New York City Taxicab Medallion Value Analysis
This report, entitled New York City Taxicab Medallion Value Analysis, presents key facts and
data of New York City medallion transfer transactions from January 2016 to April 2017. The
review and analysis in this report are based on information provided by the New York City Taxi
and Limousine Commission ( TLC ), primary data collected from NYC taxi medallion brokers,
and supplemental information gathered from various sources in the for hire vehicle ( FHV )
industry in NYC. Our review was conducted using all transaction data which distinguishes the two
types of NYC taxi medallions: independent and corporate (also known as mini fleet).
The authors of this report (See Appendix B for the authors biographical information) include a wide

In determining the FMV of both classes of NYC medallions, we analyzed the various
methodologies for calculating the estimated value of the medallion and found the approach used in
this report, the income approach, to be the most concrete based on factual data to render this type of
assessment. As such, the analysis in this report is limited to, and only should be adopted
holistically with, the pertinent qualifying parameters.
After an extensive review of all applicable datasets and information, we conclude that the taxicab
medallion values for the period for January 2016 to April 2017, calculated using the discounted
cash flow methodology, were $550,000 and $1,108,000, respectively.
The subsequent sections of the report will: (1) provide an overview of the NYC taxi medallion
market and new market entrants impact on the taxi industry; (2) identify the best approach to
determine medallion valuation (3) analyze data gathered using discounted cash flow to assess
valuation of both classes of medallions.
I. BACKGROUND OF NYC TAXI MEDALLION
In the late 1930s, New York City introduced yellow taxi medallions to curb the oversupply of
taxicab vehicles and drivers entry into what was an all cash business, and to limit the impact of
traffic congestion, fare cutting wars and other unsafe (and sometimes illegal) activities. In 1937, the

The Money By Junot Diaz Summary
Reading The Money by Junot Diaz gave me the impression that Diaz was raised in a strict but
disciplined household. There are many parallels between my life and Junot Diaz s life. We both
came from low income families struggling for that pesky paycheck. When we did receive that
paycheck, most of it ended up going back to our homelands to support the familywe had left behind
and or pay off the houses we owned or rented there. We both lived in the rough parts of our
neighborhoods where the recently moved in immigrants were victim to robberies and cons.
Coincidentally, I experienced a very similar situation that Junot Diaz described in his story.
In The Money, Diaz and his family were struggling to attain money. His mother was always getting

President Woodrow Wilson s First Modern Ministry For...
Political philosopher John Locke observed that people will relinquish power to government with
an explicit or implicit trust that the leaders will act for the public good i.e. the good of every
particular member of that society (105). However, it is recognized that trust is not given in
perpetuity and can be removed over time, especially when the people s rights are violated (Koven
90). As distrust grows towards government and the people speak out, government has proven it
will take drastic action to influence public opinion. For example, after he broke his promise to
keep America out of war, President Woodrow Wilson
created the first modern ministry for
propaganda in the West suppressed dissent and resistance.
As the 28th President of the United States of America, Woodrow Wilson served two terms from
March 1913 to March 1921. He was nominated by his party at the 1912 Democratic Convention
where he campaigned on a program called the New Freedom, which stressed individualism and
states rights (Freidel). Once elected, Wilson faced the decision of the nation s involvement in the
ongoing conflict between rival blocs of Great European Powers: the Austro Hungarian Empire and
Germany on one side and France, Russia and Great Britain on the other (Butcher).
During his first term, Wilson exclusively expressed neutrality. For instance, on October 27, 1913 in
Mobile, AL before the Southern Commercial Congress, Wilson stated, that the United States will

The Fredrick Douglass An American Slave
When people learn that an education can give oneself freedom, power, and knowledge oneself
can conquer any problem that comes its way. It is oneself responsibility to take advantage of its
free education that I and everyone is given here in the United States. It seems people that are
restricted from receiving an education are the ones that are determined to do whatever it takes
to get an education so oneself can improve one s life. I read the Fredrick Douglass an American
Slave. It seemed a bit harsh the way he was treated. He had a mistress that wanted to teach him
how to read and learn his ABCs but when her husband found out what she was doing he said to

An Organization s Performance Management Plan Essay
Introduction
According to Caldwell (2002, pp 8), performance management is defined as a proactive partnership
between employees and management that helps employees perform at their best and alight their
contributions with the goals, values and initiatives of the organisation .
High performing organisations are created through individual accountability for both the
achievement of an organisation s results and its cultural foundation. Culture in its simplest terms is
how we do things around here . And while culture change needs to be led from the top, it is
everyone in the organisation s responsibility. The success balances on all employees being
accountable for achieving the organisation s goals, living the organisation s values and
demonstrating the right personal behaviour.
Factors involved in performance management
An organisation s performance management plan must identify the contributions each employee
makes in achieving the organisation s goals and objectives. Performance management is a continual
process that requires the engagement and participation of all involved. This is the process to create
a work environment where employees can perform their duties to the best of their abilities.
To be constituted as effective performance management, the following must be evident:
Employees must have a clear job description
A fair and equitable process and promote open lines of communication between the employee and
the employee s manager
Build employees

Compare And Contrast Nova Scotia And Acadians
The Acadians lived in Nova Scotia, part of the French dominion in North America. However,
France was not as interested on the territory where the Acadians lives, as they were in the mainland
territory of New France (present day Quebec). On the other hand, from an early date the British
showed interest on the territory where the Acadians were located. The territory of Nova Scotiais
located in a strategic geographic locations that is the entrance to New France. The British
attempted, unsuccessfully, three times to capture Acadia. However, on their fourth attempt they
were able to capture the territory. In The Treaty of Utrecht of 1713, the French succeeded Acadia to
the British. For the most part, the Acadians were allowed to continue with their

What Is Objective Reality In The Allegory Of The Cave
The correspondence theories of truth tell us that a belief is true if it corresponds to reality
(DeWitt par.14). And the reality must be totally objective and independent. But what actually is an
independent, objective reality? Aristotle had never witnessed any pure inertial motion. Of course
he wouldn t consider it as the objective reality . From his point of view, his belief that force is
needed to maintain a motion definitely corresponds to the reality. Our observations could have
inaccuracies or limitations. The so called observed reality also changes when observation
techniques improve. Although our beliefs may flawlessly match the observed reality , they can still
be wrong. In Socrates Allegory of the Cave, the prisoners can develop

Romeo And Juliet s Decisions
Love has the ability to influence actions, and these actions can be good or bad. Love itself is
generally not thought of as something harmful, but many times it can impair one s ability to think
clearly, and therefore prompt destructive decisions. Love is very powerful, and in Romeo and Juliet
by William Shakespeare, it proves to not only lead to happiness, but also tragedy in familial,
platonic, and romantic relationships throughout the play.
Although we do not see much of the Montague family, the Capulet parents are at the center of the
conflict. In the beginning, it is their love for Juliet that makes them arrange her marriage to Paris.
Every parent wants the best for their child, and the Capulets are no exception. What they do not
realize is that this marriage is not what Juliet wants, and their love and inability to accept their
daughter s decision is what ultimately leads Juliet to fix the situation herself. The Nurse, who is
more of a mother to Juliet than Lady Capulet, eventually betrays Juliet as well. The Nurse,
thinking she is comforting Juliet, advises her to forget about Romeo and marry Paris because he s
more attractive and more attainable. Juliet accepts this as the final straw, and she goes to Friar
Lawrence for help, which causes her fated death. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mercutio valued Romeo s honor so highly, that when tarnished, he was willing to fight to defend
his friend. This resulted in Mercutio s untimely death and grief for not only the Montagues but

his death, even though he knew he would face the consequences. Romeo s exile was a direct result
of Mercutio s actions, and he was pulled away from his home, his family, and his beloved

States, acting as an interpreter and guide. She traveled thousands of miles from North Dakota to
the Pacific Ocean between 1804 and 1806, while bearing child in her womb. The National
American Woman Suffrage Association of the early twentieth century adopted her as the
symbol of women s worth and independence, erecting several statues, and plaques in her memory,
and doing much to spread the story of her accomplishments. Born in 1788, probable early 1790

The Pros And Cons Of The Crusades
The Crusades were a series of wars inspired by conflicting religious ideologies, specifically
between Christians and Muslims. A series being, that between the years 1096 and 1291, nine major
military expeditions occurred. Christian Muslim interactions between the 1000 1500 centuries were
mostly negative then positive. The justification for war included securing and gaining control of the
holy lands or territories sacred to both groups (Damascus, The River Jordan, Jerusalem, and
numerous others) and to diffuse or universalize their religious ideologies to those living in the
eastern hemisphere. Jerusalem was considered the holiest of all sites, because it was significantly
important to both religions, in different ways. To Christians, Jerusalem represents; the place of
birth, ministry, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth, the Savior or Messiah to
Christianity. However, to Muslims, Jerusalem houses the Al Aqsa Mosque (the third holiest site in
Islam), in which they believe Muhammad was transported to during the Night Journey (a physical
and spiritual journey) from the Sacred Mosque in Mecca. Islamic hero or leader of the Crusades,
Saladin, is credited with re conquesting Jerusalem from the Christians, uniting Muslim fractions
and states, while enabling and promoting Islamic faith and practices to exist in Jerusalem. Saladin
was born in 1138, to a military family, in Tikrit (modern day Iraq). He gained his dominance among

2. Mechanical and electronic access control
Electronic access control
The next layer is mechanical includes gates, doors, and locks. Control of the locks becomes a
problem with large user populations and large user turnover. The use of keys can quickly become
unmanageable, thus forcing the adoption of electronic access control. The most desirable is
Electronic access control which easily manages large user populations, controlling the user
lifecycles times, dates, and individual access points.
Also, by using an additional sub layer of mechanical/electronic access control protection one can
reach a higher level of security, by integrating a key management system to manage the possession
and usage of mechanical keys to locks or property within a building or campus.
3. Intrusion detection
The third layer is intrusion detection systems or alarms. Intrusion detection monitors for attacks; it
is less of a preventative measure and more of a response measure, despite the fact that some would
argue it is a deterrent. Intrusion detection has a high incidence of false alarms and in many
jurisdictions, law enforcement will not respond to alarms from intrusion detection systems.
4. Video monitoring
Closed circuit television sign
The last layer is video monitoring systems. Like intrusion detection, these are not much of a
deterrent. Video monitoring systems are more

Technology And Civil Practices Of The Middle Eastern...
War is defined by the Webster dictionary as a state of usually open and declared armed hostile
conflict between states or nations , this definition does not apply to the current war in Afghanistan.
This war has been one of the most controversial wars in United States history, with one of the
biggest issues being how Afghanistanis being effected since it is not a part of the war as much as
a platform where it is taking place. For all the confusion, destruction, and loss during a war there
is a bright side in the unification and advancement of both technology and civil practices. This war
has been no different in the fact that technology has advanced exponentially, and the world has
begun to truly understand the customs and practices of the Middle Eastern States. The
improvement of technology has allowed the building of better agricultural equipment, which has
in turn given rise to better agricultural practices. Another thing that has changed both with a
change in personnel and a change in policies is the government of Afghanistan. The main driving
force for the change being seen is by the young people of Afghanistan who want the culture to
evolve in a more global manor. When all of these changes are looked at as a whole instead of
individually there is a clear trends that shows the growing economy of Afghanistan increasing at
the highest rate in 100 years. This paper will explore all of the issues and outcomes stated above

Mean Girls By Cady Heron
An adolescent is a young person who is the in the process of forming from a child into an adult.
The formation can result in physical changes, sexuality, a sense of self direction, and more.
During the movie Mean Girls a female adolescent by the name of Cady Heron who recently just
relocated to a new school and is put in a position where she must change her behavior, physical
features, and self direction to fit in with a popular group in school. Although Cady made friends
quite fast, it is her new friends that are persuading her to make these changes all to sabotage the
popular girls in school. Just like most adolescents do, Cady gets too far in over her head and
catches herself turning into one of the popular girls and quickly begins to act out. A change in
behavior can also be one of the biggest and noticeable changes that is made during the adolescent

The main point in his theory is that behavior is learned from the environment and the process of
observations. By this he means that adolescents are learning behavioral ways just by observing
their surroundings. Many individuals are influenced by family members and peer groups and
this theory really explains Heron in the movie because before moving to the new school, she
was raised in Africa around respectful family members and kind people. Heron quickly learned
that respecting your peers and doing your best in school work was the correct way to behave as
that is what she watched all her peers do in Africa. Although you can learn respectful ways by
viewing others actions, it can also cause an adolescent to act out in a worse

Confucianism In Vietnam Essay
Vietnam makes up a major part of Indochina, a region whose religions, philosophies, art, and
political organizations were dominated by India and China for two millennia (Buttinger 1968). The
region of Indochina retained its identity, despite the ideology of China that led to continual
interference in the region (Luttwak 2012). Indeed, different Chinese dynasties had made continual
efforts to invade and assimilate Vietnamfor around a thousand years before the first central feudal
government was formed in Vietnam in the early 11th century. Even after this period, Vietnam had
to continuously guard against the invasion of Chinese and Mongolian dynasties until the Tay Son

To guard against threats and the risk of assimilation from the Chinese, the Vietnamese had learned
from its northern neighbor to build strong centralized feudal governments along with tireless effort
to maintain friendly relations with China. The feudal government structure was largely borrowed
from China s model in which Confucianism was the main philosophy. A major reason why
Confucianism has become deeply rooted in Vietnam s society was that feudal courts found that it
was a reasonable philosophy to rule (Duiker 1995). To deal with wars or the threat of war, the need
for consolidated and centralized power was prominent. Therefore, there was not much time for
discussion or space for exercising democracy throughout Vietnam s history. The paternalistic style
has been the dominant mode of government in Vietnam. The role of the feudal government mainly
focused on defense and building irrigation systems the backbone of a wet rice economy. All
Vietnamese feudal courts treated China respectfully, and most of them sought recognition from
Chinese courts. After victories in wars with China, Vietnam s feudal courts always sent
ambassadors to China to seek reestablishment of friendly relationships. Furthermore, feudal
governments sometimes sought support from China s feudal courts to act against other external
forces, such

What would happen if whales disappeared from the earth? In the event it would be catastrophic. A
world without whales is a world which has lost part of the key to the ecosystem of itself. A gentle

Being Greeted with Death s Sting
Everyday someone is greeted with the sting of death. Sometimes it occurs with or without
warning. Either way, the hearts of the loved ones left behind are broken with despair. I have sent
flowers and consoled love ones. But, I didn t fully understand death s sting until took my
beloved Mother and Friend from my family. She was the glue that held me and my siblings
together throughout our adult years. It was our ritual to speak before I started and ended my
day. My Mother encouraged me to continue on through my storms. During my deployments, I
could count on her prayers. My Mother knew what words to speak to soothe me and she could
build me up with her understanding. I loved that she never took sides when my siblings and I
would have disagreements. She would remind us the importance of family ties. As a child, I
could remember coming home broken because I felt like an outcast. The children were cruel to
me. I was the kid in the home made dress or the plaid pants with the penny loafers. You see, my
Mother was a single parent raising five children. We lived in low income housing and she
worked several jobs to provide the essentials. In our home there were no name brand clothing
and hand me downs were the normality. She kept us feed, clean and a roof over our heads. My

The Disadvantages Of Artifice
Emily Olenik December 1, 2017 Ms. Dolan AP Language The Disavowal of Artifice As a
society we are guided by false veneers and deceit. Artifice is unfortunately a prominent tactic
used in hope of gaining the respect of the public. Politicians and celebrities who we look up to
utilize artifice on a daily basis to gain our recognition and approval. Even teenagers are being
taught how to use artifice to their advantage. Chris Hedges believes that the use of artifice is a
necessary device to achieve success. In his book, The Empire of Illusion, he discusses the
appeal of artifice and how individuals become unreal and ignored if they do not utilize it. His
viewpoint is immensely untrue because this strategy causes a never ending cycle of conflict. If
we continue to feign our true appearances, we will become unable to fix societal issues we face
to today. The celebrities in the media are typically portrayed as people we should look up to and
let guide us. They use artifice to make themselves come across and trustworthy and generous,
when in reality they are just the opposite. One serious problem has surfaced this year regarding
the sexual harassment of actresses in Hollywood. Producers, directors, and other actors have been
using artifice to keep their crimes a secret from the public. One of the most noteworthy examples is
the accusations made against film executive and producer, Harvey Weinstein. Over eighty women

Another significant factor of the similarities that these two leaders shared was their desire of
absolute power. After the collapse of the democratic parliament which was soon replaced by Hitler
and Mussolini s dictatorships, both leaders thought that once gained power, the parties which
helped them obtain such power would not have taken control of it and especially that they would
not have surrendered to their own parties. They were determined that the power was only theirs and
one way of showing it was by expanding their territories throughout foreign countries. In 1930

against Hitler s anti Semitist ideologies. Their main concentration was towards the supremacy of
the State, while the Nazi s one was the race. The Aryans, from Hitler s point of view, represented
the highest form of human race. Whereas Jews, Africans and people who had different human
identities such as homosexuals and the handicap were identified as a threat and as a dark and
powerful human kind. Hitler thought that the only way to dominate and destroy these races was
through the strength of the three myths. The first one known as the Reich regarded the Aryan
race, the second myth identified as the Volk indicated people of different social classes and the
last one called Fuhrer was a nickname given to the leader of the Germans, seen as the most
powerful and undiscussed person of the country. On the 25th of October 1935 after the
Nuremberg law, Jews were locked in rooms and were forced to work till they had no more energy

How Far Was the Provisional Government Responsible for Its...
When the Provisional Government came into power Russia was in a state of major unrest.
Russia had just overthrown the Tsarist regime, which had been in place for three hundred years
and there were multiple groups who wanted to take power for themselves such as Lenin s
Bolsheviks, they were fighting in an endless war and losing terribly, peasants where rebelling in
the countryside and the people were angered over food shortages. On top of all these problems
the Provisional Government was made up of members of the Duma who had no experience
actually being in charge or having power over anything let alone the biggest and most culturally
diverse country in the world. All these factors played a role in the downfall of the Provisional
Government but overall it was the Provisional Government who played the biggest part in their
own failure.
When started the Provisional Government was an interim government which was to govern Russia
until a new constitution was drawn up. But as soon as the Provisional Government was put in
charge it faced the immediate problem of legitimacy. It was made up of members of the Duma
and was dominated by members of the Octoberist and Kadet parties, who were minorities with
only one radical member, Alexander Kerensky. This would give the Provisional Government the
problem of not truly representing the people. If it was made up of minorities how can it represent
the majority? The Provisional Government also faced the problem of the All Russia Soviet. The

The Pros And Cons Of Vitamin D Deficiency
What is Vitamin D and Vitamin D Deficiency?
Vitamin D is a steroid vitamin which promotes the abdominal absorption and ingestion of Ca
(calcium) and P (phosphorus). Under normal conditions of an individual s exposure to sunlight, no
dietary supplements are necessary because sunlight promotes sufficient vitamin D composition in
the skin. Deficiency can lead to bone deformity in children and Osteomalacia in adults. (Medical
Definition of Vitamin D)
Vitamin D deficiency exists when the concentration of 25 hydroxyvitamin d in the blood serum
occurs at 12 ng/ml or less. (Medicine)

In the event that you figure you may have a deficiency, at that point it s vital that you address
your doctor and get your blood levels measured. Luckily, a vitamin D deficiency is generally
simple to settle. You can increase your sun exposure, eat more vitamin D rich foods or basically
take a supplement.

Septic Trucks
Septic pumping is a job that can go one of two ways: poorly or well. With appropriate equipment
that is well maintained and right for the job, a job should be accomplished quickly and easily.
When vehicle parts are not maintained or used properly, problems may happen. Other than the
pumps, the main trouble with any new or used septic trucks that are part of a work fleet are the
results of improper use and maintenance of the hoses. Equipment Working Together In order to
achieve the most efficient vacuum in a tank that will give the pump the power for strong suction,
the tank and pump must be appropriately sized to work together; a bigger tank or pump does not
necessarily work any better. An incorrectly matched pump and tank can cause hose... Show more

When too small, material can create too much friction on the inside and get clogged; when too
large, there can be too much air flowing into the tube and tank to allow for proper vacuuming.
Keeping all connected lengths of hose the same diameter the entire length is important to prevent
blockages. Keeping Hoses Working Naturally, a dirty suction line that is allowed to collect
material inside it when not regularly and properly cleaned is going to have a problem siphoning
anything. This problem is frequently experienced after purchasing used septic trucks as it is
impossible to know if a previous owner cleaned the hoses correctly. At best, vacuuming could be
inefficient; at its worst, it could stop altogether when the lines get clogged. The answer is to always
keep hoses stored clean and empty, although there is a definite trick to doing this. Normally,
operators can clear out dirty suction lines by keeping the pump on even when done working in
order to clear out any remaining material left in the hose when the pumps were shut down. Once
there is nothing left to vacuum, the pumps will no longer suction as there is not a vacuum in the
tank, although the tubes should be empty at that

Comedy And Social Ideas Of Norman Lear
Norman Lear was picked as a nominee for the prestigious Kennedy Center Award. Instead of
accepting the award, Lear decided to boycott the Kennedy Center ceremony in December at the
White House to protest Donald Trump presidency. Norman Lear has embodied the role as an agent
of change because throughout his life, he has been breaking societal norms and discussing issues in
society that people are afraid to talk about. Specifically, in 1971, a groundbreaking American
televisionsitcom broke through societal boundaries and transformed the way that the American
audience viewed television. Engulfed by the Vietnam War, Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and
1960s, fight for women s right, and the Watergate scandal, Norman Lear persevered through
stereotypes and entertainment norms with his show All in the Family. This show approached its
audience in a very blunt and crude manner; it made conflict the center of its comedy. It dealt with
contemporary cultural issues in a relatable way, which allowed blue collar workers to learn about
their current everyday issues and concerns. Therefore, from declining his Kennedy Center Award
because of his dislike for the President to breaking the taboos of television in the 1970s, Norman
Lear has remained a visible changemaker in our society.
Lear fused comedy and serious social issues together. All in the Family became the center of
national debate between comedy and social issues. Norman Lear helped to introduce social realism,

Summary Of Fanny Trollope s The Domestic Manners Of The...
Fanny Trollope, an English novelist and writer, travelled to America in the early 19th century for a
glimpse of life outside of England. In her work, The Domestic Manners of the Americans , Trollope
captured her experience in countless opinionated, highly critical observations that judged
Americans based on their behaviors and practices. Many aspects of Americanlife captured Trollope
s attention, but these aspects were not seen in a positive light. It was obvious through her story
that Trollope did not care for the American life; however, there seemed to be much more to
Trollope s opinions besides petty distastes. Trollope found the American lifestyle repulsive
because it seemed to revolve around pride in their impolite and offensive behavior, creating an
environment of arrogance and superiority over outsiders like herself. In the beginning of her
stay in America, Trollope was enjoying a cup of tea in her hotel when she was abruptly
confronted by the hotel s landlord. He knocked on her door and demanded that Trollope leave,
saying I cannot accommodate you on these terms; we have no family tea drinkings here, and you
must live either with me or my wife, or not at all in my house (Trollope 34). When Trollope tried
to explain that she was a foreigner and unaware of American customs, the landlord added Our
mannersare very good manners, and we don t wish any changes from England (Trollope 34). The
landlord s actions were uncalled for in Trollope s opinion; his authority and pride seemed almost
comical. He was so adamant about control over the room, yet the room itself was certainly not
anything noteworthy. The room was described by Trollope as being subpar, as it had no carpet,
and was darkened by blinds of paper (Trollope 33). The landlord took great pride in American
manners and seemed to think that any English practices were inferior. Ironically, in other parts of
her work, Trollope reported her experience in America to be one filled with awful mannered people.
She was disgusted with their poor manners, like the incessant, remorseless spitting of Americans
(Trollope 11). All of these factors combined led to her feeling totally unwelcome, stating that [the
landlord], in truth, strongly resembled

Feudalism In The Canterbury Tales
Geoffrey Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales was written during a time of societal change, away
from the stability of feudalism and towards an individualistic, mercantile economy. Feudalism
consisted of a static, rural economy where every member had a duty to serve those above them.
They valued the greater good and were not focused on gaining economically for their own
personal benefit. An era of change, however, began as events such as the Crusades opened up
trading opportunities which would eventually cause a shift in England, as the economy went
from being land based to money based. A mercantile class was on the rise as well as capitalism.
People were no longer driven to work by a sense of personal duty for the common good, but
rather for their own social and economic gain. Corruption of the Church during this time as well
increased, as church members were affected negatively by this changing economy. Many were
driven by greed as well and took on immoral approaches towards their church positions. Vows and
church teachings were disregarded as indulgences and materialism became the main focus of many
in the clergy. Through his satirical portrayal of his characters in CanterburyTales, Chaucer explores
issues such as the changing economy and corruption of the church in order to expose and criticize
the wrongdoings and values of his shifting society caused by the end of feudalism during this time.
A changing economy produced a transformation in the beliefs of citizens, who chose

Analysis Of David Lynch s Blue Velvet
David Lynch s Blue Velvet is an illustration of a fantasy world full of seduction, desire and death.
It explores the corrupted desires of society, while counterbalancing between its subconscious and
social world. The film disrupts all nostalgic knowledge we have of American suburbia by
juxtaposing the fluidic norms of genderand socioeconomic roles. As well as evoke neurotic
notions of masculinity. However the construction of women being used as agents to the physical
and social desires of men, create an empirical judgment on the perpetuance of male dominance and
their ability to comply with societal rules. When examined from this logic, the men in Blue Velvet
are constantly seen and shown as aggressors, and perpetrators of women s demise. The film begins
by vividly painting American suburbia through the depiction of their socioeconomic archetypes.
Within the opening credits, the audience is welcomed by the neighborhood fireman waving to his
surrounding neighbors, the blocks crossing guard safely crossing the children across the street, the
morning s blue sky looking down onto a white picked fence and blooming red tulips reaching up
high. The film vividly paints life in suburbia. Then suddenly we see a manbeing struck by natural
causes, and a woman who is glued to her television unaware of her surrounding world. The climax
of the film begins by establishing the protagonist, Jeffery s fatalities, and establishes his predestined
journey into complying into societies

use of various geological methods in examining individual sedimentary units in order to work
out the environment that would have existed at the time of their deposition millions of years
ago, and therefore we have constructed a history of environmental changes for the area over a
large scale of time, such as the rise and fall of sea level and the co occurring increase and
decrease of temperatures as a result, which has given us a better understanding of how the planet s
environments change over time and how ours is changing at the present day. Introduction

The Parent Trap Essay
The Parent Trap is a film from 1998 that takes place in London, Napa (California) and Maine.
First it begins in the Summer Camp in Maine, where two redheads Annie and Hallie

have lived apart, but not only from each other also from their parents. As well they decided to

in this movie the actress was Hayley Mills. This film has the same story of the one of Lindsay

movies are good, but honestly, IВґd rather watch the one of Lindsay Lohan. Supposing you never

Comparing Macbeth And Goold s Play
Macbeth, a play written by Shakespeare in 1606 is a tragedy surrounding a man Macbeth as he
unknowingly seals his own fate due to his own excessive ambition and greed. This tragedy has
since been taken to the big screen by many, one of which is director Rupert Goold. In 2010
Goold released a television film version of play on the BBC. Despite the differences between the
two, the movie does effectively convey the overall message of the original story.
In Goold s version, we see pivotal moments such as the breaking of Macbeth and Lady Macbeths
bond. This moment is stressed just as much in the film as it is in the play because not only does
it show the breaking of such a strong bond, but it also leads into another important moment in
which Lady Macbeth is starting to get sort of delirious. The film also keeps up with the play and
how it makes sure to highlight certain symbols and motifs such as blood and darkness through
setting and lighting choice, special effects, staying true to the lines, etc. the director even goes as
far as to reinforce death through a different motif (dead children). As well as using dead bodies as
apparitions. All together the director has combined all these elements of the play to work well in
film and show the original theme/message of the play appropriately. ... Show more content on

weaponry/methods of fighting. But does not change the lines for such circumstances, and this for

Charter School Vs. Public Schools
Students Success
Why choose to go to Charter School rather than public school? Charter schools are public school of
choice, meaning families choose for their children. Federal legislation provides grants to help
charters to manage start up costs. They create better educational opportunities for the students
therefore they have higher expectations in teaching. Charter Schools and zoned (public) schools are
tuition free but unfortunately not everyone can get in to Charter school, since it works by lottery.
Everyone has the opportunity to apply and has a choice to attend Charlet School if the students are
lucky enough to get in. Charter schools are more effective for three reasons: they have higher
graduation rates, teachers are more prepared and devoted to their students, and teachers take a
greater responsibility for their students as they compete against Zoned Schools.
How important is it for a student to graduate? Isn t it a waste of time going to school for twelve
years and wasting all the government money and still not receive a diploma? That is why students
need to work harder to earn it and Charter schools are the ones that offer students to become more
educated. Joffee states, Charter schools have higher API scores and graduation rates than traditional
schools: Academically, comparing LAUSD Alliance charter high schools to LAUSD traditional
high schools located in the same neighborhoods, we found the Alliance schools have decisively
higher API scores, 762 vs.

The first song I am introducing on my soundtrack is Issues by Julia Michaels. Throughout Hannah
s life she had many issues she needed to overcome. During all the events Hannah was going

to. Hannah only had one real friend named Kat, but she moved away the summer before the
freshman year of high school. Hannah genuinely thought her best friend for life would be Jessica,
but that quickly changed within a few weeks of school. When Jessica slapped/scratched Hannah, it
was pretty clear that their friendshipwas over, but if they had resolved that issue and continue
being friends, could Hannah still be alive? Hannah needed a friend to talk about Tyler, Justin,

Throughout the song, the lyrics, Should I give up... Or should I just keep chasing pavements?...

the pavements of the streets are a perfect example of life going on and on, but depending on which

Think about the times we are concern about our weight and we wished we had been taught to
exercise and eat well, or times we are down and we wished to learn meditate to better control our
emotions. These are the real world problems that can really hold us back in life, and directly
influence our happiness and I thinks it is about the time to make these skills more accessible to
everyone. The point is, if someone wants to get good at math, then he studies math, or if he wants
to get good at science, he studies science and the same thing applies here. If you want to get good
at relationships, you study relationships, or if you want to get successful, then you need to study
success. School is definitely necessary, but it is not complete. Imagine an education that included
the best of the current system, but at the same time, teaches you how to have healthier relationships,
be better lovers, a better parent, live healthier, and not just live a successful life, but a deeply
meaningful and fulfilled life.
Given these points, the big gap in our educational system today is the gap between what skills
people truly need to learn to live extraordinary lives and the amount of exposure they actually get
to those skills. There is a way to fill this gap. Science has proven that our minds have inevitable
power to shape our lives and our happiness. Whether it is intentionally or unwanted, our thoughts

As Social Beings, The Innate, Evolutionary Instinct Of
As social beings, the innate, evolutionary instinct of human beings is to conform to the greater
societal norms. To be a nonconformist means that one not only turns their back against society, but
they also go against evolution. In other words, to be a nonconformist is to reject the benefits of
having the support of a group, thus rejecting better chances at survival. But what happens when the
greater societal norms are based on inhumane, monstrous ideas of a crazed political leader? What
happens when the greater societal norms ultimately lead to the demolition of an ancient civilization
rooted in rich cultural tradition? What happens when the societal norms do not align with an
individual s mental condition? The complexity of a well... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, when one of the men declined to take part in what would be later known as the
Jozefow Massacre, his captain was not pleased. According to Browning, Captain Hoffmann,
who had arrived in Jozefow directly from Zakrzow with the Third Platoon of Third Company
and had not been apart of the officers meetings in Bilgoraj the day before, was furious that one of
his men had been the first to break ranks. Hoffman began to berate Schimke... (Browning 57).
Browning shows through the account of the men s initiation into mass murder that the stigma of
not participating in massacres meant that the individual would be a coward, less of a man, or
someone who does not support his country made the choice of conformity a tough one. Many of
the men stayed silent when the option was presented. However, Browning shows that the one
man who chose to decline his participation because he would in in no case participate in such an
action, in which defenseless women and children are shot (Browning 56) prompted about a dozen
or so men to follow his lead and also decline to take part in the massacre. Only when one man
acted alone and publicly chose to be a nonconformist, another dozen men were prompted to turn
their back against the group and join him. At the end of World War II, it has been found that these
men would make up less than twenty percent (Browning 168) of the Reserve

How Do The Influences Affect Poe s Life
Edgar Allan Poe was born January 19th, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. His father abandoned
him in 1810 and his mother died of tuberculosis the year after. He was taken in by John and
Frances Allan and grew up in Richmond, Virginia. He attended the University of Virginia for one
semester but dropped out due to lack of money. However, while there he made a name for himself
due to his high performance. He posted his first collection of poems while in the army but later
left the army, after being promoted to sergeant major status, to continue writing full time. He
married in 1835 in Baltimore to Virginia Clemm, his thirteen year old cousin. Ten years later Poe
published his poem The Raven, and it was an instant success. Two years after The Raven... Show

Before Poe died, Poe began to become progressively depressed and started drinking to a greater
extent. Subsequently, this led to the main characters of his poems to also be alcoholics. This is
shown in The Back Cat, where the narrator assaults a cat while he is drunk. This poem shows
how the narrator was overpowered from the alcohol, much like Poe was in some instances.
Alcohol is also shown in another of Poe s poems, The Cask of Amontillado, where the narrator is
kidnapped because his assailant was able to take advantage of him since he was drunk. Henceforth,
Poe s usage of alcohol shaped his writing style, by introducing the subject matter into his

Jean De La Fontaine s Poetry Of Fables
The first ever set of fables are associated with a Thracian slave who lived in the 6th century BC
named Aesop. In fact, his work has taken its place to be some of the most admired in Ancient
Greek History. Similarly, Phaedrus was another Thracian slave after being set free, whilst living in
Rome, he completed 5 books of fables in verse, written in Latin; which some of these were adapted
from the fables attributed to Aesop. The first edition of these were published by the Frenchman
Pierre Pithou in 1596. Due to these two people and numerous others, Jean de la Fontainewas
inspired to write 12 books of fables in Vers libres. La Fontaine was a poet well known, especially,
for his fables. It is worth mentioning that La Fontaine wrote in... Show more content on

In my opinion, this fable suggests a grim but also a realistic view on the world as it implies that
if you cannot help and survive yourself, others cannot help you, like the ant refused to help the
cicada. Besides, this also implies that you shouldn t be lazy or depend on anyone else. For
instance, the cicada relied on the ant for grain in the winter but the result was not as expected,
we should stand on our own feet and be able to provide for ourselves. Furthermore, there is a
well known, generalised theory that life is a paradox and so everything good is harmful which
works for this fable because the cicada enjoyed himself all summer but it was harmful for him
when it got to winter season. However in contrast, if we asked the ant whether he was content with
his work, he would still not be satisfied even though he has everything he needs; he would want to
collect more grain, collect more materials for his shelter. In a like manner, the ant is a character
with concerns for the future whilst on the other hand the cicada is a character who lives in the
moment with no interest in the future. Inconveniently, both characters carry out an excess of one
thing, either working too hard or having fun whereas in reality both of those things need to be
balanced together, this could be another moral that La Fontaine

The Life You Save May Be Your Own Point Of View
Essay #2
The life you save may be your own The story The Life You Save May Be Your Own is written by
an American writer and essayist called Flannery O Connor, who is an important figure for the
American literature. The origin of the author is from the southern part of America and most of the
time she uses the Southern Gothic style. Very often she relies on the grotesque characters, just like
Mr. Shiftlet in this story. The author describes the protagonist as a humorous character, despite his
tries to look as a smart guy, his southern accent and the things he says make no sense; qualities that
turn him into the humorous character he is.
Author s humor is the eye catching point of the story for the readers. The title alone The Life You
Save May Be Your Own indicates the author s purpose of using symbolism and her southern
jocularity. There is a sign in the story with the exact same phrase as the title of the story, which
shows us that if the protagonist can save his own life by saving the life of his just ... Show more

Shiftlet has made many improvements in the house, he even taught the deaf mute young
Lucynell to say the word bird . Her mother suggests that he teaches her the word sugarpie , since
she is in need for a son in law. The old Lucynell says that she will never give daughter to any man,
because she is so innocent and smart too. Therefore, after a week has passed and Mr. Shiftlet has
shown his trustworthiness and that he is there for good deeds, the old lady tries to persuade him
into marrying her daughter. She starts stating that he would never be able to find a more innocent
woman than her and that she is sixteen or seventeen. At first Mr. Shiftlet doesn t accept the offer,
since his goal is the car and he needed money to fix it, but after the Old Lucynell gives him money
to fix the car and paint it, he accepts to marry the young Lucynell. She is in her thirties, but you can

  • 2. New York City Taxicab Medallion Value Analysis This report, entitled New York City Taxicab Medallion Value Analysis, presents key facts and data of New York City medallion transfer transactions from January 2016 to April 2017. The review and analysis in this report are based on information provided by the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission ( TLC ), primary data collected from NYC taxi medallion brokers, and supplemental information gathered from various sources in the for hire vehicle ( FHV ) industry in NYC. Our review was conducted using all transaction data which distinguishes the two types of NYC taxi medallions: independent and corporate (also known as mini fleet). In determining the FMV of both classes of NYC medallions, we analyzed the various methodologies for calculating the estimated value of the medallion and found the approach used in this report, the income approach, to be the most concrete based on factual data to render this type of assessment. As such, the analysis in this report is limited to, and only should be adopted holistically with, the pertinent qualifying parameters. After an extensive review of all applicable datasets and information, we conclude that the taxicab medallion values for the period for January 2016 to April 2017, calculated using the discounted cash flow methodology, were $550,000 and $1,108,000, respectively. The subsequent sections of the report will: (1) provide an overview of the NYC taxi medallion market and new market entrants impact on the taxi industry; (2) identify the best approach to determine medallion valuation (3) analyze data gathered using discounted cash flow to assess valuation of both classes of medallions. I. BACKGROUND OF NYC TAXI MEDALLION In the late 1930s, New York City introduced yellow taxi medallions to curb the oversupply of taxicab vehicles and drivers entry into what was an all cash business, and to limit the impact of traffic congestion, fare cutting wars and other unsafe (and sometimes illegal) activities. • 3. The Money By Junot Diaz Summary Reading The Money by Junot Diaz gave me the impression that Diaz was raised in a strict but disciplined household. There are many parallels between my life and Junot Diaz s life. We both came from low income families struggling for that pesky paycheck. When we did receive that paycheck, most of it ended up going back to our homelands to support the familywe had left behind and or pay off the houses we owned or rented there. We both lived in the rough parts of our neighborhoods where the recently moved in immigrants were victim to robberies and cons. Coincidentally, I experienced a very similar situation that Junot Diaz described in his story. In The Money, Diaz and his family were struggling to attain money. His mother was always getting ... • 4. President Woodrow Wilson s First Modern Ministry For... Political philosopher John Locke observed that people will relinquish power to government with an explicit or implicit trust that the leaders will act for the public good i.e. the good of every particular member of that society (105). However, it is recognized that trust is not given in perpetuity and can be removed over time, especially when the people s rights are violated (Koven 90). As distrust grows towards government and the people speak out, government has proven it will take drastic action to influence public opinion. For example, after he broke his promise to keep America out of war, President Woodrow Wilson created the first modern ministry for propaganda in the West suppressed dissent and resistance. As the 28th President of the United States of America, Woodrow Wilson served two terms from March 1913 to March 1921. He was nominated by his party at the 1912 Democratic Convention where he campaigned on a program called the New Freedom, which stressed individualism and states rights (Freidel). Once elected, Wilson faced the decision of the nation s involvement in the ongoing conflict between rival blocs of Great European Powers: the Austro Hungarian Empire and Germany on one side and France, Russia and Great Britain on the other (Butcher). During his first term, Wilson exclusively expressed neutrality. For instance, on October 27, 1913 in Mobile, AL before the Southern Commercial Congress, Wilson stated, that the United States will never again seek one ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. An Organization s Performance Management Plan Essay Introduction According to Caldwell (2002, pp 8), performance management is defined as a proactive partnership between employees and management that helps employees perform at their best and alight their contributions with the goals, values and initiatives of the organisation . High performing organisations are created through individual accountability for both the achievement of an organisation s results and its cultural foundation. Culture in its simplest terms is how we do things around here . And while culture change needs to be led from the top, it is everyone in the organisation s responsibility. The success balances on all employees being accountable for achieving the organisation s goals, living the organisation s values and demonstrating the right personal behaviour. Factors involved in performance management An organisation s performance management plan must identify the contributions each employee makes in achieving the organisation s goals and objectives. Performance management is a continual process that requires the engagement and participation of all involved. This is the process to create a work environment where employees can perform their duties to the best of their abilities. To be constituted as effective performance management, the following must be evident: Employees must have a clear job description A fair and equitable process and promote open lines of communication between the employee and the employee s manager Build employees ... And the reality must be totally objective and independent. But what actually is an independent, objective reality? Aristotle had never witnessed any pure inertial motion. Of course he wouldn t consider it as the objective reality . From his point of view, his belief that force is needed to maintain a motion definitely corresponds to the reality. Our observations could have inaccuracies or limitations. The so called observed reality also changes when observation techniques improve. • 10. Romeo And Juliet s Decisions Love has the ability to influence actions, and these actions can be good or bad. Love itself is generally not thought of as something harmful, but many times it can impair one s ability to think clearly, and therefore prompt destructive decisions. Love is very powerful, and in Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, it proves to not only lead to happiness, but also tragedy in familial, platonic, and romantic relationships throughout the play. Although we do not see much of the Montague family, the Capulet parents are at the center of the conflict. In the beginning, it is their love for Juliet that makes them arrange her marriage to Paris. Every parent wants the best for their child, and the Capulets are no exception. What they do not realize is that this marriage is not what Juliet wants, and their love and inability to accept their daughter s decision is what ultimately leads Juliet to fix the situation herself. The Nurse, who is more of a mother to Juliet than Lady Capulet, eventually betrays Juliet as well. The Nurse, thinking she is comforting Juliet, advises her to forget about Romeo and marry Paris because he s more attractive and more attainable. Juliet accepts this as the final straw, and she goes to Friar Lawrence for help, which causes her fated death. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A series being, that between the years 1096 and 1291, nine major military expeditions occurred. Christian Muslim interactions between the 1000 1500 centuries were mostly negative then positive. The justification for war included securing and gaining control of the holy lands or territories sacred to both groups (Damascus, The River Jordan, Jerusalem, and numerous others) and to diffuse or universalize their religious ideologies to those living in the eastern hemisphere. Jerusalem was considered the holiest of all sites, because it was significantly important to both religions, in different ways. To Christians, Jerusalem represents; the place of birth, ministry, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth, the Savior or Messiah to Christianity. However, to Muslims, Jerusalem houses the Al Aqsa Mosque (the third holiest site in Islam), in which they believe Muhammad was transported to during the Night Journey (a physical and spiritual journey) from the Sacred Mosque in Mecca. Control of the locks becomes a problem with large user populations and large user turnover. The use of keys can quickly become unmanageable, thus forcing the adoption of electronic access control. The most desirable is Electronic access control which easily manages large user populations, controlling the user lifecycles times, dates, and individual access points. Also, by using an additional sub layer of mechanical/electronic access control protection one can reach a higher level of security, by integrating a key management system to manage the possession and usage of mechanical keys to locks or property within a building or campus. 3. Intrusion detection The third layer is intrusion detection systems or alarms. Intrusion detection monitors for attacks; it is less of a preventative measure and more of a response measure, despite the fact that some would argue it is a deterrent. War is defined by the Webster dictionary as a state of usually open and declared armed hostile conflict between states or nations , this definition does not apply to the current war in Afghanistan. This war has been one of the most controversial wars in United States history, with one of the biggest issues being how Afghanistanis being effected since it is not a part of the war as much as a platform where it is taking place. For all the confusion, destruction, and loss during a war there is a bright side in the unification and advancement of both technology and civil practices. This war has been no different in the fact that technology has advanced exponentially, and the world has begun to truly understand the customs and practices of the Middle Eastern States. The improvement of technology has allowed the building of better agricultural equipment, which has in turn given rise to better agricultural practices. Another thing that has changed both with a change in personnel and a change in policies is the government of Afghanistan. The main driving force for the change being seen is by the young people of Afghanistan who want the culture to evolve in a more global manor. When all of these changes are looked at as a whole instead of individually there is a clear trends that shows the growing economy of Afghanistan increasing at the highest rate in 100 years. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To guard against threats and the risk of assimilation from the Chinese, the Vietnamese had learned from its northern neighbor to build strong centralized feudal governments along with tireless effort to maintain friendly relations with China. The feudal government structure was largely borrowed from China s model in which Confucianism was the main philosophy. A major reason why Confucianism has become deeply rooted in Vietnam s society was that feudal courts found that it was a reasonable philosophy to rule (Duiker 1995). To deal with wars or the threat of war, the need for consolidated and centralized power was prominent. Therefore, there was not much time for discussion or space for exercising democracy throughout Vietnam s history. The paternalistic style has been the dominant mode of government in Vietnam. The role of the feudal government mainly focused on defense and building irrigation systems the backbone of a wet rice economy. All Vietnamese feudal courts treated China respectfully, and most of them sought recognition from Chinese courts. • 24. The Disadvantages Of Artifice Emily Olenik December 1, 2017 Ms. Dolan AP Language The Disavowal of Artifice As a society we are guided by false veneers and deceit. Artifice is unfortunately a prominent tactic used in hope of gaining the respect of the public. Politicians and celebrities who we look up to utilize artifice on a daily basis to gain our recognition and approval. Even teenagers are being taught how to use artifice to their advantage. Chris Hedges believes that the use of artifice is a necessary device to achieve success. In his book, The Empire of Illusion, he discusses the appeal of artifice and how individuals become unreal and ignored if they do not utilize it. His viewpoint is immensely untrue because this strategy causes a never ending cycle of conflict. If we continue to feign our true appearances, we will become unable to fix societal issues we face to today. The celebrities in the media are typically portrayed as people we should look up to and let guide us. They use artifice to make themselves come across and trustworthy and generous, when in reality they are just the opposite. One serious problem has surfaced this year regarding the sexual harassment of actresses in Hollywood. Russia had just overthrown the Tsarist regime, which had been in place for three hundred years and there were multiple groups who wanted to take power for themselves such as Lenin s Bolsheviks, they were fighting in an endless war and losing terribly, peasants where rebelling in the countryside and the people were angered over food shortages. On top of all these problems the Provisional Government was made up of members of the Duma who had no experience actually being in charge or having power over anything let alone the biggest and most culturally diverse country in the world. All these factors played a role in the downfall of the Provisional Government but overall it was the Provisional Government who played the biggest part in their own failure. When started the Provisional Government was an interim government which was to govern Russia until a new constitution was drawn up. But as soon as the Provisional Government was put in charge it faced the immediate problem of legitimacy. It was made up of members of the Duma and was dominated by members of the Octoberist and Kadet parties, who were minorities with only one radical member, Alexander Kerensky. This would give the Provisional Government the problem of not truly representing the people. If it was made up of minorities how can it represent the majority? With appropriate equipment that is well maintained and right for the job, a job should be accomplished quickly and easily. When vehicle parts are not maintained or used properly, problems may happen. Keeping Hoses Working Naturally, a dirty suction line that is allowed to collect material inside it when not regularly and properly cleaned is going to have a problem siphoning anything. This problem is frequently experienced after purchasing used septic trucks as it is impossible to know if a previous owner cleaned the hoses correctly. At best, vacuuming could be inefficient; at its worst, it could stop altogether when the lines get clogged. The answer is to always keep hoses stored clean and empty, although there is a definite trick to doing this. Normally, operators can clear out dirty suction lines by keeping the pump on even when done working in order to clear out any remaining material left in the hose when the pumps were shut down. Instead of accepting the award, Lear decided to boycott the Kennedy Center ceremony in December at the White House to protest Donald Trump presidency. Norman Lear has embodied the role as an agent of change because throughout his life, he has been breaking societal norms and discussing issues in society that people are afraid to talk about. Specifically, in 1971, a groundbreaking American televisionsitcom broke through societal boundaries and transformed the way that the American audience viewed television. Engulfed by the Vietnam War, Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s, fight for women s right, and the Watergate scandal, Norman Lear persevered through stereotypes and entertainment norms with his show All in the Family. This show approached its audience in a very blunt and crude manner; it made conflict the center of its comedy. It dealt with contemporary cultural issues in a relatable way, which allowed blue collar workers to learn about their current everyday issues and concerns. Therefore, from declining his Kennedy Center Award because of his dislike for the President to breaking the taboos of television in the 1970s, Norman Lear has remained a visible changemaker in our society. • 35. Summary Of Fanny Trollope s The Domestic Manners Of The... Fanny Trollope, an English novelist and writer, travelled to America in the early 19th century for a glimpse of life outside of England. In her work, The Domestic Manners of the Americans , Trollope captured her experience in countless opinionated, highly critical observations that judged Americans based on their behaviors and practices. Many aspects of Americanlife captured Trollope s attention, but these aspects were not seen in a positive light. It was obvious through her story that Trollope did not care for the American life; however, there seemed to be much more to Trollope s opinions besides petty distastes. Trollope found the American lifestyle repulsive because it seemed to revolve around pride in their impolite and offensive behavior, creating an environment of arrogance and superiority over outsiders like herself. In the beginning of her stay in America, Trollope was enjoying a cup of tea in her hotel when she was abruptly confronted by the hotel s landlord. He knocked on her door and demanded that Trollope leave, saying I cannot accommodate you on these terms; we have no family tea drinkings here, and you must live either with me or my wife, or not at all in my house (Trollope 34). When Trollope tried to explain that she was a foreigner and unaware of American customs, the landlord added Our mannersare very good manners, and we don t wish any changes from England (Trollope 34). The landlord s actions were uncalled for in Trollope s opinion; his authority and pride seemed almost comical. He was so adamant about control over the room, yet the room itself was certainly not anything noteworthy. The room was described by Trollope as being subpar, as it had no carpet, and was darkened by blinds of paper (Trollope 33). The landlord took great pride in American manners and seemed to think that any English practices were inferior. Ironically, in other parts of her work, Trollope reported her experience in America to be one filled with awful mannered people. She was disgusted with their poor manners, like the incessant, remorseless spitting of Americans (Trollope 11). • 37. Feudalism In The Canterbury Tales Geoffrey Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales was written during a time of societal change, away from the stability of feudalism and towards an individualistic, mercantile economy. Feudalism consisted of a static, rural economy where every member had a duty to serve those above them. They valued the greater good and were not focused on gaining economically for their own personal benefit. An era of change, however, began as events such as the Crusades opened up trading opportunities which would eventually cause a shift in England, as the economy went from being land based to money based. A mercantile class was on the rise as well as capitalism. People were no longer driven to work by a sense of personal duty for the common good, but rather for their own social and economic gain. Corruption of the Church during this time as well increased, as church members were affected negatively by this changing economy. Many were driven by greed as well and took on immoral approaches towards their church positions. Vows and church teachings were disregarded as indulgences and materialism became the main focus of many in the clergy. Through his satirical portrayal of his characters in CanterburyTales, Chaucer explores issues such as the changing economy and corruption of the church in order to expose and criticize the wrongdoings and values of his shifting society caused by the end of feudalism during this time. It explores the corrupted desires of society, while counterbalancing between its subconscious and social world. The film disrupts all nostalgic knowledge we have of American suburbia by juxtaposing the fluidic norms of genderand socioeconomic roles. As well as evoke neurotic notions of masculinity. However the construction of women being used as agents to the physical and social desires of men, create an empirical judgment on the perpetuance of male dominance and their ability to comply with societal rules. When examined from this logic, the men in Blue Velvet are constantly seen and shown as aggressors, and perpetrators of women s demise. The film begins by vividly painting American suburbia through the depiction of their socioeconomic archetypes. Within the opening credits, the audience is welcomed by the neighborhood fireman waving to his surrounding neighbors, the blocks crossing guard safely crossing the children across the street, the morning s blue sky looking down onto a white picked fence and blooming red tulips reaching up high. The film vividly paints life in suburbia. Then suddenly we see a manbeing struck by natural causes, and a woman who is glued to her television unaware of her surrounding world. Comparing Macbeth And Goold s Play Macbeth, a play written by Shakespeare in 1606 is a tragedy surrounding a man Macbeth as he unknowingly seals his own fate due to his own excessive ambition and greed. This tragedy has since been taken to the big screen by many, one of which is director Rupert Goold. In 2010 Goold released a television film version of play on the BBC. Despite the differences between the two, the movie does effectively convey the overall message of the original story. In Goold s version, we see pivotal moments such as the breaking of Macbeth and Lady Macbeths bond. This moment is stressed just as much in the film as it is in the play because not only does it show the breaking of such a strong bond, but it also leads into another important moment in which Lady Macbeth is starting to get sort of delirious. The film also keeps up with the play and how it makes sure to highlight certain symbols and motifs such as blood and darkness through setting and lighting choice, special effects, staying true to the lines, etc. the director even goes as far as to reinforce death through a different motif (dead children). Charter schools are public school of choice, meaning families choose for their children. Federal legislation provides grants to help charters to manage start up costs. They create better educational opportunities for the students therefore they have higher expectations in teaching. Charter Schools and zoned (public) schools are tuition free but unfortunately not everyone can get in to Charter school, since it works by lottery. Everyone has the opportunity to apply and has a choice to attend Charlet School if the students are lucky enough to get in. Charter schools are more effective for three reasons: they have higher graduation rates, teachers are more prepared and devoted to their students, and teachers take a greater responsibility for their students as they compete against Zoned Schools. How important is it for a student to graduate? Isn t it a waste of time going to school for twelve years and wasting all the government money and still not receive a diploma? That is why students need to work harder to earn it and Charter schools are the ones that offer students to become more educated. Only when one man acted alone and publicly chose to be a nonconformist, another dozen men were prompted to turn their back against the group and join him. At the end of World War II, it has been found that these men would make up less than twenty percent (Browning 168) of the Reserve ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

His father abandoned him in 1810 and his mother died of tuberculosis the year after. He was taken in by John and Frances Allan and grew up in Richmond, Virginia. He married in 1835 in Baltimore to Virginia Clemm, his thirteen year old cousin. Ten years later Poe published his poem The Raven, and it was an instant success. Two years after The Raven... Subsequently, this led to the main characters of his poems to also be alcoholics. This is shown in The Back Cat, where the narrator assaults a cat while he is drunk. This poem shows how the narrator was overpowered from the alcohol, much like Poe was in some instances. Alcohol is also shown in another of Poe s poems, The Cask of Amontillado, where the narrator is kidnapped because his assailant was able to take advantage of him since he was drunk. Henceforth, Poe s usage of alcohol shaped his writing style, by introducing the subject matter into his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 49. Jean De La Fontaine s Poetry Of Fables The first ever set of fables are associated with a Thracian slave who lived in the 6th century BC named Aesop. In fact, his work has taken its place to be some of the most admired in Ancient Greek History. Similarly, Phaedrus was another Thracian slave after being set free, whilst living in Rome, he completed 5 books of fables in verse, written in Latin; which some of these were adapted from the fables attributed to Aesop. The first edition of these were published by the Frenchman Pierre Pithou in 1596. Due to these two people and numerous others, Jean de la Fontainewas inspired to write 12 books of fables in Vers libres. La Fontaine was a poet well known, especially, for his fables. It is worth mentioning that La Fontaine wrote in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In my opinion, this fable suggests a grim but also a realistic view on the world as it implies that if you cannot help and survive yourself, others cannot help you, like the ant refused to help the cicada. Besides, this also implies that you shouldn t be lazy or depend on anyone else. For instance, the cicada relied on the ant for grain in the winter but the result was not as expected, we should stand on our own feet and be able to provide for ourselves. Furthermore, there is a well known, generalised theory that life is a paradox and so everything good is harmful which works for this fable because the cicada enjoyed himself all summer but it was harmful for him when it got to winter season. However in contrast, if we asked the ant whether he was content with his work, he would still not be satisfied even though he has everything he needs; he would want to collect more grain, collect more materials for his shelter. In a like manner, the ant is a character with concerns for the future whilst on the other hand the cicada is a character who lives in the moment with no interest in the future. Inconveniently, both characters carry out an excess of one thing, either working too hard or having fun whereas in reality both of those things need to be balanced together, this could be another moral that La Fontaine ... The Life You Save May Be Your Own Point Of View Essay #2 The life you save may be your own The story The Life You Save May Be Your Own is written by an American writer and essayist called Flannery O Connor, who is an important figure for the American literature. The origin of the author is from the southern part of America and most of the time she uses the Southern Gothic style. Very often she relies on the grotesque characters, just like Mr. Shiftlet in this story. The author describes the protagonist as a humorous character, despite his tries to look as a smart guy, his southern accent and the things he says make no sense; qualities that turn him into the humorous character he is. Author s humor is the eye catching point of the story for the readers. The title alone The Life You Save May Be Your Own indicates the author s purpose of using symbolism and her southern jocularity. There is a sign in the story with the exact same phrase as the title of the story, which shows us that if the protagonist can save his own life by saving the life of his just ...
