Interaction between Political and Social Life in Ancient Imperial Rome
The interaction between political and social life in Ancient Rome has been accurately portrayed in
the well researched novel, The Course of Honour , by Lindsey Davies. However as this is a
fictional novel told as an interesting story instead of fact, the information given must be
corroborated with several primary sources to correct any inherent biases.
Lindsey Davies is an author who specialises in writing about life in Ancient Rome. Her novels are
famous for the detective work of Marcus Didius Falco, with books such as Last Act in Palmyra ,
Venus in Copper , A Dying Light in Corduba and The Iron Hands of Mars winning her the
Sherlock Holmes Award for... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

But when Vespasian, in the course of his general triumph, restored stable government to Britain...
(Tacitus, p.68)
As well as being a strong source of information about political life during this time, the novel also
catalogues the struggles faced before and after marriage by Vespasians mistress, the
freedwoman Caenis. Their forbidden relationship is threatened as Vespasian reaches the height
of his political career. Caenis was but a footnote mentioned in history which Davies has
sanctified into a wonder woman without whom Vespasians career could not have possibly
succeeded. This obvious glorification of a story is an example of a bias used to make a tale
more interesting, and the lack of historical sources commenting on Caenis only proves that she is
nowhere near as important as Davis makes her out to be. Regardless, this novel achieves its aim as
an interesting secondary source of information on Imperial Rome from two totally different
perspectives that of a slave and freedwoman, and that of an emperor. It showcases very suitably
both the social and political struggles which are faced in upkeeping this unlikely relationship.
There are different viewpoints on the way slaves were treated in Imperial Rome. Caenis in the
story is first portrayed as a faithful and respectful slave, claiming I know how to keep my mouth
shut, any sensible slave does! (Davies, p.17) This restricted form of life is backed up by this quote

Victimization of Minor Characters in Laura Esquivel s...
In a novel, minor characters are never the focus of the plot. Minor characters are present in a novel
to affect the major characters and help the character development of the major characters. Minor
characters influence the major characters in many ways. One of these ways of supporting the major
characters, is the victimization of the minor characters. Two excellent examples of minor characters
that impact the major characters of the novels due to the minor characters being victimized is
Nacha in Like Water for Chocolateby Laura Esquivel and Monica in Silence by Shusaku Endo.

Monica offered Father Rodrigues a cucumber, showing her respect for him by giving him what
little food she had to offer. From this small yet generous offer made by Monica, Father Rodrigues
reflected on his mission to Japan.
Since coming to this country, he reflected, he had caused nothing but hardship to these poor
Christians, and he nibbled at the cucumber with his front teeth. He had received from them the
little hut in which he had dwelt, they had given him the clothing he now wore, he had eaten their
food. Now it was his turn to give them something. But what could he give? The only thing he had
to offer was his life and his death (Endo 81).
Monica was already malnourished, yet she selflessly offered her only food to Father Rodrigues, a
man she had never encountered before. This was huge to Father Rodrigues and it made him
question what he can do to help her in return. Monica?s impact and the victimization made Father
Rodrigues question whether or not his coming to Japan really worth it or not. He realized that he
had only created more hardships for the Christian peasants that he had encountered throughout
Japan. However, at the same time, Father Rodrigues also realized that many of the Christians
looked up to him and were thankful that Father Rodrigues would try to come and help them.
Monica, through her being victimized, helped Father Rodrigues decide his fate in the end, dying as
a martyr, or living and trying to resurrect a

Homeless And Non Homeless Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual
The study examined two groups, homeless and non homeless Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual (LGB)
youths (Rosario, Schrimshaw, Hunter, 2012). There were a total of 156 participants between the
ages of 14 and 21 years with a mean age of 18.3 years. Participants were recruited from community
based organizations, which focused on youths and two college organizations of LGB students.
Researchers wanted to explore potential risk factors associated with the reason some LGB youths
become homeless, while others do not. The risk factors included experiencing sexual abuse,
negative responses from others based on one s sexual orientation, unbearable stress for the parent
or youth, and substance abuse. All of which are reasons one may run away from home and
become homeless. Lastly, researcher s hypothesized non homeless youth are less likely than
homeless youths to be involved in sexual abuse and early sexual identity development as it pertains
to LGB (Rosario et al., 2012).
The results revealed 75 of the 156 youths reported being homeless at some point, 57 had a history
of running away, 38 were evicted from their parent s home; 20 youths experienced both running
away and eviction (Rosario et al., 2012). From the 57 youths with a history of running away, 23
reported running away once and 14 more than one time. In relation to sexual orientation 13 youths
who ran away, and 12 youths who were evicted reported identifying as LGB as the reason for
becoming homeless. Researchers then combined the

Strikers Played A More Transformative Role During The...
Strikers played a more transformative role during the progressive era. The strikers were the face
of grievances facing workers. They gathered and fought for the rights they thought they deserved.
They were able to accomplish demands that had plagued their lives for years. Without the use of
striking or unionized assemblies, a push for rights would have been lost in the aggressive and
influential employers. The reformers and push to give workers rights came about from the loud
voice of strikes. The AnthraciteIndustry is one such unionized group that transformed the work of
miners. The Shirtwaist factory workers is another group of strikers that helps prove that strikers
played a more transformative role. These two groups embody the spirit of transformation towards a
better working life. Anthracite coalmining consisted of differing levels of skill and precision that
could be lucrative depending upon the miner s luck. A coal miner would be lucky to find steady
employment, or to even survive to the day s end. The procedures involved in preparing the coal
from the mines to the shipping was filled with dangers that led the industry as one of the world s
most hazardous. Mine owners to maintain overhead costs and keep mine workers in the industry,
would tactfully engage in underemployment. This left workers in state of constant need for more
work, or higher wages to offset working part time. These Anthracite miners were largely paid more
than the average miner, but

Comparing Christianity And Hinduism
Rites of passage within are crucial within culture and religion. Rites of passage help individuals
negotiate the transition from one state of being to another and provide an opportunity for the
community to express and celebrate its solidarity. In Christianity and Hinduism, ceremonies which
commemorate life s stages are called sacraments; in Hinduism, these are called saб№ѓskДЃras.
Sacraments are the visual aspect of invisible faith and are and expression of devotion to one s
religion. In both Christianityand Hinduism, people live their lives with respect to their religion s
rules, with the aim of reaching salvation or enlightenment respectively. Though these faiths are

This is an affirmation of the Faith one was inducted into at baptism and confession and committing
oneself formally to Christianity and devoting one s life to God. Those confirmed are recognized as
fully responsible members of the Church.
The sacrament of matrimony binds two people together as one. Marriage in the Christian religion
takes place in a church and is conducted by a priest. The couple makes vows to each other and God
and is a lifelong commitment.
Anointing of the Sick was once referred to as Extreme Unction. This sacrament previously was
only performed on those who were dying. Roman Catholics not only use this prayer and ritual to
help prepare a person for his or her death, but also to help a person regain health: mentally,
physically, or emotionally. Along with extreme unction, priests administer last rites, which gives the
dying the chance to confess once more. Anointing of the sick and the sacrament of confession are
called the Sacraments of Healing.
Holy Orders, or Ordination, occurs when a new priest is confirmed in an ordination ceremony. The
bishop preforms the ceremony and presents the priest with symbols of his new position, such as a
Bible. This sacrament inducts men into the clergy, passing on of the authority of the

Racism Vs Football Racism
This season in the NFL has been one of the more politically and racially driven seasons that we ve
seen in a very long time.
From President Donald Trump calling NFL players S.O.B s at a rally in Huntsville, Ala., to
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones taking a stance that if any players disrespect the flag or
national anthem they won t play, and finally players speaking out across the league on racial
injustice and oppression.
It truly ignited a conversation in the United States on both sides of the aisle.
But how did we get to this point? To answer that question, we have to look at former San
Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick who did not stand before a preseason game in 2016
and explained why he did it.

How do they feel about the situation? Are they boycotting the league? Or are they continuing to
watch, but still believe in the overall message of Kaepernick s stance?
If you ask college student Conner Watson, who follows both the New England Patriotsand
Philadelphia Eagles, he is boycotting the league and felt that something needed to be done.
After seeing what happened to Colin Kaepernick, I knew I had to do something. I was so moved
by what he did, as well as several conversations with my sister regarding activism, I couldn t give
my viewership to the NFL this season, he said.
Watson also explained what steps he has taken to boycott the league from monetary discussion to
just regular football talk with friends.
I am boycotting by not watching games or highlights, buying merchandise, or even discussing
games with my friends. I am also fostering discussions and political actions around these issues of
inequality.
On the other hand, Keaton Nichols, host of The Lounge on WURD Radio and long time Pittsburgh
Steelers fan is not boycotting the league, but still fully believes in Kaepernick s message.
I felt like when folks were calling for a boycott of the NFL that they were kind of calling for a
boycott of the whole thing. The players, the league itself, and the owners, which are kind of, their
own entities in themselves, Nichols explained.
Within those three groups, who each play a major role in the business of the NFL, Nichols spoke

Romeo And Juliet 1968 And 1996
William Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet , is the most well known classical piece of sentimental
literature in the world. Throughout the years, it has been adapted into films by directors from an
extensive range of dialect backgrounds. Among those, Franco Zeffirelli s 1968 version and the
modern version directed by Baz Luhrmann in 1996, are both unquestionably the most successful
and popular variations. Roger Ebert, quoted Franco Zeffirelli s 1968 film version of Romeo and
Juliet stating The success of the film depends upon Whiting and Miss Hussey...They are
magnificent . The leading actors incorporate Leonard Whiting in the role of Romeo, and Olivia
Hussey essentially as Juliet. Peter Travers, quoted Baz Luhrmann s 1996 film version of Romeo

The Philosophies of John Stuart Mill as a Guide for the World
Dr. Pest s comments: This student s term paper is a model of how to apply the philosophical
concepts of a previous century to our present society. She showed how the ideas of John Stuart Mill
can be used by intelligent people to construct a society with more opportunities for women and to
insure respect for intellectual freedom.
As the world moves into the twenty first century, it faces many problems. War, disease, over
population, and starvation are examples of problems that have yet to be solved. However, progress
has been made in many areas that aid in the reduction of human misery. Diseases, through research
and scientific study, are better understood many that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If people around the world would adopt the philosophy of John Stuart Mill, the world might become
a more intelligent, and therefore tolerant, place in which to live. John Stuart Mill espoused
beliefs on the subjection of women and theism, which, if embraced by the majority of people in
the world, would put a stop to much of the oppression the world, now endures. Mill was a
philosopher who took the unusual stance that women should be considered equal to men in all
respects and given the same opportunities as men. He had very strong feelings on the subject, and
in his essay entitled The Subjection of Women he states, ... the principle which regulates the
existing social relations between the two sexes the legal subordination of one sex to the other
4s wrong in itself, and now one of the chief hindrances to human improvement; and that it ought
to be replaced by a principle of perfect equality, admitting no power or privilege on the one side,
nor disability on the other.1 [1] In this essay Mill admits the difficulty of achieving this, but
defends his ideas by showing that the position of authority held by men is not a result of the
comparison of several kinds of systems being tried and its having been found to be the best
system, but that it is the only system that has ever been tried. As a result, one cannot not use past
experience to say that women are incapable of being in positions of authority. In this essay Mill
states, In the first

Myers Briggs Type Indicator Is A Personality Inventory
Myers Briggs Type Indicator in Business
Introduction
I chose the Myers Briggs Type Indicator topic for my paper because I find it interesting. I have
taken the actual Myers Briggs Test through the career counseling center on campus, and it gave
me a bit of direction in my life. However, I thought it would be more useful to discover the
background on it and see how it functions within business. I think using an inventory can tell
people a great deal about themselves. Similar to the collection of inventories we have taken in
class, they give invaluable insight to the way one works, thinks, and acts. This has basis in my area
of study, psychology. I think knowing they way one thinks and communicates can help people

Any and all experiences in life involved two basic processes perception and interpretation.
Perception is what we experience and interpretation is what we make of the experience (Goby
Lewis, 2000). The typology was based off Carl Jung s beliefs, but was researched in the 1940 s and
1950 s. Following the end of World War II, the idea was picked up and worked on by Katherine
C. Briggs, who had seen incompatible matches during the war between skills of individuals and
the duties they were given. She wanted to find an instrument that could make it easier to select
appropriate people for their respected jobs. Katherine Briggs daughter, Isabel Briggs Myers,
eventually joined her mother in her research (Goby Lewis, 2000).
Extraversion vs. Introversion
The first preference in the inventory is called Favorite World, this means where a person focuses
their attention ( MBTI Basics n.d.). The two options are E or I, Extraversion or Introversion.
Focusing attention on people and things or the outer world, is extraversion. Focusing attention on
the ideas and information or one s inner world is introversion (Hammer, 2014). People who prefer
extraversion usually put more effort into activities and the people surrounding them. The opposite
of that is those who typically put more effort into themselves and prefer introversion ( Myers
Briggs Type Indicator(MBTI) 2014). If a person

Aromatherapy Research Paper
Aromatherapy is the practice of using the volatile oils from plants for therapeutic wellbeing. Used
by many ancient cultures, with the first discovery dating back more than 6000 years ago in Iraq.
The name aromatherapy was created by the French chemist Rene Maurice Gattefosse (1881 1950)
whilst studying and working in his family perfumery business. Similar in nature to herbs, they have
complex chemical components that can stimulate the body to trigger a healing response. These
essential oils can be utilised in massage, inhalations, compresses, added to baths and used for toxic
free cleaning.
Chakra Balancing originating from ancient Indian traditions, the chakras are the basic energy
centres of the body. Derived from a Sanskrit word that means wheel . there are 7 main chakras
which are aligned vertically from the base of the spine to the crown of the head. The chakras help
to circulate the vital life force energy throughout our bodies and each zone correlates with different
areas of the body. When any of these energy portals are blocked it will affect the smooth flow of
energy through the body and can present as emotional, spiritual or physical disease.

John Edgar Wideman s The Baby Thrown Into Trash And...
Whether you think you can or think you can t, you are right Henry Ford. Perspective can change
an entire reality for an individual. This is also prevalent in John Edgar Wideman s Newborn
Thrown In Trash and Dies as he uses a unique first person perspective to reveal his story. Many
thoughts and ideas come to mind when this title is recited, however, this is precisely what
transpires in John Edgar Wideman s short story. In A Newborn Thrown In Trash and Dies a new
born baby discusses the different phases of a life that could have been. Widman presents his
story in the first person point of view. Wideman expresses events as he is the narrator a female
infant, who is plummeting to her death through a garbage chute. Wideman s use of the first
person point of view enables him to describe the events in the story through his eyes, gaining the
trust of the reader, to depict the social issue of child abuse and abandonment. The first person
perspective, as presented in the story, is a vital tool used by John Edgar Wideman to plant a seed
in our minds. Wideman s use of first person perspective, not only allows him to explain his story as
the narrator, but also enables him to provoke an argument that is viewed through his perspective.
The instigation of evoking thought is possible because we eventually trust Wideman, such as
trusting him in the belief that You begin and right in the eye of that instant storm your life plays
itself out for you in advance (Wideman 570).

Importance Of Propaganda In Journalism
Propaganda Propaganda regards truth and reality. It is deceptive, purposely less than honest,
biased, devoid of a sense of fairness. It attempts to manipulate someone s ideas, actions and
attitudes. Propaganda can be used in journalism by manipulating the story to be exaggerated or
simply false. A journalist or public relationsspecialist could use a false or photo shopped image in a
newspaper/webpage to sway their audience into thinking the subject of their story is true and not to
their audiences knowledge it has been manipulated.
Semantics Semantics studies how words came to be and what they mean. In a journalistic setting
when covering a story, be sure of what you are actually portraying and what you re trying to say.
There are clear distinctions between what reporting, inferences, and judgements are.
Communitarianism Communitarianism has emphasis on society and the larger majority of a
group. In journalism or public relations and individual would look at what brings people together.
For example (fiction), covering a story about how MSU s Homecoming parade brought helping
hands together as participants prepared to rain proof their floats last minute, which made for a
successful homecoming parade. A non Communitarianism could have reported how the rain ruined
the parade and many townspeople were outraged by the cities/schools decision to cancel the parade.
Libertarianism Libertarianism has emphasis on the individual. In public relations, by having a

Being A Successful Basketball Player
Being a Successful Basketball Player As a child growing up sports has been a part of my life.
There are many different sports that an athlete can play like basketball, baseball, and football.
Basketball is one of my favorite sports and is also one of the highly paid sports of all time. There
are three personality traits that make a successful basketballplayer. Those traits are determination,
leadership, and sportsmanship. Determination is one of the main keys in being a successful
basketball player. My definition of determination is someone who never gives up on anything in
life. Michael Jordanwas sick with the flu one night before a game. He still had determination to play
in the NBA game that night with the flu. Another example of determination is when Stephen
Curry was down three games in the NBA series, and he had determination to come back and win
the NBA title two years in a row. Stephen Curry showed true determination skills to never give and

true leadership skills when I saw my teammate struggling at practice on a ball handling drill. I

leadership is when the Cleveland Cavaliers were losing at halftime in game six of the NBA finals.

growing issues among older persons. Individuals aged 50 to 59 reporting use of illicit drugs
within the past year doubled from 5.1% in 2002 to 9.4% in 2007. Suicide disproportionately

possibility of drug drug interaction resulting from use of multiple prescription and OTC drugs.

Why Same Sex Couples Should be Allowed to Legally Marry
All men were created equal. It is for this reason that gays have the same rights when it comes to
housing, jobs, protection under the law, and so on, despite their difference in sexual preference.
Well then, if gays have the same rights as heterosexual men and women, why can they not be
legally married in the U.S? That is the question that half our country should be asking themselves,
since 50% of U.S citizens oppose gay marriage. However, extraordinarily, 75% of the people in the
U.S are all for gay rights (Bidstrup). But, when it comes to marriage, for one reason or another, the

As the case with various arguments, there are all whom will take the slippery slope argument
approach in their reasoning for the banning of gay marriage. A slippery slope argument is a
point in which one thing happening will lead to another thing happening, triggering a domino
effect of negative consequences from one single action. In this case, the argument at hand would
be that along with the legalization of gay marriage comes the allowing of bestial marriage,
polygamy, and many other wrongs (Bidstrup). This tactic of scaring people of accepting the
beneficial consequences of one rational decision is absurd. In countries where gay marriage is
legal, there has been no talk of any such changes or disgusting tendencies. In many Scandinavian
countries where same sex marriages are allowed, society has remained sound (Bidstrup). If
anything, marriages between criminals and those who lack morals would lead towards the anarchy
that would occur with bestial marriages and polygamy. Those who have homosexual preferences
do not share any of the same moral defects as do the criminals that can wed freely. Society needs to
open their eyes to the normality of homosexuality and the benefits of gay marriage will be
exposed. There are those who believe that gay marriage defeats the purpose of the bonding
between two different gendered people in reproduction. The idea that gay marriage should be
disallowed because two same sex partners can t reproduce is

Technological Advantages And Disadvantages Of The Spanish
Technological Advantages The Spanish forces that arrived in Mexico with Cortes numbered
five hundred and eight and were staggeringly outnumbered by the Mexica Empire. However,
these Spanish forces held a number of technological advantages that helped counter this
numerical disadvantage. Three technological advantages that were particularly important to the
Spanish success were steel, gunpowder and horses. These three thigs gave the Spanish an
advantage in both offensive and defensive capabilities. They also served as a major
psychological blow to the Mexica forces. The first technological advantage held by the Spanish
was the use of steel weapons which proved far more capable than the indigenous weaponry. The
Spanish were equipped with steel swords, lances and other weapons. These weapons provided
the Spanish with a tool that was both faster than the indigenous weapons and more capable of
cutting through cloth armors. This gave the Spanish the ability to quickly and easily kill the
indigenous warriors. On the other hand, the primary weaponry used by the indigenous peoples
were arrows, two handed swords with stone edges, lances and thrown stones. These weapons
were both slower than the Spanish weapons and were much less effective at cutting into the
Spaniards despite the fact that the Spanish wore similar armor to the indigenous warriors. This
advantage was both known and fully utilized by Cortes, who attempted to further increase the
defenses of his men by ordering his men to pay particular attention to wearing effective armor on
the head, neck and legs which had proven to be weak points in the Spanish armor. This advantage
in defenses was fully illustrated in the earlier battles with the warriors from Tlaxcala wherein the
Spanish forces faced over three thousand warriors. In this conflict, according to Bernal Diaz, the
Spanish faced a hail of arrows, stones and javelins before fighting at close range with the far more
numerous Tlaxcalan warriors. The result of this battle was the death of a single Spaniard and the
injuring of sixty, many of which were still able to continue fighting relatively unimpeded. This
ability of the Spaniards to quickly cut through the enemy while simultaneously only taking minor

The Impact Of Cio On The Organization And Difficulties...
ABSTRACT There is a drastic improvement in the IT industry from the past few years. CIO s
responsibility is to concentrate on the matters that are very important for the development of their
organization, also the business purchases and business savings. Today s CIO faces a cluster of
other tasks like competing with the improved technology and securing their data. They are given
more responsibilities like budget cuttings and taking care of global downturns. Many CIO s these
days are finding it difficult to maintain and balance their key roles as technicians and business
person successfully. This paper explains briefly about the roles of CIO s, the responsibilities of
CIO s in any organization, impact of CIO on the organization and difficulties faced by them.
INTRODUCTION:
According to Wikipedia, CIO is considered as the senior executive in an organization who is held
responsible for information technology and computer systems . They play a very significant role
in organisation. The business problems faced by an organization are solved pretty quickly. The
key role of CIO is to inculcate the knowledge on business value and to teach the co workers about
taking risks for the organization they are working for. As a person who heads an organization, he
has to overcome all the drawbacks and bring the best results that boosts the company s production.

Are Nuclear Fusion Good Or Bad
To understand how and why nuclear weapons cause so much disaster and pain, it is first necessary
to understand how they work. There are two types of nuclear bomb: fission and fusion. What is
fission? Well, everything in the world is made up of atoms. Atoms are made up of a nucleus, which
consists of a ball of protons and neutrons, and electrons, which orbit the nucleus. Fission is the
process by which atoms are hit with neutrons and split into lighter atoms. In this process, the huge
amount of binding energy which holds the protons and neutrons of the nucleus together is released,
and pieces of the nucleus fly apart with enormous energy called radioactivity. This energy is turned
into heat, which vaporizes all nearby material. When the inventors realized how frighteningly
powerful their discovery could... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Anyhow, using their new knowledge of fission, scientists set to work and created a fission bomb. In
the fission bomb, neutrons are purposefully given energy. They naturally collide with atoms, which
fission, or split apart, and release two or three more neutrons and a lot of energy. These extra
neutrons run into other atoms, causing them to fission and repeat the process. This starts a chain
reaction. Every time the number of fissions doubles, it is called a generation. When the number of
neutrons produced in one generation of fissions equals the fissions in the next, critical mass is
attained. Because some neutrons are lost or absorbed, the chain reaction can only be maintained
when there is critical mass. A frightening fact about the fission bomb is that each new generation
has as much energy in it as all the generations before it put together. Thus, every moment after the
chain reaction has started, the bomb becomes twice as dangerous as the moment before. Although
they are operated differently, uranium and plutonium bombs both use

The collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 and the dawn of...
The collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 and the dawn of Chinese economic reform under Deng
Xiaoping in 1978 promised to produce somewhat parallel long term results for two of the world s
largest economies. Although China and Russia mirrored each other in the nature of the transitions
they were undertaking at the time, their trajectories for future economic and political change are
now diverging. Despite the fact that both China and post soviet Russiawould ultimately tip the scale
away from central economic planning toward market based systems and global integration, the
approaches and circumstances surrounding these economic shifts are completely different. Initially,

The USSR had experienced two decades of stability under Brezhnev, but this era was coupled
with rising corruption and weighty foreign policy issues like the US arms race and the invasion
of Afghanistan. Contrasting economic preconditions of the movement toward market based
models also influenced patterns of change and development in Russia and China at the end of
the 20th century. For example, by the close of the 1980 s, Russia stood as a seasoned industrial
power with a sizeable, well educated, urban labor force. Militarily, it was on par with the United
States and had developed a strong presence in science and technology development.
Contrastingly, when China began its own transition almost a decade earlier, at the end of the
1970 s its economy was still predominantly rooted in agriculture. 80% of the nation s population
(as compared with 15% for Russia) consisted of uneducated agrarian peasantry, and the country
had little stake in industry or scientific innovation. In the wake of the soviet state s collapse,
Russia faced a dropping population and a deficit of available labor, while China s population was
considered very large relative to its productivity. Though these demographic factors allowed for
cheaper, more readily available labor in China, Russia vastly outstripped China in terms of natural

The Internet Is A Threat Vector For All Sizes Of...
The Internet is a threat vector for all sizes of organizations, whether private or public. New
technologies are constantly being introduced in order to keep pace with industry trends and
with these new technologies come new vulnerabilities. Many of these vulnerabilities among
software will be discovered in the testing phases or early days of release, however, there are
some vulnerabilities that will remain unknown to the masses. These unknown vulnerabilities,
once discovered, become the pathway for a zero day exploits (Zetter, 2015). The term zero day
does not have a specific definition but it is often referred to as the amount of time that the IT
community has to the newly implemented attack (Kliarsky, 2011). Zero day exploits are used to
open secret doors into user systems and since they are unknown to antivirus companies as well
they may go undetected for years, and are often times discovered by accident (Zetter, 2015).
Some of the most recent and highly publicized attacks that used zero day threats as essential
elements to the attacks are APT, Aurora, Night Dragon, and probably the most widely known to
the general public is Stuxnet (Kliarsky, 2011). Private use of zero day exploits The discovery,
acquiring, and selling of zero day exploits can be a highly profitable business for private
companies. For example in September 2015, a security startup firm Zerodium announced that they
would pay $1 million to anyone that could develop a jailbreak for the iPhone. Two

Relationship Between A Parent And Child Relationship
Throughout history human behavior has held a continuing fascination for artists of all kinds. The
way in which human beings relate to one another has been a source of inspiration to painters,
sculptors, authors, composers, playwrights, filmmakers and photographers alike.
Relationships between people vary from the everyday dynamics and the significance in which they
value one another and each connection between those relationships makes a different impact on the
one of someone else. There are many relationships people form throughout their lives, for instance
the primary relationships at the start of their lives, between parent and child, and siblings, which
start in the home. A relationship between a parent and child has a special unspoken bond in which
they share indescribable love, never ending care and affection for each other, as the parent is the
only depended and reliable thing they have. A good parent and child relationship can teach a child
how to form other bonds with mutual respect and admiration, such as friendships further on in life.
As people grow and develop, they form secondary connections such as friendships and intimate
relationships.
Friendships are predominantly built on trust, even as young children. Interaction with peers helps to
strengthen character and introduces a sense of belonging with others rather than family. Children
are naturally trusting, which means they form bonds with one another instinctively. As they get
older and gain knowledge,

Vanity In Pride And Prejudice
Solomon was known as the smartest and wisest man in the world. He became a king of Israel, and
decided that he was going to figure out where happiness is found. He thought that money might be
able to make him happy, so he became the richest man in the world, but he was unsuccessful in his
pursuit of happiness. He then tried alcohol and women, but he was still unsuccessful. By the end of
his pursuit, he eventually determined that happiness could not be found in possessions and money,
or any earthly pleasure. For people in modern times, possessions and wealth are often what guide

struggle all their lives, but will never be able to find true happiness. Literature and entertainment
provides countless examples of the truth of this statement. For much of their lives, Fitzwilliam

met the people who eventually be the most important to them, they weren t able to truly experience
love and redemption from their vain lifestyles.
In both Pride and Prejudice and Rain Man, Charlie and Mr. Darcy show traits of excessive pride

Zachary Taylor Compromise Of 1850
Zachary Taylor, elected in 1849, only served sixteen months in office as president of the United
States. Zachary Taylor was a commemorated war general for his roles within the War of 1812,
the Black Hawk War, Seminole Wars, and the Mexican War. Yet, it was only after the Mexican
War did he get public recognition and received a nomination by the Whig Party for president.
Taylor never officially finished his education and never seemed to particularly care for politics.
Besides his own election, he had never voted and he did not even vote for himself. Taylor was a
peculiar candidate, he had no political experience whatsoever and to be potentially be a
president shocked many. Fortunately for him, former president Martin Van Buren caused a split
of votes between himself and Lewis Cass. He also happened to be slave owner, which appealed
to many Southerners. It wasn t until he was elected that his ideals were revealed. Due to his time
with the army, he had a strong nationalist ideology as his main goal was to preserve the unity of
the Union. Taylor supported slavery, yet the idea of expanding slavery was not apart of his agenda.

Not only has the economy grown rapidly over the last quarter century but there has also been
dramatic demographic and social change. Fertility rates have declined substantially and there
have been massive investments in human capital. This can be seen in secondary school
enrollment rates which have risen from a mere 6% in 1960 to more than 50% today; primary
school enrollment is essentially universal. (Poppele 1999) The investments are also reflected in
the health of the population: at birth, the average Indonesian today expects to live to the age of
61 which is 50% longer than he or she expected 30 years ago. Thus, the labor force has not only
grown dramatically in size but also in quality. The consequences of these improvements are
reflected in significant rising real wage levels over the last three decades. (Smith 2002) Pride in
its past economic achievements and optimism about its future were suddenly challenged by the
economic crisis which was accompanied by dramatic shifts in the economic and political
landscape of the country. As indicated in Figure 1, the rupiah came under pressure in the last
half of 1997 when the exchange rate began showing signs of weakness. After falling by half from
around 2,400 per US$ to about 4,800 per US$ by December 1997, the rupiah collapsed in January

Pregnancy Discrimination Act Case Study
According to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, The Pregnancy Discrimination
Act (PDA) is an amendment to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Discrimination on the
basis of pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions constitutes unlawful sex discrimination
under Title VII (Eeoc.gov, 2015). In 2008, this act was not obeyed in the Young v. United Parcel
Service, Inc. case. Plaintiff Peggy Young, a dedicated UPS truck driver, filed for discrimination
under the PregnancyDiscrimination Act after her manger had put her on unpaid leave while she
was pregnant. Prior to her leave, she had expressed to her manager she was instructed not to lift
any heavy packages, over 20 pounds, from there on out for obvious safety reasons. UPS also told
Young that her pregnancy did not qualify her for the light duty work the company assigned other
employees in the past; employees with disabilities, injured on the job, and individuals who had lost

UPS argued that their prior employee accommodations, such as those injured on the job, all fell
under the company s policy. Young s case stirred up substantial controversy and has attracted
several supporters such as the U.S. government, women s rights groups, anti abortion
organizations, and workers advocates. Yet with all her support, Young still had lost two previous
rulings in her case against UPS. In February 2011, a district court decided that UPS s decision not
to accommodate Young was gender neutral (Zillman, 2015). This was a major implication during

The Vile Practice Of Sex Selection Abortion
Globally, there are over 200,000,000 missing females in this world (It s a Girl). The number of
females missing is so massive that this genocide is now dubbed the gendercide. 80 percent of
the 200 million missing females are from two countries, one of them being China (Lee 20). For
centuries parents have been trying to choose the sex of their children but the world had never
seen anything quite like this genocide ever before. (Sandel 127). This epidemic is so astounding
and so large that For each decade in the past century, more girls were killed than the sum total of

This put immense pressure on females to give birth to males as their social statuses depended on
it. Males are also known to be the preferred sex because they have a higher wage earning capacity
especially since 80% of China s population live in rural areas. Males also continue patriarchal
lines and they have the responsibility of caring for their elderly parents. Many females still face
scrutiny and pressure from relatives and neighbors especially in rural communities where
traditions are followed more strictly. All of these cultural beliefs have contributed to the reason
why sex selection is still a problem today. The spark to this modern gendercide was the
accessibility of ultrasound technology. Ultrasound technology was originally for the use of
identifying genetic abnormalities but was discovered that it could be used to detect the sex of a
fetus (Sandel 127). This technology became available in the mid 1980 s just after the
implementation of the one child rule in China. This new technology meant that people could
determine the sex of the baby before giving birth giving rise to sex selection abortions in China.
This has ultimately caused the extreme skew in the ratio of males to females in Chinese
population. The more available ultrasound technology became, the more people found out they
were having girls instead of boys. Therefore, those having females aborted their fetuses while those
who were carrying males had their babies. China is now

The Texas Rangers were infamous for their brutality. In the name of justice they executed
thousands of Mexican migrant workers without any repercussions. As early as the late 1800s, the
Rangers began their violent attempt at repression. Onofrio Baca, a Mexican migrant worker, was
arrested in 1881 on the suspicion of murder. The Rangers arrested him and promptly had him
lynched, his body left to hang for days in front of the courthouse. [3]
Though the Rangers were the most well known law enforcement agency attacking the Mexican
immigrant, they were not alone. For example, Jesus Romo was being held in custody by officers
in California when he was taken by a group of masked men and hanged. [4] The majority of the
Mexican Americans lynched between 1848 and 1870 were already in custody when they were
taken and hanged. Records indicate 473 out of every 100,000 Mexican migrant workers during
this time period died as victims of a lynching. [5]
Over one hundred years have passed since the beginning of large scale Mexican migrant worker
immigration, yet groups in San Diego County, and other border towns are still fighting to embrace
the lynch culture created by the Texas Rangers and similar organizations. Groups such as The

Descartes And Hume Essay
There are three ways in which one is able to find truth: through reason (A is A), by utilizing the
senses (paper burns) or by faith (God is all loving). As the period of the Renaissance came to a
close, the popular paradigm for philosophers shifted from faith to reason and finally settling on the
senses. Thinkers began to challenge authorities, including great teacherssuch as Aristotle and Plato,
and through skepticism the modern worldbegan. The French philosopher, RenГ© Descartes who
implemented reason to find truth, as well as the British empiricist David Hume with his usage of
analytic synthetic distinction, most effectively utilized the practices of skepticism in the modern
world.

For in Descartes terms, it was plausible to doubt that one has a body, but impossible to doubt the
existence of one s mind; therefore ...self and mind must be identical (Palmer 162).
Hume on the other hand, took a different approach to the idea of self. He believed that there in
fact was no such thing as selfhood. Instead he asserts that it must be some one impression, that
gives rise to every real idea. But self...is not any one impression, but that to which our several
impressions and ideas are supposed to have a reference... (597). By this he implies that in order to
form concrete ideas, ones impressions of pain, pleasure, joy, etc. must be invariable throughout
time. This, Hume states, we know without a doubt to be impossible. Passions succeed each other
over time and give rise to new passions, therefore ...it cannot be from any of these
impressions...that the idea of self is derived, and consequently there is no such idea (597).
Although like Descartes, Hume practiced the art of radical skepticism, he felt that if he could not
utilize his senses to prove something it was meaningless. Hume continued development of Leibniz s
analytical synthetic distinction, or in Hume s words ...a distinction between relations of ideas and
matters of fact (Palmer 197). Analytical propositions are true by definition and are a priori, and
therefore necessarily true. Synthetic propositions are not true by

Positive Messages On Business Communication
Positive Messages in Business Communication
Introduction
Business communication requires avenues through which leaders, management, and workers
communicate. It also requires the communication process between an organization and its partners,
as well as the customers. In business communication, it is vital for an organization to develop a
communication channel that is not only efficient and effective, but one that relays positive
messages. Positive messages are crucial in developing good relationships with the employees,
business partners, and customers. Research shows that we actually comprehend a positive
statement 30 to 40 percent faster than we do a negative statement, our mind literally has to
unscramble negative messages to determine the meaning (Simoneaux Stroud, 2014). There is a
power in using positive messages, a strategy in building relationships and producing positive
results. When using positive messaging it is beneficial to use the 5 S s, and goodwill messaging.
The 5 S s are; selfless, specific, sincere, spontaneous, and short. This paper looks into the effects of
positive messaging, with an emphasis on goodwill messages, and the 5 S s.
Goodwill Messages In business, companies normally experience internal and external pressures
that may keep them from making various goals. For instance, a company may fail to repay its
loans on time, or fail to pay its workers as required. It is also common for companies to make late

Scene 1; Mouth
Digestion first begins in the mouth, using mechanical digestion. Incisors first bite into the food
breaking the polymers into smaller monomers. As the food goes further into your mouth the food
is then ground by your molars. This breaks down the food into smaller particles, which is then
mixed by the tongue along with saliva. Saliva is secreted by the salivary glands into the mouth,

Once the bolus enters the stomach, the lower oesophageal sphincter contracts to prevent acid
reflux. Folds in the stomach allow for the stomach to expand as the stomach fills. The stomach
excretes hydrochloric acid and other enzymes which allow for the break down of the bolus, as well
as mucus to help protect the lining of the stomach walls against the stomach acid. Protein digestion
begins in the stomach, where stomach acid of pH of 1 disrupts protein structure which allows for
proteolytic enzymes, also known as proteases, to reduce large proteins to polypeptides (Human
Anatomy). Stomach acid has numerous jobs in the breaking down of the bolus such as; rendering
minerals more soluble, maintains acidity, killing microbes and converts inactive digestive enzymes
to their active form. The muscle contractions in the stomach causes the bolus to turn into chyme, a
food mixture with a watery like texture. The chyme now enters the small intestine through the
pyloric sphincter at the base of the stomach, which regulates the rate at which chyme is released

Humanistic Theory On The Jarvis Family
Implementing the Humanistic Theory on the Jarvis Family Introduction Most cases that are
being investigated by social work agencies often include various parts, people and ways in which
the client is helped. The case involving the Jarvis family is a case of reported sexual child
abuse. Child Welfare Services became aware of the abuse when Kay Partridge, school nurse,

Joanne Jarvis teachers noticed a change in the girls behaviors and had reported in to the principle
who then contacted Ms. Partridge. Eventually Marie and Joanne had admitted that their father,
Kenneth Jarvis, had been sexually abusing them for years. Also, their mother, Jean Jarvis, had

Question B. Since blood flow to Joseph s heart has slowed down greatly so have others things
such as oxygen flow, glucose, and necessary ions. With cells having to work extra hard attempting
to get the body back to homeostasis it is rapidly burning up its supply of adenosine triphosphate
(ATP). Carbon dioxide is beginning to build up in the cells, throwing off pH levels because
carbon dioxide is waste that needs to be gotten rid of. The mitochondria in Joseph s cells cannot
make more ATP due to the lack of oxygen and glucose. Since there is no ATP active transport cells

Notes On The Trade System
Timotius Ferdinand
Mini Case 1
FIN 536.03
November 10th, 2016
1.
The carry trade is a system to gain profit by borrowing money using low interest rate currency
and then investing it with another currency of high interest rate. Carry trade is a quick and easy
way to get profit. Investors would benefit from the failure of Uncovered Interest Rate Parity
(UIRP). According to Bloomberg, the carry trade is the easy money , it is an easy way to get
profit without any hassle or hard work.
Money managers can easily get profit by utilizing the failure of UIRP. The arbitrage techniques
work for the investors because the UIRP does not hold. The uncovered interest rate parity is a
parity condition stating that the difference between interest rates from any currency should be
equal. But in the real world, the UIRP does not hold, this is what attract investors to do arbitrage
between currencies. Previously, people pair Australian Dollar with Japanese Yen, but the instability
of these both currencies, force money managers to change their funding and target currency, which
is why people start to carry trade Indian Rupees and Euros.
2.
Developed countries tend to have low or negative interest rates. The main reason for low interest
rates in the developed countries is to stimulate economic growth. European Central Bank (ECB) is
an institution that regulates the interest rates in the Euro zone. Negative or low interest rate was
created to help the slow or low economic growth. In contrast,

What Is The Role Of Segregation In African American Society
After slavery got abolished people that were white had opinions of free and voting African
Americans. Few accepted them as equal and free. Although some white Americans welcomed them,
others used people s ignorance, racism, and self interest to sustain and spread racial divisions.
Hence the African Americans were treated as a second citizen and kept to a lower level. The
Southern States where most black African Americans lived started enacting literally tests, tax polls,
elaborate registration systems, and all white democratic parties to exclude black voters.1 America at
this moment , said the former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in 1945, stands at the
summit of the world. In 1950 s America is propelling economically and has the strongest military in
the world. Everywhere there were construction and development. On the other hand, Segregation or

The Relationships between Service Quality and Customer...
From plentiful literatures we can see customer satisfaction is related to the quality both of product
and service. According to Regan (1963), he is one of the first to draw the relation between service
quality and customer satisfaction, and since that time service industry research has flourished for a
long time. Specifically, practitioners and academicians have been interested in how consumers
conceptualize servicequality. In the literature, the service quality construct is commonly defined as
a difference score (discrepancy) between the service quality that is delivered by a firmand the
service performance that customers expected to get (Gronroos, 1988; Parasuraman et al., 1985).
According to Cronin Taylor(1992), consumerperception of firm delivery of a desired service.
Greenwell, Fink, and Pastore (2002) made an experiment in measuring the impact that service
quality has on customer satisfaction. And the result shows satisfied service quality has a positive
correlation with customer satisfaction. Yoshida and James s (2010) argues that service quality
directly influences satisfaction with the service experience and that product quality also has
directly influences on customer satisfaction. The outcome of their study indicate that product and
service quality influence customer satisfaction, and in turn, customer satisfaction influences
customers shopping behaviors. And according to their study, one of the most important factor
concerning service quality

Legal Aid In Criminal Justice
One thing that needs to be changed within the civil justice system is a victims right to counsel,
especially involving domestic violence victims that have a low income. The President of the Legal

entitled to free legal assistance if they are charged with a crime, but there is no legal right to an

contributions. However, sadly we live in a world where a large majority are consumed with
selflessness, or are forced to do so to live.

Treaties are formally concluded and ratified agreement between countries which are solutions to
solve bigger problems. Most of them contain promising resolutions, but sometimes they do not
succeed in solving the conflict. When a treaty does not encompass the smart solution, the problem

suffering, conflict, and combat. Beginning in the summer of 1914 and lasting four long years,
World War I, was a revolutionary war between the Allies, Central Powers, and Japan. Militarism,

Captain Cook, Dracula and Whitby Abbey have each played a part in Whitby s fame and
prosperity. Captain Cook s association with Whitby began in 1746 when he became a merchant
navy apprentice with Quaker shipowners, John and Henry Walker, ferrying coal between the
North East and London. The Captain Cook Memorial Museum is in a seventeenth century house
in Grape Lane on the harbourside. According to long standing Whitby tradition, this is where
Cook lodged during his apprenticeship when he was not at sea. (For more on Captain Cook see

Fiscal policy is much more effective at promoting economic growth than monetary policy. This is
because if using monetary policy to reduce the cost of money has no effect on the exchange rate, it
does nothing to stimulate exports and discourages imports.
Effectiveness of the Monetary Policy
Monetary policy is a more effective tool for economic stimulus than fiscal policy under a floating
exchange rate system, in other words a system in which the currencies of trading countries can
increase or decrease in value. For example attempts to stimulate economic growth by reducing the
cost of money (cutting interest rates), the resulting effects on the exchange rate reducing it against
other currencies will stimulate exports while making imports more expensive. This adds impetus to
the intended economic stimulus.
Responsible Institutions
A combination of fiscal and monetary policy is generally used to steer the economy in a desired
direction. Although governments direct fiscal policy, many countries delegate responsibility for
monetary policy to central banks. This strategy prevents governments from manipulating interest
rates for short term political advantage and promotes stability in the money supply as well as in the
price of goods.

My Experience In My New School
Freshman year was a relatively complicated year for me. I made a big change by leaving the
school district I grew up in for a school that would challenge me academically. This wasn t an
easy transition to go to a new school that I had no friends at in the beginning, but I knew it was
the place for me to be. I put my faith in hard work and in the reputation of a school I had only
been to once. Although this sounds like the recipe for disaster, it ended up being the formula for
success for myself. I knew that if I worked hard in everything and trusted in the process then
eventually things will work out. I knew I would be able to accomplish things I had never done
before because of this school. Most people would call me crazy for enrolling at Cathedral Prep
due to the fact that it is an hour and a half one way. From the beginning of this adventure, my
parents said, We ll try it the first year and see if it s the place for you. From that very first day I
fell in love with the school and realized I would have to give all the effort I possible could to my
academics and athletics at this school in order to excel, a very different concept from the school
I had just left. I came in to a new school with a cross country team I had never met and a coach I
knew nothing about. Ever since day one, I put my trust completely in my coach and his training
plan to make me the best runner I could possibly be. The very first racewe ran against the returning

Stamp Act Summary
First of all, as a Patriot, we colonists have been pretty mad lately. We have made are land in the
east and invested are money into are houses, and now the Proclamation of 1763 has forced Native
Americans to move west. Two years later, 1765, Parliament has passed the Stamp Act. This made
us colonists pay for a tax put on all printed materials, newspaper, wills and playing cards too. The
British officials had applied the stamp after the tax was paid. The Stamp Act taxed us without are
consent. Patrick Henry persuaded the burgess to do something about the Stamp Act because we had
about enough. So Samuel Adamsstarted an organization called the Sons of Liberty, the main goal
of the group was to protest against the Stamp Act. People in the cities that also wanted to protest,

This time the Townshend Act would put taxes on only imported goods, such as, glass, tea, and

boycott. In all the colonies the women formed groups called Daughters of Liberty. They wore
homemade fabrics and made other goods instead of buying British goods. Lastly, On March 5,
1770, there was fight that broke right outside of my window. It was between some British
officers and Bostonians. The crowd threw sticks and stones at the soldiers. The crowd taunted the
soldiers and yelled them to fire at the crowd. After one soldier was knocked down, the redcoats

Analysis Of Lark And Termite By Jayne Anne Phillips
In Lark and Termite, Jayne Anne Phillips advances a distorted conception of time that deliberately
confuses the boundary between past and present. The novel relays the narratives of a set of
interrelated characters, one of which takes place in Korea in 1950 and the rest of which occur in
Winfield, West Virginia in 1959. While these narratives are set apart from one another textually,
Phillips distorts their temporal and spatial relationship to one another throughout the novel by
drawing parallels between characters and events from the past and present, Korea and the United
States. Through this conception of time, as well as her use of spectral figures, she creates a
representation of the haunting effects of war on the next generation the ways in which it literally
shapes both individuals and families. Termite himself is curiously positioned within this distorted
time space dynamic, making him both a symbol of transgenerational trauma and a figure of
existential liminality.
The interweavement of past and present and this portrayal of a liminally positioned Termite
ultimately create a unique setting, a particular distortion of time and place, for the confrontation of
trauma and the victims movement into release.

LITERATURE SURVEY Earlier, for controlling home appliances we need to switch it manually.
Because of the difficulty in operation and difficult for remote access, this system was not
considered as an efficient method. As the technology has advanced the home automation system
become controlled by Bluetooth module which mark the beginning of wireless transmission era.
The limitation of Bluetooth technology is that there is a chance of interference with other devices
using Bluetooth and range is also limited for Bluetooth[1]. Advancement in technology has created
an outburst on the development of the android platform which became an revolution in the cellular
mobile system. It can be controlled by android mobile phone. In the case of android phone, it was
platform dependent, i.e., we need an iOS for Apple phone android for working in android phone[4].
We have developed a system that we can control and monitor the home appliances using any devices
having an internet connection[3]. Figure 1: Home automation using Bluetooth module Figure 2:

Having had firsthand experience in the immigration transition system, it has been captivating to

  • 2. Interaction between Political and Social Life in Ancient... Interaction between Political and Social Life in Ancient Imperial Rome The interaction between political and social life in Ancient Rome has been accurately portrayed in the well researched novel, The Course of Honour , by Lindsey Davies. However as this is a fictional novel told as an interesting story instead of fact, the information given must be corroborated with several primary sources to correct any inherent biases. Lindsey Davies is an author who specialises in writing about life in Ancient Rome. Her novels are famous for the detective work of Marcus Didius Falco, with books such as Last Act in Palmyra , Venus in Copper , A Dying Light in Corduba and The Iron Hands of Mars winning her the Sherlock Holmes Award for... (Tacitus, p.68) As well as being a strong source of information about political life during this time, the novel also catalogues the struggles faced before and after marriage by Vespasians mistress, the freedwoman Caenis. Their forbidden relationship is threatened as Vespasian reaches the height of his political career. Caenis was but a footnote mentioned in history which Davies has sanctified into a wonder woman without whom Vespasians career could not have possibly succeeded. This obvious glorification of a story is an example of a bias used to make a tale more interesting, and the lack of historical sources commenting on Caenis only proves that she is nowhere near as important as Davis makes her out to be. Regardless, this novel achieves its aim as an interesting secondary source of information on Imperial Rome from two totally different perspectives that of a slave and freedwoman, and that of an emperor. It showcases very suitably both the social and political struggles which are faced in upkeeping this unlikely relationship. There are different viewpoints on the way slaves were treated in Imperial Rome. Caenis in the story is first portrayed as a faithful and respectful slave, claiming I know how to keep my mouth shut, any sensible slave does! • 3. Victimization of Minor Characters in Laura Esquivel s... In a novel, minor characters are never the focus of the plot. Minor characters are present in a novel to affect the major characters and help the character development of the major characters. Minor characters influence the major characters in many ways. One of these ways of supporting the major characters, is the victimization of the minor characters. Two excellent examples of minor characters that impact the major characters of the novels due to the minor characters being victimized is Nacha in Like Water for Chocolateby Laura Esquivel and Monica in Silence by Shusaku Endo. Father Rodrigues met Monica for the first time shortly after he has been betrayed by Kichijiro. From the first time that Father Rodrigues encountered Monica, she... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Monica offered Father Rodrigues a cucumber, showing her respect for him by giving him what little food she had to offer. From this small yet generous offer made by Monica, Father Rodrigues reflected on his mission to Japan. Since coming to this country, he reflected, he had caused nothing but hardship to these poor Christians, and he nibbled at the cucumber with his front teeth. He had received from them the little hut in which he had dwelt, they had given him the clothing he now wore, he had eaten their food. Now it was his turn to give them something. But what could he give? The only thing he had to offer was his life and his death (Endo 81). Monica was already malnourished, yet she selflessly offered her only food to Father Rodrigues, a man she had never encountered before. This was huge to Father Rodrigues and it made him question what he can do to help her in return. Monica?s impact and the victimization made Father Rodrigues question whether or not his coming to Japan really worth it or not. He realized that he had only created more hardships for the Christian peasants that he had encountered throughout Japan. However, at the same time, Father Rodrigues also realized that many of the Christians looked up to him and were thankful that Father Rodrigues would try to come and help them. Monica, through her being victimized, helped Father Rodrigues decide his fate in the end, dying as a martyr, or living and trying to resurrect a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Homeless And Non Homeless Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual The study examined two groups, homeless and non homeless Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual (LGB) youths (Rosario, Schrimshaw, Hunter, 2012). There were a total of 156 participants between the ages of 14 and 21 years with a mean age of 18.3 years. Participants were recruited from community based organizations, which focused on youths and two college organizations of LGB students. Researchers wanted to explore potential risk factors associated with the reason some LGB youths become homeless, while others do not. The risk factors included experiencing sexual abuse, negative responses from others based on one s sexual orientation, unbearable stress for the parent or youth, and substance abuse. All of which are reasons one may run away from home and become homeless. Lastly, researcher s hypothesized non homeless youth are less likely than homeless youths to be involved in sexual abuse and early sexual identity development as it pertains to LGB (Rosario et al., 2012). The results revealed 75 of the 156 youths reported being homeless at some point, 57 had a history of running away, 38 were evicted from their parent s home; 20 youths experienced both running away and eviction (Rosario et al., 2012). From the 57 youths with a history of running away, 23 reported running away once and 14 more than one time. In relation to sexual orientation 13 youths who ran away, and 12 youths who were evicted reported identifying as LGB as the reason for becoming homeless. Researchers then combined the ... • 5. Strikers Played A More Transformative Role During The... Strikers played a more transformative role during the progressive era. The strikers were the face of grievances facing workers. They gathered and fought for the rights they thought they deserved. They were able to accomplish demands that had plagued their lives for years. Without the use of striking or unionized assemblies, a push for rights would have been lost in the aggressive and influential employers. The reformers and push to give workers rights came about from the loud voice of strikes. The AnthraciteIndustry is one such unionized group that transformed the work of miners. The Shirtwaist factory workers is another group of strikers that helps prove that strikers played a more transformative role. These two groups embody the spirit of transformation towards a better working life. Anthracite coalmining consisted of differing levels of skill and precision that could be lucrative depending upon the miner s luck. A coal miner would be lucky to find steady employment, or to even survive to the day s end. The procedures involved in preparing the coal from the mines to the shipping was filled with dangers that led the industry as one of the world s most hazardous. Mine owners to maintain overhead costs and keep mine workers in the industry, would tactfully engage in underemployment. This left workers in state of constant need for more work, or higher wages to offset working part time. These Anthracite miners were largely paid more than the average miner, but ... Marriage in the Christian religion takes place in a church and is conducted by a priest. The couple makes vows to each other and God and is a lifelong commitment. Anointing of the Sick was once referred to as Extreme Unction. This sacrament previously was only performed on those who were dying. Roman Catholics not only use this prayer and ritual to help prepare a person for his or her death, but also to help a person regain health: mentally, physically, or emotionally. Along with extreme unction, priests administer last rites, which gives the dying the chance to confess once more. Anointing of the sick and the sacrament of confession are called the Sacraments of Healing. Holy Orders, or Ordination, occurs when a new priest is confirmed in an ordination ceremony. The bishop preforms the ceremony and presents the priest with symbols of his new position, such as a Bible. This sacrament inducts men into the clergy, passing on of the authority of the ... • 7. Racism Vs Football Racism This season in the NFL has been one of the more politically and racially driven seasons that we ve seen in a very long time. From President Donald Trump calling NFL players S.O.B s at a rally in Huntsville, Ala., to Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones taking a stance that if any players disrespect the flag or national anthem they won t play, and finally players speaking out across the league on racial injustice and oppression. It truly ignited a conversation in the United States on both sides of the aisle. But how did we get to this point? To answer that question, we have to look at former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick who did not stand before a preseason game in 2016 and explained why he did it. I am not going ... Or are they continuing to watch, but still believe in the overall message of Kaepernick s stance? If you ask college student Conner Watson, who follows both the New England Patriotsand Philadelphia Eagles, he is boycotting the league and felt that something needed to be done. After seeing what happened to Colin Kaepernick, I knew I had to do something. I was so moved by what he did, as well as several conversations with my sister regarding activism, I couldn t give my viewership to the NFL this season, he said. Watson also explained what steps he has taken to boycott the league from monetary discussion to just regular football talk with friends. I am boycotting by not watching games or highlights, buying merchandise, or even discussing games with my friends. I am also fostering discussions and political actions around these issues of inequality. On the other hand, Keaton Nichols, host of The Lounge on WURD Radio and long time Pittsburgh Steelers fan is not boycotting the league, but still fully believes in Kaepernick s message. I felt like when folks were calling for a boycott of the NFL that they were kind of calling for a boycott of the whole thing. The players, the league itself, and the owners, which are kind of, their own entities in themselves, Nichols explained. Within those three groups, who each play a major role in the business of the NFL, Nichols spoke about why he

Throughout the years, it has been adapted into films by directors from an extensive range of dialect backgrounds. Among those, Franco Zeffirelli s 1968 version and the modern version directed by Baz Luhrmann in 1996, are both unquestionably the most successful and popular variations. The Philosophies of John Stuart Mill as a Guide for the World Dr. Pest s comments: This student s term paper is a model of how to apply the philosophical concepts of a previous century to our present society. She showed how the ideas of John Stuart Mill can be used by intelligent people to construct a society with more opportunities for women and to insure respect for intellectual freedom. As the world moves into the twenty first century, it faces many problems. War, disease, over population, and starvation are examples of problems that have yet to be solved. However, progress has been made in many areas that aid in the reduction of human misery. Diseases, through research and scientific study, are better understood many that ... If people around the world would adopt the philosophy of John Stuart Mill, the world might become a more intelligent, and therefore tolerant, place in which to live. John Stuart Mill espoused beliefs on the subjection of women and theism, which, if embraced by the majority of people in the world, would put a stop to much of the oppression the world, now endures. Mill was a philosopher who took the unusual stance that women should be considered equal to men in all respects and given the same opportunities as men. He had very strong feelings on the subject, and in his essay entitled The Subjection of Women he states, ... the principle which regulates the existing social relations between the two sexes the legal subordination of one sex to the other 4s wrong in itself, and now one of the chief hindrances to human improvement; and that it ought to be replaced by a principle of perfect equality, admitting no power or privilege on the one side, nor disability on the other.1 [1] In this essay Mill admits the difficulty of achieving this, but defends his ideas by showing that the position of authority held by men is not a result of the comparison of several kinds of systems being tried and its having been found to be the best system, but that it is the only system that has ever been tried. As a result, one cannot not use past experience to say that women are incapable of being in positions of authority. In this essay Mill states, In the first ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I have taken the actual Myers Briggs Test through the career counseling center on campus, and it gave me a bit of direction in my life. However, I thought it would be more useful to discover the background on it and see how it functions within business. I think using an inventory can tell people a great deal about themselves. Similar to the collection of inventories we have taken in class, they give invaluable insight to the way one works, thinks, and acts. This has basis in my area of study, psychology. The typology was based off Carl Jung s beliefs, but was researched in the 1940 s and 1950 s. Following the end of World War II, the idea was picked up and worked on by Katherine C. Briggs, who had seen incompatible matches during the war between skills of individuals and the duties they were given. She wanted to find an instrument that could make it easier to select appropriate people for their respected jobs. Katherine Briggs daughter, Isabel Briggs Myers, eventually joined her mother in her research (Goby Lewis, 2000). Extraversion vs. Introversion The first preference in the inventory is called Favorite World, this means where a person focuses their attention ( MBTI Basics n.d.). The two options are E or I, Extraversion or Introversion. Focusing attention on people and things or the outer world, is extraversion. Focusing attention on the ideas and information or one s inner world is introversion (Hammer, 2014). The first person perspective, as presented in the story, is a vital tool used by John Edgar Wideman to plant a seed in our minds. Wideman s use of first person perspective, not only allows him to explain his story as the narrator, but also enables him to provoke an argument that is viewed through his perspective. It attempts to manipulate someone s ideas, actions and attitudes. Propaganda can be used in journalism by manipulating the story to be exaggerated or simply false. A journalist or public relationsspecialist could use a false or photo shopped image in a newspaper/webpage to sway their audience into thinking the subject of their story is true and not to their audiences knowledge it has been manipulated. Technological Advantages And Disadvantages Of The Spanish Technological Advantages The Spanish forces that arrived in Mexico with Cortes numbered five hundred and eight and were staggeringly outnumbered by the Mexica Empire. However, these Spanish forces held a number of technological advantages that helped counter this numerical disadvantage. Three technological advantages that were particularly important to the Spanish success were steel, gunpowder and horses. These three thigs gave the Spanish an advantage in both offensive and defensive capabilities. They also served as a major psychological blow to the Mexica forces. The first technological advantage held by the Spanish was the use of steel weapons which proved far more capable than the indigenous weaponry. The Spanish were equipped with steel swords, lances and other weapons. These weapons provided the Spanish with a tool that was both faster than the indigenous weapons and more capable of cutting through cloth armors. This gave the Spanish the ability to quickly and easily kill the indigenous warriors. On the other hand, the primary weaponry used by the indigenous peoples were arrows, two handed swords with stone edges, lances and thrown stones. These weapons were both slower than the Spanish weapons and were much less effective at cutting into the Spaniards despite the fact that the Spanish wore similar armor to the indigenous warriors. This advantage was both known and fully utilized by Cortes, who attempted to further increase the defenses of his men by ordering his men to pay particular attention to wearing effective armor on the head, neck and legs which had proven to be weak points in the Spanish armor. This advantage in defenses was fully illustrated in the earlier battles with the warriors from Tlaxcala wherein the Spanish forces faced over three thousand warriors. In this conflict, according to Bernal Diaz, the Spanish faced a hail of arrows, stones and javelins before fighting at close range with the far more numerous Tlaxcalan warriors. The result of this battle was the death of a single Spaniard and the injuring of sixty, many of which were still able to continue fighting relatively unimpeded. There are two types of nuclear bomb: fission and fusion. What is fission? Well, everything in the world is made up of atoms. Atoms are made up of a nucleus, which consists of a ball of protons and neutrons, and electrons, which orbit the nucleus. Fission is the process by which atoms are hit with neutrons and split into lighter atoms. In this process, the huge amount of binding energy which holds the protons and neutrons of the nucleus together is released, and pieces of the nucleus fly apart with enormous energy called radioactivity. This energy is turned into heat, which vaporizes all nearby material. When the inventors realized how frighteningly powerful their discovery could... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Anyhow, using their new knowledge of fission, scientists set to work and created a fission bomb. In the fission bomb, neutrons are purposefully given energy. They naturally collide with atoms, which fission, or split apart, and release two or three more neutrons and a lot of energy. These extra neutrons run into other atoms, causing them to fission and repeat the process. This starts a chain reaction. Every time the number of fissions doubles, it is called a generation. When the number of neutrons produced in one generation of fissions equals the fissions in the next, critical mass is attained. Because some neutrons are lost or absorbed, the chain reaction can only be maintained when there is critical mass. A frightening fact about the fission bomb is that each new generation has as much energy in it as all the generations before it put together. Thus, every moment after the chain reaction has started, the bomb becomes twice as dangerous as the moment before. Although they are operated differently, uranium and plutonium bombs both use ... Martin spent most of his times in his journals in the war and talking about his post war adventures. He has traveled frequently during his time in the military. The most convenient and commonly used way of traveling was on foot. It was the most inexpensive way of travel, the easiest way to travel in large groups and it allowed the military to travel quietly, efficiently and without being seen. The number of females missing is so massive that this genocide is now dubbed the gendercide. 80 percent of the 200 million missing females are from two countries, one of them being China (Lee 20). For centuries parents have been trying to choose the sex of their children but the world had never seen anything quite like this genocide ever before. (Sandel 127). This epidemic is so astounding and so large that For each decade in the past century, more girls were killed than the sum total of all those who died in genocides of the entire century (Lee 19). This put immense pressure on females to give birth to males as their social statuses depended on it. Males are also known to be the preferred sex because they have a higher wage earning capacity especially since 80% of China s population live in rural areas. Males also continue patriarchal lines and they have the responsibility of caring for their elderly parents. Many females still face scrutiny and pressure from relatives and neighbors especially in rural communities where traditions are followed more strictly. All of these cultural beliefs have contributed to the reason why sex selection is still a problem today. The spark to this modern gendercide was the accessibility of ultrasound technology. Ultrasound technology was originally for the use of identifying genetic abnormalities but was discovered that it could be used to detect the sex of a fetus (Sandel 127). This technology became available in the mid 1980 s just after the implementation of the one child rule in China. This new technology meant that people could determine the sex of the baby before giving birth giving rise to sex selection abortions in China. This has ultimately caused the extreme skew in the ratio of males to females in Chinese population. The more available ultrasound technology became, the more people found out they were having girls instead of boys. Therefore, those having females aborted their fetuses while those who were carrying males had their babies. China is now ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 35. Descartes And Hume Essay There are three ways in which one is able to find truth: through reason (A is A), by utilizing the senses (paper burns) or by faith (God is all loving). As the period of the Renaissance came to a close, the popular paradigm for philosophers shifted from faith to reason and finally settling on the senses. Thinkers began to challenge authorities, including great teacherssuch as Aristotle and Plato, and through skepticism the modern worldbegan. Instead he asserts that it must be some one impression, that gives rise to every real idea. But self...is not any one impression, but that to which our several impressions and ideas are supposed to have a reference... (597). By this he implies that in order to form concrete ideas, ones impressions of pain, pleasure, joy, etc. must be invariable throughout time. This, Hume states, we know without a doubt to be impossible. Passions succeed each other over time and give rise to new passions, therefore ...it cannot be from any of these impressions...that the idea of self is derived, and consequently there is no such idea (597). Although like Descartes, Hume practiced the art of radical skepticism, he felt that if he could not utilize his senses to prove something it was meaningless. Humanistic Theory On The Jarvis Family Implementing the Humanistic Theory on the Jarvis Family Introduction Most cases that are being investigated by social work agencies often include various parts, people and ways in which the client is helped. The case involving the Jarvis family is a case of reported sexual child abuse. Child Welfare Services became aware of the abuse when Kay Partridge, school nurse, contacted the agency in fear of the children s well being. The case came about after Marie and Joanne Jarvis teachers noticed a change in the girls behaviors and had reported in to the principle who then contacted Ms. Partridge. Eventually Marie and Joanne had admitted that their father, Kenneth Jarvis, had been sexually abusing them for years. Also, their mother, Jean Jarvis, had admitted to know about the abuse, but was unsure of how she could protect both herself and her children from Mr. Jarvis. As a result, the agency is hoping to work with Mrs. Jarvis and her daughters to help them cope with the effects of the incident can have on Marie, Joanne, and Mrs. Jarvis. In order to help the family, the social worker would implement a human behavior therapy as a way for both parties to understand why they, the client, are behaving in a certain way. The carry trade is a system to gain profit by borrowing money using low interest rate currency and then investing it with another currency of high interest rate. Carry trade is a quick and easy way to get profit. Investors would benefit from the failure of Uncovered Interest Rate Parity (UIRP). According to Bloomberg, the carry trade is the easy money , it is an easy way to get profit without any hassle or hard work. Money managers can easily get profit by utilizing the failure of UIRP. The arbitrage techniques work for the investors because the UIRP does not hold. • 51. Analysis Of Lark And Termite By Jayne Anne Phillips In Lark and Termite, Jayne Anne Phillips advances a distorted conception of time that deliberately confuses the boundary between past and present. The novel relays the narratives of a set of interrelated characters, one of which takes place in Korea in 1950 and the rest of which occur in Winfield, West Virginia in 1959. While these narratives are set apart from one another textually, Phillips distorts their temporal and spatial relationship to one another throughout the novel by drawing parallels between characters and events from the past and present, Korea and the United States. Through this conception of time, as well as her use of spectral figures, she creates a representation of the haunting effects of war on the next generation the ways in which it literally shapes both individuals and families. Termite himself is curiously positioned within this distorted time space dynamic, making him both a symbol of transgenerational trauma and a figure of existential liminality. The interweavement of past and present and this portrayal of a liminally positioned Termite ultimately create a unique setting, a particular distortion of time and place, for the confrontation of trauma and the victims movement into release.
