John Brown Crimes
John Brown s actions at Pottawatomie Creek and Harper s Ferry can be seen as acts of terrorism
by a person or peoples opinion, but a closer study of modern and historic violent actions show he
was a freedom fighter. Certainly, this is factual because there is no actual definition of terrorism, it
is simply an opinion on someone s actions. Therefore, it is almost irrelevant for one be convicted a
terrorist if no one can actually have a justified reasoning behind their choices.
Some may say Brown s childhood had a major impact on some of his violent actions that
occurred later on in his life. When he was very young, he suffered the loss of his mother. As a
result it began to harvest a bit of rage in his heart that would soon turn into a never ending spiral
of rage. It wasn t long after this loss that Brown witnessed a slave being beaten. It was that moment
that Brown began to pursue his goal of ending slavery.
Brown made many violent attacks through his long attempt to end slavery. One of Brown s rather
horrific attacks was the murder of five pro slavery settlers in the Pottawatomie Creek. It was once
stated that brown did this act of violence out of rage, and it ... Show more content on

Brown s goal was to end slavery. Unlike the group that was formed in 1969 on the campus of the
University of Michigan. This group has taken part in numerous violent actions in an attempt to
draw attention to their goal, such as a jailbreak, bombings, and a riot in Chicago. The weather
underground s goal is fear, they want people to fear them in order to reach their cause of creating
a party to overthrow the U.S. government. Modern day judgement systems would say he was
clearly a terrorist, but there is no actual definition of terrorism. Therefore, it is not acceptable or fair

Comparison Of Howl And Song Of Myself
Howl by Ginsberg and Song of Myself by Whitman, have different and similar variances on the take
of the world. Howl is more technical and gets straight to the point of the world whereas Song of
Myself starts off with a happier side of the world. Whitman describes world as heaven and Ginsberg
describes live as dark and evil. Where Whitman is less harsh and Ginsberg is very harsh. Also,
Ginsberg uses a raw language to describe the world in a deeper perspective. In Song of Myself,
Whitman describes the world as a hopeful place in which a lot can be done. He states, The
atmosphere is not a perfume, it has no taste of the
distillation, it is odorless,

When Whitman says, The youngster and the red faced girl turn aside up the bushy hill; I
peeringly view them from the top. The suicide sprawls on the bloody floor of the bed room; I
witness the corpse with its dabbled hair I note where the pistol has fallen (lines 150 153),
Ginsberg replies with, who created great suicidal dramas on the apartment cliff banks of the
Hudson under the wartime blue floodlight of the moon their heads shall be crowned with laurel
in oblivion (line 46). These two quotes stand out and seem that they are replying to one other. In
lines 150 168 in Song of Myself , he discussed that he has been through many experience in one,
which is horrifying as children committing suicide. Ginsberg replies to this as if they have
committed suicide they should be honored and given the status of a hero for such bravery.
Ginsberg way of discussing suicide is more intense than Whitman s. Ginsberg definition of
suicide is the resort of pain and suffering and that leads to being honored because it takes a lot of
will to go through the agony. Whitman see s the suffering but ignores it because it s a part of how
the world is and he cannot be judgmental of whom ever is suicidal because he accepts that the

The Invention Of The Steam Engine
Steam Engine
The invention of the steam engine served as a vital building block to the success of the first
Industrial Revolution. At first steam engines harnessed the power of coal to streamline the
manufacturing process. The invention led to the creation of mills and factories that were once
filled with manual labors. Meanwhile ships and trains fueled by steam engines soon moved
manufactured goods and people more efficiently than horse and buggy. The improved engines were
soon used in every industry from agriculture to textile production. In the textile industry it allowed
for faster and more efficient production without the threat of human error. By the end of its
illustrious run, steam power was instrumental in the development of waterways and railroad
systems that led the Industrial Revolution.
At the time though, the world feared industrial use of steam power would soon lead to greater
joblessness, replacing hard physical work and animal force that powered many industries. The
Luddites, in particular, protested that machine and automations would make humans redundant,
however after the steam engine replaced water wheels as a power source in manufacturing,
employment expanded from 1.2 million jobs in 1830 to 8.3 million by 1910. The overall success
of steam technology led to many new innovations and effectively its own demise

Drinking Alcoholic Beverages
DRINKING ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES
An alcoholic beverage is a drink containing ethanol, commonly known as alcohol. Alcoholic
beverages are divided into three general classes: beers, wines, and spirits (or distilled beverage).
They are legally consumed in most countries, and over 100 countries have laws regulating their
production, sale, and consumption.[1] In particular, such laws specify the minimum age at which a
person may legally buy or drink them. This minimum age varies between 16 and 25 years,
depending upon the country and the type of drink. Most nations set it at 18 years of age.[1]
The production and consumption of alcohol occurs in most cultures of the world, from hunter

However, there are some controversies regarding this definition mainly because the large number of
chemical substances reported in chemistry literature need to be indexed.
Isomerism caused much consternation to early researchers, since isomers have exact the same
composition, but differ in configuration (arrangement) of the atoms. For example, there was much
speculation for the chemical identity of benzene, until the correct structure was described by
Friedrich August KekulГ©. Likewise, the idea of stereoisomerism that atoms have rigid three
dimensional structure and can thus form isomers that differ only in their three dimensional
arrangement was another crucial step in understanding the concept of distinct chemical substances.
For example, tartaric acid has three distinct isomers, a pair of diastereomers with one diastereomer
forming two enantiomers. chemical is a form of matter that has constant chemical composition and
characteristic properties.[1] It cannot be separated into components by physical separation

How Did Joseph Haydn Develop Music During The 18th Century
Joseph Haydn, in full Franz Joseph Haydn (born March 31, 1732, Rohrau, Austria died May 31,
1809, Vienna), wan an Austrian composer who was one of the most influential composers in aiding
the development of the Classical style in music during the 18th century. He helped establish the
forms and styles for the string quartet and the symphony.
Haydn, from a young age, displayed unusually great musical gifts, and a cousin who was
choirmaster in the nearby city of Hainburg offered to take him and train him. Haydn, not yet six
years old, left home, never to return to his humble cottage except for rare visits.
His life changed significantly when he was eight years old. The musical director of St. Stephen s

Education Budget Cuts Essay
Education is the most important possession a person must have. It is the keys to success, wealth,
and knowledge. It is the only possession that cannot be taken away from a person and it will open
up the windows of opportunities. Education will help us grow as an individual, have better
understanding of life, and give us a financial stability; but what happens when educationget cuts

As stated above, State Schools Chief Jack O Connell believes that student s education should be

students for productive futures. What he means by this is that we should have an educated,
highly skilled workforce that can compete in the global economy for our state s long term

effects of employee recognition, pay, and benefits on job satisfaction to employees in USA,
Malaysi, and Vietnam. While there are significant differences statistically between the four
variables of the study, all groups concurred that pay, benefits, and recognition are vital in
improving job satisfaction of employees. The results solidify the hypothesis that pay is integral to
job satisfaction in all of the three countries despite varying cultures. It is important to take note that

(Judge et al, 2010). The overall analysis of the literatures and findings presented above prove that
compensation is a factor in improving employee job satisfaction. To be able to study the
relationship of compensation and profitability, the next discussion will analyse the effect of job
satisfaction to productivity and, hence, profitability which is essential in answering the research
questions. EFFECT OF JOB SATISFACTION TO PRODUCTIVITY AND PROFITABILITY
There had been literatures and arguments that express the importance of improving employee
satisfaction as it increases service quality and, in turn, improve customer loyalty and profitability. In
a study about the relationship between and among employee satisfaction, customer satisfaction, and
financial performance, the proponents cited the work of Rucci, Kirn, Quinn (1998) in which
discussed and analysed the case of Sears and used the Service Profit Chain. The report revealed
that by improving employee satisfaction by 5 points customer satisfaction and sales increased by
1.3 points and 0.5% respectively. One of the literatures presented in the study explained that the

The State Of The Electoral College
Tyranny naturally arises out of democracy. These words from the Greek philosopher Plato
summarize the most fundamental concern of the delegates to the Constitutional Convention when
they considered what the best way to conduct presidential elections would be. While, in concept,
democracy sounds like the fairest form of government, in practice, it is less than ideal. Fear of
tyranny of the majority prompted discussion over how the president should be elected. The
Founders chose the Electoral Collegewhich incorporates democracy, federalism, and republicanism
for presidential selection, because it provided for the best balance of power. The Electoral College
was the product of no small amount of debate during the Constitutional... Show more content on

While he agreed that the sense of the people should operate in the choice of the [president], he
made clear the importance of afford[ing] as little opportunity as possible to tumult and disorder.
This would require the will of the people to be tempered by an intermediate body of electors. Not
only would this be a compromise between the competing ideas in the Constitutional Convention, it
would prevent any one group from having undue discretion when it came to electing the most
powerful person in government. Of these competing ideas, two are prominently reflected in the
Electoral College. The first is democracy, an idea largely advanced by Alexis de Tocqueville in
Democracy in America. Democracy, loosely defined as the direct representation of people in
government, seems the most logical way to conduct an election. The second is federalism.
Understanding how this could become problematic, the founders decided to include states in the
election process. According to Federalist 68, this would allow the people of each State [to] choose
a number of persons as electors...who shall assemble...and vote for some fit person as President.
This balance of individual and state discretion would soon be codified in Article 2, Section 1 of the
Constitution.
The Electoral College has remained steadfast in our ever changing world. What

Summary Of The Song Landslide
Landslide, by Fleetwood Mac, is written to show how the removal of a loved one can impact
someone s life negatively or positively. The theme of the song can be found in several lyric such
as, Well, I ve been afraid of changin, cause I ve built my life around you (Fleetwood Mac). It is
said that if a couple thinks that their relationship is not going to work out, it can tumble over at

Traditional Methods Of Managing Personal Income
There are three traditional methods of managing personal income. 1. Budgeting, 2. Keeping a
spending history, and 3. Doing nothing (also known as living from paycheck to paycheck).
Budgeting involves setting what percent of future income is to be spent on which categories of
expenses, and then recording all purchases in order to track how well spending is staying within
the predefined limits. The process sounds very simple, however, it is difficult, in my opinion, to
stick with a budget for very long. The energy and dedication needed to keep track of where the
money goes is tremendous. I ve tried budgeting on several occasions and failed miserably
because I couldn t stomach keeping track of every penny I spent. Traditional budgets also tend
to fail because the setting of rigid spending limits does not lend itself well to being flexible.
When unforeseen expenses pop up, a budget can be rendered useless very quickly. It s my
experience that budgets can feel like monetary straight jackets that are soon abandoned. Spending
Histories A Vicious Cycle Keeping a spending history also involves the recording of every penny
spent. The intent is to use the spending history as a basis for identifying spending habits that can
be improved and then making needed changes to future spending patterns. The main weakness of
keeping a spending history is that it is focused on past activity and, therefore, is of little help when
a person is trying to make immediate decisions about

The Impact Of Hot Topic On Consumers And American Pop Culture
Getting teenagers to buy your items can be really complicated, especially with new trends changing
from month to month. Even though the average consumer can t possibly think how these stores are
able to keep up and manage the sudden changes in culture the community brings, they do know that
each day in a store brings new products and different arrangements throughout the store to fit the
consumer s needs. Specifically enough, each store creates an image for themselves that
exemplifies the culture and shows us something about the times we live in at that moment. Hot
Topic influences the way the consumer buys their products by integrating family friendly items
and American pop culture within their products in order to appeal and attract customers into
buying merchandise that is relevant and trending. What is Hot Topic? Hot Topic is an American
retail store that is largely based in California that sells culture related clothes, largely attracting
young teenagers and adults. The store is basely located in California, but has stores in other parts
of the U.S. and Canada. It is evident that Hot Topic is a store that always visually changes from
time to time, in order to appeal to the young consumers that walk by there stores when they go

An Emotional Connection Made with Audi Commercial Essay
Audi, the maker of elite model cars, designed an advertising campaign for the 2013 Super Bowl
that claimed driving an Audi would allow the owner to feel more daring. The advertisement opens
up with a high school senior boy wearing a tux, with his mother pinning his boutonniere to his
jacket. The boy clearly looks unenthused about going to prombecause he does not have a date to
the prom, which his mother attempts to sooth him by saying that there are many people who go to
the prom without dates. His younger sister antagonizes her older brother about not having a date.

With this advertisement, the Audi S6 is that object that provides the young man the courage to
kiss the prom queen and park in the principal s parking spot. The car provided the young man the
sense of security to tackle his inner demons and carry out his desires with no regrets. The Audi
instills this sense of sophistication and authority within the young boy and that because he
drove an Audi, the opportunity to be brave clearly outweighed the consequences of his defiance,
as demonstrated at the end of the commercial as he was driving with a black eye after being
beaten up for kissing the prom queen. The Prom commercial has a logical appeal. By creating
the relatable story of an awkward and dateless young man on his prom night, Audi was able to
make an emotional connection with its audience. Their slogan, Bravery. It s what defines us. ,
permits a logical appeal that if an Audi can allow that young boy to be brave, than an Audi can
evoke that sense of bravery within them as well. If bravery defines a person, and an Audi
defines bravery, than the car a person drives defines who that person is. Therefore, the logical
claim that Audi is making is that the car a person drives defines them, and by driving an Audi, a
person can be seen as classy, brave and sophisticated. In conclusion, Audi is trying to make the
argument that owning an Audi is more than owning a car, owning an Audi is an experience that
will instill a sense of class, pride and bravery. This

moment and ask yourself, can it be true? I am glad to dedicate my thoughts and experiences in this
essay about changes that include my favorite person, the one and only, James Franco who has
inspired me to write this longed for essay.
One of my biggest inspiration sources behind this essay was James Franco. He is known as an
author, actor and a director. In my eyes, he is likely the most decent person I know. Even though I
have not met him in person, it feels like I have known him for ages. I admire him: his compelling
eyes, smile and his extraordinary laugh. When I first heard of Franco, I was sitting behind a
computer screen after watching one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I wanted to change some important things in my life that included: my writing skills, reading
comprehension and talking slower when having an oral presentation. In order to do these
changes, I put up goals. To accomplish the first goal, which was the reading comprehension, I
went to the library and borrowed some classic English literature books: Pride and prejudice by
Jane Austin, Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain and Moby Dick by Herman Melville.
Also, in todayВґs society, there are millions of people who want changes in their lives. The
changes can be: getting healthier, stop with drug addicts or become a better person. As the
quotation goes easier said than done is very common. I have met people who want s changes in
their lives, but have not taken into account for any reason. I would say that it is perhaps of the
lack of inspiration and not committing 100% of hard work to aim the goal. There is also a quote
that I consider can be true about addicts who aspire after a change This is what addicts do. The
second they start making progress they screw up, because deep down they think it s only a matter
of time before they fail. They d rather fall from the third floor than the

The Battle of Adolescence in The Catcher in the Rye by...
Adolescence is stressful and confusing to say the least, and is a time in one s life where one
begins to discover who they are and what they want as they transition into the adult world. In J.D.
Salinger s classic American novel, The Catcher in the Rye, the main character Holden, is a
downhearted teenage boy used by Salinger in order to portray universal themes to the reader
including isolation, loss of innocence, and the phoniness of the adult world. Through Salinger s
use of symbolism, the reader is able to ponder Holden and his struggles as he embarks into
adulthood in order to come to a deeper understanding of the themes Salinger s symbols represent.
One of the most widely recognized symbols of the book is Holden s curiosity about the ducks in
Central Park. Holden longs for answers to his question of where the ducks go in the winter. The
ducks. Do you know by any chance? I mean does somebody come around in a truck or
something and take them away, or do they fly away by themselves go south or something? (107).
As the ice freezes over the pond and winter comes, the ducks leave, able to escape the brutal
winter and the ice for a more pleasant, warmer climate to the south. Holden longs to avoid being
apart of the adult world that is engulfed with phoniness, but is unable to understand how to do so.
The fish don t go no place. They stay right where they are, the fish. Right in the goddamn lake...

The AFLCIO and Organized Labor Regeneration
The AFLCIO and Organized Labor Regeneration While researching this paper I came across a
very interesting article. In the November 2000 issue of Reason magazine, Michael McMenamin
leads with the following paragraph: Organized labor was a one century phenomenon. Look it
up. Union members were only 9.5% of the private sector work force in 1999, down from a peak
of 37% 40 years earlier. The last time union membership was so low was in 1902, when the
union members were 9.3% of the private sector work force #8230; The current union leaders, led
by AFL CIO president John Sweeney, have no realistic plans to change course. They are presiding
over the final, terminal stage of organized labor. And they like things just the way they are.... Show

According to the Gallup organization, approval for organized labor has never fallen below 55%
(which happened in 1979 and 1981) and had actually risen to 65% by 1999. Gallup also placed
organized labor alongside big business and big government and asked people which one was the
biggest threat to the country. In 1965 organized labor was a close second to big government.
Labor received 29% to big governments 35%. Organized labor as a threat steadily declined and
by 1999 only 8% of the people viewed it as the biggest threat behind big business at 24% and big
government at 65%. (Cornfield 1999) The declining view of big labor as a threat could explain the
rising approval ratings. Those who think that the unions have fallen far enough that they are no
longer a threat could offer an approval even though they may personally disapprove of them. It is
analogous to attitude towards small communist countries such as Korea and Cuba. While many do
not approve of the way in which the countries operate, they no longer view them as a viable threat
to the democratic nations. While the public opinion towards unions has softened in the recent years,
unions still face a monumental task in trying to regain, or even maintain membership levels. In
order to maintain their current proportion of the workforce, unions must organize 300,000 workers
a year. In order to even begin to approach the

Compare And Contrast William Shakespeare And Dickens s...
William Shakespeare s and Charles Dickens literary works
William Shakespeare was born 1564 and died 1616. He was an English writer and considered to
be history s greatest dramatist of all time and wrote epic poems and sonnets. His dramas
categorized into, tragedies, historical dramas and comedies. He has also written a few dramas
about romance and problem plays. From the beginning William Shakespeare wrote his plays in the
traditional way but with time he developed his writing style to be more expressive. He often
wrote about the upper classes, but tried to bring in people of lower value. Shakespeare s most
famous plays are the tragic Romeo and Juliet
Charles Dickens has a rich life story, both good and bad things. He was born in 1812 and died

Essay On Frankenstein Perspective
Point of view and perspective are very influential tools. Seeing different perspectives can change
another person or observer s perspective. Thoughts and experiences influence perspective heavily.
We can see this in our political climate, in psychology, and the way people treat one another based
on their experiences, thoughts, and previous actions. This carries on to Frankenstein is the excerpt;
he has a very heavily varied perspective than those of the villagers , and there is a distinct
difference in thought. Readers learn the thoughts going through Frankenstein s mind, as well as his
good deeds, actions, and curiosity with a will to learn and discover. If the story were to be told
from the point of viewof a villager, it would probably be very negative and completely different to
Frankenstein s perspective.
Actions are very important in telling what something or someone is like. Future actions can be
estimated by someone s previous actions; actions usually reflect the character and personality of
someone. Positive actions are almost always associated with a good hearted, positive person, and
negative actions usually correspond with wretched, wicked, fearful, hateful, and negative people.
These staples of action and character seem to apply to Frankenstein as well. In paragraphs 4 6, he
discovers that the family he usually observes suffers from poverty. What s amazing is that when he
heard and understood this, he refrained from taking their food again. For a monster who

A Day At The Trenches Narrative Report
I was more than grateful to discover a parcel of crackers and supplies arrive in my name. I thank
you for your remarkable support towards me over the course of this seemingly endless war. After
spending a year and a half under constant hell fire in a strange and distant place, I am more than
eager to come home to you.
When I initially enlisted in the Royal Army, I felt it was my duty to defend our glorious Empire
against the malevolent hands of the vicious Jerries. I expected to gloriously march into Europe;
but with every incident bringing me closer and closer to death, I feel as if I signed myself up for
a suicide mission. The day I boarded the RMS Alaunia is still clear in my memory. Thousands of
men like me were crammed into the vessel, anticipating the imminent adventure and the chance to
travel abroad. Everyone was certain that this war would soon be over and that we would all

Sometimes, men would be asked to go on a trench raid. If the attack was successful, the soldiers

Overhead costs rates are revised annually but the standard for direct labor and material are only
changed when prices, production methods or production designed are changed significantly.
However, an employee of Shun, Manjit, has decided to change the method in which Shun
Electronics calculates its costs of its products. Manjit wants to expand the three departmental cost
centers to eight, each with its own overhead cost allocation rate. As a result, it appears that the
total costs for four of their six radios will increase, while two will decrease. This poses a great deal
of issues concerning Shun Electronics:
Standard cost of product change
Longer run functions such as price change, make/buy decisions, financial planning and corporate
management evaluation divisional performance are altered significantly
This new costing method may change current incentives of managers
Profit margins for some products decreased while others increased
This poses us with three alternatives we can take for Shun Electronics:
1.Continue on with our current cost model
2.Adopt Manjit s cost model
3.Alter Manjits model and compute new numbers

Resistance To Change In Fahrenheit 451
The Resistance to Change in Fahrenheit 451
In the novel Fahrenheit 451, multiple abstract and concrete ideas are represented. Those ideas
include the use of the outsiders to represent the old society, the use of the mechanical hound to
represent the resistance to change, and the use of the atomic bomb to symbolize a new reality.
However, these specific examples of representation within the novel are highlighted due to the fact
that they together compose an allegory.
Within the novel, three main societies are expressed through the representation of various
groups or characters. An old society, a middle society, and a new society are all expressed in the
book. The old society is allowed to read and possess literature. The middle society has banned
literature in order to prevent anyone from being unhappy and disagreeing with it. As one essay
written by Timothy E. Kelley expresses, the middle society are a people, who willingly give up
their right to be happy in favor of protection from ever being unhappy (Kelley n.p.). The new
society does not appear in the book, but is instead being created.
The old society is represented by the group of outcasts that the main character Montag meets in the
third part of the novel after escaping the city. The outcasts have refused to accept the change that
the middle society as instituted instead choosing to leave their homes as they were unable to safely
remain there. The group is welcoming to Montag and even appear to be expecting him. The

Importance Of Multiculturalism In Australia
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has stated that Australia is the world s most successful
multicultural nation . All the people know Australia is a multicultural state which is a civilization
of populace from a wealthy variety of artistic, racial, linguistic. The multiculturalism describes the
difference of cultureand race in modern Australia. This difference is trying to safeguard the benefit
of every Australian and national interest. Cultural variety is significant since our state,
workplaces, and school are comprised of a variety of artistic, ethnic, and racial clusters. We can
gain knowledge of it from one another. Everyone has their rights to express and share their culture
heritage including language and religion. All of us have to establish a stage of accepting about
each other. Everyone needs to respect each other whatever by different culture and religion, this is
the meaning of freedom. Freedom is not likely to get rid of limitation or do what you want to do. It
is a standard that everyone can understand the differences brought about by different cultures.
Firstly, the existence of multiculturalism must lead to some differences. But to be respected and
enhance the freedom of others can reduce conflict of culture. Sometimes, religion faith can decide
lifestyle and ideology of others. Every religion has their faith and rites. Based on the Australia
bureau of statistics survey (2011), there were above five hundred diverse tribe group or nation

Boxing Should Not be Banned Essay
Boxing Should Not be Banned In recent years, there have been many campaigns to try and have

threatening and generally unsafe. It can also be argued that it is immoral to give someone money

All boxers obviously believe that the benefits of the ancient sport outweigh its negative side. This
is shown in their enthusiasm to take potentially high risks in order to gain the rewards of winning.
Like all sports, there is an element of danger involved however we have the freedom to decide
whether or not to take part in it.
One of the main arguments for boxing being banned is that serious medical injury can result
from boxing due to continuous blows to the head. In boxing when the head is knocked
sideways, the brain swirls in the skull, its layers shearing and sliding off one another, tearing
vital nerve fibres . Statistics show that 15 20% of boxers ending a professional career develop
the punch drunk syndrome . This syndrome consists of the brain weakening, loss of memory,
slowed speech and difficulty in walking. Also boxing can effect the time of death. A
professional boxer dies around 10 15 years earlier than the average life expectancy. People argue
that a sport, which can result in players suffering from brain damage and cerebral ischemia ( a
disruption of blood supply to an area of the brain ) should be banned straight away because of the
life threatening risks involved

The End Of Education By Neil Postman
This paper is a response to Chapter Three: Some New Gods that Fail of Neil Postman s The End of
Education . This excerpt focuses on what Postman considers the dangerous faith of many in the
field of education to engage in idolatry of technology. He goes on to support his argument that
concludes that the improvements promised to us by technophiles working in educationare not
forthcoming and will likely make things worse. Postman writes in this chapter a critique of the
logical failings he observes in his contemporaries on how education should be improved. In
disagreement with Postman s opinion I wish to highlight how he has failed to understand how
interactive media is fundamentally different than previous media formats and that his focus on
overzealous promises from bureaucrats has blinded him to the actual opportunities for real growth
in education.
One of his earliest points is to attack the optimistic vision of Dr. Diane Ravitch, the former
Assistant US Secretary of Education (Postman, 38). He cites a piece she wrote that creates a
fictitious child called Little Eva who elects to learn Algebra while dealing with a case of insomnia
(Postman, 39). Postman claims that Ravitch s child is so different from any he has met on earth
and that she must have come from mars (Postman, 39). At best this statement seems to be arguing a
point that ignores the context that it was given in and more alarmingly sounds much like a Counsel
to Despair. Little Eva could never want to

Communism In George Orwell s Animal Farm
Author George Orwell models a farm of animals after a class system that inevitably exists in which
animals fall into stronger and weaker roles and ranks based on their position. In Animal Farm by
George Orwell, the author allegorically utilizes the animals on the farm to deconstruct the class
systems, and show the weaknesses of a communist government. Animal Farm by George Orwell
allegorically embodies communism throughout the novel with the created concept of
animalism. Introduced by one of the main characters Major, the first leader of the animals,
when he brought about the plot of equality. During his most influential speech, Major says, I
merely repeat, remember always your duty of enmity towards Man and all his ways. Whatever
goes upon two legs is an enemy. Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend. And
remember also that in fighting against Man, we must not come to resemble him. Even when
you have conquered him, do not adopt his vices. No animal must ever live in a house, or sleep in
a bed, or wear clothes, or drink alcohol, or smoke tobacco, or touch money, or engage in trade. All
the habits of Man are evil. And, above all, no animal must ever tyrannise over his own kind. Weak
or strong, clever or simple, we are all brothers. No animal must ever kill any other animal. All
animals are equal. (Orwell, 3) This monologue in the middle of chapter one, allows the reader to
make a connection to communism from the beginning to allow for further understanding.
Animalism and Communism share the aspect of equality amongst all citizens but in its roots, the
idea is flawed in both mind and practice. As mentioned in an article by Occupy Theory, one of the
greatest flaws with communism, and as seen in Animal Farm as a great obstacle, the lower class is
unable to question the actions of their superiors, this amount of power tends to corrupt those who
have it. The ruling class of communist nations tends to become quite greedy, since there is no way
for the classes beneath them to gain insight into how their nation truly works . It is seen throughout
the entire novel of Animal Farm by George Orwell that the animals are ignorant to the corruption in
their government and the practices they

To Kill A Mockingbird Analysis
To Kill A Mockingbird takes place during the 1930 s, a time of intense racial inequity and
prejudice. Harper Lee intends for the novel to display the harsh reality to the real world, and
exhibit how life and society were really like during this period in history. Humanity s views and
morals have shown little sign of ever being able to accept change or difference as seen in
particular issues such as racism, discrimination, sexism, prejudice etc. Whilst reading the novel,
readers can identify these well known problems and maybe even relate to some of the ideas that
Lee is portraying. Lee uses symbols to effectively communicate and express her thoughts and
opinions on the various themes of the book. Moreover, these symbols are able to tap into the
subconscious mind to implement ideas that can be analyzed in order to understand their
relevance to not only the plot line and major theme topics of the novel: appearance versus
reality, conscience and integrity, and loss of innocence, but also to modern society. At first
glance, Maycomb appears to be a quaint, peaceful town. Lee later proves this to be a common
misconception made by outsiders. Throughout the novel, we come to learn the true nature and
life of Maycomb. Underneath the picture perfect image, there is a disease spreading, infiltrating
and infecting the minds of Maycomb. (pg 117). Jem, I ain t ever heard of a nigger snowman, I said.

The Pros And Cons Of Animal Experimentation
Animal experimentation has been a controversial subject for decades. Millions of animals have
been killed in United States laboratories for biology lessons, medical training, curiosity driven
experiments, and chemical, drug, food, and cosmetics testing. Animal experimentation has proven
to be an imprecise way of research and practices in animal cruelty. There are alternatives to animal
testingthat have been proven more accurate, but because of tradition these alternatives are
overlooked by many. The three R s of animal testing, reduction, refinement, and replacement, should
be implemented. The testing of animals does not have enough beneficial results to deem it
necessary. Many drugs proven safe for animals have been proven harmful to humans in human
trials. In order to make experimentation more accurate, scientists should rely on human cells and
carefully conducted clinical trials with humans (as cited in Thomas, 2009, p. 95).
Stop Animal Experimentation
Animal experimentation has become a very controversial subject since the development of more
advanced technology. Estimates of the number of animals used each year for experiments in United
States laboratories range from seventeen to seventy million (as cited in Animal Friends Croatia ,
2009, p. 15). Animal experimentation, which is also known as animal testing, is experiments that
use non human animals that seek to control the variables that affect the behavior or biological
system under study. Although animal

Wireless Networks Can Be Broadly Classified Into Three...
Wireless Networks can be broadly classified into three categories: Infrastructure based networks,
Wireless LANs and Ad Hoc Networks. Infrastructure based networks are traditional cellular
systems which require base station infrastructure. Wireless LANs are very flexible within the
reception area. It requires low bandwidth when compared to wired networks. Ad Hoc networks are
useful when the infrastructure is not available, impractical or expensive to build.
In Cellular Wireless, spaces are divided into cells. Each cell consists of base stations which is
responsible to communicate with the hosts in its cell. Hosts moves from one cell to cell to another
and hand off occurs, the new base station takes care of the communication. In Multi hop wireless,
mobility causes a change of route. Hence it need to traverse multiple links to reach destination. Ad
hoc network is a self organizing multi hop wireless network, which relies neither on infrastructure
nor on the predetermined connectivity.
Rapid deployment of mobile users will be the need for the next generation wireless communication
systems. A mobile ad hoc network is a collection of mobile users that communicate over constrained
wireless links with lower bandwidth. Network scenarios which include establishing dynamic
communication for emergency/rescue operations, survivable, efficient, disaster relief efforts and
military networks cannot rely on organized and centralized connectivity. Networks are known as ad
hoc because

Analysis Of All That Heaven Allows
The development and implementation of 3D in popular cinema shares many similarities with the
introduction of color into films. If we examine the histories of both technologies, Moana s color
analogue is Douglas Sirk s melodrama All That Heaven Allows. In terms of timeline, both come at a
point when the art form is still in between the astonishment and absorption phases of using the
technology. Though All That Heaven Allows was made around fifteen years after the first
technicolorfilms, the movie is still designed to have the audience notice its beautifully colored
shots. Most of the films landscapes feel oversaturated and doctored. These exterior shots often
feel more like paintings to appreciate rather than providing context for the film s interior shots. At
the same time, color doesn t define the story and characters in the same way as early Technicolor
films like Michael Curtiz s The Adventures of Robin Hood. In those instances color acted as a
constant signal of where we were in the narrative, and formed strong associations between
characters and individual colors. In All That Heaven Allows, the color schemes don t drastically
change to suit the narrative, but they re still far from fading into the background. Sirk uses color
more as an emotional cue, nudging the audience into feeling the drama of the film. Ultimately, All
That Heaven Allows is a film made in the liminal period between astonishment and absorption of
color.
Moana uses 3D in a similar manner to All That Heaven Allows, as a noticeable but ultimately
auxiliary narrative tool. In earlier digital 3D films, negative and positive parallax were used to
create discrete new worlds. Avatar and Coraline were crafted to feel entirely different when the
protagonists ventured into a different environment, similar to the color phases of Robin Hood.
Moana, on the other hand, uses 3D in a way that pervades the entire film. Rather than build new
worlds, Moana uses 3D for the emotional effect, bringing characters and objects towards and away
from the audience to make us feel. Though the purpose of the film is not to showcase 3D
technology, we can t help but notice stuff flying at us during dynamic sequences like How Far I ll

What Is The Purpose Of Universal Education Dbq
In 1630, John Winthrop dreamt that America was a City on the Hill , predestined for preeminence.
In 1776, the American Colonies proclaimed independence with the affirmation that all men are
equal, free, and blessed with the sacred rights to life, liberty, and happiness. These uniquely
American ideals ideals characterized the young democracy in contrast to the oppressive monarchies
of Europe. European citizens saw the correlation between America s greatness and its democratic
principles. The liberties that America furnished to all men, regardless of status, gave citizens pride
in their nation and drew envy from constituents of tyrannical monarchies. The notions of equality
and freedom, however, did not extend to all of America s population;... Show more content on

Furthermore, in 1846, Horace Mann, a Whig politician and education reformist asserted that a
superior and universal law had dictated every human being, regardless of race or gender,
deserved access to education and that it was the obligation of government to provide this (Doc 3).
Horace Mann, regarded as the most devoted education reformist and a respected Whig, could or
did not pass any national legislation to spread universal education. Additionally, during the
Antebellum era, there were 2 whig presidents, Harrison and Taylor, and Whigs dominated both
congressional houses during their presidencies; so education reform should have passed easily. In
reality, Mann s narrative of universal education for the purposes of creating a culture of virtuous
principles was not fulfilled during the Antebellum era. Apparently, many reformists believed more
in promoting a virtuous image of the U.S. than in pursuing laws to cement reforms. In 1841 Ralph
Waldo Emerson lectured a Library association of Mechanic s apprentices that What is a man born
for but to be a Reformer... a renouncer of lies; a restorer of truth and good, imitating that great
Nature... (Doc 2). Emerson, a 2nd Great Awakening lecturer emphasizes the goodness that results
from reforms, a minor distinction from democratic ideals. Emerson does not mention equality or
freedom as suitable motivations for reformists, rather, he emphasized reforming because it makes
the reformer appear virtuous. As a prominent speaker, Emerson convinces that the primary concern
of the apprentices in his audience is their self image, not spreading suffrage, liberty or equality

Sonnet
The Spenserian Sonnet was named for Edmund Spenser 1552 1599, a 16th century English Poet.
The Spenserian Sonnet inherited the tradition of the declamatory couplet of Wyatt / Surrey
although Spenser used Sicilian quatrains to develop a metaphor, conflict, idea or question logically,
with the declamatory couplet resolving it.
Beyond the prerequisite for all sonnets, the defining features of the Spenserian Sonnet are: a
quatorzain made up of 3 Sicilian quatrains (4 lines alternating rhyme) and ending in a rhyming
couplet metric, primarily iambic pentameter. rhymed, rhyme scheme ababbcbccdcdee. composed
with a volta (a non physical gap) or pivot (a shifting or tilting of the main line of thought) sometime
after the 2nd quatrain. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus, while the sonnet finally celebrates America s victory on Manila bay, that extreme joy is yet
destroyed by the first eight verses that shows our fighting spirit though our troubled history has
only lacked its brightness(dimmed).
Perhaps, it should have been sunset over Manila bay because foreigners often enjoy its view during
sunset, but the poet chose moonlight, not because it is more romantic(dramatic effect) but because,
as the poem suggests, it is under cover of darkness that foreigners stole our country from us The
deep s bare bosom that the breeze molests is a metaphor for American colonization.
So in our reading now, we understand that Maramag s insistence on our own scene so fair in fact
becomes a chief motive and inspiration for the Filipino poet. For his own scene is nothing less
than his lost country whose physical and spiritual geography it is his task to imagine and so
rediscover. There is still hope to heal all the wounds
A literary technique (also known as literary device) is any method an author uses to convey their
message.[1] This distinguishes them from literary elements, which exist inherently in literature.

Taking a Look at Conflict Resolution
To manage these conflict styles; avoidance, accommodation, aggression, and collaboration
management styles are used. Roommates use these styles when dealing with conflict. The style
they choose relates to how they will use text messaging in conflict and how they would like their
face to be perceived by the individual involved in the conflict. When a roommate chooses
avoidance they are pretending the conflict does not exist and will avoid any form of communication
for fear of their face being perceived negatively. We see an explanation of this from Erving
Goffman where he proposed an idea of facework as a social performance where we are all actors.
He offered a cooperative principle where people agree to support each other s performance or face.
To not support each other s face is to disrupt the entire scene, because no one can continue in
performance when others are embarrassed or shamed (Cupach Metts, 1994). Based on the conflict
modes of Thomas and Kilmann, there are five styles of conflict management: avoiding,
accommodating, collaborating, competing and compromising. Accommodation happens when a
person attempts to satisfy the other person s concerns at the expense of their own, Avoiding is
where a person sidesteps the conflict without trying to satisfy either person s concern,
Compromising is when the person partially satisfies both people s concerns, Collaborating is when
a person tries to find a win win solution that satisfies both people s concerns, and Competing

World War I Was A War
World War I was a war fought between the Allies and the Central Powers in 1914 through 1918.
This was the first international war in the twentieth century and possibly the most deadliest war
since. Every country was bringing out their finest advanced weaponry and their most strategic
methods to succeed. All of the new advanced weaponry and strategies had a huge impact on the
way the war was fought. The soldiers entered the war with horses and simple rifles, but left the war
with tanks, flamethrowers, machine guns, and even technology like poisonous gas. With all this
new technology impacting World War I, the Allies and Central Powers had to create new strategies

The first, the front line trench (or firing and attack trench), was located from 50 yards to 1 mile
from the German s front trench. Several hundred yards behind the front line trench was the support
trench, with men and supplies that could immediately assist those on the front line. The reserve
trench was dug several hundred yards further back and contained men and supplies that were
available in emergencies should the first trenches be overrun. (Bagget and Jay)
Germans also took advantage of trenches and created multiple types of trenches to help them win
the war. They were ready for any attack/possibility of invasion and were trying to use trenches as
strategically as they could. Trenches would cause damage to nature and the area around it.
Imagine how after the war with trenches, there would be multiple tunnels just engraved in the
ground and it would of destroyed all the life in that soil and around it. During the war, the sides
would use artillery on each other s trenches so they had to keep on expanding their trenches and
making new ones. The artillery would further destruction and cause many craters around the
trenches. The way trenches would cause people to get sick was probably not a concern to the
forces when creating them. Think about what would happen if soldiers had to sleep and stay in
muddy, wet, and dirty trenches twenty four seven. When their clothes got wet they wouldn t have
always have spare uniforms and they would have to fight with

Over Many Years, Lois Lowry S Novels Have Been Analyzed
Over many years, Lois Lowry s novels have been analyzed by many. Lowry is known for
grasping measures of social control and taking them a step further. While some, such as Lucas
Kavner (2012) and Carter F. Hanson (2009) declare their acclamation for her out of the box writing
technique, scholars and Utopian studies, such as Lyman Tower Sargent (1988), Tom Moylan
(2014), and Fredric Jameson (1998), place emphasis on the contradiction that dystopia has on
nature.
One could only dream of a world without discrimination. In a world with no differences shown
hatred, crime, and civil disputes would be something unheard of. Popular, fame, winner and loser

Intelligence , Integrity , Courage , Wisdom , and the Capacity to See Beyond. (Lowry, 1993, p. 62
63).
The Receiver of Memory is the one person in the community who stores all the past memories of
the time before Sameness. The position of Receiver of Memory is important because there may
be times where one must use the wisdom gained from history to aid the community s decision
making; guidance in the present using memories in the past. (Noyce, Koenigsberg, Silver, 2014).
The figurative community Lowry writes of lacks any color, memory, climate, or understanding of
their territory, all in an effort to uphold structural order and a true sense of equality beyond
personal individuality. Our people made that choice, the choice to go to Sameness. Before my
time, before the previous time, back and back and back. We relinquished color when we
relinquished sunshine and did away with differences. He thought for a moment. We gained control
of many things. But we had to let go of others. (Lowry, 1993, p. 95)
Though some scholars do not agree with the writing techniques of Lois Lowry, I argue that Lowry is
an amazing and independent writer. I find Lowry s writing to be very fascinating and somewhat
truthful in the real world even though these are fiction novels. While Lowry writes of these
innovative places, she uses symbolism which connects the character s world to our own world.

The Reintroduction of the Gray Wolf to Yellowstone Essay
The Reintroduction of the Gray Wolf to Yellowstone
Gauss Law states that no two organisms can occupy the same ecological niche without excluding
the other, but what happens when man gets involved with nature and tries to introduce a species
where it doesn t belong which in turn provides a second organism to fill the same niche as the first?
The results of human intervention have often been disastrous for the organism that we re
supposedly helping. Humans often times do not understand the complexity of the implications that
are caused directly through our intervention. In 1974, the gray wolf was listed on the Endangered
Species List, and in an effort to reestablish their populations, wolves were re introduced into

Since the introduction of the wolves, 300 sheep, 66 cattle, 1 horse, and 20 dogs have been killed
by these predators, and to call them anything else would be wrong.
When the wolves were first reintroduced, having 30 equally distributed breeding pairs was
enough to constitute a success. A breeding pair is defined as an adult male and female wolf
raising two or more pups in a year, where the pups are born between April and May and then
raised till December 31. With the reintroduction of the gray wolf, a recovery population goal had
to be established. That was the goal of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) for
the recovery of the wolf population for the northern Rocky Mountains. Wolf numbers needed to be
maintained at this level for at least three consecutive years. According to the USFWS 2002 was the
third year where there had been at least 30 breeding pairs throughout Wyoming, Montana, and
Idaho. After 2002, these wolves are still multiplying and the population continues to soar, even at
this very moment.
In the Greater Yellowstone area, the target goal was to maintain 15 wolf packs in the state of
Wyoming, seven of these packs residing outside the area of national parks. Mission accomplished.
As of December 2002, there were 22 documented packs in the state of Wyoming. Eight of the
twenty two are living outside the boundaries of national parks, yet the

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Truly there would be reason to go mad were it not for music. (― Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky) Pyotr
Ilyich Tchaikovsky used music as an escape, crafting wondrous melodies to entice the heart and
mind out of its worldly miseries and into the land where musical delight reigned supreme. His
life lay troubled, and music became his refuge. As a result, he spent copious time dedicated to
developing his musical talent and composed the worlds of fantastic delights in which, as he
states, he truly lived. His wildly prolific music graced the ears and eyes of many, drawn into his
finely crafted masterpieces of Russia lore. To further understand Tchaikovsky s influence, we will

Petersburg Conservatory, as one of their first composition students. Upon graduation, he moved
to Moscow, where he became a professor of harmony at the Moscow Conservatory. In 1875,
acclaim came readily for Tchaikovsky as he embarked on a tour of Europe. During this time he
published his most famous ballets, including Swan Lake and the fantasy Francesca da Rimini.
Tchaikovsky displayed an unusually wide stylistic and emotional range, from salon works of
innocuous charm to symphonies and operas of tremendous depth, power and grandeur. As a
Romantic composer, he emulated the emotionality of the period, drawing out long, heart felt
performances from the folk and native stories and legends of his homeland. Pyotr Tchaikovsky s
first publicly performed work Characteristic Dances was conducted by Johann Strauss the Younger
in 1865, at a Pavlovsk concert. In total Tchaikovsky published 169 pieces of music, including
operas, symphonies, ballets, cantatas, concertos, and fantasias. March 1884, Tchaikovsky received
an official statement from the current Tsar, highlighting his work as a Russian composer and
pushing to him the title of the Father of Russian Romanticism . His works influenced several
famous Russian composers, including Stravinsky, and Rachmaninov, and composers of other
nationalities as well, such as, Richard Strauss, George Mahler, and Jean Sibelius. His ballets and
operas are still performed around the world and his name lives

The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber by Ernest...
It is the mainstay of many pieces of classic American literature, especially those that fall into the
category of pulp , to have thin, cardboard cutout characters with obvious emotions and intentions
for which their only purpose is to drive the story to a predetermined end. The seductive and

well, to keep out of others. He does a commendable job of trying to help Francis forget about his
blunder against the lion, and remove strain in situations involving both Mr. and Mrs. Macomber.
He is a diplomat, though as the story will prove, not a very consistent one. He holds a lukewarm
contempt for women, especially American women, whom he deems cruel (and perhaps, once
we look at Margot, this is not without merit). He is socially introverted, and as so tries to keep
away from the personal affairs of the Macombers, but in the end fails and sleeps with Margot
Macomber after her many flirtations and a late night seduction in his tent. Wilson is strikes as a
person of regret and self abasement. He seems to truly love what he does, hunting for sport, but is

Due to Marian s attitude, the reader understands Ainsley s actions as a performance and a
construction. Considering Ainsley to be authentically feminine, Len is attracted to her. Atwood
through Ainsley illustrates how easily gender can be performed to look real, which in effect
demonstrates its constructedness, as there is no such thing as real gender. Atwood besides shows
the different ways gender can be interpreted Marian calls Ainsley s performance a fraud, whereas
Peter is amused but suspicious, and Len is absolutely occupied by her assumed authenticity.
Although Butler highlights the fact that gender is performative, nevertheless, she does not mean to
say that a subject is able to take on gender. The essential part of Butler s theory is that
performativity exists within a highly rigid regulatory frame meaning that it is the expectations and
assumptions of discourse that enable gender s performativity, not subjects themselves (Gender 43

performance to the patriarchal expectations that inform this regulatory frame she dresses as a
young and inexperienced girl not only because she chooses to, but also the regulatory expectations
demand this type of performance from her specially, Len (Fleitz

British Imperialism In Nigeria
British Imperialism in Nigeria
The British empire began in 16th century and lasted until around 1997. During this time Great
Britain controlled a lot of the World s land and population. Britain had immense power and used
it for their own dominance. They wanted to spread their ideology and culture to other
societies.Britain was imperializing many parts of the World. Imperialism occurs when a strong
nation takes over a weaker nation or region and dominates its economic, political, and cultural
life ( Boisestate.edu).For Britain, this process was strengthening their nation as a whole so they
began to really expand their outreach. After WWI Britain really started a long period of ruling.
During this period, Europe s powers added nearly nine million square miles (23,000,000 square
kilometers) to their overseas colonial possessions. As it was mostly unoccupied by the Western
powers as late as the 1880s, Africa became the primary target of the new imperialist expansion,
although conquest took place also in other areas notably Southeast Asia and the East Asian
seaboard, where Japan joined the European powers scramble for territory (New World 1). They
were many countries involved in British imperialism however, one of the most prominent and well
known country was Nigeria. Nigeria was a huge gain for Britain because Nigeria had access to an
abundance of natural resources and also was a post for the slave trade that Britain was heavily
apart of at the time. There were many ways that British imperialism affected Nigeria, some being
positive and some being negative, the country dealt with them and learned from every aspect of
the situations trying to become a better and stronger country for their own sake. In this paper
websites played a large role in the research. I found that websites helped a lot because I was able
to find a lot of information on my topic in a quick amount of time. Also, living in Oklahoma it
would be hard to find a decent amount of information on the British and their rule over Nigeria.
Databases were another online resource I used to find an abundance of facts in a short time. Many
of the Databases were approved by the school so the information was very reliable and exact.

How Did World War 1 Change European Society
I do not think World War I came completely by surprise. The nations of Europe were forming
alliances, mainly two camps, allied powers and triple alliances, were challenging each other for
economic, military and imperial gains before the shots were fired of First World War. European
states of the time and even the population and their politicians filled with nationalist pride and
wanted to show off how far they have improved their armies and modern technologies that came
with the second industrial revolution. I think the military leaders of the time wanted to test these
new revolutionary machines and modern weapons in the battle field. It changed our world
radically. These mechanized war machines were so effective; twenty one thousand British soldiers
died on the first day of the battle of the Somme.
The trigger for the war, was the assassination of the Austrian Arch Duke in Sarajevo, but in reality,
it was just the precursor towards the war. Citizens of these European states captivated by
nationalistic pride and feeling that the war would be over in couple of months ... Show more content

  • 2. John Brown Crimes John Brown s actions at Pottawatomie Creek and Harper s Ferry can be seen as acts of terrorism by a person or peoples opinion, but a closer study of modern and historic violent actions show he was a freedom fighter. Certainly, this is factual because there is no actual definition of terrorism, it is simply an opinion on someone s actions. Therefore, it is almost irrelevant for one be convicted a terrorist if no one can actually have a justified reasoning behind their choices. Some may say Brown s childhood had a major impact on some of his violent actions that occurred later on in his life. When he was very young, he suffered the loss of his mother. As a result it began to harvest a bit of rage in his heart that would soon turn into a never ending spiral of rage. It wasn t long after this loss that Brown witnessed a slave being beaten. It was that moment that Brown began to pursue his goal of ending slavery. Brown made many violent attacks through his long attempt to end slavery. One of Brown s rather horrific attacks was the murder of five pro slavery settlers in the Pottawatomie Creek. It was once stated that brown did this act of violence out of rage, and it ... Whitman describes world as heaven and Ginsberg describes live as dark and evil. Where Whitman is less harsh and Ginsberg is very harsh. Also, Ginsberg uses a raw language to describe the world in a deeper perspective. In Song of Myself, Whitman describes the world as a hopeful place in which a lot can be done. Ginsberg replies to this as if they have committed suicide they should be honored and given the status of a hero for such bravery. Ginsberg way of discussing suicide is more intense than Whitman s. Ginsberg definition of suicide is the resort of pain and suffering and that leads to being honored because it takes a lot of will to go through the agony. • 7. The Invention Of The Steam Engine Steam Engine The invention of the steam engine served as a vital building block to the success of the first Industrial Revolution. At first steam engines harnessed the power of coal to streamline the manufacturing process. The invention led to the creation of mills and factories that were once filled with manual labors. Meanwhile ships and trains fueled by steam engines soon moved manufactured goods and people more efficiently than horse and buggy. The improved engines were soon used in every industry from agriculture to textile production. In the textile industry it allowed for faster and more efficient production without the threat of human error. By the end of its illustrious run, steam power was instrumental in the development of waterways and railroad systems that led the Industrial Revolution. At the time though, the world feared industrial use of steam power would soon lead to greater joblessness, replacing hard physical work and animal force that powered many industries. The Luddites, in particular, protested that machine and automations would make humans redundant, however after the steam engine replaced water wheels as a power source in manufacturing, employment expanded from 1.2 million jobs in 1830 to 8.3 million by 1910. The overall success of steam technology led to many new innovations and effectively its own demise Internal Combustion System At around the same time, scientists were working on a new engine powered by diesel fuel or gasoline. Alcoholic beverages are divided into three general classes: beers, wines, and spirits (or distilled beverage). They are legally consumed in most countries, and over 100 countries have laws regulating their production, sale, and consumption.[1] In particular, such laws specify the minimum age at which a person may legally buy or drink them. This minimum age varies between 16 and 25 years, depending upon the country and the type of drink. Most nations set it at 18 years of age.[1] The production and consumption of alcohol occurs in most cultures of the world, from hunter gatherer peoples to nation states.[2][3] Alcoholic beverages ... Isomerism caused much consternation to early researchers, since isomers have exact the same composition, but differ in configuration (arrangement) of the atoms. For example, there was much speculation for the chemical identity of benzene, until the correct structure was described by Friedrich August KekulГ©. Likewise, the idea of stereoisomerism that atoms have rigid three dimensional structure and can thus form isomers that differ only in their three dimensional arrangement was another crucial step in understanding the concept of distinct chemical substances. For example, tartaric acid has three distinct isomers, a pair of diastereomers with one diastereomer forming two enantiomers. chemical is a form of matter that has constant chemical composition and characteristic properties.[1] It cannot be separated into components by physical separation ... • 14. The State Of The Electoral College Tyranny naturally arises out of democracy. These words from the Greek philosopher Plato summarize the most fundamental concern of the delegates to the Constitutional Convention when they considered what the best way to conduct presidential elections would be. While, in concept, democracy sounds like the fairest form of government, in practice, it is less than ideal. Fear of tyranny of the majority prompted discussion over how the president should be elected. The Founders chose the Electoral Collegewhich incorporates democracy, federalism, and republicanism for presidential selection, because it provided for the best balance of power. While he agreed that the sense of the people should operate in the choice of the [president], he made clear the importance of afford[ing] as little opportunity as possible to tumult and disorder. This would require the will of the people to be tempered by an intermediate body of electors. Not only would this be a compromise between the competing ideas in the Constitutional Convention, it would prevent any one group from having undue discretion when it came to electing the most powerful person in government. Of these competing ideas, two are prominently reflected in the Electoral College. The first is democracy, an idea largely advanced by Alexis de Tocqueville in Democracy in America. Democracy, loosely defined as the direct representation of people in government, seems the most logical way to conduct an election. The second is federalism. Understanding how this could become problematic, the founders decided to include states in the election process. According to Federalist 68, this would allow the people of each State [to] choose a number of persons as electors...who shall assemble...and vote for some fit person as President. This balance of individual and state discretion would soon be codified in Article 2, Section 1 of the Constitution. The Electoral College has remained steadfast in our ever changing world. What ... • 15. Summary Of The Song Landslide Landslide, by Fleetwood Mac, is written to show how the removal of a loved one can impact someone s life negatively or positively. The theme of the song can be found in several lyric such as, Well, I ve been afraid of changin, cause I ve built my life around you (Fleetwood Mac). It is said that if a couple thinks that their relationship is not going to work out, it can tumble over at any time. The effects of shouting out and going for help may seem like a good idea, but it will just bring down the avalanche right on top of the situation and collapse everything in. In Perks of Being a Wallflower, Charlie experiences a loss of a close friend (Michael) to a suicide. It is said that these lyrics show the security and satisfaction after shooting up with heroin. The idea of drugs and sex is messed up but nothing can entertain a group of young teens. People are trying to introduce this idea of heroin as an idea that is better than sex, which is almost all that someone can say after shooting up too many times. • 16. Traditional Methods Of Managing Personal Income There are three traditional methods of managing personal income. 1. Budgeting, 2. Keeping a spending history, and 3. Doing nothing (also known as living from paycheck to paycheck). Budgeting involves setting what percent of future income is to be spent on which categories of expenses, and then recording all purchases in order to track how well spending is staying within the predefined limits. The process sounds very simple, however, it is difficult, in my opinion, to stick with a budget for very long. The energy and dedication needed to keep track of where the money goes is tremendous. I ve tried budgeting on several occasions and failed miserably because I couldn t stomach keeping track of every penny I spent. Traditional budgets also tend to fail because the setting of rigid spending limits does not lend itself well to being flexible. When unforeseen expenses pop up, a budget can be rendered useless very quickly. It s my experience that budgets can feel like monetary straight jackets that are soon abandoned. Spending Histories A Vicious Cycle Keeping a spending history also involves the recording of every penny spent. The intent is to use the spending history as a basis for identifying spending habits that can be improved and then making needed changes to future spending patterns. The main weakness of keeping a spending history is that it is focused on past activity and, therefore, is of little help when a person is trying to make immediate decisions about ... Even though the average consumer can t possibly think how these stores are able to keep up and manage the sudden changes in culture the community brings, they do know that each day in a store brings new products and different arrangements throughout the store to fit the consumer s needs. Specifically enough, each store creates an image for themselves that exemplifies the culture and shows us something about the times we live in at that moment. • 20. An Emotional Connection Made with Audi Commercial Essay Audi, the maker of elite model cars, designed an advertising campaign for the 2013 Super Bowl that claimed driving an Audi would allow the owner to feel more daring. The advertisement opens up with a high school senior boy wearing a tux, with his mother pinning his boutonniere to his jacket. The boy clearly looks unenthused about going to prombecause he does not have a date to the prom, which his mother attempts to sooth him by saying that there are many people who go to the prom without dates. With this advertisement, the Audi S6 is that object that provides the young man the courage to kiss the prom queen and park in the principal s parking spot. The car provided the young man the sense of security to tackle his inner demons and carry out his desires with no regrets. The Audi instills this sense of sophistication and authority within the young boy and that because he drove an Audi, the opportunity to be brave clearly outweighed the consequences of his defiance, as demonstrated at the end of the commercial as he was driving with a black eye after being beaten up for kissing the prom queen. The Prom commercial has a logical appeal. By creating the relatable story of an awkward and dateless young man on his prom night, Audi was able to make an emotional connection with its audience. Their slogan, Bravery. It s what defines us. , permits a logical appeal that if an Audi can allow that young boy to be brave, than an Audi can evoke that sense of bravery within them as well. If bravery defines a person, and an Audi defines bravery, than the car a person drives defines who that person is. Therefore, the logical claim that Audi is making is that the car a person drives defines them, and by driving an Audi, a person can be seen as classy, brave and sophisticated. In conclusion, Audi is trying to make the argument that owning an Audi is more than owning a car, owning an Audi is an experience that will instill a sense of class, pride and bravery. This ... Adolescence is stressful and confusing to say the least, and is a time in one s life where one begins to discover who they are and what they want as they transition into the adult world. In J.D. Salinger s classic American novel, The Catcher in the Rye, the main character Holden, is a downhearted teenage boy used by Salinger in order to portray universal themes to the reader including isolation, loss of innocence, and the phoniness of the adult world. Through Salinger s use of symbolism, the reader is able to ponder Holden and his struggles as he embarks into adulthood in order to come to a deeper understanding of the themes Salinger s symbols represent. One of the most widely recognized symbols of the book is Holden s curiosity about the ducks in Central Park. Holden longs for answers to his question of where the ducks go in the winter. The ducks. Do you know by any chance? I mean does somebody come around in a truck or something and take them away, or do they fly away by themselves go south or something? (107). As the ice freezes over the pond and winter comes, the ducks leave, able to escape the brutal winter and the ice for a more pleasant, warmer climate to the south. In 1965 organized labor was a close second to big government. Labor received 29% to big governments 35%. Organized labor as a threat steadily declined and by 1999 only 8% of the people viewed it as the biggest threat behind big business at 24% and big government at 65%. (Cornfield 1999) The declining view of big labor as a threat could explain the rising approval ratings. Actions are very important in telling what something or someone is like. Future actions can be estimated by someone s previous actions; actions usually reflect the character and personality of someone. Positive actions are almost always associated with a good hearted, positive person, and negative actions usually correspond with wretched, wicked, fearful, hateful, and negative people. Those ideas include the use of the outsiders to represent the old society, the use of the mechanical hound to represent the resistance to change, and the use of the atomic bomb to symbolize a new reality. However, these specific examples of representation within the novel are highlighted due to the fact that they together compose an allegory. Within the novel, three main societies are expressed through the representation of various groups or characters. An old society, a middle society, and a new society are all expressed in the book. The old society is allowed to read and possess literature. The middle society has banned literature in order to prevent anyone from being unhappy and disagreeing with it. This excerpt focuses on what Postman considers the dangerous faith of many in the field of education to engage in idolatry of technology. He goes on to support his argument that concludes that the improvements promised to us by technophiles working in educationare not forthcoming and will likely make things worse. Postman writes in this chapter a critique of the logical failings he observes in his contemporaries on how education should be improved. In disagreement with Postman s opinion I wish to highlight how he has failed to understand how interactive media is fundamentally different than previous media formats and that his focus on overzealous promises from bureaucrats has blinded him to the actual opportunities for real growth in education. One of his earliest points is to attack the optimistic vision of Dr. Diane Ravitch, the former Assistant US Secretary of Education (Postman, 38). He cites a piece she wrote that creates a fictitious child called Little Eva who elects to learn Algebra while dealing with a case of insomnia (Postman, 39). Postman claims that Ravitch s child is so different from any he has met on earth and that she must have come from mars (Postman, 39). Communism In George Orwell s Animal Farm Author George Orwell models a farm of animals after a class system that inevitably exists in which animals fall into stronger and weaker roles and ranks based on their position. In Animal Farm by George Orwell, the author allegorically utilizes the animals on the farm to deconstruct the class systems, and show the weaknesses of a communist government. Animal Farm by George Orwell allegorically embodies communism throughout the novel with the created concept of animalism. Introduced by one of the main characters Major, the first leader of the animals, when he brought about the plot of equality. During his most influential speech, Major says, I merely repeat, remember always your duty of enmity towards Man and all his ways. Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy. Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend. And remember also that in fighting against Man, we must not come to resemble him. Even when you have conquered him, do not adopt his vices. No animal must ever live in a house, or sleep in a bed, or wear clothes, or drink alcohol, or smoke tobacco, or touch money, or engage in trade. All the habits of Man are evil. And, above all, no animal must ever tyrannise over his own kind. Weak or strong, clever or simple, we are all brothers. No animal must ever kill any other animal. All animals are equal. (Orwell, 3) This monologue in the middle of chapter one, allows the reader to make a connection to communism from the beginning to allow for further understanding. Animalism and Communism share the aspect of equality amongst all citizens but in its roots, the idea is flawed in both mind and practice. As mentioned in an article by Occupy Theory, one of the greatest flaws with communism, and as seen in Animal Farm as a great obstacle, the lower class is unable to question the actions of their superiors, this amount of power tends to corrupt those who have it. The ruling class of communist nations tends to become quite greedy, since there is no way for the classes beneath them to gain insight into how their nation truly works . • 36. To Kill A Mockingbird Analysis To Kill A Mockingbird takes place during the 1930 s, a time of intense racial inequity and prejudice. Harper Lee intends for the novel to display the harsh reality to the real world, and exhibit how life and society were really like during this period in history. Humanity s views and morals have shown little sign of ever being able to accept change or difference as seen in particular issues such as racism, discrimination, sexism, prejudice etc. Whilst reading the novel, readers can identify these well known problems and maybe even relate to some of the ideas that Lee is portraying. Lee uses symbols to effectively communicate and express her thoughts and opinions on the various themes of the book. Moreover, these symbols are able to tap into the subconscious mind to implement ideas that can be analyzed in order to understand their relevance to not only the plot line and major theme topics of the novel: appearance versus reality, conscience and integrity, and loss of innocence, but also to modern society. At first glance, Maycomb appears to be a quaint, peaceful town. Lee later proves this to be a common misconception made by outsiders. Throughout the novel, we come to learn the true nature and life of Maycomb. Underneath the picture perfect image, there is a disease spreading, infiltrating and infecting the minds of Maycomb. • 37. The Pros And Cons Of Animal Experimentation Animal experimentation has been a controversial subject for decades. Millions of animals have been killed in United States laboratories for biology lessons, medical training, curiosity driven experiments, and chemical, drug, food, and cosmetics testing. Animal experimentation has proven to be an imprecise way of research and practices in animal cruelty. There are alternatives to animal testingthat have been proven more accurate, but because of tradition these alternatives are overlooked by many. The three R s of animal testing, reduction, refinement, and replacement, should be implemented. The testing of animals does not have enough beneficial results to deem it necessary. Many drugs proven safe for animals have been proven harmful to humans in human trials. In order to make experimentation more accurate, scientists should rely on human cells and carefully conducted clinical trials with humans (as cited in Thomas, 2009, p. 95). Stop Animal Experimentation Animal experimentation has become a very controversial subject since the development of more advanced technology. Estimates of the number of animals used each year for experiments in United States laboratories range from seventeen to seventy million (as cited in Animal Friends Croatia , 2009, p. 15). Animal experimentation, which is also known as animal testing, is experiments that use non human animals that seek to control the variables that affect the behavior or biological system under study. • 38. Wireless Networks Can Be Broadly Classified Into Three... Wireless Networks can be broadly classified into three categories: Infrastructure based networks, Wireless LANs and Ad Hoc Networks. Infrastructure based networks are traditional cellular systems which require base station infrastructure. Wireless LANs are very flexible within the reception area. It requires low bandwidth when compared to wired networks. Ad Hoc networks are useful when the infrastructure is not available, impractical or expensive to build. In Cellular Wireless, spaces are divided into cells. Each cell consists of base stations which is responsible to communicate with the hosts in its cell. Hosts moves from one cell to cell to another and hand off occurs, the new base station takes care of the communication. In Multi hop wireless, mobility causes a change of route. Hence it need to traverse multiple links to reach destination. Ad hoc network is a self organizing multi hop wireless network, which relies neither on infrastructure nor on the predetermined connectivity. Rapid deployment of mobile users will be the need for the next generation wireless communication systems. A mobile ad hoc network is a collection of mobile users that communicate over constrained wireless links with lower bandwidth. Network scenarios which include establishing dynamic communication for emergency/rescue operations, survivable, efficient, disaster relief efforts and military networks cannot rely on organized and centralized connectivity. • 39. Analysis Of All That Heaven Allows The development and implementation of 3D in popular cinema shares many similarities with the introduction of color into films. If we examine the histories of both technologies, Moana s color analogue is Douglas Sirk s melodrama All That Heaven Allows. In terms of timeline, both come at a point when the art form is still in between the astonishment and absorption phases of using the technology. Though All That Heaven Allows was made around fifteen years after the first technicolorfilms, the movie is still designed to have the audience notice its beautifully colored shots. Most of the films landscapes feel oversaturated and doctored. These exterior shots often feel more like paintings to appreciate rather than providing context for the film s interior shots. At the same time, color doesn t define the story and characters in the same way as early Technicolor films like Michael Curtiz s The Adventures of Robin Hood. In those instances color acted as a constant signal of where we were in the narrative, and formed strong associations between characters and individual colors. In All That Heaven Allows, the color schemes don t drastically change to suit the narrative, but they re still far from fading into the background. Sirk uses color more as an emotional cue, nudging the audience into feeling the drama of the film. Ultimately, All That Heaven Allows is a film made in the liminal period between astonishment and absorption of color. Moana uses 3D in a similar manner to All That Heaven Allows, as a noticeable but ultimately auxiliary narrative tool. In earlier digital 3D films, negative and positive parallax were used to create discrete new worlds. Avatar and Coraline were crafted to feel entirely different when the protagonists ventured into a different environment, similar to the color phases of Robin Hood. Moana, on the other hand, uses 3D in a way that pervades the entire film. Rather than build new worlds, Moana uses 3D for the emotional effect, bringing characters and objects towards and away from the audience to make us feel. Though the purpose of the film is not to showcase 3D technology, we can t help but notice stuff flying at us during dynamic sequences like How Far I ll Go. Rather than switching ... In 1776, the American Colonies proclaimed independence with the affirmation that all men are equal, free, and blessed with the sacred rights to life, liberty, and happiness. These uniquely American ideals ideals characterized the young democracy in contrast to the oppressive monarchies of Europe. European citizens saw the correlation between America s greatness and its democratic principles. Furthermore, in 1846, Horace Mann, a Whig politician and education reformist asserted that a superior and universal law had dictated every human being, regardless of race or gender, deserved access to education and that it was the obligation of government to provide this (Doc 3). Horace Mann, regarded as the most devoted education reformist and a respected Whig, could or did not pass any national legislation to spread universal education. Additionally, during the Antebellum era, there were 2 whig presidents, Harrison and Taylor, and Whigs dominated both congressional houses during their presidencies; so education reform should have passed easily. In reality, Mann s narrative of universal education for the purposes of creating a culture of virtuous principles was not fulfilled during the Antebellum era. Apparently, many reformists believed more in promoting a virtuous image of the U.S. than in pursuing laws to cement reforms. In 1841 Ralph Waldo Emerson lectured a Library association of Mechanic s apprentices that What is a man born for but to be a Reformer... a renouncer of lies; a restorer of truth and good, imitating that great Nature... • 43. Taking a Look at Conflict Resolution To manage these conflict styles; avoidance, accommodation, aggression, and collaboration management styles are used. Roommates use these styles when dealing with conflict. The style they choose relates to how they will use text messaging in conflict and how they would like their face to be perceived by the individual involved in the conflict. When a roommate chooses avoidance they are pretending the conflict does not exist and will avoid any form of communication for fear of their face being perceived negatively. We see an explanation of this from Erving Goffman where he proposed an idea of facework as a social performance where we are all actors. He offered a cooperative principle where people agree to support each other s performance or face. To not support each other s face is to disrupt the entire scene, because no one can continue in performance when others are embarrassed or shamed (Cupach Metts, 1994). Based on the conflict modes of Thomas and Kilmann, there are five styles of conflict management: avoiding, accommodating, collaborating, competing and compromising. Accommodation happens when a person attempts to satisfy the other person s concerns at the expense of their own, Avoiding is where a person sidesteps the conflict without trying to satisfy either person s concern, Compromising is when the person partially satisfies both people s concerns, Collaborating is when a person tries to find a win win solution that satisfies both people s concerns, and Competing ... Imperialism occurs when a strong nation takes over a weaker nation or region and dominates its economic, political, and cultural life ( Boisestate.edu).For Britain, this process was strengthening their nation as a whole so they began to really expand their outreach. After WWI Britain really started a long period of ruling. As it was mostly unoccupied by the Western powers as late as the 1880s, Africa became the primary target of the new imperialist expansion, although conquest took place also in other areas notably Southeast Asia and the East Asian seaboard, where Japan joined the European powers scramble for territory (New World 1).
