Juan Seguin was a military leader and politician, who fought against Mexican president Santa
Anna during the Texas Revolution. He was one of the first ones to rebel against Santa Anna,
including many other famous names that opposed the Mexican president, such as, Sam Houston
and David Crockett , just to name a few. He is known for his help and leadership during the battle
of San Jacinto. Not only was he a military leader during the Texas Revolution, but he later became

Seguin was elected to the Texas senate and helped Texas make money. He was later re elected as
mayor in 1840. In 1843, Seguin was notified that their might be a Mexican invasion in Texas.
Seguin informed Houston on his suspicions but did nothing on the matter. San Antonio was
invaded for only two days but Texans now saw Seguin as a traitor, because he and his Tejanos
evacuated the city. Seguin was forced to resign as mayor and retreat to Mexico.
In Mexico, he joined the Mexican army and returned to Texas in the attack against Texas. Many
Anglo Texans thought of Seguin as a traitor, but Seguin later confessed that he was left with no
choice but to join the Mexican army. He was forced to stay in the Mexican army for the next 6
years, forced to fight against his very own people. After his service with the Mexican army, he
wanted to return home to Texas, where he became a rancher and lived the rest of life in

Lamb To The Slaughter And The Open Window
Compare and Contrast Essay The short stories written by Saki called The Open Window and The
Lamb of the Slaughter written by Roald Dahl are two great and amazing stories. While some
differences between Mary Maloney from Lamb to the Slaughter and Vera Sappleton from The
Open Window, the similarities are salient. The similarities between the two plots of the stories
both involve a female who is the antagonist and who have both done something bad. The character
Mary Maloney and Vera Sappleton are similar because they both did something wrong and they are
both the one ones who know what they did. Also, they both know how to lie and manipulate other
people into believing whatever it is they want them to believe. The themes are similar in such...

Mary Maloney is pregnant and is married and lives with her husband while Vera is only fifteen
years old and is living with her aunt. In Lamb to the Slaughter, one of the themes is betrayal for
Patrick Maloney to leave his wife and his unborn baby without knowing why. But the ultimate
betrayal comes from Mary for killing her husband. In The Open Window another theme is
appearance as reality. The point of this theme is that what an individual perceives becomes his
reality. Framton Nuttel (a new neighbor) was expecting to see three ghosts come through the
window, so when he saw the three men coming towards the house, he could not get out of there
any faster. The conflict in The Open Window is Vera tricking Mr. Nuttel to believe he has seen
three ghosts, when in fact he has not. The conflict in Lamb to the Slaughter is Mary killing her
husband because he wanted to leave her and getting away with it. The spiritual lesson in Lamb to
the slaughter is Mary breaking one of the Ten Commandments by committing murder. In The Open
Window Vera also broke one of the Ten Commandments by

Postmodernism And Modernism In Catch 22
Regarding the plot of the novel, Catch 22 follows the experiences of Captain Yossarian, a
bombardier in the Mediterranean theater of World War II in 1944, who flies missions from the
island of Pianosa over targets in Italy and France. He is surrounded by a huge cast of colourful and
often weird characters, who are intended to satirize not only military life but life in any large
institution. They include Doc Daneeka, the base medical officer who is more concerned with his
own problems than with those of his patients; Lieutenant Milo Minderbinder, the mess officer who
uses his connections to build a massive commercial empire that includes dealing with the enemy
and who is the culmination of the business forces In war environment.; Major Major... Show more

The characteristics include the use of irony, playfulness, metafiction, and black humour. It is the
term used to suggest a reaction or response to modernism in the late twentieth century. So
postmodernism can only be understood in relation to Modernism. Postmodernism describes both an
era and a broad movement that developed in the late 20th century across philosophy, the arts,
architecture and criticism which marked a departure from modernism. At its core, Postmodernism
rejects that which Modernism champions. While postmodernism seems very much like modernism
in many ways, it differs from modernism in its attitude toward a lot of these trends. Modernism, for
example, tends to present a fragmented view of human subjectivity and history, but presents that
fragmentation as something tragic, something to be lamented and mourned as a loss.
Postmodernism, in contrast, doesn t lament the idea of fragmentation, but rather celebrates it. In
literature, it used to describe certain characteristics of post World War II literature, for example, on
fragmentation, paradox, questionable narrators, etc. and a reaction against Enlightenment ideas
implicit in Modernist

The Media And Its Impact On Society
It has become common knowledge that in the last twenty years, the newspaper industry has
undergone a huge transformation. Once considered the primary and best way for communities to
transmit and receive world wide information, the business of printed news has taken suffered some
major setbacks. With the advent of the Internet age and the advancement of technology, printed
news sources and publishing companies have needed to redesign their business models and reform
certain aspects of their companies. In today s day and age, publishing companies are being forced
to redesign the way they market to customers and to incorporate the inclusion of digital sources in

In the market domain of newspapers, there are a handful of main companies that control the
majority of the industry. One of the major players remaining in the game of printed news is The
Tribune Publishing Company. Specifically, newspapers and publishers across the country have
been forced to make closures, cuts, lay offs, and ultimately find ways to evolve with the changing
times and embrace the digital world.
This has served as a crushing blow to a once thriving market. Numerous major newspapers no longer
exist, and others are just barely surviving and keeping their heads above water. The Tribune
Publishing Company has managed to weather the storm and continues to remain relevant. One of
Chicago s oldest and most well respected groups has found ways in which to adapt to the changing
environment and maintain sustainability in the tumultuous market of newsprint. A thorough
SWOT analysis demonstrates how this company has remained alive and how it will continue to
grow in the future.
One of the primary strengths of The Tribune Publishing Company is a long standing tradition of
excellence and business practice. The Tribune has been a reliable and honest source of information.

Feminism at Its Best
Gender roles have transformed throughout time, from the domestic womanhood of the 1920s to the
breadwinners of the 21st century. In A Jury of Her Peers, Susan Glaspell articulates the suffrage
women of her time had to endure brought on by the weaker sex stereotype that had plagued the
human brain for quite some time. Annenberg Learner states that the short storyis based on a true
event Susan Glaspellhad covered in 1900 while working as a reporter for Des Moines Daily News
(Annenberg Learner; Glaspell 179). At first, A Jury of Her Peers was known as a play by Glaspell
called Trifles. A year later, Susan Glaspell adapted the play in short story form and titled it A Jury
of Her Peers (Arp and Johnson 550). Susan Glaspell is known for her feminist writings
(Annenberg Learner). The theme, along with the addition of Glaspell s use of symbolism and
irony, transforms this piece of literature into a feminist classic. The overall theme of A Jury of
Her Peers is that stereotypes can hinder one s own judgment. Throughout the story, the county
attorney and Mr. Hale spits out sexist remarks toward the women characters of the short story.
For example, Mr. Hale remarks, But would the women know a clue if they did come upon it!
after the county attorney asked his wife to keep a look out for clues (Arp and Johnson 557).

A Single Financial Reporting Standard With Full Universal...
Establishment of a single financial reporting standard with full universal acceptance is unattainable
on various levels. Due to the prevailing economic, political, and cultural environments, it is
unconvincing and irrational to have a uniform set of global financial reporting standards. There are
controversies regarding the different types of economic systems used worldwide, centralizing the
major difference in the systems to be the governmental role and influence on market activity. For
there to be a proper measure in comparability in financial statementsthere is an intrinsic need for a
correlated set of economic activities along with an equivalent accounting system. If the US were to
adopt IFRS there is a questionable level to the amount of comparison we can recognize for nations
under different economic systems. Applying this even further, accounting under a new universal
regulation will have economic consequences; changes to regulation will inevitably lead to changes
to a nation s economy. With that said, IFRS is currently not compatible with US corporate
governance.
Countries, including the US, that decide to converge with IFRS yet function under different
economic and political environments will inherently implement the universal standard to fit their
institutional infrastructures diminishing comparability between nations (Hail). There are
significant differences in the foundation of US GAAP and IFRS, specifically IFRS s principles
based accounting and US GAAP s

Overfishing And Its Effects On The Environment
In today s world most people do not care about the environment. People abuse the natural resources
that we were given for their own benefit. It is estimated that 60 percent of the worlds population
lives within 60km of the coast and that each year more than 2 billion tons of carbon dioxide is
absorbed into the ocean. Almost all of the problems with the ocean are man made. Ocean heath has
deteriorated due to humans depleting fishsupplies, polluting the ocean, and a general lack of
knowledge about just how fragile the ocean is.
Overfishing is one of the largest and most relevant problems effecting ocean health today. It is
defined as The practice of commercial and non commercial fishing which depletes a fishery by

Over the past several decades, humans have caused the health of our ocean to decline considerably.
Along with climate change and ocean acidification, overfishing has destroyed many marine
ecosystems. In the 1990 s, one of the worlds most abundant cod populations was quickly destroyed.
The Newfoundland cod fishery had been one of the most productive cod fisheries in the world.
Fishing for cod in Newfoundland had dated back to the 16th century, when the amount of fish
seemed endless. The Canadians had traditionally fished sustainably for cod using small boats
and traditional methods such as jigging or small inshore gill nets, but in the 1950 s and 1960 s
other countries began to join in on the fishing, using larger boats and nets. England, U.S., The
Soviet Union, Spain, Portugal and Germany all joined in on the action, increasing the annual
catch from 250,000 tons to over 800,000 tons in 1968. From then on, the population slowly
began to decline. With so many being caught each year, the fish were no longer able to reproduce
as efficiently and renew their numbers to keep up with the demand. In addition to an increase in
the commercial fishing fleets, new fishing technologies were created to help catch as many fish as
possible. Larger nets that dragged along the bottom were created to catch every possible fish.
These nets were killing young fish, other marine life, and the food source for the cod, which
eventually led to the entire

Benefits Of A Pension Fund
Introduction
A pension fund, also known as a superannuation fund or super fund is any plan, fund, or scheme
which provides retirement income. A pension fund is established by a company, governmental
institution or labour union to pay for the (future) pension benefits of retired workers.
Superannuation funds collect retirement savings from workers and their employers, and invest this
money in a wide range of assets. Because pension funds manage the money of up to millions of
individuals, they are major players in the financial markets. Australian superannuation funds are
major investors in the domestic and global capital markets.
Other than a few very specific provisions in the Superannuation Industry funds are not subject to
any asset requirements or investment exposure flaws. There are no minimum rate of return
requirements, nor a government guarantee of benefits. There are some minor restrictions on
borrowing and the use of derivatives and investments in the shares and property of employer
sponsors of funds. As a result, superannuation funds tend to invest in a wide variety of assets with a
mix of duration and risk/return characteristics.
In an efficient market at any point in time the actual price of a security will be a good estimate of
its intrinsic value. An efficient market is defined as a market where there are large numbers of
rational, profit maximizers actively competing, with each trying to predict future market values of
individual securities, and where

An Age Of Informational Starvation
We are living in an age of informational starvation. People are seeking for something that is
attractive and glowing to see on their screens. Advertisers found that possibility as an opportunity

possible to stop on one commercial, which is called Cristiano Ronaldo vs. Rafael Nadal, which is

A Simple Game of Catch
Though time goes on and experiences past, the memories live on and forever they last. Life is a
gift of beauty yet sometimes that gift can be tarnished by the darkness of pain. However, it s the
simple aspects of life that truly define who we are as individuals. A simple gameof catch is all it
ever took to make that darkness of life fade. A simple game of catch is all it ever took to bring back
the happiness that had been taken away. A simple game of catch is all it ever took. Baseballhas been
an important aspect of my life. Ever since childhood, I ve played the great game that I ve come to
love and hate. Though I have risen and fallen in my abilities, I still find a way to play the game.
When I was a child, I started my experiences of baseball by playing catch with my father in the
front yard of my house. We threw and we caught and we smacked our gloves the repeat the
process once again. Playing catch gave us a way to relax, a way to talk, and a way to connect.
When we threw to each other, it gave me a chance to train in my abilities and it gave my father a
way to relive his own childhood. Yet, as time went on and my interests changed, playing catch
became a thing in the past. Gone. Everything gone. My childhood faded, my dreams jaded, and my
innocence traded. Friends turned away laughing as I asked myself, What had just happened? Acting

Reliable DNA analysis is also important in the management of wild life. In the case of
Wedrowicz, the koala population is being threatened and the need for data on their genetic
diversity is of extreme importance. However obtaining the DNA from the koala is not a simple
task, this is due to cost, stress, and ethics of capturing a koala. Sometimes the only way to obtain
a sample of DNA is by the collection of scats. This means that once the DNA sample is obtained it
must be rushed to the lab for extraction while the sample is still fresh. Obtaining this DNA can
allow for analysis of population, breeding, and habitat of not only koalas, but of many other
mammals (Wedrowicz, Faye, 2013).

Subfields Of Anthropology
Anthropologists study how cultures shape and identify people, how evolution and the environment
change us, and the ways that humans throughout time have communication and integrated with one
another. Anthropologists seek to understand how humans have changed over time as well as how
cultures relate to one another in traits that are either universal or unique. There are four subfields of
anthropology.
Archaeology is the study of what has been left behind by various peoples since the beginning of
mankind. This includes studying objects like pottery, jewelry, and tools, as well as mapping out
houses and other structures. Examining skeletal remains can help us find out what kind of diet
someone had and what kind of diseases they may have suffered from. We can also see how they
interacted with the natural environment, such as building dams, building monolithic monuments
out of stone, and carving temples out of cliffsides.

The process of digestion...
A.Burger
To begin the process of digestion the burger must be chewed up, this is a form of mechanical
digestion. The saliva produced is used to break up foods into smaller pieces so it is made easier
to swallow, this is using chemical digestion. After being swallowed it travels down the esophagus,
at the end of the esophagus is a muscular ring which allows food to enter the stomach. After
entering it squeezes shut keeping fluid and food from flowing back up. Inside of the stomach,
stomach muscles churn and mix the burger where digestive acids and enzymes are created to help
break the burger down into a liquid or paste. Once broken down it leaves the stomach and enters the
small intestine. As the thick liquid food

Government Have Too Much Power
Does the Government have too much power?
More than half of the citizens of the United States believe that the government has more power than
they should. This amount is the highest it has ever been and it continues to grow each and every
year. Trusting your government is crucial to building a solid country. If the United States
government is becoming more untrustworthy, the country is sure to fall apart at its seams. The
government has too much control over people because they are constantly watching with cameras
and electronics, they can kidnap or kill you without anyone ever knowing what happened, and they

They constantly disregard the people s privacy and there personal life. In his essay Civil
Disobedience Henry David Thoreau, speaks on how a free society would be much better than
one that is harshly governed. He is a strong believer that people should do what they think is
right and wrong, not what the government tells you to do. If a plant cannot live according to its
nature, it dies; and so a man (Thoreau). He states that a man should do what he thinks is morally
right. He uses a simile to say that nature functions on it s own with it s own set of rules, as should
a man. If nature has been self sustaining for as long as the world has been around, Thoreau
strongly believes that a man should live by his own rules for the short amount of time that he is
alive on this planet and things will go much smoother than they have in the past. He thinks that the
government abuses their power a lot in the sense of security or privacy. Government is best that
governs least (Thoreau). Thoreau says that a government that does not get into the business of its
citizens is the best and, most successful kind. He strongly dislikes government and believes that
one day there should be no government at all and the people will rule themselves. Thoreau says
that the government is much too powerful and they abuse their excessive power all too often. He

As with all things, it takes some hard work and effort to keep your garden looking good.
However, there are a few ways to make your maintenance work in the garden quick and easy. 1.
Get the pH of your soil by taking it to your local garden center or even your agriculture
department of the local college or county co op. By formulating your soil to fit your needs, you
will have the best looking garden around. Adding compost and even organic fertilizers are a
great choice for maintaining your garden soil. If you can get the pH right, your plants should
last for ages. 2. Keep like minded plants together based on needs. You should try to keep plants
that need water in one particular area while plants with fewer water needs should be planted in
another place. The same principle goes for sunshine as well. Some plants just need a little bit of
sun while others need the shade. Keeping like minded plants together takes the guessing out of
maintenance. 3. Choose raised bed containers for a controllable approach to gardening. The
raised beds allow for easier weed control as well as the proper drainage, fertilizer, watering and
more. Plus, you don t have to get on your hands and knees to care for your plants. 4. Mulching is
important to plants. Not only is it a material that looks good but also does some great things for
your place as well. For instance, mulch is not only attractive but

Noel Sharkey s The Ethical Frontiers Of Robotics
Robots are built to serve a purpose and make life easier, so why not use them as helpers? Noel
Sharkey, a professor of computer science at the University of Sheffield in England, claims that
robots are not suitable to fulfill some of the peoples tasks. In his article, The Ethical Frontiers of
Robotics , Sharkey claims that the use of robots as guardians for children is unhealthy, that robots
can not take care of elders because elders need, human contact , and that robots should not be
used in the military because they could not figure out their enemies. I disagree with Sharkey

Sharkey asserts that the elderly need human attention that can only be provided by human
caregivers. This illustrates that Sharkey is against having robots taking care of elders. Yet in his
article, he also states that robots are now being built with the expression of emotion, language
interaction, speech perception, and face recognition (358). Therefore, this statement by Sharkey
fails to prove his point because now robots can provide some form of human attention . About
two years ago, I used to visit my grandfather at the hospital. Every single time i went there, I
witnessed this old, sad man. This man never got any visitors. Even though he had a carver, he kept
being grumpy and unhappy. Why not built him a robot that would provide a 24/7 entertainment
service? Human contact will not make this man happy, but maybe a robot with a built in
entertainment can. What if an elder had a irresponsible caregiver that forgot to remind him to take
his medicine. Sharkey includes in his articles that there are robots that can complete such tasks. In
the end, robots are robots, they will always perform these tasks because there is no robot on this
planet that is considered irresponsible.A war without the use of machines would result in the death
of more human soldiers. Sharkey declares that robots cannot distinguish between a civilian and an

Catcher In The Rye Events
The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger described various events, some of which were very
significant toward the plot and ultimately the protagonist, Holden Caulfield. Events such as the
death of Holden s brother, Allie, his visit to a hotel and a nightclub in New York City and his
meeting with Phoebe at the end of the book are such events as they help the reader understand the
viewpoint of Holden, such as his depression, thoughts on certain topics such as death, and his
change in the book which was integral in helping the reader understand the plot. Therefore, events
portrayed in the book such as Allie s death, Holden s visit to the hotel and the club, and his

One extremely important reason why was because at that point he was thinking of running away
due to his depression but when he was going to give Phoebe a letter stating his decision, he saw
a bunch of curse words etched into the walls of the school and tried to remove them with anger,
stating I kept wanting to kill whoever d written it. I figured it was some perverty bum that d
sneaked into the school late at night to take a leak or something and then wrote it on the wall.
(pg. 221), showing that these words made Holden want to protect Phoebe, and gave him
something to live for. In addition, when he found out that Phoebe planned to follow him to run
away, he stated: I almost hated her. I think I hated her most because she wouldn t be in that play
anymore if she went away with me, (pg. 227). This showed maturity, because it meant that
Holden actually understood the ramifications of his actions, in this case running away leading to
consequences for Phoebe, and so he decided against it. When he saw Phoebe on the carrousel, he
became extremely happy, something he had not felt for a very long time as he stated: I felt so
damn happy all of a sudden, the way Phoebe kept going around and around, (pg.233). This clearly
demonstrated that this event ultimately changed Holden, perhaps for the better, as it gave him a

A Brief Note On Disasters, Vulnerability And Risk

COURSE: MA/MSC IN DISASTER MANAGEMENT (2015 17)
PAPER: MDM2 Disasters, Vulnerability and Risk
Introduction:
Disaster has become the most emerging topic of recent times. But managing them totally is still not
being possible even by the developed countries. Different scholars defined the term differently. A
disaster is a serious disruption of the functioning of a community or a society involving widespread
human, material, economic or environmental losses and impacts, which exceeds the ability of the
affected community or society to cope using its own resources. In contemporary academia,
disasters are seen as the consequence of inappropriately managed risk. These risks are the product
of a combination of both hazard/s and vulnerability. Hazards that strike in areas with low
vulnerability will never become disasters, as is the case in uninhabited regions. Developing
countries suffer the greatest costs when a disaster hits more than 95 percent of all deaths caused
by hazards occur in developing countries, and losses due to natural hazards are 20 times greater
(as a percentage of GDP) in developing countries than in industrialized countries. Disasters are
again classified among categories like Natural Disaster and Man Made Disaster. A natural hazard
is a natural process or phenomenon that may cause loss of life, injury or other health impacts,
property damage, loss of livelihoods and

Unlike other musical forms it did not evolve in relation to other music developments. The

Later on in the years, people tried to introduce opera into England from France and Italy. This

An example of this would be the Apple Pay technology. Apple Pay is a mobile payments service
and digital wallet application that utilizes Near Field Communication (NFC) to initiate secure
payment transactions between contactless payment terminals and devices like the iPhone 6,
iPhone 6 Plus and Apple Watch (Webopedia). Apple Pay allows owners of Apple devices the
opportunity to add multiple credit or debit cards onto that device and instantly pay at a location
by simply placing their device over the scanner. This technology could be implemented into
Howard University s Bison One Card by adding Dining Dollars or Bison Bucks into the
application software, thus eliminating the need to always swipe your card at various locations
around campus. This would also eliminate the struggle some students encounter of not being able
to eat or swipe into the cafГ© because they have lost or misplaced their card. The biggest
problem Howard University faces with implementing this new technology is the substantial cost.
Blue Pay breaks down the Apple Pay implementation costs with prices of the NFC terminals in
range from $300 to $500, excluding the cost of additional software upgrades if needed. Depending
on which locations, if not all, across campus will support this technology, this cost will surely add
up. Merchants must also weigh in the cost of employee training. Employees must understand how
to properly use NFC contactless readers to process payments. The training should also include
refunds, chargebacks, and cancellations. This cost can vary, depending on the size of the staff.
Blue Pay ultimately estimates the total cost ranging anywhere from $1000 to $2000 per unit after
factoring in hardware, software and wages (Blue

origin. The Upanishads are a representation of ancient India and Herodotus originates from
Greece. It is noted, that the Greeks originally settled in Greece due to its abundance of gold and
silver. Whereas, Indians settled in India due to the topography or the terrain of the land. India s

mentions this belief through a series of narratives rather metaphors, that stress the point that a

Aron s tragic accident allowed him to reconsider his relationship with his peers. The director
Danny Boyle provides cinematic techniques such as close ups, side views, birds eye views and
point of views to capture the different family occurrences in Ralston s life. An example is when
Danny Boyle provides the audience with a close up of Ralston s phone box whilst a message
from his mother plays through, giving no attention Ralston ignores the message. This allows the
audience to view Aron as a very isolated person who does not give attention to his loved ones
such as his mother. Another cinematic technique that has significance is when a flashback of
Ralston and his dad is played through, they are seen to be sitting upon a canyon with eyes
focused into the distance. This resembles his close relationship with his Dad which can be
compared with his Mothers relationship as he regrets all of his bad decisions. The audience is

All the literature of this century is somewhat burdened by the theme of uprootedness, (Arenas, 36)
which means every piece of literature surrounded the system of being exiled or the fear of being

The book opens to the succulent, splendor forest, full of vivid emotion and color where Arenas
started the beginning of his life in Oriente Province, Cuba. The setting is one of poverty, but the
natural world around him seemed to be beautiful and dazzling. Arenas shows this by saying, The
splendor of my childhood was unique because of its absolute poverty and absolute freedom
surrounded by trees, animals, and people who are indifferent towards me (Arenas 332). This quote
foreshadows the rest of the story in that Reinaldo soon faces indifference from other people
because he is unique and is doing something a different way . Also, this quotation points out the
wonderful time he had as a child where there seemed to be opportunity, before Fidel Castro came
into power restricting most rights. Furthermore, Arenas was free as a child and was uplifted by
the cognitive nature of opportunity, but as he got older the setting started to change and dreams
were tarnished and opportunity was thrown away by political interference. Reinaldo Arenas
childhood was the only time of happiness and immaculacy and throughout the rest of the story
Arenas is on a desperate search for enchantment in his once short lived paradise. As Arenas states
in the book, These, to be sure, were farfetched hopes, hopes born of despair, but hope is, after all,
mostly for the desperate (Arenas 260). This quote purely gives an edge to Arenas personality,

The Mental Destruction of Blanche Dubois Essay
Tennessee William s play A Street Car Named Desire offers a glimpse into the harsh reality faced
by single southern woman in the 1940s. The 1940s was a time when females were viewed as
delicate and fragile; therefore, it was understood that a male companion was a necessity to keep
them safe and secure (Cook 84). The character of Blanche Duboisembodies the 1940s distressed
female as she struggles with her environment. She is battling guilt, loneliness and financial
insecurity when she arrives in Elysian Fields. Critics and audiences alike have mixed reactions to
Blanche and her role as the tragic protagonist. In The Space of Madness and Desire Anne Fleche
suggests Blanche is mad from the outset of the play. Others such as Leonard... Show more content

He suggests they could be there for one another because Blanche needs somebody too (116). To
Mitch s suggestion she replies with relief, Sometimes there s God so quickly! (116). She feels as
though all of her needs and wants have been answered, giving her hope for a secure future.
Blanche needs Mitch as a stabilizing force in her life; if her relationship with him fails, she
knows she faces a world that offers few prospects for a financially challenged, unmarried woman
approaching middle age. She tacitly admits to Mitch that she needs him when she accepts his
embrace, but her fears of acknowledging her past and current situation overpower her and prevent
her from telling the full truth. She hides her past not only from Mitch, but also from herself
because to acknowledge it is to also admit the unhealthy choices she has made. When Stanley tells
Mitch about Blanche s blemished past Mitch recognizes that Blanche s deceptions have relied on
a symbolic and literal darkness which obscures reality. When Mitch asks Blanche to be honest
about herself she says, I don t want realism. I want Magic! I don t tell truth, I tell what ought to be
the truth (145). In these lines Blanche clearly expresses her desire not to deal with reality; this
inability to face her circumstances signifies that Blanche is not recovering from her mental stress,
but rather descending further into it. Blanche becomes desperate and delusional and her descent
into mental

Bill Bryson
Author, Bill Bryson, in the book, Neither Here Nor There: Travels in Europe takes his readers on
a journey backpacking around Europe. Bryson s purpose is to indicate the contrast between
Luxembourg and American cities, specifically, New York City. He maintains an energetic and
humorous tone throughout the text in order to illustrate his experience and feelings of
admiration to the American readers. Bryson begins his story by recounting his first day in
Luxembourg. He recalled his experience by saying, I felt like someone stepping out of doors for
the first time. Bryson felt like this because countless things in Luxemburg were different than
what American cities have to offer. He used a simile, by saying he felt like someone stepping out
of doors for the first time, in order to make the description more relatable and vivid to the
audience. A simile is when an author compares two things using like or as; it causes the audience
to be able to sense... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He says, They don t know anything about the New York Yankees, they don t know the theme
tune to the Mickey Mouse Club, they are from another world. Bryson uses a hyperbole when he
says they are from another world to magnify the separation in the two lifestyles. Hyperbole is
used when an author exaggerates a basic statement in order to have the audience consider the
distinction. The people of Luxembourg are from another country; they are not from another world.
Bryson began his story by describing how overwhelmed he was when he discovered that many
things in Luxemburg were completely different than in New York. He continued to list many of
these contrasts. At the end of the second paragraph, he realized that the people of Luxembourg
probably have never seen what makes up New york. Bryson ends the story by expressing that the
two countries are completely different and adds that it is

The Roman Republic
For Centuries the Roman Republic was ruled over by some twenty families of Patricians , these
families represented the upper crust of society, a society which prided itself on the continuation of
the family line. This system was threatened by the ideology of novitas which people achieved glory
not from there illustrious family history, but through merit. Cato the Elder and Gaius Mariuswere
not born of noble stock and thus represent two of the best examples of novus homo in action.
The Roman Republic s system was heavily stacked against a novus homo from the period of
200BC 100BC only 29 Consuls were of Plebeian background, which alludes to the fact the
having a good family genealogy, would undoubtedly benefit one political career. The Scipionic
epitaph of Scipio Baratus details the successes of a great Roman, who s honour and bravery, as
well as his occupation of the Aedileship, and the Consulship ultimately helped spring board the
career of his son Lucius Cornelius Scipio . From this we can see that fama, gloria, and a good
family background greatly help ones political ambitions, Marius and Cato both came from a
Plebeian background of which Marius took pride in going as far as accusing the aristocracy of
bitterness by despising him since he reached the Consulship without family connections or glory.
There might have been jealousy, and envy amongst the aristocracy that there rightful place was
being usurped by an outsider a Pleb

The Truth about Marie Antoinette
Marie Antoinette was born on November 2, 1755, in Vienna, Austria. Marie Antoinette was a
queen that ruled with a powerful, wealthy, fist. She was a foreign wife and queen once she married
King Louis XVI of France. Throughout her rule over France, Marie Antoinette was kept under a
light of ignorance by the people, and therefore, should not be blamed for their suffering, the French
Revolution, and the failures of her husband. She was hated by the people of France the moment
she became queen, which ultimately led her to her downfall. Queen Marie Antoinette is known
for her infamous quote let them eat cake , in a scandal where she supposedly turned a blind eye
to the famished. The people of France pointed their fingers at Marie Antoinette, and believed she
frankly participated in the scandal they accused her of: the scandal that led to her death by
guillotine: the Affair of the Diamond Necklace. Marie Antoinette was also blamed for The French
Revolution and the suffering of the poor people, but the citizens of France were already poor long
before she became queen. The French Revolution was a time of political and social disruption, and
the change of their absolute monarchy. Marie Antoinette was part of the monarchy, so she was
disliked, but she was not the cause of The French Revolution. Her husband, King Louis XVI, made

In the 1990 s, one of the worlds most abundant cod populations was quickly destroyed. The Newfoundland cod fishery had been one of the most productive cod fisheries in the world. Fishing for cod in Newfoundland had dated back to the 16th century, when the amount of fish seemed endless. The Canadians had traditionally fished sustainably for cod using small boats and traditional methods such as jigging or small inshore gill nets, but in the 1950 s and 1960 s other countries began to join in on the fishing, using larger boats and nets. England, U.S., The Soviet Union, Spain, Portugal and Germany all joined in on the action, increasing the annual catch from 250,000 tons to over 800,000 tons in 1968. From then on, the population slowly began to decline. With so many being caught each year, the fish were no longer able to reproduce as efficiently and renew their numbers to keep up with the demand. In addition to an increase in the commercial fishing fleets, new fishing technologies were created to help catch as many fish as possible. Larger nets that dragged along the bottom were created to catch every possible fish. However, there are a few ways to make your maintenance work in the garden quick and easy. 1. Get the pH of your soil by taking it to your local garden center or even your agriculture department of the local college or county co op. By formulating your soil to fit your needs, you will have the best looking garden around. Adding compost and even organic fertilizers are a great choice for maintaining your garden soil. If you can get the pH right, your plants should last for ages. 2. Keep like minded plants together based on needs. You should try to keep plants that need water in one particular area while plants with fewer water needs should be planted in another place. The same principle goes for sunshine as well. Some plants just need a little bit of sun while others need the shade. Keeping like minded plants together takes the guessing out of maintenance. 3. Choose raised bed containers for a controllable approach to gardening. The raised beds allow for easier weed control as well as the proper drainage, fertilizer, watering and more. Plus, you don t have to get on your hands and knees to care for your plants. 4. Mulching is important to plants. Noel Sharkey, a professor of computer science at the University of Sheffield in England, claims that robots are not suitable to fulfill some of the peoples tasks. This illustrates that Sharkey is against having robots taking care of elders. Yet in his article, he also states that robots are now being built with the expression of emotion, language interaction, speech perception, and face recognition (358). Therefore, this statement by Sharkey fails to prove his point because now robots can provide some form of human attention . About two years ago, I used to visit my grandfather at the hospital. Every single time i went there, I witnessed this old, sad man. This man never got any visitors. Even though he had a carver, he kept being grumpy and unhappy. Why not built him a robot that would provide a 24/7 entertainment service? Human contact will not make this man happy, but maybe a robot with a built in entertainment can. What if an elder had a irresponsible caregiver that forgot to remind him to take his medicine. Sharkey includes in his articles that there are robots that can complete such tasks. Salinger described various events, some of which were very significant toward the plot and ultimately the protagonist, Holden Caulfield. Events such as the death of Holden s brother, Allie, his visit to a hotel and a nightclub in New York City and his meeting with Phoebe at the end of the book are such events as they help the reader understand the viewpoint of Holden, such as his depression, thoughts on certain topics such as death, and his change in the book which was integral in helping the reader understand the plot. Therefore, events portrayed in the book such as Allie s death, Holden s visit to the hotel and the club, and his meeting with Phoebe at the end of the book all played significant parts in the book.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One extremely important reason why was because at that point he was thinking of running away due to his depression but when he was going to give Phoebe a letter stating his decision, he saw a bunch of curse words etched into the walls of the school and tried to remove them with anger, stating I kept wanting to kill whoever d written it. I figured it was some perverty bum that d sneaked into the school late at night to take a leak or something and then wrote it on the wall. (pg. 221), showing that these words made Holden want to protect Phoebe, and gave him something to live for. In addition, when he found out that Phoebe planned to follow him to run away, he stated: I almost hated her. I think I hated her most because she wouldn t be in that play anymore if she went away with me, (pg. 227). This showed maturity, because it meant that Holden actually understood the ramifications of his actions, in this case running away leading to consequences for Phoebe, and so he decided against it. When he saw Phoebe on the carrousel, he became extremely happy, something he had not felt for a very long time as he stated: I felt so damn happy all of a sudden, the way Phoebe kept going around and around, (pg.233). This clearly demonstrated that this event ultimately changed Holden, perhaps for the better, as it gave him a reason to live, and to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

But managing them totally is still not being possible even by the developed countries. Different scholars defined the term differently. A disaster is a serious disruption of the functioning of a community or a society involving widespread human, material, economic or environmental losses and impacts, which exceeds the ability of the affected community or society to cope using its own resources. In contemporary academia, disasters are seen as the consequence of inappropriately managed risk. These risks are the product of a combination of both hazard/s and vulnerability. Hazards that strike in areas with low vulnerability will never become disasters, as is the case in uninhabited regions. Developing countries suffer the greatest costs when a disaster hits more than 95 percent of all deaths caused by hazards occur in developing countries, and losses due to natural hazards are 20 times greater (as a percentage of GDP) in developing countries than in industrialized countries. Disasters are again classified among categories like Natural Disaster and Man Made Disaster. A natural hazard is a natural process or phenomenon that may cause loss of life, injury or other health impacts, property damage, loss of livelihoods and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Apple Pay allows owners of Apple devices the opportunity to add multiple credit or debit cards onto that device and instantly pay at a location by simply placing their device over the scanner. This technology could be implemented into Howard University s Bison One Card by adding Dining Dollars or Bison Bucks into the application software, thus eliminating the need to always swipe your card at various locations around campus.
