The Rise and Fall of Alexandria Essay
A Literature Review of The Rise and Fall of Alexandria
Book Review of The Rise and Fall of Alexandria How the modern world was actually established is
often overlooked and attributed to the powers and domination of Athens and Rome. What authors
Justin Pollard and Howard Reid urge readers to understand, however, is the significance that the city
of Alexandria had on Western Civilization. Both authors have worked in British and American
television, and are accomplished in the film/documentary industry. Reid has also previously written
five other books. In their narrative book, The Rise and Fall of Alexandria, they seek to emphasize
just how important this little city was to the foundation of the modern world through accounts of ...

7). He wanted Egypt as part of his growing empire. Not long after in 323 BC, however, Alexander
died and left this newly established city to his half brother and baby son. Alexander s childhood
friend, Ptolemy, soon came to rule over the city and Alexandria began rising. Ptolemy had plans
for the city and began building innovative roads and two sea harbors. With these new
developments, authors note, the fundamental plan of the greatest city in the ancient world was
complete. Houses, slaves, cattle, and taxpayers were being taken from surrounding villages and
given to the capital city of Alexandria. When Ptolemy s son and successor (Ptolemy II) began his
rule on the city, he, too, threw himself into developing Alexandria and created a currency that could
be used to sell and trade. Structures were built, such as temples and the lighthouse, and Alexandria
was becoming known as the light of the world (p. 92).
Along with the furthering of physical growth to the city of Alexandria, there was also growth
politically and religiously. Ptolemy wished to fuse ancient thinking with the modern thinking of
the Greeks, so he devised a plan and created a cult through a fusion of two gods: the god of the
dead and the living bull. And this Greco Egyptian cult was created and called Serapis. Through this
newly founded religion and the constant furthering of the city s buildings and technology,
Alexandria began to rise.

The Importance Of Attending An Aa Meeting
Attending an AA meeting was a very different experience for myself, I had herd of these
meetings through family but had never gone so it was a little scary for me to attend. I was not
sure on what to really expect when going or what I would get of out attending the meeting, but I
was ready. The meeting was over all very interesting and eye opening on how alcoholism occurs
differently for every person. I felt like this meeting was just an overview of what alcoholism
really is, what it can do to you, and how it affects everyone around you. I learned a lot from
attending this meeting and realized what it takes for someone to attend an AA meeting and to
come to peace with their problem. I was very nervous about attending an AA meeting alone, I
had never been to one and I surely didn t not want to go alone. I remembered a close cousin of
mind attended AA meetings frequently, so I asked her if she wouldn t mind going to one with
me. I attended the Beginners and Slippers meeting at the Western Club. My first thought on this
meeting was that there were going to be a lot of people that are just beginning their journey to
recovery. It was very intimidating to attend the AA meeting simply because I felt out of place,
like I shouldn t be there. Once we had arrived to the meeting, everyone seemed so friendly and
just like ordinary people. Everyone greeted one another and seemed so nice. There were
individuals there from higher class to lower class and they looked perfectly find to me,

Discussion Research On Parent Involvement Essay
Prior Research on Parent Involvement in Education
Before turning to our qualitative study of parent involvement in urban char
ter schools, the following sections outline the prior research on the benefits of parent involvement,
the barriers to involvement that exist, and the potential of the charter school context to reduce these
barriers.
Benefits of Parent Involvement
Decades of research point to the numerous benefits of parent involvement in education for not only
students but also for the parents involved, the school, and the wider community (Barnard, 2004;
Epstein, 2001; Fan Chen, 2001;
Henderson Mapp, 2002; Jeynes, 2003, 2007; Lee Bowen, 2006). De
spite the challenges in establishing a causal link between parent involvement and student
achievement, studies utilizing large databases have shown positive and significant effects of parent
involvement on both academic and behavioral outcomes (Fan Chen, 2001; Jeynes, 2003, 2007). For
example, research has found that parent involvement is related to a host of student achievement indi
cators, including better grades, attendance, attitudes, expectations, homework completion, and state
test results (Astone McLanahan, 1991; Cancio, West,
Young, 2004; Dearing, McCartney, Weiss, Kreider, Simpkins, 2004; Gut
man Midgley, 2000; Izzo, Weissberg, Kasprow, Fendrich, 1999; Senechal
LeFevre, 2002; Sheldon, 2003). Additional academic outcomes such as lower dropout rates

The Peloponnesian war which was fought in 431 404 BCE happened in ancient Greece and was
between two city states, Athens and Sparta. Athens had an alliance with coastal states and most of
the island states that boarded the shores of the Aegean Sea to the north and eastern side. Sparta, on
the other hand, had formed an alliance with all other independent states that formed central Greece
and Corinth, Sparta leading the alliance. Athens navy was strong and also Sparta s army was
equally strong. The advantage of Athens was that it was financially stable and very well prepared

make agreements with the Spartans who were scared of his powerful ruling. He even caused the
Spartans to destroy the fields of the Athenians after asking the citizens of Attica to move inside the
city. This allowed the Spartan soldiers to invade the Athenians fields of produce and the economy
of Athens declined. Pericles also brought the downfall of Athens when he became emotional for the
death of his sons and found that leading the battles against the Spartans was no longer important
and he became weak. The Spartans dominated and the powerful ruler died and this brought a great
disaster to Athens and its citizens as stated by the great historian of the time by the name

Analysis Of Matthew Carter s Works
Letters; they don t just make up the words on a page or a screen. Forms, counterforms and
volumes of shape that interact with other characters and space are important considerations in a
character. Matthew Carter took the in depth knowledge he gained of the physical forms of letters
and transcribed new and ever lasting typefaces from it to become one of the most impactful
typography designers of current times.
From the Beginning Born in 1937 in London, Carter grew up with an expanded knowledge of
typography. His father, Harry, worked in the same field, designing books and type. He was also a
type founding and punchcutting historian. Upon leaving school, he worked in the Netherlands at

This style was not readily available, nor exploited much in Britain. He created several typefaces,
including one used in the Heathrow Airport terminal. Carter moved back to New York after his
years of freelancing in Europe and worked for Mergenthaler Linotype, where he created Snell
Roundhand, a script that perfectly illustrated the comparative virtues of photosetting (Design
Museum 1), as well as Helvetica Condensed and various foreign typefaces. By the 1970s, he was
back in London, still working with Linotype but also freelancing. In 1974 he created Bell
Centennial (Figure 1) for AT T which is still used in telephone directories today. After years of
freelance work, Carter eventually moved back to the United States and established his own
company, Bitstream, in Massachusetts. When traditional typesetting became less profitable and the
digital age set it, Bitstream created a collection of digital typefaces. A decade after its creation,
Carter left Bitstream to pursue more design work.
The Phone Book Bell Centennial was the first digital typeface design that Matthew Carter worked
on in 1974. Originally, AT T had wanted to use Helvetica. Erik Spiekermann notes that Helvetica is
meant to be consistent and homogeneous. The letters are all similar to one another. In his TED talk,
Carter mentions the constraints a designer has to conform to at times, unlike fine art. This is a

Judith With The Head Of Holofernes
As artistic movements sweep certain time periods, location is an important factor in the
development of an artist s vision. While Europe is a compact continent, it s artistic productions can
be largely influenced by the country of origin. This can be seen in multiple artistic movements such
as the Renaissance where works from Italyand England while largely influenced by the same
artistic goals produce works with stylistic differences. Baroquestyle art was also subject to these
geographical differences influencing the vision of the artist. Understanding the complex layers of
an artistic movement requires one to analysis works of art and how they compare to other pieces
produced during the same time. By taking two works with the same subject matter, one can
effectively dissect the influences that time and place have had on the artist s execution. In 1530
Germany, Lucas Cranach the Elderproduced a painting titled Judith with the Head of Holofernes
depicting the biblical heroine Judith with the severed head of Holofernes. A little more than a
hundred years later in 1640 Italy, Massimo Stanzione created a similar representation of this story
in his work, Judith with the Head of Holofernes. Both artist took the same biblical story but
produced two individual works invoking different effects one through Baroque style and the other a
Renaissance interpuation.
The heroine of this story is Judith, a Jewish girl who slayed the Assyrian general, Holofernes,

reading them. Author, E.E. Cummings, was a painter and a poet who lived in Cambridge,

This essay will be discussing how E.E Cummings used visual techniques, sound effects, and details

Probably because of his painting background, E.E Cummings used several visual techniques in
his work. For instance, he shaped the words on the page to represent the object in the poem. A
perfect example of this is in E.E Cummings poem l(a . (Doc A) In it, he talked about the first

The Benefits Of Lily s Special Needs In Public Schools
Lily s parents can argue that the public school should meet Lily s special needs, set up
appropriate goals, and be placed in an inclusive classroom. Also, they should be notified the reason
of the school s decisions. Firstly, the purpose of IDEA is to to ensure that all children with
disabilities have available to them a free appropriate public educationthat emphasizes special
educationand related services designed to meet their unique needs and prepare them for further
education, employment, and independent living (The Individuals with Disabilities Education
Improvement Act of 2004, 2008). It emphasizes that a free appropriate public education need to
both meet children s unique needs and enable children with disabilities to be prepared for further
education. However, the public school does not try to meet Lily s needs that she often needs
instructions broken down into chunks and given individually because she gets easily overwhelmed
by sensory input, but has learned many coping strategies for this with support, and her sensory
challenges sometimes distract her from what is happening in the class. Furthermore, in the grade
three the majority of the goals already been mastered by Lily with her private tutor and second
grade teacher, which means that the school district set up no challenging goal for Lily to enable her
to have further education and did not meet the requirement that IDEA should prepare children with
disabilities for further education, employment, and

Essay on Hypochondriasis as A Mental Disorder
Hypochondriasis as A Mental Disorder
Headache = Tumor. Cough = Tuberculosis. Mole = Skin Cancer. Such is the thought process of a
hypochodriac. As defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual IV (DSM IV), hypochondriasis
is an unrealistic interpretation of one s bodily sensations as abnormal, leading to the fear and belief
that one has a serious disease (1). This preoccupation with having a serious medical condition is
one of the somatoform disorders and may be considered more as a symptom than a disease. In fact,
hypochondriacal symptoms often appear as a part of other mental disorders, including forms of
depression or schizophrenia (2). For this reason, a close investigation of hypochondriacal behavior
is necessary to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With numbers such as these, the issue of understanding more about these symptoms has become
important within the medical world. These pursuits have resulted in four etiologic theories
regarding hypochondriasis, a combination of which could hold the answers to this disorder.
The first of these theories relates to the amplification of normal bodily sensations, or when
individuals ...attribute pathologic meanings to normal somatic sensations and functions. An
example of this would be to attribute swollen lymph nodes to a malignant disease, as opposed to a
simple viral infection. The consequences mostly affect the individual s psychological and
behavioral well being, which leads to the focus of the second theory. Based on Freud s
psychodynamic hypotheses, there is a belief that unconscious conflicts are the result of traumatic or
frustrating childhood experiences being reawakened in adult life by similar stress or frustration.
Consequently, particularly high stress/tension situations could arouse subconscious feelings of
guilt, anxiety, and fear for a person, and their inability to express these emotions verbally may lead
to physical manifestations of conflict.
The remaining two theories take a more behavioral oriented approach. The third

Bartleby The Scrivener Marxist Analysis
Bartleby the Scrivener, a title for a story, and for a man. Bartleby worked in a monotonous job,
doing the same boring thing everyday, and yet he seemed to be fully devoted to his work. His
boss was not a hard man, but it is safe to say that he benefitted from Bartleby, at least, at first.
Because of the devotion that Bartleby gave to his job and his boss, the business worked. This was
not just the job of a scrivener, but instead a representation of everyone working under the heal of
the rich. Bartleby was a simple man in the beginning, he was the average worker. He was boring,
hard working, followed the flow of society. Bartleby would soon change everything anyone knew

He simply refuses to do additional work, then his work at all. It escalates to where he will not
talk, or even leave the premises. He manages to follow his boss and haunt him throughout the
story. No matter how hard the boss tries, he can not get rid of Bartleby. When the revolution
begins, there is no stopping it. The rich will not be able to bribe there way out of this problem. It
will snowball and grow to be a bigger and bigger problem for those at the top of the economic
latter. The boss will never be able to forget poor and suffering Bartleby. Never again will the boss
be able to bush off the images of the poor and suffering, and instead he will be haunted by them.
Bartleby may not even be there, maybe he really did leave when first asked. It does not really
matter, all that is important is that the boss can not forget Bartleby whether he is there or not.
Bartleby seems to be the one being tortured in the story, nobody said the revolution would be
easy for the poor. However, the key is that while Bartleby may be depressed, he had a great effect
on his boss, torturing his mind. This is what the revolution will look like, the rich and powerful
will become crippled by the thought and actions of the poor. They will quickly realize that they
will never be able to get back to the way they were. Things will change at the hand of the rich
from the poor, and it will only take one small spark,

The Structure And Support System Of A Person s Financial...
Banks are the structure and support system of a person s financial state. People rely on banks to
keep their money safe. Choosing a bank is an important decision and there is a lot to account for
when looking to see which one is most beneficial. While there are lots of banks to choose from,
Bank of America and PNC are two of the biggest and most commonly known. When it comes down
to which is better, PNC or Bankof America, the obvious answer is PNC.PNC has lower fees,
better benefits, and customers are very highly satisfied. PNC is more cost efficient than Bank of
America. PNC is one of the few banks that allow the option of taking out any amount of money. If
the consumer was to overdraftin a particular account, such as the Virtual Wallet, there is no

amount that was charged in the Virtual Wallet. PNC declares the Overdraft fee to be 4 dollars
per day. PNC s Overdraft balance threshold is 5 dollars, continuous overdraft fee is 7 dollars per
day and as well as the Overdraft Protection Transfer. All other accounts are 10 dollars each. In
contrast, the Standard Overdraft fee for Bank of America is 35 dollars per overdraft charge or for

Summary Of Immigrant Kids By Russel Freedman
Russell Freedman wrote the article immigrant kids to educate people about immigrants and what
their life was like. This story tells what immigrant went through and what they did to get to
America. He has very good technique and shows very good images and great sources. He also
wrote some very shocking and also very surprising facts.
In 1880 immigrant kids traveled from Europe to America. They went to Ellis Island which is in
New York City. When they got Ellis Island hey had to get examinations to check if they have
contagious infections or disease. The would grab their eyelids and pull it up and peer beneath it.
Most of the past but the ones who didn t have to undergo a more thorough medical exam. The
others that pass went to go register where they get a question with an interpreter if they need it.
They asked questions like what is your name or can you write or how much money do you have
with you. Some of them were really flustered and confused they couldn t answer some of the
questions, so they let them rest and try again another time. About one out of five was detained and
held against their will because they couldn t answer some of the questions in the examination.

The Death Of Serial Killers
In recent discussions of serial killers, a controversial issue has been whether they were born
being the killer that they are or if it is impacted by the way that they grew up. On the one hand,
some argue that serial killers are influenced by things in their lives that cause them to become
these guiltless killers. From this perspective, porn and violence in the home are big factors in
what people believe to be influencing these people. On the other hand, however, others argue
that these people are born this way and the way they grow up has no influence. In the words of
Helen Morrison, one of these view s main proponents, No matter what country, ethnicity, race,
socioeconomic background, education, familial background, they are all exactly the same.
According to this view, despite if they are born this way or grew up being influenced by things,
they are all the same. In sum, then, the issue is whether they are born this way or if their lives
are influenced. My own view has not been solidified at the moment. Reading and researching all
this stuff has not yet brought me to my own conclusion which I believed it would do right away.
Though I concede that violence in the home and pornography do influence people in different
ways, I still maintain that a lot of people grow up with these factors and there are plenty of these
people who do not kill anyone and do not have any serial killertendencies. For example, Ted Bundy
s growing up was talked about quite a bit while he was at

stratification of two opposite levels of the social chain in India. To an American reader the

asked by her supervisor, Ian Smart, to drop off a special package at the DNA Laboratories, a
research institute funded by the state. Rather than driving straight to DNA after work, Dawn stops
at a supermarket to pick up a few things she needs at home. After leaving the supermarket and on

She cannot absolve herself of liability, however, since she will still be personally liable for her
tortious act.
FAST AS WE CAN DELIVERY LIABILITY
Dawn was, in general, acting on behalf of her employer when the accident occurred. A possible
defense to this would be for her employer to claim Frolic and Detour. Dawn had stopped to do
some shopping before heading to DNA Laboratories. Therefore, Fast as We Can Deliver could
argue that she was furthering her own interests rather than the principals and therefore they should
not be liable. However, courts commonly overlook minor deviations, and thus it is unlikely that this
defense would stand. Also, since she was technically off duty at the time, the courts would likely
find that it falls under the Dual Purpose mission section of negligence (Cheeseman, 2010, p 477).
Meaning that in most jurisdictions the liability would fall on both the principal and the agent if she
injuries someone while on such a mission.
DNA LABORATORIES LIABILITY
The plaintiff in this case is obviously making the claim that DNA Laboratories and Dawn held am
agency relationship. This type of agency would have to be implied, as Dawn and DNA
Laboratories have not communicated to create an express agency contract (Cheeseman, 2010, p.
465). The Superior Court of Massachusetts stated in Bosse vs. Brinker Restaurant Corporation that

field. Accurate documentation not only assures high quality patient care but is our best defense in a
malpractice lawsuit. Avoiding malpractice by proper and complete documentation is about more
than just avoiding a lawsuit making it to court; it is about avoiding the litigation process entirely.
We need to remember that documenting has to be legible, complete, and thoughtful to prevent risks
for litigation. A patient s chart is a medical and legal document.
When documenting, nurses must keep in mind that the information has to be complete, correct, and
timely. Incomplete, misleading or missing documentation create problems when presented as

When possible, you should avoid documenting by exception (a quick method commonly used to
document normal findings that includes defined normals) i.e. a care activity is assumed done
unless charted otherwise (Proactive prevention, 2016), because this can be considered as careless
documentation, leading to unclear communication. We need to remember that documenting has to
be complete and thoughtful to prevent risks for litigation. Again, a patient s chart is a medical and
legal document.
My example of correct documentation that I am going to use today is based on my recent
experience in the CVOU. I took care of one of my nurse s patients through the entire cardiac
procedure. All my interventions were important, so I documented them as soon as they were
done. During post procedure, I had to assess the patient s femoral incision site for bleeding and
swelling or hardening, legs for color and edema, and pedal and popliteal pulses q15 min x4 and
q30 min x2. Although, I was taking care of another patient at the same time, I kept in the back of
my head the need to assess my primary patient during each time frame, and documented my
findings right away, which takes only a minute or two so there was no delay documentation, which
may have led to

The Heart and Blood Circulation Essay
The Heart and Blood Circulation The heart is a four chambered muscular pump around the size of
a fist. It beats about 100,000 times a day pumping around 2,000 gallons of blood through about
100,000 miles of organic tubing.
The heart is a big muscle with four valves connected together to make a two stage pump. The heart
gets its energy by oxidizing blood sugars. This released energy, contracts the heart s many muscle
cells, and the four chambers squeeze blood out into the arteries.
The arteries are thick walled muscular tubes which carry blood away from the heart. The heart has
two sides the left ventricle and the right ventricle. The artery from the right ventricle pumps blood to

The venae cavae collects oxygen depleted blood from the body and routes the blood to the right
atrium in the heart. When the right atrium squeezes, it pushes blood through the tricuspid valve
into the right ventricle. Like the other three heart valves this is a one way valve (blood can only
flow in one direction). When the right ventricle contracts, it pushes blood through the pulmonary
valve and on into the lungs. Because it does not take much pressure to get blood to the lungs and
back, the right side is smaller than the left. The left side has to work harder pumping blood to the
rest of the body. Blood in our arteries is at a high pressure, blood in our veins is at low pressure.
The blood, rich in oxygen, returns from the lungs through the pulmonary veins into the left atrium.
To get all the way round blood has to go through the heart twice and this is why it is called a
double circulation.
Blood contains red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets floating in a liquid called plasma.
The red blood cells contain haemoglobin and carry oxygen. Haemoglobin is a protein which
becomes oxyhaemoglobin in the lungs. The white blood cells fight disease by making antibodies
and fighting germs.
Blood transports these vital materials around the body. Blood plasma contains nutrients, hormones
and waste products. Oxygen is carried

Contemporary Academic Deliberations Of Love s Alchemy By...
Contemporary academic deliberations of Love s Alchemy by John Donne and On My First Son
by Ben Jonson has given rise to one controversial issue: whether love should be labeled as
uncertainty. In fact, some argue that the poem Love s Alchemy expresses the cynical love,
whereas, the poem On My First Son focuses more on pious love. These contrasting views have also
been articulately conveyed through words, such as, Alchemy and Farewell in the individual poetic
works of both Donne and Jonson, respectively, with one conclusion: to alter men by first enticing
them to a fantasy world, wherein they are rendered unstable, and later, compelling them to correct
themselves. Furthermore, though both of these aforementioned poems are about... Show more

In fact, Donne is in a constant quest to find a deeper meaning of love, though he is only met with
disappointments at the end. To elaborate on this point, though Donne concedes that he had once
found love when he mentions, I have loved, and got, and told (line 3), he (Donne) still carries the
disjointed feelings that he got from this love.
Furthermore, Donne utters, Tis not the bodies marry, but the minds, (line 19). Here Donne s
profound connection and obsession with death, and that he is constantly aware of it. The words,
shadow , angelic short scorn are related to the underworld that one may not easily embrace; thus,
causing displeasure. Many who might object to the notion that a woman plays a special role in a
man s life and she has the ability to make her man happy, Donne attacks this very notion as well:
Our ease, our thrift, our honor, and our day, Shall we for this vain bubble s shadow pay? (line13
14). By these verses, Donne implies that though men have to work harder to serve their women, in
return, however, men do not receive the same amount of true love that they deserve; their love
remains unrequited. As a

Review of A Shot in the Light Essay
Review of A Shot in the Light The narrator is a naГѓВЇve person. He believes in the best of people.
It does not even cross his mind that Ray could ever hurt him. He trusts Ray. After only two days
with a person he has never seen before, he trusts him. He gives Ray clothes, money, food and a
reason to believe. He is a salesman with a van and some few things. He is not wealthy. He makes
his living. And though he has not much to give he still gives. Ray is a player. How can he make
the narrator believe in him? What does he do to make it that way? The person we see, shooting

being evil. This is only a single try of evilness against the world of goodness. One little shot
cannot defeat the good. But perhaps the little shot from an evil can defeat the evil? The story is
called A Shot in the Light because it is nothing more than a single try to defeat the good. It is no
big thing. Only a little shot in a world of light. It cannot do any harm. Maybe Ray sees the light
after shooting against it? Maybe the light can defeat the evil inside Ray? Though the narrator
does not know it, the good is looking after him: This light, this power inside me was so strong,
though I had no idea where it came from. [2] All the good in world goes together and helps the
narrator. On that background the first theme is the difference between good and bad. With good
shall bad be defeated. There are too much good in this world to be defeated by evil. The second
theme is to take life for granted. Even the narrator takes his life for granted. He likes his life and his

Weaknesses Of Ford Company
With a swot analysis we can determin the company strength , weaknesses , oppourtunties and
threats .
lets start with the strength of the ford company . the strength comes within the inside of the
company that makes the company a better place . some of the strength the ford company has is
that they have good supplies for making their cars , they are considered as one of big companies
and that requires higher workers who are trained well to do the job in their field . The company has
a famouse brand name that has higher history which helps the company to continue and be great at
what they sell . The other strength is that customer are satisfied with they buy from ford company

The weanknesses for this company are that when they use very good supply in their cars they start
to decide on rising the price and that could have big negative effect on the company because the
customers start feeling pressured by the prices and start not wanting the cars anymore because
they feel that the prices are very high . The other fact is that the company needs to also compit
with the other largest company like toyota and it gets harder for them because as you know now
a days companies try their harder to use non expensive supplies so they can have more customers
and better pricces. Other weaknesses could be that Ford does not have a sense on how to use
their supplies and how to gather their supplies like they dont know how to gather their supplies
with lower prices as other company continue to do so and become a head of the ford company like

KamДЃl al DД«n BehzДЃd (c.1450 c.1535), who served royal princes of Timurid (1370 1507)
and Safavid (1501 1736) dynasties, is one of the famous painters in Islamic world. Historical
records and paintings related to him are so numerous. From the beginning of 20th century, art
historians challenged again and again to define the style of his paintings and to attribute the non
signed works to him. However, the characteristics thought as BihzДЃd style are vague, so the re
examination of his style is needed. In this essay, I would like to re examine what is called

However, this is not true, because as mentioned above, the taste for Chinese landscape motifs was
already seen in the 13th century. It would be more appropriate to see the works of BihzДЃd s
figural paintings rather than landscape paintings to define the BihzДЃd style. According to the one
of the contemporary historical records, BДЃbor nДЃma, BДЃbor wrote BihzДЃd was good at
portraits of beard man. The statement by BДЃbor means people who lived in the same period
thought BihzДЃd s strong point was drawing figures. Figure 1 is the portrait of Dervish, which is
attributed to BihzДЃd. The brush work is similar to the techniques of Chinese nail head rat tail
(й‡ й йј е°ѕin Chinese) (see fig 2). Compared to classical style of Persian painting (see fig 3), the
depiction of hairs, mustaches and beard are so fine. The shadowing and the realistic depiction of
ears, nose and mouth are also rarely seen in the classical Persian painting. The Chinese derived
features of this painting (fig 1) mean, in this period, Persian painters imitated the works of Chinese
paintings. And by doing so, they gradually introduced some traces of Chinese painting techniques
to Persian painting. The influence of Chinese painting had great impact before the Timurid
dynasties, but according Sugimura, Persian painters started to borrowing the physiognomy for the
first time in this period. From his indication and the comparison between BihzДЃd practice drawing
(fig 1) and Chinese painting (fig 2), BihzДЃd style could be defined by the depiction of figures

The passages above are saying essentially the same thing, however, the one published by CNN is

Violence In Frantz Fanon s The Wretched Of The Earth
Frantz Fanon, in his book The Wretched of the Earth, seeks to define violence and its justification
in the context of colonialism. To understand Fanon s justification for violence, it is necessary to
learn how Fanon defines violence. Fanon s definitions of violence range from psychological to
historical to cultural, eventually leading the colonized to redirect this violence to the colonizer as
a cleansing ritual. In The Wretched of the Earth, The first type of violence that Fanon addresses is
physical and bodily harm. Fanon says that, Their first confrontation was colored by violence and
their cohabitation or rather the exploitation of the colonized by the colonizer continued at the point
of the bayonet and under cannon fire (Fannon 2). Immediately, the colonizer begins to imprison the
indigenous people for the colonist s benefit. He then defines ontological and epistemological
violence. Ontological and epistemological violence happens as the colonizer begins to steal the
identity of the people they control. This violence creates the bounds between the colonizer and the
colonized. It traps the indigenous people with slave identities, marking them as natives. Once this
violence occurs, colonizers begin to forget the greater reality of their actions. It becomes a
Manichean paradigm. There is no longer a gray area, just black and white, good and evil. Fanon
even goes so far as writing that Sometimes this Manichaeism reaches its logical conclusion and

Art Comparing
Artists that concentrated on the Baroque style of painting had an uncanny ability to display their
style more so than the artists of the Renaissance era. In respect to their different approach towards
shape, room, and work of art, the differences in their styles resulted in dissimilar descriptions.
Renaissanceand Baroque seem to concentrate towards the treatment of space, appearance, and
color. This uniqueness affects the description of a painting and therefore it cannot be seen. More
so, than in comparing Perugino s Christ delivering the Keys of the Kingdom to St. Peter from the

The Baroque style, used by Caravaggio, was the absolute opposite of any Renaissance painter
that had lived before him and because of this; it was probably the reason why he became the most
radical artist of his time. He deserted the rules that had guided a century of artists before him and
because of his theatrical break in style from the Italian Renaissance; he carefully brings a
completely distinct treatment of narrative. Caravaggio s action of form in his Conversion of St.
Paul is extraordinarily different from Perugino s work of art. One of the choices he decided to
use was instead of outlining Paul and his horse with lines, Caravaggio abandons this unique
style and adds movement by using a painterly style in which he uses paint to create an image and
not rigid outlines. He uses color and value to produce a unique form, causing a sense of
movement in the figures. They are not locked in time like Perugino s figures and express the
exact opposite message of classical, passive figures. These are strong, vibrant, and emotional
figures. Perhaps the emotional aspect of the figures is created by Caravaggio s introduction of
dramatic light and dark effects, termed tenebrism. This technique was a great breakthrough in art,
which added great emotional effects and mystery to the art. Caravaggio doesn t light Paul with a

FIJI Water was singled out as a primary example of water insanity due to the fact that the product
was shipped from a remote island in the South Pacific to its main markets thousands of miles
away. In response to this protest, the company launched a new promotion campaign under a
slogan every drop is green, only to be immediately accused by environmentalist groups of
engaging in greenwashing activities. The claim was also challenged by government watchdogs
in some countries where FIJI Water was sold. At the same time, the company s relationships
with the Fiji government were at the lowest point. The government accused FIJI Water of
transfer price manipulations and seized hundreds of containers carrying FIJI brand water. After
assessing the company s contribution to the Fiji economy, the government tried to impose a

in Fiji to pressure the government to repeal the initial 20 cents a litre tax that would have greatly

The State Council Of The Peoples Republic Of China
The State Council of the Peoples Republic of China violates the Hong Kong Basic Law by
purposefully creating a pro Beijing majority in the Hong Kong Election Committee and thus denies
citizens participation in the election of their Chief Executive. This social injustice forms part of a
larger social justice struggle whereby the autonomy of Hong Kongis slowly being eroded by Central
Government control.
Hong Kong citizens have long been discontent with the Chinese Central Government over
concerns about their long term political freedom. Many believe in the principles set forth by their
British colonisers: capitalism, free trade and freedom of speech. In contrast, China believes in
communism by means of a one party state and censorship. As a result of the huge disparity of
social, economic and political freedoms between Hong Kong and China, Hong Kong citizens have
developed their own sense of national pride, a type of Hong Kong centric identity that celebrates
their autonomy from the Central Government (Leung). Indeed a 2011 poll found that 67% of Hong
Kong citizens considered them Hong Kong people first and Chinese second showing the deep
rootedness of the cultural divide that exists between Hong Kong and China (The University of
Hong Kong).
Meanwhile, the People s Republic of China and its citizens have never accepted Hong Kong as a

Leadership Of The Public Sector
In modern IT market, leadership plays a vital role. However, everyone feels they know leadership,
and everyone can talk about it in detail. Although, leadership is a complicated set of processes that

Therefore, to be able to perform leadership coherently in organizations for hiring, development,

Path Integration for Navigation
Path Integration Forms of spatial sensitivity among organisms are exceedingly wide ranging.
Spatial sensitivity among lower animals has been studied in its role in navigation. Many of these
animals exhibit extraordinary navigational capacities. Amoebae have light sensitivities that lead
them to liquid areas that serve their chemical needs. Crickets locate mates using sound. Path
integration, or dead reckoning, is one of the four types of navigation. I begin by distinguishing the
differences among the four types of navigation. I continue by explaining in more detail the second
type of navigation: path integration. Next I explain why one might think that certain types of path
integration are not representational. Last I show why path integration doesn t depend on perceptual
constancies. Path integration is one of the four types of navigation. The other three are beaconing,
landmark use, and map use. Organism s can travel toward or away from a source of stimulation.
Beaconing, or homing, is an organism s movement toward a target. That movement is in response
to a stimulation that derives from the target s location. Beaconing allows organisms to move in
directions that are favorable to them. For example, salmon travel in the ocean for years. After a
couple years, they return to their home streams in straight a line. This is a result of them responding
to certain hormonal changes. Many organisms use another type of navigation called landmark use.
Landmark use

have access to technology are the richest in the world, and those that do not are stuck in poverty
with no way to improve their economic status. It sounds like the starting lines of a Hollywood
movie but it is a growing issue in America and abroad. The digital divide is the divide or gap
between people who have access to technology and those that do not. The divide is creating
problems for schools who require more and more assignments to be done on a computer. Also,
having the internetis having the power of information and knowledge that not everyone has the
ability to access. Other countries suffer from the digital divide at a staggering percentage
compared to US, UK and Europe. (Crawford) In the United States the ability to get internet
access is usually limited to where you live. There are many homes in the US where there is not
reliable internet access. There are elementary schools that require papers, homework and research
to be done on computers. The students that do not have easy access to a computer will have a
strong disadvantage over those that do. Schools are getting better and more advanced computer
labs but not all students can stay after school to complete their homework, if they are required to
take the bus. In 1995 the Commerce Department published its findings on the digital divide. They
found geographic, economic and racial gaps between

Banning Books Essay
Name

The practice of censorship and banning of books in learning institution has been prevalent mostly
due to the explicit content incorporated in them. However, banning of certain books in pretense to
conceal content perceived inappropriate to impressionable children is an infringement of their right
to access information of their area of choice. While banning some book at times has valid reasons,
it is important to endorse and emphasize that every child has the liberty to select, at their discretion,
which book to read. While it is agreeable that parents and teachers should play a noble role in
regulating books that entail controversial topics as well as educating their children as their primary
guardian, their right does not extend to controlling and monitoring what children read ... Show more

Book censorship and bans only primes to conformity and thus limiting the variety and range of
expression as well as inquiry on which the philosophy depends. Banning and censoring reading
materials is capable of limiting the technological innovations, research as well as creativity. It is
hence the responsibility of the democracy to avail a diversity of views whether popular or
unpopular and else should not coerce the opinions and ideas of some while inhibiting the exertions
of others (Memphis, 1). Rather than banning books content, publishers should rather give complete
connotation to the liberty of reading by providing books capable of enriching the diversity as well
as the quality of knowledge. Reading liberation is of diminutive consequence not unless the reader
obtains materials suiting their purposes. Books should hence not be banned due to diverse peoples
conflicting views either since one is not entitled to agree with what he reads but should rather learn
from it. For instance, history aids students in knowing the events that transpired to shape the world
as it is

Harry Potter and the Phallus Fallacy
An exploration of Freudian and Lacanian Phallus Theory
The phallus has long been represented as a powerful symbol time and time again in culture, pop
culture, society and media. Closely linked to the male biological penis, it is representative of
power as well as a symbol of control and strength. Even popular children s literature revolves
around the phallus in an unconscious way. The phallus works in several ways in these cases;
characters often posses objects representative of the phallus which yield power such as the use of
wands, and many story lines follow characters attempting to seize power and trying to maintain that
power with the fear of power loss constantly looming over them. ... Show more content on

A symbolic version of a phallus, such as a wand, sword or cane, is constructed to represent male
generative powers. The phallus in psychoanalytic theory is represented as the supreme symbol of
masculine power and of feminine lack (Rine 14 15). Feminist theorists constructed the term
phallocentrism in order to denote the pervasive privileging of the masculine within the current
system of signification. (Rine 22 26). Freud did not make a distinction between the penis, as a
biological bodily organ, and the phallus as a signifier of sexual difference. Freud s theory of
psychoanalysis argues that whilst men posses a penis, no one can posses a symbolic phallus
(Homer 56). Lacan, in the essay The Signification of the Phallus argues that the difference
between having and being the phallus is that men are positioned as men as long as they are seen
to have the phallus, whereas women, not having a phallus, are seen to be the phallus (Lacan
1309). To Lacan, the phallus symbolizes both the penis and the clitoris as a signifier but the
phallus is constructed to be a signifier of power and is distinguished between the sexes in terms of
lack (Lacan 1306, Rine 14). Lacan s distinction between the penis and the

My Antonia Research Paper
In my Antonia a bohemian girl named Antonia and her family has just moved to the prairie land
of Black Hawk, Nebraska. At the same time a boy named Jim Burden, whose parents had both
died, was moving to Black Hawk, Nebraska to live with his grandparents. None of Antonia s family
could speak English, so the father, Mr. Shimerda, asks Jim Burden to teach Antonia how to speak
English. Jim begins to give Antonia reading lessons, and eventually Jim and Antonia start to spend
a lot of their time together.
Life is hard for Antonia and her family in this new land. However, Antonia would always be
comforted in forgetting her troubles at home when she spent her time with Jim. Antonia and Jim
spend so much time with each other that they form a

A Social Group
In life, we all play different roles. I am a daughter, niece, friend, student, employee and artist. The
definition of a social group is two or more people who interact on a regular basis in routine ways
and who share a common sense of membership and identity. A social group example would be
classmates in one section of a class and an example of an aggregate would be New Yorkers
riding the subway together. An aggregate is not a group but a collection of people who briefly
share the same physical space but do not see themselves as belonging together. Over the
summer, I auditioned to be part of a theatre company and was asked to join. The name of the
company is called Complete Theatre Company and they do shows and have acting classes three
days a week. I was recently part of their improvisation show Call My Dog . The people in the
class range from ages eighteen to seventy five, normally in the Friday class, they are about 15
people that come, but it depends on the day. It differs week to week. A normal acting class is
formatted by doing physical and vocal warm ups, having a keynote speaker where we talk about
different aspects about the business of acting and then Annie goes around the room and asks us
if we have a scene or a monologue to work on and if we do, we work on them and the class gives
positive feedback. We are a primary group because we are small in number, we interact personally
(we know about each other s personal life) and we show genuine interest and support

U.s. Army National Guard
Given constrained funding and the requirements of short term national military objectives and
longer term operations, the Army should balance the Total Force as follows: first, decrease the
Active Component deployments and increase the Reserve Component, specifically the National
Guard. Second, assign National Guard units to specific regions and/or missions so that their
training can be focused on these conflicts. And third, increase the use of National Guard units to
reduce active component use particularly for low intensity conflict and short term missions.
Background:
Throughout the course of the United States, the Army National Guard (and to some extent, the
United States Army Reserve) has been a bedrock of support to both the President, Congress, and the
Governors of the fifty four states and territories. During times of national emergency, civil
upheaval, natural disasters, and most recently, during times of war, the National Guard has been
counted on to fill capability gaps that exist in the Active Components ranks. In addition, the
National Guard had the additional mission of being at the call of the Governors should they choose
to utilize that resource, a claim the Active Component cannot make (strictly by law). As such, the
National Guard should continue to be utilized as both a resource for governors to use during times
of crisis and, perhaps more importantly, should continue to be used, funded, and trained as an
operational reserve as well. During this

Computer Science Reflection
My undergraduate major is measurement, and I have spent the last three years learning about
optics, mechanics, electric circuits, and coding. Among those courses, and following three years
of training including pieces of research and coursework, I have realized that I am enamored with
coding the most. First of all, I enjoy the process of coding and verifying and adjusting the
program. Taking my digital signal processor coursework as an example, after I finished writing
the code, it appeared that the code might not have been correct because I could not receive the
right temperature. So I set the program to a debug mode and run every single step of my code and
observed the feedback value. This was a very diversion for me. With the criticism comes about
because of single step investigating, I made a couple of theories about the issue, for example, the
time postponed is not sufficiently exact, or I might be coding about the wrong sticks. So I checked
these hypotheses one by one, and for reasons unknown, the issue is the piece of my program
concerning time deferring because the segment I used to quantify temperature which is DS18B20
is extremely strict on timing arrangement. Getting the right outcome is exceptionally fulfilling, so
is the procedure because through speculation autonomously I procure much involvement and
capability. Another thing that intrigues me regarding computer science comes from what I have
learned through our research requirement in theory and technology

The Rise and Fall of Alexandria Essay A Literature Review of The Rise and Fall of Alexandria Book Review of The Rise and Fall of Alexandria How the modern world was actually established is often overlooked and attributed to the powers and domination of Athens and Rome. What authors Justin Pollard and Howard Reid urge readers to understand, however, is the significance that the city of Alexandria had on Western Civilization. Both authors have worked in British and American television, and are accomplished in the film/documentary industry. Reid has also previously written five other books. In their narrative book, The Rise and Fall of Alexandria, they seek to emphasize just how important this little city was to the foundation of the modern world through accounts of ... Not long after in 323 BC, however, Alexander died and left this newly established city to his half brother and baby son. Alexander s childhood friend, Ptolemy, soon came to rule over the city and Alexandria began rising. Ptolemy had plans for the city and began building innovative roads and two sea harbors. With these new developments, authors note, the fundamental plan of the greatest city in the ancient world was complete. Houses, slaves, cattle, and taxpayers were being taken from surrounding villages and given to the capital city of Alexandria. When Ptolemy s son and successor (Ptolemy II) began his rule on the city, he, too, threw himself into developing Alexandria and created a currency that could be used to sell and trade. Structures were built, such as temples and the lighthouse, and Alexandria was becoming known as the light of the world (p. 92). Along with the furthering of physical growth to the city of Alexandria, there was also growth politically and religiously. Ptolemy wished to fuse ancient thinking with the modern thinking of the Greeks, so he devised a plan and created a cult through a fusion of two gods: the god of the dead and the living bull. And this Greco Egyptian cult was created and called Serapis. Through this newly founded religion and the constant furthering of the city s buildings and technology, Alexandria began to rise. • 3. The Importance Of Attending An Aa Meeting Attending an AA meeting was a very different experience for myself, I had herd of these meetings through family but had never gone so it was a little scary for me to attend. I was not sure on what to really expect when going or what I would get of out attending the meeting, but I was ready. The meeting was over all very interesting and eye opening on how alcoholism occurs differently for every person. I felt like this meeting was just an overview of what alcoholism really is, what it can do to you, and how it affects everyone around you. I learned a lot from attending this meeting and realized what it takes for someone to attend an AA meeting and to come to peace with their problem. I was very nervous about attending an AA meeting alone, I had never been to one and I surely didn t not want to go alone. I remembered a close cousin of mind attended AA meetings frequently, so I asked her if she wouldn t mind going to one with me. I attended the Beginners and Slippers meeting at the Western Club. My first thought on this meeting was that there were going to be a lot of people that are just beginning their journey to recovery. It was very intimidating to attend the AA meeting simply because I felt out of place, like I shouldn t be there. Once we had arrived to the meeting, everyone seemed so friendly and just like ordinary people. Everyone greeted one another and seemed so nice. There were individuals there from higher class to lower class and they looked perfectly find to me, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Discussion Research On Parent Involvement Essay Prior Research on Parent Involvement in Education Before turning to our qualitative study of parent involvement in urban char ter schools, the following sections outline the prior research on the benefits of parent involvement, the barriers to involvement that exist, and the potential of the charter school context to reduce these barriers. Benefits of Parent Involvement Decades of research point to the numerous benefits of parent involvement in education for not only students but also for the parents involved, the school, and the wider community (Barnard, 2004; Epstein, 2001; Fan Chen, 2001; Henderson Mapp, 2002; Jeynes, 2003, 2007; Lee Bowen, 2006). De spite the challenges in establishing a causal link between parent involvement and student achievement, studies utilizing large databases have shown positive and significant effects of parent involvement on both academic and behavioral outcomes (Fan Chen, 2001; Jeynes, 2003, 2007). For example, research has found that parent involvement is related to a host of student achievement indi cators, including better grades, attendance, attitudes, expectations, homework completion, and state test results (Astone McLanahan, 1991; Cancio, West, Young, 2004; Dearing, McCartney, Weiss, Kreider, Simpkins, 2004; Gut man Midgley, 2000; Izzo, Weissberg, Kasprow, Fendrich, 1999; Senechal LeFevre, 2002; Sheldon, 2003). Forms, counterforms and volumes of shape that interact with other characters and space are important considerations in a character. Matthew Carter took the in depth knowledge he gained of the physical forms of letters and transcribed new and ever lasting typefaces from it to become one of the most impactful typography designers of current times. From the Beginning Born in 1937 in London, Carter grew up with an expanded knowledge of typography. His father, Harry, worked in the same field, designing books and type. By the 1970s, he was back in London, still working with Linotype but also freelancing. In 1974 he created Bell Centennial (Figure 1) for AT T which is still used in telephone directories today. After years of freelance work, Carter eventually moved back to the United States and established his own company, Bitstream, in Massachusetts. When traditional typesetting became less profitable and the digital age set it, Bitstream created a collection of digital typefaces. A decade after its creation, Carter left Bitstream to pursue more design work. The Phone Book Bell Centennial was the first digital typeface design that Matthew Carter worked on in 1974. Originally, AT T had wanted to use Helvetica. Erik Spiekermann notes that Helvetica is meant to be consistent and homogeneous. The letters are all similar to one another. • 7. Judith With The Head Of Holofernes As artistic movements sweep certain time periods, location is an important factor in the development of an artist s vision. While Europe is a compact continent, it s artistic productions can be largely influenced by the country of origin. This can be seen in multiple artistic movements such as the Renaissance where works from Italyand England while largely influenced by the same artistic goals produce works with stylistic differences. Baroquestyle art was also subject to these geographical differences influencing the vision of the artist. Understanding the complex layers of an artistic movement requires one to analysis works of art and how they compare to other pieces produced during the same time. By taking two works with the same subject matter, one can effectively dissect the influences that time and place have had on the artist s execution. In 1530 Germany, Lucas Cranach the Elderproduced a painting titled Judith with the Head of Holofernes depicting the biblical heroine Judith with the severed head of Holofernes. A little more than a hundred years later in 1640 Italy, Massimo Stanzione created a similar representation of this story in his work, Judith with the Head of Holofernes. The Benefits Of Lily s Special Needs In Public Schools Lily s parents can argue that the public school should meet Lily s special needs, set up appropriate goals, and be placed in an inclusive classroom. Firstly, the purpose of IDEA is to to ensure that all children with disabilities have available to them a free appropriate public educationthat emphasizes special educationand related services designed to meet their unique needs and prepare them for further education, employment, and independent living (The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004, 2008). It emphasizes that a free appropriate public education need to both meet children s unique needs and enable children with disabilities to be prepared for further education. However, the public school does not try to meet Lily s needs that she often needs instructions broken down into chunks and given individually because she gets easily overwhelmed by sensory input, but has learned many coping strategies for this with support, and her sensory challenges sometimes distract her from what is happening in the class. Furthermore, in the grade three the majority of the goals already been mastered by Lily with her private tutor and second grade teacher, which means that the school district set up no challenging goal for Lily to enable her to have further education and did not meet the requirement that IDEA should prepare children with disabilities for further education, employment, and ... An example of this would be to attribute swollen lymph nodes to a malignant disease, as opposed to a simple viral infection. The consequences mostly affect the individual s psychological and behavioral well being, which leads to the focus of the second theory. Based on Freud s psychodynamic hypotheses, there is a belief that unconscious conflicts are the result of traumatic or frustrating childhood experiences being reawakened in adult life by similar stress or frustration. Consequently, particularly high stress/tension situations could arouse subconscious feelings of guilt, anxiety, and fear for a person, and their inability to express these emotions verbally may lead to physical manifestations of conflict. The Death Of Serial Killers In recent discussions of serial killers, a controversial issue has been whether they were born being the killer that they are or if it is impacted by the way that they grew up. On the one hand, some argue that serial killers are influenced by things in their lives that cause them to become these guiltless killers. From this perspective, porn and violence in the home are big factors in what people believe to be influencing these people. On the other hand, however, others argue that these people are born this way and the way they grow up has no influence. In the words of Helen Morrison, one of these view s main proponents, No matter what country, ethnicity, race, socioeconomic background, education, familial background, they are all exactly the same. According to this view, despite if they are born this way or grew up being influenced by things, they are all the same. In sum, then, the issue is whether they are born this way or if their lives are influenced. My own view has not been solidified at the moment. Reading and researching all this stuff has not yet brought me to my own conclusion which I believed it would do right away. Though I concede that violence in the home and pornography do influence people in different ways, I still maintain that a lot of people grow up with these factors and there are plenty of these people who do not kill anyone and do not have any serial killertendencies. FAST AS WE CAN DELIVERY LIABILITY Dawn was, in general, acting on behalf of her employer when the accident occurred. A possible defense to this would be for her employer to claim Frolic and Detour. Dawn had stopped to do some shopping before heading to DNA Laboratories. Therefore, Fast as We Can Deliver could argue that she was furthering her own interests rather than the principals and therefore they should not be liable. However, courts commonly overlook minor deviations, and thus it is unlikely that this defense would stand. Also, since she was technically off duty at the time, the courts would likely find that it falls under the Dual Purpose mission section of negligence (Cheeseman, 2010, p 477). Meaning that in most jurisdictions the liability would fall on both the principal and the agent if she injuries someone while on such a mission. DNA LABORATORIES LIABILITY The plaintiff in this case is obviously making the claim that DNA Laboratories and Dawn held am agency relationship. This type of agency would have to be implied, as Dawn and DNA Laboratories have not communicated to create an express agency contract (Cheeseman, 2010, p. 465). • 22. Overview Of Nursing Documentation Documentation is a very important task that all nurses must do when working in the healthcare field. Accurate documentation not only assures high quality patient care but is our best defense in a malpractice lawsuit. Avoiding malpractice by proper and complete documentation is about more than just avoiding a lawsuit making it to court; it is about avoiding the litigation process entirely. We need to remember that documenting has to be legible, complete, and thoughtful to prevent risks for litigation. A patient s chart is a medical and legal document. We need to remember that documenting has to be complete and thoughtful to prevent risks for litigation. Again, a patient s chart is a medical and legal document. My example of correct documentation that I am going to use today is based on my recent experience in the CVOU. I took care of one of my nurse s patients through the entire cardiac procedure. All my interventions were important, so I documented them as soon as they were done. During post procedure, I had to assess the patient s femoral incision site for bleeding and swelling or hardening, legs for color and edema, and pedal and popliteal pulses q15 min x4 and q30 min x2. It beats about 100,000 times a day pumping around 2,000 gallons of blood through about 100,000 miles of organic tubing. The heart is a big muscle with four valves connected together to make a two stage pump. The heart gets its energy by oxidizing blood sugars. This released energy, contracts the heart s many muscle cells, and the four chambers squeeze blood out into the arteries. The arteries are thick walled muscular tubes which carry blood away from the heart. The heart has two sides the left ventricle and the right ventricle. The artery from the right ventricle pumps blood to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The venae cavae collects oxygen depleted blood from the body and routes the blood to the right atrium in the heart. When the right atrium squeezes, it pushes blood through the tricuspid valve into the right ventricle. Like the other three heart valves this is a one way valve (blood can only flow in one direction). When the right ventricle contracts, it pushes blood through the pulmonary valve and on into the lungs. Because it does not take much pressure to get blood to the lungs and back, the right side is smaller than the left. The left side has to work harder pumping blood to the rest of the body. Blood in our arteries is at a high pressure, blood in our veins is at low pressure. The blood, rich in oxygen, returns from the lungs through the pulmonary veins into the left atrium. To get all the way round blood has to go through the heart twice and this is why it is called a double circulation. Blood contains red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets floating in a liquid called plasma. The red blood cells contain haemoglobin and carry oxygen. Haemoglobin is a protein which becomes oxyhaemoglobin in the lungs. The white blood cells fight disease by making antibodies and fighting germs. Blood transports these vital materials around the body. Blood plasma contains nutrients, hormones and waste products. Oxygen is carried ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Contemporary academic deliberations of Love s Alchemy by John Donne and On My First Son by Ben Jonson has given rise to one controversial issue: whether love should be labeled as uncertainty. In fact, some argue that the poem Love s Alchemy expresses the cynical love, whereas, the poem On My First Son focuses more on pious love. These contrasting views have also been articulately conveyed through words, such as, Alchemy and Farewell in the individual poetic works of both Donne and Jonson, respectively, with one conclusion: to alter men by first enticing them to a fantasy world, wherein they are rendered unstable, and later, compelling them to correct themselves. According to the one of the contemporary historical records, BДЃbor nДЃma, BДЃbor wrote BihzДЃd was good at portraits of beard man. The statement by BДЃbor means people who lived in the same period thought BihzДЃd s strong point was drawing figures. Figure 1 is the portrait of Dervish, which is attributed to BihzДЃd. To understand Fanon s justification for violence, it is necessary to learn how Fanon defines violence. Fanon s definitions of violence range from psychological to historical to cultural, eventually leading the colonized to redirect this violence to the colonizer as a cleansing ritual. In The Wretched of the Earth, The first type of violence that Fanon addresses is physical and bodily harm. Fanon says that, Their first confrontation was colored by violence and their cohabitation or rather the exploitation of the colonized by the colonizer continued at the point of the bayonet and under cannon fire (Fannon 2). Immediately, the colonizer begins to imprison the indigenous people for the colonist s benefit. He then defines ontological and epistemological violence. Ontological and epistemological violence happens as the colonizer begins to steal the identity of the people they control. This violence creates the bounds between the colonizer and the colonized. It traps the indigenous people with slave identities, marking them as natives. Once this violence occurs, colonizers begin to forget the greater reality of their actions. It becomes a Manichean paradigm. There is no longer a gray area, just black and white, good and evil. The Baroque style, used by Caravaggio, was the absolute opposite of any Renaissance painter that had lived before him and because of this; it was probably the reason why he became the most radical artist of his time. He deserted the rules that had guided a century of artists before him and because of his theatrical break in style from the Italian Renaissance; he carefully brings a completely distinct treatment of narrative. Caravaggio s action of form in his Conversion of St. Paul is extraordinarily different from Perugino s work of art. One of the choices he decided to use was instead of outlining Paul and his horse with lines, Caravaggio abandons this unique style and adds movement by using a painterly style in which he uses paint to create an image and not rigid outlines. He uses color and value to produce a unique form, causing a sense of movement in the figures. • 39. Path Integration for Navigation Path Integration Forms of spatial sensitivity among organisms are exceedingly wide ranging. Spatial sensitivity among lower animals has been studied in its role in navigation. Many of these animals exhibit extraordinary navigational capacities. Amoebae have light sensitivities that lead them to liquid areas that serve their chemical needs. Crickets locate mates using sound. Path integration, or dead reckoning, is one of the four types of navigation. I begin by distinguishing the differences among the four types of navigation. I continue by explaining in more detail the second type of navigation: path integration. Next I explain why one might think that certain types of path integration are not representational. Last I show why path integration doesn t depend on perceptual constancies. Path integration is one of the four types of navigation. The other three are beaconing, landmark use, and map use. Organism s can travel toward or away from a source of stimulation. Beaconing, or homing, is an organism s movement toward a target. That movement is in response to a stimulation that derives from the target s location. Beaconing allows organisms to move in directions that are favorable to them. For example, salmon travel in the ocean for years. After a couple years, they return to their home streams in straight a line. This is a result of them responding to certain hormonal changes. Many organisms use another type of navigation called landmark use. Landmark use ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. A World Divided by Those Who Can Afford Technology and... Imagine a world divided by those who can afford technology and those who cannot. Those that have access to technology are the richest in the world, and those that do not are stuck in poverty with no way to improve their economic status. It sounds like the starting lines of a Hollywood movie but it is a growing issue in America and abroad. The digital divide is the divide or gap between people who have access to technology and those that do not. The divide is creating problems for schools who require more and more assignments to be done on a computer. Also, having the internetis having the power of information and knowledge that not everyone has the ability to access. Other countries suffer from the digital divide at a staggering percentage compared to US, UK and Europe. (Crawford) In the United States the ability to get internet access is usually limited to where you live. There are many homes in the US where there is not reliable internet access. There are elementary schools that require papers, homework and research to be done on computers. The students that do not have easy access to a computer will have a strong disadvantage over those that do. Schools are getting better and more advanced computer labs but not all students can stay after school to complete their homework, if they are required to take the bus. In 1995 the Commerce Department published its findings on the digital divide. They found geographic, economic and racial gaps between ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Banning Books Essay Name Professor Course Date The practice of censorship and banning of books in learning institution has been prevalent mostly due to the explicit content incorporated in them. However, banning of certain books in pretense to conceal content perceived inappropriate to impressionable children is an infringement of their right to access information of their area of choice. While banning some book at times has valid reasons, it is important to endorse and emphasize that every child has the liberty to select, at their discretion, which book to read. While it is agreeable that parents and teachers should play a noble role in regulating books that entail controversial topics as well as educating their children as their primary guardian, their right does not extend to controlling and monitoring what children read ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Book censorship and bans only primes to conformity and thus limiting the variety and range of expression as well as inquiry on which the philosophy depends. Banning and censoring reading materials is capable of limiting the technological innovations, research as well as creativity. It is hence the responsibility of the democracy to avail a diversity of views whether popular or unpopular and else should not coerce the opinions and ideas of some while inhibiting the exertions of others (Memphis, 1). Rather than banning books content, publishers should rather give complete connotation to the liberty of reading by providing books capable of enriching the diversity as well as the quality of knowledge. Reading liberation is of diminutive consequence not unless the reader obtains materials suiting their purposes. Books should hence not be banned due to diverse peoples conflicting views either since one is not entitled to agree with what he reads but should rather learn from it. For instance, history aids students in knowing the events that transpired to shape the world as it is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 44. What Are The Similarities Between Harry Potter And The... Harry Potter and the Phallus Fallacy An exploration of Freudian and Lacanian Phallus Theory The phallus has long been represented as a powerful symbol time and time again in culture, pop culture, society and media. Closely linked to the male biological penis, it is representative of power as well as a symbol of control and strength. Even popular children s literature revolves around the phallus in an unconscious way. The phallus works in several ways in these cases; characters often posses objects representative of the phallus which yield power such as the use of wands, and many story lines follow characters attempting to seize power and trying to maintain that power with the fear of power loss constantly looming over them. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A symbolic version of a phallus, such as a wand, sword or cane, is constructed to represent male generative powers. The phallus in psychoanalytic theory is represented as the supreme symbol of masculine power and of feminine lack (Rine 14 15). Feminist theorists constructed the term phallocentrism in order to denote the pervasive privileging of the masculine within the current system of signification. (Rine 22 26). Freud did not make a distinction between the penis, as a biological bodily organ, and the phallus as a signifier of sexual difference. Freud s theory of psychoanalysis argues that whilst men posses a penis, no one can posses a symbolic phallus (Homer 56). Lacan, in the essay The Signification of the Phallus argues that the difference between having and being the phallus is that men are positioned as men as long as they are seen to have the phallus, whereas women, not having a phallus, are seen to be the phallus (Lacan 1309). To Lacan, the phallus symbolizes both the penis and the clitoris as a signifier but the phallus is constructed to be a signifier of power and is distinguished between the sexes in terms of lack (Lacan 1306, Rine 14). • 46. A Social Group In life, we all play different roles. I am a daughter, niece, friend, student, employee and artist. The definition of a social group is two or more people who interact on a regular basis in routine ways and who share a common sense of membership and identity. A social group example would be classmates in one section of a class and an example of an aggregate would be New Yorkers riding the subway together. An aggregate is not a group but a collection of people who briefly share the same physical space but do not see themselves as belonging together. Over the summer, I auditioned to be part of a theatre company and was asked to join. The name of the company is called Complete Theatre Company and they do shows and have acting classes three days a week. I was recently part of their improvisation show Call My Dog . The people in the class range from ages eighteen to seventy five, normally in the Friday class, they are about 15 people that come, but it depends on the day. It differs week to week. A normal acting class is formatted by doing physical and vocal warm ups, having a keynote speaker where we talk about different aspects about the business of acting and then Annie goes around the room and asks us if we have a scene or a monologue to work on and if we do, we work on them and the class gives positive feedback. We are a primary group because we are small in number, we interact personally (we know about each other s personal life) and we show genuine interest and support ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. U.s. Army National Guard Given constrained funding and the requirements of short term national military objectives and longer term operations, the Army should balance the Total Force as follows: first, decrease the Active Component deployments and increase the Reserve Component, specifically the National Guard. Second, assign National Guard units to specific regions and/or missions so that their training can be focused on these conflicts. And third, increase the use of National Guard units to reduce active component use particularly for low intensity conflict and short term missions. Background: Throughout the course of the United States, the Army National Guard (and to some extent, the United States Army Reserve) has been a bedrock of support to both the President, Congress, and the Governors of the fifty four states and territories. During times of national emergency, civil upheaval, natural disasters, and most recently, during times of war, the National Guard has been counted on to fill capability gaps that exist in the Active Components ranks. In addition, the National Guard had the additional mission of being at the call of the Governors should they choose to utilize that resource, a claim the Active Component cannot make (strictly by law). As such, the National Guard should continue to be utilized as both a resource for governors to use during times of crisis and, perhaps more importantly, should continue to be used, funded, and trained as an operational reserve as well. During this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 48. Computer Science Reflection My undergraduate major is measurement, and I have spent the last three years learning about optics, mechanics, electric circuits, and coding. Among those courses, and following three years of training including pieces of research and coursework, I have realized that I am enamored with coding the most. First of all, I enjoy the process of coding and verifying and adjusting the program. Taking my digital signal processor coursework as an example, after I finished writing the code, it appeared that the code might not have been correct because I could not receive the right temperature. So I set the program to a debug mode and run every single step of my code and observed the feedback value. This was a very diversion for me. With the criticism comes about because of single step investigating, I made a couple of theories about the issue, for example, the time postponed is not sufficiently exact, or I might be coding about the wrong sticks. So I checked these hypotheses one by one, and for reasons unknown, the issue is the piece of my program concerning time deferring because the segment I used to quantify temperature which is DS18B20 is extremely strict on timing arrangement. Getting the right outcome is exceptionally fulfilling, so is the procedure because through speculation autonomously I procure much involvement and capability. Another thing that intrigues me regarding computer science comes from what I have learned through our research requirement in theory and technology ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
