of children aged five to 13 in my hometown of New Kensington. The summer camp is organized
by a non profit to facilitate conflict resolution skills in children who are aggressive or anti social

In a group, communication is a key element that contributes to the success of the group. Without
communication between group members, the tasks will not be fulfilled. This is why
communication was an important aspect in our team.
There were several forms of communication used throughout our project. Some included

A Thin Layer Of Fiction Are Looking Backward By Edward...
Throughout the years, literature has often been used as a means to spread social critique. When
it unfavorable or even dangerous to publicly speak out against the society of the time, the written
word can act as a shield. Adding a mask of fiction to these novels allows the author to get their
message out to the public who otherwise would not take the time for such issues. Two novels that
exemplify this social critique behind a thin layer of fiction are Looking Backward by Edward
Bellamy and Herland by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Both of these novels offer a critique to certain
aspects of American society during the time period, and do so in very similar ways. Each of these
novels, Looking Backward and Herland, depict utopian societies in order to fully illustrate the
issues that the authors see in their current society. Although the issues being addressed may be
different, the way Bellamy and Gilman discuss them contain numerous parallels. Ranging from the
cause of these utopian societies, to the mindset of the individuals living in them, both novels are
very similar in their approach to social critique of America. Even the differences between the two
are caused by common reasons. These parallels show the underlying format used by both Bellamy
and Gilman that allowed them to identify the flaws in American society and offer solutions to them.

Synthetic biology has a lot to offer in fundamental research. Starting from the most well
characterised laboratory organism, E.coli, we are still in half way from full knowledge of
understanding the function of all its genes as the functions of 20% of them are still to be identified
(Keseler et al., 2011). Moreover there are many more other microorganisms with great importance
which are even less well understood.
Synthetic biology provides the ability to make specific modifications to the genome of a model
organism and to use this as a tool to study and understand the fundamental biological processes of
microorganisms, plants and animals and apply this knowledge to create novel products. One of the
major application is that these findings will expand the biological repertoire available for the
designing of new genetic pathways, proteins and cells to manipulate biological reactions that
normally occur. The current ambition is to create a database of shared standardised parts that will
be used to manipulate DNA. An example is the BioBricks Foundation which provides open access
to DNA sequences for cloning and expression of different nucleic acids and proteins. The
information that BioBricks provides, is shared through iGEM the annual international competition

In Francis Fukuyama s The End of History? published in 1989, he posits that with the end of the
Cold War, humanity is reaching a point where Western liberal democracy and economic structure is
the highest form of ideological development. Other ideologies (communism, fascism, etc.) are
vestigial forms of thinking destined to fail and disappear in an inevitable progression towards a

Walking in to University on the first day was intimidating as well as exciting. Surrounded by big
tall buildings and thousands of fellow students. The University of Edinburgh was not what I
expected. From being nervous to talk to someone new, to now being able to talk to anyone in my
year. I will reflect on my experiences from the past semester and how I thoughtabout things such as
dress code, attitudes. Challenges I faced, successes I accomplished and the future ahead.
I expected university to be people smartly dressed, have a hard working mentality and have an
enthusiastic passion to learn. There are very few people I have seen make that true. As I come in
to university I see people in casual jeans, shirts and even joggers. Even though in the article from
(Smith, 2016), shows that by coming dressed smarter for work improves results and productivity, I
am not sure why my fellow students are not keen about their learning as much as me.
In lectures, tutorials and topic seminars, I see people constantly using social media, playing games
and chatting amongst each other rather than concentrating and focusing on the lecturer and
understanding the material being taught. When it comes to passion to learn, people talk about not
going to lectures, tutorials and sometimes missing assigned online material which will benefit
them. This attitude of learning and dressing smart may just be the type of family and upbringing I
have been brought up with, but I did not expect such low levels of discipline in such a highly
respected university. This really surprised me and has changed the way I look at university.
Looking back at my first semester at the university, I think how surprisingly quickly these weeks
have gone by and we are nearly at the penultimate week of our learning before our winter exams
start. Some of the best successes were from my group presentations, becoming a programme
representative as well as my economics results.
My main challenges these past 12 weeks were to adapt to a different style of learning and having
