Gangs Of New York Sociology
The movie begins in New York, in 1843, with a gang fight. Bill the butcher Cutting s gang of
nativists have challenged the dead rabbits (a gang of mostly Irish immigrants) to a fight to settle
once and for all who is the most powerful gang in the area. After an intense battle the nativists win
by killing the leader of the dead rabbits, also Amsterdam s (the main characters) father.
Amsterdam is then led into an orphanage where he grows to be a man, all while Bill Cutting runs
the Five Points, and most of New York. The Five Points is a district of New York City and
obviously the most corrupt. Crime is all to common, and sickness runs rampant in the area. ... Show

The movie has so many scenes (it s two hours and forty five minutes long) it s hard to pick a
favorite. If I had to it would be the ending scene though, where the Draft Riots are in full force
and finally Amsterdam and Jenny visit the graves of Bill Cutting and Amsterdam s father,
followed by a time laps scene of the graveyard and the New York City skyline. The ending scene is
important because it puts the whole movie into perspective. You get so caught up in the fighting,
and crime that you forget the big picture. With the Union Army s actions it shows how weak and
ridiculous the gangs in New York were. Simply, gangs were (and to some extent still are) nothing
but a certain demographic joining in large numbers only to force their ideas on the majority. The
scene also touches on the fact that presently no one remembers or cares about the gangs or the riots,
furthering the idea of the pointlessness of it.
Historically speaking, the movie relates the United States history poorly. It has many accuracies
historically, but the problems far outweigh them.
First though, the accuracies. The movie depicts the Five Points in New York as being poor,
pestilent, and ugly. This is true to history. The district was doomed to slumhood from the beginning.
It was erected on the filled in Collect Pond, which

Why Did Macduff Destroy Macbeth
In Macbeth, Act 4: 2, we can see that Macbeth has reached a point in his life where he will do
anything and kill anyone to ensure his stature in the kingdom is protected. We analyzed this when
he first murdered King Duncan and then had Banquo, his best friend, assassinated. With his
constant homicides come sleepless nights and hallucinations of ghosts. Eventually, his wife goes
crazy because of her guilty conscience of provoking her husband into committing the murders, and
dies right before the battle between Macbethand Macduff occurs. One chief motive behind
Macduff s purpose to destroy Macbeth is what act 4: 2 is about. Macbeth has Macduff s family,
and all who were in his home, slaughtered. This engages Malcolm, who was suspected of his...

So the number of liars outnumbers the amount of trustworthy citizens. Therefore, the term, fair
is foul, and foul is fair, means that people who are nice and trustworthy should, and are, killed,
like Banquo and the family and people or Macduff s home. In return, People who are foul
villains, are now trusted? Comparing to the real world of today, there are those who make
promises and break them, but they are not so severe that they need to be hanged for doing so.
However, those who break their promises very often are perceived as untrustworthy and individuals
learn not to converse or make agreements with them. So, deciding whether someone is a good
individual or not, judging by their honesty, is determined in the eye of the

Marxist Analysis On Class Conflict In Lord Of The Flies
A Marxist Analysis on Class Conflict in Lord of the Flies
The Ideology of Golding refers to the Cold War conflict between the Open minded Democracy in
his presentation of Ralph whereas Jack is the authoritarian communism. Based on Dobie, Ann
Brewster s Wadsworth Cengage Learning, 2008 we know that Marxists do not see any literary
works as an appealing article but as products of the socioeconomic aspects. Similarly Lord of the
Flies authenticates a Marxist principle explained by the Class Conflict in the boys attempts of
civilization and decentralization. Regardless of the boys imitation of the social group that they
think would reflect the adult world believably it turned into barbarity and bloodstained violence.
Marxism is as always quoted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even if he is described as awkward, chubby and averse to physical activities due to his asthma,
Piggy is the most meticulous, sensitive and the intellectualist of the island. It is his intellectual
talent which makes him appealing to Ralph, eventually Ralph comes to admire and respect Piggy
and makes him the Brain Trust of group. Piggy is devoted to the ideal of civilization and
consistently warning the other boys for behaving as barbarians.
On the contrary, is the personality of Jack, He demonstrates Militarism as it borders on
Totalitarianism. He is cruel and preoccupied with hunting and slaying pigs. His sadism builds up
during the course of the novel, and he eventually turns cruelly on the other boys; He fakes an
interest in the rules established on the island by Ralph, but only if they allow him to impose
punishment. He best represents mobocracy which is proved later by the rejection of Ralph s
enforced order. The results of this act indicate the dangers inherent in an anarchistic system based

A Survivor s Story Angela Goodwin-Slater
An annotated bibliography is a list of available references to books, articles, and documents.
Each reference is followed by a brief description of the content, quality, and relevance of the source

An annotated bibliography is similar to a bibliography with one significant difference: an annotated
bibliography has an evaluative paragraph after each reference.

Comparison Of Maya Aztec, And Inca Civilizations
After reading about Maya,Aztec, and Inca civilizations;I found that they were important to our
past and present life. And in some ways have developed our culture and how we view things.
From creating accurate calendars to making complex heiroglyphic. One of the first empires was
the Maya and is their empire it was divided by class and profession; With the king at the
top, beneath him nobles, then priests and commoners, and at the lowest level were slaves. In their
empire they created a type of heiroglyphics used to record historical and religious events.Like any
area they also traded goods. However while it was a successful empire many left due to famine

How Does Terry Malloy Change In On The Waterfront
On the Waterfront is set on the docks, a very dismal place. The black and white photography
make the streets, alleyways and small, cramped apartments seem dark and bleak. While the
union bosses live well, the workers seem trapped by their situation, with no way to get out. Terry
Malloy is a low level worker for the union boss, who is not really aware that he is a part of the
corruption. He is asked to lure Joey Doyle to the roof of his apartment building, and believes that
the union men just want to lean on him a little bit (On the Waterfront) about testifying before the
waterfront crime commission. When he learns that he actually lured Joey to his death, he is upset

However, for most of the characters, choosing to do what is right can be difficult. Opposing the
union bosses can be dangerous, as evidenced by the deaths of Andy, Joey and Kayo. Therefore,
many of the dock workers prefer to do nothing and remain alive. Other characters, such as Father
Barry and Edie, have a strong internal moral code, and personal considerations do not impact
their decision to do what is right. However, in the case of Terry, his background and current
affiliations present a number of obstacles which prevent him from freely listening to what his
conscience is telling him to do. Terry is owned by Johnny Friendly, and cannot protest against
the jobs that are given to him. This ownership goes back to the days when Terry was a prize
fighter, and was made to take a fall when Friendly bet against him. Charley, Terry s older brother,
is a key member of Friendly s group, and was the one who told Terry he had to take the fall.
When Friendly learns that Terry has been subpoenaed to appear before the crime commission, he
sends Charley to persuade Terry to stop seeing Edie, and take a high paying job with the union.
Terry refuses and Charley pays the price with his life. When Terry goes looking for Friendly to get
revenge, Father Barry tells him: don t fight him like a

The Case For Decentralized Generation Of Electricity
In the article The Case for Decentralized Generation of Electricity , energy policy analyst Thomas
R. Casten and project engineer Brennan Downes frame the consequences of meeting up with the
demands of power energy with central generation or letting go of decentralized generation that
recycles waste energy. They go on to summarize how a new power generation has been built
over the past 30 years under given circumstances of technology that was available at the time, the
cost of technology and fuel prices, and conclusion of their ideas. From 1910 to 1960, electricity
was originally produced by either using hydroelectric dams or burning fossil fuels in order to
deliver power to cities and buildings. But those methods proved to be... Show more content on

Having these turbines and machines located directly within large populations rather than many
miles away was an advantage. Although, they found that using multiple engines and turbines was
more cost effective and less harmful in transmission, electric industries weren t being fair because
they began to charge consumers at very high rates. To regulate the situation in 1978, Congress
stepped in and wanted to create competition within the industry in the year. Independent power
companies began to advance and develop on site generation in areas made able to regulate the
monopoly. Today, most power companies think that centralized electrical energy gives the most
favorable results for all. To support this belief, the International Energy Agency predicted a
significant increase in numbers for the next thirty years as our world s need for electrical power
continues to grow every second. According to Figure 1 in the article, the electricity generation
capacity for the world will increase by almost 4,500 GW to reach 8,000 GW total. With the
demand for burning fossil fuels to increase by 90% and great amount of carbon dioxide emission,
we will negatively affect our environments with this huge contribution to global warming. To meet
our increasing reliance and demand for this resource, central generation of electricity will also
critically affect the tax market, fossil fuel market, and our world s environment as a whole.

This is because companies need to understand what their costs are, like construction companies,
to be able to bid on jobs. These types of companies understand what it takes to complete most
aspects of the jobs they are bidding on. When they provide a prospective customer with a job
cost sheet it breaks down material costs, labor costs, and overhead costs to show their customer
where the costs are going to be incurred. These types of companies know how many hours it will
take to assemble parts, construct parts of a house, repair pipes, and many other types of work of
this nature. These companies spend time analyzing their costs per job to compute a standard for
each category of their jobs and identify cost drivers to come to a standard cost.
(b) A standard imposed by a governmental agency is known as a regulation. Do you agree? Explain.
Yes a standard imposed by a governmental agency is a regulation. When governmental agencies
impose standards that are required for a specific attribute of any job it is called a regulation. This
can be anything from local government limiting the number of deer being able to be hunted by one
person, the Environmental Protection Agency stating that a company can only produce X amount
of pollution per year, to the federal government stating that each individual must have the same

Zoos Literature Review
Are the enclosures in zoos safe and beneficial for the animals? Both authors have different opinions
when it comes to zoo enclosure, but Benbow focuses on how the enclosures have improved over
the years, where Fraser focuses on how the improved enclosures are still not quite safe enough for
the animals. This helped me to understand that although the enclosures have improved, they still
need some work.
In an article by S.M.P. Benbow called Zoos: Public Places to View Private Lives, she discusses how
zoo enclosures have improved over time. She goes into detail about how the enclosures started as
something that was supposed to be exactly like there habitat, and as time goes on it has gotten more
real. Benbow also discusses the different technological advances in the enclosures, and how they
are a space that represents a different place (Benbow, 2000, p 13 23). S.M.P. Benbow worked in the
Department Environment and Geography at the University of Manitoba, and is now the Associate
Dean at the Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources. This particular
article was part of her Peer Reviewed works. The motivation behind this work and many others
is her love of the environment. This article is a peer reviewed article, so the structure and
language is professional and scholarly. This article puts a lot of emphasis on zoos being
developed to be like their natural habitats. The majority of the article gives detail on the
development of zoos over the years. The author takes time to explain everything, and backs up all
evidence with quotes and information from other sources. Benbow seems incredibly
knowledgeable on Zoos and the environment. She also leaves out her opinion most of the time and
give mostly facts, but she seems to think the advancements made have helped improve enclosures.
This author makes the idea of zoos seem less bad by explaining how the enclosures have improved
tremendously (Benbow, 2000, p 13 23).
In an article written by Stephen Fraser called Safe Havens, he discusses how enclosures are still
not safe enough. Fraser starts off with a story of a tiger who jumped over and attacked three men.
They found out that the reason the tiger attacked was because the men were taunting the

Analyse The Effects Of Machismo
Hello Professor Classmates;
The exposure to ideas from other ways of living can broaden my perspective and open my
imagination to different philosophies of life. However, I find the (Gannon Pillai, 2015) Effects of
Machismo (p 326) to be something that would be difficult to identify with if I were a part of that
culture. I guess it is the aggressiveness in me and having a competitive nature. I ve always seen
myself as a strong woman, so to be looked upon as a sexual object to my husband and too
overlooked his infidelities because he chooses to be a conqueror would cause a magnitude of
conflict that would end in divorce. Having to abstain from having a career to be a homemaker and
my only means of having a social life would be to gather

Hanfu s Role In Modern Society
As I mentioned before in the previous posts, comparing to the Japanese Kimono and Korea
Hanbok, Chinese Hanfu has a much longer history. However, in the contemporary society, Hanfu
is the one which has been ignored mostly. Except a small group of people who studied it, almost
no one wear it in daily life or even important ceremonies or holidays. More than 81% of Chinese
citizens even do not know about what it is.
Of course, this pathetic result came with a reason. Ever since 1644, the whole China was
transformed to Qing dynasty, which was ruled by Manchu, another nationality in China. However, I
have already introduced before that Hanfu is the traditional clothing for the Han nationality. The

How Samuel Adams Set a Brush Fire in the Minds of the People
It does not require a majority to prevail, but rather an irate, tireless minority keen to set brush
fires in people s minds. This is a quote from Samuel Adams. He truly lived his life according to
this statement. Adams spent his life as part of the irate, tireless minority, and as he would put it,
he set many brush fires in people s minds. As the leader of the Sons of Liberty, a patriotic rebel
group, he convinced many people to stand against British rule. He knew that he did not need as
many people as the British; he just needed a group of bold and risky people to stand firm in their
beliefs. Born on September 27, 1722 to Samuel and Mary Adams in Boston, Massachusetts,
Samuel Adams had a promising future. His family was wealthy and respected church members.
As a teenager, he attended Boston Latin School and Harvard. At one point, his family lost much
of their money and Adams had to work as a waiter. This helped him better understand the less
wealthy people in Boston. He knew how high taxes could affect the income of an average
family. This could have inspired him to become a patriotic leader, instead of the church leader
that his father wanted him to be. Even though Adams was not a deacon or minister, he still held
on to his Puritan beliefs he was raised with. Adams tried to be a businessman in his early life, but
quickly found that business was not his talent. In 1765, he was elected to the Massachusetts
Assembly, where he served as a clerk for seven

Social construction theorists suggest that identity differences are categories constructed by social
rather than biological processes. Importantly, social categories are bounded by and are often
dichotomised in both the private and public psyche. Markus et al further argue that Australia s
current social and political responses to difference are situated within the broader context of
colonial invasion, Indigenous oppression and the White Australia Policy. In the political power play
and linguistic treatment of the emblematically powerless reveals not only core party values, but
varying conceptions of Australian identity. This is especially recognisable when political debate is
considered in the context of three distinct time periods and political situations, demonstrating a
transient grasp of elusive Australianness in a society defined not by what is desirable, but what is
not, thereby degrading ideals of multi cultural egalitarianism. Put simply, Australia s postcolonial
desire to control its borders and regulate the Hegelian Other underpins the politicisation of the boat
people phenomenon. This relates closely to Chomsky s assertion that intentionally inducing fear of
a terrifying enemy is a standard device used to whip the domestic population of any country into
line behind contentious

The Solar Of Solar Power Essay
Solar Power Innovations Solar Power has been observed as early as the year of 1839 by a
French physicist named Alexandre Edmond Becquerel. He invented the first photovoltaic cell.
Since then his studies and works have been perfected on and continue to change the world in
which we live for the better. Photovoltaic cells have constantly been evolving ever since. In 1883,
Charles Fritts built the first solid state photovoltaic cell using materials such as gold and
selenium. With further advances to the system, scientist were able to recreate the cell in a way
that could serve as an alternative power source on the satellite named Vanguard that was flown
into space in the year of 1958. In the 1970 s there was an oil crisis when Middle Eastern countries
proclaimed a trading ban, encouraging oil companies to buy solar firms. Funded research allowed
for first, second and third generation cells to be constructed. Currently, the cost of solar energyhas
exponentially decreased with the falling price of silicon, allowing for many new innovations to
take place. Thin solar film is a second generation cell that is being commercially used. The
creation of solar thin film allowed us to reduce cost even further as it is printed in rolls which can
be incorporated into things like building materials instead of having to have big bulky expensive
panels. The film is lightweight, flexible and most importantly, affordable. Over the past few years,
the thin solar film has become more efficient

City Thrift Business Analysis
Social commerce is similar to e commerce, a way to buy and sale services and products on the
internet (Tuten Solomon, 2015). But social commerce goes a little farther with how it moves
through cyber world. It uses tools such as user s rates, referrals or social advertising. A small
business here in Jackson, Tn., I am familiar with is City Thrift, a consignment store that has a lot
of odds and ends, a little hidden treasure. There are several consignment stores around town which
makes the reason I have chosen this market. City Thrift can stand out if it enhances its social
commerce. It offers I feel to some others of its kind better selection of stuff should I say. You can

The Existence Of Evil By Blackburn Theory
Introduction: 53 In Blackburn theory I am going to argue that his theory the existence of evil
strongly suggests that there does not exist a God who is all good, all knowing and all powerful to
be false. In my argument I will try to present facts that show the existence of God and why there is
evil.
Exposition: 313 In Blackburn s argument he basically mentions that because there is evil in the
world there is no existence of a present creator. It is impossible to see the suffering that s going
on in the world and suggest that it s a part of a good plan. Why would a creator of all good be
able to stand by and watch individuals suffer, and of all knowing and powerful why not put an
end to all suffering at once. Logically a creator of all good and all powerful would be able to put a
stop to suffering and evil immediately. Blackburn also mentions that religious individuals state that
because of free will the world is what it is today. The notion that Godcreated a perfect world with
humans having free will and because of the misuse of that free will evil is present. Blackburn is
against this idea total, he mentioned we couldn t have free will without the influence of the past
we can be free to do whatever we want and potentially to be blame for it, but the will is the
influence of the past so we basically doing what the past tell us which is determinism. Blackburn
also states that it s not only human decisions that inflict evil

Analyzing The Mood Of Edgar Allan Poe s The Raven
The mood that is created Edgar Allan Poe in his poem The Raven is somewhat sad and ominous.
The author creates this mood by relaying the tale through the eyes of a man in mourning and
through the appearance of a black Raven who consistency answers nevermore Even the
atmosphere inside and outside of the home where the man is living appears dark and dreary
which adds to the mood being set by the author. The poem is introduced with a man mourning
over his recently dead wife, Lenore. He is in his home grieving. The man appears to be in a

The man himself is not quite sure what to think. As he questions the Raven, the only response he
gets is nevermore . This adds to the mystery and darkness of the mood. The reader wonders
whether the Raven is there to help or harm the man in his grief. It isn t very clear. What we do
know is that the Raven s presence doesn t seem to be helpful. The description of the room where
the man is reading also contributes to the mood, it is very late at night, he is alone and grieving.
The room is decorated in dark colors which seems to add to the darkness of the mood in which
the man is found also contributes to the mood being set by the author. Whether it s the
description of the curtains, or just the impression left by the author, the reader recognizes the
mood in the house is dark. The description of the surroundings of the home where the man lives
is also dark. It is a December night and pitch black outside, it obviously must be windy and cold
because the man originally thinks the wind may have caused the tapping but then realizes it must
be a late night visitor. However, upon opening the door, there is darkness there and nothing more .
So whether it d be the mood of the man himself, the Raven s impact on the mood or the setting
inside or outside the house, there is no doubt that the author has created a very dark and ominous

Examples Of Flashbacks In Toni Morrison s Beloved
Beloved: How the Past Affects a Person
Beloved is full of intense scenes that leave readers on the edge of their seats wondering what will
happen next. Some of the most powerful scenes are flashbacks, past experiences that characters
come face to face with. What makes these flashbacks so important is that they help make the reader
understand why the characters interact with each other the way they do. In Beloved, Toni Morrison
uses a loose structure and weaves flashbacks into everyday life to create a connection through
which readers can better understand the character s past.
In the beginning of the novel, the reader is introduced to the idea of flashbacks, which remain short
and are intertwined seamlessly within the text. The readers learn to be active when reading, and
also pay close attention to the details within the flashbacks to learn more about the characters that
their past lives.
The most significant flashbacks in Part One are when the reader learns about Sethe s past, and
how she killed her crawling already? baby. Inside, two boys bled in the sawdust at the feet of a
nigger woman holding a blood soaked child to her chest with one hand and an infant by the heels
in the other (Morrison 175). Here is where the reader first learns how the crawling already baby
dies: Sethe killed her and attempted to kill the rest of the children. When Sethe saw the
schoolteacher, she ran to the shed to try to save her children from slavery. She tried to make the

Robert Scholes on Video Texts
According to Robert Scholes, author of On Reading a Video Text, commercials aired on
television hold a dynamic power over human beings on a subconscious level. He believes that
through the use of specific tools, commercials can hold the minds of an audience captive, and can
control their abilities to think rationally. Visual fascination, one of the tools Scholes believes
captures the minds of viewers, can take a simple video, and through the use of editing and special
effects, turn it into a powerful scene which one simply cannot take his or her eyes from. Narrativity
is yet another way Scholes feels commercials can take control of the thoughts of a person sitting in

We are simply awestruck by seeing something we cannot on our own.
The Budweiser commercial in question uses narrativity throughout itself to not only tell the story of
the umpire, but to tell the story of America, to tell the story of our national pastime, to tell the story
of the young black man who has worked ever so hard to make it, when he finally does. While
watching the young umpire working a game, we hear the narrator s voice, In the minors you got
to make all the calls, and then one day you get the call (Scholes, p. 620), Budweiser uses this
catchy phrase in order to grab our attention, to focus us on the commercial in order to look for
the blossoming story. This slight play on words has a great effect on a viewer due to the fact that
our minds think about the statement, and by the time we realize what is actually happening, the
commercial has shown us that the black umpire has just gotten his call. Later in the commercial,
after the game has obviously ended, we see the umpire sitting in the same bar as the manager who
confronted him about his bad call during the game. The old white manager with the history of

the British Empire s presence in the Soudan during the reclamation of the country by the Egyptian
Government with England s assistance. It was published in 1899 by Longmans, Green and

Information in this digital age is very important and an imperative for the conduct of business and

2.INTRODUCTION2.1 Meaning of Databases and compilations
Databases in copyright are principally kinds of compilation, and compilations are seen as things
that are being protected . So in defining compilation, we can say that A compilation is defined in
the В§ 101 definitions section as: A work formed by the collection and assembling of pre existing
materials or of data that are selected, coordinated, or arranged in such a way that the resulting work
as a whole constitutes an original work of authorship.
This evidences that the protection of copyright in a compilation emphasizes and concentrates on
the original ways that the data or materials that pre existed are arranged, organized, coordinated
and selected, not the data. In s. 102 the subject clearly shows and comprises of compilations and
derivative works, but only

Imogene King Essay
a) How would you answer the questions below that were posed by King based on what you know
about current nursing practice?
Imogene King s theory of goal attainment focused on the cooperation between nurses and patients
(Masters, 2015). Both parties would share information, set a common goal, and work to achieve the
set objectives. King was convinced that nurses had to help people to maintain fundamental aspects
of their health and hence ensure wellness (Masters, 2015). The questions posed by King would be
answered by considering the points of synergy between the current practice and perceived health
outcomes. In this manner, the focus of the nursing will be on the patient.
b) What is the scope of practice of nurse practitioners, nurse educators and nurse leaders, and in
what kind of settings do these nursing professionals perform their functions?
The scope of practice for medical practitioners includes all systems levels of care (Masters, 2015).
Hence, nursing professionals participate in both direct and indirect care. Besides, nursing ... Show

effectiveness of health care programs. Furthermore, current nursing goals intend to promote

Excerpts From Being And Time By Martin Dasein Analysis
An Outline Summary: Excerpts from Being and Time (1927) (Dasein s Possibility of Being a
Whole, and Being towards Death) Martin Heidegger
Martin Heidegger started his argument by saying that once the Dasein reaches its death, it then
loses its state of being there and is now transitioning to a no longer dasein state and will take it as
an experience. However, death of the Other, as he said, is rather impressive and the termination of
Dasein, in turn, will be Objectively accessible therefore making bounds of the Dasein s totality.
Even with the Other s death, in its no longer Dasein state and Being no longer in the world, it is
still considered as a Being just in the Being just present at hand and no more of a bodily thing
that we will encounter. The coming of an end of an entity qua Dasein is the coming forth of
beginning of the same entity qua something present at hand. The changing over of Dasein to that
of the Being just present at hand and no more doesn t necessarily imply that we are not presented
with such mere corporeal Thing. Even if reaching the peak of death, a dead corpse can be of use
to someone who is seeking for the meaning or idea of life. This such being is not to be confused
as a lifeless material for it may have lost its life but it still always something more than that. He
then defined deceased as that which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

analysis of Dasein s totality however, that is wrong. If one is under that mindset that one s Dasein

The Dred Scott Case Against Slavery
In the 1780s, there was a question of whether slavery would be tolerable in new territories to
threaten the Union. Throughout the decades, many compromises were made to avoid disunion.
But the Constitution was not clear on this subject which created quite the discussion nationwide
when raised in 1857 before the Supreme Court in the form of the Dred Scott case. The Dred
Scott decision was an eye opener to Northerners that believed slavery was acceptable as long as
it stayed in the South. If the decision took away any power Congress once had to regulate
slavery in new territories, slavery could quickly expand into much of the western United States.
Realizing that once slavery expanded into those territories, it could quickly spread into the once
free states. Many Northerners remained silent on the issue, this very possibility was too scary to
ignore. Northerners who had not previously been against the South and against slavery began to
realize that if they did not stop slavery now, they might never again have the chance. The
growing fear in the North helped further contributed to an ongoing dispute between the two sides
which eventually lead to the Civil War. A couple years after Chief Justice Taney read Scott v.
Sandford decision, half of the Union had seceded and the nation was engaged in civil war.
However, because of the passions it created on both sides, Taney s decision certainly quickly
accelerated the start of conflict. Even in 1865, as the long and bloody

Western Influence on Japanese Business Management Essay
Japanese management: how the western influence and the 1990s crises have modified
management practices in Japan, and in Japanese companies broadly speaking? Introduction
Japan has been the second largest power in the world for several decades, now. As a quite
remote island in Asia, its history and development shaped a country with its own way of
thinking and behaving, and as far as we are concerned, with a great economy and a technological
lead over its Asian neighbours. After the Second World War (WWII), Japan started from scratch,
and its business succeeded very well, first on the domestic market and then on a world scale. In
the 1970s, Westerners were looking at Japan in awe, and tried to know how it could be such a good

Based on their original religion (Shinto), the cult of the ancestors is widespread and, in Japan,
people are much more respectful of their parents than in Western countries. In the same way,
decision making and socialisation processes are seen very differently, for Japanese will tend to
take much time and involve many people to evolve a plan, but then will implement it directly
and by themselves, with more pleasure than Westerners who are deemed to make quick and
undemocratic decisions, but execute them slowly and indirectly. As a result, Japanese would be
more willing to work and more productive because of their understanding of what a strategy
means: politeness, team work, friendship and harmony are key features of the Japanese culture.
This can be seen in the sense of community which strikes every foreigner: the individual is under
represented whereas the group as a whole is always put on the foreground, hence the famous
obedience and respect of Japanese people. Outcomes of WWII At the end of the Meiji era (19th
and beginning of the 20th centuries), Japan had already experienced an opening and some
misunderstandings with foreign countries (e.g. Perry?s crew). The first half of the 20th century
brought its lot of mishaps, too, and this fostered the spread of hatred and racial doctrines: hakko

We need to reaffirm our position as a company delivering high quality products. One of our
competitors suffered from product recall due to possibility of delivering incorrect dosage. The rest
our competing products captured only about 7% of market share due to reluctance of customer

Michael Porter’s Generic Strategies
Michael Porter s Generic Strategies According to Porter, strategies allow organizations to gain
competitive advantage from three different bases: cost leadership, differentiation and focus. Porter
calls these bases as generic strategies. Cost leadership emphasizes producing standardized products
at a very low per unit cost for consumers who are price sensitive. Differentiation is a strategy aimed
at producing products and services considered unique industry wide and directed at customers who
are relatively price insensitive. Focus means producing products and services that fulfill the needs
of small groups of customers (niche market). When we consider competitiveness, the following
questions are raised: 1.Should we compete on the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some companies which have successfully followed this strategy are: Wal Mart, Southwest Airlines,
Timex, Black Decker, Mc Donald s etc. A successful cost leadership strategy usually provides the
entire firm with high efficiency, low overhead, limited perks, intolerance of waste, intensive
screening of budget requests, and wide span of control efforts. However, some risks of pursuing this
strategy are that competitors might imitate the strategy, thus, driving overall industry profits down;
that technology breakthroughs in the industry may make the strategy ineffective; or that buyer s
interest may swing to other differentiating features besides price. Firms that succeed in cost
leadership often have the following internal strengths: Access to the capital required to make a
significant investment in production assets; this investment represents a barrier to entry that many
firms may not overcome. Skill in designing products for efficient manufacturing, for example,
having a small component count to shorten the assembly process. High level of expertise in
manufacturing process engineering. Efficient distribution channels. Its high market share means
that it will have high bargaining power relative to its suppliers and its low price will also serve as
a barrier to entry. Differentiation Strategies It is aimed at the broad mass market and involves the
creation of a product or service that is perceived unique throughout the industry. The company or

The Importance and Use of Disclosure
In this section we will introduce the background knowledge of our topic, and we will show the
motivation of this paper by discussing related prior literature.
A disclosure is additional information attached to an entity s financial statements, usually as an
explanation for activities, which have significantly influenced the entity s financial results. In the
United States, this disclosure is usually found in the notes of financial statements, and many also can
be found in the notes section of the corporate annual report. Basically, the purpose of accounting
disclosure is to inform both current and potential investors of the accounting strategies and methods
used when developing periodic corporate financial statements.
Through disclosure, there are several effects the management wants to reach. First, managers often
issue earnings forecasts to reduce information asymmetry and therefore influence their firm s
stock price (e.g., Nagar et al. 2003). Second, managers forecast, particularly when they involve
bad news, is aimed at avoiding litigation or at least minimizing the cost of subsequent litigation.
Field et al. (200S) find that preemptive bad news forecasts are useful in deterring certain types of
lawsuits. Third, analysts update their forecasts in response to firms earnings forecasts and recent
evidence suggests that approximately 60 percent of analysts revise their forecasts within five days
of management guidance (Cotter et al. 2006). Kim and Verrecchia (1994)

Glover s Reef is a part of the second largest reef system in the world, the Belize Reef. In recent
years, mostly due to tourism growth and the respective development for the tourists, ocean
pollution has damaged many of species that live in Belize Reef. While the government has
imposed a national reservation on the area that protects it from human destruction, it simply has

Europe and the Middle East are different linguistically, religiously, and historically. Was there any
actual basis for President Obama s comparison? Or was this speech another instance of a politician
making a grand generalization to prove a point? Upon further examination, both Polands Solidarity

Eventually, the workers themselves began to organize and publicly demand rights. The last
group in Polish society who was responsible for achieving success in the Solidarity movement
was the religious sector. The religious support that the Solidarity movement possessed cannot be
overlooked. On the protestor s side, it s easy to fight for your rights when you know that God
supports you. On the other hand, it s difficult for the government to fight against a religious
institution that has such powerful influence over the people. Pope John Paul II, originally a
Polish citizen named Karol Wojtyla, played a key role in not only broadcasting the Solidarity
movement to the world, but also by giving the Solidarity movement a pseudo divine right to
exist . In 1978, Karol Wojtyla was elected to be the first non Italian pope since the 1500s . Thus
began the attention that he drew not only from the international Catholic community, but the
international community in general. Furthermore, in his visit to Poland, he affirmed the Polish
people s right to organize themselves, and to protest against their mistreatment. In 1979, the
year before Solidarity was officially formed, Pope John Paul II visited his home country once

Term Limits In American Politics
For many years in American politics there are constantly debates on whether or not there should be
term limits imposed on politicians. Term limits have worked their way through Congress into
many cities and counties across America. With much support for term limits from Americans, it
shows how unsatisfied they are with politicians. But there are other ways to get politicians out of
office without term limits. With peoples vote there can be someone new to take the role and do a
better job than the last. Term limits would also decrease experience and would not help anyone
gain more knowledge for their job. In essence, limits are not needed for United StatesSenators and
Representatives. All Americans eighteen and older have a right to vote. If people do not like their
current U.S. Senator or Representative that is running in an election for another term, they simply

Safety Culture Is The Common Beliefs And Ways
Culture is the common beliefs and ways of doing things shared between those who learned their
ways in the same environment. Safety culture is, however much of the same with a developed
attitude towards safety. Safety culture can be strong, where people within an organization report
incidents that occur or even when they had the opportunity to occur. On the other hand safety
culture can also be poor where incidents are hidden or swept under the carpet and no action can be
taken to decrease the possibility of it from happening again. Tools have been developed to assess the
safety culture in many different organizations, usually those that have a high risk. Rules and
regulations are typically implemented following incidents resulting in fatalities. Nuclear, medical
and aviation are some of the main industries that have begun assessing safety culture within their
organizations and implementing SMS systems to help distinguish situations that could have
potentially caused an incident.
Over the years safety has been taken more and more seriously and the safety culture throughout
many organizations in general has been greatly improved upon. This has been mainly due to
mishaps and incidents in the past that have led to fatalities. Following these incidents have been
regulations and measures to ensure that the same thing is less likely to occur or possibly even
impossible to occur again. Since so many regulations are now in place incidents are few and far

Mathilde Loisel did, she did nothing to stop herself from being so envious. ...she was unhappy as if

selfish and envious character through her personality, her actions, and her dialogue.
First, the author develops her character through her personality. On page three it says, The day

gave her the money he was setting aside for himself to buy her a dress, she still rather wouldn t

Relationships that are not traditionally accepted result in negative consequences. Father Dowling
blindly goes into making a relationship with two street walkers without even thinking about the
consequences. The society he lives in does not see prostitutes as humans with rights. Father
Dowling felt more love for them than for any one he had known in his parish, a curious, new love
that gave him a strange contentment (18). He feels a new emotion when he meets these two
girls and since he feels a strange contentment, he could potentially be feeling a fleshy love,
instead of a divine love. He keeps fooling himself into thinking that his love is just divine, but he
is hesitating on which type of affection he is giving to the girls. The relationship between a
priest and two prostitutes will not be accepted within their society and leads to many negative
consequences. In addition, the loss of rationality in decision making is an effect of radical shifts
in opinion. Father Dowling convinces himself that the girls need his love the most because no
one loves them for who they are. He decides to continue to help them and has a different opinion
on what the church believes to be correct. He only focuses on the girls and their well being and
completely forgets to send money to his mother who is also deserving of his love and support. He
is becoming irrational with the choices he is making because his opinion is

Negative Consequences Of Gentrification
I.What is the nature of the issue/problem and how is it framed? East Los Angeles (Boyle Heights)
is undergoing the process of Gentrification. Gentrification is defined as the process of renovating
and improving a house or district so that it conforms to middle class taste. Some scholars define
gentrification as private sector initiated residential and commercial investment in urban
neighborhoods accompanied by inflows of households with higher socioeconomic status than the
neighborhood s initial residents. (Vigdor, Massey and Rivlin, 2002, P. 135). One of the problems
with gentrification in Boyle Heights is that the community members that are currently residing and
working in Boyle Heights are not middle class and thus, the gentrification does not apply to them.
The nature of the problem stems from the unintended consequences of revitalizing a district or a
home and history. On the surface, the word revitalization/gentrification appears to be a good thing.
However, when revitalization s sole purpose is to target a specific social economic group, it creates
a wave of problems. Some of those problems or unintended consequences, include but are not
limited to, displacing families that have lived in a community for decades or even centuries, driving
businesses out, create tensions in communities that insight protest and/or unrest. According to
research, some potential negative outcomes of gentrification most importantly, the displacement of
previous occupants of urban

My Porch Description
There was a tiny home invader on my porch. I came home from school to find a very large and
intimidating spider spinning a web on the side of my porch. Naturally, I quickly ran inside, i was
about to get a tissue to deposit it far, far away, from anywhere near me, but I stopped. Why was
there a large spideron my porch? It was just sitting along the side of it, completely exposed. It was
probably a good place to catch flies since it was near the trash can, but it was left completely
exposed. The side of my back porch was right by the door to go inside, Wouldn t it build a web
somewhere safer? Why here? Curious, I went out to look again, staying well apart in case it tried
to jump. The web stood out, a gossamer orb against the pale yellow of my porch. In the center the
spider a she, I suppose rested.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are two elm trees growing in front of my house, giants. My house was built in 1871 and the
street, Elm Street, named before that. It s possible those two trees have been growing for
centuries. An elm tree can supposedly live to be 300. By that estimate, my trees are barely
halfway done. In the morning, the early October chill pushed me to dash from the house and get
to school without stopping to philosophize about spiders. When I got home, again there was the
similar flash of fear and apprehension upon seeing her. She hadn t attempted to jump at me, or
even crawl closer, but she was still vaguely threatening. Inside the house, in spiderless comfort, I
looked up what this brown banded little spider might be. Online I came across a picture that a was
perfect candid of the tiny home invader on my porch. When I followed the link, I had a name: the
Banded Garden Spider. Argiopetrifasciata was an orb weaver, thankfully not poisonous, jumping,
or dangerous in the slightest. Their diet was commonly flies, aphids, wasps, bees, and
grasshoppers. It made sense why she was near the trash can where flies

Dust Jackets For The Niggerati
All Stories Are True: Visual Narrative and Revisionary History in the Artwork of Kara Walker In
the collection of essays titled Dust Jackets for the Niggerati (2013), Kevin Young s seminal
article Miss Pipi s Blue Tale details Kara Walker s work with the American Bureau of Freedmen,
Refugees, and abandoned Lands, the office that kept records of the displaced blacks after the
American Civil War, documenting the violent offenses enacted by whites upon blacks at that time.
Walker s exhibition Bureau of Refugees (2007), a series of silhouette collages in reds, greens, and
blacks, draws from these historical accounts not only to call attention to the atrocities of white
violence against black bodies, but also to reclaim and lend voice to a... Show more content on

What might it mean then, to be a refugee not from another country, but in one s very homeland?
(45). These questions are posed by what Young calls the refugee art of Kara Walker. As
displaced subjects, the characters in Walker s art take on a renewed sense of empowerment
even while falling victim to and participating in acts of violence and humiliation. This paper
seeks to explore issues of spectatorship and agency in the artwork of Kara Walker, taking into
special consideration the critical essays of Kevin Young in the catalogue My Complement, My
Enemy, My Oppressor, My Love (2007) and Dust Jackets for the Niggerati (2013) alongside a
full length study of the artist by Gwendolyn DuBois Shaw titled Seeing the Unspeakable: The Art
of Kara Walker (2004). Both authors discuss the revisionary history of Walker s visual narratives,
yet formulate conclusions from two very different frames of reference. While Young examines
Walker s art from various cultural and historical perspectives, Shaw s reading takes into account
the personal experiences that influence Walker s work. Much of Walker s art takes the form of
visual narrative, telling stories with images and words. The artist has said that the genre of
narrative allows her room to blend fact with fiction, creating new ways to negotiate past experience
and imagine the future. Walker takes ownership of the

Compare And Contrast The Society And The Giver
Most individuals are having their own idealistic society. They dream an imaginary place or state
in which everything is perfect which is called utopia. People who lived there, are having a happy
life without pain and disappointment just like The Giver. Seems to perfect society, people s
lives are very well organized, they do not decide to work, do not decide spouse, these societies
have done for the people to decide. And this world does not have any memory, emotion, color and
music. They only have the most basic needs of life. Compare our realistic society in china and the
community in the book The Giver, which are totally having some difference and similarity.

Blade Runner Modernism
The movie I chose to watch was Blade runner which screened back in 1982.
The plot is set in the year of 1982 in Los Angeles, California.
The protagonist of this film is Deckard, an ex cop who is back on duty to catch replicants that
are bioengineered robots in an identical body of a human being. The antagonists are 6 replicates
who have found their way back to Earth illegally from an off Earth location in order to find their
creator, Tyrell to get knowledge on how to extend their lives. The conflict that lies in the heart of
this movie is the replicants are causing a ruckus and have killed 20 people already in order to get
to their maker to get answers. The era in the film reflects the near future in which bioengineered
robots were created ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What it demonstrates is it is no longer possible to be clear about what it means to be human
anymore. Through the use of a certain production style, postmodernism is seen in this film as it
broke many barriers known to man as modernism. Through the use of music, camera angles and
costumes, it is clear that although the set is in 2019, some aspects of the film show aspects from
the 1980 s culture. One of the similarities that I connected to Blade runner was the theme music
from Mad Men has a gloomy and dark feel to just as Blade runner s opening them music giving
the audience a sense of fright. The outlook of this movie is mostly postmodernist due to many
characteristic that prove so. This is when technological progress in the film is seen to have
failed humans as the world in the film is polluted by industries, and is overcrowded while the
rich escape to the off worlds to live in peace. Also, electronic billboards give the audience an
insight of what 2019 would look like. Besides that, Los Angeles in that year is filled with
different cultures with all kinds of foreign people. Also the architecture proves this film is most
postmodernist as most buildings are unusual to the era this movie was made in. Another reason
that helps prove this is a postmodern film in terms of its style is the 4 year life span of the
replicants, as it suggests a quicker life in the near future similar to today s day and age where
humans wonder where the day went due to this accelerated lifestyle we are all eventually getting
accustomed

Theories Of Pragmatics
Why are there so many theories in pragmatics concerning meaning in language? Why is the study
of language use crucial to understanding meaning in language? How does the development over
time of the main theories in pragmatics show a greater understanding of language use?
Introduction First of all, what do we understand with meaning? What is it? Meaning seems like a
very straightforward concept but it is very obscure indeed. As human beings we are designed to
acquire meaning from the world, it allows us make a conceptualization of the world. It is the most
important feature of language, as the main purpose of language is to communicate with each other,
in other words, to know what we mean . This looks quite straightforward and obvious as I have
mentioned before, but what makes meaning so hard to understand is the little consciousness that
we have of the knowledge and principles that govern our communicative ability that make us
humans. As Aristotle said in Politics, Man is by nature a social animal; an individual who is
unsocial naturally... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The term context is vast, but it can be defined as the elements that surround an utterance and
determine its meaning. The meaning of the utterances is inferred, that means that the meaning is
implicit and is interpreted subjectively which also affects to the number of interpretations that
can derive from one context. One same sentence can have two different meaning in a different
context. For instance, consider two people, Jane and Ron, who have just started dating. If Ron
says to Jane at the end of the night, I like you a lot. Jane will most likely feel great about the
situation. But imagine that Jane and Ron have been dating for some weeks now, and Jane asks,
Do you love me? Now if Ron says, I like you a lot, her reaction will most definitely be very
different, as Ron s statement would be taken as a negative

Hume on Custom Habit
First Paper Assignment; Hume on Customs and Habits Custom, then, is the great guide of
human life. It is that principle alone which renders our experience useful to us, and makes us
expect, for the future, a similar train of events with those which have appeared in the past.
Without the influence of custom, we should be entirely ignorant of every matter of fact beyond
what is immediately present to the memory and senses. We should never know how to adjust
means to ends, or to employ our natural powers in the production of any effect. There would be
an end at once of all action, as well as of the chief part of speculation. (Hume, Enquiry) Hume is a
philosopher who believes in the Copy Principle. That all ideas derive from vivid... Show more

Hume has concluded that Customs and Habits attained from past experience are necessary for us
to navigate about the world. When these experiences are repeated and the outcomes are
consistent, we build a causal relation between the ideas and naturally accept the Principle of
Uniformity of Nature. With this we have created a custom by which grants us the reason to look
forward to and expect for the future. The absence of custom and expectance may lead to a
meaningless and aimless life. References Perry, Bratman and Fischer (eds.), (2010). Introduction to

Friar Lawrence To Blame Essay
In the play, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, I say the deaths of Romeo and Juliet
were Friar Lawrence s fault. I say this because he didn t involve one of the main characters,
Romeo, in a plan that later was ruined because Romeo didn t know. I also say this because Friar
Lawrence was quite a hypocrite. Primarily, I say Friar Lawrence is to blame for Romeo and
Juliet s deaths because he did not involve Romeo in a plan to have Juliet appear dead,so she
could get away from her parents, and get out of marrying Paris. First off, Friar Lawrence sent
Friar John, but he did not get the message to Romeo, that he needed to go to the Capulet s tomb
and get Juliet away when she wakes up. Because Romeo did not know about the poison, when
Balthasar tells Romeo she was dead, he went to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To be specific, Friar Lawrence told Romeo when he and Juliet wanted Friar Lawrence to marry
them, I stand on sudden haste. Wisely and slow, they stumble that run fast. Here he is saying to
take things slow, don t rush things. Later on when Friar Lawrence and Juliet were trying to
make a plan on how to avoid Juliet having to marry Paris the next day, and instead of making a
well thought out plan, he quickly made one, and it failed. This shows that he is a hypocrite for
not taking it slow, even though that s the advice he gave Romeo earlier. As a matter of fact, he
then married Romeo and Juliet, trying to end the feud between their families, but later on he
knew he would be punished if the families knew he married them. Also when people were
coming towards the tomb, he wanted Juliet to run and stay with the nuns so no one would know
what he did. Friar Lawrence also rushed the part of the plan involving Romeo, that part failed, and
that is where is all went wrong. Friar Lawrence is a hypocrite for not following his own advice he
gave, and not sticking with his plan all along, stop the feud the Montagues and Capulets

Influencing Socio Political Cultural Factors Essay
Theory Application Paper: Ma Vie en Rose (My Life in Pink)
Influencing Socio Political Cultural Factors 1) Identify two forces of the dominant culture that you
observed in the film that influenced the family s reactions to Ludovic and/or the family s
functioning. Describe the family s resulting responses or behaviors. Be sure to give clear examples
from the movie to illustrate your thoughts. (1 page) A dominant culture subsists as a culture that
has great influence, predominance, and authority within a societal or dogmatic context and its
dominance can be realized through various processes including financial strength, violence or the
threat of violence, or across more subtle methods of supremacy and relegation (Sue Sue, 2016).
Consequently, the Fabre family in Ma Vie en Rose is oppressed by the dominant culture in their
White, middle class neighborhood in France, which dictates the norms of the neighborhood. The
Father, Pierre Fabre, has moved his family directly across the street from his conservative boss
whose traditionalist ideas are represented by the dominant culture of the neighborhood and he uses
his power to influence the Fabre family and the community. The first force of dominant culture
evident in this film was the unalterable influence that society has in shaping subjective indications
of what gender entails. In respect to Ludovic and the transgender community, the author will
identify Ludovic with the pronouns she/her throughout this paper. The

Thomas Polk s County And The Founding And Progress Of...
Thomas Polk in Mecklenburg County, 1750 1800
With over 250 years of history as a county in North Carolina, Mecklenburg County has an extensive
and fascinating story to tell. Established in 1762, the county that I call home has been a part of this
country since before we gained our independence from Great Britain. When most Americans hear
the surname Polk, they automatically think of our nation s eleventh president, James Knox Polk. A
fraction of those people are able to tell you that James was born in Mecklenburg County and spent
the first ten or so years of his life in present day Pineville. Very few, however, could tell you of
James great uncle, Thomas Polk, who was crucial to the founding and progress of Mecklenburg
County.
Through my research, I have found numerous Polks who were either born in, raised in, or simply
moved to Mecklenburg County. Some of these people had a minor impact on the area, but
Thomas Polk influenced Mecklenburg County in a much bigger way. Polk had numerous
accolades. Among them are Revolutionary War soldier, local political leader, prominent land
surveyor, and government executive. In this paper, the time period is restricted from circa 1750
until circa 1800. These approximate dates correspond to the arrival of Thomas Polk to
Mecklenburg County, and to his death. Nearly every aspect of this era of Mecklenburg County
history has been touched in some aspect by Thomas Polk.
The journey of the Polk family to the North Carolina Piedmont region is

they react to situations. Challenge refers to individual s attitude toward challenge and change.
Maddi found that individuals who were resistance to change, and did not embrace challenge had

  • 2. Gangs Of New York Sociology The movie begins in New York, in 1843, with a gang fight. Bill the butcher Cutting s gang of nativists have challenged the dead rabbits (a gang of mostly Irish immigrants) to a fight to settle once and for all who is the most powerful gang in the area. After an intense battle the nativists win by killing the leader of the dead rabbits, also Amsterdam s (the main characters) father. Amsterdam is then led into an orphanage where he grows to be a man, all while Bill Cutting runs the Five Points, and most of New York. The Five Points is a district of New York City and obviously the most corrupt. Crime is all to common, and sickness runs rampant in the area. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The movie has so many scenes (it s two hours and forty five minutes long) it s hard to pick a favorite. If I had to it would be the ending scene though, where the Draft Riots are in full force and finally Amsterdam and Jenny visit the graves of Bill Cutting and Amsterdam s father, followed by a time laps scene of the graveyard and the New York City skyline. The ending scene is important because it puts the whole movie into perspective. You get so caught up in the fighting, and crime that you forget the big picture. With the Union Army s actions it shows how weak and ridiculous the gangs in New York were. Simply, gangs were (and to some extent still are) nothing but a certain demographic joining in large numbers only to force their ideas on the majority. The scene also touches on the fact that presently no one remembers or cares about the gangs or the riots, furthering the idea of the pointlessness of it. Historically speaking, the movie relates the United States history poorly. It has many accuracies historically, but the problems far outweigh them. First though, the accuracies. The movie depicts the Five Points in New York as being poor, pestilent, and ugly. This is true to history. The district was doomed to slumhood from the beginning. It was erected on the filled in Collect Pond, which ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Why Did Macduff Destroy Macbeth In Macbeth, Act 4: 2, we can see that Macbeth has reached a point in his life where he will do anything and kill anyone to ensure his stature in the kingdom is protected. We analyzed this when he first murdered King Duncan and then had Banquo, his best friend, assassinated. With his constant homicides come sleepless nights and hallucinations of ghosts. Eventually, his wife goes crazy because of her guilty conscience of provoking her husband into committing the murders, and dies right before the battle between Macbethand Macduff occurs. One chief motive behind Macduff s purpose to destroy Macbeth is what act 4: 2 is about. Macbeth has Macduff s family, and all who were in his home, slaughtered. This engages Malcolm, who was suspected of his... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So the number of liars outnumbers the amount of trustworthy citizens. Therefore, the term, fair is foul, and foul is fair, means that people who are nice and trustworthy should, and are, killed, like Banquo and the family and people or Macduff s home. In return, People who are foul villains, are now trusted? Comparing to the real world of today, there are those who make promises and break them, but they are not so severe that they need to be hanged for doing so. However, those who break their promises very often are perceived as untrustworthy and individuals learn not to converse or make agreements with them. • 4. Marxist Analysis On Class Conflict In Lord Of The Flies A Marxist Analysis on Class Conflict in Lord of the Flies The Ideology of Golding refers to the Cold War conflict between the Open minded Democracy in his presentation of Ralph whereas Jack is the authoritarian communism. Based on Dobie, Ann Brewster s Wadsworth Cengage Learning, 2008 we know that Marxists do not see any literary works as an appealing article but as products of the socioeconomic aspects. Similarly Lord of the Flies authenticates a Marxist principle explained by the Class Conflict in the boys attempts of civilization and decentralization. Regardless of the boys imitation of the social group that they think would reflect the adult world believably it turned into barbarity and bloodstained violence. Marxism is as always quoted ... Piggy is devoted to the ideal of civilization and consistently warning the other boys for behaving as barbarians. On the contrary, is the personality of Jack, He demonstrates Militarism as it borders on Totalitarianism. He is cruel and preoccupied with hunting and slaying pigs. His sadism builds up during the course of the novel, and he eventually turns cruelly on the other boys; He fakes an interest in the rules established on the island by Ralph, but only if they allow him to impose punishment. • 7. How Does Terry Malloy Change In On The Waterfront On the Waterfront is set on the docks, a very dismal place. The black and white photography make the streets, alleyways and small, cramped apartments seem dark and bleak. While the union bosses live well, the workers seem trapped by their situation, with no way to get out. Terry Malloy is a low level worker for the union boss, who is not really aware that he is a part of the corruption. He is asked to lure Joey Doyle to the roof of his apartment building, and believes that the union men just want to lean on him a little bit (On the Waterfront) about testifying before the waterfront crime commission. However, for most of the characters, choosing to do what is right can be difficult. Opposing the union bosses can be dangerous, as evidenced by the deaths of Andy, Joey and Kayo. Therefore, many of the dock workers prefer to do nothing and remain alive. Other characters, such as Father Barry and Edie, have a strong internal moral code, and personal considerations do not impact their decision to do what is right. However, in the case of Terry, his background and current affiliations present a number of obstacles which prevent him from freely listening to what his conscience is telling him to do. Terry is owned by Johnny Friendly, and cannot protest against the jobs that are given to him. This ownership goes back to the days when Terry was a prize fighter, and was made to take a fall when Friendly bet against him. Charley, Terry s older brother, is a key member of Friendly s group, and was the one who told Terry he had to take the fall. When Friendly learns that Terry has been subpoenaed to appear before the crime commission, he sends Charley to persuade Terry to stop seeing Edie, and take a high paying job with the union. Terry refuses and Charley pays the price with his life. When Terry goes looking for Friendly to get revenge, Father Barry tells him: don t fight him like a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Casten and project engineer Brennan Downes frame the consequences of meeting up with the demands of power energy with central generation or letting go of decentralized generation that recycles waste energy. They go on to summarize how a new power generation has been built over the past 30 years under given circumstances of technology that was available at the time, the cost of technology and fuel prices, and conclusion of their ideas. From 1910 to 1960, electricity was originally produced by either using hydroelectric dams or burning fossil fuels in order to deliver power to cities and buildings. But those methods proved to be... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Having these turbines and machines located directly within large populations rather than many miles away was an advantage. Although, they found that using multiple engines and turbines was more cost effective and less harmful in transmission, electric industries weren t being fair because they began to charge consumers at very high rates. To regulate the situation in 1978, Congress stepped in and wanted to create competition within the industry in the year. Independent power companies began to advance and develop on site generation in areas made able to regulate the monopoly. Today, most power companies think that centralized electrical energy gives the most favorable results for all. To support this belief, the International Energy Agency predicted a significant increase in numbers for the next thirty years as our world s need for electrical power continues to grow every second. According to Figure 1 in the article, the electricity generation capacity for the world will increase by almost 4,500 GW to reach 8,000 GW total. With the demand for burning fossil fuels to increase by 90% and great amount of carbon dioxide emission, we will negatively affect our environments with this huge contribution to global warming. To meet our increasing reliance and demand for this resource, central generation of electricity will also critically affect the tax market, fossil fuel market, and our world s environment as a whole. These types of companies understand what it takes to complete most aspects of the jobs they are bidding on. When they provide a prospective customer with a job cost sheet it breaks down material costs, labor costs, and overhead costs to show their customer where the costs are going to be incurred. These types of companies know how many hours it will take to assemble parts, construct parts of a house, repair pipes, and many other types of work of this nature. These companies spend time analyzing their costs per job to compute a standard for each category of their jobs and identify cost drivers to come to a standard cost. • 10. Zoos Literature Review Are the enclosures in zoos safe and beneficial for the animals? Both authors have different opinions when it comes to zoo enclosure, but Benbow focuses on how the enclosures have improved over the years, where Fraser focuses on how the improved enclosures are still not quite safe enough for the animals. This helped me to understand that although the enclosures have improved, they still need some work. In an article by S.M.P. Benbow called Zoos: Public Places to View Private Lives, she discusses how zoo enclosures have improved over time. She goes into detail about how the enclosures started as something that was supposed to be exactly like there habitat, and as time goes on it has gotten more real. Benbow also discusses the different technological advances in the enclosures, and how they are a space that represents a different place (Benbow, 2000, p 13 23). S.M.P. Benbow worked in the Department Environment and Geography at the University of Manitoba, and is now the Associate Dean at the Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources. This particular article was part of her Peer Reviewed works. The motivation behind this work and many others is her love of the environment. This article is a peer reviewed article, so the structure and language is professional and scholarly. This article puts a lot of emphasis on zoos being developed to be like their natural habitats. The majority of the article gives detail on the development of zoos over the years. The author takes time to explain everything, and backs up all evidence with quotes and information from other sources. Benbow seems incredibly knowledgeable on Zoos and the environment. She also leaves out her opinion most of the time and give mostly facts, but she seems to think the advancements made have helped improve enclosures. This author makes the idea of zoos seem less bad by explaining how the enclosures have improved tremendously (Benbow, 2000, p 13 23). In an article written by Stephen Fraser called Safe Havens, he discusses how enclosures are still not safe enough. Fraser starts off with a story of a tiger who jumped over and attacked three men. • 13. How Samuel Adams Set a Brush Fire in the Minds of the People It does not require a majority to prevail, but rather an irate, tireless minority keen to set brush fires in people s minds. This is a quote from Samuel Adams. He truly lived his life according to this statement. Adams spent his life as part of the irate, tireless minority, and as he would put it, he set many brush fires in people s minds. As the leader of the Sons of Liberty, a patriotic rebel group, he convinced many people to stand against British rule. He knew that he did not need as many people as the British; he just needed a group of bold and risky people to stand firm in their beliefs. Born on September 27, 1722 to Samuel and Mary Adams in Boston, Massachusetts, Samuel Adams had a promising future. His family was wealthy and respected church members. As a teenager, he attended Boston Latin School and Harvard. At one point, his family lost much of their money and Adams had to work as a waiter. This helped him better understand the less wealthy people in Boston. He knew how high taxes could affect the income of an average family. This could have inspired him to become a patriotic leader, instead of the church leader that his father wanted him to be. Even though Adams was not a deacon or minister, he still held on to his Puritan beliefs he was raised with. Adams tried to be a businessman in his early life, but quickly found that business was not his talent. In 1765, he was elected to the Massachusetts Assembly, where he served as a clerk for seven ... Importantly, social categories are bounded by and are often dichotomised in both the private and public psyche. Markus et al further argue that Australia s current social and political responses to difference are situated within the broader context of colonial invasion, Indigenous oppression and the White Australia Policy. In the political power play and linguistic treatment of the emblematically powerless reveals not only core party values, but varying conceptions of Australian identity. This is especially recognisable when political debate is considered in the context of three distinct time periods and political situations, demonstrating a transient grasp of elusive Australianness in a society defined not by what is desirable, but what is not, thereby degrading ideals of multi cultural egalitarianism. Put simply, Australia s postcolonial desire to control its borders and regulate the Hegelian Other underpins the politicisation of the boat people phenomenon. • 15. The Solar Of Solar Power Essay Solar Power Innovations Solar Power has been observed as early as the year of 1839 by a French physicist named Alexandre Edmond Becquerel. He invented the first photovoltaic cell. Since then his studies and works have been perfected on and continue to change the world in which we live for the better. Photovoltaic cells have constantly been evolving ever since. In 1883, Charles Fritts built the first solid state photovoltaic cell using materials such as gold and selenium. With further advances to the system, scientist were able to recreate the cell in a way that could serve as an alternative power source on the satellite named Vanguard that was flown into space in the year of 1958. In the 1970 s there was an oil crisis when Middle Eastern countries proclaimed a trading ban, encouraging oil companies to buy solar firms. Funded research allowed for first, second and third generation cells to be constructed. Currently, the cost of solar energyhas exponentially decreased with the falling price of silicon, allowing for many new innovations to take place. Thin solar film is a second generation cell that is being commercially used. The creation of solar thin film allowed us to reduce cost even further as it is printed in rolls which can be incorporated into things like building materials instead of having to have big bulky expensive panels. The film is lightweight, flexible and most importantly, affordable. Over the past few years, the thin solar film has become more efficient ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. The Existence Of Evil By Blackburn Theory Introduction: 53 In Blackburn theory I am going to argue that his theory the existence of evil strongly suggests that there does not exist a God who is all good, all knowing and all powerful to be false. In my argument I will try to present facts that show the existence of God and why there is evil. Exposition: 313 In Blackburn s argument he basically mentions that because there is evil in the world there is no existence of a present creator. It is impossible to see the suffering that s going on in the world and suggest that it s a part of a good plan. Why would a creator of all good be able to stand by and watch individuals suffer, and of all knowing and powerful why not put an end to all suffering at once. Logically a creator of all good and all powerful would be able to put a stop to suffering and evil immediately. Blackburn also mentions that religious individuals state that because of free will the world is what it is today. The notion that Godcreated a perfect world with humans having free will and because of the misuse of that free will evil is present. Blackburn is against this idea total, he mentioned we couldn t have free will without the influence of the past we can be free to do whatever we want and potentially to be blame for it, but the will is the influence of the past so we basically doing what the past tell us which is determinism. The author creates this mood by relaying the tale through the eyes of a man in mourning and through the appearance of a black Raven who consistency answers nevermore Even the atmosphere inside and outside of the home where the man is living appears dark and dreary which adds to the mood being set by the author. The poem is introduced with a man mourning over his recently dead wife, Lenore. He is in his home grieving. • 19. Examples Of Flashbacks In Toni Morrison s Beloved Beloved: How the Past Affects a Person Beloved is full of intense scenes that leave readers on the edge of their seats wondering what will happen next. Some of the most powerful scenes are flashbacks, past experiences that characters come face to face with. What makes these flashbacks so important is that they help make the reader understand why the characters interact with each other the way they do. In Beloved, Toni Morrison uses a loose structure and weaves flashbacks into everyday life to create a connection through which readers can better understand the character s past. In the beginning of the novel, the reader is introduced to the idea of flashbacks, which remain short and are intertwined seamlessly within the text. The readers learn to be active when reading, and also pay close attention to the details within the flashbacks to learn more about the characters that their past lives. The most significant flashbacks in Part One are when the reader learns about Sethe s past, and how she killed her crawling already? baby. Inside, two boys bled in the sawdust at the feet of a nigger woman holding a blood soaked child to her chest with one hand and an infant by the heels in the other (Morrison 175). Here is where the reader first learns how the crawling already baby dies: Sethe killed her and attempted to kill the rest of the children. When Sethe saw the schoolteacher, she ran to the shed to try to save her children from slavery. She tried to make the ultimate sacrifice ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 20. Robert Scholes on Video Texts According to Robert Scholes, author of On Reading a Video Text, commercials aired on television hold a dynamic power over human beings on a subconscious level. He believes that through the use of specific tools, commercials can hold the minds of an audience captive, and can control their abilities to think rationally. Visual fascination, one of the tools Scholes believes captures the minds of viewers, can take a simple video, and through the use of editing and special effects, turn it into a powerful scene which one simply cannot take his or her eyes from. Narrativity is yet another way Scholes feels commercials can take control of the thoughts of a person sitting in front of the television. Through the use of specific words, sounds,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We are simply awestruck by seeing something we cannot on our own. The Budweiser commercial in question uses narrativity throughout itself to not only tell the story of the umpire, but to tell the story of America, to tell the story of our national pastime, to tell the story of the young black man who has worked ever so hard to make it, when he finally does. While watching the young umpire working a game, we hear the narrator s voice, In the minors you got to make all the calls, and then one day you get the call (Scholes, p. 620), Budweiser uses this catchy phrase in order to grab our attention, to focus us on the commercial in order to look for the blossoming story. This slight play on words has a great effect on a viewer due to the fact that our minds think about the statement, and by the time we realize what is actually happening, the commercial has shown us that the black umpire has just gotten his call. Later in the commercial, after the game has obviously ended, we see the umpire sitting in the same bar as the manager who confronted him about his bad call during the game. The old white manager with the history of [baseball] written on [his face] (Scholes, p. 621) holds up his bottle of Budweiser to the young black umpire, and toasts him with it. Imogene King s theory of goal attainment focused on the cooperation between nurses and patients (Masters, 2015). King was convinced that nurses had to help people to maintain fundamental aspects of their health and hence ensure wellness (Masters, 2015). • 27. Excerpts From Being And Time By Martin Dasein Analysis An Outline Summary: Excerpts from Being and Time (1927) (Dasein s Possibility of Being a Whole, and Being towards Death) Martin Heidegger Martin Heidegger started his argument by saying that once the Dasein reaches its death, it then loses its state of being there and is now transitioning to a no longer dasein state and will take it as an experience. However, death of the Other, as he said, is rather impressive and the termination of Dasein, in turn, will be Objectively accessible therefore making bounds of the Dasein s totality. Even with the Other s death, in its no longer Dasein state and Being no longer in the world, it is still considered as a Being just in the Being just present at hand and no more of a bodily thing that we will encounter. The coming of an end of an entity qua Dasein is the coming forth of beginning of the same entity qua something present at hand. The changing over of Dasein to that of the Being just present at hand and no more doesn t necessarily imply that we are not presented with such mere corporeal Thing. Even if reaching the peak of death, a dead corpse can be of use to someone who is seeking for the meaning or idea of life. This such being is not to be confused as a lifeless material for it may have lost its life but it still always something more than that. He then defined deceased as that which ... • 28. The Dred Scott Case Against Slavery In the 1780s, there was a question of whether slavery would be tolerable in new territories to threaten the Union. Throughout the decades, many compromises were made to avoid disunion. But the Constitution was not clear on this subject which created quite the discussion nationwide when raised in 1857 before the Supreme Court in the form of the Dred Scott case. The Dred Scott decision was an eye opener to Northerners that believed slavery was acceptable as long as it stayed in the South. If the decision took away any power Congress once had to regulate slavery in new territories, slavery could quickly expand into much of the western United States. Realizing that once slavery expanded into those territories, it could quickly spread into the once free states. Many Northerners remained silent on the issue, this very possibility was too scary to ignore. Northerners who had not previously been against the South and against slavery began to realize that if they did not stop slavery now, they might never again have the chance. The growing fear in the North helped further contributed to an ongoing dispute between the two sides which eventually lead to the Civil War. A couple years after Chief Justice Taney read Scott v. Sandford decision, half of the Union had seceded and the nation was engaged in civil war. However, because of the passions it created on both sides, Taney s decision certainly quickly accelerated the start of conflict. Even in 1865, as the long and bloody ... Western Influence on Japanese Business Management Essay Japanese management: how the western influence and the 1990s crises have modified management practices in Japan, and in Japanese companies broadly speaking? Introduction Japan has been the second largest power in the world for several decades, now. As a quite remote island in Asia, its history and development shaped a country with its own way of thinking and behaving, and as far as we are concerned, with a great economy and a technological lead over its Asian neighbours. After the Second World War (WWII), Japan started from scratch, and its business succeeded very well, first on the domestic market and then on a world scale. Based on their original religion (Shinto), the cult of the ancestors is widespread and, in Japan, people are much more respectful of their parents than in Western countries. In the same way, decision making and socialisation processes are seen very differently, for Japanese will tend to take much time and involve many people to evolve a plan, but then will implement it directly and by themselves, with more pleasure than Westerners who are deemed to make quick and undemocratic decisions, but execute them slowly and indirectly. As a result, Japanese would be more willing to work and more productive because of their understanding of what a strategy means: politeness, team work, friendship and harmony are key features of the Japanese culture. This can be seen in the sense of community which strikes every foreigner: the individual is under represented whereas the group as a whole is always put on the foreground, hence the famous obedience and respect of Japanese people. Differentiation is a strategy aimed at producing products and services considered unique industry wide and directed at customers who are relatively price insensitive. The Importance and Use of Disclosure In this section we will introduce the background knowledge of our topic, and we will show the motivation of this paper by discussing related prior literature. A disclosure is additional information attached to an entity s financial statements, usually as an explanation for activities, which have significantly influenced the entity s financial results. In the United States, this disclosure is usually found in the notes of financial statements, and many also can be found in the notes section of the corporate annual report. Basically, the purpose of accounting disclosure is to inform both current and potential investors of the accounting strategies and methods used when developing periodic corporate financial statements. Through disclosure, there are several effects the management wants to reach. First, managers often issue earnings forecasts to reduce information asymmetry and therefore influence their firm s stock price (e.g., Nagar et al. 2003). Second, managers forecast, particularly when they involve bad news, is aimed at avoiding litigation or at least minimizing the cost of subsequent litigation. Field et al. (200S) find that preemptive bad news forecasts are useful in deterring certain types of lawsuits. Third, analysts update their forecasts in response to firms earnings forecasts and recent evidence suggests that approximately 60 percent of analysts revise their forecasts within five days of management guidance (Cotter et al. 2006). On the other hand, it s difficult for the government to fight against a religious institution that has such powerful influence over the people. Furthermore, in his visit to Poland, he affirmed the Polish people s right to organize themselves, and to protest against their mistreatment. In 1979, the year before Solidarity was officially formed, Pope John Paul II visited his home country once again and gave speeches concerning civil rights in Poland. • 38. Term Limits In American Politics For many years in American politics there are constantly debates on whether or not there should be term limits imposed on politicians. Term limits have worked their way through Congress into many cities and counties across America. With much support for term limits from Americans, it shows how unsatisfied they are with politicians. But there are other ways to get politicians out of office without term limits. With peoples vote there can be someone new to take the role and do a better job than the last. Term limits would also decrease experience and would not help anyone gain more knowledge for their job. In essence, limits are not needed for United StatesSenators and Representatives. All Americans eighteen and older have a right to vote. If people do not like their current U.S. Senator or Representative that is running in an election for another term, they simply do not have to vote for him or her. • 39. Safety Culture Is The Common Beliefs And Ways Culture is the common beliefs and ways of doing things shared between those who learned their ways in the same environment. Safety culture is, however much of the same with a developed attitude towards safety. Safety culture can be strong, where people within an organization report incidents that occur or even when they had the opportunity to occur. On the other hand safety culture can also be poor where incidents are hidden or swept under the carpet and no action can be taken to decrease the possibility of it from happening again. Tools have been developed to assess the safety culture in many different organizations, usually those that have a high risk. Rules and regulations are typically implemented following incidents resulting in fatalities. Nuclear, medical and aviation are some of the main industries that have begun assessing safety culture within their organizations and implementing SMS systems to help distinguish situations that could have potentially caused an incident. Over the years safety has been taken more and more seriously and the safety culture throughout many organizations in general has been greatly improved upon. This has been mainly due to mishaps and incidents in the past that have led to fatalities. Following these incidents have been regulations and measures to ensure that the same thing is less likely to occur or possibly even impossible to occur again. Since so many regulations are now in place incidents are few and far between, which is a good ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The author, Guy de Maupassant, developed her selfish and envious character through her personality, her actions, and her dialogue. First, the author develops her character through her personality. On page three it says, The day of the ball drew near and Madame Loisel seemed sad, uneasy, anxious. Even though her husband gave her the money he was setting aside for himself to buy her a dress, she still rather wouldn t go because she didn t have any jewelry. She was anxious and depressed because of it. Madame Loisel also completely ignored her husband s suggestion of putting natural flowers in her hair and the fact that they were in style. Father Dowling felt more love for them than for any one he had known in his parish, a curious, new love that gave him a strange contentment (18). He feels a new emotion when he meets these two girls and since he feels a strange contentment, he could potentially be feeling a fleshy love, instead of a divine love. He keeps fooling himself into thinking that his love is just divine, but he is hesitating on which type of affection he is giving to the girls. The relationship between a priest and two prostitutes will not be accepted within their society and leads to many negative consequences. In addition, the loss of rationality in decision making is an effect of radical shifts in opinion. Father Dowling convinces himself that the girls need his love the most because no one loves them for who they are. He decides to continue to help them and has a different opinion on what the church believes to be correct. • 42. Negative Consequences Of Gentrification I.What is the nature of the issue/problem and how is it framed? East Los Angeles (Boyle Heights) is undergoing the process of Gentrification. Gentrification is defined as the process of renovating and improving a house or district so that it conforms to middle class taste. Some scholars define gentrification as private sector initiated residential and commercial investment in urban neighborhoods accompanied by inflows of households with higher socioeconomic status than the neighborhood s initial residents. (Vigdor, Massey and Rivlin, 2002, P. 135). One of the problems with gentrification in Boyle Heights is that the community members that are currently residing and working in Boyle Heights are not middle class and thus, the gentrification does not apply to them. The nature of the problem stems from the unintended consequences of revitalizing a district or a home and history. On the surface, the word revitalization/gentrification appears to be a good thing. However, when revitalization s sole purpose is to target a specific social economic group, it creates a wave of problems. Some of those problems or unintended consequences, include but are not limited to, displacing families that have lived in a community for decades or even centuries, driving businesses out, create tensions in communities that insight protest and/or unrest. It was just sitting along the side of it, completely exposed. It was probably a good place to catch flies since it was near the trash can, but it was left completely exposed. The side of my back porch was right by the door to go inside, Wouldn t it build a web somewhere safer? Why here? Curious, I went out to look again, staying well apart in case it tried to jump. Through the use of music, camera angles and costumes, it is clear that although the set is in 2019, some aspects of the film show aspects from the 1980 s culture. One of the similarities that I connected to Blade runner was the theme music from Mad Men has a gloomy and dark feel to just as Blade runner s opening them music giving the audience a sense of fright. The outlook of this movie is mostly postmodernist due to many characteristic that prove so. This is when technological progress in the film is seen to have failed humans as the world in the film is polluted by industries, and is overcrowded while the rich escape to the off worlds to live in peace. Also, electronic billboards give the audience an insight of what 2019 would look like. Besides that, Los Angeles in that year is filled with different cultures with all kinds of foreign people. Also the architecture proves this film is most postmodernist as most buildings are unusual to the era this movie was made in. Another reason that helps prove this is a postmodern film in terms of its style is the 4 year life span of the replicants, as it suggests a quicker life in the near future similar to today s day and age where humans wonder where the day went due to this accelerated lifestyle we are all eventually getting accustomed ... How does the development over time of the main theories in pragmatics show a greater understanding of language use? Introduction First of all, what do we understand with meaning? What is it? Meaning seems like a very straightforward concept but it is very obscure indeed. As human beings we are designed to acquire meaning from the world, it allows us make a conceptualization of the world. It is the most important feature of language, as the main purpose of language is to communicate with each other, in other words, to know what we mean . This looks quite straightforward and obvious as I have mentioned before, but what makes meaning so hard to understand is the little consciousness that we have of the knowledge and principles that govern our communicative ability that make us humans. Consequently, the Fabre family in Ma Vie en Rose is oppressed by the dominant culture in their White, middle class neighborhood in France, which dictates the norms of the neighborhood. The Father, Pierre Fabre, has moved his family directly across the street from his conservative boss whose traditionalist ideas are represented by the dominant culture of the neighborhood and he uses his power to influence the Fabre family and the community. When most Americans hear the surname Polk, they automatically think of our nation s eleventh president, James Knox Polk. A fraction of those people are able to tell you that James was born in Mecklenburg County and spent the first ten or so years of his life in present day Pineville.
