping industries. In 2008, according to the National Marine Fisheries Service, the commercial fish and shellfish harvest from the five U.S. Gulf states was estimated to be 1.3 billion pounds valued at $661 million. Oil spills are extremely harmful to marine life when they occur and often for years or even decades later, said Jacqueline Savitz, a marine scientist and climate campaign director at Oceana, an environmental group. She said spills could coat sea birds and limit their flying ability and damage fisheriesby injuring marine organism s systems related to respiration, vision and reproduction. Savitz said that the Gulf of Mexicois host to four species of endangered sea turtles and bluefin tuna, snapper and grouper. Each of these can be affected, she said. Turtles have to come to the surface to breathe and can be coated with oil or may swallow it. And, she added, the Gulf is one of only two nurseries for bluefin tuna, more than 90 percent of which return to their place of birth to spawn. BP being the responsible party had the liability to bear all the costs and organizational duties associated with the cleanup effort while the Coast guard monitored and approved the things. • 22. Ocean Iron Fertilization By Oceanographer John Martin In recent years, ocean iron fertilization has become a topic of widespread debate in the scientific, political and legal communities. First conceptualized by oceanographer John Martin in the 1980s, ocean iron fertilization is a geoengineering technology that involves the intentional introduction of ironto the surface waters of high nutrient, low chlorophyll (HNLC) areas of the oceans in order to stimulate the growth of phytoplanktonblooms. Phytoplankton blooms mature over a period of thirty to sixty days and like terrestrial plants, they too absorb carbon dioxidefor photosynthesis. When the phytoplankton die, organic carbon material sinks to the ocean floor and atmospheric carbon dioxide is sequestered in the deep ocean for relatively long spans of time. By perpetuating the growth of carbon capturing phytoplankton blooms, ocean iron fertilization reduces atmospheric carbon dioxide, thereby mitigating the profound consequences of climate change. With the world s carbon dioxide levels on the rise and the effects of global warming becoming increasingly devastating, it is imperative now more than ever that every mitigation strategy be thoroughly explored. Although ocean iron fertilization may seem like a fairly simple method of sequestering carbon dioxide, there is in fact a plethora of issues linked to this mitigation strategy. The aim of this literature review is to examine and analyze some of the aspects that make ocean iron fertilization such a controversial method of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 24. Good People By David Foster Wallace David Foster Wallace s short story Good People uses the themes of division, isolation, and loneliness to suggest how communication can overcomes these psychological problems. These themes, prominent in the story of a young couple struggling with how to react to an unwanted pregnancy, are present in many of Wallace s stories, and come from his own struggles and literary influences. The nature of divisionversus unity in the story is manifested in many basic as well as complex ways. The central tension of the story comes from the position of the unborn child that Sheri Fisher is carrying. The tension comes from the fact that Lane Dean and Fisher must decide whether Fisher and the child should remain physically united or be permanently divided; to have the child would represent a permanent unity of family at least between Fisher and the child, while an abortion would be a permanent division. The two main characters are also deeply divided based on their perspective. Lane Dean, the male character, was trying to say things that would get her to open up and say enough back that he could see her and read her heart and know what to say to get her to go through with it (Wallace). Dean is at once divided from Fisher, his girlfriend, because his perspective is apparently different from hers. He is sure that he wants her to get the abortion, while she appears unsure. Of course you need money , but what if you don t have the money but you want to get a home? Well you would apply for a loan, but there are two loans you could qualify for and those two are known as prime loans and subprime loans. There are far too many cases where there are well qualified people with the credentials to get a prime loan but were denied, forcing them to settle for worse forms of credit such as subprime loan. The problem is that it is unethical to even offer these subprime loans because of the debt that it puts subprime borrowers in. Through my research I have gathered I have determined that well qualifying minorities, in particular blacks and Hispanics, have been denied prime mortgages based on race and prejudices, making them easier prey for less convenient loans such as subprime mortgages, which results in higher default and foreclosure rates amongst minority residences. Subprime loans A subprime loan is a loan given to people who generally have bad to below average credit and are charged with higher interest rates because of past credit history. • 28. The Philosophy Of Social Science Summary The philosophy of social science is the branch of philosophy that involves examining concepts, the methods, and the logic of the social sciences (Fay, 2016, P.1). Gordon (1991, P.2), defined social science as using the scientific method to study human social behaviour. Therefore, this branch analyses the cooperation of human beings with the aim of achieving objectives collectively rather than individually. Furthermore, the philosophers of social scienceare concerned with the investigation of the social science practices and the nature of human beings. The purpose of this paper is to critically review Martin Hollis s, The Philosophy of Social Science. The paper will analyse the author s objective regarding the book, the approach taken by the author, the strength, and weaknesses of the book as well as what the readers might find useful from the book. The author sets out to define and examine the explanation and understanding of the major theme in the social world. The concept of understanding centers on a proposition that the social world preferably ought to be understood from within rather than being explained from outside (Hollis, 2011, p.16). The concept of holism and individualism is also addressed as a minor theme. Holism implies that human beings are morally responsible for what they do and the most valued forms of political organisation are determined socially and thus rest on illusion (Hollis, 2011, p.107). During that time, the textile industry was big and the demand for cottoncontinued to grow however the price of cotton never increased to match the demand. Slaves were taken advantage of and because their labor was so cheap it was beneficial to slave owners to collect cotton using slave labor and trade the cotton for a profit. Great Britain was the worlds most powerful country and a large part of that countries industrial life was cotton textiles. America became Britain s biggest trade partner for cotton and the increase in trade allowed America to build on its own and gain a bigger variety of goods through trade. The cotton industry was one of the biggest influences of America s growth in the 19th Century and slave labor was used to ensure its expansion could continue throughout the years. • 43. Thinking Outside The Idiot Box Analysis Contemporary t.v. in today s society has taken up a vast amount of time in people s life. People can spend hours in a day just watching t.v. mindlessly, however, is this time spent watching t.v. making a person smarter? The television shows that people watch today are a primary form of entertainment for a majority of America, along with conveying information to viewers. For years now people have wanted dumb, simple tv, but as the culture began to develop more cognitively people want complex and intelligent television. Contemporary t.v. is an important aspect for people to gainknowledge and information about the world, it doesn t matter whether information comes from a t.v. series, a comedy news show or from a hard hitting formal... Similar to what Dana Stevens is taking about in finding credibility in a television like 24, Jason Zinser looks at this question in his article, The Good, the Bad, and The Daily Show. . Zinser addresses both the benefits and downfalls of television, but ultimately ends up taking a stand somewhere in the middle of how t.v. is both good and bad for people. Zinser s believes that The Daily Show can be used as a starting point from which people can gain an understanding of current events but it s not the most useful way. He claims that this type of information people gain from watching a comedy news show can be both useful but damaging. The question that needs to be addressed though, is why does it matter where people are gaining their knowledge about the world and critical events as long as they are gaining some knowledge from what they re watching. As Zinser states, An informed public is the grease that keeps democracy running properly. Although foreign and domestic issues aren t settled by popular vote, an informed public wields great democratic power . It doesn t matter whether information comes from a comedy news show or from a hard hitting formal newscast, any information that a person gains from television is far better than receiving no information at all, because if the public is informed about the news in the world they have an understanding of it and could possibly make decision about things ... • 44. Sacrifice In Great Expectations Analysis Great Expectations: A Journey of Self Discovery through Sacrifice Sarah Dessen once said It was amazing how you could get so far from where you d planned, and yet find it was exactly where you needed to be. This idea of self discovery through sacrifice is echoed by Charles Dickens in his novel Great Expectations. The central character Pirrup, otherwise known as Pip, receives great expectations early on in the novel that seem to promise a perfect life. However as Pip matures throughout the novel and many aspects of his relationships are revealed, it becomes evident that his expectations are everything but great. In his novel Great Expectations, Charles Dickens emphasizes the desire to change due to societal expectations. Dickens uses Pip, who fails to live up to his expectations, to reveal that the sacrifices made in order to change, are often detrimental to happiness. In Dicken s novel Great Expectations, which is set in the Victorian era, Dickens uses the social classes to reveal that change is often driven by societal expectations and can often cause sacrifices to be made which often lead to an unhappy life. In this era status was important. Those who were in lower classes strived to move up, and those in higher classes lived lavish lives of elegance. • 46. Scissor Sharpener Research Paper The Scissor Sharpener There were times when this Scissor Sharpener who was a small dwarfed like man with a hunchback strangely was on one side of his back, he drove what looked like to me was a very tiny gray van, thinking this was made for small people, he would shout out if you needed anything sharpened? The vision I have has never left me, I will always remember this from his tiny little van, he would open the back doors to reveal a grinding wheel; he would bend over and peer to look at you with creepy expression, I think he did this to scare us, thinking because he was different from other people. We would stare at him, cruel as it may seem, but kids do the unkind things only until he turned around, truly it did the trick and we ran away, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
