Australia s policies in regard to asylum seekers and refugee processing, are viewed as very
controversial, and often inhumane by the international community (Lock, Quenault Tomlinson
2002, p.37). To discuss this policy, I will apply an external analysis. In order to decide whether
this policy is seen as good or bad, through a social, economic and human rights perspective.
The policy originated in 1992 where asylum seekers who arrive by boat to Australia, are permitted
to mandatory detention (Manne 2016). This policy expanded in 2001 to the Pacific Solution ,
where those deemed unlawful citizens are to be kept in offshore mandatory detention in countries
such as Papua New Guinea, Manus Island and Nauru. However, the costs of this would be
covered by the Australian government (Henderson 2014, p.1163 1165). Because of this, numbers
of asylum seekers accepted into Australia significantly decreased (Lohana, Khaskhely, Khan,

what actually is the American dream? Does it truly exist? When one thinks of the American

all men are created equal but also believe in the beauty of life, liberty, and the pursuit of
happiness. United States citizens as well as immigrants, believed in what the declaration had said
and that it would push them closer to an experience of the American dream. Though people are
excited to move towards a better life, they become a bit hesitant because they do not know exactly
what the American dream is, nor do they know if all people are granted the same chance towards
the American dream due to their age, race, their social status, traditions and any other factors.
John Adams once stated that this American dream we speak of should give a better life to
everyone but only according to their ability. To me this means that everyone deserves a better life

This reflection paper is over my fifth week at my practicum site. This week I was in the office on
Monday and Tuesday. This week I was able to attend a court hearing and I wrote up my visitation
log from the visit that happened last week.
There are a lot of things that has to happen when the Department of Children and Family Services
(DCFS) take protective custody (PC) of a child. After DCFS has taken PC over a child or children
they have to have court within 2 days. The court date is considered the first court hearing. The
perpetrator is encouraged to come and they have been appointed and attorney. The attorney will be
there to represent their client at this first initial court hearing.
The first court hearing consists of many different things. The first thing that happen is the
investigator is called to the stand and asked questions about what happened during the investigation
that were significant enough to take PC. This is a precaution step to make sure the kids were
removed for a legitimate reason. At this point the judge can sign off on the order of PC or return the
kids home to the perpetrator. The investigator explained this process to me prior to going into the
courtroom and she said the judge never sends the kids back home. The perpetrator can be called to
the stand but most of the time they are not. The next thing that is put in place is a permanency
order for the child. The permanency order is put in place for temporary housing. The last thing that

The resting heart rate fluctuates over time because it is under control of the autonomic nervous
system and the fluctuations are a result of the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems trying to
balance each other out.
There are many reasons on why the resting heart rate can fluctuate over time. Factors can include
things like the temperature of the room we were in, or what we ate/ drank for breakfast. Also
