As a consequence of slavery and segregation, Angela Y. Davis contends in Blues
Legacies and Black Feminism, her study of the recordings of Billie Holiday and the blues
vaudevillians Gertrude (Ma) Rainey and Bessie Smith, black social consciousness has been
overdetermined by race, with too little attention paid to sex and virtually none to class. Davis, a
professor of something called the history of consciousness at the University of California,
Santa Cruz, would have a hard time selling such a notion to this country s black poor, who are
understandably inclined to blame the legacy of white racism for their poverty. But she s right in
step with the more radical of her academic colleagues, even if her ingrained cultural nationalism
prevents her from joining them in dismissing race as an arbitrary social construct with no basis in

discussion away from the more crucial issue of class.

The Santa Ana Winds The Santa Ana by Joan Didion and Brush Fire by Linda Thomas offer
complete separate views to a similar topic, the winds of Southern California. In a first person
narration the authors write of the wind from her own experience of living in California and from
her own perspective, shedding light on two very different aspects of the Santa Ana winds.

Didion personifies the wind as almost an unknown epidemic. Similar to when an unknown
disease goes viral, all walks of life are affected. Didion clearly states how teachers, students,
doctors, to physicists, to generally everyone becomes unhappy and uncomfortable during the
winds. She does not write of how the wind caused fire to ravage the shrublands, but she writes of
the symptoms it inflicts on the people. Didion mentions all the after effects of the wind and the
harm it can do like inflict paranoia. She mentions how the fear stricken victims of southern
California are paranoid like her neighbor that refuses to leave the house and her husband who
roams with a machete. Didion s personification of the wind focuses on a fearful and distant light. In
contrast, Thomas approaches the Santa Ana winds as a routinely destructive awe. Though Thomas
focuses more on the fire caused by the wind, then the wind itself, Thomas casts a soft light on the
winds. She believes that the winds are not destructive, but that humans are and the winds only do
what they must. She and her neighbors gather around and watch the brushfire destroy a hill in the

the table. In contrast, prisoners in the Holocaust had to worry about even getting food or even
having shelter, like the Holocaust texts Night by Elie Wiesel and Maus by Art Spiegelman show
vivid examples of how advice from others helped them survive. In life and death situations, others
compassion will increase one s chances of survival.
In the novel Night, compassion from the Kapo and the French Woman gives Elie a greater chance
of survival. In the beginning of the novel, people gave compassion to others even while they
were in life and death situations, and this continued throughout the novel. When the French
Woman is gives advice to Elie, the woman says, Bite your lips, little brother . . . Don t cry. Keep
your anger, your hate, for another day, for later. The day will come but not now . . . Wait.
