Stop And Frisk Thesis
The law of stop and frisk gives police the constitutional right for a brief and limited search of the
outer garments for weapons only if they have reasonable suspicion that the person is involved in a
crime. My thesis statement is that The enforcement of this law is unfair to black and latino males
who seem to make up 90 percent of those stopped by police. I intend to prove this thesis statement
by using data, website information, and law books to show that this law is ineffective and only
used to racially profile innocent people. Another thing about the stop and frisk this police
investigation tool is making people feel like prisoners in their own communities. They can t come
and go as they please without fear about getting

Even now, before the recession lifts, our research suggests that most global companies are running
into staffing problems in emerging markets, and they are also having a difficult time
п¬Ѓnding talented younger managers to replace baby boom retirees. These problems will be made
all the worse because, we ve found, current hiring practices are haphazard at best and ineffective at
worst. And even when companies find the right people, they have difficulty retaining them.
This article offers our best thinking about the most effective way to hire top level managers, based
on a combination of our own and established research about the relationship between recruiting and
long term corporate performance (see the research sidebar). The following is, to our knowledge, the
п¬Ѓrst time that an end to end set of best practices has been put forward in one place. Our
compendium comprises seven steps, which cover the full recruitment spectrum: anticipating the

Escherichia Coli
Bacteria are minute prokaryotic organisms that are individually too small to be seen by the naked
eye. The majority of bacteria make crucial contributions to the benefit of the planet by maintaining
a good balance of living organisms and chemicals existent in the environment. However, a minority
of bacteriacan be harmful to the human body, often being associated with death and disease and
the causative agents of food spoilage. A bacterium that has a variety of both good and bad is
Escherichia Coli, most commonly referred to as E. Coli. E. Coli is a rod shaped bacterium that is
found in the intestinal tracts of warm blooded organisms, more commonly that of cattle. Having

Current biological research investigations show that both lemon and lime juices have an affect on
slowing down and potentially stopping the growth of Escherichia Bacteria by creating an inhibition
zone. This can be seen in an experimental report done by Dr. Zahra Muhsin Ali Antagonism activity
of citrus fruit juices on some pathogenic bacteria. The experiment was conducted in the Biological
Department of Science at Kufa University to determine the antagonism activity of both Lemon and
Lime juices against various bacterium, one of them being E. Coli. The results of the experiment
revealed that each juice concentration had inhibiting effects against bacteria due to the presence of
citric acid and some volatile oils. The results also showed a reduction in the value of pH. The
investigation was further proved successful due to both juices from lemon and lime were found to
have inhibited the E. Coli bacterium parameter with an inhibition zone ranging from 8 29mm which
can be seen in figure 4. The antagonism effects of the lemon and lime juice was compared with the
antagonism effects of some antibiotics, the results being that the isolated E. Coli was resistant to
the majority of antibiotics. Proving that overall the experiment conducted was successful

Although Under Armour has done well over the past few years, they face though competition from
top players like Nike and Adidas. These larger companies have more resources and a greater
presence in the international market. There is also a threat of new entrants, and since UA does not
hold patents for its products, new and existing companies may begin to compete for a spot in the
performance apparel market. Other threats include the company s limited bargaining power
(resulting from their diverse supplier base) and the leverage held by wholesale customers.
Fortunately, UA does have the advantage of strong brand recognition, a reputation for innovative
and high quality products, and testimonials of world renowned athletes, minimizing the threat of
substitute products. Although the company was established more than fifteen years ago, Under
Armour, Inc. continues to be in the growth phase of its life cycle. Revenues this quarter increased
almost 23% year over year, and the Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) for the last five years
is about 24%. This is higher than the average quarterly revenue growth (Y/Y) of 8% for the
apparel industry, and places UA above eight percent of its competitors. UA has also outperformed
most of its competitors in quarterly Earnings Per Share (EPS) growth. With an EPS Growth (Qtrly

Neighborhood Theories
Theories on Neighborhoods Defining a neighborhood, is a built community or unit that surrounds a
person, place, or object. Neighborhoods can be categorized into three subjects; upper class, middle
class, underclass. With this noted, one theory about neighborhoods is its relations with race and
income. As Reynold Farley discussed, ...the moves people make and assess the extent to which
neighborhood racial composition, independent of a variety of other individual and neighborhood
characteristics, leads people to make housing decisions that, taken together, contribute to persistent
patterns of segregation. Continuing this theorem, the cause and effect of these categories will cause

Essay on Gossip and Deceit in Much Ado About Nothing
Gossip and Deceit in Much Ado About Nothing Much Ado About Nothing is primarily a play
about gossip. Indeed, the title means a big fuss about a trifle, and by the end, this is exactly what
happens. All accusations will come to nothing, causing the play to end the same way as if they
never occurred at all. Shakespeare brilliantly plays on the meanings of nothing throughout this play.
The word nothing would actually have been pronounced noting in his time. It can mean worthless, a
person of little worth, or also mean everything, in the sense that much ado is made about everything
(Smith). Much of the plot is moved along by characters eavesdropping on a conversation and either

When the prince congratulates Claudio upon Hero s father s approval to marry him he begins to
be confused. In fact, it was the Prince wooing Hero for Claudio at the masked ball. Don John lied
to Claudio to create a disturbance at the ball. Don John s malevolent plan to ruin Claudio and Hero
s wedding was to take effect the night before they were to wed. The malicious Don John
constructed, or rather misconstructed, the scheme that insinuated Claudio s belief in Hero s
faithlessness. It is Don John who reports to Claudio and Don Pedro that Hero is having an affair,
and he who stage manages an elaborate charade featuring his own henchman Borachio and an
unwitting stand in for Hero to lend credence to this fiction. Perhaps the most significant thing to be
noted in connection with this deception is that the spectator does not witness the crucial scene in
which Claudio overhears the counterfeit exchanges between Margaret and Borachio that persuade
him of Hero s guilt. We learn of this episode only at second hand, when Borachio boasts of his
exploit (Lucking). The spectator of the play watches the Watchman watching Borachio while the
latter narrates what he calls his tale relating how Claudio was inveigled into watching an artificial
scene enacting Don John s fiction. Once again, what lies at the heart of this convoluted recursive
machinery is a nothing (a nocturnal tryst between Hero and

Industrialization after the Civil War
Industrialization after the Civil War Industrialization during the 1860 s through the 1900 s
caused many problems globally. Industrialization changed a lot in the US for Americans because
it made it easier for citizens to do labor work, expanded capital for businesses and opened up
many job opportunities for people. Although this was beneficial to the Americans it caused other
problems to escalate, and caused many people to flee into the cities, as well as caused a
differentiation between the rich and the poor. However, after the civil war, industrialization
affected the US politically, economically and environmentally way more than them benefitting
from it. The negative effect brought political controversy and resulting in riots, poor working
conditions, child labor, greed for the rich and immigrants also wanting to work and the positive
effect were improving and developing the south. Although, that was beneficial for the people as
industries, such as railroads and steel started to culminate throughout the North, there were a
greater need for workers (Lyson/Welsh 2005). Not only did Blacks come from the South for jobs
but immigrants started to flood the United States from other countries. Because the population
grew rapidly in the North, the factories were also over crowded with people including children.
Meanwhile, as the factories grew the factory owners cared less about the concerns of their people
or their cities welfare. The factories were unsafe, unsanitary, and smoky

Education may be helpful but, most woodworkers are trained primarily on the job learning from
experienced workers. With their on the job training they are given basic tasks, like placing a
piece of wood into the machine and stacking the finished product at the end of their process.
Throughout the training process as the worker gains experience they begin to perform more
defined tasks as of basic machine operations and job tasks with minimal supervision. To become
a truly skilled woodworker it would take several months to even years before that happens. To
have skilled worker abilities one would be able to set up machines, read blueprints, and be able to

John Collier Civil War
Collier (2003) also argues that economic agendas appear to be central to understanding why civil
wars start. Civil wars need both motive and opportunity incentives to start conflicts. However he
argues that opportunities are more important in explaining conflicts than motives. I think the new
trend to focus on the means of financing conflicts, coupled with the failure of rebel groups to
articulate and achieve their objectives, have led to a discourse to find rational arguments to dismiss
the grievance factor of conflicts as explained by Arowobusoye (2005). I would argue that identity
and ethnicity are major factors that are more accurate than the wareconomies in the instigation of
civil wars.
Collier (2003) used a causal effect approach ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I agree with these because big firms thrive through sharp practices and monopoly during war
while other small ventures become their victims. He also pointed out petit criminals as
beneficiaries of war. There is likely for an increase in criminality, governments reduces
expenditure on the police during conflict as they increase spending on the military. As a result,
the risks of punishment for criminal behavior decline as explained by Collier. I disagree with
this view as it is generalization. Only weak states experience increase in criminality as pointed
out by Singer (2003). Collier also pointed out in his analysis that government workers gain
during wars because government monopoly of violence becomes duopoly of violence because.
This is another generalization which I disagree with, government duopoly of violence only
happens in few societies. Moreover Collier didn t give examples of societies or states in which
these happened, which made it very difficult to verify. Overall Collier suggested that motives for
civil war (grievance) are not adequate explanation for the prediction of the outbreak of civil wars
instead opportunity and economic incentives has more explanatory power, justifying this with his
causal effect approach to civil

The Ancient Greek Chorus Influence On Modern Theatre
Referred to as the mouthpiece of society and morality , (E. Karayannakos, The Actors and The
Chorus, 2007), the Ancient Greek chorus used a range of vocal techniques and elements, which
have influenced and shaped western theatre as it is today (M. Mendenhall, Greek Theatre
Influences on Modern Theatre, 2012). From 7th Century BC to 4th Century BC, Greek choruses
are particularly renowned for their approach in engaging the audience with the context of a play. (B.
Simpson, Development of Greek Theatre, 2007), Specifically, vocal techniques played a main role
in this engagement (A. Thompson, The Ancient Greek Chorus and Elements of Choral Speaking,
2012) and are why this investigation is focused upon them. Primary data was collected through an...

Antigone believes that humanity or natural laws have priority over Creon s laws and disobeys his
instructions accordingly. Her pride ensures that she will die rather than renounce her beliefs,
thereby bringing further tragedy to other characters (J. Jennings, Summary of Antigone, 2011).
Antigone is a tragic play about defiance, law, death and love (B. Honig, Antigone Interrupted, 2013,
pg. 6). These elements make Antigone one of the most tragic plays in Ancient Greek Theatre as
multiple deaths of main characters occur within the traditional texts. In order to convey these
elements the chorus had a vital role in the process of the play. In Antigone , the chorus at times
would directly affect the action on. The chorus would interact with the actors on stage physically,
and through text which aloud a personal link and connection with the audience on stage (R.

Antigovernment Statements through Painting
While Van Gogh shut himself off from the world first, in rural Provence, and second, in an
asylum in Saint Remy, other artists have used their celebrity to draw attention to contemporary
political events, and to speak out against, and challenge the establishment. As mentioned above,
Warhol had made art from newspaper headlines, thus drawing attention to contemporary politics
on race in America. However, among the best known of such anti governmental statements is
Picasso s painting Guernica, which represents a passionate attack on Spain s fascist government
by the Spanish artist living in Paris. It portrays a scene of the German bombing, in 1937, of
Guernica, the Basque capital of Northern Spain, during the Spanish civil war, and became a
universal symbol of the atrocity of war. The scene is set within a room where, at an open end on
the left, a bull flails its tail as it stands over a woman grieving over the dead child in her arms.
The subjects in this painting are shown as innocent and helpless. The centre is occupied by a
horse, which falls in agony as it had just been run through by a spear or javelin. The large gaping
wound in its side is a major focus of the painting, reinforced by the human skull which overlays
the horse s body. On the open palm of the dead soldier in the foreground is a stigmata, a symbol
of martyrdom derived from a stigmata of Christ. A light bulb blazes in the shape of an evil eye
over the suffering horse s head, reminiscent of the bare bulb

Of Mice And Men American Dream Theme Essay
Of Mice and Men has many recurring themes throughout. One of the main themes is the
impossibility of the american dream. There are many characters that showed the theme. The
main characters George and Lennie showed it. Also Candy and Crooks shared a similar dream.
Another character that showed the theme was Curley s wife before she died. The impossibility
of the american dream is a major theme in Of Mice and Men. Lennie and George show this
theme very well. They have probably the biggest dream all. There dream is to own many acres
and have a farm. The aslo want to own rabbits (chapter 1). This dream travels throughout the
book, for example one day candy overhears Lennie and George talking about their dream and ask
them if he can join (chapter 3). The next day Lennie talks to crooks about their plans and dream
for a farm and crooks shows some interest in joining (chapter 4). This show the impossibility for an

Analysis Of The Film Delicatessen
1 . Introduction
This is the author account of the film Delicatessen. This is a post apocalyptic film set in France.
Meat and food is very scarce in this dark period for the world. This film has everything from
murder, sex, cannibalism to people living under the ground.
1.1 Methodology
The author was giving the film Delicatessen and told to deconstruct the film and give the author s
opinion on this strange film. The author watched the film a few times and read reviews online to
learn about the director and main actors and actress that starred in Delicatessen.
2.1 Food is Currency
There is no money in this post apocalyptic film so meat, corn, lentils and even sex is used to pay
for food. The people are using the barter system to trade by exchange of commodities rather than
money. Food was more important than money, you need to eat to survive, and meat is the top
commodity. The Kube brothers exchanged 2 bags of corn for nine hundred grams of shoulder
meat. And when they argue this Clapet told the brothers you get what you always get. Lentils were
seen as nothing as the taximan would not take lentils from Louison for his fair, instead he took his
shoes, even though taxi broke down before and Louison had pushed the car for miles.
2.2 Troglodytes
If you live underground you are regarded as being deliberately ignorant or old fashioned or even a
hermit why would anyone want to live underground. However in this film it is safer to live
underground than above it.The

China Is The Second Large Economy
Nowadays, everyone says China is the second large economy in the world. In 2015, GDP of
China reached $11,385 billion with a growth rate of 6.9%. Some people predict that one day
GDP of China will exceed GDP of U.S. and that day will come soon. Unquestionably, China is
growing rapidly and the Chinese economy is doing well, but does this mean the Chinese citizen
is at high utility level? The answer is no. The fact is that most of the Chinese citizens today are
facing the problem of unbalanced income and prices, which means the living costs are too high
while the salary rate is relatively low. Besides, China is developing rapidly these years, Chinese
people are demanding a better life which they want to eat better food, have a better education, and
live in a better house. Therefore, people in China today are confronting the problem. Why is this
problem occurring? Other than the high population rate of China, there are few more reasons: 1)
high taxrate, which cause high living expenses; 2) low social benefits, which mainly embodied in
high medical expenses; 3) unaffordable housing price, which some people cannot even afford a
house with mortgage, other people can only barely afford it but with overload pressure; 4) low
salary rate due to variety reasons; and 5) export too much products to U.S. causes inflation which
decreases RMB purchasing power, thus, prices for goods and services in the market increasing and
people can buy less with their salary. According to current

Roman Polanski s Film, The Pianist
Roman Polanski s film The Pianist follows the journey of a Polish Jew named Wladyslaw

soldiers and from this time up until the concentration camp prisoners are released. Hiding in

Lighting paired with the overall colour scheme leads the viewers to believe that something not
so good may occur soon. Sure enough, this is the scene when the first German bombs are
dropped in Warsaw 1939. From here on up until the turning point of the film the lighting is very
dark. I think that this is very important, as Polanski has done this in order to exaggerate and
evoke emotion within the audience. Another symbolic scene is when Szpilman is hiding in an
old abandon building he is approached by a German officer called Wilm Hosenfeld. Hosenfeld
orders Szpilman to play the piano, and at this time Hosenfeld s appearance is strong as we see in
a close up of Hosenfeld. The room is dark with grey lighting and Szpilman is thin, wearing frayed
dark clothing, he has blended in with the lighting and background. But as Szpilman begins to play
the piano, a veil of light shines on him. The veil of light then shifts onto Szpilman which portrays
him metaphorically as an angel, conveying that he is in a position of power, rather than Hosenfeld,
who previously was. This scene in particular with the light on Szpilman is a significant point in the
film because it is the turning point. Szpilman is weak, thin and the lighting leading up to this scene
is dark, then after this scene the lighting begins to brighten as well as Szpilman s life. Although we,
the audience do not think much of the lighting

The Impact Of Media On Body Dysmorphic Disorder Essay
Introduction In a generation filled with entertainment and technology, there are many
advertisements that exist. Advertisements, such as clothing advertisements, involve lots of touch
ups on the model, making what the world sees, a fake reality of what human body look like. For
some of the North American population, these advertisements do not affect them; they will look
at the body of the model and not think much of it. But for those who suffer from Body
Dysmorphic Disorder, this will affect them in a completely different way. Body Dysmorphic
Disorder is a body image disorder characterized by persistent and intrusive preoccupations with
an imagined or slight defect in one s appearance (ADAA, 2014). The impact that advertisements
can have on those suffering from Body Dysmorphic Disorder, can be crucial to their mental
health. These individuals will begin to obsess over changing something about themselves that
may not even be an imperfection about them. But since a model or someone else looks a certain
way and they do not, they will do anything they can to change it, which can be very unhealthy.
Those with Body Dysmorphic Disorder will perform different behaviours to attempt at hiding or
improving their flaws (ADAA, 2014). Some of those who are suffering may even develop an
eating disorder. Upon reflection, I have decided to go into more research on this topic through the
question of: What is Body Dysmorphic Disorder and how have print and television advertisements

The Southern Gothic Is A Subgenre Of Gothic Fiction. The
The Southern Gothic is a subgenre of Gothic fiction. The Southern Gothic is best defined as a story
filled with irony, characters who fit the grotesque factor, social issues, violence, southern settings,
decay, outsiders, Civil War, and even slavery and race. Throughout Modern Southern Fiction, these
factors which create the Southern Gothiccan be found in almost every literary work. In the novel by
Dorothy Allison titled Bastard Out of Carolina which was published in 1922, nearly every factor
that plays a role in the Southern Gothic can be found within, specifically the southern setting, social
settings, outsiders, the grotesque, and violence. In Bastard Out of Carolina, the setting in which the
characters reside in is a small town of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
None of them are quite the same, in actuality, they are all quite different from one another, but the
one thing that makes them not outsiders to one another is the idea that all Boatwrights look the
same, that is, not all do, which causes there to be some type of outsider feel to some in the family.
The Boatwrights are looked down upon and it stems from the fact that nobody in the town likes
them. There is a grandmother who curses and chews snuff, there are two crazy aunts who dive
into the theory of witchcraft, there is an aunt who ran off with the carnival, there are uncles who
are beating up men left and right, there is Bone s mother who becomes pregnant at fourteen, and
there is even Bone and a cousin of hers who are quiet and that differentiates them from the rest of
the family. One can argue that Bone s mother, Anney, while unlike the other Boatwrights, meaning
that she is not wild and not running off to beat up whoever gets in her way, is the biggest
outsider in the town and causes the most abject social issues. Due to falling pregnant at the age of
fourteen, Anney was instantly looked down upon. The town saw those who gave birth to bastards
as being the worst of anything, therefore when Anney had to go downtown every year to sign the
paperwork for Bone, those who were in the courthouse looked down upon her, but she did not let
that phase her. She was a Boatwright and she was going to hold her

Compare And Contrast Judaism And Monotheism
Pharisees: spiritual grandparents of rabbinic Judaism. They believed that God controlled all things,
yet decisions made by individuals also contributed to the course of a person s life. Also, they
believed in the resurrection and the award/punishment in the afterlife notion.
Reform Judaism: the more liberal, progressive, modern thinking sect of Jews. The reformers began
by reforming the prayer service to bring it into line with Western sensibilities. They also began to
reexamine the underpinnings of Judaism, the meaning of the Torah, reward and punishment of the
afterlife, the meaning end of time, and the role of Jews in the integrated world. Reform Judaism
wants to more tolerant of non Jewish religions as well.
Monotheism: this means the belief that there is only one God. Monotheism is present within all
three Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam). Monotheism should be a source of
unity for all three of the Abrahamic religions. It should provide an opportunity to unite among all
three religions. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Nature Of Hofstede s Cultural Framework And...
Introduction
This essay is divided into several parts with different objectives. First part discusses the nature of
Hofstede s cultural framework and highlights similarities and differences with GLOBE study.
Second part of the essay equates author s scores for each of Hofstede s cultural dimension with
national benchmark of Lithuania. Last part focuses on potential problems an individual with strong
Australian background might need to deal with while working at company in Shanghai.
Discussion of cultural frameworks
Hofstede defines culture as the collective programming of the mind which distinguishes the
members of one human group from another . (Kirkman, Lowe Gibson, 2006, p. 286). He started his
research in the 1960 s, by examining the concept of culture within one of the largest multinational
companies in the world IBM. Thousands of interviews were held across 66 countries, although
results were only used from only 40. As a result of his investigation, four dimensions of culture were
identified: individualism collectivism, power distance, uncertainty avoidance and masculinity
femininity. Years later Hofstede and Bond added another dimension, long term orientation.
(Hofstede and Bond 1988). First dimension, power distance is defined as the extent of willingness
that societies accept the hierarchical power structure (Morrison 2006). Cultures, which are
considered low power distance, tend to have preferences towards equality and decentralization of

Classical conditioning Classical conditioning is a form of basic learning the body automatically
responds to a stimulus. One stimulus takes on the properties of another. The Russian
physiologist Ivan Pavlov (1849 1936) is credited for discovering the basic principles of classical
conditioning whilst he was studying digestion in dogs. He developed a technique for collecting
dog s salivary secretions. Pavlov (cited in Eysneck M.W 2009) noticed that the dogs would often
start salivating before they were given any food or saw the feeding bucket or even when they heard
the footstep of the laboratory assistant coming to feed them. Quite by accident Pavlov had

Decrypting Politics
Conservatism describes the disposition of people who prefer heavy state intervention in private
life and little or no state invention in the economy. Laura Stoker, a professor at the University of
California, Berkeley, created a graph (Figure 1) that separates people s political standing based on
their views of state intervention in private life and the economy (The Charles and Louise Travers
Department of Political Science University of California, Berkeley). This description allows
individuals to compare and contrast the different political views of people. However, there is more

There is not a specific enterprise faction within the conservative movement, but this exemplifies
how there is not perfect harmony. More accurately, Lichtman is revealing how the conservative
movement, through the joining of the knowledge, influence, and resources from the businesses that
invest themselves in the movement, works with the religious side s passion to form a workable base.
The first faction of the conservative movement we will analyze is the traditionalist faction. Dunn
views the traditionalists as the original leaders of the modern conservative movement. He states
they provided intellectual leadership spanning many years. This faction was horrified about the
projects to expand government, such as the New Deal and the Great Society. Looking to foreign
affairs, they were against the threat of communism (Dunn, vii). James Ceaser includes that
presently traditionalists have become defenders of the culture (Dunn, 23). Ceaser believes they
prefer change that comes naturally rather than change that is created and forced. In this way they
aim to conserve by keeping more of a status quo or what gradually evolves in politics from
situations. This seems to reveal the current situation in which a dramatic change in health care was
forced upon the American people, for disapproval continues to be greater than approval (Rasmussen
Reports, LLC). This is an example of an unnatural event that

The war was fought from 1922 1926 between the republic of australia (Republicans) and the
Queensland Republic (Queenies). The war was caused when Queensland, largely the east part of
Australia, seceded from the newly declared Republic Australia. This created a feeling of
superiority from Queensland to the western counterparts. After western australians were elected
into office, this led to the succession. Although the war was fought in superiority, aboriginal
equality was a vital part of the war. Australia used the apartheid system for years before General
Rainford declared the Aboriginal Edict during the war. This made Rainford highly unpopular in
the east. During the war, Rainford stepped forward, asking to create a truce. The Queensland
officials refused to go to Perth, the new capital, for the convention, which led to Rainford
traveling to Brisbane. Once reaching Brisbane, the Queensland officials refused to sit at a table
with the aboriginals until it was promised that no body parts would touch the table. The officials
continued to treat the aboriginals with disrespect, even going as far to call the aboriginals savages,
which angered Rainford. Before leaving, he called the officials fat cats and stormed out. On August
seventh, the Queensland army of four thousand bombed the republican of one thousand four
hundred at Fort Lasseter. Queensland walked from the war victorious on August tenth. By then,
the new Republic of Queensland s flag was flying proudly above the fort. General Patrick
Cowpens and Howard Newfield both failed attempts to take back Brisbane. Grant Odyssey

The Modern City of Paris
In this essay, I intend to look at Question 1, The Modern City 1, Paris. I have decided to choose
and examine Maison de Verre (1928 32) by architect, Pierre Chareau which is situated in Rue
Saint Guillaume, Paris. Maison de Verre, also known as House of Glass was built in the era of
Modern Movement and of course, it somehow has a strong relation with the early modernist
issues materially, structurally and spatially. I will first explore how the house relates to the
industrialisation issue in general but to be specific how Chareau s interest and decision to use
certain materials like steel really brought forward the sense of the industrial design of the house.
Then, I will talk about the relation of the house with the issue of mechanisation and how successful
Chareau was in portraying a set of machines to live in with amazing planning since the very
beginning. His concept of mobility in most of the mechanical designs really captured my interest.
Last but not least, I will discuss the issue of hygienein this house as I think that it is somehow a
response to the spread of diseases in the twentieth century and people started to think more about
the idea of cleanliness. At the end of this essay, I will conclude it with a summary of the three
modernist issues which will be discussed later and the influence of Maison de Verre on the
following architects generation.
As mentioned earlier, industrialisation is one of the early modernist issues which relates

Slavery came about in America in 1619 (RN). It lasted through the American Revolution, even
after Thomas Jefferson scripted his famous lines in the Declaration of Independence, All men are
created equal. They are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights. That among these
are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Clearly, slaves were not part of this included in

This led to conflict after the Mexican War in which America gained new territories in the West.
This aborted the Missouri Compromise which was probably the most promising compared to the
Compromise of 1850. Had the compromise been applied to all American lands then perhaps it
could have succeeded. Instead, the Missouri Compromise failed and only led to further conflict
between the north and south in the future. Maine became a state in 1820 and Missouri followed
the next year in 1821 (PP). For the next 15 years no states entered the Union (RN). From 1836 to
1850 six states were admitted: Arkansas (1836) as a slave state, Michigan (1837) as a free state,
Florida (1845) as a slave state, Texas as a slave state in1845 slave, Iowa in 1846 as a free state and
Wisconsin in 1848 as a free state (RN). Nevertheless, the Compromise of 1820 lasted for over thirty
years until the Kansas Nebraska Act of 1854 determined that new states north of the boundary
deserved to be able to exercise their sovereignty in favor of slavery if they so choose (RN). Once

Essay about Evil Villains in Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen
Evil Villains in Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen
In Jane Austen s, Northanger Abbey, John Thorpe and General Tilney are portrayed as unpleasant
villains. Villains are defined as, a wicked or evil person; a scoundrel (The American Heritage

power hungry, easily upset, and manipulative follows this definition. She introduces both characters

Catherine feels obligated to stay in the house and await Henry Tilney and Eleanor Tilney. In his

Her unique poem lays down a line of different instances of courage throughout, and describes
courage in a way never thought of before. Sexton elaborately states in lines 20 and 21 of her
poem, Your courage was a small coal that you kept swallowing. She s explaining in this quote
that courage has always been inside everyone, and when everyone is little, they bury it down
and don t let it breach the surface. However, as humans grow and experience, they become more

poem Courage, Courage is not your strength, but the ungiven fighting part of you. Brilliantly
states by Karsh, courage is the driving force within all humans, capable of great things.
Moreover, Sexton portrays this message thoroughly within her poem. Within Brooks Explorer,
she encourages the message to never hold back on making choices. Within her poem, a man is

This paper will provide the behavioral definition of punishment and give examples of both positive

The mere mention of the word punishment as in the origin of the word make most people think of
causing pain when in fact negative punishment is very different from corporal punishment.
Corporal punishment is the use of physical force with the intention of causing a child to experience
pain but not injury for the purposes of correction or control of the child s behavior (Gershoff,
2002). Behavior change strategies based on negative punishment involve taking away a desirable
stimulus after a behavior occurs.
Punishment has occurred when a response is followed immediately by a stimulus change to
decrease the future frequency of the behavior. Positive punishment aids in the decrease in the
problem behavior. Reprimand is one of the most common forms of positive punishments. A firm No
or Stop delivered immediately on the occurrence of an undesirable behavior will significantly
reduce the chance of the behavior being repeated in the future.
Verbal praise is a form of positive punishment. In a study using 2 ВЅ to 7 year olds praise was used
to reward compliance by the parents in the home (Owen, 2012). Parent training on elements of
praise and positive attention was conducted at the onset of the study. The setting of this study was
conducted in the home setting for handling noncompliance. The methods of punishment explored
for this study were the effects of parental praise, positive nonverbal responses, reprimand, and
negative nonverbal responses.

Analysis Of The Glass Castle By Jeannette Walls
As frigid snow frosts the sun licked ice, a glacial wind howls against the trees. As a child, one
would sip hot chocolate and watch a movie with their family. However, Jeannette Walls would be
sitting on a dirty floor, cold with no food. In The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, it is revealed that
as Jeannette grew up, she endured hardships inflicted upon her by her own parents. However, if
Jeannette had not gone through these things, she never would have gained the characteristics that
she values present day. Although Jeannette Walls faced destitution and endured anguish during her
childhood, these obstacles formed her into a self reliant woman who proves that just because she
did not have as much money as other families, she can still achieve success in her life.
Throughout her life, starting from childhood, Jeannette Walls suffered through multiple hardships
that could lead her away from a successful adult life. Since she was young, her parents put her
through things that a child should never be exposed to, which could lead her to make these same
mistakes as she grew older. For example, her father was an alcoholic, and from this many problems
sprouted. Furthermore, her mother never wanted to be tied down, and loathed the idea of family
life, as she did not want the responsibility of raising a family. Rose Mary was depicted as self
centered in the novel, and did not think of her children, as she only thought of her own needs. This
can be shown when she keeps the diamond ring her children found for herself. Instead of thinking
of her starving children, she states that, self esteem is even more vital than food (Walls 186). In this
moment, Rose Mary shows that she is not thinking of her children and what they need to survive,
but only cares about herself and what she has. Under these circumstances, any other parent would
use the ring to buy food for their children, but instead she shows her inconsiderate nature by
keeping the ring for herself. Another example of an event that could scar Jeannette far into her life
would be when her father brought her to a bar and allowed a strange drunk man to take Jeannette to
his apartment. When she told her father that she had almost been raped, he does not listen to

My Life In New York City
I was born and raised in New York. I lived most of my life on Long Island in a town called North

Everyone did. You were lucky to find a seat. Getting back to suburbia was nice and peaceful after

as many trees as there are here and there are no farms. Trees are planted sparsely down the streets
so that each block may have four or five constructed by the town in designated spots. We did

lawn was. There are no lawns in Queens. I lived in Queens until my Mother got remarried. We

very serious. Blizzards are a big thing with sometimes many feet of snow. I can remember having

economics this is called a substitute good, in a relationship this is called a rebound, and in
Freudian terms, this is called displacement. In the movie, girl with a pearl earring, Greit creates a
chain of displacement, when she displaces her fathers love onto Vermeer and then her attraction
to Vermeer onto Pieter. The initiating event in TGWTPE is the moment Greit s father goes
blind due to a work accident. Greit s father is a very important figure to her. Greit often carried
around a memoir of her father, a tile he had made specifically for her. As she leaves her home to
go and work for the Vermeer family, it appears that her fathers tile is her only

Being of age often means that a girl is experiencing changes both physically and mentally.
Physically speaking she is growing more and filling out her shape as a woman. Mentally
speaking, Greit is experiencing sexual urges and frustrations. Vermeer and Greit often engaged
with eachother in sexually tense moments. The most notable moments are when Vermeer and
Greit just stare at eachother deeply, not moving, challenging the other to make a move. There
are many occasions where they stare at each other intensely. When Greit is making paints for
Vermeer and he grabs her hands under his, moving them together, she stares directly at him,
unwavering. The physical contact, on top of the very suggestive movement of the hands topped
with the deep stares resonates sexual tension. When Greit is taking off her hair wrap, letting her
hair fall, to find Vermeer staring her down only to stare at her back is an even stronger example.
He s seen her hair in this scene, a symbol of her sexuality, of her femininity, yet when she notices
him staring she doesn t rush to hide it, she stands there and stares back as if to ask, what now.
They both acknowledge and are aware of the tension. Biologically there is nothing holding them
back from each other however; the biggest hurdle of their relationship is social status. Vermeer is
not only a married man, but on a different social level than Greit. His status as a painter of a

Compare and Contrast Buchanan and Monderman’s
Approaches...
Compare and contrast Buchanan and Monderman s approaches to the production of social order in
public spaces.
Public spaces are places which we have to share with others and where apply shared sets of
values or expectations about how people should behave. Social order is very important in social
life. Order is part of the way people practice their social existence. It is about how individuals fit
together with others and with things around them. Ordering is all the time practised by people
and is central to social life. Social order is not easy to make, it involves a lot of things like
practices, making everything and everyone fit together and also having in mind ideas about the
past and the future (Silva, 2009). Social order needs to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The purpose was to design towns in a way that there could be an access for a lot of motor
vehicles and at the same time sufficient level of life in towns (Silva, 2009). In this report
Buchanan s idea was to keep separate working, shopping and leisure form the corridors where the
traffic would move (as cited in Silva, 2009). At this point there was a choice between not
allowing any more cars in towns and just reconstructing them. After the mid 1960s, in towns
started a separation of people from the vehicles. Sometimes it was very strict, when people
where pushed away in residential blocks (Silva, 2009). In Buchanan s Report traffic has a
dynamic role in shaping the way places are designed, the way people live and interact with each
other and also with surroundings. He looks at the traffic as something dangerous and because of
that it needs to be separated and restricted by rules forced through visible displays in space. His
report was accepted by public. Later government commissioned work and its way of road planning
has influenced almost half a century of road design in England. There was a privilege for motor
vehicles and pedestrians with cyclist were marginalised (Silva, 2009).
After years of separating pedestrians from traffic, Monderman s suggested the shared space
philosophy, which was concentrated on different approaches to the public spaces and highways
from Buchanan Report. The aim of Monderman s thesis was to

The Case of Romanian Cigarette Market
CHAPTER VIII. STUDY CASES

minimum tax level of the member states 57% of the most popular cigarettes (MPPC) price, but not

2006 by the OU 33/2006 the government approved the tax level, which will increase gradually
until it reaches the required level. (In 2006, this happened two times, at an approximately two

This means the elimination of the sub medium and medium cigarettes producers and the
consolidation of the position of premium and prestige cigarettes producers. They will share the
remaining market shares, favouring the creation of a symmetrical oligopoly. The computations
demonstrate that the main producers on the market will remain BAT and PM, who s portfolio
mainly consists premium cigarettes and which will distribute the remaining 10% between
themselves after the elimination of the small ones, as well as the 10% lost by their main

By imposing the minimum tax, the base and value cigarettes producers will be forced to choose
between two alternatives equally disadvantageous to them: either they sell at a lower price, and
they lose, or they sell at the minimum price of 2.6 RON, and their sales go down. Due to this,
their autonomy is affected, and also the freedom of trade (art. 9). The consumer has a limited
possibility to choose and is forced to accept a higher price for a base or value product, which
affects his/her welfare. The welfare of the end user is assured by the quantitative,

Success And Its Elements Of Success
Success and its elements As we all fold the page on an academic year, for some of us this might
have been the most important year of our lives. As we end school and prepare our brains for the
next phase, we indulge our thoughts in the prize that everyone dreams of, what some would call
The Pinnacle of Civilization . Our minds drift off thinking of Success, and at that instant we
tremble, panic and curl into the corner, as the shadow of the obstacles that will stand in our path
appears across the horizon. Today, I ll try to help us all by identifying the critical elements behind
success. I am not claiming that I hold the key, but maybe together we can sniff out the truth behind
it.
To start with: Confidence is the belief in your abilities, your capabilities, your attitude and your
Opinion, Freedom of inner doubt and conflict. It is known as the memory of success and the key
to the city of achievements. The positive feeling of one s ability to accomplish any certain or
general activities in life, a belief that one s self and capabilities are equal to most any task.
That might sound a little complicated and threatening. My Mother always tells me: Nobody is
perfect, you re better than nobody, but nobody is better than you. And that is precisely the root of
confidence, the belief that you can achieve anything, the way anybody else can. No matter the
odds, you can do what you want, because you believe you can.
Confidence is the difference between feeling unstoppable and

Similarities Between Greeks And Trojans
Greeks and Trojans
The Iliad is a book full of poems that talk about the history of Trojans and Greeks. Within the
Iliad, there is a strong urge to show a world in which was are tremendous and the gods have
direct hand in human events and these deities influence fate. The two leading gods, Achillies and
Aeneas, the reader can see the ways in which these two cultural problems entwine and try to
create an image of the ancient world which is at once barbarously real in terms of the depiction of
not just the glory, but also the horrors of war which are filled with supernatural and mystical
figures called the gods.
Each of the main characters are selected by the gods in some ways but however gained favor not
only because of who they are and of their birth but also are fated to prove themselves as a true
warrior and to fulfill certain expectations to prove to see if they are worthy or not.
The gods in the Iliad are manifested not just to have a direct hand in the lives of mortals, but
moreover to be picky about whom they would like to help. Greek religion held powers and fears
of all kinds so therefore the reasons behind their motivation and resolutions is not like the
modern Christian notion where they think that whoever deserves to have the honor will be it.
From what I have read to see, its gods were within the world, one that they did not create. Power
such as gods, spirits and nymphs did not die but yet were born. The Greek gods were immortal and

Indentured Servants Essay example
Indentured Servants
Indentured servitude was the institutional arrangement devised to increase labor mobility from
Europe (particularly England) to America, and it was the labor system that preceded American
slavery. Its emergence in Virginia in the seventeenth century can be seen as a development
expedient to the circumstances surrounding the colony. Indentured servitude was practically the
only way in which a poor person could get to the colonies and planters could be supplied with
cheap labor. Richard Frethorne s document written in 1623, The Experiences of an Indentured
Servant, legalized the master servant relationship, specified the kind of labor to be performed, the
length of time to be served, and the dues owed to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Richard Frethorne was a young Englishman who came over to the New World in 1623 as an
indentured servant and settled in Virginia, near the Jamestown colony. His letter provides an
illuminating picture of the hardships of colonization in the early seventeenth century, especially for
the class of indentured servants. Combating homesickness, disease, hunger, discomfort, and
isolation, Frethorne and his fellow settlers struggled to make a success of their fledgling
community. Life in early Virginia was particularly difficult because of the shortage of supplies, the
prevalence of disease, and tense relations with the Native Americans. On March 22, 1622, the
Powhatan chief Opechancanough organized an attack on English settlements across the colony that
killed between three hundred and four hundred people. This attack, ignited by the recent murder of
the great warrior Nemattanew by the English, was intended to curb English expansion into native
lands. As a result, the English abandoned many outlying settlements and moved closer to or into
Jamestown itself, increasing the incidence of disease and death in the overcrowded village. The
English retaliated by destroying Indian crops. Frethorne alludes to this attack, in which eighty
people from his outlying settlement died, and which motivated the fear and harsh policies of the
settlers toward the Indians. Tensions between the two groups escalated over the next decade and
climaxed in another attack by Opechancanough in 1641,

Essay Growing Up, Staying Young
Growing Up, Staying Young
I had trouble sleeping that night. The peaceful, rhythmic breathing of my younger sister across the
room could not calm me as I lay under the covers in the dark, listening for the heavy footsteps of an
elderly man sneaking through the downstairs floor of my house. With one hand firmly choking Red
Blankie, I reached with the other to turn the alarm clock on my bedstand toward me. The
fluorescent red digits whispered 12:03 in the still, black room. Perhaps he will come soon.
Delicate tingles danced up my arms, as I froze like a nervous cat, ears up, ready and alert. I
rehearsed the carefully planned sequence of events in my head. A suspicious and unfamiliar sound

This world is but a canvas to our imagination, wrote Henry David Thoreau. As a young child, I
clung to this inspirational message and ran with it to millions of marvelous places in my mind. I
believed in everything, from my invisible collie Fluffy to Santa Claus, Rudolf, and the rest of the
reindeer. Everything I saw and heard and read sang to me, inspired me, and thrilled me.
When my mom wouldn t let me have a puppy, Fluffy came into my life. She was my imaginary
collie, every bit as real as the dogs I saw climbing against the scratched windows of the mall pet
shops. I took her for walks around my back yard, fed her juicy crimson mulberries from our tree,
and taught her to rescue children from burning buildings, like Lassie did on Nickelodeon. My time
with Fluffy was limited, however, when I found a job in the restaurant business. As the owner,
waiter, and cook, I spent many hours in the red and yellow playhouse in my basement taking orders
from hungry customers and preparing exotic foods for their culinary pleasure.
My best friend Jenny joined me in many of my childhood adventures. After reading Freckle Juice
by Judy Blume in second grade, she and I were convinced we could get rid of her horrible brown
freckles with a fantastic concoction of rainbow colored vitamins, brilliant blue bathroom cleanser,
delightful soap bubbles, hairspray mist, and two tablespoons of mouthwash. Unfortunately, Jenny

Reactivity Of Hcl Acids With Cells Lab Report
Reactivity of the HOCl acids with cells
The reactivity of HOCl has been comprehensively assessed with in a wide range of cellular
systems, including yeast (Carmona Gutierrez et al., 2013) and bacteria (Winterbourne and Kettle,
2013; Winterbourne et al., 2006; Chapman et al., 2002), together with many studies focused on
specific mammalian cell types and tissues. It is clear from the numerous invitro studies that HOCl is
highly reactive and destructive, inducing cell death via both necrotic and programmed apoptotic
pathways, depending on the oxidant concentration and cell type under study.

Perhaps somewhat paradoxically, the continued exposure of macrophages to HOCl has been shown
to exacerbate the inflammatory response in a number of disease settings, which is particularly
relevant with in the progression of atherosclerosis (Daugherty et al., 1994). It has been shown that
exposure of both murine macrophage cell lines and primary cultures of human monocyte
derived macrophages (HMDMs) to physiologically relevant concentrations of HOCl results in
the loss of cell viability. In early studies employing the murine macrophage cell line P388D1
Schraufstätter and co workers (Schraufstätter et al., 1990) demonstrated a dose dependent
increase in the extent of trypan blue uptake by the cells that was concurrent with the increased
presence of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in cellular supernatants. Both of these methods are
indicative of disruption to the cellular membrane and are used extensively as surrogate markers
of cell death. In these studies, it was shown that exposure of cells to HOCl concentrations as low as
25 ВµM decreased cell viability by approximately 20% compared to controls, with 50 ВµM HOCl
causing up to 50% cell death, and complete cell lysis observed after exposure to 75 ВµM HOCl.

Characteristics Of The Chinese Post 90s Generation From...
The paper will focus on the shift in characteristics of the Chinese post 90s generation from elder
generations, particularly the characteristics embedded in the working place.
Unlike the West, where generational cohorts are broader, China s rapid development means each
generation exhibits its own distinct characteristics. Unlike previous generations, the post 90s
generation has enjoyed fruits of rising Chinese economy, as a result of the reform and opening up
of Chinese economy, proliferation of information technology, and remarkable increase in the family
income. These all have fundamental shift of their view of the world, their preference, and their
habits of living.
Difference between the post 90s and their parents generation
Economy
Since the Chinese economic reform beginning in 1978, China has witnessed an economic miracle.
China s annual GDP growth has been around 9.5% 11.5% per year from 1978 to 2013, and GDP
per capita has grown to RMB 41,908 in 2013 from RMB 381 in 1978 (National Bureau of
Statistics of China, 2014). The opening up of Chinese economy to foreign investments, loosening
regulations, and boost of private sectors etc., have all contributed to this economic miracle. China
not only supported the growth of the East Asian Tigers, but also was widely considered as the
world engine thereafter.
The post 90s generation was born amid this rapid economic growth. They had little memory of the
Chinese political turmoil and impoverished past, and live a

Gaining membership to the European Union (EU) has been a frustrating process for Turkey. The
Near East nation began its campaign for EU membership nearly 30 years ago under the EU s
predecessor, the European Economic Community. In 2005, 18 years after beginning the application
process, Turkey was finally invited to enter accession negotiations. The protracted delay was a
result of unfavorable economic conditions in Turkey as well as Turkey s tumultuous relationships
with EU members Greece and Cyprus. Yet, the question remains: why hasn t Turkey been granted
membership to the EU? The answers are many and complex. First, geographically, Turkey is
located between the East and the West, yet only 3% of Turkish territory actually lies within... Show

Presently, corruption is corroding the government and Prime Minister Erdogan s reputation. Last
month, the Turkish government blocked websites such as YouTube and Twitter. Yet, censorship
of social media platforms is but a fraction of the abuses in Turkey a nation where journalists are
routinely arrested and incarcerated for criticizing the party. While the EU is not ready to accept
Turkey, the Turkish public is hesitant to join the EU. Recent polls have shown public frustration
toward the accession movement. Additionally, Turkey has experienced spurts of economic
growth in the last decade thanks to a customs agreement with the EU that has facilitated, among
other things, the development of a sophisticated export trade. Turks might feel that the country
doesn t need the EU to be successful. Prime Minister Erdogan and other top Turkish officials
have recently expressed disdain toward the EU, with one minister even being quoted as saying:
Turkey doesn t need the EU, the EU needs Turkey. If we have to, we could tell them Get lost,
kid! Although Turkey has seen considerable economic growth in recent decades, the economy is
still underdeveloped and could benefit greatly from EU accession. However, the rhetoric of
Turkish leaders indicates a turn away from Europe. It is clear that Turkey s gradual abandonment
of democratic principles is likely to hinder the progress of their EU membership bid. Regardless of
posturing by Turkish leaders, the economic

Many people debated whether Mona Lisa is happy or sad. According to one credible source It is a
visual representation of the idea of happiness suggested by the word gioconda in Italian (The
Mona Lisa, 2011 present, Para. 3), but there are a lot of articles that debate back and forth about
her significant smile. Leonardo Da Vinci uses warm and bright colors to show that Mona is happy
but calm. Mona Lisa is painted with a sitter s chest. Sitters chest is a position that is upright and
proper. The nature of the painting also plays a role in the mood of the painting. Nature can
symbolize many different things. Da Vinci uses it in this painting to give it a positive energy and

My Experience As A Social Work Student At New York University
My Experience as a Social Work Student at New York University Choosing a career is not easy.
I had a lot of people giving me suggestions and advice to choose the right profession. My
psychologist convinced me to pursue my master in social work. During my undergrad I was
interested in psychology, but social workseemed like an easy path to become a therapist. However,
I have learned that social work is not as easy as I thought it would be, and that it is the main key
for many opportunities to succeed and to make the difference.
As a social work student, I have discovered that social work is an overlooked profession. Many
people used to ask me what can you do with a social work degree? when the real question is what
can you not do with a social work degree? Nowadays, we are surrounded by social workers; they
work in the schools, universities, hospitals, courts, prisons, different community based
organizations and more. People also said that social work doesn t pay enough . However, what they
do not know is that every day as a social worker is rewarding; knowing that you have made the
difference in someone s life is priceless.
Both of my internships have helped me to develop and improve my skills as a social worker.
When I first started social work school, I wanted to work exclusively with children and providing
psychotherapy only. My first field supervisor at the Child Center of New York (CCNY) taught me
that in order to work with children, it is essential to start

  • 2. Stop And Frisk Thesis The law of stop and frisk gives police the constitutional right for a brief and limited search of the outer garments for weapons only if they have reasonable suspicion that the person is involved in a crime. My thesis statement is that The enforcement of this law is unfair to black and latino males who seem to make up 90 percent of those stopped by police. I intend to prove this thesis statement by using data, website information, and law books to show that this law is ineffective and only used to racially profile innocent people. Another thing about the stop and frisk this police investigation tool is making people feel like prisoners in their own communities. These larger companies have more resources and a greater presence in the international market. There is also a threat of new entrants, and since UA does not hold patents for its products, new and existing companies may begin to compete for a spot in the performance apparel market. Other threats include the company s limited bargaining power (resulting from their diverse supplier base) and the leverage held by wholesale customers. Fortunately, UA does have the advantage of strong brand recognition, a reputation for innovative and high quality products, and testimonials of world renowned athletes, minimizing the threat of substitute products. Although the company was established more than fifteen years ago, Under Armour, Inc. continues to be in the growth phase of its life cycle. Indeed, the title means a big fuss about a trifle, and by the end, this is exactly what happens. All accusations will come to nothing, causing the play to end the same way as if they never occurred at all. Shakespeare brilliantly plays on the meanings of nothing throughout this play. The word nothing would actually have been pronounced noting in his time. When the prince congratulates Claudio upon Hero s father s approval to marry him he begins to be confused. In fact, it was the Prince wooing Hero for Claudio at the masked ball. Don John lied to Claudio to create a disturbance at the ball. Don John s malevolent plan to ruin Claudio and Hero s wedding was to take effect the night before they were to wed. The malicious Don John constructed, or rather misconstructed, the scheme that insinuated Claudio s belief in Hero s faithlessness. It is Don John who reports to Claudio and Don Pedro that Hero is having an affair, and he who stage manages an elaborate charade featuring his own henchman Borachio and an unwitting stand in for Hero to lend credence to this fiction. Perhaps the most significant thing to be noted in connection with this deception is that the spectator does not witness the crucial scene in which Claudio overhears the counterfeit exchanges between Margaret and Borachio that persuade him of Hero s guilt. We learn of this episode only at second hand, when Borachio boasts of his exploit (Lucking). The spectator of the play watches the Watchman watching Borachio while the latter narrates what he calls his tale relating how Claudio was inveigled into watching an artificial scene enacting Don John s fiction. • 10. Industrialization after the Civil War Industrialization after the Civil War Industrialization during the 1860 s through the 1900 s caused many problems globally. Industrialization changed a lot in the US for Americans because it made it easier for citizens to do labor work, expanded capital for businesses and opened up many job opportunities for people. Although this was beneficial to the Americans it caused other problems to escalate, and caused many people to flee into the cities, as well as caused a differentiation between the rich and the poor. However, after the civil war, industrialization affected the US politically, economically and environmentally way more than them benefitting from it. The negative effect brought political controversy and resulting in riots, poor working conditions, child labor, greed for the rich and immigrants also wanting to work and the positive effect were improving and developing the south. Although, that was beneficial for the people as industries, such as railroads and steel started to culminate throughout the North, there were a greater need for workers (Lyson/Welsh 2005). Not only did Blacks come from the South for jobs but immigrants started to flood the United States from other countries. Because the population grew rapidly in the North, the factories were also over crowded with people including children. • 12. John Collier Civil War Collier (2003) also argues that economic agendas appear to be central to understanding why civil wars start. Civil wars need both motive and opportunity incentives to start conflicts. However he argues that opportunities are more important in explaining conflicts than motives. I think the new trend to focus on the means of financing conflicts, coupled with the failure of rebel groups to articulate and achieve their objectives, have led to a discourse to find rational arguments to dismiss the grievance factor of conflicts as explained by Arowobusoye (2005). I would argue that identity and ethnicity are major factors that are more accurate than the wareconomies in the instigation of civil wars. Collier (2003) used a causal effect approach ... He also pointed out petit criminals as beneficiaries of war. There is likely for an increase in criminality, governments reduces expenditure on the police during conflict as they increase spending on the military. As a result, the risks of punishment for criminal behavior decline as explained by Collier. I disagree with this view as it is generalization. Only weak states experience increase in criminality as pointed out by Singer (2003). Collier also pointed out in his analysis that government workers gain during wars because government monopoly of violence becomes duopoly of violence because. This is another generalization which I disagree with, government duopoly of violence only happens in few societies. Moreover Collier didn t give examples of societies or states in which these happened, which made it very difficult to verify. Overall Collier suggested that motives for civil war (grievance) are not adequate explanation for the prediction of the outbreak of civil wars instead opportunity and economic incentives has more explanatory power, justifying this with his causal effect approach to civil ... Karayannakos, The Actors and The Chorus, 2007), the Ancient Greek chorus used a range of vocal techniques and elements, which have influenced and shaped western theatre as it is today (M. Mendenhall, Greek Theatre Influences on Modern Theatre, 2012). From 7th Century BC to 4th Century BC, Greek choruses are particularly renowned for their approach in engaging the audience with the context of a play. (B. These elements make Antigone one of the most tragic plays in Ancient Greek Theatre as multiple deaths of main characters occur within the traditional texts. In order to convey these elements the chorus had a vital role in the process of the play. In Antigone , the chorus at times would directly affect the action on. Antigovernment Statements through Painting While Van Gogh shut himself off from the world first, in rural Provence, and second, in an asylum in Saint Remy, other artists have used their celebrity to draw attention to contemporary political events, and to speak out against, and challenge the establishment. As mentioned above, Warhol had made art from newspaper headlines, thus drawing attention to contemporary politics on race in America. However, among the best known of such anti governmental statements is Picasso s painting Guernica, which represents a passionate attack on Spain s fascist government by the Spanish artist living in Paris. It portrays a scene of the German bombing, in 1937, of Guernica, the Basque capital of Northern Spain, during the Spanish civil war, and became a universal symbol of the atrocity of war. The scene is set within a room where, at an open end on the left, a bull flails its tail as it stands over a woman grieving over the dead child in her arms. The subjects in this painting are shown as innocent and helpless. The centre is occupied by a horse, which falls in agony as it had just been run through by a spear or javelin. The large gaping wound in its side is a major focus of the painting, reinforced by the human skull which overlays the horse s body. On the open palm of the dead soldier in the foreground is a stigmata, a symbol of martyrdom derived from a stigmata of Christ. The author watched the film a few times and read reviews online to learn about the director and main actors and actress that starred in Delicatessen. 2.1 Food is Currency There is no money in this post apocalyptic film so meat, corn, lentils and even sex is used to pay for food. The people are using the barter system to trade by exchange of commodities rather than money. Food was more important than money, you need to eat to survive, and meat is the top commodity. The Kube brothers exchanged 2 bags of corn for nine hundred grams of shoulder meat. And when they argue this Clapet told the brothers you get what you always get. Lentils were seen as nothing as the taximan would not take lentils from Louison for his fair, instead he took his shoes, even though taxi broke down before and Louison had pushed the car for miles. 2.2 Troglodytes If you live underground you are regarded as being deliberately ignorant or old fashioned or even a hermit why would anyone want to live underground. Some people predict that one day GDP of China will exceed GDP of U.S. and that day will come soon. Unquestionably, China is growing rapidly and the Chinese economy is doing well, but does this mean the Chinese citizen is at high utility level? The answer is no. The fact is that most of the Chinese citizens today are facing the problem of unbalanced income and prices, which means the living costs are too high while the salary rate is relatively low. Besides, China is developing rapidly these years, Chinese people are demanding a better life which they want to eat better food, have a better education, and live in a better house. Therefore, people in China today are confronting the problem. Why is this problem occurring? Other than the high population rate of China, there are few more reasons: 1) high taxrate, which cause high living expenses; 2) low social benefits, which mainly embodied in high medical expenses; 3) unaffordable housing price, which some people cannot even afford a house with mortgage, other people can only barely afford it but with overload pressure; 4) low salary rate due to variety reasons; and 5) export too much products to U.S. causes inflation which decreases RMB purchasing power, thus, prices for goods and services in the market increasing and people can buy less with their salary. Sure enough, this is the scene when the first German bombs are dropped in Warsaw 1939. From here on up until the turning point of the film the lighting is very dark. I think that this is very important, as Polanski has done this in order to exaggerate and evoke emotion within the audience. Another symbolic scene is when Szpilman is hiding in an old abandon building he is approached by a German officer called Wilm Hosenfeld. Hosenfeld orders Szpilman to play the piano, and at this time Hosenfeld s appearance is strong as we see in a close up of Hosenfeld. The room is dark with grey lighting and Szpilman is thin, wearing frayed dark clothing, he has blended in with the lighting and background. But as Szpilman begins to play the piano, a veil of light shines on him. The veil of light then shifts onto Szpilman which portrays him metaphorically as an angel, conveying that he is in a position of power, rather than Hosenfeld, who previously was. This scene in particular with the light on Szpilman is a significant point in the film because it is the turning point. Szpilman is weak, thin and the lighting leading up to this scene is dark, then after this scene the lighting begins to brighten as well as Szpilman s life. Advertisements, such as clothing advertisements, involve lots of touch ups on the model, making what the world sees, a fake reality of what human body look like. For some of the North American population, these advertisements do not affect them; they will look at the body of the model and not think much of it. But for those who suffer from Body Dysmorphic Disorder, this will affect them in a completely different way. Body Dysmorphic Disorder is a body image disorder characterized by persistent and intrusive preoccupations with an imagined or slight defect in one s appearance (ADAA, 2014). The impact that advertisements can have on those suffering from Body Dysmorphic Disorder, can be crucial to their mental health. These individuals will begin to obsess over changing something about themselves that may not even be an imperfection about them. But since a model or someone else looks a certain way and they do not, they will do anything they can to change it, which can be very unhealthy. Those with Body Dysmorphic Disorder will perform different behaviours to attempt at hiding or improving their flaws (ADAA, 2014). Some of those who are suffering may even develop an eating disorder. The Boatwrights are looked down upon and it stems from the fact that nobody in the town likes them. The first faction of the conservative movement we will analyze is the traditionalist faction. Dunn views the traditionalists as the original leaders of the modern conservative movement. The war was caused when Queensland, largely the east part of Australia, seceded from the newly declared Republic Australia. This created a feeling of superiority from Queensland to the western counterparts. After western australians were elected into office, this led to the succession. Although the war was fought in superiority, aboriginal equality was a vital part of the war. Australia used the apartheid system for years before General Rainford declared the Aboriginal Edict during the war. This made Rainford highly unpopular in the east. During the war, Rainford stepped forward, asking to create a truce. The Queensland officials refused to go to Perth, the new capital, for the convention, which led to Rainford traveling to Brisbane. Maison de Verre, also known as House of Glass was built in the era of Modern Movement and of course, it somehow has a strong relation with the early modernist issues materially, structurally and spatially. I will first explore how the house relates to the industrialisation issue in general but to be specific how Chareau s interest and decision to use certain materials like steel really brought forward the sense of the industrial design of the house. Then, I will talk about the relation of the house with the issue of mechanisation and how successful Chareau was in portraying a set of machines to live in with amazing planning since the very beginning. His concept of mobility in most of the mechanical designs really captured my interest. Last but not least, I will discuss the issue of hygienein this house as I think that it is somehow a response to the spread of diseases in the twentieth century and people started to think more about the idea of cleanliness. Unexpectedly, Isabella Thorpe, John Thorpe, and James Morland arrive at her house. They request that Catherine go along on their trip to neighboring cites. Corporal punishment is the use of physical force with the intention of causing a child to experience pain but not injury for the purposes of correction or control of the child s behavior (Gershoff, 2002). Behavior change strategies based on negative punishment involve taking away a desirable stimulus after a behavior occurs. Punishment has occurred when a response is followed immediately by a stimulus change to decrease the future frequency of the behavior. Positive punishment aids in the decrease in the problem behavior. Reprimand is one of the most common forms of positive punishments. As a child, one would sip hot chocolate and watch a movie with their family. However, Jeannette Walls would be sitting on a dirty floor, cold with no food. In The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, it is revealed that as Jeannette grew up, she endured hardships inflicted upon her by her own parents. However, if Jeannette had not gone through these things, she never would have gained the characteristics that she values present day. Although Jeannette Walls faced destitution and endured anguish during her childhood, these obstacles formed her into a self reliant woman who proves that just because she did not have as much money as other families, she can still achieve success in her life. Throughout her life, starting from childhood, Jeannette Walls suffered through multiple hardships that could lead her away from a successful adult life. Since she was young, her parents put her through things that a child should never be exposed to, which could lead her to make these same mistakes as she grew older. For example, her father was an alcoholic, and from this many problems sprouted. Furthermore, her mother never wanted to be tied down, and loathed the idea of family life, as she did not want the responsibility of raising a family. Rose Mary was depicted as self centered in the novel, and did not think of her children, as she only thought of her own needs. This can be shown when she keeps the diamond ring her children found for herself. Instead of thinking of her starving children, she states that, self esteem is even more vital than food (Walls 186). In this moment, Rose Mary shows that she is not thinking of her children and what they need to survive, but only cares about herself and what she has. Under these circumstances, any other parent would use the ring to buy food for their children, but instead she shows her inconsiderate nature by keeping the ring for herself. Another example of an event that could scar Jeannette far into her life would be when her father brought her to a bar and allowed a strange drunk man to take Jeannette to his apartment. Combating homesickness, disease, hunger, discomfort, and isolation, Frethorne and his fellow settlers struggled to make a success of their fledgling community. Life in early Virginia was particularly difficult because of the shortage of supplies, the prevalence of disease, and tense relations with the Native Americans. On March 22, 1622, the Powhatan chief Opechancanough organized an attack on English settlements across the colony that killed between three hundred and four hundred people. This attack, ignited by the recent murder of the great warrior Nemattanew by the English, was intended to curb English expansion into native lands. As a result, the English abandoned many outlying settlements and moved closer to or into Jamestown itself, increasing the incidence of disease and death in the overcrowded village. The English retaliated by destroying Indian crops. In 2005, 18 years after beginning the application process, Turkey was finally invited to enter accession negotiations. The protracted delay was a result of unfavorable economic conditions in Turkey as well as Turkey s tumultuous relationships with EU members Greece and Cyprus. Yet, censorship of social media platforms is but a fraction of the abuses in Turkey a nation where journalists are routinely arrested and incarcerated for criticizing the party. While the EU is not ready to accept Turkey, the Turkish public is hesitant to join the EU. Recent polls have shown public frustration toward the accession movement. Additionally, Turkey has experienced spurts of economic growth in the last decade thanks to a customs agreement with the EU that has facilitated, among other things, the development of a sophisticated export trade. Turks might feel that the country doesn t need the EU to be successful. Prime Minister Erdogan and other top Turkish officials have recently expressed disdain toward the EU, with one minister even being quoted as saying: Turkey doesn t need the EU, the EU needs Turkey. If we have to, we could tell them Get lost, kid! Although Turkey has seen considerable economic growth in recent decades, the economy is still underdeveloped and could benefit greatly from EU accession. However, the rhetoric of Turkish leaders indicates a turn away from Europe. It is clear that Turkey s gradual abandonment of democratic principles is likely to hinder the progress of their EU membership bid. Regardless of posturing by Turkish leaders, the economic ...
