Book and Film Comparison
The Bourne Identity
Robert Ludlum
Richard Marek Publishers; First Edition edition (1980)
Setting
The setting of the novel takes place largely in Europe. The story opens in the Mediterranean Sea
off the coast of France. The story moves throughout France largely in Paris. Zurich, Switzerland is
also a major setting. New York City and Washington, D.C. also play lesser but important roles.
The story ends in the upper west side of Manhattan in New York City. Other parts of the world are
alluded to as well, especially Southeast Asia.

With Marie s reluctant help, Bourne edges closer to the truth, something CIA officials want
concealed at all costs. The Bourne Identity co stars Chris Cooper, Clive Owen, Brian Cox, and Julia
Stiles. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi
III. Effectiveness/ Success of the Adaptation: It would be futile to compare this movie with the
book, as the movie ignores most of the plot in the book, only keeping the element of an amnesiac
agent. Although they share a name, The Bourne Identity by Robert Ludlum and its movie
adaptation have very little to nothing in common. (see Fig 1.0) Compared side by side, the
movie will hardly cover the first 3 chapters of the book. The book describes a man who is found
shot in the ocean without his memory. He is saved by a couple of men and taken to a doctor on
land who helps him regain his strength and begin to remember his past. The man travels to Zurich
because of a negative found implanted in his body that leads to a bank. There, he is ambushed by
enemies he knows not, and with the help of an unwilling woman named Marie St. Jacques he
escapes. The man, whose name is discovered to be Jason Bourne, and Marie fall in love and end up
in Paris.

Leo Tolstoy s The Death Of Ivan Ilych
How should life be lived? This is a question that people repeatedly ask themselves during their life.
Outside influences, such as the media, celebrities, and peer pressure force people to search for the
answer to this question. As a result, many books have been written about how life should be lived,
one of these being The Deathof Ivan Ilych. In this novella, Leo Tolstoy tells the reader how to live
a good life by describing the life and death of someone who lived the simplest, the most ordinary,
and the most awful kind of life (95). Tolstoy achieves his purpose by using different figures of
speech; specifically, he uses irony to demonstrate how Ivan, the main character, lived a bad life,
personification to show why he lived a bad life, and rhetorical questions to explain how life should
be lived.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As described in Chapters 2 and 3, Ivan had slowly lost his moral compass between the ages of 18
and 45. At first, he felt guilty for doing horrid things at school, but when he later on realized that
people of high status also did those horrid things, he lost this sense of guilt. This loss caused him
to do many other horrid actions, such as having an affair, drinking profusely, possibly meeting
with a prostitute, and badly manipulating others. Due to his new focus on work, though, he had
begun to earn more money, which caused him to view his life as very nice (110). This is an
example of irony to show how disconnected Ivan had become with the state of his inner self. Later
on in the novella when Ivan was near death, he realizes this irony, saying, I had been going steadily
downhill, imagining that I was going uphill

Jane Eyre Struggles
Jane Eyre endures the toughest conflict because horrible things keep coming her way like, when
the teachers mistreated her, her horrible school, and her struggle to get to the top of the class. She
endures the most conflict because she the most and worst things happen to her for instance being
shunned by everybody, and getting her hair cut off. Jane triumphs the most from her conflict
because she knows that she will get through and tries to do better like when she struggled to get to
the top of her class. First, when Jane broke her chalkboard, the author said You must be on your
guard against her; you must shun her example if necessary, avoid her company, exclude her from
sports, and shut her out from your converse (BrontГ« 60). The shows

Essay about Equal Opportunity, written by Walter Mosely
In this short story, Equal Opportunity, written by Walter Mosely, Socrates Furtlow, an ex
convict, faces the dilemma of getting a job. Socrates served 27 years in prison after killing two
of his friends while drunken. Furtlow was now living life as a bumb who went around selling old
bottles and cans to make a living. This story tells his struggle to find honorable work as a black
man in society because of his background. He ended up lying on his application because he was
afraid of what people might think. Although there was discriminationand disrespect not being
completely honest with people may come back to haunt you later.

Everyone should have an equal opportunity in getting a job and at least a fair chance with an
application. After Socrates and Anton discussed their rights and the law the assistant manager
went to the main office to fetch and application. The elevated office looked over all the checkout
counters and where Socrates stood waiting. Socrates was then center of attention to all the bag
boys and checkers as they all knew their boss, Anton was unhappy. Anton and an older white
woman exchanged a few words then she handed him the application and he stormed back down
to Socrates. Rudely handing him the app Anton was about to go on with his day but Socrates
wanted a pencil to fill it out and give it back. He had come a long way to turn in an application
not just receive a sheet of paper and wasn t leaving until he did so. Thirty minutes later Socrates
stood at the foot of the stairs leading up to the main office with his almost completed application in
hand. Nearly forty minutes passed and he knew they could see him and he could see them but he
waited patiently, on the outside, though inside he was thinking of throwing a brick through the
window. He had a few questions for the manager, Ms. Halley Grimes, when she finally came down

Nuclear Power Plants and Nuclear Waste
The purpose of a nuclear power plant is to produce electricity for supporting increases in
consumption. Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) defines nuclear energy as the energy
released by a nuclear reaction, especially by fission or fusion. In general terms, nuclear energy
uses fuel made from mined and processed uranium to make steam and generate electricity (ENEC
2011). Nuclear powerplant currently producing electricity in the U.S include the Pressurized Water
Reactor and the Boiling Water Reactor. To illustrate the importance of nuclear energy to the United
States, 20% of our nation s electricity production comes from the 104 commercially operating
reactors (Funk and Socacool 2012). However, security issues surrounding nuclear power lead to the
U.S nuclear regulatory agencies imposing strict regulations on the production of nuclear energy.
As a result, development and construction time of a nuclear power plant is a complex process.
Before an applicant can start building a nuclear power plant, it must receive approval from the U.S
Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Previous regulations required that a nuclear power plant was
licensed under a two step licensing process (NRC 2004). This former process required both a
construction permit and an operating license (NRC 2004). In 1989, the NRC established an
alternative licensing process which formed a joint license between the construction permit and an
operating license (NRC 2004). Following approval from the U.S NRC

Abe Lincoln and Slavery Essay
Abraham was born a poor farmhand boy in Kentucky, but he moved from small cabins in
Kentucky, Indiana, and finally settled in Illinois. He was a farmhand for his father in these states
and didn t have much exposure to slavery, although, these states did have black/slave laws.
Lincoln got his first dose of slavery at the age of eighteen when he was hired to take a flatboat
down to New Orleans. I quote from Lincoln: A Photobiography Lincoln would never forget the site
of black men, women, and children being driven along in chains and being auctioned off like cattle.
This still didn t change his opinion on slavery (he didn t have one).

When the Kansas Nebraska Act repealed the Missouri Compromise by allowing slavery in the
Louisiana territory forbidden by the Compromise Lincoln was rocketed into an abolitionist
standpoint. He spoke against Stephen Douglas act and campaigned for anti slavery Whigs.
Lincoln spoke harshly against slavery, even going so far as to call it a cancer . In 1856 Lincoln
switched to the Republican Party solely because the Whigs couldn t be absolutely against
slavery as a party, while the Republicans strongly disfavored slavery. In 1858 Lincoln fought
against Stephen Douglas in a battle for the senate. They held three debates, Lincoln strongly
favoring abolition while Douglas stayed at a position in which he believed in white supremacy
saying, I am not in favor of Negro equality . At this point in his life Lincoln was a leading
abolitionist and fully fledged against slavery. Lincoln lost the election by a slim margin but didn t
even stop fighting; in fact the fight had just begun. Lincoln was elected to run for the Republican
president in 1860. Lincoln new that since he strongly despised slavery that he wasn t going to win
any slave states; so he strongly campaigned in the north. For this action he became the president
elect. Because of his election, South Carolina seceded from the union. Lincoln wanted to preserve
the union without bloodshed, but that didn t happen. At the beginning of the Civil War Lincoln

Analysis Of Porosity And Temperature By Qinwu Xu
Porosity and Temperature By Qinwu Xu, October 17, 2016 Introduction Metal primarily exhibits
plastic and ductile behaviors in the cutting process in which its behavior is often assumed to be
isotropic and homogeneous [1]. The large deformation and unconstrained plastic flow nature of
machining metals can be modeled with an unstructured tetrahedral mesh, allowing for the adaptive
local refinement and coarsening to alleviate mesh distortions, maintain simulation accuracy and
reasonable computational performance. However, modeling of ceramic matrix composites could be
much more complex due to the unique feature of this type of material: 1) the fracture and brittle
behavior of materials; and b) the nonuniform distribution of porosity in the ceramic matrix. CMCs
are comprised of individual layers with unique material properties dependent on fiber orientation
within the polymer matrix which is typically in a woven pattern. Therefore, CMCs often exhibit
anisotropic or orthotropic properties, and have lower strains and higher degrees of fragmentations
than metallic materials during machining. The unique features of CMCs make simulations more
challenging due to the complex nature of the problem considering material nonlinear fracture,
anisotropic or orthotropic property and multi phase interaction apart from dynamic loading and
plastic deformation in machining of metals. Different modeling approaches have been studied for
modeling the machining of composites and CMCs, including

Trying To Overcome Violence Sociology
Throughout the course of time, violence has been used as a tactic when trying to achieve
something that one does not have already. Some may say that it is a useful tactic, while others
strongly disagree. Although there are scenarios when one has to take risks. For example, if a
business manager needs to keep his company up and running and needs to take risk for the better
of his life and the ones around him, I wouldn t be totally disgusted with him/her. Personally, in the
terms of economics and trying to overcome a conflict, I am on the fence and agree with both sides
of the argument. Honestly, it could go both ways, it s just scaled on how far he/she takes the
violenceand how it s affecting the community around.
If one were to support the side of violence, and agree that it is a solid and profound way ... Show

Violence is not something we as human beings are supposed to be doing. Like I said before,
Mac and his plan to sabotage that innocent man did result in a positive strike for what the people
believed in. Yet, he also did break that man s leg. There are many examples in life that make it
easier to overcome if you incorporate violence. It might just not be the moral thing to do as a
human being. In addition, in the novel we just read, violence only happened because it was
needed to prove a point to the Grower s Organization and the highest class. Same thing is needed
in any other strikes happening around the world today. In our life today, everything human beings
say or do atomatically involves and disappoints somebody else. People then form an alliance to
try to fight against this other party of sort to stand up for what they believe in. Totally relating

to inexpensively and easily connect local area network segments (Microsoft, 2010). The reason

The Black Hole, An Area Of Spacetime
The black hole, an area of spacetime thats gravity is so strong that it can prevent anything from
escaping, even light. Contrary to popular belief, black holes are not empty holes in space, but
rather a massive amount of matter packed into a small area. The graphic to the right shows the
simulated view of a black holein front of a Large Magellanic Cloud. The theory of these black
holes was conceived in Einstein s theory of general relativity. It predicts that a plentiful compact
mass will contort spacetime and create a black hole. The black hole acts like a perfect black
body, in the sense that it reflects no light. The area where the nothing can escape is the event
horizon. This event horizon has no features that can be detected from close up, and has huge
effects on what will happen to the object that crosses it. Also, according to the to quantum field
theory in curved spacetime, an event horizon will emit a black body radiation, also known as
Hawking radiation. The graphic to the right shows where the event horizon, and the black hole
itself, are located. It also shows the accretion disk, which is formed when matter falls into a
black hole and is heated by friction. It is believed that black holes of extreme mass form when
giant stars collapse. After this event, its continues to grow by absorbing the mass from its
surroundings. The way scientists can tell the age of a black hole is by using the orbits of stars
around it. It is believed that supermassive black holes

The Free Application For Federal Student Aid
Introduction During week two, we were tasked to conduct a financial analysis of the Johnson
family and assess their ability to independently fund the college educations of their three children.
That analysis determined the two hundred dollars currently contributed monthly to each child s
college fund since each child was born will not fully fund their educations, given their ages, current
balances in each college fund and the annual inflation of college costs. Assuming their available
cash flow will only support the current monthly college fund contributions, alternative methods and

However, it is equally important for other potential forms of financial aid as many states and
colleges use your FAFSA data to determine your eligibility for state and school aid, and some
private financial aid providers may use your FAFSA information to determine whether you
qualify for their aid (Federal Student Aid, 2017, p.1). Federal Student Aid is a very large
program providing more than $150 billion in federal grants, loans, and work study funds each
year to more than 13 million students paying for college or career school (Federal Student Aid,
2017, p.1). Therefore, the student who is seeking financial aid to cover a portion of college costs
needs to first and foremost complete a FAFSA application as it is the basis for Federal Student Aid
but is also the data source for other forms of student financial aid. FAFSA applications consider the
assets of the parents and the student in determining the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) and
will normally expect a higher percentage of contribution from student assets vice a lower
percentage from the parents (Mannaioni Greer 2016). For determining family or student assets to
be assessed against potential financial aid, FAFSA places emphasis on family or student adjusted
gross income as other assets such as retirement accounts, cash value life insurance, home equity and
small business assets are excluded when calculating the EFC. Institutional Methodology, on the

Analysis Of There Is A Monster By Mary Shelley
Feral children or wild children (What happens to those who grow up in complete isolation?) The

Cross Border valuation of projects. This kind of analysis is common for companies that are

These amounts of tax savings should be added to the incremental cost savings for each year to
come up with the total cash inflows. The present value of all these cash inflows and outflows
can be calculated by discounting them at 12.19%. This rate is calculated by assuming that the
purchasing power parity holds in this scenario. The company can do the feasibility analysis by
looking at both from the subsidiary s and parent s perspective by assuming that the purchasing
power parity holds. Hence, this rate can be regarded as opportunity cost of investment because it
is the second best alternative for the company for investment purposes. So, the NPV can be
calculated by taking the sum of present values of all the cash flows. This NPV comes out to be
3,703,176 Pesos. This NPV value can be converted into Euros by dividing the NPV value by the
spot exchange rate. The spot exchange rate is 15.99 MXN/EURO. Hence, by dividing
3,703,176 by 15.99, NPV value in terms of Euro comes out to be 231,593 Euros. Compute the
NPV in €s by translating future peso cash flows into €s at expected future spot rates. Note
Ariel s € hurdle rate for this asset class was 8%. Annual inflation rates are expected to be 7% in
Mexico and 3% in France. NPV calculated for this scenario comes out to be 231,507 Euros. The
first thing required for calculating NPV in Euro is the forward premium. It is calculated by adding
1 to the inflation rates of France and Mexico

Stressed out, dependent, self conscious; these are common emotions among women. According to

self conscious and like they are not good enough. Recently, due to increasing demands, the makeup

informative as possible, it still does persuade young women by appealing to their desires to be

Malik s Memoir
Ever since I was born, I have been Malik s little sister. This has always been my identity. My
brother, Malik, was born with a multitude of disabilities. At only two days old, the doctors told my
family he was blind in one eye. By the time he was six weeks old, he had undergone three major
surgeries: One for the heart, then on the esophagus and finally, the placement of a stomach tube. At
age one, my familydiscovered he was 100% deaf. When he was three, he was diagnosed with
CHARGE Syndrome, an incredibly rare and complex congenital disorder. Approximately 1 in
every 10,000 children are born with it. Each letter in CHARGE stands for the disabilities used to

Malik is completely non verbal. He communicates through only American Sign Language and/ or

you know he loves you? I did not have to think for very long to come up with an answer. I can
tell he loves me when he gets upset and comes to me for a hug. I can tell he loves me when I put
him to bed and he wants me to sit with him until he falls asleep. I can tell he loves me with every
tiny gesture of affection or appreciation. Noticing these things without a doubt made me the
person I am today. His loving personality has made me want to be a more caring person for as
long as I can remember. Seeing the joy he is able to evoke in others gives me the motivation to
provide people that same happiness. My brother, Malik, is the most influential person in my life.
He constantly makes me want to be a better person, not only for him, but also for everyone else.

Thin Democracy
Thin democracy can be considered as the overview of how democracies elect their leaders. Joseph
Schumpeter describes thin democracy to have free, fair, and regular elections. On the other hand,
there are ten thick dimensions to what is considered a liberal democracy. Thick democracyhas
characteristics such as a large amount of individual freedoms in terms of speech, belief, and
opinion, pluralism in regards to media and information outlets, and equality of all citizens under
the law. The distinction between the two are important because they both present two different
results when being established. Thin democracy is malleable and can multiply at a good rate.
However, this only gives an opportunity for good values to be established and does not ensure the
same perks as thick democracy. Thick democracy is slowly forged with liberal... Show more content

The relationship between liberalism and democracy is that both should attempt to be intertwined.
Liberalism is like the roof and walls which protect the citizens from government and democracy is
the structure and foundations which keeps order. It is completely possible to have one without
the other, but the results are not always good. As stated in the second reading, the separation of
the two would result in forms of illiberal democracy or liberal autocracy. Illiberal democracy
would have the electoral process of a thin democracy, but will likely overlook protecting the
citizens rights and focus on accumulating power. A liberal autocracy may not allow much say
into who or what is spearheading the nation, but will allow many qualities seen in a thick
democracy. Illiberal democracies may also eventually spiral into disarray along with horizontal
and vertical usurpation. Liberal autocracies would have freedom of speech, a fair judicial system,
and even individual freedoms for beliefs, culture, and religion. Of course, there may be more or
less freedoms with both liberal autocracies and illiberal

multiple feelings/themes are presented. A couple of these have stuck out in comparison to the

B) The brand personality of a company can be described as the set of human characteristics that
attributed to the brand of a company. It is something by which the consumer can relate to the
brand which can effectively increase the value of the brand by effectively communicating a sense
of similarity to their customers. There are five main types of brand personalities, but the one that
matches Nestle the best is, excitement. Nestle gives of vibes of a carefree attitude and connects
best with consumers that are youthful and spirited. Because of the nature of the products Nestle
offers, the idea of Point of Purchase (POP) becomes very important. Many of the Nestle
consumers purchase their products at the payment isle of grocery stores, so POP sales become
very important. This also allows packaging to play an extremely important role during the POP
purchase. Because there are many other similar products in the check out isle, it is important for
Nestle to make their products stand out. According to a brand manager from Nestle, For Nestle,
packaging has a key role to play in brand recognition . Environmental issues, mainly the use of
biodegradable and sustainable materials, have a growing impact on package design and materials
sourcing. This is something Nestle keeps in mind when communicating with their consumers and
also when maintaining brand identity and packaging characteristics. Nestle also recently announced

How Is Sisyphus Similar
1). Phil s scenario is similar to Sisyphus because they are both stuck in a situation where they
have to repeat doing the same thing over and over. For example, Phil keeps reliving Groundhog
Day while Sisyphus has to roll a rock up a hill for eternity. Another example of how Phil s and
Sisyphus scenarios are similar is how they got themselves into repeating the same day over. Phil
was rude to people and did not enjoy the little aspects of life during his stay and news casting in
Punxsutawney for Groundhog Day. Unlike Phil, Sisyphus created many crimes that the gods did
not appreciate. Phil s scenario is different from Sisyphus because Phil got to change the way he
wanted to act and the things he wanted to do. For example, after he realized that he was going to
keep reliving Groundhog s Day, he decided to take advantage of the situation. On one of the days
Phil decided to drive foolishly around town with two drunks that he met at a bar and ends up in
jail. Since he is reliving the same day many times, he decides to steal money from the money truck.

Throughout the movie Phil takes advantage of reliving the same day but then realizes there is

instead of thinking of himself all the time he starts to do service for others in the community. We
can see that he struggles with the consequence he is faced with but in the end we see that Phil
changes his attitude in the way he sees life. He gets the girl, he gets the happiness he was looking
for, and he breaks the cycle. Existentialism is demonstrated in the movie when we can visually see
that Phil can change his view towards life so he could live a better

Blues Boundaries And The Blues Angela Davis Analysis

History of the Blues
Professor House
Did Angela Davis get it wrong?
As a consequence of slavery and segregation, Angela Y. Davis contends in Blues
Legacies and Black Feminism, her study of the recordings of Billie Holiday and the blues
vaudevillians Gertrude (Ma) Rainey and Bessie Smith, black social consciousness has been
overdetermined by race, with too little attention paid to sex and virtually none to class. Davis, a
professor of something called the history of consciousness at the University of California,
Santa Cruz, would have a hard time selling such a notion to this country s black poor, who are
understandably inclined to blame the legacy of white racism for their poverty. But she s right in
step with the more radical of her academic colleagues, even if her ingrained cultural nationalism
prevents her from joining them in dismissing race as an arbitrary social construct with no basis in
anthropology. Race, according to current academic thinking, is a smokescreen that has drawn
discussion away from the more crucial issue of class.
If this sounds suspiciously like Marxism, it is Marxism gone post modern: a tool for the
analysis of literary and other texts, not necessarily a call for the exploited masses to rise. One
of the side effects of this recent trend has been to restore the credibility of certain black
intellectuals and activists of the 1960 s and 70 s, whose Marxist ideals might otherwise make
them seem like relics not of their own day but of the 1930 s. Davis made the news in 1969, when
the Regents of the University of California attempted to bar her from teaching at U.C.L.A.
because she was a member of the Communist Party, and again a year later, when she briefly
became a fugitive after being accused of supplying the brother of George Jackson with the
firearms for his one man raid on a Marin County courthouse. (Jonathan Jackson was killed,
along with three others, in the ensuing shootout. Davis was later apprehended, tried and
acquitted.)
Davis s thesis in Blues Legacies and Black Feminism, in a nutshell, is that Ma Rainey
and Bessie Smith, among other flamboyant women blues singers

Hell s Angels By Hunter S. Thompson Summary
Hunter S. Thompson was the author of Hell s Angles published in 1967 by Random House. In
this book Thompson follows Hell s Angles for a two year period, focusing on the Oakland and
San Francisco chapters. The Hell s Angels were known for their violent nature and disregard for
authority. Thompson illustrates this by saying, when you re asked to stay out of a bar you don t
just punch the owner. You come back with your army and tear the place down, destroy the whole
edifice and everything it stand for. No compromise. If a man gets wise, mash his face. If a woman

This style of journalism is a first person narrative to report on personal experiences and emotions,
compared with traditional journalism, which relies on some degree of detachment and with its
use of facts and quotations. Hell s Angels should be regarded as an important piece of journalism
because, Thompson reported on events that were relevant to the counter culture and the struggles
of defying social status in the United States. Furthermore the events that are covered in this book
were of interest to people throughout the nation. This book would be of interest to a wide variety
of people. For instance, motorcycle enthuses would likely take interest because, the book is about
a notorious motorcycle gang. People interested in counter culture might also take an interest in this
book due to the fact that the Hell s Angles questioned the social class system. Even people
interested in sociology could also take an interest in the book because, sociology is the study of the
development, structure, and functioning of human society ad social problems. A sociology

Examine and Assess How Political Order Is Made and Repaired
Examine and assess how political order is made and repaired.
In this TMA I will examine and assess how political order is made mainly through the state. In
order to create, maintain and repair political order, the state needs authority from its citizens to do
so and this authority needs to be legitimate. Legitimacy refers to a belief in the states rightness, its
right to rule or the idea that its authority is proper. I will then explain how today, legitimacy is
closely linked to democracy and it is through free and fair elections that the state receives
legitimacy. The degree to which individuals legitimise the state is varied and individuals or groups
of people can also engage critically with the state.
Creating political ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One way citizens can legitimise their relationship with the state is through citizenship ceremonies
however most citizens do not attend such ceremonies.
Many of the everyday practises and discourses of the state, its discourses, its symbols and the ways
in which state actors and institutions represent themselves to the people, are involved in the process
of legitimation; that is to say, the states claim of legitimacy from its citizens. So through peoples
everyday practises and activities like paying taxes or taking the car for an MOT individuals are
involved in the making and remaking of the state. This is another way through which people
legitimise the state.
However, one of the main ways individuals express their acceptance or rejection of the state is
through the ballot box. Elections provide a means for people to question and reflect on this or
that government policy, the adequacy of this or that government agency, or the talents and policies
of this or that party, candidate or official. Today we would see free and fair democratic elections
as the main, if not the only, reasonable indicator of whether people have given express consent to
those who hold state derived power over them.
Its possible to see that state legitimacy is closely linked to democracy. This is because through
democracy the state claims legitimacy to rule over people in a certain territory. Democracy is a
form of political order few dare to oppose (Sen) even if they

The Three Day Battle Of Gettysburg
The three day Battle of Gettysburg, starting on July 1st in 1863, would be known to be one of
the most memorable and important battles in history. It would become the major outcome of the
Civil War. The day of the outburst of the Battle of Gettysburg was a hot humid day on the first of
July. It was between two sides. One side was the Union, which was the Army of Potomac
Commanded by General George G. Meade, along with other notable commanders such as John F
Reynolds, Winfield Scott Hancock, Daniel E. Sickles, George Sykes, John Sedgwick, Oliver O.
Howard, Henry W. Slocum, and Alfred Pleasonton ( Battle of Gettysburg, 2016). The other side
was the Confederate Soldiers called the Army of Northern Virginia who was commanded by
General Robert E. Lee, along with other notable commanders as well, which were James
Longstreet, Richard S. Ewell, A. P. Hill, and J.E.B. Stuart ( Battle of Gettysburg, 2016). Between
these two sides, the Army of Potomac had a great advantage with 93,700 men and 372 guns, while
the Army of Northern Virginia were outmanned and outgunned with only 70,100 men and 280
guns. The Army of Potomac s mission was to defeat the Army of Northern Virginia as well as to
make sure Washington, D.C. remained safe. It may seem like the Army of Potomac would be the
clear winner at the Battle of Gettysburg yet the Army of Northern Virginia had a strategy that would

As the daughters grow, they portray certain characteristics similar to their mothers. Once Waverly
learns how to play chess and competes against former champions, she uses her wind , which she

Because the daughters do not understand what qualities they have inherited, they have become

Religion In The 19th Century
A set of beliefs, rituals, and practices that serve to define the matter of existence; religion. Present
in society, religion sets precedents unifying its followers but religion also can prove to be a
centrifugal force within large countries. The more diverse a country is, the more it fosters different
views and perspectives. These opposing sides happen to restrict reforming policies in government
and affects societal norms. This is exemplified in the Ottoman Empire, where its state religionof

world lost a lot of its cultural and political sovereignty which indicated a shift in the political
landscape of the world and a technological gap between both societies (Baraz, 2010). The Ottoman

Shintoism, Buddhism and Confucianism are numerous religions in Japan however all three
doctrines showed an importance in nature and an individual s surroundings. With Japan being
homogenous, this one common concept kept the whole public together because they shared a

other religions to exist. Unfortunately for the minorities, they had to pay taxes such as the jizya.
This action taken by the Ottoman government showed a preference to who they supported which
then spurred ideas of independence or revolution from different religious groups or even sects such

Customer Loyalty And Brand Loyalty Essay
The term Brand Loyalty also called as Customer Loyalty has been in the business industry since a
very long time as a model to be used in conducting business. But it wasn t until the mid to late 1900
s that the term was actually given its due importance by making it a vital part of advertising and
marketing. The concept of marketing evolved substantially from being focused on sales of a product
to having Customer satisfaction to be its focal point. Studies further revealed that there was a
positive correlation between customer satisfaction and BrandLoyalty.
The behavior in which a consumer keeps buying a product time and again instead of buying
products from other competitive companies is called Brand Loyalty. Brand loyalty can often be
termed as Customer Loyalty, Brand Commitment, Product Loyalty etc. Brand Loyalty is seen
among consumers when they realize that the product is better than the other products that are
available in the market. This affinity of a consumer towards a particular product is considered to be
brand loyalty. Although, this consumer behavior is not limited to a simple repetition of a purchase,
there is also a psychological reasoning behind the consumers affinity towards behavior.
The concept of Brand loyalty is defined in terms of 6 necessary and sufficient conditions. These
conditions are as follows:
1.Biased (i.e., nonrandom),
2.Behavioral response,
3.Expressed over time,
4.Some decision making unit,
5.With respect to 1 or more

Life In Christianity Vs. The Afterlife Of Christianity
Heaven preached in the Bible is considered paradise, with streets of gold and mansions built for
everyone who resides there. This place is as easy to get to as hell, all one has to do is ask Jesus
into their hearts and lives, but living life as a Christian is very difficult yet rewarding. Christians
are always prosecuted and in certain parts of the world, Christianityis forbidden and if found out
could result in execution. Nevertheless, dying as a martyr in the name of the lord is of the highest
reward. So the afterlife of Christianity is very much different compared to the afterlife of Hinduism
because in Christianity there is no reincarnation, and only one heavenand hell, and good works
cannot get you to heaven, only admitting that you re a sinner and repenting of your sins, and
accepting Jesus will can ultimately give you everlasting life in Heaven. Life as a nonbeliever is a
sure way to get you to hell, which is what many believers fear. If you follow the Lord s word,
repent of your sins, and accept Jesus into your heart, you will make it to the promise from... Show

Fast Track Network Protocol Is Unique
As already discussed, this Fast Track network protocol is unique. This has become the point of
curiosity for individuals and firms to try and halt the Fast Track protocol.
Thus the majority would be the giFT project. With reference to Bergner, the preliminary indication
of giFT was the regularly used interface to FastTrack. This giFT almost reached the point to break
the FastTrack protocol. Therefore, FastTrack responded by customizing their encryption technique
making it more complex.
Since the FastTrack protocol became more complex, the giFT changed to enhance a system that can
accumulate many assorted heterogeneous networks and even then, acted as an entity which can
share files.
From then on, it was transformed to giFT Internet File Transport. This transformation triggered the
development of a brand new and improvised network protocol very similar to FastTrack. That is
known as OpenFT.
6.1The OpenFT Architecture
OpenFT protocol divides the peers in its domain into different roles but instead of 2 tier
architecture, it has added an extra tier building 3 tier control architecture as demonstrated in the
figure.
Peers are divided into different categories based on few factors. They are network access
performance, processing speed, usage of its memory as well as accessibility.
The first tier is made up of numerous traditional machines which are also called as User peers.
Every peer in this tier has connections to big group of search peers. The user peers later on might

At that time the mercenary didn t know how wrong he was because the boy knew all there was to

The Government And Its Infringement On Privacy
The Government and its Infringement on Privacy
Is anyone s private information contained in their cell phone actually private? Are appointments,
bank information, conversations, the user s location or other sensitive personal information truly
confidential? Is there a Big Brother watching? There is no definitive answer to any of these
questions. From the beginning of time to now, privacy has become more and more scarce. Through
new developments in technology, it is hard to believe that someone is not watching your move at
any given moment. The government s job is to keep Americans safe, but where is the line drawn?
Where is the difference between having a reasonable doubt and accessing information solely

Americans are subject to invasion of privacy by the government through the new wave of social
media and technology, new surveillance technologies and the ongoing war on terrorism.
One of the reasons cell phone privacy has become a controversial issue is due to cell phones and
other forms of technology becoming increasingly popular and widespread, especially amongst
American people. As of 2014, in fact, there were over 355 million cell phone subscriptions in the
U.S. according to the Cellular Telecommunications International ( Wireless Communications:
Voice and Data Privacy 1). This number has only increased exponentially as more people are
being attracted to the accessibility of Smartphones in particular. The reason many people are
afraid of their lives being violated, especially by the government, is because in today s society,
someone s entire life is on their cell phone. Every second of every day, that phone tracks where
people are, what people are doing, who people are with, and every other minor detail of life that
one might not want others to know. Eric Zeman from Opposing Viewpoints describes
Smartphones as being both a best friend and worst enemy (132). This is due to the fact that it can
be beneficial, but if it falls into the wrong hands it can be devastating and put one at risk.
Likewise, the government might be the ones trying to access the cell phone, the device with all

side of the road when she was too tired to continue driving, as well as the car dealership. Due to
the budget constraints the films crew were made up of mostly people who were working on the,
Alfred Hitchcock Presents television show. The film is about a man named Norman Bates, who
runs a motel owned by his family. Norman is a victim of his ill mothers love. His mother becomes
violent when Norman s attention has been detracted from her needs. This film is a study of

Coming To High School
Is the next big step coming? From middle school to high school? To be a successful student in
high school, incoming freshmen need to listen to directions, study and be prepared, and give full
effort best on testing. A successful freshman always follows the directions the first time they are
given. Many teachers like to explain directions only once and so they do not have to say it
multiple times. Teachers do not like to become repetitive with what they are saying and do not
want to say the same thing multiple times. Listening can also keep a student up with everything to
include in an assignment. It is extremely important to receive all the steps for upcoming tests,
projects, or other assignments. This can help attain a high grade in the class. Lastly, it can keep
teachers in a good mood for a class. If the teacher of the class is in a good mood, the class will be

a time, therefore it is a must that students study and know the information. The material will be
much easier to remember if it is studied. Seeing the information multiple times and outside of the
class will help to remember it and help it to stick to a student s brain, and studying is one of the
better ways to do that. Teachers will always be able to aid students with studying. Study halls,

The White Spire Essay
There are rumors going about the White Spire. The mages murmur about a murderer in their
midst (Alliteration), careful to keep their conversations behind closed doors and their voices
hushed. They believe the murderer to be a corrupt templar, or perhaps even a virulent traitor
among their own kin. The truth is far more extreme and inexplicable than they realize, however.
The murderer of the White Spire is Cole. What Cole exactly is, not even he knows. Perhaps he is
simply a boy that was forgotten and left to rot in the tower s dungeon, emaciated and dying, and
twisted his magicinto a new form to survive. Perhaps he s a lost spirit, confused and disconcerted,

It s even harder to be the mother of a son who was estranged at birth due to both parent and child
being mages. This is the position Wynne finds herself in. Wynne is an elderly senior enchanter
with an abundance of friends in high places and and even greater abundance of stubbornness.
Wynne is the wind, usually an understanding and placid breeze, but able to be whipped up into
great gusts of fervor if it fits her fancy (Metaphor). She can be wrathful, but can also be genial
and compassionate. This nurturing side is shown through her relationship with Rhys, her son: I
had to see you, at least once ...reaching out, she cupped his cheek; it was a gentle, affectionate
gesture (Gaider 324). Likewise, this tenderness can be compared to the song I ll Keep You Safe
by Sleeping At Last. The piece accurately illustrates the mentor like figure Wynne attempts to be
for Rhys: ...try hard to concentrate, hold out your hand... the whole world at your fingertips...
our mistakes they were bound to be made, I promise you I ll keep you safe (Cite). Despite the
fact that she didn t raise Rhys herself, and only meets him twice in her life, she loves him.
Throughout the book, Wynne tries to get closer to her son, and he becomes one of her most
essential priorities. In the final battle, she sacrifices her own life to save the woman Rhys loves,

Santa Ana Winds Comparison Rhetorical Analysis
The Santa Ana Winds The Santa Ana by Joan Didion and Brush Fire by Linda Thomas offer
complete separate views to a similar topic, the winds of Southern California. In a first person
narration the authors write of the wind from her own experience of living in California and from
her own perspective, shedding light on two very different aspects of the Santa Ana winds.
Physically, both pieces of literature are different. Each story reflects its own writer as The Santa

Didion personifies the wind as almost an unknown epidemic. Similar to when an unknown
disease goes viral, all walks of life are affected. Didion clearly states how teachers, students,
doctors, to physicists, to generally everyone becomes unhappy and uncomfortable during the
winds. She does not write of how the wind caused fire to ravage the shrublands, but she writes of
the symptoms it inflicts on the people. Didion mentions all the after effects of the wind and the
harm it can do like inflict paranoia. She mentions how the fear stricken victims of southern
California are paranoid like her neighbor that refuses to leave the house and her husband who
roams with a machete. Didion s personification of the wind focuses on a fearful and distant light. In
contrast, Thomas approaches the Santa Ana winds as a routinely destructive awe. Though Thomas
focuses more on the fire caused by the wind, then the wind itself, Thomas casts a soft light on the
winds. She believes that the winds are not destructive, but that humans are and the winds only do
what they must. She and her neighbors gather around and watch the brushfire destroy a hill in the
distance, a casual pastime like watching stars. Thomas casually explains in paragraph three of
Brush Fire , the burning of chaparral during these winds is normal . She implies that the winds
cause of destroying the Southern California land is natural, a simple part of nature. Thomas does
not fear the winds like Didion, she admires the

Night By Elie Wiesel And Maus By Art Spiegelman
Surviving Life from Compassion from Others For most people, survival is just putting food on
the table. In contrast, prisoners in the Holocaust had to worry about even getting food or even
having shelter, like the Holocaust texts Night by Elie Wiesel and Maus by Art Spiegelman show
vivid examples of how advice from others helped them survive. In life and death situations, others
compassion will increase one s chances of survival.
In the novel Night, compassion from the Kapo and the French Woman gives Elie a greater chance
of survival. In the beginning of the novel, people gave compassion to others even while they
were in life and death situations, and this continued throughout the novel. When the French
Woman is gives advice to Elie, the woman says, Bite your lips, little brother . . . Don t cry. Keep
your anger, your hate, for another day, for later. The day will come but not now . . . Wait.
Clench your teeth and wait . . . (53). The French woman is showing Elie compassion by
consoling Elie that all of this pain will bring you to a day that Elie will be thankful for. The
woman is risking her own safety, by giving advice to Elie to help him survive. When they are
beginning the first selection, the Kapo is giving ways to Elie to pass the selection. During the
first selection, the Kapo states, Before you go into the next room, try to move your limbs, give
yourself color. Don t walk slowly, run! Run as if you had the devil at your heels! (71). The Kapo is

  • 2. The Bourne Identity Book and Film Comparison Essay xxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxx English Lit. and Composition 16 December 2013 Book and Film Comparison The Bourne Identity Robert Ludlum Richard Marek Publishers; First Edition edition (1980) Setting The setting of the novel takes place largely in Europe. The story opens in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of France. The story moves throughout France largely in Paris. Zurich, Switzerland is also a major setting. New York City and Washington, D.C. also play lesser but important roles. The story ends in the upper west side of Manhattan in New York City. Other parts of the world are alluded to as well, especially Southeast Asia. Point of view/ person: The point of view is written in the first person, however, the point of view ... The Bourne Identity co stars Chris Cooper, Clive Owen, Brian Cox, and Julia Stiles. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi III. Effectiveness/ Success of the Adaptation: It would be futile to compare this movie with the book, as the movie ignores most of the plot in the book, only keeping the element of an amnesiac agent. Although they share a name, The Bourne Identity by Robert Ludlum and its movie adaptation have very little to nothing in common. (see Fig 1.0) Compared side by side, the movie will hardly cover the first 3 chapters of the book. The book describes a man who is found shot in the ocean without his memory. He is saved by a couple of men and taken to a doctor on land who helps him regain his strength and begin to remember his past. The man travels to Zurich because of a negative found implanted in his body that leads to a bank. There, he is ambushed by enemies he knows not, and with the help of an unwilling woman named Marie St. Jacques he escapes. The man, whose name is discovered to be Jason Bourne, and Marie fall in love and end up in Paris. Variances between movie and book In the Book In the Movie ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Leo Tolstoy s The Death Of Ivan Ilych How should life be lived? This is a question that people repeatedly ask themselves during their life. Outside influences, such as the media, celebrities, and peer pressure force people to search for the answer to this question. As a result, many books have been written about how life should be lived, one of these being The Deathof Ivan Ilych. In this novella, Leo Tolstoy tells the reader how to live a good life by describing the life and death of someone who lived the simplest, the most ordinary, and the most awful kind of life (95). Tolstoy achieves his purpose by using different figures of speech; specifically, he uses irony to demonstrate how Ivan, the main character, lived a bad life, personification to show why he lived a bad life, and rhetorical questions to explain how life should be lived.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As described in Chapters 2 and 3, Ivan had slowly lost his moral compass between the ages of 18 and 45. At first, he felt guilty for doing horrid things at school, but when he later on realized that people of high status also did those horrid things, he lost this sense of guilt. This loss caused him to do many other horrid actions, such as having an affair, drinking profusely, possibly meeting with a prostitute, and badly manipulating others. Due to his new focus on work, though, he had begun to earn more money, which caused him to view his life as very nice (110). This is an example of irony to show how disconnected Ivan had become with the state of his inner self. Later on in the novella when Ivan was near death, he realizes this irony, saying, I had been going steadily downhill, imagining that I was going uphill ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Socrates served 27 years in prison after killing two of his friends while drunken. Furtlow was now living life as a bumb who went around selling old bottles and cans to make a living. This story tells his struggle to find honorable work as a black man in society because of his background. He ended up lying on his application because he was afraid of what people might think. But first you looked at my chothes and at my bald head. First yo eyes said that this is some kinda old hobo and what do he want here when it ain t bottle redemption time. (Gates and McKay p. 2626) Everyone should have an equal opportunity in getting a job and at least a fair chance with an application. After Socrates and Anton discussed their rights and the law the assistant manager went to the main office to fetch and application. The elevated office looked over all the checkout counters and where Socrates stood waiting. Socrates was then center of attention to all the bag boys and checkers as they all knew their boss, Anton was unhappy. Anton and an older white woman exchanged a few words then she handed him the application and he stormed back down to Socrates. Rudely handing him the app Anton was about to go on with his day but Socrates wanted a pencil to fill it out and give it back. He had come a long way to turn in an application not just receive a sheet of paper and wasn t leaving until he did so. Thirty minutes later Socrates stood at the foot of the stairs leading up to the main office with his almost completed application in hand. Nearly forty minutes passed and he knew they could see him and he could see them but he waited patiently, on the outside, though inside he was thinking of throwing a brick through the window. • 6. Nuclear Power Plants and Nuclear Waste The purpose of a nuclear power plant is to produce electricity for supporting increases in consumption. Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) defines nuclear energy as the energy released by a nuclear reaction, especially by fission or fusion. In general terms, nuclear energy uses fuel made from mined and processed uranium to make steam and generate electricity (ENEC 2011). Nuclear powerplant currently producing electricity in the U.S include the Pressurized Water Reactor and the Boiling Water Reactor. To illustrate the importance of nuclear energy to the United States, 20% of our nation s electricity production comes from the 104 commercially operating reactors (Funk and Socacool 2012). However, security issues surrounding nuclear power lead to the U.S nuclear regulatory agencies imposing strict regulations on the production of nuclear energy. As a result, development and construction time of a nuclear power plant is a complex process. Before an applicant can start building a nuclear power plant, it must receive approval from the U.S Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Previous regulations required that a nuclear power plant was licensed under a two step licensing process (NRC 2004). This former process required both a construction permit and an operating license (NRC 2004). In 1989, the NRC established an alternative licensing process which formed a joint license between the construction permit and an operating license (NRC 2004). Following approval from the U.S NRC ... • 7. Abe Lincoln and Slavery Essay Abraham was born a poor farmhand boy in Kentucky, but he moved from small cabins in Kentucky, Indiana, and finally settled in Illinois. He was a farmhand for his father in these states and didn t have much exposure to slavery, although, these states did have black/slave laws. Lincoln got his first dose of slavery at the age of eighteen when he was hired to take a flatboat down to New Orleans. I quote from Lincoln: A Photobiography Lincoln would never forget the site of black men, women, and children being driven along in chains and being auctioned off like cattle. This still didn t change his opinion on slavery (he didn t have one). In 1846, after experience in law and the Illinois state legislature, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the Kansas Nebraska Act repealed the Missouri Compromise by allowing slavery in the Louisiana territory forbidden by the Compromise Lincoln was rocketed into an abolitionist standpoint. He spoke against Stephen Douglas act and campaigned for anti slavery Whigs. Lincoln spoke harshly against slavery, even going so far as to call it a cancer . In 1856 Lincoln switched to the Republican Party solely because the Whigs couldn t be absolutely against slavery as a party, while the Republicans strongly disfavored slavery. In 1858 Lincoln fought against Stephen Douglas in a battle for the senate. They held three debates, Lincoln strongly favoring abolition while Douglas stayed at a position in which he believed in white supremacy saying, I am not in favor of Negro equality . At this point in his life Lincoln was a leading abolitionist and fully fledged against slavery. Lincoln lost the election by a slim margin but didn t even stop fighting; in fact the fight had just begun. Lincoln was elected to run for the Republican president in 1860. Lincoln new that since he strongly despised slavery that he wasn t going to win any slave states; so he strongly campaigned in the north. For this action he became the president elect. Because of his election, South Carolina seceded from the union. Lincoln wanted to preserve the union without bloodshed, but that didn t happen. • 8. Analysis Of Porosity And Temperature By Qinwu Xu Porosity and Temperature By Qinwu Xu, October 17, 2016 Introduction Metal primarily exhibits plastic and ductile behaviors in the cutting process in which its behavior is often assumed to be isotropic and homogeneous [1]. The large deformation and unconstrained plastic flow nature of machining metals can be modeled with an unstructured tetrahedral mesh, allowing for the adaptive local refinement and coarsening to alleviate mesh distortions, maintain simulation accuracy and reasonable computational performance. However, modeling of ceramic matrix composites could be much more complex due to the unique feature of this type of material: 1) the fracture and brittle behavior of materials; and b) the nonuniform distribution of porosity in the ceramic matrix. CMCs are comprised of individual layers with unique material properties dependent on fiber orientation within the polymer matrix which is typically in a woven pattern. Therefore, CMCs often exhibit anisotropic or orthotropic properties, and have lower strains and higher degrees of fragmentations than metallic materials during machining. The unique features of CMCs make simulations more challenging due to the complex nature of the problem considering material nonlinear fracture, anisotropic or orthotropic property and multi phase interaction apart from dynamic loading and plastic deformation in machining of metals. Different modeling approaches have been studied for modeling the machining of composites and CMCs, including ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Trying To Overcome Violence Sociology Throughout the course of time, violence has been used as a tactic when trying to achieve something that one does not have already. Some may say that it is a useful tactic, while others strongly disagree. Although there are scenarios when one has to take risks. For example, if a business manager needs to keep his company up and running and needs to take risk for the better of his life and the ones around him, I wouldn t be totally disgusted with him/her. Personally, in the terms of economics and trying to overcome a conflict, I am on the fence and agree with both sides of the argument. Honestly, it could go both ways, it s just scaled on how far he/she takes the violenceand how it s affecting the community around. If one were to support the side of violence, and agree that it is a solid and profound way ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Violence is not something we as human beings are supposed to be doing. Like I said before, Mac and his plan to sabotage that innocent man did result in a positive strike for what the people believed in. Yet, he also did break that man s leg. There are many examples in life that make it easier to overcome if you incorporate violence. It might just not be the moral thing to do as a human being. In addition, in the novel we just read, violence only happened because it was needed to prove a point to the Grower s Organization and the highest class. Same thing is needed in any other strikes happening around the world today. In our life today, everything human beings say or do atomatically involves and disappoints somebody else. • 12. The Black Hole, An Area Of Spacetime The black hole, an area of spacetime thats gravity is so strong that it can prevent anything from escaping, even light. Contrary to popular belief, black holes are not empty holes in space, but rather a massive amount of matter packed into a small area. The graphic to the right shows the simulated view of a black holein front of a Large Magellanic Cloud. The theory of these black holes was conceived in Einstein s theory of general relativity. It predicts that a plentiful compact mass will contort spacetime and create a black hole. The black hole acts like a perfect black body, in the sense that it reflects no light. The area where the nothing can escape is the event horizon. This event horizon has no features that can be detected from close up, and has huge effects on what will happen to the object that crosses it. Also, according to the to quantum field theory in curved spacetime, an event horizon will emit a black body radiation, also known as Hawking radiation. The graphic to the right shows where the event horizon, and the black hole itself, are located. It also shows the accretion disk, which is formed when matter falls into a black hole and is heated by friction. It is believed that black holes of extreme mass form when giant stars collapse. After this event, its continues to grow by absorbing the mass from its surroundings. The way scientists can tell the age of a black hole is by using the orbits of stars around it. That analysis determined the two hundred dollars currently contributed monthly to each child s college fund since each child was born will not fully fund their educations, given their ages, current balances in each college fund and the annual inflation of college costs. However, it is equally important for other potential forms of financial aid as many states and colleges use your FAFSA data to determine your eligibility for state and school aid, and some private financial aid providers may use your FAFSA information to determine whether you qualify for their aid (Federal Student Aid, 2017, p.1). Federal Student Aid is a very large program providing more than $150 billion in federal grants, loans, and work study funds each year to more than 13 million students paying for college or career school (Federal Student Aid, 2017, p.1). Therefore, the student who is seeking financial aid to cover a portion of college costs needs to first and foremost complete a FAFSA application as it is the basis for Federal Student Aid but is also the data source for other forms of student financial aid. FAFSA applications consider the assets of the parents and the student in determining the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) and will normally expect a higher percentage of contribution from student assets vice a lower percentage from the parents (Mannaioni Greer 2016). For determining family or student assets to be assessed against potential financial aid, FAFSA places emphasis on family or student adjusted gross income as other assets such as retirement accounts, cash value life insurance, home equity and small business assets are excluded when calculating the EFC. For example, Phil keeps reliving Groundhog Day while Sisyphus has to roll a rock up a hill for eternity. Another example of how Phil s and Sisyphus scenarios are similar is how they got themselves into repeating the same day over. • 31. Blues Boundaries And The Blues Angela Davis Analysis Rebekah Scarborough 15 December 2017 History of the Blues Professor House Did Angela Davis get it wrong? As a consequence of slavery and segregation, Angela Y. Davis contends in Blues Legacies and Black Feminism, her study of the recordings of Billie Holiday and the blues vaudevillians Gertrude (Ma) Rainey and Bessie Smith, black social consciousness has been overdetermined by race, with too little attention paid to sex and virtually none to class. Davis, a professor of something called the history of consciousness at the University of California, Santa Cruz, would have a hard time selling such a notion to this country s black poor, who are understandably inclined to blame the legacy of white racism for their poverty. But she s right in step with the more radical of her academic colleagues, even if her ingrained cultural nationalism prevents her from joining them in dismissing race as an arbitrary social construct with no basis in anthropology. Race, according to current academic thinking, is a smokescreen that has drawn discussion away from the more crucial issue of class. If this sounds suspiciously like Marxism, it is Marxism gone post modern: a tool for the analysis of literary and other texts, not necessarily a call for the exploited masses to rise. One of the side effects of this recent trend has been to restore the credibility of certain black intellectuals and activists of the 1960 s and 70 s, whose Marxist ideals might otherwise make them seem like relics not of their own day but of the 1930 s. Davis made the news in 1969, when the Regents of the University of California attempted to bar her from teaching at U.C.L.A.

The Roman empire hired the Visigoths as mercenaries to guard the borders they has become laxe in watching. Eventually, Aleric and the Visigoths invade Rome and tack over some of the Western Empire. In this TMA I will examine and assess how political order is made mainly through the state. In order to create, maintain and repair political order, the state needs authority from its citizens to do so and this authority needs to be legitimate. Legitimacy refers to a belief in the states rightness, its right to rule or the idea that its authority is proper. I will then explain how today, legitimacy is closely linked to democracy and it is through free and fair elections that the state receives legitimacy. The degree to which individuals legitimise the state is varied and individuals or groups of people can also engage critically with the state. Creating political ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One way citizens can legitimise their relationship with the state is through citizenship ceremonies however most citizens do not attend such ceremonies. Many of the everyday practises and discourses of the state, its discourses, its symbols and the ways in which state actors and institutions represent themselves to the people, are involved in the process of legitimation; that is to say, the states claim of legitimacy from its citizens. So through peoples everyday practises and activities like paying taxes or taking the car for an MOT individuals are involved in the making and remaking of the state. This is another way through which people legitimise the state. However, one of the main ways individuals express their acceptance or rejection of the state is through the ballot box. Elections provide a means for people to question and reflect on this or that government policy, the adequacy of this or that government agency, or the talents and policies of this or that party, candidate or official. Today we would see free and fair democratic elections as the main, if not the only, reasonable indicator of whether people have given express consent to those who hold state derived power over them. Its possible to see that state legitimacy is closely linked to democracy. This is because through democracy the state claims legitimacy to rule over people in a certain territory. Wynne is an elderly senior enchanter with an abundance of friends in high places and and even greater abundance of stubbornness. Wynne is the wind, usually an understanding and placid breeze, but able to be whipped up into great gusts of fervor if it fits her fancy (Metaphor). She can be wrathful, but can also be genial and compassionate. This nurturing side is shown through her relationship with Rhys, her son: I had to see you, at least once ...reaching out, she cupped his cheek; it was a gentle, affectionate gesture (Gaider 324). Didion s personification of the wind focuses on a fearful and distant light. In contrast, Thomas approaches the Santa Ana winds as a routinely destructive awe. Though Thomas focuses more on the fire caused by the wind, then the wind itself, Thomas casts a soft light on the winds. She believes that the winds are not destructive, but that humans are and the winds only do what they must.
